PAGE SIX “Don’t worry about what will happen after the Leaving” Words: Adam Moynihan
When I’m with the lads and we start reminiscing about our school days, someone always says, “wouldn’t it be great craic to be back in the Sem?” You do get a bit nostalgic about it and I definitely have some good memories from my time down there. The stories, even though I’ve heard them and told them a thousand times, are probably still funnier than anything that’s happened to us since. But I can tell you one thing for certain: I do not have fond memories of the Leaving Cert. It was such a stressful period. I think the worst thing for me was the fact that everyone was talking about it all
of the time. Teachers and parents and the media… There was no escaping it. The hype was unreal. Hearing “how are you fixed?” ten times a day gets old fairly quickly, especially when you don’t know the answer. At the risk of shocking my father, I have to admit that I wasn’t the most hard-working student so I definitely felt underprepared heading into the exams, but some of my classmates were so nervous and high-strung it was crazy. It’s wrong at that age to be that stressed out about anything. It’s probably wrong at any age when you think about it. The anxiety was compounded for me because I hadn’t a clue what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go. To me,
that was the scary part. What happens next? It was as though your 14 years of schooling came down to one two-week period and the rest of your life depended on it. In a roundabout way, it kind of did. My performance in the Leaving decided which college I went to and which city I lived in. It decided which course I did and the people I met as a result. It more or less decided my career path and the countries I moved to when I graduated. That two-week period when I was 18 basically shaped my entire life. It’s a weird thought. As it turned out, I got a course I was happy with but if you stopped me outside the Sem on results day and asked
me to predict how the next 10 years would go for me, I would have been so far off it’s actually funny. The places I ended up going, the jobs I ended up doing, the people I ended up meeting… I saw literally none of it coming. But realistically, it didn’t make a blind bit of difference. When it comes down to it, it’s your outlook, not your circumstances, that dictates whether or not things are okay in your life. The happiest and most successful people I know are the ones who can adapt to the unexpected. So do your best in your Leaving but don’t worry too much about where you’re going to wind up. If your outlook is alright, you will be too.
National Park Gets A Makeover Ahead Of Royal Visit Although the trip itself is yet to be officially confirmed (a statement is expected from Buckingham Palace early next week), Killarney is gearing up for the visit of Prince Charles and his wife Camilla with renovations already under way around the National Park. Unconfirmed reports have suggested that the National Parks and Wildlife Service are spending upwards of €10,000 on the makeover, as efforts are well under way to ensure the royals are suitably impressed with their brief visit to our town. It has been suggested that Charles and Camilla will spend four hours in Killarney on Friday, June 15 before moving on their next port of call. Any improvements to our park are, of course, always welcome and fair play for the powers that be for forking out the money to spruce it up a little, but there’s something a bit disconcerting about
their reasoning. Why does it take a royal visit for such an investment? Over half a million non-royals visit Muckross House annually during their stay in Killarney. Why are we making such a fuss over these two particular individuals, especially when they’re only here for a few hours? It seems a bit archaic to be honest. I suppose the argument could be made that Prince Charles and Camilla’s visit will lead to an increase in British tourists coming to Killarney. But is that slightly overestimating the esteem in which the royal family are held in this day and age, even in their own country? Maybe not. Hopefully it does prove to be a great boon to our economy. Either way, I suppose we should be grateful that our National Park got a nice little touch-up. Thanks Charles!

SmallTalk Adam Moynihan caught up with inspirational Killarney teenager Ian O’Connell to chat about his teammates, coming home and meeting Conor McGregor Well Ian. Welcome home. Thank you. How are you finding life back in Killarney? I’m delighted. It’s different but it’s good. Since your accident, the people here really seem to have rowed in behind you. How important has that been? It’s unreal seeing the support. The one thing that motivates me every day is knowing that people are behind me and I’m being supported. You met Conor McGregor recently… What was he like in person? Very nice and very laid back. He stayed with me for 45 minutes. It was the best night of my life. Some people make him out to be very bad but when you meet him it’s a different story. You’ve played football, soccer and hurling with Spa, Celtic, the Crokes and the Sem so I have a few questions about your teammates… Who would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? Michael Horgan. Number one: he hates elevators. Number two: he’d panic and I’d just be trying to calm him down.
Who’s the biggest moaner? Connie Cremin. He’d kick a ball wide and he’d say the laces were a bit out. Who’s the worst dressed? Diarmuid O’Donoghue. What does he wear? You could see him wearing crazy colours. Things like green bottoms and a big, bright pink top. Who spends the most time in the gym? Am I able to say myself? You can. Before my accident I used to go to the gym a load. Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? Probably Cian Murphy. He’s a very good footballer. And the best athlete? I would say Conor Sheahan. He plays rugby with Munster. Who’s your toughest ever opponent? Paul O’Shea from Kilcummin. What’s your proudest sporting moment? Back under 14 I scored four goals for the Crokes hurlers. That’s some going… Yeah. I was very happy with that! And the most embarrassing? I was playing football one time and the ref threw the ball up for the second half. We won the hop and I got it and I kicked it straight into the other team’s full forward line. I forgot we switched sides at half time! Haha… If you could meet any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? I suppose you’ve already met one of them… Yeah I’ve already met McGregor. I’d like to meet Marcus Rashford and Shane Long. What are your five favourite sports in order? Football, hurling, the gym, MMA and I like swimming as well. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? McGregor lifting the two belts.
Ian O’Connell
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Don’t let something someone else said stop you from reaching your dream. Do you have any nicknames? Big Head. Haha… Who gave you that one? I don’t know who actually gave it to me but it seemed to get around the school fast! Do you have any superstitions? Don’t put new shoes on a table. Yeah? That’s a strange one! I’m a big believer of that. I got new shoes the other day. I hadn’t even worn them and the mother put them on the table. I nearly stood up to take them off! What’s your favourite song at the moment? Havana by Camila Cabello. Who would play you in a movie about your life? Eddie Murphy. Haha… Okay, last one: can you tell me a joke? My friend goes around breaking up fights in Dublin. His name is Liam Malone. Haha… Not bad! Thanks for coming in, Ian. No bother.

TOWNTALK Locals Hail Classy, New-Look Laurels The people of Killarney were forced to do a double take when walking and driving through the centre of town this week after the front of the iconic Laurels Pub underwent a significant makeover. The old white, green and red colour scheme has been replaced with a stylish grey and gold look and the end result has been hailed as a major success by suitably impressed locals. “It’s a big change,” says Kate O’Leary, proprietor of the famous old bar. “We’ve had the same colours for the best part of 20 years. I was looking at changing them but I couldn’t make a decision so I went to these interior designers. They picked out colours for me and at first I was like, ‘oh, I don’t know about that…’ but then I said, ‘they know what they’re talking about,’ and
Five Defibrillators In Kilcummin (With Another On The Way) Just over two years ago, a group of five people (Sheila Burke O’Connor, Marie Moloney, Derek O’Leary, Willie Fleming and John Guerin) came together with a vision and determination of providing defibrillators for the parish of Kilcummin. With ongoing fundraising and huge support from the community, they have to-date erected five defibrillators in the parish. On Wednesday night last, a group of over 50 participants from Kilcummin community and surrounds came together for a CPR and Defibrillator use training course. Group member Derek O’Leary organised a team of 9 qualified instructors and a very successful certified training course took place. Derek said: “We were overawed by the turnout but it goes to show that people are very aware of the provision of the defibrillators and the need to be able to use them in the event of an emergency.” The group were delighted to recently receive funding from the Ring of Ker-
ry Cycle committee to enable them to purchase a sixth defibrillator which will shortly be erected. Group Treasurer Willie Fleming said: “We are absolutely delighted with the funding which has enabled us to purchase a 6th defibrillator which we will organise to have erected at a suitable location shortly.” As Kilcummin is known to be one of the biggest parishes in Ireland, the group is determined to continue fundraising to provide additional defibrillators to ensure that no matter where you live in Kilcummin a defibrillator is only minutes away, and also for the maintenance and upkeep of the existing units. As there has already been an additional number of enquiries about a future training course, the Group will be organising further training at a later date and those interested can contact any member of the group for details. All updates and information can also be found on Facebook at “Kilcummin Defib Group”.

I took a leap of faith.” “I’m absolutely thrilled with the results. It maintains the traditional feel of an Irish pub but at the same time it’s a very nice, striking combination of colours.” The reaction locally has been equally positive, Kate explains. “The feedback has been phenomenal. People have been ringing and texting just to say how much they like it. There are a couple of more gold touches to go on it and that’ll finish it off. It changes the look of the Market Cross.” Kate is very active in the Killarney Chamber and she hopes that changes like this will improve the town’s chances in this year’s Tidy Towns. “The more people who can do anything to improve their buildings, it’s all going to help.”
Streetwise Garda Initiative Concludes With Awards A new initiative aimed at creating a greater awareness around crime and enhancing the personal safety of vulnerable people within the Killarney Community was marked with an award ceremony at Killarney Garda Station this week. This was the first award ceremony of its kind in Kerry. The course was developed by St John Of Gods in conjunction with An Garda Síochána and was first launched in Kerry at the Kerry Parents and Friends Centre in Killarney two months ago. A large group from Kerry Parents and Friends attended Killarney Garda Station to receive their awards. The Streetwise Programme provides vulnerable individuals with a greater awareness about crime, which in turn enhances the personal safety of the individual. It is delivered over eight weeks. To date it has been delivered
to individuals in St John Of Gods and Kerry Parents and Friends Association. This award ceremony marked the first group to finish the Streetwise programme. The course was conducted by Garda Mike Milner of Killarney Garda Station. At the ceremony, Sergeant Dermot O’Connell congratulated all the recipients on their achievement and thanked the management and staff of Kerry Parents and Friends for their support and assistance over the last eight weeks. A range of topics were covered including the role of An Garda Síochána, increased vigilance in both the home and when out in the community and how to access the emergency services. It also outlines the consequences of vandalism and concerns around social media abuse.

Old Market Flea
Old Market Flea Moving To New Market Lane The ever-developing New Market Lane is set for further exciting changes this summer as details of a regular flea market have been revealed. Hazel O’Malley and Ciara O’Connor currently run a successful flea market at Old Market Lane (behind the Laurels) and they’ll be bringing the show to New Market Lane over the course of the next couple of months. “The plan is to bring the flea market outdoors,” explains Kevin Le-
ahy of the Black Sheep Café. “It’ll be up in the Market Square outside the front of the café. We’re going to take over a section of the car park on Sunday, June 17 and there’ll be local crafts, some food stalls and vintage clothes. The plan is to have twenty stalls in total and there’ll be some great music on the day as well.” This area is quickly becoming one of the coolest little corners of the town and the flea market is sure to be a welcome addition.
Luke Casey Visits The Chatroom This week we invited local student Luke Casey into The Chatroom to tell us all about his recent trip to Fiji to do charity work. Now, when you think of Fiji, you don’t usually think about poverty; you’d automatically think exotic beaches and things like that, however Luke informed us that about 80% of the Fijian population are living under the poverty line.
Luke told us all about the trip, the organisation he was doing the charity work for, the conditions he experienced when he was living with a local family and why he’d recommend a trip like this to anyone thinking about it. You can catch this newest episode of The Chatroom tonight at 9pm on our website www.killarneyadvertiser.ie or on our Facebook page.
Riverdance is back at Killarney’s INEC
For over two decades, nothing has carried the energy, the sensuality and the spectacle of the international Irish dancing phenomenon, Riverdance. Having played over 11,500 performances to over 25 million people throughout 47 countries, the stage spectacular comes to the INEC for a limited run September 12–16. On April 30, 1994 as the interval act
of the Eurovision Song Contest, a worldwide audience of over 300 million saw the birth of Riverdance. The seven-minute performance earned a standing ovation from the 4,000-strong audience. This ahead of its time dance piece was then developed into a full stage show by producer Moya Doherty, composer Bill Whelan and director John McColgan. With its fusion of Irish and interna-
tional music and dance, Riverdance broke all box office records during its world premieres in Dublin, London and New York and continued to set new records in packed theatres and arenas throughout the world. Staying true to its roots, Riverdance returns to Killarney with a rejuvenated show this summer. Featuring the unbelievable talent of the Riverdance Lead Dancers, the Riverdance Irish
Dance Troupe, the live Riverdance Band and International artists from Russia, Spain and the USA, the show is guaranteed to mesmerise audiences of all ages and culture. The smash hit show will commence its run in the INEC on September 12. For further information please visit www.inec.ie or contact Ceara Scanlon on 064 66 71531 or at ceara.scanlon@ inec.ie.

“A Grave Insult To The People Of Glenflesk” Words: James Knoblauch (Student, St Brendan’s College) I had promised myself after May 26 that I would move on from the referendum. Democracy had spoken, and the majority of people agreed that the constitution had to be changed. However, I felt I had to say something after I read Anne Lucey’s article in the Killarney Advertiser last week. In her analysis of the referendum results in Kerry and in explaining why Glenflesk was the only Killarney area to vote ‘no’, she remarked, “someone said this was because of the quality of the preaching of the parish priest there”. To me, such a comment is a grave insult to the people of Glenflesk and our parish priest. We do have a great a parish priest who has added a whole new sense of life and vigour to our rural community, but the people of Glenflesk are not some conformist flock who blindly stumble into any decision, nor is our church some cult where members are forcefully made to agree to one idea. If this is Mrs Lucey’s understanding of why Glenflesk voted ‘no’, then she has entirely misunderstood the possible reasoning behind the people of Glenflesk and all those who did not vote the way she was advocating. In an attempt to comprehend how anyone could have a different position to hers, Mrs Lucey appears to conclude that those who hold alternate opinions are not sentient individuals or autonomous people, rather pawns of the church. Well, I have spoken to Muslims and atheist students in my year who supported the ‘no’ side, certainly not out of loyalty to a Glenflesk clergyman.
The referendum on the eighth amendment of our constitution brought out a deep divide in our country. If the ‘yes’ side merely sees the ‘no’ side as mindless zombies clutching to the church for guidance, then they have made an error. In a democracy it is important for all sides to respect each other. When villainising those who voted ‘no’ or degrading their decision as not being their own, the ‘yes’ side is ostracising a large part of the population. Nationally, the ‘no’ vote was 33% of the electorate that voted. This is quite a significant proportion of the population given that every main party leader advocated a ‘yes’ vote. David Cameron’s Conservatives won the 2015 election with only 36% of the UK votes and many a great decision has transpired on smaller margins. In Kerry, 42% voted ‘no’. That is a large group to regard as being unable to make their own decisions and I would certainly not think anyone should treat them with such a contemptuous attitude. In Glenflesk, a majority voted ‘no’. Mrs Lucey has taken a cheap shot at the relationship between the people of Glenflesk and our priest. This is a church that has brought together our rural community and formed the pillar of Glenflesk for many years. Amongst our rural locality there is a sense of community that is devoid in many urban regions. Our priest was not the reason the people of Glenflesk voted no. I suggest, Mrs Lucey, that you owe the people of Glenflesk and our priest an apology. James Knoblauch, An unhappy Glenflesk man

A response to Mr Knoblauch Words: Anne Lucey Believe me, I am on the same side as the unhappy Glenflesk man in this respect: I, too, feel I am like some Elizabethan or Cromwellian soldier lost in the bogs of Ballydesmond and I may never get beyond this referendum! But I have to say he is not just misreading, but reading into my statement about the quality of preaching in Glenflesk, in order to take umbrage, in a manner in which I would not have expected outside of the Spanish Inquisition. In fact, we may both be on the same rather solid ground on this one: the clergy did not take an active role, or as near an active as the ‘no’ side would have liked in the run up to the referendum. I heard on the morning of the count the priest in Glenflesk did, and he spoke well on the matter, and this indeed may be what had swayed a majority of the independent minded people there.
So, in a way, this was a back-handed compliment, Mr Knoblauch. I have no idea how this can be regarded as a cheap shot or an attack on the foundations of St Agatha’s Catholic Church in Glenflesk. But the letter rather proves my point: Ireland has changed. And it must have changed utterly, indeed, that if people are persuaded by a priest, and this is written about, even incidentally, it can be taken as a badge of shame, an insult to both priest and congregation, church, community, parish and everything in between? We may well be floundering around the bogs here, and sinking into a hole here and there without proper footwear, and it seems to be we are. But I believe we are some way off the mass rock, the persecution of priests, and thankfully for the young writer, the hedge school. And hopefully for me, I will not be up before the Grand Inquisitor anytime soon.
Notices from the Killarney National Park Liaison Committee LYME DISEASE At a recent meeting where an expert on Lyme Disease informed the group how horrific the effects of the disease are – how the disease is contracted and how to avoid. The disease usually occurs from an infected bite of a tick from a deer, sheep, goat or any animal really. To avoid a bite, make sure you wear long slacks/ trousers when walking in long grass and long sleeves where possible and afterwards brush yourself down. Where one’s symptoms are worsening after treatment, try to make an appointment in Germany where they have excellent diagnostic facilities for identifying same. CARDIAC HILL This is a popular walk for serious walkers. Due to a landslide in the area plus other factors, the walk was deemed dangerous and closed. Good news: remedial work has been done and the walk is now open again to walkers. INNISFALLEN ISLAND This island was ravaged in the very severe winter weather we experienced earlier on and this led to the death of many Sika deer who inhabited the island. This was very unfortunate. We are glad to say
that vegetation is now back to near normal and the deer can be seen nestling in the new growth. New seating is hopefully being provided and the boat trip to the island will be worthwhile. KILLARNEY HOUSE Flowers and flower beds are looking beautiful in front of the house and very well worth a visit. RHODODENDRONS Certain varieties are now in full bloom and others have died away quickly due to the very warm weather. Hitherto a certain variety, the ponticum, has been deemed a villain because of its virulent spreading and for not allowing native species to thrive or survive. Now, however, volunteer work from the Park and local volunteer groups have been very busy in curtailing the plant and hopefully in the future we can observe this rhododendron as a thing of beauty. The Killarney National Park Liaison Committee is comprised of 20 local groups represented at monthly meetings where local issues or aggravations are discussed with Park Management. Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Some Killarney Residents Should Watch Their Gardens Like Hawks
A “compelling” case is being made for the intensive use of lands within walking distance of Killarney town for housing. Close to 700 residential units will be needed, according to the draft Killarney Municipal District Plan for the next six years. For Killarney town, so compelling is the case in the well-put-together, suspiciously cohesive, logically built-up and well-written plan, one wonders if one smells a CPO - a Compulsory Purchase Order? For instance, we are told up front that the zoning strategy is to “build up critical mass” in the towns and villages of the Killarney area. We are told that Killarney is the only town to have enjoyed significant growth, going from 13,760 in 2011 to 15,312 in 2016. Although the growth can’t be properly measured because of changes in census boundaries, we are told in another section. We are told that Killarney has “unique” requirements as a tourist town and that this places significant pressure on local accommodation, in terms of provision and cost. “In addition to the absence of affordable accommodation, the town requires significant numbers of seasonal workers, which creates extra pressure in terms of the high numbers seeking local accommodation and high rental costs,” it is stated. The figure of 685 units is mentioned in
the context of Killarney’s unique status of being the town with the oldest average age in the nation, thanks, we are told, to all the retirees who move here. Significant areas of available and serviced land are not being released onto the market, and the proposal now is for almost 70 hectares south of the bypass and north of the Flesk to be zoned for housing. Next to nothing is to be allowed beyond this until houses have gone up in that area. But the real meat, I suspect, is in the statement that as much as 30 per cent of the new housing will beon “infill or brownfield sites” within the town. (By the way, there is a lovely howler on page 52, under the section “Housing Land Requirement”, where it states that “a principal tenant” of the approach is a sequential approach to zoning of residential lands, extending outwards from the centre. Nice one!) But the part that interests me most is this: “The Local Authority shall facilitate the redevelopment of all backland, infill, vacant and derelict sites throughout the town. It will encourage the construction of well-designed, high-density apartments or residential units subject to achieving a high quality of living accommodation for incoming residents, adequate provision of amenity space and refuse storage.” Then there is the rather cheeky step of corralling the back gardens of the old
houses in New Street, with accompanying map. And statements that New Street is to be” regenerated”. In this context too, the Mission Road and Beech Road car park will be developed for housing and commercial, it is envisaged. Green Lane and Pound Lane are other areas where there is plenty of “underutilised rear residential gardens”. Sunnyhill, too, gets a mention in the unused land context. The “sizeable” gardens in New Street would be developed as “a cohesive unit”, it is envisaged. This is, of course, language for a “new New Street” into the area south and adjoining Beech Road car park. One thing interests me: with the plans for higher density within the town walls, as it were, what sort of heights are we really talking about? Heights like the Plaza? The Cathedral? The Beech Road apartments? The question of height provokes headaches in Killarney and there are real concerns about infill development. So any kind of gung-ho approach as appears in the new town plan about filling in here, there and everywhere on the basis of great need, warrants very careful scrutiny, it seems to me. Already a situation is developing where Kerry County Council have opened an enforcement file on the two-storey mews building underway at the back of the West End, one of the town’s oldest buildings. New Street residents com-
plained that windows are going in at the eastern side where they should not go in in the apartment development and will overlook their gardens and privacy and deprive them of light. A warning letter has been issued from the council to the applicants. And let’s face it, this town has not distinguished itself in the development allowed in many of the old lanes. Back to the draft plan. In the middle of it all, the horseshoe bat gets prime mention in the plan. I can’t understand the horseshoe bat’s import… and have to digress a bit here again. The lesser horseshoe bat gets a whole page to himself. I blinked a bit here. Is this about the jarvey horses and my bad eyesight? No, the lesser horsehoe bat. Actually, he is actually in good condition we are told. Great! However, he could be disturbed by artificial lighting. Okay! Right! On a morning where deer - also protected - are hopping in front of motorists and taking up car parking spaces in Beech Road, I would have thought they deserved a mention in a draft plan for their impact on the town, if only to protect humans? But away from the deer and the bats. If I were a resident of Green and Pound Lanes and Lower New Street, and maybe Sunnyhill, I would be watching my little back garden roost like the proverbial hawk. Submissions can be made until June 15.

Working in conjunction with the Parent’s Council, a small group of the children formed a committee and worked on planning and promoting the walk, as well as educating the classes in the school about the work of the ISPCA. Mary Carroll, Secretary of the Parents Council said, “The children have been so enthusiastic and dedicated to planning the walk, it’s great to see that an idea one of them had, lead to a letter to our Parents Council, and now to this walk. It’s great to see children take
the initiative and support a cause to help make a difference.” Mary Carroll continued, “The walk is a fun day out for families and we welcome all families to come along. There will be a trivia quiz for families to complete as they walk, face-painting and refreshments will be provided. All donations on the day will go directly to support the work of the great work of the ISPCA.” “The walk will leave the Castlerosse carpark at 12pm on Sun June 10th and will follow the circular route via the demesne and back to the carpark, where there will be face-painting and refreshments. Killarney Gin “The True Taste Of Summer” The Killarney Distilling Company, which is owned by the people behind the hugely successful Killarney Brewing Company, have revealed details about their soon-to-be released Killarney Gin - and it sounds delicious. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, owner Paul Sheahan and GM Barry Spellman outlined the plans for their first spirit, which firmly puts Killarney Distilling Company on the map. “The heather honey gin is made with wild Irish botanicals and local raw honey,” Paul explains. “It’s our ode to the hard-working bees of our beautiful surrounds. We wanted something that was indigenous to Killarney. The purple heather of the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks… You can really taste the sweetness of the raw honey as well as the wild botanicals coming through. “We’ve worked for months with one of Ireland’s foremost master distillers to develop our recipe,” Paul continues. “Right now we’re contract distilling it
in small batches off-site and bringing it to Killarney. We’ll be spreading our wings from there. We’re currently in the process of purchasing a site for our distillery, and we’re going to be distilling whiskey. As a precursor to that, we’re developing a gin in order to get the ball rolling.” Gin has very much become the “in” drink in recent times and it is hoped that Killarney Gin will prove to be a popular addition to the market. Pre-orders are currently being taken and the people of Killarney can expect to see it in bars around town and beyond in the not too distant future. “There has been a massive rise in the appetite for gin, not just in Ireland but across Europe and worldwide,” Barry explains. “It’s a classic spirit, a refreshing, flavourful drink that you can make a lot of cocktails with it. It’s perfect for the summertime. Wait ‘til you try our signature Bees Knees cocktail…”

Stockholm Lorry Attacker Jailed For Life An Uzbek man who carried out a lorry attack which killed five people in Sweden last year has been sentenced to life for terrorist crimes. Rakhmat Akilov (40) had expressed sympathy for the Islamic State (IS) group before the attack in Stockholm. But prosecutors had to prove he intended to harm the state, as IS did not say it was behind the attack. Akilov, a rejected asylum seeker, fled the scene but was quickly arrested and confessed during police interrogation. He left Uzbekistan for Sweden in 2014 and sought residency there, but in December 2016 he was told that he had four weeks to leave the country. He disappeared and, a few months before the attack, was put on an official wanted list. On April 7 last year, Akilov hijacked a lorry and drove it at high speed down one
of Stockholm’s busiest shopping streets and into a department store. Five people were killed and 10 more injured in the attack on Drottninggatan (Queen Street). Police discovered an explosive device inside the lorry which was made up of gas canisters and nails. It did not explode properly and only caused fire damage to the vehicle. Akilov reportedly ran from the scene still covered in blood and glass, but was arrested hours later in a northern suburb of Stockholm. He quickly confessed during police interrogation. “He acted with the direct intention to kill as many people as possible,” the court said in its verdict. As well as the five murders, he was found guilty of the attempted murders of 119 other people who were at the scene of the attack.
Trump Corner Trump Asks Trudeau If Canada Burned Down White House Canadians have reacted with dismay to reports US President Donald Trump questioned whether Canada burned down the White House during a call with the country’s leader, Justin Trudeau. British forces did set fire to the presidential residence during the War of 1812 with the US. But Canada did not exist at the time - it was made up of British colonies. “Didn’t you guys burn down the White House?” Mr Trump reportedly asked in a call with Mr Trudeau over new tariffs. It is not clear if the comment was intended as a joke, but CNN report that it followed an exchange in which Mr Trudeau asked how the US could justify the tariffs as a “national securi-

The War of 1812 was in... 1812,” one Twitter user wrote in response to the reports. “The War of 1812 is trending proving once again that 2018 is insane,” another said. “Look on the bright side: At least [Trump] knows what the War of 1812 is and that during it, someone burnt down something,” one user wrote. New York Times correspondent Glenn Thrush joked that “some young Republican researcher is Googling frantically to see if any British-Canadian units did in fact participate”.

Identity Of Sex Offenders To Be Revealed Schools and neighbours will be told the names and addresses of “high-risk” sex offenders who are living in their area and pose a threat after being released from prison. Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan and Communications Minister Denis Naughten announced the draft plan yesterday as part of a series of new measures aimed at ensuring public safety. Under existing laws, gardaí are not allowed to tell concerned citizens if a registered sex offender is generally in their area. However, if draft amendments to the Sex Offenders Act 2001 are passed by the Oireachtas, officers will now be given the right to proactively tell people the name and address of a registered sex offender, if gardaí believe they
remain a threat to the public. A Department of Justice spokesperson said the move will be targeted specifically at serious sex offenders who have left prison and will only be used in extremely rare circumstances. She said the information will only be given “to the minimum number of people necessary, to avert any risk”, confirming this will include schools and nearby neighbours, and when all other options have failed. The mooted plan is similar to Sarah’s Law and Megan’s Law in the UK and US, respectively, which allow people to find out the identity of a registered sex offender if they are living in their area.

Chinese City Introduces Smartphone Lanes
A city in northern China has introduced a special pedestrian lane on one of its roads, exclusively for slow-walking smartphone users, it has been reported. According to the Shaanxi Online News, the pavement along the Yanta Road in Xi’an has now got itself a special lane for “phubbers” - people who stare at their phones and ignore everything else around them. The lane is painted red, green and blue, and is 80cm wide and 100m long. Pictures of smartphones along the route distinguish it from an ordinary pedestrian lane. Shaanxi Online says that a large shopping mall, which looks onto the street, had been pushing to have the lane for a month. It says that cars often come onto the pavement, which is a
busy channel for pedestrians who might not be paying attention to their surroundings. News website The Paper interviewed locals, who welcomed the introduction of the lane. Wei Xiaowei said it was the first time he had seen such a thing and said he thought it was “pretty good”. “Everybody walking along here thinks that it’s very safe; at the side of the road, there are cars, and the vehicles also come onto here, and sometimes only just avoid you.” Another local, Hu Shuya, says: “Young people’s lives nowadays are fast, and they’re always looking at their phones. This puts our minds at rest those of us who are often looking at our phones - as it’s a form of protection.”
Putin questions #MeToo movement Vladimir Putin has spoken out against the #MeToo movement that has shaken powerful institutions around the world by revealing a pervasive culture of sexual harassment and assault – but so far failed to find a foothold in Russia. Echoing criticisms from the Russian establishment, Putin questioned why women were coming forward decades after the alleged attacks took place and said he believed the allegations should be addressed by the courts rather than in a media campaign. “The question comes up: why is this only being done now, why not 10 years ago when some of these incidents supposedly took place?” he told reporters shortly after a marathon four-and-a-half hour question-and-answer show called Direct Line with Vladimir Putin. “I don’t think that we should turn these questions, especially concrete cases, into some kind of cam-
Former Anglo CEO Drumm Found Guilty A jury has found former Anglo Irish Bank boss David Drumm guilty on charges of conspiracy to defraud the public and of false accounting in 2008. Shortly after 3pm on day 86 of the trial, a jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court returned the unanimous verdicts of guilty on the two charges. The jury had been deliberating for just over 10 and a half hours. Judge O’Connor thanked the nine men and three women of the jury, telling them they had performed an enormous public service. Drumm (51), who was on bail throughout the trial, sat impassively as the registrar took the verdicts from the jury forewoman and Judge O’Connor made her remarks. It was the State’s case that Drumm had conspired with Irish Life & Permanent’s former CEO Denis Casey, Anglo’s former financial director Willie McAteer and Anglo’s former head of treasury John Bowe, among others, to carry out €7.2 billion in fraudulent circular
Man Watches Latest Avengers Film In Cinema… 43 Times Think you’re a Marvel fan? Even if you are, the chances are you haven’t seen the latest movie 43 times. Superfan Tony Mitchell claims he’s been to the cinema to see Avengers: Infinity War more than anyone else. And the YouTuber from North Carolina has got the cinema tickets to prove it. “After the fifth time watching it in three days I thought: ‘I’m just going to keep coming back until it’s on Blu-ray’,” he told Radio 1 Newsbeat. Tony tries to use offers to buy tickets, “so sometimes it’s buy four get one free”. He thinks he’ll end up spending more than $1000 on tickets, but that doesn’t include the cinema snacks: “Sometimes I’m even buying food so I’m just spending a fortune.” On Twitter, Tony goes by the name Nem: The Infinity Watcher, which makes sense. He says he’s a massive Marvel fan but this is the first time he’s watched a film so many times.
paign,” Putin added. Dozens of women in other countries have come forward as part of the informal campaign to reveal sexual harassment and assault by some of the most powerful men in politics, media and film, among other industries. Harvey Weinstein, the most high-profile target of the campaign, was accused by more than 13 women of rape, assault and harassment. He was charged with rape and pleaded not guilty to a judge in New York on Tuesday.
Sitting through 43 showings of the movie is the equivalent of spending four consecutive days in the cinema. Tony calls it “time well spent”. “This latest movie really hit home for me because I’m a huge Thanos fan.” He’s not the only one. Avengers: Infinity War made history by earning an estimated $630m (£457m) worldwide on its opening weekend.
transactions in order to bolster the customer deposits figure on Anglo’s balance sheet. The State also alleged that this €7.2 billion was falsely accounted for as part of the bank’s customer deposits in preliminary accounts published on 3 December 2008, therefore misleading the market as to Anglo’s true strength. Bowe (54), McAteer (67) and Casey (58) were convicted on the conspiracy to defraud charges in June 2016 and subsequently jailed. Detective Sergeant Michael McKenna told the court he was objecting to a continuation of bail and said that Drumm would be aware that his co-conspirators received substantial prison terms for their role in the conspiracy. The maximum sentence for the conspiracy to defraud charge is unlimited. The maximum sentence for the false accounting charge is 10 years.
Campaign launched to combat dog waste in Kerry Kerry County Council has launched a month-long campaign to raise public awareness about the consequences of dog fouling. The council says that dog owners simply do not see anything wrong with their pooch pooing on the footpath. The new campaign aims to change attitudes and reduce the amount of dog foul across the county. “Dog foul is unsightly, unpleasant for those who encounter it and is a major concern for walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users,” a council spokesman said. For wheelchair users and the visually impaired it can take hours to clean up the mess after coming in contact with dog foul. It also poses a serious risk to children. Worms in dog foul leads to toxocariasis which in turn can cause blindness. Pedestrians slipping in dog foul have also suffered, they said.

Review: SNOW PATROL - WILDNESS Seven years on from the release of their sixth album, Fallen Empires, Irish group Snow Patrol return with Wildness. The four piece have rediscovered the form that made them one of the world’s biggest bands during the early 2000s British scene. In interviews leading up to the album’s release, vocalist and chief songwriter Gary Lightbody discussed his battles with writer’s block, depression and alcoholism
and it’s plain to hear in his lyrics on songs such as the sobering A Youth Written In Fire and soaring Heal Me. Album opener Life On Earth is a sweeping alternative rock number encompassing everything that’s made Snow Patrol a success. What If This Is All The Love You Ever Get? features crooning vocals over a subtle piano line, simply put, it’s the band’s best ballad since the 2006 Martha Wainwright collaboration Set The Fire To The Third Bar.

Watch ... for a taut cat-and-mouse crime drama with a special emphasis on the psychology of deviants. In the proud tradition of “Zodiac” comes this investigative thriller pitting obsessive the F.B.I. profiler Jim Fitzgerald (Sam Worthington) against the brilliant ideologue and terrorist Ted Kaczynski (Paul Bettany), a reclusive survivalist who killed three people and wounded 23 in a mailbombing campaign while evading capture for 17 years. Faced with a seemingly random pattern of victims, Fitzgerald attempts to get into the troubled mind-set of his nemesis in order to anticipate his next move — and runs the risk of getting lost in the mental woods as he goes. While the incredible story of Kaczynski’s spree isn’t short on sensational thrills, the show is never more fascinating than when it gets into the nitty-gritty of Fitzgerald’s work, from the granular linguistic analysis to the in-depth psychiatric evaluations.

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,
Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues
PURCHASING A USED VEHICLE At this time of year people often consider changing their car and often time, given the abundance of second hand cars on the market, and the depreciation of a new vehicle, many people will opt to purchase a used vehicle. There are many ways to purchase a used vehicle and we will look at some options here. Most often people will purchase from a car dealer through an established garage and in doing so, where you purchase a car for personal use from a car dealer, you as the consumer are protected by the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act, 1980. This affords many protections, not to mention the fact that the vehicle will usually come with some degree of warranty, but also in purchasing from a dealer the car must be of merchantable quality and match the description as per the advertisement and of course be fit for the purpose for which it is intended. If in the purchase of a vehicle from a dealer and these items are breached, you may have recourse for relief through the Court in default of agreement. Purchasing privately through a “small ad” can be somewhat more complicated and problematic. If you are a consumer and you buy from a private seller, who is not in the normal course of their business a car dealer, Caveat Emptor/Buyer Beware applies. In this instance, it is always wise to carry out a check on the vehicle history being purchased and there are a number of organisations who specialise in vehicle background
checks but separately it is always advisable to have a mechanic look over the entire vehicle and fully examine it in advance of you purchasing. You should also seek clarification to confirm that the person selling you the vehicle is the person who is the legal and beneficial owner of the vehicle before you contract to purchase and also confirm that there is no outstanding liabilities/finance outstanding. Purchasing at Car Auctions are becoming more popular and good deals can be obtained, however, any potential purchaser must have carried out full and comprehensive due diligence in advance of bidding for the car, because once again, Caveat Emptor applies. If you are the successful bidder you take the car as is, sight seen. You should satisfy yourself entirely in relation to any terms and conditions of the auction in advance of bidding at the auction as once you purchase the vehicle, any issues that exist with the car will be a matter entirely for the purchaser alone and very limited legal protection for the buyer pertains. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Casey & Company do not accept any responsibility for any errors or omissions herein.

This targeted body treatment will break down fatty deposits, tone muscles and reduce inches, says Jill O’Donoghue of Killarney Toning & Beauty
CACI Electro Cellulite Massager The Electro Cellulite Massager treatment gives instant lifting and contouring on the buttocks and toning of the thighs. This treatment will improve the appearance of cellulite and break down fatty deposits. It will also stimulate circulation and lymphatic drainage, which will help to flush toxins away giving a smoother and tighter, dimple-free appearance. Great as a pre-holiday body blitz. Includes Legs and Bum Lift This targeted body treatment will firm and tone the buttocks and thigh area. It will also sculpt and contour to give a firmer, more defined appearance. Underneath the dermis and epidermis are three specific layers of fat. Cellulite tends to develop in the subcutaneous fat layers. This layer of fat is unique in its structure compared to the other layers because its fatty parts are structured into specific chambers by strands of linked tissue around it. To treat cellulite it is necessary to stimulate the area in order to reduce the volume of fat that has become stored and to kick start the blood flow and circulation, which has become metabolically sluggish. Faradic electrical stimulation uses specific electrical waveforms to mobilise the connective tissue surrounding the pockets of stored fat. This stimulation triggers lipolysis whereby the fat cells naturally start to release the stored fat. Our unique Electro Cellulite Massager
Slimming World
(ECM) combines the therapeutic benefits of a massage, with the effectiveness of micro-current therapy. It has been designed to pivot to the body contours to target your specific problem areas. The stimulatory action of the ECM helps to break down fatty deposits, tone muscles and reduce inches. The unique design of the Electro Cellulite Massager utilizes twenty-four conductive rollers that are electrically charged with micro-currents. These rollers are designed to pivot to the body contours of each individual targeting specific problem areas. The stimulatory action of the Electro Cellulite Massager helps to break down fatty deposits, tone muscles and reduce inches. A course of 10-15 treatments is recommended, with 2/3 treatments per week. This can vary depending on your individual needs and expectations. A monthly maintenance treatment is also recommended. CACI Legs and Buttocks (ECM) Benefits: • Contours the buttocks • Lifts and tones the muscles • Improves appearance of cellulite • Breaks down fatty deposits • Stimulates circulation and Lymphatic drainage • Smoothes skin • Helps create a tighter, brighter complexion For more info, call Jill on 064 66 32966.

Garden Magic
Everyone Needs A Hardy Geranium
Summer is the time when perennials come into their own. It is the time for penstemon, lupin and countless other well-known flowers. However, one of the most versatile and beloved perennials has to be the hardy geranium. I think everyone should have at least one variety in their garden and if your conditions are less than wonderful, there should be many in your garden! Almost all varieties available are fully hardy and tolerate all soil types except waterlogged soil. Most do well in shade as well as a sunny spot, and are the least fussy plants I have grown. They flower in shades of white, pink, mauve, blue and purple, and provide colour from may to October. One of the earliest varieties to flower is G. phaeum, a hardy plant which has masses of purple, maroon, violet or white flowers from April onwards. They grow to about 30cm tall and are of an upright habit. G. sanguineum is the next to make an appearance in my garden. It is of a low-growing, spreading habit and is covered in pink, cup-shaped flowers all summer. The leaves are toothed and flowers range from pale pink to cerise. G. Ann Folkard is a favourite. It has a lax habit producing long shoots with golden leaves. It has an abundance of magenta flowers, with almost black centres and veins, from May ‘til frost. It covers a large area, and is ideal for keeping weeds down. Another favourite
would be Johnson’s Blue, often said to be the bluest and longest flowering of the geraniums. It has a fairly upright habit and if this is what your space needs, don’t be tempted into buying Jolly Bee, Rozanne or Heidi. Though these are all beautiful plants with blue flowers, they are all low-growing and need a lot of horizontal space! An evergreen variety is G. cantabrigiense ‘Biokovo’, a lowgrowing geranium with bright green foliage and pink flowers. G. machorrizum stays green in my garden over winter, with the added bonus of scarlet leaves in the autumn. G. renardii has soft, hairy foliage, an upright habit and white flowers with dark veins. It is quite unusual but absolutely lovely! G. cinereum is a dwarf variety which is ideal for alpine gardens, and G. x oxonianum is probably one of the oldest, most common varieties we have, ‘Wargrave Pink’ often growing in hedgerows near old cottages. One of the largest varieties is G. maderense, or the Madeira geranium, which grows to almost a metre tall when in flower. Unfortunately it is a biennial and I advise anyone who has this stunning plant to collect the seeds. I hope I have opened the world of geraniums up for exploration. There are hundreds of varieties out there, just waiting to find a place in your garden!

Three F1 Drivers On Forbes’ Top-Earning Athletes List Three megastars of Formula 1 have unsurprisingly made it to the Forbes 2018 top 100 highest-paid athletes list, and the names are equally predictable. Among the world’s top boxers, soccer, basketball and football players, Lewis Hamilton clocks in #12 on the list with estimated earnings of €43m split up between a €35m retainer from Mercedes and €9m worth of personal endorsements. At the top of the standings is Floyd Mayweather with a staggering €242m pay year, an amount the boxer earned in just 36 minutes in the ring while fighting Irishman Conor McGregor. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo complete the podium with €95m and €92m respectively.
Further down the order, ranking #18, Sebastian Vettel took in €36m courtesy of the House of Maranello. That’s actually the same amount as Hamilton, but the German is outraced by his arch-rival in terms of endorsements. His personal sponsorship deals are estimated at just €255k. The third driver included on the Forbes rich and happy 100 list is predictably Fernando Alonso, who enjoyed a €27m paycheck from McLaren and €800k in endorsements. And in case you’re wondering, to make the Forbes 100 cut it was necessary to earn €19.5m, which is the amount generated by the last man on the list, Charlotte Hornets basketball player Nicolas Batum.

Canadian Grand Prix:
Predict Your Top Three
When a man diving into a pool is the most exciting thing to happen during a grand prix weekend, then the race is unlikely to be labelled a classic. Fernando Alonso called Monaco “probably the most boring race ever” and Lewis Hamilton quipped, “I will be shocked if anyone was awake at home while it was on.” But that won’t matter to Daniel Ricciardo. He is now level on race wins with Hamil-
ton and Vettel with two so far this season. With Canada next up on the calendar, who can top the podium for a third time? History tells us there’s only one man to beat: the Montreal master Lewis Hamilton. The Mercedes man has six victories at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and will become the first driver to score four wins in a row if he takes the chequered flag at this year’s grand prix.

Meeke And Nagle Will Be Missed This weekend’s Rally Italy will be without Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle as the pair were dropped by Citroen after crashing out of Rally Portugal. The team explained that its decision was down to an “excessively high amount of crashes.” The five-time World Rally winner had been at Citroen for close to five years and worked extensively on the development of the team’s current World Rally car. Citroen will miss the axed Kris Meeke’s experience when it comes to set-up and development of its C3 World Rally car, according to Craig Breen.

Breen will be joined on Rally Italy by Mads Ostberg, and Citroen is considering keeping the duo on for the remainder of the season. “Kris had so much experience of the car and these events and the conditions,” Breen added. “Of course, it’s going to be more difficult coming to these rallies without that experience - he was a constant reference for everything”. Breen has competed on the Italian island twice before but missed any chance of a result with an oil leak on his C3 WRC 12 months ago.

It felt a bit like a Munster final in Killarney on Sunday as Kerry turned on the style in a sundrenched Fitzgerald Stadium. The weather was unreal. Fellas were baking up in the terrace. One of my friends resorted to lining up alongside some random children who were waiting for their father to squirt them with sunscreen. He got burned anyway but (wait for it - this is a good one) not as badly burned as Clare’s six backs. The visitors got the first couple of scores but Kerry were rampant thereafter, moving the ball so quickly and so efficiently that the Claremen were effectively chasing shadows for the duration. 32 points is savage kicking irrespective of who the opposition are. Stephen O’Brien must literally be told to just run his man every single time he gets the ball and Clare couldn’t cope with him the last day. There are prob-

ably more natural players in the camp but he has been consistently effective throughout his Kerry career. I have to admit that I was a small bit surprised at how quickly Micheál Burns moved up the pecking order and became a starter but he looks very comfortable inside there. He’s a serious athlete to be fair to him. Someone was telling me that he covered 14km in an A versus B match recently. To put that into context, 8-9km is considered normal. It’s very early in the summer to be getting carried away but he has done well so far. The star trio of Geaney, James and Clifford weren’t quite as electrifying as we all hoped but they still scored 13 points between them. It was great to see James bouncing around the place for Kerry again and he’ll only improve as the year goes on. Clifford did okay and again, he’ll
only get better as he continues to adapt to the senior game. Shane Murphy wasn’t tested too often but his kickouts were mostly excellent, and he’ll be pleased to have kept a clean sheet in his first championship outing as Kerry captain. It seemed like most of the supporters went home happy, although one or two (myself included) were a bit underwhelmed by the substitutions made. Mikey Geaney, BJ Keane, Darran O’Sullivan and Kieran Donaghy all got a run, but Kilcummin’s Kevin McCarthy didn’t. The game was won by half time. What’s the point of bringing on Donaghy or Darran, players who have played a million championship games, and leaving a young, exciting prospect on the bench? It was strange enough I thought. As good as Kerry were, you’d have to say that Clare, who finished third in Division 2 this year, were disappointing. Some of their basic skills were very poor and in general they looked to be miles off the standard required to challenge at this level. I noticed in the programme that their only ever championship victory over Kerry (1992) was excluded from a list of past meetings between the sides. It’s bad enough that Kerry have won 79 Munster titles to Clare’s two. If we start taking wins off them retrospectively, they’re rightly screwed.

Stroll In The Park For Kerry Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald
It was very much a stroll in the Park for Kerry at sun-splashed Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last as they recorded a 32 points to 10 win over struggling Clare in the Munster SFC semi-final. That paves the way for the traditional Munster final versus Cork in the revamped Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday June 23. Yes, the Munster final will be played on a Saturday with a 7 o’clock throw-in. The unusual Saturday staging of the game will facilitate TV coverage. Although the result of last Sunday’s game was never in doubt, it was still entertaining. Clare were first to score and in their first two attacks they registered two points in as many minutes. That was as good as it got for them as Micheál Burns scored for Kerry after three minutes. The pocket rocket was very impressive until he was called ashore after 45 minutes, making way for Mikey Geaney as Fitzmaurice began his process of giving game time to all six subs. Kerry were in command in all sectors and faith was restored in the team for its supporters. Team captain and goalkeeper Shane Murphy had little to do except kick-outs as Clare’s only chance of a goal came in the 11th minute when Gavin White made a great block down. White was impressive throughout and indeed the whole defensive sextet performed well. David Moran and Jack Barry did the business at midfield and up front Kerry were magnificent. In my match notes I recorded that all six forwards had scored by the 22nd minute. I was very impressed with the performance of Stephen O’Brien, particularly the way he wiggled his way through the Clare defenders to score three points. Veteran at age 27 was Paul Geaney and
he was superb, scoring six points from play using both legs. He also added a point from a free. Significantly, he handed over most of the free-taking to Seán O’Shea, one of the five garsúns in the team. O’Shea took it all in his stride and ended up with seven points, four from frees and a further three from play. James O’Donoghue showed no signs of rustiness after his long lay-off, returning four points with two of these from play. Youthful Fossa star David Clifford was well marked and had a quiet game by his standards just notching a single point. On other days he will be notching far more scores and that may be as early as June 23 against Cork. At half-time Kerry led by 16 points to 4 and there was no let-up in the second half when the 6 subs were used. Barry John Keane showed up best scoring three points but that won’t secure a starting spot for him in the Munster final where Kerry will surely go with the same team, barring any injuries in the meantime. Previous Kerry v Clare games I have never seen a score of 32 points by any side until Sunday last and that includes hurling games. That is averaging almost a point every two minutes. It is significant that 23 of these came from play. In 1979 Mick O’Dwyer was in charge in Milltown Malbay with his highly successful team of youngsters which won the 1975 All-Ireland. On July 1, 1979 Kerry defeated Clare 9-21 to 1-9. In 1981 at Listowel Kerry won 4-17 to 0-6 and in 1992 Clare defeated Kerry in the Munster final. In more recent times Kerry did still beat Clare in the Munster campaigns but the margins were much tighter. In 2014 Kerry won 1-17 to 1-13 and then went on to win the All-Ireland. That game was played in Ennis. In 2016 Kerry won here in Killarney 2-23 to 0-17 and last year Kerry struggled through to win 1-18 to 1-12. Optimism Kerry supporters will travel to Cork for the Mun-
ster final with much more optimism than heretofore. No doubt the fine weather and the new look Kerry team brought out the fans in great numbers. The attendance on Sunday last was 16,729. The curtain raiser was an added attraction where Kerry ladies powered their way past Waterford for a place in the Munster final versus Cork. Shane Murphy will be much busier in shot stopping but he is well up to the mark for that. The defence was the cause of much concern during the league but were on top of their game on Sunday last. I met Eoin Bomber Liston at half time and we discussed that first half display. He said he was energised by the Kerry display, particularly the forwards. He pointed out to me that the defence was not the finished article. Too many times they were in a two versus two situation in the full back line and with better forwards they could be easily caught for a goal, said the former Kerry star. He said he was impressed by the seven players who were new to championship fare. Kerry scorers: S O’Shea 0-7 (4f, 1 ‘45), P Geaney 0-7 (1f), J O’Donoghue 0-4 (2f), S O’Brien 0-3, BJ Keane 0-3 (1f), M Burns 0-2, D Clifford 0-2 (1f), A Maher, J Barry and M Geaney 0-1 each. Kerry: S Murphy; P Crowley, R Shanahan, T Morley; J Foley, P Murphy, G White; D Moran, J Barry; M Burns, S O’Shea, S O’Brien; D Clifford, P Geaney, J O’Donoghue. Subs: M Geaney for Burns (45); BJ Keane for O’Donoghue (52); B ó Beaglaoich for Shanahan, A Maher for Moran (both 57); D O’Sullivan for Clifford (59); K Donaghy for O’Shea (64) Pat Delaney RIP A minute’s silence was observed before the Kerry v Clare game on Sunday as a mark of respect to the memory of Pat Delaney RIP. He was the heart and soul of hurling here in St Pat’s East Kerry and he was a former Kerry selector at senior and at minor levels. Pat was a lovely man and we will miss him. Beannacht Dé lena hanam.

Kerry Premier A League Final
Celtic 90 Minutes Away From Perfect Season Words: Adam Moynihan Pics: Konrad Paprocki As they face into tonight’s league final against Dingle Bay Rovers, Killarney Celtic’s players know that they are just 90 minutes away from completing the perfect season. The solitary black mark was the second half collapse against Killarney Athletic where they let a three-goal lead slip to draw 3-3. Apart from that they have been utterly dominant, winning every single game and registering a whopping 75 goals in the process. Celtic were obviously very hungry for success after what
happened last year and it has really showed in their performances thus far. As I’ve said before, this league final business is a bit of a joke. Last season it actually made sense because Athletic and Celtic finished joint top with identical records. This year Celtic finished 11 points clear of second. They have been the best team in the division over the course of the past nine months, but one bad 90 minutes (or one bad half, even) and they could end up with nothing. It’s not a fair way of doing things in my opinion. Although anything can happen in one-off game, I still think Eoghan Donnellan’s side will be massive favourites and anything other than a Celtic win would be a major shock. Dingle are a good team with some great players but the 11-point gap tells its own story. The fixtures between the two during the regular season tells an even bigger one. On the opening day, Celtic went back to Gallarus and whacked Dingle 7-0. In March, they put seven past them again in Killarney. An aggregate score of 14-1 doesn’t exactly bode well for a competitive fixture in Tralee this evening. But look, you never know. Dingle have ball players like Luke Burgess, Joe Sheehy and Adam O’Rourke in midfield but they can actually be quite direct at times. That particular tactic worked well for us in our league finals against Celtic and if Dingle can get it right, Seán Fitzgerald and Paudie Quinn are more

than capable of nicking a goal or two. As for Celtic, centre half Jamie Spillane recently moved to Japan but Chris Brady is a very good replacement and they should be solid enough at the back. Gary Keane and Matt Keane will look to dictate the tempo in midfield and feed their dangerous wingers, Danny Roche and Wayne Sparling. If Celtic score early, I would fear for Dingle to be honest. Dingle’s best hope is to start well and get in at half time level. Obviously, if they could sneak a goal that would be the ideal scenario for them. If Celtic take the lead early it could kill Dingle’s confidence, especially considering how the earlier encounters have panned out. Having said that, the last time these two met in the final it was the men from the west who came out on top (4-3 in 2016). The same outcome in this particular decider is unthinkable for the Hoops; if they were to lose it would be their third consecutive league final defeat. When you take into account the excellent season that they’ve had to date, it would be cruel in the extreme if they were to fall short once again. Personally, I can’t see that happening.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy
Last week the big headlines in rugby related to Munster once again as Johan Van Graan bolstered his line up with a new fly-half. And not just any fly-half, they signed Leinster starlet Joey Carbery! Many Leinster fans took to social media to vent their frustration at Carbery’s decision to move south on a two-year contract and, given his talent, I am not surprised. This is an excellent coup for Munster as Carbery is indeed a class act and possibly Ireland’s next fly-half when Sexton hangs up his boots. This is a clever move as he will get to play week in and week out beside Conor Murray. Also, Carbery is an excellent full back and has been playing most of his rugby in that position for Leinster, so it will be interesting to see how he slots in at Munster. There was talk that Carbery could possibly move to Ulster, however Ulster would need to build
John McGrath of Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club who was a semi-finalis t at the National Gents Matchplay Championshi ps in Tullamore.
Interesting Times As Carbery Flies South around him and at Munster he will have a worldclass pack ahead of him. An interesting move for sure and if you were to believe Irish boss Joe Schmidt, it was unexpected. Schmidt stated that he did not see the move coming and had nothing to do with it but they were photographed having lunch recently. Given the power that Schmidt has and his close links to David Nucifora - Ireland’s High Performance Director - it is highly unlikely that he had no hand in the move. All in all, a great move for Carbery and for Munster. It will certainly have a knock on effect for the three players who ply their trade at number 10. Either Keatley, Hanrahan or Bleyendaal will likely move away from Munster and more than likely to Ulster. Interesting times!

Killarney Riders Dominate Road Race Round 2 Killarney Cycling Club hosted Round 2 of the Clubs of Kerry Road Race League and their riders dominated proceedings. It was a perfect evening for the races held on their regular circuit at Churchtown in Beaufort. In the senior race John Brosnan showed he had plenty left in his legs after the Rás Tailteann as he dominated this race. Once the A1 riders caught the A2 and A3 riders who were off first Brosnan went clear and was not going to be caught.
He was a clear winner and took the 10 points on offer in the 6-round Road Race League. Conor Kissane, also of Killarney CC, followed up his win in the first round with a second place here as he bids to defend his title. Tralee Manor West riders David Fitzgerald and Kieran Coggins took 3rd and 5th with Kilarney’s Leigh Hewerdine crossing the line in 4th. In the underage races Callum Steadman, Killarney CC, took the U-12’s win from unattached rider Nu-
ala Moloney with the three Killarney CC riders filling the rest of the top five places – Danny Falvey, Tadgh Kissane O’Sullivan and Shayna Daly. Killarney riders took the top three places in the U-14 race with Shane Galvin home first ahead of Adam Lenihan and Louis Steadman. Shauna Finn from Newcastlewest CC was 4th and Dinny Murphy Sliabh Luachra in 5th. And in the U-16’s race Patrick Galvin could not be caught as he took the win from Stefan Caulfield Drier and their fellow Killarney CC club mates Ethan Slattery in 3rd and Lorcan Daly in 4th. Ben Murphy from Sliabh Luachra was 5th across the line. This Thursday it’s Round 2 of the Time Trial League where Round 1 winner Paul Kennedy, Newcastlewest CC, will be looking to better his blistering 26.14.6.

of the double to cap their best season ever. Although underdogs, they took the game to Camp and went ahead on 10mins as Ian O’Connor fired home from close range following a long ball into the box from Shane Warren. Camp drew level 10mins before the break with the aid of a cruel deflection but Geeha responded within a minute when Darragh O’Riordan bundled home following good work by Cathal Ryan. In the 2nd half Cian Dineen went close from 20 yards before Camp drew level again and began to take control. Geeha didn’t panic and defended well with Daniel Herlihy outstanding at the back. Then in true cup final drama as the game neared full time Sean Kennedy played in Philip O’Leary who rounded his man and swept home the winner to send the travelling support wild. A truly magnificent result to cap a dream season for the lads and management team. Well done to all. RESULT: Junior League, Killarney Legion 0-11 Glenflesk 1-7. In a closefought encounter in Derreen, the Legion had the better of matters in the first half and went in at the break leading 6pts to 3. Glenflesk upped their game in the second half and hit an unanswered 1-1 in the early stages but this brought a good response from the Legion who replied with a series of points from Finbarr Murphy and young Mike Devlin to steady the ship. Adam Moynihan in goal had a sound game and indeed Darren Looney and Damien Lyne in the halfback line were solid throughout. KERRY UP AND RUNNING: Not a huge or difficult challenge for Kerry against Clare but great to see James back and injury free after such a run of bad luck.
