SouthDoc service to continue despite issues SouthDoc services in Killarney are set to continue but could at times be left without a doctor, the Director of SouthDoc told the Killarney Advertiser this week. | By Sean Moriarty In recent weeks the service across Kerry and Cork has been embroiled in controversary as some services had no doctor on duty leaving patients with no choice but to travel miles away to other areas to access the service, or wait for their own GP to come on duty. The majority of out-of-hours doctors who provide the service come from countries like South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. However, recent administration changes mean securing work visas for these doctors is taking longer than previous applications. Current rules say that doctors from

these countries can work in Ireland for up to 90 days. Once this period is up they must leave the country for another 30 days before reapplying and new applications can take anything up to another 30 days to process. “What we are seeing here is that doctors can be out of the country for nearly two months,” Killarney-based, Dr Gary Stack, who is a Director of SouthDoc, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Someone, somewhere initiated a change to the visa system without having a full understanding of the ramifications and implications it would have to other services. Doctors have to jump through too

many hoops to get the paperwork and that is why we are short numbers. We will continue to run the service, but from time-to-time not every centre will have a doctor on duty, and in such cases patients will be asked to travel to the next available centre.”

Killarney relatives appeal for support to find missing girl The Killarney-based relatives of a girl who is missing in Kuala Lumper, Malaysia have asked the local community to help support efforts to find her. Nóra Quoirin, the daughter of an Irish-French couple based in London, has been missing since last Sunday morning. The 15-year-old who has special needs, disappeared while on holiday with her family at a resort in a nature reserve near Seremban, 63km south of Kuala Lumper. Her mother Meabh, originally from Belfast, is understood to have been travelling on an Irish passport. Her cousin Piaras Kelly is well-known in Kerry. He and his wife Catherine run Kerry Climbing, offering escorted tours of Carrauntoohil, and the MacGillycuddy's Reeks. He is also a volunteer with Kerry Mountain Rescue. ‘Nóra would not know how to get help and would never leave her family voluntarily', read a family statement this week. 'Local police now consider this a criminal matter and are treating it as an abduction'. The family has a GoFundMe page 'Find Nora Quoirin'.

Contingency plans in place if Belfast trip ends | By Michelle Crean Kerry patients seeking treatment for cataracts, hips and knee surgery in Belfast could soon face a trip abroad – in the event of a nodeal Brexit. The cross-border directive will most likely end in October, which means the Kerry and Cork patients who have been travelling north for treatment, which is organised by the Healy-Raes, will no longer have access to the service.

Patients face up to a four year wait here but can be seen in Belfast in a matter of weeks. For over 18 months, 14 patients are brought per trip to Knightsbridge Hospital - the maximum the clinic will take on one day. The most common trip is for cataract operations, which is a two-day trip, up Friday for consultation and home Saturday evening after their operation. Orthopaedic surgery such as knee and hip operations are also carried out there, but this involves two trips up. However, both Kerry Independent

TDs, brothers Michael and Danny, are already making contingency plans to bring patients to Spain, Italy or other European countries if Britain crashes out of the EU on October 31. “The cross-border directive will most likely end in October with Brexit, so our buses will end,” Michael Healy-Rae TD told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “We are currently full for August and September taking people up. The next available date is September 27.” He said that he’s up to his eyes organising everything behind the scenes as he

fears what October’s outcome will be. “The Dáil have given me assurances but I’m putting in contingency plans, whether it’s Spain, Italy or where ever,” he said. “The Minister for Health and all those that support him should hang their heads in shame that I’ve to take people on a boat or a plane abroad. We’re pumping millions upon millions of euro into the health service in Ireland. It’s crazy. It’s insane. They should see how wrong this is.”

Civil Defence events at risk due to licence issues | By Sean Moriarty Major events in the county, including Killarney, are at risk of being either cancelled or having major financial headaches unless a standoff between the Civil Defence and the Department of Defence is resolved before August 31.

NEW TV SHOW: TD Michael Healy-Rae and Irish TV presenter Lucy Kennedy are set to team up for a new TV show which will be aired in early 2020.

Healy-Rae set for new TV show The chemistry between them is TV gold - and it’s set to continue - with a new programme in the works for starring TD Michael Healy-Rae and Ireland’s Got Talent host Lucy Kennedy. | By Michelle Crean The popular duo had the country in stitches on Virgin Media’s ‘Livin’ With Lucy’, as humous Kennedy spent days with Healy-Rae at his south Kerry home last year for a fly-on-the-wall look at his hectic life and schedule as a TD. Now they’re set to team up once again, and speculation is mounting as to what the programme will contain, as Michael Healy-Rae this week confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that filming will be completed before the end of the year. The yet unnamed programme is being made by an Irish production company, although it’s unclear who will buy it – but it’s thought to once again be brought to Irish screens via Virgin Media. “Whatever we’ll do we’ll have a laugh doing it,” Michael Healy-Rae told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “I hope people enjoy it. We get on good together. She’s a very capable lady and knows what people enjoy.” And when pushed as to when it will be brought to TV screens, he said that hopefully it’ll be ready by early 2020. “It is coming together. Hopefully it’ll be ready for early next year.” Speaking of his strong friendship with Lucy Kennedy he said they get on like a house on fire. “There’s no airs and graces about her, that’s why we get on so well.”

The row centres on the medical licences issued to Civil Defence volunteers. Two major events in the Killarney area currently in the advanced planning stages could be effected by the issues. Killarney and District Motor Club’s Historic Rally, set for November 30 needs six ambulances and 12 Emergency Medical Technicians to comply with its safety plan. Organisers of Quest Killarney, the multi-discipline adventure race set for October 12, uses a combination of Civil Defence and commercial providers to cover their event. The Civil Defence is a recognised training institute by the Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC), volunteers are certified from Cardiac First Response (CFR) to Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) through the Civil Defence. The national body answers to the Department of Defence. A new administrator at the Department of Defence is refusing to sign-off licences for PHECC volunteers. It is understood that the department fears liable and insurance-claim repercussions. If volunteer staff cannot get their PHECC licences signed-off by department officials senior Civil Defence staff have told the Killarney Advertiser that they will have no option but to remove staff from

313,000 viewers watch Michael and Davy on RTÉ | By Michelle Crean A youngster from Killarney racked-up over 313,000 views and was trending on Twitter with thousands calling him ‘inspirational’, following the screening of his RTE documentary on Monday night. ‘When Michael Met Davy’ was shown at 6.30pm, and documented Michael O’Brien’s appearance on the Late Late Show last November, where he met his hero, Wexford Hurling Manager,

Davy Fitzgerald. The youngster, who is visually impaired, was also invited to give an inspirational talk to the Wexford Hurling team, as well as given a trip to Croke Park for this year’s All-Ireland Football Final. Croke Park tweeted ‘‘Dream Big’ is Michael’s motto and we couldn’t agree more. We can’t wait to welcome Michael to #CrokePark on All-Ireland Final day for the game and a VIP tour of the GAA Museum and Stadium. What a true inspiration he is to everyone!’ The programme is currently available on the RTÉ Player.

events in September and will be unable to allocate medical staff to events later in the year. Event organisers have the option of booking commercial ambulance providers at a substantial extra costs or face cancelling their event altogether. This weekend alone, Kerry Civil Defence is providing medical cover for the three days of Puck Fair, two nights of the Listowel Revival Festival and the Dingle Triathlon. September events in the county that could face problems unless the issue is resolved include the Listowel Harvest Festival, the National Hillclimb Cycling Championships and the homecoming parades should the county football team be successful in winning the All-Ireland football championship. “We are the capital of tourism in Kerry and my staff attend around 120 events a year,” Kerry Civil Defence Officer, Thomas Brosnan, told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am hopeful of a resolution but in reality the Taoiseach, as head of the Department of Defence, needs to get involved in this. August 31 is make or break, this has been going on since last November and we have been given previous extensions but I can’t see the department giving another one. Our volunteers want to be involved in these events and I want them there, but if we don’t get our licences I will have to stand them down.” Event organisers pay the Civil Defence a nominal fee for services provided. Alternative cover is available from commercial ambulance providers at much greater costs.

The arrest followed the presentation of the dud notes in two separate premises in Killarney on the Friday of the Bank Holiday weekend. Gardaí also said that an attempt was made to pay with a fake €50 note in a shop in Killarney last Saturday.

“There were a number of dud €50s in circulation last weekend. We are asking retailers and shopkeepers to be vigilant,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “This kind of thing happens sporadically but on this occasion we were able to respond quickly and identify the person who we believe was responsible.” The woman was released without charge and a file is being sent to the DPP on the matter.

M&S staff help keep town clean and litter free Staff members from the Killarney branch of Marks & Spencer joined Killarney Tidy Towns in their efforts to make the town a cleaner and more welcoming place for the local community to enjoy.

NEW ADVENTURES: Kerry Macra are organising new activities every month as part of a new initiative. Pictured were: Caitriona Shanahan, Robert Lucey, Alison O'Connor and Katie O'Sullivan. Photo: Michelle Crean

Exciting months ahead for Kerry’s rural youth!

Kerry Macra have plans to improve the overall health and well-being of its members by beginning a new monthly themed initiative – starting this month. ‘Get Active this August!’ is the first initiative to kick start the campaign, set up by newly appointed Rural Youth Officer, Katie O’Sullivan. “Each month will have a new theme which aims to improve the overall health and well-being of members and hopefully non-members too!” Katie told the Killarney Advertiser. “’Get Active this August!’ kick starts the campaign. The focus this month is to get out and about and get active, and we have the perfect opportunity for you to do so. “On Saturday, August 31, we are inviting all clubs, members and friends to a boat trip on the Lakes of Killarney (€10) and a 5k walk to Muckross House, with the option of lunch after for tea and more chats. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.” Chatting to Katie about her new role as Rural Youth Officer for Kerry Macra, she said that she’s delighted but has big shoes to fill. “This is an extremely important role particularly as Kerry is very much a rural and peripheral county,” she said. “Many

issues face young people in Kerry, such as rural isolation and lack of opportunities. This role provides a platform to have those voices heard on a local and national level, and further provides an opportunity to address these issues. There will be plenty of learning and fun along the way. I have big shoes to fill of the previous Rural Youth Officer, Caitriona Shanahan, but I am looking forward to the year ahead.” And Katie’s work is only just beginning, with some exciting plans in the pipeline. “Kerry Macra will again be involved in the Kerry Mental Health and Well-Being Fest. Last year, we hosted a very successful screening of Pilgrim Hill in the CYMS Hall, Killorglin on World Mental Health Day. This year Kerry’s Mental Health and Well-Being Fest has been extended to two weeks, taking place from October 5-19, with World Mental Health Day falling on Thursday October 10.” For more info, contact Katie on 087 7429207. Also, keep your eyes peeled on Kerry Macra’s Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat for further rural youth updates and the themes for each month.

The volunteer staff members took to the streets of Killarney washing away graffiti, picking up litter and painting public seating, as well as sprucing up the town bridge that leads into Killarney National Park. The team also freshly painted the town benches, which are now free of graffiti. Killarney Tidy Towns are a team of volunteers dedicated to maintaining a clean and safe environment in Killarney. Each year, they celebrate the best local efforts with the annual Killarney Looking Good Awards. “We’re really proud to be coming together as a team to support Killarney Tidy Towns,” Paul Daly, Store Manager of M&S, said.

“At M&S Killarney we care passionately about supporting our local community. Volunteering can make a profound difference, and we believe that lots of small actions from lots of people creates a lasting impact to initiatives that do so much good for people in Killarney.” Killarney Tidy Towns and M&S were connected to work together by Business in the Community Ireland. “We are thankful to the staff of M&S Killarney for choosing to support Killarney Tidy Towns,” Johnny McGuire, PRO with Killarney Tidy Towns, said. “We had lots of work on our agenda this year to make a difference to our town and the support of M&S Killarney is greatly appreciated.”

Organisers of this weekend’s Puck Fair are looking for volunteers to help assist in the running of Ireland’s oldest festival. The three day event gets underway in Killorglin at 6am tomorrow morning with the traditional horse fair. Other major events planned include two parades, one on Saturday and second one on Sunday at 5pm both days. Committee members also need volunteers to help run the fireworks display on Monday night to mark the closing of

the festival. “Car parking will need to be brisk on Saturday morning,” said volunteer coordinator Noreen O’Sullivan. “The two parades are big events and we would need people from around 4pm to 6.30pm both days. If there are people available please let us know, we will always have a job to do at different times in the day, and night, even if it’s for only an hour to cover breaks.” Volunteers can contact the festival office on 066 9762366 to register their interest.

A fishy tail about the Mad Monk Everyone welcomes another fish restaurant in Killarney, but it is amazing how regions, even very near regions, can have completely different interpretations of not just monks, but madness. I am speaking of course about the new restaurant in the Quinlan’s seafood chain, ‘The Mad Monk’ in Plunkett Street. The story behind the new Mad Monk restaurant has nothing to do with Killarney, Liam Quinlan tells me. He told me this because I rang him up to say I had a bit of a crow to pluck with the name ‘The Mad Monk’ and I was going to write about it in the column this week. I had been searching for a strong fishy metaphor, but apart from the old Jewish saying that “visitors, like fish, smell after three days”, I couldn’t think of any. Certainly Quinlans’ Fish does not smell. So crow it had to be, as long as I was not forced to eat it! Now, I do know that in south Kerry the monks of the Skellig were considered a bit “mad”. And in fact, Liam tells me the name is indeed after a mad monk in the Skellig and the whole stock of legends about him. There is an affection for madness in south Kerry. Some of the cable workers on Valentia and Waterville were also considered a bit mad. The term itself is much used - you often hear it around Cahersiveen which is the headquarters of the Quinlans. It often means eccentric to the point of complete irresponsibility, extreme behaviour and people not to be taken too seriously, and given to drinking too much and having a bit of a laugh

at themselves. But in Killarney we had no mad monks. And madness was a fairly serious business. Our monks stood the test of fashion and time and were at all times highly respected. I think of Brother MacCudda, who, after founding the Augustinian monastery on Innisfallen, left and returned after many years to find it all changed - so much so that he lived out his days as a hermit and wise man in the Demesne across from Innisfallen. Neighbours in Rock Road and the old stock of Killarney did the rounds to Clogh MacCudda, as they did to a lot of the holy wells and fonts in Killarney, most of which have been built over at this stage. In any case, I think because of the psychiatric hospital known variously as Finan’s and Finians, which domineered that area of the town, we had a much more nuanced view of mad in Killarney – realising that what was mad today could be sane tomorrow and vice versa. And we sometimes realised that on the odd occasion there was not a whole pile of difference between the so-called mad and those minding them! I’ll give you this example too of how sometimes madness is a matter of taste. When I was a teenager and everyone smoked there was a resident of St Finan’s who had the most

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

peculiar habit of going around in a vest and shorts and walking like the Bodach an Chota Lachtna at an extraordinary pace, with hands flailing out in front down Margaret’s Road, onto Port Road, down the Demense, up through the town and Rock Road, and then later out the bypass. If you happened to be on the wrong side of the wind of him, you were in mortal danger as if the wind didn’t knock you as he passed from the force of the compressed air being released between the tanned arms, you’d get a clip or a thump from his flying hands. Now, if like Brother MacCudda you were away for 30 years and came back to Killarney, you would witness, like that beloved Killarney monk, a great change. You would see great masses of people, men and women, singly and in groups, walking at speed around the town and down the Demesne and out the bypass in vests and bare muscular arms and cycling shorts just like the man we once considered mad as teenagers. Only now, what he had been doing is regarded as the utmost responsible thing to do and the very height of sanity. Mad, how are you! Yes, I realised too the name “Mad Monk” incorporates the tail of the Monk Fish. It was chosen because the Quinlan boats fished around the Skellig and Liam said it has nothing whatsoever to do with the Killarney tradition of much loved monks and was chosen to distinguish it from the High Street premises. Another name was in the mix also, but that was the one chosen. He says he has got compliments on the name – I have no reason to disbelieve him, only I have heard a few murmurings. I suppose at the end of the day, it has got people talking. And there is always a chance of a true Killarney name next time round – given that the restaurant is in Killarney. Anyway, let’s hope the fish stays fresh!

Take the cars out of Main Street I have heard the arguments about Plunkett Street, but really is it high time we pedestrianised Main Street? It has changed radically – and for the better perhaps - since the opening of what has been described as the “super-pub”, Reidy’s. It has brought life back into the town centre in all sorts of ways. But it has also changed the character of the street from one that was strictly speaking shopping and business, to relaxation and a little inebriation. This is in line with the overwhelming tourist and leisure character and economy of Killarney. I have seen people slightly inebriated at around 6pm crossing a street without thinking or looking. Main Street does not look too much like a street - even after a 7 Up. It is all nice paving and monuments and there are no barriers as such. People used to going abroad on holiday will immediately think the place is a pedestrianised area because of the pavement drinking and street furniture. But in the meantime - drivers and walkers beware. We can’t allow the situation which could potentially be endangering our relaxing tourists and locals to continue. The cars need to be taken out.

“Ordain women and married men”

There is a perfect solution to the Kilcummin crisis, and indeed to all other parishes involving the shortage of resident parish priests – ordain women, and ordain married men with young families. It will come to it. It should come to it. There is no good reason a woman should not be a priest. We have female rabbis now, as well as

female imams in the more liberal forms of Islam. And the Protestant religions have long outstripped Rome in this matter, from Elizabeth 1st, a woman head of the Church of England in the 17th century. Why is Catholicism so backward? It won’t happen of course, not under the present regime, until all the wealth of the current Roman church is sold off and their own and theirs looked after.

But in the meantime, Kilcummin has to be supported in what it is about. I have seen much online criticism of the kind that says wake up Kilcummin and smell the coffee, this is the reality of priest shortage. I got figures from the Columba Centre in Maynooth and in 2008 there were 3,091 priests in dioceses, in 2013 the number was 2,746 and this year, 2019

the number of priests in the Catholic Directory is just 1,835. Of course, this kind or drop is the reality without women priests and married priests, and that is accepted. But there are a few unusual and unanswered questions in the case of Kilcummin. Why was it selected? There is a certain belief Firies should have been in the firing line, not Kilcummin.

Ambitious plans under appeal

Ambitious plans for a brewery and whiskey distillery outside Killarney are under appeal to An Bord Pleanala. The appeal by a third party is on the grounds of “fire water retention”. | By Anne Lucey

Over €43,600 raised for Kerry Hospice The Kerry Hospice Foundation is delighted to reveal that, thanks to the support from their volunteers and the generosity of the public across the region, €43,665 has been raised during the two-day Sunflower Days fundraising event, which took place on June 7 and 8. This year marked the 29th year of the fundraising campaign and €739,411 was raised nationally. | By Michelle Crean Every euro raised in every county across Ireland will go directly towards supporting and funding the local hospice or specialist palliative home care service in that area enabling them to continue to provide person centred, holistic and loving care to patients and their loved ones. Funds raised through the campaign will be used by Kerry Hospice to go towards their campaign to raise over €400,000 for the development of a new 15 bed in-patient unit in Tralee. “Hospice Sunflower Days is one of our

main fundraising initiatives during the year, so we are absolutely delighted to have raised over €43,600 for Kerry Hospice,” Joe Hennebery, from the Kerry Hospice Foundation, said. “We would like to thank our network of volunteers who gave up their time to help fundraise over the two days and also our supporters for their continual support and generosity in helping us to raise this much needed funding. We are now looking forward to planning activity for our special 30th year of the Sunflower Days campaign in 2020.”

DONATION: A donation from the Kelliher family, Glenflesk from donations instead of flowers at Maureen Kelliher's funeral of €150 each was made to the MS Society and The Irish Wheelchair Association, who were extremely grateful. Killarney Brewing Company Ltd., Muckross Road, had been given the go-ahead for the total revamp and extension of the former Rosenbluth office building in a large rural site, at Killalee, Fossa on the N72 Ring of Kerry. The plans are for a micro craft distillery, brewery, cask maturation area exhibition area, visitor centre, restaurant and parking to cater for coach as well as private cars. Up to 80 people are to be employed and the centre would welcome up to 900 people a day by 2036, according to the proposal. Kerry County Council granted permission for the revamping of the former glass factory and latterly office building, but attached dozens of conditions including the restaurant must close by midnight. Development levies of over €500,000 are also being applied by the Council be-

fore the development begins. Directors of the project, local business men, told the Killarney Advertiser that €24 million is to be spent on the Fossa project which is essentially an expansion of their existing craft brewery and visitor centre operating on the Muckross Road in Killarney town since 2015. The company produces gin, beer and a number of new whiskeys are planned. However, Aidan Forde director of Torc Brewing Ltd., of Church Close, Muckross has appealed the decision on the grounds “that the application did not deal with fire water retention”. Mr Forde says the escape of an actively burning water-based liquid, firewater, from a building, is a well-known industrial hazard. He gives examples from inner city Dublin in 1875, to the city of Glasgow in 1960 and buildings and property which ignited down-stream in a fire water escape in Kentucky in 2000. Mr Forde says established Irish distilleries have fire water retention facilities.

Half a million visited Muckross House last year Muckross House, Gardens and Traditional Farm is the eight most popular visitor attraction in Ireland - according to new figures released by Fáilte Ireland. The Killarney attraction, the only Kerry mention on the list, attracted 550,649 visitors last year. The most-visited tourist attraction in the country is the Guinness Storehouse which had 1,736,156 visitors through its doors last year. The Cliffs of Moher closely follows in second place with 1.5 million and Dublin Zoo holds the third spot with over 1.2 million visitors. In a separate report issued by the Office

of Public Works (OPW), Ross Castle is one of the most visited heritage sites attracting 103,000 visitors in 2018. Also, this week website www.irelandbeforeyoudie.com named Killarney National Park as one of the ‘10 destinations that prove Ireland is the most beautiful place on Earth’. The site said that ‘located in County Kerry – one of Ireland’s most breath-taking counties – Killarney National Park is true bucket-list material. Home to cascading waterfalls, magical woodlands, cloud-scraping vistas, ancient sites of interest, and heritage attractions, Killarney National Park is a must-see for visitors and Emerald Isle natives alike’

Perfect Therapy celebrates two years in business Perfect Therapy, which opened its clinic two years ago in The Reeks Gateway Killarney, is a new modern, sophisticated rehabilitation and recovery centre with a water rehabilitation facility which is completely unique to Ireland.

The clinic offers physiotherapy, occupational therapy, neuromuscular therapy and other therapies alongside state-ofthe-art hydrotherapy baths and hydromassage amenities. The clinic equipment is very specialist and of the highest hospital grade. It was transported over 2000km to Killarney and puts Kerry in

the forefront of rehabilitation clinics in Ireland. The clinic was set up by Jana Lalikova, a physiotherapist and occupational therapist from The Czech Republic. She came to Ireland 12 years ago, having worked in a large rehabilitation hospital in her home country. In this time, she

has worked in private practice and with sports teams including Dr Crokes and the Kerry team. She says she saw a niche in the market as there was a huge need for hydrotherapy in Ireland. “Water rehabilitation therapy is widely used in Europe as it can considerably cut patient’s expected rehabilitation time,” Jana told the Killarney Advertiser. “The clinic in Killarney works with individuals, team and in cooperation with several hospitals.” Jana is joined by Gabi Wolreiter, Kevin

Prunty and Una O’Donoghue. Gabi is registered with Ireland's Neuromuscular Therapist Register (ANMPT) and specialises in neuromuscular therapy, sports and rehabilitation massage, lymphatic drainage, dry needling, cupping and Kinesio Taping. Kevin is a senior lecture with the National Training Centre (NTC) and is currently completing a masters in neuromuscular therapy. He was resident club therapist for Monaghan United FC for six years and is currently working for Killarney Celtic. Una is a registered reflexologist. Eco-charity concert planned in Killarney | By Michelle Crean St Mary’s the Church of the Sloes is staging a charity concert in aid of eco-charities in Kerry next week. St Mary’s is bringing back to Killarney the modern setting of St Francis of Assisi’ ‘Canticle of the Sun’. The concert, ‘Canticle of Creation’, takes place on August 15, at 8pm with the majority of proceeds going to Transition Kerry. The piece is a musical setting and performed by Vincent Kennedy (trumpet) accompanied by Marina Cassidy (harp). The sponsors, Muckross House & Gardens Trustees, Killarney Park Hotel with the Ross Hotel, Randles Hotel with the Dromhall Hotel, have graciously provided

for the publicity and other costs of staging the event so the whole of the ticket sales will go to charity, explained Archdeacon Simon J Lumby. “It is fitting that we have this concert now, to draw people’s attention to the honour and respect in which our world is held by that most Celtic of the European saints: Francis,” he said. “The encouragement of this Canticle links beautifully with the upcoming season of creation during which we focus our undivided attention on the way in which we, our actions and behaviour impact upon creation. The lifestyle of humanity has already used up this years’ allocation of our world’s resources! We’ll need 1.7 worlds to keep us going at this rate.” Marina Cassidy is a well-known and wellloved performer and attracts a wide rang-

ing audience for locals and visitors alike. "The rich, pure quality of her soprano voice and her ability to interpret her material, musically and emotionally, combined with her craft as a harper, weaves a magical web which catches us all within its spell.” Vincent Kennedy was commissioned by the Franciscan Order in Ireland to compose the piece and it has been performed at the Friary, in Dublin and Kinsale. “Vincent is an internationally renowned composer and conductor who has written symphonies, cantatas, concertos, and works for practically every type of performance from solo to symphony orchestra with chorus. His music is played worldwide.” Tickets on Eventbrite and on the door €20.

Kerry Airport targets Wait almost over for French connection Leaving Cert students Kerry Airport officials want to bring passenger numbers back to 2010 levels - and routes to and from France is their preferred option.

AIRPORT: Conor Hennigan is actively seeking new routes for Kerry Airport.

Nine years ago 430,000 passengers used the airport. More recent figures show that 360,000 passengers used the airport last year. In 2014/15 it was as low as 300,000. Airport officials, while unable to confirm exact routes, told the Killarney Advertiser that they are actively in talks with Ryanair and other airlines about bringing new routes to Kerry Airport. Ryanair currently flies to six destinations, London-Luton and London-Stansted in the UK, Frankfurt-Hahn and Berlin-Schoenefeld in Germany, as well as seasonal summer flights to Faro in Portugal and Alicante in Spain. Aer Lingus, through its Stobart Air subsidiary, services Dublin on a daily basis allowing tourists and locals connect with more international flights from there. Back in 2010, the airport had a regular Ryanair-operated Liverpool service and Manchester was covered by Aer Arran. Stansted operated daily, sometimes twice daily during peak times, but is now reduced to five-days per week service. Conor Hennigan runs a hospitality consultancy business in Fossa and in that role acts as a Route Development Consultant with the airport. “Our ambitions are to grow the numbers and grow the sustainability of each route,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Our partners are Ryanair and Stobart Air/Aer Lingus. We are looking at other carriers but we have to be mindful of our partners when we do talk to other carriers.”

FARO CHANGES

Even this week’s news that Ryanair is to close its Faro hub next year, resulting in the loss of one of the airport’s summer destinations is not of huge concern as figures for this flight and Alicante show that there is demand for sun flights and that should be enough for Ryanair to offer a new route to an alternative sun

destination from Kerry Airport. “Ryanair is a key partner of Kerry Airport and we are actively looking for new services,” added Hennigan. “Faro has become an expensive destination and people like to move around and go to new destinations rather than going back to the same place every year. We are hopeful that Ryanair will look at the figures and offer an alternative service in Portugal to suit the Kerry community.” Summer sun routes are a success story for the airport and are operating at around 90 percent capacity through the season but they are only bringing Irish holidaymakers, especially from the southwest, out of the country to the sun but are not really bringing tourists back in to Kerry. The Berlin route is performing better than expected, Kerry people are travelling in their droves to the famous German city and locals there are arriving in high numbers to Kerry. A surprise bonus is that Polish people living in Kerry use the flight in much the same way as Kerry emigrants to London keep the Luton flight busy. While Mr Hennigan would not be drawn into what exact routes the airport is targeting, he said there would have to be a business case that would confirm interest from Kerry travellers wanting a new destination and travellers there wanting to come to Kerry. “This is a minimum requirement with any airline,” he added. A continental European hub is on the airport’s radar, recent political commentary has suggested Amsterdam/ Schiphol, although Hennigan would not be drawn on the subject either.

FRENCH AMBITIONS

Tourism Ireland figures show that 32 percent of French visitors that arrive in Ireland via traditional routes like Cork and Dublin Airport or the ferry ports in Rosslare, Cork and Dublin end up in Kerry at some stage during their visit to the country and a direct link from Paris to Kerry would be one such route that the airport may be interested in. “On France, our research with the help and support of Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland stated that in 2017, 32 percent of French holidaymakers visited Kerry which was the joint highest percentage of any key European market to Kerry (Germany also had 32 percent) and above the Mainland Europe average of 25 percent to the county and this is one basis for a business case,” he added.

The wait is almost over for over 60,000 Leaving Cert students as the results are due to be issued to the Class of 2019, a day earlier than usual, on Tuesday next, August 13 with CAO first round offers following on Thursday, August 15.

This can be an anxious time for students and parents. Above all else it is important to remember that while there is a lot of talk about grades and points, by

completing the Leaving Cert (traditional or Leaving Cert Applied), students have reached a milestone. Regardless of what results are achieved, there are plenty of options available to students and lots of decisions to be made in the coming weeks. This year there is a tighter schedule around appealing results and the release of the outcomes of appeals. Consequently it is crucial for students and parents to be aware of how the process works and what the key deadlines are.

RESULTS & APPEALS – KEY DATES TUESDAY, AUGUST 13 Leaving Cert results will be available in schools in the morning or through a secure online service at www.examinations.ie from noon. Students who wish to use the online service must register to do so. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14 Students can apply online only through the candidate self-service portal to view their examination scripts from 9am. The application service is open up to Friday, August 16, at 5pm. THURSDAY, AUGUST 15 CAO will issue round one offers to students online at 2pm and minimum points required for each course will be available on www.cao.ie. FRIDAY, AUGUST 16 Students who wish to view one or more of their Leaving Cert scripts must return the form which accompanied their Leaving Cert results to their school, stating which papers they wish to view. TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 20-21 Leaving Cert students who are unhappy with a grade and have applied to view their exam scripts may do so in school at a specific time over the two days, which will be assigned by the school authorities. FRIDAY, AUGUST 23 (5.15PM) Closing date for receipt of acceptance of CAO round one offers. FRIDAY, AUGUST 23 Students who have viewed their script and decide to appeal their result must submit an application online at www.examinations.ie to have the paper remarked. A fee of €40 applies per subject, which is refunded in the case of an upgrade. WEDNESDAY AUGUST 28 CAO will release round two overs to applicants. FRIDAY, AUGUST 30 AT 5.15PM Closing date for receipt of acceptance of CAO round two offers. WEEK OF 16TH OF SEPTEMBER Results of Leaving Cert appeals will be released by the State Exams Commission. Final offers of places from the CAO will be made following the release of appeal results.

SECOND-CHANCE MATHS EXAM

Several Universities and Institutes of Technology now run an alternative maths exam for students who do not meet the required grade in maths in their Leaving Cert results to satisfy minimum or specific entry requirements. The exams take place at various dates in the different institutions after Leaving Cert results are issued on August 13. Students must register online on the college websites to sit the exams, where details of the time, dates and layout of the papers can be found, as well as sample papers.

ALTERNATIVES TO CAO – FURTHER EDUCATION & TRAINING

Students who complete the Leaving

Cert and don’t opt for courses through the CAO have plenty of choices available to them. For details on the extensive range of apprenticeships available see www.apprenticeships.ie. Traineeships are also an ideal option for applicants who are more interested in work-based training or who wish to up-skill in a particular area. See www.kerryetb.ie/further-education-training/. Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,

Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues

RIGHTS OF WAY

A Right of Way is a right for one land-owner to gain access to his or her land or passing over property owned by a third party. This is very common in rural Ireland where very often pockets of land are intertwined amongst a number of land-owners. It is therefore a common feature of agricultural lands but also dwellings that have been built abutting the roadways that have not been taken in charge by the local authority. A road or laneway is taken in charge by the local authority when it becomes formally responsible for its maintenance or upkeep and is formally adopted as a road in charge

A right of way can be established either by Long User or by way of agreement. Traditionally generations of landowners have gained access to their lands by passing and repassing over an access by way of continuous use without interruption. In addition to this a right of way can by agreement be granted by one land-owner to the other. Traditionally for conveyancing purposes if a right of way was not registered on a land-owners title a Declaration of Long User would be furnished to show that the land-owner gave access to his lands for a period of twenty years without interruption. The Land Law and Conveyance Act, 2009, has attempted to simplify the area of rights of way. Under the 2009 Act, a person can claim a right of way if they can prove continuous use for a period of twelve years. Initially the Land and Conveyancing Law Reform Act, 2009, set a deadline of the 30th of November 2012 for rights of way to be registered. This has been amended and extended under the Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2011, which

has extended the deadline for registration until the 30th of November 2021. The procedure at present has therefore been simplified in respect of the registration of rights of way. In the event that the parties agree to register a right of way an application form together with a marked Land Registry Compliant Map can be lodged to the Property Registration Authority together with payment of a fee and the Property Registration Authority will register the right of way. In the event that the land-owner claiming the right of way does not have the formal consent of the servient land-owner, an application by way of Affidavit can be filed with the Property Registration Authority together with Land Registry compliant map on a payment of a fee. The Property Registration Authority shall notify the servient owner and if no objection is received within a set period of time, the right of way will be registered. In the event that the right of way is contested, provision is made for a Court application to seek a Declaration confirming the existence of a right of way The application to the Property Registration Authority is due to cease on the 30th of November 2021 and thereafter it appears that a Court application shall be necessary. It is therefore important to take advantage of this more simplified procedure before the deadline and to contact your solicitor in order to have same completed without delay. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Ireland’s Good Governance Awards launched in Killarney

Ireland’s Good Governance Awards was launched in Killarney last week to help shine a light on the work of non-profit groups in rural Ireland. A key message at the launch was that small and medium sized rural groups deserve to be at the forefront of initiatives that empower and give national recognition to Good Governance. Now in its fourth year, the awards, which take place in November, recognise the efforts of groups to improve their governance and on the quality of groups’ annual reports. As such, there are applications for two award types each having five entry categories. Geraldine O’Sullivan, Manager of Kerry Volunteer Centre and a member of the GGA judging panel, highlighted that in an era of increasing regulation, statutory reporting and volunteer burn out, groups are feeling fettered and fearful. “It has never been so important that the stories of small and medium sized com-

munity and voluntary groups be told,” she said. “It is imperative that their concerns, challenges and their voices are heard. Volunteers are the heart of rural Ireland. Their impact deserves to be valued, and their capacity to comply with good governance needs to be invested in. This is why Kerry Volunteer Centre along with its peer volunteer centres in Munster have partnered with Carmichael and Yellow Harbour because we are determined to endorse, encourage and empower our local and rural based community groups and not for profits.” She added that Munster based volunteer centres are already delivering governance-based training. The closing date for submissions via www.goodgovernanceawards.ie is September 13.

Niall and Karragh rock the night away

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

24

Niall O’Neill from Milltown and Killorglin’s Karragh Concannon celebrated their wedding day in style at the Rose Hotel Tralee on Saturday.

After a civil ceremony at the hotel, the happy couple and their family and friends partied the night away. Nearly 180 guests, some who came from Boston, USA and Newcastle and London in England joined the fun - but the most-special guest of all was their 15-month-old daughter Maisie. “The wedding was two years in the planning,” said Niall. “And Maisie arrived in the middle of it adding to the fun.” Karragh’s sister Sinead was the appointed Maid of Honour, while Norma O’Neill and Katie Concannon were her bridesmaids. Niall’s friend Sean Clifford acted as Best Man, with support from his brothers Kenny and Ray. The couple’s interest in classic cars was

marked too, with a rare Lancia Delta Integrale parked on display outside the hotel for the duration of the celebrations. “That was my bother Kenny’s car,” added Niall. “The hotel supplied a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. In fairness, the hotel staff were brilliant. We could not fault the food or the venue.” Music was provided by Limerick band, The Prophets. “They are more of a rock band really,” Niall added. “So we had plenty of rock ‘n roll all night.” Niall and Karragh will delay their honeymoon until October when they will spend a few days in Miami before joining a cruise ship to Mexico.

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

A gardening challenge worth taking on Water features are a wonderful way to add sound to any type of garden. The trickle of water is calming, or the clatter of a small waterfall can be energising. Water features come in all shapes and sizes - from self-contained waterfalls, glazed terracotta bowls to solar powered fountains, the list of ready to install and turn on water features is endless. However, for many gardeners, creating a pond is a challenge worth taking on. Depending on the size, it can be done in a day, and it can cost as much or as little as you like. There are several types of ponds. There is the informal pond fed by a stream and surrounded by a bog garden, or there are formal ponds and rills. Informal ponds are relatively easy to build. You can buy a precast pond liner, which are durable but costly. To install, just dig a hole a little larger than your preformed pond liner. Put a layer of sand in the bottom and place your liner into it. It is easier to backfill with sand but the soil you dug out will also do. The other option is a flexible pond liner, EPDM rubber is best. It can be bought in different widths, but remember to take the depth of your pond into account when measuring! If you wish to grow water lilies, or keep fish, a depth of at least 70cm is necessary. Again, start by digging your shape, then make sure there are no sharp stones sticking out. You can line the hole with old carpet, or

rockwool, before placing the liner in. It is advisable to create shelves at different heights, both for growing different types of aquatic plants, as well as making it easier for frogs etc. to climb out! Formal ponds are slightly more difficult to construct. They are usually symmetrical shapes, made from concrete and edged with bricks or paving stones which may match a patio. Again, start by digging out the shape, then pour in concrete for the base. Place shuttering around the sides and fill with concrete. Depending on the size you need, use wire mesh to prevent cracking. Once the concrete is fully dry you will need to paint it with a water proofer. A bog garden can be created around the natural pond, again line it with plastic or rubber, but make sure the water can drain away. Choosing plants for ponds is very exciting. There are beautiful waterlilies in many colours, floating plants and oxygenators. For a healthy pond it is important that about 70 percent of the surface area is covered, this prevents blanket weed and other algae from thriving. It also creates hiding places and shade for any fish you may have. Moving, oxygenated water also prevents the growth of algae, and small submersible pumps which will do that job, have become relatively cheap. Pumps are also used to transport water upwards, so that a waterfall, or drop, can be created. Almost a year for hearing test Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry, John Brassil, has slammed the unacceptable waiting lists for people in Kerry to get a hearing test. Deputy Brassil was commenting as the HSE confirmed to him that there is currently a 49 week wait for an adult audiology appointment in Kerry. “Unfortunately while this is disappointing it is not surprising as lists across the country are similar,” he explained. “However, given the deterioration in hearing that can occur over the course of a year, I believe it’s completely unacceptable. I understand that the team in Cork-Kerry adult audiology services are working to the best of their ability and under serious constraints, the Government must resource them better. Now more than ever people are aware of their health, it’s why we are living longer. We get regular checkups to monitor blood pressure and cholesterol and evaluate risks for cancer, diabetes and heart disease. We should be approaching our hearing the same way but when there is a year-long delay, it’s easy to see why it can drop off the radar.

Hearing aids are an expensive but very necessary investment for some people, he added. “They can be life-changing for many and offer a much better quality of life. As with most ailments, early treatment can help prevent future issues. Discovering and treating hearing loss sooner rather than later can ultimately improve overall health – that’s why a 49 week delay is unacceptable.”

Katherine Center's ‘Things You Save in a Fire’ is a heartfelt novel about life, love, and the true meaning of courage. Cassie Hanwell is one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to uproot her life and move to Boston, it's an emergency of a kind Cassie never anticipated. The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie's old job as it could possibly be. A lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren't exactly thrilled to have a "lady" on the crew, except for the handsome rookie, who doesn't seem to mind having Cassie around. But she can't think about that because she doesn't fall in love. However, Cassie can feel her resolve slipping...but will she jeopardise her place in a career where she's worked so hard to be taken seriously?

Both of the bands played a concert together, but soon after Murphy departed from the band after the release their EP ‘Hey!’ on 16 October 2015, leading to Night asking Gariano, Chavis, and Morando to join. The ‘Hey!’ EP was eventually discovered by a representative at Warner Brothers, which would eventually lead to them signing the band.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Killarney DJ for Rose of Tralee ‘80s night The Festival Dome has been the venue for many memorable nights out for locals and visitors during the history of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, and this year’s top night out will celebrate the sound of the 1980s, on August 24.

Ireland’s first charity air ambulance is live

Ireland’s first charity air ambulance service came into service last week. The service, ICRR Community Air Ambulance being led by Irish Community Rapid Response (ICRR), went live on Tuesday, July 30 and has already been

Trump CORNER

called into service via the HSE National Ambulance Service 999/112 call system. ICRR has committed to paying for the

helicopter, pilots, fuel, and the airbase near Millstreet in Cork. A formal ministerial launch will take in the coming weeks, and ICRR will also launch a major public fundraising drive. The community-based service will need to raise €2m annually from the public to remain operational. The air ambulance is expected to respond to 500 calls or more per year, and bring the population of a 10,000 square mile area within 20 minutes of critical medical care.

Abbaesque, Ireland’s top tribute act to the legendary ABBA, and Killarney’s favourite DJ Botty, will bring a night of fun and nostalgia to the Festival Dome. “This is a night not to be missed. We’re going back to the future with a non-stop night of hits from Wham to The Communards to The Cure, to the Boomtown Rats to Duran Duran. The list is endless. Anyone who grew up in that era has the babysitter booked so they can relive their youth with friends in the Festival Dome,” John Drummey, Communications Manager for the Rose of Tralee International Festival, said. Tickets are only €15 plus booking fee from www.roseoftralee.ie, the Rose of Tralee Office on Denny Street, or at the door on the night. “Everyone loves a special offer and to celebrate the excitement around the ‘80s Night in the Dome, the organisers are offering a free ticket for every five tickets purchased,” John added. Doors open at 9.30pm, so arrive early to get your table.

Trump’s visits to Dayton and El Paso lack compassion President Trump showed again this week that he just does not get it. On Wednesday, he visited Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, the two towns reeling from mass shootings over the weekend, where 31 people lost their lives. Trips like this are meant as a show of compassion, reaching out to the towns that suffered great losses. These trips are about the victims, law enforcement officials and hospi-

tal workers. They are certainly not about political one-upmanship or self-promotion. “We had an amazing day,” he told reporters in El Paso. Of his earlier stop in Dayton, he said, “The love, the respect for the office of the presidency — I wish you could have been in there to see it.” To be fair, it was not entirely about himself and despite the above comments he did take time to thank the police and ambulance crews. “But all over the world, they’re talk-

ing about the job you’ve done as police, as law enforcement, as first responders,” he said in El Paso. “The job you’ve done is incredible, and everybody is talking about it. And I wanted to come and thank you because you’re very special people. Nobody like you. There’s nobody better. There’s nobody like you.”

Lidl first retailer to offer reusable bags for fruit and vegetables Lidl Ireland has become the first retailer in Ireland to introduce reusable fruit and veg bags across all 162 stores. LONDON CALLING: Professor Michael Mythen has been named as the Kerry Association London’s Person of the Year.

London Kerry Person of the Year announced Professor Michael Mythen has been named as the Kerry Association London’s Kerry Person of the Year. Monty, as he’s been known since medical school days, is the son of Johanna (Joan) Fitzgerald of Lispole and son of the late Nick Mythen of Curracloe, County Wexford. Joan’s parents were Tom Fitzgerald of Lispole and Nel O’Brien originally of Dúnquin. Joan left Lispole for London in 1948 to join the first wave of Irish nurses to work in the new NHS. As a child Monty used to spend his summer holidays in Dingle each year and remembers with fondness helping his uncle, the late Senator Tomás Fitzgerald, pull lobster pots, and working for his Uncle Pat (Paudie Fitzgerald) in his store, Fitzgerald’s on Main Street. While training at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School 1979-1984, Monty organised a memorable medics rugby tour to Kerry and when his own sons, Patrick and Tom were playing mini and youth rugby for Ealing RFC he organised three rugby tours to Kerry playing teams in Tralee and An Gaeltacht. Back in the 1980s, Monty became an early investor in Kerry Airport and more recently with his sisters, became an investor Dingle’s Distillery. In 1998, Monty had the idea of organising a medical conference at the Dingle Skellig Hotel bringing anaesthetists from all over the world to Kerry. With fellow anaes-

thetists from University College Hospital London and the organisational expertise of his late sister, Siobhan Mythen, the Dingle Medical Conference was born and became so successful that it became an annual event. It is now in its 21st year and has attracted more than 3,000 delegates. Over the years delegates have got a real flavour of the Gaeltacht with a reception each year at the Blasket Centre, dinner at Dingle restaurants, entertainment by local Irish dancers, yacht racing in the bay, golf at Ceann Sibéal, Ballyferriter and walks to the South Pole Inn in Annascaul. “We’re delighted to have such an accomplished winner in Prof. Mythen this year,” KAL Chairperson Tom O’Sullivan said. “Not only distinguished and renowned worldwide in his own field of medicine, but his contribution to Kerry over the decades has been invaluable – be it from his early investments in Kerry Airport through to launching a leading medical conference in Dingle – and truly underscoring the values of the association and its membership across Kerry born and further London born generations of Kerry associated people.” Monty will be presented with the award at the KAL’s annual gala dinner on October 18 in what will be a fantastic evening of craic and Kerry connections with Daithí Ó Sé as MC and appearances from Portmagee comedian Bernard Casey, and many more.

Lusitania diver in airlift drama A Coast Guard Helicopter (R116) has airlifted a diver who was reported to have suffered a diving illness approximately 12 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale to Galway University Hospital. The diver is understood to have been diving at the wreck of the Lusitania. The diver received initial medical attention

at Cork University Hospital before being transferred to the Galway based recompression facility. The operation was coordinated by the Valentia-based Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Centre. On scene support was also provided by the Naval Ship LE George Bernard Shaw who initially recovered the diver from the sea and by Courtmacsherry Lifeboat.

Available in September, the reusable fruit and veg bags are designed to give customers a sustainable choice and reduce plastic use and waste in the long term. The Green Bags, priced at 99c for two, provide customers with an affordable, reusable alternative to single-use, small fruit and vegetable bags. “We are delighted to be the first Irish retailer to introduce reusable bags for loose fruit and veg for our customers. This announcement is the latest step on our journey to tackle the important issue of plastic waste,” said Deirdre Ryan, Head of CSR at Lidl Ireland. “We have already implemented several plastic

waste reduction initiatives such as our recycling stations in stores, ending the sale of many single use plastic items and the removal of unrecyclable black plastics from numerous categories across our range.” In April, Lidl Ireland become the first Irish retailer to offer customers in-store recycling stations nationwide to reduce packaging waste bought in-store. Last year, Lidl also discontinued the sale of single-use plastic items including drinking straws, disposable plates, cups and cutlery, with plastic-stemmed cotton buds next on the list in the coming months. For the second consecutive year the company confirmed it had achieved zero waste to landfill and announced an end to microbeads in all cosmetic and household ranges.

New public positive mental health programme for Tralee Aware, Ireland’s national charity supporting people affected by depression, bipolar disorder and mood-related conditions, is to host a new positive mental health programme, free of charge, in Tralee next month. Aware’s ‘Life Skills Programme’, takes place over a period of six weeks and is open to people aged 18 years and over. It is estimated that there are more than 450,000 people in Ireland who experience depression at any one time, while there are approximately 45,000 people diagnosed with bipolar disorder. “The ‘Life Skills Programme’ is designed to give people insights into how we think and how this can influence our actions in both helpful and unhelpful ways,” Bríd O’Meara, Aware’s Director

of Services, said. “Based on the principles of cognitive behavioural therapy, each session is guided by our trained facilitator to help people better manage the stresses of everyday life, learning to spot unhelpful thoughts and discovering new and healthier ways of thinking. It is important to emphasise that confidentiality is the bedrock of the programme and nobody is asked to share personal information or experiences. The results speak for themselves with evaluations showing participants experiencing reduced levels of anxiety and improved mood on completion of the programme.” The programme, which is open to anyone wishing to learn new ways of dealing with life’s ups and downs, gets underway at the Rose Hotel, Tralee, on Monday September 9, at 7.30pm.

THE POWER OF ADVERTISING “Since moving to Killarney from Wales in 2016, I was always aiming to start up my own independent physiotherapy clinic. Since making the jump in August of 2018, the success of my clinic so far has in no small part been down to the team at the Killarney Advertiser. I was really surprised at the number of enquiries that come through the advertiser. With their advice and support my clinic is going from strength to strength and is worth every penny. I would highly recommend anyone considering doing advertising, to do so with the Killarney Advertiser team. Thanks again!.”

How quickly will I see results? A lot of times I get asked how quickly will I see results, and the short answer is I can’t tell you. So many factors come into play and genetics accounts for a very small percentage of that. What I can tell you is how quickly you feel the result. After all, we are aiming for long term health and not instant fixes here. CrossFit is so potent that you feel the results of a workout pretty quickly, but roughly how long until I see the result that I’m after? Consider that it takes 61 days to create a habit and if you train four days a week that’s a potential 32-40 hours of training. Providing your nutrition is balanced and in line with your goals (more posts on this soon), you have a good coach

by your side to ensure you are working smart and keeping you accountable, and rest as you should - will you see the results? Of course, I guarantee it. Commit to yourself. Literally say to yourself, ‘I’m going to do this for 60 days no matter what’. It really is that simple. Now you’re in an amazing position to keep momentum and stay focused on your goals. However, I’m at pains to tell you that your initial 60 days is just the beginning - there are no shortcuts - if there were, it would just be “The Way” wouldn’t it? Find something you enjoy and you’re more likely to stick at it. Often, taking the first step is the hardest one you will have to do. Be patient, the results are coming.

Prepare early for Third Level costs With the latest round of CAO offers out later this month, Killarney Credit Union is advising parents and students to call in now to discuss their college finance options. With the average cost of living for a student in Ireland studying away from home for three years amounting to over €33,000, and those living at home amounting to €20,502*, the credit union is recommending that parents call in and speak to a dedicated student loans officer to discuss their needs. “With the first round of CAO offers out on August 15, there is pressure on parents and students to quickly organise accommodation, pay student contribution charges and meet the array of costs associated attending college,” Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer with Killarney Credit Union, said. “We are recommending that parents and students come in early, discuss potential college finance needs and provide the necessary loan documentation. The member can then obtain pre-approval for the student loan, and they need not draw it down until it’s required. The amount may also be adjusted later to suit the student’s course duration or college attended.”

Killarney Credit Union have put in place dedicated student loan officers for the month of August who can meet parents and students by appointment in each of their branches, she added. Appointments can be made with Karena in the Beech Road branch, Donogh in the Park Road branch, Eileen in the Kenmare branch and Elma in the Cahersiveen branch. “Remember, you can apply for a student loan early and collect it when you need it and then begin paying it off,” Helen added. “We have useful budget sheets available on our website which can help parents in calculating the costs of attending college.” Killarney Credit Union is also offering a Third Level Bursary Award of €4,000 for those attending college for the first time. Application forms are available on www.killarneycu.ie or in any branch. Closing date is Friday, September 27. *Source: Cost of Third Level Survey, ILCU, August 2016

Peugeot most popular van in Kerry last month Ford topped the sales charts for county Kerry in July, with 314 new Blue Ovals hitting the roads.

BIG ENTRY: Ted’s annual Vauxhall and Opel run always attracts a huge entry. This year’s run celebrates 30 years of the Opel Calibra.

Annual Opel Vauxhall run this weekend Ted's annual Opel Vauxhall Run, taking place this Saturday and Sunday will celebrate 30 years of the Opel Calibra. Organised by well-known Macroom-based Opel enthusiast and motorsport photographer, Ted O’Connell, the run will raise money for the Dogs for the Disabled charity. The run will start at 10am tomorrow (Saturday) from the Mill’s Inn in Ballyvourney, just over the county bounds. The scenic route will visit the Top of Coom, Kilgarvan, Kenmare, Priest’s Leap, Ballylickey, Sheskin Viewing Point, Drimoleague and Inchigeela before re-

turning to the Mills Inn later that evening for a gala dinner/dance and prizegiving. “As always we are continuing our association with the Dogs for the Disabled charity who will be benefiting from the event,” Ted, who is a senior member of the Vauxhall Opel Club Ireland, said. “We also have the support of Opel Ireland, cartell.ie and Casey Caravan Services which makes the running of the event possible. Come and join us for some good craic and nice cars, all Opel/Vauxhall/GM cars welcome old or new.” For further information contact Ted on 086 3256751 or email tedsopelvauxhallrun@gmail.com.

July figures are now rated second only in importance to January sales following the introduction of the new registration plate system six years ago. In total, 501 new cars were sold in the county last month, 101 less than the corresponding figures for July last year. One of the issues of introducing a new plate in July is that sales for June are almost non-existent, with just 24 new cars sold in the entire county. In terms of individual models sold, the Hyundai Tucson remains the most popular car in the county with 104 version sold in July. People carriers and Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) remain the most popular

segment with Kia’s Sportage (89 sold) and Ford’s Kuga (81 sold) taking up the next two places on the table. Toyota Corolla is the fourth most popular new car on Kerry roads, with 81 new models sold. One of the best barometers of the economy in general is van sales as trades and other businesses invest in the future. Last month 114 new vans hit the roads of Kerry, the same figure as 2018 with Peugeot’s Partner (available from Reen’s Garage Rathmore) the most popular with 70 versions of the van now registered in Kerry. In total, there are 539 new vans on local roads, a drop of some 6.26 percent compared to this time last year. The local Ford dealership is Killarney Autos on Park Road. BESTSELLER: The Peugeot Partner van, available from Reen’s Garage Rathmore, is the county’s bestselling commercial vehicle

Cannonball coming back to Killarney The official route for Cannonball 2019 has been announced and it is confirmed that the supercar spectacle is coming back to Killarney this September, for the first overnight pitstop of the event. The last time the large Cannonball event came to Killarney was 2011 when thousands lined the streets to welcome the largest road trip in Europe and 190 of the finest cars on the planet. In July, there was a smaller Retro Cannonball event which brought classic cars to the stunning driving routes around Tralee and Killarney, but now the super

cars are ready to make an entrance once again to the Kingdom and thousands will flock to Killarney from home and abroad to see the spectacle and enjoy this free family event in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. Cannonball will start at Malahide in Dublin this year on September 6, at 10.30am and then blaze a trail through Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Mayo, Sligo, Meath and Offaly. Fans will meet the drivers and celebrities and get up close and personal with the world’s top mark cars such as McLaren, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, Maserati, Rolls Royce and Bentley.

Killarney Athletic seeks volunteers for rapidly expanding soccer club A local soccer club is witnessing rapid expansion at such a pace that they’re in dire need of volunteers. | By Michelle Crean

Killarney Athletic AFC Soccer Club is hoping to recruit coaches, managers, and volunteers to travel with teams, or even for those that feel they don’t have a sporty nature can help make tea and sandwiches on match days. Child welfare courses and Garda vetting will be arranged, Chairperson Geraldine Nagle explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “Every team trains at least once a week. Any commitment volunteers could give, any bit of help at all would be great. Once you get in it, you’ll love it.” The club, founded in 1965 by Garda Don Harrington, had massive success on Saturday at the DBS Sports Cup in Dublin at U12 level. “They were the first club ever to win it at any age outside of Dublin,” she said. “Killarney Athletic 1-0 V St Kevin’s Boys, what an achievement for these young Blues.” The first underage Academy was set up in 1992 for children from U10 upwards. The club organised the first ever FAI Soccer Clinic in Kerry in 1992, now known as Summer Soccer Camps, which was held in the hallowed grounds of the “Áras” pitch. Irish Internationals Paul McGrath and Mick McCarthy visited the ground at the time to add their support of the event. “In 1993, we moved to Woodlawn where our wonderful and scenic grounds have continued to develop. Our modern clubhouse and two grass pitches have been augmented with the opening of an All-Weather training pitch in September 2018.” The club are most proud to have produced six players who have been capped by Ireland and played at International level – two of whom subsequently signed professional contracts. Michael Moloney became the first capped Schoolboy International Player from Kerry in 1990. Bryan Murphy was the first club player to play in the League of Ireland and also played for the Irish Universities in the World Games in 1995. Diarmuid O’Carroll was capped for the Irish U15s and signed for Glasgow Celtic in 2003. Brendan Moloney was capped at underage level and signed for Nottingham Forest in 2005. Michael ‘Smiler’ Moloney was capped on numerous occasions for Irish U15

and U16 teams in 2003/04. And Ronan Murphy was also honoured with Irish Schoolboy International caps and was part of the Nottingham Forest academy for a year in 2010. “We have enjoyed a lot of success over the years especially last season when competing in six Cup competitions and winning three of them in the U12 Cup and U12 Shield and U13 Cup. Our U13s and U14s also won their respective Leagues. Our U11 team reached the final of the Bernardo’s Cup.” Killarney Athletic have an underage Academy catering for children from six years to 10 years with almost 100 children receiving coaching from qualified coaches, she added. “There is also an U11 age grouping who receive coaching from qualified coaches and while not competing in a competitive league play games against other teams within the county on a bi-weekly basis. “During the past season, we had eleven underage teams, including two girl’s teams, competing in the U12, U13, U14, U15 and U16 categories in the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League, in both League and Cup competitions. “Girls soccer is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and we had teams competing in U12 and U16 league. Numbers continue to grow in this area.” Killarney Athletic also cater for senior soccer and have teams in U17, Youths and two senior teams. “With the opening of our all-weather pitch in September 2018, proving hugely beneficial to the club and its underage teams, it has also resulted in increased numbers participating and playing. The AWP has been fully booked out Monday to Friday from 5pm to 10pm for training purposes since its opening. Our motto is “Unity is strength…. where there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved”.

Killarney resident scores top marks Killarney resident Declan Bennett has scored top marks in the country in the Diploma for Accounting Technicians programme this year. The Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI’s) qualification, offered full or parttime, is open to the countless number of people who have been working in industry or small practice firms for years, but have no formal training, school and college leavers and mature students. Bantry native Declan has been living in Killarney since 2003, and always wanted to transition to accountancy after a career in financial services. “I worked in banking until about six years ago and since that I have been self-employed in risk and compliance work,” said Declan. “I was drawn to the Accounting Technicians course because of its flexibility. It also gives me options with professional bodies,” he said. “It deals with the bricks and mortar elements of accountancy and it allowed me it to get to grips with it again. The course requires a good work ethic, but you get out of it what you put in. I am very much looking forward to the practical elements of year two.” Over 70 colleges around the country offer ATI’s flexible courses which allow students to obtain this professional qualification in as little as two years. Online courses are also available. The accounting qualification provides access to employment opportunities for a broad range of accounting and finance roles and will enable students to further progress to senior financial management posts. Accounting Technicians are qualified accounting professionals that work at all levels of finance throughout the private and public sector, industry and commerce and in accountancy practices. Accounting Technicians can perform a wide range of finance roles, from ac-

counts staff to financial controller and beyond. For instance, they can do financial accounting and budgeting, costing and credit control, payroll administration and tax returns. More experienced Accounting Technicians may often perform senior managerial tasks and audits. The two-year Diploma for Accounting Technicians programme is also the first step to a full qualification in accountancy. “This is a pan-sectoral qualification which meets the needs of industry, practice and the public sector, and graduates enjoy exemptions from the full range of professional accountancy bodies including Chartered Accountants Ireland, ACCA, CPA, CIMA as well as Higher Education third level accounting programmes,” said Gillian Doherty, ATI’s Chief Operations Officer. “We will be discussing skills to advance with employers at the Open Days, and other vehicles by which their staff can lend more benefit to their respective organisations by attaining our qualifications. “Many businesses finance the programme for potential Accounting Technicians – recognising the benefits of having a qualified technician run the financial side of the business while the owner develops the entrepreneurial end.”

At the July meeting of Kerry County Council, Councillor Michael Gleeson called on Rialtas na h-Éireann to focus attention in international forums such as the United Nations and the EU on the ongoing organised maltreatment and sometimes murder of members of Christian communities in many counties throughout the world. Councillor Gleeson stated that many Christians of various denominations are regularly persecuted and it is estimated that close to 250 are killed every day because of their religious beliefs. The United Nations has proclaimed August 22 as International Day For Victims Of Violence Based On Religion, all religions. A United Nations spokesperson has stated that close to 80 percent of the world's population live in religiously restricted countries. Indeed there are countries where there exists genocidal intent for followers of certain religions including Christianity. The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, was an exemplar to the world by the manner in which she stood tall and brought hope, healing and reform to her country following a brutal massacre in a Mosque there, he said. “Given Ireland's long history of volunteering and of missionary work in other lands it would appropriate that our Government should speak loudly and clearly for respect for the religious beliefs of all.”

YOUR

WEEKEND

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

The magnitude of this fixture has been overstated at times. After all, how intense can a rivalry be between two teams who have play just six times in the history of the championship, and just twice in the last 10 years? Even in the noughties, at the height of the enmity, Kerry and Tyrone met in the summertime on just three occasions. However, the fact that Tyrone won all three of those encounters at a time when Kerry had such a good team was understandably of great annoyance in this part of the world. I think the players were particularly offended by the prevailing notion that Kerry were being outmuscled and outfought by the Ulstermen. As an intercounty footballer, how could that not get under your skin? Having said that, Kerry won five All-Irelands between 2000 and 2009. Tyrone won three. So, even though Tyrone had the measure of Kerry in that period, Kerry had the measure of everyone else, including the teams who had the measure of Tyrone. So there.

2012

I suppose a modicum of revenge was gained in 2012 when Kerry beat Tyrone in the qualifiers in Killarney. The match was notable for the savage intensity on the field – 16 yellow cards and one red were dished out by referee David Col-

drick – but there was plenty of mutual respect off it. For most of us, the abiding memory from that day was the warm reception afforded to Mickey Harte by Kerry supporters as he and his players left the stadium and made their way by bus down Lewis Road. Just 10 days prior to this fixture, two hotel workers had been acquitted of the murder of Harte’s daughter, Michaela McAreavey, in Mauritius. The Kerry fans’ kind gesture was appreciated as such at the time, not least by Tyrone GAA who penned a heartfelt ‘thank you’ on their official website. “Long after the thousands had left Fitzgerald Stadium last Saturday evening our Tyrone team was getting ready for a bitter journey home,” the note read. “Around 500 Kerry people remained outside the changing area – men and wom-

en, old and young. As our people started to board their coach a ripple of applause met them. That ripple grew and grew and for long minute after long minute just went on and on and on. “When Mickey Harte appeared, a cheer of support went up. As the coach headed down through Killarney hundreds on the pavements took over where the others left off, warmly applauding Tyrone. There is no doubt that Ireland lost a lot and took a lot of wrong turns in the last few years. But if you wanted your faith in decency, respect, honour and dignity restored, then Killarney at about eight o’clock last Saturday evening was the place to be. “Inspirational. Unforgettable. Classy.” Unfortunately, the positive vibes seem

to be lost in the mists of time for former Tyrone player Seán Cavanagh who took a bizarre swipe at Kerry fans in his recent column in the Irish Daily Star. “They were back slapping us, 'ah youse are great lads,' and all that," he recalled, “to me, it seemed a wee bit patronising.” Maybe Cavanagh has good reason to think that some people in the crowd were taking the piss out of him, as un-

HEAD-TO-HEAD likely as that might seem given the circumstances. If anything, maybe it reflects the level of antipathy players from Cavanagh’s generation felt towards their Kerry counterparts at the time, and vice versa. Perhaps to Cavanagh’s mind the rivalry was so fierce there was no way that Kerry fans could genuinely be applauding them. But look, that’s all a long time ago now.

CLIFFY’S BACK

Kerry will name their team for Sunday’s game tonight (Friday) and the good news is that David Clifford is expected to recover from a back spasm that kept him out of last weekend’s victory over Meath. Considering how well the rest of the forwards have been playing, and with James O’Donoghue an injury doubt, Peter Keane is unlikely to change a whole pile in this department. Micheál Burns, who was a late replacement for Clifford last time out, might be the one to make way for the 2018 Young Player of the Year with Seán O’Shea reverting to centre forward. I thought Burns got a bit of a raw deal against Meath. The Crokes man was replaced by his cousin, Dara Moynihan, in the 31st minute and whatever about taking a fella off, the timing for me was a bit strange. Keane is certainly ruthless, which isn’t a bad trait in a bainisteoir, but it’s hard to justify taking a forward off just four minutes before half-time. Fair enough if a corner back is getting cleaned out, a change might be necessary. But as a forward, getting whipped before the break is a tough one to take. It has happened to me and it’s an awful dent to the confidence (although, to be fair, I probably should have been taken off earlier). You wouldn’t expect many changes in defence or midfield but given his recent form, veteran defender Shane Enright could be in contention to start. With Dublin facing Mayo in the other semi-final (Saturday at 5pm), you could hardly ask for a better weekend of football.

MINORS

Kerry’s hunt for an unprecedented sixth All-Ireland minor title in a row continues on Sunday as James Costello’s side take on Connacht runners-up Galway in Croke Park. The Kingdom extended their five-andhalf-year unbeaten run at this level by defeating Tyrone 1-12 to 0-9 in the quarters and with talented forwards like Jack O’Connor (Beaufort), Dylan Geaney (Dingle) and Emmett O’Shea (Fossa) leading the line, they will be hoping to do the business again this weekend. Kerry v Galway will be a curtain raiser for the senior match with throw-in at 1.30pm.

Jack Sherwood is tackled by Tyrone's Peter Harte during the National League clash in January. Kerry won by 0-11 to 0-7.

SPORT

9.08.2019

McCarthy “thrilled” to add Martínez and Cuff Quick on the heels of last week’s signing of American Aaron Jackson, the Scotts Lakers have strengthened their hand once again by adding two exciting talents to their roster.

Captain James Curran (front centre) presents the winning trophy to Renaldas Bendikas (second left). 21 players qualified for the playoffs on Sunday with Bendikas just about fending of Donal Considine (second right) for the title.

Bendikas pips Considine in Curran's Captain’s Prize It was a day of high drama at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club on Sunday as Renaldas Bendikas emerged victorious by the finest of margins in James Curran’s Captain’s Prize. | By Adam Moynihan Bendikas was joint fifth heading into the nine-hole playoff but he shot up the leaderboard thanks to an impressive tally of 20 points. His overall score of 59 equalled that of Donal Considine but Bendikas secured the prestigious title thanks to his superior scoring over the course of the last nine holes. Anthony Curran finished third with Denis Carroll fourth and Shane O’Sullivan fifth. All three had 57 points. Further down the field, David O’Callaghan, David Hartnett, Eric Dunlea and Keith McMahon had 55 points each while Barry Fraser, James Devane and Peter ‘Head’ O’Brien finished on 54. An upset appeared to be on the cards earlier in the day when 26-handicapper Gary Kerrisk posted an impressive score of 46 to enter the playoff in first place. Unfortunately, the Killarney man was unable to keep up his high scoring into Sunday evening and Bendikas, Considine and co. took control of the leaderboard on the back of some fine shooting. 411 men competed in the Captain’s Prize with 110 women participating in the ladies tournament. With a number of junior and guest players also taking part, a staggering 596 golfers participated in the event in total, making it the biggest Captain’s Prize in the club’s history. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Captain James Curran said he was delighted with how the weekend panned out. “It was brilliant,” he said. “We got great support from the members and we had a super night on Sunday. Midnight Café from Tralee were playing and there was

a big crowd, which was great. “We had beer and a burger on the 14th hole for every competitor and Paul Cotter served 600 members over the three days. We also had our bi-annual visit from Southerndown Golf Club in Wales, which added to the celebrations.” As for the competition itself, Curran congratulated all of the players, especially those who made the playoff. “Gary Kerrisk had a four-point lead after the first round but unfortunately he didn’t perform as well in the playoff. Donal Considine, playing off 2, had a massive score of 41 points. He shot a 69 on Saturday evening. “Unfortunately he blanked the 17th in the playoff and he was just beaten by Renaldas, who had 20 in the playoff to Donal’s 18.” The club captain said Bendikas, a 7-handicapper who hails from Lithuania, is a very active member. “Renaldas has been a member for a couple of years. He’s a very active member and a lovely fella.”

The Lakers have announced that 6’5” Spanish all-rounder Victor Martínez will be signing on a Bosman, while former UCC Blue Demons star Carlton Cuff will also join up with the squad. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Coach McCarthy said he is “thrilled” with the signings. “Although Victor is young at 20 years of age, he’ll bring a lot of experience with him,” the Cork native said. “He has played in the top leagues underage in Spain all the way up and that usually translates well to the Irish game. “His height and shooting capability will be a serious asset to the team. Also his length will disrupt defensively as he is able to defend point guards through to centres. “Victor is really excited about playing with Killarney. His agent played here in Ireland before and he recommended him highly. We hope Victor will arrive in the next two weeks.” As for Cuff, McCarthy is confident that his know-how will help the team when they need it most. “Carlton brings a wealth of experience from his days at Blue Demons where

he won every trophy available multiple times. Carlton is a guy who will add grit to the team and he can also defend every position on the floor. “His experience will be a huge asset to the team, especially when we go on the road for some tough games throughout the season.” The Lakers will get their new campaign up and running in September.

Talented Killarney athlete Denis Finnegan claimed his 10th national triple jump title at the Irish Life Health National Senior Track and Field Championships in Santry last weekend. Finnegan, who hails from Muckross and competes for An Ríocht Athletics Club, emerged victorious with a jump of 14.74m ahead of Antony Daffurn of SRL AC (14.65m) and Mark Burton of City of Lisburn AC (14.49m).

Incredibly, this is Finnegan’s eighth national triple jump title in a row. He now holds the record for most triple jump titles in nationals history. On the back of his latest triumph in Morton Stadium, the Killarney man has once again been selected for the Irish team that will compete in the European Team Championships in Norway. The tournament takes place this weekend (August 9-11). Denis works as a pharmacist and lives in Melbourne, Australia, where he trains with a number of elite level athletes.

Nagle takes one for the team on WRC return | By Sean Moriarty

Killarney’s Paul Nagle marked his return to the World Rally Championship and his debut appearance for the works Hyundai team by taking seventh place on Rally Finland. Nagle and his driver Craig Breen would have beaten Hyundai team leader Thierry Neuville into sixth place but for a 20-second road penalty which left the

Belgian 5.8 seconds ahead of the Irish pair. However, the 20-second penalty was a team tactic and ensured Neuville and Hyundai a brace of World Championship points. It was Nagle’s first WRC outing since Rally Portugal in May 2018. “This has been an amazing rally, I have to say,” Breen said. “To have the opportunity to return to this level of rallying has been very special and I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has made it possible. I have enjoyed myself immensely as part of the Hyundai Mo-

torsport team, and I was immediately comfortable in the car. We knew the job we had to do this weekend, and I think we’ve achieved that; it’s been a privilege to play our part in the team’s championship efforts.” Breen and Nagle set several top-three times over the course of the weekend, proving that they are more than capable of mixing it with drivers who have been competing full-time on a world level over this season. The Killarney/Waterford pairing made history by becoming the first crew from the Republic of Ireland to drive

a works-entered car on a round of the World Rally Championship. Several members of Killarney and District Motor Club were in Finland to support the Irish crew, including club chairman Diarmuid Cronin. Next up for the Kerry/Waterford pairing is next Saturday’s Ulster Rally where they could wrap up the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship.
