"You can overcome anything" Inspiring local teen shares cancer story to help others | By Michelle Crean
One inspiring teen's story of how she bravely overcame the shocking diagnosis of Stage 4 cancer is part of a new book which is set to help others. 18-year-old Holly Power, daughter of Vivian and Tony from Lewis Road, was left devastated to learn that her cancer was Stage 4 and advanced to her lungs, but is now bravely sharing her story to help raise funds for a cancer charity. During the summer, local woman Bríd O'Connor wanted to create a book of stories about locals who overcame the odds and asked Holly to share her cancer journey. 'Spark - Stories to ignite body, mind and soul' is now ready to purchase and Holly is hoping her story will not only inspire others but help raise vital funds for Kerry cancer service 'Comfort for Chemo'. "I was a bit hesitant to share my story at first," Holly, who is now making a good recovery, told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "However, when I thought about it and how it might help others I decided to do it. It's for Comfort for Chemo which is why I did it."
DIAGNOSIS
EXCLUSIVE
Holly, who is this week back playing for her beloved Dr Crokes, was just 16-yearsold when she was first diagnosed. After months of feeling run down and tired all the time, she eventually learned

that she had cancer. "I had been sick on and off since January that year [2018] but the weather was bad and I thought I was run down. I had swollen glands a lot and I was getting Vitamin B injections. Towards the end of May I had swollen glands under my arm. All my blood tests were coming back clear which is why no-one suspected." Doctors then sent her to the Bons in Cork where she was eventually diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. "We were to go to Cork on Friday but got called to come on Thursday instead." She explained how she was oblivious to
Closing date set for vaccination centre | By Sean Moriarty The Killarney vaccination centre will close before the end of October, the HSE has confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser. With the majority of the population in Kerry now vaccinated and the current phase of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign drawing to a close, Monavalley Industrial Estate in Tralee will now become the county's new vaccine centre. More than 61,000 vaccinations were administered at the Killarney Sports and
Leisure Centre since it opened in April. The Killarney centre held its last walk-in vaccination clinic yesterday (Thursday) but will be used as a base over the next two weeks for the teams travelling to nursing homes and residential settings to administer third doses to residents aged over 65. “We are very grateful to Kerry County Council and to Killarney Sports and Leisure for their support throughout the pandemic, and especially for their assistance in the smooth running of the Killarney vaccination centre,” Michael Fitzgerald, Chief Officer of Cork Kerry
the seriousness of the diagnosis at first and tried as best she could to stay positive. "Being diagnosed was hard at first. They had to check all the [lymph] nodes and I had a biopsy. The consultant then sent them off and they both came back clear, and he said the lymphoma was hard to diagnose. I had to wait two weeks to hear and they said I had a 50/50 chance that I'd have it." And while trying to gets to grips with the shocking news, worse was to come. Just two weeks after starting chemo Holly and her parents were doubly shocked to Community Healthcare, told the Killarney Advertiser. “As we move to a new phase of vaccinations and indeed in our relationship with COVID-19, we have been planning locally for the best way to deliver any future vaccinations. This includes reorganising and consolidating our vaccination programme with the establishment of a new regional vaccination centre in Tralee in the Monavalley Industrial Estate.”
BASKETBALL
The move is good news for St Paul's Basketball Club. The National League side was facing the prospect of being left without a home venue if the centre remained operational. Only two venues in the town are suitable for National League Basketball but cross-town rivals, The Killarney Cougars already play at the Presentation Gym. The basketball season starts this weekend. However, they had anticipat-
be told that her cancer was in fact Stage 4 and had advanced into her lungs. "It was bad enough just to be diagnosed but that was a double blow." Life was hard for the teen as not only did she have to give up playing football but she also couldn't go anywhere due to a low immune system and risk of infection. She also missed out on Fifth Year in St Brigid's which she had to repeat the following year. "I wasn't able to go to places, I had to stay at home a lot because of my immune sysem. Friends called and had to sanitise, that was before lockdown, but my family and friends kept me going. I was trying to have the best outlook. The word cancer is so scary, you think the worst case scenario." Just under a year from the initial diagnosis Holly and her family were relieved to hear good news. In May 2019 she was told that the cancer was reducing enough that she could go on with normal life. "That was such a relief." She said it proves that you can overcome anything. She's now encouraging people to buy the book which is available in Eason and Blackthorn Gift Shop Killarney for €25 with money to help others undergoing chemotherapy. "There's definitely a message in the stories. It's all for a good cause. By buying the book you're helping someone." ed that the centre would move and were able to change some of the early season ‘home’ games to ‘away’ matches. “It is fantastic news, the senior and juvenile members can start playing again,” St Paul’s vice-chairman Padraig Weldon told the Killarney Advertiser. “There are only two venues that can cater for the crowds in Killarney and the Aura has always been our home.” Thanks to the club’s foresight, St Paul’s won’t play their first National League ‘home’ game until mid-November after agreeing with opponents to play the first few rounds on the road. However, and depending on how fast the HSE vacate the sports centre, the local team could play a Cup match as early as October 23 at home. Tasks like the dismantling of the vaccination booths and a full deep-clean of the premises will have to be completed by October 22.

Possible February extension for 'Safe Streets' programme | By Sean Moriarty Killarney’s Safe Streets programme could be further extended until February 28.
LATE LATE DATE: Liam O’Connor and Moya Brennan will perform on The Late Late Show tonight (Friday) where they will be joined by their respective children, Oisin and Saoirse O’Connor, and Aisling and Paul Jarvis. Missing from the photo is Cillian O’Connor who will also play on tonight’s show.
The ‘Safe Streets’ plan includes the permanent pedestrianisation of Plunkett St and Kenmare Place, the widening of several town centre footpaths resulting in the loss of about 50 car parking spaces. The measures were introduced by Killarney Municipal Council in July 2020 to allow ‘social distancing’ on the town’s streets as part of an effort to reopen the town following the first COVID-19 lockdown. It was further extended in September that year to allow for an anticipated
strong footfall and an increase in visitor numbers before and after Christmas. It was extended two more times this year, from the New Year until Easter in response to an increasing number of COVID-19 cases, and again from Easter until November to account for an anticipated busy tourist season. That plan could now be extended again until February 28 and Kerry County Council is inviting members of the public to lodge comments on the proposal. Submissions can be made in writing, marked ‘Road Closure’, with the Administrative Officer, Roads, Transportation and Marine Department, County Buildings, Tralee, or by email to roads@kerrycoco.ie not later than 5pm on Tuesday, October 19.
Talented musicians to play live on tonight's Late Late Show One of the country's top musicians, Killarney man Liam O’Connor, is set for an appearance on tonight’s Late Late Show which will set a unique record for the local accordion legend. | By Sean Moriarty Earlier this month Liam and his family Saoirse, Oisin and Cillian recorded a new single with Moya Brennan of ‘Clannad’ fame. Now the O’Connor and Brennan families have been invited to perform ‘Strong in Numbers’ live on tonight’s RTÉ One show. It will be Liam's seventh appearance on the national broadcaster’s flagship programme – the longest running TV chat show in the world. In the past he has worked with Gay Byrne and Pat Kenny, but this week’s show will mark his first time working with current presenter Ryan Tubridy meaning by the
time The Late Late Show airs tonight he will have worked with all three of the show's presenters. “I am sure other people have done it,” the world renowned accordion player told the Killarney Advertiser. “But it is a nice thing for me.” He and his family, along with members of Clannad, were due to spend this morning (Friday) rehearsing for the show. Other guests include Hollywood actor Ruth Negga, supermodel Rosanna Davison and former international soccer star Peter Schmeichel. Musical guests include Mick Flannery who has connections to Ballyhar and Susan O'Neill singing a duet called ‘Are We Free’, as well as Kodaline’s Steve Garrigan.

CHRISTMAS: Killarney will look its best again this Christmas thanks to funding from the Festival and Participative Events Programme 2021. Photo: Valerie O'Sullivan
Christmas is coming to Killarney early this year | By Sean Moriarty The organising committee of Christmas in Killarney received a timely pre-season boost after being included for funding under the Festival and Participative Events Programme 2021. The annual festival, which includes weekly street parades and extensive seasonal decorations in the town centre, traditionally runs from late November until the New Year. The full festival last ran in 2019 after the pandemic forced a scaled back version last year.
Under the programme, the festival will receive €2,169.25 from a total of €19,000 in funding that has been allocated to a range of Kerry festivals. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce welcomed the funding. “Christmas in Killarney is a very important festival for the town and the county,” Chamber President Niall Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser. “This funding goes with the contributions made by many businesses in the town to bring a welcome event to the town.” Further details of the 2021 Christmas in Killarney programme of events will be released in the next week or two.

Killarney hotel says a fond farewell to Mary This week, the team at Killarney Hotels Collection said goodbye to a long-term colleague and friend after many years of service to the collection of hotels. Mary Mulcahy began working at The Europe Hotel & Resort as a Senior Receptionist following her employment with Aer Lingus and progressed to Front Office Manager at The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens. In recent years, Mary moved to Ard na Sidhe Country House to assist with the daily running of the hotel with
friend and Hotel Manager, Debbie Brosnan. On Monday, colleagues organised a special presentation to say goodbye as well as raising a glass to her retirement. "Mary has been a wonderful asset to Killarney Hotels Collection over the years and was loved by her colleagues and customers alike," Michael Brennan, Managing Director Killarney Hotels Collection, said. "She is going to be missed by the whole team and we wish her the very best on her retirement."
CONGRATS: Denis Murphy from Murphy Brownes and Sinead McCarthy, General Manager in The Brehon Hotel are set to tie the knot after getting engaged.
It all started with a love of hospitality!
As the saying goes, "marry your best friend" - and that's just what one local couple plan to do as they got engaged this week. | By Michelle Crean Well known restaurateur Denis Murphy surprised The Brehon Hotel's General Manager Sinead McCarthy with a ring when he got down on one knee - leaving her completely speechless. Denis, who runs Murphy Brownes on High Street with friend and business partner Deirdre Browne, was on a staycation with Sinead when he made the surprise proposal. But it's been a long time coming for the best friends who have known each other since their college days. Both met studying hospitality in CIT in 2002 as they were on the same course. Then Denis took a summer position in the then newly opened Brehon Hotel while Sinead worked in The Plaza, and while here they shared a house in Woodlawn Road as friends. Then it was back to college for another while and the friends parted ways, Sinead working in various hotels around
the country over the next few years, and Denis on cruise ships. "When I'd come back home on holidays we'd always make a point of catching up," Denis told the Killarney Advertiser. Then it came full circle as seven years ago Sinead moved back to Killarney as Bar Manager in The Brehon and a year later Denis took up the role of Manager in The Grand. Once again the friends shared a house, this time in Bridgefield where they still live today, but after two years they realised they were more than just friends. "I proposed in Druid's Glen, I even had the bottle of champagne hiding in Sinead's car! And while people often say we finish each other's sentences I can proudly say the proposal, which included the help of the hotel staff, completely caught Sinead off guard!" He added that many customers only this week realised that himself and Deirdre are just good friends, and that she is still on the market!
BEST OF LUCK: Michael Brennan (Managing Director) and Adrian Stehr (Managing Director) wishing Mary Mulcahy the best of luck in her retirement.

National Blás award a sweet win for local honey producer Winning a major national food award after only two years in business is a sweet success for one Kilcummin honey producing family. | By Michelle Crean Tim and Kathleen Regan of Regan’s Family Apiary were awarded Silver by the Blás Na hEireann judges this week which is considered to the Oscars of the Irish food industry. Normally presented in Dingle, this year’s winners tuned in for a second year running from every corner of the country for a virtual celebration of the very best in Irish food. Products from every county in Ireland were entered into this year’s competition to win Gold, Silver or Bronze in over 150 food and drink categories, as well as key awards like Supreme Champion and Best Artisan Producer. According to Tim, who runs the artisan business with his wife Kathleen, with help from his son Liam and daughter Katy, the win is thanks to the bees! "It's down to the bees and the forage rather than the beekeeper," Tim told the Killarney Advertiser. "Good honey depends on three things, good weather, forage and the bees." The former St Brendan's College Science and Maths teach explained that they started out with two hives seven years ago but that has now grown to 20 plus hives. The bees feed on briars, clover and other flowers which gives their wild SILVER AWARD: Kathleen and Tim Regan of Regan’s Family Apiary are delighted to have won a Silver Blás na hEireann award this week.
flower honey its distinctive taste. "On average you can get 40 to 50 pounds of honey per hive, on a good year it could go up to 100 pounds per hive," Tim, who is currently Chair of the Kerry Beekeepers Association, added. "Last year we had 20 to 30 pounds as the weather was too cold and the clover didn't release the nectar as it needs to reach 20 plus degrees." At present the business runs from the family home in Inchicullane with an honesty table outside where customers can put the money in the box. They plan to sell online in time with the addition of candles, face creams and lip balms made from the honey. They're also planning a walking experience around the meadows to show how the honey is produced. The 12 other Blás winners announced were: Camos Artisan Foods (Gold and Silver), Cistin na hEireann (Gold), Dingle Distillery (Silver), Dingle Farm (Silver), Dingle Goats Cheese (Bronze), Kells Bay Cheese (Silver), Kennedy’s Butchers (Gold and Silver), Prestige Foods Ltd (Gold and Silver), Quinlan's Kerry Fish (Gold and Bronze), Valentia Island Vermouth Ltd. (Bronze), West of Dingle (Gold), Rogha na Gaeltachta (Best in County), supported by LEO Kerry, and Knockatee Natural Dairy (Gold).
SISTERS HELPING: Three sisters from Gneeveguilla, Rebecca, Ava and Ciara Knee, cut a total of 24 inches off their hair for charity.
Sisters are doing it for others | By Michelle Crean Not one, not even two, but three sisters were not "doin it for themselves" but instead for others - after donating a total of 24 inches of hair to charity. Proving that they each have a kind heart, Rebecca (10), Ava (8) and Ciara Knee (6) from Renasup, went for the big chop after being inspired by a friend. The girls, all pupils in Gneeveguilla National School, headed to Aileen's Hair Salon in Knocknagree where their regular hairdresser Noreen Brosnan got the scissors out for the hair transforming act of charity. And the idea for all three to take part in the charity act in aid of the Little Princess Trust was through Rebecca's friend Elaine McCarthy who got the chop for it last year. "Rebecca was going to do it last year as her best friend did it," the girls' mom Anita told the Killarney Advertiser. And when the girls heard about it they
all decided to do it and let their hair grow longer, however they waited until Ava's communion was over the Saturday before the big chop, she added. Third Class pupil Ava was up first followed by Fourth Class pupil Rebecca and finally it was First Class pupil Ciara's turn, watched on by their little brother Jamie (4). "Ava was first up, she was fierce excited altogether. Rebecca went next and was excited and nervous as she had longer hair but she said she should have cut more off! Ciara was delighted with herself as well after." Anita added that both herself and husband Ger are extremely proud of the girl's generosity. They even inspired Ava's friend Amelia Fleming who also got her hair cut for the charity last Wednesday and Rebecca's friend Elaine, who originally got the chop, to do it again! "They are privileged to be able to do it. They know it goes to someone who needs it. We're very proud of them."

NATIONAL AWARD: Radio Kerry producer Ivan Hurley is celebrating winning his first national broadcasting award.
Whitebridge radio producer wins national award
A Killarney radio producer is celebrating winning one of the biggest prizes in Irish broadcasting this week - a gold medal at the IMRO Radio Awards. | By Sean Moriarty Ivan Hurley, from Whitebridge, is a presenter and producer with Radio Kerry filling a number of roles in the music and sports departments. Every Monday evening he works behind the scenes on the station’s acclaimed sports show ‘Terrace Talk’. The show was awarded the gold medal at the IMRO Radio Awards in the 'Best Local/Regional Sports Programme' over the weekend for its programme celebrating the life of Kerry athlete Jerry Kiernan. The legendary marathon runner passed away in January this year and ‘Terrace Talk’ broadcasted a special tribute programme called ‘The Passing of Jerry Kiernan’. The winning entry comprised of friends, fellow competitors and family of the
late Jerry. During the show, presenter Eamon Hickson spoke to a number of people, including running legends John Tracey, Eamonn Coughlan, GAA star Jimmy Deenihan, Jerry’s former workmate in Dublin, Kilcummin born Donal Maher and Jerry’s son Paddy. Ivan’s job on the night was to ensure that the callers were directed to Hickson on time, and keep him in check in case the show ran over time and they missed a news or advert break. “It is a huge honour for the station, it has been a tough year and it was great to see some positivity after all that,” Ivan told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is my first national award too after five years in radio.” Radio Kerry, which has a studio on Glebe Lane, also took silver in the 'Local Radio Station of the Year' category in the virtual ceremony.
Hotel and guesthouses across the country have experienced an estimated €5.3 billion collapse in revenues across 2020 and 2021, according to figures from the IHF. Chair of the Irish Hotel Federation’s Kerry (IHF) branch Bernadette Randles says the supports are vital for the recovery of the sector and the wider tourism industry. Occupancy figures nationally are expected to reach just 32% for the year, compared to 73% for 2019. “As Ireland’s largest indigenous employer, tourism supported almost 270,000 livelihoods including 15,700 in Kerry prior to the pandemic. Our industry has been hardest hit by the restric-
tions, and the ensuing economic and financial impact of COVID-19 has been devastating. The Government supports so far have been critical, and a lifeline for many businesses, helping to restore employment and support the viability of businesses until we get back to a more stable footing. However, we need a firm commitment that they will be retained until the impact of the pandemic has passed. Tourism will recover, but it will take time,” she said. The IHF is also calling for the 9% tourism VAT rate to be retained until after 2025, to provide certainty and allow Irish tourism to compete internationally. “Our industry has a proven track record as a major contributor to the economy. Tourism’s recovery is just beginning. The pro-tourism Government measures introduced have been vital and with their continued support we can fully recover the ground we lost during the pandemic,” she added.
VITAL: Bernadette Randles, proprietor of The Dromhall Hotel, and Chair of the Irish Hotel Federation’s Kerry branch, says ongoing Government support is needed to help the hospitality industry. Four star status for the Gleneagle Hotel The team at The Gleneagle in Killarney are celebrating this week having received confirmation that the well-known hotel has been elevated to fourstar status by Fáilte Ireland.
News of The Gleneagle Hotel’s fourstar classification comes following an extensive refurbishment programme that cost in the region of €7.2 million and took over four years to complete. “The focus of our refurbishment programme was to improve our customer experience while retaining the magic
that makes The Gleneagle special. We are delighted this commitment has resulted in Faílte Ireland elevating the hotel to four-star status,” Gleneagle Group CEO, Patrick O’Donoghue, said. “As well as refurbishing our existing guestrooms and public spaces we completely renovated and refurbished a
wing of bedrooms that had not been used in decades, thereby increasing our capacity without increasing our building footprint. We also invested in our ongoing accessibility programme - seven of our guest rooms are now universally accessible while a number of upgrades around the hotel make the building easier to navigate and creates a more welcoming environment for all. “In tandem with the refurbishment programme, we have invested in our team through training and upskilling and in our technology by implementing new and better systems. The end goal has always been to improve the experience of our customers, achieving the fourstar classification is a very welcome bonus and testament to the hard work of all the team here.” The Gleneagle Hotel first opened its doors in 1957 as a small country house hotel. Today it is comprised of 279 guestrooms, a further 60 self-catering apartments and extensive leisure facilities. It is renowned for its programme of live entertainment and has three venues onsite – The Gleneagle INEC Arena, The Gleneagle INEC Club and The Gleneagle Ballroom.
Swiss Ambassador visits Killarney | By Sean Moriarty The Swiss ambassador who visited Killarney last week is to prepare a report on potential investment in the town and county. VISIT: Swiss Ambassador to Ireland, Louis-José Touron, and his wife Alyse met with Mayor of Killarney Marie Moloney, and Bernadette Randles, Chair of the Irish Hotel Federation’s Kerry branch.
During his two-day visit, Ambassador of Switzerland to Ireland, Louis-José Touron, met with the Mayor of Killarney, Marie Moloney, and Bernadette Randles who is Chair of the Irish Hotel Federation’s Kerry branch. Prior to his Killarney visit he met with
senior Kerry County Council officials including the Mayor of Tralee Johnnie Wall, the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council Jimmy Moloney, as well as Chief Executive Moira Murrell in Tralee. “Ambassador Touron was very impressed by the arguments put forward at both meetings about the availability of space, improvements in infrastructure, the skills of the workforce, and the presence of rail and air connections,” Cllr Moloney told the Killarney Advertiser. “He was also very interested in the tourism industry and what Killarney has
to offer by way of culture, festivals and amenities.” He also visited the Liebherr Container Cranes factory in Fossa. “The Ambassador's report to the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs is to be shared with the Swiss equivalent of Enterprise Ireland and this will inform their advice to Swiss companies seeking to expand into the EU. Though it will obviously take some time to trickle down, it is hoped it will have a positive impact in terms of attracting Swiss companies to Kerry,” Cllr Moloney added.

Legion and Dr Crokes face unprecedented relegation play off An unprecedented run of events on local Gaelic Football pitches is set to divide the entire town. | By Sean Moriarty The town’s two biggest senior football clubs could face each other in a relegation playoff that could condemn one of them to intermediate club football next season. The playoff match, which cannot be played until after the County Championship ends later this month or in early November, will spark intense rivalry across the entire town. Both teams finished bottom of their respective Club Championship groups. The relegation playoff will be played once both teams are eliminated from the separate County Championship. “Crokes getting relegated would be one of the biggest shocks in living memory, they have seven County Championship
titles between 2010 and 2018, plus an All-Ireland [club title] in 2017,” said the Killarney Advertiser's Sports Editor Adam Moynihan. “Legion have been senior since 2006 so their relegation would also be unexpected. The match also raises the prospect of Crokes or Legion joining East Kerry for the 2022 championship. Some people already think East Kerry are too strong.” However, there is a chance that the match won't be played at all. If either team reaches the final of the County Championship, the other will be relegated automatically. County Championship finalists are exempt from relegation but this exerts even greater pressure on both sides to reach the County Championship final.

Street banter has already started Fans of each club have already taken aim at their cross-town rivals as our roving reporter Grigoriy Geniyevskiy found out on this travels this week. Paudie O'Callaghan from the Fáilte Hotel, a Dr Crokes supporter said: "I'm slightly worried because a derby is always a tough game. I'm also slightly confident. It will be a huge setback if we get relegated. It will be a good match to look forward to for both teams." Meanwhile Gearoid Nagle who works in the Fáilte is a Legion supporter. Olympians “row-in” as goodwill ambassadors for mental health fest WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY
Killorglin's two Olympians have rowed-in with their support for the 2021 Kerry Mental Health & Well-being Fest by coming on board as ambassadors for the event. Taking place from tomorrow (Saturday) to next Saturday (October 16), Monika Dukarska and Aileen Crowley, who recently competed for Ireland in the rowing at the Tokyo Games, are asking people of all ages to get involved in the festival for the good of their mental health. The Kerry Mental Health and Well-being Fest aims to create awareness of, and schedule events that empower people to engage with, the Five Ways to Wellbeing – Connect | Give | Take Notice | Keep Learning | Be Active. Monika Dukarska said one of the Five Ways to Well-being was of particular benefit to her during her Olympic preparations. "When things were getting tough with selection or training sessions, I was journaling and writing down things that went well rather than putting pressure on myself constantly to perform. I was picking very small targets or things that I enjoyed about my day to detach from the pressure of performing all the time.

That worked for me superbly. It gave me things to enjoy that I wouldn’t necessarily have taken notice of before.” The Olympic Rowers, as women in sport, are delighted to see that many of the events during the Kerry Mental Health and Well-being Fest will be geared towards women and girls. "I can only see a workplace environment from a sporting perspective and I’m defi-
nitely aware that it is different for women, from what I’ve noticed in sport," Aileen Crowley, from Killorglin Rowing Club and Rowing Ireland, said. "So, to see female-specific events is fantastic because there is a difference, unfortunately, in most workplaces between men and women, and for kids from an early age up to adulthood, but that is starting to balance out.”
Organised by an interagency steering group, the Kerry Mental Health and Well-being Fest is held annually to highlight World Mental Health Day October 10. The organising committee is a collaboration between Connecting for Life Kerry, Healthy Kerry, Kerry County Council, the HSE, NEWKD, SKDP, Kerry Mental Health Association, Jigsaw Kerry, Munster Technological University/ Kerry, and Kerry Volunteer Centre. The Chair of the Steering Committee and Resource Officer for Suicide Prevention in Kerry, Donagh Hennebry, added that "well-being is when you’re feeling good and functioning well". "Our event ambassadors know that it’s not just about being in good physical condition, but it crucially includes the state of your mental health. We are grateful to Monika Dukarska and Aileen Crowley for sharing their knowledge and experience with everyone involved in the 2021 Kerry Mental Health and Well-being Fest.” Visit HealthyKerry.ie to see the full event schedule. All events are free, registration is required for some activities and can be done by contacting the organiser directly or use the registration links provided in the brochure.

Mass to remember those lost in the War of Independence
LETS GO: The Dingle Adventure Race team, Noel O'Leary, Ailise Deane, Colm Casey and Joe O'Leary that competed in Adventure Race World Championship in Gallaecia on Saturday.
O’Leary finishes world's toughest adventure race
Killarney mountain runner Joe O’Leary was part of a four person team that finished one of the world’s most arduous adventure races in Spain this week. | By Sean Moriarty The Dingle Adventure Race team, Noel O'Leary, Joe O'Leary, Colm Casey and Ailise Deane started the six-day race in Adventure Race World Championship in Gallaecia on Saturday. They only reached the finish line in the early hours of Thursday morning after enduring 220km of mountain trail hiking at heights of 7,500m, an 80km mountain bike race and an 11km kayak race in a river with currents so strong they had to carry their canoe along the river bank just to make the section-finish. They did all this while surviving on limited sleep taken on a short bus journey to connect sections and 17 minutes of open air sleeping on the side of a mountain in the middle of the night. “The 2021 World Championship will be the most mountainous, the longest and the most technical edition of our race so far, covering 600km across three of the four provinces of Gallaecia and passing very near to the border with Portugal,” explained a pre-event press release. “Teams can expect a varied and technical race delivered by a crew which has been together for many years and has a reputation second to none for their courses, logistics, mapping and organisation.”
START
At the event start, all teams were given 51 maps and had a limited time to plot the correct route via several pre-ordained check points. They were not allowed use modern GPS technology and one mobile phone was allowed per team, however this was
switched off and placed in a sealed bag and if the seal was broken they would have been disqualified from the race. A digital wrist watch, that showed no more than the time and a date was the team’s only connection to real time as smart watches and Fitbits were also banned. The course opened on Saturday morning and they had exactly seven days to complete it. Following a very difficult opening night, they spent 40 hours on a mountain side in driving rain, missed a cut off time at a check point and were forced to complete a stage by bus. While the bus trip offered much needed rest, Team Dingle Adventure Race were forced to drop down to the shorter course and were no longer eligible for overall honours. It was a cruel blow for the squad as they were the last team to be cut off. They continued with the Mountain Bike section but before they could participate in the kayaking element of the event they had to carry their boat through difficult mountain trails to reach the start of that section. The final section, 12km of street racing, was as difficult as the mountain courses they had just completed. “We got over the line at about 3am, there was one person there to clap us,” a clearly exhausted Joe told the Killarney Advertiser a few hours after the finish. “What day is it? I literally don’t know what happened over the last few days. I will be getting flashbacks about this for the next six months and it will take a long time to piece it all together. Right now I am drifting between back to life and being completely delirious from sleep depravation.”
To remember the past and the sacrifices made by the ordinary people of Ireland, a Mass of Commemoration for all those who died during the War of Independence will take place this Sunday. All are welcome to attend the service in Kilcummin Parish Church at 11.30am, followed by a short ceremony nearby at the Mass Rock in Rathanane, which is being organised by Kilcummin Historical Group. "As we draw near the end of 2021 let us take the time to reflect on the War of Independence," Conor Doolan, one of the organisers and author of ‘Kilcummin Folk, Land and Liberty: A Local History’, told the Killarney Advertiser. After the 1916 rebellion a swell of nationalist sentiment swept across the nation and as early 1917 Sinn Féin clubs appeared in Kilcummin. Due to the size of the parish it is divided into eastern and western jurisdictions, he added. "Around this time the Irish tricolour was raised at Anabla National School, a great act of defiance at the time. Pipe and Drum bands were popular and the Anabla Volunteers organised their own band and are cited as accompanying political demonstrations in Killarney town."
1919 ONWARDS
Likewise, Old IRA Company’s representing Kilcummin in the west and Anabla to the east were established, he explained. "The same can be said for the two Cumann na mBan branches in the parish. Marguerite Fleming from Milleen went on to be a significant national figure in Cumann na mBan but her contri-
bution to Irish freedom has been largely forgotten. By 1919 the British Army had commandeered the Great Southern Hotel thus transforming it into a barracks. It was predominantly occupied by the East Lancashire Regiment, Manchester Regiment and the Royal Fusiliers. Prior to that of course, the Royal Irish Constabulary were housed in a castle-like structure that stood where the Áras Phádraig is located today. New RIC recruits known as the ‘Black and Tans’ and ‘the Auxies’ arrived in 1920 wreaking havoc across the country."
FORGOTTEN
Volunteer Patrick McCarthy from College Street Killarney was accidentally wounded and died while on active service in Kilcummin. "It's also worth mentioning that Killarney man Sean O’Leary of Ballydribeen was a volunteer in the Tipperary IRA. Unarmed, O’Leary was killed by ‘the Auxies’ near Moneygall. What most people refer to as Flesk Bridge is in fact the ‘McCarthy-O’Leary’ Bridge, renamed by Kerry County Council in 1968. Two young English soldiers named Private Motley and Private Steer were killed near Anabla before the Truce in 1921. They were repatriated to Lancashire in 1927." Hannah Carey was the last person killed in the Irish War of Independence. On July 11, 1921 The RIC & Black and Tans were firing indiscriminately as they drove down College Street. Carey was struck by a stray bullet. She was going about her days work at the Imperial Hotel, now known as the Killarney Towers Hotel.
Listry litter volunteers clean up | By Sean Moriarty Volunteer litter pickers in the Listry area have noticed a significant decrease in the amount of rubbish they collect. Listry Community Council organises teams of litter pickers each September to coincide with the hedge cutting season. Each group clears litter from the roadside in the areas closest to their own homes. Collected rubbish is brought to Listry Community Centre were Kerry County Council staff arrange for its correct disposal. Listry Community Council’s chair Tony
Darmody said he and the volunteers had noticed a decrease in the amount of litter in the area but warned that there is still a substantial amount of rubbish gathered every week. “I thought the baby-boom was over as I wasn’t finding nappies on the side of the road,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I had no sooner thought that when I found two in a hedge.” He puts the decrease down to COVID-19 restrictions as there was less traffic on the roads and it was easier to recruit volunteers during lockdowns. “Chip cartons and takeaway packages remain the big ones,” he added. “Cigarette butts are another problem.”

Castlemaine Village Fair Day to be revived A revival of Castlemaine Fair Day will take place this Sunday in memory of the late John O’Donoghue with proceeds going to charity.

Peter Mark launches annual Pieta fundraiser
Kerry branches of Peter Mark salons are once again planning a number of fundraisers all in aid of suicide awareness charity Pieta. The Petermarkathon event, from October 10 to 30, takes place in Peter Mark salons each year across the October Bank Holiday weekend, and this year has been extended to mark the 60th anniversary of Peter Mark. Each Peter Mark salon across Kerry has been given the task of coming up with its own individual and unique way to raise money this year, so visitors to their local Peter Mark salon in Kerry can expect, sponsored walks, raffles, games in salon, and many other fun-filled events over the course of both weekends! All monies raised will go towards supporting the ongoing work of Pieta to provide life-saving services and help those in distress. Pieta provides professional one-to-one therapeutic service to people who are in suicidal distress, those who engage in self-harm, and those bereaved by suicide. Located in 20 locations across Ireland and employing over 200 therapists and support staff, all services are provided free of charge and no referral is needed. Since it opened its doors in 2006, the charity has seen and helped
over 60,000 people in suicidal distress or engaging in self-harm. "We are delighted to be raising funds for Pieta during our annual Petermarkathon as Peter Mark is 60-years-old this year," Liz Prendiville, Manager of the Peter Mark salon in Killarney told the Killarney Adveriser. "We are aiming to raise as much as we possibly can for such a worthy cause." Peter O’Rourke, CEO of Peter Mark, added that it's the 10th year of the Petermarkathon. "Over the last decade we are delighted to say that we have raised over €600,000 for Irish charities across the country. I am so proud of our team who put their heart and soul into this initiative every year and I know it’s a highlight on the Peter Mark calendar. To celebrate our 60th anniversary, this year we want to go bigger and better than ever. We have extended the event to run over three weeks and we look forward to raising as much money as possible to support the important work of Pieta across the country.” For more information on Pieta House, visit www.pieta.ie.
The location of the Sheep Fair will be in Griffin's Car Park and it will get underway from 10am. The event and its proceeds, organised by Castlemaine Events Committee, will be in aid of Kerry Hospice whilst there will also be an auction on the day where the donation of animals is welcome. Funds raised from the auction will go towards The Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) who provide exemplary care and attention to their patients. A raffle with some wonderful spot prizes will be on offer courtesy of sponsorship, and bucket collections will also be in operation throughout the event. John O’Donoghue who was known all over, resided in the heart of Castlemaine village. He was born on January 21, 1965 which ironically happened to coincide with a staging of the old Castlemaine Fair Day so it felt appropriate to mark John’s lifetime love of attending fairs and being an integral part of the farming community by bringing back the old fair day in his honour and with it celebrate old traditions, customs and beliefs in the locality. “The fair day was an annual event in Castlemaine but it died out in the '90s," John’s daughter, Cathy, said. "John loved to attend the fair days throughout the county and was well known as the custom of attending the fairs was passed onto John from his father Denis. Attending the fairs was not only enjoyable but also important to my father as he liked to keep up traditions." She added that both she and his good friend Pat O'Keeffe felt a fair day was a lovely way to celebrate John’s life whilst also raising money for Kerry Hospice due to his passion for farming. It was a huge shock to John, his family and friends when he was diagnosed with

terminal bowel cancer in May 2019. His life was cut short as seven months after that he died in the Palliative Care Unit on January 13, 2020. "Almost everyone has been affected by cancer in some way or another and are familiar with the Kerry Hospice in UHK. The care and support provided from the palliative care team was so amazing that it feels very right to give something back and I hope that we can raise as much money as possible on the day for such a wonderful service here in the heart of Kerry. It is great to have the Castlemaine Events Committee on board to help with the planning of the event. We are very lucky to have such a team in a small village." If this event runs successfully, she added, they would love to see it as an annual event. "Not only does it help raise money for the wonderful service of the Kerry Hospice it will also help keep my father’s memory alive.” All queries surrounding the fair day can be directed to Castlemaine Events Committee by contacting 087 2549116 and further information is also available on the committee’s Facebook page.

The Lighthouse
read Aisling and the city
RELEASED: TODAY (FRIDAY)
Author: Emer McLysaght
The Lighthouse is a 2019 film directed and produced by Robert Eggers, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Max Eggers. It was an international co-production of the United States and Canada, with the film being shot in black-and-white with a nearly square 1.19:1 aspect ratio. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson star as two lighthouse keepers who begin to descend into madness when a storm strands them on the remote island
Emer McLysaght is an Irish journalist and co-author of the Aisling series of novels. McLysaght and Breen co-created a comedic character named Aisling, establishing a Facebook fan group which grew to more than 45,000 members. As Aisling gained in popularity they were approached by publishers and decided to write a novel. As of 2021, the series consists of four books. Aisling is 31, and she’s still a complete Aisling. With BallyGoBrunch flying and the door firmly closed on her relationship with John, Aisling accepts an unexpected job offer and boards a business-class flight to New York in her best wrap dress and heels. As she finds her feet in the Big Apple, she throws herself into the dating game, grapples with ‘always-on’ work culture, forges and fights for new friendships and brings her good wedges to a party in the Hamptons, much to Sadhbh’s dismay. But catching up with family and friends on WhatsApp and email is not
where they are stationed. According to the director, although the final story bears little resemblance to Edgar Allan Poe’s fragment ‘The Light-House’, the film began as an attempt by his brother Max Eggers to create a contemporary take on the Poe story. When the project stalled, Robert offered to work with his brother, and the project evolved into a period thriller with the Poe elements largely removed.

BadBadNotGood Talk Memory ‘Talk Memory’ is the forthcoming album by Canadian instrumental group BadBadNotGood. It is to be released today (Friday) by XL Recordings and Innovative Leisure. It is the band’s fifth solo studio album and first in five years. A mostly improvisational work, it was written by the trio with contributions from featured American instrumentalists Laraaji, Karriem Riggins, Terrace Martin, and Brandee Younger, and string arrangements from Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai. The album functions as a barom-
the same as sitting in Maguire’s putting the world to rights over mini bottles of Pinot Greej and a shared bag of Taytos. And yet New York has so much to offer, not least in the fireman department.
eter for the band’s growth in the five interim years since their last album; besides the 2020 single ‘Goodbye Blue’, this is the first original release recorded after the sessions for IV. “It took a year or two of just living life to get to the place where the creative process was exciting again and once we actually went into the studio it was the most concise recording and writing process we’ve ever had,” the band said. “We hope that the improvised studio performances bring the listener closer to our live experience.”

Train for longevity and to maintain functionality When we talk about longevity, we are not just speaking on the quantity of life but also on the quality. Longevity encompasses our ability to move functionally throughout our lifetime. Ideally, we would want to be 80-years-old and still doing triathlons and hitting PR's. At the very least, we want to maintain our independence in seemingly simple tasks like carrying shopping, getting on and off the toilet, and playing with our kids/grandkids. Below, we have highlighted some training principles that aid in longevity: 1. Strength training There are many benefits to strength training at all stages of life. As we age, the development and maintenance of muscle mass become even more critical in counteracting illness, maintaining bone density, preventing falls, decreasing the rate of neuromuscular and balance deterioration, and improving overall well-being. 2. Avoid stress overload and overtraining It is essential to consider that exercise is a stressor that is perceived by the body the same way as the other stressors in our life. These outside stressors (financial, professional, physical, emotional) tend to be present in more significant amounts in adults, as most people have greater responsibilities during adulthood than during adolescence. From a physical standpoint and also due to these psychological stressors, most people will not be able to sustain the same volumes of exercise at 50-years-old that they sustained as a 20-year-old athlete. Therefore, when training for longevity, the intensity and frequency of sessions must be gauged with this in mind. 3. Emphasise mobility/working range of motion through all joints In addition to resistance training coupled with adequate recovery periods, mobility is an aspect of training that must be prioritised. Data has also shown that in terms of mobility, shoulder, trunk, and hip mobility, start to decline the most rapidly in the fourth and fifth decades of life. Because movement in these areas is critical for independence and functionality, mobility and strength through these areas must be emphasised and incorporated more heavily in training programmes as we age.
4. Focus in on the hips Do movements, preferably loaded ones, that involve some sort of hip hinge. This will translate into simple tasks we don’t think about like getting up off the ground and going from seated to standing and vice versa. This movement is critical for effortless tasks like bending over to tie our shoes, so this “hip hinge” pattern of movement should be trained often to ensure functionality throughout our lifetimes. Movements like the deadlift, kettlebell swing, and good mornings are exercises that work the hip hinge and require little technicality, while also translating seamlessly into daily movement patterns outside of the gym. 5. Move things Think: pushes, pulls, carries. These types of movements mimic the activities we do daily while simultaneously working midline stability (our core), muscular strength, and cardiovascular endurance. Farmers carry, prowler pushes, and sled work are great examples of these movements. Moving things from Point A to Point B is arguably one of most valuable indicators of functional movement and health, so training this in the gym is a valuable asset in terms of longevity. Think about walking: this is simple displacement but it is one of the first things to deteriorate as we age. Studies have shown that 31.7% of adults over the age of 65 report difficulty in walking over a kilometre. Key takeaway: At a certain point, when our life goals shift away from being a competitive or sport specific athlete, our training goals must also shift. Training for longevity is a direction in which we can shift our focus so that we can maintain functionality and quality of life as we age. Programming should include displacement under loads (just think pushing, pulling, or carrying heavy things as we move), coupled with strength and mobility work, especially through the hips. These training patterns, with the help of sufficient recovery time, will assist in our fluidity of movement as we age, and will increase the likelihood of us continuing to live a full and quality life when we are 80+ years-old. Activate runs a twice weekly ActivateMasters programme which pays particular attention to strength training for longevity. Visit www.activate.ie to find out more.
HAPPY TO CHAT: Paula McElligott, Sheila O'Sullivan and Noel Crowley sitting on one of the benches which have the new 'Happy to Chat' signs installed in Kenmare.
Kenmare locals are 'Happy to Chat' | By Michelle Crean
Kenmare locals are encouraging more human contact after installing a number of benches inviting strangers to stop for a chat. New 'Happy to Chat' bench signs have been installed in Kenmare in a joint venture with Kenmare Family Resource Centres Linkworker and Kenmare Tidy Towns. The four benches located in the town have been fitted with 'Happy to Chat' plaques in order to invite passers-by to stop and engage in a friendly chat with those sitting on the bench. "By providing a platform for people to support one another and offering genuine connection we can increase compassion and empathy, reduce the rate of loneliness and boost the level of healthy
conversation that happens in our community," Paula McElligott from Kenmare Family Resource Centre said. "Some people may go days or even weeks without the simplest of human contact, so the 'Chat Bench' seeks to break down that social barrier and allow us to all say "Hello". We hope the signs help break down the invisible social barriers that sometimes exist between people who are sharing the common space of a bench." Loneliness and isolation persist in Kenmare, despite a friendly and big-hearted community, so new approaches to encourage and facilitate engagement and interaction are required, now more than ever, Paula added. "The benches are an opportunity for us all to make a connection with someone new."

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPORT
KILLARNEY
INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY
Hundreds join March For Maternity at the Dáil Hundreds of parents, pregnant women and supporters gathered outside the Dáil on Wednesday for the 'March For Maternity' campaign to end the exclusion of partners from full labour and emergency care. A long scroll, containing stories of peoples' experience of being pregnant and giving birth was unrolled and held up by women politicians from all parties and members of the #BetterMaternityCare campaign group. Large signs were also held high calling on Health Minister Stephen Donnelly to honour his commitment to end partner restrictions in maternity care. The #BetterMaternityCare campaign, supported by Uplift who organised the rally, called for the Health Minister to meet with them to discuss the ongoing impacts of the restrictions. “The most frequent question I get asked is who's in charge?" campaigner Linda Kelly, who had her second baby during COVID-19, told the crowd gathered. "And the answer is simple - the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly is in charge. That's why we are here outside the gates of Leinster House, protesting in a pandemic so that our Minister for Health will hear us, recognise our lived experience and do his job - by ensuring that all 19 maternity units revert to pre-pandemic access for one nominated support partner.”
Missing man joins search party! A drunk Turkish man who had been reported missing "found himself" after unintentionally joining the search party set out to find him!
Campaigner Emma Carroll who had her first baby during the pandemic added “we stand here to call on Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, yet again, to immediately intervene and keep the promise he made many months ago to end maternity restrictions". Petition starter and #BetterMaternityCare campaigner Caroiline Cumming, who had her third baby earlier this year, spoke directly to partners saying “unlike in our maternity hospitals, we in fact think that you play a crucial role, you are
not a luxury, you are a necessity - and you are very welcome to be here today". Traveller activist and Senator Eileen Flynn, who had a baby just three weeks ago, sent a message to be read out at the rally. “Traveller women – and all women – need to know they’re being listened to across our maternity services. They need to know they’re being heard at every step. It can feel very patronising when you feel spoken down to, rather than spoken to.”
Beyhan Mutlu, who is living in Inegol in the northwestern province of Bursa, was reported missing last week. His family alerted authorities after he failed to return home from a drinking session with friends and didn’t return phone calls. Officials said Mr Mutlu (50), wandered into a forest and could not be found by his friends. A search party was dispatched to the area and Mr Mutlu ended up meeting them in the woods. Officials reportedly had no idea that Mr Mutlu was the man they were looking for and he joined the search party for several hours before “finding himself”. Reports say Mr Mutlu became aware that he was the one the search party was looking for after they began shouting his name. Authorities reportedly took a statement from Mr Mutlu before taking him home to his loved ones. It was unclear whether he faced any penalty.

First royal wedding in Russia in 100 years Russia's first royal wedding in almost a century took place on Friday. Descendants of the czarist Romanov family were married at St Petersburg, setting off a weekend of extravagant ceremonies that sparked popular interest, wonder, and contempt in equal measure. Grand Duke George Mikhailovich Romanov (40) tied the knot to his Italian wife, Victoria Romanovna Bettarini (39), in an Orthodox ceremony under the dome of St Isaac's Cathedral in Russia's old imperial capital city, in front of priests and several hundred guests. A decadent engagement ring which is "traditionally exchanged in the House of Romanov" was given to the bride. "The ring centres a ruby cabochon gemstone that represents love and nobility
and two diamonds that represent purity and strength." The Russian Orthodox Church's top official in St Petersburg, Metropolitan Varsonofy, blessed the ceremony. "It's a kind of imperial wedding. A remembrance of eternal Russia of sacred czars and patriarchs and church," nationalist philosopher Alexander Dugin said in an interview with NPR. "In an age of 'cancel culture', when everybody in the West tries to forget your own identity your own history Russia offers an alternative process," he added. "We are trying to return to our roots." Polls suggest that Russians have mixed feelings about the end of the empire. In a 2017 report by pollsters Levada, roughly 42 percent said the loss of the imperial status was “very great”, though a slightly greater said it was not.
Dingle Literary Festival launch programme of live events Writers and eager literary enthusiasts - including President of Ireland Michael D Higgins - will flock to the Dingle Peninsula this November for the most welcome return of the Dingle Literary Festival which celebrates writing in all its glorious formats. Building on the success of 2020, this year Dingle Lit from November 19 to 21 brings a hybrid programme of events, broadcasting live from the Díseart and will include literary chats from worldclass writers. President Michael D Higgins will discuss his most recent publication ‘Reclaiming the European Street’. In his collection of speeches on European themes, he points to a weakening of solidarity and rising inequalities and highlights the need to learn lessons from the past. In a further literary coup, Claire Keegan
will discuss her eagerly anticipated new novel ‘Small Things Like These’. Her previous award-winning collections received critical acclaim. Author and historian, Diarmaid Ferriter will discuss his new book ‘Between Two Hells’, a fascinating exploration of the Civil War and its impact upon Ireland and Irish politics in the following half-century. Singer songwriter Declan O’Rourke will chat about his debut novel 'The Pawnbroker’s Reward'. "We are so excited to bring literature and culture back to the venues, bars and streets of Dingle, to celebrate Ireland’s world-class writers and to welcome more from overseas to continue the online conversations we started in 2020," Festival Director, Sheila O’Reilly, said. A full festival programme is available on www.dinglelit.ie. Tickets went on sale on Wednesday.
The campaign was launched by Rory’s Stories comedian Rory O’Connor who will be taking part in the initiative by sleeping out in his garden with his family on October 15. Focus Ireland and Bord Gáis Energy aim to raise €1.5m on the night and with funds going towards services preventing families in Ireland from becoming homeless, whilst creating sustainable long-term solutions to homelessness in Ireland. To date the partnership has supported over 7,000 families and directly prevented 458 vulnerable families from becoming homeless. According to latest figures from Focus Ireland, 8,212 people are homeless in Ireland which includes 953 families and 2,189 children. COVID-19 has meant those experiencing homelessness were more vulnerable than ever, and consecutive lockdowns resulted in more families and children living together in crowded spaces for extended periods of time. Now as the country emerges from the pandemic and the temporary eviction bans and rent freezes are lifted, the numbers of people facing homelessness are on the rise. People across Ireland can get involved
in Shine A Light Night by signing up to sleep out at home on shinealight.focusireland.ie. On the same night, business leaders will be invited to sleep out at socially distanced events taking place across the country. “I am honoured to be taking part in this year’s Shine A Light Night to help raise funds for Focus Ireland," Rory O’Connor said. "Their services are so very vital to vulnerable families and individuals across the country and their efforts make a real difference to people’s lives. One night can really change a lifetime so I am urging everyone to show their support by signing up and sleeping out.”
Mega-comet headed to Earth According to a recent study released on the pre-print site arXiv. org, a massive comet - potentially the biggest ever observed - is barrelling towards the inner solar system. The comet, with an estimated arrival time of 10 years from now, is known as the Bernardinelli-Bernstein comet. It is at least 100 kilometres wide and approx. 1,000 times bigger than a typical comet.
It’s so large that astronomers previously mistook it for a dwarf planet. A closer analysis of the object revealed that it was moving rapidly through the Oort cloud, a vast scrapyard of icy rocks, billions of miles from Earth. The object appeared to be headed our way, and it even had a glowing tail or "coma" behind it, a clear indication of an icy comet approaching the relatively warm inner solar system. Over the next 10 years, researchers will have plenty of time to observe it. Comets from deep in the Oort cloud are expected to stay essentially unaltered since they were kicked away from the sun billions of years ago, getting a closer look at the rock might help scientists learn more about the chemical makeup of the early solar system. It'll be a once-in-a-lifetime brush with the early solar system, with millions of years separating the comet's next close approach from its following one.

Add heather for garden colour Nothing provides more reliable colour and interest throughout the winter months than heathers. A forgotten about group of plants, they have gotten a bad rep for overgrowing their welcome. It is true that if not looked after they become lanky, woody, brown, straggly and unsightly. The only reason heathers become ugly is because they need a severe trim after flowering every year. Miss a year and things start going wrong. After flowering, cut back all heathers to the point at which they started flowering. This does not really have to be done carefully, you can take a shears or even a hedge trimmer to them. This is the only attention they will need all year! Heathers fall into two groups, Calluna, and Erica. Callunas are lime tolerant and recognisable as such by their leaves and structure. The leaves are smooth and soft, and their growth is upright. Ericas do not tolerate lime, and their leaves are more like needles. They do not grow as tall as Calluna types, and their growth is horizontal more so than vertical. I think heathers look best in a designated bed as they compliment each other. Having said that, they also work really well as a border edging, especially Erica varieties as they tend to stay lower and have a nice round growth habit. I have Erica ‘Kramer’s Red’ along the driveway, in winter it blazes purple and in summer it is a nice dark green. Perfect! They are also ideal planted under roses as they provide a nice bit of interest in the winter. I have recently started adding them to mixed perennial beds too where I think they look great when all else has withered. Heathers are ideal for banks too, and will tolerate wind and fairly dry soil. Yes, I am a fan of
heathers! Some varieties to try are: Calluna ‘Silver Knight’, beautiful mauve flowers on silver foliage. C. ‘Dark Beauty’ – the deepest of burgundy flowers on rich green foliage, the most striking of all the dark flowered ones. C. ‘Wickwar Flame’, lavender flowers on golden foliage, good contrast. C. ‘Theresa’, pink buds on golden foliage – looks like it glows! C. ‘Helena’ white buds on bright green foliage, a welcome break from the pink colours. C. ‘Bonita’ has crimson buds on amber foliage, very pretty. Erica varieties: E. ‘St. Keverne’ has bright pink flowers early in the autumn, compact growth habit. E. ‘Darley Dale’ pink, but foliage has white tips in the spring. E. ‘Eva Gold’ pink flowers, golden foliage. E. ‘Furzey’ dark pink flowers, pink tips in spring. E. ‘White perfection', pure white flowers, E. ‘Moonshine', lime green foliage with pale pink flowers, E. ‘Saskia', masses of rose pink flowers clustered at the end of the shoots, very showy! There is a relatively new trend in Calluna types emerging, one of which sells under ‘the Girls’ range or ‘bud heathers'. These are usually two or three different colours in one pot. They are different plants put in together and I have noticed in the garden one colour usually takes over from the others. The problem with these is that if you are planting for pollinators they are useless as the buds do not open! They are also, in my experience, not very reliable repeat flowers. All heathers, except these bud heathers are excellent for pollinators. They provide much needed pollen in winter and spring, and it is a great idea to plant them near your apple trees and other fruit plants in order to get pollinators into the habit of visiting a certain area of your garden. All in all, there should be a spot for heather in anyone’s garden!

Remove dead cells at the deepest level Glycolic peels are amazing professional facials that use medical grade glycolic acid and salicylic acid combined to help remove dead cells to the deepest level. They really have amazing benefits from removing dull, damaged layers. It will also address skin concerns like hyperpigmentation, photoaging, scars, uneven skin tone, fine lines, wrinkles and helps clear up acne. A consultation is done before this treatment is started, to see what your main concerns are. It's tailored to suit each individual client. It's not a relaxing facial but more of a treatment that works on specific concerns. These are a great chemical peel for men's skin also. You do not shave or wax at least 48hrs before treatment and you should not expose your skin to UV light one week before treatment and one week after. The facial will start off with a cleansing and toning process, followed by the glycolic acid being applied to your face and neck with a brush. Your therapist will be wearing gloves. The glycolic is left to work from five to 15 minutes, however all skin types can take it at differ-
ent lengths of time. It may feel tingly or hot on the skin but it's completely safe. It's then neutralised and the steamer is applied to thicker skin types. This helps to really release the blackheads from the skin. They will be given an extra nudge to release them. Blackheads are usually characterised by red pimples in younger skin and caused by the inflammation of the sebaceous glands that may have a bacterial infection. Nobody likes the look of blackheads and this is a great facial to help remove them. This is why it is so important to wash your skin thoroughly at home, but be aware to remove all your facewash product also as this can cause problems in itself. People tend to be very good at washing the larger areas of their face, cheeks, neck and forehead, but simply miss the crevasses of the nose or under the bottom lip. So, if you're looking for an amazing results driven facial treatment this is defiantly the one for you and it's suitable for both men and women. For more information or to book an appointment please call Jill on 064 6632966.

Adapting a home for an older person or person with a disability QUESTION: I need to make some adaptions to my house as I am getting older and my mobility is not as good as it used to be. My spouse has a disability. How can I go about making the house more accessible and are there any financial supports to carry out this work? ANSWER: Some common altera-
tions that can help make your home more suitable for someone with a disability or limited mobility include: • Widening doorways and passageways • Moving light switches, door handles, doorbells and entry phones to convenient heights • Installing grab rails for support • Adapting bathroom facilities (for example, removing a bath and installing a level access shower) • Moving bathroom or bedroom facilities to the ground floor • Installing ramps to avoid using steps • Ensuring that external approaches such as paths or drives have a firm, level surface • Installing a stair-lift or through-floor lift • Getting specialised furniture, like an adjustable bed or high-support chairs • Installing alert devices for someone who is deaf or hard of hearing Before making changes to your home you should consult an occupational therapist (OT) who will assess your daily living needs and advise on adaptations to your home. You can contact an OT through the community care section of your Local Health Office. Alternatively, you may want to hire an OT privately, as there can be a waiting list for the public OT service. The Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland (AOTI) maintains a list of OTs in private practice, and if you get a grant for the adaptations you may be able to get back some of the costs of hiring the OT. Other health professionals, such as public health nurses and physiotherapists, can also advise you on specialised equipment and home adaptations, based on both your short-term and long-term needs. A Healthy Age Friendly Homes Coordinator can also provide information and advice on living independently, adapting your home or moving to a new home that is more suitable to your needs. Kerry County Council is one of the local authorities which is piloting this initiative. If you need to add a structure or an extra room, you may need to apply for planning permission. Adapting your home may be expensive, particularly if struc-
tural change is involved. There are several ways to reduce the financial burden: • You may be eligible for a means-tested Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability. The maximum grant is €30,000. • For smaller alterations, such as grab rails, exterior handrails or a stair-lift, the Mobility Aids Grant Scheme (also means-tested) provides a maximum grant of €6,000. • The means tested Housing Aid for Older Persons Scheme is used to improve the condition of an older person's home. The type of work that is covered depends on your local authority and may include structural repairs, re-wiring and upgrades to heating systems. For information on what is covered in your area, contact Kerry County Council • You may qualify for a local authority home improvement loan to improve, repair or extend your home. • If you have a medical card or a longterm illness card, you may be entitled to get essential items of equipment free of charge. First, you must be assessed by a relevant professional, such as an occupational therapist or a physiotherapist. • If you are paying for equipment needed for someone with a disability, you may be able to claim a VAT refund. • Depending on the work being done, you may be eligible for the Better Energy Warmer Homes Scheme or the Better Energy Homes Scheme. Know Your Rights has been compiled by Citizens Information Kerry which provides a free and confidential service to the public. If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information Service in Kerry on 076 1 07 7860. They will be happy to assist you and if necessary arrange an appointment for you. The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Coyne makes surprise entry to Irish season finale Kevin Coyne will bring his motorcycle racing season to a close in Ireland this weekend after making a surprise entry to the final round of the Irish championship. The Farranfore racer has spent the year in Britain where he was racing in the National Superstock class on his Kawasaki Ninja as part of the British Superbike Championship (BSB). The previous season was also spent in the UK in the National Junior series, another category that supports the major BSB races. However, he has decided to skip next weekend’s final British meeting of 2021 at Brands Hatch and instead contest the final round of the Dunlop Irish Masters Championship at Mondello Park in Coun-
ty Kildare on Saturday and Sunday. It will be his first time racing on home soil since 2019 and he has entered the Supersport class where he will face Irish frontrunners like West Limerick’s Andrew Murphy and Cork’s Jamie Collins. Both riders are frontrunners in the class with Murphy aiming for second overall in the Pro sub-category and Collins aiming for victory in the Cup sub-category having already won the class in the Ulster Superbike Championship. Coyne's main mission this weekend is to see how he measures up against Irish riders after two seasons abroad. “We just wanted to finish our year in Ireland,” his father Mark said. “It will be nice to be back in Mondello after such a long time.”
RETURN TO IRELAND: Kevin Coyne will race in Ireland this weekend for the first time since 2019 after spending the last two years competing in Britain.

Nagle ready for WRC title fight after Ford switch Killarney World Rally Championship co-driver Paul Nagle is “hungry for victories" and is ready to “fight for the title” after signing a two-year deal with the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team for the next two years. The Aghadoe man and his driver Craig Breen will lead the Cumbria-based squad for the next two seasons and at a pivotal time in the WRC as the sport enters a new Hybrid era. The pair will drive the all-new Ford Puma Rally1 car, beginning with next January’s iconic Rallye Monte Carlo. It will mark Breen’s first full assault on the championship, having being employed in the past on a part-time basis by Citroen and more recently Hyundai. For Nagle, it will mark the return of a full-
time seat in the series for the first time since 2017 when he partnered Tyrone’s Kris Meeke. The pair recorded five wins for Citroen in a three year period from 2015 to 2017. Breen and Nagle have scored several WRC podiums together, including a wellearned third place on last weekend’s Rally Finland. However, they were only on a part-time programme with Hyundai and the move this week to Ford will allow them to challenge for victories and have a shot at the overall title. Nagle believes they have the potential to challenge for the sport’s greatest honour. "I’m really excited to be involved with the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team as we enter the new Hybrid era of the World Rally Championship. I have

worked with many teams in my time in the WRC but always wanted to join the Ford family,” said Nagle. “The team at M-Sport has a track record of producing some of the best rally cars and I’m sure 2022 will be no exception. Both Craig and I are hungry for victories
and to fight for the World Rally Championship title, we will be giving it our very best.” Their deal was announced on Wednesday and they will test their new car in Spain later this month, after which preparations will begin in earnest for the new season.

NEWS BRIEFS... Killarney clubs invited to apply for funding Sports clubs in Killarney and beyond are being invited to apply for funding in this year's Texaco Support for Sport. It's open to sports clubs irrespective of sporting discipline, size, membership, age, cultural appeal or gender – including clubs that may have made an unsuccessful application previously. The initiative sees a fund of €130,000 being set aside for distribution to sports clubs on a 26 county-by-county basis. Last year, the successful county winner to receive a €5,000 award was Inter Kenmare Football Club. Information and rules governing the operation of the scheme can be viewed online at www.TexacoSupportforSport.com, the most important requirement being that applicant clubs be properly constituted and hold a valid Games & Sports Number (GS Number) issued by the Office of the Revenue Commissioners and featured on a recent list published by them on June 30, 2021. Applications are open from now until December 31. Adjudication will take place in January 2022.

12TH & 8TH ANNIVERSARY CRONIN
In loving memory of our parents Danny and Josie Cronin late of Muckross, Killarney Danny who died 6th September 2009 Josie who died 5th October 2013. Don’t think of them as gone away There journey’s just begun Life holds so many facets this earth is only one. Just think of them as resting from the sorrows and the tears In a place of warmth and comfort where there are no days and years. Think how they must be wishing that we could know today How nothing but our sadness can really pass away.
I know that heaven called you but I wish you could have stayed At least the memories I have of you they will never fade.
And think of them as living In the hearts of those they touched For nothing loved is ever lost And they were loved so much.
I did not want to lose you but you did not go alone A part of me went with you when Heaven called you home.
No matter how life changes No matter what we do A special place within our hearts Is always kept for ye both.
So just remember one thing we are not apart You are with me in my memories and in my broken heart.
Rest In Peace Always loved and remembered by your Children and their Families.

Killarney hoopers ready for long-awaited tip-off After a frustrating year-and-a-half of inactivity due to COVID-19, Killarney’s two Men’s National League teams will finally take to the floor this weekend as the race for the 2021/22 Division 1 title gets underway across the country.

While other sports have gone ahead intermittently in 2020 and 2021, and most have been back in full swing for a number of months now, basketballers in Ireland have been forced to sit on the sidelines throughout the pandemic. This has been due to stricter guidelines when it comes to indoor activities but with those restrictions now (hopefully) a thing of the past, it’s time to play some basketball. It promises to be a very interesting sea-
son indeed for Killarney basketball fans, who now have two teams to follow at National League level. It is a remarkable turn of events considering the fact that in the not too distant past we had no teams at all competing at this level. More learned observers than this journalist have questioned whether or not a town of Killarney’s size can maintain two National League teams. Well, readers, we’re about to find out.

COUGARS
Let’s start with the new kids on the block. We say “new” but in reality many of the Killarney Cougars players will be very familiar to local sports fans, and even more familiar to their crosstown rivals. x Greene (pictured), Justin Tuason, Mark Andy Fitzgerald and other squad members have previously represented the Lakers in the National League, a fact that is sure to add some extra spice to the December 30 fixture between the two town clubs. The 2020/21 campaign was meant to be the Cougars’ first at national level but COVID put paid to those plans. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, Greene said he and his teammates can’t wait to get out on the court. “We’re very excited to finally get going,” the Killarney native said. “We had a long time off the court – I think we had around four weeks of proper training last year – so it’s great that the new season is starting now on Saturday.” Basketball seemed to take a back seat in the public discourse around the resumption of sporting activities but Greene is not surprised. Like other Irish basketball players, he has grown accustomed to his chosen sport playing second fiddle to the big-hitters. “We all know that soccer and the GAA are going to take precedent. They’re more professional and more popular in this country, and they’re outdoor as well which helps with the COVID restrictions. With the nature of basketball being indoors and close contact, it’s always going to be bottom of the pile. Especially, as I said, with the popularity of it as well. It hasn’t been too frustrating from that point of view because it was to be expected.”
Under the guidance of experienced head coach Ignas Sijanas, the Cougars, who will play their home games in the Pres Gym, have assembled a decent-looking squad. It’s one that Greene feels is capable of being competitive at the second highest level of Irish basketball, although he is still hopeful that they can bring in a couple more players to bolster their roster. “We’d probably want one or two more bodies,” he admitted. “We have four or five guys on the fringes, we don’t know if they’re coming with us or not, and we could do with one or two of them to get a nice rotation going. But we’re not too bad. We’ll be competitive anyway. “Mark O’Shea is after joining from Ballincollig, he’s looking very good. Conor Flynn has joined from Killorglin. Con O’Mahoney is coming in from Farranfore, we’re expecting good minutes from him. Billy Wiseman is there to give Andy a break. And Jack Lynch is looking like a promising young player as well. “We want to see if this project can work: building a solid foundation with local players, not being heavily reliant on imports. Let’s see if we can get some good results, be competitive and maybe that fourth spot (the final qualification spot from the southern conference) won’t be a million miles away. I think UL, Mathews and Demons look like shoo-ins on paper anyway, so I think that fourth spot could be between ourselves, Paul’s (Lakers), Portlaoise… That could be in the sights.”
LAKERS
Although they are now facing into their fourth season back in the big leagues, the Scotts Lakers are also heading into uncharted waters. They have a new coach in Jarlath Lee and a young roster that is virtually unrecognisable from the

last time they took to the court for an official game. That being said, they certainly have plenty of talent at their disposal. Local lads Mark O’Shea and Dylan O’Sullivan will be joined by former St Paul’s Super League player Dainius Varanauskas, 6’5” Bulgarian Emilian Grudov, and Canadian point guard Ben Miller, who has returned to the club having initially signed up for the abandoned 2020/21 season. Miller says the initial set-back of missing out on his first season in Irish basketball due to COVID was a “little frustrating”, xbut he is now ready to lead the Lakers to a run at the playoffs. “I think our goal is to be at the top of the league, or at least in the top couple of spots. I know we’re a bit younger (as a squad), but I think that will be a realistic goal for us.
“We’re filling in some pieces now and adding a bit more depth. The squad is shaping up pretty well. Our young players have a lot of talent and a lot of potential. They’re really willing to learn and work at the game; it’s been fun meeting them and trying to teach them a thing or two.” Miller will be the team’s primary ball carrier and he hopes he can use all his experience to propel the Lakers to a successful season. “I hope to be a steady, consistent player who shares the ball with everyone and does what it takes to get wins.” This year the Lakers will return to the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre with their first home game coming on November 13 against UCC Blue Demons. The side’s opening fixture sees them take on LIT away on Saturday.

Jack’s Kerry can As Jack O’Connor is officially ratified as Kerry manager on a two-year term, Eamonn Fitzgerald speculates as to how the side will change under his leadership
O'Connor will look for other players and not just those who came through the Kerry development squads. BACK AGAIN: Kerry manager Jack O'Connor takes to the field in the Fitzgerald Stadium for the 2012 qualifier against Tyrone. Pic: Diarmuid Greene/Sportsfile.
So, Jack is back in charge of the Kerry senior football team for the third time. Ever since Kerry were knocked out of the race for Sam by Tyrone, rumours abounded about the identity of the Kerry manager going forward to 2022. The worst kept secret that Jack O’Connor would return was officially copper-fastened at the virtual meeting of the Kerry County Board on Monday night last. A huge number of delegates (111) logged in. There were some voices of dissent for the way Keane was treated, but chairman Tim Murphy handled the ratification very well, concluding with a valedictory statement thanking Peter Keane for his great service. The outgoing manager was keen to continue for another term and very sensibly kept his powder dry by making no public statements. That was until last week when he launched a well-primed grenade into the topic for discussion that has engaged Kerry supporters these past few weeks. He issued a statement indicating that he had the support of the players. There was no doubt that he was very annoyed that the County Board would not let him continue, citing the reality that they were so close to winning Sam, especially this year when they lost out to Tyrone by a single point in extra time and also in 2019. “I know the players very much wanted us to continue with our project,” Keane wrote. “They were the reason I wanted to stay. We were a united Kerry team with a great sense of purpose and ambition. It’s most disappointing that their wishes do not appear to have been considered in the decision-making process.” Did all or some of them contact the Big 5, and if so were their wishes taken seriously? Much done; more to do for the unlucky Peter Keane. If he had won just one All-Ireland, he would be hailed a hero. Win and all is forgiven, lose and all you get is a P45, surplus to requirements and no redundancy package. The Big 5 had made up their minds, not choosing Keane nor the Stephen Stack group. Crucially, the Kerry County Board

bring Sam home (and its representatives) knew that the Kerry supporters were hugely disappointed with the failures of the past seven years (not all Keane’s fault). It is important for the County Board that the clubs and supporters are happy. If you win Sam, it makes it so much easier to deal with the everyday issues in the running of the board. As for success in the intercounty hurling stakes, it would be nice to have, but not essential. After all hurling was, is and will be of secondary importance in Kerry GAA circles. The key factor in their decision was Jack’s proven record. He has done it at All-Ireland colleges level with Coláiste na Sceilge, and then at minor and U21 levels. Critically, he has managed to bring Sam home on three occasions. The Big 5 could not take that lightly. After his very public statement indicating that he wanted the job, and his resignation from his post in Kildare (even though he had already committed to them for another year), the Kerry gig was near to a done deal. He had done a good job with Kildare, but his hasty departure left a bitter taste. They moved quickly, appointing Glenn Ryan as manager for the second time. There were smoke screen excuses as to why Jack quit Kildare, such as the long drive from St Finan’s Bay to Kildare. That mileage didn’t bother him for two years... Kerry was the job he wanted, knowing that Peter Keane was so unlucky not to lift the canister on each of his three years in charge. Jack would not win an All-Ireland with Kildare, while the players are in Kerry to do that. The five minor All-Irelands in a row are now producing the players at senior level.
NEW CHAIRMAN
What’s more, the relationship between the manager and the chairman of the County Board at a business level and at a personal level is a crucial factor in achieving success. In this case, there is only one criteria for judging success in Kerry. Bring back the Sam Maguire ASAP. Seven years without it is too long. Tim Murphy will have to retire as chairman of the Kerry County Board at the annual convention next month, having completed the five-year term. Eamonn Whelan, the current vice-chairman from the St Senan’s club, is the racing certainty to take over. He will be unopposed, even though some contenders are testing the mood of the county for a contest. All unofficial of course; the

phone is a mighty communicator. With Jack as manager and Eamonn Whelan as chairman, you will have readymade partnership. After all, Jack had him as selector in the past. As outlined here last week, Jack will be his own man. He has chosen Micheál Quirke and Diarmuid Murphy, two proven men, for his management team and is waiting on Tally, the former manager of Down. Obviously, no place for Donie Buckley.
THE BOSS
Nowadays county teams are all about managers, the central figures in county teams. For so many decades the main person was the trainer, who did just that: train the team. He was also a member of the selection committee. For some years now, the boss manages the team and is the most influential member of the selection committee. He doesn’t even train the team. The manger has an ever-expanding retinue of specialists employed. Dublin invested very heavily in employing experts and money was no object while they continued to win Sam six years in a row. They were supported by trainers, S&C coaches, physios, doctors, nutritionists, psychologists, masseurs, people with basketball expertise, motivational experts and more. This expertise doesn’t come cheaply. Jack will beef up his management team
to maximise the opportunities to win back the Sam Maguire. I have highlighted the potential of this Kerry team. They should now be in their prime years, but success was not possible with the leakage of so many goals. The forwards are great but if you are leaking goals, defeat is very much on the cards. Specifically, the central spine of the defence has been porous. In his first year, Peter Keane was very unfortunate to lose out to Dublin. Who will ever forget Eoin Murchan, the Dublin back, sprinting though the middle of the Kerry team in the 2019 All Ireland final and not a Kerry player minding the gap? Kerry need a centre back and a full back who will provide the central function of the number 3 and 6 positions. Numero Uno: close off those central areas preventing Murchan and so many more unhinging the Kerry defence with the ball ending in the net.
MIDFIELD
Midfield must also be strengthened. David Moran has given outstanding service to Kerry over a long period, but this man came back from two cruciate injuries, which can be career-ending for players at such a high level. He still gave it his all this year but, going forward, it is hard to expect this player in his thirties to play the modern game with its demands. Diarmuid O’Connor is an obvious choice for midfield, but he needs
a better partner than Jack Barry, his clubmate from Na Gaeil. Jack will certainly look at former Kerry minor and U20 star Stefan Okunbor who has left AFL side Geelong Cats and has returned to his club (Na Gaeil). He will be available for Kerry and may well be coached into filling in at full back or centre back. It isn’t quite as simple as that, coming home from AFL and slotting seamlessly into the new Kerry set-up. I have seen so many players returning from the rigours of the AFL with injuries that militate against their hopes of starring in Irish football. It is an option for Jack, but the real bonus would be if he could coax Mark O’Connor back from the AFL. He has about 40 players from Peter Keane’s panel, but he will look for other players and not just those who came through the Kerry development squads. Late developers often make the grade at senior intercounty level. You can expect this when he announces the new Kerry squad. He will be working closely with Declan O’Sullivan, the Kerry U20 boss and his fellow clubmate, to work with the players. No salmon should escape the net trawled by the Dromid Pearses pair. (Isn’t it a remarkable achievement that the two top managers in Kerry football come from a small club in South Kerry?) Will he pluck a new Kieran Donaghy out of the magic hat, or reinvent some of the present Kerry players in new roles? Jack will do it his own way and so he should. After all he is the boss and will be judged on one thing and one thing only: winning the Sam Maguire.
STYLE OF FOOTBALL
I will be particularly interested to see what style of football he will produce over the next three years. One can expect the traditional, attractive, open style of Kerry, based on the premise that one can propel the ball much further with a kick pass than with several hand passes. He will be adding steel to their play, but hopefully not the worst elements of the northern teams (living on the edge of the rule book and the dreadful storming tactics). He will have a game plan (Plan A and Plan B) and Kerry will be in good shape to bring the Sam Maguire back to Kerry. After all, the Irish Independent survey places Kerry in the number two spot, just behind Tyrone and ahead of Mayo. Dublin are back in fourth place. Jack is centre stage in the bid to recapture Sam. I wish him well.

OPINION WEEKLY SPORT
Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues
In defence of the county board…
As Tim Murphy patiently waited for some of the delegates to put themselves on mute, he didn’t look entirely comfortable in his seat. Monday’s County Board meeting was about to begin via Zoom (once the background noise had ceased), and the Kerry GAA chair knew what was coming. The manner in which he and his fellow officers had handled the recruitment process to find the “next” Kerry manager had been criticised in certain quarters. The Brosna native was about to get it in the neck. Sitting in the pavilion in Austin Stack Park with just Peter Twiss (secretary) and Leona Twiss (PRO) for company, Murphy invited and then noted a string of questions and concerns from eight representatives. The words “transparency”, “bias”, “unfair treatment” and “mishandled” came up more than once. One delegate spoke of being contacted by people who are “very unhappy and annoyed” at the way the situation played
out. Another referenced a report on Off The Ball in which “sources” had claimed that Jack O’Connor had sewn up the gig before the others (Keane and Stephen Stack) had even interviewed. The fact that many of the concerns and most of the criticism came from clubs associated with Peter Keane or his selectors is worth noting. St Mary’s (Keane and Maurice Fitzgerald’s home club), Listry (where Keane lives), Laune Rangers (from Killorglin, where Keane has his business), Beaufort (a team Keane was previously involved with), and Kilcummin (James Foley’s club) all had their say. That’s not to say that their concerns weren’t genuine, but it does appear to indicate that the old GAA mantra of “looking after our own” was at play. More telling was the fact that the vast majority of clubs in the county raised no
concerns at all. Nevertheless, Murphy had to field the questions that were asked and he did so quite well. He stood over everything he and his five-person sub-committee had done and he bristled at the suggestion that there was anything untoward about the process. “This suggestion about it being a done deal going back three weeks ago or four weeks ago is totally erroneous, totally untrue, totally unfounded,” he said. “I think it’s disgraceful. It’s the lowest of the low.” After he had addressed everyone’s concerns, Jack O’Connor was ratified without so much as a peep of dissent from anyone. That probably shows you where the majority of clubs really stand on this whole episode. I, for one, think the County Board have been unfairly criticised over the past few weeks. (And readers of this column will know that I wouldn’t be one for praising boards or administrators for the sake of an easy life.)
DAY 1: Kerry GAA chair Tim Murphy with Peter Keane in the Fitzgerald Stadium before Kerry v Tyrone in 2019, Keane's first game in charge. Pic: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile.
The interview process was a smart way to go - there were doubts about Keane and there were no obvious alternatives. If Keane didn’t end up getting the job, it was always going to get a bit messy, but that’s life. And that’s Kerry football. As Murphy suggested, the circus was created by the media and by fans. Not thanking Peter Keane ahead of O’Connor’s ratification irked many observers (Murphy did so after O’Connor was officially appointed) and maybe that could have happened a bit earlier. For his part, though, Keane didn’t help matters with his statement claiming that “all the players” were behind him - that muddied the waters for sure. It was a crazy thing to say. No manager in the world has that kind of support, and Keane absolutely did not. All in all, Murphy came out of the meeting largely unscathed. His five years are up in December. He will be hoping that this was the last controversy of his tenure.

MEK Galaxy U12 BOYS DIVISION ONE: MEK Galaxy Orange 6 Killorglin AFC 1. Our U12s played their opening game of the season on Saturday, on what was a fresh autumnal morning in Fossa. The home side were quick to settle, and Eoin Casey put MEK 1-0 up with just five minutes on the clock. He added a second shortly after with a neat finish. Galaxy kept the pressure on the Killorglin goal, with the away keeper producing a string of fine saves. Jamie Murphy made it 3-0 midway through the half with a fine strike. Casey completed his hat trick in the 20th minute to make it 4-0, and just before the break Brendan Allman pounced to make it 5-0. After the interval it was Killorglin’s turn to threaten, and they got one back early on. MEK got a foothold once more, and with ten minutes to play Shane O’Neill completed the scoring. The following warriors did battle for MEK on the day: Conor McKeown, Dara Tangney, Donnacha Vaughan, Brendan Allman, Nathan O’Sullivan, Jamie Murphy, Eoin Casey, Cade Jameson, Harry O’Mahony, Shane O’Neill, Joe Stephens, Gerry Moroney, Tomás Lynch.
