PAGE SIX Wheelchair users say more needs to be done for greater accessibility BY ADAM MOYNIHAN
Although they welcomed the launch of a new strategy aimed at making Killarney a leading accessible tourism destination - a local group says a lot more work still needs to be done. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, two wheelchair users who have both resided in Kerry Cheshire Home on St Margaret’s Road for over 20 years, acknowledged that progress has been made but insisted that the situation in Killarney is far from ideal. “I’m not knocking Killarney or the services here, we’re getting better,” Aileen O’Sullivan, who has been in Killarney for 23 years, said. “But we’ve a very long way to go yet. “I know we live in a tourist town but certain businesses have sandwich boards and furniture taking up half the path. I think certain people take liberties. I see it everywhere. I’m not saying that people aren’t entitled to do it, they are, but they should think of wheelchair users, mothers with buggies and the elderly.” Bernard James said that it is a widespread problem throughout the town. “You would go down every street but you wouldn’t want to be in a hurry,” he said. “If you had to be somewhere at 3.30pm, you’d have to give yourself plenty of time.” When out and about, Aileen often has to take alternative routes to ensure her safety and the safety of pedestrians. “I’m kind of a free spirit so I go out a lot - but coming up Rock Road you’re taking your life into your hands,” she said. “The footpaths are sloped and if you meet a passer-by, they have to go out on the road. I normally go up by St Finan’s and through the hole in the wall down by Fitzgerald Stadium for the simple reason that the footpaths are more accessible.” Both Bernard and Aileen agree that more wheelchair taxis are needed - but the biggest problem, according to Aileen, is the abuse of disabled parking spaces in the town, many taken up by large commercial bins. The misuse of parking permits is also common place and this is a particular bone of contention for wheelchair users, they say.
Wheelchair users Bridget O’Gorman, Aileen O’Sullivan and Bernard James with Séamus O’Sullivan, Mary O’Shea (Secretary of Killarney Access Group) and Breda Dwyer (Chairperson).
“We have a very good ticket inspector now,” Aileen said. “She doesn’t take any crap. But more needs to be done.” Killarney is hoping to position itself as the leading accessible tourism destination in Ireland but Bernard expressed concerns that certain establishments are merely ticking boxes. “Nine out of ten hotels say that they’re wheelchair accessible and they are wheelchair accessible – up to a point,” he said. “It depends on the size of the wheelchair. There are quite a few places in town that I can’t go into with this
wheelchair. I’d be shifting the whole place to get from A to B, and I know damn well that I’d be entitled to do it, but by the time you’d get there it’d be time to go back the other way again. “It’s the same with wheelchair bathrooms. They are, by law, doing it right and they’re covering themselves, but they’re not catering to all sizes of wheelchairs.” Praising the work of the Killarney Access Group and the IWA, Aileen was optimistic that one day Killarney would be truly accessible for all its citizens. “It’s a case of three steps forward and two steps back. But we’ll get there eventually.”

Kerry woman lends voice to Alzheimer campaign BY MICHELLE CREAN
Jane O’Sullivan, from Ballyfinnane, who is caring for her husband Donie, says the Government needs to do more for Alzheimers patients in Kerry.
in conjunction with the HSE. This week, Jane, who worked in Killarney for many years, told the Killarney Advertiser that there are over 4,000 carers in Kerry and not only are they being forgotten about - but also feel isolated caring for loved ones at home alone - as there are no proper resources available.
“It’s a 24/7 job,” Jane said. “And it’s quite lonely. You’re whole life changes, you’re isolated and your freedom is limited – that’s one of the hardest things.” Jane relies on private care when she has an appointment as the couple’s five children live away.

A Kerry woman is this week calling on the Government to wake up and listen to family carers in rural Ireland - who are feeling lost and isolated. Jane O’Sullivan from Ballyfinnane cares for her husband Donie, who was diagnosed with Alzheimers disease four years ago. This week Jane, who lives between Killarney and Tralee, added her voice to a campaign by the Alzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI) calling on the Government to make ‘dementia a key priority’. Last week, carers from all over Ireland attended the Emergency Dementia Summit (EDS) in Dublin, calling on the Minister for Health Simon Harris and Minister for Older People Jim Daly to make good on their public statements that ‘dementia is a key priority’ by directing urgently needed funds to dementia-specific services, in the 2019 HSE National Service Plan, which is to be announced shortly. ASI say that in Budget 2019, the Government has yet again ignored the shameful fact that people living with dementia in Ireland are being deprived of a basic minimum standard of care, as evidenced by the recent mapping of dementia services undertaken by the ASI
Recently a close family member passed away in Australia, but sadly Jane couldn’t travel, explaining that the cost of a private carer while away would have been too much. She says there is only one service for Alzheimers patients in Kerry, The Rosemary Day Centre in Tralee, but ideally she says there should be more. “Something as simple as having an Alzheimers Café that patients could interact with others like them. It’s little things like that.” Also, she added that there should be more resources available to help the carers care for a loved one. “I would like more funding to be available in the county for more services. “52 services are needed in Kerry and currently in Kerry there’s only six. The Government has to realise that the problem is bigger than they think.” The Alzheimers Society of Ireland said they will not stop advocating on behalf of all the people and families facing a dementia diagnosis. Helpline: The Alzheimer Society of Ireland National Helpline is open six days a week Monday to Friday 10am–5pm and Saturday 10am–4pm on 1800 341 341.
Killarney company secures rights to Sean Penn film There was big news for Killarney media company OC Productions this week as they secured the international distribution rights for the award-winning film ‘Mad Hannans’. OC will team up with Tralee’s Brian Hurley of Big Handsome Media for the venture, which will see the critically-acclaimed movie appear on television and online broadcasters, as well as at the European Content Markets. It has been a notable year for director and OC Productions founder Damian O’Callaghan; his highly anticipated film ‘Tradition’, which was shot entirely in the Killarney area, premiered at the Kerry Film Festival in October. The premiere, which was held at Cinema Killarney, was attended by renowned young Irish actors Barry Keoghan, and Saoirse Ronan, whose father Paul appeared in the film. The brainchild of Grammy-nominated producer Martin Shore, ‘Mad Hannans’ is a powerful true story about brothers, musicians, band-mates Jerry and Seán Hannan. It charts their rise, fall, and eventually, their reconciliation. With star appearances from Hollywood actor and Oscar winner Sean Penn, Pearl Jam Lead singer Eddie Vedder and Talking Heads guitarist Jerry Harrison, ‘Mad Hannans’ has just completed a successful festival circuit, receiving a number of awards including Best Documentary Film at the Manchester International Film Festival 2018.
Mad Hannans is a film by acclaimed producer Martin Shore. Inset: Killarney director Damian O’Callaghan.

TOWNTALK 1.5m viewers watch Michael on Late Late Toy Show
BY MICHELLE CREAN
Killarney boy Michael O’Brien (11), charmed over 1.5 million viewers during his appearance on this year’s Late Late Toy Show – the most-watched programme on Irish television for 2018. Visually impaired Michael, who said appearing on the country’s most loved show was “a dream come true”, was left stunned when he met his sporting hero Wexford hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald live during his planned book review. Michael, son of Michael and Noreen from Woodside, was chatting to presenter Ryan Tubridy explaining that Davy was his sporting hero, when the sportsman appeared on the set and presented the youngster with a GAA jersey and tickets to the All-Ireland final next September. This week, RTE revealed that ‘The Greatest Showman’ themed show was watched by an average audience of over 1.3 million live on the night, while a further 141,700 viewers watched their recording of the show on Saturday, and 51,9000 viewers did the same on Sunday. In addition, 113,000 watched the repeat viewing on RTÉ One on Saturday. On the RTÉ Player the show had record numbers, with 116,000 live streams, up 33 percent on last year, and over 100,000 watching on catch-up. The show was watched in over 100 countries outside of Ireland, with viewers logging on across the globe including Myanmar, Burundi, Haiti and Mongolia. Rory Darcy, Principal of St Oliver’s National School in Killarney, where Michael is a pupil, said that all staff and pupils are so proud of Michael. “We are so proud of him,” Rory said. “I’ve never seen him speechless before.” He said Michael is a fantastic young man and a pleasure to be around. “He has an infectious sense of humour and an ency-

clopaedic knowledge of sport, particularly Gaelic football, darts and boxing. “He’s the type of young lad you’d feel better around.” And before Michael departed for Dublin, the school treated him to a mini toy show.
“We practiced it in assembly and the Parents Association gave him a hamper full of treats for his journey.” He added the work Michael’s teacher Ciara O’Sullivan, Shirley McGough and Special Needs Assistant (SNA) Olive Horgan, do is just brilliant.
Heart-warming Kerry ad viewed 56,000 times BY ADAM MOYNIHAN
An inspirational advert co-starring Kerry footballer David Clifford has been viewed 56,000 times on Facebook this week. The ad, which was commissioned by the Kerry GAA Store, portrays a young boy trying on a Kerry jersey under the watchful gaze of his mother. As soon as he puts on the green and gold he transforms into Young Footballer of the Year David Clifford, perfectly encapsulating every young boy’s dream of becoming a Kerry footballer. The video has proved to be a hit on Facebook where it has been shared 637 times at the time of going to print. Store manager and former Kerry star Seán O’Sullivan, who also makes a cameo appearance in the ad, is pleased with how the video has been received. “We just wanted to try something different in terms of our social media,” he said. “We haven’t done anything like this before so we’re delighted with the way it came out. There has been a fantastic reaction. Da-
vid is a young man in demand but in fairness to him, the minute we put it to him what we wanted to do, he was on board straight away.” Seán also hailed the performance of the real star, young Fionn McGillicuddy who stole the show with his impressive acting skills. While Seán admits that there is no guarantee that Facebook views will translate to sales, he is hopeful that it will have a positive impact heading into the Christmas period. “It has people talking about the store and talking about the Kerry jersey. If that leads more to people coming in the door, it was well worth it.” The four-time All-Ireland winner, who recently took the reins from Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan at popular Outlet Centre store, was quick to praise Chris McGillicuddy and his team at the Brand Geeks who organised the production of the video and the talented Stephen O’Donoghue of Stephen O’Donoghue Wedding Films who recorded it.

Local girl thrilled to win dream Lapland trip
It will be an extra special festive season for one lucky local girl as she and her family will be jetting off to Lapland to get up close and personal with Santa Claus. Barraduff National School pupil Portia Gordon (10) couldn’t believe her good fortune when her name was drawn from the hat at the Christmas in Killarney Parade on Saturday. Now, she and her 6-year-old step-brother Noah Mayse-Kelleher, mom Linda and step-dad Niall Kelleher – the councillor and former Mayor of Killarney - will be whisked away for an overnight trip to the land of Old Saint Nick. The wonderful Christmas visit, which was made possible by the Christmas in Killarney committee, Sunway Holiday Company, Torc Travel Killarney and Kerry Airport, will include flights, accommoda-
tion, transfers and the services of a Sunway representative. Portia, who is a fifth-class pupil in Mr Gearóid O’Sullivan’s class, will meet Santa at his home and ride a sleigh, toboggan and snow mobile through a truly enchanted Winter wonderland. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Cllr Niall Kelleher said his step-daughter is “absolutely thrilled” and the whole family can’t wait for their overnight trip on December 13. “It’s something different and the kids are a good age for it,” he said. “Hopefully there’s snow there – I was told there was no snow there last week! But we’re all looking forward to it. We’ve a baby on the way in February so it’ll be nice to get a bit of a break and enjoy something magical.”
Plans for new Killarney hospital nearing completion It was revealed this week that plans for a new hospital in Killarney are nearing completion with construction expected to be finished by December 2022. Killarney Community Hospitals, namely the District Hospital and St Columbanus Hospital, will be replaced by a new 130 bed Community Nursing Unit. A preliminary sketch design has been completed and has been reviewed at a meeting with the town planners. A HSE Engineer has also been assigned to this project. Cllr John Joe Culloty raised the issue at a Regional Health Forum meeting. They replied saying a team is currently finalising the preliminary design. “The project is currently advancing through the Public Private Partnership process,” was the reply.
Radio personality and country music legend Dermot Moriarty has announced that he will be retiring from his job at Killarney Autos after 40 years of service. Next Friday, December 14 will be a poignant day at Killarney Autos as Dermot will officially retire. Dermot has been an integral member of the sales department at the popular car dealership for four decades, having first joined team on April 24, 1978. “I’ve had many great years at Killarney Autos,” he said. “There are some people who have been buying cars off me for 30 years and have never bought off anyone else. I’ve enjoyed every single bit of it and I’ve met wonderful people along the way. “Billy Daly and his brother Jimmy, their Dermot Moriarty. father the late Senator Jackie Daly, and Michael O’Shea, who was an accountant here when I came in; those people were so good to me when I was starting off here. “I had some experience because I had spent four years before that in Joe Ryan’s garage in New Street. He was a Fiat dealer. But when I got here, those people helped me and educated me on the motor business and how to look after people.” To mark his last week, Dermot will have some incredible, last chance deals on trade-ins on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Dermot’s many fans will be delighted to hear that the he will continue his work with Radio Kerry. He plans to spend his retirement “following the sun” with his wife Rita and his daughter Sinéad.
In Memoriam
Killarney remembers great GAA man Con The town of Killarney was deeply saddened recently following the death of popular local man Con Griffin. Con, who was originally from Tralee but lived at Bishop Moynihan Crescent for most of his life, was a familiar face to locals through his work at the Fitzgerald Stadium where he was a member of the committee. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Con’s wife Cáit expressed her gratitude to everyone in the community who passed on their condolences over the past ten days. “I’d like to thank relatives, neighbours and friends, doctors, nurses and staff at University Hospital Kerry and Ross Medical Centre, the priests of the parish, sacristan Tadhgie Fleming, O’Shea’s Funeral Home, Kennelly’s Pharmacy and everybody who was so kind to Con Griffin. us and did everything they could to help. “I’d also like to thank Dr Crokes, the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee, the East Kerry Board and the County Board. People really went above and beyond.” Con is survived by Cáit (Kissane), his sons Conor, John, Kieran, Pádraig and Colum, his daughters Áine, Kathryn, Claire and Maire, his 18 grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughers-in-law, his sisters Geraldine and Marie, brothers Martin and Tony, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and many good friends.

News Briefs ... Increase in numbers on hospital trolleys – Cllr Moriarty
07.12.18
HSE apologies after delayed cancer diagnosis
Fianna Fáil General Election Candidate for Kerry, Cllr Norma Moriarty has said that the numbers lying on trolleys at University Hospital Kerry’s Emergency Department have grown by 522 percent over the seven years of Fine Gael’s time in Government. “We have had a 522 percent increase in the number of people on trolleys in the November ED figures since 2011, when 45 were on trolleys compared to 280 in 2018. “Looking at the national figures, well over 100,000 people have now been left languishing on trolleys in the country’s emergency departments. “The people of Kerry are being affected by this atrocious overcrowding. Many of the people on trolleys are older, highly vulnerable people who cannot afford to be left waiting in hospital corridors.”
Call for drainage works in Pike Hill At the November 2018 monthly meeting of Killarney Municipal District Councillor Michael Gleeson asked Kerry County Council ensure that all roadside drains and water tables along and leading onto the Pike Hill, Killarney are properly opened, clean and free flowing as when blocked the water flows river-like across the road endangering road users. Kerry County replied that they will get drainage work done along the N22 at this location before the end of 2018. Councillor Gleeson highlighted the danger to traffic when water streams across the roadway due to blocked drains. This situation could very easily cause a vehicle to aquaplane and result in a serious accident. He further asked that regular inspections of the drains would be undertaken.
Call for property marking machine to be acquired in Kerry A member of the Joint Policing Committee (JPC) has called on Kerry County Council to acquire a property marking machine for the people of Kerry. Fianna Fail County Councillor, Michael Cahill who is also a member of the JPC has tabled a motion on the matter for the January meetings of the Council and the Joint Policing Committee. Councillor Cahill said the provision of such a service in the county would be a win-win for all concerned. The Killorglin Councillor said by advertising the service, it would act as a deterrent for potential thefts and the scheme would also be a great help to the Gardai in the return of stolen property that has been recovered. The Fianna Fail Councillor stated that the general public would have to buy into the scheme and he was confident that it would become a great success as has been the case in other counties such as Sligo where it has already been introduced.
Four patients have died and seven more have had their diagnosis delayed – a report on one of Ireland’s worst health scandals revealed this week. The South/South West Hospital Group (SSWHG) this week published findings from its comprehensive Radiology look-back review of radiology images at University Hospital Kerry (UHK), in the period March 2016 to July 2017. 46,234 radiology images, including CT Scans, Ultrasound Scans and Chest X-rays at (UHK) were reviewed and the findings made public at a press briefing in The Rose Hotel, Tralee, on Wednesday afternoon. The review was prompted by the notification to hospital management of three serious reportable events, each associated with a diagnostic error, in July and August 2017. The report stated that: ‘Eleven patients had their diagnosis delayed which had a serious impact on their health, including the initial three cases which prompted the review. The look-back found three patients with undiagnosed cancer, which had not previously been identified. Regrettably four of the eleven patients have passed away in the intervening time period between identifying their delay and the publication of the look-back Report.’ UHK, the HSE and the South/South West Hospital Group, have issued a sincere and unreserved apology. The peer review audit was grouped into three categories, Score 1, Score 2, and Score 3. • 44,831 were given a Score 1. This indicated there was agreement with original report or a minor abnormality of no on-going clinical significance. • 1,298 were given a Score 2. This related to an unreported finding that was unlikely to be of clinical significance, however, it required a review by a Clinical Subgroup. The patient may require
•
rescanning. 105 were given a Score 3. This required immediate communication to a Clinical Subgroup as the previously unreported finding was of potential or definitive significant clinical concern.
In total, the Clinical Subgroup reviewed 1,789 radiology reports against other clinical records to determine if the patient had appropriate follow-up care at the time of the original examination and if the patient required repeat imaging. 422 patients were identified for recall following the audit and clinical review. Following repeat imaging 59 patients required further clinical follow-up and/or investigations, and 10 patients were referred to other hospitals for specialist care. Dr Gerard O’Callaghan, Chair of the SIMT this week said that he would like to thank the patients and their families for the courtesy and understanding shown by them to the hospital staff in the course of this review. “This cannot have been easy particularly when having to deal with devastating news which would have had a profound effect on them and their families,” he said. “This was the biggest radiology look-back carried out in this country. It was carried out very professionally in a very short time period by dedicated hospital staff at UHK who went over and above their normal duties to complete the process as judiciously as possible whilst at the same time keeping the patients at the centre of all efforts and decisions. I would also like to express my thanks to the external radiology and medical staff as well as staff in the SSWHG for their support during this process.” Patients of UHK who have any concerns following the publication of the look-back review report are invited to contact the helpline - 1800 742 900 from 9am – 5pm.

Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney,Kerry and beyond
‘This whole thing may not all be down to a missed diagnoses by a single radiologist’ I sometimes wonder am I dealing with a different species when I come head-to-head with the public corporate world: I come away feeling I have just been in a novel called 1984 by George Orwell where nothing is at it seems, language is used to disguise, not communicate, and truth is an alien. You arrive to discover truth; but the intention from the top is to cover the truth. I get completely confused when I meet what I like to call this culture of missed truth. My head gets fuzzy from the tension. I feel I am dealing with something giant: I may as well be on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise in an episode of ‘Star Trek’ and one of those alien warships looms into my front screen! I am not on a spaceship in a conference room, indeed I know, but I feel a great glass barrier lies between me and these people at the top table. It’s like an octopus, it has a head, but it is difficult to find the head there are so many arms, and they all have the same speak. As solicitor Padraig O’Connell, who represents some of the patients put it – “there is all speak and little meaning”. Where did this approach originate? There is one thing certain it was there in the 1940s when Orwell wrote his chilling book. It probably originated out of the world of Stalinism, where people made themselves into an elite, gods above others, deciding how much the great unwashed should know. In the aftermath of the war which brought Europe to its knees, this thing got legs and arms and it grew. It has embedded itself firmly now into all arms of the State as to how the public should be dealt with. The worst example is the HSE, because here Big Brother has joined with the medics, and a particular species emerges. Would you believe there were three groups issuing that apology to those whose cancer diagnoses was delayed in Tralee on Wednesday? It takes three groups as well as a private very well paid press firm? Of course they can’t say how much the review has cost and how much the legal claims will be. Of course. Four people have died, they admit in this report which defies English. They admitted, verbally, more will die. In the press release, which probably cost a fortune, you actually have to look for the statement of fact that 11 cancer diagnoses were missed. It is at the top of page
two after a whole lot of “hidden” English. For example, the missed cancers were labelled “serious reportable events” - even the bog standard X-ray is labelled “plain film”. It appears the radiologist at the centre of all of this “lookback/review” analysed more X-rays than colleagues. Seven of the eleven involved X-rays. Six cases of lung cancers were missed in chest X-rays. One was for a year and a half. Cat Scans and one pelvic bone X-ray make up the other five. The language is one barrier. But truth is another. We think we know the facts, but we don’t really. We are not told for instance if concerns were raised about the individual radiologist way back, by staff members,
We think we know the facts, but we don’t really. by colleagues and others. And did management, ‘that octopus’, fail to act? Perhaps those who raised concerns couldn’t find the head of the octopus and went to the wrong arm? I have written here previously about the titles the grandees in the County Council operate under - but even these have a bit to go to catch up with the titles the grandees the health service give themselves. Cllr Toireasa Ferris SF has led the charge in questioning the scandal at UHK. And it is a scandal. It may even be as big a scandal as the cervical checks, if we ever get to the truth. She has chapter and verse on this and has evidence that concerns were raised by staff and colleagues about the radiologist concerned. She believes the radiologist is being scapegoated, and that intervention was needed earlier and management had been made aware of this. She says there are “systemic failures”. In December 2017, it was Cllr Ferris’ questions which forced the HSE and the hospital to admit that at the time in fact there were not just three missed cancers, there were seven.
This Wednesday, incredibly for such a huge scandal for Kerry, Cllr Ferris was the only public representative to attend a special briefing for councillors and other elected public representatives. 32 chairs were put out to accommodate our well paid and well expensed councillors, senators and TDs at 1.30pm and they lay empty. This is shameful and it is no wonder the HSE can ride rough shot over the public. (Perhaps we are paying our politicians and our public servants so well, a lot of whom, let’s face it, owe their jobs to political pull - we have created a ruling elite and it is in their interest not to rock the boat ?). Cllr Ferris says five people, not four people, have died, and the number of missed diagnoses is at least 12, not 11. I believe her. There is a whole chapter on communication in this report but there is no mention in the report at all about the fact the hospital and HSE had to be dragged kicking and screaming about admitting the review in the first place. It was only after Fergal Bowers on RTE broke the story in December 17, that a very resentful group of senior people held a briefing, which after the event is called a press conference. Yet this “Look-Back Review Report” (in my teaching days, I would label the title alone ‘redundant expression’) has chilling headings like ‘Communications Preparation’, ‘Open Disclosure’ and is full of jargon. X-rays aren’t called X-rays; and we have ‘peer review’, and the thing is full of redundant waffle like ‘demographically the average age of the population is increasing!’ – which should read: ‘the population is getting older’. In the meantime, they have refused to answer my question - were the vast majority of the delayed cancers and missed X-rays, perhaps ten of the eleven (I am told some of the lung cancers were glaringly obvious) women? Were they women? Also was it not alert GPs who first raised concerns? There is one concession in the report to the fact this whole thing may not all be down to a missed diagnoses by a single radiologist. In the strange world language of the HSE, this is how what may yet be the most important statement in all of the report is put: “The review and its results do not imply that the harm caused was exclusively attributable to the consultant radiologist whose work was reviewed.” Now what does that mean?

Historic Rally draws largest crowds since 2005 Killarney & District Motor Club hosted the annual Rentokil Initial Historic Rally last weekend and huge crowds flocked to Killarney to attend the only event of its kind in the country. The rally, which ran from Friday to Sunday, brings a welcome revenue boost to the town during the off-season, and organisers confirmed that crowds this year were the biggest they had seen since 2005 – the last time legendary Colin McRae competed in Killarney. World Rally Championship competitors Craig Breen (Waterford) and Paul Nagle (Killarney) participated in the prestigious rally and were a big hit with followers, as was Scottish motorsport legend and father of Colin, Jimmy McRae. Jimmy, who is 75 years of age, competed alongside local co-driver Mikie Galvin.
Participants and followers were full of praise for Clerk of the Course Martin Farrell who was presiding over his first Historic Rally. There was a full entry for this year’s rally which made it the only rally event in Ireland this year that was at maximum capacity. One potential speed bump was avoided on Saturday when a bride and groom who were due to tie the knot at 3pm in Kilcummin Church – which is located along the rally’s route – thankfully agreed to shift their nuptials to 1pm to accommodate the event. The Historic Category of the event was won by Cork man Owen Murphy and his co-driver Anthony Nestor in a Talbot Sunbeam Lotus. The winners only barely managed to see off a strong challenge from Rathmore’s Mark Falvey alongside co-driver James O’Brien in their Ford Escort RS1600. In the end, just 1.1
seconds separated first and second, another tough break for Falvey who also finished runner-up in 2017. Meanwhile, Declan Gallagher of Donegal claimed the Modified Category with Kilcummin man James McCarthy on the notes. Gallagher drove his Toyota Starlet RWD to victory with one minute and 40 seconds to spare over Enda O’Brien and John Butler in a Ford Escort RS Mk2. Local driver Colin O’Donoghue achieved a fantastic result with co-driver Eddie Doherty as he came fourth in his first time out in his father’s BMW E30. Dave Slattery and Denis Coffey (11th) was the top local crew while Killarney father-and-son crew Charlie and Johnny Hickey finished 14th. Talented local driver Rob Duggan was forced to retire on Stage 4 while leading.

Large crowds attend annual SuperValu Food Fair Customers at Daly’s SuperValu were treated to a wide selection of baked goods, meats, treats and drinks at the popular store’s annual food fair on Wednesday evening. Large crowds flocked to the Park Road supermarket and there was certainly something for everyone; 49 separate demonstrations were set up around the store offering free samples of delicious produce to SuperValu’s loyal clientele. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, store manager PJ McGee said the food fair was a huge success. “It was exceptional,” he said. “It ran from 6pm to about 8pm and there was a continuous flow of people. The feedback from customers is that they enjoyed the night and the quality of the food was excellent. It was a meeting point for people as well; it was a real social occasion.” Mr McGee said the event, now in its seventh year, provided SuperValu with the opportunity to show appreciation to their regular customers. “We do it every year and it’s a great way to give something back to our customers, while also promoting local products and suppliers,” he said. “We also had over 20 special offers around the store over the past couple of days. It’s just a way to say thank you to our regulars for their custom throughout the year.”

New club plans to combat loneliness and isolation A new club which is setting up this January plans to combat isolation and loneliness in the locality. Killarney Lions Club have set up the first ever Kerry Clubs Fair which will be free and open to the public. The aim is to give adults in Kerry an easy way to find out about activities they can be part of in the county. The event, which takes place at Killarney Racecourse from 2pm – 5pm on January 20, will feature clubs and societies that people might like to participate in or volunteer with, be it for fun, recreation or just to be involved, explained Ronan Doyle, Killarney Lions Club President. “The idea is to give people a chance to meet clubs and other organisations that are active in the community and hopefully find something they are interested in,” Ronan said. “It could be that someone wants to try a new activity, or is new to the area, or wants to give back to their community through volunteering – whatever the reason, it will be a fun event and everyone is welcome to come along on the day.” And, not only will the new club address isolation and loneliness that people may be experiencing, they also want to help improve health and well-being in the community. Over 25 clubs have already signed up to be part of the fair including Men’s Shed, First Responders, Irish Countrywomen’s Association, Tidy Towns, Southwest Coun-

Rotary Club hosts 15th successful art and wine event Up to 700 came out to support the 15th annual Killarney Rotary ‘Evening of Wine and Art’ – making it another huge success. Guests gathered in the Great Southern Hotel on Thursday evening where they were treated to a cheese and wine reception, sponsored by Daly’s SuperValu, Killarney. It was a superb occasion once again with an array of art on display, Simon Lumby, Killarney Rotary President, explained. “It’s the highlight of the social calendar,” Simon told the Killarney Advertiser. “There was approximately 700 people in attendance and they seemed to enjoy themselves. “We had about 40 artists and a lot of variety, some unusual art, some of which stood out.” Killarney Rotary Club first organised the hugely successful and popular ‘Evening of Wine and Art’ event in 2003, and it is now regarded as one of the best nights out on the Kerry social calendar. This year’s beneficiaries include Beaufort Youth Club, Coolick National School, Gaelscoil Faithleann, Killarney Swimming Club, Killarney Athletic, The Micro Track and The Stephen Lyne Foundation. “Killarney Brewing Company supported us again this year and we had a table with some fabulous jewellery which the ladies really liked. There was also a raffle run by the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and Sean Treacy, a member of the Rotary Club, masterminded the auction.” There was also live music on the night by Mike Neeson and proceeds from the cloakroom will go to support the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club.

CHARITY CONCERT: Mary Culloty O’Sullivan, presents ‘Christmas Melodies’ in aid of Living Links, on December 14, in the Community Hall at the Church of the Resurrection Killarney.
Killarney soprano Mary Culloty O’Sullivan is planning a festive fundraising night of songs and poetry in town next week. ‘Christmas Melodies’, an evening of traditional Christmas carols, poetry, Irish ballads and love songs, will be held on December 14, at 7.30pm, in the Community Hall at the Church of the Resurrection Killarney. All are invited to attend and there’s no charge in on the night, Mary explained. However, afterwards donations can be made to Living Links, a charity which provides information and support to those bereaved by suicide. Mary, a classically trained soprano, will sing on the night. Also her newly formed group ‘Finding Your Voice’, will be performing publicly for the very first time. Mary, who lost her brother-in-law Denis O’Sullivan to suicide eight years ago, said she wanted to do something in his memory and also to help others. “I’m very aware of what people go through,” Mary told the Killarney Advertiser. “This is in memory of him and others that have lost somebody. We know what they’re going through.” Michael Egan from Tipperary, who founded Living Links, will also be in attendance on the evening and will say a few words, she added. There’ll be spot prizes up for grabs on the night as well as refreshments served afterwards. “It will be a wonderful social evening, a fabulous Christmas event leading into the festive period.”

Kerry for Choice welcomes the passage of the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill in the Dáil as a momentous step towards achieving abortion rights in Ireland. “The people of Kerry voted for timely and local access to abortion for pregnant people here at home,” Paula Dennan, spokesperson for Kerry for Choice sai. “Since the decisive Yes vote on May 25, more than 1,650 people have travelled abroad for an abortion and over 550 have imported safe, but illegal, abortion pills. We know that at least one woman every week leaves Kerry to access the abortion care they need. “The Government has a duty to ensure that come January we do not find ourselves in a situation where women in rural Ireland are simply swapping planes and boats for buses and trains,” she said. “Abortion care must be provided locally if it is to be truly accessible to everyone who needs it.”

07.12.18 Economic Boost
Church concerts bring €250k to Killarney
Archdeacon Simon J Lumby is both “surprised and delighted” with the figures.
St Mary’s Church of Ireland has revealed that their popular concerts programme attracted a whopping €250,000 to the local economy in 2018 alone. Some 50 concerts took place at the landmark church this year, raising €25,000 for the Church Restoration Fund in the process. An analysis of the benefits to the wider community was recently completed and the results show that the recitals are worth 10 times that figure to the town of Killarney. Visiting choirs boost the economy by spending money on accommodation, food and drink, and leisure activities during their stay. The concerts have been running for over 10 years so it is estimated that the town may have already benefitted to the tune of €2 million. The acoustics at St Mary’s Church are highly regarded by performers, making it extremely popular with visiting choirs and orchestras from North America and Europe. Its beauty and location are also unique selling points. “We were both surprised and delighted when we saw the figures,” the Rector of Killarney, Archdeacon Simon J Lumby,
said. “It’s great that the church is able to lift the economic wellbeing of the community; it’s a part of our spiritual task of ‘loving our neighbour’. We are especially delighted for our hotel sector and local tour operators who see the benefit of this uplift. “The town shows its support to us. We remember gratefully the superb community effort to restore the church railings.” Archdeacon Lumby stressed that running these concerts was challenging considering the church’s relatively small congregation, and any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. “We are always looking to add volunteers to our stewarding rota; it takes three people to maintain the safety and comfort of visitors at a concert,” he said. “The church will welcome any offers of help in this regard so that they can accept more concert bookings in the coming years and continue to grow this worthwhile enterprise, not just for the social benefit and leisure of locals and visitors alike, but also for the economic value it represents to our fabulous town.”

The commencement of the project is imminent now that a contractor has been selected to carry out the work. “We want to thank the KCC Engineers - David Doyle, Paul Neary, John Ahern and Brendan Mulhern, and everyone else in Kerry County Council who was involved along the way, including Maura Walsh of IRD Duhallow, and the local community council.”
Kerry duo hoping to go on a Winning Streak Two Kerry men will be hoping get their Christmases off to a winning start when they appear on the National Lottery Winning Streak game show this Saturday night. Mark Sugrue, from Castleisland and Garda Dave Morris, who is originally from Inchicore in Dublin but now living in Cromane, are hoping to strike it lucky. Mark has been a barman for more than 10 years and is getting ready for his busiest time of the year as the festivities begin to peak. He works in Kearney’s bar in Castleisland, a job he has had for about four months now. In fact his boss, Betty O’Connell, will be among his supporters in the audience on the night. Dave Morris was with his sister Anne Morris when she got a call on Saturday evening and when he saw the expression on her face, he feared something bad had happened. Low and behold it was a call to say that she had been chosen to appear on Winning Streak. In the midst of all the celebrations, Anne realised that she was to travel to New York City this Wednesday for a shopping trip with her daughter Ellie. Winning Streak will be broadcast on RTÉ One at 8.15pm, co-presented by Marty Whelan and Sinead Kennedy.

Large attendance at the annual Brehon Christmas Tree Party Very generous boys and girls from right around Kerry gathered in The Brehon, armed with toys to donate to St Vincent de Paul, last Sunday. Over 100 children and their parents came together for the annual ‘Lighting of The Brehon Christmas Tree’ and were entertained by the St Brigid’s Secondary School Carollers and The Gleneagle Concert Band. Santa himself made a special appearance to turn on the lights of the 30ft tall Brehon Christmas Tree, and meet with all the kind-hearted boys and girls. “We wish to thank everyone for donating toys and money to this very worthy cause,” Sinead McCarthy, General Manager of The Brehon, said. “Thank you also to Santa Claus, who took time out of his very busy schedule to call and meet all the boys and girls.” Moira, Sean, Moss, Stella, and Millie Hughes, at the annual ‘Lighting of the Christmas Tree’ and Santa visit at the Brehon Hotel, Killarney, in aid of St Vincent de Paul.

Couple donate almost €4,000 to Féileacáin A selfless couple who overcame personal tragedy, kindly donated almost €4,000 to charity last week. Bridget and Stephen McCarthy from Listry, who sadly lost their baby daughter Avery at 20 weeks in October 2016, donated €3,830 to Féileacáin, a not-for-profit organisation that supports those affected by the death of a baby during or shortly after pregnancy. After the tremendous support they received from the charity they felt wanted to give something back. Stephen took part in this year’s Dublin City Marathon in October, finishing in 3 hours 57 minutes. In the process he raised the funds, Bridget explained. “We were completely blown away by all the support we received, and all the well wishes for Stephen as he was the one running the Dublin City Marathon on behalf of Féileacáin,” Bridget said. “We are delighted to announce the final figure raised was €3,830 and a huge thank you to all those who supported us achieving this in honour of the memory of our daughter Avery.” Féileacáin, she explained, provides a huge amount of support to families who unfortunately are in the same situation as them. Féileacáin currently provides between 800-1000 memory boxes to hospitals each year. “The memory box, given by the charity to recently bereaved parents, is hugely important to families,” she said. “This box provides so many opportunities for parents to create memories with their baby, by providing them with the necessary items to take hand and footprints. “Also inside are the two little teddy bears which I know I cherish.
Bridget and Patrick McCarthy recently donated €3,830 to charity Féileacáin. Pictured were: Bridget and Patrick McCarthy with Niamh Clifford, Kathleen Griffin, Jenna from Féileacáin and Stephen Griffin.
“Baby takes one that is filled with love and one stays with parents. The blanket has been knitted with love to wrap baby in. These memory boxes are a huge and valuable part of the grieving process as they provide the opportunity to create precious memories which can be looked at over and over again.”
Also provided is a beautiful candle with baby’s name and date of birth which can be ordered from the office. She added that all money raised through fundraising goes back to the charity, ensuring that families are supported during one of the hardest times of their lives.

Grace unleashes new record this Sunday Killarney singer Grace Foley will launch her new record ‘Unleashed’ this Sunday, December 9, in the INEC Acoustic Club. The evening kicks off at 8pm with Maria Walsh as MC, and all are welcome to attend. Grace, who is a ‘Contralto’ singer, which is the lowest and most rare female voice, brings a whole new colour and flavour to the Classical Crossover world. Performing songs by songwriters like Damien Rice, Lana Del Rey and Simon and Garfunkel, this promises to be a fantastic night’s entertainment. Grace started her music career at the delicate age of two, singing Cliff Richard’s ‘Mistletoe and Wine’ for a rather intimate audience of parents and grandparents. And, although she describes herself as being naturally quite shy, this hasn’t stopped the Killarney native from pursuing her dream of becoming a full-time professional singer. She began her studies with Aine Nic Ghabhann and went on to study at the Royal Irish Academy of Music with Virginia Kerr. The singer still has a huge amount of love for classical repertoire and hopes to delve into it from time to time, but her heart really does lie with the more contemporary still of music. “This whole process has been incredible, from beginning to end,” Grace told the Killarney Advertiser. “They say that if you love what you do you won’t work a day in your life. Well, I don’t really agree with that because I think it is hard work, self-belief and a little bit of magic that got me here today. This recording reflects so many aspects of who I am and it truly has made me realise that, without a doubt, this is what
Killarney singer Grace Foley will launch her new record ‘Unleashed’ in the INEC Acoustic Club this Sunday.
I want to do for the rest of my life. I cannot wait to perform this music live with an incredible band and to finally let everyone else join in this exciting part of my journey.”

Wedding Feature
Wedding day and birthday rolled into one! Saturday November 24 was a very special day for local couple Sarah Boyle and Shane Doona - as not only did they tie the knot – but Sarah also celebrated her birthday. The couple, who live in Park Drive in Killarney, made their vows in a civil ceremony at The Rose Hotel in Tralee, where they celebrated afterwards with family and friends. Sarah, who is originally from Tralee and works in Bolger Fabrication Ltd., in Clash, met Shane, who works in MD O’Shea and Sons, on a night out in Killarney nearly five years ago. They spent just over a year planning their perfect wedding day and say it couldn’t have gone better. Chief bridesmaid was Sarah’s daughter Alanah Boyle, bridesmaid Aisling Nolan, Best Man was Shane’s brother James Doona, and groomsman was friend Killian Hutchinson. The couple’s year-and-a-half-old twins, Fionn and Róisín, did a great job as pageboy and flower girl. Sarah was joined on the day by her mom Eileen and older
sister Frances, and Sarah’s late father Paddy was also remembered during the ceremony. Shane’s family included his parents Breda and Dan from Pinewood, brothers Dan and Mikey, sisters Orla, who travelled over from Australia especially for the wedding, and Catherine. Unusually the couple opted away from tradition and had their photos taken in Blennerville before the ceremony with Killarney photographer Dylan Clifford, as they wanted to spend as much of the day with their family and guests as they could. “We had a great day,” Sarah, who collected 140 china tea cups for the reception, said. “Madeleine Doyle, wedding coordinator at The Rose Hotel was absolutely fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble.” Afterwards the couple spent a few days away relaxing with the twins in Clonakilty.

Performance plans to raise the roof in Killarney
Performers are preparing for their Killarney concert in the Friary next week.
Professionals are promising to raise the roof in the Friary next week, with their take on Handel’s ‘Messiah’. Solo singers, choirs and an orchestra are planning a spectacular event on Sunday, December 16, at 8pm. Professional soloists Aisling O’Carroll (Soprano, Tralee), Sarah-Ellen Murphy (Contralto, Limerick), Fearghal Curtis (Tenor, Dublin) and Cormac Lawlor (Bass, Tralee) will be joined by the Kerry Chamber Choir and the Kerry Chamber Orchestra, directed from the keyboard by Aidan O’Carroll. “A performance of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ is always a spectacular event, with solo singers, choirs and orchestra literally raising the roof with some of the most sublime music ever written,” Aidan O’Carroll said. “The magnificent and unique setting in the Friary is a perfect match for the ‘Messiah’. There is always a full rehearsal on the day of the performance. The or-
chestra and soloists are professional and gather from all parts of the country. The Kerry Chamber Choir members are all trained singers and this is what gives the performance that extra special magic.” Regarded by many as an essential part of Christmas, the ‘Messiah’ was given its world premiere on April 13, 1742 in Neil’s Music Hall, Fishamble Lane, Dublin, close to Christ Church. “The ‘Messiah’s’ universal fame and popularity arose from the dramatic and often exhilarating music of movements such as ‘For Unto Us a Child is Born’, ‘I Know That My Redeemer Liveth’, ‘He was Despised’, ‘The Trumpet Shall Sound’, and, of course, the sublime ‘Hallelujah Chorus’. To encourage young people and families to attend, children are free when accompanied by an adult, he added. Tickets are available at the Friary office 064 6631334 or from the Kerry School Music on 066 7125690.

Locals dig deep to support Sully BY MICHELLE CREAN
A substantial amount was raised on Friday night for a much loved local mechanic who fell ill almost three months ago. Up to 400 friends and family of John ‘Sully’ Sullivan (52), dug deep in the K-Town Bar and Grill for ‘A Night for Sully’, to support him and his family. Sully, who is self-employed, is currently in the Mater Hospital in Dublin after becoming seriously sick with sepsis. And although he has a long and slow road to recovery, he is making progress, his close personal friend Donal Shine told the Killarney Advertiser. Donal explained that the fundraising night received great support. “It went fabulously, there was great support and it exceeded all our expectations. There was definitely 400 there. You couldn’t get in the door as it was so packed.” Musicians on the night included John Nolan, Peter Fleming, Tom Moran, Teddy Sugrue, Joe Quinlan, Billy Coffey and Jimmy Canty to name just a few. There was also a raffle and spot prizes and Sully’s daughter Emma thanked everyone. “We’d also like to thank everyone who came and supported the fundraiser,” Donal said. “We’re planning another one again in the New Year and details will be announced soon.”

Double 50th
Work colleagues celebrate a century between them! It was double celebrations in Killarney on Thursday night last as two work colleagues were treated to a big night out to mark their 50th birthdays. Madeline O’Shea and James Coughlan, who both work in St Mary of the Angels, celebrated a double 50th birthday with 20 friends and colleagues in The Porter House. Nurse James officially celebrates this Sunday, December 9, while Madeline, who works as a care assistant, celebrates just one day later, on Monday December 10. Their kind-hearted colleagues treated both to dinner and drinks and had a great night out, explained work colleague Patricia Foley, who helped organise the celebration. “It was a great night, everyone enjoyed it and we finished up in the Grand,” Patricia, who knows James 17 years and Madeline 28 years, said. “We said we’d have it early for both of them because of all the Christmas parties coming up.” And it wasn’t just dinner and drinks the two received for their birthdays. Earlier this year Madeline was treated to a trip away to Amsterdam with six of her work colleagues, while James enjoyed a holiday in Portugal with the boys.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Cubans to be granted access to 3G mobile network Cuba’s population is to be offered internet access via a 3G mobile network from later this week. Telecom provider Etecsa said citizens would be able to start subscribing to the service from Thursday. Until now, locals have mostly relied on wi-fi hotspots and internet cafes and the 3G service has been restricted to state-employed journalists and foreign businesses among others. This will change but many will still be unable to afford the new contracts.
Etecsa’s packages range from a month’s use of 600MB of data for 7CUC ($7; €6.18) to 4GB for 30CUC. Users get a bonus 300MB use of local .cu domain websites. However, the average state wage for the island’s 11.2 million residents is the equivalent of about €26.70 per month. The launch marks a further relaxation of the government’s restrictions on online activity. Until five years ago, access was largely limited to tourist hotels and state-operated clubs.

Half of American adults have had family member jailed
Nearly half of all US adults have had an immediate family member incarcerated at some point in their lives, according to a new study. Researchers also reported one in seven adults have seen immediate family incarcerated for over a year, with minorities most impacted. The study by criminal justice non-profit FWD.us and Cornell University surveyed over 4,000 American adults. Over 2 million Americans are currently in prison in the US. The report estimates 64% of US adults have had someone in their family spend at least one night in jail or prison. The study’s authors said it pointed to a nationwide “incarceration crisis”. “These numbers are stunning, all the more so if you think of them not as
numbers but as stories like mine,” Felicity Rose, FWD director said in a foreword to the report. “One of the worst parts of growing up with a father in and out of prison was the isolation and shame I felt,” she added. One in five US adults has had a parent incarcerated, according to the study, resulting in serious financial and emotional consequences. The study said that 113 million US adults have had an immediate family member incarcerated. At the time of the research, 6.5 million adults said an immediate family member was currently in jail or prison. One in seven adults have had a spouse incarcerated; one in eight have had a child locked up. And only one in four are ever able to visit an incarcerated family member.
Trump criticised for not reciting Apostles’ Creed Tom Cruise urges viewers President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump have been criticised for not reciting the Apostles’ Creed during the funeral of former President George HW Bush at the Washington National Cathedral on Wednesday. The Trumps appeared to abstain from joining the rest of the church, which included former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, along with their wives, as they read the Creed from their programmes. “Striking that all the former Presidents and First Ladies recited the Apostles Creed, but Trump and Melania stood silently and did not. The creeds are at the heart of historic orthodox Christianity,” journalist and author Jon Ward tweeted. Twitter user Paul Edwards wrote: “Does it bother anyone else that President Trump is
standing with his arms folded, silent, while the rest of the congregation recites the Apostles Creed? Can he not affirm the faith expressed in the Creed?” Many called to question evangelical Christians’ support of Trump, who won 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016. Malia Miranda tweeted that she “can’t believe Evangelicals anointed a man who doesn’t recite the Apostles’ Creed.” “This is shameful for a Christian who refuses to say the Apostles Creed,” Twitter user Larry L Tillman wrote. “I told you he’s playing like he is a Christian just to get Christians to support him. Shameful but he don’t fool me, he won’t get my support.” The Creed, which professes central Christian beliefs like Jesus’ birth to the Virgin Mary and ascension to heaven, connects Christians of different traditions and practices, according to a definition by the Church of England.
Never fails to entertain
to change TV settings In an impassioned video posted to Twitter on Tuesday, the Mission Impossible star warned that a default setting on many highend televisions “makes most movies look like they were shot on high-speed video instead of film”. Taking a break from filming the new Top Gun film, he appeared alongside director Christopher McQuarrie, who pleads with viewers to do a quick internet search and find out how to change the correct settings. “If you own a modern high-definition television,” he said, “there’s a good chance you’re not watching movies the way the filmmakers intended, and the ability for you to do so is not simple to access.” Motion smoothing, or interpolation, is a technique that artificially adds additional frames to the moving image in order to prevent blurring - most effective when watch-
ing sport. But many in the film industry hate it, however, as it can degrade the image quality of the original film, and alter colouring. In the video posted on Tuesday, Mr Cruise added: “Filmmakers are working with manufacturers to change the way video interpolation is activated on your television, giving you easier access and greater choice on when to use this feature.”

China demands release Leicester helicopter crash of Huawei CFO

China is demanding the release of telecoms giant Huawei’s chief financial officer, who has been detained in Canada. Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of the company’s founder, could face extradition to the US. She was arrested in Vancouver on December 1, but the news was not made public at her request. The charges remain unknown but the US has been probing Huawei over possible violation of sanctions against Iran. China says her detention is possibly a rights abuse. Ms Meng has sought a publication ban on the details of the arrest, which has been granted by the courts. Huawei said it was “not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms
Meng”. Huawei is one of the largest telecommunications equipment and services providers in the world, recently passing Apple to become the second-biggest smartphone maker after Samsung. European shares hit a two-year low and indexes across Asia dropped sharply following the arrest. Beijing has itself frequently been accused by rights groups of rights abuses including unexplained detentions. Ms Meng’s arrest comes at a sensitive time for US-China relations. The nations are engaged in a trade war that has seen both impose duties of billions of dollars on one another’s goods.
Calling New Zealander “Kiwi” not offensive, judge rules A New Zealand woman has unsuccessfully argued that she was a victim of racial discrimination after being labelled a “Kiwi” by her colleagues in Australia. Julie Savage said she was disrespected when her boss and co-workers referred to her as “Kiwi” instead of her name. However, an Australian tribunal ruled that she had not suffered unfair treatment or discrimination at work. A judge noted that the term was commonly used by New Zealanders themselves. “Calling a New Zealander a ‘Kiwi’ is not of itself offensive. ‘Kiwi’ is not an insult,” said Judge Leonie Farrell. She added that the word was often viewed as a “term of endearment”. It is derived from the name of a
flightless bird native to the country. Ms Savage said the issue had prompted her to resign from her job as a supervisor at Vili’s Cakes, a bakery in Adelaide, in 2016. She later lodged a complaint with the South Australian Employment Tribunal. But the tribunal found no evidence that discrimination laws had been violated.
Investigators have revealed that a faulty mechanical connection linking the pilot’s pedals to the aircraft’s tail rotor was the cause of the fatal Leicester City helicopter crash. Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, staff member Nusara Suknamai and Kaveporn Punpare, pilot Eric Swaffer and another passenger, Izabela Roza Lechowicz, lost their lives on October 27 after the businessman’s helicopter crashed following take-off. The aircraft, a €7.5m 2016 Augusta
AW169, reached an altitude of approximately 430ft before plummeting to the ground in a car park next to the King Power Stadium and was “rapidly engulfed in an intense post-impact fire”, authorities said at the time. Following a six-week investigation, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) concluded the tail rotor failure caused the helicopter to violently veer to the right, resulting in the crash. Footage of the incident appeared to show sections of the tail rotor may have fallen off in mid-air.
French government expects “major violence”
The French government says it fears “major violence” in Paris on Saturday as the national “yellow vests” protest movement shows little sign of easing. The government said it was scrapping the fuel tax increases in its budget - the original spark for the protests. But broader discontent with the government has spread, and protests have erupted over several other issues. On Thursday young people took to the streets, protesting over educational reforms. More than 140 people were arrested when a protest outside a school in Mantes-la-Jolie in Yvelines ended in clashes with police. Dozens of other
schools were blockaded in cities including Marseille, Nantes and Paris. Students have been angered by President Emmanuel Macron’s plans to change the end-of-school exam, known as the baccalaureate, which is required for entrance to university. Critics fear the reforms will limit opportunity and breed inequality. Meanwhile, Saturday’s planned rally of the yellow vests looks set to go ahead. Recent protests have turned violent, causing millions of euros in damage. Police have advised shops and restaurants on the Champs-Elysees to shut for the day. Some museums in Paris have also said they will be closed.

Aston Martin
Aston Martin to offer EV powertrain for classic models
V
Aston Martin will soon offer its owners of some of its most valuable classic models the chance to convert them to run on pure-electric power. The thinking behind a zero-emissions classic, Aston claims, is it will effectively ‘future-proof’ them, allowing for them to be driven and enjoyed in cities that are proposing banning petrol or diesel-powered vehicles. The first classic to have undergone the open-heart surgery to swap its traditional internal combustion engine for an electric motor and battery pack is a 1970 Mk2 DB6 Vantage Volante. Proving the cleverness of the installation, the new powertrain
uses exactly the same engine and gearbox mounts while engineers have also developed an electrical architecture that plugs into the DB6’s original electrical system. Inside, designers have been careful to hide any additional switchgear needed to operate the EV, including hiding a small screen that’s required to control and monitor the power management. Ironically, it’s thought that many European governments that are planning city-wide diesel or petrol vehicle bans are likely to offer owners of cherished classic cars specific exemptions to drive their vehicles without facing penalties on account of the minimal annual mileage they accrue.
WRC Briefs
Toyota WRC team reveals Kris Meeke’s co-driver
Toyota has announced its 2019 World Rally Championship signing Kris Meeke will be co-driven by Seb Marshall. Meeke, who was axed by Citroen earlier in the year, and co-driver Paul Nagle split amicably ahead of Meeke’s 2019 WRC return with Toyota. The team has now confirmed Marshall will replace Paul Nagle in one of the three Yaris WRCs.
No outings for Sebastien Loeb in 2019
Sebastien Loeb will be left out in the cold next season after Citroen failed to secure funding to run a third C3 WRC in next year’s World Rally Championship. Citroen team principal met with officials from the team’s Abu Dhabi backers but the two parties failed to reach an agreement to take the partnership forward in 2019.
M-Sport Ford wins Rally Car of the Year
The M-Sport Ford Fiesta RS World Rally Car has been named Rally Car of the Year at the 2018 Autosport Awards. M-Sport’s semi-independent 2018 challenger faced plenty of competition during the World Rally Championship season but was a winner of four rallies in the hands of Sebastien Ogier - who eventually clinched his sixth-straight WRC title and second with Malcolm Wilson’s squad.
New Land Rover Defender just days away The new-generation Land Rover Defender will be revealed in final production form – not as a concept – within days. That’s right, if you thought the automotive year was starting to wind down, and that the new Range Rover Evoque would be Land Rover’s final new model debut for 2018, then think again. Land Rover let slip earlier this year that it would reveal the all-new Defender as the culmination of its 70 Years of Land Rover celebrations in 2018, ahead of its global release throughout 2019. As these fresh spy shots show, the reinvented Defender - codenamed L663 - will be a radical departure from the model it replaces, and the original Series I Land Rover released in 1948.
Land Rover says a number of pilot-build prototype Defenders are now testing on public roads outside its Gaydon facility in the UK, including cold-weather testing in Arjeplog, Sweden and hot-weather testing in Death Valley, USA.

Kilcummin Comhaltas
Traditional music song and dance was the flavour of the day at Lee Nursing Home as the depth of talent amongst the Kilcummin branch members was clear to see and much appreciated by residents and staff of both nursing homes. Thanks also to Adrian from the Moriarty School of Dancing for orchestrating our dancing troops throughout the day. It’s great to give a little back in the run-up to Christmas and we all valued our time with some wonderful people. The smiles on the faces of performers, residents and staff was a fitting reward to a great day. ST VINCENT DE PAUL ANNUAL CHURCH GATE COLLECTION will be held before all masses in the parish this weekend December 8/9. Your generous support will be deeply appreciated.

“We are all responsible for our planet” World Soil Day took place on Wednesday this week, and according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, 33 percent of the world’s soils are degraded. Did you know that soil can hold three times more carbon than atmosphere which can help us meet climate change challenges. 95 percent of our food comes from soil, 815 million people are food insecure, while two billion people are nutritionally insecure – but we can mitigate this through soil. These facts are courtesy of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, www.un.org, and to highlight the issue, the UN has set aside one day in the year as World Soil Day, which took place on Wednesday, December 5. Soil degradation is the result of many actions, over use of fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides would be the most obvious. However, soil compaction due to heavy machinery driving over it is also a factor, as is erosion. Not replenishing our soil with natural materials such as compost is also a factor in the decrease of nutrients in our soil – which unfortunately means our veggies also have less nutrients in them too. We are all responsible for our planet, whether we are using soil on a large scale, such as farmers, or on a small scale, such as our garden. Even if we have no garden at all, making sure we don’t pollute the hedgerows and parklands is in our hands. A few ways in which to help our own gar-
den soil is by using as much homemade compost as possible. All uncooked kitchen waste is compostable, as is raw cardboard (not cardboard which has a glossy print), newspaper, twigs, eggshells, straw, weeds - the list is endless. Having a good mixture is crucial, as microorganisms need both carbon and nitrogen to survive and thrive. At this time of year composting slows down due to cooler temperatures. Keep your compost heap warm by covering with a piece of old carpet, cardboard or even weed suppressant will do the job also. If you use a compost bin, moving it to a South facing wall will help. Mulching with straw or seaweed is a great way to keep weeds down, as well as being good for the soil. Sowing crops in beds which are empty is also super for the soil. Use Winter rye at this time of year and dig in the Spring. It is often advised to ‘dig over’ beds which are not in use in the Autumn. This advice applies to areas which get a hard frost and serves the purpose of breaking up the soil. However, here we normally only get a lot of rain, which leads to waterlogging, compaction and leaching out of nutrients. So it is best left to Spring, before planting. Even though World Soil Day has come and gone – yes, I should have written about it sooner - soil is one of the most important resources we have and should be something we take care of every day.

Jackie Healy-Rae TD MCC, Main Street, Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry, Who died on the 5th Dec 2014.
I’ve asked the angels to keep a watchful eye on you on this sad day, But the reply I got was simply that they were watching anyway, They had a request from a new angel, Who is being fitted with new wings, Who like all angels in Heaven will do such wonderful things, So when you feel your sorrow is a burden too great to bear, Remember beautiful angels and your loved one will be there.
Nothing on earth can ever replace, The sound of your voice, Or the smile on your face, No verse, no flowers, no tears can say, How much we miss you everyday.
Some day we hope to meet again, Some day we know not when, To clasp their hands in a better land, Never to part again. Sadly missed

I knew I had to let you go. My last words to you, Even though it broke my heart. We never say Goodbye, I’ll see you soon, my love. I see your eyes open more and that look I’ll never forget. As you seen something familiar and quietly slipped away. FOREVER IN MY HEART MY ANGELA.
MCGOUGH Dad I did not know that morning, What sadness the day would bring, You were gone before I knew it, And I could not do a thing, I did not see you close your eyes, Or hear your last sigh, I was not there to hold your hand, Or say a last goodbye, It broke my heart to lose you, Your parting caused such pain, Thank you for the years we shared, Until we meet again. Loved and missed everyday by your daughter Michelle, son-in-law John, grandchildren Clara, Emma and Cialann. Dad If i could write a story, It would be the greatest ever told, Of a kind and loving father, Who had a heart of gold, He never looks for praises, Was never one to boast, He went on quietly working, For those he loved the most, I remember all he taught me, The good times that we had, Glad to be his daughter and proud to call him Dad.

Revamped O’Donoghue Cup could solve fixtures crisis Exclusive Adam Moynihan
Solving the fixtures crisis is possible in 2019 - if the East Kerry Board agrees to scrap the Super League and play the O’Donoghue Cup earlier in the year. I sat down this week to look at the current football calendar and I must admit that having examined the schedule with a magnifying glass, I have a lot more sympathy for the East Kerry Board than I had before. The bottom line is that clubs are involved in too many competitions and if teams from the district advance to the Munster Championship in November, things get extremely messy. In a perfect world, the GAA Central Council would have passed Roscommon’s motion to adopt a blank canvas approach to the 2019 schedule. I am more convinced than ever that the entire GAA calendar needs to be completely restructured from top to bottom. Forget about when the National League is normally played, or when the All-Ireland final is traditionally held, we need to look at things objectively and come up with a calendar that actually works. Unfortunately, the blank canvas motion was defeated two weeks ago, so there’s a very real possibility that players are facing into another 12-month season in 2019 with no breaks and no time off before the next campaign. Simply put, this is totally unacceptable and players have had enough. It is fundamentally wrong to ask players to train and play the whole year round. This isn’t players kicking up a fuss over something minor; this is a major player welfare issue and it has to be taken seriously. With no help imminent from Croke Park, something needs to be done at a local level. As it stands, the Club Championship, County League and County Championship are all running efficiently. Players don’t seem to have any issues whatsoever with these competitions. For clubs in this part of the world, the problems lie with the two East Kerry tournaments at either end of the calendar.
Super League
The Super League, which takes place at the start of the year, is not popular amongst players, with many labelling it a series of “glorified challenge games”. The feeling locally is that the Super League is merely taking up weekends that could be used for more important tournaments. If players are to get an appropriate break in 2019, scrapping the Super League will have to be part of the solution. The O’Donoghue Cup is a very prestigious tourna-
ment and the feedback from players is that they have a lot of respect for it. It’s a trophy that players from every club in the district would love to win. The problem here lies in the timing: the tournament regularly runs well into December and this year’s final will not be held until December 22. While the players I spoke to were quick to acknowledge that Dr Crokes advancing to the Munster Club Championship made things difficult for the Board, they also felt that there were plenty of opportunities to play more games earlier in the year. Midweek games is a suggestion that I have heard time and time again in recent weeks and personally I see no reason why this cannot work; midweek games have been successfully implemented elsewhere in the country and players in Kerry seem to be in favour of bringing them in.
Making changes
Players do not want to play in December. That’s universal. As it stands, you cannot plan to play the O’Donoghue Cup in November because there is a strong possibility that at least one team from East Kerry will win the Kerry SFC, IFC or JFC and so progress to Munster. The County Championship runs in September and October (although there should also be time to play the semi-final and final of the EK Championship, even if Kerry win the All-Ireland). The Club Championship is played in April. So, if the beginning of the O’Donoghue Cup is to be moved, it has to be moved to either the start of the year or the summer. The problem with the latter is that Kerry are unlikely to release their players once the Munster Championship starts in June. Playing midweek games during the month of May (in between County League games) could also work. But for me, the best option – albeit a radical one – is to
play the group phase of a new-look East Kerry Championship in January, before the Kerry seniors start their National League campaign. In the proposed schedule on p2, four January dates are identified but nine of the 13 teams would only need to play two games. The other four teams would play three times. Clubs might be reluctant to play in such an important competition at the start of the year but, as it stands, no one wants to play in December either. An argument might be made that pitches are poor in January, but are they better or worse in December after they have been subjected to 12 months of football? If the proposed schedule below took effect the vast majority of pitches would be more or less idle in November and December anyway, giving pitches a much-needed rest before the new campaign kicks off. I think this schedule could work. And it is based on the “worst” case scenario as far as fixtures are concerned, i.e. Kerry getting to the All-Ireland and the same team(s) from East Kerry getting to the Kerry SFC final, O’Donoghue Cup final, Munster final and County League final. Even if you take it to extremes and imagine a year when Kerry win the All-Ireland, a team from East Kerry wins the county final after a replay and also gets to the Munster final and the County League final, and that team is also in the O’Donoghue Cup final, 11 of the 13 clubs in East Kerry would still be finished in October, leaving them free for the months of November and December. The other two teams could be finished in the first or second week of December. And that’s if everything goes pear-shaped as far fixtures are concerned. It might not be perfect but if this proposed schedule shows us anything, it’s that giving players an appropriate break is actually possible.
What do you think? Is this schedule workable? Are there better options available? Let us know today by emailing sport@killarneyadvertiser.ie or tweeting @AdamMoynihan or @AdvertiserSport.

Crokes capture league and championship double Eamonn Fitzgerald Lewis Road
Dr Crokes added the County League title to the Kerry SFC in a thriller at Lewis Road on Sunday last. Final score after extra time was Crokes 2-20 Kerin’s O Rahilly’s 3-12. After so many runaway wins on the Munster trail it was refreshing and informative that Crokes can withstand fierce pressure. What is more remarkable is that they were down to 14 men after eight minutes when team captain John Payne was sent off for a foul on Jack Savage. A few minutes later, team boss Pat O Shea was sent off also. The selectors made a great decision to move Brian Looney back to wing back to shore up the defence and he gave a Man of the Match display. Also noteworthy were great displays by Johnny Buckley, Micheál Burns and veterans Eoin Brosnan as well as Colm Cooper. It was tight at the break with Crokes just one point ahead, 2-6 to 2-5. Great saves by Shane Murphy and some vintage forward play put Crokes well ahead 2-13 to 2-6 with nine minutes remaining. Crokes did not kill them off, however, and the Strand Road men stormed back into contention to tie up the scores by fulltime. Who had the legs and the will to win in extra time? Dr Crokes stormed to victory completing the league and championship double in the style to which they are accustomed.

A Season of Sundays 2018
21 years on the go and A Season of Sundays 2018 continues to provide a pictorial a la carte menu, capturing the essence of the GAA games over the past year. The winning formula has been the same throughout the years: splendid photographs captured by the Sportsfile photographers featuring the highs and lows of GAA games, but also the shots of empty stadia except for groundsmen, gardaí, caretakers and a lone soul on the pitch before all the fans arrive. Seán McGrath uses a golf buggy to set up the field as the McGrath Cup makes a rare visit to the Gold Coast Golf resort near Dungarvan. The Sportsfile team of photographers are always looking for the unusual picture to tell its story and they get it in Enniscorthy on January 18 with a scoreline rarely seen these days. Eoin O’Brien, Colm Basquel and Kevin Callaghan trudge off the field after Dublin were pipped by Wexford in the McGrath Cup and the scoreboard tells its own story. Wexford 1-12 Dublin 0-14. Cassie Melly (age 3) from the Rosses makes her way along the main stand in Killarney showcasing the best of Donegal design while Clare’s David McInerney poses with 8-year-old Seán Brew whose father is taking the picture for posterity. Yes, plenty to choose from and it’s still only January. All-Ireland senior football and hurling champions Dublin and Limerick get plenty of coverage. The front cover will evoke great memories for the Limerick hurlers.
Spectacular
There is a spectacular aerial shot of Galway football captain Damien Comer claiming the ball one-handed in mid-air. Kerry’s Jason Foley is barely getting off the ground. My own favourite is on page 27 where Armagh goalkeeper Blaine Hughes risks life and limb diving on the boot of Robbie Smyth, while Brendan Donaghy tests the fabric of the Longford jersey. Penalty to Longford, which they convert. But they still lost the game. It is still only February for these shots. There is a very evocative picture taken at the end of the Clare v Tipp SHC match where Clare captain Patrick O’Connor and Tipperary’s Séamus Callanan are on bended knees congratulating and commiserating with each other after an absorbing duel. Kerry forwards Stephen O’Brien and David Clifford congratulate each other after scoring a goal against Cork. Michael Murphy and Paddy McBrearty hug each other after their Ulster final victory over Fermanagh. Kerry’s David Clifford is in celebratory mood after scoring that late goal against Monaghan. A Limerick hurling sub is pictured in mid-air after scoring a goal. Eamonn Fitzmaurice seems down and out at the end of his 6 years in charge of Kerry. Sponsor JP McManus joins the Limerick hurlers in the dressing room after their great win.
Crokes and local minor Mikey Lenihan is pictured coming out of the shadows in the All-Ireland fivein-a-row win and his teammates spread out their fingers for that magical five. Brian Fenton is in prayerful mode after another All-Ireland win for Dublin. There are some great pics of the winning Cork camogie team in action before they secure the cup. In ladies football there is an attendance of 50,041, a record.

Bryan Sheehan joined Mary’s club mate Austin Constable by winning his 11th South Kerry Championship on Saturday last. Here in East Kerry Eoin Brosnan and Colm Cooper also have 11 medals, but there is no one to touch Shane O’Sullivan of Laune Rangers who has 17 Mid Kerry medals. Congratulations to Beaufort who won the Munster JFC final by an all important point in Mallow on Sunday last.

Another road win for Killarney Munster Junior League Div 3 Killarney 16-11 Bantry Killarney RFC eked out another impressive victory away to Bantry last weekend as a try from Paul O’Sullivan and some quality kicking from Oisín O’Shea helped them to a hard-fought five-point win. Hillary McCarthy put in a Man of the Match display in his first start of the season. The result leaves Killarney second in the Munster Junior League Division 3, five points behind Tralee with a game in hand.

When Séamus Brosnan’s shot from the corner bounced, rattled and finally rolled through the hoop as the final buzzer sounded, the Auracle erupted. Fans jumped for joy, kids streamed onto the floor and ecstatic Lakers players swarmed around their hero. Brosnan’s last gasp three had sealed a one-point victory for the hosts. But hometown MC Botty O’Callaghan had bad news for his fellow Killarney men and women. “Two points! Two points!” he shouted above the din. “The game is going to overtime! Sit down!” True enough, one of the refs was standing at half court very deliberately signalling a two-pointer to the scorers’ table. The tip of Brosnan’s toe was on the line so his match-winning three was, in fact, an extremely long, match-tying two. Celebrations cut short, it was time for the Lakers to regroup for overtime. Tensions were running high at the end of a frantic cup match that had spectators on the edge of their seats. The visiting Celtics were perhaps the better team on the balance of play but the Lakers showed great fighting spirit to stay in contention. Limerick’s supremely talented playmaker Turrell Morris have edged the Battle of the Americans in the first 35 minutes or so but Seán O’Brien really came up big for the Lakers down the stretch. With 3:14 to play, the dynamic guard channelled Nick Foles to pick out Dailian Mason with a pinpoint, full-court pass and the Englishman duly applied the finish to put the Lakers ahead by two. The Celtics equalised shortly after but O’Brien
came straight back up the floor and buried a vital three-pointer to send the home crowd wild. Moments later, O’Brien added another couple when he drove down the lane and put up a beautiful floater that evaded the long arms of the onrushing bigs. The hosts led by five with 90 seconds on the clock but the Celtics weren’t done yet. Spaniards Alvaro Martinez and Fabio Hernandez stepped up with a couple of tough baskets and when the latter coasted through a flat-footed Lakers defence to drop in an easy deuce, the Celtics led by one. Cormac O’Donoghue called a time-out with 23 seconds to go and as his troops headed out for the final scene, Limerick’s coach called a second time-out in an apparent attempt at mind games. They must have worked. Hearts sank around the arena as the Lakers turned the ball over with a sloppy play in the next possession and the game appeared to be over. All Limerick had to do was keep the ball and draw a foul. The visitors safely inbounded the ball to Fabio Hernandez near their own baseline but the Lakers cleverly deployed a trap, forcing the panicked Celtics player to twist and turn to try to find a way out. As he pivoted, he stepped on the line and the Lakers were handed a lifeline. But a missed shot and a defensive rebound later, they were back to square one. They were left with no option but to intentionally foul Morris and send him to the line with 4.5 seconds left. Morris missed the first but made the second and the Lakers needed a miracle. In the end, they got it.
Sort of. Papito Hersisia inbounded to the excellent Mark Greene and the captain sprinted up the floor in search of an opening. With two seconds to go, Greene picked out Brosnan in the corner and his last ditch shot eventually fell for a dramatic equaliser. The Auracle was buzzing by now and overtime was manic as both sides tried to grasp control of this crucial cup quarter-final. Limerick started brightly but Hersisia knocked down a long three to tie it up at 75. Morris then gave the Celtics the lead with 1:55 to play and when Hernandez drilled a really pretty 15-footer, they led by four. Mark Greene kept the Lakers within touching distance when he powered through for a tough lay-up with 0:25 on the clock but, perhaps fittingly, Turrell Morris killed the game at the other end with a superb three-point play. The free throw marked his 39th point of the game on the back of a spectacular performance that will live long in the memory. There was still time for another Brosnan buzzer-beater and this corner shot was, indeed, a three-pointer, but it was too late for the Lakers. Their focus now turns to the league. MVP: Mark Greene was superb for the Lakers and Séamus Brosnan deserves huge credit for converting that high-pressure shot but Turrell Morris was the game’s outstanding player. The Columbus, Ohio, native was magnificent as he led his side to an unlikely road win against one of the top teams in the division.

3rd place Carlow ready to pounce
Séamus Brosnan is mobbed by teammates after his crucial game-tying basket againset Limerick.
National League Div 1 - Scotts Lakers v IT Carlow Sunday at 3pm (Killarney Sports Centre) blood and Sunday’s battle could well prove to be one of the most important games of the season. On the flipside, the Lakers will see this as a tremendous opportunity. Their two opponents in this weekend’s double-header are the only two teams to beat them in the league this season so some payback is on the cards, and a pair of victories would put them in an extremely strong position heading into the final third of the season. Last Saturday’s cup defeat to the Limerick Celtics will have hurt but they can make statement this weekend by giving their biggest league rivals a right good rattle. A number of recent home games ended in largely uneventful blow-out wins but the loyal home fans were treated to a thriller last weekend. With crucial league points at stake and a really good team coming to town, this one has all the makings of another Auracle classic.
V
If things go well for IT Carlow this weekend, the intimidating-looking nine-point gap to the second place Lakers could be cut to just three. The top two teams from each conference will advance to the playoffs at the end of the season and with Ballincollig dominating the south, it appears as though the rest are playing for second. It’s a huge weekend of basketball for the teams at the top. Carlow host UL (3-9) on Saturday in a game they will be expected to win while the Lakers have a tricky away tie, also on Saturday evening, against a Ballincollig side who are undefeated in the league (13-0). If the Killarney men fail to inflict upon Ballincollig their first defeat of the season, the gap between second and third could be six ahead of the crucial six-pointer at the Auracle on Sunday afternoon. If that were to transpire, Carlow would surely smell
