Editor’s View

Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking

Why Shouldn’t Killarney Become A Financial Hub?

IN A FEW weeks’ time, expressions of interest will be sought in relation to the future use of the Pretty Polly site in Killarney. It got us thinking – what about establishing it as a centre for a financial hub in the town? Brexit is pushing Dublin up in global financial hub rankings. But why should the capital be the only centre to benefit? Since the UK voted to leave the European Union, Britain’s many financial firms have explored moving headquarters or setting up new subsidiaries elsewhere to keep a foothold in the EU’s single market.

Killarney is perfectly placed to entice financial industry post-Brexit Why shouldn’t Killarney present itself as a contender in the battle between European cities to lure banks, insur-

ers and other finance-related industries? Dublin is well positioned to attract Brexit-related relocations for several reasons, including that it’s a short flight from London, shares the same language, and levies some of the lowest tax rates in the Europe. Yet with a bit of foresight Killarney should surely be just as enviable a location. We have one of the best conference locations in Ireland and in addition, we are an hour from Cork Airport, and hour and a half’s drive from Shannon Airport and just fifteen minutes from Kerry Airport.

And while we complain about our property prices, they are far, far less expensive than those in Dublin or London. So why shouldn’t Killarney entice some of the financial service companies post-Brexit? Killarney has the transport routes, conference facilities and accommodation to service international services industries. So, come on, and let’s think big. Why not put together a professional working group to target sectors such as these? We need a single-minded independent commission-based project to drive this forward.

Why Wasn’t Pretty Polly Used To Drive Industry? DURING the boom years the former Pretty Polly site, a prime commercial location in Killarney, has lain idle – forcing start-ups and small businesses to look elsewhere. But we have been promised by Kerry County Council that the site will be progressed further in 2017. It’s long been regarded as something of a white elephant so rumblings that progress will at last be made

are very welcome. It’s high time something is done about this facility. The situation to date has been ridiculous as industry was forced out of town because Killarney had nothing to offer. A Killarney businessman said: “We struggled to find a location in Killarney to establish our company. We looked at other locations that had availability but were

adamant about staying in Killarney – other start-ups or small businesses may not have our desire to stay and fight to find a location and many upped sticks to expand in more favourable environments,” he said. Unlike Tralee, Killarney has never been an industry-receptive location but diversification should be on everyone’s mind rather than our town being dependent on one source of industry.

Killarney Still On Top But Tralee Told To Do Better

THERE was welcome news for Killarney this week as it was deemed topnotch in a leading litter survey – but our county town was given a less glowing report card. The study was carried out by the group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) which showed Killarney is among the top ten cleanest towns in Ireland. Killarney finished eighth out of forty towns and cities surveys and was deemed “cleaner than European norms”. The An Taisce report for Killarney stated: “Killarney improved to a top ten position at a time of year when it needs to show its best side to the many tourists visiting.” The survey gave nine out of the ten sites top marks. There was bad news for our county

town, as Tralee slipped to “moderately littered” in 33rd position in the ranking of 40 towns and cities. IBAL placed Killarney in 12th position earlier this year so to jump four places is definitely a feather in our cap. “This result reflects the efforts of the Killarney Municipal District management and staff and all the Killarney Tidy Towns volunteers,” said Killarney Tidy Towns committee member Johnny McGuire. But there is no room for complacency. “We need to redouble our efforts now – particularly the private sector – and make sure that litter, including cigarette butts and chewing gum, are picked up,” said Johnny. “The IBAL judges will be around again between now and Christmas to see that everything is in order.”

Killarney Makes The Grade Report Card

College Street: Grade A Overall, College Street scored well with regard to litter. The footpath surfaces varied quite considerably – some parts of the paving were definitely much fresher than others. Lewis Road: Grade A Road surface, signage and markings were in good order, with the footpaths in less good

order – somewhat cracked and uneven. Main Street: Grade A The Main Street was excellent. The very wide paving (with attractive slabs underfoot) creates a great sense of space. Muckross House: Grade A The approach and area immediately surrounding the entrance to Muckross House was excellent. New Street: Grade A Many of the

buildings along this street were brightly painted. The paving was in good order. There were no major litter issues but cigarette butts were definitely a feature throughout. Bottle Bank in Main Street car park: Grade A The bin units at this facility were fresh, with clear signage on the front of each one. There were some sticker notices indicating that the bottle bank is regularly monitored by CCTV. Derelict Site at Park Road Commer-

cial Park: Grade C This was quite a poor site in an otherwise well presented and maintained commercial park. Jarvey Park: Grade A This is a very well managed green space in the centre of Killarney used by the ‘Jarveys’ as a ‘taxi’ area. Approach from Skibbereen: Grade A The overall appearance of this road was a very good one. Approach Road from Cork: Grade A This was a very good route, with a virtual absence of litter.

Social Media Posting Leads To Boy Racer Investigation

Motorsport Wins Words: Cormac Casey

THE negative public perception that “boy racers” are part of the motorsport or car enthusiast community is so far from the truth. This perception has cast a shadow over professionally run motorsport events in recent years purely by “guilt by association”. This loose association is the fact that a car is used in both pursuits. But cars for example are also used in bank robberies but that doesn’t mean that every motorist is a bank robber. So any clarification to this perception is welcome news to the real motorsport fan and car enthusiast alike. The collaboration between the Killarney & District Motor Club and the Gardaí has delivered some of that welcome news on Tuesday with a court ruling against two “boy racers” ordered to pay €3,500 to the courts and to install devices in whatever vehicles they drive to limit their speed to a maximum of 100km/h. after they pleaded guilty to careless driving. Both men were identified doing doughnuts on footage uploaded to Facebook during the Rally of the Lakes weekend. Stating that they “like rallies” carries no weight with the real motorsport fan. These individuals’ actions have

‘Road Users Who Flout The Law Will Be Hunted Down & Prosecuted’

Words: Eve Kelliher

brought motorsport events to their knees in recent years. The increased policing costs and the real motorsport fan electing to stay away from events due to this unwelcome association has seen motorsport events struggle with numbers and budgets. Hopefully the message is getting out there that this anti-social behaviour is not accepted both by the greater motorsport community and society in general. The Killarney & District Motor Club as the promoter of the Rally of the Lakes put considerable financial recourses and supported the Gardaí in providing extra manpower to tackle this issue head on. It was unfortunate that this group of individuals aligned their calendar with Irish motorsport calendar events.

MAYBE I’m missing something here but to me footage cut to toe-tapping music of boy-racers on Moll’s Gap made for cringeworthy viewing. Apart from the obvious dangers presented by such foolhardy antics, how could the audience gathered there have found it so entertaining? Seriously? But they did. It made national news on Tuesday when two men were ordered to pay €3,500 after a boy racer investigation in Killarney. They were identified after footage of their driving was posted on social media sites and got almost 250,000 hits on Facebook. The footage showed two Toyota Corolla cars spinning around each other while a man stood in the centre of the road. Maybe I’m just jealous. Am I losing out by not souping up my own humble Toyota Corolla with a jaunty spoiler and other jazzy accoutrements and heading for Moll’s Gap and such places to applaud boy racers as they wow us with their doughnut-making finesse? What I do applaud is the no-stone-leftunturned approach to tracking down such crimes.

Summit

Credit Union Urges Local Youth To Get Inspired With Zeminar

KILLARNEY CREDIT UNION has partnered with Zeminar, a youth-focused summit for 15 to 20 year olds – known as Generation Z. The event, now in its second year, introduces young people to some of the best and most innovative organisations in Ireland, and focuses on issues and topics of specific interest to their age group. The summit will take place over three days in the RDS, Dublin, from October 10 to 12. This year Credit Union Youth ambassadors Gary and Paul O’Donovan will take to the stage on October 10 to discuss how they are “Inspiring the Next Generation” and to share their unique brand of wit, banter and observations on life

with Zeminar attendees. Guest speakers Anna Geary, Harry McCann, Professor Donal O’Shea and Doireann Garrihy will also headline at the event, amongst many others. Killarney Credit Union is encouraging young people and local schools interested in attending to get in touch for information about tickets for the hotly anticipated event. Joy Clifford Vaughan, youth officer from Killarney Credit Union, said: “We are delighted to be involved in such a unique and interactive event that informs, educates and inspires an entire generation. At Killarney Credit Union we are very cognisant of our role and responsibility in supporting the youth of our community, and

Zeminar will allow us to share ideas on how to engage in a meaningful way with young people. I would urge teachers in local schools and young people themselves to contact us here at Killarney Credit Union and find out how they can avail of tickets for what will be an unmissable event.” Over 20,000 millennials, parents and teachers are expected to attend the conference, where issues such as mental health, wellbeing and career guidance will be the key focus. The event will also include workshops, motivational speeches and interactive classes. Guest speakers will discuss a wide range of topics including wellness, nutrition, bullying, sport, technology and entrepreneurship.

The men were caught doing doughnuts in their cars following a garda investigation into boy racing at the Rally of the Lakes in Killarney. Both men pleaded guilty at the district court in Killarney to charges of careless driving. Killarney hosts the Rally of the Lakes in April and May every year. A specific garda operation is put in place each year to control so-called boy racers. Following this year’s Rally of the Lakes, footage was posted on Facebook showing crowds of people gathered near Moll’s Gap outside Killarney to watch boy racers. “It’s a significant detection for An Garda Siochána and it sent out a very strong message that if you misbehave on the roads around Killarney and South Kerry you will be caught,” Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Gardaí told Killarney Advertiser. “An Garda Siochána will pursue every avenue of investigation to bring offending drivers to court. Killarney Gardaí in conjunction with the Rally of the Lakes organisers and with the support of other stakeholders put every effort into making the rally a safe and enjoyable event. “Road users who flout the law will be hunted down and prosecuted.”

Music To My Ears

Aishling O’Hanlon gets the opinion of the public on busking

Opinion: Eve Kelliher WHEN Killarney Municipal District Mayor Councillor Niall Kelleher called for busking to be regulated this week it was music to my ears. The Fianna Fáil councillor noted that a number of businesspeople have raised the issue of poor quality buskers with him. Calling for a permit to solve the problem, he said: “The problem is there are absolutely no rules and regulations

around busking.” I for one love music and street entertainment, and, like anyone, enjoy quality busking, but hate going through town when there’s a cacophony of buskers vying for attention – particularly when amplification comes into the equation. And the most talented isn’t necessarily the one that is first heard – making me consider the old saying about the cow with the dirty tail bellowing the loudest.

Some Buskers Haven’t A Note In Their Head Opinion: Aishling O’Hanlon I’M a musician and singer myself with two All-Ireland Fleadh titles but to a certain point I agree with Niall Kelleher. Some buskers haven’t a note in their head and are only on the street looking to make money, singing terrible songs and attempting to play instruments (very badly), therefore giving all buskers a bad name. Buskers are on almost every street, but being blunt, only half of them are good enough to stand and listen to, let alone give money to. This summer there is one busker who really stood out for me. I don’t have a name for this person, but I

The Chatroom

Street View ...

know them as “the busker outside Murphy’s ice-cream shop.” I remember walking down the street during the summer, it was a beautiful day and this individual really caught my attention, they were playing the guitar and really made that area of the street come alive with the energy in their singing. Mayor Niall also suggested a permit fee which I think is a great idea, as it would cut down on the number of buskers. I think another solution is to have designated busking locations in the town, or busker-free zones so that during the summer you don’t have a musician, or want-to-be musician on every street.

“Designated times and areas would be great for buskers and the volume of some buskers needs to be toned down as it can be too loud for people. I’m a guitarist and I would advise my fellow buskers to invest in a tuner and also to mix their material.” Kevin Egan, a busker “We don’t find them annoying. Some of them can’t sing but the ones who can sing are great.” Patricia Smith, Dunmanway and Kay Morgan, Bath, England “Buskers should have allocated times for performing. They can be annoying when there’s too many of them.” Peter O’Sullivan, Skibbereen “I think buskers are good. It’s nice to have entertainment in the Kevin Egan, a busker town.” Frank Lewis, Killarney. “Designated areas for buskers would be good.” Dermot McCarthy, Killarney

Childminder ‘Appeared To Be Biting Face Of 18-Month-Old’

The Killarney Town Twinning and Sister Cities Association welcomes delegates from Pleinfeld. Pic: Dylan Clifford

Killarney Welcomes Bavarian Visitors THE District Court in Killarney this week heard startling evidence how a childminder seemed to be “biting” the face of an 18-month old child when a postwoman doing rounds called to a house in a rural area outside Killarney. “Terrible screams” were coming from the hall of the house, as the postwoman approached, the court was told. The childminder, a 38-year-old woman, appeared before Killarney District Court on Tuesday where she pleaded guilty under Section 246 (1) and (2) of the Children Act, 2001 that she wilfully assaulted a child in her care in a manner likely to cause injury to the child’s health or seriously affect its wellbeing. The woman had been looking after the child for over a year, the court was told. The child had suffered bruising which had cleared up in a matter of weeks, and had no facial wounds. This was a onceoff incident and there were no previous convictions, the court also heard. The accused would plead guilty on summary disposal, the solicitor said. Judge James O’Connor ordered the press not to publish matters which identified the child. Outlining the case so the judge could decide on jurisdiction, Sgt Kieran O’Connell said the accused was a childminder. At 12 noon on May 12 last, “a post lady doing her rounds” called to the house and on approaching the door she heard “terrible screams” from the hall, the sergeant said. The post lady looked through a glass panel and observed the childminder with the child in her arms pinned against the wall. “She had her face up against the child’s face as if she was biting the child’s face,”

Sgt O’Connell said. The postwoman banged on the door and she “pounded” on it and the minder came to the door with the child in her arms. The child was “hysterical” and the minder said she couldn’t get the child to stop crying. The postwoman left the house and rang the child’s mother who came home from work and took the child to the doctor. Medical reports handed into court found the child’s face bruised, and no facial bite marks. The bruising healed in two to three weeks, Sergeant O’Connell told the judge. Solicitor Padraig O’Connell said the woman had children of her own and there were no issues with her care of them. Her own children were at home on the date and she was minding the child in its own home. There was full admission and co-operation and full apology. “The crying of the child just got inside her head and she can’t explain what happened. She just lost it. It was a onceoff,” Mr O’Connell said. He offered her profound apology and she is in a state of turmoil since and has been getting professional counselling. “Her family life has come to a halt,” the solicitor said. Judge James O’Connor ordered €5000 be lodged in court for the benefit of the child, to be invested until it reached 18 years, saying he was treating the matter on the same principle as if the child was injured in a road traffic accident. A further €1,000 is to be paid into court for the benefit of the mother of the child, by order of the judge. He adjourned the matter remanding the woman on continuing bail to December 5 and granted free legal aid.

FORGET about spanking new buildings – the ruins of Ireland are enjoying their moment in the limelight in Killarney this month. “Large Ruined Houses of Ireland” is the title of a fascinating photographic exhibition which runs at Killarney Library until Saturday, September 30, during library opening hours. This exhibition of monochrome images is curated by Robert Smith, a photographer and an enthusiast on the subject. The object of the exhibition is to raise awareness of the disappearing architectural masterpieces of Ireland and hope at least one person sees them and takes up their cause. Robert hopes that the exhibition’s

photos inspire young people to take notice and research the demise of these buildings around their county and the rest of Ireland. In 1989, whilst working in England, Robert met Mark Bence Jones, a writer, noted for his books on Irish architecture. He described the plight of some of the large ruined houses in Ireland, many of which had gone past the point of redemption. His enthusiasm was infectious and Robert became interested as a result. This has been a long-term project for Robert with the project only finalised this year. This free exhibition is open Monday to Saturday. IRISH rock’s best kept secret The Riptide Movement return to the INEC Killarney Acoustic Club Friday, September 15. Speaking of the success of the latest album, Mal Tuohy, frontman of the band, said: “It has taken the best part of 18 months to write and record ‘Ghosts’, a journey that began somewhere between the Caragh river and the Seefin mountains of Glenbeigh, Kerry and came to completion in Tornillo, Texas, 30 miles east of the Rio Grande, under the guidance of Grammy award winning producer Ted Hutt. We feel it’s our greatest offering to date and we’re so excited to finally get it out to the world.”

Having blown the Irish music scene wide open in 2014 with their Number One, gold-selling album ‘Getting Through’, a string of Top 10 singles and various soldout headline tours, the four piece – comprising Malachy Tuohy (vocals, piano and guitar), John Dalton (guitar), Gerry McGarry (bass & harmonica) and Gar Byrne (drums & percussion) – will be returning to Killarney after a very busy summer of festivals in Ireland and all over Europe. Irish singer songwriter Mundy performs in the INEC October 6 followed by folk-rock band Hermitage Green December 15. Tickets, €20, are on sale now from Ticketmaster or www.inec.ie.

The total cost amounts to €7,000 for the works, which is being jointly funded by the allocation of €3,500 each by Cllr Brendan Cronin and Cllr John Joe Culloty. It is hoped that this will improve road safety and awareness on the R563.

Celebrities Give Beyonce A “Formation” Birthday Tribute That Will Blow Your Mind Michelle Obama, Adele and Serena Williams are among the famous faces to join Beyonce in celebrating her 36th birthday. The singer set up a website to showcase a series of photos of her friends and family dressed as her plantation owner character in the video Formation. Among those to don the now iconic widebrimmed black hat, off-the-shoulder top and ornate silver choker were Mrs Obama, Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy and her former Destiny’s Child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Mrs Obama has been a close friend of the singer for many years, and Beyonce performed at Barack Obama’s inauguration. The former first lady has frequently spoken of her admiration for the Texan songstress, and tweeted numerous tributes. Serena Williams, who gave birth to her first child on Friday, also posed, as did Beyonce’s mother and mother-in-law. Alongside the photos was a link to the singer’s BeyGOOD Houston initiative, which will help with long-term reconstruction and aid after Hurricane Harvey in her hometown by supplying cots, blankets and pillows, baby products, feminine products and wheelchairs in the wake of historic flooding. Adele also joined in the celebrations, tweeting a happy birthday message to the mother of three.

Ploughing Championships

08.09.17 Words & Pics: Eve Kelliher

Ploughing On For A Top Day Out THE deluge the day before failed to dampen spirits as thousands filed through the turnstiles at the South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show in Fossa on Sunday. Granted, we stepped out in everything from hiking and biker boots to wellies, but it only added to the sense of occasion. So established is the event now that one visitor from Killorglin compared it to Ireland’s oldest festival, Puck Fair, and with a glint in his eye added that the only way it could be improved on for him would be through the addition of an onsite bar. Despite the torrential downpour on Saturday, dozens of volunteers rallied to the cause to ensure the venue at Fleming’s Farm in Fossa was ready for the influx. “The volunteers drove it over the line and we are so hugely thankful to them,” said Tom Leslie, chairman, Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club, which organises the event. The big winners on the day, of

course, were the four charities to benefit – the Irish Kidney Association, Down Syndrome Kerry, the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus – and since its inception, the event has now raised in excess of €100,000 for local organisations. The show was officially opened by Killorglin student Jack Nagle, who made his mark at the Young Scientists Exhibition with his invention of a lifesaving tractor safety lock which has won several awards. A big attraction this year was that the event incorporated the National Rally of the Irish Vintage Society, and this year’s show also featured a round of the Irish Tractor Pulling Championships which was a great spectacle. The winner of the most stylish woman was Susan Moriarty-O’Callaghan from Kilcummin who caught the eye of celebrity judges Gavin O’Leary, who was the best dressed man at the Killarney Races in July, entertainer Jack Patrick Healy and gentleman farmer Sean O’Donoghue.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

‘Apocalyptic’ Hurricane Irma Strikes SEVERAL Caribbean islands have been flattened as Hurricane Irma has left a trail of destruction in its wake. Irma, swept through Caribbean islands, is currently a “potentially catastrophic” Category 5 storm packing maximum sustained winds of 285 km/h. Described as “apocalyptic”, the hurricane moved off the northern coast of the Dominican Republic after plunging Puerto Rico into darkness. The centre said that the hurricane has become a little less organised over the past few hours but the threat of direct impacts in Florida over the weekend and early next week continues to increase. Deaths were reported on four islands. States of emergency have been declared in Puerto Rico, Cuba

and Florida amid fears Miami could be struck directly by the hurricane. A massive operation is under way to evacuate people away from coastal areas on Haiti and the Dominican Republic, where aid workers are moving residents into temporary shelters before the storm hits. The eye of the hurricane is just north of the coast of Puerto Rico, lashing the island with heavy rain and high winds and leaving more than 900,000 people without power. There were fears that the eye could come within 56km of the capital San Juan, bringing gusts of up to 160km/h. Irma is moving at around 26km/h on a course forecast to take it toward the Bahamas and the British overseas territory of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Café Du Parc Brings A Taste Of Continental Sophistication To Killarney LAST week Killarney Advertiser’s Home & Away highlighted the benefits of café culture on the Continent and Café du Parc is definitely bringing forward an exciting concept in the café and bar culture of the town. The highly anticipated opening of the newly redeveloped Café du Parc, located on the site of the original Killarney House, took place following a complete rebrand and the first phase of a new makeover. The rebrand was inspired by the hustle and bustle and energy of the cafés in Paris as well as the special location next to the Killarney National Park. The new venue boasts

a unique and sophisticated atmosphere catering for all tastes and all times of day and night. The first phase of the development sees the opening of a new cafe and cocktail bar. One of the standout features in the new design is their outdoor terrace, which they call their “people-watch heaven”, a place where people can sit back and relax as they watch the locals and visitors go by. The next phase of the development will see the introduction of “Juicery @ Cafe Du Parc” and further refurbishment of the bar. Café du Parc is open seven days a week.

Ireland Urged To Boost ‘Sexiness’ Of Tourism As An Industry IRELAND needs to raise the profile and sexiness of tourism as an industry, according to the CEO of Shannon Group, Matthew Thomas. Mr Thomas was addressing a major national tourism conference which took place in the Listowel Arms Hotel on Wednesday. The event, hosted by Kerry County Council, focused on growing and enhancing the Wild Atlantic Way. Mr Thomas said that tourism is often treated as a second-class industry and the Wild Atlantic Way needs a Titanic-style visitor attraction, such as that in Belfast. Eoghan O’Mara Walsh of the Irish Tourism Industry Confeder-

ation noted that tourism doesn’t always get the recognition and support it deserves and reminded the audience that it is worth €8.6 billion to the Irish economy. The conference, with the theme of “Working as One on the Wild Atlantic Way – Building Sustainable Communities”, was opened by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin. CEO of Kerry County Council Moira Murrell highlighted how Kerry is dependent on tourism, telling the conference that one in five people employed in the county work in the tourism industry. Developing infrastructure is vital and as important as the tourism product itself, she said.

Tractor Crashes Into Garda Car In Rathmore IT’S the sort of clip we watch on YouTube or on Facebook and expect it to have taken place in some land far away. But the footage of a tractor colliding with a garda car occurred right on our doorstep. A man was arrested when pursued by gardaí after his tractor was in collision with a garda car in Rathmore on Sunday. Gardaí were called to Rathmore where they pursued a tractor that failed to stop for a garda car on the road. The incident was filmed by a bystander and the images were broadcast on RTÉ’s Nine O’Clock News programme.

Two garda cars stationary on a street were shown in the broadcast. The tractor was then driven across the street and crashed into a second patrol car before it was reversed out and driven away. Gardaí pursued the tractor and a man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, criminal damage and endangerment. He was questioned in Macroom garda station, where he received medical assistance, but was released that night. A file is being prepared for the DPP.

ONLY priority-boarders who pay €5 or £5 each way will be allowed two bags – one normal size one of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm and one smaller bag of 35cm x 20cm x 2cm on Ryanair flights. Everyone else will only be allowed to carry the smaller size bag. Wheelie-style-cases will now be put in the hold at the boarding gate. Ryanair said it was to avoid flights being delayed. They said the weight allowance for

checked-in bags will increase from 15kg to 20kg. The changes apply to all bookings made before and after November 1. Some travellers have criticised the move with one Twitter writer saying: “Not good for flights under 1 hour long. Wait for bags may be longer than flight. As a frequent flyer, not happy.” Others welcomed the news, with one writing: “Great idea. Much easier than fighting for a space in the cabin.”

Bat Stars In Hilarious Video THE reaction of a Kerry family to an unexpected guest has proved a huge hit on Facebook. When a bat flew into Tadhg Fleming’s home, the resultant chaos in the kitchen were hilarious as Tadhg’s dad Derry tried to catch the visitor. The video has gone viral and Ballymac native Tadhg has found the family capturing the attention of national and international media, including Piers Morgan of ITV. A Tall Story

Opinion

IT MUST have been a slow news week nationally to say that headlines screamed about the height disparity between the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and President Michael D Higgins. This reflected a social media storm as people reacted to a photo of the pair at All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final in Croke Park.

Words: Eve Kelliher As Galway defeated Waterford, President Michael D Higgins and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar soon became the talking point. Twitter users obsessed over the height difference between the pair. The President is recorded as being 5’3 while Taoiseach Varadkar is 6’4, but so what? Get over it. People come in all shapes and sizes.

Wedding of the Week

Wedding Bells For Ellen &Myles THEIR paths first crossed in the bride’s parents’ kitchen and Ellen Mitchell and Myles Cronin exchanged wedding vows recently. Ellen, from Castleisland, and Myles, from Maughantourig, Gneeveguilla, were introduced to one another when her sister Katie Mitchell and his friend Kane O’Donovan called into the family home with Myles and another friend. “What’s crazy is my mom originally comes from Gneeveguilla and growing up we spent a lot of, time there with my family and grandparents, Myles grandparents Micheal and Nell Cronin and my grandparents Danny and Kathleen O’Leary were friends so in a way it’s like it was meant to be,” said Ellen. They were married recently in St Stephen and St John’s Church in Castleisland by Fr Dan O’Riordan and held their reception at the Ballygarry House Hotel, Tralee. Ian Cronin captured the big day on camera. Helping lead the celebrations were the bride’s parents Eileen and John Mitchell and the groom’s mother and father Kathleen and Timmy Cronin. “My grandmother Phyllis Mitchell attended and was very special to have her there,” said Ellen. Katie Mitchell was maid of honour with Claire Crowley and Derval Spillane as bridesmaids. The groom’s brother Timothy Cronin was best man with his friend Michéal Carroll and brother-in-law John O’Halloran as groomsmen. The couple’s sons, Seán Cronin, two, and Tadhg Cronin, six weeks, together with Myles’ nephews Jack and Ollie O’Halloran were pageboys with Paige Campion as flowergirl. “We got engaged in the Castlemartyr Hotel on my birthday 2015 when Myles went down in one knee with our then-10-month-old son Seán present. “Our wedding day was truly beautiful. From start to finish, it really was a day to remember.” The groom’s uncle Mikie Cronin along with Tim Gleeson and Tom O’Connell performed traditional music at the drinks reception. Truly Diverse ensurd the newlyweds and their guests danced the night away, as did DJ Donal Clifford. Ellen, a theatre nurse, and Myles, a carpenter, enjoyed a mini-moon in the Europe Hotel & Resort and will go on honeymoon next year. They will reside in Maulykeavane.

Reviewed: The Break by Marian Keyes THE 13th novel by Marian Keyes The Break begins with a compelling opening. Amy, a PR woman in her 40s, receives the shock news that her husband, Hugh, wants a six-month break from his life, including his marriage. At first, she can’t bring herself to believe he’ll go through with it, but when he buys an enormous back-

pack and a flight to Thailand, she has to face up to the truth. Her husband is leaving her. He promises he’ll be back in six months, but who knows if that’s true. She thought her marriage was rock solid – now, she can’t trust anything. Her friends and family are keen to remind her that a break for him means a break for her, too.

Sky Atlantic - Big Little Lies

Based on the same-titled best-seller by Liane Moriarty, “Big Little Lies” weaves a darkly comedic tale of murder and mischief in the tranquil beachfront town of Monterey, Calif. Amidst doting moms, successful husbands, beautiful children, and stunning homes exists a community fueled by rumors and divided into haves and have-nots, exposing fractured relationships between

husbands and wives, parents and children, and friends and neighbors. Told through the eyes of three mothers -- Madeline, Celeste and Jane -- the series’ narrative explores society’s myths regarding perfection and its romanticizing of marriage, parenting and friendship. Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley star as the three prominent “mothers of Monterey.”

Turn your Company Profit into Personal Wealth Planning for your financial future will give you peace of mind today. This week, our Expert Qualified Financial Adviser, Eoin Liston, Premier Financial Services, discusses turning your company profits into personal wealth

QUEST KILLARNEY OCTOBER Quest Killarney adventure race takes place in just over 4 weeks on 7th October. In the run up to it, every week here in the Killarney Advertiser, we will give you all the information you need to get ready for the world’s biggest adventure race.

One of the most attractive, tax efficient ways for Company Directors to Extract Profits from the Company and turn them into Personal Wealth, is to transfer these Profits into a Company Pension. Company Profits Subject to Corporation Tax

• EVENT PREPARATION

In Ireland, it’s not uncommon to get 4 seasons in one day, so it is important to be prepared and have the right gear.

• WHAT EQUIPMENT / GEAR DO I NEED?

The race organisers provide a high level of safety cover along the route but there will not be marshals around every corner, so it is vital that all competitors bring the following mandatory kit with them from the start. • Basic first aid kit (min: 1 x dressing pad (field dressing), bandage and plasters. • Map of the route (included in your race pack). • Survival blanket and whistle. • Appropriate food and drink. There will be limited water refilling points on the course. • Cycle helmet, bike repair kit, spare tube and pump. • Waterproof jacket. • Suitable footwear (trail runners). All kits will be checked on the morning of the race. You will not be allowed to race without mandatory kit. We will provide kayaks and buoy aids. All you need to bring is a bike, trail runners, your mandatory kit and a quest for adventure!

• WHAT TYPE OF RUNNERS SHOULD I USE? One of the most important things for adventure racing is footwear. Don’t wear your brand-new runners. Get a pair of trail shoes that give you support and grip. Your feet will get wet on the run sections and on the kayak. You can visit O Sullivan’s outdoor shop on New Street Killarney to get advice on tips and gear you need for race day. We are here to help so if you have any questions on the route or the gear required feel free to email us at info@eliteevents.ie We have lots of information on our website, including training plans, tips and advice from the experts.

Transfer profits before tax into a Company Pension Plan

Capital Growth Tax Free

Tax Free Retirement Lump Sum And Income for Life (taxed) Or ARF (income taken is taxed) Where Directors take profit from the Company as salary there will be an immediate tax liability, however those who invest in a Company Pension Plan enjoy benefits such as: • No benefit in kind on employer contributions • Immediate income tax relief on AVCs and employee contributions deducted from salary • Corporation tax relief on employer contributions in the year the contribution is made In order to be eligible to take out a Company Pension Plan the Director must be set up as an employee of the Company and be in receipt Schedule E remuneration. At retirement the Director will be entitled to a retirement lump sum, some or all of which may be tax free. The balance of the fund can then be used to • Purchase an annuity which will provide a guaranteed pension income for life, • Invested into an Approved Minimum Retirement Fund (AMRF) and or Approved Retirement Fund (ARF) • Taxed as taxed cash, subject to certain restrictions

Living The Dream SINCE she opted to leave the rat race and pursue her dream, Killarney native Faela Horgan has not looked back. Faela took up yoga 10 years ago and inspired by the impact the discipline made on her life, decided to train as a yoga instructor. “I recently moved back to my home town of Killarney after spending the last decade in Dublin where I worked as a TV producer,” said Faela. “Teaching yoga is definitely my dream job. It’s about sharing it as it’s made such a positive impact on my life.” She has won an enviable reputation for her yoga classes in Dublin and now more recently in Aghadoe, Killarney. Faela teaches classes suitable for men and women of all ages, designed to strengthen and tone muscles, regulate the body’s energy, and reduce stress. “I teach a Hatha-style yoga class which is an alignment-oriented practice that consists of physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), mindfulness and relaxation (savasana),” said Faela.

“Each session has a theme to help you explore postures, appropriate modifications and variations.” The Yoga For Beginners class is specifically created for students that are new to yoga as well as those looking to get back into their yoga practice after a break. Here you can learn the foundations of Hatha yoga without feeling overwhelmed or confused. The drop-in rate for all group classes is €14, but you can enjoy six classes for just €70. Faela also teaches affordable private yoga sessions. “Whether someone is a complete beginner, suffering from an injury, or just wants to deepen their practice, I collaborate with each client to create a yoga programme that is tailored to their needs and lifestyle, creating a yoga experience to address exactly what their body, mind and soul need at that time.” Semi-private sessions are also avail-

able for those who would prefer to practice with a small group of friends or family. “My purpose is to help people feel good in their bodies and create greater ease in their lives,” said Faela. Contact Faela on 087-6471875, or see www.yogawithfaela.com or her Facebook page @yogawithfaela

St Finan’s & Its Possible Uses World Alzheimer’s Month

St Finan’s Hospital. Inset: Patricia Hanley.

DUE to lack of forward planning, Killarney finds itself in short supply of hospital beds, nursing homes and day centres. Surely local people deserve better – instead they are being catered for in other towns. Killarney is a wealthy town and should be up there with the best with their caring facilities.

The former St Finan’s Hospital and its adjoining lands would be an ideal location for the abo caring facilities. Planners and councils – please do the right things. Patricia Hanley, Chairperson, Killarney Environs Protection Group, Ballydowney, Killarney

SEPTEMBER is World Alzheimer’s Month. The readers of the Killarney Advertiser might be surprised to learn that Alzheimer’s disease is one of at least 400 different types of dementia. All can be associated with difficulties in memory, thinking and language, problem-solving and carrying out everyday tasks, as well changes in mood and behaviour. People in Ireland have poor knowledge of dementia, which is surprising given that so many of us have been touched by it. One in every two of us knows someone with dementia. Half a million of us live in a family that has been affected by dementia and 180,000 of us have cared for a family member or loved one with the condition. Those who have received a diagnosis, their families and loved ones have told us of the stigma and fear which still surrounds dementia. They speak of feeling isolated within their own communities, of being written out of daily life. Ireland is renowned for its sense of community. We have always gathered together to support one another in times of difficulty. The Dementia: Understand Together campaign seeks to build on this tradition of ‘meitheal’ by calling on people to ensure that their

villages and towns, and their clubs and businesses, are part of communities which support people with dementia and strive to be better places in which to live with dementia. Understand Together aims to get people talking about dementia – to understand what it is and what it isn’t – and to encourage them to see the person behind the disease. We need to build on what people with dementia can still do and the contributions they can still make. Together we can all make a difference. Simply taking a few minutes to chat or calling by for a cuppa, can help alleviate some of the loneliness people with the condition and their carers can experience. If you own a business or are part of a club, consider what you can do to become more dementia-inclusive. Find out more by visiting www. understandtogether.ie or Freephone 1800 341 341. This World Alzheimer’s Month, let’s all stand together with the 55,000 people living with dementia in Ireland and play our part in building a more supportive, inclusive and welcoming society for people with dementia. Professor Brian Lawlor Chair, “Dementia: Understand Together” Steering Group Trinity College Dublin

Saying ‘I Do’ To Wedding Prize

Benefits Of Exercise

STAYING fit has a knock-on effect on so many aspects of our general health, from keeping our hearts and lungs healthy, to improving our mood and energy levels. Staying motivated is the biggest challenge we face when trying to get fit and stay healthy. Just a few sessions and your energy levels will increase and you will start to feel great. Exercising improves your strength, fitness, and confidence and raises energy levels, increases your flexibility and mobility, helps you manage stress, helps you sleep better, improves metabolic rate, which helps prevent weight gain, and helps manage anger.

Getting Started

Starting is the hardest part, because it’s when you’ll be most unfit. It’s going to be hard work, and you’re going to want to crash out on the couch in the evening and not go for a run around the park. Start slow – if your fitness levels aren’t great, don’t sign up for next week’s marathon. Taking on too much too soon can be stressful and you can end up feeling more unfit than you really are. Start with a brisk walk. Do something you enjoy and work it into a routine. Exercise with a friend – you might have more fun that way. Most of all, make it fun! THE Killarney Royal Hotel will be one of a number of venues hosting coffee mornings in aid of the Killarney branch of the Kerry Hospice Foundation next Thursday. You can join the fun at the Killarney Royal between 10.30am and 12 noon.

Rebecca Spellman, James Lyons, Sheila O’Callaghan, marketing and social media manager, Kathryn Thomas and Brian Miley, assistant manager, Muckross Park.

LAST Sunday saw the Muckross Park Hotel and Spa gave away its biggest prize to date – a €10,000 cheque towards a wedding reception at the five-star venue. The winning couple, Rebecca Spellman and James Lyons, were presented with their cheque by broadcaster and wedding showcase host Kathryn Thomas. The event included a drinks reception and some delicious samples from Heavenly Baked and Aunty Nellie’s Sweet Shop in the hotel’s Atrium building. There were 23 exhibitors on the day, one from each step of the wedding planning process. Once guests had met with the exhibitors, they were then treated to delectable wedding food samples and an extensive dessert buffet in the hotel’s Valentia Suite. There were a variety of wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses showcased from White Willow Kenmare and Diamond Bridal Cork,

occasion wear from Silk Peaches in Ballincollig and the suits modelled were from Simply Suits & Ryle Menswear. Models were prepped by hair guru Pat O’Neill and makeup artist Sandra Flynn. After the fashion show Kathryn Thomas announced the couples that were shortlisted for the €10,000 prize. The competition received over 800 entries through the online application form, couples were asked to explain why they would like to have their wedding at Muckross and based on their wonderful stories, the judging panel shortlisted 10 couples. The runners-up received a €1,000 voucher off a wedding at Muckross Park Hotel & Spa.

There’s nothing like the sense of achievement to make us want to do even more, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley

Getting Creative I RECENTLY had a run of my show, An Irish Heart which played to audiences all over Kerry. This showed stemmed from a simple idea. All it takes is an open mind and a pretty notebook to get the creative juices flowing! I began performing this show on St Patrick’s Day and the production has simply grown and grown since then. As performers we can get caught up in the struggle for perfection but the warmest memories I take from this time will not be those where the notes were perfect, or indeed the times when the notes were off. I will always remember the love of our audiences, the funny things that went wrong and the mishaps that only we knew about on stage. The people we choose to work with will make or break us and I am so blessed to work with a group of people who I can genuinely call friends. Jayme Linehan is our pianist and she is one of my best

friends. In my moments of terror, she is always there with a hug and a smile. Conor Linehan is our guitarist and he is so multi talented. Conor always brings much needed calm to proceedings. The gentle and sweet Lucy Tanner is our violinist and I have come to know and respect her very deeply through this process. I cannot forget our two wonderful dancers Scott O’Meara and Ciaran Quigley. These young men bring such joy an energy to the stage every night and they are an absolute pleasure to work with. We plan to run this show throughout 2018 and cannot wait to get planning our next step. To plant the seed of an idea, water it with love and watch it grow into something much bigger and much more beautiful than you ever expected is such a gift and a it is a gift that I will always treasure. • Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie

Last LaFerrari Ever To Be Auctioned For Charity FERRARI will auction off its very last LaFerrari Aperta with all proceeds going to the charity Save the Children. The charitable act follows on from last year when the famous prancing horse brand raised over €6 million for victims of the earthquake that struck central Italy. Ferrari has made one more Aperta than it said it would, pushing total production to 210 cars. Out of that, only 200 cars were sold to real punters. The other nine cars were kept by Ferrari itself to be used for “celebrity” promotional purposes. The one-off LaFerrari features spe-

cial metallic white stripes, and a black Alcantara interior powered by a 588kW 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V12 that combines a 120kW electric motor. The LaFerrari reaches 100km/h in less than three seconds with a top speed is in excess of 350km/h. Going under the hammer with RM Auctions this Saturday, Ferrari has invited any interested wealthy bidders to register their interest in the last ever LaFerrari on RM Sotheby’s website. According to the charity, the money raised by the sale will be used to fund a global education program.

My precious child. There’s not a day that passes That I don’t sit and cry And look to heaven for a reason But still I don’t know why. Couldn’t He have waited Another year or two Until you were older And I’d had more time with you. Forgive me Lord, I then say All these thoughts are wrong There had to be a reason I know I must be strong. You’re in the arms of Jesus now And I know that you’ll be fine But I wish with all my heart That those arms could be mine. Love you always and forever Mom and Dad. xxxx

Garden Magic Debby Looney

Hedging Your Bets

PRIVACY. Shelter. Barriers. These are just some of the reasons we plant hedges. Hedging is used in a wide range of situations – they can be used to divide sections of garden, for example, the vegetable garden from the patio area. Or they are used to frame parts of the garden, maybe a low box hedge around a rose garden. In the main, however, we use them as perimeters to our land. With the dormant season coming up, I thought it might be helpful to explore some options. The dormant time of year for plants is from October through to the end of March. This is when plants stop growing, and they can be sold as bare-root hedging, making it much cheaper when you are buying in bulk. Many people prefer to plant evergreen hedges, usually for the sake of privacy, and sometimes for shelter. The most common hedges are: the Leyland cypress, they are fast growing, almost three feet per year, can take a lot of wind and are full from the bottom up. The main drawback is the fact that they grow faster and larger than is often planned for. Griselinia hedging was probably the most popular hedge until the bad winters of 2010/11 when a lot of it was lost. Another evergreen, its main feature is that it can be clipped tightly, and so is ideal for narrow spaces. The third most popular hedge is the Laurel. It is evergreen, extremely fast growing and dense, but a greedy plant, needing regular feeding to prevent it going yellow. Alternative hedges are Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea, a good thorny barrier with purple foliage and striking autumn colour. It grows fast, and is very suited to tight clipping. Cotoneaster dielsianus has an abundance of berries in the autumn, and is often evergreen. Fuchsia, while not evergreen, provides so much colour in the summer that it is well worth planting. I grow Rosa rugosa around the vegetable garden, and notice that greenfly prefer it to most other plants, and it can take the invasion of aphids without suffering too much. That, along with its beautifully scented and showy flowers, followed by the large orange hips in the autumn, makes it a winner in my opinion. The Guelder Rose, or Viburnum opulus, is another favourite of mine, especially if you have some space, width wise. It flowers white in the spring, earning it the name Snowball bush, and produces copious amounts of bright red berries from September onwards – which are excellent in flower arrangements. The Spindle bush – so called as its wood is so hard it was used to make spindles – is also a wonderful plant in a hedge. It has barely noticeable flowers in the spring, but the berries are bright pink with an orange centre, and positively glow in their neon brightness! Ideally I would always recommend using native plants, such as blackthorn, hawthorn, beech and holly. • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

Cathedral Choirs Seek New Members ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL CHOIR and St Mary’s Cathedral Children’s Choir are both welcoming new members from September 12 forward when they resume their rehearsal schedule. St Mary’s Cathedral Choir is a venerable institution spanning back over 150 years, said choral director Aidan O’Carroll. “A magnificent cathedral such as St Mary’s deserves a top class choir,” said choral director Aidan O’Carroll. Before I took over four years ago, I came incognito to hear the choir, being careful not to be spotted in the Cathedral by members of the choir, many of whom I knew very well. I was impressed by the quality and musicality of the singers and felt that I could really achieve something.” Aidan set about a programme of renewal in all aspects of the Cathedral choir’s work. “In this I got the wholehearted support of the choir members, organist Ulla Latimer and, of course, Fr Kieran O’Brien and the other priests as well as Bishop Ray Brown,” said Aidan. The choir’s repertoire has been completely overhauled and expanded to nearly 200 pieces. The choir rehearses year round (except August) in the choir gallery on Tuesday nights from 7.30-9pm and on Sun-

day mornings from 9.30-10.30am before singing the main Mass. The choir has also undertaken a number of CD and DVD recording projects and has increased its non-liturgical performances and broadcasts significantly. The Cathedral also attracts quite a few visiting choirs from as far away as Australia and New Zealand and the United States. The Cathedral choir often gives joint performances with these. The annual Carol Concert held on December 8th has become an important event in the cultural life of the town. The Cathedral Children’s Choir was established in October 2014 and is now entering its fourth year. Boys and girls aged 8-12 are welcome. There is no audition and membership is entirely free. The choir rehearses every Tuesday from 6.30-7.15pm in the Cathedral choir room directly over the sacristy. Children learn a wide repertoire both liturgical and non-liturgical and are taught to read music, something which is very valuable in later life. The Children’s choir also takes part in concerts in the cathedral and elsewhere. Anyone interested in trying out either choir can simply come along on Tuesday 12th at the appropriate time or call Aidan O’Carroll on 087-4103220.

Kerry Soccer Is Back: Seven Things To Watch Out For It wasn’t gone for long but the Kerry District League is back with a bang this weekend, writes Killarney Athletic’s Adam Moynihan 1. Can Athletic repeat the trick? Last year’s success didn’t come easy but all of us at Athletic are well aware that things are about to get a lot more difficult. Winning back to back league titles is a tall order at the best of times but when you consider that our 2016/17 championship came on the back of a 52-year drought, the scale of the task at hand comes sharply into view. The league champions always have a target on their backs and Celtic and Dingle especially will be going all out to prove that our double was just an anomaly. It’s certainly a massive challenge but we have great confidence in our squad. Youngsters like Aydan Mulvaney, Darren Mulcahy and Eamonn Lavin have had excellent pre-seasons and if they continue to improve, and we continue to work as hard as we have been as a group, we should be there or thereabouts come June.

2. Celtic on a mission There’s nothing more dangerous than a wounded animal and Celtic will certainly be hurting from last year’s league final defeat. They are ultra-competitive year in, year out and I’d expect nothing less from them this season. Although another lengthy FAI Junior Cup run would be welcomed, I’m sure knocking Athletic off their perch will be high on their list of priorities and they undoubtedly have all the tools to mount a very serious title challenge. The Killarney derbies, which Celtic dominated for such long time, proved particularly unpleasant for them last season so expect fireworks whenever that fixture rolls around again.

3. Geeha back in the big time Mastergeeha showed great character to bounce straight back from relegation in 2015/16 and return to the Premier at the first time of asking. Now, their attention turns to staying there. As the only team to have been promoted, fixtures against Inter Kenmare, who finished just outside the relegation places, are likely to be crucial. The Premier is bound to be extremely competitive again this year but Geeha have some good players and they’ll fancy their chances of causing a few upsets against the big hitters.

4. When will the season end? It might seem like a strange question to ask before the

campaign has even started but it’s an issue that has caused a lot of controversy in recent times. The first game of last season was played on August 26, 2016. Our Cup Final against Mitchel’s Avenue took place on July 23, 2017. We had our first friendly game for this season against Ringmahon on August 12. That’s 11 months of football followed by a three-week break. Celtic had to face a similar scenario as their involvement in the FAI Cup meant they also had a ridiculously short breather. Hopefully the fact that there are only nine teams (as opposed to ten) in the Premier will help solve the problem. Castleisland’s B team and Mastergeeha finished in the promotion places in the Premier B but, as their A team also play in the top flight, Castleisland Bs were refused entry. It was mooted that Rattoo Rovers, who finished second bottom in the Premier, might be offered a stay of execution but they gave so many walkovers the league decided to just relegate them and Park and promote Mastergeeha. Players and management alike will be hoping for a much shorter season and far fewer walkovers this time out.

There are so many teams in Tralee there’s bound to be a scrap for bodies, but you’d never expect the likes of Dynamos and Park to be the ones losing out. A string of successive promotions has seen Mitchels’s Avenue and Tralee Celtic climb all the way to the Premier B and they have every chance of going up again at the end of this campaign. The way things are going, Tralee soccer desperately needs them to do just that.

6. Will the transfer merry-go-round throw up some shock moves? There might not be huge sums of money floating around the KDL but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any significant transfers forced through as clubs scramble to put the finishing touches on their line-ups. Dingle have already made a major statement by recruiting Con Barrett and Paudie Quinn while Celtic and Athletic have also been linked with some big name signings. Whether or not anything comes of all the speculation remains to be seen.

7. Lower league sides gunning for promotion There will be plenty of local interest in Division 1A (the third tier) as Cedar Galaxy, QPR and Ballyhar Dynamos will all be vying for a top-two finish. Cedar narrowly avoided relegation in 16/17 but they’ve made a couple of good signings and they’ll be hoping for better things this season. QPR, meanwhile, were unlucky not to win the Reserve Cup in July and they will be going all out for promotion, as will Ballyhar who also have the potential to make a push for one of the top spots. Killarney Celtic and Killarney Athletic. Who will prevail in 2018? Celtic pic: Konrad Paprocki.

5. A changing of the guard in Tralee Park’s withdrawal from the Premier A just a few short months into last season will have come as a major shock to casual observers. They have for a long time been one of the top sides in Tralee and up until recently always challenged for silverware, while their underage set-up continues to be one of the finest in the county. Ultimately, they were unable to cope with the loss of some key players and interest waned to the point that they could no longer field a competitive team. They have been demoted to Division 1B, the fourth tier of Kerry football. Incredibly, Tralee Dynamos seem to be on a similar path. Traditionally one of Kerry’s strongest outfits, they have struggled to make an impact over the last couple of years and now it seems as though a number of important players are moving on.

Premier A fixtures (September 8-10): Killarney Athletic v Listowel (Friday at 7pm) Castleisland v Mastergeeha (Sunday at 11.30am) Dingle v Killarney Celtic (Sunday at 2pm) Inter Kenmare v Tralee Dynamos (Sunday at 2pm)

Galway Are All Ireland Hurling Champions

Sport

Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald GALWAY were crowned All Ireland senior and minor champions at Croke Park on Sunday last. The seniors bridged a 29-year gap when they defeated Waterford 0-26 to 2-17 while the minor team defeated Cork on a scoreline of 2-17 to 2-15. Both games were keenly contested and the issues were in doubt right up to the final whistle. Hard luck on Waterford who were also very hungry for success. Galway were the better team overall nevertheless, it came down to a puck of the ball in the finish. They had the great Joe Canning on board seeking the only inter county medal that eluded him up to now. He scored nine points, three of these from play and he shot just one wide; it was very fitting that he played a major role in this victory when one considers all the disappointments he suffered over the years. Captain and Man of the Match David Burke led by example and scored four points from play. Full forward Conor Cooney also had a great game and delivered three points in that total of 26. The star defender was wingback Gearóid McInerney reminiscent of his father’s play in the maroon colours two decades ago. He was marking Anthony Gleeson, last year’s Hurler of the Year. The Waterford man had a frustrating afternoon. All he could manage were three wides and this was crucial in Waterford’s defeat. Conor Cooney also excelled at full forward scoring three points. He is the son of Joe Cooney, the former Galway great.

PAURIC MAHONY Waterford were very dependent on centre forward Pauric Mahony who scored a total of 11 points, 8 of these from frees. Jamie Barron and Michael Walsh also impressed. Canning scored the opening point after a mere 20 seconds and Galway added 3 more points in the opening minutes to assert supremacy by taking the game to Waterford. Goals win matches. Not

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy LAST weekend Killarney RFC’s season kicked off in earnest with our minis and youths sections returning to training for the new season. Our U14, U16 and U18 squads began training ahead of a busy season kicking off over the next few weeks. With our U14 winning the league and cup double last season, the youth squads will be pushing hard again this season. A good U14

so in this case but Waterford’s first gaol did kept them in the game as they played catch-up. Kevin Moran raised the green flag following good work by Michael Walsh. Game on, but this did not deter Galway who kept scoring points. All in all nine Galway players scored while seven did so for Waterford. Kieran Bennett scored Waterford’s second goal which left the sides level. At half time Galway led by just a point 0-14 to 2-7 when they should have been further ahead only for those two goals.

SECOND HALF NIP AND TUCK Two minutes in to the second half Pauric Mahony had the sides level. Canning brought Galway back in to it and that was the pattern at the three quarter stage. In the 51st minute captain David Burke opened up a three-point lead, but Waterford just stuck in there and by the 56th minute they were only a point adrift. Galway kept pushing ahead and led by four points. Mahony did score another point but there was no way through that Galway defence for the

match can be as entertaining as any match out there at any age group. So, if you get a chance to catch a youths match, definitely pop along to Aghadoe, it will be well worth the trip. Our minis returned to training for the new season last Saturday also. We were blessed with the weather until the final 30 minutes and then the heavens opened. However the resilience of kids playing sport is something to behold as the children literally ignored the rain to play on! It was great to see as the season ahead could be like this for all we know! Another good thing to come from the minis returning to training is the

goal Waterford needed. The better team won, but due credit is due to Waterford for making such a great game of it, a real thriller for the full house attendance. Full credit to both teams. Here’s hoping that Dublin and Mayo will provide the same level of excitement in the football final.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL MOLYNEAUX CUP

Dr Crokes and Rathmore will meet in the final on Saturday, September 9, following semi-final victories over Kerins O’Rahillys and Austin Stacks respectively.

MCELLIGOTT CUP Beaufort play Ballydonoghue and Spa play John Mitchels in the semi finals.

COUNTY LEAGUE DIVISION 3 Gneeveguilla defeated Fossa in a one sided game back game played on Friday evening last, final score 4-11 to 0-09. Two Goals from Shane Crowley and one each from Mike Murphy and Brendan Sheehan was enough to see Gneeveguilla through. Paudie Clifford kicked most of Fossa scores but Gneeveguilla proved too strong.

growth of girls rugby in the club. We welcomed more new female players again last weekend, a testament to the recent Women’s World Cup as well as the hard work done by the club to promote girls rugby at KRFC. Tomorrow, we will host a family fun day at Aghadoe between 12 and 3pm where we will have a barbecue, many family fun games as well as rugby footgolf and a giant rugby dartboard to add to the fun. We would like to invite everyone in the Killarney area and beyond to come along and check it out and enjoy the day with us. A fantastic day is guaranteed!

County League Climax Provides No Real Surprises With many of the big issues decided before throw-in, there wasn’t much scope for excitement, writes Adam Moynihan THE 2017 County League drew to a close on Sunday with virtually a full round of fixtures taking place and, fortunately for all those teams needing favours, it all turned out as expected. One team who are in no need of favours at the moment are Dr Crokes who made it 11 from 11 in Division 1 with an emphatic 6-22 to 1-11 win over Glenbeigh-Glencar. They will be joined in the final by An Ghaeltacht who beat St Mary’s by four points in Caherciveen. Rathmore, who defeated Austin Stacks in Rathbeg, were waiting in the wings if An Ghaeltacht slipped up but they’ll have to make do with a third-place finish.

From a local point of view, it will be great to see all three Killarney clubs, Legion, Crokes & Spa, back in Division 1 in 2018 At the other end, Stacks and Desmonds have been relegated and they’ll be joined in Division 2 by either Mary’s or Milltown-Castlemaine who will have to contest a playoff. Legion were crowned Division 2 champions following a resounding 4-18 to 2-11 win in Glenflesk and they’ll operate in the top tier next season, as will Beaufort and Spa who had also already secured promotion. Kilcummin stayed up at the expense of Waterville with victory over Spa, while relegation had previously been confirmed for St Pat’s and Listry. In Division 3, Ballymac, Na Gaeil and Dromid have all been promoted although it’s still unclear who’ll go up as champions. St Michael’s-Foilmore, Fossa and either St Senan’s or Gneeveguilla will play Division 4 football in 2018. Keel and Lispole will face off in the Division 4 final before starting their preparations for life in Division 3, and Dr Crokes’ B team could be joining them on the back of a comfortable 11-point victory over Castlegregory. They will play Skellig Rangers, who beat them on the opening day, in a playoff to decide who will clinch the third promotion place. If they manage it, Crokes’ B team will be in the same division as Laune Rangers and Gneeveguilla (if Gneeveguilla win their playoff), a prospect which would have seemed inconceivable just a few short years ago. Scartaglen, Sneem-Derrynane and Duagh have been

relegated to Division 5 and will be replaced by Cordal, Ballylongford and either Cromane or Rathmore B who finished joint third on 17 points. All in all, you’d have to say the biggest shock of the entire 2017 County League has been the demise of Austin Stacks. Last year’s beaten finalists won just once, at home to Desmonds (who lost all their games), and picked up a paltry four points in total from 11 games. Despite their terrible league form they’ve still

managed to navigate their way to the quarterfinal of the County Championship, so all is not lost yet for the men from Connolly Park. Crokes, meanwhile, have been rampant and will be favourites to add another league title to their collection, although An Ghaeltacht have impressed en route to their surprising second-place finish. From a local point of view, it will be great to see all three Killarney clubs, Legion, Crokes and Spa, back in Division 1 in 2018.

smalltalk

Mastergeeha centre half Adam O’Reilly talks to Adam Moynihan about his side’s return to the Premier, being a two-year minor and a unique superstition Well Adam. Are you looking forward to the new season? Yeah, being back in the Premier is good for the club. It’s exciting. A new chapter. The amount of time the managers and players have put in over the past few years… They’ve worked hard and they got the results they needed to get up there. It’s your first season back playing soccer, isn’t it? It is. I went away playing football but I’m back now. Hoping to get a bit of playing time. What will be the goals for the coming year? Stay up anyway and have a good cup run somewhere along the line. Staying up is probably the most important for the first year. We can build on that then. Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? Jamie Kelliher after a few lemonades. You couldn’t shut him up. Who’s the best at Tinder? That’d be telling! To be honest, as a married man I wouldn’t have a clue. Who’s the biggest moaner? 100% myself. I’m reckless. Who’s the worst-dressed? Alan Breen. He thinks he’s Danny Dyer walking around at training sessions. Who spends the most time in the gym? Not me anyway… I don’t even know where it is, as you can see by my physique! Probably Anthony Magnier. If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for your club this year, who would it be? Kevin Gorman because we worked well together in the back line, or Brian Devane for the Super Sundays. Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? Soccer: Jamie Doolan. Football: Paddy Curran. Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? The O’Donoghue Brothers. Jeff and Lee. I think they’re serious athletes. Who was your toughest ever opponent? Mike ‘Smiler’ Moloney in football. In soccer, anyone who’s faster than me. If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? I couldn’t really pick. I’ve played with more clubs than Tiger Woods. What’s your proudest sporting moment? Making the Kerry minor team. What year was that? 2006 and 2007.

Sport Adam O’Reilly

Oh, of course. A two-year minor! Ye had a good team around that time. We lost the All-Ireland the first year against Roscommon after a replay. Paddy Curran and Tommy Walsh, that team. And the most embarrassing sporting moment? Missing a penalty against Alan Kelly in an under 15 final. If only I had kept it low, he would never have gotten to it. If you had to compare yourself to a professional athlete, who would it be? Freddie Flintoff. We seem like we have a lot in common.

Freddie Flintoff If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? Páidí Ó Sé, Freddie Flintoff and Jamie Redknapp. What are your five favourite sports in order? GAA, soccer, golf, darts and hurling. You’re big into the darts… Yeah I used to play a lot. I played with Kerry actually. I’m not playing town league this year – too busy with the kids - but I’ll get back into it again. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? I’d love to give rallying a go. And boxing. After a few football games there you’d be thinking, “I’m not bad at it.” Smiler knows about a few of them! What’s the best sporting moment of all time? It would have to be Kerry winning the All-Ireland against Mayo in ’97. I was only nine but that’s when I got hooked on football. Maurice Fitz was the main reason I started playing. Do you have any nicknames? Just Reilly or Reills. Some people call me Horse. Do you have any superstitions? If I ever get injured, I won’t wear those football

boots again. If I twist my ankle or anything, that’s it. I’ll buy a new pair. I have a few superstitions myself but that’s extreme enough! Yeah, I had one bad incident and I didn’t wear the boots anymore. They were brand new and I just put them to the side. That was it. I just said never again. Who’s the best man for the banter in the team WhatsApp group? I only joined this year so I’m just getting in to it. I haven’t seen anyone getting too smart yet. What’s your most-used emoji? What’s the best show on TV?

Game of Thrones or Ballers. What’s your favourite song at the moment? Feels by Katy Perry. What would you sing at karaoke? Streets of New York. I’d be a bit of a rebel that way. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? Peter O’Brien. The Head. Ye’d be colleagues in the post office? Yeah. He named the Gooch and everything. He’s a legend around town. Who would play you in a movie about your life? I’d like to think Tom Hardy but in real life it’d probably be Colm Meaney. And last one… Can you tell me a joke? Did you hear about the psychiatrist who kept his wife under the bed? No… He thought she was a little potty. Good one! Thanks Adam. No bother!

Hamilton On Top LEWIS HAMILTON took the lead in the F1 championship at last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Ferrari’s backyard. Hamilton took the win over Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel finishing in third place now trails Hamilton by three points in the closely fought championship in years. Hamilton finished nearly five seconds ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas while Vettel came third in his Ferrari, more than half a minute behind. Damage limitation was the order of the day for the Ferrari driver after securing a poor sixth spot on the grid with a poor performing Ferrari in the wet Monza qualifying conditions. Vettel’s podium place came under threat late in the

race from Daniel Ricciardo. The Red Bull driver pulling off the overtake of the day with a stunning move on Vettel’s teammate, Kimi Raikkonen on his way to fourth place (pictured). The Red Bull driver had started 16th on the grid but charged through the field and his move on Raikkonen with 12 laps remaining was one of the best of the season so far. Monza results were not all as them seem, the current hybrid era and penalty system confused fans last weekend with nine of twenty drivers taking penalties before the start, effectively making the qualifying results meaningless compared to the starting grid formation.

Meeke & Nagle Keep Citroen Drive For Rally Catalunya KRIS MEEKE and Paul Nagle will keep their Citroen place for the next round of the World Rally Championship in Spain next month. Their teammates for the event will be Stephane Lefebvre and Khalid Al Qassimi, leaving no space for fellow Irish driver Craig Breen. Andreas Mikkelsen, who has contested three rallies for the Citroen this season, replacing Meeke for one, will complete the campaign with rival manufacturer Hyundai. Despite Meeke having a full-season contract with Citroen, his place in the team had not been confirmed for Cataluyna after he struggled for form on Rally Finland

Dr Crokes Academy

followed by a crash in Germany last month. While Breen misses out in Spain, he will be back in for the last two rallies of the season. Meeke’s Citroen deal was supposed to cover every event of both the 2017 and ‘18 WRC seasons, but Citroen will now leave decisions on team line-ups as late as they can for the rest of this year. Andreas Mikkelsen switch from Citroen to Hyundai for the remainder of the season, ahead of an expected full 2018 campaign with the Korean manufacturer will be welcome news for Meeke. However a strong end to the season now is more critical than ever to secure a place in Citroen’s line-up for 2018.

Our family day takes place tomorrow, Saturday at Aghadoe between 12 and 3pm and we would like to welcome everyone who plays rugby at every age to come along with their families and enjoy the day. We will have a BBQ, a rugby version of footgolf and a giant inflatable dart board as well as many games for all the family including bouncy castles etc. So, why not come along to Aghadoe next Saturday and enjoy the family fun day. Minis: Our minis returned to training last Saturday and a huge crowd of both boys and girls aged between 5 and 11 came along to Aghadoe to take part. We have seen girls rugby develop over the last season and the Women’s Rugby World Cup has certainly helped raise the profile of girls rugby. This has been the case with our minis where we are seeing more and more girls taking up rugby. It’s great to see such an interest in rugby. Next Saturday we will not have training, however we would ask all our minis and their families to come to Aghadoe from 11:30 and join in the fun of the family day. Be sure to spread the word. Youths training: Our u14’s had their first training session of the new season last Saturday under head coach Ian Harrington, while our U16’s returned to training last Thursday evening at Aghadoe between 7 and 8:30pm and our U18’s train every Wednesday at the same time. County League Round 11 Played in Lewis Road – Sunday September 3rd 2017. In a game, which was a fact-finding mission for both teams, rather than a County League game, we ran out easy winners. The reason for the game result being irrelevant was that we had already qualified for the final and Glenbeigh were lying in the upper half of the table but having no chance of making the final. We were the fitter of the two teams as we have been training for the Club Championship Final next Sunday, and our opponents would not be getting ready as yet for the Mid Kerry Championship. It was however a good game for both sides as the game was very open and many players had many kilometres on the clock by games end. We got off to a great start and a few major scores in the first quarter put us into a good lead. Glenbeigh to their credit did not go over defensive but attacked at every opportunity. At the half time whistle we were well in front. Glenbeigh were much more competitive in the second half but they were never going to overhaul our lead. Both managements would have been satisfied with the workout but our fitness levels were always going to win the game. We now play An Gaeltacht in the League Final. As a result of this victory we now have won all our 11 games in the league. I’m not sure it’s a record for Division 1but maybe the outstanding Austin Stacks team of the nineties might have equalled that record. Our top scores were Brian Looney and Micheal Burns who scored 2-3 each. Team: Shane Murphy, John Payne,

Mike Moloney, David O’Leary, Shane Doolan, Alan O’Sullivan, Gavin White, Johnny Buckley, Daithi Casey, Micheal Burns, Gavin O’Shea, Brian Looney, Colm Cooper, Chris Brady, Kieran O’Leary. Subs: Tony Brosnan, Mike Milner, Luke Quinn. Congratulations to Michelle Moloney and Anthony Loughnane on their recent Marriage Deepest Sympathies to the Murphy and Kenny Family on the recent death of Jerry Murphy, Mangerton Road RIP.

In the second half, Glenflesk continued to have the edge, thanks to a superb midfield display. Patrick Darcy scored the crucial second half goal to seal a place in the final, away against Beaufort. Lotto: 3rd September 2017 Numbers drawn were 4, 20, 24, 26. There was no jackpot winner. Next weeks jackpot will be €4,500. Seniors: The senior team played their final round county league game of the year against Brosna on Sunday. While they played well and the game ended in a draw, 2-11 each, Fossa will be disappointed not to have remained in Division 3 for another year. Games were lost by the minimum of margins which showed that it was a really competitive division and the difference between winning and losing was very small. However it’s onwards and upwards, with a couple of very good minors due to come into the team next year we look forward with confidence to the future Best Wishes: Fossa GAA Club would like to thank John and Cian Evans for the work they have done with our senior team over the past 18 months. John took over as manager in 2016 and what followed was the most successful year the club has ever had at senior level. We won the County Junior Championship and gained promotion to Division 3 of the County league. He brought a huge level of enthusiasm and professionalism to the job which benefitted the team and the club. We would like to wish John every success in his new role as Wicklow manager and we wish them both the very best for the future.

Killarney Legion GAA

Division 2 County League Champions. Congrats to our Senior men who, by virtue of a 4-18 to 2-11 win over Glenflesk, were crowned Division 2 County League champions. To go through the whole campaign unbeaten, with 8 wins and 3 draws, sealed an emphatic return to the top division and it’s one the players and management team can take great pride in. With the unavailability of our intercounty contingent it afforded others the opportunity to step up to the mark in what can be a very tough division. Well done to team and management!! Senior Ladies Success Well done to our Senior ladies who captured their Junior Championship with a fantastic win over a very competitive Cromane team. Cromane struck for early first half goals to build up a lead but our girls, through some great point taking, nudged ahead at half time. Killarney Legion 0-12 Cromane 2-4 Cromane again started the second half strong and ran into a 3-point lead again before we took over in the last quarter with Denise Lyne and Elizabeth Mohan stealing in for goals. By full time we had ran out 6 point winners on a score of 3-14 to 3-08. Captain Denise Lyne was presented

with the trophy at full time and huge credit is due to the girls and management team of John Doona and Susanne Smith. This Championship win builds nicely on last year’s league triumph and bodes well for the future of ladies football in the club. A nice early return too for our generous team sponsors Rentokil Initial. Legion U12 Girls: Our U12 girls opened up their East Kerry campaign with a humdinger of a win over Laune Rangers last week in Direen. In what was a very even game scoring was at a premium which was a tribute to both defenses who put in a huge effort. A bit more of a cutting edge on our forward division proved the difference. We will be playing Division One football next year so that’s a huge improvement for us.
