PAGE SIX “The children are in danger” Call for safety measures outside Fossa National School
A serious or even fatal accident is inevitable unless urgent safety measures are put in place – concerned parents and staff at one Killarney school said this week. Up to 300 pupils and their parents are regularly taking their life in their hands at drop off and pick up times as they negotiate crossing the busy N72 Killarney to Killorglin road to get to Fossa National School. They are now calling on Kerry County Council to act quickly and put safety measures – such as pedestrian crossing – in place. The issue has been ongoing for years, principal Pat Clifford explained to the Killarney Advertiser this week. “We’re highlighting this for a long time,” he said. “One pedestrian crossing would suffice. “You’re just watching there in the morning with your heart in your mouth because there are young children from the age of four onwards, and children with special needs, crossing the road. I just think the children are in danger and we’re going to keep at it until some issue occurs unfortunately - that may then force this type of facility to be put in place – but it’s too late to do it then.” He said that he’s listening to the parent’s safety concerns every day. “They’re saying it is a nightmare in the morning. There are busses, there are trucks, it’s a very busy road particularly during months from April to October as there’s a huge volume of traffic there. They have no place to park - only across
DEATHTRAP: Parents, children and staff say a pedestrian crossing is urgently needed before someone is killed or seriously injured outside Fossa National School. Pictured were: Jo Gaffey, Cllr Maura Healy-Rae, Tim Coffey, Mairead O’Connor, Pat Clifford (Principal), Linda O’Donoghue, Catherine McCarthy with school childfren Saoirse Coffey, Tara O’Sullivan, Michelle Moynihan, Thomas O’Shaughnessy and James O’Meara.
the other side of the road.” The school population currently stands at 270, he explained. However, when there was half that number they had a lollypop lady at the school. “When there was half, about 135 pupils, we had a dedicated lollypop person who used to help children across the road. Why that’s gone – I think the issue is other schools were in an old scheme, like Lissivigeen and other places, and unfortunately as we’re not in that scheme that they don’t allow that now. It’s unfair to the children and it’s certainly compromising their safety.”
Cllr. Maura Healy-Rae, who raised the issue at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting, said that it is an issue that needs to be addressed immediately before a serious or even fatal accident occurs. “It is a national road and there’s huge traffic coming into the town to Liebherr, the town itself, the caravan park, hotels and there’s a church there too,” she said. “It’s a highly populated area. If you’re a young person trying to navigate the road it’s dangerous. A pedestrian crossing is definitely needed – that would mean that they’re crossing at the same
point and not at different sections of the road. “I’m amazed there hasn’t been an accident to date. They’re wide open and exposed here.” Kerry County Council replied that they have carried out a Pedestrian Survey at this location and that it indicated that a pedestrian crossing was “not generally justified”. However Kerry County Council said that it will work with the school and its Board of Management to ensure, as reasonably practical, the safety of all road users at this location.
Killarney town third cleanest in IBAL Litter League Killarney town is ‘cleaner than European norms’ and ranked the third cleanest town out of 40 towns and cities – according to the results of the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) this week. An Taisce, who carry out the surveys on behalf of IBAL, commented in its Killarney report: “An outstanding performance by one of the country’s busiest tourist attractions. Some top ranking sites deserve a special mention e.g. the Recycle Facility was excellent, (rare for such facilities generally); the Main Street wasn’t just very good with regard to litter but overall presentation e.g. paving, seating, bollards etc.; the same applied to the Jarvey Park – this was a very attractively presented and maintained environment. Some of the bins in Killarney provided the opportunity for ‘dry recycling’ and this is a very welcome feature.” The overall result for Killarney is tremendous testament to the hard working,
CLEAN TOWN: Killarney town was named third cleanest out of 40 towns and cities in the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) this week. dedicated, enthusiastic Municipal staff and the large number of litter-picking volunteers that keep our town to such a high standard of cleanliness, John-
ny McGuire from Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce explained this week. “Out of a total of 10 sites adjudicated,
Killarney received seven Grade As but unfortunately received three Grade Bs. The main cause of these negative comments were coffee cups, plastic bottle, sweet wrappers and fast food wrappers; all food related items which are the root cause of Killarney losing out on achieving 10 straight As.” He added that the judging for the IBAL results in 2019 will take place between now and June. “We would ask everyone in the Killarney area to be more vigilant with the removal of litter and if anyone would like to adopt an area for litter control, please contact Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce on 064 6637928. Once again, well done and congratulations to everyone in team Killarney for such a fantastic result.” As runners-up, Killarney will receive a number of Norway maple trees to enhance the local environment, courtesy of the Irish Tree Centre in Cork.

Over €350k funding announced for outdoor recreation in Kerry €362,463 has been secured this week for outdoor recreation projects in Kerry. The funding, provided under Measure 2 of the 2018 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, is part of the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development and provides funding for the development of new outdoor recreational infrastructure. Mayor of Killarney, Cllr John Sheahan this week welcomed the announcement of €160,000 for improvements to parking access at a number of the trails on the Kenmare Road. These include some of the most popular walks in Killarney at Dinis and Cardiac Steps. This application was submitted in association with the NPWS. “This announcement is particularly welcome given the huge numbers we have seen out and active over the Christmas period,” he said. “There is significantly more investment needed at these locations but this is a great start to the year.” Other funding announced includes €103,798 for the restoration and maintenance of Upper Stricken Trail on the MacGillycuddy Reeks and €98,665 upgrade of walkway on the Cockleshell Road in Tralee.

€15m stash doesn’t exist – councillors told
There’s no €12m or €15m stash of cash in a special account, the Killarney Municipal meeting was told this week, after a query by councillor Donal O’Grady. However, exactly how much Killarney has in a special account attached to Aras an Chontae coffers since its last €13.5m budget in 2013/14 will be detailed at the next council meeting. Cllr O’Grady had called for some of the money to be used for parking and other congestion issues. Angela McAllen the finance director of the County Council and Killarney Town Manager said at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting in the Town Hall that the town councils had come over with “some funds” but also with liabilities. “All funds that remain are committed and ring-fenced for Killarney”, she said. “There is absolutely no €12m,” she said.
International recognition for Kerry beauty spot Rebranding one picturesque Kerry location is reaping rewards as it was this week named one of the ‘Best Places to Visit in 2019’ by one of the world’s leading travel guidebooks. Rough Guides, which compiles an annual list of the holiday hotspots to excite esteemed travel guide authors for the coming year, named The Reeks District as number three in the lists ‘6 Regions on our Radar’ - which could potentially bring thousands of extra tourists to the region. Formerly known for tourism purposes as Mid Kerry, the region has been dubbed ‘Ireland’s Adventure Playground’ and was praised by authors for its “postcard scenery of rugged landscapes” and the chance to take part in activities such as walking, hiking, biking, climbing, kayaking and surfing, all in close proximity to each other. The Reeks District, which was re-branded early in 2018 by local tourism membership organisation the Mid Kerry Tourism Cluster to highlight its strong outdoors and adventure proposition, stretches around Castlemaine Harbour from Inch Beach to Rossbeigh Strand, and includes the MacGillycuddys Reeks. Rough Guides’ authors chose summiting Carrauntoohil as a “literal highlight” of a visit while also praising Caragh Lake for its beauty.
Pedestriansation
The Rough Guides entry also extoled the Reeks as “part of a modern Ireland of trendy coffee shops, young designers and boutique B&Bs” that manages to retain a “traditional Irish welcome, musical pubs and hearty fare”. “We are both astounded and delighted to have been selected as one of Rough Guides ‘Best Places to Visit for 2019’,” Jens Bachem, Chair of the Mid Kerry Tourism Cluster, said. “We always thought the Reeks District had much more to offer visitors and we are proud to be reaping the first rewards of our re-branding of this magnificent region.” Funding of the Reeks District is achieved by a mixture of grants and three levels of membership fee: Gold, Silver and Bronze. “We could not have achieved what we have so far without the moral and financial support of our members,” he added. “The Mid Kerry Tourism Cluster believes promotion of our region’s tourism offering is far stronger when we work together. We appeal for any businesses wishing to become members, or looking to upgrade their membership, to get in touch with us.” See www.roughguides.com/best-places-totravel/the-rough-guide-to-2019/ for more information or www.reeksdistrict.com.
Calls to review Plunkett Street pedestrianisation BY ANNE LUCEY
Killarney town is lagging behind its European and many Irish counterparts due to lack of a day time pedestrianised area – Killarney Municipal District meeting was told on Wednesday. The meeting, held in the Town Hall, heard that ‘it was a sad day if not even one street could be pedestrianised in Killarney town’ and that the town was ‘now out of step with the most attractive European and Irish holiday destinations’. Plunkett Street was pedestrianised from 7pm to 7am on a trial basis in the summer, and the meeting heard calls for a review of this. “We are the only place not to have pedestrianisation,” Cllr Brendan Cronin, comparing Killarney to major tourist destinations such as Galway and Kilkenny, said.
Cllr Niall Kelleher added that day time pedestrianisation is what he has been calling for. “There’s a lot of positives with pedestrianisation,” he said. Cllr John Joe Culloty said it was “a sad day” that even one street could not be pedestrianised. However, Cllr Maura Healy-Rae asked if management had met with “concerned business owners” particularly following the trial pedestrianisation of Plunkett Street. She was told management had met with a new retail grouping in the town on traffic issues and there would be public consultation on the trial pedestrianisation of the street in the next weeks. Cllr Donal Grady said he would vote against pedestrianisation.

TOWNTALK Traffic congestion top of the agenda – says Council BY ANNE LUCEY
gaged in industrial, commercial and retail activity, as well as the residents of the town,” he said. He asked for a tiered pricing strategy to maximise efficiency on car parks to ensure greater turnover in the central car parks. The congestion was giving the impression the town was full - when it was not, Niamh added. “Killarney is suffering when it is perceived to be full and it is not,” said Fianna Fail Councillor Niall Kelleher, former Mayor of Killarney who invited the delegation to the meeting. “The old song asks “how can you buy Killarney?”, but if this continues then very soon the question that might be asked is “how can you buy into Killarney?” because customers won’t be able to get access to shops due to chronic congestion and seriously inadequate parking facilities.” The big danger was they would take their business elsewhere, he said. Killarney paid the most of any Kerry town into local government in rates in Kerry, and it also paid the highest share in terms of taxes to National Government, councillors said. “We are not getting our fair share (back),” Cllr John Joe Culloty said. He urged Kerry TDs to work as hard as they could “and make as much noise as they can” to get roads funding for Killarney. Killarney Town Manager, Angela McAllen said Killarney traffic was discussed at every single meeting and was a top priority for management. “It is top of our agenda,” Ms McAllen said. “We are constantly looking for land to develop car parking as it is a priority,” she said, adding there would be extra signage to indicate private car parks this year.
Kerry rescuers featured on national TV Brave members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team featured on a brand new television series this week. Tuesday night’s “Rescue - River Deep, Mountain High” on Virgin Media One showed how the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, National Ambulance Service and the Irish Coast Guard helicopter come to the aid of a 22 year-old climber who had fallen 75 feet and hit a boulder, in the Gap of Dunloe. The climber did regain consciousness but needed to be taken to hospital fast as he had broken several bones and his pelvis. He was winched 200 feet into the air on a stretcher to the hovering helicopter above. Interviews with

After that there will be the acquisition of lands and works will be carried out in 2020. • Traffic studies to strengthen the case for the Muckross-Lissivigeen link. An application has been submitted under the urban regeneration fund for feasibility and design. • Land negotiations are still ongoing for the construction of the inner relief road from Monsignor O’Flaherty Road to New Street. • The first of two companies to replace the antiquated parking machines and allow for paying by card as well as cash has been awarded the tender and this will begin in about 12 weeks. • A multi-storey for Lewis Road will be assessed as part of the Aras Phádraig site master plan • The long awaited Muckross Road to Ross Road cycleway is now “shovel ready” and funding has been applied for under the urban regeneration fund. • In reply to a motion by Brendan Cronin that the free Cathedral car park needed to be properly laid out to maximise existing car space, as it was very disorganised and dangerous, the Council said it is in discussion with St Brendan’s Trust, the owners. Cllr John Sheahan raised the question of the Council buying it from the trust which is the property arm of the diocese of Kerry, and was told discussions are underway.

A 10 percent increase in car spaces with the opening of Rock Road car park in May is welcome - but it will not be enough - councillors and officials were told this week. The 190 space car park is one of a number of measures outlined by Killarney manager Angela McAllen in response to a strong submission by the town’s leading hotel and chamber bodies. Killarney Tourism was ‘the economic lifeblood of the entire south west region’, the Killarney Municipal District meeting held in the Town Hall on Wednesday, heard. People from all over the world wanted to visit Killarney and visitor satisfaction ratings were higher than for anywhere else - apart from traffic. 1.4 million tourists would arrive each year by 2025 bringing earnings of €600m. “The chronic problem of traffic congestion in Killarney has to be tackled as a matter of urgency,” Niamh O’Shea, Chairperson of the Irish Hotels Federation in Kerry, said. The industry had “huge potential” but the public transport infrastructure was not in place and had not kept pace, she told the meeting. “Killarney’s tourism future is too important to leave to chance. Tourism needs to be industry led - and local Government enabled,” she urged. The long promised Lissivigeen/Muckross link road was “vital”, alongside the Farranfore to Lissivigeen outer bypass, Paul O’Neill of the Chamber of Tourism and Commerce explained. He said locals and business outside of tourism were enduring “a daily challenge”. “Beyond the tourism sector, congestion is a very real daily challenge for many of our members who are en-

• The N22 Farranfore to Killarney outer bypass is undergoing project appraisal. • Pedestrian crossings, with regard to night time visibility, are being reviewed following a motion by Cllr Michael Gleeson highlighting the Countess/Park Road/Deer Park Junction situation. key rescue volunteers and the casualty gave an in depth view of what happened, while aerial footage illustrated this spectacular region in Killarney National Park. The programme is an 8-part series for Virgin 1/ITV, following the exploits of volunteer rescue services in Ireland and the UK from Mountain Rescue teams to Coast Guard and Marine and River Rescue units.

Further deer cull planned at Killarney National Park

One Killarney group plan to get locals into shape later this month with the return of their annual fitness programme. Killarney Valley Athletic Club, who launched their ‘Fit for Life’ programme in St Brendan’s College Gym on Monday night, aim to help those seeking a healthier lifestyle to achieve their own personal fitness goals. The programme begins on January 23 at 7pm from the St Brendan’s College Gym with existing participants and new members invited to come along. “The ‘Fit for Life’ group in the club and community has been on the go now for the last three years,” Jerry Griffin, from Killarney Valley AC, said. “There are those in the group from the very beginning who have enjoyed great health and fitness since. We have a few mottos, with one of encouragement for all no matter what your level walker or jogger, that “nobody gets left behind!” “We follow a plan of micro steps and consistency! Once a week we are your mentors and team mates. “We believe in three months from now you will thank yourself and no matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everybody on the couch!” He added that there are times when a person gets into a rut, what with diet, weight or simply having the blues. “With a positive get up and go, a welcome to a group or your very own personal kick up the arse strategy, you can benefit enormously,” he said. Registration takes place in the Sem Hall on January 7, 14 and 21, at 7pm, or from 6.30-7pm on Wednesday January 23. He added that participants must be over 18 and that you’ll become a member of Killarney Valley AC, receive a club T-shirt, mentoring and guidance, become fit and healthy as well as enjoy being part of a social group. Walkers will be led by John O’Shea and Jean Courtney, runners/walkers will be led by Catriona Shanahan and Jerry Griffin, and after 12 weeks the group will take part in the Killarney Parkrun at Muckross Gardens. “Complete the distance of 5k whether you run or walk and enjoy the “craic” along the way! “Leaving the last word and famous quote to our very own Killarney Canadian Olympian Peter Maher, you got to ask yourself – ‘Are you going to be a wimp or are going to be strong today?’,” he added. “Regardless, we would be honoured to assist you in your own personal challenge.”
More than 120 deer have been culled since January 2018 - and a further cull will commence in the New Year - according to the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The cull in Killarney last year commenced on foot of reports and surveys of the deer population, and was carried out by trained, experienced and dedicated National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) staff in a professional manner based upon scientific research. According to the Department, the cull was decided upon following consultation with National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) professional staff, including scientific input as required. Shooting of deer in the park is carried out only by NPWS professional staff members, who are fully trained, competent, expert and licenced in the use of firearms. The selection of deer shot is in accordance with normal deer management protocols and the deer are shot humanely by qualified NPWS marksmen. The remains are processed and disposed of in full compliance with the applicable Department of Agriculture guidelines, and with the involvement, as appropriate, of Department of Agriculture officials. “There is a significant challenge in attempting to balance the demands of agriculture, forestry and conservation with the need to ensure that deer populations occupying the same land resources are managed at sustainable levels, and in a responsible and ethical manner,” a spokesperson from the Department told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “Ultimately, however, where deer species are increasing in range and numbers, depending on the annual count and instances of damage caused by deer to habitats (especially woodland), culls need to be carried out to ensure that deer populations do not reach levels that would have negative ecological and species consequences.”
Property
Bayhouse was Kerry’s biggest one-off sale of 2018 The sale of Bayhouse in Feoramore, Kenmare is the largest one-off property transaction recorded in Kerry in 2018. Data from the Property Price Register, analysed by property website MyHome.ie, shows that the majestic waterfront property with views over Kenmare Bay and the Ring of Kerry sold for €725,000 in August. There are only five transactions with a higher value so far this year, including four for seven figure sums, but all are developments include Parklands on Pierse Road in Tralee, which sold for €1.9 million in February. Other large one-off sales included Beau Fort in Curragraigue, Blennerville, which sold for €638,500 in June, Ashbury Lodge on the Sneem Road in Kenmare for €595,000 in September, St Joseph’s in Woodville in Dingle, which sold for €575,000 in May and The Reeks, Gortacollopa in Fossa, which sold for €550,000 in August. As of the Property Price Register update of November 28, just over €223.3 million had been spent on property so far this year in Kerry. There were 1,344 sales recorded as of that date, which still has some way to go to surpass the total number of 1,638 transactions recorded in the county in 2017.

Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
We need an injection of fire in Kerry politics Politics in Kerry is at an extraordinary pass. For the first time in their history, the main parties, Fine Gael and Fianna Fail have failed to secure second candidates in either Tralee or Killarney. This is extraordinary. As recently as 2014 people were fighting to get on the ticket. Ten years ago blood would be spilled to get a name on the ballot. I exaggerate, of course. But I have been glancing at the book ‘Politics in the Kingdom’ and the interest and passion for local politics in this county has been, well, extraordinary. What have we witnessed in 2018? Withdrawal after withdrawal of candidates in both Tralee and Killarney; no second candidates for Fine Gael in the Kenmare area - no second candidate for Fine Gael for the Dail! A number of things have spelt the death of local politics, not least is the demise of the town councils. These should have been trimmed - not abolished. The real loss is not just the plotters but the town clerk and local staff like planners. Councillors were sitting for too long in both Killarney and Tralee and there were some right bores on both bodies, if I may say so. A more creative approach would have been to apply the guillotine, or a handicap, after two, or at most three terms, in such small town areas to prevent too much power accruing to individuals and to inject excitement and fresh thinking. That there was no gender mix on the
A number of things have spelt the death of local politics - not least is the demise of the town councils. town councils, especially Killarney, was disgraceful. Ironically, in the past five years in politics, the battle for gender has been waged and largely won. But the war has been lost: Women are simply not interested. Councils began to slip with the ending of the dual mandate whereby TDs and senators had to vacate their council seats. Speaking to Jimmy Deenihan recently he is firmly of that view too. There was a frisson in the council chamber with the direct connection to the seats of power in Dublin. So far, only the Castleisland area is of-
fering the prospect of a good fight, old style, in the upcoming local elections. I refer of course to the interesting development in the decision by Jackie Healy-Rae, the 23 year-old son of the TD Michael, to branch far from his and the family’s Kilgarvan village headquarters. The new four-seat Castleisland area, which will include former heartlands of Killarney like Gneeveguilla, is fast becoming the hottest seat in the local elections. Former TD and 67 year-old councillor Tom Fleming is sure to run -
and he has to be fancied for a seat. He has been active, is very respected, and will be welcomed back with open arms, I hear. The battle will be on between the veteran Tom from his seat in Scartaglin and the young Healy-Rae from two districts away for the Independent Fianna Fail vote. The Healy-Rae brand, carefully choreographed, and performed, will take the young fellow far - but will it be far enough? I would put no money on the young man attracting the young vote in this battle - look at Bernie Saunders in the US. Thank God for the prospect of a skirmish - we need an injection of fire in politics in Kerry. But I have to ask: Why would you want to seek to represent a local area that is not your local area? Once upon a time the essence of local politics was not personal ambition, a handy seat to get into politics to pursue a career, but fire in your belly for your own area and your own people. Then, you were not paid to shout. You did it largely out of local passion and commitment to your own place. I think the real demise came with paying local councillors. Surely, for local politics to be meaningfully local, a person should be living in the local area, should be experiencing daily the same as their constituents. Even perhaps, they should have the same kind of accent as them. Is it time for a locals only rule in politics, as in planning? Or is it too late for local politics anyway?
Heated meeting over Killarney’s traffic issues Food is the now the new religion
A new trend – ‘Meat Free Mondays’ is sweeping France. Actually it is meat and fish free Mondays which 500 celebrities have called for this January. I see in this an echo of ‘Fish on Fridays’. I have long thought food is the new religion. There is such reverence and regulations attached to the material substance. But it is all for personal benefit and lacks the added zest that the old days of abstinence conferred. Then you did it to remind yourself of the transitoriness of life, and you were supposed to give alms with the money you saved. The new Green Monday as it’s called (Lundi vert) is bringing some of the religious/ spiritual element back because it takes it outside the self-centredness thing. It is all for the good of the planet. There were very sensible rules attaching to the old Catholic and indeed Orthodox Church rites. Lent, and days of abstinence detoxed the body and none of us had too much meat on us. But of course it was a rule and so had to go, especially as it was attached to the church. I still largely keep the fish on Fridays rule as do many people . Black fasts, Lenten Fasts, fish fasts, Friday fasts, Wednesday fasts - these old dietary rules were sensible which we are now beginning to realise. Now it is Monday fasts and an opportunity for a bean feast. But a fast is a fast, and we have simply gone the long way round to get back to basics, methinks.
This will be dealt with elsewhere but the delegation led by Niall Kelleher - to his credit as mayor - led the move to collect 5,000 signatures for Lewis Road which apparently swayed Minister Ross to bump the matter up the line - which brought a more heated Killarney Municipal District meeting than usual on Wednesday - and more conflict between councillors and management than I usually see in Killarney. Killarney is not getting its fair share - whilst it contributes most of any town in Kerry both locally and nationally, the town managers were told. In the drive past Killarney by both national and local government the Golden Goose will lay for no one. That is the reality. The local councils are a loss, but to be honest Killarney Town Council sat on its hands for 20 years on the need for a multi-storey. But the Kerry TDs do not appear to be shouting enough on such an important matter. Again I go back to the lack of a local Killarney TD. Is there no-one? Surely though they all have to be aware of Killarney’s traffic problems.

Fundraising
€730 raised for Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone A donation of €730 from a fundraising ceili will go towards funding specialist Motor Neurone Disease care in Kerry. Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone were delighted to accept a cheque for €730 from Elizabeth and Peggy Kelleher on behalf of TJ Nelligan at the Heights Hotel Killarney, recently. The proceeds came from a ceili organised by TJ on Sunday September 23 last at An Riocht Athletic Club, Christy Lehane, Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone, explained. “The money raised will go towards funding specialist Motor Neurone Disease nurses and providing specialist medical equipment thus enabling Motor Neurone sufferers to spend the end of life in the comfort and dignity of their own homes,” Christy told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “Kerry has the highest number of MND patients per capita in the country. Fundraising is still very necessary as 86 percent of the annual income of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) still relies on fundraising.” The Kelleher family and Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone added that they want to thank TJ for again organising this fundraising event and creating awareness of Motor Neurone Disease. “Thanks to all the dancers who turned up for the ceili and those generous people who could not attend but donated.” he said. “Thanks to An Riocht Athletic Club for providing their center for the ceili, band ‘Ui Bhriain’ – John and Martina who played exceptional music and guaranteed that everybody had a great evening, while not forgetting the good people who organised the tea and cakes.”

2019 Credit Union Schools Quiz fuelled by the ‘Power of Four’ Killarney Credit Union is urging schoolchildren in the South Kerry area to start forming their quiz teams now - and show what they can achieve with the ‘Power of Four’. The local credit union has launched its annual search for local quiz whizzes who have what it takes to get to the national final of the Credit Union Schools Quiz. Each year around 25,000 schoolchildren take part in the quiz, which is now in its 28th year. The heat is really on this year following 2018’s nerve-wracking national final. All primary schools in the South Kerry area are welcome to contact the credit union and register for the 2019 Schools Quiz, Karena McCarthy, Marketing Officer, Killarney Credit Union, explained. The quiz is divided into two sections; Competition A for children up to 11 years and Competition B for children between 11 and 13 years. “The quiz begins with a knock-out stage at local level, taking place in the INEC, Killarney on February 3, which is organised by Killarney Credit Union,” she said. “There will be some fantastic prizes for the winning teams-of-four, who will also progress to the regional knockout stage in early March.” The winning teams from that gruelling
competition will make it through to the Grand Final at the RDS, Dublin, on Sunday April 7, where they will really have an opportunity to let the ‘Power of Four’ shine! The winning teams at the national finals will receive €1,250 per school, runner-up teams in each category receive €750 for their schools, adding up to a fantastic prize fund of €4,000. Local and regional winners will also receive a range of prizes. “We have themed the quiz ‘The Power of Four’ this year to really encourage local children to work together and see what they are capable of achieving as part of a team. We see the annual quiz as a fantastic opportunity for schools in the South Kerry area to nurture a culture of partnership among students, and we would really encourage all schools to get registered for the 2019 event. A core focus of this event is to encourage learning as part of a team to help equip children from a young age with the skills necessary for successful teamwork in the workplace. “Questions will cover a wide range of topics including geography, history, music, literature and sport, and we have no doubt that all of our budding geniuses in the South Kerry area will rise to the challenge. We are delighted to have a local school Gaelscoil Faithleann
progressing to national level in the past few years and we would like to wish all our schools the best of luck,” she said. Registration for the 2019 Schools Quiz is
now open and local schools will receive an entry form. Further information is available from Karena McCarthy in Killarney Credit Union on 064-6631344.

Radio Kerry to acquire Clare FM and Tipp FM
The Board of Radio Kerry has approved an offer to the shareholders of Clare Community Radio Holdings Ltd., to purchase the entire share capital of the company, Clare FM. It has also made an offer for Clare FM’s controlling interest in Tipp FM. The Board of Clare FM are recommending acceptance of the offer to their shareholders. Both offers are subject to shareholder and regulatory approval in early 2019. Radio Kerry, Clare FM and Tipp FM have forged a close working relationship in the Independent Radio sector over the years and work together on industry bodies such as IBI, IRS and Learning Waves. The stations also share the same local ethos and have similar programme schedules. “The decision is being made to be proactively involved in the future development of the radio and media industry in Ireland and to create new opportunities for staff, advertisers and listeners,” Paul Byrne, Radio Kerry CEO, said. Radio Kerry Chairman, Tim O’Keeffe said that the
shareholders and management team at Radio Kerry have common objectives as Clare FM and Tipp FM in protecting and promoting the local radio sector. “It is the belief of all involved that this would strengthen and secure the future of all stations involved.” Radio Kerry was established in 1990 and is headquartered in Tralee. It also owns Shannonside and Northern Sound Radio Stations - which broadcast to Longford, Roscommon, Leitrim, Cavan and Monaghan. Liam O’Shea MD of Clare FM & Tipp FM added that the counties share the same pride of place, love of sports, music and culture. “The reality of the modern media environment is that in order to secure their business future I strongly believe that radio stations must consider shared costs and consolidation with other similar companies,” he said. Radio Kerry previously purchased Shannonside/ Northern Sound Radio in 2005.
Conference
Brexit to dominate next week’s Killarney Economic Conference Former Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, will deliver the opening address and share his thoughts on Brexit at next week’s Killarney Economic Conference. Taking place on Thursday and Friday next, January 17 and 18, at The Brehon/INEC complex in Killarney, the event is a highly anticipated gathering of economic, civic and political leaders, from Britain and Ireland. The conference will begin at lunchtime on Thursday, January 17 with a half-day forum followed by dinner that evening. On Friday, January 18 the debates and discussions continue for a full day conference. It is 12 months since DUP leader, Arlene Foster, made the symbolic and conciliatory gesture of addressing the inaugural Killarney Economic Conference, but one year on, the Irish border backstop remains the key issue in the Brexit withdrawal process. This is aptly timed with the UK parliament poised to vote on Theresa May’s withdrawal deal that same week. The outcome, impact and implications of that vote will be discussed by the expert panel of speakers, drawn from business, academia and politics. Specific topics for discussion include an exploration of the legal issues raised by Brexit, building a collaborative and open political future, the challenges posed to businesses and how to respond and the regulatory fall-out in banking and finance. “Our conference this year takes place in a critical and historic week and there is still so much uncertainty,” Dr William Sheehan, conference organiser and historian, said. “Our goal is to bring some light to the way ahead for businesses and organisations and, given the calibre of our speakers, I know we will do that.” The full list of speakers for the Killarney Economic Conference 2019 includes Bertie Ahern, former Taoiseach; Mark Kennedy, Mazars; Ed Sibley, Central Bank; Prof. Eilis Ferran, University of Cambridge; Dr. Stephen Kinsella, University of Limerick; Prof. Ursula Kilkelly, UCC; Dr. Georges
Baur, ex-EFTA, Liechtenstein Institute; Prof. Catherine Barnard, University of Cambridge; Dr. Holger Hestermeyer, Kings College London; Dr. William Sheehan, Conference Organiser; David Clarke, Scottish Irish Finance Initiative; Mícheál Ó hÉanaigh, Údarás na Gaeltachta; Ruth McCarthy, Fexco Corporate Payments; Moira Murrell, Kerry County Council; Dr. Mary C. Murphy, University College Cork; Prof. Brigid Laffan, European University Institute; Henry Newman, Open Europe; Dr. Edward Burke, University of Nottingham; Denis McShane, UK Labour; Mark Hennessy, The Irish Times; Doug Beattie, Ulster Unionist Party; John McGrane, British Irish Chamber of Commerce; Lisa Chambers, Fianna Fáil; Lucinda Creighton, Vulcan Consulting; Dr. Simon Kingston, British Irish Association; Peter Bellew, COO, Ryanair; Dr. Orla Flynn, Cork Institute of Technology; Michael Russell MSP, Scottish Government and Micheál Martin, Leader, Fianna Fáil. The combined gala dinner and full day conference tickets costs €295. The conference ticket costs €250 and the gala dinner costs €80. Discounts are available, on request, for students, NGOs and public sector employees. For more information or to book a ticket visit www.killarneyeconomicconference.com.

Call for a statue of the Colleen Bawn in Killarney
There have been calls for a statue of the Colleen Bawn to be erected in Killarney town as this July marks the 200th anniversary of her death. The new issue of ‘History Ireland’, which hit the shops last week, contains an article by Robert Whelan calling for a statue to be erected in Killarney in memory of Ellie Hanley, the original Collen Bawn, whose tragic story did so much to promote tourism in the town. Ellie was a beautiful 15 year-old peasant girl who lived in Ballicahane, just outside Limerick. On June 29, 1819, she eloped with John Scanlan, son of the local gentry who lived at Ballicahane Castle, and was tricked into a sham marriage. Scanlan set her up in a cottage in Glin where he was a frequent visitor for hunting and fishing, so his visits there would not attract attention. After only two weeks, Scanlan tired of his pretty peasant girl and told his boatman, Stephen Sullivan, to get rid of her. On the night of July14 or 15, 1819, Sullivan took Ellie out onto the Shannon in a boat and bludgeoned her to death. On September 6, her body was washed up on the banks of the Shannon and warrants were issued for the arrest of Scanlan and Sullivan. Scanlan was found first, hiding in his parents’ castle. He was charged with murder, found guilty and hanged, protesting his innocence. Daniel O’Connell, who defended him, was convinced of his guilt. A few weeks later Sullivan was caught, tried and found guilty. After sentencing he confessed that he had murdered Ellie on Scanlan’s orders. Gerald Griffin had grown up in Limerick and was the same age as Ellie Hanley. In 1829, ten years after the murder and when he was still only 25, he published ‘The Collegians’, a novel which used the events of
Maeve Smyth as Eily O’Connor and Bryan Quinn as Myles-na-Coppaleen in Dion Boucicault’s The Colleen Bawn. Lyric Theatre Belfast, 2018. Pic: Stefan Hill.
the murder but expanded the story. John Scanlan became Hardress Cregan who really loves the Colleen (here called Eily O’Connor) and really was married to her. He is under pressure from his domineering mother to marry an heiress called Anne Chute. He dare not tell his mother he is married already so he agrees to a period of courtship in the family’s summer home, Dinis Cottage, on the edge of the Lakes of Killarney. His faithful boatman – here called Danny Mann promises to take care of the situation and he murders Eily.
Thirty years after the publication of ‘The Collegians’, the Irish playwright Dion Boucicault turned the story into a play called ‘The Colleen Bawn’, starring his wife Agnes Robertson as Eily and himself as the loveable rogue Myles-na-Coppaleen who saves the Colleen from the dastardly boatman Danny Mann. Boucicault’s play has a happy ending. Boucicault made many changes to the events of the novel, including moving the whole of the action to Killarney so that audiences could see the beautiful scenery of the Lakes. Queen Victoria went to see ‘The Colleen Bawn’ three times in the early months of 1861 and commissioned a set of watercolours of its scenes, making it one of the best-recorded productions of the era. It was the last play she saw in public as Prince Albert died later in the year and she never went to a theatre again. In August 1861 Queen Victoria made her third visit to Ireland. On previous visits she had stuck to the big cities but on this occasions she spent three days in Killarney. Robert Whelan argues in his ‘History Ireland’ article that this detour was the result of seeing ‘The Colleen Bawn’ on the stage in London earlier in the year. The Queen’s visit took tourism in Killarney to a new level as her subjects, accustomed to travelling to the Lake District in Cumbria for mountains and lakes, began to think in terms of Killarney as an alternative. Robert Whelan concludes his article by calling for a statue of Ellie Hanley to be erected in Killarney. “Ellie grew up in Limerick and never set eyes on Killarney, but she deserves to be remembered in the town for which she did so much,” he said.

Night of film culture planned in Beaufort Not only will one film night provide entertainment - but also some culture - as Beaufort Film Night returns next week. The night’s programme will begin with a screening of ‘Wave’, a multi award-winning short film, followed by French culture-clash comedy ‘Untouchable’ (French: Intouchables), at The Inn Between Bar on Friday, January 18, at 8.30pm. ‘Wave’, is based on a man who wakes from a coma speaking a fully formed but unrecognisable language. It was winner of the Best Irish Short at the OFFline Film Festival and won the IFTA for Best Live Action Short. ‘Wave’ was longlisted in the Live Action Short Film category at the 90th Academy Awards while the film’s Director, Benjamin Cleary, won the Best Live Action Short Oscar at the 88th Academy Awards for ‘Stutterer’. ‘Untouchable’, which is in French with English subtitles and has a 15A certificate, centers on the uplifting and unmissable story of unemployed African immigrant, Driss, who applies for a live-in carer job to get a signature to continue his social welfare payments. He unexpectedly gets the job and so begins a hilarious and heartwarming friendship with his new employer, wheelchair-bound millionaire Philippe. “This is the biggest-grossing non-English language film of all time and is the perfect antidote to the dreary month of January,” Hazel Joy, Chairperson of Beaufort Film Night, said. “Beaufort Film Night is a non-profit community organisation founded by local film enthusiasts whose aim is to screen cultural English language and international
language films, fostering an interest in and appreciation of these category of films, films which normally don’t get a general release screening in Kerry,” she said. “Films screened at Beaufort Film Night will be carefully curated in order to appeal to a general audience. Beaufort Film Night is working in conjunction with Access Cinema, the Arts Council funded organisation which assists film clubs and film nights in Ireland with
their screenings. “Beaufort Film Night would like to thank The Inn Between Bar for providing a venue for this cultural and entertainment opportunity,” she said. Admission to the film is €7 which will go towards covering the motion picture licencing fee and the newly-purchased screen. Further information can be viewed on Beaufort Film Night’s Facebook page: BeaufortFilmNight and Twitter page: @Beaufort_Film.

Kerry Airport bar and restaurant to get a new-look for the New Year
Tips on filling up the CAO form ahead of early deadline Career guidance counsellor Niamh Dwyer As many students are busy preparing for their mocks at the moment, worrying about the CAO is bound to bring extra stress - but students are urged not to worry unnecessarily. Applicants who have registered ahead of the early bird deadline of January 20 at 5.15pm will have received their CAO number and they can add/change courses up to February 1, at 5.15pm. For those who have not yet registered, you can do so on www.cao.ie and the discounted application fee of €30 applies up to the early deadline. There is a fee of €45 thereafter for those who register after that date and before the normal closing date of February 1. For students who are completely undecided at this stage - don’t worry. You can revisit your choices when the Change of Mind Facility opens on May 6 up until July 1 at 5.15pm. In the meantime, the following steps will help: • Think about the type of person you are, your interests, qualities, strengths, subjects or tasks that you enjoy. • Talk to those who know you well, such as parents, teachers, your guidance counsellor and to those who have studied the courses you are interested in. • Research the detail of the courses by checking out all the modules you will study over the duration of the course, what specialisms are available and whether work placement is included. This detail can be found on the college websites. • Check the entry requirements for the course which must be met if you are to be considered eligible. • Put your choices in genuine order of preference. This is the golden rule of filling the CAO form. Points are based on supply and demand, therefore they rise and fall every year and students won’t know the cut off points for 2019 until the first round offers are issued. It is proposed by the Department of Education to publish Leaving Cert results on Tuesday August 13, and it is suggested that the CAO Round 1 Offers will be issued to students on Friday, August 16. However, these dates are yet to be confirmed. The key tip at this stage is make sure not to miss any of the deadlines, all of which are available on www.cao.ie. There are some restricted courses which must be included before February 1, so applicants are encouraged to consult the CAO handbook to check these courses and to check with your guidance counsellor in school if you are unsure. Students applying for the Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) and Disability Access Route to Education (DARE) schemes must complete these forms by March 1, and send supporting documentation by April 1. See www.accesscollege.ie for more details of both schemes and speak to your guidance counsellor. • Niamh Dwyer is a guidance counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore and is PRO of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. The Gateway Bar and Restaurant at Kerry Airport is to get a new look for the New Year with a view to making the overall customer experience for passengers more efficient, flavoursome and memorable. Work on the four-week refurbishment is set to start on Monday, January 12, during which time the queuing system and general ambience of the restaurant will be transformed. A coffee dock facility within the Departures Area for outbound passengers to avail of tea, coffee, sandwiches and light snacks will be open during the month-long improvement works, while the bar and restaurant in the main airport concourse will be closed to facilitate the refurbishment. “The recent redevelopment of the pre-boarding area in our departures lounge has been a great success and now it’s time for the bar and restaurant to follow suit,” Basil Sheerin, Financial Controller at Kerry Airport, said. “On completion of the work, we will be introducing a more efficient queuing system, incorporating a new self-service area.” In what can only be described as a comprehensive programme of work within a short time-frame, the restaurant will be fitted out with new catering equipment and an overall upgrade to lighting, furnishings, and décor. The Board of Kerry Airport accept that there is never a good time to close an important facility like a restaurant and the Management at Kerry Airport kindly ask their customers to bear with them during this period.

Liebherr in Killarney has a long tradition of apprentice training. The very first apprentices enrolled in 1959 and to date, Liebherr has trained over 1000 apprentices in Killarney. “Apprenticeships have always been a vital component of Liebherr’s business strategy and is in line with the Liebherr philosophy that practical and theoretical training must go hand in hand,” Trevor O’Donoghue, from Liebherr, said. “The apprentice-training model combines a practical and theoretical education, delivered with the cooperation of SOLAS, the state body with responsibility for training and further education. Recent years has seen Liebherr invest over €250,000 in the expansion and upgrading of their apprentice training facilities in Killarney. “2019 sees the proud tradition of apprentice training continuing, with 14 new apprentices embarking on their training at Liebherr Container Cranes this January. Five of the apprentices are electrical apprentices, three are mechanical automation and maintenance fitters, whilst six are metal fabrication apprentices,” he said.

Sona Vitamins have a wide range of probiotics for the whole family In Ireland today, over a quarter of people suffer from prolonged illness each year highlighting a need for immunity boosting practices to be implemented as part of a healthy lifestyle. Probiotics are often referred to as good bacteria as they help to keep the gut healthy and maintain a balance of bacteria in the body. Sona’s bespoke probiotic product range covers Acidophilus, Acidobifidus, Afterbiotic and BabyBiotic, along with three new products; Sona Pro25Biotic, Sona UltraBiotic- Active Lives, Sona UltraBiotic- For Women. Sona, the oldest and largest Irish producer of vitamin mineral supplements in Ireland has over 33 years’ experience in formulating quality vitamins, and herbal remedies. Research has shown that taking a probiotic supplement on a regular basis can help to improve digestive health and strengthen the immune system. Research published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport found that New Zealand athletes had about 40 percent fewer colds and gastrointestinal infections when they took a probiotic compared to when they took a placebo. About 80 percent of the immune boosting bacteria live in the gastrointestinal tract so maintaining a balance in this area of the body is key to optimum immunity. Sona’s unique range of probiotics, in particular, Pro25Biotic which is the highest strength on the market, helps to manage bacteria levels in the gut to maintain optimum immunity and overall wellbeing. Acidophilus Complete is one of Sona’s most popular supplements as it is specially formulated to provide the body with the perfect balance of bacteria to maintain a healthy gut, thus helping towards alleviating the symptoms of anxiety and stress. Along with aiding the immune system, Sona probiotics help combat the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome which is thought to effect up to 20 percent of the Irish population at some stage in their lives. Sona probiotics also help combat; upper respiratory infections, diarrhoea/constipation, bloating, bacterial vaginosis, urinary tract infections and symptoms of skin irritation. There are eight Sona probiotic products available across the range including: New to the range: Sona Pro25Biotic, Sona UltraBiotic - Active Lives, Sona UltraBiotic - For Women. Police search for man who licked doorbell for three hours
Police were this week hunting for a man who was filmed licking a doorbell for three hours – while a family slept inside their home. The bizarre incident happened in Salinas, California in the early hours of Saturday morning. CCTV shows 33 yearold Roberto Daniel Arroyo, outside the Dungan’s family home at about 5am. In what has to be one of the strangest stories in a long time – Arroyo is cap-
tured leaning his head against the outside intercom - which is located just outside the front door - licking the doorbell from several different angles! The Dungan’s children were home alone but luckily undisturbed by the incident. The family had only just installed the doorstep camera a month before and were very disturbed by this strange incident.
Trump Corner Trump could declare a national emergency President Trump indicated yesterday (Thursday) that he may declare a national emergency if Congress can’t reach an agreement to fund his border wall. The President warned as he departed the White House that he would take the step - which would be subject to immediate legal challenge - as he continues to highlight the need for increased border security between the US and Mexico - a central promise of his presidential election campaign. Trump stormed out of a meeting with Democratics insisting they weren’t ready to deal. Now Trump could declare a national

emergency in order to fund his wall and end the funding standoff as talks came to a standstill with Democrats on Wednesday after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she would not support building a barrier structure on the US-Mexico border. And Trump has said that his lawyers have advised him he’s within his rights to take the step. The Trump administration has put a price tag of at least $25 billion on a wall for the full US-Mexico border. Trump later Tweeted ‘Just left a meeting with Chuck and Nancy, a total waste of time. I asked what is going to happen in 30 days if I quickly open things up, are you going to approve Border Security which includes a Wall or Steel Barrier? Nancy said, NO. I said bye-bye, nothing else works!’
Nurses and midwives announce strike dates More than 40,000 nurses nationally are set to go on strike for a 24 hours period at the end of January. The strike action, which will be the second national strike in the INMO’s hundred-year history, will take place on January 30 and should the dispute go unresolved, there will be further 24-hour strikes on February 5, 7, 12, 13 and 14. The strike will see Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) members withdraw their labour for 24 hours, providing only lifesaving care and emergency response teams. The dispute centres on safe staffing in the public health service. According to the INMO, the HSE has not been able to recruit and retain enough nurses and midwives on current wages. The number of staff nurses fell by 1,754 (6 percent) between 2008 and 2018, despite an ageing, growing population making the health service busier. “Going on strike is the last thing a nurse or midwife wants to do,” INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said. “But the crisis in recruitment and retention has made it impossible for us to do our jobs properly. We are not able give patients the care they deserve under these conditions. “The HSE simply cannot recruit enough nurses and midwives on these wages. Until that changes, the health service will continue to go
understaffed and patient care will be compromised. “The ball is in the government’s court. This strike can be averted. All it takes is for the government to acknowledge our concerns, engage with us directly, and work to resolve this issue, in a pro-active manner. “We were due to meet with the government in the national oversight body in December, but the meeting was cancelled. Like many patients in Ireland’s health service, we are still waiting for an appointment.” INMO President Martina Harkin-Kelly added that nurses entered these professions because they care for patients. “We’ll be going on strike for the exact same reason,” he said. “Ireland’s patients deserve better than this understaffed health service. “Nurses and midwives are now globally traded assets. The public health service no longer pays a competitive wage, so we can no longer get the necessary number of nurses and midwives. “We are calling on the public to support us. Nurses and midwives are always there for you when you need help. Now we need your help.”
Glowing trees could replace streetlamps Roads of the future could be lit by glowing trees instead of streetlamps, thanks to a breakthrough in creating bioluminescent plants. Experts injected specialised nanoparticles into the leaves of a watercress plant, which caused it to give off a dim light for nearly four hours. This could solve lots of problems. The chemical involved, which produced enough light to read a book by, is the same as is used by fireflies to create their characteristic shine. To create their glowing plants, engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) turned to an enzyme called luciferase. Luciferase acts on a molecule called luciferin, causing it to emit light. Another molecule called Co-enzyme A helps the process along by removing a reaction byproduct that can inhibit luciferase activity. The MIT team packaged each of these components into a different type of nanoparticle carrier. The nanoparticles help them to get
to the right part of the plant and also prevent them from building to concentrations that could be toxic to the plants. The result was a watercress plant that functioned like a desk lamp. Researchers believe with further tweaking, the technology could also be used to provide lights bright enough to illuminate a workspace or even an entire street, as well as low-intensity indoor lighting. “The vision is to make a plant that will function as a desk lamp — a lamp that you don’t have to plug in,” Michael Strano, professor of chemical engineering at MIT and the senior author of the study, said. “The light is ultimately powered by the energy metabolism of the plant itself. Our work very seriously opens up the doorway to streetlamps that are nothing but treated trees, and to indirect lighting around homes.” The full findings of the study were published in the American Chemical Society journal Nano Letters.

Cheese toasties Kilkenny Group to banned from Bristol acquire Sammy’s
Restaurant and Retail Store in Inch
Cheese toasties have been banned in one British town – for fear the food van selling the items will attract anti-social behaviour. Bristol councillors have instead granted a provisional licence for cold food, such as ice cream, and tea and coffee in Monk’s Park, Biddestone Road. The ban comes after the city council’s public safety and protection committee heard on Tuesday that the park had, in the past, been
plagued by gangs of motorcycle-riding youths “terrorising” families, and late-night drunken disturbances. Locals fear that the food van selling the cheese toasties and other hot goods could cause anti-social behaviour in the area. At the meeting members granted permission for a vendor to sell cold food - but only on the condition that it operates only between 9am and 6pm - and not sell hot food such as cheese toasties.

Sammy’s is a welcomed addition to Kilkenny’s award-winning restaurants in Nassau Street, Dublin, Shanagarry, Cork and Kilkenny Design Centre and will continue its amazing reputation for supplying delicious meals using locally sourced ingredients. “This is a fantastic and exciting opportunity for Kilkenny to further develop our

We would also like to thank our loyal customers and visitors for supporting us throughout the years.” This announcement comes just eight weeks after Kilkenny Group’s purchase of Kilkenny Design Centre bringing the organisation’s outlet count from 15 to 17 premium stores further securing Kilkenny’s place as a leading employer in and promoter of Irish craft and design.
World’s richest man to divorce After a 25-year marriage, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife MacKenzie, are to divorce. The couple announced the news in a joint statement via Twitter on Wednesday. Amazon this week eclipsed Microsoft to become the world’s most valuable listed company. According to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, with an estimated wealth of $137bn, Bezos is the world’s richest man. “We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other,” the couple’s statement said. “If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again. We’ve
had such a great life together as a married couple and we also see wonderful futures ahead, as parents, friends, partners in ventures and projects, and as individuals pursuing ventures and adventures. Though the labels might be different, we remain a family, and we remain cherished friends.” The question now is – how much will she get in the divorce settlement?

www. seantaaffe.com Honeymoon Hints and Tips • Start Planning Early
• Make Your Honeymoon Uniquely Yours
This will help avoid disappointment and to help secure better airfare and room allocations. At Torc Travel, we know which times of the year are the busiest for each location. We can help make sure that your dream honeymoon is being planned with sufficient time to ensure you get the best experience! It also ticks a box so you can concentrate on other wedding plans.
We get it, wedding planning can be stressful! You hear your friends talk about what a great time they had on their honeymoon, it’s very tempting to simply copy and paste theirs. It’s okay to get advice from friends and family, but keep in mind this is your big-trip. At Torc Travel, we will take the stress out of the planning and still ensure that this is uniquely tailored to you.
• Set a Budget Ahead of Time
• Don’t Only Use Online Research
As the wedding planning progresses and gets more and more costly it is very tempting to take from your honeymoon budget to put towards something else. But think about it, your honeymoon is going to be the first trip that you will take as a married couple and after all of the wedding planning you are not only going to want but deserve a dream honeymoon! We can help to show you what options are available for your budget and how to get the best value for it.
Google is a great place to start when beginning the honeymoon planning process, but don’t limit yourself to a search engine. Clicking Google images can bring up pictures that might not match the reality of a certain destination. Talking to friends, family members who have been there and of course, us at Torc Travel will help to paint a realistic picture of the destinations you are looking for.
Work Together
You have a wedding planner at your venue to help with your big day, why wouldn’t you bring on a honeymoon expert to help with your big trip? At Torc Travel, we can give you extra information and take away 90% of the workload! We help to ensure that your honeymoon runs flawlessly from the beginning of the planning process and we don’t consider our job to be finished until you land back home. We make sure it is perfectly suited to fit your needs and we do all of the organizing, all you’ll need to do is enjoy!
While dividing and conquering might come in handy for certain aspects of planning your wedding but honeymoon planning should be a joint effort in order to ensure both of your desires are met. You might like the idea of relaxing on a beach for 10 days but your spouse-to-be might have other plans. Make sure you both get a clear idea of what you want to take away from your honeymoon.
Be Specific About Your Wants It’s easy to say you want an “exotic destination” but everyone’s definition is different. Make sure you both are on the same page about what type of honeymoon you envision yourselves going on. We can help you narrow down your options to find the perfect fit for you!

Love at first sight leads to New Year wedding It was a great start to 2019 for one couple as they tied the knot in Killarney on New Year’s Day. Diarmuid Coakley and Ann McEnery, who are living in Muckross, said ‘I Do’ in Muckross Church, with Mass celebrated by Fr Pat McDonnell from Rathmore parish. Four years ago the couple set eyes on each other at a wedding in Tipperary – and it was love at first sight. A year after meeting they decided to move back to Diarmuid’s native Rathmore, before later settling in Muckross. Well-known Diarmuid, who is a teacher in Shrone National School, appeared as Seán Mac Diarmada in the play ‘Patrick’, and the dame in Rathmore panto the ‘Piped Piper’ last year. Ann is aworking as an SNA in LoughQuittane NS and also runs McEnery Bespoke Framers from home. The day of their own wedding was very special as the couple’s 15-month-old son John walked his mom down the aisle. “John played a blinder,” Ann, who is originally from Newcastle West, said. “He was dressed in a knitted Aran cardigan made by his nana
Eilish Coakley.” Bridesmaids included Ann’s sisters Margaret McEnery, Ide McEnery Maeve McEnery, and her sister-in-law Rebecca McEnery, who all wore their own style, while the Groomsmen Diarmuid’s brother Ciaràn Coakley, his oldest friend Aidan Cremin from Rathmore, and his college friends, Ger Collins from Cork, Colm Horgan from Listowel and Michael Ahern from Lyracrompane, all dressed in black tuxedos. Ann herself wore a silk high waisted trousers and English lace top. They celebrated with family and friends at their reception in the Brehon Hotel. However, little John was tucked up in bed early, exhausted after such a big day out - but heard all about the celebrations the following day. Diarmuid and Ann honeymooned for a short time in Castlemartyr Hotel and Resort. The couple had such an amazing wedding and said that if they could they would do it all over again.

EU agrees CO2 cuts of 37.5 percent by 2030 European car-makers are reeling following an agreement by the European Union to cut CO2 emissions from cars by 37.5 percent and from vans by 31 percent by 2030. In response, the car industry says the targets will threaten jobs and reduce consumer choice. The new reduction targets, designed to curb climate change, were agreed by EU governments and the European Parliament in December heralded as a compromise since the original proposal was a 30 percent CO2 cut between 2021 and 2030. Car-makers will now be forced to meet an interim CO2 cut for cars and vans of 15 percent by 2025. Among the harshest critics of the new proposals has been Germany’s car industry, which claims that such
big cuts demand too much of the industry and that forcing consumers to switch to electric cars could harm its industry and cut jobs. Despite the cuts, environmental lobbyists were not satisfied they went far enough, claiming the reductions weren’t fast enough to hit climate goals. Originally, the EU was chasing a 40 percent cut before it was forced to compromise. The EU ruling means that come 2030, among the 15 million vehicles sold in Europe annually, around a third of them will have to be pure-electric or hydrogen-powered. Currently, electric vehicles account for around 1.5 percent of all cars sold. In Europe, cars are attributed with generating 10 percent of total CO2 emissions.
Boring Company unveils first high-speed tunnel Elon Musk’s Boring Company has unveiled a prototype underground tunnel in Los Angeles that will one day transport high-speed pure-electric vehicles around the city. Created to ease the North American city’s chronic traffic congestion, the Boring Company’s first tunnel measures just 1.8km long and runs beneath the municipality of Hawthorne, where the Boring Company and the Musk-owned SpaceX are located. Claimed to be capable of carrying modified pure-electric vehicles, or passenger-carrying pods, at speeds of up to 240km/h, the prototype tunnel is said to have been built using state-of-the-art tunnelling and engineering techniques. The Boring Company carried out its first demonstrations using modified Tesla Model X SUVs but, instead of reaching the maximum 240km/h cruising speed, they were shuttled at a more sedate top speed of 55km/h. Like a highway, when you near your destination the vehicle will exit the main Loop using an off ramp. Crucially, the system has been designed so the main track is never slowed, enabling vehicles to maintain its high 240km/h cruising speed.

Someone has found 11 brand-new, effectively un-driven E34-era BMW 5 Series - seemingly left to rot in a warehouse in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria in distinctly mysterious circumstances. These pictures have been circulating on the internet for a while now - and there’s a lot of different versions of how the cars came to be there, and what’s going to happen to them now. Nothing can be confirmed 100 percent, but the story is that the cars are the last 11 of 186 5 Series bought from a bankrupt
Spanish dealer in 1994. They were imported into Bulgaria that year, but because of changes to the country’s tax laws in 1995, the mystery new owner had trouble selling them off. Several of the 186 were rare, all-wheel drive 525ix models - and those were apparently the first to go. The last 11 - 10 saloons and one estate are a mix of 520i and 525i. They’ve never been driven on the road. Fluids were changed in 2003, from which time the cars were left uncovered in the warehouse.

Hyundai hell-bent on rally success Fed up with being the bridesmaid in the World Rally Championship, Hyundai has fired its team boss just three weeks before the start of the new season. Replacing Michel Nandan is Italian Andrea Adamo, already the Korean manufacturer’s customer racing
manager running its i20 R5 rally and i30 N TCR touring car programs, which he will continue to oversee. This year’s WRC begins with the Monte Carlo Rally on January 24-27 with nine time WRC champion Sebastien Loeb joining the team on a limited program.

Ferrari F1 boss Maurizio Arrivabene has been fired Ferrari has just announced that, effective immediately, team principal Maurizio Arrivabene is leaving the team. Arrivabene spent four years in the role of team principal, having joined in December 2014. Previously, he had served as a vice president at Philip Morris, the tobacco company

Garden Magic

STARTS

Get a total body workout in your garden Healthy New Year’s resolutions are always top of the list in January and one way to keep fit and healthy is to spend more time outside in the garden. I am always fascinated by articles and videos which feature ‘keep fit housework’ - apparently you can keep a trim waist by vacuuming, tighten up bingo wings by washing windows and so on. Well… housework has never appealed to me, but you can definitely strengthen thighs by weeding and work those abdominals when hoeing! Pottering in the garden can be a total body workout, as long as you are aware of what you are doing, otherwise you may not be able to move the following day. Raking and hoeing too far away from yourself will result in crippling pain down one side of your waist. The best method for raking is to do small sections at a time, no further than about a meter, tempting as it is to rake out in front of you in an attempt to get the job done quicker!
Short jabbing movements get the best results. Weeding should be done in a squatting position, rather than bending. Alternatively use a tool such as a long handled cultivator or a weeding knife. Kneelers should always be used to protect your knees and there are really handy ones with sides on them which you can lean on to lower yourself. I heartily recommend anything which makes life easier and safer. Cleaning glasshouses can also be a keep fit exercise, as can pruning, hedge cutting and lawn mowing. However, the very act of just being in the garden is positive for your health. I am not into mindfulness or meditation or those types of things per se, but being outside and being aware of that is like meditation in itself. Just listening to birds, observing nature and admiring plants, while breathing deeply and evenly, will lower blood pressure and relax the mind.
Sowing seeds, watching them grow and reaping the rewards in the form of flowers or vegetables also has a positive effect, especially for elderly people. The knowledge that there is growth and continuity gives a sense of expectation and future. Gardening with children is also incredibly rewarding. Not only are you passing on knowledge, but you are also encouraging outdoor activity. It is surprising how eagerly children take to gardening, even those who might not normally be too enamoured by being sent outside ‘to play’. I know this, as I was one of those reluctant children! Gardening classes for beginners and enthusiasts will be taking place again in Killarney Community College, Thursday evenings from 7.30pm – 9.30pm. I will cover all aspects of gardening, veg, what plant where, organic gardening, lawncare and so on. Please contact the community college during school hours for details.

But who are we to question and doubt? God knoweth well what He’s about; He knew she longed to “go to sleep” Where only angels, a vigil keep. The pain of living grew too great No longer could she stay and wait; She did not want to leave you, dear, But she had finished her work down here. So she closed her eyes and when she awoke, These are the words the Master spoke ... “Welcome, dear child, you are Home at last, And now the burden of living is past.” “There’s work for you in My Kingdom, dear And you are needed and wanted here.” So weep not, she has just gone on ahead, Don’t think of her as being dead. She’s out of sight for a little while, And you’ll miss her touch & her little smile, But you know she is safe in the home above Where there is nothing but Peace and Love. And, surely, you would not deny her peace ... And you’re glad that she has found release. Think of her there as a soul that is free, And Home at last, where she wanted to be. Miss you ma always and forever. Love always your son Owen and daughter in law Margaret. Xxx

No one can take away the precious time That we spent with you Ian. We store each memory in our hearts. When we all get together, we laugh, we cry, we remember you Ian with that great big smile. We will comfort one another here As your Nana and grandad comfort you.
It is six years now and everyone is just going through the motions, But no matter how hard we try, we can’t escape our emotions. The tears still flow and our hearts are still broken, The hurt and pain are left unsaid- not spoken. Time is a healer they say but I can’t believe it, Since you went away It is harder now than ever before, We miss you each day more and more. There is a cold harsh reality, That you are gone, We just want you back our precious one.
Until we meet again, I ask God to protect and comfort you and the ones you loved so much.
Miss your laughter and your hugs.

We little knew the day that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, In death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you The day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories. Your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same, but as God calls us one by one the chain will link again. Remembered and missed by you Sons, Daughters, Sons-in-law, Daughters-inlaw, Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and Families. Anniversary Mass is on Sunday 13th January at 11.15am in Our Lady Of Lourdes Church, Kilcummin.
O’RIORDAN
25TH ANNIVERSARY
In loving memory of Ian O’Riordan, Who died on 14th January 2013. Unendingly I mourn my precious son Too early yet this earthly home he left, Perfidious sleep confounded nature’s order, To leave his loves perpetually bereft. Those golden dreams and aspirations, The seed of yesterday a withered bloom, Those baubles which are cause to celebrate, In death now mock us gently from his tomb. How treacherous death does steal on youth’s exuberance, To wreak such havoc from the ecstasy of life, Where once was only joy and future promise Tormented hearts endure eternal strife. Sadly missed by your father John, brother Liam, sisters Melissa and Saerlaith and by Treasa.
6TH ANNIVERSARY
O’SULLIVAN
In loving memory of Ian O’Riordan, Who died on 14th January 2013. Even in our darkest days, Since we’ve been apart, Memories of the times we shared, Help to warm our hearts. Everyday we miss the smile, That no one can replace, But still it brings us comfort, In the sadness that we face. Life is full of mysteries, That no one can explain, But we know someday, somewhere, We will meet again. Until we do we’ll find the strength, To live through each new day, Grateful for the happy years before you went away. Sadly missed by Bernie, Mohammed, Allanah and Laila. xx
In loving memory of Ian O’Riordan, Who died on 14th January 2013. Our hearts are full of memories With pride we speak your name, Though life must go on without you, It will never be the same. Those special days will not return When we were all together But the love and memories in our hearts, Will stay with us forever. Memories drift to scenes long past, Time rolls on but memories last, Sunshine passes, shadows fall, Love and remembrance outlasts them all.
3RD ANNIVERSARY
And though we’re full of sadness, That you’re no longer here, Your influence still guides us, And we still feel you near. What we shared will never die, It lives within our hearts, Bringing strength and comfort, While we are apart.
6TH ANNIVERSARY
In loving memory of Ian O’Riordan, Late of Maughautourig, Gneeveguilla, Who died on the 14th January 2013. The moment that you died Our hearts were torn in two One side filled with heartache The other died with you I often lie awake at night When the world is fast asleep And take a walk down memory lane With tears upon my cheek.
Treasured memories of a kind and wonderful nephew and cousin, Ian O’Riordan Who died on 14th January 2013. We love you so much.
From your loving Mom, Liam, Melissa and Anthony.
Everywhere we go, We know you are always with us. If we would go to the beach We would write your name in the sand, Watch the waves come in and see your name, slowly fade away. It is a reminder of how cruel life can be and how our time here on earth is so short, So enjoy every moment while you can. We love and miss you everyday but we know you are beside us every step of the way.
Mass at 6.30pm on the 14th of January in Gneeveguilla Church.
We miss and love you lots, Ger, Noreen, Sarah and Laura.
Remembering you is easy I do it everyday But miss you Ian is a heartache That never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart And there you shall remain Until the joyous day arrives That we will meet again.

Who wants to captain Kerry?
Shane Murphy leads Kerry out for the 2018 Munster semi-final against Clare. Kerry captains haven’t experienced much luck in the last five years. Pic: Sportsfile.
Adam Moynihan Traditionally speaking, being named captain of Kerry is one of the greatest honours in Irish sport. In any given year you basically have a 68% chance of winning a Munster Championship, and a 28% chance of lifting the Sam McGuire Cup in September. Lead Kerry to glory and you join the likes of Ogie Moran, Páidí Ó Sé and Séamus Moynihan in the history books. Why would you not want the job? Kerry are one of only two counties who still ask their reigning county champions to nominate a captain and while it could hardly be argued that the practice has been a hindrance on the balance of history, many observers (and players) have questioned aloud whether or not it’s time for a change. And not without good reason. In the past five years or so the Kerry captaincy – and I say it reluctantly - has become something of a poisoned chalice (and not just because of Dublin’s irritating period of domination). Colm Cooper captained Kerry in 2013 and although that particular year ended in heartache, Gooch started in all and top-scored in three of the team’s five championship games. It would be fair to say that it has not been plain sailing for Kerry captains since.
My understanding is that the players are generally in favour of changing the selection process

2014 to 2018
Dr Crokes ace Kieran O’Leary was handed the role in 2014 but he didn’t start in the championship. Clubmate Fionn Fitzgerald was captain on the field, although Leary did play a captain’s role off the bench
in the semi-final against Mayo when he kicked a crucial point to force a replay. The Crokes pair subsequently accepted the Sam McGuire together after defeating Donegal in the decider so the year was far from disastrous for Leary, but he would naturally have preferred to feature more prominently. Kieran Donaghy was named captain for 2015 on the back of Austin Stacks’ 2014 County Final triumph and the Tralee man started throughout the Munster Championship. Things turned sour, however, when he was dropped for Gooch in the All-Ireland quarter-final against Kildare. He was recalled for the semi-final versus Tyrone but he was whipped at halftime and the skipper relinquished his starting berth for the final, which Kerry lost to Dublin. St Mary’s and South Kerry talisman Bryan Sheehan took the reins in 2016 but he suffered a similar fate to his predecessor. The dead ball expert started in
Sport
11.01.19 Munster but lost his place for the All-Ireland series, only seeing 10-15 minutes of action against Clare in the quarters and Dublin in the semis. Next up was Johnny Buckley and the tireless Crokes player is unique amongst Kerry captains of the past five years in that he actually started at the business end of the campaign. Buckley lined out at centre forward against Galway and both semi-finals against Mayo, although he was substituted at half-time in the replay. The following year the then-28-year-old stepped away from the Kerry set-up altogether due to work commitments. Experienced corner back Fionn Fitzgerald took over the responsibility at the beginning of 2018 but he barely played at all apart from a couple of National League appearances in the spring. Rookie keeper Shane Murphy took the mantle and he led the side to Munster glory, but his year also ended in disappointment when he was dropped for the final two games of the Super 8s. So, taking all of that into account, who actually wants to captain Kerry this year? One thing we know for sure is that it will be a Crokes man again in 2019 as the latest motion to do away with the current system was defeated (again) at a recent convention. Murphy is a good candidate; I thought he managed the role well in his debut season. But he will have to battle it out with Brian Kelly for the number one jersey and it’s impossible to tell at this juncture whom Peter Keane is likely to favour. Gavin White, who filled in at the end of last season, seems like a natural choice simply because he was one of Kerry’s most consistent performers in 2018 and he should be a starter again this time out. Micheál Burns, the other main candidate, grabbed national headlines late last year when he publicly questioned the tradition, saying that it might be “time to look for the most experienced and wellplaced person”. Interestingly, he also said that being handed the captaincy in Murphy’s absence (against Galway in the league) had an adverse effect on his performance. Having said that, I’m sure he would gladly accept the honour if he gets the nod.
How do the players feel?
My understanding is that the Kerry players are generally in favour of changing the selection process. I know that if I were Peter Keane I definitely would not want such a significant decision to be made on my behalf. And it is a significant decision. People talk down the importance of a captain but whenever I play I’m always very aware of who my captain is. A good captain can set the tone and provide inspiration in times of need, both on and off the pitch. In the modern era we’re hyper-conscious of how fine the margins are between success and failure, so I find it staggering that we, as a county, are leaving anything to chance. Don’t get me wrong, Shane, Gavin and Micheál are quality players and whoever gets the nod could well be a fantastic captain and leader for Kerry in 2019. But surely the manager is best placed to make that decision? Traditions are nice and all but when it comes down to it we have to choose what’s more important: history or the future.

Holders Dr Crokes will open their 2019 County League campaign with a tricky away tie against old foes Rathmore on the weekend of March 9/10. It looks like a difficult start on paper for Pat O’Shea’s side, who will also face last year’s runners-up Kerins O’Rahilly’s and newly promoted Austin Stacks in their opening three games. Their league schedule will conclude with a home game against Dingle on either August 11 or September 8, depending on when Kerry finish up in the championship. Cross-town rivals Killarney Legion host Dingle on the opening day with a Killarney derby against Spa next up on March 24. Stephen Stack’s side will be keen to get a good start as a tough run through June and July will see them play Dr Crokes, Rathmore, Rahilly’s and Stacks in a five-week period. They will welcome An Ghaeltacht to Derreen on the final day of the season. Kilcummin’s first game back in the top tier will come against fellow promoted side Austin Stacks. Interestingly, these two sides also met on the first day of the 2018 season. On that occasion, Kilcummin got their promotion drive off to the perfect start when they ran out 1-16 to 0-11 winners. Spa had a blistering start to 2018 when they won their first five games in the league, but a disappointing second half of the season saw them finish 6th on 11 points. They will be hoping to fly out of the traps again this time out when they play An Ghaeltacht in Gallarus. The Dr Crokes B team will get their first ever Division 2 campaign under way with an away tie against Beaufort. V

Irish boxer Andy Lee lands a shot on Matt Korobov.
In the ring, Lee was precise, methodical and utterly ruthless Book Review Eamonn Fitzgerald Fighter is a new book which gives us an insight into the mind of Andy Lee, who was the WBO middleweight champion from 2014-2015, the first Irish professional boxer to win a world title on American soil since 1934. He also represented Ireland in the 2004 Olympics in his amateur days. The memoirs are published by Gill Books are ghosted by Niall Kelly, who wrote Philly McMahon’s autobiography The Choice. A boxer’s style reflects his personality and at his best in the ring he is measured, thoughtful and strategic. But when it comes to it, Andy Lee does not back down. He says then you see him become stubborn, determined, headstrong, even borderline reckless at times. “Never question my heart for the fight. I won’t back down. I won’t shy away. If you want to go to war, let’s go to war.” His introduction to boxing began at 8 years of age when he joined the Repton Boxing club in London. The family moved to Limerick and he joined the St Francis ABC in Limerick. His pinnacle as an amateur was the 2004 Olympics. He signed his first professional contract with Emanuel Steward in 2005 and made the move to Detroit where he trained in the renowned Kronk Gym until Steward died suddenly in 2012. Then Lee joined up with the English trainer Adam Booth. Andy retired in February 2018 and
now lives in Dublin with his wife and daughter. It is very hard to weigh up how finely a boxer’s life is balanced. It sits on a knife’s edge where one punch can change everything. Your entire life, your health, your happiness and your career is bound up in these decisions that make up every second you are in the ring. Lee ponders his life pattern and it is hard to know why a life turns out the way it does. Maybe you make your own fate. Maybe it’s your own destiny. He was making good progress until life threw up new challenges to him in 2012. His career was moving along nicely when Lee suffered two devastating blows in quick succession. First the defeat in his World Championship, and then the sudden loss of Steward, his guide and confidante over so many years. Lee reflects on those key moments in a fight. When your good body shot lands, you can hear it too. You hear the dull thud as the punch connects, and then that desperate, futile reach for breath as the muscles go into shock. You hear the air go out of them, not in the slow hiss of a burst ball, but in panicked gasps. Then you have to take full advantage of your opponent’s moment of weakness, your moment of strength and make sure that the balance of power never finds equilibrium again.
In these moments the best boxer has the instincts of a cold-blooded killer. Precise. Methodical. Completely devoid of all emotion. Utterly ruthless. That mindset made Andy Lee the successful boxer both as an amateur and as a professional. Fighter is a lyrical and philosophical memoir of Andy Lee. Niall Kelly captures the resilience, bravery and the wisdom to be found in the limits of human experience.
Lee’s autobiography is ghost written by Niall Kelly.

Lakers close gap as leaders finally falter National League Div 1

Super League
At the end of the season, the top two teams from each conference will play off to decide the National League finalists and both Ballincollig and the Lakers will be keen to secure the top seed and so avoid runaway Northern Conference leaders DBS Éanna. The Dubliners have a perfect 15-0 record and there are currently 12 points between them and the Dublin Lions in second. The winners of the National League will be promoted to the Super League, while the beaten finalists will have the option of asking for a playoff game with the second bottom team in the Super League. The winners would play Super League basketball in the 2019/2020 season. Whether or not the Lakers are ready for the Super League at this moment in time is another matter. They are certainly blessed with one of the best home courts in the country and one would imagine that there would be enough interest (and financial backing) locally to make it viable, but this nascent squad would likely need significant bolstering if they were to successfully make the grade at the very highest level of Irish basketball. Anyway, the club won’t need to consider that prospect just yet. For now the focus will be on winning

There was nothing too remarkable about the Lakers’ comprehensive home victory on Saturday night, but a surprising result elsewhere could have interesting ramifications for the rest of the season. The high-flying hosts, who are firmly in the playoff picture on the back of a largely impressive campaign to date, were up against the 1-13 Galway Titans so anything other than a comfortable win would have constituted a major shock. As it turned out, another fine performance by Mark Greene helped Cormac O’Donoghue’s side to an easy 25-point win and they are now 12 points clear of IT Carlow in third. The big news in the Southern Conference came from Cork as leaders Ballincollig fell to an unexpected defeat to KUBS BC from Dublin. KUBS currently find themselves mid-table in the Northern Conference but 44 points from American Elijah Tillman helped them to an impressive 96-85 win. The result, coupled with the Lakers’ win over the Titans, means the gap between first and second is now just six points (two wins). With seven games to play, Ballincollig are still favourites to hold on to first place but the Lakers will undoubtedly be buoyed by last weekend’s events.

Celts open up five-point gap with win over Fenit

Killarney Celtic are now five points clear at the top of the Premier A following a solid 2-0 win at home to Fenit Samphires. Podge O’Connor gave the hosts the lead in the 12th minute and Cathal O’Shea doubled their advantage five minutes before the break. The Hoops rearguard kept a clean sheet to ensure the victory while at the other end another impressive performance by skilful striker Stephen McCarthy saw him named Man of the Match. Meanwhile, fierce rivals Killarney Athletic could only manage a draw against Mitchels Avenue in Mounthawk Park. Stuart Templeman’s side took the lead twice through Shane Lyne and Will Courtney but a late Seán O’Reilly goal rescued a point for the Tralee men. The Blues are now joint second with Castleisland in second place but Castleisland have two games in hand. In the Premier B, Celtic B defeated Castleisland B 2-0 with Evan Cronin and Ryan Kelliher finding the target. Killarney Athletic B fell to a 3-1 defeat against Classic FC in Woodlawn, Daniel O’Sullivan registering the hosts’ solitary goal. In Division 2A, goals from Tom Templeman and Barry O’Leary propelled Mastergeeha to a 2-1 win over Ballybunion. In 2B, Cedar Galaxy B lost to 4-2 CS Abbeydorney despite the best efforts of diminutive striker Conor Collins. The tricky forward bagged a brace for Galaxy in Mounthawk Park, including a spectacular dinked effort that found the top corner of the net.

How cool are these? To celebrate their 70th birthday, adidas are releasing the Copa 70 Years FG football boots. Based on the classic Copa Mundials (a favourite of GAA players up and down the country for decades), the Copa 70 is a modern take on one of adidas’ most popular and reliable models. Boasting a premium leather lining and a soft knit textile upper, the new design has a foldable tongue with the German company’s distinctive bluebird logo on one side. It has been reported that Juventus and Argentina striker Paulo Dybala will be the only adidas athlete to wear the Copa 70s on-pitch. For the rest of us mere mortals, the limited edition boots are set to cost around €250.

Lynch brace sends Killarney through to next round
A couple of tries from dynamic full back Brian Lynch helped Killarney RFC to victory over Bantry in their first game of 2019. Bantry put Killarney under serious pressure right from the start, at one stage achieving over 20 phases of play, but they were unable to penetrate the strong visiting defence. 15 minutes in, Killarney began to assert dominance in the game. A superb scrum forced a knock-on which set the tone for the remainder of the first half. A penalty for a high tackle gave out-half Oisín O’Shea a chance to open the scoring and he duly converted a difficult kick. Killarney led 3-0 at the break. Killarney started the second half as they finished the first, playing some great running rugby. Bantry were now under all sorts of pressure and they soon gave away another penalty for another high tackle. O’Shea took full advantage with the boot to double his side’s lead. Minutes later Brian Lynch crossed the line for Killarney’s first try and after a period of concerted pressure, the full back broke through again for his second. Bantry finished strongly and managed to close the gap with two minutes remaining but it wasn’t enough to overcome a very solid Killarney performance. Speaking after the match, Killarney coach Diarmuid O’Malley said he was pleased with the victory. “Bantry were very determined to try and topple us today,” he said. “They started very well and played some very good rugby. They really tested our defense in those first 20 minutes. We then played some superb attacking rugby and scored two great tries. We were a little unlucky not to get a couple more. “It was the perfect preparation for our league game in Dungarvan next Sunday. It’s a game we must win to stay in contention for the league title.”
