A little six-year-old Killarney boy who is believed to have set a world record for climbing North Africa’s highest mountain - now plans to climb Kilimanjaro next year! Joshua Davison (6) from Countess Road, scaled the 4,000 metre climb of Mount Toubkal in Morocco, with his mom Lyndsey Clarke and her partner Lucky Flynn, on November 9. And he’s believed to be the youngest child ever to complete the summit. “He really is a natural,” his mom Lyndsey, an avid climber, told the Killarney Advertiser. “It’s a really good achievement and he loved it. We just said we’d see how it went - but he surprised us. He’s very fast - a speedy little fella and he loved the experience. He’s really keen to do more and has his sights set on Kilimanjaro next year.” Joshua, who is a pupil in St Oliver’s National School in Killarney, caught the climbing bug from both Lyndsey and Lucky. The couple are keen climbers and Joshua’s first climb was The Vee in Waterford followed by Carrantuohill - Ireland’s
Three arrested in Killarney on suspicion of money laundering BY MICHELLE CREAN
Three men were arrested on suspicion of money laundering after an early morning raid in Killarney town yesterday (Thursday). A team of over 30 - made up of members of the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) supported by Gardaí from Kerry Garda Division - conducted the planned search - part of the ongoing Operation Tarmac - at 6am on the Eastern side of Killarney town. Three men in their 30s were arrested, and at time of print were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Two of the men were detained in Killarney Garda Station and one man in Tralee. Investigations are ongoing.
night in a refuge. He was the only child, even going up the summit the next day people were stopping taking pictures and encouraging him.” She described the summit as a steep snow slope and they adjusted adult crampons for Joshua’s shoes to give him a firm grip.
However, she said as the weather was sunny it made the climb easier. “We went with no expectations. I was worried it might be cold for him but it was perfect sunny weather. He really is a natural - he’s big and strong for his age. He is the youngest to climb Toubkal and we’ve submitted it to the Guinness World Records. We are just waiting for confirmation. Next year we’re planning to climb Kilimanjaro which is 5,800 metres high. It’s the next most achievable goal.”
Killarney priest hails citizens of tragic US town BY ADAM MOYNIHAN A Californian town, which was destroyed by wildfires resulting in over 60 deaths this week, is strongly in the prayers of a Killarney priest. Fr Simon Twomey, who now resides in Killarney, once lived in the area known as Paradise, a small town 90 miles North of Sacramento, between 1984 and 1990. On Sunday, the area was completely devastated by the fires leaving almost 60 people dead and more than 200 missing - while 125,000 acres of land have been destroyed. It is believed that it could take years to rebuild the town. Fr Twomey said this week that he still knows people in the area and some have reached out to him since the disaster. “They’re very good people,” he said. “I think they were the most generous people I’ve ever met in my life. You couldn’t believe the giving. Very supportive, especially to the poor; they gave their heart and soul to the poor. “The community is up on a hill, about 2,200 feet up above sea level, and it’s covered in pine trees. When you drove into the town itself, you had the main street and then you had houses either side built right in the middle of the woods. I remember when my brother visited with his family, I drove him along a road and asked him how many people he thought lived in there. He said, ‘no one’. I said, ‘there are 10,000 people living in those woods.’”
“It was a beautiful, beautiful place. It was gorgeous. But the last four years, the weather was very dry so the pine needles falling from the trees would have collected. When the fires came, it was like feeding them matches.” “You had to be very careful there. They have lots of regulations; there were no fireworks allowed on the first of July, for example. “When it all dies down and the rains come, you’ll have mudslides because you’re on the hill.” The town has clearly stayed in Fr Twomey’s thoughts throughout the years as his Killarney residence is called ‘Paradise House’.

“He is involved in all the rallys including the Rally of the Lakes, the Historic Rally, and he was involved in the Circuit of Kerry. He’s a lovely fella, he’d never leave somebody on the side of the road. He’s a great mechanic.” Donie thanked the public for their support for the event as well as the many local businesses who have provided prizes on the night. “There’s no cover charge on the night, donations will be greatly accepted.”

Friends of a well-known local man - who has a long road to recovery ahead of him following serious illness - are planning a huge fundraising event next week. Mechanic John ‘Sully’ Sullivan (52) is currently in the Mater Hospital, Dublin, after becoming ill with sepsis approximately eight weeks ago. Self-employed and now out of work for the foreseeable future – family and friends formed a fundraising committee to support the father-of-three. They’re planning a huge fundraiser ‘A Night for Sully’ on Friday, November 30, in the K Town Bar and Grill. Local musicians are also on board for the event which begins at 9pm and will include spot prizes and a raffle. “We just want to support him in any way we can,” close personal friend Donal Shine told the Killarney Advertiser. “He became sick with a pain in his back at work, and after a visit to his GP was admitted to University Hospital Kerry for 10 days. He was getting worse and shifted to the Mater Hospital where he still is now. He has undergone approximently six operations. As he’s not working at the moment we just wanted to do something to help. He has a long road to recovery ahead of him.” Donie added that Sully is very well known, not only in Killarney for his mechanical skills, but also in rallying circles throughout Kerry.

Trivago award for local businesses Loch Lein Country House has won a 2019 Trivago award, under the four star category, this week. Run by Paul and Annette Corridan, the couple said that they are thrilled with the news. “We are naturally enough thrilled to have received this award and it is a surprisingly wonderful bonus to gain this recognition at the end of what has been a very good season for us,” Annette said. “We very often can be very self-critical of our efforts and this serves as a reminder that maybe we are doing a lot of things right. It will certainly increase customer expectations going forward but it may just be the catalyst to propel us forward for a fruitful 2019.” She added that it is testament to the hard work, dedication and guest care shown by their loyal and wonderful staff. “To our valued guests, a heartfelt thank you for sharing their experiences at Loch Lein Country House. Going forward, this recognition will stimulate our focus as we strive to achieve total guest satisfaction.”
Other local businesses who won awards were: Killeen House Hotel and Rozzers Restaurant, Killarney, the McSweeney Arms Hotel, Killarney, The Ross, Killarney, The Killarney Park Hotel, Killarney, The Dunloe Hotel and Gardens, Killarney, Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Spa, Killarney, Algret House B&B, Killarney and Ard Na Sidhe Country House, Killorglin.

TOWNTALK
Seán O’Sullivan has been appointed Store Manager at the Kerry GAA Store in the Outlet Centre.
BY ADAM MOYNIHAN Former Kerry footballer Seán O’Sullivan has taken the reins from Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan at the Kerry GAA Store in Killarney and the four-time All-Ireland winner says he has big shoes to fill. “I know Botty since he joined the Kerry set-up in 2004 as our equipment manager and from the minute he walked in, you just knew what kind of guy he was,” Seán said. “He’s a bubbly, vivacious character. Very friendly. When they opened the shop in 2013, it was a no-brainer for him to be the manager. He just has the personality for it. “After five years here he’s moving on to different things and I know that if I’m half as popular as he was, I’ll be doing a good job. My mantra is, ‘if it’s not broke don’t fix it’. I have my own ideas for the shop and how to take it forward but Niall and his staff have run it brilliantly. I just want to keep that going, and maybe add my own style to it as well.” The Cromane native is no stranger to Killarney having previously worked for 13 years at Bank of Ireland on New Street. The opportunity to return to the town was ‘one of the main attractions’ of the job, O’Sullivan says. “Killarney has a great vibe and I love the people, so from that point of view I’ve had no problem settling in. But the daily running of the business is something completely new to me so that is a little bit challenging. “Every day I’m getting better at it. I have great support in the staff that I have around me and it’s a ‘learn-as-you-go’ process. But I’m really enjoying it.” The store, which is located in the Killarney Outlet Centre, is currently preparing for a busy Christmas period and O’Sullivan says the new National League range is proving particularly popular with supporters. “Weekends are busy but like any business, there’s a bit of a November lull at the moment. We’re hoping to ramp up our Christmas campaign over the next few weeks. Vouchers are huge for us and they’re very popular at this time of year,” he said. “The new gear is lovely. It really is. And right now we’re already talking to O’Neills about our championship gear for the summer. We’ve got some very good, fresh ideas in relation to that as well. That’s the way the business works; you always have to be ahead of the game.” The new store manager is hoping for a prosperous 2019 and he acknowledged that the exploits of the Kerry senior team was bound to have a direct effect on business. “We want Kerry to go all the way – and maybe a few replays thrown in as well!” he joked. “No, look, there’s no doubt about it, Kerry not getting out of the Super 8s last summer affected the store. That only makes sense. The longer Kerry stay in the championship, the better it’s going to be for us. And it goes both ways: the better the store is doing, the better Kerry are doing because the profits are going straight back into Kerry GAA. “It’s a win-win for everybody.”
Killarney Gardai launch new School Safety Initiative
Launching the Garda School Safety Initiative campaign on Wednesday were: Dermot O’Connell (Sergeant in Charge), Garda Diane Collins (Community Policing), Garda Martina Desmond, Garda Darren Ronan and Garda Emmet Flanagan.
The high density of school traffic on New Road was the focus of a safety campaign by Gardai this week. As part of their School Safety Initiative, members of the local force set their sights on the busy street which accommodates four local schools. The aim of the campaign is to reduce the risk of serious or fatal injury to children while walking, cycling or travelling in vehicles to school and a general reduction in road traffic offences, Sergeant Dermot O’Connell explained. “Killarney Gardaí are continuing the implementation of their schools safety initiative with a further awareness campaign and targeted enforcement,” he said. The operation will ensure that children are properly restrained, will detect motorists using mobile phones while driving, as well as identify and prosecute motorists who park dangerously causing a risks to pedestrians and other road users and enforce the one way system on New Road at school drop off and collection times. “The operation will continue until Christmas, alternating between routes that experience busy school traffic, both morning and evening,” Sergeant O’Connell said.

Ireland’s greatest living explorer retires
Pat Falvey presenting the first copy of his autobiography ‘Accidental Rebel’ to Mayor of Killarney John Sheahan. Pic: Don MacMonagle.
The man known as Ireland’s greatest living explorer has retired. Cork native Pat Falvey, who now resides at the foot of Carrauntoohil, was the first mountaineer in the world to conquer the highest mountains on seven continents – not just once - but twice. Falvey’s incredible exploits are the stuff of legend. As detailed in his recently launched autobiography ‘Accidental Rebel’, Falvey risked his life on countless occasions and scaled Mount Everest North and Mount Everest South over the course of a prolific climbing career. The legendary explorer retraced the footsteps of Tom Crean and Ernest Shackleton on his ‘Beyond Endurance’ expedition to The South Pole and has led other expeditions across deserts, glaciers and jungles in the most remote regions on the planet. Tragically, 30 of his colleagues have lost their lives down through the years. Falvey is also a noted businessman. He picked up his entrepreneurial skills selling second hand clothes from an old pram on the Coal Quay in Cork at the age of 14 before becoming a millionaire in his twenties, though he later went bankrupt. The 61-year-old is still dreaming big and chasing new adventures. “My goals, though still ambitious, are different and, I believe, more balanced,” he said. “Being present in a mindful, loving way for my family is number one. I still enjoy going away and lead adventure treks every year in various parts of the world, but I also relish being in Cork and Kerry and going out on the mountains where my adventure life began. “I still love hearing people’s stories, especially from the people who come to my home at the Mountain Lodge to share their goals and aspirations with me. These are ordinary men and women who have a dream to do something extraordinary. It is a joy to mentor and guide them to make their dreams a reality and to share the skills I’ve learned over a lifetime as an adventurer and accidental rebel.”

Tourism in Kerry needs more attention BY ANNE LUCEY
€1m is being set aside for the work of the council’s tourism unit in 2019 Doubtless such a centre would be looked at as a source of cheap labour source by some in the industry. And tourism is an industry where low wages and precarious work is already one of the big ‘challenges’. But the idea of locating the college in Killarney would be to avail of the restaurant/hotel/accommodation/ jarveying, boating and guiding skills on the doorstep and gain experience in them.
The survival of the McCabe family is astonishing
Huge congratulations are due to Kerry woman Katie Hannon for her two part documentary on Maurice McCabe and his family. The survival of the McCabe family is astonishing. The RTE Prime Time programmes led by Katie remind us of what good journalism is all about. But the media have not been entirely noble in the McCabe case and in general when it comes to promoting the agendas of senior Gardai against their targets within and outside the Garda stations. McCabe was blackened, but so were other people. Even in Kerry there have been instances of division and dirty games played through the media against other Gardai and against troublesome journalists. I was the target once of a three paragraph report, without a byline or without naming me of course. In fact, it was a senior Garda, a decent Garda, who alerted me. I hadn’t even seen the crooked, twisted, nasty piece of work. But I quickly found out who wrote it. The impetus seems to have been to cast suspicion and a cloud, although this was vehemently denied and the evidence of my own eyes strongly pooh-poohed! The journalist in question knew perfectly well there was
no basis and nothing suspicious and had been told as much by the decent Garda who rang me out of concern. I never did see that follow-up report clarifying the matter! But at least I got to know who in that divided Garda station was running that journalist. Much of the problem of course is the trust and dependence the Gardai have enjoyed as ‘sources’; Journalists are at the mercy of Garda sources when it comes to crime reporting. There should however be no need for such huge reliance on sources when there is nothing to hide and there is an open culture. The openness and frankness of the PSNI in the North have long been a source of wonder to journalists working in the South. Facts and names are given out quickly and there is no scrambling around and no favour returning. I listened to the interview with the new commissioner Drew Harris when he was appointed, and I was impressed with his straight talking and frankness. And hopefully, dare I say it, this decent Protestant will turn things around. At the end of the day policing, no less than news journalism, is a profession best served straight.
Some 2.2 million tourists visited Kerry in 2017 and 2018 will have seen greater numbers again. There has to come a stage where we cry a halt to marketing until we get the basics like roads, damage to our hills, housing for staff and training right. Meanwhile, a sum of almost €1m is being set aside for the work of the council’s tourism unit in 2019, the annual budget meeting of Kerry County Council was told. The sum will provide for salaries and costs in developing adventure tourism on one hand, and accessible tourism on the other, and such. It will also provide for ‘overseas promotion’ by officials and councillors in countries such as Germany. Tralee’s main tourist attractions will continue to be Council supported in 2019. The Blennerville Windmill and Tralee Bay Wetlands will get €96,000 for staffing costs, and another €100,000 to support the operating activities. We are told there is better governance and the sum for staffing has been reduced. The Kerry County Museum is being allocated €469,000 for staffing and operation costs. There are further supports for the steam railway. There isn’t a single tourism facility in Killarney receiving this kind of direct support. Maybe it is time we called for a town museum directly funded by the council? V
It was nice to see Killarney centre stage in a new Tourism Update newsletter produced by Kerry County Council’s tourism unit. I have too often felt the tourism capital is being airbrushed out of the picture because of a drive to promote North Kerry and the coastal areas. But the Royal visit to Killarney of Charles and Camilla with then Mayor Cllr Niall Kelleher and President of the Killarney Chamber Paul O’Neill, was the top shot in the eight page production. There is even a mention that traffic management is an issue in Killarney, as it is in Kenmare as well as Dingle. Tourism needs serious attention in Kerry and elsewhere. It defies credibility that one of the country’s biggest industries does not have a more senior ministry or indeed a dedicated correspondent in either a national newspaper or a broadcaster. The old approach of slating journalists and accusing them of giving the town a bad name for reporting uncomfortable stories does no one any good. Certainly not the industry. Training is one thing that should be looked at, and this column has long argued for a tourism college in Killarney which will train people in language use - particularly the English language, as well as local history and skills.
Women are getting ahead on their own without any special treatment
There is deep unease among women at the funding of 45 women-only professorial posts in Institutes of Technology and universities over three years. These will be state jobs, but the extraordinary move by the Minister for State for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O’Connor (pictured) runs the risk of copper fastening a creeping bias against women - that gender is already a huge advantage in rising up the state sector - whether it’s health or higher education. And this creeping view now seemingly legitimised by the minister undermines the real merit of many of those women who have been promoted. Women are getting ahead on their own in the private sector, without any special treatment. What would be nice, however, as Micheline Sheehy Skeffington, who led a discrimination case against NUI Galway said, would be for some department to address the huge number of temporary contracts and precarious work women ‘enjoy’. The whole thesis of the Minister O’Connor is based on providing role models for students, so the students in universities can see women at the top of departments. But what about the bottom end? The teaching profession at primary and to a lesser extent at second level, is overwhelmingly female. Is the lack of male teachers, who can provide role models for boys and for girls in primary schools, to receive the same kind of attention?

Joe O’Connor to MC Killarney Olympian event
Gardaí in the South Kerry area have arrested a man in his 30s and seized approximately €5,000 worth of suspected cocaine, and over €13,000 in cash. Shortly after 5.30pm on Thursday last, Gardaí from the Divisional Drugs Unit executed a search warrant at a house in the Kenmare area and seized €5,000 worth of suspected cocaine, which will now be sent for analysis. During the search, Gardaí also seized over €13,000 in cash and drugs paraphernalia. The man was arrested at the scene and brought to Killarney Garda Station where he was detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996. He has since been released and a file will be prepared for the DPP. The seizure was part of an ongoing investigation into the sale and supply of drugs in the South Kerry area.

On Monday, November 26, Killarney will pay tribute to some of its elite athletes at an innovative event aimed at inspiring and educating the sportspeople of the future. ‘Strategies for Life’, which is being hosted by the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and AIB, will take place in the Great Southern Hotel and provide chamber members, local sporting clubs and aspiring athletes the opportunity to hear how successful sportspeople set goals, hold themselves accountable and overcome challenges. MC for the night will be esteemed strength and conditioning coach Joe O’Connor who recently helped his home county, Limerick, to a historic All-Ireland hurling title. Joe, who lives in Tralee, has a wealth of experience in top-level sports having previously earned plaudits for his work with the Kerry footballers, the Waterford hurlers and the Clare hurlers. He will also be a familiar face to fans of the popular RTÉ show ‘Ireland’s Fittest Family’. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, AIB Regional Manager and event organiser Tomás Griffin said the goal with this event was to create something different that was ‘genuinely about Killarney’. “Killarney punches way above its weight in relation to a lot of things,” Tomás said. “From a business point of view, it’s a great town and the Chamber of Commerce do lots of great things in that regard. But in a sporting context, we’ve had five people who have competed in the Olympic games, Gillian O’Sullivan, Paul Griffin, Ca-
thal Moynihan, Seán Casey and Peter Maher. The probability of someone becoming an Olympian is one-millionth of one percent. Killarney has a higher number of Olympic athletes than any town of its size in this country, if not on the planet. “These five come from minority sports and the town has a lot of these kinds of sports, so we said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could learn from these guys?’ – but also to recognise them.” Luckily, all five Olympians are able to attend the event and all will receive special presentations on the night. Tomás is hopeful that anyone who comes along, whether athlete or non-athlete, will pick up some invaluable life skills from these local heroes. “We’ll be getting the opinions of these guys on issues like nature versus nurture - the 10,000 hours guy versus the talent guy. I think you can see the relevance of that from business perspective as well, and why that’s important in a town like Killarney. We’ll also discuss the importance of rest and listening to your body.” AIB and the Chamber have been reaching out to clubs around the town in the hope that as many aspiring athletes, their family members and their coaches will attend and be inspired. “This event is going to be wide-ranging,” Tomás added. “And it will be very different to what’s readily available to people.” To book a spot for you, your family or your club at ‘Strategies for Life’, please RSVP chamber@killarney.ie or call 064 66 37928 before Monday, November 22.

Shoebox Appeal
Local pupils donate over 80 gift boxes to charity
V
Killarney pupils learned about the gift of giving this week as they donated over 80 boxes to the annual Shoebox Appeal. The pupils from Scoil Bhríde, Loreto National School, kindly gave a range of items, lovingly wrapped in colourful Christmas paper, to the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal, who distribute the gift boxes to underprivileged children across the world. Pupils and staff, along with their families, put together Christmas boxes, filling them with toys and everyday goods which we sometimes take for granted, Brian O’Sullivan, principal at Scoil Bhríde, explained. “The response was absolutely amazing and everybody came on-board,” he said. “We received over 80 boxes which were passed onto the Team Hope charity. We really appreciate the huge effort that everybody made. These gifts will be transported to countries like Kosovo over the coming weeks - just in time for Christmas. Thanks to everybody for making this wonderful project possible.” Charity volunteers all across Ireland will now work hard to check that every Christmas gift box meets with customs and safety requirements, then seal them up and send them on their way by truck or shipping container. It’s then delivered into a child’s hands – in hospitals, schools, shelters, churches, orphanages, community centres, mountain villages and family homes, in time for Christmas day.

New €30m water treatment plant secures national award
Kerry winners: Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme by Irish Water, in association with Kerry County Council, Nicholas O’Dwyer, Tobin Consulting Engineers and Glan Agua, took the title of Engineering Project of the Year. Gavin Reilly, associate director at Nicholas O’Dwyer, holds the winning trophy on behalf of the project team on stage.
Kerry’s new €30m water supply scheme – one of the largest in the country – has been voted national ‘Engineering Project of the Year for 2018’. The Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme, officially opened in Lough Guitane last week, now provides safe and secure water supply for over 62,000 residents as well as industry and agriculture in the region, and serves more than 1.2 million tourists who visit the region annually across Tralee, Killarney, Castleisland and Castlemaine. The scheme provides over 50 million litres of drinking water every day, with the improved quality of water available now meaning local customers have been removed from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Remedial Action List (RAL). The project by Irish Water, in association with Kerry County Council, and undertaken by Nicholas O’Dwyer Ltd., Tobin Consulting Engineers and Glan Agua Ltd., won out in the flagship category of the ninth annual Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards, held in association with ESB, at a ceremony in the InterContinental Hotel in Dublin, on Friday, November 9.
The Engineering Project of the Year category is sponsored by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and is voted for by a panel of judges and the public. “Until the completion of this project, the local water supply lacked an effective system to treat the raw water abstracted from Lough Guitane,” Eamon Gallen, Managing Director of Irish Water, said. “This meant that the areas supplied by the Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme were at risk due to the lack of sufficient water treatment.” Complicated by its scale, nature, and location, the project required advanced water treatment processes, including recycling to conserve water and the use of pumping stations and pipelines, culminated in the creation of a new sustainable supply of drinking water for residents, businesses and industry in the region, he added. “The project also included an upgraded hydroelectric power turbine and water storage of up to 15 million litres of water, which is the equivalent of six Olympic-sized swimming pools. We are delighted to receive this award,” he said.

Brassil welcomes decision to approve Respreeza under Compassionate Access Programme
Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry, John Brassil has said that the decision of the HSE to approve Respreeza under the Compassionate Access Programme for the 19 patients currently taking it is a welcome relief and a common sense result. Deputy Brassil was commenting after being informed by the Alpha-1 Foundation that the HSE has confirmed that those currently taking the drug will have access to it on a long term basis.
“This is fantastic news for the 19 people and their families. They have fought long and hard to reach this point and it is a major relief to them. “The fight to secure access to Respreeza for other suitable candidates must now continue. This was step one, a vital step, but it is part of a long term requirement to give people the drugs they need to improve their quality of life,” concluded Brassil.

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor, Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues
ENDURING POWERS OF ATTORNEY A Power of Attorney is a legal device whereby a person i.e. the Donor during his or her life allows another specifically appointed person i.e. the Attorney, to take actions on the Donor’s behalf. There are two types of Power of Attorney namely a Power of Attorney which gives a specific or general power and an Enduring Power of Attorney which takes effect on the incapacity of the Donor. An Enduring Power of Attorney also allows the Attorney to make personal care decision on the Donor’s behalf once he or she is no longer fully mentally capable of making decisions themselves. Creating an Enduring Power of Attorney involves the transfer of considerable powers from a Donor to the Attorney and there are a number of legal safe-guards to be put in place to protect the Donor from any abuses. The document which creates the Power of Attorney is required to be in a particular format and must include a statement by a Doctor verifying that the Donor had the mental capacity at the time that the document was executed to understand the effect of creating the power, a statement from the Donor themselves confirming same and a statement from a Solicitor confirming that the Donor understood the effect creating the Power of Attorney and a statement from a Solicitor that the Donor is not
acting under any undue influence. At least two people must be notified of the making of an Enduring Power of Attorney, none of whom will be the Attorney. One of the Notice Parties must be a Spouse or Civil Partner if living with the Donor.

The Attorney may not be a person under the age of eighteen, bankrupt or a person convicted of offences involving fraud or dishonesty. The Enduring Power of Attorney only comes into force when it has been registered on foot of an application to the Registrar of Wards of Court. The Enduring Power of Attorney may give general authority to the Attorney or may merely give authority to do specific acts. It is vitally important that independent legal advice is obtained prior to entering into the process of creating an Enduring Power of Attorney.

Sem students claim top science award
Talented Killarney boys Darragh Fleming, Ethan O’Neill and Colm Looney have claimed a top prize at the SciFest 2018 Final at the Marino Conference Centre in Dublin, on Friday. The 3rd year students from St Brendan’s College competed with some of the top young minds in the country and were awarded the SciFest STEM Outreach Award for their project centred on the use of science to reduce collisions between deer and vehicles. For their project, the Sem students identified locations of risk for collisions between deer and vehicles. They then investigated patterns that occurred in road crossing behaviours in deer living in the Killarney National Park. They created signage and a technological alarm system to ward off the deer and stop them from going out onto the roads. They also used other deterrents such as human hair and CDs to refract car lights into the deer’s field of vision. Darragh, Ethan and Colm secured their place at the National Final after their success at the SciFest regional final in Institute of Technology, Tralee. Sheila Porter, SciFest founder and CEO, presented the boys with their prize. Over 10,000 students participated in local and regional SciFest STEM fairs across the country this year. Since its inception in 2008, over 60,000 students have participated in the competition. Darragh, Ethan and Colm were three of 63 students who went on to exhibit 37 STEM projects at the national final. Previous entrants in SciFest have gone on to develop their projects and become leaders in the areas of science, medicine, engineering, information technology and many other fields.

Local charities to benefit from annual Rotary fundraiser Killarney Rotary Club launched its annual ‘Evening of Wine and Art’ on Wednesday Nov 7 - which will support a number of local charities. The 15th annual event will take place in The Malton Hotel on Thursday, November 29. Representatives of the charities and clubs, who are the beneficiaries of this annual event, were present at the launch. “The event is held in association with Daly’s SuperValu without whom we could not hold it every year,” Simon Lumby, Killarney Rotary President, said. “We are also delighted to have the support of Killarney Brewing with a range of their beers and they will have some exciting new products coming on stream soon.” He added that Killarney Rotary Club appreciate the help and support of these two businesses who contribute so much to this event. Killarney Rotary Club first organised the hugely successful and popular Evening of Wine and Art in 2003 and it is now regarded as one of the best nights out on the Kerry social calendar. On the night expect the chance to purchase local art as well as locally produced crafts. Live musical entertainment on the night will be by Mike Neeson. If you’re a wine buff you will be spoilt for choice with the huge number of the best wine and beer labels around. “Another highlight of the night is the exciting charity auction of artwork. “The raffle, always eagerly anticipated, is to be co-ordinated by the Irish Pilgrimage Trust who bring young people with special needs on pilgrimage and holidays to Lourdes.

Have you had your Killarney Credit Union Christmas reunion? Killarney Credit Union is inviting each and every one of its 32,000 members to have their ‘Credit Re-Union’ in time for Christmas 2018. Members can drop in to the branches in Killarney, Kenmare and Cahersiveen for their ‘Credit ReUnion’ in person, or can call up one of the friendly members of staff, and ask about budgeting tips, prudent spending and sensible borrowing over the festive period. Killarney Credit Union is embarking on the pre-Christmas ‘Credit ReUnion’ as part of its ongoing commitment to tailoring services and products to the specific needs of its members. “We are looking forward to reconnecting with those we have not seen in a while, and chatting to those members we know well, and offering them any assistance and guidance they might need with budgeting and spending tips for the Christmas period,” Helen Courtney Power of Killarney Credit Union said. “Our aim is to ensure that all of our members have a stress-free and enjoyable Christmas and that financial worries will be the last thing on their mind.” Helen also urged anyone who might need to borrow to cope with the financial burden of Christmas to avoid moneylenders at all costs, and to make Killarney Credit Union their first point of call. “We know that many might be tempted to seek out moneylenders this Christmas, but this a potentially very harmful financial decision to make,” she said. “We find that people can quickly become trapped
in a vicious circle where they need to borrow again just to meet loan repayments. “Should any of our members, including any of those who have not been active with us for a while, need to borrow a little extra, we would urge them to ask us here at Killarney Credit Union about our loans, which are very
straightforward and have fair interest rates. “There are no penalties for paying a loan back early, nor are there any hidden fees or charges on our loans. We offer both a Christmas loan and also a Personal Micro Credit Loan which is a low-cost loan that can be repaid via social welfare payments.”

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Apple to give jobs to human trafficking victims Apple has announced a programme to help human trafficking victims get behind-the-scenes jobs at its stores. The technology company has teamed up with an NGO that will help the victims pass interviews for caretaker and landscaping posts among other roles. The individuals will not be identified to Apple and will be employed by its suppliers rather than directly. But it intends to monitor the initiative. The announcement coincides with the company winning the Stop Slavery Award. The prize was given by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and accepted by Apple’s retail chief Angela Ahrendts in London. It recognises companies that are at the forefront of efforts to combat forced labour in supply chains. Judges praised the Apple’s “extremely robust” audit programme and the fact it had “openly shared its learnings with the public”.
Unilever’s chief executive, Paul Polman, was also presented with an award in recognition of the work he had done. But one campaign group described the decision to honour Apple as “a joke”. “Apple may be doing more compared to other companies but that is because it has the resources to do so,” said Li Qiang, executive director of China Labor Watch. “However, Apple isn’t doing enough, as forced labour persists in its suppliers’ factories in China.”
Trump Corner
Kerry: We have a truculent child president Former US Secretary of State John Kerry says that Americans need to elect a “serious” Democrat to replace Trump in the 2020 election, adding that the “truculent child president” is embarrassing the country abroad. Former Democratic presidential nominee Kerry was speaking in an interview with BBC Radio 4’s ‘Today’ show to promote his new memoir, ‘Every Day Is Extra’. “We have a dearth of a leadership on a global basis right now and every country is feeling the pressure of this nationalistic, populist, and in some cases very frightening, right-wing advance, which I think has to be addressed very directly,” Mr Kerry said. He also voiced his dismay that Mr Trump cancelled a trip a to AisneMarne American Cemetery and Memorial near Paris due to inclement weather. The US President later ex-
plained that the Secret Service called the visit off because the weather grounded his helicopter and a motorcade would have shut down Paris. “I was appalled that raindrops prevented him from going to pay honour to people who died in rain, and snow and gas and mud,” Kerry said. “I thought that was the reason he came to Paris.”
Never fails to entertain
“I would never have done it, never ” Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe has said that if he had known in advance what was facing him, he “would never have done it”. Mr McCabe, who retired from An Garda Síochána last month, has revealed the level of abuse he was subjected to on social media, which included pictures of a plastic rat with the caption “Maurice”. The Disclosures Tribunal found former Garda commissioner Martin Callinan and Supt David Taylor had engaged in a “campaign of calumny” against Sgt McCabe. The tribunal found that this was done in direct response to his whistleblowing regarding Garda matters. In a riveting documentary which
was aired on RTÉ One on Monday night, Mr McCabe spoke of how he had raised concerns of misconduct while he was sergeant in Bailieborough Garda station, Co Cavan. “What I was hoping for was that the issues that I reported would be investigated,” McCabe said. “And that I would get back into position as sergeant in charge, and they’d say, yes, I was right to highlight these issues. If I had to know then what was facing me, I would never have done it, never.” Mr McCabe’s wife Lorraine said she was afraid at the time that he was “getting into deep water”. “He was just pushing things too far,” she said. “It wouldn’t be me, I would have walked away.”
Denmark cuts Tanzanian aid after homophobic comments “Unacceptable homophobic comments” from a senior Tanzanian politician has led Denmark to withhold 65 million krone (€8.71m) in aid to the African nation. Danish development minister Ulla Tornaes did not name the official in question but said she was “very concerned” by the comments. As recently as last month, Paul Makonda, commissioner for the commercial capital Dar es Salaam, called on the public to report suspected gay men to the police. Makonda said he would set up a surveillance squad to track down gay people. At the time, the Tanzanian government said that Mr Makonda was expressing his personal opinion, not government policy. Homosexual acts are illegal in Tanzania and punishable by up to 30 years in prison. According to reports, statements against gay people have increased since President John Magu-
fuli’s election in 2015. In 2017, the country’s deputy health minister defended a threat to publish a list of gay people. “I am very concerned about the negative development in Tanzania. Most recently the totally unacceptable homophobic statements from a commissioner,” Ms Tornaes said in a tweet. “I have therefore decided to withhold 65 million krone in the country. Respect for human rights is crucial for Denmark.” Denmark is Tanzania’s second biggest aid donor.

Secretary quits over Highly rated teen confirms draft Brexit deal Ireland allegiance
Brexit secretary Dominic Raab has dealt a major blow to UK Prime Minister Theresa May by resigning over the proposed EU withdrawal agreement. It has been a tumultuous couple of days for May. Esther Louise McVey, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, and Shailesh Vara, a junior Northern Ireland minister, have also quit yesterday over the draft accord. It has also emerged that Junior Brexit minister Suella Braverman tendered her resignation, while Anne-Marie Trevelyan MP also stepped down from her role as parliamentary pri-
vate secretary. May had initially received a positive reaction to the draft when the EU signalled that they would be holding a speedy summit to sign off on the agreement. Things hit a speed bump, however, when Raab announce that he could not give his backing to the proposed agreement. “I cannot reconcile the terms of the proposed deal with the promises we made to the country in our manifesto,” he said. “You deserve a Brexit secretary who can make the case for the deal you are pursuing with conviction. I must resign.”
Ballybunion kite-surfer comes ashore in Clare A kite-surfer who went missing off the coast of Ballybunion on Sunday afternoon finally came to shore seven hours later - 25 nautical miles away in Kilkee, Co Clare. Fenit RNLI (Royal Navy Lifeboat Institution) were requested to launch their all-weather lifeboat at 5.34pm following reports from the Irish Coast Guard. The coast guard reported that a person had not returned from a kite-surfing excursion off the coast of Ballybunion in Co Kerry. The Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 115 from Shannon was also tasked alongside the Irish Naval vessel Le Niamh and the RNLI lifeboats to
find the missing man. Searches went on until approximately 11pm when news broke that the windsurfer had managed to make it back to land in Clare. He was subsequently transferred by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick where he received treatment after what must have been an extremely difficult experience. “This is such good news this morning and we are delighted that after the windsurfer was missing for so long yesterday evening, that this man is alive,” said Charlie Glynn, Kilrush RNLI crew member and Lifeboat Press Officer.
Talented Irish teenager Michael Obafemi has confirmed his commitment to Ireland after days of intense speculation that he would switch allegiance to England. Irish supporters were worried that Obafemi would follow the path of highly rated prospects Jack Grealish and Declan Rice, both of whom played for Ireland underage before declaring for England at senior level. Yesterday, the 18-year-old forward, who is eligible to play for England and Nigeria, clarified his position on Twitter and in a statement released by his management agency, Playerworks CSM. “Due to current speculation surrounding Michael Obafemi and as Michael’s representatives, we would like to go on record to say that we are not in talks with either Nigeria or England, nor is it something we have ever pursued,” the statement reads, as reported by Sky Sports. “Since Mark O’Toole spotted Michael early on, he, along with the other staff at Ireland, have given Michael a great opportunity, which he has enjoyed immensely. Michael was born in Ireland,
so this is the country he naturally wants to play for. “Martin O’Neill has shown great faith in Michael and he wants to repay that faith by helping the team achieve success. Michael is 100% committed to Ireland and is looking forward to an exciting future with the national team.” Yesterday afternoon, Obafemi tweeted a picture of himself in an Ireland jersey with the simple caption, “All in”.
Mayor unveils plans to pedestrianise Paris Plans to pedestrianise Paris city centre have been unveiled by Mayor Anne Hidalgo, with major landmarks such as Notre Dame Cathedral expected to be affected. The proposed plans would restrict traffic in the city’s first four districts, known as ‘arrondissements’, with electric shuttles brought in as an alternative.
The changes would take effect during Hidalgo’s next term, assuming she is re-elected. The mayor, who took office in 2014, has made reducing pollution a central part of her policy. Last month the European Environment Agency warned that air pollution caused 500,000 premature deaths in Europe every year.

A perfect day for Katrina and Paul It was like a fairy tale wedding for bride Katrina Davies and groom Paul Horan recently, as they tied the knot in Killarney. Both Katrina, who is from Killarney, and Paul from Kilcummin, said ‘I do’ in the Prince of Peace Church, Fossa, with Fr Tom Looney as chief celebrant. Katrina is daughter of Joanne Davies and her bridal party was made up of her sisters, maid of honour Ellie Davies, bridesmaid Cassie Davies, and friends Edel O’Donoghue and Ellie Roche. Her brothers Mark, Chris and Shane were also there on the day to help her celebrate. Flowergirl was niece Eabha Huggett Davies, looked fabulous in her frilly ivory dress and glitter converse to complete the style. Groom Paul was delighted to share the day with his parents Michael and Eileen Horan from Kilcummin. Bestman was his cousin Timmie Lane alongside groomsmen
and friend David Sheehan, and his cousin Kevin Dunlea. And after the ceremony, wedding photos were taken by Konrad Paprocki at the stunning Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. “The weather was fabulous, the sun was shining for the entire day,” Katrina said. “The day ran so smoothly with thanks to all the staff at the Dromhall Hotel. Ciara O’Callaghan and Michael Talbot did a fantastic job helping us plan our day. No request was too big or small. “The meal was outstanding - a five star service throughout the day and the staff were so accommodating. We had a beautiful bridal suit, and look forward to returning there for our anniversary dinner.” The happy couple enjoyed a honeymoon in Italy and are now settled in Kilcummin where they’re enjoying married life. “We are looking forward to celebrating our first anniversary together,” she said.

Young artists awarded for their creativity Some of South Kerry’s most talented young artists proved that they are a ‘force of nature’ by creating some amazing art work for the Killarney Credit Union art competition. On Saturday, youngsters in the Under 7 to Over 18 age categories, were rewarded for their efforts when presented with certificates and cash prizes, by Karena Buckley, Marketing Officer from Killarney Credit Union, at the credit union’s head office on Beech Road. The first place winners of each category will now go on to represent themselves and their schools at Chapter 23 Kerry and West Limerick Credit Unions Regional Level, on Saturday December 1 in the Manor West Hotel, Tralee, at 2pm. The first placed winners at regional level will then go on to represent Chapter 23 at the national finals in Dublin. Now in its 35th year, the competition attracts up to 50,000 entries through 300 credit unions nationwide and caters for all ages, with categories ranging from Under 7 to Over 18 and adult. There is also a special category for those with physical and intellectual disabilities. “There was a huge entry this year as we welcomed new schools from the Cahersiveen area and we would like to thank all those schools throughout South Kerry who participated in the competition,” Joy Clifford Vaughan, Youth Officer from Killarney Credit Union, said. “This year, we had first place winners from Holy Cross National School, Scoil Mhuire National School, Intermediate School Killorglin, St Brendan’s College, Loughguittane National School, St John’s National School, Kenmare, and Kerry Parents and Friends. “With a theme of ‘The Force of Nature’ this year allowed for great creativity and interpretation.”

Daniel Cronin and Pierse Leslie with their model farms displays.
Their models may have been miniature - but their plans to fundraise weren’t - as the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club (KVCVC) held an event in aid of local teenager Ian O’Connell, on Sunday. It was the first ever Miniature Model Farm event, organised by the club at the Kerry Mental Health Building, Lewis Road, with a wide range of model farms both old and new on display. And this week the club would like to say a huge thanks to everyone who set up and displayed their model farms and model cars for the event, Tom Leslie PRO, explained.
“Special thanks to our venue for hosting the event and to everyone who generously donated spot prizes for the raffle, and also those who travelled for the event,” Tom said. “We were also delighted to see Ian and his dad Mick at the show. “A presentation from the event will be made to Ian O’Connell in the coming weeks.” Their next planned event, after the clubs restored Land Rover draw this weekend, will be their annual Christmas Charity Walk on December 28. “Further details will be announced soon,” Tom added.

Model event raises funds for local teen Moon magic at Killarney Library Author Breda Joy will recreate the magic of the first moon landing at a reading of her novel ‘Eat the Moon’ at Killarney Library on Thursday, November 22, at 6.30pm. The giant steps of 1969s Apollo 11 moon landing echo throughout the new novel in which a rural Irish family is shattered by a blind act of fate. The novel examines a voyage away from the familiar for one family caught up in the reflected magic of the space race, and traces their journey back from the dark side of the moon. “From my own point of view, I love to hear authors reading from their work,” Breda said. “It really brings a novel alive to hear the story unfold in the writer’s own voice. That’s why I’m looking forward to the reading in Killarney Library. “I hope it will bring the magic of my characters and the world they live in to life.” She added that she’s also going to talk about the process of writing the book and topics like where she gets her ideas and inspiration. “This should be of interest to writers and book club members.” The journal ‘Books Ireland’, has included ‘Eat the Moon’ on its list of recommended books for Christmas. “I just love the language in this book,” reviewer Dave Lordan said on RTE’s Arena. “This is an unsentimental book. It’s also an uncynical book which is quite unusual and unfashionable, and fair play to her for that. Really enjoyed it, really recommend it.” Published by Poolbeg Press, ‘Eat the Moon’ sells at €14.99. Killarney Advertiser is giving away two copies of Breda’s book. ‘Lower VAT rate could return’- Minister The nine percent tourism VAT rate, introduced as an emergency recession measure in 2011 but scrapped in this year’s Budget, could be introduced again if serious problems arise and the industry finds itself in difficulty. That was the assurance given to over 200 hotel and hospitality sector leaders by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, at the National Tourism Forum in Killarney, on Friday afternoon. “The nine percent is something that can be implemented again if the industry runs into problems just as it happened in 2011. I know it’s scant consolation now but it happened before and it can happen again,” he said. Conscious of the upset and worry the VAT hike to 13.5 percent has caused, the Kerry TD stressed that he fought very hard to have the lower rate retained but he didn’t get the result he wanted. “It was introduced from 2011 to 2013 as a temporary measure and it was extended from 2014-2017. In 2011 we had about 6.5 million to the Republic and it’s close to 11 million this year so it did work. “There has been huge success in tourism in recent years and to manage the increase in visitor numbers, we have to provide a funding stream to invest in infrastructure, product, overseas marketing and in people as well as those who are providing vital access,” the Minister told the Let’s Talk Tourism forum. He added that the Government also needed to find extra funding to tackle the ‘massive housing crisis’ and the problems in the health service, and it had to come from somewhere. Minister Griffin acknowledged that smaller businesses in more rural areas might find it harder to cope

with the hike to 13.5 percent but the difficulty is when you’re setting a VAT rate, you can’t differentiate between Dublin city centre and rural Ballinskelligs, in South Kerry. “The thing is those that charge more are paying more in VAT,” he said. He added that the one consolation was that the increase had been ‘well flagged’ so businesses had time to prepare.
Kerry County Council Chief Executive, Moira Murrell, told the forum that the challenge that follows the VAT increase is to ensure that businesses in more remote areas can cope. She said there are more funding streams now available to local government and if the extra finance generated includes the greater take in VAT, at least something positive was coming out of it as the council can reinvest in communities.

When the cold sets in only must-do jobs are done Cold is setting in and the time we spend outside is decreasing, therefore only must-do jobs are done! One of those, if you have not already done it, is to take in tubers. Here in Kerry it is often not the cold which will kill off tubers, rather it is the wet. Tuberous plants such as dahlias and begonias are very susceptible to waterlogging as well as frost. When the foliage has died down, as, by now, it has, take up the tubers, rinse to remove excess soil and leave to dry. Once dry place into clean, dry sand or peatmoss, in a frost-proof shed, for the winter. Alternatively, dahlias can be earthed up outside in a bank of well-draining soil/sand/peat moss or a combination, but ideally they should be under cover. As the weather gets colder it is important to think of our friends outside, that is, birds and creatures such as hedgehogs and shrews. There are so many bird feeds and accessories to choose from these days – there is a feed for every bird, and a feeder for every budget. Robins do well on a diet of seed and protein in the form of dried mealworms – yum! Fat balls are excellent for birds to keep their fat reserves high, but never feed them fat from your own table - almost everything we eat is MUCH too salty for birds, and can cause heart attacks
very suddenly. There are great feeders on the market these days made from steel, which are much more durable than their plastic counterparts, and there are also hygienic ones, which are easy to fill and self-cleaning. Feeders which are squirrel-proof are worth considering, more so as a crow deterrent than squirrels Remember that water is also essential for birds and other animals. Having a water feature in the garden will be of great help to them. Now is a good time to clean any water features you may have – I know blanket weed was a problem this year, and it’s dying remains can clog up filters. Cut away, or prune, water plants which are getting too big, and ensure water pump filters are clean. It is a quick and easy, if sometimes cold, job, but well worth the effort. There is nothing worse than the remorse of not doing it and finding all your expensive kit in bits the following year. Pumps can be left running over winter, unless your water feature is very shallow. Keeping water moving will prevent it freezing over.

Next-Generation 2019 Porsche 911 Spied in Killarney
Volkswagen:
We’ve bought batteries for 50 million cars
Volkswagen chief executive Herbert Diess has told the German media that his car-making giant has already procured batteries for an astonishing 50 million electric vehicles. Speaking recently, Diess revealed the full-scale ambitions for the Volkswagen Group when he announced that the car-maker’s vehicle platforms had been “booked” for 50 million cars and that battery procurement for the number of battery cells this involved has already been made. It was revealed this week that Volkswagen was working on a ‘cheap’ pure-electric Tesla-rival that would sell for about €20,000, but today’s announcement demonstrates just how quickly the car giant will switch to battery-powered vehicles.
The next generation Porsche 911 was spied testing in Killarney this week. As you can see, the car maintains its fabulous silhouette, without straying from the shape that has made it an automotive icon. This next generation Porsche 911 was spotted testing with other VW products, from a pair of Porsche Panameras to a VW Polo GTI and all in between. A pre-production Audi e-tron pure electric SUV was also among the group. Killarney has been a common stomping ground for manufactures to test new products over the years, offering the best driving roads in Europe and challenging winter weather conditions not to mention the superb location and hospitality Killarney has to offer. For all you car enthusiasts out there, keep your eyes peeled.
Aston Martin DBX SUV exposed
Aston Martin is clearly serious about the mud-slinging ability of its upcoming DBX luxury SUV. Indeed, if you thought you were only going to see a jackedup version of the Aston Martin Rapide barely capable of mounting kerbs at shopping centres and providing the rich and famous another expensive SUV to flit between the art gallery and the ballet, think again. Based on the latest images revealed by the British sports car brand, the Aston Martin DBX appears to be a serious attempt at an all-road SUV. Expected to go on sale in late 2019, the Aston Martin DBX development car was flogged around a demanding ‘Welsh Rally stage’ says the company. It’s the beginning of global development regime that will take in a diverse (and extreme) range of environments from the deserts of the Middle East to the Arctic tundra and, of course, regular Aston haunts like the German autobahn and Nürburgring. As the UK car-maker points out, the new SUV must “perform with the verve and poise of a true Aston Martin” but also have convincing off-road chops and be able to tow something equally expensive.

The Killarney Outlet Centre welcomes a very special guest, Santa Claus, who will be taking up residence throughout the month of December. Each weekend from Saturday December 1 until Sunday 16, kids can come and visit Santa in his very own magical grotto on the ground floor between 1pm and 6pm and will also receive a fabulous gift and a professional 5x7 photograph to cherish. There will also be lots of fun and games for the kiddies including giant Jenga, Connect Four, a bouncy castle and slide, obstacle courses, and lots more. To help you find the perfect gift for loved ones, friends or family, there will be gift stalls set up every Saturday and Sunday throughout December offering a decadent array of local Irish food produce and traditional and authentic crafts. “Christmas is such a wonderful time, and everyone is welcome to call into the Killarney Outlet Centre and enjoy the Christmas festivities whilst doing a bit of Christmas shopping,” Paul Sherry, General Manager at the Killarney Outlet Centre, said. “Also, there is an extra special atmosphere in Killarney this time of year due to the renowned Christmas in Killarney festival, one of the premium Christmas festivals in the country, which attracts visitors from all over Ireland and abroad.” For up-to-date offers, visit the Killarney Outlet Centre Facebook page.

gined album. On the album front Rock Gods Muse go head to head with Olly Murs. Olly’s sixth, studio set titled ‘You Know I Know’ also comes with a second disc of his greatest hits. On The Box
Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the gang are back in the first teaser trailer for Toy Story 4 this week. The trailer shows the toys dancing in a circle along with a brand new character, Forky. The film’s official synopsis has also been released. “Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie,” it reads. So with the latest Toy Show 4 news what better time than now to check out The Pixar Story on Netflix this weekend. A Pixar Story is a look at the first years of Pixar Animation Studios - from the success of “Toy Story” and Pixar’s promotion of talented people, to the building of its East Bay campus, the company’s relationship with Disney, and its remarkable initial string of eight hits. The contributions of John Lasseter, Ed Catmull and Steve Jobs are profiled. The decline of two-dimensional animation is chronicled as three-dimensional animation rises. Hard work and creativity seem to share the screen in equal proportions.

If roses grow in Heaven Lord, Please pick a bunch for me, Place them in Mena’s arms, And tell her they’re from me.
We would love to put on paper, The feeling in our heart, But the feeling is too deep today, We don’t know where to start.
Tell her that I love and miss her, And when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek, And hold her for a while.
Although we cannot see you, You’re with us night and day, For you we have a special love, No one can take away.
Because remembering her is easy, I do it everyday, There is a ache within my heart, That will never go away.
All our life we will miss you, As the years do come and go, In our hearts you will live forever, Because we miss you so.

Players fed up with fixtures farce Player A
The O’Donoghue Cup looks set to run until Christmas.
EXCLUSIVE Adam Moynihan
Sport
The East Kerry Board’s decision to fix the O’Donoghue Cup first round game between Dr Crokes and Fossa for Sunday, December 9 means that the competition is unlikely to be wrapped up before Christmas Day. Players from certain clubs are now being forced to play from January right up to the end of December; a 12-month campaign with virtually no off-season. And we thought last year’s tournament was bad… Well, it was. Holders Dr Crokes refused to field a team for their semi-final clash with Legion because it was fixed for the week before their Munster final against Nemo. This year, in a direct response to that particular situation, the East Kerry Board passed a motion stating that no club in a provincial decider can be asked to play O’Donoghue Cup the weekend before. With Crokes facing Miltown/Malbay next Sunday (November 25), this weekend was off the table, so Fossa v Crokes will now take place two weeks after the Munster final. A lot of people are unhappy with this arrangement as it means that several other clubs have to hang around until Christmas to finish up for the year. This time last year I floated the idea of getting rid of the Super League and playing the opening rounds of the O’Donoghue Cup at the start of the season. This week I spoke to six prominent local footballers from six different clubs and asked them for their thoughts on that particular idea, and on the fixture debacle in general. Here’s what they had to say.
“I think it’s a brilliant competition and players love it, but both the players and the competition were Players have a lot of disrespected a bit this year. It’s not fair to expect them to be playing into other commitments & December and possibly January. It’s too much to ask. There are player I think they’re being welfare issues there. overlooked by the board. “There’s a disconnect between the East Kerry Board and what the East Kerry Board want, and the players and what the players want. I think the board are quite happy to have this running so late because there’s less going on and there’s more coverage of it, but they’re totally overlooking players as people. “Players have a lot of other commitments and I think they’re being overlooked by the board. “The other element is that it’s a 12-month season. There’s no break, and there’s burnout both mentally and physically from it. I find it very difficult at this time of year because pitches are heavier, days are darker, the weather is shite. It’s not an enjoyable time to play. “I’m very surprised the O’Donoghue Cup wasn’t sorted out this year. Last year the board implemented a ‘next available date’ policy and because of that a number of clubs didn’t want to play certain weekends. But the board held a hard line and basically said, ‘This fixture is made, if you’re not going to play you’ll be thrown out of the competition and you’ll be fined’. “The Crokes were thrown out and I don’t think that was fair given what they’ve done for the competition over the last few years. “This year there was a complete change because of the East Kerry team. East Kerry were in the County Championship and while they were involved, any O’Donoghue Cup games involving players in the East Kerry team were not played. There were plenty of free weekends and they weren’t taken. “With the way that the calendar is in Kerry, where we have more competitions than any other county, the East Kerry Board couldn’t afford to be letting free weekends go and expect to have the O’Donoghue Cup finished at any sort of a decent time. “I think there could have been O’Donoghue Cup games played before the County Championship started and also in gap weeks during the County Championship. I know if you’re East Kerry team management, ideally you’d like to keep guys together in those off weeks but there’s a bigger picture there in terms of getting the whole thing finished by the end of November or something reasonable like that.”

Sport Player B “You want a set time for games; April was brilliant for us. Somebody asked me to go on a stag next April and I said I can’t, because I know for a fact that we’re playing Club Championship for three or four weeks in a row. And that’s set. “November and December should be time that you’re able to go away with the lads. That’s what frustrates fellas; waiting around on a Saturday or Sunday and not knowing what’s going to happen next week. It’s cruel on players, really. “Crokes always, in my eyes, hold the East Kerry Championship to ransom because they’re in Munster and they can’t play their games. Everybody else is pissed off then. There must be a better way. “The Super League is just a series of glorified challenge games. Maybe they should try to play two games of East Kerry Championship just before April instead.”
Player C “It’s a disaster. They should be trying to play off a few rounds of it early – during the summer or before the summer. There are plenty of weekends off to play it. It’ll end up now, as it always does, with the clubs having hardly any pre-season. “The pitches are poor at this time of year. You’d want to be finished by the end of October, not to mind having to go after Christmas. They need to do something about it.
Player D “I think the season is far too long as a whole. It’s 11 months and it needs to be more compact. Whether that means games being played midweek or earlier in the year, I don’t know. But it’s dragging on way too long. “It’s unfair on players and on management. I understand that Crokes going far is stalling it but there has to be something done about it. The people involved are putting their whole lives on hold for an amateur sport, and they’re getting grief then if they’re not doing well. “I don’t know what the East Kerry Board’s thoughts are. Is it because they’d be losing money (if the games were played midweek or earlier in the year)? But the players have to come first. “I’d be all for (playing O’Donoghue Cup games instead of Super League). Let’s be honest, the Super League is a pre-season tournament. It’s a warm-up. Teams can play friendlies any day of the week; Super League is only taking up weekends. “Maybe it might not fit into Crokes’ schedule when they’re likely to be playing the All-Ireland series into March, but sure they opted out of the O’Donoghue Cup last year because it wasn’t fitting into their schedule then either. Something has to change and teams are just going to have to grin and bear it.”
“It’s down to the people who are making the fixtures, the East Kerry Board. They have to make a compromise and put some midweek fixtures into play, and bring some of the games forward. “It’s hard to get motivated at this time of year. Take Rathmore for example. They played Friday night against Spa and that was their first game out in seven weeks. Now they’re waiting around for another five weeks to play again. It’s hard to stay at the top of your game. You’re hanging around in the winter months when you’d like to be doing other activities. From a player’s point of view, it’s certainly not ideal. “I think every player will be happier if they make the season shorter.”
Player E “My team is already out of the championship so it doesn’t really affect me personally, but if we were still in it I’d think it’s a disgrace. We started training at the start of January this year - some teams started in November/December last year. If we were still in it going into Christmas I think my team and I would be fairly sick of it! “At the end of the day, it’s an amateur sport but you’re sacrificing things in your life, almost like you’re a professional player (weddings, parties, holidays etc.) “Maybe playing (some O’Donoghue Cup) at the start of the year could work, but having East Kerry Championship before Club Championship starts might not be a great idea as teams peak at different times. They might want to focus totally on one competition rather than two important championships so close together. But it’s definitely worth trying! “I think Super League should be scrapped though. My club are finished for the year and aren’t training, but we still have a game left in the Super League and if we win that (if it’s even played) we still have another game left! Super league games are just like challenge matches really and are just there to experiment with tactics and to give players a chance to show themselves.”
Player F “It’s different for us (Dr Crokes) because if we manage to win the Munster final, our season will be carrying over into next year and we’ll be training anyway. So personally I don’t really care about playing up until Christmas. I think we’re just used to it at this stage. “But I can see it from other teams’ perspectives. Some teams played their last game in August/September. I understand that they’re training for eight or nine weeks in a row with no games. “Our situation is different. Two weeks ago we were talking and we realised that if we won all our games, we’d have eight games before Christmas. People get tired. But we haven’t won the O’Donoghue Cup in four years so it’s not something taken for granted in Crokes. We were available to play the Fossa game earlier in the year but the East Kerry Board pulled it. “Even if they scrapped the Super League and gave fellas January and February off, you’d have a chance to go away for the a couple weeks at the start of the year.”
Rathmore won the O’Donoghue Cup in 2017. Players across East Kerry have voiced their dismay that this year’s competition will run into late December.

Champagne football from the Crokes Eamonn Fitzgerald It was champagne football by Dr Crokes in last Sunday’s Munster SFC semi-final. They beat The Barrs from Cork 5-20 to 1-11 and gladdened the hearts of the 1,577 spectators who braved the heavy showers. There were many firsts in this game. This was the highest score recorded by a Croke senior team that I witnessed following the team for the past 60 years and what is more remarkable is that all of these scores were recorded from play. In all, 11 Croke players shared the scoring exploits and I cannot recall any wide. The Barrs depended on Stephen Sherlock for the most part to notch scores. He scored three 45s and two frees as well as one point from play. Eoin McGreevey was their goal scorer. Crokes are through to their 10th Munster club final, the 7th time this decade and their 3rd in a row. The Barrs started the brighter and won most of the possession in the opening seven minutes, but they shot a few wides and also missed two goal chances. They played their 15 players in their orthodox positions and did not use a sweeper. This suited Crokes as they could play their own game plan. In the 8th minute, Brian Looney uncorked the champagne bottle with the first of his three points. It was vintage stuff to delight the palates of the large Croke band of spectators and all the Barrs could do was wonder how far behind they were with just their Cork title to savour. All 15 Crokes who started and the six subs who got a run excelled. I was particularly impressed with the performance of Johnny Buckley, who dominated midfield and scored a smasher of a goal. Tony Brosnan and David Shaw continue to impress and I am confident both will make the new Kerry panel under Peter Keane. They are very direct, breaking at the right moment for the long kick pass, then taking one look at the post and the score is inevitable. They are a joy to watch in action. Shaw scored 1-3 and Brosnan scored four points and that was all done in 44 minutes before Pat O’Shea emptied the bench and withdrew this talented duo. Crokes led by eight points to one when a speculative lob deceived Shane Murphy and Eoin McGreevey notched a badly needed goal for the Cork side. Brian Looney responded immediately with his 3rd point followed quickly by that net-ripping goal from Johnny Buckley. Daithí Casey, his midfield partner, followed his example by raising a green flag at the end of the half. The game was over as a contest at half-time when Crokes led 2-11 to 1-3. Both midfielders and all the forwards bar Kieran O’Leary had scored at that stage. Kieran was top scorer against Moyle Rovers (2-2)

but he had a different role on Sunday last. Listed at full forward, he played very deeply creating scoring chances for his inside forwards and he did it to perfection. He created so many scores in an unselfish display. The second half was a repeat of the first half as The Barrs tried to get back into the game. They did score seven points in all but Crokes just kept scoring freely. Gooch came on for Tony Brosnan and kicked three lovely points and as usual Jordie was in the right place to snatch a goal. Micheál Burns also scored his goal before he came off for David Shaw. One must give due credit to the defenders who shut out quite a few goal chances. Payno and Fionn Fitzgerald will be very happy with their defensive displays. Crokes will play Miltown/Malbay in the Munster final in Limerick on November 25 and will most likely play their O’Donoghue Cup game on the following weekend. Scorers for Dr Crokes: T Brosnan (0-4); D Shaw (13); M Burns, D Casey, J Kiely (1-1 each); B Looney, C Cooper (0-3 each); G White, J Buckley, G O’Shea, K O’Leary (0-1 each). Scorers for St Finbarr’s: S Sherlock (0-6, 0-3 ‘45s, 0-2 frees); E McGreevey (1-0); R O’Mahony (0-2); I Maguire, C Dennehy, D O’Brien (0-1 each). Dr Crokes: S Murphy; J Payne, M Moloney, F Fitzgerald; D O’Leary, G White, S Doolan; J Buckley, D Casey; M Burns, G O’Shea, B Looney; D Shaw, K O’Leary, T Brosnan. Subs: A O’Sullivan for Moloney (30); C Cooper for Brosnan (42); J Kiely for D Shaw (44); M Potts for Doolan (49); P Clarke for Buckley (52); J Lyne for Burns (53) St Finbarr’s: J Kerins; D Quinn, R O’Dwyer, G O’Connor; C Lyons, C Scully, C Dennehy; I Maguire, E Comyns; D O’Brien, M Shields, E Dennehy; E McGreevey, C Keane, S Sherlock. Kilcummin through to Munster final
Kilcummin had a big win against a poor Killmacthomas team, winning by 2-17 to 0-1. They have now qualified to meet Fermoy in the Munster IFC, probably in Mallow on November 25. This competition has been dominated by Kerry clubs so Kilcummin will travel with confidence, facing Fermoy who defeated Moyne-Templetuohy 2-6 to 0-8 on Sunday last. Fermoy went through the second half without scoring but they expect to have their three injured players back for the Kilcummin game. A goal by top scorer Noel Duggan just before halftime put Kilcummin ahead 1-7 to no score. Kelvin Teahan and Pádraig Nagle did the approach work for Noel. Mike O’Shea, who came on as a sub, scored Kilcummin’s second goal. Willie Maher will be very pleased that no fewer than 10 players shared the scoring. You can only play the opposition in front of you. Fermoy will be a much tougher task. Congratulations to the club members whose presentation and organisation of the game was first class and much appreciated by the attendance of over 650 spectators.
Beaufort
Beaufort had a runaway victory over Ballylooby-Castlegrace, 5-16 to 1-9, in the Munster JFC semi-final at Cahir on Sunday last. Kilgarvan were beaten in the Munster JHC quarter-final against Tournafulla, 1-22 to 2-9.
James Weldon
Delighted but not surprised to hear that James Weldon has been appointed as head coach of the Irish Ladies basketball squad. I readily recall James as a 12-year-old first year student spending every spare minute during school breaks in Killarney Community College shooting baskets on the outside court. We wish him every success. He deserves to do well.

There were smiles all around as MC Botty went into the crowd and pulled two special guests onto the floor: Neil O’Brien and Gerry
Tuason, the proud fathers of American stars Seán and Justin. Neil and his wife Terry made the long journey from Pennsylvania to see their son play, while Gerry came all the way from San Francisco. Neil and Gerry went head-to-head in a highly-entertaining shooting comp and the latter just about completed the challenge first, much to the delight of Justin who rushed onto the court to congratulate his old man. (My favourite part was when Tuason Sr flamboyantly dribbled the ball behind his back, which wasn’t very practical considering that it was supposed to be a race. Now we know where Justin gets his sense of showmanship from.) Speaking after the game, Justin joked that he was concerned for his dad’s safety. “I was scared he was gonna get hurt,” he said. “The dude is old, man. I thought he was gonna pull a muscle or something. Luckily we shot the day before. That was the first time he had picked up a ball in years.” Later, in the fourth quarter, the younger Tuason was responsible for the other highlight of the night when he stole

Before this game had even tipped off, the Waterford Vikings had the look of a team who weren’t expecting much from their trip to Killarney. Basketball warm-ups seem fairly laid back to me anyway (it’s hard to imagine a footballer, for example, doing a prematch drill with a pair of headphones on) but the visitors looked especially relaxed as they loosened out ahead of Saturday evening’s encounter. To be fair to the Vikings, it must be hard to get fired up for a difficult road game considering the start they’ve had. Prior to Saturday they had lost all nine of their league fixtures, including a 73-102 home defeat to the Lakers in September. In short, the Vikings had little cause for optimism. As it panned out, things went pretty much to script for the Lakers at the Auracle, despite the best efforts of Vikings centre Daniel Noe who was the game’s top scorer with 29 points. Unfortunately for the Virginia native, he had little or “Noe” help from his teammates (lol). Between them the Vikings shot three air balls in the opening four minutes

the ball at half court, attacked the basket and elevated for the two-handed slam. We don’t see too many in-game dunks around these parts and it was certainly a bright spark in an otherwise unremarkable game. “I had all the motivation I needed with dad in the crowd,” Tuason said. “That was my first one in Killarney too. I was due one – I can’t just be dunking in lay-up lines!” Dutchman Papito Hersisia impressed for the Lakers, finishing up with 28 points in a strong overall performance. Papito’s girlfriend was also in town to see him play. The Lakers might want to fly her over on a weekly basis if he’s going to be putting up numbers like that. The result means that the Lakers remain joint second in the Southern Conference, level with the Limerick Celtics (8-2) but with a game in hand. Cormac O’Donoghue’s team have their sights set on leaders Ballincollig (11-0) and Tuason, never short on confidence, thinks that this Lakers outfit have a real chance of winning silverware this season.

Kerry still head & shoulders above Munster rivals Adam Moynihan Kerry’s three representatives in the Munster Club Football Championships all had monster wins last weekend, defeating their opponents by a combined margin of 62 points. It may seem startling at a glance but in reality it’s par for the course, particularly at intermediate and junior level where clubs from the Kingdom have dominated for over a decade. With Dr Crokes cutting wreck at senior level, Kerry could well be on for a clean sweep of senior, intermediate and junior championships in 2018. In fact, if recent form is anything to go by, the treble is the most likely outcome. Crokes qualified for their seventh Munster final this decade with a terribly one-sided victory over St Finbarr’s on Sunday. The Killarney side racked up 5-20 (all from play) as they put the Cork champions to the sword. Crokes will face St Joseph’s Miltown/Malbay (Clare) in the senior decider and Pat O’Shea’s team are 1/25 to prevail. Kilcummin had an equally emphatic win in their intermediate semi-final as they kept Kilmacthomas of Waterford scoreless for a full 48 minutes. They eventually ran out 2-23 to 0-1 winners and the Kerry men will now take on Fermoy in the Munster final. Unsurprisingly, they’re odds-on favourites to lift the cup. At junior level, Kerry champions Beaufort travelled to Tipperary last Saturday to face Ballylooby-Castlegrace. Beaufort managed to keep their clean sheet intact until the 20th minute, by which stage they were already 12 points up. They ended up winning by 5-16 to 1-9. This was a quarter-final tie so the wider picture is less clear-cut but Beaufort certainly appear to be the team to beat in Munster.
Pictured above: Pádraig Nagle gets his shot away under pressure from his marker. Pics: Séamus Healy.
It’s great to see Kerry teams doing so well but the one-sided nature of the Munster football championships these days is quite sad. Fair enough, Nemo beat Crokes last year so the senior hasn’t all been one-way traffic, but Kerry teams have won 11 out of the last 12 intermediates and 12 of the last 14 juniors. Teams coming out of other counties must dread the Munster championship. Getting a hammering from the Kerry representatives isn’t exactly much of a reward for winning your county’s most prestigious tournament. The championship structure down here certainly goes some way towards explaining Kerry’s supremacy at club level. Playing on divisional teams in the senior championship gives players from intermediate and junior clubs invaluable exposure to high quality football. Kilcummin, for example, had seven or eight starters on the East Kerry team who got to the county semi-final. You can’t expect an intermediate club from Waterford to compete with that. I suppose the bottom line is that the standard of football is higher in Kerry than elsewhere in Munster but you still expect more from Cork. The rivalry between the province’s two most successful counties is fairly flat at the moment, as evidenced by the non-event that was this year’s Munster final. Kerry won the first final at the new Páirc Uí Chaoimh by 17 points and although victory is always satisfying (especially against your neighbours), no one wants to see blow-out wins like that. Or the one we got in Lewis Road on Sunday. Perhaps we should be careful what we wish for but a renaissance in Cork football might not be the worst thing in the world.

The Player’s Perspective “We kicked 17 wides so that’s a big minus for the day. But you don’t want a perfect performance in the semi-final. It gives us something to work on. We need to get a little bit more clinical in front of goal.” - Noel Duggan of Kilcummin on his side’s 2-17 to 0-1 victory over Kilmacthomas
“(The tournament odds are) definitely not something that we’d be looking up. I don’t even know any other team left outside of Munster. We’ve just been concentrating on Kilrush first of all, then Kilmacthomas and Fermoy are our only focus now.” - The corner forward on the fact that Kilcummin are now 11/10 favourites to win the All-Ireland

Tweet Of The Week Lewis Hamilton won the F1 Brazil Grand Prix, sealing the constructors title for Mercedes at the Interlagos racetrack in Sao Paulo, Brazil last Sunday. Hamilton took advantage of Max Verstappen’s collision with Esteban Ocon to take victory. Max Verstappen labelled Esteban Ocon a “f****** idiot” after the Red Bull driver was robbed of a brilliant triumph following a sensational collision at the closing stages of the Brazilian Grand Prix. Verstappen was in complete control of the race after passing both Mercedes and both Ferrari cars early on. But it was Lewis Hamilton who claimed the 10th victory of his championship-winning campaign, after Verstappen Force India’s Ocon and Verstappen’s coming together. Ocon, running way down the order, bizarrely raced wheel-to-wheel at 200mph with the leader before banging into the rightrear of Verstappen’s car through the Senna Esses. The force of the hefty impact on lap 43 sent Verstappen into a spin, and with the Dutchman facing the wrong way, Hamilton sailed by to resume the lead. Verstappen continued on to take second. Kimi Raikkonen finished third for Ferrari, but it was not enough to stop Hamilton’s Mercedes team from winning their fifth-consecutive constructors’ championship.

Defending champion Sebastien Ogier goes into this weekend’s Rally Australia with a chance to clinch his sixth World Rally Championship in a row. Thierry Neuville, a runner-up four times but never a champion, hopes to change the world order. Neuville led the series for much of the season but Ogier’s win in Britain and a second place in Spain has given the Frenchman 204 points, three ahead of Neuville, heading into the final rally of the championship. Neuville said, “I’ve been second many times in the championship now, we are so close to the main goal. If we need to take more risks because we need to pass Sebastien we’re going to try,” the Belgian driver added, “we’ll take the maximum risks.” Ogier says the feeling is mutual when it comes to his main rival. “We are different, definitely, but most important we’re in a great fight together and respect each other for that,” Ogier said. “It’s about trying to beat each other and do it with respect.” Ott Tanak of Estonia sits 23 points behind and with 30 points for a win in Australia, and other results going his way, he could also capture the world title. Citroen’s Craig Breen goes into this weekend 9th place in the championship after a run of bad luck will be hoping to finish the season on a high.
