Fossa plans get go-ahead despite reservations on traffic management Local councillors and politicians often accuse Dublin-based government agencies of being out of touch with daily happenings in rural Ireland. | By Sean Moriarty This was laid bare at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting where plans for the €2 million traffic calming plan in Fossa were put to the elected members. Senior Kerry County Council engineers unveiled detailed plans for the much awaited project. Plans included a shared-use cycle and pedestrian path on each side of the road, provision of a controlled pedestrian crossing at Fossa National School and the extension of existing public lighting in the village. The plan also includes the realignment of the junction at the Gap Road but does not include the provision of dedicated bus stops along the redevelopment. These last two items caused a huge degree of bewilderment with the elected councillors. While they were allowed to make recommendations to change some aspects of the plans – the school crossing was

changed from a Zebra crossing to a push-button crossing – the latter two items could not be changed as they fall under Transport Infrastructure Ireland guidelines for rural traffic management schemes. Councillors were left with a dilemma, accept the proposals as they stood or risk losing the anticipated funding which will come on stream by the end of the year.
Councillors raised concerns that traffic attempting to turn into the Gap Road will have to stop and leave exiting traffic out and then cross a continuous white line to complete the manoeuvre. Such was the concern of recently elected Mayor, Niall Kelleher, he sought legal advice on the matter. However that was overturned when Cllr Brendan Cronin moved a motion to accept the plans with
two changes allowed. Colleagues were concerned that if the plans were not accepted on Wednesday, that the whole project would be put on hold. “We cannot redesign national standards. Amendments must fit with national guidelines,” Municipal District Manager John Breen warned the elected councillors ahead of the vote. “We don’t have the authority or the forum to change national design standards.” As a result, all seven elected members voted, some reluctantly, to accept the plan. They felt that the people of Fossa would not thank them for delaying it further but warned that when the plan comes to fruition that they will have answer questions on why traffic at the Gap Cross is coming to a standstill to allow traffic motorists make the turn. They raised similar concerns that the lack of a dedicated bus stop will cause traffic disruption in the village – some cited the delays experienced in Farranfore as an example of why this should be changed. However, that discussion was met with the same response as the Gap Road junction – the national design standards cannot be changed by elected councillors.
Crashed car dumped in Cathedral car park | By Sean Moriarty A town centre car park is being used to store a crash-damaged car and Killarney Municipal District meeting was told this week.
DUMPED: This crashed Suzuki has been left dumped in the car park adjacent to St Mary's Cathedral. Photo: Sean Moriarty
The annual issue of the lack of car parking spaces in Killarney town centre was up for discussion again this month. The issue is further compounded this summer as Kerry County Council did not rent an alternative car park this season to offset the arrival of Bird’s Funfair in the Fair Hill carpark. Councillors raised concerns over the number of cars that are parking on the grounds of St Mary’s Cathedral each day.
The meeting was told that local people are using the Cathedral car park while attending their place of work each day. The meeting also heard about visitors using the car park before heading to the National Park for the day. The excessive parking is causing issues for church goers, particularly at times of weddings and funerals. The meeting was told that family members were unable to gain access to St Mary’s during such occasions. “People can’t get in there, it is being abused highly,” Cllr Donal Grady told the meeting. “There are people dumping cars down there, there is a crashed red Suzuki down there with quite a while. “

Headford student researching cancer treatments Five third level students, including a student from Headford, Killarney, will spend the summer researching increased understanding and possible new treatments for cancer patients in Ireland. Their research, across a range of cancers, is being funded by Breakthrough Cancer Research Summer Scholarship Programme. The charity strives to ensure that patients have access to the best treatments for cancer and never have to be told that there is “no hope.” Among the students are Headford’s Jessica Walsh of University College Cork. She will research the effects of particular molecules on Vitamin D receptors in oesophageal cancer. In Ireland, approximately 500 people are diagnosed every year with this disease and if current projections continue, by 2045 annual cases of oesophageal cancer in men will increase by 115% and 109% in women. Ms Walsh said: “In oesophageal adenocarcinoma (the most common form of oesophageal cancer) we can see an increase in vitamin D receptor protein
expression. In this study, we hope to identify important products created by the body that activates the vitamin D receptor in oesophageal cancer cells. The significance of such findings would contribute to a better understanding of the causes of oesophageal cancer and aid in the development of therapeutic strategies.” Breakthrough is an Irish medical cancer research charity, which aims to inspire and enable financial support for exceptional research into cancer in Ireland leading to more effective treatments for patients in Ireland and Internationally and to improve cancer care and patient survival. To this end they work closely with researchers and clinicians in practice's all over Ireland so that research is targeted at finding new options for poor prognosis and currently incurable cancers.
CONTRACTOR: David Shalloo, Wastewater Regional Delivery Lead with Irish Water has revealed that a contractor had been appointed to the Kilcummin sewage scheme
Contractor appointed to Kilcummin sewage scheme Irish Water, working in partnership with Kerry County Council, has announced Coffey Construction as the contractor for the Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme works that will commence in the coming months.

When complete, the scheme will provide a new sewer collection system for Kilcummin village, that will ensure wastewater from the village is treated appropriately. Once operational, the new sewerage scheme will connect into the sewer network in Killarney town, where it will be collected and transferred to Killarney wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for appropriate treatment. “The appointment of Coffey Construction illustrates our commitment to delivering this project for the community. All new infrastructure has been sized to accommodate future population growth and the project will enhance the local environment and provide a platform for social and economic development well into the future," David
Shalloo, Wastewater Regional Delivery Lead with Irish Water, said. The scheme will ensure compliance with wastewater discharge regulations. It will also improve water quality in the River Deenagh and Lough Leane and protect recreational waters for swimming, fishing, boating and sightseeing, as well as protecting the integrity of the local environment. The new wastewater infrastructure will enhance local amenities and provide a platform for social and economic development. The new sewerage infrastructure to be constructed as part of this scheme will include a sewer network for Kilcummin village, a pumping station, and approximately 6 kms of sewers. The scheme will reduce the reliance on on-site systems such as septic tanks and package treatment plants. Works on the project are expected to commence late in 2022, with the entirety of the project due for completion in 2024.

Killarney athletic stars to represent Ireland Sarah Leahy of Killarney Valley Athletic Club has been selected as part of the 4x100m relay squad for the Irish senior international team for the upcoming World athletics championships in Oregon in the USA later this month. This is one of the local star’s biggest achievements to date. Famously athletic legends like Eamon Coghlan and Sonia O'Sullivan won at these games. “This is a massive and well deserved personal achievement for Sarah. It is also a great honour for the hardworking Killarney Valley Athletics Club.,” said club coach Jerry Griffin. “Sarah is an inspiration for all athletes in Kerry and a great role model for young females. Sarah has demonstrated if you follow your dreams, stay in sport as a young lady and work hard, then any-
thing is possible.” The club is also celebrating the selection of Oisin Lynch who will represent Ireland in the 800m races in the Schools International Track and Field in Belfast on July 16. This is the young St. Brendan's college student's first Irish vest. Oisin, who is coached by his father Con, the distance coach at Killarney Valley Athletic Club, who was also a very accomplished distance athlete and in his career won the 1500m at the World Police Games amongst other accolades.
Bizarre council meeting after merry-go-round discussion | By Sean Moriarty Councillors entered a merry-go-round of a discussion during a bizarre debate at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. The roller-coaster of a conversation heard how some councillors felt that Bird’s Amusements were charging too much for a fairground ride. The cost of rides such as the waltzers left a number of councillors dizzy. One ringmaster told the meeting that: “ A family pass was a lot of expense for an evening out,” and wanted the council to write to the famous funfair in relation to prices charged.
The carnival debate was on a ghost train bound for nowhere after it was met by a lack of amusement by a council official who simply stated that they had no control over what prices any business can set. It is a big wheel that won’t turn but the roundabout discussion was ended by a another councillor who stated Bird’s have been charging the same prices for the last three years. It was a sideshow to more important issues that were up for debate. There was far from a festival atmosphere in the council chamber as the meeting progressed to other matters that were finely poised on a tightrope.
Deerpark children’s play park re-opens after renovation Kerry County Council has announced the re-opening of Deerpark Playground in Killarney following extensive re-furnishment works.
GOING PLACES: Sarah Leahy will race for Ireland in the USA later the month
The works have included the installation of swings, ground play equipment as well as an additional combination play unit. The facility which is on Chestnut Drive opposite Deerpark Retail Centre is
open to the public and is free to use. “Play panels and additional see saws have also been installed,” said a council spokesperson. “The upgraded playground will offer an enriched play experience for all children in a secure and safe environment.” The Deerpark Playground is one of 43 playgrounds open to the public throughout the county.

Free trad concert at St Mary’s COI on Saturday evening St. Mary’s Church of Ireland on Kemmare Place will host a free concert on Saturday night. The tradtional music concert is orgnaised by local musicians Tim O’Shea and Rosie Healy and they will remember the music of some the locality’s finest musicians who are, sadly, no longer with us. The musicians remembered include Con Durham (Dublin and Dingle) who lived most of his life on the Dingle peninsula and played Uilleann Pipes and Whistles, John Cronin (Aghadoe and New York), a fine accordion player, and Stephen Carroll (Maulykevane) who also played accordion. The legendary fiddler Paddy Cronin of (Kiskeam and Boston), who
spent over forty years in America, will also be remembered. “Enjoy a great night of local Kerry Traditional Irish Music and Song with Kerry musicians in the fantastic environs of St Mary’s Church of Ireland,” said O’Shea. “The concert will also feature an original poem and spoken word piece, recounting a visit to Kerry by Belfast poet Adrian Fox, set to the music of Sigerson Clifford.” O’Shea contributes an original song in honour of Con Durham, and two Scottish songs picked up by Tim on his travels. O’Shea and Healy will also play new music from their recently launched album ‘Another skin Too Few’ This free event gets underway at 8pm on Saturday.

Marie Meets
Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.
Sheila has dedicated her entire life to the hotel industry My first encounter with Sheila Casey was a number of years ago when I blew into Killarney in my late teens to be trained in hospitality during the off season at what was the Torc Great Southern Hotel, now the new cinema on Park Road. Sheila, the eldest of six girls from Ballyhar, held the reigns training 20 or more students in Front Office Management each year. As a CERT training centre it was the norm to delve into all departments to give a true experience of how each department liaised to give great guest satisfaction. Pauline Lyne of Park View Guesthouse was the CERT coordinator in my time, responsible for checking in 150 students by 10pm of a Sunday and checking out for 2.30pm each Friday. “At least 150 students from all over Ireland passed through this great facility each year which is a facility I think is hugely lacking in the tourism industry today,” Sheila said. We both wondered how many students during her term, 1991-2022, are still working in hotels. Well I knew one! Sheila Casey has worked for her entire life within the hotel industry in Killarney but is probably best known for so many other positions and huge contributions she has made to the community over the years. “As hotels go, I have always been in the Front Office department - the Great Southern Hotel, The Europe, Torc Great Southern, Gleneagle Hotel Group and I am presently at the Innisfallen Hotel. Killarney is a wonderful place to live and work. There is a huge sense of togetherness and community that is the envy amongst other towns in the country and I think this was proven lately with the arrival of the Ukrainian people,” Sheila said. Sheila has invested all of her free time to

DEDICATED: Sheila Casey has dedicated her entire life to the hotel industry in Killarney.
Killarney, not just in a working capacity. In 1999 she was elected onto the Town Council and became the first female Mayor of Killarney in 2003 and was elected again in 2006. She is actively part of SKAL, the international organisation for travel and tourism for professionals around the world and gave one term as president of the organisation. She's also actively involved with Killarney Soroptimists where she spent a year as President amongst business women who host the hugely successful Pancake Tuesday cof-
fee morning, donating the proceeds to local charities annually. I asked Sheila about KASI. “Killarney Asylum Seekers and Immigrants (KASI) has been in operation since 2003 and if you saw the small office Marilyn Counihan and I worked out of in New Street to where we are today, with a beautiful garden in Ballycasheen and Go Green Cafe & Refill Store on Beech Road, it is hugely rewarding,” Sheila smiled. I thought to myself how the Ukrainian people living at the Innisfallen Hotel had struck gold with Sheila working in Front
Office but also the Chairperson of the local inter agency group which liaises with the HSE, ETB, INTREO, Kerry County Council etc. “Sheila, dare I ask, what do you like to do in your spare time?” Sheila laughed. “I quite enjoy walking and the new walk way by the Flesk River to Ross Road is especially nice. I am quite partial to Killarney House. What a gem we have right in the town centre. I love gardening also and my favourite flower is the peony rose. “Outside of your beloved Killarney Sheila, what are your favourite spots? I concluded. “I loved working with the Town Twinning Committee. Killarney is twinning with such lovely countries and cities, Pleinfeld in Germany is my favourite that we are twinned with. I also love the South of France and enjoyed travelling to Toucan with my sister Joan and her family on occasion. In Ireland, I really love to visit my friends in Bundoran, Co. Donegal which boasts a similar landscape to Kerry. “That’s a long drive to Bundoran Sheila,” I said. “It is Marie but really it’s just a phone call or two and I’m there,” Sheila replied. I wasn’t a bit surprised to hear that and we laughed at the notion that you can take the girl out of Killarney but never Killarney out of the girl. Thank you Sheila Casey. The pleasure was all mine.

Olga Lukavska gave birth to the first Ukrainian born in Killarney She speaks softly so as not to wake the baby. Her eyes glow with happiness. A few weeks ago, Olga gave birth to her third son. She has come a long and difficult way to give birth abroad. | By Natalya Krasnenkova Olga lived in Kyiv with her husband and two sons. Her husband is a musician, Olga is a speech therapist teacher and was six months pregnant when the war broke out. The family did not really believe that war would break out. Therefore, emergency suitcases were not ready and there was no evacuation plan. They simply lived their lives in peace and prayer. Olga and her husband prepared for the birth of a child through The Secret of Happiness St. Jude Novena prayers. At the beginning of the war, Olga's two sons were with her grandmother in Western Ukraine. On February 24, she woke from explosions. The war started very loudly. Next to Olga's house is Gostomel Airport, where the Russian landing party began arrived. It was necessary to evacuate immediately. Friends offered to take Olga's family out in their car. But all the roads from Kyiv were filled with cars, traffic jams stretched for many kilometers. All 4 million Kyivites tried to leave the capital as soon as possible to escape. To get to the evacuation car the pregnant woman and her husband had to cross fields. "This field has been my biggest test," says Olga. She ran across the field in complete darkness, holding a guinea pig cage in one hand and her stomach in her other hand. The man with their things was running

nearby. There were constant explosions around, helicopters flew low, the airport was on fire on the horizon, where there was already a battle with the Russian landing party. At that moment, Olga was thinking about what she should do to save her future child. She and her husband prayed incessantly. Olga still thanks God for her salvation. At the last moment, they managed to get in the car and leave. Along the way, they saw rockets hitting different cities. The road to western Ukraine stretched for 15 hours. And then the journey continued for a few more months. Olga's husband stayed, and she and her two small children, mother and brother, left. "We thought we were leaving Ukraine for a few weeks and would have time to return to child-
birth," she said. However, fate took the family across Europe and eventually led to Ireland. After staying at a Killarney hotel, Olga had a lot of worries, because it was necessary to arrange for children to go to school and kindergarten, Prepare for childbirth, learn how the medical system works and collect all the necessary things for the baby. She says that the birth went better than expected. For this she is grateful first of all to God, but also to the medical staff, volunteers from KASI and all the people who supported her. Parents from St Olivers and the Ballyspillane centre also helped her. "I received a lot of support from the people who helped me at every stage, from organising medical care to collecting things in the maternity hospital, buying all the necessary things for my

"Now, when I look back a few months ago, I realise that I was under a lot of stress. But my psyche was strong. Now I will remember our long journey from Kyiv to Killarney like a dream. During which I had only one thought that I should save the children. It was my mission that gave me incredible strength. FAMILY: Pro golfer Pádraig Harrington shares a joke with Peter McEnery and Peter’s parents Patricia and John at the Pro-Am this week. Photo: Michael Molamphy
Always meet your heroes
Peter McEnery (26) from Kerry has cystic fibrosis and his wish to play golf with Pádraig Harrington was granted in 2010 when was 14. When 14-year-old Peter McEnery’s wish to meet his golf hero, Pádraig Harrington, was granted by Make-A-Wish Ireland in 2010, it gave him a lasting love and appreciation for the sport. He was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) when he was three months old, which is a multi-organ condition that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. Being given his own set of clubs and getting to play with one of the greatest players in golf at 14 gave him a huge boost. Now 26, Peter from Killarney was reunited with Pádraig at the Horizon Irish Open in honour of Make-A-Wish Ireland’s 30th anniversary. The pair hit the links again together at the Pro-Am yesterday. Peter’s dream came true thanks to the charity, which grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. “While Peter didn’t always have the energy for other sports, he had such a great start through Make-A-Wish wish with golf,” says his mum Patricia. The McEnerys live outside Killarney and Peter (now 26) is Patricia and John’s only child. His diagnosis came as a shock as they didn't even know what CF was at the time. A defective gene and its protein product causes the bodies of those with CF to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus. This leads to life-threatening lung infections, and it also stops natural enzymes in the pancreas from helping the body
break down and absorb food. In Peter’s case, the condition has mainly affected his digestive system. “My stomach used to give me an awful lot of bother,” he says. Daily treatment regimens have been a major part of Peter's life, and when he was younger, he usually ended up being admitted to Tralee Hospital once a year. Even so, his mum feels that he has been fortunate overall with the condition as he has mainly remained well. “As it affects his digestion, Peter’s energy levels can be on the floor,” she says. “He is doing very well now but his energy wouldn’t be anywhere near a normal, healthy person’s levels.”
GOLF INTEREST
Peter became interested in golf when he was 13 and his mum decided to apply to Make-A-Wish to have his wish to meet Pádraig Harrington granted. “I felt it would be cool to meet him,” he says. “I thought he was unreal as he had won three major tournaments.” The timing was good as the Irish Open was due to take place at the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club within a few months, so the wish-granters at MakeA-Wish got to work. As a result of the magic they were able to weave, Peter’s wish to meet one of the world's greatest players took place in July 2010, the day before the Open began. “I thought I was only going to meet

Pádraig, but it was arranged that I’d play a few holes with him,” says Peter. When the big day came, Peter was driven from his home to the course in an official Irish Open players' car, just like a pro-golfer. “They brought me up to the driving range where all the professionals were warming up,” says Peter. “Pádraig wasn’t there yet but Darren Clarke came over and gave me a few tips and he was very friendly.” Then came the big moment where Peter got to play the first three holes with Pádraig during his practice round for the main event the following day. “One of the great things about Make-AWish is that they really involve the parents too,” she says. Although Peter wasn't long at the sport, he had taken lessons with Dave Keating at Killarney Golf Club ahead of the wish. He ended up playing very well that day. “I was delighted to be able to meet him,” he says. “I was playing off a high handicap so I’d say he thought I was going to be useless, but I played well enough so I think he appreciated it.” Once Peter had completed his three holes, there was a place reserved for him at the 18th hole. This meant he could go in any time he wanted to watch the players coming through and was guaranteed a good position. Peter is now working part-time at his parents’ office supplies company. He is still a big fan of golf and has a handicap of 4. He thinks that having his wish granted and getting the clubs helped to keep him interested in the sport. On the health front, Peter still spends hours on treatment each day, but he is doing very well thanks to two superdrugsfor CF, Kaftrio and Kalydeco.

Killarney’s 4th of July celebration another success Thousands of spectators lined the streets of the town centre on Monday evening to welcome back the first 4th of July Parade since 2019. It was the key event in Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce's annual celebration of The United States' Independence Day. The festival’s official opening ceremony took place just after 3pm on Monday when Mayor Niall Kelleher and Chamber of Tourism and Commerce vice-president Conor Hennigan hoisted the American and Irish flags over the town hall. “It is very important that we are back after two years,” Mayor Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is great to see all the vibrancy and craic and welcome our American visitors.” A local group of musicians entertained the large crowd that had gathered outside the town hall and they sang both the Irish and American national anthems. Pat Mulcahy, the first lieutenant of the American Legion pledged allegiance to the American flag and many of the gathered crowd joined him in his recitation of
the verse. New for this year was the presentation of state flags to US visitors. American visitors were invited to take their state flag and join in the celebration and there was at least one person there from each of the 50 states. These people were invited to lead the parade later that evening and aded extra colour and vibrancy to the event. Thousands of people, many waving American flags, lined the streets of the town for the big parade and that was followed by a lively hour-long Beat on the Street from 8pm. Ireland’s multi-award winning soul performer Buck Taylor entertained the masses at the Soul in the Park at 9pm and at 10 o’clock the celebrations continued in fabulous fashion with an open air screening of the hit movie 'The Greatest Showman' on the lawns of Killarney House and Gardens. The Killarney 4th of July celebration concluded with a fireworks display just after 11pm. The festival is organised by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce with support from Kerry County Council and Fáilte Ireland as well as sponsors Heineken.

THE KILLARNEY ADVERTISER SAYS Our journalist SEAN MORIARTY shares his thoughts on the week's news
4th of July parade proved there is more room for pedestrianisation The subject of town centre pedestrianisation is always a hot topic in Killarney.
NEW: Members of The Rising hail from Fossa. Kilcummin and Castleisland
Killarney band added to Féile Lughnasadh Milltown programme
Milltown will host a fantastic lineup of traditional music for the Féile Lughnasadh, running in the mid-Kerry location from July 28 to 31. Joining Sharon Shannon and Jiggy will be local trad sensation 'The Rising', a gifted quartet of musicians, formed to coincide with the centenary of the Easter Rising in 2016 and going from strength to strength since. The band comprises University of Limerick music students Seán Kelliher and Stephen O’Leary, Cian O’Sullivan who are studying medicine and veterinary student Thomas Barrett. Seán, from Fossa, plays guitar and banjo,
Cian, also from Fossa, pays the fiddle, Kilcummin native Stephen plays accordion and Thomas, from Castleisland, in on percussion as well as button accordion and he is also a singer and trad dancer. Organiser Owen O'Shea said: "It's great to have local Kerry talent on stage in Milltown, rubbing shoulders with the very best in the trad music scene.” Local CCE Branch chair Turlough O'Brien added, "These guys are simply fantastic and we can all look forward to a great open air gig here in Milltown. The Rising go on stage on Friday, July 29 at 9pm for what promises to be a memorable performance. The concert is free and open air.
Many people want to see more of it. An equal amount want to see less of it. I am firmly in the former camp and believe that the day and night time experience in Killarney town centre would be greatly enhanced if an more European attitude to pedestrianisation was adopted in the town centre. Last summer Killarney Municipal District experimented with Main St. It was closed off to traffic for the duration of each weekend and it greatly added to the atmosphere in the town centre. I would like to see more of this, and Monday night’s spectacular 4th of July parade give us new evidence as to why this is an idea that should be explored further. Street closures, to facilitate the parade, on Main St and Upper New St, meant, by default, that High St has become an unofficial pedestrian zone.
As I walked up the middle of High St, not long after the parade had finished, I noticed just how many people were roaming freely on a street that is usually choc-a-bloc with traffic. Many stopped off at the many bars and shops along the way, it is fair to say that there more people enjoying Upper High St last Monday night than a typical Monday evening. There will always be the argument against this move but the pros outweigh the cons. The vast majority of cars on High St are being driven by people driving around looking for a parking space. If Upper New St was closed then they would have no choice but to divert into Beech Road car park. Rock Road car park, a very much under used asset in the town is less than three minutes’ walk from High St. The advent of the new inner relief road, that will take traffic from New St to Upper High St, will be a godsend – let’s not waste – let’s use it an opportunity to increase footfall on upper High St.

Firies GAA launch "The Big Drop' for Irish Community Air Ambulance Firies Football, Hurling and Ladies Football club has launched an innovative fundraising drive to develop their new playing facilities in Firies village while also raising funds for the Irish Community Air Ambulance Service and the vital work they provide throughout the country.

Month-long Kerry homecoming festival launched | By Sean Moriarty A month long festival, aimed at bringing Kerry people who live abroad, back home, has been launched in London. A joint initiative between Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Global Irish Festival Series aims to encourage diaspora to return home to visit Ireland and will provide funding and support, through Local Authorities, for events that tap into international diaspora networks. The Kerry version of the Global Irish Festival Series will be known as An Turas Mor – The Big Journey – and will run for the entire month of October this year. Details were revealed at a special function in the Irish embassy in London on Wednesday evening. The event was attended by new County Mayor John Francis Flynn, Moira Morell, CEO Kerry County Council and John Griffin, Kerry County Council’s Tourism Officer. London-based Killarney people at the launch included Tara Cronin and Noel
O’Sullivan. Patrick O’Leary of the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation also attended the launch. Events in the pipeline include clan gatherings for people who share the surnames: O’Sullivan, McCarthy, Fitzgerald and O’Connor. They will be honoured with a series of dinner dances over the four weekends in the month of October. “We are putting together a series of cultural, sporting and business events throughout the whole month of October to encourage Kerry people to come back to their roots,” Mr Griffin told the Killarney Advertiser. Mayor Flynn said the month-long celebration will be like a re-union. “So many people, families and friends were unable to travel over the last two years, this will be one of the biggest re-unions ever seen in Kerry.” Other plans include a special function to reunite as many former winners of the Kerry London Person of the Year. Noel O’Sullivan, from Ballaugh, the current president of the All Britain GAA Council, is a former winner.
The club has grounds and facilities at Páirc Eamonn in Farranfore but, due to the substantial growth in the club over the past ten years, the grounds can very scarcely accommodate all juvenile football/ladies football teams as well as a vibrant hurling club serving the mid-Kerry hinterland. The club has planning permission obtained for a new training facility adjacent to Firies village which includes grass pitches and a community walking track. In order to finance this development, the club are organising “Firies Big Drop” with prizes worth €25,000. On Saturday, October 1, Firies Football, Hurling and Ladies Football grounds in Farranfore will be virtually divided into a grid with 4000 squares. Taking advantage of the clubs’ proximity to Kerry Airport, a helicopter will fly over Páirc Eamonn, dropping ten balls. Each ticket
sold is allocated a random grid box and if the ball lands on your grid box, you could win a top prize of €10,000 euro. There will also be prizes of €5,000, €2,500, €1,500 and six €1,000 on the day. At the fundraiser launch, Chairman of Firies Football, Hurling & Ladies Football; Tom Kelliher said: “The club is in a fortunate position of experiencing phenomenal growth and while we have secured land and planning permissions for the new pitch, substantial funds are now needed to ignite the spark in Firies. We believe this fundraiser will help Firies secure the future for our players and community for years to come.” Firies Football, Hurling & Ladies Football Club Finance Committees’ Tim Clifford added “10% of all profits form the big drop will go to the Air Ambulance to acknowledge the phenomenal work that they are doing, not only in Firies but beyond”. Tickets for Firies Big Drop are on sale now from https://pallaslotteries.ie/ firiesbigdrop at €50 per ticket with the added incentive of an early bird draw of two All-Ireland Football Tickets and overnight accommodation in Dublin when the ticket is purchased before July 16.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPORT
KILLARNEY
INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY
Green Rebel will be the main sponsor for sailor Pat Lawless as he attempts to become the first Irish person to sail around the world non-stop as part of the Golden Globe Race. Around 6,000 people have climbed Everest while 556 people have been to space, but only 100 people have ever sailed solo nonstop around the world via the five great capes. The Golden Globe Race 2022 will begin on 4th September when 35 sailors depart Les Sables-d’Olonne and aim to sail solo, non-stop around the world, via the five Great Capes and return to Les Sables-d’Olonne. The sponsorship agreement will see Pat’s boat named Green Rebel. Pat Lawless, a carpenter and former fisherman from Kerry will be the only Irish competitor in the yacht race. Pat is 66 years of age and has been sailing all his life. Pat is following in the footsteps of his late father (Pat Lawless Snr) who sailed around the world at the age of 70. Pat will also be raising money for The Parkinson's Association of Ireland as part of the race. Pat said: “This race is a part of sailing history and I cannot wait to get started. There have been 11 solo non-stop sailing races around the world. The first original Golden Globe Race was won by Sir Robert Knox-Johnson, an Englishman. All the other ten races were won by the French. We need to get Ireland on this list. I am delighted that Green Rebel has decided to join me as the main corporate sponsor for this race.” “While I’m in it to win it, this race is all about survival and arrival and I believe I have the right boat and a better chance

of finishing this race than most. I am delighted to have an ambitious, indigenous Irish company like Green Rebel behind me, and I hope I can make them proud.” CEO of Green Rebel, Kieran Ivers said: “This is a fantastic moment for Ireland as Pat sets out on his adventures. Something like this takes bravery, skill and determination and we are thrilled that Green Rebel can support him as he sets off on the Golden Globe Race. Ireland has the opportunity to be a global leader in the offshore wind sector but it will take ambition and courage to make this hap-
pen, values that Pat has in abundance. Man Who Drove Sheep Through London Recruited to Launch Puck Dan Tim O’Sullivan once drove a flock of sheep through the centre of London. Now the Kerry native is set to launch Puck Fair 2022. O’Sullivan’s shepherding adventure was the result of being granted the Freedom of London in recognition of his success running one of the largest construction firms in the UK. An old British tradition allows Freeman to graze sheep in London and in 2021, O’Sullivan decided to exercise that right by driving a flock over Southwark Bridge as thousands of fans looked on. His shepherding stint caught the attention of the Puck Fair Committee, who were impressed by his skill in manoeuvring the animals, which they hope will translate into a knack for crowd control,
a key skill set needed at Puck Fair. Organisers have declined to comment on the rumour that O’Sullivan intends to revive his role by shepherding goats across the bridge in Killorglin. However, they can confirm that O’Sullivan will sing at the press launch, which takes place in Francie Sheahan’s Pub in Killorglin on July, 16 at 8:00 PM. Puck Fair returns in full in August 2022 after a two-year hiatus. The event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19. This year’s fair will take place on the 10th, 11th and 12th of August in Killorglin, County Kerry in line with tradition. The festival kicks off on the 10th of August with the crowning of a mountain goat by a local schoolgirl followed by a parade through Killorglin. The three-day event will also feature a horse fair, cattle
Plan to simplify Garda vetting for volunteers Sinn Féin spokesperson on Law Reform, Equality and Integration, Pa Daly TD, has today announced his plans to introduce legislation which aims to simplify the Garda vetting process for volunteers and workers. “The system of Garda vetting, set out in the National Vetting Bureau Act 2012, is an important measure to protect children and vulnerable adults,” said Daly.
“Garda vetting is used in many professional and voluntary contexts, in both paid and unpaid roles. The vast majority of individuals do not have anything to fear from the process, and it helps organisations and companies feel confident in those they are hiring. “However, the system can be burdensome for many, especially where volunteers are involved as people find themselves having to be vetted by multiple
market, live music, street food, market stalls and a fun fair. A fireworks display will conclude the fair at midnight on August 12th. Puck Fair is the largest festival in the Reeks District and the oldest fair in Ireland. The event is so old that historians disagree about just how far back the tradition goes, leading to various, conflicting origin stories. In one popular legend, Puck Fair started when a wild goat saved the town of Killorglin from Cromwellian invaders. However, it is more likely that the Puck Fair tradition began well before Cromwell’s time and is a continuation of the ancient Gaelic festival of Lughnasa. Festival organisers anticipate that this year’s Puck Fair will draw crowds of people eager to have a bit of craic after two summers of lockdown. organisations. “The legislation I am seeking to introduce sets out to provide a ‘Register of Generalised Consents’ which can help in situations where multiple vetting applications would otherwise have to be made. "It allows an individual to apply for inclusion on this Register. This will allow multiple organisations to vet the individual in question without them having to complete the full process every time. “In an era where many organisations can struggle for volunteers, this small measure should help volunteers by reducing unnecessary bureaucracy, whilst protecting the most vulnerable in our society.”
Eagle eyed adventurers may have spotted two busy storks building their nest on their platform over the past few months as they prepared for their newest inhabitants to hatch. Both mum and chicks are healthy and are settling into their new home. The three chicks are currently growing and finding their strength before they’re ready to take flight with their older siblings. They will eventually feature in the World of Raptors display alongside some of the world’s most magnificent and majestic birds! Storks are born featherless but these chicks are set to grow rapidly over the next few months as they settle into their new home, developing their distinct crisp white and black plumage as well as long slender red legs. When mature they will take flight with an impressive wingspan of 2 metres! White storks are migratory birds, which means they will spend portions of the year in Europe while the weather is warm and food is available, they then fly to Africa and spend several months throughout the winter breeding season. Migratory behaviours are incredibly important because these species are responsible for connecting many ecosystems around the world. However the long and tiresome migration of white storks and many other migratory birds can be perilous due to man-made obstructions along flight paths such as power lines, tall buildings and poaching. These factors can have devastating impacts on the population, with tremendously large flocks travelling over a short period of time, many of these exhausted birds are prone to crossing the same hazards or threats. Speaking about the exciting new arrival, Park and Zoo Manager at Tayto Park Lee Donohoe said: “What an exciting week at Tayto Park to be welcoming three chicks to our already thrilling World of Raptors display.”

The variety of grass One family of plants which you would think will grow better than any here in Kerry, would be grasses… However growing grass which is not indigenous can be tricky. Most grass such as Pennisetums, those of the ‘cat tail’ flowers, enjoy warm, sunny weather, with well drained, light soil. I find that many of the showy Pennisetum, such as P. rubrum, (reddish foliage with purple flowers), Hameln, (green foliage, creamy flowers) or ‘Buttons’, (grey foliage, purple button shaped flowers) really need a long, sunny summer to produce good numbers of flowers and attractive foliage. Autumn colour also depends on light condition. Any Pennisetum I have grown in my garden has not really survived the winter, however, those I grow in pots along a south facing wall do very well. I think they are particularly effective if used as a seasonal plant mixed with bedding. Festuca is a more resilient grass, doing a little better in our wet winters. Festuca also abhors waterlogged soil, and prefers a site in full sun. Festuca glauca is a steely blue, achieving its best colour in a very sunny spot. Stipa is a good grass for most gardens,
Stipa’s ‘pony tails’ has pretty curled foliage and masses of fluffy flowers. Stipa gigantica has elegant flowers which can reach up to 2m, though the foliage only grows to 60cm. Hakonechloa macra is also very tolerant of wet winters. It is a low growing grass which is evergreen, with a lovely fresh, limegreen colour. All grasses prefer well drained soil, and most like the sun. Many look attractive in the winter, even as they go brown, and are much used by insects to hibernate in. Clumps can be cut back severely – I am always in conflict when is the best time. On the one hand, the skeletal fronds look beautiful in the winter sun, so I like to leave to leave the cutting until spring. On the other hand, water can lodge in the base of the plant, causing the whole thing to rot. It would be ideal if we could predict the winter weather – if wet, cut back, if dry and frosty, leave til spring! One grass I would recommend highly for Irish weather is Miscanthus. There are many varieties, from very tall to about 60cm. They all spread, so you will need space. Their flower heads are particularly liked by greenfinches in the winter, so they are the last grasses in our garden to be pruned!

PREMIERE: Olivia Colman as Joy Mully in the movie 'Joyride' which was shot entirely in Kerry last summer.
Kerry-shot film to premier at the Galway Film Fleadh next week A feature film that was shot entirely on location in Kerry premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh last week. ‘Joyride’ starring Olivia Colman, written by Kerry-based screenwriter, Ailbhe Keogan, directed by Emmy award-winning director, Emer Reynolds, and produced by Subotica, was shot over the course of five weeks throughout Tralee and the wider county last summer. The road movie employed a local cast and crew, among them Kerry based Location Manager, Karl King, who led the locations department and Tralee woman, Orla Finucane, who worked as script supervisor. Local acting talent features in the film with both Elaine Kennedy and Tim Landers landing named parts while Aisling O’Sullivan, originally from Kerry, has a key role. Many local services were hired, including accommodation, while a number of local people got to take part as extras during filming. “It couldn’t have happened in Kerry without the work of the Film Development Officer, Siobhan O’Sullivan, and critical organisations in the county that supported its production, namely Kerry College Monavalley Campus, Kerry ETB and Kerry County Council,” Emer Reynolds said. The campus opened its doors to enable
the production team set up a production base at the college. “Learners on our Broadcast Production Courses had a unique opportunity to work with an incredible cast and production team. This opportunity has ultimately culminated with each learner getting a credit to their name, an invaluable outcome for those seeking to establish a career in the industry. The whole experience has been great for Kerry ETB and helps to further position Kerry College Monavalley Campus as the premier provider of quality and versatile trained broadcast production graduates,” said Campus manager Con O’Sullivan. Brian Nolan, lead instructor on the Broadcast Production Skills Course was delighted to see his trainees do so well on ‘Joyride’. "Real world productions are an essential cog in the training wheel," he said. "The students put in the hours practising industry skill. Putting these skills to work in a real world environment is where you fully cement the learning.” Kerry County Council and the Arts Office Creative Ireland Kerry Programme were proactive in backing the production from the outset. “The film industry is a growing one worldwide and we see much opportunity for Kerry to bring more productions to the county,” said Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Francis Flynn.

National Play Day events in Killarney on Saturday A series of free fun events for children between 5 and 17 years of age have been organised for National Play Day which takes at a number of locations in the Gap of Dunloe area on Saturday. The aim of National Play Day is to promote play opportunities for children and young people all across the country, with this year’s theme being Playful Communities. The National Play Day grant scheme is one part of the wider Summer of Play campaign, a government-led initiative designed to remind everyone, young and old, of the fundamental importance of play. In Kerry, events on 7, 8 and 9 July, are being organised by the Kerry Community Response Forum which is coordi-
nating the supports for Ukrainian refugees in the county, but events are open to all children between 5 and 17 years. The two Gap of Dunloe events take place at 10am and 1pm on Saturday. Play sessions for those aged 5-12 will be a time for children to play nature-based games, create some nature crafts and explore at their own pace in a supportive natural space. The play sessions for those aged 12-17 and will be a time for participants to learn some basic bushcraft skills, connect through nature-based activities, and to have time to explore in the outdoors at their own pace. The sessions are delivered by forest therapy providers and take place outdoors in areas of woodland. Bicycle parking could alleviate traffic congestion at major events | By Sean Moriarty Dedicated bicycle parking bays could be used near Fitzgerald Stadium during busy events to alleviate traffic congestion. At last week’s Joint Policing Committee meeting, Green Party member Anluan Dunne raised the issue of illegal parking in the vicinity of the county’s sports stadiums during big events. Matches at Fitzgerald Stadium often
cause traffic problems on the by-pass. Illegal parking is another issue and residents of areas like Dalton’s Avenue and O’Sullivan’s Place are often blocked in during big occasions at the stadium. “Can Kerry County Council commit to supporting alternatives to private-vehicle travel by providing public bicycle parking at sports grounds and other locations which attract large crowds?” Dunne asked the meeting. “For example, there is no public bicycle parking
at Austin Stack Park or the Kerry District League [soccer pitch] in Tralee, Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney or Páirc Uí Aghassigh in Dingle.” In response Kerry County Council said: “We have raised this issue with our Roads and Municipal District Colleagues and will furnish a response. Members will be aware of a significant number of bicycle parking assets added to the three towns named and other locations and as we implement Smart Travel initi-

This increased response to illegal parking, and the widespread media attention it has attracted, has proven successful in deterring illegal and dangerous parking at subsequent fixtures. Sincere thanks to Tralee Gardaí who took this proactive approach. Can AGS (An Garda Síochána) commit to the continuing this approach of zero tolerance to illegal parking with a particular focus on footpath parking and cycle lane parking?” An Garda Síochána said they will continue to monitor illegal parking in the vicinity of major events.

Deja Vu road run nets €40k for Recovery Haven A total of €40,000 was handed over to cancer charity Recovery Haven following Kerry Motor Club’s Déjà Vu event in May. Déjà Vu Tralee was the flagship event in Kerry Motor Club’s year-long 50th-anniversary celebration. The event attracted star names like Craig Breen, Kris Meeke and Killarney’s World Rally Championship star Paul Nagle. It was a joint effort between Déjà Vu Motorsport and the Tralee-based club and the first time that both organisations worked together. Over 150 cars, many of them rarely seen period rally cars, took part in a tour of classic West Kerry rally stages on May 28. As well as celebrating the local club’s milestone anniversary it was also a fundraiser for Recovery Haven. A gala dinner dance at the event’s headquarters, The Rose Hotel, and other associated fundraisers netted a total of €25,000 for the local charity. “On behalf of everyone at Recovery Haven Kerry, I would like to say the most heartfelt thank you to everyone who made Déjà Vu Tralee the most unforgettable weekend ever. "We would like to thank the organisers, Beaty Crawford, Alan Tyndall and their extraordinary team at Déjà Vu for the most amazing opportunity to be part of something so special.
"Add to that, the overwhelming support and enthusiasm from the competitors, the public, and all at Kerry Motor Club, Tralee Chamber Alliance, The Rose Hotel, Paul Nagle and all who attended and supported the auction – we are indebted to you all,” said Marisa Reidy, PR and Marketing Officer, Recovery Haven Kerry. “Déjà Vu Tralee will go down as one of the most exciting, fun and memorable weekends we have ever experienced, and we are truly humbled to receive an incredible €40,000 from the event. We will cherish the memories forever.” Nagle came up with a one-off idea that raised funds for both Recovery Haven in Tralee and Fossa GAA club in Killarney. The helmet that he used during the 2021 WRC season was signed by 21 of the sport’s biggest names including multiple World Rally Champions Sebastien Ogier and Sebastien Loeb. An auction for the helmet, during the gala dinner dance netted, a staggering €25,000, of which €15,000 was donated to the cancer charity and a further €10,000 will be given to Nagle’s home GAA club of Fossa during its ‘Night with Legends’ on Tuesday this week. “I am delighted to be associated with Recovery Haven, every household is affected by cancer,” said Nagle who took time out of his busy WRC schedule to participate in the event.

MABS advising Ulster Bank and KBC customers to switch banks With the departure of Ulster Bank and KBC from the Irish banking market in 2023, the withdrawal of its banking activity and financial services is underway, requiring almost one million customers to switch bank account providers. Customers are currently being contacted on a phased basis by both banks, notifying them of their account closure and the requirement to switch to another provider. MABS, the Money Advice and Budgeting Service, is advising affected customers to switch bank provider sooner rather than later to avoid a last-minute dash that may cause issues for customers. Whether you have been written to
or not, you should start looking at your options to avoid any last-minute delays, according to MABS. For customers who don't close their account within the six month time frame, Ulster Bank and KBC will close their
accounts, issuing a cheque for their account funds. Ulster Bank and KBC will be contacting customers into 2023, giving six months' notice once they have been written to in order to close their accounts. “It’s important that KBC and Ulster Bank customers start the switch over process now, rather than down the line. Customers should take the time to research their options, choosing a provider that best suits their needs. Customers must also allow time for the account set up process, bearing in mind longer wait times if you need to meet in person with your existing or new provider. Rain could not dampen Ring of Kerry cycle spirits Organisers of the annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle have paid tribute to everyone who made last Saturday’s event the success it was. Back after a two-year break, even the inclement weather could not dampen the sprits’ of the 1000s of cyclists who took part. The event could not run without volunteers and event PRO Cathal Walshe thanked them for their efforts. “A big thank you to all our brave, generous cyclists who undertook the Ring in challenging conditions with a strong headwind and frequent showers,” he said.
“Our brilliant Volunteers kept them safe and well fed on the road and in Cahirciveen, Kenmare and Killarney Food Stations. “So many volunteers worked from dawn to dusk on the day completing 100’s of tasks from directing traffic, to filling water bottles to cleaning toilets. “The pre-event planning, dedication, commitment, effort and enthusiasm shown by all our Board, Committee, onthe-day organisers, volunteers, sponsors, well-wishers and of course cyclists is immeasurable/ Organisers have already announced the date for next year’s event. It will take place on July 1, 2023.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL
Woman airlifted from mountains Healthy skin mean after 30 metre fall good health overall Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue
Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966
A woman was airlifted from Cnoc na Toinne in the McGillycuddy Reeks on Tuesday evening after falling 30 metres.
The skin is the human body's largest organ. It's a host to the new buzz word at the moment - Microbiome, which is the connection between the gut health, our overall health and our skins condition. The skins microbiome is part of the physical layer of the skin that protects us from the outside world. Keeping these microorganisms happy and harmonious is key to glowing skin. The gut microbiome works very closely with immune system molecules. If you are not looking after your gut health, it can alter the immune responses , prompting the release of inflammatory molecules. Low level inflammation of the gut over a long period can harm, potentially increasing the risk of inflammatory skin conditions. If there is imbalance between good and bad bacteria and when the bad are multiplying , because of environmental and lifestyle factors such as exposure to UV light , air pollution, poor diet or drinking, it stands to
reason the our skin won't be glowing. It will be dry, dull, congested, lacklustre. Using your products in the wrong way or products with harsh ingredients like retinols and prolonged use of antibiotics are also bad for the gut health. Never use a product on the skin that makes it feel sore, tight, tingly, burning, it couldn't be doing anything positive to your skin. It's always a good idea to use a probiotic after antibiotics to balance the gut health. The skin plays a balancing act between beneficial, neutral and harmful flora that are interrelated with the immune system. Drink plenty of water to keep the body hydrated. If you have being using the same products for a long time, two to three years, it's time to have fresh skin consultation. A change is as good as a rest. Contact Jill to arrange a consultation 0646632966
The woman in her 70s suffered multiple non-life-threatening injuries. A total of 18 members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team were deployed to the scene around 4pm on Tuesday. “The casualty was treated on scene by
team members and a haul system was set up to bring her by stretcher to a safe location on the ridge above, where she was airlifted by R115 Coastguard Heli and subsequently transported to University Hospital Limerick for further treatment,” said a Kerry Mountain Rescue Team spokesperson. The rescue operation concluded at approximately 10pm.

Family and friends to walk in Damien's memory The people of Keel and the wider community are set to remember the late Damien Foley with a memorial walk on Sunday, July 10. Beginning at Keel GAA grounds at 10am, Damien's family, friends and neighbours will complete the Keel Loop Walk to mark what would have been the occasion of his 40th birthday. Damien passed away from Cystic Fibrosis in July 1999 just a few days before his 17th birthday. Damien was a much loved member of the community of Keel and was an avid sports fan, with
the Kerry team and Aston Villa being his particular favourites. Damien attended Castledrum National School and Presentation Secondary School, Milltown, and is fondly remembered by his former school mates as a popular, funny and caring friend. Damien was also a much valued member of Keel underage football teams, with whom he wore the white jersey with immense pride. Damien’s family and friends are asking people to come out and walk all, or even part of, the route with them on Sunday the 10. The walk will begin
at 10am sharp, leaving Keel GAA and heading west along the R561 to Whitegate Crossroads, before turning south to Lachtacalla Quay, following the bank of the River Maine to Boolteens, then to the hill via Lassabee and back to Keel GAA via Gortanedin. In all, the route measures approximately 13km and is easy to moderate in difficulty. People are advised to wear trail shoes or walking boots and dogs are not permitted. Refreshments will be served before and after the walk at Keel GAA and it is expected that the event will have concluded well in time for people to go and
watch Kerry take on Dublin on television later that afternoon. "All proceeds raised by the memorial walk for Damien will be shared between the Cystic Fibrosis Ward at University Hospital Limerick, Irish Community Air Ambulance and Keel GAA Club," Damien Foley from the Memorial Walk Committee said. Contributions are purely voluntary and can be made on the day, in collection buckets in local businesses or online through the following GoFundMe link: The Damien Foley 40th Birthday Memorial Walk.

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT O Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things you have given me as you confirm once again that I never wanted to be separated from you in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted.
IN MEMORIAM
MARY MALONE’S PRAYER FOR HEALING Heavenly Father, I call on you right now in a special way. It is through your power that I was created. Every breath I take, every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing you can certainly re-create me. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any damaged cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild any damaged cells. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let the warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life.I ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen

All-Ireland final spot up for grabs as Kerry and Dublin clash in Croke Park ALL-IRELAND SFC SEMI-FINAL
_____________________________________________________________
Kerry v Dublin Sunday at 3.30pm Croke Park, Live on RTÉ 2 Yearning for it. Those were Jack O’Connor’s words. Not looking forward to it. Not wanting it. These boys have been yearning for another crack at the Dubs. Almost three years have passed since that rousing yet, ultimately, heartbreaking draw in the 2019 All-Ireland final when a young and unfancied Kerry team came within seconds of dismantling Dublin’s historic five-in-
a-row. Whatever about the replay, which Dublin won by six points, that drawn game still hurts. I’m sure many of you reading this tend to re-watch Kerry’s matches whether they win, lose or draw. But you’ve probably never typed ‘2019 all-ireland football final’ into the search bar on YouTube, have you? There’s self-flagellation and then there’s that. No thanks. If that’s how we feel as supporters, imagine how the players recall that day in September. A chance at redemption was scuppered by a combination of Covid and Mark Keane in 2020, and 2021 didn’t go to plan either. This is their long-awaited shot at revenge. This crunch tie is shaping up to be a
50-50 game so the result could well hinge on the availability of star players David Clifford and Con O’Callaghan. Kerry fans will be hoping that Clifford has recovered from the ankle injury he sustained against Mayo two weeks ago. There are little to no sounds emanating from the camp re: Clifford’s status but considering the nature of the injury and how he and the medical team reacted to it, it would come as a surprise if it turned out to be serious enough to rule him out of an All-Ireland semi-final. The Kingdom are also sweating on the availability of Jack Barry (calf) and Adrian Spillane (hamstring). Spillane is believed to be more likely to return to the fold than Barry, but we will have to wait until the team announcement tonight for clarity. As for O’Callaghan, it was reported in the Star this week that he has sustained a hairline fracture which ap-

parently makes him a major doubt for the big game. James McCarthy (hamstring) is also an injury concern. Dublin normally name their starting 15 around three to four hours before throw-in and their full squad even closer to the first whistle, so we won’t know for sure until Sunday afternoon. The GAA are expecting big crowds at this weekend’s semi-finals, although tickets for both matches were still available at time of going to print. Galway v Derry (Saturday at 5pm) will be preceded by the Tailteann Cup final between Cavan and Westmeath (3pm) and the Kerry v Dublin ticket also includes the All-Ireland Junior Championship final between Kilkenny/ London and Warwickshire/New York (1pm). The semi-finals of that competition take place this evening (Friday) at the GAA Centre of Excellence in Abbottstown.

Five head-to-head battles that could tip the scales Adam Moynihan looks at the key duels that will decide Sunday’s All-Ireland semi-final between Kerry and Dublin JASON FOLEY V CON O’CALLAGHAN
The status of Dublin’s most dangerous forward was still up in the air as we were going to print but if he does take to the field on Sunday, his duel with Kerry full back Foley will be pivotal. O’Callaghan reportedly missed the quarter-final victory over Cork due to a hamstring injury but this week Karl O’Kane of the Irish Daily Star suggested that it is actually a hairline fracture (of some bone or another) that is hampering the Cuala star. Kerry will recall that O’Callaghan scored two goals and won a penalty the last time he played against them. The concession of three goals in this seemingly evenly-matched semi-final would surely be fatal. It was Tadhg Morley who picked O’Cal-

laghan up for much of that league game in Thurles in 2021 but now that Morley has been redeployed as a sweeping centre back, the task will almost certainly be handed to Jason Foley. Foley has been superb all season long, marrying his phenomenal pace with aggression, bravery, and intelligence. Few attackers have received change from him in 2022 and his contribution to the team’s impressive defensive record has been notable. If fit, the explosive O’Callaghan will represent his toughest test to date.
BRIAN Ó BEAGLAOICH V CIARÁN KILKENNY
When I interviewed Dara Moynihan earlier this season, I asked him which of his teammates is the toughest to
mark. “Begley,” he replied. “He’s filthy.” The man from An Ghaeltacht is a crafty operator both with and without the ball, making him a strong contender to pair up with Dublin’s all-action dynamo Ciarán Kilkenny. When an understrength Dublin came to Tralee in February, Kilkenny was stationed closer to goal where he was tagged by Jason Foley. He has been listed at half forward in recent matches, however, so it will more than likely be left to a member of Kerry’s half back line to pick him up. Gavin White does his best work on the front foot and Tadhg Morley will be sweeping up, so if Kilkenny does line out at 12 then Ó Beaglaoich appears to be the best option for him.
AN OTHER V BRIAN FENTON
Jack Barry has been a formidable opponent for Brian Fenton in recent seasons but question marks linger over his availability after he missed out on the Mayo game with a calf strain. The team’s elder statesman David Moran replaced Barry a fortnight ago and (despite it being his first start of the season) he gave as assured a display as we’ve seen from any Kerry midfielder in 2022. So, even if Barry is 100% fit, one could make a strong argument for Moran to get the nod regardless. Tracking the tireless Fenton will be a big ask for Moran, who turned 34 last week. It could be a case of Moran v Fenton for a certain period, followed by Barry v Fenton for the remainder (if the Na Gaeil man makes the 26). In fact, Diarmuid O’Connor could also end up marking Fenton for a while depending on how the game develops. Whoever is closest to him, they will need to be impactful if Kerry are to prevail.
PAUDIE CLIFFORD V LEE GANNON
The elder Clifford is relatively new to the team – he’s the only starter who wasn’t a member of the panel in 2019 and only really broke through in 2021 – but the fact of the matter is that Kerry don’t function properly when he’s not at his best. Paudie is a vital link between defence and attack and when he’s kept on the periphery, as he was for long periods against Mayo, Kerry struggle to make that transition from back to front. When he is on his game (which, thankfully, is more often than not) the Fossa man is impossible to pin down and his distribu-
tion is second to none. Dessie Farrell will be acutely aware of this so the job of tagging Kerry’s playmaker-in-chief will be at the forefront of his mind. Lee Gannon picked Paudie up from the start in the spring but the quick and agile Eoin Murchan is another option; both of those men will probably be named at corner back but Paudie will probably be named at corner forward anyway before drifting out the field once the ball is thrown in. James McCarthy might also fancy his chances of disrupting Paudie’s flow – that’s if the Dublin captain has recovered from his hamstring injury in time.
DAVID CLIFFORD V MICK FITZSIMONS
“Any word on David Clifford?” If I heard that question once since June 26, I heard it a hundred times. Unfortunately, the answer is “no”. Nothing official, anyway. Jack O’Connor refused to stage a press conference in the lead up to this All-Ireland semi-final so the injury status of Kerry’s best player is unknown. Fans are naturally concerned for Clifford’s welfare after witnessing him limp around Croke Park for 62 minutes a fortnight ago. Speaking after that Mayo game, O’Connor said Clifford would be going for a scan on his ankle. The results of that scan have not been released to the public and O’Connor made sure he wouldn’t have to face any questions on the matter by foregoing the traditional pre-match press conference. We will need to wait until the team is named at 8pm tonight (Friday) to see if the threetime All-Star is okay to play. For what it’s worth, I would be optimistic that Clifford will play. As I tweeted after the quarter-final, he stayed on the field for over an hour and kicked 1-3, and when he was taken off (after the win had been secured) he wasn’t whisked away by the medical team. He was also walking around freely after the match with no ice pack or assistance. If he does line out on Sunday then Mick Fitzsimons is likely to mark him. The pair faced off in the league in 2021 with Clifford scoring 1-6 (0-5 from play). Davy Byrne, who picked up Clifford back in February, has now recovered from his knee injury and may also be called upon. It goes without saying but I’ll say it anyway: if Clifford is at his brilliant best, Kerry will be there or thereabouts.

08.07.2022
This is the game we have all been waiting for. Dublin v Kerry on the road to lifting the Sam Maguire in 2022. No need for any extra motivation for either side because it is an age-old rivalry. A win will secure the bragging rights for another year at least. Tomorrow (Saturday), Galway will meet Derry in the other All-Ireland semi-final with the Tailteann Cup final as the curtain-raiser. That competition is for the weaker footballing counties but it really is a special All-Ireland nevertheless. What a boost a win will give Cavan or Westmeath. As for the senior category, Dublin have lorded the football scene in recent years winning an unprecedented sixin-a-row between 2015 and 2020. At one stage one wondered if they would make it 10, such was their dominance. They did lose some players but such is the massive pick available to the Capital, the idea was floated that Dublin should field two intercounty teams. Covid entered and Dessie Farrell erred
big-time, defying the restrictions during lockdown and organising an early morning training session. Kick-about or bonding session, call it what you like, it backfired. Not so much the ban he received, but the ructions it caused among the Dublin team. They lost their goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton; he was furious over this training session and never again donned the Dublin geansaí. He never retired officially. Enough said. Dublin were still good but not the normal united force and last year they tripped up amid an unexpected second-half scoring flurry by Mayo. Jim Gavin was missed and their run through this year’s league was pitiful. Most people wrote them off as a spent force, but they are anything but spent. They glided through the Leinster Championship, scoring five goals versus Kildare in the final. It has been much the same championship story by Kerry so on Sunday it will very much be a 50/50 contest. Both teams come ill-prepared for the game.
ODDS SHORTENED
Kerry were installed as clear favourites to win the Sam Maguire, but the odds have shortened after the semi-final when they defeated Mayo in a lacklustre contest. Even at this stage, one cannot count on Kerry after such a flat performance. In that match report I termed it a wishy-washy performance by Kerry, who were there for the taking. Sunday is for redemption and I am confident that Kerry will up their game to play as aspiring champions to be crowned two weeks later. It won’t be easy, but on balance, this fully fit Kerry team can do the business on July 10 and again on July 24. Kerry have the potential to win on Sunday, but they need to play to that potential. Forecasting the expected result of a game is a fallible exercise. So much can go wrong. One cannot pre-determine such variables as unexpected injuries, even one bad vital call by the referee, weather conditions, penalties conceded and penalties missed, not to mind the dreaded penalty shootout that Galway and Armagh had to endure before the Tribesmen advanced. God spare us from a repeat of the injustice of losing any GAA game in such an unacceptable manner. Like so many others, I am opposed to separating teams by a penalty shootout. Dublin will be good, even going into
battle without some key players of the past and without Jim Gavin. If they are allowed to boss Kerry and force the Kingdom to play the game that Dublin wants to dictate, Sam won’t come south. Dublin have still got a cohort of great players like Brian Fenton, James McCarthy, Mick Fitzsimons, Ciarán Kilkenny, Brian Howard, Eoin Murchan, Dean Rock, and wonderboy Con O’Callaghan. I believe that Dublin have improved no end from their dismal league campaign. Kerry trounced them in Tralee that night of torrential rain. Dublin were experimenting. Jack O’Connor fielded strong teams all year, losing just one to a Tyrone team that was fighting to stay in Division 1. Kerry have the players and the game plan to beat any county, but they need to arrive at GAA headquarters on Sunday with their A game. The two weeks since the Mayo game is a short turnaround, but it will suffice if the heads are right. Pre-match injury worries can stymie the best of selectors. Jack O’Connor, Micheál Quirke, and Diarmuid Murphy faced that this week as they selected not just the starting 15, but critically the named subs. In the intensity of the modern game, it takes 18-20 players to optimise performances. Is David Clifford fit to start after being called ashore late into the semi-final? He was hobbling for most of that game and, in my opinion, should have been taken off very early on. With such a short timespan between games, the risk of slowing down recovery from the injury should have been avoided. Hopefully Clifford, one of the country’s greatest current players, will be fully fit to worry Mick Fitzsimons. Is Jack Barry recovered fully from the injury that kept him out of the Mayo game? Would you start David Moran and keep him on for the full 70 minutes? Who can score 1 or 2 goals for Kerry? Who will score 1 or 2 goals for Kerry? These and so many other uncertainties will be of concern for all Kerry supporters worldwide.
TEAM SELECTION
I am happy with the wearers of the Kerry geansaí numbers 1-7, and the cover for the replacement from the bench is good. Midfield is uncertain. David Moran was outstanding against Mayo and lasted the game at full throttle. The Dubs midfielders will be pacey and Brian Fenton is as good a midfielder as any in the country. He can glide in for
two or three points if allowed to do so. Jack Barry has done well on him so if he is fit will he edge out his clubmate from Na Gaeil, Diarmuid O’Connor? The latter has great potential but several below-par performances are disappointing. He may still partner with Moran if Barry is ruled out. Kerry have plenty of good forwards surrounding Chief David. His older brother Paudie didn’t raise a gallop last time out and that was unusual for him. He is a key man to get this Kerry forward unit functioning well and I expect him to bounce back to form on Sunday. Dara Moynihan returning from injury was off the pace of the game versus Mayo and may well not make the starting 15. Stephen O’Brien also fared poorly, but will probably start and make way at some stage for subs such as Killian Spillane, Micheál Burns or Tony Brosnan. Ultimately, victory may come down to the free-taking expertise of Dean Rock and Seánie O’Shea, the best and most consistent free-takers in the game. Any foul inside 50 metres will be punished by this duo, who are not quite as effective in general play. I think Jason Foley will handle Con O’Callaghan and Tadhg Morley is doing well as a sweeper. Eoin Murchan will not be allowed a trouble-free run through the middle of the Kerry defence as happened in the past. I hope Kerry will press up on Evan Comerford for the kickouts and prevent the Dubs from their very successful ploy of winning the kickout close to their own goal, nursing the play slowly upfield, using the wings until a runner knives his way through the middle, unopposed. Once the central defensive area has been breached the defenders’ confidence drops and more goals follow. Danger man on Sunday may well be Cormac Costello. He has won seven All-Ireland medals; did he make the starting 15 in any final? He is a great man to snatch a goal and I expect Jack O’Connor to get Tom O’Sullivan to man-mark him closely on Sunday. Tom had a great game v Mayo, marking Cillian O’Connor out of it and even scoring three points from play - more than O’Connor. On Sunday he must be instructed to stay at home on primary defensive duties and stop Costello from scoring goals and points. Points will not win this game. I expect the winning team will have to score a goal, or even two, to get over the line. I believe Kerry will do just that.

Armagh slight favourites in ladies’ rematch League finalists meet again as Kerry seek All-Ireland semi-final berth ALL-IRELAND SFC QUARTER-FINAL
_____________________________________________________________
Kerry v Armagh Saturday at 5pm Tullamore, Live on TG4 A place in the semi-final of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship is on the line tomorrow (Saturday) when the Kerry ladies take on Armagh in Offaly. The fixture is a rematch of this year’s National League Division 2 final, a game that The Kingdom won with three points to spare. The Ulster women were in the driving seat for long periods back in April but a heroic intervention by Kerry substitute Danielle O’Leary made all the difference. The Rathmore player scored 1-2 as the girls in green and gold overturned a fourpoint second-half deficit. Armagh will naturally be seeking
vengeance at Bórd na Móna Park and with the Mackin sisters Aimee and Bláithín in their ranks they will once again be a tough nut to crack. Kerry are hoping that this will be Bláithín’s last match in Armagh colours for a while; she has committed to sign for AFLW side the Melbourne Demons as soon as her intercounty season has ended. The winners of this game will move on to an All-Ireland semi-final against the winners of Mayo and Cork, which takes place in Ennis tomorrow. On the other side of the draw, favourites Dublin take on Donegal in Carrick-on-Shannon at 2pm and reigning champions Meath face Galway in Tullamore at 7.15pm. The Kerry-Armagh and Meath-Galway double-header will be broadcast live on TG4 while the other quarter-finals will be streamed on the TG4 YouTube channel.

MOONRAKER: Mikie Galvin and Keith Cronin celebrate winning last Saturday’s Moonraker Rally. Photo: Ger Leahy.
Plenty of Killarney interest in Saturday’s rally in Wales Three locally based co-drivers will contest Saturday’s Nicky Grist Rally in mid-Wales – the third round of the British Rally Championship (BRC). Series leaders, Bantry’s Keith Cronin and Aghadoe co-driver Mikie Galvin are the top seeds in the event in their Volkswagen Polo. They won last Saturday’s Munster Car Club’s Abbey Hotel Moonraker Rally. That Baile Bhúirne outing provided an ideal lead-in to Saturday’s rally as they tested various gravel tyre and set-up combinations en-route to the win. The Nicky Grist Rally will the first of four forestry rallies among the remaining five rounds in the 2022 BRC series.
Muckross co-driver Noel O’Sullivan has again teamed up with Welsh driver Osian Pryce in a similar car. They have placed late entry for the Builth Wells based rally and while they will start just after Cronin and Galvin, they will carry number 100 on the doors. Ironically, this will be Pryce’s 100th start. “It’s nice to celebrate my one-hundredth rally with number one hundred on the door,” said Pryce. "I had a few telephone calls when the entry list was published asking why I wasn’t doing the rally. We will start second BRC crew on the road, and we can give it a good go from there.” Rathmore school-teacher Declan Casey will contest the historic element of the rally alongside Michael McDaid in a Ford Escort RS1800.

Killarney Legion GAA SENIOR MENS UPDATE: The Senior B Team made it two home wins in a week with a comfortable but impressive victory over Na Gaeil on Sunday. Luke O'Donoghue, who had a fine first half, opened the scoring which was quickly followed by a Peter McCarthy goal. Evan Smith would later steal in for another goal while Gavin Moriarty, Cian Sheahan and Rob Lucey all kept the scoreboard ticking over in a one sided first half. Luke O'Donoghue picked up where he left off early in the second half while the two Cians, Sheahan
and McCann added further goals. The biggest cheer of the day came when Noel "Mini" Moynihan slotted over a point while Gavin Moriarty added a fifth and final goal with a piledriver. Na Gaeil, to their credit, battled away and they plundered a couple goals of their own to see the game finish with a 5-17 to 3-8 scoreline. A feature of the last few games has been the number of young players lining out, with the Dingle game seeing twelve of the first fifteen being under 21. If they can progress and train to their highest level the future can be bright. Also a big thank you to Maria O’Sullivan and Linda O’Donoghue who made sure both teams were fed and watered after both home games, a nice touch for any visiting team. This weekend the B team are away to Beaufort while the Senior team welcome Ballymacelligott to Direen for the final round of the County League. With this being the final competitive game before the commencement of the Intermediate Championship a good performance is imperative. Throw in is 7.30pm.

Dr Crokes GAA COUNTY SHC: Dr Crokes 4-9 Abbeydorney 4-14. On Saturday last our senior hurlers got our County Championship campaign underway in windy but dry conditions against Abbeydorney in Austin Stack Park. We went into a 2 point to 1 lead in the opening minutes with points from Mark Heffernan and Declan Hickey. Four unanswered scores by Abbeydorney before a Mark Heffernan free meant we trailed 5 points to 3 at the end of the first quarter. Two more points from our opponents before their first goal of the evening as the half time whistle approached. We trailed 1-9 to 0-4 at the break. Three minutes in to the second half Tom Doyle buried a low shot passed the Abbeydorney goal before a Heffernan free cut the gap to 5 points. Abbeydorney’s second goal came just three minutes later, but we responded well keeping the scoreboard ticking over. The second half was a goal fest, 7 goals in 30 minutes. Conor Bohan made some top class saves from close range. Two Mark Heffernan goals cut a 12 point deficit to 6 in a matter of minutes. Both goals were top quality, with our intercounty man able to pick his spot past a packed goalmouth. Abbeydorney’s final goal came a couple of minutes from time. Two Heffernan frees and a well taken goal from Tom Doyle ensured we didn’t go down without a fight. COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 6: Dr Crokes 2-7 Miltown/Castlemaine 4-12. Our third team were defeated by a stronger Miltown/Castlemaine team away from home on Thursday last. We now sit in the middle of the table.

Both teams started brightly and traded early scores before Fossa who were playing with a strong wind in the first half kicked four unanswered points. GG/Cromane responded with a point of their own to leave the half time score at 0-6 to 0-3. GG/Cromane kicked an early score at the start of the second half to close the gap to 2 but the Fossa boys replied with a point before scoring a well worked goal. GG/Cromane with the aid of the breeze scored a goal and 2 points without reply to close the gap to a solitary point. The defence held strong with some fantastic saves from the Fossa goalkeeper. Fossa then scored the last point of the game to leave the final score at 1-8 to 1-6. Well done to both teams in providing a very lively and entertaining game on the night.
