Residents call on Council to reopen right of way Killarney locals this week called on the Council to reopen a right of way near their homes after it was temporarily closed – over eight years ago. | By Michelle Crean

Killarney’s stately house hotel to reopen today Killarney’s Cahernane House Hotel, described as Ireland’s ‘Downton Abbey’, which has undergone €6.5 million worth of renovations in a bid to return the luxury mansion house to its former glory, to set to reopen today (Friday). | By Michelle Crean The property has been closed since December in order to allow a further €1.3 million renewal programme to be carried out over the winter months bringing the total renovation figure to €7.8 million. The 48-bedroom hotel, situated on 6.4 acres of verdant grounds and on the edge of the Killarney Lakes and Killarney National Park, was recently accepted into Ireland’s Blue Book and the prestigious Condé Nast Johannsen’s Traveler Guide. The hotel also won an International Gold Award of Excellence for the best 4-star hotel in Ireland from CIE Tours International in January. The stately property was built in 1877 by Henry Herbert and his wife Catherine and was purchased by PREM Group in 2016. The €1.3m works include renovations to the former ‘Coach House’ converting the outside property into eight new luxurious bedrooms. The elegant Drawing Room, overlooking Killarney National Park, The Library and The Atrium are all being completely
reimagined. Julie Goggin has been commissioned with the interior design while architects, Moloney O’Beirne have created the design on The Coach House. Work on The Library and The Atrium has been completed in time for today’s reopening while the work on The Coach House is expected to be completed by May, explained Emer Corridan, General Manager of Cahernane House Hotel. “We have had a busy winter getting all the works completed on time for our reopening and are really delighted with progress to date,” Emer Corridan said. “We all feel very connected to the building, it is part of the heritage and history of Killarney and Kerry and once the latest works are completed it will be one of Ireland’s finest hotels.” Many of the original pieces from the house remain in Cahernane House Hotel today, including the wooden staircase, the Killarney Davenport table in the lobby and the pillar caps in the lobby, which feature the first letters of each of Henry’s first four children’s names.
Residents from Muckross View voiced their annoyance during Wednesday morning’s Killarney Municipal District meeting – saying that they have waited long enough for the walkway to be reopened. Closure of the walkway means that residents of 25 homes in the area have no option but to walk an extra quarter of a mile to access their local shops after the Council temporarily closed the right of way due to fears of structural damage to a nearby wall. The annoyed locals say waiting over eight years to have the walkway reopened is not acceptable and something has to be done now. Resident Paddy Keane, who was part of a delegation brought to the Council meeting in Killarney Town Hall by Cllr John Sheahan, spoke at the meeting saying they were told at the time that it was temporarily closed due to “a safety issue” as part of the wall was structurally unsound. He said since its closure locals have had to take an alternative route down Countess Grove onto Countess Road and onto Muckross Road to go to Centra Applegreen, as well as the Dromhall and Randles Court Hotels. “What should be about 200 yards is now a quarter of a mile,” Paddy told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “The reason we’re doing this now is there’s a housing development nearby in
what is the remnants of Muckross View. The section the Council closed we want it reopened.” During the meeting Killarney Municipal District Engineer John Ahern said that the Council needs to view the files to establish the ownership of the land and the right of way. “This particular issue is a historic matter and I’d say a complex matter for various reasons,” Mr Ahern said. “I need to establish the clear facts behind the whole scenario. Killarney Town Council took those actions because of the fear of the structure of this particular wall. Before we can move forward and physically do something on the ground we have to establish the facts. At the moment I have requested all the older files to establish the facts and it’s going to take a number of weeks to sort that out. If it is established that we are in a position to move forward we’d have to organise a structural report and bring in a structural solution to make that particular area safe to reopen it and establish a cost as to what is involved.” Councillors in attendance agreed that the right of way should be reopened. “It isn’t today or yesterday we’re highlighting this case,” Cllr Donal O’Grady said. “I’ve had three motions to have it reinstated. I’m calling now on our engineer to re-instate the wall and I will certainly give an allocation to that. It means the world to the people living in Muckross View.”

Irexit Freedom announces new Killarney candidate Mairead Donovan confirmed yesterday (Thursday) that she is to run as a candidate for the Killarney area in the upcoming local elections.
Man found not guilty of dangerous driving causing death of cyclist A 34-year-old man has been found not guilty of dangerous driving causing the death of a cyclist who had been on a Sunday outing with the Killarney Cycling Club. The jury of 11 deliberated for a total of two hours and 31 minutes before reaching their unanimous verdict at the Circuit Criminal Court in Tralee on Friday last. Sean O’Mahony, now aged 34, of Ballybeggan, Tralee, had denied the charge of dangerous driving causing the death of 36 year-old Edward Duggan of Firies, Killarney, on November 15, 2015, at Scart, Farranfore. During their deliberations at the end of the trial, which began on Tuesday February 26, the jury had asked to again view dash cam evidence taken by a passing motorist which captured Mr Duggan among a group of four cyclists, going single file up Knockaderry Hill – around 10 minutes before the collision occurred. Mr Duggan, they heard, was at the rear of the group and dressed in black. 6km from the group, the green car driven by Mr O'Mahony, was heading towards Farranfore, going at moderate speed. The jury could bring in three verdicts: guilty of dangerous driving causing death, guilty of the lesser careless driving causing death, or not guilty, Judge Thomas E O’Donnell told them. The Killarney cyclists had set out at 9am from the Lidl car park in Killarney,
and had gone via Fossa to Milltown, Castlemaine, Tralee, Castleisland and Farranfore, and were returning to Killarney via the N22, the trial was told. It was an exceptionally dark, wet morning with gusts of wind. Around the time of this fatal accident there had been a glare when the sun suddenly came out. The 36-year-old deceased had been “going well” and was in the lead group as they came towards the end of their 90km Sunday run at around 11.15am. There was a tradition in the Killarney club of waiting for colleagues who had fallen behind. The leaders stopped after the crest of Knockaderry Hill, after Farranfore at Scart Cross on the N22, before setting out again. However, within seconds of setting off again, there was a loud bang as the car collided with the back wheel of Mr Duggan’s bike. Excessive speed, alcohol or being on a phone were not factors, and the accused, Mr O’Mahony, was of impeccable character, the jury had been told. Both car and bike were in good condition. Mr O’Mahony told gardai he was “blinded” by the sun suddenly coming out on the dark morning at the time of the collision and he did not see the cyclist. “I did not see the cyclist,” Mr O’Mahony
said in his statement four days after the fatal incident. John O’Sullivan, barrister for the defence pointed to the evidence of a number of witnesses about “the exceptional blackness” of the morning and the sun suddenly coming out and the glare from the road. There was also a peculiar configuration of the road at the spot. “A host of things” had come together to result in the terrible tragedy - but this was not dangerous driving, he said. Mr O’Sullivan also referred to the evidence of Garda O’Brien - that he had formed the opinion there was “a sense of urgency” on the part of the cyclists to get back out on the road again. A light on the cyclist’s saddle had not been switched on, and he was not wearing high visibility clothing, the jury also heard. Tom Rice, prosecutor, in his closing speech said the prosecution accepted the accused did not see the bicycle. “But the question is should he have seen it? That’s really what this trial is about,” he said. The sun is going to come out and blind people, the road is going to be wet - but this is not an excuse for not seeing a cyclist, Mr Rice had said.
Mairead (72) is a retired nurse and grandmother originally from Kilkenny and will run for the Irexit Freedom Party. She intends to fight the election on a platform of opposing Government shutdowns of rural post offices, providing more money for carers, and fighting cuts against Killarney Ambulance Services. She is also strongly opposed to wasteful EU policies which have led to the demise of the local fishing industry and the loss of Irish sovereignty. “Following on from Irexit Freedom’s successful conference held in Ballygarry House, Tralee on Friday last, we believe we are strongly posed to win a seat in Kerry County Council and be the voice of the disaffected people of Kerry who are fed up with the avarice of the Irish political class and its EU masters,” she said. “Consumerism has taken over and our culture and identity has fragmented our communities.” Mairead has strong environmental concerns with the rapid growth in the population and the proposed extra one million population increase the Irish government are now pushing for.
Mairead Donovan plans to run for the Irexit Freedom Party for the Killarney area.

€23,000 Winning Streak win for Killarney lady AWARDS: Teresa O'Shea, Bridget McCarthy, Helena Dennehy, Dr. Stephen Cotter, Michelle Gleeson, Elaine Murphy and Brid Kennedy from Cotter Orthodontics celebrating at the Irish Dentistry Awards.
Smiles all around as Cotter’s win four national dental awards
A bingo-loving Killarney woman won €23,000 when she appeared on the Winning Streak TV game show on RTÉ One on Saturday night. Patricia Foley had a host of family and friends cheering her on the Winning Streak studio, including her son Jeremy. The winning ticket was bought from O’Connor Killarney Ltd., Beech Road, Killarney.
Patricia plays bingo every week in Killorglin and she enjoyed the good wishes of all her bingo pals ahead of the TV appearance! The Kerry woman was out and about two Saturdays ago when she got a call from a friend to say her name was drawn to appear on Winning Streak. She was shocked at the news and her phone didn’t stop ringing! She plans to use her winnings to do home renovations.
It was a big night for Cotter Orthodontics as they scooped four national awards at the Irish Dentistry Awards. The local business based in Park Road won ‘Practice of the Year - Leinster and Munster’, ‘Best Employer’, ‘Most Improved Practice’ and ‘Best Referral Practice’, in the Round Room at Dublin's Mansion House on Friday night. Having opened his practice in Killarney in 2009, Stephen moved to a purpose built clinic in autumn 2017, where he now has a staff of four. This year was the first time that Cotter Orthodontics entered the Irish Dentistry Awards. The judging panel is made up of dental leaders and industry professionals, who look for high-quality submissions and exceptional clinical evidence. Each award highlights a different area of expertise, and allows the team to demonstrate their skills and achievements.
Cotter’s were finalists in five categories to have won four is unbelievable, Stephen Cotter explained this week. “The Irish Dentistry Awards is Ireland's most prestigious dental awards ceremony,” he said. “It was a fantastic night hosted by FMC Professional, an event held each year to celebrate excellence in dentistry and the hard work, dedication and talent of dental professionals across Ireland. To have won the prestigious ‘Practice of the Year’ category is a great achievement.” Dr Cotter and his team would like to thank everyone for their support over the past 10 years. "Without you we would not be able to do what we do!"

Election candidate wants poster free campaign | By Michelle Crean It’s his first time running in the local elections – but Neily O'Connor wants to keep the campaign poster free - and is calling on fellow candidates to follow his lead. Neily, from Ballagh, Killarney, who is running in the Killarney Electoral Area, says posters are unsightly, can pose a traffic hazard in some places, and are a waste of money. He is now calling on his fellow candi-
dates to do the same for the May 24 election and is asking them to instead make a donation to a local charity of their choice. “For this initiative to be successful it will require all candidates to agree, simply because if one decided against it, it leaves us with little or no option but to do same,” Neily told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “Killarney town is already a poster free zone and I want this to be extended to the hinterland and surrounding areas. Posters are expensive and in reality a
waste of money. There are plenty of ways we can communicate with the electorate such as social media or even the sharing of billboards across the constituency.” Neily said that he has already spoken to some of the candidates who are in agreement with this policy and is now asking all other candidates to come on board. Director of elections, solicitor Dan O’Connor, is available anytime should candidates wish to contact him regarding this, Neily added.

Traffic concerns continue outside Fossa National School "It’s absolute mayhem"- says Principal Safety concerns for almost 300 pupils and staff at one Killarney school continue to linger on as they once again called on the Council to urgently make their school safer. A deputation representing Fossa National School, which included Principal Pat Clifford, concerned parent Declan Lynch who has four children attending the school, and Catherine McCarthy Chair of the Parent's Association, as well as local man Tim Clifford, were brought to the Killarney Municipal Meeting in the Town Hall by Cllr Maura Healy-Rae, on Wednesday morning. They said that children and their parents are regularly taking their lives in their
hands at drop off and pick up times as they negotiate crossing the busy N72 Killarney to Killorglin road to get to Fossa National School. They called for the immediate installation a controlled pedestrian crossing with raised footpaths from the school to the Prince of Peace Church, as parish priest Canon Tom Looney has given his blessing for the 56 car parking spaces in the church grounds to be used. They also asked for the crossing to be

manned by a school traffic warden during school drop off and pick up times. “I see practically every day near misses,” Principal Pat Clifford told the meeting. “I think it’s an absolute injustice to every parent. Over 100 parents are coming at the same time – it’s absolute mayhem.” Cllr Healy-Rae said that she has raised this very serious issue on a number of occasions. “It’s an ongoing saga unfortunately,” she told the meeting. “It’s posing a very serious safety risk. There’s thousands and thousands of cars passing every day. It’s putting children’s lives at risk.”
8.03.2019 Killarney Municipal District Engineer John Ahern said that the Council will work with them to come up with a solution. He welcomed the fact that the school brought their own consultants on board to look at the structures inside and outside the school. “We all have to work together to improve the situation,” he said. However, Mr Lynch became seemingly frustrated with the debate saying he has spoken to a number of Council engineers and an official from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) - but nothing has been done since. “We’re getting nowhere,” he said. “I’ve taken time off work to come in here and listen to this rubbish. My four children will have left Fossa by the time anything is done. I’m am quite angry, it’s just not acceptable.” He said a simple solution is to go up to Mackey Shea’s and buy 100 traffic cones which could be used the following morning.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Is Kerry becoming a playground for city dwellers? The Irish Hotels Federation is beginning to be vocal about the rural/Dublin divide when it comes to the tourism sector. As with all else in this country, laws are made for Dublin and then everyplace else has to fit in. The IHF represents the big hoteliers and the owners, mostly. They are concerned about Section 23s and tax breaks and stuff like that for the accommodation sectors. But there needs to be some tourism think-tank which will take a hollistic view of tourism and where it is going. Hotels are important social centres too. As evidenced last week by the dismay in south Kerry after a bizarre decision by An Bord Pleanala. I give the Council much stick in this column and elsewhere over planning, but they were correct in their grant of planning for 48-bedroom hotel in what is now just a bar, Cable O’Leary’s in Ballinskelligs. That it was second home owners who appealed the Council decision is causing bad blood in south Kerry where there are hundreds of second homes by city dwellers from Cork and Dublin and larger towns. At the same time there is hardly anybody living there who is between the ages of 18 and 50. “The anger is pure and palpable,” one
local man told me. To rub salt into the wounds, this is the second time an investment of say €30 million has been scuppered by the owner or owners of a holiday home in the Ballinskelligs area. The same happened in 2005. A once great hotel is now a ruin in Reenroe. It’s fine for the hoteliers in Killarney and elsewhere to build four storeys and three storeys - but it is not fine in Ballinskelligs, seems to be the thinking. There is a kind of double-think going on here somewhere. And someone from the industry needs to speak up for south Kerry. A representative of Coiste Forbartha na Sceilge, the local development body crystallised what I believe to be a growing feeling in Kerry and elsewhere that the whole place is being sterilised as a playground park for city dwellers. And on this note, I would like to ask is it time for a rethink, or at least a more ginger approach to what is known as “adventure tourism”? A 200-strong task force has been dis-
patched to remove debris from Mount Everest. This is after the local Sherpas brought down nine tonnes of waste. UNESCO has warned that the dramatic growth in adventure tourism is endangering the world’s highest mountain. In the past eight years more than 40,000 people have tried to climb it. I am not bowled over by the fad for “adventure tourism” that sees hundreds of muddy boots at any one time take over the reflective quiet and peace of Killarney, including its most protected areas. There is no question but such hordes of people intent on testing themselves against nature is damaging the environment, not to mention the tranquility. Mangerton Mountain was once a pristine green space. We have pictures somewhere of the uniform green that welcomed the odd walker from around 1987. An tAthair Peadar Ui Laoghaire, the great Irish scholar, was one who climbed Mangerton, most people of a certain vintage will remember. And, because it is so much Killarney’s mountain, it was a popular tourist spot, part of the romantic vision of tourism of Victorian times that this town’s industry is built upon. However, like much of
Our society is losing its spirit Cicero was arguably one of the greatest orators and thinkers who ever lived. But when the Roman Republic was on the wane and it could no longer tolerate straight talking, however eloquent, Cicero was beheaded. These days the beheading of Cicero the press - is not done with swords but with money, economic power and a thousand cuts. As a society, we are less open to debate. We are less open to being challenged. We are also narcissistic - in love with our own images. And we are more and more inclined to undermine the press
and plain speaking. There is the threat of legal action at every turn. Ireland is falling over with solicitors and barristers right now, we have more than most countries. Maybe we should ask ourselves why. I would argue that a society that is becoming more and more legalistic is a philistine society - it is losing its spirit. A society full of lawyers is a society replete with distrust. But the plain decent people of Ireland are fighting back it would seem. In a spectacular and most heartening decision this week a jury handed a David and Goliath victory to a couple of brave and no doubt badly paid journalists in
the Sunday Business Post against one of the richest and most powerful and most litigious men in this state. There was only a skeletal defence team led by Michael McDowell by the Post up against two senior counsels, two juniors and an army of solicitors. O’Brien is notorious in journalistic circles for suing, despite, or may be because of being a media owner. In a second case before the Supreme Court, again with the genesis of muzzling the media, this time RTE, O’Brien lost too. It is entirely ironic that the subject of O’Brien’s second legal action this week were remarks in the Dáil by two TDs,
the park, very frequently now Saturday and Sunday it is host not just to walkers but “adventure tourists”. Sometimes hundreds arrive in frequently all too fast with cars speeding up the road and parking where they like. Sometimes the huge groups of runners and walkers arrive during the deer rut season and the stags and hinds are scattered. They go back home afterwards muddy and cold and, hopefully, satisfied speeding down the road. It only costs them the petrol. Meanwhile, the mountain is practically falling down. A chasm like a waddi has been created. There are no toilets and frequently the road is barely passable because of thoughtless parking. Litter is left. In Dublin right now walking tour groups of more than 25 are being banned because there is no room on the footpath. On Carrauntoohil there has been an outcry over human waste, dogs and large numbers arriving all together. It may be high time we took on a more robust approach to over marketing and over-adventureising our delicate nature. As with Ballinskelligs, a few questions need to be asked. among whom was a Sinn Fein TD. Because while O’Brien is notorious, Sinn Fein are notorious too in journalistic circles about their attitude to the press - or as they call it “the established” media. Even if you are not sued or dragged before a tribunal, you can expect to be mauled in social media by their keyboard warriors if you say a word against them or theirs or question them. It is street fighting on a social scale. I hear though they are quietening. Is backfired the word? The “established media” has not died and they need friends to get their very laundered message across. But the media are wary… Most journalists these days are not in it for ambition and certainly not for money. It’s a precarious industry and one in which one’s head, increasingly, is on every line.

New guidelines for Air B&B owners
Cllr Maura Healy-Rae has asked both Kerry County Council and the Department to provide a full clarification and guidelines on the new regulations for Air B&B providers. Many people have asked whether any new guidelines would have planning implications. Kerry County Council responded by saying as of yet the guidelines haven't been published and "as soon as they are available we will circulate same to members and publish on the council's website". “I appreciated that new guidelines aren't yet published, but outlined how the department needs to be clearer on this as the Minister has made comments that providers would have to apply for a change of use and how this is leaving people in fear as they are taking bookings for the upcoming summer and are afraid that they will be penalised in some way,” she said. ..............................................................

Students take on new Park and Stride initiative A new Park and Stride initiative ‘5 Days 5 New Ways’ to encourage alternative means of travelling to school was launched in Killarney this week. | By Michelle Crean The initiative began at 8.30am on Monday morning in St Brigid's Secondary School, as students were dropped to Tesco car park in town and walked to school from there. Carpooling was the mode of transport on Tuesday, cycling on Wednesday. On Thursday, students assembled in the Lidl carpark and were escorted to school, and Friday everyone was encouraged to use the bus service. It is all part of the Green Schools Initiative, with the main aim of the campaign to reduce congestion outside the school entrance, focus on the health and well-being of the students to encourage them to
walk and cycle to school. The school also hopes to promote the very topical issue of climate change by reducing carbon emissions, Sheree Murphy, Green Schools Coordinator of St Brigid’s explained. "The support from various organisations such as Killarney Gardaí, Killarney Tidy Towns Committee and Mayor of Killarney John Sheahan has been phenomenal,” she said. “I think everyone would like to see the public, and in particular students getting more active in the morning, as it is not only beneficial to our health but also to the environment and Killarney town itself." She added a particular thank you to the
Aldi plans 20 jobs in new Cahersiveen store Aldi has this week confirmed its plans to open a new store in Cahersiveen town – creating up to 20 new jobs in the area. Aldi, who submitted a planning application for the new store on Friday, February 1, plans to have the new 140sqm ‘Project Fresh’ store opened by 2020 after reaching an agreement with Brian McCarthy to purchase a site at Abbey Place, as part of its €160m Irish store network investment programme.
The move will mean an estimated 20 new jobs will be created at the store, 72 free car parking spaces will be provided for customers, and it will be powered by 100 percent green electricity. The development will see a substantial investment into the local area as well as the creation of new permanent jobs once the store opens, along with many more during the construction phase, according to Niall O’Connor, Managing Director Aldi Mitchelstown Region. “This is great news for shoppers and for
Tidy Towns committee who sponsored a €30 voucher per day for any student who got involved in the ‘5 Days 5 New Ways’ initiative. The student’s names were entered into a raffle for a voucher. And Colm Copper, representing AIB, sponsored a voucher for students who got involved in two or more mornings. Kerry footballer and All-Star winner, Sarah Houlihan was also on hand during Thursday’s event in order to encourage more walking to school, she added. “Thank you to Garda Jamie Lenihan who organised a Garda presence on each of the days. The Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District Councillor John Sheahan commended the teachers and the students for their initiative in trying to drive a change in behaviour around transport. The development of safe, accessible walking and cycling routes in Killarney is of vital importance to the long term development of the town.” employment in the town,” he said. “Every new Aldi store brings greater choice, quality and value to more and more consumers across Ireland. We already have seven stores across Kerry that are hugely popular and very much part of their local community. We’re now really excited about coming to Cahersiveen.” Aldi’s Kerry stores participate in Aldi’s national partnership with FoodCloud, donating surplus food to local charities daily. The stores have donated over 68,000 meals to charity to date. Each store is also part of Aldi’s Community Grants network, with Adapt Kerry, Castleisland Old Folks Home, Enable Ireland Kerry, Kerry Cancer Support Group and Saint John of God Kerry Services amongst the local charities availing of the €500 bursary grant in recent times.

Transition Year students receive certs in mental health training Jigsaw Kerry was proud to present Kerry’s first 35 Peer Educators with their graduation certificates at a recognition event held in the Muckross Park Hotel in Killarney, on Thursday evening last. MC for the night was Donagh Hennebry from Jigsaw Kerry, who spoke passionately about the importance of providing young people an opportunity to discuss their emotions, express how they are feeling and the importance of each young person having one good adult in their lives to listen. He thanked the young people for their commitment to the programme and the school’s teachers, principals and staff for their unwavering support.
Jigsaw Kerry provides a free, brief, goal-focused therapeutic intervention lasting up to eight sessions for young people between the ages of 12-25. “The Peer Education Schools Programme involved 35 volunteer Transition Year students from three Killarney schools; St Brendan’s, Presentation and Killarney Community College, as well as three Castleisland Post Primary Schools; St Patricks, Presentation and Castleisland Community College,” Frank O'Rahilly from
Jigsaw Kerry said. “These schools and students came together with Jigsaw Kerry to train in the co-delivery of a Youth Mental Health Workshop to their peers. It is well established that during adolescence, peers play a large part in a young person's life and that young people are more likely to listen to mental health messages when they come from other young people.” He explained that over the course of 18 hours of training, delivered by Donagh Hennebry the Youth and Community Engagement Worker, these young people were supported to develop a range of skills including public speaking and presentation skills, setting and maintaining
boundaries, active listening and encouraging their peers to seek help if they are feeling down, worried or stressed. “Students also learned a range of key messages about promoting youth mental health.” Karen O’Donoghue, a peer educator, spoke on the night about how much she enjoyed the whole experience and the lasting image for her was the description of mental health being on a scale, that can fluctuate between positive and negative and ‘that we all have mental health’. A highlight of the event was when the 150 audience were treated to the Presentation Castleisland’s 30 strong student choir led by their director Ailish O’Connor. If you are concerned about a young person or would like to find out more about Jigsaw’s work in the community you can contact them directly on 0667186785 or find out more on www.jigsaw.ie.
Students tour Liebherr during Engineers Week Liebherr Container Cranes showcased advanced research and development to young students during Engineers Week this week. The Killarney based company, one of Ireland’s leading engineering firms with a global presence, took part from March 2 to today (Friday). Engineers Week helps primary and post-primary students, their teachers and parents explore the exciting world of engineering as well as highlighting the diverse career opportunities engineering offers. In addition to touring the facility, the students got to see an advanced container-handling crane as it was being prepared to undergo extensive research and development into autonomous driving, remote control, and alternative energy
sources to supply power to the machine. Engineers Week represents a fantastic opportunity for students to meet and chat with the engineers responsible for developing this technology, which will be deployed in ports and terminals around the world. As they toured the factory, they saw highly skilled staff using state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques to build and assemble cranes, and witness a wide variety of engineering disciplines and trades at work to make a world-class product. “We look forward to Engineers Week every year, where the engineers of tomorrow get to meet the engineers of today,” Charlie McCarthy, Managing Director – Engineering at Liebherr Container Cranes said. “Visiting students learned how advanced structural, mechanical, electrical and

CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT – RECENT AMENDMENTS The Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2018, has recently come into operation. This Act has made some significant amendments to the area of employment legislation. Prior to the introduction of this legislation, there was an obligation on an employer to provide to an employee a written Contract setting out Terms and Conditions of Employment. The 2018 Act has significantly increased the obligation on the Employer in this respect. The new Act states that an Employer shall not later than five days after the commencement of an Employees employment with the Employer give or cause to be given to the Employee a Statement in writing containing particulars of the terms of the Employees employment including the full names of the Employer and the Employee, the address of the Employer in the State. In the case of a Temporary Contract of Employment the expected duration thereof or if the Contract of Employment is for a fixed term, the date on which the Contract expires, the rate or method of calculation of the Employees renumeration and the pay reference period for the purpose of the National Minimal Wage Act 2000. The number of hours which the Employer reasonably expects the Employee to work per normal working day and per normal working week. The Act contains the provision to allow for error or omission that is made by clerical error. The Act, requires the Statement to be given
to an Employee notwithstanding the Employee’s employment ends before the period within which the Statement is required to be given. The Act now provides that failure to carry out the above is an offence if the Statement is not furnished within one month of the date of commencement of Employment. In the event that the offences committed by a body corporate or Limited Liability Company and is proved to have been so committed with the consent or connivance of any person including a Director, Manager or Secretary or other Officer of the body corporate, that person as well as the company shall be guilty of the offence and shall be liable to be proceeded against as well as the company. Summary proceedings for an offence under this Section may be bought and prosecuted by the Workplace Relations Commission. Such proceedings may be instituted within twelve months of the date of the alleged offence. It shall be a defence under the Section to show that a person or company exercised due diligence and took reasonable precautions to ensure that the Act was complied with.
New upgrade means accessibility for all The new facilities at Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre’s gym, which includes new flooring and equipment, was officially opened at the weekend. | By Michelle Crean Minister of State for Transport, Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin TD was on hand to do the honours at the new Strength and Conditioning Area on Saturday morning. The upgrade will provide much needed opportunities for individuals who may need rehabilitation, along with providing modern equipment for people to continue with their own personal journey to physical and mental well-being. The open plan layout also allows for accessibility for all. To celebrate the opening, the centre held free taster class sessions on the new equipment all weekend. Minister Griffin, who provided funding under the Sports Capital Grant, acknowledged the important part played by sport in promoting health and wellbeing.
“It is great to see the facility so busy with groups such as the Kerry Ladies football team and badminton teams using the facility. There is huge social and community benefit to facilities such as these.” Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr John Sheahan added that the new facilities will help clubs and organisations to develop and grow. “When looking at a facility like this we need to remember not alone is it a facility that has a pool and a gym but it is a facility used by swim clubs, basketball clubs, badminton clubs and by having top class facilities it enables these clubs and organisations to develop and grow.” Councillor Donal Grady, who is Director of the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre, acknowledged the support of the Minister along with Kerry County Council in providing matching grant funding.

Fáilte Ireland urges tourism sector to step up Brexit preparations Fáilte Ireland’s CEO Paul Kelly addressed the Irish Hotel Federation’s Annual Conference in the Gleneagle Hotel & INEC Killarney on Tuesday, and used the opportunity to appeal to hotels and other tourism businesses to step up their efforts to diversify into newer markets ahead of Brexit. Fáilte Ireland is investing €5 million this year for business supports to ensure the Irish tourism sector is both ‘product-ready’ and ‘industry-ready’ ahead of the UK withdrawal from the EU. “While it is still difficult to quantify the range and scope of impacts that Brexit
will have, our key message to tourism businesses is ‘prepare and diversify’, Paul Kelly, Chief Executive of Fáilte Ireland said. “Any tourism business which does not have Brexit contingencies as a central focus of its 2019 business plan needs to act fast.” Michael Lennon, President of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) added the hotel sector must be prepared for any and all contingencies. “Businesses need to assess the risks associated with reliance on the UK market, respond to changes quickly and look at marketing themselves to newer markets or indeed other sectors within existing markets.”
Youth Day has now grown to become one of the largest annual youth events in Ireland as a day to celebrate, innovate and illustrate what it means to be young in Kerry today. KDYS has an exciting vision for all young people in Kerry, where all young people can realise their potential, learn the skills needed for their lives today, and to ensure a healthy and successful future. KDYS provides state of the art youth spaces where all young people can create and access a huge variety of exciting programmes in these dedicated youth facilities. These important centres help to equip young people with life changing skills through opportunities which help them to grow, learn and develop - building futures for all young people, explained Tim O’Donoghue, CEO. “Youth Day is our flagship event,” he said. “It also allows us a chance to reaffirm our commitment to supporting all young people no matter what. Despite all the challenges facing young people today, KDYS is committed to building futures for all young people and the communities where they
live. In fact, we have ambitious plans to build on and expand the range of spaces, skills and opportunities we provide to young people.” A small selection of what is on offer throughout Youth Day 2019 includes surf simulator, dance, jousting, master classes, virtual reality demos, fitness challenges including spinning, rowing and push ups, hair and beauty, board games, special guests, and of course the ‘Mega Disco’. Youth Day highlights how the KDYS has been building futures for young people in Kerry since 1971, through a mixture of youth clubs and specialist programmes. Gathering Festival another huge success The 20th Gathering Traditional Festival, one of the most loved festivals amongst traditional enthusiasts, was another huge success in Killarney at the weekend. There was a feast of entertainment for all ages including sell out concerts, céilís, sessions, workshops and storytelling as well as set dancing, singing and instrument masterclasses in the INEC from February 27 to March 3. This year’s five-day festival attracted trad fans from the US, Britain, France, Germany and all over Ireland and was one of the most richly diverse programmes in years featuring everything from Altan, Mike McGoldrick, John Doyle and John McCusker, Dordán, Paddy Keenan, Frankie Gavin and Dermot
Byrne and a whole lot more. “We had a hugely successful 20th Gathering Traditional Festival with sell out concerts, céilís and workshops,” Ceara Scanlon, PR and Marketing Manager with the INEC Killarney, said. “We were delighted to be able to bring our schools outreach to local schools including Gaelscoil Faithleann, St Oliver’s and Presentation Monastery with support from Killarney Credit Union and Kerry County Council. We look forward to turning 21 in 2020!”

This week marks the start of Ireland’s largest fundraising campaign, the Trocaire Lenten Appeal, which will see more than 1 million Trocaire boxes reach households and schools across the country. It began on Ash Wednesday this week and will run until Easter Sunday, April 21. Martina explained that by taking part it will help more than two million of the poorest and most vulnerable people across the world over the coming year. Trocaire’s 2019 Lenten Appeal highlights how the loss of land in the developing world is leading to devastating consequences for millions of families, she explained. “Land is such an important factor in combating poverty,” she said. “It allows people to grow food to feed their families and to make a living, and it offers much-needed safety and stability for children. Sadly though, for many reasons, land and homes are being taken from millions of families across the developing world and means they are facing hunger, the threat of violence as well as a lack of access to education and

basic medical care as they struggle to survive.” This year, the Lent box tells this story through three young girls. Maria is from Guatemala where vulnerable communities are being violently evicted by large businesses and left with nothing. In Uganda, Patricia has lost her home because her father died. Her mother, like many others, lacks any basic rights to her land simply because she is a woman. While Maya, who now lives in a refugee camp in Lebanon, was forced to flee her home with her family to escape the Syrian war. “Trocaire is working in over 20 countries across the developing world and supports thousands of families like those of Maria, Maya and Patricia by providing food, shelter and medical care as well as fighting for justice and land rights,” Martina said. “This would not be possible without the support of the public. We are incredibly grateful for the generous donations we receive from parishes, schools and families from Kerry each year and I would appeal to people across the county to support this vital campaign. This can be done by collecting your loose change in a Trocaire box, making a donation online or over the phone, or organising fundraising activities throughout Lent. Shelley’s shocked after surprise 80th party It was a night filled with love in abundance as family, friends and neighbours gathered to celebrate the 80th birthday of one local lady. It was a big night on Saturday for Pacella O’Donoghue Lehane, known affectionately to all as Shelley. Her nearest and dearest came together in the Killarney Avenue Hotel and danced the night away as they helped celebrate the big milestone birthday – which Shelley from Dromtarriff was only made aware of hours earlier. However, that didn’t deter Shelley
from having a ball as she never left the dance floor all night. Shelley’s official birthday is this coming Tuesday, March 12, but her family spent months making arrangements for the perfect party. And with the party just hours away her husband Jerry and daughters Marguerite, Julie and Pacella who travelled from Chicago for the occasion, let her in

on the secret. The surprise went down very well as daughter Marguerite told the Killarney Advertiser this week that Shelley, who is originally from Flesk Castle, Killarney, was very excited all day and thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. “We had to have the party early as she’d have suspected,” Marguerite said. “The planning had been going on for months and we told her hours earlier as she was supposed to sing with Duhallow Choral Group later that evening for a priest’s retirement party.” Needless to say Shelley didn’t make it to her group singing session. Instead, she joined her family, neighbours and friends at 8.30pm in the hotel. And later that night, 10 members of her choral group joined her for her celebration and held an impromptu singing
session - and Shelley joined in. Other family members who made it on the night included Shelley’s brothers Seamus from Mill Road and Sean from Flesk Castle, her sisters Pearl Tansley from Ross Road and Eileen Kinsella who travelled from Wexford. Shelley’s grandson Tommy, Marguerite’s son, who is just a year-and-a-half old made a brief appearance before heading to bed early. There were plenty of cousins and other relatives from Killarney and surrounds as well as from Wexford. All enjoyed a buffet and a cake, as well as plenty of dancing as Dermot and Irene Ring provided the music on the night, Marguerite added. “It was a really really great night – the happiness and joy was in abundance. She did not miss a second of it. She is still on a high, feeling so loved.”

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
Advice for pruning your roses Hopefully the unexpected cold snap over the weekend did not do too much harm to your garden. In mine, the magnolia flowers did a disappearing act, along with crocus, tulip and primrose flowers. The pansies and violas will recover, but are pretty sad looking. All my roses had started sprouting leaves, these are now also a shriveled black mess. Oh well, such is the weather! It did emphasise, for me, the need to prune my roses – fast! There are another few weeks in which to do this, but the sooner the better. Many people are slightly daunted when it comes to pruning roses, but really the worst that can happen is that they may not flower that much in a given year. I have a Rosa rugosa hedge, which gets a shear from the hedge trimmer each year. I simply cut the whole thing to about 30cm above ground level, which gives me a hedge of about 120cm in the summer. To encourage strong, new shoots, I thin out the old ones, they are the very thick woody ones, after the general trim. These are the easiest roses for learner pruners! The next rose, which is safe to prune if you are unsure, is a rambling rose. These can be snipped right at the bottom, about 10 or 15cm above the ground. They are extremely vigorous growers, and unless kept in check can overgrow their place. If you are happy with the length of the rambler, but it is getting too thick, over a pergola or arch maybe, then cut a third, or even half, of the stems out. Carpet roses are also resilient to any type of pruning, as, essentially, they do not need it. I would advise a tidy up of them, though. Cut back any diseased stems, as far as you can, and again, cut out thick old stems. Give a general trim if they are
growing out of shape, and if the flowers were particularly small last year, cut the whole bush back to about 40cm. Hybrid tea roses, which are usually quite large, showy roses, a single flower to a stem, such as ‘Blue Moon’ or ‘Peace’, can be cut back to 20cm above ground. Floribunda roses, several flowers to a single stem, such as ‘Masquerade’ or ‘Arthur Bell’ can be left a little longer, about 3040cm high. Patio/miniature roses can be cut back by half or a third of their height. Roses such as damask, moss, alba, centifolia, gallica or hybrid musk should be cut back after flowering in late spring. A few common examples of these are: the Jacobite rose, Belle de Crecy, Celeste, Chapeau de Napoleon, Felicite Parmentier, Tour de Malakoff and William Lobb. These are generally what we might call ‘old fashioned roses’ or ‘bush roses’. In the case of climbers, allow the main stems to reach the desired height or width, then cut back to that place every year. Sideshoots should be pruned to one third of their length. With all roses it is important to cut out diseased branches, whenever you see them, and cut out any spindly stems. If you have old roses, and want to rejuvenate them, it is safest to cut back one third of the stems almost to the base, each year for three years. The safest way to prune is always to cut about halfway between two buds, in a slant away from the bud below. Use a sharp bypass secateurs, to give a clean cut. Anvil secateurs are used for dead wood, as they squeeze, rather than cut, the stem. If the same tool is used for all pruning, disinfect regularly to kill any disease.

Muckross staff present €1,500 cheque to charity A cheque for €1,500 was presented to the Kerry Hospice Foundation thanks to a kind gesture by one local business. Denis Reidy, General Manager of Muckross House, was in attendance at the Muckross Garden Restaurant recently to make the cheque presentation. Funds were raised during December as Restaurant Manager Colin Baker and staff took some time out from their busy schedule and erected a seasonal themed display and crib at the restaurant. They invited people to make donations to Kerry Hospice Foundation and raised €1,500. The Garden Restaurant is a popular and busy diner and Kerry Hospice Killarney Branch members appreciate this charitable gesture by Colin and staff.
“The Killarney branch are very grateful to Colin Baker and staff at Muckross Gardens for selecting us as beneficiaries for their fundraiser,” Pat Doolin from the Killarney branch of the Kerry Hospice Foundation, said. Their next fundraiser is the Good Friday Vivien O’Shea/Sheila McGillycuddy Memorial Walk which takes place on April 19. “I also want to thank in general the staff at Muckross House & Gardens who have always been very helpful to us when organising our annual Good Friday fundraising walk. The restaurant staff in particular are always accommodating when it comes to event registration and raffle.”

A compendium of extraordinary but true tales AUTHOR: ALLEN FOSTER PUBLISHED BY GILL BOOKS RELEASE DATE: MARCH 8, €8.99
By X
This compendium of stories from all over the country, including seven Kerry stories, illustrates how bizarre and wonderful events and people have entertained us throughout history. From the Lismore man who rode to Fermoy in a tub pulled by a pig, a badger, two cats, a goose and a hedgehog, to the fortune discovered in a Belfast piano once owned by destitute sisters, and the Cashel man who insisted on being evicted while lying in his coffin, this is the perfect gift book for anyone with an interest in Irish history and a taste for the absurd. Allen Foster lives on a farm in Enfield, Co Meath. When not tending to his cattle or walking his beloved dogs, he
finds the time to be a freelance journalist and researcher. He is the author of eight other books, including Foster’s ‘Even Odder Irish Oddities’.

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Jackson to be taken off the airwaves amid fresh abuse allegations Radio stations across the world are refusing to play Michael Jackson’s music after fresh allegations against him of child sex abuse The decision, which includes Irish radio presenter Ryan Tubridy, comes after the airing of a two part US documentary ‘Leaving Neverland’ aired on Channel 4, which featured two men who claimed Jackson sexually abused them for years. Viewers across the world expressed their shock and disgust as the allegations by Wade Robson and James Safechuck claimed that Jackson, who died in 2009 aged 50, sexually abused them when they were aged seven and 10. Tubridy, who presents ‘The Ryan Tubridy
Trump CORNER
Show’ on RTÉ Radio 1, told listeners that he had watched the first part of the documentary. He said it was ‘a fascinating, ghoulish, awful story told quite well, but no need for it to be four hours long’. “It’s worth watching because of the nature of who he was and what an impact he had on the world and on pop culture and music. I did leave with a very different relationship with the man’s music than I had going into it.” However, he did add that there was a niggling sense of doubt in his head.
“What if they’re not telling the truth? What if they’re trying to make a buck? (In the documentary) there’s a bit of that to contemplate and think about and reflect on. The chances are, you won’t hear one again on this programme being played again, because it just leaves one very queasy at the thought.” Since the documentary aired on both Wednesday and Thursday night Michael Jackson’s estate have said “the film takes uncorroborated allegations that supposedly happened 20 years ago and treats them as fact”. They now plan to engage in a campaign of adverts, lawsuits and interviews in an attempt to salvage his image.
“Dems cannot legitimately win 2020 election” - Donald Trump President Donald Trump is already suggesting that Democrats cannot beat him fairly in the 2020 Presidential Election.
Trump this week tweeted: "The Democrats in Congress yesterday were vicious and totally showed their cards for everyone to see.
Alien enthusiasts spot UFOs in Peru! Flying objects have been spotted hovering over Lima airport in Peru this week - and alien enthusiasts claim they’re UFOs! Several witnesses reported seeing flying objects - which they claim were not planes - hovering near Jorge Chávez International Airport. Staff at the Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation (Corpac) say flights were delayed and claim that they saw two UFOs. An online video, while unverified, seems to show two bright objects hovering over the airport. While some have claimed that these are simply drones, or even planes, others believe they are evidence of alien activity. Prominent alien hunter Scott C Waring claims that UFOs are often seen hovering over airports. “The object teased for an hour before just disappearing and flights were delayed,” Mr Waring wrote on his blog UFO Sightings Daily. “Why? Flying objects are expected at the airport making even a UFO sighting more relaxed and less of a surprise. I say let them land. Give them clearance!”
When the Republicans had the Majority they never acted with such hatred and scorn! The Dems are trying to win an election in 2020 that they know they cannot legitimately win!" Trump 2020 campaign press secretary Kayleigh McEnany agreed with the sentiment in a statement on the Democratic investigations."These desperate Democrats know they cannot beat President Trump in 2020, so instead they have embarked on a disgraceful witch hunt with one singular aim: topple the will of the American people and seize the power that they have zero chance at winning legitimately," she said.

Free Senior Citizen Guidebook published Home Instead Senior Care, Ireland’s largest provider of non-medical home care services, has released the 2019 edition of its ‘Bible for Older People’, ‘The Senior Citizen and Family Carer Guidebook’. The popular annual publication aims to ensure Ireland’s older people, and those who care for them, have access to the key information they need to learn about ageing in Ireland. “The Senior Citizen and Family Carer Guidebook is available free of charge,” Tim Healy, local spokesperson for Home Instead said. “It’s a comprehensive resource on ageing in Ireland, and the inspiration for this year’s edition is ‘planning for successful ageing’,” he said. “This guidebook helps us to truly honour our mission, which is to enhance the lives of older people and their families.” Home Instead’s Senior Citizen Guidebook shares experience and expertise built up from the company’s 14 years of operation in Ireland, and contains valuable contributions from a range of experts and organisations who have Ireland’s older people at heart.

Four Kerry companies win prestigious awards Four Kerry-based companies have been named as Deloitte ‘Best Managed Companies’ at the annual awards gala in Dublin, held in association with Bank of Ireland. The companies were awarded this designation following a detailed qualification and judging process that evaluates the entire management team and business strategy in some of Ireland’s top privately owned businesses, looking beyond financial performance at criteria such as operational excellence, strategic planning, governance and talent strategy. These companies requalify to join a network of 136 companies which were awarded the status of Best Managed this year. The Best Managed Companies network this year has total revenues of almost €11 billion, export sales of almost €3 billion and total employment of approximately 44,000 people. Of the four companies from Kerry, Fexco was presented with the ‘Gold Standard’ accolade, having secured Best Managed status for four consecutive years, while the Garvey Group was awarded ‘Platinum
Standard’, having received the award for seven years in a row. Other winners were FreeFlow in Tralee and the H2 Group in Listowel. This year, 27 of the 32 counties are represented by the winning companies, showing the wide spread around Ireland. 40 percent of the winners are Dublin-based, while Cork and Antrim accounted for 10 percent and nine percent of the winners respectively. The list of winners come from a broad mix of industries including the manufacturing, engineering, technology and media, energy, financial services, life sciences, and healthcare sectors. This year’s judging panel members were Frank Ryan, Chair of the Judging Panel; Brendan Jennings, CEO, Deloitte Ireland; Tom Hayes, Chief Executive, Bank of Ireland Corporate Banking; Siobhan McAleer, Commercial Director at the IMI; Rose Hynes, Chairman of the Shannon Group Board and Origin Enterprises; and Feargal Mooney, former Chief Executive Officer of HostelWorld. "Well done to all of the winning companies on their achievement,” Anya Cum-
Gardaí arrested seven people in relation to a number of recent incidents of burglary, theft, possession of drugs and public order. Five people have been charged, two will be summonsed to court and one was released pending a file to the DPP. Eight warrants were also executed on five people who have since been brought before the courts. A total of three premises were searched under warrant which resulted in the seizure of small quantities of cannabis herb and cocaine. A crime prevention stand was set up in Manor West Shopping Centre where Gardaí gave the relevant crime prevention advice on topics such as fraud, bogus traders, personal safety and home security. Members of the Community Policing Unit also visited two schools in the area where they spoke to students about road safety and how to be safe online. As part of the day of action, 11 checkpoints were carried out by uniform and
detective Gardaí which resulted in a number of road traffic offences being detected. A ‘test purchasing’ operation was set up which resulted in three detections of licenced premises selling alcohol to a person underage. A file will now be prepared in relation to these detections. “The main focus for this Day of Action was to prevent crime, raise awareness and to enhance community engagement,” Superintendent Dan Keane said. “Providing the relevant crime prevention advice to the public is vital, so that’s why we were out in our schools, shops and at checkpoints, telling people about how they can keep themselves and their homes safe from criminals. We also took the time to tell people about our ‘See Something, Say Something’ campaign which allows people to inform us, by text, of anti-social behaviour that is happening in Tralee. This can be done by texting ‘TRALEE’ and the incident details to 50555.”

mins, Partner, Deloitte said. “The Best Managed Companies process is a rigorous one, examining every facet of an organisation, and the bar is set high by our judging panel. As ever, the spread of companies, right around the country and across a number of industries, underlines the importance of Irish and Northern Irish
companies to the economy and in the midst of economic uncertainty, technology disruption, an open competitive market and full employment, the continued strong performance of these businesses is admirable. In the current environment, it is important for this contribution to be recognised, supported and showcased.”

you are only as old as your spine
Beautiful skin doesn’t happen by accident Professional treatment and correct home-care equals best results for beautiful skin. As the old saying goes ‘prevention is better than cure’ - and hydration on the inside is a must for improving your skin on the outside - so I suggest drinking at least two litres of water a day. However, for the surface of your skin it’s important to get the correct professional advice and I’d definitely recommend that you get a fresh skin consultation every couple of years - as our skin changes as we get older. It may just be time to add something to your skincare routine as it’s good to change things up to get the best results. What may have worked for years you may think is still working - but you must remember your skin is constantly aging and even if you feel your skincare routine is OK - it’s definitely time for change. Getting regular facials is a great way to make sure your skin is prepared to absorb all the creams you use at home, and this will definitely help you to get the best
results out of all your serums and creams. At the end of a facial I often hear from clients that their skin feels different to the cream they use at home. However, they are often very surprised when I tell them it’s the same cream. Having the skin resurfaced with either microdermabrasion or a chemical peel helps to exfoliate at the deepest level. Afterwards, when clients apply their daily moisturiser, two main results I hear back is that they use much less cream for the same feeling of softness and that their creams last longer. Also having a facial can be a very rewarding treatment, as it not only improves the circulation which in turn boosts colour tone and removes dead cells – but also provides a holistic level of well-being. Take some time out for yourself to recharge and relax. Call Jill to book your skin consultation 064 6632966.

Park Hotel Kenmare joins Tourism Ireland American sales blitz Tourism Ireland, together with a delegation of 12 Irish tourism companies, including the Park Hotel Kenmare, recently undertook a sales blitz to the US – meeting, and doing business with, hundreds of travel professionals in Washington DC, Atlanta (Georgia) and Boca Raton (Florida). The schedule included a B2B event in each city, with an interactive presentation showcasing Ireland – giving the participating companies, including the Park Hotel Kenmare, a platform to promote and sell their products and services to the key American decision-makers in attendance. It also included opportunities for networking with travel and lifestyle journalists and influencers. Tourism Ireland has prioritised North America, as a market which offers a strong return on investment, in terms of holiday visitors and expenditure. In 2019, Tourism Ireland aims to surpass the record-breaking performance of
2018 and to grow revenue from North American visitors by +8 percent ie. €1.99 billion generated by 2.17 million visitors (+6 percent). “Our ‘Fill your heart with Ireland’ sales mission provided an excellent platform to spread the word about the many great things to see and do right in Kerry and Ireland,” Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s Head of North America, said. “In 2018, we welcomed a record two million North American visitors to the island of Ireland. Looking to the year ahead, we are confident that our strategy – combined with more airline seats than ever before from the US, a strong dollar, as well as the strength and competitiveness of the vacation experience right around the island of Ireland – will deliver further growth. We look forward to welcoming more of our great friends from the United States this year and in the years to come.” Similar events will take place in Chicago, Boston and Dallas, in April; and on the west coast of the US in late 2019.

Renovate your home without overhauling your budget Spring is officially here – and the change of season is one of the best and most popular times of the year for home improvements. Home upgrading is a trend which has seen somewhat of a surge in popularity in recent years – and for good reason. A refurbishment can completely transform a home. A nationwide survey by
the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) found that a significant two thirds of adults had carried out home improvements between 2014 and 2017. For many, it is also the only affordable

option if they find they have outgrown their home and need more space for the family. In the same survey, one quarter estimated that they had spent between €1,000 and €3,000 upgrading their home. 10 percent spent between €3,000 and €5,000. Many households planning to renovate their home would understandably not have this spare cash to hand. It can be tempting for them to fund the planned renovations through their credit card. However, with the high levels of interest charged, even if you clear the minimum balance, this can end up being a very pricey decision. For the cost-conscious home improver – a credit union loan is the best option, and is often approved very quickly. Indeed, the ILCU survey found that of those needing to borrow to fund their renovations, six in 10 said they would use their local credit union. Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer with Killarney Credit Union explains why a credit union home improvement loan is a solid choice for those wanting to renovate their home without incurring unnecessary debt. “We offer the loan at a great value APR rate of 8.3 percent for loans
over €5,000**, which means that if you borrow €7,000, you will end up paying back just €142.00 over 60 months. So it’s a very cost-effective option. Not only that, but our loans are typically approved in two days, so you can get started on those renovation plans right away. We are also happy to offer our loans to brand new members – so there is no requirement for you to have saved with us for a period of time before you can avail of the loan.” Other benefits to the home improvement loan include the willingness of the credit union to work with each individual borrower to structure repayments in a way that will suit their individual circumstances. There are no hidden fees or administration charges. Borrowers are also free to repay the loan early, should they wish, without any penalties. “So whether your plans include building on an extension, overhauling the kitchen, laying new carpets or floorboards, or just giving your home a new lick of paint, talk to us here at Killarney Credit Union. You’ll find we are happy to provide flexible loans of any size to suit your grand design plans,” Helen said. ** For a €7,000, 5 year variable interest rate loan with 60 monthly repayments of €142.00, an interest rate of 8 percent, a representative APR of 8.3 percent, the total amount payable by the member is €8,516. Just like a good pair of shoes, what’s underneath your feet is crucial to the look and feel of your home. By determining your flooring preferences first, selecting other finishes to tie in with the appearance of your flooring will be far simpler thereafter. Laminate flooring is quickly becoming one of the most popular flooring options, thanks to its ability to mimic the warmth and appearance of almost every different hardwood in a wide array of styles, colours, and finishes. Plus, it’s quick and easy installation, simple to maintain, its durable, and the fact it’s kid, pet, and allergy friendly, makes it a firm favourite with many homeowners. Floor tiles are another popular choice in recent times, particularly porcelain tiles - considered a big improvement on the standard ceramic tiles of earlier years. These tiles not only look incredible, they are also highly resistant to wear, making them an excellent choice for high-traffic

gas will vaporise and create heat which then transfers to your hot water via a heat exchanger. Below are some of the facts laid bare.
The East Kerry based company also specialises in Solar Thermodynamics which means come hail, rain, wind, or shine - you can produce 100 percent of your hot water from one small panel. They offer state-of-the-art plumbing services using advanced technology and updated equipment with a goal to assist you with trouble free plumbing in your home or business. The Thermodynamic Solar Panels are perfect for Ireland for one simple reason – a single panel application can offer a family of six people 100 percent of its hot water every single day of the year. They are normally located on the roof but can also be wall mounted. The thermodynamic solar panel uses all Irish weather conditions to vaporise a very cold inert refrigerant gas that flows through the panel. Once the gas in the Thermodynamic Solar Panel vaporises, it passes down a very small compressor located near your water cylinder. The
The Energie Thermodynamic Solar Panel contains a Solar Keymark which qualifies it as a solar panel. It does however utilise heat-pump technology also. The reality is that in a country like Ireland, where there’s no guarantee of sunshine, this product offers lower overall running costs than other solar products with better guaranteed performance. What you are guaranteed is hot water all year round and a better performing system if the sun is shining. Don Murphy Plumbing offers a committed and excellence service which means that you are assured of the best customer service. Why not call today to find out more about how easy and quick it is to install Thermodynamic Solar Panels in your home.

One-off Bugatti La Voiture Noire most expensive car ever
First electric Porsche already sold out Porsche’s first full battery-electric model has ‘Taycan’ the record for pre-orders for any Porsche product ever, company CEO Oliver Blume has confirmed. As excitement builds in the lead-up to the launch of the Porsche Taycan electric sports car later this year, Blume admitted there was concern for the company’s ability to meet demand. “We have 20,000 pre-orders already,” Blume confirmed. “No Porsche has ever had 20,000 pre orders. Not ever.” Due on sale from mid-2020, the 450kW Taycan will compete not only with the Tesla Model S, but with its sister car, Audi’s e-tron GT, and Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming EQS, based on Benz’s first dedicated EV platform. While the initial cars will come with allwheel drive, there will also be a rear-
drive variant, and Porsche plans to use its power electronics to make the car handle more like a rear-drive car than an AWD model. Porsche’s initial electric car, which will be joined by a crossover version previewed by the Mission E Cross Turismo concept, will use permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors mounted on each of its axles, while Audi’s e-tron uses asynchronous motors. The Taycan’s centre-of-gravity is 80mm lower than the 911’s, with 400 lithium-ion pouch cells, with up to 300kW of safe charging power.
It’s official, the Bugatti La Voiture Noire revealed at this week’s Geneva Motor Show is the most expensive new car of all time. Priced at an astonishing €11 million, the Bugatti La Voiture Noire has been created to pay tribute to the legendary Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic sportscar that was once heralded as the most advanced car of all time when it went on sale back in 1935. Featuring more aggressive styling than the Bugatti Chiron, the new Bugatti La Voiture Noire gets a sharper front grille flanked by two huge air intakes and a pair of swept-back front headlamps that recede back along the front fenders. Referencing the original Atlantic, Bugatti designers have added a sharp dorsal seam that runs from the bonnet, across the screen, along the roof and all the way through to the engine cover. At the rear of the car, the Chiron has been redesigned to incorporate a flow-
ing red LED light strip that stretches across the car. Finally, six separate exhaust pipes hint at the mighty quad-turbocharged 8.0-litre W16 that’s thought to produce the same 1120kW and 1600Nm of torque as the stock Chiron. Bugatti has not disclosed who commissioned the one-off La Voiture Noire but before Geneva it was widely reported that none other than former Volkswagen Group’s Supervisory Chairman Ferdinand Piech was the man writing the cheque.

2022 ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA ALL-TERRAIN CONCEPT DEBUTS
The Lagonda All-Terrain Concept is proof Aston Martin’s reborn luxury brand is not afraid to sacrifice some brand kudos to challenge other luxury SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Claimed to preview a pure-electric production SUV that will be on sale by 2022.
SLEEK SKODA VISION IV CONCEPT REVEALED
The Kodiaq-sized Skoda iV Vision concept has been unwrapped at the Geneva Motor Show, previewing a real production car that will arrive some time in 2021. Claimed to be the first pure-electric vehicle from the Czech brand to be based on the Volkswagen Group’s dedicated MEB
platform, the Skoda Vision iV will be considerably larger than VW’s own I.D. Neo that launches later this year. Capable of covering up to 500km between charges, the car-maker claims an 80 percent recharge takes just 30 minutes when using a fast charger.

To our main sponsor Independent Irish Health Foods we are truly grateful for your generosity and continued help & support. To the many other organisations that kindly donated to us thank you so much for thinking of us. To our loyal audiences who filled the INEC and raised the roof nightly, we are forever in your debt. To our amazing cast, thank you all for

O precious tiny sweet little one You will always be to me, So perfect pure and innocent Just as you were meant to be.
Time cannot steal the treasures, That we carry in our hearts, Nor ever dim the shining thoughts, Our cherished past imparts.
We dreamed of you and of your life, And all that it would be, We waited and longed for you, To come and join our family.
For the memories of the ones we loved, Still cast a gentle glow, To grace our days and light our paths, Wherever we may go.
We never had the chance to play, To laugh to rock to wiggle, We long to hold you, Touch you now and listen to you giggle.
Remembered with Love Nial, Kathleen, Keith, Jake & Rogan.
I will always be your mother, He’ll always be your Dad, You will always be our child, The child that we had.
Though your smile is gone forever, And your hand we cannot touch, Still we have so many memories, Of the one we loved so much. Your memory is our keepsake, With which we’ll never part, God has you in His keeping, We have you in our hearts. Sadly missed and never forgotten by your grandparents Timmy & Nuala Looney.

In loving memory of Siobhan Kelly who died on the 22nd February 2011, and her loving husband Tim, who died on 20th April 2006, late of Artigallivan, Headford, Killarney. They were parents so very rare, Content in their home and always there, On earth they toiled, in heaven they rest, God bless you Mom and Dad, you were the best. No words we write can ever say, How much me miss ye everyday, No one knows the grief we bear, When the family gather and ye’re not there.
In loving memory of Kathleen O’Leary, The Park Killarney Who died on the 7th March 2010.
In God’s care ye rest above, In our hearts ye rest with love, Time passes, memories stay, Quietly remembered every day.
Memories are precious They don’t fade away We think of you always Not just today.
Forever in our hearts and prayers Love always from all the family.
Always remembered by your nieces and nephews.
In loving memory of Jenelle Maria Hickey Who died on the 7th March 2006 I am sending a dove to heaven, With a parcel on its wings, Be careful when you open it, It’s full of beautiful things. Inside are a million kisses, Wrapped up in a million hugs, To say how much I miss you, And to send you all my love.
We talk, we laugh, we play the part, But beyond the sorrow lie broken hearts, The sorrow we feel we can never explain, And the ache in our hearts will always remain.
MCCARTHY

2ND ANNIVERSARY O’DONOGHUE
O’SULLIVAN
In loving memory of Jenelle Maria Hickey Who died on the 7th March 2006 Don’t think of her as gone away, Her journey’s just begun, Life holds so many facets, This earth is only one. Just think of her as resting, From the sorrows and the tears, In a place of warmth and comfort, Through all the days and years. Think how she must be wishing That we could know today, How nothing but our sadness, Can really pass away. And think of her as living, In the hearts of those she touched, For nothing loved is ever lost, And she is loved so much. Love you always and forever Your Uncle Alan, Pia and your cousins Bella & Elyssa.
In loving memory of our dear Dad, Patrick Leahy Who died on the 8th March 1969, Late of 41 Daltons Avenue, Killarney. R.I.P. Time passes, memories stay, Quietly remembered every day. Remember me when I am gone away Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay. Remember me when no more day by day You tell me of our future that you planned: Only remember me; you understand It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterwards remember, do not grieve: For, if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad. Turning as we walk away, We wish we had one more day. Always remembered by his wife Maura, son Finbarr, daughters Fiona & Mary, son-in-laws James Collins & Sean Brosnan, and grandchildren Molly, Grace and Ross. Anniversary Mass will be on Saturday 9th March in St. Mary’s Cathedral at 6:15pm.

Calm after the storm Murphy leads Kerry to superb comeback win | By Adam Moynihan
Kerry captain Paul Murphy may be only deputising until a Dr Crokes player returns to the fold but he certainly played the role to perfection last weekend as The Kingdom came from behind to beat Monaghan in Killarney. Sunday morning’s spectacular snowstorm meant the match was in danger of being called off but thankfully the skies cleared just in time for the footballers to take to the field. The match itself was stormy enough too, particularly in that second half, but Ker-
ry’s skipper steadied the ship and safely steered his team to shore. Murphy was immense, sweeping up possession on countless occasions and initiating attacks with his electrifying pace and clever passing. His decision-making is impeccable; whenever Kerry are un-
der the cosh, Murphy is invariably the man you want on the ball. He just always seems to be in control of the situation. For me anyway, he’s the first name on the teamsheet at the moment. It will be interesting to see what happens when Gavin White comes back in. Will Keane go with the dynamic trio of Murphy, White and Tom O’Sullivan in the half back line? Murphy and White are guaranteed starters, that much is obvious, but both tend to do their best work going forward. O’Sullivan is also an attack-minded wing back so as exciting as that half back line looks, it might leave Kerry a bit vulnerable defensively against certain oppo-
sition. When exactly White and his Crokes teammates will become available for selection is currently unknown. Kerry play Roscommon away on Sunday, March 24 but the Crokes boys will naturally be otherwise engaged for a few days after the All-Ireland final on March 17. Keane will want his Crokes players back ASAP but they will surely be afforded the week off regardless. That means that White’s comeback could come in the league final (if Kerry get there) on March 31. Would Keane throw him straight back in, and also hand him the captaincy in accordance with the law
SPORT
8.03.2019 according to the Kerry County Board? It’s a tough one. Either way, he will surely captain Kerry in the Munster Championship when that rolls around in June. Alongside Murphy (or rather, behind, in front and all around him), Jack Sherwood had another excellent game in defence before being forced off with a painful-looking injury. Hopefully it’s nothing more than a knock because on current form the Firies man is a key component of this Kerry rearguard. Like Murphy, Sherwood exudes calmness on the ball and his versatility means that he can mark a number of different types of forward. It hasn’t been vintage Kerry – they have scored fewer goals (1) than any other team in the country – but you can’t but be impressed by bainisteoir Peter Keane, who has now won 22 consecutive games as Kerry manager at minor and senior level. At times it appeared as though the Monaghan game was getting away from Kerry as some unforced errors drew groans from the freezing cold crowd, but Keane’s charges responded in rambunctious fashion. When the going got tough, guys like Dara Moynihan, Gavin O’Brien, Tommy Walsh and Tomás Ó Sé, Keane players all, made big plays to turn the tide in The Kingdom’s favour. Personally, I haven’t been this excited about a Kerry team in a long time. It’s far too early to speculate whether or not it will all come together for them in 2019, that goes without saying, but there’s definitely something there. The league table has an intriguing look about it heading into the final two games. Kerry will top the division if they manage to defeat Mayo next weekend but lose and things could get very squeaky indeed. If that happens and Galway and Dublin win their remaining fixtures, Kerry would need to defeat Roscommon on the final day to avoid a four-way tie at the top. Tied teams are separated by head-tohead but if more than two teams are level, it goes to points difference. Dublin (+20) and Kerry (+13) lead the way in that department as things stand but a lot can change over the course of the next two games. One brief note for club players and supporters: the County Board have confirmed that if Kerry do reach the final of the National League on March 31 then it will have an impact on the opening round of the various Club Championships, which are due to kick off the same weekend. Any fixtures involving a club who have a player on the Kerry panel will be pushed back a week, to April 6/7. Looking at the current Kerry squad, that would mean that all four Senior Club Championship games would be postponed as well as four of the eight Intermediate ties. Half of the Junior Premier fixtures would also be affected. But we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Greene sinks nine threes as Lakers confirm playoff spot NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 __________________________________________________________________________

KILLARNEY SPORTS CENTRE
| By Adam Moynihan
An incredible shooting display from team captain Mark Greene helped the Scotts Lakers to an impressive 105-86 victory over Tolka Rovers last Saturday night as the Killarney side officially confirmed their spot in the 2019 National League Playoffs. Greene shot an incredible seven three-pointers in the first half alone and with Englishman Dailian Mason also on song from long range, the hosts quickly built up a commanding lead. Fans speculated that Greene could be on course to break the Irish record for threes in a game (unconfirmed reports suggest that 11 is the most), but the skipper added “just” two more in the second half before checking out of the game late in the fourth quarter. Team management informed Greene at half time that he was on course to break a record but with teammates getting good looks elsewhere, the captain was happy enough to let it slide. “I wasn’t going to be running around taking bad shots just to break the record,” Greene said. “I don’t know if a night like
that will ever come again but I won’t be worrying about it too much. The important thing is that we were moving the ball well and guys were getting open shots, especially in the second half. “We were quite happy with the team performance overall.” St Paul’s PRO Eamonn Keogh later told me that Colin O'Reilly also scored nine three-pointers for the Gleneagle Lakers against Waterford in 2005. Remarkably, O’Reilly scored 53 points in total in a 117107 loss. American Keith Friel went one better, draining 10 threes for the Lakers against Tralee Tigers in a pre-season tournament in 2003. Eamonn also recalls that American John Carson scored 10 threes in a 50-point outing for St Declan's Dublin in a televised National Cup game back in 1988.

Mark Greene taking part in a half-time blindfold shooting challenge to help his mom, Karen, raise funds for charity.
Whatever about breaking records, Greene’s performance was spectacular and is sure to live long in the memory for all in attendance. Teammates Dailian Mason, Seán O’Brien, Papito Hersisia, Andrew Fitzgerald, Cian Clernon and Séamus Brosnan also made key contributions as Cormac O’Donoghue’s side coasted to an impressive victory over Tolka, who now find themselves in fourth place in the north. This result coupled with IT Carlow’s defeat means that the Lakers are now guaranteed a top two finish in the Southern Conference. Once the regular season is finished (just two games remain), they will face Northern Conference leaders DBS Éanna away in the semi-final. Beating the 21-0 Dubliners will be a tall order but if Greene shoots the ball like he did on Saturday night, they’re in with a fighting chance.

East Kerry's Big Five plotting Division 1 glory | By Adam Moynihan
We are experiencing a golden era for football in East Kerry. There can be no denying that. Dr Crokes are dominating, Kilcummin have just won an All-Ireland, The Sem won back-to-back Hogan Cups, and the Kerry minors have won five in a row with East Kerry youngsters playing key roles. We’ve produced David Clifford, Gavin White and Dara Moynihan, to name but a few, in the space of a couple of years. In short, the district is churning out ballers at a frightening rate. It may be a couple of years before some of these promising club players really make their presence felt at senior level but a quick glance at the County League tables suggests that East Kerry sides are certainly on the rise. This season there are no fewer than five clubs from East Kerry in Division 1: Dr Crokes, Legion, Spa, Rathmore and newly-promoted Kilcummin. We have far more top-flight clubs than any other district in the county. Apart from East Kerry’s Big Five, there are three teams from Tralee, two from West Kerry, one from Kenmare District and one from South Kerry. Glenflesk and Dr Crokes B, meanwhile, will be vying for promotion to Division
1, although the latter can’t actually go up as they are not allowed to play in the same division as their A team. Unless the Dr Crokes first team somehow get relegated to Division 2…? God knows what would happen then. Much like the top tier, Division 3 is also littered with clubs from East Kerry. Fossa, Firies, Listry, Currow and Gneeveguilla will all be hoping for a big year and there are bound to be some keenly contested derbies over the course of the campaign. In fact, there are two all-East Kerry clashes on the opening day alone as Currow face Gneeveguilla and Firies play host to near neighbours Fossa in Farranfore. In total, 11 of the 13 clubs from the east are currently in the top three divisions with just Cordal (Division 4) and Scartaglen (Division 5A) operating in the lower reaches of the County League.
DIVISION 1 PREVIEW
Defending champions Dr Crokes are on the hunt for another league title and if the past decade is anything to go by, the competition is theirs to lose. The Division 1 trophy has been stowed away in Lewis Road for four years now and in total they have won the league seven times in nine years. The Crokes are blessed with numbers they now have A, B and C teams in the Senior County League – but one interesting thing to look out for is how winning the All-Ireland might affect their panel. Some older heads, such as Eoin Brosnan and Colm Cooper, may well choose to bow out on a high if Crokes defeat Corofin on St Patrick’s Day. Others may also be considering their future, although personally I can’t see the likes of Shane Doolan, Brian Looney, Kieran O’Leary or John Payne, Crokes’ oldest starters at present, stepping aside any time soon. Either way, if Brosnan and Cooper do decide to pack it in, that would naturally leave a void. You simply can’t replace experience like that. We had an indifferent league campaign with Killarney Legion last time out and with a new management team of Ste-
phen Stack and Pat Flanagan on board, we will be hoping for better in 2019. It’s a very tough division, though, and at the moment we have three players in with Kerry, which is more than most of the teams we’ll be up against. On a positive note, the return of Podge O’Connor and Kieran Slattery has helped to bolster the squad. Spa enjoyed an incredible start to the 2018 County League, winning their opening five games and putting themselves in a really good position to challenge for a spot in the final. Unfortunately, they were eliminated from the Intermediate in the group phase and like most teams they seem to struggle with motivation when they don’t have championship to aim for. If they fare better in the Intermediate this year, league results could well follow suit. Key player Dara Moynihan will be obviously be unavailable but the good news is that former Kerry minor captain Liam Kearney is back in action following a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Rathmore didn’t have a great year in 2018 by their standards. They had a poor championship and relinquished their O’Donoghue cup title to the Crokes, while in the league they needed a result on the final day to guarantee their survival. Shane Ryan will be a massive loss. The Kerry keeper plays full forward for his club and frequently provides the team’s main scoring threat, both from frees and from play. Others will have to step up to the mark in his stead. All-Ireland Intermediate champions Kilcummin are riding the crest of a wave following their triumphant visit to Croke

As impressive as they were throughout their Intermediate campaign, they were brought back down to earth with a bang when Dr Crokes defeated them with 22 points to spare in the O’Donoghue Cup final. Division 1 will be a big step up for them. Having said that, Willie Maher has built a very solid team with plenty of determination (and no little skill), so they certainly have what it takes to claim a few major scalps before the year is out.
PREDICTION: Dr Crokes are obviously favourites but after that it’s very hard to call. Rahilly’s impressed last year en route to a second place finish but they will be without Kerry stars Tommy Walsh and Gavin O’Brien, so they might find it difficult to repeat the feat. Many teams in Division 1 seem content to just survive but there appears to be very little to choose between the chasing pack heading into the opening weekend of fixtures. A good start for any team could realistically set the tone for a title challenge.

Glenflesk crest voted “nicest in East Kerry” | By Adam Moynihan
Glenflesk GAA sampled victory away from the playing fields this week as the club’s crest was voted the nicest in East Kerry. In a Battle of the Crests competition that was hosted on my personal Instagram account (@adammoynihan), Glenflesk beat off stiff opposition from 12 footballing rivals from East Kerry (plus Beaufort) to eventually earn the honour of having the district’s favourite badge. The format of the tournament was straight knock-out, an O’Donoghue Cup for crests, if you will, and Glenflesk’s colourful emblem made light work of Scartaglen, Rathmore and Fossa en route to a final showdown with fierce rivals Spa. Anticipation was high ahead of the decider but in the end, Glenflesk ran out comfortable winners, raking in 65% of the votes. Fossa’s distinctive black and red crest narrowly defeated Kilcummin in a playoff to finish third. There was a serious amount of political voting going on if I’m being honest. Let’s put it this way: very few Legion people
voted for Dr Crokes and vice versa. But in the end, Glenflesk was the undisputed winner, drawing votes from supporters, rivals and neutrals alike. As a part time graphic designer myself, I really enjoyed this project. There are certainly some interesting emblems in this part of the world. My own personal favourite, apart from the Legion one obviously, is Rathmore’s symmetrical black and red shield, but that was soundly defeated by the eventual winner in the last eight. This competition kicks off a series of articles detailing the stories behind the GAA crests we hold so close to our hearts. If you have any interesting images or information relating to your own club crest, please pass it on via sport@killarneyadvertiser.ie. WHAT’S IN A CREST? The Glenflesk GAA crest was designed in 2003 by Becky Crancher, a student at Raheen NS, as part of a competition involving all of the schools in the parish. Graphic designer Damien Switzer judged the competition and then created the digital form of the crest from Becky’s design. The colourful emblem includes Flesk River, O’Donoghue’s Castle, a church, a bridge, a football field, and symbols of traditional music and dance.
#1 - GLENFLESK
“It was important to the club that we kept it traditional,” Damien explains. “A lot of clubs and counties for that matter are moving away from the traditional crest to more modern looking logos, which ironically date very quickly.” If you look at the lower part of the crest you will also notice the text ‘CLG Naomh Átha’. This translates to ‘St Agatha’s GAA Club’, the little-known but official name of Glenflesk GAA.

ruary’s Manager of the Month Award, eventually winding up third out of 480 participants. Each month the top-ranked manager receives a €50 voucher from our generous sponsors Brian James and although Luke just missed out on first place, we thought his efforts were still worthy of a prize. Adam Moynihan invited the prodigious soccer fan into the Killarney Advertiser offices this week to talk tactics and receive his special consolation prize, an official Nike Premier League football. Luke also had some good advice for struggling managers: don’t overthink it. Luke’s father, Denis, and older brother, Dylan, are also fantasy enthusiasts and Denis admitted that the youngest Tucker seems to have the right idea. Speaking after their meeting, Adam said that he was really impressed by the young Manchester United supporter. “Luke’s message about not overthinking it will certainly resonate with a lot of fantasy managers. He backs himself and as any top manager will tell you, confidence is key.”
TRIVIA
F1's broadcast deal with Sky means UK-based fans need a subscription to the broadcaster's dedicated channel to watch every grand prix live this season. The UK's free-to-air options have now been reduced to highlights and live coverage of the British Grand Prix, which Hamilton said is "definitely not cool". While he said he does not understand the move to pay TV and that it is "not my job to come up with the answers for that", Hamilton said he was not convinced by the move.
"The more people you have at the grand prix, the more atmosphere it is," he said. "It is the fans that makes the sport what it is, so the more you block them or deter them the worse the business is going to be for the people that own it. "But that is nothing to do with me. When the fans do come or the people that I do get to meet at the races, I try to utilise the opportunity to connect with them." Hamilton said he grew up watching F1 races on the BBC "and it was awesome".
