Killarney Remembers Legendary Clubman John Kelly The town of Killarney was united in grief this past week following the untimely passing of popular Spa native John Kelly. A devoted family man and a stalwart of numerous associations and clubs, it was Johnny’s incredible dedication and loyalty that set him apart as a truly remarkable man. In 1966, he was part of the first ever Spa team to win an O’Donoghue Cup and his great love for the GAA never waned over the years. The former club Chairman also served as PRO for over 40

years and gave great service to the East Kerry Board, acting as Chairman, PRO and, most recently, as President. The Kerry seniors also benefitted from his fierce commitment as he worked as a masseuse for Páidí ó Sé’s team between 1997 and 2004. John was passionate about rowing and pitch and putt and remained active within the Killarney Regatta, Workmen’s Rowing Club and Deerpark Club throughout his life. His involvement with so many sporting organisations meant John was a

constant contributor to the Killarney Advertiser. He was a tireless worker no matter who he was representing and we had the pleasure of witnessing that on a weekly basis. Killarney Advertiser Director Cormac Casey said he would be sadly missed. “Johnny was a friend of the Advertiser and of the Casey family for as long as I can remember,” he said. “He was probably our earliest ever club correspondent for the Killarney Notes. We always enjoyed working with him on various projects over the years. Johnny had very kind words for us on our 30th birthday celebrations when he spoke on Frank Lewis’ radio show, which is something we always appreciated.” Following his death on Monday,

Spa GAA and the East Kerry Board were quick to offer their condolences. “Heavy heart today,” Spa said in a statement on Twitter. “Sad news that John Kelly, former club Chairman, East Kerry GAA Chairman and Kerry GAA delegate has passed away. RIP.” In a statement, the East Kerry Board said they were “shocked and saddened” at the news. “We wish to extend our sincere sympathies to his wife Sheila, his family and his many friends at his beloved Spa GAA… John was widely known and highly regarded, and his induction into the East Kerry Hall of Fame was well deserved. May he rest in peace.” John is survived by his wife Sheila and their five children.

Dáil Row:

Healy-Rae “Knows The Rules”

Advertiser ney lar

Speaking exclusively to the Killarney Advertiser after he was involved in a heated exchange in the Dáil, Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae said that he “knows the rules”. A rowdy argument erupted between Michael, his brother Danny and Sligo-Leitrim TD Marc MacSharry (Fianna Fáil) on Wednesday that forced Leas Ceann Comhairle Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher to suspend proceedings. A new experimental system was in operation whereby TDs take a card with a number on it which denotes when they are allowed to speak. If another TD has a question on the same issue they are also permitted to talk, regardless of whether or not it’s actually their turn. The incident started when Danny Healy-Rae asked Taoiseach Leo Varadkar about the ongoing Tuosist farmers debacle. Some farmers had their Department payments stopped

Opinion Words: John Joe Culloty (Chairman, Kerry Right to Life)

when their hills were burned by gorse fires, despite their claims that they didn’t set the fires and, in fact, actually fought side by side with the fire department to put the them out. When Michael stepped in to speak on the same issue, MacSharry complained that some TDs weren’t getting a look in and an unruly quarrel with both Danny and Michael followed. Gallagher, unable to quieten the vociferous politicians, had no choice but to suspend the Dáil for five minutes. Healy-Rae insists that he was within his rights to stand his ground as it was, indeed, his turn, as evidenced by the fact that the Leas Ceann Comhairle called on him to speak upon the restart. “The only people who will silence me,” he said, “are the people who put me in the Dáil in the first place.”

We Must Be The Voice Of Those Yet To Be Born

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to address the contributions made in the news section of February 2, 2018. The writer begins by suggesting that article 40.3.3 of our constitution, also known as the eighth amendment, equates a mature woman to an egg (writer’s words). Article 40.3.3 states “The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and with due regard to the equal rite to life of the mother guarantees in its laws to respect, and as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that rite.” The unborn referred to is not an egg. The unborn referred to is a new and unique human being in its first stage of development. This first stage begins at conception and ends at birth. The truth is, it is scientifically dishonest to say that a new and unique human being at any time after conception does not exist. The truth is that a foetus’ (which means “little one’s”) heart starts beating at 21 days and the “little one” has developed its very own unique DNA by this time. The writer suggests that “it is fear and distrust of women” that is driving the agenda of those who wish to keep the protection of life of preborn babies in our constitution. The real “fear” of most reasonable people is that if this protection is removed, we will go down the same path as England and Wales, where 1 in every 5 pregnancies ends in abortion (and what is being proposed here is even more extreme). The real “distrust” is that if this protection is removed from our Constitution, we will be handing over control of the right to life of unborn babies to our legislators. It is already the stated intention of a number of our TDs to push for late term abortions. It is disingenuous to say that this is simply about not trusting women. Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world, we live in the real world and in this real world we need to have legislation to protect children. We have, for example, the child care act of

1991, the children’s act 2001, etc. When these acts were being debated, I don’t recall anyone saying we should not have child protection legislation and we should trust the parents and guardians of children. It would be safe to say nobody would have suggested removing this protection from any child, regardless of disability or how this child was conceived, nor would anyone suggest removing it from an unborn baby. As we have legal protection for a baby one hour after birth, is it not logical and reasonable to have legal protection for a baby one hour before birth, and then naturally, legal protection at all times during pregnancy. Thankfully, that protection exists in this country since 1983, in article 40.3 .3 of our constitution. The truth is Ireland’s maternal mortality rates are lower than England and Wales and the US (that’s not the impression one gets from the media), and these countries have abortion on request. This is not, as suggested, an issue of straight fear and distrust of women, it is a fundamental issue of choosing between life and death of the unborn. Liberalising abortion laws is not the panacea we are led to believe it to be for women who face the traumatic situation of an unplanned pregnancy. What is required is for the state to provide practical care and support to women, such as more investment and planning in crisis pregnancy services, better perinatal hospice care, better mental health care services, better child care services. In the referendum, which is proposed for later this year, we will have the ultimate responsibility to be the voice of those yet to be born. Let us not stay silent on this. To quote Martin Luther King: “Our lives begin to end the day we decide to stay silent about something that matters”. John Joe Culloty Maria Donnelly Mary Fitzgibbon Anne Keeling

Letter

Have We No Vision?

Sir/Madam, If we abandon the moral imperatives of respecting human life, and if we lose sight of the first principles of the right to life and protection, our ethics will change very quickly from being responsible, doing one’s duty and doing the right thing to doing whatever accommodates our choice. If the “right to choose” will equate with following one’s own conscience, one wonders who will guide and form our ethics and values in such a morally rudderless culture. I find it rather ‘chilling’ that the “right to choose”, the right to die, and the right to do just about everything else is being supported by a sizeable number of our legislators. In the 1990s, Pope John Paul II wrote, and I paraphrase, “A new cultural climate is developing which gives crimes against life a new and even more sinister character: broad sectors of public opinion JUSTIFY certain crimes against life in the name of individual freedom…” Have we no vision? Can we not see that the actual implications and destructive possibilities of the “right to choose” mentality are already revealing themselves in our society? I’m immensely grateful to our politicians and councillors who have publicly voiced their unequivocal support for the eighth amendment. According to Pope John Paul II, “we all have an inescapable responsibility of choosing to be unconditionally pro-life”. “Without vision, the people perish.” Kathleen O’Connor, Killarney

TOWNTALK Cultural Centre Set For €240k Revamp

The Killarney Cultural Centre on the East Avenue Road is to finally be revamped at a cost of €240,000 with half of the cost being provided by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. As well as significant refurbishments to the inside of the building, the outdoor area will be covered with a retractable canopy and will be a flexible area that will seat an audience which can view a show on the internal stage or an external stage. Reaction to the news has been mixed with some people pointing to the larger Áras Phádraig site upon which little progress appears to have been made. Speaking at a Municipal District Council meeting, Town Manager Angela McAllen insisted that the works on the Killarney Cultural Centre would not interfere with the eventual redevelopment of Áras Phádraig and that it would actually

complement it. She also said that the grant was specifically given for the purposes of redeveloping the Cultural Centre and that if it wasn’t used for this project, the money would have to be handed back. Here at the Killarney Advertiser we unveiled a proposal for a state of the art cultural centre on the Lewis Road, which would also help alleviate the town’s chronic parking problem. The suggestion, which was warmly received at the time, was to knock the Áras Phádraig building and develop a multi-storey car park and civic amenity to occupy the site and the adjoining Lewis Road car and coach park. A theatre, café and cinema could also feature – which would be in keeping with the results of the existing feasibility study for the former Áras Phádraig.

Damien Switzer’s impression of our proposed Lewis Road development.

What do you think? Should the council have prioritised the Lewis Road development?

Have Couch, Will Travel (Up Mountains)

Have couch will travel…Killarney Mountain Festival organisers, Maureen Hegarty, Chairperson, Kieran Healy, Killarney Advertiser, Piaras Kelly, Kerry Climbing and local farmer Geoffrey O’Connor. Pics: Valerie O’Sullivan

To say we have a unique Chatroom for you this weekend would be an absolute understatement! Our guests this week are Maureen Hegarty and Piaras Kelly, organisers of the inaugural Killarney Mountain Festival, taking place on March 9, 10 and 11 right here in the adventure capital of Ireland. Early on Tuesday morning, Maureen got in touch to tell us that the snow-capped Reeks were looking incredible and asked the question, “Could we bring the couch up to the foot of Carrantouhill and do the interview there?!” Never one to shy away from a challenge, our own Kieran Healy agreed and plans were put in place for the famous Chatroom couch to be transported up to the foot of Ireland’s highest mountain. With the help of local legend Geoffrey O’Connor and his new

gleaming tractor they made their way up while the amazing Valerie O’Sullivan captured all the madness. Set against a backdrop that’s so perfect it has to be seen to be believed, Maureen and Piaras chatted about the inspiration behind the new festival and all the events they have planned, such as talks, movies, photography exhibitions, demonstration displays, kids treasure hunt, 10km road run, bands and loads more! Maureen chatted about the links they have to the hugely successful Kendal Mountain Festival and how they hope to replicate that success and build this new festival up over the next few years. Because, let’s face it, where better to have a mountain festival then right here in Killarney? You can catch this unforgettable episode of The Cha-

troom on our website killarneyadvertiser.ie and on our Facebook page from 9pm tonight. *No couches were harmed in the making of this video

Darkness Into Light

Walk For Nathan Raises €41k For Pieta House Last year’s local Darkness Into Light event was one of the most successful yet and there were smiles all around at the Porterhouse as the organisers presented a cheque for €41,607 to Pieta House. Inspirational Killarney parents Marie and Denis O’Carroll, who tragically lost their 14-year-old son Nathan to suicide in 2007, have been running the Darkness Into Light event with their family for a number of years and were delighted with how the walk went. “The numbers were up again last year,” Denis said. “It was the only Darkness Into Light in Kerry that was up on 2016’s figures. This year it will be all online registration but it will be the very same format. It’s on May 12 and if you register before May 6, a t-shirt will be sent out to you.” Denis says organising the walk has been good for the O’Carrolls and other families who have had similar experiences. “All the family get involved. It helps us to help other people who are maybe going through the same situation as we already went through. It seems to help everyone. It also raises awareness that there are places, not just Pieta, that can help.” The O’Carroll family would like to thank everyone who helped with and took part in the 2017 Walk for Nathan – Darkness Into Light. Registration for the 2018 event will be opening soon.

Cork Busker Allie Takes US By Storm

12-year-old Cork native Allie Sherlock has signed a five-year record deal with One Republic’s Ryan Tedder. The young singer, who blew people away on Facebook last June when she appeared in a video singing Ed Sheeran’s “Supermarket Flowers” on Grafton Street, has gone from busking at Cork’s Opera Lane to singing on the Ellen DeGeneres Show in LA and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Ryan Tedder, Charlie Puth and Pharrell Williams. After meeting and recording with Tedder, Allie signed a three-album, five-year record deal. Following her appearance on Ellen, Allie was interviewed on ITV’s This Morning Show and the Ray D’Arcy Show. Before Allie’s trip to LA, she had expressed her uncertainty about a career in music but now she credits her time

spent with Tedder for giving her the confidence to pursue her passion: music. Allie also filled Ray D’Arcy in on the advice Tedder gave her and how the trip came about. “He saw my video on Instagram and flew us over to collaborate, which is like songwriting and recording,” she explained. Allie shared pictures of her time in LA on her Instagram, captioning one of her with Tedder: “Had an amazing week with @RyanTedder I loved every minute of it thank you for being so good to me and my dad… Looking forward to working with you xx” With over 290,000 YouTube subscribers and a five-year record deal, I look forward to seeing what the future holds for this talented young songstress. Having had the pleasure of hearing her perform live myself, I can appreciate that she is definitely a star on the rise.

Celtic Hoping For Big Crowd At FAI Clash

Celtic midfielder Matt Keane. Pic: Konrad Paprocki.

An epic battle of titanic proportions beckons on Sunday at Celtic Park as Killarney Celtic and North End United meet to decide who will progress to the quarter-finals of this year’s FAI Junior Cup. The FAI Junior Cup is the Holy Grail of junior soccer in Ireland and is the single biggest knockout tournament in Europe, commencing with 600 teams at the outset. Celtic have a very good pedigree in this tournament reaching the semi- finals last year only to exit on penalties to the eventual tournament winners Sherriff YC. North End United from Wexford are no shrinking violets and have over the last few years been knocking around the latter stages of the competition. They will be arriving in Celtic Park on Sunday hot off the heels after defeating Ballymun United 6-0 in the last round of the competition, and they have also claimed the

scalp of Limerick league toppers Janesboro along the way. Janesboro would have been one of the favourites at the start of the competition. Whilst Killarney Celtic have home advantage you would expect North End to start favourite with the bookies but the in-form Killarney side, who remain undefeated in all competitions thus far this year, will have other ideas about that. As always the support will be a huge factor in these games and manager Eoghan Donnellan has said that the 12th man will be of significant importance in Sunday’s game. Celtic Park is not an easy venue for visiting teams to come to with the huge local support that the team gets. Sounds like it is going to be something special and if last year’s games are anything to go by you can expect a massive turnout in support of the Hoops on Sunday. Kick-off is at 2pm on Sunday. There are strict rules in place regarding the format, dimensions and technical specifications of Vehicle Registration Plates that are displayed on vehicles in Ireland. Registration Numbers are automatically assigned and in sequence at the time when you register your vehicle. Failure to have a Vehicle Licence Plate that conforms to the standards will result in fines. The exact rules regarding this format of Vehicle Registration Plates are set down in Irish Law under SI318/92 as amended. This sets out that the main requirements regarding the format of Vehicle Registration Plates are firstly that the registration number consisting of numbers and letters must be in black and on a white reflective background; the name of the County of registration must be in Irish and the flag of the EU on the letters IRL must be placed on the left hand side of the plate, the flag comprising of 12 gold stars in a circle, the letters in white beneath it and all on a blue reflective background. No other numbers, letters or marks should appear on the Registration Plate. Since January 2013, each year has two registration periods and the sequence takes the form of a separate 3-digit year identifier for the first and second six-month period of each year. Vehicle Registration Plates must be affixed to the front and back of the vehicle and clearly visible at all times. In situations when towing a trailer, caravan

etc a duplicate of the registration plate must be affixed to the back of the trailer, caravan etc. Vehicles with only one front wheel i.e. motor cycles, are only required to carry the registration plate on the back of the vehicle. It is possible to reserve a Vehicle Registration Number. You can only do so on or after the 1st of November of the year before you intend to bring the vehicle into use. The number you reserve must be in the normal format and must correspond with the Licencing Authority area where you normally reside and the year and half year in which the vehicle is to be first brought into use. The registered owner of the vehicle on which the plates are to be displayed must be the person whose name and number was reserved. You cannot transfer a reserved number. To reserve a Vehicle Registration Number, the current fee is €1,000.00. Forms are available to download, to reserve a number. Space

Tesla In Space

You’d think a private company launching the most powerful rocket in the world into space would be enough of a story to make any sort of publicity tricks unnecessary. But Elon Musk isn’t your typical CEO. The philanthropic billionaire’s space exploration company, SpaceX, launched its new Falcon Heavy rocket this week, and with it, an interesting payload: an exposed Tesla Roadster blasting David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’. The flight of the Falcon Heavy has been years in the making, with its success meaning SpaceX will be capable of delivering massive payloads into the great black yonder. While most test flights of this kind would use a concrete or steel block to simulate the mass of a potential payload, Musk wanted to do something less boring. “Of course, anything boring is terrible, especially companies,” Musk said in an Instagram post revealing the Roadster, “so we decided to send something unusual, something that made us feel.” So instead, he’s throwing a car into space. If all goes according to plan, after separating from three boosters, the rocket will discard its payload fairing caps and release the midnight cherry red Tesla Roadster towards a billion year elliptical orbit of Mars. Moving at about seven miles per second, the open top Roadster will be “piloted” by a dummy dressed in SpaceX’s latest space suit as he listens to an endless loop of “Space Oddity”.

Kind-Hearted Students Raise Money For Ian

A charitable group of 5th year LCVP students from Killarney Community College have presented a cheque to Mr Mike O’Connell to assist in the medical costs for his son, Ian, who was involved in a serious accident in August. Ian, a 16-year-old student from Pinewood, suffered damage to his neck and spine when he fell from his bike in the National Park. The St Brendan’s College student has now been transferred from the Mater Hospital to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire, where he

will undergo intensive rehab. The LCVP students fundraised on two separate occasions by holding a bake sale and selling baked goods at the Christmas Craft Fair. A total of €510 was raised and lodged to the Ian O’Connell Fund. Their teacher, Ms Kerri McCarthy, said: “It was a very thoughtful donation from the class group. It’s wonderful to see the kindness shown by our students towards a student and friend in another school in our community. We hope to complete more fundraising events in the future”.

The family and friends of popular Gneeveguilla native Ian O’Riordan, who died by suicide in 2013, have raised a massive €6,265 for Southwest Counselling. Ian’s family and friends got together this time last year and organised a 5km walk on what would have been his 21st birthday. They decided to wait until today, his 22nd birthday, to release photos of the cheque presentation. “We were delighted and overwhelmed with the support we received,” said Ian’s mother, Eileen. “Our hearts will forever be broken but to mark Ian’s special day and to aid Southwest Counselling was very important to us.”

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Kerry Babies:

Gardaí To Check DNA Samples In UK Detectives hoping to make headway in the controversial Kerry Babies case have announced plans to scour the UK’s DNA database, which contains over six million samples. Ireland’s database is far less extensive than the UK’s and consists of just 15,000 samples. So far attempts to find matches to Baby John’s DNA in Ireland have proved unsuccessful and Gardaí believe there may be a possibility that one or both of his parents moved to the UK in the wake of the tragic murder. They are particularly interested in examining samples from the North as many people moved there from Kerry in the 1980s. Examining such a huge database should increase the possibility of getting a DNA ‘hit’ on distant relatives of the people who are Gardaí are looking for. It is thought that Baby John was just five days old when he was killed. The infant was found by a jogger at White Strand beach, Cahersiveen, on April 14, 1984. He had been stabbed 28 times and also suffered a horrific spinal injury.

Trump Corner

Trump Aide Quits Amid Abuse Allegations White House staff secretary Rob Porter has resigned after domestic abuse allegations made against him by two ex-wives surfaced on Wednesday. Porter, who was one of President Trump’s closest aides, denies the accusations and has described them as “outrageous” and “simply false”. “I took the photos given to the media nearly 15 years ago and the reality behind them is nowhere close to what is being described,” he said. “I have been transparent and truthful about these vile claims, but I will not further engage publicly with a coordinated smear campaign.” The photos to which he refers were published in the Daily Mail and apparently show Colbie Holderness,

Never fails to entertain

Porter’s first wife, with a bruised eye. His second wife, Jennifer Willoughby, told the same publication that she had to get an emergency protective order due to Porter’s abusive behaviour. Porter is a Harvard graduate and former classmate of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. He also went attended Oxford University and spent two years as a Mormon missionary in London. Porter isn’t the first Trump aide who has been forced to leave his post in light of allegations about his private life. Former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, former security advisor Sebastian Gorka, former communications director for the White House public liaison Omarosa Manigault Newman, and Anthony Scarumucci, the foul-mouthed former White House communications director also all left their posts prematurely.

Earliest Irish Settlers Had Dark Skin

Genetic experts have revealed that early Irish populations probably had dark skin, similar to the Cheddar Man discovery made in the UK this week. Cheddar Man is a fossil that was found in 1903 in Gough’s Cave in Somerset. It’s believed that he lived shortly after the first settlers crossed from continental Europe to Britain at the end of the last ice age. People of white British ancestry alive today are descendants of this population. It was initially thought that Cheddar Man had light skin but the results of a new project strongly suggest that he had dark skin, dark curly hair and blue eues.

Speaking on Morning Ireland, Dan Bradley, professor of Population Genetics at Trinity College Dublin, said that a project with the National Museum of Ireland has made similar findings for that of the earliest Irish populations. “The earliest Irish would have been the same as Cheddar Man and would have had darker skin than we have today,” Bradley said. “The current, very light skin we have in Ireland now is at the endpoint of thousands of years of surviving in a climate where there’s very little sun. It’s an adaptation to the need to synthesise vitamin D in skin. It has taken thousands of years for it to become like it is today.”

Chinese Police Now Using Surveillance Sunglasses Half Of 3rd Class Students On Social Media

A survey on cyber safety has revealed that 49% of third class students have a social media presence. This number rises to 83% by sixth class and 94% by first year in secondary school. The research also found that over a third of 8 to 13-year-olds rarely or never talk to their parents about online safety. Of this group, over 34% are in regular contact with a stranger online, and 50% use social media and messaging apps that are meant to be inaccessible to users aged under 13. The figures were published by the organisation CyberSafeIreland to mark ‘Safer Internet Day’. The aim is to highlight the im-

portance of parents engaging in their children’s online lives in order to keep them safe online. “Children are exposed to a variety of risks online, as has been highlighted in recent press coverage surrounding some very disturbing cases,” said Alex Cooney, CyberSafeIreland’s CEO. “It is essential that any child who has access to the Internet, especially when they are young, only does so with guidance and supervision from a parent or carer. “We urgently need a National Parents Campaign, much like we have had over the years for road safety and healthy eating, to provide guidance and support to parents and to create social norms around safe online use.”

Bermuda Backtracks On Gay Marriage

The British overseas territory of Bermuda has become the first country in the world to repeal same-sex marriage. The Atlantic island legalised marriage between homosexual couples in May of last year but a new Domestic Partnership Act, which has been approved by Governor John Rankin, will cancel out that earlier decision. The new act will allow ‘partnerships’, which government officials say carry equivalent rights to marriage. According to Bermuda’s minister of home affairs, Walton Brown, the majority of Bermudians do not agree with gay couples marrying.

He said: “The act is intended to strike a fair balance between two currently irreconcilable groups in Bermuda, by restating that marriage must be between a male and a female while at the same time recognising and protecting the rights of same-sex couples.” Prime Minister Theresa May said she was “seriously disappointed” about Bermuda’s decision to abolish same-sex marriage. But she added: “That bill has been democratically passed by the Parliament of Bermuda, and our relationship with the overseas territories is based on partnership and respect for their right to democratic self-government.”

Police in China have started using sunglasses equipped with facial recognition technology to identify suspected criminals. The glasses are connected to an internal database of suspects, meaning officers can quickly scan crowds while looking for fugitives. But critics fear the technol-

ogy will give even more power to the government. The sunglasses have already helped police capture seven suspects, according to Chinese state media. Police used the new equipment at a busy train station in the central city of Zhengzhou to identify the suspects.

Warning:

Bread May Contain Metal Johnston Mooney & O’Brien were left red-faced yesterday when they were forced to admit that their bread products with a best before date of February 11 may contain small pieces of metal. All such products are being recalled and any potentially affected packs have been removed from the shelves. Anyone with a bread product that may be affected can return it to where it was

bought for a full refund. They can also send the empty packaging with their name and address for a full refund to Johnston Mooney & O’Brien, 11 Jamestown Road, Finglas, Dublin 11. The company has apologised for any inconvenience caused by the recall but said it believes it is the most appropriate course of action, however slight the risk might be to consumers.

Twitter Announces First Ever Profits Social media site Twitter has posted the first quarterly profit in the company’s 12-year history. Net profit was $91.1m in the fourth quarter of 2017, compared with a loss of $167.1m for the same period a year ago. Although it has made consistent losses since it became a public company in 2013, Twitter executives now expect to make profits for the full year of 2018.

The failure of the San Francisco company to turn a profit for over the past decade had confounded investors given its widespread use and popularity among celebrities and politicians such as US President Donald Trump. In a letter to shareholders, Twitter said it had stepped up efforts to reduce spam, automated accounts known as bots and fake accounts which meant they lost users in the US and overall user growth stalled.

She is an integral part of the day to day running of the Killarney Community College.

A busy few months are in store for a group of dedicated volunteers of Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage as the club restore a battered 1989 Land Rover Defender which has been off the road for several years, and which will be given a whole new lease of life all in the name of charity. Club members are devoting their time and know-how to the exciting restoration project and they hope to have the project completed in April and to raffle the newly restored vehicle over the summer months. The restoration is a huge project for the club to undertake and the costs involved will be quite substantial but the intention is to afford the perfect finish to the restored jeep which has only 82,000 miles on the clock. “We are calling on anyone who would like to get involved and help out with this project to get in touch,” said Tom Leslie. “The costs involved are growing as we get deeper into dismantling the jeep but hopefully we will get a few more sponsors to come on board, no matter how big or small a donation will go along way. “Our members meet every Thursday evening from 7pm to 9pm to work on the jeep with a cup of tea and a chat afterwards. It will be an enjoyable and interesting charity project to get involved with and a great way of meeting new people who share similar interests. Everyone is welcome to call to the Kerry Mental Health building on Lewis Road – the old Ross Products building – any Thursday night to see what is involved.” “We are always looking for more members to join the club and get involved and if anybody is interested in the restoration of jeeps or cars and can offer any advice, we would be delighted to hear from them.” said Tom. Members are looking forward to overseeing the full service of the vehicle, the full restoration of the chassis, the full respray of the body parts and the extensive cosmetic facelift of the interior without the vehicle losing

any of its original character. The project managers for the Land Rover restoration are committee members James Looney and John Coffey, who have vast experience in the car industry. The Club were delighted with last year’s charity project which involved the full restoration of a battered 1968 MF135 Tractor which raised a huge amount of money for local Kerry charities. The Club would like to thank Dermot Healy of Dermot Healy Motors Ltd, Mallow Road, Killarney, who has now come on board as a main sponsor for this year’s project and support has also been kindly received from Humphrey Kerins Crash Repair, Premier Auto Parts, McElligott’s Land Rover in Tralee, Castleisland Tyre Centre, Reen’s Garage Rathmore, Stryker Abbeyfeale, Killarney Oils & Seamus Weldon in Barleymount. “It is great to have their support and the backing of our club’s project as it would not be possible to restore this jeep without it” said Tom. Anyone interested in getting involved or helping out with the project can contact Tom Leslie directly on 087-2383809. 2018 Club Membership for Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club is now open and costs €15.00 to join for year and €35.00 to join the Club and the Irish Vintage Society Ltd. You can contact the Club Secretary on 087-3381842 for further information or call to Jacqueline Looney at Killarney Glass, Woodlands Industrial Estate for a Membership Form. A “Meet & Greet” has been arranged for Sunday the 18th February next at the Kerry Mental Health Building and Ross Café, Lewis Road, Killarney at 10.30am – membership will be available and a chance for the public to see the Land Rover Jeep in its current condition. The Club would like to congratulate James Looney who has taken over as Chairperson for 2018 and a special thanks to Tom Leslie who has done a wonderful job as Chairperson for the past five years.

Netflix - Coach Snoop

Justin Timberlake: Man of the Woods Justin has gone back to his roots in some ways. Timberlake once again reunited with Pharrell, something he hadn’t done since his 2002 debut solo album Justified. He also sought production help from Danja, Timbaland, The Neptunes and Max Martin, who helped take Man of the

Woods, well, out of the woods. Timberlake instead focuses mainly on the soul and funk-tinged pop that made his career, with hints of Memphis in-between. Man of the Woods does make certain that Timberlake will never stop challenging himself to enter into new territory.

On The Box

Is there no end to Snoop Dogg’s talents? Rapper, actor, mogul, cooking chum of Martha Stewart and now there’s Coach Snoop, an entire Netflix series following his involvement with a youth football league. In 2005, Snoop Dogg and a group of partners founded the Snoop Youth Football League (SYPL) in downtown Los Angeles. The goal was pretty simple: keep kids off the streets and give them instructions for what to do when things

get difficult in the real world. The idea for the league stemmed from Snoop’s upbringing in Long Beach, CA. As Snoop explains in the introduction of the first episode, he grew up surrounded by gang violence. He watched friends and family members get killed and he wanted to use some of his influence to keep that from happening to others. The first season of “Coach Snoop” is currently steaming on Netflix and consists of eight episodes. It is definitely worth checking out.

Top Tips for First Time Communion Moms At Mods & Minis we know that choosing the perfect Communion dress can be both exciting and a little daunting! Don’t worry, you are in the steady hands of experts and we’ve got some great top tips to guide you along the way: Start your search as soon as possible- We realise April/ May, may seem like a lifetime away but in the communion dress world, the search begins in October. Surprising we know, but the dresses arrive in store from the beginning of October so start early to avoid disappointment! “But what if she grows?” Uttered by every Mother in despair, at the thought of their little girl ending up with a mini dress after a growth spurt following your dress fitting. A great rule of thumb is to give half an inch for every six months. In general, this works great and all our team recommend this to

everyone buying for the special day. But be confident you know your kids best, maybe they are due a growth spurt, in which case you might want to increase the amount of room, or maybe they shot up like wild flower this summer and you are confident they will not be getting much taller again for a while. Either way our team are here to help and will be ready in store to advise you as best we can. Extra socks or tights is a must. Always buy two, because believe me, if you have only purchased one pair this will be the pair the tumble dryer decided to gobble up, or those tights will be the tights that snag the morning of the big day. (Not to mention splatters from those muddy puddles left over from the April showers) Its always best to have a backup pair, ready to go. Try on everything– I cannot tell you the amount of

times we have had families who were convinced just looking at the hanger that they had found the perfect dress, however the dresses look so different on. Something you may not think much of on the rack may be the perfect dress on your little communion girl! The top tip is to try on everything, even dresses you think you don’t like, I guarantee you will be surprised, and if nothing else you get to try on as many ‘princess dresses’ as you can. Be comfortable- When she’s trying on her dress, be sure she sits down. Your little one will be standing, kneeling and sitting in the church, not to mention all the fun during the celebrations after, so make sure she is comfortable. With countless photos inevitable for the day, we want to make sure your little girl is as comfortable and confident as possible.

A Picture Paints A Thousand Words SPECIAL moments captured on camera in an album of your child’s Communion or Confirmation will be something they will treasure forever. These portraits tend to come alive to the viewer, sparking wonderful memories even years after the occasion and capturing the magic of this monumental occasion in a child’s life. If you are hiring the services of a photographer or bringing your child for a studio session to capture the big event on camera for posterity, then do your research. Some photographers specialise in First Communion and Confirmation portraits and photography. You could check with your photographer in advance to see what sort of style you seek. You may seek a traditional studio photoshoot, or reportage-style shoot, outdoors. Each portrait session is personalized to the individual first communion recipient or confirmation candidate, typically yielding over a dozen unique shots.

Give a child a gift to cherish SEEKING the perfect gift for children making their Confirmation or First Holy Communion? If your child, godchild, niece, nephew, grandchild, or family friend is about to celebrate this landmark occasion, then a present that they will cherish for a lifetime would be very welcome. While money has been a traditional gift in Ireland, some may want to choose something a little personal, to remind the child of the sacrament and its importance. These days, treasured keepsake gifts can be found to suit all budgets, from picture frames to inscribed jewellery, and from prayer books and rosary beads to a commemorative photoshoot.

Beauty Buzz Travel Guide Top Five Cities To Visit in 2018 Lonely Planet have five cities that are ready for prime time

The 10 Step Guide To The Perfect Red Lipstick 1. Start with a clean lip Gently exfoliate any dry skin by lightly rubbing your lips with a damp waskcloth. 2. Know your formulas Matte can be long lasting, but may dry your lips out. Creamy formulas are hydrating, but may not last as long, and longwearing formulas are more comfortable than they used to be. Experiment! 3. To intensify a colour, wear a lip pencil Lining your lips neutralizes their natural pinkness so the lipstick will be more opaque and closer to the colour in the tube. 4. Use a cross technique to when applying 5. A brush will help lipstick last longer Take the extra time to apply it with a brush in the morning or before a night out. Especially this Valentine’s. 6. Blot the right way Blot in between applications by gently pressing a tissue to your lips. Don’t put the tissue in between lips and press down because that will make your lipstick wear off evenly.

7. Don’t get lipstick on your teeth Put your index finger in your mouth and gently close your lips around it then pull it out. This will take off the lipstick from the inside of your lips so it won’t end up on your teeth. 8. A dab of hightlight will enhance your cupid’s bow The light reflecting particles will help draw attention to the pretty part of your mouth. You could also use a creamy concealer in the same spot to help define your lips. 9. Top with gloss The shine will help make your pout look even plumper. Just use a small drop in the middle of the bottom lip. 10. There is a shade for everyone To find the best hue for you. These are our guidelines: Fair skin looks best with a blue-red hue, olive skin is flattered by an orange-red and dark skin looks best with a burgundy red.

1. Seville, Spain Over the past 10 years, Seville has transformed itself. Once a traffic-congested metropolis resting on its historical laurels, Seville has bloomed into a city of bicycles and trams, keen to reinvigorate its artistic past. The metamorphosis hasn’t gone unnoticed. The capital of Andalucía will host the 31st European Film Awards in 2018, and showcases its good looks in the TV fantasy drama Game of Thrones. Adding colour to an ongoing artistic renaissance, Seville is in the midst of celebrating the 400th anniversary of homegrown Baroque painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, with half a dozen one-of-a-kind expositions continuing into 2018. 2. Detroit, USA After decades of neglect, Detroit is rolling again. It’s like the whole place is caffeine-buzzed, freewheeling in ideas. Young creative types jump-started the scene when they began transforming the crazy-huge slew of abandoned buildings into distilleries, bike shops and galleries. This sparked fresh public works, such as the just-opened hockey and basketball arena downtown, and the QLine streetcar that gives easy access to city hot spots. More are coming: three new parks will extend the riverfront trail (ideal for two-wheeling via the new 43-station bike-share scheme in the greater downtown area), plus groovy hotels will emerge from an old wig shop and a forlorn parking lot. 3. Canberra, Australia Criminally overlooked Canberra packs a big punch for such a small city. National treasures are found round almost every corner and exciting new boutique precincts have emerged, bulging with gastronomic highlights and cultural must-dos. This is the first year that Canberra will host a Test cricket match at the picturesque Manuka Oval, and later in 2018 the Australian War Memorial will take centre stage as it hosts the 100th anniversary of the WWI Armistice. Significantly, Canberra is establishing a permanent Reconciliation Day into the state’s holiday calendar from 2018 onwards, to symbolise commitment to tolerance between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. 4. Hamburg, Germany Its completion seemed to take longer than sitting through the entire cycle of Wagner’s Ring operas, but the stunning new €790 million Elbphilharmonie concert hall was worth every extra year of delay. The glass top shimmers like crystalline sails while the base reflects the brick aesthetic of the surrounding historic and oh-so-walkable HafenCity port area. From here, alluringly accessible Hamburg radiates out along its vast harbour and the Elbe River. Surprises abound: three-season riverfront beach bars, nightlife that’s among Europe’s best, and low-rise charms that reward wanderers who use the city’s dozens of old steeples as compass points. 5. Kaohsiung, Taiwan A massive arts centre and 100,000 sq m cultural and music complex, complete with wave-lapped walkways and and a night market, is emerging on Kaohsiung’s balmy harbourfront – Taiwan’s showcase for experimental architecture from around the world. Adding to this will be a spectacular cruise terminal, for those favouring an Odyssean approach to the port city. A sleek light-rail system links these monuments to the rest of Kaohsiung. Further north, in Xiaogang Shan Recreation Area, hikers can view the Taiwan Strait from the new 88m ‘Eye of the Mountain’ skywalk, a reminder that water is ever-present. Kaohsiung is surging with possibilities: visit before the world gets wind of it.

Recipe of the Week by Head Chef Jamie Cronin of The Heights Hotel

Banana Sticky Toffee Pudding

This is the Sticky Toffee Pudding I have used for years, when writing the Brasserie menu I wanted to use this recipe but change it up a little to stand out from your regular Sticky Toffee, so I decided to add Bananas to it, we tested one batch off in the kitchen and all the staff loved it. So we decided to put it on the menu and it has flown out the door. This recipe makes 7 individual Puddings or 2 loaf tins.

225g whole pitted dates 4 Bananas sliced thinly 175ml boiling water 1 tsp vanilla extract 175g self-raising flour 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

Ingredients

Garden Magic When Is The First Day Of Spring?

2 eggs 85g butter, softened 140g soft brown sugar 2 tbsp black treacle 100ml milk

Method • • • • • • •

Place your dates in a bowl, pour the boiling water over. Leave for about 30 mins until cool and well-soaked, then mash a bit with a fork. Stir in the vanilla extract. Line seven pudding moults or two loaf with melted butter or parchment sheet. Heat oven to 180C. While the dates are soaking, make the puddings. Mix the flour and bicarbonate of soda together and beat the eggs in a separate bowl. Beat the butter and sugar together in a large bowl for a few mins until slightly creamy. Add the eggs a little at a time, beating well between additions. Beat in the black treacle then, using a large metal spoon. Then gently fold in one-third of the flour, then half the milk, being careful not to overbeat as you will knock the air out of it, keep it light and fluffy. Repeat until all the flour and milk is used. Stir the soaked dates into the pudding batter. The mix may look a little curdled at this point and will be like a soft, thick batter. Finally add in your sliced Bananas. Spoon it evenly between the tins and bake for 20-25 mins, until risen and firm.

It seems to be an annual, nationwide time of confusion. Is the first day of Spring February 1 or March 1? I have heard many arguments and debates over the last week on the radio as to what it should be but, for me, whatever the formal date, once nature stirs and plants start growing, winter is over! Which is hard to reconcile with the amount of hailstones that fell this last week! However, there are crocus, daffs and snowdrops flowering, there are catkins on the willows and the chaenomelis is about ready to flower. I have a Prunus cerasifera Hessei by my dining room window. It is a variety of flowering cherry, but grows into a medium sized shrub. Its leaves emerge as a pale green, turning to bronze and later purple, with cream and pink splotches on them. It is a very colourful, and slightly unwieldy shrub (it’s in the wrong place, to be honest) which loses its leaves in the winter. For the last week now, it is the most fragile looking plant in the garden. It is covered in tiny pale pink blossoms. I could be poetical and call them gossamer/ethereal/fairy-like, but in actual fact it is just plain pretty and uplifting. And very, very hardy! A plant I would certainly recommend if you have a bit of space which needs filling. Other plants at this time of year which come into their own are different varieties of Berberis, or the Barberry. There are many, but the following are the hardy evergreen

varieties. The most common one is Berberis darwinii, named after Darwin himself, who ‘discovered’ it in South America during the voyage of the Beagle. It naturalises quite happily here in Ireland and there are many old, tumbledown cottages where you can see its orange flowers peeping through the hedge now. A larger, tougher variety is Berberis lologensis ‘Mystery Fire’, which is second to none when it comes to flowering. It has a much more erect habit than B. darwinii, and is possibly more suitable in a mixed border. Berberis valdiviana is my favourite. It is a large shrub, with leathery spineless leaves. It has tassles of saffron yellow flowers, about 5cm long, followed by tassles of purple berries. Well worth looking out for! For those of you who are itching to go out to do jobs… It’s important to have all the herbaceous plants, especially ornamental grasses, cut back soon. I see new growth on grasses and sedums already. Keep feeding birds. Better yet, plant plants with berries or crab apples. The crab apple trees I have are host to many buffets for finches! Bark mulch which is beginning to break down will become a prime growing medium for weeds, so it might be a good idea to rake it off and replace it with fresh mulch… I would not recommend throwing large amounts on your compost heap, as it will take several years to break down. It can be reused on beds without weed suppressant, where it will break down into the soil.

Top Gear Car Up In Flames

Last week, Top Gear telly was filming for the upcoming season on a closed section of the Monte Carlo Rally’s SS17 stage with four rally cars, and a pre-production Alpine sports car. Chris Harris was driving the €60,000 Renault Alpine A110 when the car’s engine management light came on. Both Chris and co-driver Eddie Jordan were forced to pull over and exit the vehicle having been advised that flames were coming from the bottom of the car. Neither presenter was injured but, unfortunately, fire crews were unable to contain the fire, resulting in the loss of the Alpine. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated. “I first realised I needed to get out when I opened the door and the flames went up my arm,” said Chris. “Sadly the car was lost and it always makes me sad to see a beautiful car destroyed.” “Doing a stage of the Monte Carlo Rally was a dream come true for me,” said Eddie. “The car was stunning – so light on its toes. It was dancing around the mountain and Chris was driving it beautifully. It’s such a shame we didn’t finish the test, but these things happen.”

‘Grid Kids’ To Replace ‘Grid Girls’ Formula 1 is to replace ‘grid girls’ with a new programme called ‘grid kids’ this season. F1 bosses plan to use budding racing drivers “to make the pre-race ceremony more relevant and interesting for fans, especially the younger ones”. The sport said last week it would no longer be using female promotional models on the starting grid. FIA

president Jean Todt said: “Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport and the dream of every young racer competing the junior series that make up the FIA’s single-seater pyramid, from karting all the way to F1.” F1 managing director of commercial operations Sean Bratches said he hoped the opportunity to “stand beside their heroes” would be for the children cho-

sen “an unforgettable experience for them and their families” and “an inspiration to keep driving, training and learning so that they can dream of one day being there themselves”. Bratches said last week that using ‘grid girls’ “does not resonate with our brand values and clearly is at odds with modern day societal norms”.

One year gone since you left us, even though it doesn’t seem a year. Time is a healer. We visit your graveside and pray to you. You had a short lived life while on this earth. We now know your in heaven resting. Your vacant chair at home and in the car too, couldn’t be replaced ever again. Your greatest memories live on. Masses done and candles burning for your soul. The world lost a good husband and father in you. One day we know we will be with you, our family chain will link up again. You may be gone from our sight. You’re on our minds day and night. The decent times are gone now, what we had with you. Our remaining life we still think of you, but as we know, your guiding us day and night. For you meant the world to us. Your hard working hands now at rest. Your legacy and good memory lives on. Twinkle twinkle little star, How I wonder where you are, Up above you are the star, Guiding me all the time. Love from your son Billy Daniel Breen. Sadly missed and always never forgotten, by his heartbroken wife Sheila, his sons Mikey, Denis Jnr, Billy, daughter SheilaMary and daughter-in-law Amy Breen. 5TH ANNIVERSARY BEHAL

In loving memory of a dear Husband Denis Breen, late of Hazelwood Drive, Upper Park Road, Killarney, who died on 10th February 2017. Doesn’t seem a year gone since you left me heartbroken. You had always a smile to share, a laugh, a joke, a time to care for me. Since the day we said our marriage vows, you were my rock in life, now that you are gone, I think of you by lighting a candle & getting mass intentions for your good soul. When God made men, he made a good husband. For me, you were hardworking farmer and a caretaker. You were a good father figure for your family. The memories of you are keepsakes now.

In loving memory of Maureen O’Sullivan, Late of Cullina, Beaufort, Co. Kerry, Who passed away on 8th February 2017. On the first anniversary of our Wonderful Nan. God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be, So he put his arms around you And whispered “Come to Me”. With tearful eyes we watched you, We watched you fade away. Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard-working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. It’s lonesome here without you, We miss you more each day. Life doesn’t seem the same, Since you have gone away. When days are sad and lonely, And everything goes wrong, We seem to hear you whisper, “Cheer up and carry on”. Each time we see your picture, You seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry, I’m in God’s hands, We’ll meet again someday”. Of all the special gifts in life, However great or small, To have you as our Nan Was the greatest gift of all. You’ll never be forgotten Nan, And every year we’ll shed a tear, But it’s only because we love you, And wish you were still here. Love always, Denise, Eimear, Darren & Ciaran xxxx

Sem’s Reign Of Terror Comes To An End Corn Uí Mhuirí Semi-Fin al

St Brendan’s Colle ge 3-8 PS Corcha Dhuibh ne 3-11 (Fitzgerald Stadiu m)

The Sem senior football team’s reign as the undisputed kings of schools football came to an abrupt end last Sunday afternoon as they fell to a disappointing three-point defeat to Pobalscoil Corcha Dhuibhne. Garry McGrath’s men were gunning for a third Munster title, and third All-Ireland, in a row but finally, after two years at the top, they met their match in Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s Dingle. The Sem looked to be in charge early on but faded badly in the second half and, despite a couple of late goals, the result was never really in doubt. Minor goalkeeper Deividas Uosis, who was playing in Dingle’s forward division, netted the game’s first goal in the fourth minute but Paul O’Shea responded quickly for the Sem with a goal of his own. The scores seemed to be coming relatively easily for the Killarney school and they led 1-6 to 1-2 midway through the first, but a couple of quick fire Dingle goals turned the tie on its head. Niall ó Géibheannaigh and Séamus Aghas both found the target to propel the Gaeilgeoirs into a 3-6 to 1-7 lead at the break. The defending champions struggled to get anything going in attack in the second period as

Dingle coasted into a commanding ten-point lead. In fact, the Sem had to wait until the 50th minute to score again. Cian Gammell came forward from centre back to take a penalty and his low effort was saved, but he pounced on the rebound to cut the deficit to seven. Ciarán Flynn then banged in another goal to make it a four-point game with around five minutes to play. Paul O’Shea made it 3-8 to 3-11 as the game went into additional time but the Sem just couldn’t create one final chance to equalise. In the end, Dingle were good value for their win and they’re now just one game away from reclaiming the title they last won in 2015. They’ll face Tralee CBS in the Corn Uí Mhuirí final on Saturday, February 24 (venue TBC). Sem scorers: Ciarán Flynn (1-1, 0-1f), Niall McCarthy (0-5, 0-4f), Paul O’Shea (1-1) and Cian Gammell (1-0). Kerry Have The Golden Touch Kerry unveiled their new away jersey in last weekend’s victory over Mayo and opinion is very much divided on the provocative new colours. The Paul Galvin-designed strip consists of a gold jersey with black trim, black shorts and black socks, a far cry from the predominantly blue change kits of the past.

If Twitter is anything to go by, former Kerry players (or Paul Galvin’s friends, if you want to be cynical about it) were universally in favour of the new jersey but not all of the feedback was positive. Personally I think it’s nice. Not as nice as the new home jersey but that would be very difficult feat. It was definitely strange to see Kerry play in such unconventional colours, although it didn’t seem to bother the players too much. Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s young team put in a fine performance and held on for an impressive 1-15 to 2-9 win, despite finishing the game with just 13 men. Ronan Shanahan and Gavin Crowley both received their marching orders in the second half but Kerry remained dogged in defence and, crucially, composed in possession to see the match out. The one negative was the injury to David Clifford which forced him off midway through the first half. Clifford was subsequently unable to line out for IT Tralee in the Sigerson Cup midweek and is a doubt for Sunday’s game against Monaghan. Gavin Crowley has a hamstring strain and may also be unavailable. Kerry will be looking to make it three out of three in Clones but they certainly won’t have it all their own way. The sides have met five times in the league in the last eight years, with the Kingdom winning three to Monaghan’s two. Monaghan beat the Kingdom in Killarney last year by 2-8 to 1-10.

Knocknagree Claim All-Ireland Junior Crown A dominant first half display was the key as Cork champions Knocknagree overcame Multyfarnham in the All-Ireland JFC final on Saturday. Quick fire goals from Fintan O’Connor and Michael Mahoney in the 13th minute propelled Knocknagree into a commanding lead as the Westmeath side struggled get anything going in attack. The Duhallow club, who defeated Dromid Pearses after extra time in the Munster final, led 2-8 to 0-5 at half time and there was no looking back from there.

They opened up an 11-point lead towards the very end of normal time when goalkeeper Patrick Doyle dropped his 45 short and, incredibly, directly into the top corner of the Multyfarnham net. The Leinster champs rattled two goals in additional time but it was very much a case of ‘too little, too late’. It was a great weekend for Duhallow clubs as nearby Kanturk also claimed All-Ireland glory when they defeated Ballyragget in the Intermediate final on Sunday.

Legendary Gaelic footballer and manager Mick O’Dwyer picked up the biggest gong of the night as he was inducted into the Hall of Fame, while fellow Kerry great Kieran Donaghy collected the award for basketball. Paul Geaney and David Clifford were selected as Player and Juvenile Player of the Year respectively but unfortunately both were unable to attend as they were in Mayo with the Kerry team. Killarney Athletic, who won the Kerry league and cup double in 2017, collected the Soccer Award while near neighbours Celtic were also honoured for their exploits in last year’s FAI Junior Cup. Celtic keeper Robert Osborne was named Juvenile Soccer Player of the Year. All-Ireland winners Dr Crokes and Glenbeigh/ Glencar were named joint Football Teams of the Year, while the St Brendan’s College senior football team, who won the Hogan Cup for the second year in a row, were also honoured.

Around The World

Super Bowl Champs May Shun White House Visit The Philadelphia Eagles may forego the traditional presidential celebration for a major sports champion with three players already confirming that they wouldn’t be willing to meet Donald Trump. The winners of the Super Bowl have visited the White House with the Vince Lombardi trophy for around 40 years but Eagles stars Malcolm Jenkins, Chris Long and Torrey Smith would refuse to visit the president should the trip go ahead. The trio were part of a group that openly supported former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick last season. Kaepernick protested against racial inequality in the US by kneeling during the national anthem and was subsequently released by San Francisco. He is still without a team. Trump reacted angrily to the protests by Kaepernick and others, saying anyone who took such a stand (or a knee) was a “son of a b****”. Long was part of the victorious New England

Patriots team in 2017 and decided to not partake in their presidential celebration, as did current Eagles teammate LaGarrette Blount. When pressed on the matter, Blount said: “I don’t feel welcome in that house.” Last year the Golden State Warriors, who won the NBA Finals, had their invitation to visit the White House rescinded by Trump when it became clear that the players did not want to go. In the NBA, where 85% of the players are black, criticism for Trump has been widespread with a number of stars openly and frequently slating the president. The league’s biggest name, LeBron James, has called Trump a “bum” and also tweeted: “Going to the White House was a great honor until you showed up!” It’s a difficult situation for the Eagles who will be under pressure from certain fans and the league to attend but if more players refuse to turn up, their hand may be forced.

Boxing Rival Tells McGregor to Retire Conor McGregor’s former sparring partner, boxer Paulie Malignaggi, has said that the UFC’s biggest superstar should “fight off the desire to ever fight again”. Speaking to FightHype, the Italian-American claimed that any potential match-up with suitable contenders – be it in the octagon or the boxing ring would result in an “ass whooping”. “Conor wants to fight, he’s an egomaniac. But Conor is still a b**** at heart. When he looks at it, he’s going to see Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson [in the UFC]… Anybody in boxing is an ass whooping. [He’s thinking] ‘Any door I open I’m getting my ass whooped.’” Malignaggi and McGregor have been feuding

since an acrimonious sparring match in the build up to the McGregor v Mayweather fight in 2017. Meanwhile, McGregor’s attempts to trademark his nickname ‘Mystic Mac’ have been put on hold due to an objection from New York company Make Up Cosmetics (MAC). McGregor gave himself the Mystic Mac moniker because of his apparent ability to predict what happens in his fights but MAC say that “there exists a likelihood of confusion on the part of the public” if the brand was applied to toiletries. German business Mac Jeans have also opposed the Irishman’s application on the grounds that similar confusion could arise if the brand was used on clothing.

For now they’ll just be happy to be in this position in the first place. Last weekend’s dramatic victory over the fancied Patriots was their first ever Super Bowl win and their first NFL Championship since 1960. Quarterback Nick Foles, who started the season as a back-up, was named Super Bowl LII MVP as he threw three touchdowns and caught another in an actionpacked 41-33 win. Back in Philadelphia, where sports fans are notoriously rowdy, the celebrations were boisterous to say the least. After the Super Bowl celebrations, the Philadelphia Police Department said: “We have had several acts of vandalism where windows have been smashed, and some injuries have been reported around light poles that have been pulled down. We have one report of looting at a gas station. There have been no fatalities.” When the Phillies won the MLB World Series in 2008, 76 people were arrested for looting and vandalism.

Retro Kerry Jersey Appears In Rap Video

Do you know this man? GAA fans were left perplexed this week when a man wearing a Kerry jersey was spotted in a rap video. Popular rapper French Montana recently shot the video for his song Famous in Chefchaouen, Morocco and the iconic green and gold makes a surprise cameo appearance around three-anda-half minutes in. The jersey in question is the well-liked

Adidas version, which Kerry wore in 1998 when Páidí ó Sé’s team reached the All-Ireland semi-final. The owner of the shirt, who is seen clapping in the background and smoking a hookah pipe, remains a mystery. Is he a Kerryman on holiday in Morocco? Or is he a local who somehow got his hands on a Kerry jersey? If you know his true identity, please let us know.

Sexton’s Monster Kick Breaks French Hearts

Rugby News ...

Words: Liam Murphy

The NatWest 6 Nations kicked off in earnest last weekend with three matches taking place. First up last Saturday Wales hosted Scotland at the Millennium Stadium and Scotland were favourites going into this fixture. Wales were on fire, however, and Warren Gatland’s men simply demolished the visitors running in four tries to win 34–7. Lion Leigh Halfpenny provided a masterclass, scoring a brace of tries. Next up it was the turn of Joe Schmidt’s men as they took on France in Paris. With France not winning a match in their previous seven

games, Ireland were favourites to win. A tough game was on the cards, however, and Jonathan Sexton’s last gasp drop goal from 45 metres out won the match for the visitors. The game ebbed and flowed as Sexton scored four penalties, missing one and France scoring a try to go ahead with a few minutes to go. As the clock went red and Ireland went through 41 phases of pure determination and precision, Sexton’s monster kick echoed Ronan O’Gara’s exploits against Wales some years ago to win the Grand Slam. What a match and what a result. Finally England took on Conor O’Shea’s Italy in

Rome and, as expected, Eddie Jones’ men turned in a masterclass and won 46 points to 15. Owen Farrell was fantastic from the boot and with Ireland, England and Wales winning, the next round will be interesting indeed. Next up Ireland host Italy at the Aviva, England play Wales at Twickenham and Scotland host France at Murrayfield. Three exciting games to be had. Ireland should beat Italy and France will be hurting following the Wales defeat. The pick of the weekend will be the England and Wales match, which after last weekend’s games is a tough one to call.

Clifford Clinches Late Victory For Rugby Club U-16 Munster Cup

Kilfeacle 13-17 Killarney (Tipperary)

The Killarney U-16 team who defeated Kilfeacle in the Munster Cup.

Killarney travelled to Tipperary last Saturday and secured a dramatic win over Kilfeacle in the second game of the U-16 Munster Cup. The home side’s strong pack dominated early proceedings and No. 8 Pádraic Ryan crossed after five minutes for an unconverted try. Gradually Killarney’s excellent defensive work gave them a grip on the game and, taking advantage of a well-worked turnover, Tomás Clifford streaked home to score for the visitors. Donnchadh Grealy nailed a difficult conversion and an entertaining first half finished with Killarney 7-5 ahead. Kil-

feacle started the second half strongly and No. 3 Tiernan Fogarty scored a try after a series of forward phases. A further three points kicked by Kilfeacle outhalf Robbie Byron increased the lead to 13-5. Killarney finished the stronger team, however, and after Dion O’Neill and Adam McSweeney went close, Matt McAuliffe crashed over to leave one point between the sides. Killarney received the re-start with one minute left on the clock. A clever up-field kick was chased down by Sam Casey and Gary Randles and, following a number of skilful recycles, suddenly

Killarney threat Tomás Clifford found a gap and sprinted to touch down in the corner to snatch victory. A feature of the game was the battle of the front rows and debutant Robert Nealon excelled for Killarney. Adam McSweeney, who replaced the injured Brendan O’Donoghue, played superbly and the counter-rucking strength of Denis Kuyon was visible. The rest of the pack defended relentlessly with Sam Casey, Evan Mannix and John McCarthy to the fore. Matt McAuliffe played a captain’s part and was ably assisted by Pádraig Talbot in the back row. Killarney’s skilful and

speedy backs always posed a serious threat with ball in hand. Half-backs Peter Walsh and Donnchadh Grealy controlled and varied the play. Liam Randles, Mark Sheehan and Dion O’Neill all displayed their ball playing talents. The stand out performers who showed a never-say-die attitude were Gary Randles at full back and double try scorer Tomás Clifford. Replacements on the day were Adam Cronin, James Kennelly and Jack O’Connell. Killarney now take on undefeated Cobh Pirates in Aghadoe on Sunday at 12.30pm (subject to confirmation).

U14: Listowel Celtic 2 MEK Utd 0. MEK U14s can be proud of the Bravery, Commitment & Heart shown in Saturdays League Fixture v Listowel Celtic B . Just 11 players took to the pitch in Listowel and we had all the possession but none of the luck. Eddie Moroney and Kevin Harant - our strikers battled hard but their usual magic touches were not with us today in the ice like conditions. Our Midfield quartet of Sam Griffin, Leo Healy, Sam Buckley & Stephen O Brien all covered massive ground and pulled together some incredible passing patterns. Our 4 at the back were all incredibly steadfast, Mason Courtney, Captain Daragh O Brien, and our dual men of the match Conor Crowley and Tadgh O Sullivan leaving everything they had on that pitch. Our Brilliant Goalie Dean Sheehan Made some great stops and decisions that shut down many threats, he is fast becoming one of the best keepers in the county. Each MEK player ran themselves into the ground for each other and some even choose to stayon the pitch despite some knocks and injuries as there was no more than this hardy and loyal 11 available for this match. Get well soon to Conor Harty and Scott Drew who couldn’t play due to illness and were missed by the team & management. Referee Denis O Rourke did a great job with both teams. Finally, a massive thanks to the parents that have continued to attend the games and encourage our players. NEXT WEEK’S FIXTURE: U13- Mastergeeha B V MEK - Sat at 10:30am.

Leane Named Fantasy Manager Of The Month It was a fruitful start to the New Year for Micheál Leane as he topped the Killarney Advertiser fantasy football league in the month of January. Micheál collected an impressive 306 points with a string of consistently high scores, most notable of which was a 103-pointer in Gameweek 24. He triple captained Sergio Agüero for Manchester City’s home game against Newcastle and the Argentinean striker came up trumps, scoring a hat-trick and earning Leane a whopping 51 points. He also used his bench boost chip in Gameweek 25 and substitutes Jordan Ayew and Moritz Bauer chipped in with 8 and 5 points respectively. In the end, he had 22 points to spare over Adrian Jasinski in second place. Denis Kissane, Danny Doona and Brian O’Connor completed the top five. Kevin McCarthy is still tearing away at the top of the overall table with Cormac Foley 44 points behind second. Speaking at the prize-giving, where Micheál picked up a €50 voucher for Brian James, sports columnist Adam Moynihan congratulated the January winner. “Well done to Micheál,” he said. “It goes to show how useful the triple captain and even the bench boost chips can be.” Looking at the wider picture, Adam said it was Kevin McCarthy’s league to lose. “There are 12 weeks to go but Kevin has been relentless so far and he’s showing no signs of slowing down,” said sixth place Adam, who insisted he wasn’t playing mind games. “There’s a lot of pressure on him now, though, so hopefully he doesn’t bottle it. “All of the 385 players still have something to play for. If you get your team right for just a few weeks, you’re in with a great chance of winning one of the remaining Manager of the Month awards.”

Adam Moynihan (Killarney Advertiser), Micheál Leane (Manager of the Month) and Mike O’Leary (Brian James).
