PAGE SIX Roadworks Bring Increased School Traffic Fears Words: Adam Moynihan
There were remarkable scenes in Killarney on Wednesday morning as roadworks caused huge traffic backlogs all over town. The works on the Port Road meant there was a stop/go system in place which caused major delays as students, parents and teachers from the five schools in the immediate vicinity struggled to negotiate the heavy traffic. The New Road, Hans Liebherr Road, Rock Road and even the bypass also all suffered significant tailbacks. With the works scheduled to take 8-10 weeks there were fears of an extended period of chaos but the council acted quickly to put a solution in place. Mayor Niall Kelleher explained that the Ballydowney roundabout was a major source of the congestion so on Friday traffic was allowed to flow at that particular spot, which in turn alleviated the pressure on the Hans Liebherr Road and out towards Fossa. The contrast on Thursday morning couldn’t have been starker. In fact, many observers noted that if anything, traffic in the area seemed to be lighter than a normal school day. Whether or not the solution will continue to work as the works move along the Port Road remains to be seen. There are fears that upcoming weddings and confirmations at the adjoining St Mary’s Cathedral could pose further difficulties. There were also concerns from local school officials about the lack of communication from the council. “We’re aware that the works being carried out are important and really there is no good time for road works in Killarney as it’s busy all year round,” said Colm O’Súilleabháin, Principal of the Presentation Monastery National School. “However, if we had been forewarned about the works we would have been able to notify the parents and the teachers and people would not have gotten such a shock on Wednesday.” Ursula Coffey, Principal of the Holy Cross Mercy School, said it was a pity that a more appropriate time wasn’t chosen. “I appreciate that Killarney, as tourist town, doesn’t allow much scope for the time-
tabling of roadworks,” she added. “Traffic congestion is already an issue in this area of town where there are five large schools and a one-way traffic system in operation morning and evening. The current road works exacerbates an existing traffic problem.” It’s often a case of Catch 22 for the council when attempting to choose the right time to improve local infrastructure. Should they carry out work in the busy summer months and potentially harm the tourist industry, or should they do it in the off-season when the schools are in session, and inconvenience locals in the process? With regards to the ongoing school traffic issue, a
couple of suggestions have been floated. One potential solution is to stagger start times of schools and businesses, which would decrease traffic in and around the 9am mark. Another idea is putting in place a ‘park and ride’ system whereby students would be dropped off at a point further away from the New Road area and brought to school on buses. • What are your thoughts on the issue? Are the council right to do roadworks at this time of year? Is there any way of solving Killarney’s traffic problem? Let us know: newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie 064 66 32215
Special Guests Visit Ian In Hospital Words: Adam Moynihan Brave Killarney youngster Ian O’Connell had a couple of famous visitors this week as Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae and TV personality Lucy Kennedy called to see him at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaoire. The 16-year-old is currently undergoing rehab following a tragic cycling accident last August that damaged his neck and spine. Ian was in good spirits when we spoke on Wednesday and he said the pair, who recently starred together in a memorable episode of Living With Lucy on RTÉ, were “very nice” and stayed chatting with him for an hour and a half.
The Pinewood native also thanked the people of Killarney for their support since the accident. “It has been phenomenal,” he said. “It helps so much.” To date, over €120,000 has been raised in aid of the Ian O’Connell Fund by clubs, schools, businesses and locals. Ian says they’re looking after him up in Dún Laoghaoire and that the rehab is going well. “It’s tiring but it’s good. It has to be done.” “They’re letting me home Paddy’s weekend,” he continued. “I’m looking forward now to going home and meeting everyone. I can’t wait.”

61 New Houses For Killarney “A Step In The Right Direction”
Advertiser ney lar
There was big breaking news in Killarney yesterday evening as it was revealed that a proposal for the provision of 61 units for social housing at Derreen/Ballydribeen has been approved. The Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government confirmed that the units will be provided for
Clúid Housing Association in partnership with and supported by Kerry County Council. Kerry County Council’s Director of Corporate Services and Housing, Martin O’Donoghue, informed councillors that the development has been given the green light and will now proceed to the next stage, i.e. the final stages of the procurement process It’s hoped that the units, which will be allocated to persons on Kerry County Council’s ever-growing housing list,
will be delivered by Quarter 4 2019. Speaking to the Advertiser, Mayor Niall Kelleher said the news was positive. “As Mayor of Killarney, I welcome the announcement of the housing program. There is quite an extensive social housing list in Killarney and this will go part of the way to housing people for a very long time. We have a big housing shortage in Killarney and while this won’t exclusively deal with the problem, it’s a step in the right direction.”
Seán Taaffe To The Rescue For Mayor’s Shindig Seán Taaffe’s have announced that they’ll be opening on Sunday, March 18 so attendees at the Mayor’s Charity Shindig can get their hair and makeup done before the event. There were fears that some guests wouldn’t be able to find a hairdresser on the day of the Shindig but Seán Taaffe and manager Kara McDonagh stepped
in to save the day. Mayor Niall Kelleher has since expressed his gratitude to the pair. The Mayor’s Charity Shindig will benefit some very worthy groups: Kerry Parents & Friends, Buy A Bus Campaign and Social Action Group, Rathmore. • To buy a ticket, ring Niall direct on 087 669 4101.
Snow Shuts Down Killarney… But Not The Advertiser The snow stopped a lot of things last week, but there’s no stopping the Killarney Advertiser. Schools, shops and businesses the length and breadth of the country shut their doors as the Beast from the East and Storm Emma rolled in on Thursday evening. Killarney was no exception with the town coming to a complete standstill. The Advertiser has been delivered on Friday for the last 45 years but, in light of the extreme weather conditions, readers may have feared that last week’s Advertiser may have been in jeopardy but, thanks to an extra spe-
cial effort from staff at both the Park Place office and sister company KC Print in Lissivigeen, Killarney’s oldest and best-loved publication rolled out as per usual on Friday afternoon. Our long-serving delivery driver John Healy did a superb job in getting the job done in spite of the difficult conditions, and our commitment to our readers was epitomised by the boss himself Cormac Casey who took to his four-wheel drive to personally deliver bundles of the Advertiser to some of the least accessible areas of the county. At one drop-off, he was actually greeted with applause from grateful
onlookers. The panic set in countrywide last week and shelves were left bare as people stocked up on bread and milk. With many publications deciding to take the day off, many shops looked almost post-apocalyptic by Friday morning. A number of people commented that the only way of knowing it was a Friday was the fact that the Killarney Advertiser was out. Great credit is due to the council who managed to keep the roads in working order, and to everyone who kept the people of Killarney safe from the potentially dangerous storm.

TOWNTALK The Mountain Festival Is Here
Have couch will travel…Killarney Mountain Festival organisers, Maureen Hegarty, Chairperson, Piaras Kelly, Kerry Climbing, centre, and Kieran Healy, Killarney Advertiser, placing a couch on the foothills of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. Pic:Valerie O’Sullivan
The inaugural Killarney Mountain Festival is taking place this weekend and the town is gearing up for an incredible weekend of action. Speaking to the Advertiser yesterday, organiser Maureen Hegarty said preparations were going well. “It’s all happening now,” she said. “You’d want to be living under a rock to not know the Killarney Mountain Festival was on this weekend. Everybody has been supportive. At the start, people were asking us ‘what is a mountain festival?’ and didn’t realise it’s not just a walking event and it’s not just film festival. There are speaker events – some of these guys are broadcasters and mountaineers who have totalled places like Everest and Kilimanjaro and all kinds of places. What we have is very good quality.” Base camp is a huge circus tent behind the Killarney Plaza and Maureen says there’s plenty to see and do. “That’s the social hub of all the events. We have a
bar and a café in there, there are pop-up film events, we’ve got vendors, exhibitors and people selling gear as well.” She also says the Killarney Advertiser’s special edition of the Chatroom, which saw Kieran Healy take the couch up Carrauntoohil for a chat with Maureen and fellow organiser Piaras Kelly, helped promote the fledgling event. “People were like, ‘what is this?!’ It absolutely did help because it made people curious. It got around!” Although many visitors from further afield are expected to attend, Maureen believes that locals will be crucial to the success of the festival. “A lot of people have been asking what can they do to help. Well, buy a ticket and go to one of the events. That’s the best thing that anyone in Killarney can for us this weekend.” For more information, visit killarneymountainfestival. com.

Killarney Musical Society’s Sweet Charity
Carpool Killarney-oque returns with a bang! Some of the stars of the Killarney Musical Society’s upcoming production Sweet Charity bundled into the car with Kieran to sing some classic show tunes and have the craic! Lily MacMonagle, Rory Ward, Amano Miura and Siobháin Bustin chatted about the new show, how much they are enjoying being involved as well as how many years each of them have been involved in the Killarney Musical Society. Lily, who plays the lead Charity, gave us a glimpse of her New York accent and also
belted out one of the big songs from the show! Rory and Amano gave us a gorgeous rendition of City of Stars from La La Land and what better way to end the drive than all the guys giving an epic rendition of One Day More from the legendary musical Les Miserables. This carpool is certainly one not to be missed. You can watch it on www.killarneyadvertiser.ie and our Facebook page tonight, Friday, March 2 at 9pm! Sweet Charity runs in the INEC March 14, 15 & 16 and if this Carpool is anything to go by, it’s going to be unmissable.

Cathal Drops Colourful ‘All We Need’ Video
Words: Adam Moynihan Talented local musician Cathal Flaherty dropped his latest single to widespread acclaim this past week with the video already racking up tens of thousands of views on Facebook and YouTube. Cathal enlisted the help of Kieran Healy (electric guitar), Patrick O’Connor (drums) and Brendan O’Connor (piano, keyboard, synth, producer) to record All We Need at Little Dylan Studios. The song has been warmly received by fans at home and abroad and, speaking to the Advertiser, Cathal said he was “delighted” with the reaction so far. “I think the video has 35,000 views,” he said, “and the song was sent off to radio on Monday so we’ll see how that goes.” The video, which was recorded and edited by Lucas Machowski, shows Cathal singing and playing guitar while getting doused in colourful paint. “Because this is more of an upbeat song I had the idea of using a lot of paint. I
changed my mind a few times about that to be honest.” While the rest of us were preparing for the Beast from the East, Cathal was already dealing with a different kind of cold. “I didn’t realise how cold the paint was going to be,” he admitted. “I might not look like I was in a lot of pain, but I was. It turned out well in the end.” The single is available to download on iTunes, Apple Music and Spotify. Simply search ‘Cathal Flaherty’. The video can be viewed on YouTube and Facebook. Cathal has also announced two special shows which will take place this summer. First off he’ll take to the INEC Acoustic Club to launch his new EP The Head and Heart on Friday, May 25. Tickets are €12 ex. booking fee and are available at ticketmaster.ie and INEC.ie. He’ll then headline Dublin’s iconic Whelan’s on Sunday, June 3. Tickets available at whelanslive.ie.

The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is celebrating 35 years as Ireland’s largest one-day charity fundraising event. Taking place on Saturday, July 7, registration for the charity cycle will open on March 10 and the event is expected to see 10,000 recreational cyclists take part, with a small number of locals readying their High Nelly vintage bikes for the cycle again this year. Cyclists signing up to complete the scenic 175 km fun cycle will be raising money for 14 carefully selected main beneficiary charities this year and choosing one to fundraise for. 30 additional charities associated with the event are also allocated funds from the registration proceeds. Funds raised to date have contributed towards new hospital extensions, special needs facilities, care for the elderly, suicide prevention, sea and mountain rescue, cancer, kidney, end of life support and more. The main beneficiary charities chosen this year has expanded from 10 to 14 to include national charities such as Pieta House, the Irish Kidney Association and Enable Ireland, all of whom do compelling work for communities across Munster and Ireland. The 2018 Main Beneficiary Charities can be categorised into disability support services, cancer and family support services and community as follows: Disability Support Services • Buy a Bus Campaign - Kerry Parent & Friends Association • Down Syndrome Ireland • Enable Ireland • Irish Kidney Association • St Mary of the Angels (intellectual disability residential care) Cancer & Family Support Services • Breakthrough Cancer Research • Bru Columbanus (family accommodation for seriously ill) • Kerry Hospice Foundation Community Care • Baile Mhuire • Caherciveen Social Services • Irish Community Rapid Response
• KDYS (helping young people reach their potential by equipping them to become stronger and more resilient with skills which last a lifetime) • Pieta House • St Joseph’s Home, Killorglin “With 35 years of experience behind us, our goal for 2018 is to help people make the most of their achievements by creating a fun and inclusive event and giving them more choice in charities to support,” said Tony Daly, Chairman of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. “Our main beneficiary charities have expanded this year from 10 to 14 and include national and local charities who do great work in the communities but need our help to continue. We are looking forward to welcoming all 14 charities, our many cyclists and invaluable volunteers in July to celebrate 35 years of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle.” The registration fee for 2018 is €100 plus a 3.5% service fee. Cyclists can choose to fundraise for their selected charity through an online fundraising page with Everyday Hero or sponsorship cards. Cyclists can pre-order their official Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle jerseys at registration. “There are many great projects and initiatives which will benefit from funds raised and if you choose to fundraise, every euro will go directly to your chosen charity,” added Cathal Walshe, PRO of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. “Registrations will take place on a first come, first served basis and we are encouraging all participants to keep an eye on our social channels for regular updates including preparation tips and how your fundraising efforts are positively affecting the charities involved.” Registration for this years event on the opens at 8am tomorrow (Saturday) on the cycle website. When registering, cyclists will have a opportunity to select a charity to cycle for by clicking the appropriate button. Having done so one can then opt to request a sponsorship card or alternatively make online donation through EveryDayHero. The process is straightforward, much like booking a concert/airline ticket. Finishing touches are currently being put to scenes and dance numbers. As the sets are erected and costumes finalised, everything points to another fantastic production. Tickets can be purchased by calling to our pop-up stand this Saturday and Sunday at the Killarney Outlet Centre or by calling 087 1342314 or the INEC Box Office on 064 66 71555. Sweet Charity follows the romantic trials and tribulations of Charity Hope Valentine - “a girl who wanted to be loved” - played by Killarney local Lily MacMonagle. Charity is a taxi dancer, a dance partner-for-hire at a dance hall in New York City. Though the job may be decidedly undesirable, Charity’s hopeful romanticism and unfailing optimism lift her out of her circumstances and help her reach for a life beyond.
Artist
In the past, she’s been strung along and hung out to dry by a series of bad relationships and lousier men. When she meets Oscar, played by Rory Ward, a neurotic, shy actuary seemingly from another world, will she finally find true love at last? One of the most famous shows by legendary director/choreographer Bob Fosse and with a laugh-a-minute script by the incomparable Neil Simon, every audience is destined to fall in love with Charity’s limitless spirit, as she lives life “hopefully ever after.” The Killarney Musical Society would like to take this opportunity to thank all patrons and sponsors for their continued financial support, support which is vital to the success of the society. The main sponsor again this year is Independent Irish Health Foods Ltd, whose support is greatly appreciated. The countdown is well and truly on and we guarantee you will be singing and dancing along to all the big numbers, including Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This, I’m a Brass Band and Baby, Dream Your Dream.
Spring Exhibition For Carmel T. Madigan Artist Carmel T. Madigan will host an art exhibition at the Brehon Hotel, Killarney over the St Patrick’s bank holiday weekend. This spring exhibition will show her new work for the first time and will consist of over 40 of her distinctive artworks, both new and recent. Carmel portrays her thoughts on nature through vibrant colour, lively movement, and a tapestry of rich and deep textures. The works are playful and upbeat but pay homage to radical events like Hurricane Ophelia, and the winter storms that batter our coastline. Carmel grew up on the Loophead Peninsula in County Clare, a wind and ocean-exposed headland. She has been a professional artist for 25 years and her works are held in many public and private collections at home and abroad, including the OPW, Bank of Ireland, and the Department of Education. The exhibition at the Brehon Hotel is open to all on Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18 from 11am to 7pm.

The Shape Of Water was by far the big winner during 2018 Oscars, picking up a total of 4 wins out of 13 nominations with Guillermo del Toro winning Best Director and the film clinching Best Picture. It was a night of firsts for many, as Gary Oldman, Allison Janney and Sam Rockwell all went home with their first Oscars in their respective categories, Oldman in particular, who many felt was long overdue. ‘Meryl, if you do it everyone else will’: Best Actress winner Frances McDormand has all female nominees stand in solidarity as she delivers powerful speech about diversity.

Not All Plastics Are Recyclable, Experts Warn Although many people believe that all plastic is recyclable, the reality is that only certain types are. According to recycling experts KWD, if you have sweet papers, wet paper or plastic bags in your recycling bin then you are contributing to the growing amount of recycling rejected due to contamination. So why is this happening? Well, if you look at the food items you buy every week during your shopping trip and look at the packaging around these items, you will find that only a fraction of the packaging can go into the recycling bin. Here’s a quick quiz to help you remember. To make a chicken curry, you need to buy the ingredients but what do you do with the packaging? Is it all recyclable? • Plastic container from the chicken • Plastic wrap/bag from peppers, onions and mushrooms • Tin from coconut milk • Plastic container from fresh coriander leaves • Milk carton • Plastic wrap/bag from rice • Plastic wrap/bag from naan bread
Four items from the list can be recycled (once they are clean and dry): the two plastic rigid containers, the milk carton and the tin. Everything else must go in the general waste bin. If an item is put into the recycling bin that shouldn’t be, e.g. plastic bag, wet paper, sweet wrappers, dirty containers, then this will end up contaminating the load and will end up as landfill waste. To increase awareness and improve on recycling, people are being urged to let your friends and neighbours know. Think about it this way: if your neighbour puts incorrect material into their recycling bin, this will impact the overall load... After all your efforts to recycle better! KWD Recycling is one of the largest waste collection companies in Kerry servicing both domestic and commercial customers. Bins are provided for recycling, general waste and food. They operate a ‘pay by weight’ charging system so the less you weigh, the less you pay. KWD Recycling is serious about recycling and want to encourage communities to get involved and recycle better. For more information on recycling, visit recyclinglistireland.ie and kwd. com.
Recycle right initiative finished KWD representatives have visited 91 primary schools throughout Kerry over the last number of months completing workshops with over 3600 pupils. We explained what happens to waste and how to manage it in a sustainable and correct manner. We would like to thank everyone who participated in the workshops and contributed to its success. All schools we visited had the opportunity to enter our competition to build “Kenny the KWD Truck” to win some amazing prizes. The competition is now closed and we will be announcing the winners in the coming weeks. Best of luck to all entrants!

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
McAleese Calls Church An “Empire Of Misogyny” Speaking at a conference in Rome about women’s roles in the Church, Mary McAleese has challenged Pope Francis to “develop a credible strategy for the inclusion of women as equals.” The former Irish President made her comments in a speech at a conference in Rome about women’s roles in the Church. Speaking to reporters ahead of the conference, Dr McAleese called the Church an “empire of misogyny”. In her keynote speech, McAleese said Pope Francis needs to develop a strategy “with targets, pathways and outcomes regularly and independently audited”. “Failure to include women as equals has deprived the Church of fresh and innovative discernment; it has consigned it to recycled thinking among a hermetically sealed cosy male clerical elite flattered and rarely challenged by those tapped for jobs in secret and closed processes. It has kept Christ out and bigotry in. “It has left the Church flapping about awkwardly on one wing when God gave it two.
We are entitled to hold our Church leaders to account for this and other egregious abuses of institutional power and we will insist on our right to do so no matter how many official doors are closed to us.” McAleese was speaking at the Why Women Matter conference, which was organised by Voices of Faith to mark International Women’s Day. The event made headlines last month after it emerged that the Vatican barred McAleese and another speaker from taking part in the event, a move put down to their stance on LGBT+ issues. The conference was due to take place in the Holy See, but organisers moved the location so the barred speakers could take part. Noting how Pope Francis previously described female theologians as the “strawberries on the cake”, McAleese said in her speech: “He was wrong. Women are the leaven in the cake. They are the primary handers on of the faith to their children. In the western world the Church’s cake is not rising, the baton of faith is dropping.”
Spanish Women Trump Corner Strike For Equality Fears For Trade As Trump Pushes Metal Tariff There were fears that decades of cooperation in international trade could collapse on Thursday as Donald Trump looked set to push forward with plans to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports. The president will meet metal industry executives and workers at the White House on Thursday afternoon to discuss the controversial levies. Officials from China and Europe have threatened retaliation if Trump goes ahead with his plan. “Looking forward to 3.30pm meeting today at the White House,” the president tweeted before the meeting. “We have to protect & build our Steel and Aluminum Industries while at the same time showing great flexibility and cooperation toward those that are real friends and treat us fairly on both trade and the military.” Trump’s plan is to impose a 25% tariff on imports of steel, and a 10% tariff on aluminium. The initial plan was for a global levy, although it now appears that Australia, Canada
Never fails to entertain
and Mexico and other countries will be exempted. Other exceptions for some US companies may also be allowed. The Trump administration has framed the tariffs as an issue of national security designed to protect US metal interests. The White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, speaking on the Fox Business Network, said: “Look, this is pretty simple in this case. We’ve got an aluminum and steel industry. The president, quite clearly and correctly, [believes] we can’t have a country without those two industries. Fact of the matter of it, both of them are on life support – the aluminum industry in particular.” Navarro went on: “In another year or two or three, if we don’t do anything, that’s going to be gone, and we’re not going to be gone, and we’re not going have a country.” Trump promised on the campaign trail to protect US steelworkers’ jobs, but his plan was opposed by top economic adviser Gary Cohn, who – with the backing of many executives in other industries – argued that the impact on trade and on companies using cheap steel imports would outweigh any benefits of the tariffs.
Women workers in Spain marked International Women’s Day yesterday with an unprecedented strike targeting gender inequality and sexual discrimination. Work was halted as part of a 24hour strike organised by the 8 March Commission and backed by 10 unions and some of Spain’s top female politicians. Scores of marches under the slogan “if we stop, the world stops” are taking place across Spain. Events marking the day are being held in dozens of other nations. Women taking part have stopped working and have been urged by organisers to spend no money and ditch any domestic chores for the day. Police were called to stop protesters blocking main roads in Barcelona but some women pickets still brought areas to a standstill.Public transport nationwide is available but at reduced services and flights have also been affected. Evening marches in Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia
and a number of other cities are leading events in 200 Spanish locations. The Spanish event began with the banging of pots in the early hours. Many prominent women in the media were absent from their programmes. The 8 March Commission is behind the strike. Its manifesto calls for “a society free of sexist oppression, exploitation and violence” and says: “We do not accept worse working conditions, nor being paid less than men for the same work.” A poll of 1,500 people for the El Pais daily suggested 82% supported the strike, while 76% thought women in Spain had harder lives than men.

Tusk Says Ireland Wording Of Abortion Must Come First Referendum Agreed
Issues relating to Ireland must be dealt with first in Brexit negotiations in advance of all other matters, European Council president Donald Tusk has said. Mr Tusk was speaking at a press conference in Government Buildings following a meeting with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar. The meeting came after the European Council published draft negotiating guidelines for Brexit earlier this week. Mr Tusk’s blunt message reflected the EU’s rejection of British prime minister Theresa May’s plan for a post Brexit relationship between the UK and EU.
He said there is an impression among some on the UK side that other issues on the future relationship between Britain and the EU could be dealt with in advance of talks on Irish issues, such as avoiding a hard border. “My response would be Ireland first,” Mr Tusk said. He also said if the UK wants to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic, it must come up with firm proposals on how to do so. Tusk opened his speech by referencing the recent bad weather, saying: “Let me assure you that I haven’t come to chill the air but rather to warm it up. I may be from the east but I am not a beast.”
The Irish government has agreed the wording of a national referendum on abortion to be held by the end of May. The cabinet, meeting yesterday on International Women’s Day, approved a bill allowing the long-anticipated referendum to go ahead. Voters will be asked if they want to repeal article 40.3.3 – known as the eighth amendment – which since 1983 has given unborn foetuses and pregnant women an equal right to life, effectively enshrining a ban on abortion in the country’s constitution. If Ireland votes in favour of repeal, the government has said it will introduce legislation permitting unrestricted abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Currently, terminations are only allowed when the life of the mother is at risk, and
the maximum penalty for accessing an illegal abortion is 14 years in prison. Since 1983, an estimated 170,000 women have left Ireland to have terminations, and up to 2,000 women each year illegally take the abortion pill, accessed online. The taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, said: “This referendum is about asking our citizens to allow women to make major decisions for themselves. It’s about trusting women to decide, in the early weeks of their pregnancy, what’s right for them and their families. “And it’s about trusting our doctors to decide when continuing with a pregnancy is a risk to the life or health of a woman. “Above all it’s about trusting Irish people to consider this matter in depth, with compassion and empathy, as I know they will.”
Killer Whales Spotted Alexa, Please Stop Laughing Off Kerry Coast Amazon has been forced to take measures to prevent virtual assistant Alexa from spontaneously laughing. Users of devices that have the Alexa assistant software have posted unsettling videos in the past couple of weeks of speakers laughing menacingly for no apparent reason. Amazon told AFP it looked into
what was going on and found that sometimes Alexa mistakenly registers the phrase “Alexa laugh” and obeys. “We are changing that phrase to be ‘Alexa, can you laugh?’ which is less likely to have false positives,” an Amazon spokesperson told AFP. Alexa will now also say “Sure, I can laugh,” before cackling.
Woman Jailed For Removing Hijab Two large killer whales have been spotted off the Blasket Islands in Co. Kerry. Rarely seen in Irish waters, it is believed the orcas may be hunting seals in the area. The killer whales have been identified and belong to a pod of well-known orcas normally seen off the Scottish Hebrides. The two males were spotted by a group of whale watchers around 3km south of Great Blasket Island. Nick Massett, of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, said the killer whales came within 60m of their boat and the close encounter took his breath away.
“This was the first time I’ve seen a killer whale here and there’s just something about them. They’re awesome. They are an apex predator and you just know that. You can sense that. They have a presence about them.” The notchings on one of the dorsal fins was quickly identified as those belonging to ‘John Coe’, a well-known killer whale. The large male was first photographed off the Scottish Hebrides over 35 years ago. The second orca has been identified as ‘Aquarius’. They are members of a small pod of eight animals called the Scottish West Coast Community.
An Iranian woman who publicly removed her veil to protest against a mandatory hijab law has been sentenced to two years in prison, prosecutors say. The woman, who has not been officially named, was found guilty of “encouraging moral corruption”, Tehran prosecutor Abbas Jafari-Dolatabadi said. He added that 21 months of the woman’s sentence had been suspended and that she was in need of medical treatment. It follows dozens of similar arrests of Iranian women in recent weeks. Most of those detained for defying the country’s strict law on appearing in public in a headscarf have been released without charge. The woman sentenced in the capital, Tehran, on Wednesday was jailed for three months without parole. She is “in need of long-term medical treatment and has to be seen by a
psychiatrist”, Mr Jafari-Dolatabadi said. He criticised the suspension of the majority of her sentence and argued that she should serve the full term of her penalty. In December, an Iranian woman who was detained after defiantly taking off her headscarf and holding it on a stick in Tehran became the face of protests in the country. Images of her standing on a telecoms box in a busy street in the city were widely shared on social media. The woman was later freed. The photograph of the woman was first widely used in connection to the White Wednesday campaign in which women in Iran wear white to protest against the country’s strict dress code. Since the Iranian revolution in 1979, women have been forced to cover their hair according to Islamic law on modesty.

Netflix - Seven Seconds
Review: Niall Horan - Flicker Niall Horan’s album Flicker has topped the charts in the US just ten days after its release and it has also topped the iTunes chart in at least 61 other countries. Ahead of his gig this weekend in the INEC, Flicker is a most listen! When he launched his album he said: “I’ve spent the last year and a half writing and recording this
album. It’s something that I’ve worked really hard on and I’m incredibly proud of it,” he continued. “This is the first time I’ve put my thoughts and emotions on paper and then onto record and it feels really good.” “I hope you enjoy it. Thank you for everything so far,” he added.
On The Box
Seven seconds is how long it takes for Pete Jablonski (Beau Knapp), a young white police officer, to run over Brenton Butler, a black teenager on a bicycle, in a New Jersey park. And it’s also the name of the new Netflix series from Veena Sud, the showrunner best known for adapting The Killing from the original Danish series for the American market. Seven seconds is full of good performances and interesting, rarely fully developed, ideas, and it changes forms so frequently that I maintained curiosity through the frequent spaces that dragged. It’s a grind, but it’s the same kind of grind as The Killing, a show with many fans so if you are one of those fans you’ll probably love this.

Home Renovation Killarney Credit Union Has You Covered For Your Spring Home Improvement Plans Spring is in the air, and that means that home improvements are on the minds of many. DIY and renovations have always been popular in Ireland. In fact a recent survey by the Irish League of Credit Unions found that a significant two thirds of adults had carried out home improvements in the three years previous to the study. One quarter estimated that they spend between €1,000 and €3,000 when upgrading their home. 42% said they would choose to transform their home with new carpets and flooring. 38% said they would opt for new heating or insulation and 23% said they would fit new windows or doors. While these upgrades work wonders for your home, they can be costly endeavours. The good news is that those surveyed had the right idea when it came to funding their home improvements. Of those who said they would need to borrow, six in ten said they would use their local credit union.
Commenting on this, Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer, Killarney Credit Union said; “This is no surprise to us as we are seeing a large number of queries from people in the South Kerry area asking about our home improvement loan. It’s easy to see why there is such interest in the product. We offer the loan at a great value APR rate of 8.3%. Not only that, but our loans are typically approved in 2-3 days. We are also happy to offer our loans to brand new members, those members we see every days and of course those members who may have inactive accounts or whom we haven’t seen in a while.” Helen continued “There are a lot of other benefits with our home improvement loan. There are no administration fees or hidden charges and we can structure

Whiteboard Paint - How It Works Top Team Painters Ltd are delighted to welcome Whiteboard Paint, the first whiteboard paint ever invented. It became the first high-performance whiteboard formula on the market and is still the most durable whiteboard coating available. It has been hailed as “the latest in communication technology”. Benefits And High Performance It is available in white. It also comes in clear, which can be applied over a pre painted coloured wall. It can be applied to virtually any smooth surface, plasterboard, tables, pillars, doors to name but a few. It outperforms and outlasts the leading dry-erase option. We just prep and prime the surface before we start. It will be as smooth as the surface we paint. Erases clean every time and is odourless. Can also be used as a projection screen: Despite its high gloss nature, many customers use Whiteboard paint as a projection surface. Short throw and table top projectors are recommended for best results. Boarders can be created around the surfaces to promote interest, to brand with company logos or simply to make their whiteboard paint space stand out. The possibilities are endless. Whiteboard paint is ready to initially write on after 5 days. It is the only patented whiteboard product on the market. Green Gard Gold Certified (Low VOC emissions, and is acceptable for use in schools and healthcare facilities).

UPCOMING CHANGES TO DATA PROTECTION The General Data Protection Regulations will come into force on the 25th of May 2018. This replaces the existing Data Protection regime. This will have an effect and place obligations on all Organisations involved in any processing of Data of any nature. This will place obligations and requirements on Employers and Employees and all Organisations, Offices or entities who hold or process or deal in any manner with information of a personal nature of third parties including Clients, Employees, Sub-Contractors etc. It is important that Organisations are aware of the upcoming changes and review and enhance an organisation, risk management processes. Organisations should highlight areas of concern which may give rise to compliance issues under the new regime. An Organisation should make an inventory of any and all personal data which is held by that Organisation. The Organisation should outline why they hold such information, how they have
obtained it and if there is still a requirement to retain same. The security of the retention of the information must also be examined. This is particularly of relevance in respect of potential cyber-attack. In further issues we will deal with this key issue in greater detail but it is important that Organisations begin to plan now to ensure compliance with the new regime and to put relevant policies and procedures which require to be in writing in place prior to the 25th of May 2018. Advice should be taken to draft said policies as soon as possible to ensure compliance and to prevent prosecutions for breach of which carry significant consequences and penalty. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Grace Notes Words: Grace Foley
The Great Teacher Inspires For years, a music student listens to every single thing their teacher tells them. We so desperately want to soak up all their knowledge and learn from their experiences. One of the biggest things I’ve learned in my singing life is that the relationship between music student and teacher is a very important one. This teacher needs to see not only the talent of the person standing before them but they also need to see the person. I experienced a time in my life where I felt I had been forgotten and my voice took centre stage. I tried to change and become more of what others expected of me. I became ashamed of the person I really am. I felt as though I needed to change personality and forget who I am and where I come from. I lost myself and I lost my voice. During this very dark time in my life, I was so lucky to start working with

What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injectables? Anti-wrinkle injectables are an effective way of softening fine lines and wrinkles. They are injected directly into the muscle that causes facial contractions, for example the frown lines between the brows, and work by stopping facial nerves from sending the message to the muscle to contract each time you make a facial expression. This allows the muscle to relax and as a result, the overlying skin releases its wrinkle. Anti-wrinkle injectables and fillers can be used in a variety of treatable areas of the face, depending on where your wrinkles are. Skilled administration of injections means natural looking results, and our highly qualified medical

Geneva Motor Show With A Twist
s13,950
142 VW Golf 2.0 TDI Match
Words: Cormac Casey Geneva Motor Show captures headlines for showcasing manufacturers latest creations and concepts but Jaguar Land Rover devoted part of their stand to a 1984 Jaguar XJ6 ‘restomod’ (restoring an old car with modern modifications). In recent years Jaguar Land Rover along with other manufacturers such as Porsche, Mercedes, Ferrari and even Alfa Romeo joined that growing list last week, have introduced recreations of past models. Enzo Ferrari when once asked, “what is your favourite Ferrari?” replied “The one that has not been built yet.” That is true for all manufacturers; the next generation will be better. You only need to look at the standard of the car today against ten years ago. The standard today is exceptional from all the creature comforts and driver aids making the most mundane journey a pleasure. However, ‘Dieselgate’ put the car industry and our legislators into a tailspin with manufactures announcing that they are dropping diesel models from their line-up. Porsche last week announced no further new diesel models and this week Toyota
Finance this from s49p/wk
announced that they are to drop diesel cars by the end of the year. These are two manufactures on both ends of the scale. Jaguar Land Rover’s XJ6 recreation doesn’t mean that we are all going to be driving ‘restmods’ in the future, which would be cool. What is does mean is that manufactures are getting back to basics and exploring every market sector. The current diesel car is better than the last but has a credibility issue today; electrification is still in its infancy. The one constant fuel source is the one we have been trying to get away from for the past twenty years: petrol. That is going to be the fuel of choice while we wait for an alternative cost-effective option, if there is one. In the meantime, old petrol cars are given a new lease of life under this new automotive trend ‘restomod’, so much so that manufacturers are investing millions in facilities to recreate these past glories. For any car enthusiast – long may it continue. That is not a solution but a very warm PR exercise while the car industry and legislators scramble to find an alternative solution. Who knows, maybe the new green car of tomorrow will be a ‘restomod’.

The Breath-Taking Mexico WRC This weekend sees the World Rally Championship head to Mexico for round three. After the winter weather in Monte Carlo and Sweden, the WRC contingent is more than happy to take in a few rays. It will be breath-taking in both senses of the word as the WRC climbs to the thin air and stunning scenery of the Sierra de Lobos and Sierra de Guanajuato mountains,
based in the country’s fifth largest city of León, northwest of Mexico City. This event is particularly special for Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle after their epic win there last year with probably the most exciting and nail-biting end to a WRC event in recent history. The pair slid off the road kilometres from the end of the event but had enough time in the bag to recover to take the win. The Citroen crew are joined this weekend by nine-time WRC champion Sébastien Loeb, who is taking Craig Breen’s seat for this and two other events this season.
This is unfortunate for the Waterford man who was coming off the back of an incredible career-best second place last time out. Loeb has scored six consecutive wins on this event between 2006 and 2012 so Meeke and Nagle will be keen to see how they measure up against the former champion. Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville leads the championship on 41 points with Sebastian Ogier in second on 31 points. Meeke and Nagle are 24 points a drift and a win here this weekend would put them back in the hunt. An exciting weekend of rallying ahead.

Given the bad weather we’ve just had, the garden might be the last place you want to be…. However, there is plenty to be done, especially after the snow. Many lawns might be damaged so it is a good time to take the opportunity to rake out thatch, apply mosskiller or lime and tidy up the edges. Other problems also come to light after this weather, for example rotten or damaged fence panels are apparent, as is damage to walls, glasshouses and sheds. Glasshouses and polytunnels should be disinfected, and any pots and seedtrays cleaned and disinfected also, if not done yet! If you are wondering what to do on a wet afternoon with the kids, you could make a stack of newspaper pots. These are simple to make. Just cut the top off a 500ml plastic bottle. Take a sheet of newspaper, fold it in half, wrap it around the bottle and tuck the ends into the open end. Then you can slip it off the bottle and hey presto, a pot! Free and very handy! Ideal for sowing peas, sweet peas, beans, lupins and a host of other large seeds. The pots decompose so there is no transplanting involved, keeping the roots undisturbed. If there are any water features in your garden, it’s an ideal time to drain them and clean them. Ponds can also be cleaned out. I notice that a lot of my water plants and aerators died during the cold spell so they do need to be taken out of the pond to avoid problems later on. When you remove them, just leave them at the side of the pond for a few hours, so any water creatures can crawl out and return to the water! You can use it directly as a mulch then as it will be fairly rotten anyway. All pond plants can be cut back and tidied up, and water lillies can be repotted if necessary. Always use special pond baskets for pond plants, and aquatic soil. Cover the top of the pot with gravel and lower gradually into the water to avoid everything drifting up and out.

Top Tips For Buying A New Home BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO BUY Find out what you can afford. It is important to evaluate all costs involved in buying a home, for example, mortgage costs, legal fees, registration of deeds and stamp duty. The amount of money that you can get as a mortgage loan is governed by Central Bank lending limits. If you have calculated that you can afford to buy a property, taking all of these factors into account, then you are ready to buy. GET A SOLICITOR Conveyancing is the legal work involved in buying or selling property. Conveyancing charges can vary between solicitors, so it is worth contacting several solicitors to compare prices. FIND A PROPERTY YOU LIKE AND CAN AFFORD Property websites, auctioneers and estate agents are the main ways of finding property for sale. There is a public register of auctioneers and estate agents on the website of the Property Services Regulatory Authority. Sometimes individual sellers advertise their property themselves. Newspapers may also have property supplements or publish advertisements for properties for sale. GET A SURVEY A seller is under no obligation to disclose defects in a property. You should get a survey of the property to find out if there are any defects before finalising the purchase. The Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) is the professional body for chartered surveyors.
GET MORTGAGE APPROVAL Very few people can buy a home without getting a mortgage. A mortgage is a long-term loan secured against the property you buy. This means if you don’t repay your mortgage you may lose your home. There are different types of mortgages and different mortgage providers. Contact a number of different mortgage providers to find out who can offer you the best deal. More information on mortgages and choosing the best one for you is available from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission. You can get mortgage approval in principle before you start to look for a property; this will let you know how much you have to spend. However, when you find a property you like, you must get formal mortgage approval before you sign the contract for sale. If you sign a contract for sale and subsequently don’t get mortgage approval, you will lose your deposit and there may be other penalties. HOW TO BUY THE PROPERTY YOU WANT Private treaty sale A private treaty sale is where the property is not put into an auction. You can contact the seller or the seller’s agent, usually an estate agent, to agree a purchase price. If there is an estate agent involved, once you have agreed to buy the property you may be required to pay a booking deposit to the estate agent. The legal
process to buy the property may only start when the estate agent receives your booking deposit. This deposit is refundable up to the signing of the contract for sale. Your mortgage provider will give you formal mortgage approval and issue you with a loan pack. You will need to think about mortgage protection insurance and home insurance. You can organise these with your mortgage provider but it is advisable to shop around. When your solicitor has checked the contract for sale, you will sign it and pay a deposit (less any booking fee). SIGN THE CONTRACT FOR SALE The contract for sale binds the parties to the completion of the sale. If you withdraw from the sale after this contract has been signed, you may lose your deposit. If you buy at auction you must immediately sign the contract for sale. If you buy through private treaty your solicitor will check that the contract is in order before you sign it. CLOSING THE SALE Requisitions on Title and Deed of Conveyance After signing the contract and before the completion date of the sale, your solicitor raises some general queries about the property with the seller’s solicitor. Requisitions on Title are a standard set of questions relating to the sale of a property that deal with such things as whether fixtures and fittings are included in the sale. When your solicitor gets a satisfactory reply to Requisitions on Title, a Deed
of Conveyance is drafted by him or her and approved by the seller’s solicitor. Once the Deed of Conveyance is approved by the seller’s solicitor, your solicitor will contact your mortgage provider to request the issue of the approved loan cheque. This is the remaining balance of the purchase price. It is paid to the seller’s solicitor and all documentation, and keys to the premises are handed over to your solicitor. STAMP DUTY Your solicitor will calculate how much stamp duty is due and request this from you before the closing of the sale. The stamp duty is paid to the Revenue Commissioners, who place a stamp on the deeds. Without this stamp, the deeds cannot be registered. The deeds name the owner of the property. AFTER THE SALE IS COMPLETED Deeds Once a sale is completed, your deeds, showing the new ownership details and mortgage details, if relevant, must be registered with either the Registry of Deeds or the Land Registry. The Property Registration Authority (PRA) is responsible for both systems of registration. Your solicitor will continue to assist you with finalising the deeds to your house with the PRA. This can take from months to years to complete. Moving house There are many things to do when moving house, for example, redirecting your post and changing your details on the electoral register.

Snow Time In Killarney Words: Nicky Barry
You’d wonder where it came from, and why the heavens don’t fall down, With all the snow that’s up there, before falling to the ground. Flakes are quite ethereal, as they drift down by street lights, And none can deny that falling snow, is a delight by night. But then again, on the other hand, it can be a damn nuisance, As it clogs up country roads, and snow-drifts cover fences. Cattle and sheep are mystified, by all this powdery
stuff, While children all make snowmen, and cannot get enough, Especially if they live near a hill, and have a wooden sledge, To spend all day going up and down, until it’s time for bed. Lovers walk out in the park, and kiss, and throw snowballs, While cats and dogs shiver with cold, right down to their paws. Teachers enjoy the day off school, and lie on in bed, While farmers ferry fodder, for
livestock must be fed. The mountains look like Alpine slopes, and deer forage for grass, Little birds are really famished, and hope it all will pass. Bakers are working overtime, to get bread on the shelves, While blokes stock up with cans, like the world was going to end. If it only came on Christmas Day, there would be jubilation, But it happened on the first of March, and caused exasperation!

See Our Columnists’ Coverage Of The Week In Sport And Catch Up On Killarney Notes And On The Ball
Snowed Off Decider Refixed For Saturday Words: Adam Moynihan The snow wreaked havoc with last weekend’s sport and the basketball was no exception. It was deemed too dangerous for Kilkenny to travel to Killarney for their Division 1B decider with the Scotts Lakers so the game has been rescheduled for tomorrow night. Once again a full house is expected at the Auracle as the top two meet with a decent piece of silverware on the line. With the teams neck and neck at the summit, it promises to be a fiercely competitive encounter. The Lakers remain three points clear in first but Kilkenny have a game in hand. Kilkenny are very firm favourites to overcome bottom-of-the-table
Words & Pics: Eamonn Keogh After a five-year absence St Paul’s Basketball Club will host an Easter Basketball Camp at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre from Tuesday, March 27 to Thursday, March 29 inclusive. Scotts Lakers National League superstars Antuan Bootle and Dailian Mason and St Paul’s Director of Basketball/former EuroLeague player Vojkan Bencic will be joined by a number of well-established Irish
Titans in their other game, however, so tomorrow evening’s clash looks like being a straight shoot-out for the title. Division 1B isn’t necessarily where the Lakers want to be operating but victory in the Shield would do no harm whatsoever. They gave a good account of themselves against some of the teams challenging for the 1A crown earlier on in the campaign so they’re certainly not a million miles away. It’s the club’s first time back in the National League in almost a decade so if you offered them a piece of silverware back in September, I’m sure they would have taken it. Cormac O’Donoghue’s team will be going all out to make sure they sign off on a winning note.

coaches and local club coaches. Club officials are still finalising the full list but those expected to be involved will be announced soon. The camp, which is open to boys and girls from 7-17 years of age, will involve intensive and interesting sessions on skill development in offence and defence, as well as teaching the participants the mental side of basketball. There will also be informative tips on nutrition and
much more, giving all participants a huge insight into basketball and helping them to improve their overall game. Everybody taking part in the camp will benefit from a total of nine hours basketball coaching over the three days. The cost for each participant is €40 each and for the second and third child in the same family, the cost is €20 euro. The camp is not confined to members of the St. Paul’s club
and there is an open invitation to all basketball enthusiasts in Killarney and to members of any basketball club in Kerry and beyond. Celts Set For Tough Munster Junior Clash Munster Junio r (Quarter Fina Cup l) S
outhend U nited v Kil larney Celt Sunday at ic 2pm (Wate rford) Words: Adam Moynihan Killarney Celtic are back in provincial action on Sunday as they make the long trip up to Waterford to face Southend United. Eoghan Donnellan’s men have their sights set on yet another momentous away win but the Celtic boss knows that it won’t be an easy feat. “They beat Cahir (Tipperary) 4-1 away from home in the last round,” he said. “Any time you go away from home and win 4-1 you’re obviously a decent side. They play in the Waterford Premier League so they’re in or around the same level as Waterford Crystal, and we had our work cut out to beat them in the last round. “As I always say, in big competitions the home draw is worth a huge amount to any team. Look, we’ll be up against it but if we get a similar result to what we got against Waterford Crystal, I’d gladly take it.” Getting a home draw is often crucial in games like this but Celtic have picked up some impressive away wins in the past. Does being away from home affect the team’s approach at all? “I suppose it doesn’t change your game plan but it’s just a psychological advantage,” Donnellan said. “They’re in a routine, we’ve got to break our routine. You’re travelling three and a half hours up in the bus… It’s not what the lads are used to doing. “You’re playing in a strange pitch, a strange environment. It takes you a good 15-20 minutes to get used to it. At that stage, the home team could have a lead on you and then you’re chasing the game.” Celtic’s FAI Junior Cup ambitions came to a disap-
pointing end when they were beaten by North End United last month. It was their first defeat of the season, but the manager has been pleased with the manner in which his players have responded since then. “The best reaction of all was to go out the following weekend and beat Waterford Crystal away from home, after extra time. So whatever fears you had about a team who’s lacking confidence, it was certainly put to bed that day. “Unfortunately we haven’t had a game since but we bounced back well and training has been going well. The lads have put in a good effort. No one’s heads were down – I mean, we were disappointed of course at losing but ultimately we’ve always felt the FAI and Munster Junior are bonuses. It’s still all about trying to win your domestic league and your cup.” The Hoops will head into the game with virtually a clean bill of health, although long term injury concern Chris O’Leary is still a couple of weeks away from making his return. On another note, my comments last week about Celtic and games in hand have apparently gone down like a lead balloon with a few readers. I was definitely surprised at the response but I suppose I can see why one or two people might have had a problem with it. I wasn’t trying to suggest that the current team are sitting around doing nothing because I’m well aware of how many games they’ve played in all competitions. With the success they’ve had in the FAI and in Munster,
they haven’t had too many weekends off in fairness to them. Really what I was referring to was the observation – made by others before me - that Celtic often seem to have games in hand at this stage of the season. That has certainly been the case since I came back playing a couple of years ago. Maybe it hasn’t always been the case. And even if it has, maybe it has never been an intentional tactic. I don’t know. But even if a club did hypothetically have a preference for playing games at a certain stage of the season, so what? There’s nothing untoward about trying to play fixtures when it suits. Every team does that. I asked Eoghan Donnellan about it and he clarified that it’s not a tactic by Celtic and it certainly hasn’t been in the three years he’s been involved with the senior team. (He also said he read the article and took no notice of what I said, which is more in line with the type of reaction I was expecting if I’m being honest.) As I said last week, the whole issue doesn’t bother me and it doesn’t bother Athletic. We have to win our games regardless of what anyone else does, and we have enough to be worrying about in that regard.

Joint Winners Of February Manager Of The Month It was a case of honours even at the end of February as Philip Kelly and Kevin McCarthy finished joint top of the monthly Killarney Advertiser Fantasy Premier League. Philip (Glenflesk) and Kevin (Fossa) both finished on 229 points for the month, four ahead of Eoin Fitzgerald and Garry Flynn who both got 225. Jerry O’Shea completed the top five on 224. Both winners picked up a €25 voucher from tournament sponsor Brian James. The victors captained Mohamed Salah ahead of Liverpool’s trip to West Ham in he final gameweek of the month and not for the first time this season the Egyptian came up trumps, scoring once and providing an assist in the Reds’ 4-1 win to earn 20 points. They both also got an eight-point contribution from Roberto Firmino to help them to the top spot. Kevin is also running away with things in the overall table as he finds himself 69 points clear of Patrick Collins. Shane Lynch is in third with Brian O’Mahony fourth and Donal Cahill fifth. Speaking at the prize giving, Adam Moynihan congratulated Kevin and Philip on their win. “Well done to the boys,” he said. “They got their team selections right on the last day. In a way, they’ll be kicking themselves that they didn’t manage just one more point but I’m sure they’ll put the vouchers to good use.”

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy
Last weekend saw a break in international rugby as the NatWest 6 Nations took a hiatus ahead of the final two rounds of action, which will culminate on St Patrick’s Day. Storm Emma ensured that no rugby at any level took place last weekend, and the PRO14 took a break also. The only matches that took place in the PRO14 were the two matches in South Africa where the Southern Kings walloped the Drag-
Scotland Capable Of Shocking Ireland ons 45 points to 13, and Connacht avoided the snow by travelling to Bloemfontein. The westerners were unlucky to lose by a solitary point with the home side scoring a last gasp penalty to seal the win. From looking at Instagram, the Connacht team enjoyed the fantastic weather down south! Tomorrow the NatWest 6 Nations returns with Ireland taking on Scotland at the Aviva at 2.15pm and France playing England in Paris at
4.45pm. On Sunday, Wales host Italy at 3pm. This makes for a very interesting weekend of rugby as the championship could be all but decided if Ireland can continue their winning run and add in a bonus point for good measure. The Aviva is sold out in anticipation and tickets are as rare as hen’s teeth. Ireland defeated Wales at the Aviva two weeks ago and Scotland shocked England and are more than capable of shocking Ireland. Howev-
er, Joe Schmidt will have his charges well-prepared for the visit of Gregor Townsend’s men. Scotland are boosted by the return of 10 players from injury including former British and Irish Lion Ritchie Gray and Ireland must make do without Munster’s Chris Farrell who was Man of the Match in the Wales game. Farrell, who was injured during a training open day in Dublin, will be a huge loss. Come on Ireland!

Next Sunday 11th March €3,950 Killarney Golf & Fishing Club – Men’s Club Club Captain Derry McCarthy on behalf of the whole Club wishes to send our sincere condolences to Katie O’Connell, Competition Secretary of our Ladies Club on the recent death of her beloved mother, Lady Elizabeth O’Connell of Lakeview House, Fossa, and to all of the extended O’Connell family. The O’Connell family have been synonymous with Killarney Golf Club since the Club’s inception in 1893 when we were located at Deerpark, which was located at the North side of Killarney town, part of which is now the bypass road. Sir Morgan O’Connell in the early 1900s presented a very fine cup, The O’Connell Cup, valued at 10 Guineas, to the club for a Men’s Club Competition. In the 1930s it was Sir Morgan O’Connell who suggested to Lord Castlerosse that the Western Demesne, at Mahony’s Point would make an excellent location for a Golf Course, when it became necessary to find a new golf course location, as Deerpark was no longer feasible as the Club’s location. Lady Elizabeth herself was very involved in the Girl Guide movement, and many young girls in Killarney and its surrounding areas were introduced into the Girl Guide movement by Lady Elizabeth O’Connell in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Due to the continued inclement weather with Storm Emma and the Beast from the East clashing then our planned Competition for Sunday the 4th of March was cancelled once again, so accordingly we do not have any Competition results to report this week.
