Renewed Calls For Action Following Tragic Accident WHY has nothing been done to lower the speed limit in Glenflesk Village? A community has been plunged into mourning following the tragic accident last Friday that saw a young woman, Denise Crowley, lose her life. There have been renewed calls to reduce the speed limit on the main N22 Cork-Killarney road following the death of the 26-year-old UCC student. Denise, from Gortdarrig, Headford, Killarney, was killed when struck by a car at Glenflesk Village when she was crossing the road on Friday evening at around 7.15pm. Emergency services including Gardaí and Killarney ambulance and fire service personnel rushed to the

scene but the young woman was pronounced dead a short time later. The only daughter of Grace and Denis (Denjoe), Denise was on her way home from college and had been due to meet her mother when the tragedy occurred. The funeral Mass took place on Tuesday in the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Shrone, with burial afterwards. Traffic-calming measures had been put in place at this point of the route in recent years but the speed limit has not been lowered, with Kerry Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae raising the matter in the Dáil this week.

THE life-changing implications of safe transport for children were highlighted by Killarney Gardaí during the week. Killarney Gardaí in conjunction with the Divisional Traffic Corps have developed an awareness and enforcement campaign. This safety campaign will form part of the Killarney Garda Schools Programme which will be delivered by Garda Deirdre Quinn, Community Policing Unit, in 2018. It was launched last Thursday in Kilcummin National School and every primary school will be visited in the Killarney area by Garda Quinn. “The initiative was developed as a re-

sult of a lack of awareness by motorists of the law surrounding this very important area that can have life-changing implications,” Sergeant Dermot O’Connell of Killarney Garda Station told Killarney Advertiser. “It came to the fore at daily checkpoints, when gardaí observed children and infants incorrectly restrained or not using a booster seat/cushion in vehicles. “Many motorists received fixed-charge notices; however, what became very apparent to gardaí over time was the serious lack of awareness of the law applicable to this area and the serious risks posed often fatal when children are incorrectly restrained in vehicles.”

Honour For KDYS THE Kerry Diocesan Youth Service had received a national accolade acknowledging its work on health promotion for young people. The KDYS was awarded the Gold Standard Health Quality Mark (HQM) at a special ceremony in Killarney this week. HQM is the recognised quality assurance mark for health promotion in youth work in Ireland, developed by the National Youth Health Programme, to enhance best practice in youth organisations.

Deputy Healy-Rae asked the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, “to ensure that the speed limit reductions which have been promised for places such as Glenflesk village and many other parts of County Kerry for the past nine years, take place sooner rather than later and before more lives are lost”. The chairman of Glenflesk GAA Club, Derry Healy, who has been one of a number of residents campaigning for the speed limit to be lowered in recent years, said locals have been devastated by the loss of life last Friday. “The community is upset and angered. Nothing is being done and we are sick of it,” he said. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to contact Killarney Garda station on 064-6671160.

Council Meeting

Councillor Storms Out Of Meeting A KILLARNEY councillor stormed out of a Kerry County Council meeting in a row over procedural matters. At Wednesday’s monthly meeting of the Killarney Municipal District, councillors were discussing the Muckross to Ross Road cycle/walkway when a disagreement occurred, culminating in Councillor Donal Grady walking out in protest. Councillor Michael Gleeson had proposed the members give their full backing to the cycle/walkway. Leas-cathaoirleach John Joe Culloty, Fianna Fáil, who was chairing the meeting at the time, seconded the motion. But Councillor Donal Grady stated he had earlier seconded Councillor Gleeson’s proposal. The Independent councillor

said Fianna Fáil councillors were trying to take over. He added leas-cathaoirleach John Joe Culloty had no right to take the chair when Cathaoirleach Niall Kelleher of Fianna Fáil had departed momentarily. The meeting’s administrator, Brenda Conway, confirmed all correct procedures were adhered to. When Cathaoirleach Niall Kelleher returned, Councillor Grady accused him of “being unfair”. Councillor Grady also claimed he will be seeking legal advice on the issue, and intends to take it further. In his absence, the other seven councillors voted unanimously in favour of the cycle path and walkway proceeding.

Killarney Roundabout Dedicated To ‘Meitheal’ THE commitment of Kerry County Council personnel and volunteers to keeping the Park Road area of Killarney looking spick and span over the years was acknowledged on Tuesday with the dedication of the Park Road roundabout to their name. Following a proposal from Cllr Michael Gleeson, it was agreed to place signage on the roundabout to recognise the effort in maintaining the area on the eastern end of the town.

Council staff, past and present, as well as representatives from Killarney Looking Good, joined the Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Niall Kelleher, for the short ceremony on the Park Road. Cllr Kelleher said the dedication of the roundabout was a small but very public statement of appreciation for the volunteers and council staff who continue to help maintain Killarney’s international reputation for tidiness and cleanliness.

National Park Liaison Committee

AT A recent meeting of Killarney National Park Liaison Committee, a leading authority on deer management and control, Dr Tim Burkitt, was the special guest. The group is hopeful suggestions put forward at the meeting will be adopted by the National Parks & Wildlife Service in future to help control the number of deer in the Park and eliminate danger to life, according to Patsy Hanley, chairperson, KNPLC. Meanwhile, following discussions about occasional discolouring that occurs in the River Deenagh, it was agreed that

members who noticed this would take samples of same and send them to Kerry County Council for analysis immediately. Thirdly, the rhododendron management plan was discussed. Ongoing work is now taking place with the National Parks & Wildlife Service, the Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal and other voluntary bodies. Fishing groups represented on the committee warned that fishing groups outside of Ireland are pushing that course fishing should be available on our lakes and rivers, adding that this would be disastrous to our trout fishing.

Town Talk

Proposals For Aras Site THE Áras Phádraig was once a hive of local activity serving the people of Killarney. The current feasibility study and business plan concludes that a multi-purpose facility be considered.

The core components would include:

• • • • • •

300-seat community theatre and arts space and café to create a vibrant creative hub meeting rooms capable of supporting a variety of community uses educational space office suite identification of two anchor tenants to provide a secure annual income to support the facility

Could Killarney Civic Plaza Boost Our Town? Words: Eve Kelliher Artist’s Impression: Damien Switzer/KC Print OUR series on innovative parking solutions has certainly sparked debate across Killarney and now we bring you an idea for another potential addition to our townscape. Last week we revealed how a multi-storey car park at the Glebe car park could be worth millions to the town in terms of parking fees, accommodation and employment in associated retail areas there – and in its construction. Of course, it would also alleviate traffic congestion by ensuring ample parking

in the town centre. It’s really got the creative juices flowing and as soon as our edition went live online on Friday, a reader eagerly contacted us with his idea for a combined car park/civic plaza amenity for the Aras Phádraig site and Lewis Road car park. So, we created the artist’s impression, above, to show how such a development could look. The suggestion was to knock the Aras Phádraig building and develop a multi-storey car park and civic amenity to

occupy the site of the Aras Phádraig and the existing Lewis Road car and coach park. Parts of our idea for the Glebe car park would tie in with visions for this site, such as housing and office space – but without the retail space we had allowed for in the Glebe proposal. A theatre, café and cinema could also feature – pretty much in keeping with the results of the existing feasibility study for the former Aras Phádraig; see left. What do you think?

News Briefs ... Surprise Reminder Of Home On Kenya’s Ngong Hills Councillor Seeking Meeting Travel

AS SHE enjoyed a trek on Kenya’s Ngong Hills during the week, Triona Sheehy was faced with a gigantic reminder of her home parish. Dominating the skyline over the hills was a crane from Fossa-based Liebherr Container Cranes. “I was very proud to see that Fossa was so well represented!” said Triona who is looking forward to travelling home for Christmas next week. The primary school teacher has been working in Kenya where she has volunteered many times over the years as part of the Kenya Education Project. The Ngong Hills featured in the 1985 movie Out of Africa and are often used by Olympic athletes as a training ground.

About A Deer Cull

A KERRY councillor is calling for a meeting with the National Parks & Wildlife Service about a deer cull. Fianna Fáil’s Cllr John Joe Culloty was speaking after a County Clare judge said the State agency responsible for wildlife isn’t doing enough to kill sufficient numbers of deer. Cllr Culloty says the deer population, especially in Kerry, has grown too large, adding something needs to be done.

Minister Jim Daly opens Deer Lodge.

THE Minister for Mental Health and Older People Jim Daly cut the tape to perform the official opening of Deer Lodge in Killarney on Monday. Deer Lodge is a €13 million mental health recovery unit and its development and opening marks a huge step forward in the care provided for those using mental health services in Kerry. Residents moved from the outdated O’Connor unit earlier this year to the modern, comfortable facility. Minister Daly said Deer Lodge was “a credit to the HSE in the Kerry area, the staff, the residents and the local community” and hailed it as a model for a

person–centred and recovery based service.” Head of Mental Health Services with Cork Kerry Community Healthcare Sinead Glennon said the opening is “huge step forward” in the care provided. This new facility has already transformed the lives of the many residents who will use the 40-bed facility in the years ahead, she added. The mental health recovery unit for adults and older people is in four “households”, all connected through a central module

that features a communal area, therapy areas, entrance, foyer, prayer room and other facilities. Each household has access to an internal landscaped garden area, and each resident has their own bedroom with en-suite facilities. Award

Surprise Celebration For Noreen

HER years of dedication to the Killarney-London Association were rewarded last month when Noreen Looney-Titmarsh was presented with the association’s Person of the Year award at the annual reunion celebration in the Claddagh Ring in Hendon, London. And there were celebrations closer to home when Noreen’s family and friends threw a surprise party for her in the Killar-

ney Avenue Hotel. Noreen, who trained as a nurse in St Finan’s Hospital, was delighted to be greeted by former colleagues as well as by her family including her mother Peggy Looney, 96, brother Tom Looney and his wife Anne, brother Pat and his wife Breda, sister Mary O’Neill and her husband Seamus O’Neill, nieces and nephews. Her brother Kevin Looney sent good wishes from Boston, while her husband John and

their daughters Ruth and Cara, London, and their son Greg, in China, were also delighted for Noreen. Previous recipients present were Sheila Dickson and Noreen’s cousin Canon Tom Looney, while chairman of the committee Cllr Donal Grady and mayor of Killarney Municipal District Niall Kelleher were also present. Ena Moloney and Mary Murphy were also key to ensuring the surprise party went well.

THE hard-working members of Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal were joined by none other than Santa Claus himself as they chopped up four truckloads worth of fallen timber for a good cause. The timber, from trees knocked during the recent storms, is for sale in Killarney Men’s Shed in aid of local charities over the Christmas period. “This is the final outing in this campaign done in cooperation with Pat Dawson, regional manager of the National Parks & Wildlife Service, and the Killarney Mountain Meitheal,” said Johnny McGuire of the group. “We would like to thank the truck owners involved, Paul Fitzgerald, Ted McCarthy, Con Duggan, Batty O’Sullivan and Mike O’Callaghan. In excess of €3,000 was raised through this voluntary effort for needy causes over the Christmas period.”

Green Light

For Killarney Cycle/Walkway A CYCLE/WALKWAY proposed for Killarney has received the green light. The 3m wide cycle route will connect the N71 Muckross Road in the townland of Woodlawn to the L3905 Ross Road in the townlands of Scrahane, Demesne and Bunrower. The plan went to public consultation earlier this year, and received 11 submissions and observations. At the monthly meeting of Killarney Municipal District on Wednesday, members viewed the submissions, which outlined a number of concerns from State bodies, residents’ groups and private individuals. Issues raised include potential flooding and the impact on the local environment, decreased levels of security and safety, lighting, fencing and car parking. A motion to continue with the cycle/ walkway was unanimously passed by all present members. Kerry County Council noted all submissions, and they will now seek funding for the project from various sources.

Do We Need A Rival Award For Homegrown Heroes? OUR readers’ opinion has been divided on the awarding of the Order of Innisfallen to former Taoiseach Enda Kenny and it has caused a ripple of discontent. The Cairde Chill Arne Order of Innisfallen awards scheme is a joint initiative between Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and Kerry County Council. It was established in 2005 to recognise outstanding contributions of people to the economic development of the town and its tourism industry. But there seems to be a feeling this week that the general public has not been represented. As one disgruntled reader said: “Do we have anybody worthy of this in the county of Kerry, you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours!” Granted, last year’s recipient, A-list actor Michael Fassbender, is renowned for name-checking his hometown and the parish of Fossa throughout the world. Other previous recipients include entertainer Daniel O’Donnell, industrialist Isolde Liebherr, tour operators Brian Stack, Linda Roberts and Brian McColgan, travel writer Susan Poole, tourism official Margaret Cahill and former ministers John O’Donoghue and Jimmy Deenihan. But this week the consensus from our readers so far is that the award should steer clear of politics. Prior to the Oder of Innisfallen, the Knights of Innisfallen was set up as a sepa-

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

rate tradition to acknowledge local people who contribute to Killarney. On the night it was set up a group of locals in the back of Courtney’s pub decided that this award wasn’t in the spirit of Killarney – being far too lofty – and vowed to set up a rival award, the Serfs of O’Donoghue’s Rock – an award/honour for a local by the locals. Is there scope for an award representing locals and those who contribute to Killarney on a daily basis, such as people involved in tourism, sport and other ventures? Why not consider the likes of broadcaster Weeshie Fogarty, pictured, or Micheal Leane, historian and longest-serving member of the Knights of Malta, or those like Con O’Leary of The Laurels who has been meeting and greeting tourists for decades, leading ladies of our local hotel industry or Theresa Irwin, National President of Soroptimists Ireland this year, pictured, or Eileen Switzer? Eileen has a lifetime’s involvement in sporting organisations. While she has received the national Women in Sport award, she has never been acknowledged locally. Posthumous awards could be given to honour people like hotelier Maurice O’Donoghue, or our very own Danny Casey, who founded Killarney Advertiser. The list is endless.

Enda Kenny Honoured In Killarney

ENDA KENNY inherited an “economic basket case” when he became Taoiseach but he reset the default button from one of negativity to one of positivity, a gathering in Killarney was told. The former Fine Gael leader was inducted into the Order of Innisfallen – the highest honour the town can bestow – in recognition of his years of service to the country, particularly in terms of tourism development and promotion. In a citation delivered in Killarney House and Gardens – refurbished and reopened at a cost of €10m during Mr Kenny’s term in office – MC and hotelier Michael Rosney said that from a Killarney perspective, the single most important and creative initiative Mr Kenny oversaw was the reduction in the tourism VAT rate to 9%. “We in Killarney’s tourism sector will always be grateful to Enda Kenny for the work he has done on our behalf and for the great things he has helped to bring about,” Mr Rosney added. Recalling the former Taoiseach’s two-star performance on the RTÉ reality TV programme The Restaurant, the MC quipped: “The Killarney tourism industry gives thanks that his career path took him into a government cabinet rather than into a busy kitchen.” The cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Niall Kelleher paid tribute to the former taoiseach and Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce President Paul O’Neill said: “Enda Kenny was and is a forward-thinking, innovative, dedicated politician who has always put the country and its people first.”

Gatsby Ball Whisks Hoteliers Back In Time

Pics: Don MacMonagle THEY dressed to dazzle as Killarney’s hoteliers channelled their inner Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby last Friday. The Malton Hotel hosted the Great Gatsby Gala for the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation and it proved to be a real highlight of Killarney’s social calendar. The theme of the blacktie gala was especially fitting as the hotel, which is shortly due to be renamed the Great Southern Killarney, was a magnet for socialites and dignitaries in the period leading up to the 1920s. However the property never hosted

the celebrated parties in the heyday of the Roaring 20s, as the iconic hotel was closed down and used as military barracks during that time. But last Friday, the team at The Malton rewound the clock and threw a 1920s bash to rewrite the history books. Guests arrived to all the fanfare of an arrival party featuring The Lounge Man, before indulging in a spectacular fourcourse 1920s banquet. Post-dinner, guests enjoyed a turn at the tables at The Prohibition Casino and live jazz performances continued into the early hours in Great Room Cocktail Lounge.

better treatment pathway. Visage Clinic was formed with a principal goal in mind, to provide safe, effective and trusted aesthetic treatments with a foundation of continuity and patient empowerment. “At Visage Clinic our patient pathway is tried and tested, our free consultation service provides a detailed breakdown of the treatments we gives, the results a patient can expect and most importantly we provide the knowledge and information to allow choice,” said Anna Malcolm, clinical co-ordinator. The team has enjoyed a warm welcome from the business community in Killarney and paid tribute to all who helped them ensure the clinic is a welcoming haven for customers. “We would like to pay tribute to John Galvin Builders. John provided us with a quality service and we are absolutely delighted with how he helped us realise our dream clinic,” added Anna. Sika Signs also enhanced the bright space with appealing signage while neighbours Abbey Travel have welcomed the team. “There is a such a wonderful sense of community in Killarney, we have been overwhelmed by the welcome,” added Anna.

Guess Who’s Back?

A VISIT to see Santa Claus is always ultra-magical and a host of bedazzled youngsters – and the young at heart – descended on Killarney Outlet Centre at the weekend. You see, the man in red has taken up residence on the ground floor of the cen-

tre, in his log cabin, where he will meet and greet his pals in December. You can pay a call on December 9 and 10 and December 16 and 17 from 1pm to 6pm each day. Every family will receive their own souvenir photograph of their visit and all children will take home a special

Christmas parcel from Santa. “There is an extra special atmosphere in Killarney at this time of year due to the Christmas in Killarney festival, one of the premium Christmas festivals in the country,” said Killarney Outlet Centre general manager Paul Sherry.

Alleged Incidents Of Professional Begging THE public has been urged to be vigilant in the wake of alleged incidents of professional begging in the run-up to Christmas. Following reports of a number of young men allegedly seeking money in a non-confrontational manner in Tralee last weekend, Cllr Donal Grady said a hard line had been taken against any such practice in Killarney in the past and warned vigilance if money was being sought instead of food.

Call For Action On Headstone Sizes A KERRY COUNTY COUNCILLOR has called for action on headstone sizes. Councillor Brendan Cronin says headstones and monuments in cemeteries around the county are in breach of Kerry County Council regulations. According to bye-laws, the maximum allowable size for a headstone is 1.5-metres high and 1-metre wide, and written permission for each headstone has to be sought, prior to installation. Speaking on Radio Kerry, the councillor claims 99% of people adhere to the rules governing the dimensions of headstones, however, some structures are grotesquely large and overshadow neighbouring graves.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

How Killarney Man Saved Life Of Former Taoiseach News

Words: Eve Kelliher

FORMER Taoiseach Enda Kenny has revealed how a Killarney man’s heroism saved his life after he almost choked to death on a piece of steak. Mr Kenny was staying in Killarney, where he has a holiday home, and was dining out following a day spent climbing Carrantuohill. He was eating a steak in The Laurels restaurant when he began to choke and needed to be given the Heimlich Manoeuvre. The former Fine Gael leader told The Irish Star that restaurant owner Con O’Leary’s quick thinking saved his life. He said: “People thought I was playacting, standing up turning blue, and by coincidence, Con was going from one end of the premises to the other and said: ‘don’t worry I have him’. He did the Heimlich manoeuvre on me, which meant that I lived to tell the tale.” Mr O’Leary, 79, said: “We had been talking away for two or three minutes and I walked away from him but then everything went silent and I looked around and the two of them were standing up. I knew straight away he was choking and in distress so I gave him the Heimlich manoeuvre and out popped a bit of steak. I was just lucky I got it up.” He revealed that he had learned the lifesaving technique after he had a similar experience. Con O’Leary, The Laurels Pub & Restaurant, Killarney. Pic: Don MacMonagle

White House Blames Dry Throat For Trump’s Unusual Speech THE White House blamed President Trump’s unusual speech on Wednesday in which he appeared to slur his words on a dry throat. White House spokesman Raj Shah told the Los Angeles Times: “His throat was dry. There’s nothing to it.” He was pressed on if the garbled words could be because of health concerns. “I know what you’re getting at. I’m saying there’s nothing to it,” Shah said. During his speech on Wednesday on Jerusalem, Trump appeared to stumble over the phrase “God bless the United States.” Trump in the address recognized Jerusalem as Isra-

el’s capital and announced plans to relocate the US Embassy there. “I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” Trump said during a speech in the Diplomatic Reception Room of the White House. He said he would try to resolve one of history’s oldest conflicts his way, arguing that past approaches, such as delaying the recognition, have not worked. Last month, Trump abruptly stopped a speech he was giving recapping his Asia trip to take a sip of water. Just more than 10 minutes into the speech at the White House, he paused and looked under lectern for water, before turning to the side, picking up a bottle of water with both hands and taking a sip.

Search Is Over & Teddy Returned To Owner

A TEDDY BEAR belonging to a fouryear-old Kilkenny girl has been found after an appeal by the Society of St Vincent De Paul. The girl accidentally donated her favourite bear to the charity last Friday. The St Vincent De Paul says they received a huge response after making an appeal for his return on social media. A spokesperson for the shop yesterday confirmed Teddy has been located safe and well and has been reunited with his rightful owner.

Woman Is Third Homeless Person To Die In A Week

A WOMAN was the latest homeless person to die on Ireland’s streets this week. The victim, aged in her 40s, was found on Oliver Plunkett Street Lower in Cork city early on Wednesday morning. It is the third death of a rough sleeper within the last week: two men have also died in Dublin. It is understood she was found near an emergency shelter run by Cork Simon Community and had been using homeless services for several years. Her body was found, ironically, at the

same time Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy launched two Focus Ireland reports, ‘Keeping a Home’ and ‘Finding a Home’. Minister Murphy told the Dáil it is a “very difficult phone call to take” when he is informed of the death of a rough sleeper. He said that was why he had made a commitment to ensure there will be a bed in place for people who are sleeping rough. The Minister expressed “my sympathy and condolences to the family of the lady who died in Cork”.

Tens Of Thousands Evacuated Following California Wildfires HOT, dry Santa Ana winds fanned several wildfires in southern California, where hundreds of houses have burned and tens of thousands have fled their homes around Los Angeles. The winds, which blow westward from the California desert, were forecast to reach 130kp/h. That could stoke several blazes burning in the Los Angeles area that have already caused, according to local media, about 200,000 people to evacuate. “Strong winds overnight creating extreme fire danger,” said an alert sent by the countrywide emergency system in Los Angeles.

Video and photographs on social media showed flame-covered hillsides along busy roadways as commuters slowly made their way to work or home, rows of houses reduced to ash and firefighters spraying water on walls of fire as they tried to save houses. The Skirball Fire, which erupted early on Wednesday had burned about 500 acres near large estates in the Bel-Air neighbourhood of Los Angeles, was only 5% contained. The largest blaze, the Thomas Fire, burned more than 90,000 acres after it destroyed more than 150 homes and threatened thousands more in Ventura, about 80km northwest on Los Angeles.

The Irish Times To Acquire Landmark Media Business

Force Is With Kerry Opinion

Words: Eve Kelliher Pic: Valerie O’Sullivan

SKELLIG MICHAEL has long left an indelible impression. More than 100 years ago, that giant of Irish literature, George Bernard Shaw, described this pyramidal sandstone island as an “incredible, impossible, mad place” that is “part of our dream world”. Its importance was recognised in 1996 when it was awarded Unesco World Heritage designation. It was, adjudicators deemed, of “exceptional universal value”. But for many, this magical place remained barely known. That changed at the end of 2015 when Skellig Michael featured prominently in one of the year’s biggest movies,

Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And, from December 15, it will likely play an even greater role in the new Star Wars film, The Last Jedi. Disney Lucasfilm - the production company behind the globally popular franchise - had been looking for somewhere otherworldly and they found it at Skellig Michael. The movie’s location manager Martin Joy captured its spectacular beauty when he noted: “We needed to find somewhere completely from another time and place. We were just blow away by it. It’s an extraordinary place. It certainly fed into our Star Wars universe.”

Two Men Were ‘Planning To Blow Up Downing Street Gates And Kill Theresa May’

THE Irish Times DAC and the owners of Landmark Media Investments have signed a share purchase agreement whereby The Irish Times will acquire all of the publishing and media interests of the Landmark Media group. The transaction is subject to a number of conditions including receipt of regulatory approvals from The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and The Environment as well as The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. It is expected that these approvals could take at least four months to procure. The em-

ployees of Landmark Media were apprised of the sale of the media group by management at meetings on Wednesday afternoon. LMI Group CEO, Tom Murphy, who will exit the business at legal completion of the transaction, said: “I would like to place on record my appreciation and the appreciation of the board of Landmark Media to all staff members for their support, understanding and particularly for their patience. We acknowledge that throughout this delicate and sometimes public process that it has been a difficult period for all staff members, reading and listening to commentary, much of it uninformed and speculative.”

A TERROR plot to assassinate Theresa May at Downing Street was foiled on Wednesday. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of plotting to kill the UK Prime Minister by using a bomb disguised as a bag to blow off the gates of Downing Street and then attack her with knives.

The suspects were detained during raids in London and Birmingham last week and charged with terrorism offences. The Metropolitan Police said Naa’imur Zakariyah Rahman, 20, from north London, and Mohammed Aqib Imran, 21, from Birmingham, had been charged with preparing a terrorist act.

‘No White Smoke’ On Brexit Deal

THE European Commission said there was still “no white smoke” on a Brexit deal but it was ready to meet British Prime Minister Theresa May any time this week for further talks. Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas told reporters in Brussels: “So far no white smoke. We stand ready to receive prime minister May at any moment in time when

they are ready,” A spokesman for Mrs May said Britain is close to an agreement with the European Union to unlock Brexit talks but she knows there is more work to be done on a deal for the border between Ireland and the UK.

Farm Workers On Our Doorstep?

Walt Disney is pictured left at Ladies View. The picture on the right was taken by Walt Disney of his daughter Sharon and screenwriter/producer Bill Walsh outside Clancy’s shop in New Street. Letters

Alzheimer Centre Is Needed AT A Killarney Municipal Area meeting in early 2017, I called for the provision of a centre for Alzheimer care in Killarney. The council members unanimously supported the proposal and it was forwarded to the Health Service Executive. In reply the HSE stated that it was undertaking a review

of facilities in the Cork/Kerry region and that its interim report would be available in the third quarter of this year. On November 4, the HSE informed that the report is not completed and that the review is on-going. This reply is most disappointing for local families who are caring for relatives

with Alzheimer’s, as they had hoped for a positive response to the request for a dedicated centre. I once again call on the HSE to quickly complete its review of facilities and to look favourably on the original request/proposal. Michael Gleeson (Councillor), Clasheen, Killarney

ON NOVEMBER 9, the President of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA), Joe Healy, lobbied the former Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Frances Fitzgerald, calling on her to relax the criteria for work permits for farm workers from outside the Economic Area. It is foreseen by the IFA, that a shortage of skilled and general labour supply will restrict the sector from reaching its growth targets for the next ten years. These workers are badly needed in the dairy, pig and agricultural sectors to enable the industry to meet the goals set down in the Foodwise 2025 Plan. As the local area representative for the Social Democrats in the Killarney and surrounding area, I would like to voice my support for the IFA on this issue. Quiet simply, if an adequate number of farm workers cannot be sourced in Ireland, or within the EU, then naturally the Irish Farmers Association will have to look elsewhere. It may be opportune to point out that we have a significant number of potential farm workers from outside the Economic

Area already living in the country and willing to work. This untapped workforce currently abide in Direct Provision Centres dotted around the country, and find themselves in the process of being granted asylum. The Minister for Justice, Charlie Flanagan, has recently stated that asylum seekers will be granted their long overdue right to work (see Irish Times 3rd Nov ‘17). I am calling on the Minister to ensure that asylum seekers, who have been living in the country for six months or more and have not received a final decision on their case or have a case under appeal, must not be restricted from seeking employment as farm workers. In the interim, training should be provided to asylum seekers for these positions, through Intreo or through Local Employment Services. The link between work and human dignity does not require qualification here. Those who have spent many years living under the Direct Provision system are long overdue their right to work which is a fundamental aspiration in us all. John O’Shea, Killarney

Read

The Bookworm

The second season of the drama about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II returns to Netflix today with 10 episodes available to binge watch immediately! Those who enjoyed Season 1 will continue to be impressed by this amazing looking period piece. Acting remains a top attribute, especially Matt Smith (Prince Philip) and Claire Foy (Queen Elizabeth) who are even more front-and-centre this year than last. Peter Morgan’s second season fittingly opens on a bleak, rainy day in February, 1957. Queen Elizabeth and the newly crowned Prince Philip are at a crossroads. Sitting in the shadows, reluctant to face each other, the married couple’s allegiance to one another is being questioned in the public, and the two must decide how to move forward. Before an answer is given, the series shifts back in time five months to examine how the royal pair ended up in such a state.

Reviewed: Jackie’s Girl by Kathy McKeon THIS coming-of-age memoir by a young woman who spent 13 years as Jackie Kennedy’s personal assistant and occasional nanny includes the lessons about life and love she learned from the glamorous first lady. In 1964, Kathy McKeon was just 19 years old and newly arrived from Ireland when she was hired as the personal assistant to former first lady Jackie Kennedy. The next thirteen years of her life were spent in Jackie’s

service, during which Kathy not only played a crucial role in raising young Caroline and John Jr., but also had a front-row seat to some of the 20th century’s most significant events. Because Kathy was always at Jackie’s side, Rose Kennedy deemed her “Jackie’s girl.” And although Kathy called Jackie “Madam,” she considered her employer more like a big sister who, in many ways, mentored her on how to be a lady.

Wedding of the Week

Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: Padraig Healy Wedding Photography

08.12.17

Winter Wedding For Danielle And Kieran LOCAL couple Danielle Favier and Kieran O’Halloran tied the knot in a winter wedding recently. Glenflesk native Danielle and Kieran, Killarney, were wed on November 17 in St Agatha’s Church in Glenflesk and celebrated at a reception in The Malton Hotel. Danielle works with Fáilte Ireland in PR and marketing while Kieran is the Killarney town engineer with Kerry County Council. The couple, who have been friends for 15 years, got engaged in October 2016 while on a break in Doonbeg, Co Clare, on the Wild Atlantic Way. The bride looked picture-perfect in a Sapphire dress with a beaded top and veil by Aisling Designs, Cork. “Over 350 guests joined us at the reception in The Malton Hotel,” said Danielle. Padraig Healy captured the big day on camera, with hairstyling was by Sean Taaffe and makeup by Annette O’Brien.

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,

Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING KNOW YOUR RIGHTS We are obviously entering a very busy period for retailers as Christmas shopping is now in full swing. As consumers it is important that we are aware of our rights. This area is governed under the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act, 1980. This Act sets out that all items purchased from a retailer must be of merchantable quality, fit for its normal purpose and reasonably durable, be as described whether the description is part of the advertising or wrapping or as described on a label or verbally as said by a sales person. When goods are purchased from a retailer, a contract is made with them. The retailer agrees to provide certain goods at a certain price. If the purchase turns out to be faulty, the retailer and not the manufacturer is responsible to the customer. In situations where the item is faulty or not fit for purpose, then the consumer is entitled to a refund or replacement or a repair. A consumer does not have to take a credit note in these circumstances. Even in situations where a retailer has exhibited shop notices such as “no refunds” or “no exchanges”, such notices cannot exempt the retailer from their statutory obligations under the Sale of Goods Act. If however the consumer has simply changed their mind regarding the purchase, then the Sale of Goods

and Supply of Services Act does not apply. In practice, many retailers will, as a matter of good will, issue a credit note or otherwise deal favourably with the customer but there is no statutory obligation on them to do so. As a Contract has been formed between the purchaser and the retailer, it is the purchaser who holds the rights under the Act. Therefore if goods are received as a gift, the recipient does not hold a Contract with the retailer and does not hold the same rights. However, again most retailers will as a gesture of good will deal favourably with the customer. Consumers rights under the Act also apply to goods purchased at sale prices. They must be of merchantable quality and fit for their particular purpose and as described. If goods however are sold as seconds or shop soiled then the purchaser is put on notice of the condition. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Casey & Company do not accept any responsibility for any errors or omissions herein.

OMG You Guys!! Legally Blonde The Musical Is Coming To Killarney!

EASTENDERS’ Rita Simons and Bill Ward, star of Coronation Street and Emmerdale, feature in a major new UK and Ireland tour of the smash-hit Broadway and West End musical Legally Blonde The Musical. Legally Blonde The Musical also has two dogs in the cast, a Chihuahua called Bruiser and another called Rufus, a big, brutish pooch that only its mother could love! Bruiser is already cast and will be on the road but producers have decided to hold auditions for ‘Rufus’ in every town

and city on the tour – more details to follow. College sweetheart and homecoming queen Elle Woods doesn’t take no for an answer. When her boyfriend dumps her for someone more serious, Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books and heads for Harvard Law School. Based on the Reese Witherspoon film, Legally Blonde The Musical earned seven Tony nominations and 10 Drama Desk Award nominations during its Broadway run. Tickets, from €39.05, are available from www.inec.ie or www.ticketmaster.ie

Café Culture At Its Best

Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on the ultimate facial for a non-surgical facelift including microdermabrasion

CACI Non-Surgical Facelift

STEP ONE: MICROCURRENT Originally developed for treating facial palsy, microcurrent therapy is now widely used as an aesthetic anti-ageing treatment. True microcurrent uses a current with an intensity of less than one millionth of an amp (<1mA) that works in harmony with the body’s own bioelectrical field. A higher intensity current will cause contractions of the facial muscles which can actually worsen lines and wrinkles, whereas microcurrent stimulation does not contract muscles, but instead works by a process called muscle re-education to achieve results. Electro buds: CACI systems utilise specially developed serum filled cotton buds to enhance treatment results. The serum contains Hexapeptides and powerful anti-ageing ingredients to provide an instant face firming effect. STEP TWO: WRINKLE COMB The Wrinkle Comb combines LED photo stimulation with high frequency electrical stimulation. Specific wavelengths of light combined with high frequency stimulation activate the body’s sodium potassium pump. This encourages cell exchange, the release of sodium ions, collagen proteins and hyaluronic glycosaminoglycan which together act to plump out deep lines and wrinkles and trigger tissue repair and healing. The Wrinkle Comb provides the first non-invasive needle free alternative to collagen injections and other dermal fillers. There are three more steps which will feature next week’s column. • For bookings or more information call 064-6632966

Our brunch menu features fresh brioche and waffles, all made in-house. We have a weekly brunch special, and our most

Our list includes six festive creations and six classic cocktails for you to choose from, served daily until late.” Café Du Parc’s December opening hours are 8.30am- ate everyday; call 0646621100 or email info@killarneyplaza. com.

Gifts Are Not Always Shown On A Stage AS YOU read my column this week I will be only hours away from marrying the wonderful John O’Sullivan. I write so often about inspiration and the people who inspire me. This week one of the most inspiring people in my life decided that her time on this earth had come to an end and now there’s one more angel in heaven. My Nana Foley was an incredible woman. She believed so much in those she loved and wasn’t without telling us all how great we are! Nana was my first audience. She sat through everything from Westlife to my many many impersonations. What stands out for me when I think of Nana was the time she gave me. She was never too busy to sit down and be entertained or to talk with me about life and all its ups

THERE’S a point where public and private transport will merge in the future – and Swiss design house Rinspeed is bringing a taste of that to the present. The studio renowned for wild and weird ideas plans to attend the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas with the latest fruits of its imagination, the Snap. Electrically powered and boasting level-five autonomy, the Snap is highly modular for sustainable ‘motoring’ in the future. Hardware and software elements are easily replaced/recycled, along with the “skateboard” chassis, which is subject to high levels of wear and tear. But the passenger-carrying safety cell (the “pod”) can be transferred to a new skateboard, reducing

the cost of keeping the Snap on the road over years or even decades of service life. It’s an idea that turns the whole mass-market automotive business model on its head. Rinspeed founder, Frank Rinderknecht, expects the vehicle’s operating systems to wear out or be superseded by newer systems long before the pod needs to be replaced. This will have an inevitable effect on the environmentally responsible disposal and/or recycling of parts for the Snap. Rinderknecht has also developed the Snap to be something more than just transport, for that matter. The pod can be interchangeable with other top hats serving multiple purposes – camping, for example, or goods carrying.

MASERATI will return to Formula 1 next year, taking over naming rights for the Haas team as early as next week. Sergio Marchionne, CEO of both Ferrari and Maserati’s parent company, will send the Modena brand back to the Formula 1 fray for the first time in nearly 60 years. Effectively, the deal pays Haas’s Ferrari V6 powertrain costs. Like Alfa Romeo’s sponsorship of perennial back marker Sauber, it effectively sees Maserati paying Ferrari €20 million a season, via Haas. The Maserati-Haas outfit will be the fourth “Italian” team on the 2018 Formula 1 grid, though only Toro Rosso and Ferrari will actually be based in the country.

Punta Del Este Replaces Sao Paulo Race On Formula E Schedule

FORMULA E has replaced its postponed Sao Paulo round with a race at Punta del Este in Uruguay, the FIA has confirmed. Sao Paulo city authorities requested its 2017/18 season race be pushed back to the following campaign because the process of privately selling the area where the race was due to take place has taken longer

than expected. Formula E has responded rapidly and its alternative, a return to the Uruguayan city Punta del Este, was approved by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council on Wednesday. The race will take place on Sao Paulo’s original date of March 17, and keeps the 2017/18 schedule at 14 races across 11 events.

COMHAIRLE CONTAE CHIARRAÍ KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL AN tACHT UM PLEANÁIL AGUS FORBAIRT 2000-2017 & NA RIALACHÁIN UM PLEANÁIL AGUS FORBAIRT 2001-2017 PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT ACT 2000-2017 & PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT REGULATIONS 2001-2017 PHOIBLÍ FÓGRA PUBLIC NOTICE REFURBISHMENT WORKS TO CULTURAL CENTRE, KILLARNEY EAST AVENUE ROAD, KILLARNEY, CO. KERRY

Public Notice in Compliance with Part XI of the Planning & Development Act 2000-2017 as set down in Part 8 of the Planning and Development Regulations, 2001-2017 Pursuant to the requirements of the above, Notice is hereby given that Kerry County Council proposes to carry out the development, particulars of which are set out hereunder:-

(i) Location/Townland or Postal Address of the Proposed Development Location: EAST AVENUE ROAD, KILLARNEY, CO. KERRY Townland(s): - KILLARNEY AND AVENUE

(ii) Nature and extent of the Proposed Works The refurbishment of the Cultural Centre as an Arts Centre is a project that considers not just the building space but the complete area surrounding it, as a space available for a wide variety of Arts related activities. The aim is to make the New Arts Centre a flexible and adaptable space both internally and in particular outside. We propose to re-design the front façade, with a metal structure with black mirror cladding which reflects the trees at the back of the auditorium area. The proposed Arts Centre includes a new corridor extension at the rear of the building to allow access to the toilets and changing area along with providing a rehearsal / meeting room, new side stage and accessible WC. Other works to the building will include alterations to the existing internal layout and re-roofing the building. The outdoor area covered with a retractable canopy will be a flexible area that will seat an audience which can view a show on the internal stage or an external stage. The stage, lighting and sound systems will be adaptable to whatever format is required by the performance. It will also be an option to provide audience standing space in this area. The paved area proposed will be a concrete surface with a number of landscaped areas. We propose to use water repellent spray and stencils to inscribe quotations from poets who have visited Killarney or who are currently associated with the area. The paving is designed to show these inscriptions on wet days. The whole area will be covered by a nest of steel segments coloured in different shades of green to create the impression of walking under a tunnel of trees in the Killarney National Park. Beneath the metal bars will be inserted a series of led lights, which will be used to light up the full area in the evening time. This structure will be able to facilitate a series of suspended art exhibitions which can be attached to the metal bars. The poles that support this structure are a schematic interpretation of trees. They will also be used to support public lighting for the adjacent pedestrian footpath. The design concept of this proposal is to create a flexible and contemporary space which can host an arts centre and also re-create a modern interpretation of the Killarney National Park in the Town Centre. Best practice Environmental Management Measures shall be adhered to throughout the proposed development. Plans and Particulars of the proposed development are available for inspection or purchase, on payment of a specified fee not exceeding the reasonable cost of making such a copy, during normal office hours at the following locations from Friday 8th December 2017 until Friday 12th January 2018: - ♦ Kerry County Council, Killarney Municipal District, Town Hall, Killarney, Co. Kerry. ♦ Kerry County Council, Aras an Chontae, Rathass, Tralee, County Kerry. ♦ Kerry County Council Website www.kerrycoco.ie An advisor will be available to discuss the plans and particulars by appointment only, if required – contact 066 7183929. Submissions and Observations with respect to the proposed development DEALING WITH PROPER PLANNING AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT in which the development would be situated, may be made IN WRITING AND TITLED ‘REFURBISHMENT WORKS TO CULTURAL CENTRE, KILLARNEY’: To: John Purcell, Facilities Management Unit, Kerry County Council, Aras an Chontae, Rathass, Tralee, Co. Kerry. And must be received on or before: 5.00 p.m. on Friday, 26th January 2018.

The sight is so spectacular! Please wipe away that tear, For I am spending Christmas With Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs That people hold so dear, But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas Choir up here. I have no words to tell you The joy their voices bring, For it is beyond description To hear the angels sing.

So be happy for me dear ones. You know I hold you dear. And be glad I’m spending Christmas With Jesus Christ this year. I send you each a special gift From my heavenly home above. I send you each a memory Of my undying love After all “Love” is the gift, More precious than pure gold, It was always more important In the stories Jesus told. Please love and keep each other, As my Father said to do, For I can’t count the blessings Or love he has for you. So have a Merry Christmas Wipe away that tear. In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

Words: Debby Looney

Joy To The World At St Mary’s Cathedral

Garden Magic A Gardener’s Wish List Is Endless! AS THE Christmas countdown has begun, you’ll be glad to know it is always easy to find a gift for your favourite gardener! Stainless steel gardening tools are always welcome. Durable, strong and usually of a high quality, stainless steel is certainly the way to go. Kent and Stowe have a lovely lightweight range which is well worth looking out for. Another new type of garden tool has fibreglass handles, again lightweight, and will not rot if left outside! Kneeling pads are also a great gift, and there are neoprene ones available which are in fun colours (always important) but which are water proof and very comfortable. In that same vein, a good pair of gloves never goes astray either, though they can be hard to find. Keep in mind what your gardener uses them for, there is no point buying pretty cotton gloves if they are to be used for roses! I have a fantastic pair of Laura Ashley gloves which combine practicality, pretty flowery material and exceptional fit. TK Maxx is a great place to find this type of gift. Another item a gardener might be slow to guy himself would be a heated propagator. These are very useful to get seeds started off earlier than would otherwise be possible. They come in various sizes, and can be used in the green house or a bright shed. Solar lights are also a practical gift, as are birdhouses or bird feeders. If your gardener is young, they are especially nice gifts, as are insect hotels – who under the age of ten is not fascinated by insects? Often these insect hotels come with an explanation of the benefits of insects, which are many. Books, diaries and calendars are also handy gifts. The Royal Horticultural Society has some excellent books for gardeners, ‘Latin for Gardeners’ being my favourite! The Royal Horticultural Society Encyclopaedia of Plants and Flowers is any gardener’s handbook… and there is a beautiful new edition out… Plants remain the best choice of gift for any gardener though!

President’s Cup Words: Eamonn Keogh

National League: Division 1 Fr Mathews, Cork 86 Scotts Lakers St Paul’s, Killarney 92 SCOTTS Lakers claimed their biggest result of the season with a superb six-point win over Fr Mathews in the quarter final of the President’s Cup at Coláiste Chríost Rí, Cork on Sunday. It was win achieved against all the odds considering that the Cork side had a comfortable win over the Lakers in the league the previous week and also due to the fact that the Killarney side were without three key players for the cup tie. Coach Cormac O’Donoghue had to plan without the influential Mark Greene, who was ruled out through injury while Mihail Kapitanov picked up an injury in the league match last week and has returned to Bulgaria. Scotts Lakers were also without big Padraig Lucey due to football commitments. Despite these setbacks, the Killarney side took the game to Fr Mathews from the start and subsequently gained control from an early stage and never looked back. Antuan Bootle was having one of his better games and with Dan Griffin and Andrew Fitzgerald also doing well, Scotts Lakers were 19-12 ahead at the end of the first quarter. Team captain Philip O’Connor was outstanding in the point guard role while Justin Tuason and Cian Clernon also impressed and the Killarney side stayed in front to lead 40-34 at half-time. The Lakers continued to dominate leading 46-38 at an early stage in the second half before enjoying a commanding 15-point lead, 82-67 with 1.37 left in the third quarter. Fr Mathews had a late rally in the final quarter with American Marcus Thomas making the big scores as the gap was cut to five points entering the final two minutes. Veteran Shane Horgan was a calming influence for the Killarney side as he nailed seven free throws to keep the Lakers in front. It was a superb allround team performance from Cormac O’Donoghue’s side with five players on double scoring figures. It was also a game that young players Paul Clarke and Mark O’Shea played a prominent role. Scotts Lakers now go forward to play Ballincollig in the cup semi-final while Killorglin face Neptune in the other semi-final. These games will take place at the Neptune Stadium Cork in early January. Scotts Lakers St Paul’s Killarney: Antuan Bootle 23, Dan Griffin 20, Andrew Fitzgerald 13, Philip O’Connor 13, Justin Tuason 10, Shane Horgan 7, Cian Clernon 6, Mark O’Shea, Paul Clarke, Billy Wiseman. Fr Mathews: Marcus Thomas 29, Mike McGinn 18, Cillian Fahy 11

Scotts Lakers v Sligo All-Stars: Five Things To Watch Out For

The Lakers need two wins from two if they want to play in Division 1A after Christmas, writes Adam Moynihan

National League: Division 1 Scotts Lakers v EJ Sligo All-Stars Sunday, December 10, at 3pm (Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre) 1. End of Part One This weekend’s double-header marks the halfway point in the campaign for the Lakers as they complete their schedule for the first phase of the 2017/18 Division 1 season. Saturday’s away tie against Carlow and Sunday’s home game against Sligo will be their final two games before the league is divided into two after Christmas. It has been a bit of a mixed bag for the Lakers so far as they’ve struggled to find consistency in their first year back in the National League. Promising wins over the Dublin Lions and LIT were followed by a four-game losing streak and impressive results against the Titans of Galway and Ulster University led only to tough defeats versus Ballincollig and Fr Mathews respectively. While fourth-place Carlow are

sure to be a difficult match up, the home game against second-from-bottom Sligo should provide Cormac O’Donoghue’s side with a good opportunity to head into the winter break in positive form.

2. 1A or 1B? At the end of this part of the competition, the league will be divided into Division 1A and Division 1B. The Lakers, who are currently ninth, would need to win both of their games this weekend to give themselves any chance of finishing in the top seven and progressing to 1A. If they come up short, they’ll join the remaining six teams in 1B. Those seven teams will then play each other one more time in the New Year with the winners claiming the Division 1 Shield.

3. Sligo looking to snap cold streak After a fairly promising opening few weeks which saw them beat both LIT and the Portlaoise Panthers, Sligo’s season took a turn when they lost heavily to Killorglin at the start of October and they haven’t won since. Their current run of eight consecutive losses is the worst any team

has had this season and has left them joint twelfth with a points difference of -205. This is just Sligo’s second year back in the league but they sampled some success at the beginning of 2017 as they made it all the way to the final of the Presidents Cup. They eventually lost to Cork kingpins Neptune, 97-85.

4. Cup momentum could be key Confidence must have been low after the home defeat to Fr Mathews two weeks ago but the Lakers deserve a huge amount of credit for bouncing back and defeating the same opposition in the quarter final of the cup last weekend. Antuan Bootle top-scored with 21 as the Lakers ran out 85-92 winners away in Cork to secure their place in the last four of the Presidents Cup. They’ll play Ballincollig in that semi next month with the winners facing either Neptune or Killorglin in the final. The Lakers will be hoping to carry some momentum into this weekend’s league fixtures.

5. How will the Lakers line out? Pádraig Lucey, who sat out the last couple of games, is expected to make a welcome return to the fold and his size will make a big difference at both ends of the floor. His return will also take some pressure off the other big men, namely Andrew Fitzgerald and Antuan Bootle, who had been playing increased minutes in his absence. This, in turn, will allow Cormac O’Donoghue to give Justin Tuason more playing time if he so desires. Mihail Kapitanov, meanwhile, has been unavailable for the past two weeks and is not expected to play.

Four In A Row For Resilient Rathmore A dogged second-half fightback was enough to see off Legion and make history, writes Adam Moynihan

O’Donoghue Cup Final Rathmore 0-11 Legion 0-10 Rathmore staged a late comeback on Sunday to defeat Legion in the O’Donoghue Cup final and in the process become only the second club ever to win four East Kerry Championships in a row.

Shane Ryan and Eoin Lawlor were a real handful all day but overall it was a tremendous team effort Trailing by three with ten minutes to play, Rathmore showed great heart to rally and score the last four points of the game as Legion, who had dominated the early exchanges, faded quite dramatically in the final quarter. Rathmore are used to winning these kinds of games and that was probably the deciding factor in what was a fiercely-contested encounter. Much of the talk in the build up to this game had been centred on Dr Crokes’ decision to pull out of their semi-final date with Legion, which in turn sent Alan O’Neill’s team through to the decider without kicking a single ball. The Derreen side hadn’t played a competitive game since the start of September so there were real concerns about their match sharpness heading into this one but those fears seemed to be misguided when they raced into a commanding first-half lead. Shane Ryan cancelled out Jamie O’Sullivan’s opener in the 8th minute but then Legion’s talisman James O’Donoghue took the game by the scruff of the neck as he kicked three points in as many minutes to make it 4-1. Brian Kelly kept Legion ahead with a smart save from Eoin Lawlor before O’Donoghue tapped over a free at the other end to extend Legion’s lead to four. Shane Ryan somehow powered his way through a series of tackles and swung over an excellent score in the 22nd minute to make it 5-2 and Eoin Lawlor pulled another one back moments later when he cleverly played a one-two from a free out on the right and popped over his first score of the game. O’Donoghue continued to terrorise the Rathmore defence and, with five minutes to play in the half, he turned and kicked a beauty from the left-hand side. Two more scores from Shane Ryan made it a

X

one-point game as the period drew to a close but the former Player of the Year had the last say in stoppage time as he took his tally to six with another expertly taken point. Although Rathmore were improving steadily, Legion led 7-5 at the break. Rathmore started the second half strongly. Ryan reduced the deficit with another free and in the 39th minute, Eoin Lawlor equalised with a huge score from distance. Legion needed to steady the ship and they did just that as frees from O’Sullivan and O’Donoghue re-established their supremacy heading into the final fifteen minutes. When O’Donoghue burst forward in the 47th minute and kicked his eighth point of the day, Legion, who were hoping to win their first O’Donoghue Cup since 1976, led by three. Rathmore still trailed by a goal with just ten minutes remaining and their quest for a historic four in a row was in real jeopardy. It was certainly a time to stand up and be counted and Derek Moynihan’s players duly obliged as a remarkable two-minute spell completely turned the tie on its head. In the 51st minute, Shane Ryan made it 10-8 with another well-taken free and it was 10-9 just seconds later when substitute Mark Reen chipped in with a crucial score. The comeback was complete a minute after that when youngster Mark Ryan came forward from midfield and kicked an inspirational leveller. Now Legion were on the ropes and although they had enough of the ball, they just couldn’t create the right kind of opening in the closing stages. Rathmore could have won it with a goal in the 55th minute but Kerry minor Brian Friel sliced his shot wide. With both teams running out of ideas, the game appeared to be creeping towards extra time but

Rathmore midfielder Donal O’Sullivan had other ideas. O’Sullivan gathered possession around 45 yards from goal, slipped by an opponent and nailed a monumental point to give his side the lead for the first time in the game. Jamie O’Sullivan had one final opportunity for Legion but he missed his long-range free and Rathmore were champions once again. In the end, a Man of the Match display from James O’Donoghue wasn’t enough for the Legion as they fell to another crushing final defeat. One positive was the performance of Sem captain Cian Gammell who was exceptional in his first big championship game at senior level. For Rathmore, Shane Ryan and Eoin Lawlor were a real handful all day but overall it was a tremendous team effort, particularly down the stretch when their backs were against the wall. O’Donoghue Cups don’t come easy so to win four on the bounce is a truly incredible achievement. Rathmore scorers: Shane Ryan (0-6, 4f), Eoin Lawlor (0-2), Mark Reen (0-1), Mark Ryan (0-1) and Donal O’Sullivan (0-1). Legion scorers: James O’Donoghue (0-8, 3f) and Jamie O’Sullivan (0-2, 1f). Top Honour For Tom As He Heads To World Games Tom Doherty pictured with South African athletes Frederick Furstenburg and Anthony Butler in the javelin event.

Words: Eve Kelliher KILLARNEY athlete Tom Doherty was honoured at the Irish Wheelchair Association Sport Athletics Grand Prix national awards dinner in Kilkenny last week. Never one to rest on his laurels, Tom is continuing with a busy schedule as he jetted to the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports World Games in Vila Real De San Antonio, Portugal. At the Games, which concluded on Wednesday,

Tom competed in the shot put, discus and javelin events. “It was a fantastic experience to represent Ireland in the International Wheelchair and Amputee World Games,” Tom told Killarney Advertiser. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank my national coaches and of course Killarney Valley Athletic Club for their great support through out the year and their inclusive

Kerry Draft In Leading Basketball Coach James Weldon KERRY manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice has drafted in leading basketball coach James Weldon to take on some coaching responsibilities with the Kingdom’s footballers in 2018. The Killarney man has coached at Superleague and international level and is an expert on the technical

side of the game. He began his duties as Kerry returned to pre-season training on Wednesday night. The 40-year-old’s appointment extends the growing influence basketball coaching is having on Gaelic football, particularly in the areas special awareness and footwork.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy THE focus switches this weekend to the European Cup and Munster will be hoping to extend their good run of late ahead of a tough few matches to come. Last weekend Munster took on Welsh outfit the Ospreys to Irish Independent Park in Cork, winning handsomely on a scoreline of 36 points to 10 with Ian Keatley sublime from the boot. New signing Christ Cloete followed up his man of the match award the previous weekend with a try and is a powerhouse to contend with. Next weekend the men in red host old European foes Leicester Tigers at Thomond Park and head to Welford Road the following week in what will be two vital matches for new coach Johan Van Graan’s side. Following that there is the huge

membership policy.” The award-winning athlete also endorsed the Killarney Microtrack project. “Participation in athletics has so many positive outcome for us all, no matter what your level or ambition,” said Tom. “There is no doubt in my mind that the construction of the Killarney Microtrack project would be a great addition to the sporting heritage and wellbeing of our town.”

Included are some of the prizewinners and participants with the Overall Nett prize going to Joey McCarthy and the Overall Gross to Cillian Courtney. We thank Club Chairman Damien Fleming for his sponsorship of last Saturday’s event.

Honour For James Fleming THE Basketball Ireland Player and Coach of the Month awards for November have been announced and there was good news for Killarney native James Fleming, who was named as Women’s Division One Coach of the Month. James, who is the head coach with Fr Mathews (Cork), scooped the top award after his talented side remain unbeaten throughout all competitions this season. In the month of November, Fr Mathews defeated Meteors in the champions trophy and Marble City Hawks in the national cup quarter final as well as enjoying league wins over UL Huskies, Swords Thunder and Donegal. A former Killarney Superleague player and senior ladies head coach,

match on ST Stephen’s Day where Leinster come to Thomond Park. The new coach will have his work cut out for him, but from what I hear he is well able for the task. Unfortunately Munster and player contracts are making the headlines yet again. Having only recently lost Simon Zebo to an as yet unnamed French side, contract negotiations are not going well for captain and Lion Peter O’Mahony or CJ Stander. Rumour has it that both have rejected the deals on offer by the IRFU and David Nucifora. It would be absolutely tragic to lose the likes of these two stalwarts and

James is also coach with the ST Paul’s U-14 girls team. He is also well known as a former Dr Crokes senior football championship-winning captain. Fr Mathews, who also include Caherciveen native Amy Fitzgerald, also had star player Niamh Dwyer collecting the player of the month award. Coach Fleming’s side remain top of the division one league and remain on course for promotion to the Superleague.

the question would have to be asked why the IRFU is not breaking the bank to keep them. Or is it the way things have gone with players’ agents during contract negotiations? Either way can lose afford to lose these two or allow the floodgates to open with Conor Murray the next on someone’s wishlist? It does seem that the IRFU and Joe Schmidt hold the power but for the sake of Munster’s future we need to keep our big names and not become a feeder club for others to pilfer while the likes of Leinster suffer no such problems. Only time will tell.

O’Donoghue Cup Triumph Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald Rathmore completed four in a row of East Kerry senior football championships, when they won the coveted O’Donoghue Cup at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last defeating a gallant Legion side by 11 points to 10. It took a late burst by Rathmore and two points from Donal O’Sullivan in time added on to claim this victory. The game was played in the Fitzgerald Stadium on a perfect day for football considering that December is with us. Legion failed to score in the last quarter as Rathmore wiped out a threepoint deficit, when they upped their game. The winners were without the services of Paul Murphy their Kerry star, who is on an extended holiday in Australia after the International Rules series of games. They had to make three changes to the selected team. Cathal Murphy came in for Brian O’Leary, Aidan O’Mahony for T J Friel and John Moynihan for Mark Reen. Legion played as selected.

ACCURACY OF JAMES O’DONOGHUE Rathmore started very slowly as the Legion were at their best especially James O’Donoghue. One felt that Rathmore needed a man of Paul Murphy’s ability to curb the rampant O’Donoghue. He gave a superb display especially for 45 minutes but in that final quarter Legion could not get the ball to their sharpshooter. Jamie O’Sullivan opened the scoring with a well-taken point in the third minute. Then James O’Donoghue took over the mantle of point scoring. The Legion defence was impressive in the early stages with the youthful Cian Gammel catching the eye. Shane Ryan was the only threat in the Rathmore forward line and he opened the scoring for his side with a pointed free in the 6th minute. James O’Donoghue

capitalised on the Legion supremacy. He scored points both from play and from frees in the 7th, 9th and 11th minutes to put Legion clear four points to one. Rathmore very nearly scored a goal in the 12th minute when Brian Friel struck a fine shot, but Brian Kelly the Kerry ’keeper made an excellent save, the only real chance of a goal at this stage even though Donal Lyne was in search of a Legion goal until he slipped and the ball was cleared. It was five points to one after 20 minutes. Legion were well on top in all departments. Shane Ryan and Eoin Lawlor reduced the deficit when Ryan slipped and any chance of a goal did not materialise. He added a point. James O’Donoghue kicked his fifth point in the 23rd minute but Ryan got one back for Rathmore with the scoreboard reading six points for the Legion and five for Rathmore. O’Donoghue scored his side’s seventh point in time added on by referee Donal Casey.

LEGION ON TOP Legion led at half time by seven points to five. Such was Legion’s dominance in play over the first half, but they were too reliant on O’Donoghue. He scored six points in the first half and the only other Legion player to score was Jamie O’Sullivan who had scored the first point. Shane Ryan got one back in the 36th minute and three minutes later Eoin Lawlor tied up the scoring. Shaun Keane was wide with an attempt at a point. In the 40th minute Jamie O’Sullivan pointed a free to go ahead once more. James O’Donoghue kicked two more points at the end of the third quarter and that concluded the Legion’s total score of 10 points. They were still three points to the good, but they wilted in that final quarter.

RATHMORE IN CONTROL Rathmore midfielders took control with points by Shane Ryan and Mark Reen to leave Legion just one point ahead with 10 minutes left in the game. Donal O’Sullivan came powering through the middle to score twice. Legion got one final chance in time added on, when the referee awarded them a free. It was far out so Jamie O’Sullivan was given the opportunity to send the game in to extra time but he was unable to convert it for an equalising point. Rathmore are worthy winners especially for their display in the final quarter. When they sensed victory they kept the pressure on to fashion a win that seemed beyond them for so much of this entertaining O’Donoghue Cup final. Hard luck on Legion who led for most of the game only to lose out in time added on.

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC Rathmore captain Brendan O’Keeffe raised the cup once more. He had the distinction of captaining the side to victory in 2015 and in 2016. Now he completed the three in a row as a winning captain. He is the son of John D O’Keeffe and a brother of George. Both of those captained Rathmore in the past. The successful management team from Rathmore was Padraig Murphy, Derek Moynihan and Donnacha Crowley. The Legion management team was Alan O’Neill, Sean O’Sullivan and Jamsie O’Sullivan.

GEANEY’S SEVEN POINTS Just like James O’Donoghue’s scoring feats in East Kerry, Paul Geaney scored seven points for Dingle and still lost to An Ghaeltacht who won 2-4 to 0-9.

Enda Scoops Monthly Fantasy Prize

They say a good start is half the battle and Enda O’Connor will testify to that as two huge scores at the start of November propelled him to the top of the Killarney Advertiser monthly fantasy football table. Enda, a Killarney native who currently lives in the States, picked up a combined total of 179 points in Gameweeks 11 and 12 to race out into the lead and another good score of 69 in Gameweek 13 gave him a virtually unassailable lead. Enda captained Mohamed Salah ahead of Liverpool’s trip to West Ham back on November 4 and the Egyptian really came up trumps, scoring twice in the Reds’ 4-1 win to earn 30 points. Chelsea defender César Azpilicueta also chipped in with a 12-pointer as November’s champion racked up an impressive score of 87. The following weekend he amassed a whopping 92

Enda, a Killarney native who currently lives in the States, picked up a combined total of 179 points in Gameweeks 11 and 12 to race out into the lead points as Salah, Pascal Groß, Richarlison, Álvaro Morata and Oumar Niasse all found the target. In the end, his fairly average tally of 48 in the final week of the month was more than enough as he secured the top spot with 17 points to spare. Allan O’Connor, who picked up 66 in Gameweek 15, finished second and Daniel Foley completed the top three. In the overall table, Cian Tobin and Noel Duggan lead the way on 883 points, ten clear of Patrick Collins back in third. Sports columnist Adam Moynihan was quick to congratulate Enda on his win. “Well done to Enda,” he said. “Those scores at the start of the month really set him up well. Everyone else was playing catch up after that. He’ll have a €50 voucher for Brian James waiting for him next time he comes home.” Looking ahead to the next set of fixtures, Adam was hesitant to offer suggestions. “I’m having a mare at the moment,” he said. “A right meltdown. I left David de Gea on the bench last week and he had the game of his life. I’m in no position to be giving advice.” Cian Tobin and Noel Duggan may be out ahead in the overall table but Adam urged those in the chasing pack not to get discouraged. “I wouldn’t be too worried about Cian Tobin,” he insisted. “He’s a spoofer and he’ll be found out eventually.” Inset: Enda O’Connor

A hard-earned victory for the Cougars at the Pres Gym in this Division 1 clash as Kcyms competed throughout without getting the scores on the board to give Cougars a slighlty flattering winning margin.
