PAGE SIX Almost €1.2m Government Traffic funding for Kerry Airport “We will continue to fight for Killarney” – says Chamber President KERRY Fine Gael TD and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, has announced major funding of €1,198,846.73 for Kerry Airport towards operating expenses. This Government funding from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport will go towards the operating costs associated with providing essential services in the areas of safety and security and is in addition to a further €1m announced by Minister Griffin for Kerry Airport earlier this year for capital works. The Government also provides €7.252m for operating the two PSO services between Dublin and Kerry and
Dublin and Donegal. Minister Griffin said this funding announcement is further proof of the Government’s strong commitment to Kerry Airport, which plays a vital role in the economic and social well-being of the people of the county. “I am glad to see this substantial funding coming to Kerry, on top of the large capital grant for Kerry Airport that I announced earlier this year and the continued Kerry Dublin flight subsidy,“ he said. “The Government’s continued strong support for Kerry Airport represents major support for rural Ireland and is helping to sustain jobs and create new ones.”
Man arrested after standoff with Gardai in Killarney BY MICHELLE CREAN
A potentially life threatening incident, which included negotiators, members of the Garda Emergency Response Unit and emergency services, was brought to a peaceful conclusion in a Killarney estate this week. The tense stand-off, which took place in a house in the early hours of Wednesday morning at Pinewood Estate, lasted almost three hours, when a male aged in his 40s made a threat of self-harm to himself and threats to harm two others. Local Gardai, the emergency services, negotiators and a Critical Incident Commander rushed to the scene shortly before 2am - but a tense
standoff ensued until 4.30am - when the man eventually agreed to voluntarily leave the house. The male was subsequently arrested under the Mental Health Act and received medical attention. This week Garda Superintendent Flor Murphy for the Killarney Division praised his team saying it was a difficult and sensitive incident. “I’m pleased that the matter was resolved peacefully,” Superintendent Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “I want to acknowledge the professionalism and sensitivity of my staff the way this matter was resolved and brought to a successful conclusion.”
Footpath now safer says local councillor A route heavily used by pedestrians is now safer thanks to Council works this week. Overlaying work on the footpaths outside Aldi, at the Countess Road/ Park Road junction stretching from the entrance to Park Drive to Countess Bridge, began on Tuesday night. Cllr Donal Grady, from the Killarney Municipal District, who allocated a large portion of his councillor allocation funds for
the works welcomed the move, saying it was long overdue. “It’s important to get that footpath done,” Cllr Grady said. “It’s heavily used by pedestrians and it was a safety issue for children attending St Oliver’s National School, Ballycasheen. The Council took a hedge away there two to three years ago and left it in a state. That just shows how town council is missed in Killarney.”
Killarney’s traffic issues and low occupancy levels in winter were key issues raised at the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce business meeting held last night (Thursday). Business people from the town gathered in the Killarney Avenue Hotel at 6.30pm for the annual general meeting (AGM) , where outgoing President Paul O’Neill addressed members. CEO of Kerry County Council Moira Murrell, who was due to present ‘Transportation Plans for 2019’ for Killarney town, was unable to attend. In her place was Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Services, Charlie O’Sullivan who outlined transportation plans to members present. While Killarney is doing extremely well in the busy summer months, concern has been voiced that occupancy levels remain very low during the winter shoulder season and that problem needs to be tackled as a priority, outgoing Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President, Paul O’Neill, told the meeting. He said the most significant finding in the TEIR One economic impact study, commissioned by the Chamber, was that, overall, occupancy levels were found to be 10 percent below the national average and five percent down on the south west. “A significant project backed and resourced by Fáilte Ireland and Kerry County Council, in partnership with Killarney Chamber, is well underway and there is one clear objective – season extension,” Mr O’Neill said. “If we can add two or three busy weeks to the year, and more in time, this will benefit the town hugely, sustain employment and add to those all-important numbers.” Killarney will have the benefit of Wild Atlantic Way Gateway status next year and that should be a boost, the meeting heard. “The national purse-strings are now beginning to loosen and Killarney, like so many other places, is badly in need of investment. There have been numerous town enhancements over the last few years, in collaboration with the Tidy Towns and Killarney Municipal District, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kerry County Council for the continued positive working relationship,” Paul O’Neill said in his final address as president. “Yes, there have been times where we have been frustrated by the pace of activity on certain projects, and I’m sure that
Paul O’Neill.
they have tired of our pestering, but we have a constructive relationship. “We will continue to fight for Killarney and for our fair share of the national and county spoils”. TEIR One has enabled Chamber to factually argue its case for more funding and resources but it has also helped it to establish a reputation nationally as a progressive organisation to be taken seriously. “We plan to build on TEIR One over the coming years with updated reports.” Mr O’Neill said at the start of his two-year term in office, one of his main objectives was to establish Killarney as Ireland’s leading accessible destination and, since then, Fáilte Ireland has designated Killarney a pilot destination. “The ‘Destination For All’ project is progressing very well. We launched our plans in October and we will be ramping up activity and awareness, both locally and nationally, in 2019. “Of course, there is the moral and social benefit but with Killarney positioning itself as the leading destination for everyone, I know that there is a massive economic potential as well,” he said. Other projects that will be significantly advanced next year include the development of a new heritage trail, with electronic visitor maps, an upgrading of information panels and maps at various points at entrances to the national parks and the creation of a series of promotional videos targeting the shoulder season. “These projects are supported by the Kerry County Council Community Support Fund and we thank the local authority and the elected members for their collaboration,” he said. “We live in one of the most vibrant towns in Ireland and this organisation embodies that energy like no other. I must say that it has been a pleasure and an honour to work with so many talented and passionate people”.

No grounds for discrimination found against Killarney hotel where Travellers met to discuss discrimination, and they felt “quite aggrieved” at the claim being brought against them. “My client will say you were barred from the premises previously,” Mr Murphy put it to Vera O’Donovan. Ms O’Donovan of 36 Deerpark Crescent Killarney, denied she had ever been barred previously for insisting on being served after the bar had closed. She described how on March 23, accompanied by her elderly parents and her husband, she lunched at the hotel as part of a birthday celebration. They had been served food. But when she went to buy drinks at the bar, she was refused and the security person called. Ms O’Donovan said the barmaid told her she had instructions to serve her food only, and not drink. “She said I can give ye food, not drink. I got offended by it when she said “ye”. I took it to mean“ ye” meant Travellers,” Ms O’Donvan told Judge Waters. She did not seek an explanation at the time, and did not meet the security man because her elderly parents were with her and she did not want to delay. A Christening party was taking place and other members of the Traveller Community were being served, she agreed with Mr Murphy. In response to her solicitor Paul O’Donoghue, Ms O’Donovan said a few
weeks later she served notice on the hotel under the Equal Status Act claiming discrimination on the grounds of being members of the Traveller Community. The hotel had made no reply. A second person, John O’Brien of 211 Ballyspillane, Killarney said on the day in question when he went to order two Baileys for himself and his wife, having had lunch, he was refused. “They can’t take your money for food and hunt you out for drink,” Mr O’Brien said. He rejected the hotel’s claim he had previously been barred, saying he had never been barred and never been in trouble because of fighting and such. He saw other Travellers at a Christening party being served. “I have lived 54 years in Killarney, all my life. I know what discrimination is,” said Mr O’Brien. He “assumed” he was refused because he was a Traveller, he replied to Judge Waters. Hotels in Killarney were “too cute” to say their refusal was because he was a Traveller, he said. Asked by the judge if he understood what discrimination was, Mr O’Brien replied: “I do very well. All my life.” The hotel had “a reputation for serving certain members of the Traveller Community” but it did not serve all Travellers, Mr O’Brien insisted. A third applicant would be giving the
same evidence, their solicitor Paul O’Donoghue said. Referring to the Equal Status Act which has eleven categories including membership of the Traveller Community, gender, family status, religion, age, race and disability, Judge Waters said for the case to succeed, the “sole reason” drink was refused had to be because of membership of the Traveller community. He also said a licensee was entitled to serve food and not serve drink. “A publican has a duty of care and can refuse for a variety of reasons with impunity, but what they can’t do is discriminate,” Judge Waters said. “What appears to have happened is for some reason alcohol was not served to them and I’m being asked to make a leap and say that’s because they were members of the Traveller Community,” the judge remarked. However, other members of the Traveller community were being served he noted. “Clearly there is not discrimination on the basis of membership of Traveller Community. They may be refused for some other reason, I don’t know,” Judge Waters said. That the applicants had been refused purely on the basis of being Travellers had been “flatly contradicted”, Judge Waters said.

Three members of the Traveller community in Killarney who were served lunch but refused drink at a well-known hotel have failed in their claim of discrimination. Judge David Waters at the District Civil Court in Killarney said a license holder was entitled to refuse people drink for “a variety of reasons”, and no reason need be given. Refusing to serve someone did not necessarily mean discrimination. Other members of the Traveller Community were at The Killarney Court Hotel for a Christening party at the same time as the applicants, between 2pm and 3pm on March 23 last, and were being served alcohol, the court heard. The Killarney Court Hotel, Rock Road/ Ring Road was also where the Tom Rights, a Traveller group formed to highlight alleged discrimination in Killarney pubs and hotels held their meetings in the run up to 2017 St Patrick’s Day parades, it also emerged. The application was brought under Section 19 of the Intoxicating Liquor Act 2003 and the Equal Status Act 2000. Penalties include temporary closure, compensation to the maximum amount at the District Court. Solicitor for the hotel, Conor Murphy said his client, Killarney Court Hotel and licensee Riobard Lyne, were so against discrimination that this was
Killarney garda wins national award for road safety initiative A sergeant at Killarney Garda Station was this week honoured with a national award for his dedication to road safety. On Wednesday, Sergeant Dermot O’Connell, sergeant-in-charge at the station, received the accolade from the Road Safety Authority (RSA) for his fun and interactive road safety campaign ‘Operation Páistí’, developed to make it easier for parents and children to understand the safest way to restrain children in cars. The award was presented to Sergeant O’Connell by RSA Chairperson Liz O’Donnell at the 11th annual ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety’ Awards at Croke Park. The campaign was initially implemented through the Garda schools programme and is now in the process of being expanded both divisionally and nationally, with the support of key agencies, including the Road Safety Authority, Department of Education and Skills, Local Authorities, Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and various media outlets. “Congratulations to everyone who received an award and on behalf of all road users, thank you for your commitment and dedication to making our roads safer,” Minister of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD said.

TOWNTALK Sadness at death of rallying stalwart Maurice Nagle Tributes were paid this week to Aghadoe man Maurice Nagle, a prominent member of the Killarney & District Motor Club, who passed away on Monday. Maurice was laid to rest yesterday (Thursday) in Aghadoe Cemetery, following 11am Funeral Mass at Church of Christ, Prince of Peace, Fossa. Maurice, father of five time WRC rally winner Paul Nagle, was one of the very early members of the club. He was the first clerk of the course for the Killarney Historic Rally, and ran the event for two years. Maurice was knowledgeable when it came to football and vintage machinery, but best known in rallying circles. Maurice was involved in every aspect of rallying over the years from a competitor to a service crewman to clerk of the course. Diarmuid Cronin, Killarney & District Motor Club Chairman, this week said that news of the death of Maurice Nagle was a great shock to club members. “He will be a huge loss to the club and to Irish rallying in general,” Diarmuid said. “Maurice was founding member of the Historic Rally 22 years ago in Killarney. “He was a straight talker and a person you could turn to for any task in the safe mind that it would be carried out extremely well. Motor sport will be at a loss by his passing.” Dermot Healy, Rally of the Lakes Clerk of the Course, added that Maurice had been there from the start of the Kerry &
District and Motor Club. “He was always there when you wanted him, you could ring him day or night and he would help if he could. He will be sadly missed in the motor club.” For many years Maurice performed road closing duties for the Rally of the Lakes and the Historic Rally in his faithful Lotus Cortina and Ford Escort Mk2. Just two weeks ago he was a contributor in the Historic Rally, when he performed road closing duties in his Lotus Cortina. He was a great source of advice and help to the Killarney & District Motor Club and its members over the years, Cormac Casey, who remembers Maurice fondly, explained. “His support for rallying went beyond the club, he travelled the country supporting other clubs in running their events,” Cormac said. “I had the privilege of working with Maurice on the first two Killarney Historic Rallies, an event he first introduced to the Irish Rally Calendar. As a newbie to the sport, Maurice was like that school teacher you feared, but at the same time respected but always attentive as the subject was delivered with passion and excitement. Maurice was a constant in rallying, demonstrating un-wavered support for the sport. Rallying has lost a stalwart of the sport.” Maurice, beloved husband of Angela (nee McCarthy), loving father of Paul and Alan, and much loved grandad of Zoey, Emma and Fitz-Maurice, will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
New video highlights work of first responders BY ADAM MOYNIHAN
After months of planning and filming, an innovative new video highlighting the lifesaving efforts of the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit has been released online. The video had almost 10,000 views on Facebook at the time of going to print and speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Assistant Co-ordinator Mabel Counihan said the group were delighted with the reaction so far. “It has been very, very positive,” she said. “We’ve had an awful lot of really good feedback. Some people just don’t know about us, so we decided to make the video to raise awareness. First responders are in most towns and villages but there are people who have never heard of us. This video will hopefully help to change that.” Mabel was full of praise for videographer
Niall Foley who made the video as well as the National Ambulance Service and sponsors for their continued support. The Killarney Cardiac Response Unit is on the front line, working alongside the National Ambulance Service to provide assistance to people in need until the ambulance arrives. First responders attend to calls involving stroke, cardiac arrest, chest pain and choking. The unit currently has 35 members, two of whom are always ready to respond. The hard-working volunteers, who have responded to 550 call-outs since the group’s inception in 2015, are always hoping to attract new members and they hope this professional and informative video will also be useful in that regard. Anyone interested in getting involved is invited to come along to training on

Killarney man is making “the best songs in Ireland” - Blindboy BY ADAM MOYNIHAN
Healy-Rae laughs off Waterford Whispers “tribe” video BY ADAM MOYNIHAN Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae has laughed off a parody video depicting a “newly discovered Healy-Rae tribe”, insisting that Kerry’s foremost political dynasty are not “precious” about themselves at all. The video, which was produced by satirical news outlet Waterford Whispers News and had over 314,000 views on Facebook at the time of going to print, shows two men bearing a resemblance to Michael and his brother Danny in their “natural habitat” – a forest. A news reporter enlists the help of a local interpreter familiar with the “ancient Healy-Rae” dialect to communicate with the tribe - but the plan backfires when the Michael and Danny look-a-likes attack the cameraman because he’s from Dublin. It’s not the first time the Healy-Raes have been the butt of a joke but speak-
ing to the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday), Michael said the video didn’t bother him in the slightest. “I was in the office the other day and I heard it going on in the background,” he said. “The lads were looking at it and they were all laughing. Jackie (HealyRae Jr, Michael’s son) said, ‘I must show you something!’ - the next thing the phones were ringing, and I never got to see it. “You have to be able to laugh at yourself. We’re not precious about ourselves at all. We don’t go around getting upset about people having a laugh. “If people look at the video and laugh at it, and it’s at my expense, I don’t care because I don’t give a damn what people think about me. If it puts a smile on some other fella’s face and takes their mind off a bad day or something, I’m quite happy.”
Gardaí investigate Healy-Rae death threat Gardaí in Dublin are currently investigating an incident in which Independent Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae was allegedly told that he would get “a bullet in his head”. The incident occurred last Tuesday (December 8) while Healy-Rae was stuck in traffic in the Dolphin’s Barn area of Dublin. A fellow motorist reportedly pulled up beside him, rolled down his window and verbally abused the Kilgarvan native. Deputy Healy-Rae told the Killarney Advertiser that he did not wish to comment on the matter but Danny Healy-Rae TD had previously confirmed that someone had “threatened” his brother. A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said that an incident was reported to gardaí in Kevin Street, and the matter is currently under investigation.

Sem boys prove they’ve got talent
BY MICHELLE CREAN
Students from St Brendan’s College on stage.
Talent scouts from one of the world’s leading TV shows have invited a team of musical students to England for an audition. Excited students from The Sem are now anxiously awaiting the call to go and perform at the next stage of the Britian’s Got Talent auditions - after taking part in local auditions recently. The boys, taught by music teachers Niamh O’Connell and Mish O’Donoghue, came to the attention of the show after their performance in Electric Picnic earlier this year and also following their recent Stormzy video online - which garnered over half a million views. According to Niamh, the students from first to sixth year that make up the St Brendan’s Music Ensemble are so happy to get to the next stage. “It was the success of Electric Picnic and the Stormzy wrap that they were contacted by a BGT Talent scout who asked if they’d audition. “We put something together and auditioned in Killarney. We got a call last Thursday to go to the UK to audition although we have no date yet. We don’t know what will happen or how far they’ll go but it’s a step in the right direction.” She added that although there is a great buzz in the school since – it’s back to the books for the boys who are currently completing their Christmas exams.

Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney,Kerry and beyond
More toilets and lights needed in town Killarney On Ice is a welcome attraction - though locating the rink to the side of Killarney House would be a better idea than taking up dozens of car spaces on Beach Road - and more magical to boot, methinks. Away from the skaters strutting their stuff, under the twinkling Christmas lights, two nights in a row last week I found people concerned with more basic matters - people searching for loos. Among them were mothers and young children. I witnessed people going to the door of the public toilet block. Closed alas! It was just after 7pm, there was a great atmosphere
all around Killarney and shoppers were plentiful in the town. In fairness, Killarney On Ice provide a portaloo with hand sanitiser just outside the ice rink, but with up to 100 people in the tent around at any one time, and shoppers out late, one toilet is hardly enough for the busy area. The public facility closes at 7pm and it is understood that it would cost too much to open them after that. Surely some of the money collected from hard pressed motorists of Killarney could be diverted to make Christmas in Killarney glide along more easily for everyone?
Meanwhile speaking of gliding, more lights are needed in car parks and lanes. For some reason the Innisfallen Mall is closing its back entrance at 6.30pm now - so 30 plus years of cutting through under cover to Main Street is over it seems. The alternative, the surrounding lanes, are not well lit or covered, and neither is the car park at Beech Road. It may be time for covered walkways or at the very least more bright lights at night? Speaking of shortcuts - the old shortcut into the town side of the courthouse has been closed off too. I thought the idea for Killarney was more walkways, more short cuts for walkers and more laneways?
Parents still take up the slack
Leo’s in love with himself Watching our great and benevolent leader, Taoiseach Leo followed by singer Michael Buble on the Late Late Show last week, I wondered which was more plastic. Surface bubbles is what came to mind. True Michael can sing but he’s largely a rip-off artist, trying to croon out Sinatra and other greats, and not always to good effect. I think all his songs sound the same. And then there is all that cringing emotion. He is so in love with himself! Before him we had the cringing side to Leo as the lead act. Leo has two great advantages as far as interviewers are concerned: he likes to talk about himself and he is incredibly unintellectual. So, before you need to tackle him about any other wider and difficult subject, like homelessness, for instance, you have plenty to talk about in his own personal stuff like loneliness and his first serious relationship. ‘Love Actually’ (remember Downing Street visit) is his version of the common man talk!
And Leo can’t get over himself! There is only so much time in anything - but does some of that limited time have to be given over to Kylie Minogue with Leo? This man is the CEO of Ireland Inc., as he termed himself on Friday night. Even when Tubridy broached the huge issue of the health service, an issue touching the nation, we were pulled back to personal emotional Leo. He has a grandmother who is in and out of a nursing home, he tells us. We are pulled back into planet Leo again. By the way, does it ever bother him that he has actually not won an election as leader of the party to lead the country? I felt, and not for the first time, our Leo seems to live in a cosmetic, eternally teenage, posh and very expensive, sheltered private school - and ultimately a silly little kind of world. I was glad I wasn’t the only one who felt this. I was talking to women the next day, some could not believe the audience clapometer reaction to the whole waffle!
Why is it that hard pressed parents are still having to collect for light and heat for the national schools for their children. We have heard a whole lot from Leo’s Government ministers about gender representation in third level in recent times, but the basics of education are being woefully ignored. Irish national schools were founded by the British Government in 1831 and the era of hedge school came to an end. They were very soundly set up, multidenominational, were properly constructed, and met the needs of their day. Is it not a disgrace that in 2018, busy parents have to spend time bag packing and collecting for basic school maintenance instead of being free to
spend some time with their children? Meanwhile Leo and his carnival of ministers, some of them woefully out of touch, focus on gender quotas for often meaningless overpaid third level jobs and meeting with Kylie Minogue! Who? I looked her up and she is a has-been, Botoxed soap opera singer, apparently. She would tie in though with our Leo studying hard at his posh school to make the points for medicine and only taking time off to watch an Australian soap! I wonder would Leo consider sending a note to the hard pressed parents I saw having to bag pack for their school in Dunnes in Killarney on Saturday? We have come a long, long way from De Valera.

Lebanon and, more recently, in Gaza. In November 2008, the people of Killarney posthumously presented the Killarney Humanitarian Award to local hero Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty in recognition of his immense humanitarian deeds. The award was subsequently renamed in his honour and presented to worthy recipients. Dr Beavis was one such recipient; he collected the prestigious award in 2014. Since his passing, members of the Hugh O’Flaherty Society have extended their sympathies and condolences to Dr Beavis’ wife Kate, children and grandchildren and to all his colleagues at IDEALS.
Athlete Jordan Lee with Brian O’Shea of Brian James.
Talented Killarney para-athlete Jordan Lee added another string to his bow this week when he was named Brand Ambassador for popular Killarney clothes store Brian James. Despite being born with just one full arm, the determined youngster has excelled at sports throughout his youth and he represented the Irish U-15 basketball team in 2014. He turned his attention to the high jump in 2017 and, remarkably, he won a bronze medal for Ireland just a year later at the 2018 Para Athletics European Championships in Berlin. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Brian O’Shea of Brian James said the collaboration was a perfect fit. “We are delighted to have Jordan on board as our Brand Ambassador,” he said. “We’re big fans of Jordan, both as an inspirational person and as an athlete, and we’re thrilled that he is now part of the Brian James family.”
“Medical professionals are decades behind on Lyme Disease” BY MICHELLE CREAN
A man whose life has been destroyed by Lyme Disease this week joined with Councillor Michael Cahill’s call for a dedicated Lyme Disease Treatment Unit in the south of Ireland as well as the urgent appointment of a Consultant in Infectious Diseases for University Hospital Kerry. Paul Doherty (52), who has suffered with Lyme Disease resulting in chronic pain and fatigue since being bitten by an infected tick in Kerry in August 1989, says there should be experts in every county. Living in Killorglin, Paul says he cannot work and can barely afford the expensive medications which help alleviate his worsening symptoms. He says although he looks healthy on the outside, Lyme Disease has destroyed his body inside, and has more recently suffered severe brain and heart problems as the disease goes deeper into his body. “The longer you have it untreated the
deeper it goes into the body,” Paul said. “Lyme attacks the brain and the heart. I now suffer from heart problems and have had multiple brain scans which show signs of lesions and white matter - but they can’t find anything wrong. Sometimes it feels like my head is in a clamp and I get dizzy spells.” He said medical professionals are decades behind when it comes to diagnosing Lyme Disease. “It’s almost like the HSE are denying it exists. They need Lyme literate professionals in every county - but the health professionals don’t seem interested.” Although his Irish Lyme tests came back negative Paul has been diagnosed with Lyme Disease in Germany after undergoing private tests – but treatment could cost up to €30,000. To help Paul fundraise, go to GoFundMe: Help Paul Doherty Beat Lyme Disease.
Paul Doherty is calling on the government to provide Lyme Disease experts in every county in Ireland.

University Hospital Kerry receives Irish Heart Foundation Healthy Eating Award
V
University Hospital Kerry has been recognised by the Irish Heart Foundation for leading the way in prioritising their employees’ heart health. The hospital was amongst 98 companies from around the country which were represented at the annual Irish Heart Foundation Happy Heart Healthy Eating and Active@Work Awards in the Gibson Hotel, Dublin. A pioneer in the field of workplace health, the Irish Heart Foundation has been supporting healthy workplaces nationwide for over 20 years through its Healthy Eating Awards which assist staff restaurants in adopting healthier cooking practices and providing healthier food choices There are three different levels of achievement – gold, silver and bronze – which are aligned to the Irish Heart Foundation and Department of Health’s Healthy Eating Guidelines. Implementation is overseen by the Irish Heart Foun-
dation’s panel of registered dietitians. University Hospital Kerry was awarded a silver Active@Work Award in recognition of their efforts to increase employees’ physical activity levels at work. Fewer than one-third of Irish adults meet the minimum recommended physical activity level of 30 minutes of moderate activity five times a week and Irish adults are spending on average 7.3 hours every day sitting down. “As a society, we have come a long way in reducing the number of people dying due to heart disease and stroke, however, there are worrying signs that increasing levels of obesity, diabetes and low levels of physical activity could undo this progress,” Tim Collins, CEO of the Irish Heart Foundation, said. The Irish Heart Foundation’s Happy Heart Healthy Eating and Active@Work Awards Pictured at the Irish Heart Foundation Workplace Awards in The Gibson Hotel from are supported by the HSE and Healthy l-r were: Tim Collins, (CEO Irish Heart Foundation) and Paudie McQuinn (University Hospital Kerry Campus), who achieved the Silver Active@Work Award. Local singer plans concert to raise vital funds

A local singer is doing her bit to help others by organising a charity concert this weekend. ‘What Is Christmas?’, established by Killarney singer Grace Foley, takes place this Sunday, December 16, at 7.30pm at the Church of the Resurrection Killarney, Park Road, in aid of Aware. And she’s urging the public to support it - as all funds raised on the night will go to helping the charity continue to provide support and information services to people impacted by depression. The Christmas concert with a difference had its inaugural performance in December 2015 at the Church of The Resurrection, she explained. “Christmas can be such a magical, happy time of year, but it can also be a very difficult time for some people,” Grace told the Killarney Advertiser. “I was aware of the fact that some people feel quite low and alone at Christmas and all the festivities and celebrations can be very overwhelming. I wanted to organise a concert that highlights all the different aspects of Christmas.” This year Grace is delighted to be joined on the evening by MC Liz Ryan, St. Oliver’s Primary School Choir led by Josephine Doncel, Grace’s newly formed Youth Performance Group, pianist Tony O’Flaherty, solo singers and the Church Of The Resurrection Folk Group ‘Risen’. “Using modern scenarios and real life images combined with music creates a very tangible experience and it touches people,” Grace said. “I hope even more people will come along this year and not only experience something quite unique, but also support a very good cause. “Aware is a very important charity. We all have either experienced low times in life, or know someone who has, so the support that Aware provides is invaluable. I urge people to continue to support this charity all through the year in any way they can.”

Kerry charity worker appeals for help Local Trocaire worker, Martina O’Donoghue from Barraduff is appealing to the people of her home county to support the development agency’s Christmas campaign. This year, Trocaire’s appeal focuses on families at risk of starvation and violence in war-torn countries across the world. The plea comes as 14 million people in Yemen are facing starvation and the prospect of the worst famine the world has seen in 100 years. A humanitarian crisis that is completely man-made and the result of conflict, the closure of trade routes and the destruction of the local economy, says Trocaire. In South Sudan, a brutal five year civil war has seen hundreds of thousands of people killed and more than 4.5 million people forced to flee their homes for survival. Trocaire is working with local organisations in both of these countries, as well as others around the world, to bring aid and medical care to people trapped in the middle of conflict and to help those who have fled war to build a new life. “I would like to say a huge thank you to the people of Kerry for their continued support - the impact we can make because of your donations cannot be underesti-
mated,” Martina, who is currently in Uganda, said. “However, there is much more to be done. This Christmas, as we look forward to spending time with our loved ones, we would ask people to also think about the families across the world who are facing fear and war. “Millions of people in countries such as South Sudan have had to flee for their lives, leaving everything they own behind. Many of these families have been split up as they trek across the country in search of safety. In Yemen, innocent children, women and men are being pushed to the brink of starvation as a result of violence, airstrikes and blockades. She added that Trocaire is working to help bring lifesaving relief but can’t do it without the generous support of the public. “I would appeal to people across the county to help us bring food, water, shelter and safety to those desperately in need this Christmas and beyond.” Last year, Trocaire reached more than 2.8 million people facing extreme poverty across the developing world – from Syrian refugees fleeing conflict to the drought and famine in east Africa. To support Trócaire’s work, you can donate at www.trocaire.org/christmas or by calling 1850 408 408.

Across the country, a total of €150,000 worth of donations has been collected to support families in need in their local communities. Some of the organisations benefiting from the appeal in Kerry include Adapt House and Tralee Food Run. 14.12.18 Local election
Jackie Healy-Rae Junior plans local council seat Michael Healy-Rae’s son Jackie HealyRae Junior has this week announced his plans to enter the political arena. The 23-year-old, who is currently parliamentary assistant for his father Michael, plans to fight for a seat in the new four seat Castleisland Constituency. Following on from Boundary Commission’s most recent report, it has put forward the recommendation that for the upcoming 2019 Local Elections there will be now six constituency’s in Kerry, an increase from four in 2014. His father Michel this week said that he believes that Jackie is the ideal candidate to fight for a seat in the new four seat Castleisland Constituency. “I wish him every good luck in his endeavours in trying to get elected to Kerry County Council,” Mr Healy-Rae said.
“Getting elected to the council is extremely difficult and I would earnestly hope that the people of the Castleisland area will be willing to give him an opportunity. All everyone in life wants is an opportunity and a chance, and I hope Jackie can be given that and I would be very grateful for it.” Talking about his election plans, Jackie Junior said it would be a huge honour and a privilege to serve where his grandfather, father, uncle, and now both cousins serve. “It really would be huge, but I can’t really even think about that,” he said. “There is a long road ahead of me and the people will have their say. I won’t even dare to dream about it, but obviously it would be a massive achievement.”

Students plan to become savvy savers with new school bank
Some super savvy savers at one local school are planning to teach the importance of banking to younger students. Transition Year students from St Brigid’s Secondary School launched their ‘Inside Out’ bank in their school canteen on Monday. As part of the AIB Build A Bank Challenge and under the guidance of teacher Ms Brosnan the students are focusing on the theme of ‘wellness’. At their launch they raffled a hamper to their customers thanks to the generosity of the businesses in the town. They are also planning to hold different events to raise money for their school throughout the year with the aim of helping students become savvy savers and learn about the importance of money and saving, while also giving back to the school and its students. “It’s great to be a part of the AIB Build A Bank Challenge and for the girls to be so involved and enthusiastic about their bank and giving back to the school,” teacher Ms Brosnan said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for them to open their horizons and to get the experience of running a small bank like this.”

Chose the perfect gift at O’Leary’s Expert Electrical
With Christmas just around the corner O’Leary’s Expert Electrical Killarney have come up with some great gift ideas. From the Cordfree Stick Vacuum, the Dyson V10 comes recommended as the best cordless vacuum cleaner Dyson has ever made as it possesses a supreme level of powerful suction. “The V10 is this year’s model of the year by the Dyson range,” Steve O’Leary, from O’Leary’s Expert Electrical, said. “This particular unit has a longer run time on charge with up to one hour vacuuming, and the container is more streamlined and easier to carry.” For the techies and not so technological minded in the household, Goggle Home, which links into your WiFi, is an ideal gift. With a sleek design it’s the perfect gift no
matter where it’s placed around the house. O’Leary’s stock two sizes; the smaller speaker costing €35, while the main home hub comes in at €150. “The initial set up is on the phone app then it’s all voice control,” Steve explained. “It’s a brand new product which came into our shop only last week.” For a more personalised present, the ever popular Bose headphones are ideal, he added. O’Leary’s stock a full range of Bose products, which are all high end. However, it’s specifically the Bose QC 35 Bluetooth Noise Cancelling Headphones recommended as the perfect gift, as they’re a premium quality product. Currently they’re reduced from €379 to €329 – but hurry as it’s only until stock lasts.

A Killarney woman who has devoted much of her life to advocating for Traveller’s rights was awarded ‘Woman of the Year’ on Wednesday night. Brigid Quilligan was presented with the award by President Emer Moynihan and members of the Killarney Soroptimist Club at a dinner in the Gleneagle Hotel. The award was given in recognition of her determination and commitment when advocating for Traveller rights, achievement of Minority Ethnic Status for the community, and for being a role Brigid Quilligan model for young Travellers everywhere. “Soroptimists strive for human rights for all and in particular to advance the status of women,” Emer Moynihan, President of Killarney Soroptimists, said. “Brigid has balanced the importance of respecting the traditions of her community with the importance of growing, evolving and moving forward in a changing Ireland. “She is a Killarney woman who has devoted much of her life to advocating for Travellers rights. This led to her being awarded an Honorary Doctorate from University College Cork. A passionate and articulate champion for Travellers, she is a former director of the Traveller Movement and currently the manager of the Kerry Traveller’s Health and Community Development Project.” She added that Brigid has worked to secure recognition of the Traveller Community as an ethnic minority and she has also represented the Irish Traveller Movement on the UN Human Rights Committee.

Retired teachers gather for dinner and AGM 86 members of the Kerry Branch of Retired Teachers’ Association Ireland (RTAI) gathered last week for their AGM and dinner. The group, which consisted of members from all over the county met at the Brehon Hotel, Killarney on Wednesday December 4, beginning with Mass at 11am, celebrated by Fr Kieran O’Brien in honour of deceased members, followed by a very informative meeting, where all officers were re-elected unopposed. “Reports were given by our treasurer our secretary and by our social secretary,” Mícheál Ó Cinnéide, Leas
Chathaoirleach, said. “Understandably at such a meeting issues of pension, taxation, etc., were discussed. “We are indebted to Brian Mangan from the National Executive Committee (NEC) for the information he gave us.” He explained that the social side of RTAI is very important and many interesting things were undertaken in 2018. “There were a number of walks undertaken in Listowel, Killarney and in West Kerry especially to Loughadoon where Br Daithí O Conaill gave very valuable and
interesting information on the Passage Tomb (akin To Newgrange), which has been uncovered there. “We had a very interesting day visit to Spike Island in Cork in the most pleasant of weather and we are already planning events for 2019. We are travelling to Annascaul to visit the birthplace and tomb of Tom Crean and also of sculptor Jerome O’Connor. There will be many more exciting trips also.” At the conclusion of the meeting they enjoyed a most pleasant and enjoyable lunch at the Brehon, he added. “A presentation was made to Fr Kieran for his help and consideration in saying the annual Mass.”

Kerry duo go on a festive Winning Streak and share €61,000 Two Kerry men donned their Christmas jumpers and shared a total of €61,000 when they appeared on last weekend’s National Lottery Winning Streak game show on RTÉ One. Mark Sugrue, a barman from Castleisland, won a prize of €33,000 which included an electric car worth €25,000 and €8,000 in cash. Garda David Morris, who lives in Cromane, won a total of €28,000 in cash when he played the show on behalf of his sister who lives in Dublin. A barman for more than 10 years Mark is getting ready for his busiest time of the year as the Christmas festivities begin to peak. He works in Kearney’s bar in Castleisland and his boss, Betty O’Connell, was among his supporters in the Winning Streak audience on Saturday. Mark is one of three children – he has two sisters, Lorraine and Leanne – who also supported him in studio along with their parents, Maura and Denis. After the show, the family had a double celebration as Mark’s Winning Streakmad grandmother, Lil, marked her birthday. Garda Dave Morris is originally from Inchicore in Dublin living in Cromane, for the past 11 years. His wife Valerie is from the town so the couple decided to make the move down south when he got the opportunity with work. His beat is the Portmagee and Valentia Island areas – which come with great views Puffin Island and Skellig Michael off the south coast. His is a one-man station so he knows the local community inside out. He has been married to Valerie for the past 14 years and the couple have three children: Lily, Anna and Jack who were all excited to cheer their dad on in the show as he played for his Dublin based sister, Anne Morris. He had no hesitation in stepping up to the plate and going on Winning Streak for his sister. He certainly did her proud, bagging her €28,000 in Christmas cash. The National Lottery game show, co-presented by Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy, features some perennial favourite games as well but also brand new games including Play or Pay, Roll for Riches, WinFall and Electric Dream – where one player will win an electric car worth €25,000. The show will return to RTÉ One screens on Saturday January 5 as it takes a break over the Christmas period.

Mary and Adrian say ‘I Do’
Wedding Feature Wedding congrats to Mary Murphy and Adrian O’Connell from Gneeveguilla who were married recently in the Church of Holy Rosary, Gneeveguilla. The couple’s daughter Kayla Marie O’Connell made it a very special day performing her duties to perfection as Maid of Honour. Chief Bridesmaid was Mary’s first cousin Elaine O’Riordan, with her other first cousin Jacqueline Murphy and good friend Elaine O’Donovan as Bridesmaids. Best Man was Adrian’s friend Tommy Murphy, and friends Denis Nagle and Billy McCarthy as Grooms-
men, while Adrian’s nephew Liam Lawlor was superb as he carried out his Pageboy duties. Bride’s Little Escort was Mary’s nephew Jamie Mícheál Murphy, and Groom’s Little Escort was Brian Lawlor, Adrian’s nephew. Mary is daughter of Donal and Peg Murphy and Adrian son of Tim and Margaret O’Connell. Adrian’s three sisters Siobhan Lawlor, Elaine O’Leary and Ann Marie O’Connell were also there on the day to help the couple celebrate, as were Mary’s three brothers Patrick, Michael and Donal Murphy, along with plenty of family and friends who all enjoyed the
reception afterwards in the Great Southern. However, before the couple could officially relax and enjoy the warmth of the indoors they were whisked off to Killarney Golf Club where photographer Mícheál O’Sullivan took lots of fabulous photos. Speaking about her day, Mary said that although it was cold – they had a ball. “Adrian arrived at the church in style in a Mk2 Escort,” she said. “Adrian’s three sisters and a friend Catherine Dillane, sang at the church and were amazing. They did a brilliant job.”

Powerful message shared at public talk BY ADAM MOYNIHAN
‘Racism is an issue that exists in every community and if it’s not openly evident, it may be just under the surface’. That was the powerful message shared at ‘A Conversation about Racism’, a public talk hosted by Kerry Against Racism at Killarney Library on Tuesday night. Attendees heard first hand from people living in the community about concerns related to racial equality. Guest speaker Shahidah Janjua, who is an author and feminist activist, spoke from a sociological perspective about racism, where it comes from and how it can spread, while John O’Shea of Kerry Against Racism/ENAR Ireland discussed legislation and the issue of hate crimes. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser after the event, Mr O’Shea said that racism is a problem all over the world, including in Killarney. “It’s definitely happening everywhere but a lot of it doesn’t get reported,” he said. “There might be a punch-up on the street and someone might use a racial slur, but that might not be picked up on when the guys get arrested. It just comes down to assault and the rest of it disappears.” Ireland has one of the highest rates of
hate crime against people of African descent in Europe but Mr O’Shea says a “gap in legislation” is leading to a lack of convictions. “Unlike other European countries such as the UK and Sweden, Ireland doesn’t really have any legislation in place that recognises aggravated versions of crimes. “So, for example, if somebody is assaulted on the street in England, that comes under ‘offence against the person’ legislation. But if somebody was using racial slurs while they committed the assault, that would come under a separate piece of legislation for aggravated offences, which would have more severe penalties. “We don’t have that here in Ireland.” Issues related to the Travelling Community were also discussed on the night, such as institutionalised discrimination towards Travellers in the job market. “There are all these myths that one group are getting everything, and another group aren’t,” Mr O’Shea said. “People complain that, ‘Travellers aren’t an ethnic group’ or ‘asylum seekers are lazy’. There’s a lot of hostility towards specific groups but a lot of it is under the surface.”

Aghadoe co-living property officially unveiled An innovative new property that has been described as the first of its kind in the county was officially unveiled in Killarney this week. Abode Killarney is a co-living property in Aghadoe that offers “private living with community aspects”. Built on the former site of the German Flats, the property is comprised of 12 contemporary and urban styled apartments, with a distinct retro-style running throughout the property. Each apartment has its own kitchen, dining area and living area and the bedrooms are designed to present different living options for those who wish to have their own room or for those who prefer to share. Residents can enjoy a shared kitchen and dining area, cinema room, laundry, gym, co-working area and living/ chill out area, all designed to the highest standard. The people behind Abode say that community living is at the heart of the concept. challenges, and outings together,” Michelle said. “The focus is placed on individuals with shared values who embrace the community aspect co-living presents.” Developer Derek Twiss of Bond Street
Investments and his team have previously worked in the development of co-living properties in the UK and Ireland and they found that Killarney presented many unique aspects that mirror the values of co-living.
Abode Killarney will welcome its first residents from March 1 next year. They are currently taking enquiries via email at enquiries@abodekillarney. com. Visit www.abodekillarney.com for more.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Sesame Street unveils first homeless muppet For the first time, a resident of Sesame Street is experiencing homelessness, and the hope is that her story can help the millions of young children in the United States without homes to call their own. Lily, a 7-year-old bright pink Muppet, was introduced to the world in 2011. She was originally described as being food-insecure because her family lacked consistent access to food. Now, “Lily is the first Muppet we’ve created whose storyline includes that she is experiencing homelessness,” said Sherrie Westin, president of global impact and philanthropy for Sesame Workshop, formerly Children’s Television Workshop, which is the non-profit behind Sesame Street. In new online videos, stories and resources, Sesame Workshop has expanded Lily’s storyline to include that her family has lost their home and now must stay with friends. This homelessness initiative launched Wednesday as part of Sesame
Workshop’s Sesame Street in Communities programme. “When Lily was first launched, she came out as part of the food insecurity initiative. So she’s not brand new, but this seemed like a really perfect extension of her story, so that we could use her to help children identify with,” Westin said. “With any of our initiatives, our hope is that we’re not only reaching the children who can identify with that Muppet but that we’re also helping others to have greater empathy and understanding of the issue.” Although her journey with homelessness will not appear in televised episodes of Sesame Street at this point, she will be in separate videos and materials in the initiative. Some observers have joked that Oscar the Grouch has been living in a trashcan “since the Vietnam War”, but his character is portrayed as someone who loves trash and lives where he does by choice.
Trump Corner
Trump regifted presents to his son, Donald Jr US President Donald Trump has been outed as a regifter by his eldest son, Donald Jr. The younger trump revealed that he knows first hand because he has received things monogrammed for the sitting president on numerous occasions. He was responding to a reporter who asked him about the best and worst presents he had received from his father. “I’m the namesake, so I got regifted all of the things that were monogrammed for him at times,” Trump Jr told Extra TV. He added that his father may even have once regifted a present to Don Jr that he himself had given Don Sr the previous year. “There was one Christmas where he may or may not have given me the gift that I had given him the year before because I monogrammed it,” the first son said.
“And I’m like, ‘I know you didn’t get this,’ ‘How do you know that?’ ‘Because I gave it to you last year.’” Trump Jr added that he has not had much personal time with his father since he entered the White House, and that he looks forward to “getting him one-on-one and hanging out” during the holidays at the president’s Mar-aLago resort in Palm Beach. “It’s going to be interesting,” Trump Jr. said. He also painted his father, who is notoriously abrasive on social media and in press conferences, in a positive light. “If you think my father is funny on TV, you should see him around the holiday table, when everyone is vying for the food,” Trump Jr said. Donald Trump was slow to name his first son after himself, the president’s first wife Ivana Trump wrote in her memoir ‘Raising Trump’. “You can’t do that!” Trump apparently said when she proposed the idea. “What if he’s a loser?”

Statue of “racist” Ghandi removed from college campus A statue of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi has been removed from a university campus in the Ghanaian capital of Accra after a petition claimed that he was a racist. University of Ghana lecturers began a petition for its removal shortly after it was unveiled in 2016 by India’s former President Pranab Mukherjee. The petition said Gandhi was “racist” and African heroes should be put first. In the wake of the row, Ghana’s government at the time said the statue would be relocated. The university confirmed this, saying that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and Regional Integration was responsible. Mahatma Gandhi was one of the most celebrated figures of the 20th century. He is best known for leading non-violent resistance to British colonial rule in India. However, as a young man he lived and worked in South Africa, and although he has inspired people throughout the world his comments on black Africans have been controversial. In his early writings he referred to black South Africans as “kaffirs” - a highly offensive racist slur. He also said that Indians were “infinitely superior” to black people.
China detains second Canadian as tensions continue to rise As tensions continue to rise between Canada and China, a second Canadian has been detained in China on accusations of harming national security. It was confirmed yesterday that businessman Michael Spavor had been detained in addition to former diplomat Michael Kovrig. Canada drew the ire of Beijing after it arrested the CFO of telecoms giant Huawei at the request of the US. Meng Wanzhou has been bailed but may face extradition for fraud. She denies violating US sanctions on Iran through Huawei’s business dealings. China has threatened unspecified consequences if she is not released. So high-profile is the case that US President Donald Trump said he could intervene if it helped to avoid a further decline in relations between the US and China, which are locked in a trade war. However, Mr Trump’s own officials frowned on the idea, with US Assistant Attorney General John Demers remarking: “What we do at the justice department is law enforce-
ment. We don’t do trade.” Foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang addressed the matter on Thursday, saying the pair were “suspected of engaging in activities that threatened China’s national security” and had been put under “compulsory measures”, a usual reference to custody. Mr Lu said the “legal rights and interests of these two Canadians have been safeguarded” and that the two cases were being investigated separately. Asked if the detentions were in response to Ms Meng’s arrest, he said they were part of an “operation taken by China’s relevant national security authorities in accordance with the laws”.

Tubridy top earner at RTÉ More terrible weather on with €495k pay packet
the way this weekend
Figures released this week have revealed that Ryan Tubridy remained the highest-paid presenter at RTÉ in 2016 with a pay packet of €495,000, ahead of Ray D’Arcy, whose pay increased to €450,000. Mr Tubridy, the Late Late Show and radio host, has been the best-paid person at RTÉ since the departure of Pat Kenny from the broadcaster, and Mr D’Arcy has been in second place since rejoining RTÉ. His pay rise in 2016 is explained by the fact his Saturday night television chat show was only on air for part of 2015. Liveline host Joe Duffy came in third, earning €389,988, the same as the year before. RTÉ said the 2016 figures represented a 32 per cent reduction on the fees paid in 2008, but total pay for the ten best-paid on-air individuals went up by about €74,000 in 2016 compared to the year before. The increase took their combined pay bill across the €3 million mark. Current affairs presenter Seán
O’Rourke moved up to fourth place with pay of €308,964, up from €290,113 in 2015. Marian Finucane was the highest-paid woman, receiving €300,617 for her services while radio and Prime Time presenter Miriam O’Callaghan was paid €299,000, the same as the previous year. Claire Byrne was paid €216,000, up from €201,500, which put her in sixth place, while Bryan Dobson, who was the co-presenter of the Six-One news bulletin at the time, was the seventh-highest paid with pay of €198,146. The top ten is rounded out by two presenters who did not appear on the 2015 list. Soccer commentator George Hamilton rejoined the list in ninth position with pay of €186,195, while Radio 1’s Drivetime presenter Mary Wilson is a new entry in tenth, receiving €185,679. Ms Wilson’s addition to the list means this is the first time that four of the ten highest-paid presenters have been women.
Brace yourself: the terrible weather looks set to continue over the weekend. Conditions over the past few days have been miserable and any hopes of a milder weekend have been crushed by another dreaded weather warning from Met Éireann. A Status Yellow weather advisory for all of Ireland has been issued for Saturday, with a warning that there is “potential for severe weather”. The warning will last from midnight tonight (Friday) and all through Saturday and hazardous conditions may result from heavy rain and possibly wind. A Status Yellow warning for rain and wind was in place in Kerry, Cork and Waterford yesterday evening with between 25mm and 50mm of rain expected to fall, with gusts reaching between 90 and 100 km/h. Conditions are expected to stay very un-
settled over the coming days, with more rain and strong winds forecast. Patchy rain and drizzle this morning will lead to more persistent rain travelling eastwards throughout the country. Coastal areas will be worst hit, with “near gale” winds hitting some counties. Friday night will be wet and blustery, with rain turning heavy and persistent overnight and a risk of some localised flooding. Heavy rain and a period very strong winds are expected for Saturday, and people are advised to keep up to date with the forecast as Met Éireann says the exact details of the weather system remain uncertain. Sunday will be brighter, with sunny spells and scattered showers, but there is a risk of hail and thunder in the west. Most areas will become dry overnight, with the rain returning on Monday and continuing into the week.
Google could face prosecution Returning mothers to get for naming accused tennis rankings protection
The Women’s Tennis Association has confirmed that mothers returning to the game will have increased protection for their rankings on the WTA Tour from next season. Players coming back from childbirth, or injury, will now be able to use their previous ranking to enter 12 tournaments over a three-year period. Serena Williams’ wish for returning mothers to be seeded in line with that ranking has, however, not been granted. The WTA has instead decided to guarantee they will not face a seeded player in a tournament’s
opening round. As things stand, players must begin their comeback within two years, and then have a further year in which they can enter eight events under their protected ranking - the ranking held at the start of their absence. Those rules also apply to players returning from injury. But there is currently no protection in place for seedings, with tournaments able to use their own discretion to seed players. The WTA’s rule change comes after the organisation canvassed the opinions of players earlier in the year.
Google could face prosecution for sending a mass email which included the name of the man accused of murdering British backpacker Grace Millane, New Zealand’s justice minister has said. The suspect was granted a temporary name suppression while he awaits trial, which makes publishing his name illegal. The email was sent to people who were signed up to receive the country’s top trends. Google said it did not know about the suppression order. Justice Minister Andrew Little told the New Zealand Herald that if the email breach was traced to any of Google’s New Zealand infrastructure then the firm could be prosecuted. Google has an office in
New Zealand with at least 20 staff and was set to add more employees this year. Several British news outlets have also named the murder suspect. In New Zealand’s court system, the accused and victims can ask to have their name suppressed, which means it becomes illegal to publish it in newspapers, online or anywhere else. The purpose is to protect people not yet proven guilty but also to have a fairer trial by ensuring the jury is not prejudiced by media coverage. In the Grace Millane case the accused was not given a suppression order by the Auckland district court, but his defence said they would appeal to a higher court which automatically triggers a 20-working day suppression.

Speed Limit
Big Brother cars The world of Big Brother could hit the car industry hard with the European Commission pushing for black boxes and active speed-limiters to be fitted to all new cars. The proposals for the systems, which will monitor speed and safety systems as well as mandating speed-limiting that changes automatically with speed limits, have been sent from the European Commission to the European Parliament for debate. The data-logging black boxes would collect and retain information “such as the car’s speed or the state of activation of the car’s safety systems before, during and after a collision,” the proposal read. The proposal’s EC sponsors insist it will save 25,000 European lives over the next 16 years. The proposal is already set to be op-
posed by the German government’s representatives, who are intent on protecting both an industry with high-power automotive products and its highspeed autobahns. Germany’s unlimited sections of autobahn are patrolled by fast domestic machinery from Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, BMW, BMW M, Audi, Audi Sport and even Ford with its Focus RS. Italy produces supercars from Ferrari and Lamborghini, and Maserati has plans for the all-electric Alfieri supercar by 2020. And even leaving the EU wouldn’t save Great Britain’s fast-car brands like McLaren, Jaguar and Aston Martin from the move as Prime Minister Theresa May has already confirmed her intention to adopt EU vehicle compliance regulations post-Brexit. The mandatory installation by manufac-

The VW dune buggy is back Killing off the Beetle hasn’t blunted Volkswagen’s love affair with its historic favourites, with sources confirming it will show a dune buggy concept about the time of next year’s Geneva motor show. Due to be seen around March next year, the reborn dune buggy will be a pure-electric model. It will be a modern interpretation of the classic Beetle-based machine, this time based on the Volkswagen Group’s upcoming Modular Electric Platform (MEB). It is being considered for production largely to add a sparkle and a bit of fun to the serious business of lowering local vehicle emissions. But while Volkswagen clearly has ownership of the Beetle,
Kombi/Microbus, it has no conceptual ownership of the dune/beach buggy. It was conceived by Californian engineer, sailor, surfer and boat builder, Bruce Meyers, who developed the dune buggy in 1964 based on a Volkswagen Beetle chassis and running gear. More than 6,000 of the California-built machines were sold.
turers of active speed-limiting systems, which automatically adapts to each speed-limit change would not be able to be deactivated from inside the car, nor be able to be tampered with from outside it. For safety reasons, drivers would still be able to exceed the speed limit by accelerating past the limiter, though the action would be recorded by the black box each time. The European Commission proposal is
for the data-loggers to have privacy protection, except when the information is needed to “conduct accident data analysis and assess the effectiveness of specific measures taken”. If the proposals pass the European Parliament, the Council will negotiate with member states to reach agreement early next year, and then all new cars will have to adopt the changes to meet type approval or they won’t be able to be sold in the EU.
Could these glasses cure travel sickness? Well, this set of specs might help. Citroen has stepped away from producing funky hatchbacks and crossovers for a minute to try and cure an ailment 30 million people suffer from: car sickness. It’s all thanks to a bizarre set of glasses – handily called ‘Seetroen’ – that when worn will stop you from feeling woozy, or worse. Consisting of four rings that wrap around your face, the rims are filled with a coloured liquid that simulates the horizon line to make you feel less sick while driving. Apparently, wearing the specs for 10 to 12 minutes gives your brain enough
time to resynchronise the movement perceived by the inner ear while your eyes are focused on a fixed object, so you’re less likely to get sick in your lap.

Garden maintenance is necessary to protect plants There are always things to be done in the garden, but at this time of year it is maintenance and cleaning, neither of which are my favourite jobs! Glasshouses should be tidied and cleaned, as bugs and diseases will lurk and survive in the relative warmth of the glasshouse. If you are keen to use the glasshouse during the winter, remember to insulate against frost, unless you have heating, of course. There are several ways in which to heat your glasshouse, however for safety reasons it has become impossible to buy paraffin heaters, which would have been the most common way of heating in the past. These days, most heating is done electrically, with heated beds being the most cost effective method. This essentially involves running specially designed heating cables under the beds, which keeps them at a constant temperature. Insulate with a horticultural grade bubble wrap. Remember, the only heat your polytunnel or glasshouse gets is that from the sun, which, in the winter can be very little, and disappears fast, or the heat from the ground. It is this ground warmth which is your main source of heating, especially at night, so if you have tender plants, protecting them from above with horticultural fleece will minimise the effects of cold air. If you have plants in pots outside, try to group them together. This
will keep the roots that bit warmer, especially during very cold spells. Covering over beds, both inside and outside, with black polythene and/or a mulch will prevent nutrients leaching out, and keep the soil a little drier. It will also benefit you in the spring when it comes to sowing and planting out potatoes - as the soil will be warmer. Cleaning out gutters is a necessary job at this time, not just for the house, but for greenhouses and double tunnels. They will be full of leaves and a blockage can end up causing a lot of damage. Waterbutts can also be cleaned, especially on the inside, to prevent a build-up of sediment, algae and bugs. Make sure drainage holes in pots are clear, and plants do not become waterlogged. Here in Kerry waterlogging is more of a problem than frost damage, so it is worth your while to put tender plants under cover. If you have Wisterias growing, they are due their winter prune. Wisterias are pruned twice a year, once in the summer, after flowering, and once in the winter. Prune sideshoots back to six buds in the summer, this keeps the plant in check and encourages the formation of flower buds. It also increases air circulation preventing disease. In winter, prune those same shoots back to three buds. This will ensure that flowers will not be obscured by leaves in the spring.

O’Donoghue Cup to conclude with three rounds in eight days Adam Moynihan Favourites Dr Crokes could be facing into three big championship games in just eight days as the East Kerry fixtures crisis took another unfortunate turn this past week. With players already angry about having to play up until Christmas, the last thing the East Kerry Board needed was another delay but unfortunately a bereavement in the Gneeveguilla club meant that last Sunday’s quarter-final against Dr Crokes was postponed. The semi-final had already been fixed for this weekend and the final for next weekend so the Board had no choice but to fix the game for this evening (Friday, December 14). If Crokes manage to beat Gneeveguilla tonight and holders Rathmore on Sunday, they will face Kilcummin in the decider on Saturday. That’s three knockout championship games in eight days in December. As bad as things have been with the East Kerry Championship in recent years, this will surely constitute one of the most dysfunctional stagings of the competition in its 64-year history. To be fair to the tournament organisers, they can’t do anything about a bereavement (I will stop short of blaming them for that) but anything can happen when you try to wedge one side of the draw, from Round 1 to final, into a 16-day period in December. The irony is that neither Gneeveguilla nor Dr Crokes wanted to play their quarter-final game on Sunday anyway. My understanding is that Gneeveguilla were missing a number of senior players and had resigned themselves to fielding a team made up of juniors and under 21s so as to avoid pulling out and incurring a hefty fine. Dr Crokes defender Fionn Fitzgerald got married up the country last Friday so the proposed fixture was far from ideal for the Lewis Road club either. It’s a sorry state of affairs when you’re looking ahead to an O’Donoghue Cup quarter-final and the word around town is that neither team wants to play. Sadly, it’s a sure sign of where the competition is in 2018. The tournament is being devalued at the moment, and that’s a description I’ve heard time and time again since I started writing about the issue a month ago.
Last week’s article
Last week I put forward an alternative football calendar that would see the group phase of a new-look O’Donoghue Cup taking place in January with the semi-finals and final being played after Kerry win/ get knocked out of the championship. The response to the article has been overwhelming. I knew people were unhappy with the current sit-
Last week I put forward an alternative football calendar and the response has been overwhelming uation but I couldn’t have predicted how universal the feeling of disillusionment actually is. Players, officials and supporters have all reached out to me over the past few days to voice their support. If I’m being honest, I don’t know if the schedule I shared is definitely the answer but one thing is clear: people are desperate for things to change. It’s funny, a lot of readers have said that the piece was controversial and joked that I’d have to watch my back, but how is it controversial if the vast majority of us are on the same page?
The next step
I’ve spoken to a number of club captains this week to see what the feeling is amongst the senior teams in East Kerry and the feedback so far has been very encouraging. Some clubs are still in action so they will naturally want to focus on football, but captains

of other teams have confirmed that they’ll be speaking to their teammates about putting their concerns in writing and submitting them to their clubs. I hope to talk to the remaining captains this coming week but my advice to them will be the same. Speak to your teammates, even if it’s just in the WhatsApp group, and see how they feel. If the majority are unhappy with the current schedule and feel as though changes need to me made, put your thoughts in writing and share them with your chairman. As players we tend to have a defeatist attitude when it comes to things like this because the GAA and the boards never seem to listen, but have some faith in your club. They will back their players if their players let them know how they feel. We can point the finger all day long but if we don’t act now to address this important player welfare issue, we’ll have no one to blame but ourselves.

Kerry showing Middle Eastern promise Eamonn Fitzgerald The fledgling Kerry team is alive and growing in the Dubai region and tournaments are a huge attraction there with up to 1,000 players participating. The Kerry Club was founded by members of the Middle East Kerry Society (MEKS) in May 2018. There are six players from Killarney: David Leacy, Jamie Wrenn, Galen Carroll, Billy Goulding, Frank McCarthy and Seán Corbett. The club was affiliated to the Middle East GAA board as the 15th club in the region in August 2018 and it is the third club based in Dubai. Kerry are the first county club in the Middle East and 2018/2019 will be their first season. The inaugural training session was held on August 29 and 32 players showed up on the first night. The club say their main aims are as follows: it is a welcoming and inclusive club for people of all backgrounds and skill levels and the focus is on the social aspect and enjoyment. They train and play “the Kerry way” with an emphasis on skill development and kicking. Players are asked to arrive 15 minutes before training to work on their kicking. Since its inception, the club has worked tirelessly to stick to these ideals, promoting a low commitment of one night per week training policy. A “total football” approach is adopted to training. No exercises or drill is carried out without a ball, and there is supplementing training with plenty of challenge games against neighbouring clubs. In short, no laps, no wire to wires, just all ball work. The club has been very successful at recruiting players who have not played Gaelic football for many years or those who had fallen out of love with the game due to the huge commitment involved back home. They have players from all four provinces, not just from Kerry. However, there is still a large Kerry presence, with approximately 20 players coming from the Kingdom. Peter Keane, the new Kerry boss, may be looking to this diaspora for players to be included in his panel. Three players in the club are novices to the game (one individual from Texas, USA and two Welsh lads).

It is a very young committee and all committee members are players also. The head coach is Dean Cassidy, a PE teacher from Kenmare who is only 23 years of age. He also juggles playing senior football in the Middle East with Dubai Celts.
2018/19 Season So Far
The club has three adult men’s teams with over 60 registered players in total. Since it’s a new club, they had to start at the lowest grade – Junior B. The A and B team play in the Junior B league, and the 3rd team (Social) play in dedicated social competitions. Social level is not part of a league structure. The A team is currently top of the Junior B league after two tournaments. With one more tournament to go in February, they are on track for promotion to

Junior A next season. The B team is mid-table in the Junior B league, but they won the plate competition at the Dubai games in October. They are hoping to finish as high up the table as possible by the end of the season. The Social team won the Bahrain tournament competition in November.
Future Plans
Looking to the future, the club has ambitions for its teams to move up the grades, with the ultimate goal of competing at senior level in the Middle East GAA Leagues. Next year, the club will launch its five-year plan in an effort to achieve both its on-field and off-field goals, ensuring a strong footing for the organisation in the years ahead. The initial successes of the club could not have been achieved without the support of the Kerry County Board (Tim Murphy and Maurice O’Meara) - who met with founding members of the club during the summer at the Centre of Excellence in Currans - the Middle East County Board and also sponsors, Kibsons International and Premier Brands International.
GAA in the Middle East
15 clubs and 106 teams spread across six countries play in the Middle East GAA Leagues. Gaelic football, ladies football, hurling, camogie are played, and now even handball is on offer. There is a wide geographical spread of clubs across the Middle East, with a heavy concentration of clubs in the UAE. The Chairman of the Middle East Board is a Kerryman – Tadgh Flahive from Listowel. He lives in Abu Dhabi and is a member of Abu Dhabi Na Fianna Club. The Middle East County Board runs a league over a number of tournaments, held across the region, and also a championship which is a standalone tournament at the end of the year. The logistics of the tournaments are huge. Over 1,000 players can play at some of the big tournaments such as the ones held in Dubai, Bahrain and Abu Dhabi. The season runs from October to March as it is too hot to play in the summer. Football, hurling and camogie is 9-a-side with a panel of 12 and rolling subs. The games are seven minutes a half and are usually played on a soccer pitch. The men’s Gaelic football has grades in Senior, Intermediate, Junior A, Junior B and Social. The standard, especially at senior level is very high.

It was a case of David v Goliath in Tullamore on Sunday last when Mullinalaghta St Columba’s defeated Kilmacud Crokes 1-8 to 1-6 in the Leinster SFC club final. They now face Dr Crokes in the All-Ireland semi-final on Saturday, February 16. More about that big clash in the New Year…

Captain Mark hits eight 3PTs as Lakers defeat Carlow

32 points from local lad Mark Greene propelled the Scotts Lakers to an impressive victory over fellow playoff contenders IT Carlow at the Auracle on Sunday. The captain drained 8 out of 11 three-pointers in a remarkable shooting display that will surely go down as one of the greatest by a St Paul’s player in many a year. Greene was simply unconscious from beyond the arc and his pinpoint shooting was a joy to behold. After missing two of his first three attempts, he really began to heat up in the second and third quarters, hitting six consecutive threes before eventually missing again in the final period. He finished with 32 points, impressively matching the combined contribution of foreign players Seán O’Brien (18) and Papito Hersisia (14). Speaking after the game, Greene said he was just feeling it. “Even the ones I missed felt good when they were leaving the hand,” he said. “You’re going to get games like that every year when the shots are falling. Sometimes you just get into a rhythm. It was certainly an enjoyable game.” The former Irish schoolboy international stepped away from the game of basketball while living in
France and Switzerland but he made his return to the court with the Lakers in 2017. After an up-anddown comeback season, he now feels as though his shot is finally coming back to him. “My scoring is getting a bit more consistent,” he said. “After eight years out I suppose it was always going to take a while to get back into the swing of things, but I’m getting there now. The legs feel good, the shot feels good… Everything is back in rhythm.” Greene is one of the few remaining Killarney players in the camp so supporters are delighted to see him doing so well. Big men Andrew Fitzgerald and Pádraig Lucey also have important roles on the team but last year’s captain Philip O’Connor is not currently involved due to work commitments. The Lakers have relied heavily on imports Seán O’Brien, Papito Hersisia and Dailian Mason to do the bulk of the scoring but Greene has averaged 20+ points in the Lakers’ last four games. “You have to get some contribution from the Irish camp,” Greene said. “It makes it too easy for teams if they just have to shut down Papito and Seán and that’s it. I think the team is gelling a bit now and

the ball is moving a lot better. Fellas know where they’re going to get their shots and we’re showing more patience in our offence. If I can average 21 or 22 I’ll be happy.” The victory over Carlow has solidified the Lakers’ position in the playoff spots but Greene says it’s difficult to predict what will happen in the New Year when teams from the north and the south meet for the first time. “We have Limerick this weekend and then we’re into the cross-conference games after Christmas,” he said. “We don’t really know what we’re facing in the Northern Conference but there will be a few good sides there. It will mix things up with everyone having to travel long distances as well. “Anything can happen.” MVP: Mark Greene was the difference between the teams. He scored eight 3PTs, twice as many as the visiting Carlow team managed between them.

Ireland’s own Lakers-Celtics rivalry is heating up Form
National League Div 1 Scotts Lakers v Limerick Celtics Saturday at 7.30pm (Killarney Sports Centre)
Verdict: Lakers by five.
Celtics talisman Turrell Morris scored 39 points the last time played in Killarney.
Adam Moynihan
In America, the LA Lakers and the Boston Celtics have been basketball’s fiercest rivals since the 1950s. The NBA’s two most successful franchises have won 27 championships between them, facing off in the Finals on no fewer than 12 occasions. Their Irish namesakes have a long way to go before they reach those heights but if their last meeting is anything to go by, Ireland’s version of the Lakers-Celtics rivalry could be heating up nicely. The sides clashed as recently as two weeks ago when Limerick dumped their Killarney counterparts out of the President’s Cup after an OT classic at the Auracle. Séamus Brosnan thought he had won it for the hosts in regulation but his buzzer-beating “three-pointer” was actually ruled to be a two. Unfortunately for Brosnan and the Lakers, that toe on the line proved to be crucial. A superb showing from Ohio guard Turrell Morris (39 points) helped the Celtics to a memorable win in overtime and the Lakers’ National Cup dreams were crushed in the cruellest fashion. What made the win all the more remarkable was the fact that Cormac O’Donoghue’s team had hammered the Celtics in the league just six weeks previous, Seán O’Brien leading the way with 29 points in a comprehensive 98-73 win. The Celtics exacted their revenge a fortnight ago. Can the Lakers return the favour on Saturday night?
Last weekend was a mixed bag for the Lakers as they followed up their defeat to first place Ballincollig on Saturday with a comfortable win over IT Carlow on Sunday. Ballincollig’s perfect record appeared to be in jeopardy late in the third when the Lakers led by four but the runaway leaders fought back in the final quarter and eventually won by five, 79-74. Mark Greene had the hot hand the following day against Carlow (see p3) and the Lakers won comfortably to get their playoff drive back on track. The Limerick Celtics improved to 9-5 last Sunday as they defeated the Portlaoise Panthers by 96-79. American star Morris chipped in with 22 points, two of which came via a spectacular alley-oop dunk off a clever inbounds pass (follow @AdamMoynihan on Twitter to check it out). Fabio Hernandez scored 18 and former Limerick footballer John Galvin added 16 for the Celtics, who now find themselves in a tie for third, three wins behind the Lakers with a game in hand. The Lakers will be keen to keep the Celtics at arm’s length heading into the Christmas break but it will take a big effort to keep Morris and co. quiet. If Seán O’Brien can cancel his fellow American out, or at least come close, the Lakers should have enough to get over the line.

Maes claims Munster League and Championship There was cause for celebration for Killarney Cycling Club this past week after a strong showing at the final round of the Munster Cyclocross Series and the Munster Championship. Experienced local rider Richard Maes secured the Munster League and Championship titles with his sixth league win at the final event, which was held at Clonmel Racecourse last weekend. Páidí O’Brien, a national champion from Cork, followed him for second and Matt Slattery, who hails from Killarney and represents Strata 3 VeloRevolution, took third.
John Crowley of Killarney Cycling Club was first M50 in the league and third for the championship, while Patrick Clifford finished second M40 in the league and took bronze in the championship. These positions were good enough to also earn the club the Team Prize for the Munster League. Fellow Killarney Cycling Club member Eoghan Crowley also finished first to clinch the U14 League and Championship titles. The next big race for the team will be the Nationals which will be held in Cork on January 13.
