PAGE SIX Killarney woman stunned to receive medal from Pope Francis BY MICHELLE CREAN A Killarney woman is still getting over the shock of being bestowed with one of the highest honours of the Catholic Church – a medal from the Pope. 77-year-old Bridie Cronin from Woodlawn was left stunned when presented with the Benemerenti medal - an honour awarded by the Pope to members of the clergy and laity for dedicated service to the Catholic Church. Bridie, a retired school teacher who spent 27 years in St Oliver’s NS, implemented the first Safeguarding Children policies to the Diocese of Kerry, helping every parish train and draw up their own safe practices when working with children. She was also instrumental in compiling the ‘Diocese of Kerry Safeguarding Children: Standards and Guidance Document for the Catholic Church’, which was sent out to 53 parishes in Kerry. Tralee man Fred Garvey, a retired Chief Superintendent of An Garda Siochana, who worked alongside mother-of-six Bridie, also received the very special accolade. Both Bridie and Fred were shocked when presented with the medal by Bishop Ray Browne at a recent dinner. “We were stunned,” Bridie told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “It was such a surprise. There was a dinner planned

for the two of us to acknowledge our work with the diocesan committee. Then the Bishop starting talking about safeguarding practices, our work, and then he took two boxes out, put them on the table, stood up and presented us with the medals. I am thrilled.” And she added that she’d like to thank former Bishop Bill Murphy, Canon Declan O’Connor, Mons. Dan O’Ri-
ordan and Fr George Hayes who were a great support during the initial stages of implementing the safeguarding policies. “It’s imperative that there’s a strong vibrant safeguarding committee in each parish and that the priests and parish representatives are totally committed to it. The safeguarding has made a huge difference.”
Local SVdP to help over 500 families this Christmas
Kind-hearted St Vincent de Paul volunteers are this week working flat out every day preparing over 500 food hampers in time for Christmas - to those in need in South Kerry - including 300 in the Killarney area alone. Food, fuel, toys and clothes are high on the priority list for most, and those affected include all ages from families to older people, as well as single people living alone. According to the newly released data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) this week, nearly 16 percent of households in Ireland were at risk of poverty in 2017. This week, Bridget O’Shea, SVdP President of the Killarney area which includes two conferences in Killarney town, Firies, Rathmore, Boherbue, Millstreet, Kenmare and Castletownbere, said the charity is inundated with calls for help - especially at this time of the year. Over the last few weeks Bridget and her team of dedicated volunteers have been putting together food hampers mainly made up of non-perishable items, wrapping toys for babies and young children, gathering together new items of clothing also for the children, organising vouchers for those aged 10 to teens, and donating food vouchers to families which will allow them buy fresh food days before Christmas. “All the conferences have been working flat out,” Bridget told the Killarney Advertiser. “They are inundated with calls for food, fuel and toys. Heating is a huge issue and calls for fuel are way up.” She added that there’s a poverty out there that people aren’t seeing.
Volunteers with St Vincent de Paul are this week busy putting together and delivering food hampers for over 500 families and individuals in the Killarney/South Kerry areas in time for Christmas Day. Pictured were: Bridget O’Shea (President of SVdP Killarney Area), Patricia Lyne ((Secretary of the Killarney Area), Breda Dwyer (President of St Bridget’s Conference), Dymphna Horgan (SVdP Member) and Mary Healy (Treasurer).
“Our thing is to put food on the table. There is an absolute increase in calls this time of year from struggling families, single and older people living alone feeling lonely and isolated, and those of different nationalities. “There’s a lot of middle class people that are too proud to ask but that’s changing a little bit.” She said that the charity has received huge support
from local businesses, schools and individual people over the last few weeks. “We want to thank all our fundraisers. We’d a lot of companies in town who donated boxes of food, hotels did giving trees and schools donated toys. We wouldn’t be able to manage without the generosity of the benefactors.”

Busy year for mountain rescue volunteers BY MICHELLE CREAN With seven mountain fatalities, 44 callouts resulting in 67 people assisted, and a total of 2400 rescue hours – it’s certainly been a busy year for the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team. And this week the voluntary organisation, which currently has 35 voluntary members, is appealing to the public to think safety when heading out to the mountains over the Christmas period. During 2018, callouts have ranged from search and rescue to medical assistance and recovery operations in and around the mountain ranges of the southwest, Colm Burke PRO Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, explained. “The team has unfortunately had to deal with an unusually high number of tragic incidents this year, with seven fatalities recorded since February,” he said. During the year, the team, who were honoured to be a joint recipient of the prestigious Hugh O’Flaherty Humanitarian Award, have put in 2000 training hours, he added. “Team training sessions during the year have focussed on the traditional aspects of casualty care and search and rescue in upland areas, along with the introduction of some new technical

equipment to improve rope safety systems.” And he had a safety message for anyone thinking of heading out climbing in the next few weeks. “With the short winter days, cold weather and dark skies, it’s more important than ever to plan ahead to ensure you stay safe out there. As the winter sets in, there are a few key safety considerations for those heading into the mountains. “Make sure you start your walk or climb
early enough in the day; be aware of what time it gets dark and allow for a change in the weather too. Plan your day and route taking into consideration a reliable mountain weather forecast. Leave a route plan with a responsible person. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the weather during the day. Always be prepared to turn back or take a shorter route. The mountains will still be there another day. Whatever your plans, you’ll need a good torch and spare batteries in case you get delayed. Peo-
ple sometimes prefer to carry a second lightweight torch so they don’t need to change batteries in the cold or the dark if the head torch packs up. If you need help, he added, dial 999 or 112, then ask for ‘Mountain Rescue’. “Give all your prepared details of the incident and stay where you are until contacted by the rescue team.” He added, at their recent annual Christmas gathering, a special presentation was made to those team members with in excess of 25 years’ service. Among those individually honoured were Maureen Chevens and Maureen O’Reilly, affectionately known as ‘The Two Maureens’. “The Maureens were an integral part of the team for many years, assisting with the co-ordination of rescue operations and painstakingly recording all rescue events, timelines and communications. And he said that KMRT would like to extend a sincere thanks to all those who have donated funds to the team over the year. “The team relies heavily on donations to meet our annual running costs and we very much appreciate the effort that donors and fundraisers make in this regard.”

TOWNTALK Killarney film could draw in world’s best filmmakers BY ADAM MOYNIHAN
Acclaimed Killarney film ‘Tradition’ will be shown at a major US film festival in the New Year - and director Damian O’Callaghan is hopeful it will draw some of the world’s best filmmakers to the town. ‘Tradition’, which was filmed entirely in the Killarney area, has been selected for the prestigious Chicago Irish Film Festival in February. And O’Callaghan says his hometown is a “dream” for any filmmaker. “It’s a big positive for the town,” he told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “People from the film world are going to see Killarney at this festival and they might say, ‘Maybe we can bring another film here?’. Hopefully it’ll impact on tourism and help bring more visitors over as well.” He added that Killarney town has all the resources and the infrastructure to facilitate the making of any movie, especially with the scenery and the hotels here. “The politicians, the council, the gardaí, the fire brigade. Everyone is so helpful. The people of Killarney are one of a kind. We have a town that no one else has.” O’Callaghan added that he was delighted ‘Tradition’ had been chosen for such a big festival and he was also full of praise for the people of Killarney who helped with OC Production’s second feature-length film. “The quality of the film is what got us there, and that’s a testament to all the teamwork that went into the project,” he said. “It’s not just an OC Productions film – I will stress that – this is very much a Killarney film because if it wasn’t

for the people of Killarney, we wouldn’t have had a film. That goes for all the hotels, all the politicians, and all the people who put the shoulder to the wheel and kept it going forward. The Chicago Irish Film Festival specialises in US
premieres and films that go on to screen in Sundance, Tribeca and Toronto Film Festivals. Previous films shown at the festival include ‘Calvary’ starring Brendan Gleeson, Ger Barrett’s ‘Glassland’ and Oscar-nominated film ‘The Breadwinner’.
Rena creates Killarney’s 45th Christmas crib For 45 years one Killarney woman has been the inspiration behind a much-loved popular local attraction – St Mary’s Cathedral Christmas crib. Local children and adults alike are intrigued by the now local annual tradition -and they have one woman in particular to thank – Rena Kennelly. And this week, Rena told the Killarney Advertiser the remarkable history of the town’s favourite nativity scene. “I remember Fr O’Keeffe was below in 1974 and I asked him if he had a crib,” Rena said. “He said, ‘Oh, we have of course’ - but all they had was an altar with tiny little archways, and they had a donkey and Mary and Joseph with a red light in front. So, I said I’d make one. “I made the figures out of plaster and they were there for a good few years. Then Fr Gearóid Walsh came and he said he’d buy proper figures for it.” The crib quickly grew to become a popular local attraction and although it has changed over the years, one part of the original set-up still remains in place. “Johnny Coffey found a fawn that was killed on the Kenmare Road and he took him to the OPW to find out if he could get it stuffed,” Rena explained. “They said he could, and he gave it to me for the first crib I did 45 years ago. The family have given me that little fawn every year since and it’s still in the crib today.”
Bishop of Kerry Dr Ray Browne blessing the traditional crib at St Mary’s Cathedral Killarney.
Rena says that people still enjoy the crib - but she also expressed fears that the tradition may not continue for much longer. “I think people like it because it’s the only bit of religion left, but the way things are going I’d say there will be no more cribs in a few years. No one will want to do it.
These days it’s all Santa and elves and what have you. But the kids who are in the little pageant, they always remember it. It’s nice for them. “I’m doing it 45 years and I have great help; Martin Walsh and his men do all the heavy lifting. I love doing it, but it’s all for the kids really.”

Business Of The Week Slimmers lose 6096 pounds since September!
Call Sorcha on 086 8423317 for more information
Since September super slimmers in Killarney have lost a whopping 6096 pounds in weight -the equivalent of 3 tonnes or the weight of three large cars! All together the members of the Tuesday and Thursday Slimming World groups are now 435 stone lighter than they were three months ago. The members, who attend the groups every week, follow Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan created by the organisation’s team of expert nutritionists, which encourages them to fill up on satisfying foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, pulses and fruit and veg. Consultant Sorcha Domican has herself lost five stone and dropped from a size 16 to a size 10. “Filling up on lots of satisfying foods means you’re never hungry so I’ve never felt as though I was on a diet,” Sorcha said. “Before I joined Slimming World I thought losing weight meant going to the gym and counting calories. But now I know it’s about making healthier food choices and becoming a bit more active. “Reaching this milestone as a group just proves the huge change that we’ve all made to our lives. Some people who’ve lost big amounts of weight have probably even saved their lives. It’s brilliant to celebrate together as well because that’s how we’ve been losing weight – together. Every week we support and encourage each other and share tips and
so beautifully. It has made a big difference to their lives and to their whole families’ lives, and all of them are happier and healthier now. Slimming has never been more important. There are 77 percent of people overweight and obese in Kerry, and I just want to help even more people to make real changes for life – there’s no better job satisfaction than that!” Sorcha is also opening a new Slimming World group in Kenmare on January 2, and says she can’t wait to help even more people achieve their weight loss dreams!
Group times are:
Tuesdays: The Brehon at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5.30pm and 7.30pm recipes, and on top of that we have a lot of fun. She said that she’s so proud of all her members, but their success is all down to commitment they show every week to their group. “The support and inspiration we get from the group is amazing and has also been integral to our success. I adore being a Slimming World consultant and because I’ve lost weight myself, I really understand the ups and downs of slimming and I can offer help and advice based on my own experience. “I’m delighted that my members have lost weight

Whether you feel like showing off a few Michael Phelps-inspired moves on Muckross Lake or simply fancy dipping a toe in the water, plans are already in place for the 10th annual Christmas Day Dip at Dundag. Killarney mum Niki McCarthy first organised the event in 2009 and since then it has raised over €50,000 for depression support charity Aware. There will be a fancy dress theme this year and mince pies and hot dogs will help refuel you whether you’ve been demonstrating your best doggy paddle or Olympic butterfly. “This year’s dip, which starts at 11am on December 25, will be extra special,” Niki, who is inviting everyone to dive in and show their support, said. The Tiernaboul woman, together with her husband Dave and their children Mischa and Oscar, can be found on the lakeshore every December 25 and all ages are welcome to join them to make a splash this Christmas Day. Niki organises the event in memory of her sister Sylvan Money, who took her own life in 2004, aged just 26. “I wanted to do something that celebrated Sylvan’s life and at the same time try to help others who may be suffering,” she said. “I would like to thank lifeguards Conor and Derek O’Leary and the Order of Malta who have provided the ambulance and first aid volunteers every year.” Contact Niki now to get a sponsorship pack by calling 086 1608673, email nikimcmoney@gmail.com, or see the Killarney Christmas Day Dip Facebook Page.

Thousands of ‘love boxes’ sent abroad to vulnerable children for Christmas
This week, volunteers with Team Hope Killarney issued their heart-felt thanks as an amazing 4,100 boxes were sent to vulnerable children abroad this year in time for Christmas. Margaret Scully, lead coordinator for Team Hope in the Killarney area, told Killarney Advertiser this week that it was only possible thanks to public support. “Congratulations and thank you to everybody that helped make this our best year ever,” Margaret said. “We sent 4,100 beautiful ‘love boxes’ to Lesotho in South Africa. 641 cartons were packed into containers by the Killarney Lions Club with the help of Michael O’Shea (O’Shea Tyres) who turns up every year with a forklift to help make the work a bit easier. Not forgetting our own guys, the master packers Michael Robson, Dave O’Connor and Chris Scully. “We wish to say a massive thank you to every man, woman and child in South Kerry for all the amazing shoeboxes they filled with wonderful things for vul-
nerable children overseas.” And she added that this work would not be possible without the help of all the schools, companies, businesses and the public that took part. “We are so grateful to the teachers and parents that organised and dropped boxes to our checking centre. “None of this work would be possible if we didn’t have a place to check the boxes and get them ready for shipment. We are extremely grateful to the O’Brien family for their generosity in providing the perfect space for the work to get done.” She added a special thanks to the following drop off points, Killarney Advertiser, the two Dealz stores, Joe O’Shea Toymaster in Killorglin, Cahersiveen Credit Union and the Family Resource Centre in Cahersiveen. “The ladies from Killarney Strutters and KOTE who turn up every year to check the boxes, thank you all for your help.”
Local photographer wins Ireland AM photo competition BY MICHELLE CREAN Our very own Dylan has won first prize live on TV yesterday morning (Thursday) for his stunning and creative Christmas portrait. Up and coming photographer Dylan Clifford (24), from Arbutus Grove, had entered the Ireland AM Camera Club photography competition and yesterday won a Canon camera. Just after 10am live on air, presenter Mark Cagney and judge and professional photographer Jenny McCarthy, named Dylan, who was up against two others, as the winner. Dylan, who takes many of the Killarney Advertiser’s photos, had entered once before in Christmas 2016 but came runner up. Jenny said that Dylan’s work stood out and complimented his photo, describing it as ‘well-lit and well composed’. “I found out Tuesday morning that I was a finalist,” Dylan told the Killarney Advertiser. “It felt pretty good as I didn’t expect to win.”
He added that he’d like to thank his mom Ann Marie for encouraging him to enter the competition. And kind-hearted Dylan now plans to give his prize to his little sister Mia (6) as she has also caught the photography bug. “I’m going to give the camera to my sister for Christmas as she is getting into photography. She’ll make more use of it than me – I have my own cameras.”

Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney,Kerry and beyond
The Brits voted to leave and they should just get on with it Perhaps it’s the season, but watching Teresa May bounce around Europe last week, she reminded me of a package that went astray because it was missing a line of the address. And then this pass the parcel got royally stuck when the car door wouldn’t open in Berlin - of all places - in front of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, of all people. What was that about a little war, sorry two little in the past 100 years? Oh dear, oh dear. To be honest, and not too recently, I have wondered who really did win those wars. I am not at all convinced it was the people who lost the battles. There is something deeply demeaning and embarrassing about all this begging and running around by Queen May. The Brits voted to leave and they should just get on with it and appoint a leader, say like Boris Johnson, who has the bluff to pull it off. The deep irony is of course that the Brits voted to leave because in their view the European Union had gone way beyond
a trading block - and now they are stuck because of trade agreements. And they need trade agreements if they are not to go belly up entirely on their march to freedom. It’s more about the halfcrown than the crown, after all! They couldn’t give a rats about “the
Irish border” (to be honest, I couldn’t either). In any case the border issue is not insurmountable. It is of course a bargaining chip. Back stop or front stop, it really matters very little in the greater scheme of things. And with the way things turned out in Roscommon this
week, I’d say we, in this part of Ireland, need more not less security checks in that part of the world. While I have been flattened by Teresa May’s resilience and over awed by her stamina, it strikes me you can have too much stamina. She has been racing like Kitty the Hare missing out only on Leo - and if we can go by the leaks of how much she dislikes the Irish PM, she was probably damned glad to get out of that one. By the way, Teresa is not the only one it seems. The shine is going off our Leo. This column last week was written in advance of the opinion poll which shows him slipping among the public too. But the English PM really should know when to stop: It is one thing to go hammering a pot to make it fit into the holder when it is likely to fit. It’s another thing to keep hammering for the sake of keeping going and the pot is broken. I think it is time she took a rest and I wish her a happy Christmas.
Traditional politics is a man’s game The dearth of candidates in local and indeed in national politics locally should really be a cause for concern, or at least for debate. I was thinking of politics this week in the light of all the brouhaha over the so-called 100 year celebration of women getting the vote. Of course it is only half the story. Women in 1918 did not get the vote, but some women did - those with property, education, and money, and women aged over 30. It was a bit like the senate - you have to be rich by and large. In fact you have to be fairly well off and secure to be involved in politics at any level. That is why perhaps teachers are over represented in politics. It’s a bit like juries - you’ll find very few self-employed people. And just how representative juries are anymore is one for another day. I was looking too at the ‘local only rules’ for planning permission in the countryside whereby people, even those from the next townland, are being refused planning on the grounds they have no relatives in the area or are not working on the spot. That rule is about to go by the way, but watch this space. Rather than a loosening up of planning it will mean a restriction because there will be no more favouritism on protected landscape areas. It will be blanket refusals all around to align us with an EU ruling on the Flemish region in Belgium. There, even house buying was restricted to Flemish speakers, but the European Court of Justice in 2013 threw out the restriction. Of course, our one on blood lines should
never have been even entertained given the Blasket Island fiasco of the 1990s. Didn’t the Supreme Court strike down the Blasket Island Act supported by the late Charles J Haughey which would have allowed property to be held only by islanders descendants? But the truth is, very few people want to take part in politics anymore - especially women. We have had Anne McEllistrim withdrawing her name from the convention in Tralee. Anne was a great councillor and very able and I was sorry to see her not go forward. Sitting councillor Aoife Thornton won’t go forward to contest a Dáil seat and Fine Gael are scrounging around
now to see would they get a second General Election candidate anywhere! Fianna Fail are in the same boat locally. They have only one local election candidate in Tralee and only one in Killarney. And while there has been much beating of the brow, not to say the breast about the few women now in politics 100 years after getting the vote, I am coming to the view, that locally or nationally women and indeed men may have gone beyond politics. I have asked a few women would they be interested in going forward for local or national elections? And no they would not! It is not being in the public eye or embroiled in controversy that worries them. It simply takes too long to get anything done via politics and there are other more effective ways now, they told me. There are women’s organisations, community groups, Facebook campaigns, journalism and writing, partnership and development organisations. I am left with the idea that traditional politics is a man’s game, a talking shop, a performing ring - I am not at all sure it is for women. In fact, I think given the yellow vest movement in France and the failure of politics in Brexit, we may well have gone beyond politics. 2019 will tell much. In fact, it is a bit like Santa Claus. He has the time to dress up and sit back in the sleigh, because the women and the elves do the work including the hauling and lifting, and he gets all the good press! So on that note, happy Christmas Mrs Santa Claus, all Santa’s reindeer, and not forgetting the elves on the shelves either!

New ‘Buddy Bench’ to encourage playground inclusion One local school unveiled an innovative and colourful addition to their school this week – a ‘Buddy Bench’ to promote inclusion and deter playground bullying. Tiernaboul National School, who recently signed up to become a ‘Health Promoting School’ (HPS), launched the new child friendly bench which was kindly constructed and donated by members of Barraduff Men’s Shed. “We had heard that other schools around the country had successfully introduced the concept of a buddy bench,” Fiona Cronin, HPS co-ordinator, said. “The idea is that if a child in the playground feels lonely, sad or isolated and they have no one to play with, they can go and sit on the ‘Buddy Bench’ and then other children will come over and ask them to join in games or just sit and talk. “We thought it was a great idea; to encourage friendships and inclusion, develop empathy and social skills and prevent bullying by teaching the values of kindness and respect.” She added that being a small school with a small budget, they are always trying to keep costs down. “We had read that Men’s Shed groups had occasionally made ‘Buddy Benches’ for their local schools. “During the summer at a health event, one of the parents, Lynn Swinburne, who is on the HPS committee, met Pat O’Mahony, founder of the Barradubh Men’s Shed, and she asked if they could make a bench for Tiernaboul School.” Pat kindly agreed to help the school, even though the Barradubh Men’s Shed is only in its infancy. The bench was then skilfully crafted by Ted O’Leary, a member of the Barradubh Men’s Shed. It was painted in bright colours by parent John Sheahan, and the school community is incredibly grateful for the time and effort given by everyone to this project, she added. “The ‘Buddy Bench’ will be used for years to come. It will give children the subtle message that reaching out for help is often a healthy strategy to deal with problems. “Work will be done on mental health projects in the classroom and children will be encouraged to talk and share their worries, instead of bottling things up; an important lesson to learn for future years.”

Reeks District secures tourism grant to produce regional promotional map The Reeks District has secured match funding for a promotional map of the area to hand out to visitors. Funding was received from South Kerry Development Partnership CLG under the current RDP Leader 2014-2020 Programme (Rural Development Programme). The A2-sized map, which will fold down to a handy pamphlet size, will feature information on things to do in the region, from summiting Carrauntoohil to surfing on Inch Beach. It will be available to pick up for free at the Reeks District Visitor Centre in Killorglin and at various activity providers, restaurants, pubs and accommo-
dation options around the region from March next year. The Reeks District is the new travel brand of the Mid Kerry Tourism Cluster, a not-for-profit membership organisation representing local businesses with an interest in tourism. Bronze, Silver and Gold level memberships are available for businesses – and those in the latter category will also receive a free listing on the map as part of their package. The map is the latest in a long line of promotional efforts by the Reeks District since its re-branding from Mid Kerry in early 2018.

Tricel presents €2,000 cheque to Pieta House Tricel, a family owned global company based in Killarney, was this week delighted to present a cheque for €2,000 raised in support of Pieta House. Pieta House was chosen as a beneficiary for the company’s 2018 charity drives as the organisation’s goals closely align with initiatives undertaken within the company. Tricel regularly holds events, hosts speakers and provides resources to promote staff awareness and create an accessible and positive workplace. Fundraising took place throughout the year with staff participating in multiple fundraisers. Activities included the Darkness into Light walk in May, a staff Wellness Week in July, staff cake sales as well as t-shirt sales, donation buckets and additional donations from the company’s sports and social club. Tricel CEO, Mike Stack, presented the cheque to Pieta House representative Con O’Connor on Friday afternoon. “We undertake multiple fundraising projects throughout each year,” Mike Stack said. “Pieta House is a benefactor this year as the organisation provides such undeniable vital services throughout Ireland.” The Irish company was formed in Killarney in 1973 and has continued to enjoy ongoing expansion. Killarney Scorchers finally receive long awaited award It was a long time coming and patience, they say, is a virtue. If this be so then Killarney Scorchers score high among the virtuous for this week they finally took proud possession of their second place banner from the Summit International Cheerleading Championship in Florida 2018. Killarney Scorchers competed in Florida in May this year but due to a judging error were deprived of their second position and placed fourth. The judges were immediately alerted to the error but were unable to rectify it on the day. Since then, Hayley and Danny Farkas Murphy, owners and coaches of Killarney Scorchers, have been in communication with Varsity, the competition organisers, and a mountain of red tape later, the second place banner has finally arrived. Unfortunately, the team, parents and supporters were deprived of the golden winning moment on the American stage but in great Irish style, celebrated their success at the Brehon Hotel on Sunday at their tenth anniversary and awards party. The banner was a surprise presentation to the hard working team at the function, and tears flowed freely. The team’s win was eloquently summed up by elated coach Danny. “They are not only champions,” he said. “They are world champions – second in the world.”

Talent
Youngsters show their talent at Scór County Finals Four hours of top class entertainment was provided by children from around the District Boards at last Saturday’s County Finals of Scór na nÓg. Held at the Racecourse Killarney, those in attendance enjoyed the very best in music, song, dance and act. Also on the day they celebrated the Golden Anniversary of Scór in the county, which was established by the GAA in 1969, by the late Derry Gowan of Fermoy, Cork. The programme got underway with figure dancing and from there to the final discipline of the evening, set dancing. “The audience was enthralled by the standard set by these very talented youngsters and without doubt Fear A Tí David Ray added to the day’s enjoyment keeping everything running smoothly and efficiently during the huge programme of events,” Jack Hennessy, PRO of Coiste Scór Chiarrai, said. “There was a great spread of winners with success going to no fewer than five District Boards; once again Spa continued to dominate dancing at this level, winning at both figure and set dancing, and to add to East Kerry’s success, Glenflesk took first place in
the ballad group. Na Gaeil - Tralee St Brendan’s were victorious in the Leiriu. Both Finuge and Sneem, after a long absence from this competition, captured the instrumental music and solo singing respectively, and in the recitation discipline Gearoid Evans, Keel took the top spot. The ‘Overall Club’ went to the Spa Club.” The chairman presented the victorious clubs with their County Final medals amid great scenes of jubilation as each individual came to the stage, Jack added. The following are the County Final winners who will now go forward to represent their county at the Munster Finals in Cappoquinn, Waterford, on Sunday, January 20.

Library
Cllr Gleeson calls for refurbishment of Killarney Library At the recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Michael Gleeson asked that Killarney Municipal District call on Kerry County Council to commence the creative process that will in time lead to the redevelopment of a public library in Killarney Town that will be appropriate for 21st Century use, be a hub for educational, recreational, artistic pursuit and enhance the image of a town committed to beauty. Kerry County Council replied that Killarney Library refurbishment is on the Capital Programme 2019-2021, subject to funding. An update on progress on the enhancement of the library will be included in the Directorate Report at future Killarney MD meetings. Councillor Gleeson acknowledged the improvements to the interior and exterior of the library since 2013 and welcomed the commitment to continue this work. He said that it is imperative that there is ready and safe access to all parts of the library and asked also that any problem with internal dampness would be addressed as soon as possible. He complimented the library staff for the wonderful service that they provide to be public.

‘80s Disco
Fundraising disco planned for Kerry Cork Health Link Bus Killarney DJ Niall “Botty” O’Callaghan will be spinning some of the ‘80s greatest hits at a fundraising disco next month. Dig out those shoulder pads and leg warmers and get set to hit the dancefloor as Botty will have everyone dancing for the night with the ‘Back to the 80’s’ disco in aid of Kerry Cork Health Link Bus at The Rose Hotel, Tralee, on Friday January 25. The Lee Suite at the hotel will be transformed for one night only from 10pm until late with a curry supper served to guests to keep the nostalgia going. 1980s dress is encouraged although not required - but there will be a prize for Best Dressed! All proceeds from the night will go to the very worthy Kerry Cork Health Link Bus and the Kerry Cancer Support Group. Kerry Cancer Support Group is a community-based, volunteer-driven, community-supported organisation. Their signature service the “Kerry Cork Health Link Bus” came to fruition in 2010 and started with a 14 seater minibus and as demand quickly grew so did the bus. They now have a 30 seater bus which travels to Cork University Hospital, The Mercy, The Bons Cork and The Cork Clinic five days a week. The service is a vital one and has been likened, by users, to a ‘travelling support group’. They also have a ‘Bridging Transport Service’ which provides transport to treatment for service users on a one-off basis where no other service meets their needs. Tickets are €20 per person or make a night of it and enjoy an overnight stay for €70pps including breakfast and tickets to the disco. Tickets are available from reception@therosehotel.com or call The Rose Hotel at 066 7199100 for more information.

Apprentices from John Sisk & Son plan to deliver handmade toys to children in University Hospital Kerry this Christmas.
John Sisk & Son (“Sisk”), Ireland’s leading construction business, is delivering some 500 handcrafted wooden toys to children’s hospitals and charities in Ireland and across the United Kingdom in the lead up to Christmas. The beautiful wooden toys, which were handmade over the past month by apprentice carpenters and joiners at the company’s workshop on the Naas Road in Dublin, will be delivered to children in University Hospital Kerry. “The Sisk Christmas Toy Story is a longstanding tradition that has gone from strength to strength over the past 40 years,” Steve Bowcott, Chief Executive Officer, John Sisk & Son, said. “The toys are hand made by our apprentice carpenters and joiners, utilising the skills taught to them at our training centre in Dublin. The toys are donated to deserving causes all around Ireland and the UK. This is our way of giving something back to the communities that have supported us throughout the year, and something we as a business look forward to every Christmas.” The John Sisk & Son Christmas Toy Project was started by John G Sisk at the Sisk Joinery Workshop over 40 years ago. Today, Sisk has a state of the art training facility for apprentice carpenters and joiners located at its head office in Dublin. Dave Tracey, Sisk Training Centre Manager added that their talented apprentices who built these toys are the future of the construction industry. “It’s clear to see the satisfaction they get from being involved in such a positive project,” he said. “At the end of their training, these apprentices will have a skill set that will last a lifetime and enable them to work anywhere. It is incumbent on leaders and employers in all industries, as well as Government and educational bodies, to promote the excellent careers that can pursued in carpentry and joinery works.” Work on the toys commenced in mid-November and takes four to five weeks to complete, with all staff and management in the training centre getting involved. Each November, the team assemble to decide on the toys they are going to make, sourcing ideas from toy books, websites and feedback from the charities who have received toys in the past. When the work is complete, the apprentices involved, some dressed as Santa, will load the toys into vans and deliver them to the various locations around the country.

Kerry pupil’s art shows disability is not an obstacle
A talented young South Kerry pupil is celebrating after being named a Senior County Winner of the ‘Someone Like Me’ competition. Sixth class pupil Fintan O’Sullivan, from Aghatubrid NS in Cahersiveen, was one of almost 2,400 competition entries nationally. Using colouring pencils for his drawing, he created a striking piece depicting a scene from a football game where two agile, strong young men are playing. Both characters use crutches, however the artwork demonstrates that this does not impede their ability to exercise and play sport. Their positive attitude acts as inspiration for all to achieve their goals regardless of ability. The competition, which is supported by the National Disability Authority, aims to promote disability awareness and nurture understanding amongst primary school students and to highlight the similarities that exist within people of all abilities. The judges, Caomhán Mac Con Iomaire, Mark Maguire and Ellen Keane, were greatly impressed with his artistic efforts which was selected for being exceptionally insightful and inspirational. Minister of State with special responsibility for Disabilities, Finian McGrath TD congratulated all the winners including Fintan’s, saying that he was hugely encouraged by the number of competition entries. “I am delighted to say that this year we received almost 2,400 entries for this wonderful competition, which highlights the passion and continued enthusiasm that teachers and pupils alike have toward this inFintan O’Sullivan, Aghatubrid NS, pictured with Helen Guinan from the National Disability Authoritiative,” he said. ity, has been named as Senior County Winner of the ‘Someone Like Me’ competition.

Kerry County Council, in association with key stakeholders, has launched a survey of the skills of people in Kerry which will assist in targeting investment and employment for the county. The online survey is being targeted at everyone living in Kerry, as well as those thinking about relocating to the county, those planning to set up a business in Kerry, and graduates planning to work in the county. “Kerry County Council works closely with enterprise development agencies including Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland in attracting business and investment to the county and growing our employment base,” Bridget Fitzgerald, Economic Development Officer at Kerry County Council, said. “In working with other agencies and our own Local Enterprise Office to achieve greater employment locally, it is essential that we are equipped with the necessary information about our skills base and strengths of our existing and potential workforce. “Our people and the skills they possess are our greatest asset and it is important that we know what our skills base is and what skills are needed to enhance our attractiveness as a place to work and to do business. The information gathered from this survey will strengthen our capacity to generate investment and economic development in Kerry. I encourage people to participate in this short and simple survey.” The link to the survey is available at www.kerrycoco.ie.
News Briefs ... Renew firearm certificates to avoid confiscation
An Garda Síochána in Killarney and South Kerry are appealing to licensed firearm holders to renew their firearm certificates in a timely manner. In addition, firearm holders are advised to pay the renewal fee promptly upon receipt of their grant letters. “There are strict controls in place in relation to the licensing of firearms and this is in the interest of public safety,” Superintendent Flor Murphy, Killarney District, said. “I would ask that all firearm holders comply with their obligations under the Firearm Acts as breaches can lead to confiscations of firearms and/or prosecutions.”

Road safety message highlighted by local pupils
Cathaoirleach Cllr Norma Foley and Deputy Chief Executive, Charlie O’Sullivan with the winners of the annual Road Safety Calendar competition hosted by Kerry County Council.
Three Killarney primary school pupils have had their artwork chosen for the 2019 Kerry County Council Road Safety Calendar. Sixth class pupil Ciara O’Donoghue, from Loughguittane NS, has had her art work selected for the month of August while sixth class pupil James Neeson from St Oliver’s NS will represent September, and Áine O’Sullivan, who is in fifth class at Lissivigeen NS, will have her piece of art displayed next December. A total of 400 entries were sent in by primary school pupils from around the county, which is hosted annual by the local authority. Charlie O’Sullivan, Deputy Chief Executive, Kerry
County Council this week presented the twelve winning pupils from various primary schools in Kerry with a copy of the 2019 Road Safety Calendar, featuring their artwork and a ‘Road Safety Pack’ from the Road Safety Authority. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr. Norma Foley presented individual prizes to the winning pupils. Pupils were invited to enter a picture containing a road safety message and the winners were selected for inclusion in the calendar by a judging panel. Cathaoirleach Foley congratulated each of the pupils on their wonderful drawings and said that “the standard of the competition is extremely high, and it is great to know that these pupils, through their
drawings, are contributing to raising awareness of road safety throughout the county”. Co-ordinator of the event, Michelle Mullane, Staff Officer, Operations, Capital Infrastructure and Safety Department, was delighted with all the entries. “We had over 400 entries from schools around Kerry,” she said. “It is fantastic that the teachers and pupils got so strongly involved, and it is my hope that each pupil who took part will have an increased awareness of road safety as a result.” The 2019 Road Safety Calendar will be available to download from Kerry County Council’s website: www.kerrycoco.ie.

Christmas
Great turnout for charity family festive flick Festive feel-good cheer abounded as families flocked to Great Southern Killarney on Sunday for a special screening of Elf. Buddy fans gathered from far and wide to enjoy this ELF-tastic Festive Family Flick event sponsored by Great Southern Killarney with all proceeds going to children’s charity DEBRA Ireland. Prior to the movie junior guests indulged in popcorn, candyfloss, homemade hot chocolate and sweet treats. Adults soaked up the seasonal atmosphere with a glass of homemade mulled wine and relaxed in the Great Room foyer with some light festive entertainment. Christmas jumpers a-plenty were in evidence by hosts, staff and attendees alike, with Christmas carols, DEBRA butterfly tattoos and balloons all adding to the fun of the day, culminating in a visit from the man himself Santa Claus! “What a turnout! We were absolutely delighted with the local support and atmosphere at our first official fundraising event,” event co-host and Hayfield Family Collection (HFC) Sales Director, Karen Fleming said. “I am very appreciative of Mr and Mrs Scally’s sponsorship and as always, I am so proud to work with the team at Great Southern Killarney who invested huge time and effort in ensuring it was magical for all attending.” Also in attendance at the event were Emma Kenneally (Voxpro) and Claire Concannon from DEBRA Ireland, who added it was a fantastic event to bring families together and to raise awareness of and generate much needed funds for DEBRA Ireland.

All funds raised from this event will be donated to DEBRA Ireland which supports 300 people in Ireland living with Epidermolysis Bullosa. This event was held in order to support DEBRA’s Arctic Challenge annual fundraiser. In Spring 2019, Karen Fleming, from the Hayfield
Family Collection of which Great Southern Killarney is a part of, will be undertaking the DEBRA Arctic Challenge along with Emma Kenneally Head of Marketing with Voxpro, in order to raise much needed funds and awareness for families coping with the ‘butterfly’ skin condition Epidermolysis Bullosa.

Party make up from desk to disco Your social calendar from now until the New Year is probably filling up, that means you’re probably legging it from work or Christmas shopping to going out with only a few precious minutes to spare. Fear not though - we’ve got you covered. Here are easy tips to get you from desk to disco.
Embrace fierce eyes
If you’re going to focus on one feature before heading into the night, make it those peepers. First and foremost, you need a palette that’s going to make your eyes look amazing. Artdeco eyeshadow palette blends like a dream and has twelve warm tones that’ll look great on all skin tones. They are also 100 percent cruelty-free, made without harsh ingredients and are super-pigmented. We’re all guilty of cutting corners to get to the exciting stuff when it comes to applying our makeup. That means things like concealer can get overlooked for vampy eyes or bold lips. Apply your concealer after foundation to avoid wiping it away and go for a shade lighter to cheat some sleep. Artdeco Camouflage is fantastic for lasting, and not moving when applied correctly. If you’ve got strong brows, or the illusion of strong brows, you can get away with a multitude of sins. Failing that, you’re at least going to look fierce with minimum effort. If you’re feeling extra crafty make an appointment to get your brows tinted and tamed. Having them done professionally saves loads of time as they take so long to get even if you’re in a hurry. Just before you’re about to leave, brush through those caterpillars and let others do the eyebrow raising at how good you look. Everyone wants to shine, but not their T-Zone! A good compressed powder will help keep the shine away and help your make up last longer. • For more information contact Jill on 064 6632966.

As 2018 draws to close and 2019 dawns, the finish line is in sight for Leaving Cert students. Ensure that the Christmas holidays gives you the chance to recharge, rebalance and review so that you can return to school re-energised and ready to hit the ground running towards those June exams. It has been a long and busy term since the beginning of September and the two and a half week break gives exam students a great opportunity to catch up on some much needed rest and relaxation in the company of friends and family. Take a well-earned break from the books at the beginning of the holidays. Catch up on sleep, watch movies, socialise, shop in the sales and enjoying the Christmas goodies will help to rebalance your sense of wellbeing and fun. This break gives you an ideal opportunity to review how your work is going and to re-examine your exam targets and goals. If you are really struggling with a subject, you may need to consider dropping to a lower level so that you can perform well in your stronger subjects. While a break from study is really important, for Leaving Cert students it is
essential to pencil in some revision over the Christmas holidays. With 16 days off school it is possible to pencil in seven or eight of those for revision and aim to get three or four hours done each of those days. This will set you up very well for the return to school in the lead up to mock exams, which generally begin in schools at the end of January. The CAO deadline on February 1 is on the horizon; therefore the Christmas break gives you the headspace you need to conduct the detailed research you need to do, but won’t have time for after the holidays. Many college students you know are home for the holidays so meeting up with those that are studying areas you are interested in will help the decision-making process. Many students leave the CAO form until the last minute, forgetting that you will be under a lot of pressure in the lead-up to the deadline as the priority at that time is mock exams. Use this couple of weeks to explore the courses that interest you. Phyllis Flynn from Park Drive, Killarney, who has been with Kerry Respite Care since it was established in 2002, officially retired from the service at the annual Christmas party in the Meadowlands Hotel Tralee. On the night, five retirees were presented with flowers and certificates of appreciation for their long service to the charity. Phyllis was one the original employees of Kerry Respite Care not for profit, explained Marie Moloney, Chairperson of Kerry Respite Care, who thanked Phyllis and all of those retiring for their contribution to the organisation, and added she will be sorely missed by her co-workers and clients. Phyllis is really looking forward to her retirement and plans to spend more time with husband Patsy and daughters Tracey and Georgina. Phyllis has four grandchildren, three girls and a boy who will keep her very busy into the future. Phyllis will now have plenty of time to go on holidays to her favourite destinations, Tenerife and Costa del Sol. She is also a lover of fashion, which came from her time in London when she worked in Harrods before she was married. Spirit of Christmas alive in Rathmore World renowned musician Liam O’Connor was on hand to bring the spirit of Christmas to Rathmore last week. A student-led Christmas carol night commenced the Christmas festivities for the second annual ‘Musical Spirit of Sliabh Luachra’ Christmas concert in St Joseph’s Church, Rathmore, last Wednesday night. The concert was shepherded by Rathmore parish priest Father Pat O’Donnell and inspired students of Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra were led by their TY coordinator – the powerhouse Norma Aherne. “This was a unique opportunity, driven by the youth of Rathmore to showcase talent in music, song and dance whilst being suitably aided by their music teacher Margaret Dennehy,” Norma Aherne said. “In its second year running, this show was a very successful night. The event was headlined by the talented Irish musician Liam O’Connor who holds the World Record for the fastest accordion player.” Liam, also known as the “Jimi Hendrix of the accordion”, was accompanied by his son Oísín and daughter Saoirse. “The prodigious family wowed the audience with an array of tunes whilst the spectacle saw plenty of individual local talent exposed on the night as well. “Even though it was a Transition Year organised event, a third of the school students were either involved in singing playing or dancing.”

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Drones ground planes at one of UK’s busiest airports Man reportedly held judge Tens of thousands of passengers have been disrupted over the past few days by drones flying over one of the UK’s busiest airports. Gatwick’s runway was shut on Wednesday night and yesterday (Thursday), as devices repeatedly flew over the airfield. Sussex Police said it was not terror-related but a “deliberate act” of disruption, using “industrial specification” drones. The airport advised that the runway would not open “until it was safe to do so”, sparking fears that the delays could continue into the weekend. Those due to travel have been told to check the status of their flight, while Easyjet told its passengers not to go to Gatwick if
their flights have been cancelled. The shutdown started just after 9pm on Wednesday when two drones were spotted flying “over the perimeter fence and into where the runway operates from”. The runway briefly reopened at 3.01am on Thursday but was closed again about 45 minutes later amid “a further sighting of drones”. Gatwick’s Chief Operating Officer Chris Woodroofe said that police were looking for the operator as “that is the way to disable the drone”. He said police did not want to shoot the devices down because of the risk from stray bullets. It remained unsafe to reopen the airport after a drone had been spotted too close to the runway, he added.
Trump Corner Withdrawing from Syria could have “dangerous implications” US President Donald Trump’s shock decision to withdraw US troops from Syria has been condemned by the Kurdish-led force that has led the ground war against Islamic State. The Syrian Democratic Forces claimed it will spark a revival of the terror group. Washington’s move would have “dangerous implications for international stability,” they said. The US pull-out was announced as Turkey prepared to send its military into Syria to confront Kurdish militias that it says threaten its sovereignty. The US-backed Kurds are drawn from the same Kurdish groups – a point that has caused friction between Ankara and Washington throughout the four-year campaign against Isis.
The SDF and the YPG, a partner Kurdish militia, described the move as a “blatant betrayal”. Other Kurdish leaders said the mooted abandonment would cause damage to Kurdish movements elsewhere in the region. “We have every right to be afraid,” Arin Sheikmos, a Kurdish journalist and commentator, told the Associated Press. “If the Americans pull out and leave us to the Turks or the [Syrian] regime, our destiny will be like the Kurds of Iraqi Kurdistan in 1991. Neither the regime, nor Iran nor Turkey, will accept our presence here.” In contrast, Russian president, Vladimir Putin, whose military intervened in the Syrian war in 2015, turning the tide in favour of the Assad regime, welcomed the US move.

hostage at Family Courts
A man has been arrested after producing what appeared to be an imitation firearm and a suspect device at the Family Courts in Dublin yesterday (Thursday) afternoon. Gardaí remained at the scene in Smithfield yesterday evening and the courts building was evacuated. The surrounding area was also cordoned off and Luas services were disrupted as a result. The Army bomb squad arrived at the scene to deal with the suspicious device produced in the courts. The man was arrested and is currently being detained at Bridewell Garda Station in Dublin. Gardaí re-
sponded to the incident at about 11.30am yesterday morning after reports that a man with a gun was in the court building and was reported to be holding a judge hostage. It is understood that the man had a case before the courts today. The area was immediately declared a crime scene and taped off while gardaí approached and entered the building. They subsequently disarmed and arrested the man in question. They Family Courts typically deal with personal matters, including divorce, child maintenance, custody, children in state care and domestic violence.
Musk unveils high speed underground tunnel in LA Entrepreneur Elon Musk has unveiled a prototype underground tunnel in Los Angeles which is designed to transport cars at high speed around the city. The tunnel is only a mile (1.6km) long at the moment but the goal is a network to ease chronic traffic congestion. Modified electric cars would be lowered into the tunnel and travel at speeds up to 150mph (240km/h), Mr Musk says. The tunnel has been built by Mr Musk’s Boring Company, which boasts state-of-the-art engineering techniques. Musk, best known as the head of Tesla electric cars and the commercial
SpaceX programme, arrived at the launch on Tuesday in a Tesla car modified to work on the “loop” system. He was cheered by a small crowd as he emerged from the car at one end of the tunnel bathed in green and blue interior lights. The plan envisages modified cars being lowered into the tunnel network by lifts and then slotted into tracks on the “loop”. “The profound breakthrough is very simple: it’s the ability to turn a normal car into a passively stable vehicle by adding the deployable tracking wheels, stabilising wheels, so that it can travel at high speed through a small tunnel,” Mr Musk said.

Teens earning thousands per week hacking Fortnite
A new report by the BBC has revealed that hackers as young as 14 are making thousands of pounds a week by hacking the video game ‘Fortnite’. The BBC spoke to around 20 hackers, who revealed that they were stalking the private accounts of players, and selling them online for hundreds of pounds in some cases. “I was approached by a cracking team and they told me what it was and all about ‘combos’, ‘proxies’ and I guess they showed me how to crack,” one of the hackers told
the BBC. He explained that the team showed him how to hack, including where to find the usernames and passwords online, and how to sell these accounts. “It’s lucky dip basically, you either get a good account or you don’t,” he added. “People like the rarity of the ‘skins’ and it’s about the look of them and showing off to friends.” While the game’s developer, Epic Games, said it was working to improve account security.

No white Christmas for Ireland this year
Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? Well, keep dreaming. With just a few short days to Christmas, Met Éireann is forecasting mild weather so those hoping for snow are likely to be left disappointed. Met Éireann say it will stay unsettled over the weekend with Saturday looking to be the best of the two days with just a little rain. On Sunday, longer spells of rain seem likely. Temperatures by day will be between 8 and 12 degrees and
winds will be no more than moderate. It’s likely to stay quite mild and changeable in the run-up to Christmas Day. Meanwhile, bookmakers Paddy Power are offering specials on snow to fall at selected airports around the world, with a price of 25/1 available for Dublin Airport to experience snow next Tuesday. In the UK, Aberdeen Airport is the most likely location to have snow with a price of 3/1.
US Senate passes bill to make Japan to leave IWC and resume lynching a federal crime commercial whale hunting Japan plans to leave the International Whaling Commission (IWC) so it can resume commercial hunting, according media reports. Commercial whaling was banned by the IWC in 1986 after some whales were driven almost to extinction. For many years Japan has hunted whales for what it calls “scientific research” and to sell the meat, a programme widely criticised by conservationists. The Japanese government is expected to cite the recovery of certain whale species as justification for the move, although it’s thought to be considering whaling only in its own waters. Officials in Japan say eating whales is part of its culture. A number of coastal communities in Japan have hunted whales for centuries, but consumption in the country surged only after World War II when whales were the main source of meat. It has plummeted in recent decades. Wildlife protection groups have
already criticised the planned withdrawal. Despite Japanese media widely reporting the decision has been taken, there has been no official announcement yet. In September Tokyo tried to get the IWC to allow commercial catch quotas but the proposal was rejected. In 1986, IWC members agreed to a moratorium on hunting to allow whale stocks to recover. Pro-whaling nations expected the moratorium to be temporary, until consensus could be reached on sustainable catch quotas. Instead, it became a quasi-permanent ban. Whaling nations, such as Japan, Norway and Iceland, however argue the practice is part of their culture and should continue in a sustainable way. Today, whale stocks are carefully monitored, and while many species are still endangered, others - like the minke whale that Japan primarily hunts - are not.
The United States Senate has unanimously approved a bill to make lynching a federal crime in the country. Three black senators introduced the bill in June to allow lynching to be charged as a hate crime alongside existing crimes such as murder. For much of US history, lynchings were rarely prosecuted at all. More than 200 anti-lynching bills have been introduced to Congress since 1918, all of which have been voted down. Lynching is murder by a mob with no due process or rule of law. In the US South in the 19th and 20th Centuries, thousands of African Americans were lynched by white mobs, often by hanging. In a tweet, Senator Kamala Harris - one of
the bill’s architects - said the vote was “history.” The bill was a bipartisan effort. It was first introduced earlier this year by Ms Harris and Cory Booker - both Democrats - and by Republican Senator Tim Scott. According to the text of the bill, at least 4,742 people were reported lynched in the US between 1882 and 1968. It says 99% of all perpetrators had escaped punishment and called lynching “the ultimate expression of racism in the United States”. “Today, we have righted that wrong and taken corrective action that recognizes this stain on our country’s history,” Booker said in a statement following the vote on Wednesday.

The most dangerous Dear Road Sage: A letter Christmas driving songs Wish list
from Santa Claus Dear Editor, Thank you for your letter entitled “Dear Santa: What I want for Christmas.” It’s a busy time of year up here at the North Pole. The elves are working on last-minute gifts, Mrs Claus is baking goodies, and me and my team of reindeer are in training, preparing for my big night. Ho! Ho! Ho! But what a wonderful surprise it was to receive a wish list from a grown man, one obsessed with cars and driving, and who so frequently finds delight in criticising the motoring habits of others. Santa and his realm are usually the purview of innocent children, but by sending me your list, you have proven that even an old, selfish, cynical, greedy, whining, envious scribbler and “comedy professor” can still believe that a portly stranger in a red suit with a white beard will give him free gifts if you simply write and ask for them. It gives me great pleasure to reply. I’ve decided to deal with your wish list in an item-by-item manner. 1. While I can sympathise with your request that I “smite” those who park in bike lanes, it’s important for you to understand that Santa Claus is not a Roman God who exacts fitting and ironic punishment on those he sees as sinning. I deliver gifts. I don’t smite. I would, however, like you to know that if I did have the power to smite, one of the first groups to receive a smiting would be the morons who park in bike lanes, endangering the lives of people whose only crime is lessening pollution while staying fit. 2. Santa always appreciates when good little boys and girls allow him some leeway when delivering gifts. For instance, “I would like a doll” is an easier request
than a “I want a Barbie Christmas Chelsea Doll.” I cannot, however, give you, “any car whose name does not end in the letters ‘van’.” I don’t give cars. If you want a car on Christmas morning, then you have two options: One – get cast in a television commercial as the less-good-looking husband whose better-looking wife gives him a new car with a big red bow on it. Two: give up. 3. I am not able to give you “any car” whose name ends with the letters “aserati” (see item 2). 4. Re: “This Christmas I would like a satellite-guided projectile aimed at people who drive slow in the passing lane.” I’ve got the elves working on this one. On the surface, it seems illegal and a tad extreme, but on second reflection, it holds up. I’ve put a few of those “Elf on the Shelf” guys on it (they’re already angry), and at present, the big issue is matching payload (a warhead) with an aircraft propulsion system contained in an airframe with small enough wings for flight control. Given how slow the lane hogs drive, we won’t need to worry about having the missiles fly at subsonic speed. 5. No, you will not be getting any vehicles whose names end with “MW” or “rcedes” or “udi.” 6. I will give you some advice. You want to experience a little driving pleasure? Go to bed early, get up around 5am, grab a coffee and take your car out. You’ll enjoy relatively clear roads and the sunrise. In this age of congestion and construction, that’s all you can hope for. 7. Finally, want to beat the traffic? Invest in a sleigh. Merry Christmas, Santa Claus
Yes, you read that right. These are the most dangerous Christmas songs for drivers. Best we warn Santa, lest he unwittingly puts on one of these headbangers and winds up recklessly drifting roundabouts in his sleigh. A recent study examined 95 popular Christmas songs based on their tempo in beats per minute (bpm). Who will have us driving dangerously as we’re on our way home for Christmas, then? No, it’s not ‘Driving Home For Christmas’. That’s classed as quite safe, would you believe it, at 34th on the list. Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Underneath the Tree’ is, based on its 160bpm tempo and energy score of 0.8, the most ‘dangerous’ Christmas song to drive to. It would be someone called Clarkson, wouldn’t it? Wizzard’s famous classic ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’ comes in at second. We get that, it’s quite upbeat. You could certainly get into a jig and sing to it when you should be concentrating on the road. Jose Feliciano’s ‘Feliz Navidad’, The Darkness’ ‘Christmas Time’, Elton John’s ‘Step Into Christmas’ and The Wombles’ ‘Wombling Merry Christmas’ (yes, really) follow in third, fourth and fifth. Slade comes sixth, with ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’, followed by Chuck Berry’s ‘Run Rudolph Run’, The Jackson 5’s ‘I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus’ and Mariah Carey’s ‘Christmas’ follow that. As for some of the safest songs to drive to? ‘Santa Baby’ is third, with ‘Silent Night’ in 10th. Music you drive to shouldn’t exceed more than 60-100bpm, so it’s said, which is the average range of a human heartbeat. Studies have shown that listening to music with a bpm higher than 120 can increase your likelihood to speed and drive dangerously.

Mazda pushing Premium
Mazda is set to push its brand and its products upmarket but will not be launching a standalone premium brand anytime soon. The company unveiled its brand-new fourth-generation Mazda3 in the US this week. In doing so, it referred to the concept of ‘Mazda Premium’ as an umbrella for its desire to provide consumers with more refined products and experiences. The company describes Mazda premium as a holistic approach the company is taking towards the development, styling and refinement of future models in an effort to move the brand firmly above other mass-market competitors. Mazda has unveiled a number of highend concepts in recent years, specifically the 2020 RX-VISION and Vision Coupe pictured, but the chances of
these models turning into production realities are still slim. However, global Mazda boss Akira Marumoto appeared to pour water on the potential of new ‘high-cost’ Mazda models. “When we say premium at Mazda, we mean that through products, sales and service we’d like to forge a strong bond with our customers. We want to be that kind of brand,” he said. “Unlike the German three, we do not have the intention to develop very expensive products,” the Mazda Motor Corp CEO stated. “The first step Mazda is going to take is to expand model grades so that products have from entry up to very high grades,” he said.

Create a festive floral arrangement this Christmas Flower arranging is a creative, artistic and rewarding hobby. For gardeners it is also a relatively cheap hobby. If greenery is varied and plentiful, you can create large arrangements with a minimum of flowers. Or, alternatively, silk/artificial flowers can be combined with real greenery to great effect. Some plants to consider growing, if flower arranging is a hobby, are: Choisya Ternata, also known as Mexican orange blossom. Shiny fresh green leaves, in groups of three, with a gorgeous scent. There is a golden version available called ‘Sundance’, but the green variety is a stronger plant. They like semi-shade and grow to about one metre. Helleborus, or ‘Christmas Rose’, a low growing plant which has large dark green three lobed leaves. Pittosporum ‘Silver Queen’, a large shrub with small silvery leaves and dark, almost black, bark. ‘Tom Thumb’ is a dwarf variety with small burgundy leaves. It’s new growth is a bright green which contrasts beautifully with the deep burgundy foliage. Pieris japonica is a great plant for flower arranging. Its leaves grow in whorls with a good space between each group. They cover a lot in an arrangement! These flowers are also excellent for lasting. ‘Forest Flame’ is probably best known for its bright pink new foliage - but there are many varieties to choose from. ‘Christmas Cheer’ flowers at Christmas time and ‘Little Heath’ is a dwarf variety. Viburnum tinus, harryanum and davidii are all great foliage plants. Viburnums,
both evergreen and deciduous are among my favourite plants. They are hardy, trouble free and happy plants, which almost all do well in any kind of soil. Corylus contorta is a deciduous plant but its stems are twisted and grow in fantastic shapes. There are catkins in the spring, to which some people are allergic. Plants such as dogwoods and willows have coloured stems which can be manipulated into shapes, or used as support for weaker stems. Liquidamber and Euonymus Alatus both have cork-like structured bark. Podocarpus alpinus ‘Blue Gem’, ‘Chocolate Box’ and ‘Kilworth Cream’ are all types of a lovely conifer, which has soft needles, beautiful structure and great colour. ‘Blue Gem’ has a blue tinge to dark green needles, the others are a rich brown and soft cream, respectively. Fatsia japonica, also known as Aralia, has large five lobed leaves. ‘Spider’s Web’ has white mottling in the leaves. These are grown as houseplants in many regions, but we are lucky to be able to grow them in a sheltered spot in Kerry. All of the above plants hold well in floral foam at room temperature. They are easy to work with and do well when cut back regularly. Making your own table arrangements at this time is such an enjoyable pastime, especially with children. Use pretty nightlight holders to create individual name card holders, or make small arrangements to use as candle holders. Using old Christmas baubles instead of flowers is just another way to stretch resources!

BECKETT
In loving memory of our brother Mart, who died 6th September 1998. Cluainin, Woodlawn Road For you brother, we promise you this, We will go on with our lives And make you proud, We will always hold you in our hearts.
In loving memory of my husband Martin (Snr) and son Martin. Who died on 30th December 2015 and 6th September 1998. Cluainin, Woodlawn Road, Killarney. ‘My Two Martins’
We promise you, we will be missing you Everyday until the end of time, But this is not our end and we cant hold Our heads underwater….
No more your face to look upon Or your beautiful smile to see Though deep inside my heart I know Ye still reside with me
We need to breath, We need to love and miss you, But we also need to live, Because through us you will live,
When the sun casts down its golden rays Thats when I see both your smiles Then rain drops fall just like my tears And my heart aches for a while
You will still laugh and love, You will still sing and dance, You will still hug and kiss, You will forever be in our lives.
A rainbow in the sky appears With a beauty of its own And on the breeze I hear your voice It whispers you’re not alone.
You will forever be our brother. Love Mags, Kerrie and Mike XXX
Always loved by your wife Eileen and mom XXX

In loving memory of Jeremiah (Jerry) O’Leary, No. 4 Emmett’s Terrace, Lewis Road. Who died on the 26th of December 2017
In loving memory of Jerry O’Leary, Late of 4 Emmets Terrace, Lewis Road, Killarney.
I thought of you with love today, But that is nothing new, I thought about you yesterday, And days before that too.
Mother God looked around his garden, And saw an empty space, He then looked down upon the earth, And saw your tired face.
He never looked for praises, He was never one to boast, He just went on quietly working, For the ones he loved the most.
I think of you in silence, I often speak your name, All I have are memories, And your picture in a frame.
He put his arms around you, And raised you up to rest, His garden must be beautiful, Because he only takes the best.
Your memory is my keepsake, With which I’ll never part, God has you in his keeping, I have you in my heart.
He knew you were in pain, And that a cure was not to be, So he closed your weary eyelids, And whispered “come to me”.
For Noel on his birthday this Christmas.
With tearful eyes we watched you, And saw you slip away, And though we loved you dearly, We knew you could not stay.
DILLON
Birthday Remembrance for Noel Dillon, Woodlawn, Killarney, Whose birthday falls on the 24th of December.

15TH ANNIVERSARY
It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, On the day God called you home. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered always by your family, Tim, Eamonn, Dermie, Neil Brendan and Máiréad.
His dreams were seldom spoken, His wants were very few, And most of the time his worries Went unspoken too. He was there a firm foundation, Through all our storms of life, A sturdy hand to hold on to, In times of stress and strife, A true friend we cold turn to, When times were good or bad, One of our greatest blessings, The man that we called Dad.
1ST ANNIVERSARY O’LEARY
The gates of heaven opened As wide as they could go, God called his angels over And put them in a row, There is a special man arriving So guide him all the way, I’ll be waiting in my garden Because this is where he’ll stay. A million tears will follow Him to his place of rest, I’m sure you have often heard I only take the best. A million tears did follow, And a lot of broken hearts Because losing such a special Dad Tore us all apart.
In loving memory of Martin Griffin, Late of Dalton’s Avenue and Fleming’s Lane Who died on the 26th December 2010. No words we write can ever say, How much we miss you everyday, No one knows the grief we bear, When the family gather And you’re not there, We laugh, we talk, we play the part, But beyond the sorrow is a broken heart, The sorrow we feel, We can never explain, And the ache in our hearts Will always remain. Sadly missed, always loved and Never forgotten by your family At home and abroad.
This morning when we woke up, And saw the sun above, Right away we thought of you, And said a loving prayer, That God would bless you specially, And keep you in his care.
Anniversary Mass is on Saturday 29th Dec at 6.15pm in St.Mary’s Cathedral.
So dearly loved, so sadly missed by your loving wife Bridie, daughter Tracy, son Roland, son-in-law Richard, daughter-inlaw Ana, Grandchildren Jemma, Richard, Orla, Lia, Lola Rose, Kerry, Lola, Marina, Ciara and Alice.

Lakers exact revenge over Celtics with hard-fought win Eamonn Keogh
National League Div 1 Scotts Lakers 97 | Limerick Celtics 91
Killarney Sports Centre
The Scotts Lakers produced a storming final quarter to overcome the Limerick Celtics in an exciting encounter in Killarney Sports Centre last Saturday night. The Celtics travelled to Killarney in confident form having beaten the Lakers there two weeks previously in the cup quarter final and they were also strengthened with the addition of former Limerick footballer John Galvin. Limerick finished the first quarter stronger to lead 31-23 at the end of the first period but the home side hit back in the second quarter with Séamus Brosnan particularly impressive. Limerick were moving well, however, and John Galvin slotted a three-pointer to close out the half and give Limerick a 55-46 lead at the interval. Outstanding play from Seán O’Brien and big scores from Papito Hersisia kept the home side in contention but John Galvin and Turrell Morris were equalV

ly imposing for the visitors and Limerick led 72-67 entering the final quarter. The Lakers stepped it up in the final period and a big three-pointer from Seán O’Brien made it a tied game at 72 points each with 8:30 remaining. Two spectacular reverse lay-ups from Séamus Brosnan and further scores from Hersisia along with incredible assist play from O’Brien helped to give the Lakers a commanding 82-75 lead with six minutes remaining. The Celtics never gave up and managed to reduce the deficit to six points in the end.

Davy is “hopelessly drawn” to proving people wrong Eamonn Fitzgerald The name Davy Fitzgerald is synonymous with great hurling and in later year’s successful management, “but to me , he was one of the greatest goalkeepers to ever play the game”. So states Donal Óg Cusack, another outstanding goalkeeper from Cork. This quote comes from a new book ‘At All Costs’, which is ghosted by wellknown sports journalist Vincent Hogan. He takes us through the ups and downs of a great player who won two All-Ireland hurling titles with his native Clare and in his retirement he went on to manage his native county to All-Ireland glory. It wasn’t all plain sailing as he reveals his battles with ill health; he survived two heart attacks and also bouts of depression. He was also bullied in school and this bothered him, but the hurling saved him. He is a volatile and spirited character and this is very evident in his book which tells it warts and all. “But it is fair to say that I was a coiled spring most of the time,” he readily admits. Little wonder, then, that he was embroiled in several controversies. He got into trouble with referees. “Again maybe I’d have been better advised to say nothing, but my head was stewing.” He defended his players when he was managing teams. “I had zero sympathy for the difficulty of the referee’s job. If I felt my team had been wronged I’d go to war almost in reflex.”
Proving people wrong
“There’s something in my psychological make-up that means I’m hopelessly drawn towards proving people wrong - it is how I am wired.” Successful as he was in goal, sparks invariably flew. He saw no danger between the posts and he saved some miraculous shots. Who can ever forget his forays up field when a penalty was awarded to Clare? And it was often a very successful mission as his piledrivers made the opposition’s nets, raising those match-turning and match-winning green flags. “I adore the trump of the underdog and I can’t think of anything better in sport or in life than somebody defying the odds. I see something of myself in the underdog. If anything I have too much belief in my own ability. It’s something that rubs people up the wrong way. I recognise that.” He loves to see people “step outside their comfort zone and achieving”. That is exactly what he does in his life as a player and as a manager. “I have never been motivated by medals. The human story is what drives me on. Medals are the bonus.” His bravery between the posts for club and county underlies the graphic account of his exploits including the Club Championship semi-final against Crusheen when a forward pulled high and the result for Davy was “looking down at my left hand and I could see part of my fourth finger hanging off. Instinctively I reached down to try to reconnect it”.
Forced out
What is very clear from the book is that as a manager he commanded fierce loyalty and he was a real players’ man, defending and supporting them through all their travails. He was often in controversy with the Clare County Board and even though he delivered an All-Ireland, that was not a recipe for calmness. The day came when he was forced out of the job as manager of Clare. The media gave him a tough time and so did the County Board. What made it more difficult was that his father was secretary of the County Board. The charge of nepotism was on the lips of many and Ger Loughnane, his former playing partner with the Banner, was loud in his criticism of Davy, calling for his resignation as Clare boss. Fr Harry Bohan was very appreciating of what Davy had done both as a player and as a manager with Clare but even that wasn’t enough to save him. Davy says he never took a cent from the Supporters Club. He got dogs’ abuse for using the short puck out game but he soldiered on as he believed it suited the Clare team that he had. His training method was very demanding on his players and he tells of the bonding session which had them sliding down the Devil’s Ladder in Carrantuohill in the dark. Savage stuff. He had the dilemma with Podge Collins who declared that he wanted to play football and hurling with Clare and that did not sit easily with Davy. This was compounded when Colm Collins, Podge’s father, was appointed as manager of the Clare football team shortly after Clare winning the All-Ireland hurling title. More trouble.
Honorary Fellowship
One of the great occasions for Davy was when he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from LIT for his successful work preparing the college team for the Fitzgibbon Cup. Davy Fitzgerald bares his heart and soul to Vincent Hogan who presents this spirited soul to its readers. It is a great read, from his time as a player and later as a manager with Clare, Waterford and his present role as manager of Wexford. Davy’s sentiments on the dust cover tell a lot. “I’m a bad loser. That’s not something I can hide. Most competitive people are. Bad days can come close to poisoning you. There have been occasions when I’ve taken defeat too personally and, maybe, it’s left me looking petty and ungracious. I suppose I’m learning that all the time. But this game, this game of hurling puts life in us that I hope I never lose.” The book is on sale now in Easons Killarney.

Even though it was primarily a seasonal fun event, it was hotly contested and the result indicates that Conor’s preparations for next season are going well. 2017 was a break-through year for Conor: he took top placings in major events, including 2nd in the National Hill Climb Championships and came to prominence in Stage 4 of the Rás Tailteann when he took a host of mountain points on the Moll’s Gap stage. He also won the Kerry championship and league. Lorcan Daly, also of Killarney Cycling Club, was first home in the shorter 50km event at Killorglin. V
