Killarney legend Weeshie laid to rest BY ADAM MOYNIHAN Prominent figures from the world of sports, media and politics joined mourners in Killarney on Wednesday morning to say a poignant farewell to one of the town’s favourite sons. The name of legendary broadcaster Weeshie Fogarty was synonymous with the town of Killarney and his death on Sunday has left a dark cloud over the town and its citizens. Hundreds of people converged on O’Shea’s Funeral Home to pay their respects on Tuesday evening and hundreds more flocked to the church for the Funeral Mass on Wednesday morning. When Kerry won the All-Ireland in 1997, an emotional Weeshie famously said the scenes in Croke Park were so beautiful that it was “like standing in Aghadoe and looking out on the lakes of Killarney”. It was only fitting, therefore, that he was ultimately laid to rest in Aghadoe Cemetery where his headstone overlooks the town and the lakes he loved so well. “He was a fantastic man,” said Fergal Moynihan, Chair-
man of Weeshie’s beloved Killarney Legion GAA Club. “I first came across Weeshie when I was seven or eight years of age and he was training the Legion underage teams. He was very positive. He always focussed on the positive things people could bring to the table and he was a great influence around the club. Anything you asked him to do, he would help you without hesitation. “Even when he was sick and confined to the house, he used to send me emails encouraging me and giving me advice. It just showed how much the club meant to him. He was always thinking about the Legion. “He’ll be sorely missed. But his children and his grandchildren are still heavily involved in the club and I’ve no doubt that they’ll carry on his tradition.” Weeshie was best known as a broadcaster and commentator on Radio Kerry but he was also a talented goalkeeper, coach and referee. He won the O’Donoghue Cup with Legion in 1967 as
well as four County Championships (1965, 1968, 1969, 1970) and an All-Ireland (1971) with his district team, East Kerry. He also won junior and senior All-Irelands with Kerry in 1967 and 1969. When injury brought his playing career to a premature end, Weeshie became a referee and went on to call three successive All-Ireland semi-finals in 1981, 1982 and 1983. He also has the distinction of issuing the first yellow card in the history of the GAA when the association trialled the use of cards in 1979. The much-loved commentator and presenter of Radio Kerry’s Terrace Talk programme was highly regarded within the industry and won numerous awards for his broadcasting skills. He was inducted into the McNamee Awards Hall of Fame in 2016. He is survived by his wife Joan, children Denise, Carolann and Kieran, son-in-law Glenn, granddaughters Lucy and Eva, sister Sheila, brothers-in-law, sisters-inlaw, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends.
“They have lost everything” BY MICHELLE CREAN
Killarney people are rallying for one of their own this week after a local man lost his family home in a house fire in America. Patrick Doona (35), from Pinewood Estate, his wife Patrice and children Rohan (11) and one-year-old daughter Constantina have been left devastated after a fire destroyed their home in San Diego, California – leaving them with just the clothes on their back. His young daughter, who was at home sick with her American grandmother, was lucky to get out alive as the flames engulfed the family home, on Monday November 12. The couple had recently moved from Woodlawn NY to California to start a new life and had poured thousands into renovating their home, including solar panels, timber floors and new windows. However, according to Patrick’s parents, Denis and Bridie Doona from Pinewood Estate, there has been a huge outpouring of support for Patrick and his family in both America, where he has lived for 13 years, and from the people of Killarney, as well as online through fundraising page GoFundMe, which has so far raised almost €15,000 of its €30,000 target.
His father Denis explained to the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday) that the family home is hundreds of miles away from the recent devastating fires in California which killed over 80 people, left hundreds missing and thousands homeless. “They weren’t even in the fire zone - that’s the thing about it,” Denis said. “Patrick is in Southern California which is hundreds of miles from the other fires.” On the day Patrick and his wife travelled to get medicine for their baby. However, with almost 40 degree heat and 50 mph winds – something triggered the fire. Denis explained that when Patrick and Patrice returned to the house, which was made of timber, it was completely gone. “I got a shock when he phoned on Tuesday last. Everything went to ashes – that was the hardest part. They have nothing left just the clothes on their back. “His mother-in-law was in the house with the baby. She went outside to see why the dogs were barking and realised that the house was on fire. She then ran out with the baby as the fire engulfed the house. “20 units of the fire brigade and two helicopters rushed to the extinguish the fire to stop it spreading further.
Pictured are Denis and Bridie Doona from Pinewood Estate, Killarney, parents of Patrick Doona who lost everything in a house fire in California last week.
The fire brigade investigation said the cause of the fire is inconclusive so he’s not sure if he’s covered with insurance.” Bridie added that Patrick’s mother-in-law was lucky to get to safety with the baby. “She was lucky to get out alive with the baby. Constantina had just turned one on November 6, and they had a family party days before. All the presents are gone in the fire.” Denis and Bridie have thanked the local community for supporting Patrick and his family through the online charity page. Spectacular Tomies walk gets green light BY ADAM MOYNIHAN

Ring for this fantastic gesture and we are confident that Killarney will rise to the challenge of creating yet another exceptional gem for Irish tourism through the looped walk at Tomies.” The Government has rubber-stamped €500,000 for the development of the Tomies Wood car park and walk, while
a further €208,000 has been approved for a major upgrade of the Dingle Way. “This is great news for the tourism industry in Kerry,” said Junior Minister Brendan Griffin TD. “It is crucial that we invest in such world class locations to ensure that they can facilitate visitors sustainably so that everyone can enjoy
the experience when they go there.” The Killarney funding will allow for car parking and access to Tomies Wood and the breath-taking O’Sullivan’s Cascade as well as path maintenance and restoration on the Dingle Way, which is a huge attraction and economic driver throughout the Dingle Peninsula.
V
There was cause for celebration in Killarney this week as the government announced €500,000 funding for a new looped walk at one of the town’s most renowned beauty spots. Local tourism industry chiefs have been working tirelessly on the development of the stunning walking trail, which will run along the shores of the iconic Lakes of Killarney and encompass some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. When complete, the 9km trail will wind through rich woodlands on the slopes of the 735m-tall Tomies mountain and run along the shores of Lough Lein and the beautiful O’Sullivan’s Cascade. The trail is steeped in Irish mythology with Tomies Wood said to have been the summer hunting grounds of warrior hunter Fionn MacCumhaill. Legend also has it that the cairn of stones on the summit of Tomies is the burial place of an ancient Irish chieftain. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President, Paul O’Neill, said the half a million in State funding will allow a long-time dream to be realised for everybody associated with the project. “It is fantastic news and a wonderful way to end what has been a hugely successful year for tourism in Killarney,” he said. “We are very grateful to Minister Brendan Griffin and Minister Michael
“It’s hard to find words to express how grateful and thankful I am”
More than €375,000 raised so far for Ian O’Connell Killarney teenager Ian O’Connell - who has been left incapacitated from the neck down following a cycling accident last year - this week thanked the public for helping raise a whopping €375,000. This week Ian (17), who will shortly be moving to a new specially adapted home in Killarney with his family, said that he still has bad days but is overwhelmed with the massive support he has received since his accident, on August 16, 2017. “It’s hard to find words to express how grateful and thankful I am for everyone’s support and fundraising,” Ian, who is back to school as a fifth year in St Brendan’s College, told the Killarney Advertiser. “It’s honestly mind blowing to see the generosity from people when something crazy and unexpected like this happens to somebody. I couldn’t be so positive without the support and kind messages I receive on a day to day basis.” This week, a fundraising committee, formed in Spa in September 2017 to assist the teen, also thanked the people and numerous organisations for their generosity. “The overall success of this venture has been extraordinary. Our committee are overwhelmed by the response,” committee Chairman James Gleeson, of Spa GAA club, said. “With his positivity of outlook and his keen intellect, we feel there are very few limits to what Ian can

achieve in the academic world.” The fundraising started in October 2017 with a special Lotto for Ian, in the Torc Hotel, Killarney, and it proved to be a major success. Subsequently, there were many other fundraising events, as well as inclusion as a nominated charity in the 2018 Ring of Kerry Cycle. There was the marvellous contribution of the management and staff of Killarney Park Hotel and of Denis Geaney, who organised
Team Geaney for the cycle. The All-Ireland GAA Golf Challenge, in Nuremore, Co Monaghan, had Ian as the beneficiary, from which he got a car specially adapted to his needs. Waterford man Liam Daniels and MEP Sean Kelly played key roles in this. “It is a testament to the inspiration provided by Ian himself and his parents, Nora and Mick, and their extended families; to the wonderful generosity of so many groups and clubs (GAA and others), community enterprises, societies, charitable organisations, schools and, of course, the many individuals who contributed so generously,’’ said the Spa Fundraising Committee in a statement. “At the moment, more than €375,000 has been raised in this phase of fundraising. As all our expenses have been covered by generous sponsorship, all money raised has been lodged in a Trust Fund for Ian. “This fund is administered by three trustees, namely Deirdre O’Sullivan Darcy, Ivor Flynn and Tadhg Hickey. We are indeed fortunate to have people of their calibre willing to carry out this function. “Our committee will take a break from active fundraising for now, but we will monitor Ian’s progress in the future and be available to assist in any way. The Trust Fund account is of course still open and the trustees will be available to assist with any queries. Finally, can we again express our deep gratitude to everyone who helped make this campaign the success it was.’’

TOWNTALK €100k for rhododendron eradication like “spitting into the ocean”- Healy-Rae BY ADAM MOYNIHAN €100k of government funding aimed at eradicating the invasive and highly destructive rhododendron plant in Killarney National Park is like “spitting into the ocean” - Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae has claimed. His comments come after the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht announced the funding earlier this week. Recently volunteers from the locality as well as from Men’s Shed groups from across the country came to Killarney to help clear some of the plant away. The men, who had been invited by Haven Pharmacy, the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, which organised all accommodation, completely free of charge, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the trustees of Muckross House, cleared significant acreage of the invasive weed. And while Mr Healy-Rae was full of praise for their efforts, he said more help was needed. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, Mr Healy-Rae added that the issue is “way more serious” than people grasp and that the park is “dying before our eyes”. “The future viability of the National Park is at stake here,” he said. “We take the park for granted. We think that it will always be there the way that it is, but it won’t. The National Park is actually dying before our eyes because of lack of maintenance.” Mr Healy-Rae claims the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, who said it was issuing a oneyear contract for the management and implementation of a plan that would solve the issues caused by the aggressive weed, is not enough. “The funding announced recently, the €100,000 contract, is like spitting into the ocean,” he said. “I have taken an awful lot of advice on the National Park from extremely experienced people who know the park inside out, and it will take planning, funding and continuous maintenance. Not a once-off contract that will last for two years. Not a campaign that will last for a

number of weeks. Year-round maintenance is needed. “Whether it will be done through schemes working on a continuous basis, or a new proper plan by government that will say yes this is a national treasure – because that’s what it is. “We say the National Park is there. It isn’t going to disappear - but it is dying under our eyes.” The Kerry politician has drawn ire over his comments on the issue in the past - but insists that it’s a very grave problem that needs to be taken seriously. “When I stood up in the Dáil and said that the army should be called in to help solve this problem it did
get people talking, but it has gone off the boil again now. People were inclined to say that it’s a bit of craic - but it’s not. This is awful serious. “I want the National Park to be there in 50, in 150, in 350 years. I want it to be a place of glory and a place that our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be able to enjoy. We have to demand better.” He added that he’s grateful to the Men’s Sheds and people from around the country who have volunteered over the years. “It is quite simply not enough,” he said. “We desperately need an aggressive campaign.”
Meeting focuses on creating safer communities BY MICHELLE CREAN
Killarney Superintendent Flor Murphy said that the key to safer communities comes from a strong partnership between Gardai and the communities across South Kerry. Mr Murphy made his comments at the Killarney District Community Alert Meeting held at the Torc Hotel in Killarney, on Wednesday evening, which was attended by community alert representatives from throughout the Killarney District. The meeting, which was organised by Detective Garda Finbar Donovan and Garda Diane Collins, Killarney Garda Station, was well attended with a number of guest speakers present. Sergeant Jim Foley Crime Prevention Officer Kerry highlighted the impor-
tance of crime awareness in our communities, particularly in relation to elderly people. Diarmuid Cronin of Muintir na Tíre outlined the updates in relation to text alert and other measures in place in relation to vulnerable communities. Garda Fidelma O’Leary of the Kerry Victims Crime Office spoke on the various supports in place for victims of crime which is a very welcome development. “Partnership between An Garda Síochána and our communities is the key to making our communities better and safer, and there are excellent partnerships in Killarney and throughout South Kerry,” Superintendent Flor Murphy said.

A boy from Lower New Street
The places Weeshie called home
Weeshie in his own words FOREWORD BY DAMIEN SWITZER
When the world thinks of Kerry, The Rose of Tralee, Kerrygold, Dingle, The Ring of Kerry, Killarney’s beautiful lakes and football all come to mind. They are things that define us as a county. Sure, we have many famous people too from Tom Crean to John B Keane and Peig Sayers to Daniel O’Connell, but now we have another name to add to that illustrious list. Some names live for a generation and fade away with the sands of time. However, some stars just burn brighter than the others and endure forever. He was more than a legendary Kerry commentator, a footballer and referee. He was respected the length and breadth of the country for his encyclopaedic knowledge and infectious enthusiasm for the game he loved so much. Nothing matched it, bar his love for family and his beloved Killarney. I admired him for nothing more than being Weeshie. He encouraged and fed my thirst for Killarney, its history and its people. Sometimes my wife would say, “you’re going into full Weeshie mode again,” when I’d start talking about Killarney in an unapologetically thick Killarney accent. A few years back I did a piece with him. I asked Weeshie to stay away from the sport and keep it about himself and Killarney. It’s particularly apt with Christmas just around the corner. The following are his words. Outside the house where he was born in St Patrick’s Place, Mallow
Weeshie with his siblings, Jimmy, Sheila, Dermie, Genie, and his mother.
Christmas Eve was always a memorable time for me as a young altar boy. Midnight Mass in the Cathedral was special, serving Bishop Moynihan, the church packed, walking up the aisle from the back of the church to begin the ceremonies, the wonderful smell of incense, the alter lit up by hundreds of candles, the choir in full voice singing all the beautiful Christmas carols and Tom Donoghue as always playing the organ. Giving out communion to hundreds was a trying time as you would have to hold the palate under the chins of all as we were warned that a little particle of the host might fall. The hand would literally go numb from the weight of it. This I remember distinctly for some reason. Joe Smith the butcher and his lovely little wife Maggie lived just four doors up from our New Street home. They had a tiny little shop. Joe would walk the sheep and cattle in through the shop and out through the kitchen to slaughter them in the back yard. He would collect all the fat from his kills, turn it into tallow and every Christmas would produce the biggest candle in town. On a few occasions I was asked to hold the seven-foot casing as Joe pulled the magnificent gleaming white candle from its holding. Further up the street was Callie McCarthy’s toyshop and it was like an Aladdin’s cave of toys. Here Santa toys were left and would be collected just before the big event. The shop sold caps which let off loud bangs when the trigger was pulled on the cowboy guns. This was the first ever present I remember getting from Santa, a cowboy hat, a gun (a six-shooter) and a holster. Lower New Street and our playground down the Demesne would echo to the sound of gunfire for a week after Christmas.
I have been living in the beautiful town of Killarney for seventy odd years of my life. The other three months were spent in the town of Mallow in County Cork where I was born. St Patrick’s Place is right in the centre of Mallow and when my dad, a garda, was transferred to Killarney in May 1941, I was just three months old. So I really consider myself a nearly-born and bred Killarney townie. 40 Lower New Street, now Chapter 40 restaurant, was our home from 1941 to 1959 when we moved to St Anne’s House next to St Mary’s Parish Hall. The old building was demolished some years ago and a lovely new building now stands in its place. Growing up on the side of Lower New Street was an amazing experience; all manner of life existed there in my younger days. It was unlike today, a real hub of activity. Just across the street from our home were the ESB offices with people coming and going, paying their bills all day. The garda barracks was also just across the road - always action there - and just down the street on the left was Mrs Devane’s offices where huge queues of people were to be seen lining up to collect their dole money winter and summer. Next to that was the Killarney Presbytery where the priests lived and there was about 10 or 12 always coming and going. And the funerals from the Cathedral just around the corner passing our home, it was all bicycles and horse and traps back then. Cades Mineral Water Factory, where I worked summers, stood where Dunnes Stores is now and across from the post office John Tarrant ran his lovely bakery and confectionery shop. I worked summers and Christmas there also, up in the morning at 6am to begin the baking of the bread with John Gee.
Lower New Street where Weeshie lived and played in the 1940s and 1950s.

“I really consider myself a nearly-born and bred Killarney townie”
In the old Polo Grounds with two legendary Killarney Legion men, Denny Lyne and Teddy O’Sullivan. Both men had played here in the 1947 All-Ireland v Cavan. Denny was the Kerry captain.
Weeshie and his grandchildren, Eva and Lucy, with his three PPI National Radio Awards. St Finan’s Hospital where Weeshie worked as a psychiatric nurse for 38 years.
The Presentation Convent, just as it is today, was always a hive of activity. The Bow House was just above our home and Dr Ivo and Dr Billy O’Sullivan had their practices across and below Christy Healy’s shop. The gasworks were just up the concrete lane, always a strong pungent smell hanging in the air from there as it belched out smoke from its towering chimneys. The old saw mills and the Killarney Technical School were just above the Post Office and the Johnson family was the first to deliver pasteurised milk to the street. These lovely people lived next door to Christy Healy’s. Christmas was always a wonderfully happy time in our home in New Street. My mother would hang the big, long, colourful decorations from one corner of the kitchen/sitting room to the far corner, the Christmas candle was always put on the front window and the youngest in the family, Genie, was given the honour of lighting it on Christmas Eve. The big event was the arrival of the postman. My mother loved sitting down in front of the fire with a cigarette and ritually open the bundles of Christmas cards which always arrived. Indeed, in the weeks leading up the big day she would spend hours writing cards, addressing them and sending us to the post office to post to friends at home and abroad. Every year my mother would make it her business as a Cork/ Kanturk born woman to buy the Christmas edition of the Holly Bough, from Bunny Courtney’s paper shop. The paper was a Cork tradition since 1897 and it was a celebration of the magic of Christmas and the magic of Cork over the years. She loved this paper and spent hours browsing through it. But the much awaited, highly expected event was the arrival by post of a big fat goose from my father’s people, farmers in Tipperary, where he was born. This would come wrapped in a canvas bag, stitched tightly at the ends. No one could open it but my father and this was a ritual in itself, cutting away the stitching, making sure not to damage the bird in any way and then the magic of extracting pounds of salty homemade butter from inside the belly of the goose. And always a long letter in his father’s scrawling handwriting. This would be read to all the family at the table. That goose always got a quick death when mam landed it in the middle of the table for the Christmas dinner, which usual began around 4pm. However, there are memories of sad Christmases also when Sheila, Kathleen Ann and Jimmy, who all emigrated in the ‘hungry fifties’, might not be able to come home for the
festive season. And then when they did there was great sadness when they left New Street for the Killarney Railway Station with their big brown suit cases on their journey back to Manchester. I would travel over to Jimmy for holidays and to see Man United in Old Trafford. This is where my love for the Busby Babes began. A dark pall of sadness hung over the home for a few weeks when they left. These thoughts of emigration remain firmly etched in my Christmas memories. I can still see clearly in my mind’s eye all those great neighbours of Lower New Street. Many, sadly, are now gone to their eternal reward. The Johnstons, Patsy Cahill and family, Johnny O’Leary, the builder Charlie O’Brien’s family, the Culligans lived down the Green Lawn, Paddy later became Garda Commissioner and played basketball for Ireland and all the boys were great Legion men and basketball players. Michael Clifford lived where Dunnes Stores is now. He died in a building accident in England. His daughter Michele is the Chief World News Correspondent for Sky TV. Just across the street from our home, Jer, Dodo and Maureen O’Sullivan lived, great people. And Jimmy Doyle - his dad was affectionately known as The Colleen Bawn - and his mother - a cousin to the great Mick Galway. Christy Sheehan and family and the McLennan’s lived down the Green Lawn and, of course, the McNeills just a few doors down from us had a little shop/pub. Their father was a rep for Bush Radio. We had our own football team and a few subs. Stephen’s Day would see a full-blooded game on in the seminary field as one side of the street took on the other, no quarter asked or given. I remember Nell Brosnan, who lived as a recluse on her own three doors down. Years later I learned that this lady had been a nurse on the front in the World War and had seen some terrible sights. And, of course, the Healys of the famous corner shop, our meeting point. A great family a story in itself for me here, perhaps, at a later date. Alas we never got the chance. Maybe we will all meet below the bridge some day and continue our chat. Our sincere condolences to his family. So there you have it folks, as Weeshie would say. His memories of friends and places, his love for his family and Killarney. It is hard to say goodbye but his voice will endure, his memory will not fade. Killarney will not forget, because there is a little Weeshie in all of us.
“Memories are precious, priceless and part and parcel of human nature. Lower New Street shaped my life and left me with amazing youthful Christmas memories, far too many to recall here. Killarney: the greatest place in the whole world. For me, it is definitely Heaven’s Reflex.” Weeshie Fogart

27 people who took on an epic endurance challenge like no other – handed over almost €43,000 to three local charities on Saturday night. The group, part of the 54321 Challenge, cycled The Ring of Kerry, climbed Carrauntoohil, cycled from Killarney to Dingle and climbed Mount Brandon, and finally cycled back to Killarney, from September 6 to 9. On Saturday night representatives from the group’s chosen charities, Skellig Stars, Grow and Sera Husky Animal Rescue, were delighted to receive funds, a total of €42,456, in JM Reidy’s Bar, Killarney. This brings the amount raised, in the six years since the charity challenge began, to €135,156 for various Kerry charities. “27 people started the challenge under the shadow of darkness in Killarney on Thursday, September 6, and cycled around the Ring of Kerry on the first day,” one of the organisers of the challenge, TJ O’Connor, said. “This would exhaust most people but they were up early again on Friday 7 and travelled to the base of Carrauntoohil and climbed Ireland’s highest mountain. On Saturday, they once again took to the bicycles and cycled from Killarney to the foot of Mount Brandon and climbed it. The persistent rain and wind did not dampen the spirits of this amazing bunch of people. The challengers spent a welcome night in Dingle before embarking on the final day which was a cycle from Dingle to finish where it all started in Killarney. They received a hero’s welcome at the Gleneagle Hotel where supporters of all three charities gathered to welcome them home. It was a weekend of bonding, banter, singing, struggles, laughs - but most of all a great sense of achievement in completing the challenge on a personal level and for three great causes. “On behalf of the Skellig Stars, Grow and Sera Husky Animal Rescue and the 54321 Challenge team, we
A fun Bingo night with the Gobnaits
They’re back…and hoping for a ‘full house’! Christmas in Killarney’s best loved Gobnaits are back again this year with more fun and madness for their annual Christmas Bingo night. The famous four arrived in town on Monday morning, courtesy of Pat Moynihan’s ‘Bingo Bus’ with the help of Fr Andrew Joy, to launch their own style charity ’Christmas Bingo with the Gobnaits’. The unique fun event will take place on Wednesday, December 12, at the Laurels Hall, Main Street, Killarney. And Pat Moynihan’s ‘Bingo Bus’ will be on hand to collect participants from Beech Road car park, at 8.30pm on the night. Bingo will begin at 9pm sharp and a book of cards is €10. Dressing as a Gobnait, or one of Gobnait’s husbands, is optional! Host for the evening is none other than Fr Andrew Joy. “It promises to be a night of fun and hilarity, with a trip down Killarney’s memory lane,” Andrew Joy said. “We’re hoping for a full house on the night. I’m also encouraging as many people to avail of Pat Moynihan’s ‘Bingo Bus’ which departs Beech Road car park at 8.30pm, and after a quick tour of the town, will drop Bingo passengers to The Laurels in Main Street! Expect more of the same antics as last year’s fun table quiz, and if you’re easily offended by good ‘clane’ (sic) fun, stay at home.” As part of the fun on the night participants will be tasked

Fun spot prizes, including the traditional tin of USA Assorted Biscuits, Blue Nun, and sunlight soap are all up for
grabs, and of course a few excellent vouchers for dinner and shopping for some lucky competitors. “Our Gobnaits include, Kate O’Leary, Emer Corridon, Julie McGowan and Annmarie O’Shea-Kennelly. “Video clips and news updates will be posted on the Christmas in Killarney Facebook page - you have been warned!”

Garda Arrests
Following three arrests on November 15 in Killarney as part of a Criminal Assets Bureau/Kerry Division Money Laundering Operation a further two related arrests were made in Clondalkin on Monday morning. The two males are understood to be from the Killarney area. Both were detained in Clondalkin Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and later released without charge.
Defence Forces Mass A Mass for deceased members of the Defence Forces and the Kerry United Nations Veterans Association Post 32, will take place in St John’s Church Tralee, this Sunday, at 9am. It’s the first annual Mass and all are welcome to attend.
Mastergeehy/An Dromid Postal Service
Councillor Michael Cahill has called on the Government and An Post to secure a Post Office service for the Mastergeehy/Dromid area. Councillor Cahill said this vast area, where the houses are widely dispersed, warrants a Post Office. The Fianna Fail Councillor said there is a large elderly population in the region and the closure of the service would be a major blow. The Rossbeigh Councillor said the local community also have a role to play and must make more use of the service. “Every transaction helps, if Saving Accounts were opened for all the children of the parish, even if it was just a couple of euros per transaction per month, this would be of enormous help,” said Councillor Cahill. The Fianna Fail Councillor said the reality of Post Offices in rural Ireland today is “use them or lose them”.
Funding Welcomed Cllr Niall Kelleher has welcomed news that €8000 has been awarded to Rathmore Graveyard Committee for the provision of disabled parking spaces around the church and community facilities. Tureencahill Community Group has been awarded €1,200 for Installation of external lighting at the front, side and rear of the community building.
In May 2000, a very impressive consultant’s report by planning consultants from Dublin and engineers from Cork was produced. It was called the ‘Killarney Land Use and Transportation Study’. It had been commissioned by Killarney UDC and Kerry County Council jointly in advance of the millennium. The brief was to assess the needs of Killarney and its environs to the year 2021. Transportation and parking were to be major features, as were amenities to enhance the life of tourists and locals. The study was commissioned in 1999 when the population, within what was a smaller town boundary, was just 12,000, around 3,000 less than what we have right now, give or take a few hundred. Growth was picking up, and the Celtic Tiger had not yet powered ahead. And tourists were less than half what we see now. But even then, a full 20 years ago, parking and traffic problems were identified as a key issue, as were lack of all-weather indoor facilities. It was a good, well thought out production in that it gave special recognition to the 1990 plan by the Killarney National Park and particularly for Killarney House, then still in the hands of the McShain family. The garden plan for Killarney House was very different to what has been developed. It included, for instance, a formal rose garden and a camellia walk. There was to be a cafe and a craft exhibit area. But even more significantly, there was to be a jaunting car entrance and a car park both just at the top of Ross Road. “There is a strong perception land prices in Killarney are excessive”, that millennial year plan found, and this was partly due to zoning. At the time there were 250 acres of zoned undeveloped lands within the town boundaries. But it also spoke of how lands in Fossa which had been identified in 1992 in a previous plan for housing had been acquired for a golf course. Elsewhere, I am reminded by the following statement of something I wrote in these columns just last week of the need for a Killarney museum. “Killarney has no publicly-owned weather independent leisure facilities, municipal theatre or a museum and the need for such facilities has been a recurring demand”. Tourism was still the largest employer, but it was closely followed by professional and by manufacturing. The town got 450,000 visitors from overseas, the majority were Yanks, followed by Europeans, and Britons. There was need for more retail. The key traffic problems remain still, it seems! “Driver confusion, inefficient junction operation” was the description of the High Street junction operation! And congestion was a problem in New Road, while College Street was “choked”. Parking out of season met demand, but “demand often exceeds capacity during the seasonal peak”. Plus ça change - except there are problems now all year round and I met two people last Saturday who simply gave up trying to get parking space so they could have lunch in Killarney town centre. A multi-storey car park, possibly at Jimmy the Masters, was identified. But coach parking was a problem both as an eyesore and in terms of capacity. A new Town Hall was proposed for one of the six council-owned sites, including the Beech Road car park. It was also proposed that it should be a landmark site hosting tax offices, revenue offices, South Kerry Partnership and other EU-financed programmes. The Jimmy the Masters site, where the Department of Arts and Tourism now is, was considered - but the New Street car park would be best. The Glebe was a key site at the heart of the town. Basement parking and it would have been a key site for a theatre… and museum!
Most of the projects outlined are still on the “to do list” Back then a lack of provision for cyclists in terms of safe and convenient routes and parking provision was a key finding. Junctions such as Fairhill and the East Avenue Road were felt to be “not cycle-friendly”. There were no cycleways despite the clear demand by visitors and locals for cycling. “There is a current lack of provision for cyclists in Killarney in terms of safe and convenient routes and parking provision. This undermines the substantial potential for increasing cycling’s mode share resulting from Killarney’s compact size and relatively flat topography within the town centre”. Better pathways for pedestrians and links were also needed. Lack of public transport was a major impediment. The cycle and jarvey path between Ross Road and the Flesk River amenity walk was identified, as was the Southern link relief road from Muckross to the N22. To be fair, the public sports complex has been achieved, but 20 years on it is about the only project I can find fulfilled. Yes, there is part-pedestrianisation and, to be fair, the courthouse site at Fairhill looks well. Killarney House is open, thanks to the NPWS, though I think I would have preferred the original garden plan along with the jarvey entrance and cafe. The new civic offices, the town park, the theatre and arts project, the high technology business park, the cycleways and walking routes, the River Flesk Amenity Walk, the multi-storey car park, the southern link road... Where are these? Now there have been at least six plans for Killarney since this one and they keep repeating, in one form or another, though not nearly so well, all the goals set out in the millennium. There have been several national and local elections. We have had several town and county managers. We have had numerous elections, local and national. Governments have fallen. The world’s expectations have moved on. We now live in an internet, click-button, online age where we expect instant results. We have also gone corporate in our local government with new fancy titles and new corporate-age speak and jargon, and thanks to Bertie Ahern and the madness of the Tiger, huge, huge salaries. Pensions and retirement sums and pay for councillors (back then there was no pay for members and executive salaries were modest) have been introduced. Even the town plans are part of this sort of corporate speak. But one thing is certain, while the public sector and democratic sectors have adopted the robes of the private sector, it is “all fur coat and no underwear”, to use an old phrase. No private business in the world would have survived having failed to achieve so many objectives and targets in so long a timeframe! And if you ever want to see the difference between the private and the public sector in this country, and sadly the ineffectiveness of politics, and State governance, get a copy of the 2000 master plan for Killarney and its environs, then do a Google search and you will be astonished to find that most of the projects outlined are still on the “to do list”. And they wonder why no one wants to enter politics anymore. Isn’t it high time we demanded greater efficiencies in our public and political sectors? Do they call it value for money? Perhaps looking back at old plans is a start in the accountability.

Awards
Three Kerry community groups honoured at Pride of Place Awards Three hard-working community groups from Kerry have been honoured at the prestigious Irish Public Bodies Pride of Place Awards, which took place in Cork last Saturday evening. Blackwater Women’s Group and Maharees Coastal Area received a Special Award for their work, while Killorglin’s K-Fest was runner-up up in the Creative Place Initiative category. The judges said the Blackwater Women’s Group was a “vibrant community group making a real difference in peoples’ lives as they have succeeded in combatting loneliness through the extraordinary actions of a number of dedicated people”. The judges were equally impressed with the Maharees entry, stating that the Maharees is “notable not just as an area of great natural beauty but distinguished by a dedicated local group working to ensure a sustainable approach to conservation that is exemplary and a model for others to follow”. K-Fest is a popular arts festival which takes place in Killorglin every June. Members of the groups joined with 800 community heroes from across the country at the awards ceremony, which is operated in association with peace-building charity Co-operation Ireland. The awards were attended by Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Norma Foley, and the Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell. Cllr Foley said the three award-winning groups had done Kerry proud and epitomised the very best of community initiatives which are happening across the county.

Kilcummin Gourmet Kitchen celebrates first birthday A local food company who have seen their business thrive in recent months are looking forward to celebrating a year in business this weekend. Kilcummin Gourmet Kitchen, which is run by award winning chef Paul O’Connor and his wife Colleen, cater for any size function. The couple have developed unique recipes and a personalised service right to your door for any event including birthday parties, communions, confirmations, christenings, hen and stag parties, wedding after parties, the morning of the wedding breakfast, BBQs as well as bespoke catering for dinner parties that will wow your friends! Paul worked as head chef in the four star Lake Hotel in Killarney and during his time there the hotel was awarded its first ever AA Rosette. Also, as head chef at the Herbert Restaurant in Cahernane, the four star restaurant was awarded two AA Rosettes. He also featured in the ‘Chefs of Distinction Recipe Book’, which features some of Ireland’s top chefs and dishes from some of the UK and Ireland’s finest hotels. However, after a serious accident in April last year, Paul with the support of his wife, decided to set up his own business which he had been thinking about for a while. And it’s been the best decision the couple made, Colleen explained. “Life changed after the accident,” Colleen said. “He
had been working long days and fell asleep behind the wheel on his way home. After giving up his job he freelanced for a while and then had the idea for the business. We were up and running within eight weeks, attending farmers markets in Killarney, Limerick and Cork. We’re now focusing on outside catering and this side of the business is thriving.” Kilcummin Gourmet Kitchen specialise in outside catering for a range of different functions and can call right to your door. Paul can come and cook starters, mains and desserts for intimate dinner parties. Colleen explained that you don’t even have to wash a fork. “We can come to your door, set up in 15 minutes and

Ryan McMullan to perform at INEC Singing sensation Ryan McMullan is set to perform at Killarney’s INEC this December and the Belfast native is sure to attract a large crowd. Ryan’s debut single ‘Bowie On The Radio’ was just released in September but he has been destined for the big stage for quite some time. From playing in stadiums supporting Ed Sheeran and selling out headline tours throughout the UK and Europe, Ryan’s rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. He has just returned from supporting fellow Irish act Kodaline on their European tour and is currently playing support to The Coronas in Australia. When he returns to Ireland, Ryan will embark on an end-of-year homecoming Irish tour including dates in Derry, Galway, Dundalk, Dublin, Limerick, Cork and the INEC, culminating in Belfast’s prestigious Ulster Hall which has just sold out. Having been blessed with a voice that can shift effortlessly between the angelic and the guttural he has honed a song writing craft that exploits the incredible versatility and power of his God-given instrument. Since Ryan’s early days, there has been significant heat from industry heavyweights. The anticipation for his debut album is building and now with the release of ‘Bowie On The Radio’ the public finally gets a glimpse of what Ryan McMullan is all about. Maura is IHF Kerry Employee of the Year
Niall Coffey (Aghadoe Heights General Manager) congratulates Maura Casey on being named IHF Kerry Branch Employee of the Year.
Aghadoe Heights Hotel Lounge Supervisor Maura Casey was the toast of the town on Tuesday as she was named the Irish Hotels Federation Kerry Branch Employee of the Year. Maura, who has welcomed guests to the stylish Heights Lounge and Piano Bar for over 14 years, was honoured at an awards lunch this week and General Manager Niall Coffey said it was no more than she deserved. “We are over the moon for Maura and so proud that her skills have been recognised at such a high level,” he said. “She is an absolute asset to the business and we
feel honoured to have her as part of the Aghadoe team.” Maura’s infectious smile and warm hospitality have made her a firm favourite amongst visitors and locals alike, but she was typically humble as she accepted the award from IHF Kerry Branch Chairperson, Niamh O’Shea. “I just love what I do,” Maura said. “I wasn’t trying to win anything, but of course it’s a fabulous honour and I’m delighted. I love making people feel happy. Life can be hard and everybody needs a little pick me up, and that’s what our team does best. We make people feel special.”

Pupils and staff St Oliver’s Primary School in Killarney showed racism the red card on Friday as they took part in the ‘Wear Red Day’ national campaign. Part of the charity work by Show Racism the Red Card, St Oliver’s joined other schools, businesses and organisations from throughout Ireland to promote anti-racism awareness and raise funds. The aim is to promote anti-racism awareness and to raise funds for the work of the charity, school principal Rory Darcy explained. “Ireland is a multicultural society, we need to encourage children and adults to grow their understanding of the many new communities now represented,” Rory said. “Unfortunately racism is a reality, but we have shown that we are making a stand and say there is no place for racism.” According to Garrett Mullan of Show Racism the Red Card, ‘Wear Red Day’ is a great opportunity to bring people together, make a stand against discrimination and promote respect for diversity in society. “The events that are taking place during ‘Wear Red Day’ serve not only to promote the anti-racism message, but also to promote integration and inclusion of all,” he said. Over the last 10 years, Show Racism the Red Card has engaged young people with the anti-racism message, he added. “It has an impact with hundreds of schools, clubs and youth services each year through its different programmes. The charity delivers workshops, training and also works to promote participation in sport. “We look forward to the ongoing support of the community to mark ‘Wear Red Day’. Show Racism the Red Card would like to congratulate St Oliver’s for becoming involved in Wear Red Day 2018.”

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor, Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues
DASH CAMS AND DATA PROTECTION In recent weeks, some Irish Insurance Companies have confirmed that they will offer 10% premium and Motor Insurance Policies for drivers who have fitted dashcams on their vehicle. This is seen by Insurance Companies as a means of promoting road safety and potentially dealing with suspected fraud and insurance claims. These proposals however may have the potential to have implications under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Under such Regulations, use of cameras are required to be justified to fall within Data Protection Rules. Where the storage of such data may be long term, additional problems and difficulties arise. In the event that footage is to be stored for a long period of time or permanently stored, such that it may be used in legal proceedings, be they civil or criminal, then issues arise under the Regulations. Further issues arise whereby a person’s personal details are being stored ranging from registration plates of vehicles to identifying work places or places of residence. There are no clear guidelines as of yet in respect of these dash-cams and Data Protection Regulations. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. KWD’s Forge Hill Recycling Plant is best in class KWD’s state of the art recycling plant in Forge Hill been named as Ireland’s top Waste Recycling and Recovery Facility. The facility, which can now serve the recycling needs of 400,000 homes in the country’s Southern Region, was awarded the accolade recently, at the fourth annual Packman Awards run by Repak. KWD managing director Sean Murphy said the award is a tribute to the work ethos of the company’s 110 staff and the Forge Hill team in particular. “KWD has adopted a sustainable approach to waste management in the South West of Ireland since its foundation in 1986, investing consistently in state of the art facilities, such as Forge Hill, deploying the latest technology to eliminate detrimental impacts on the environment, and the Pakman award recognises this,” Mr Murphy said. The national Packman Awards launched by Repak recognise excellence in waste management and recycling among businesses, organisations and community groups in Ireland. Mr Murphy said the Packman awards consolidates the KWD group as a leader in sustainable recycling and follows company initiatives such as the Environmental Education and Awareness Initiative engaging 4,000 school goers, and the now annual County Clean Up which began in 2012, with 5,000 volunteers collecting 8,000 bags of rubbish this year. The Kerry based company plans to increase the number of households it serves through its Forge Hill facility in the coming years. The extra capacity will be needed as local authorities throughout the country introduce new bye-laws from January next, with the

Pictured at the Pakman Awards 2018 were Minister for State at the Department of Communications, Climate Action and the Environment, Sean Canney TD; Sean Murphy; Lynn Morrissey; Brian Bruton from Forge Hill Recycling Ltd, Anthony Mulleady, Chairperson of the Irish Waste Management Association. powers to call to homes and businesses to demand receipts for rubbish disposal under robust new waste management regimes to be launched in Cork and Kerry. The hard-hitting bye-laws will ensure all citizens
dispose of their waste by using an authorised waste contractor, by taking it to an approved waste facility, or by a bin-sharing agreement. Offenders could also face fines of up to €2,500 for putting recyclables into their rubbish bins or for not storing bins properly.

Guatemalen ex-soldier sentenced to 5,000 years in prison
Bamboo housing could solve Manila’s slum crisis
A Guatemalan former soldier has been sentenced to more than 5,000 years in prison for his role in one of the most violent episodes in Guatemala’s brutal 36-year civil war. More than 200 people were killed in a massacre in the village of Dos Erres in 1982. Santos López (66) was found responsible for 171 of the deaths. López was a member of the Kaibiles, a
US-trained counter-insurgency force fighting left-wing guerrillas. He was sentenced to 30 years for each of the 171 killings committed in the village and to an additional 30 years for his role in the murder of a girl who had originally survived. Under Guatemalan law, however, the maximum time any person can spend in jail is 50 years.
Trump Corner Trump warns of “bedlam, chaos, injury & death” if judges block immigration policy President Donald Trump has clashed with Chief Supreme Court Justice John Roberts and the US Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit after it blocked his move to restrict access to political asylum in the US for illegal immigrants. Justice Roberts, the top-ranked member of the Supreme Court had earlier defended the independence of the judicial branch of government. “Justice Roberts can say what he wants,” Trump tweeted, “but the 9th Circuit is a complete & total disaster.” San Francisco’s 9th Circuit court is considered to be one of the US’s most liberal and it has blocked Trump’s moves on immigration before, such as his travel ban. “It is out of control, has a horrible reputation, is overturned more than any Circuit in the Country, 79%, & is used to get an almost guaranteed result,” Trump continued. A PolitiFact investigation that was carried out last year found that when the Supreme Court reviewed cases from the 9th Circuit court,
it did indeed overturn 79%, but the total number of cases ruled by the court that get overturned stands lower than 1%. Contrary to President Trump’s claims, the 9th Circuit court doesn’t have the highest rate of cases overturned by the Supreme court; the 6th Circuit court holds that particular distinction. “Judges must not Legislate Security and Safety at the Border, or anywhere else. They know nothing about it and are making our Country unsafe,” Trump said. The US constitution tasks members of the federal judiciary with determining whether or not actions from Congress or the executive branch comply with the constitution. “Our great Law Enforcement professionals MUST BE ALLOWED TO DO THEIR JOB! If not there will be only bedlam, chaos, injury and death. We want the Constitution as written!” Trump continued. However, the judges in the 9th Circuit are also fulfilling their constitutional duty, according to Roberts and other legal experts, and part of their job is determining what jobs law enforcement professionals can do.

A creative young designer from the Philippines has scooped a €56,000 prize for creating a lowcost bamboo housing unit aimed at tackling the country’s slum crisis. 23-year-old Earl Patrick Forlales’ design takes just four hours to construct, and at just €56/sq metre, the houses are very affordable. Mr Forlales, who comes from Manila and studied material science engineering, will use the prize money from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Cities for our Future competition to start work on his “CUBO” housing units next year. Manila has a population of 12 million people, four million of whom live in impoverished slums. Some 2.5 million more workers are expected to arrive over the next three years, placing the fast-growing city under housing strain. Mr Forlales’ modular CUBO homes will be used to house the newcomers, before being extended to the
slums at large. The project is designed to help the influx of workers moving to Manila’s slums The young designer was inspired by his grandparent’s rural bamboo house, though his bamboo will be treated and laminated for a 10-times-longer lifecycle. The material is an eco-friendly choice, as it releases 35% more oxygen than trees and can be harvested annually without causing soil degradation. The CUBO homes also have slanted roofs to catch rainwater, and stilts to keep out floodwater. Mr Forlales has picked out a plot of land in Manila for the project’s first homes, and hopes his design can help other crowded cities too. In theory, it’s viable anywhere that bamboo grows, which includes South-East Asia, and parts of Africa and Latin America. He plans to raise funds for the project by selling waste plastic to factories.
Engineers straighten Leaning Tower of Pisa (by 1.5 inches) The Leaning Tower of Pisa is looking a little straighter than it used to. Engineers have been straightening the iconic Tuscan bell tower for the past 20 years and have just announced a further four centimetres (1.57 inches) have been shaved off the lean. They previously reduced it by 17 inches after closing down the building for a decade in the 1990s. Engineers did this by using hundreds of tons of lead counterweights at the base and extracting soil from under the foundations. The 12th-century tower reopened to the public in 2001. The lean has become the tower’s trademark after initially emerging in 1178, five years after it was constructed.

Fianna Fáil & Sinn Féin choose candidates
Fianna Fáil politicians John Brassil TD, Fionnán Fitzgerald, Cllr Norma Foley Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Thomas McEllistrim and Senator Ned O’Sullivan.
Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin have selected their candidates for the next local elections in Tralee and Castleisland. Mayor of Kerry Councillor Norma Foley has been selected to run in Tralee for Fianna Fáil while sitting Councillor Thomas McEllistrim will run once again in Castleisland. Newcomer Fionnán Fitzgerald, who is a teacher in CBS The Green, Tralee, will also contest the Castleisland area. Sinn Féin members met in the River Island Hotel on Saturday evening to select candidates and nominations for sitting councillors Pa Daly and Toireasa Ferris were the only ones received for Tralee. “If elected, we will continue to prior-
itise the Tralee to Fenit Greenway,” Cllr Daly said. “We will continue to give a voice to those who cannot find affordable housing, we will continue to make the hard decisions for the benefit of all whether those decisions are popular or not.” Meanwhile, in Castleisland, The Bonn Doherty cumann nominated their fellow member Kate McSweeney to contest next May’s elections for their area. Her name was the only one to be put forward to the convention. “Castleisland and its hinterland have always played second fiddle to the larger towns of Tralee and Killarney,” Kate McSweeney said. “This is a great opportunity to put the best of what our area has to offer to the fore.”

Big Mick favourite to get Ireland job Mick McCarthy has emerged as the frontrunner to be named as the new manager of the Irish soccer team. The 59-year-old reportedly landed in Dublin yesterday evening to thrash out a contract that would see him take over from the outgoing Martin O’Neill, who left the post on Wednesday. McCarthy previously managed the Irish team over a successful six-year spell during which the Boys in Green qualified for the 2002 World Cup. His tenure was overshadowed somewhat by his infamous spat with Roy Keane that led to the team captain leaving the squad on the eve of that World Cup, but McCarthy still led the side to the last 16. He resigned after a poor start to the Euro 2004 qualifying campaign. McCarthy, who was born in Barnsley but played 57 times for Ireland, subsequently managed Sunderland, Wolves and Ipswich. He left The Tractor Boys in April of this year. Former Ireland left-back Ian Harte took to Twitter to give McCarthy his backing. “Who is the best person to become man-
ager of Ireland? If it was me I would have Mick McCarthy all day long!” he tweeted. “Mick is proven at international level. Plus what he achieved at Ipswich was remarkable as (he was) on a shoestring budget! And for me he is brilliant at motivating players.” Popular League of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny had also thrown his name into the hat but it now appears to be McCarthy’s job to lose.
Elderly couple found dead in Kilkenny home Spice Girls’ Croke Park show An elderly couple who were found dead in their home in Kilkenny on Wednesday evening may have succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning, it has been reported. Gardaí are currently trying to determine the cause of deaths of the man, who was 83, and the woman, who was 79. They were discovered by a family member at their residence on the outskirts of the city. It is believed that they may have been in the house for a number of days. Gardaí examined the scene at Kilder-
ry on the Johnswell Road over the past two days and the outcome of a post-mortem examination will determine the course of the Garda investigation in the case.
sells out in two hours Tickets for the Spice Girls’ reunion tour at Croke Park went on sale yesterday morning at 9am – and sold out within two hours. Mel B, Mel C, Emma and Geri will be the first female pop group to headline the venue when they perform on May 24 of next year. Their Dublin date was the first to be announced outside of the UK last week. The group, who first rose to prominence in the 1990s, announced six dates across
the UK earlier this month but later added a further six due to the scale of demand. All 12 concerts have already sold out. The Spice Girls, who split up in 2000, last played together at the London Olympics in 2012. All original members performed that night but Victoria Beckham has confirmed that she will not take part in the upcoming reunion tour. Jess Glynne will support the group on the tour, which will kick off at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester on March 29.

in organising our wedding reception. All our guests were very impressed by Pat and his team’s efficiency and professionalism, from the drinks reception to the delicious meal. The venue itself was the ideal location and the newly refurbished bridal suite and rooms were stylish, bright and comfortable. We would highly recommend the Westlodge for any occasion and look forward to returning to the hotel in the near future. Laurie & Kenneth July 2018

Overlooking beautiful Bantry Bay, the Westlodge Hotel is the idyllic backdrop for creating perfect memories of a perfect day. But don’t take our word for it, here is a selection of testimonials …. Where do I begin, I can’t thank the Westlodge enough, our wedding was everything we hoped for and more. The venue was stunning, the staff were amazing. Can’t thank Pat and his team enough who
went out of their way to make everything perfect before and on the day. The catering staff were amazing, the food was of the highest standard and plentiful. Every single guest couldn’t believe the quality and service of the Westlodge. Myself and my husband are from Wales and chose to get married in Ireland and the Westlodge made it so easy to plan even though we were a fair distance away. I would highly recommend. Thank you Westlodge! Mr and Mrs Jones Katie & Daniel July 2018 My husband and I had our wedding reception in the Westlodge on the 21.07.2018. We can’t thank Pat Gill and his team enough for all their patience and help
We chose The Westlodge for a number of reasons. From the first night we went to look at it, we knew it was for us. Pat, Brid and Norma were so easy to deal with, so helpful and really interested in our day. It is in a spectacular location with beautiful views of Bantry Bay. The food is fantastic and the service second to none. Elene & Mike 24th August 2018 Would highly recommend the Westlodge Hotel! We got married here in September and it was amazing! The food was outstanding and staff were fantastic! Would especially like to thank Pat and Brid who both couldn’t do enough for us! We also had a BBQ on the Saturday and food and service was again fantastic! All our guests have commented about a fantastic weekend! Thanks again all, can’t wait to come back again. Top tips for a Winter wedding MADELEINE DOYLE, award winning wedding co-ordinator at The Rose Hotel gives her top tips for a winter wedding. MADELEINE DOYLE OF THE ROSE HOTEL, who this year was awarded ‘Wedding Manager of the Year’ at the inaugural Connect Kerry Hospitality Awards, puts together her last-minute top tips for a winter wedding.
Madeline says: “Winter weddings are so chic and elegant but they can present a few more challenges than a Summer wedding. With that in mind I’ve put together my top tips for making sure that your big day runs without a hitch!”
1. WARM UP YOUR GUESTS
4. LET IT GLOW
A warm welcome drink will ensure your guests are warm and cheery once they arrive. It makes an interesting alternative to bubbles such as mulled wine or spiced apple cider.
Use lighting to create a warm and festive atmosphere. Candles and tea light are an easy and affordable way to create a romantic setting.
2. WINTER WEDDING FAVOURS Cosy blankets, festive sparklers, mulled wine spices, candy canes or hot chocolate making kits will add a magical Winter touch as a Winter wedding favour.
5. TIME THOSE PHOTOGRAPHS Good light for photos can be gone as early as 2pm in the Winter so make sure you plan your portrait time with your photographer to take advantage of the best light.
3. CHECK TRAVEL TIMES Bad weather can mean bad traffic so allow yourself extra time to travel to your ceremony – no matter the distance. Luckily at The Rose Hotel we offer complimentary use of the Rolls Royce, so at least you’ll travel in style!

Garden Magic Caring for graves in all seasons Words: Debby Looney
Maintaining graves can be time consuming, arduous and sometimes difficult emotionally. At this time of year, more so than any other, our departed loved ones are on our minds, and one way in which to show we care and remember them, is by tidying up their resting place, and cheering it up with flowers or Christmas wreaths. Unfortunately, most graveyards are open to the elements and windswept, and choosing the correct plants can be difficult. First of all, I recommend using low pots, preferably glazed terracotta, as bowls and low pots will not catch as much wind and will be a lot less likely to blow away. Also, being planted that bit lower provides the plants with remarkably more shelter than in a standard pot. I generally nudge people in the direction of heathers as they will flower and remain evergreen. As well as that they can tolerate a lot of wind. It surprises me how many people do not like heathers, and in this case I recommend ivy, Pernettya, Skimmia, Euonymus, or Dwarf Hebe. Buxus plants are also an ideal choice. Ornamental grass such as Carex Evergold is also ideal. For an
extra splash of colour, painted heathers are a good choice, they do not need any care whatsoever. For flowers, pansies and violas are reliable, as they are in the summer, but if the winter is very wet, they might get blackspot. In this case Bellis, or Batchelor’s Buttons, which look like daisies, are completely reliable. Cyclamen, though vibrant and pretty, are not ideal for graves – or even pots for that matter! They hate rain, and if it is very cold their survival rate is not guaranteed. Ornamental cabbages are among the best plants for a cold, open or windy spot. When potting your planters, use the lightest compost available in winter, and if possible, mix with Perlite or vermiculite to ensure drainage. Using compost with John Innes or mixing potting grit into compost will cause the soil to compact and waterlogging will ensue. This is best avoided!

Jaguar
Jaguar communicates with traffic lights Jaguar has previewed new technology that communicates with a city’s infrastructure to keep traffic moving freely. The new tech, called the Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory system (GLOSA), actively ‘talks’ to approaching traffic lights and then adjusts the speed of the Jaguar approaching. Tested on a heavily modified Jaguar F-PACE SUV, the function ensures less time is spent wasted at a standstill at lights. JLR says if all vehicles harnessed similar tech and deployed it in cities there would be safer, freer flowing traffic in urban areas and, with less heavy braking, lower real-world emissions.
Motorsport
Six of the best for Ogier Sébastien Ogier clinched his sixth consecutive FIA world rally championship title after a chaotic finale in Australia last Sunday. A composed drive to fifth was in marked contrast to the heartbreak suffered by Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak, who both crashed whilst trying to keep their championship hopes alive. Ogier’s calmness shone through after heavy rain turning the gravel roads into a muddy bath on the final day. He was faultless while both Neuville and rally leader Tänak escaped brushes with the scenery during the morning’s opening three speed tests. Worse was to follow. Neuville parked his Hyundai i20 three stages from the finish after swiping a bank and ripping a rear wheel from his car. In the next test Tänak slithered into a tree and his Toyota Yaris ground to a halt with no drive. Ogier could afford a celebratory drive through the final Power Stage in the knowledge the championship was already secured in his final appearance in M-Sport’s Ford Fiesta before switching to Citroën
in 2019. Latvala secured his first win since Sweden 2017 and secured the manufacturers’ title for Toyota Gazoo Racing in its second season back in the WRC after a 17-year absence. Craig Breen visited the scenery a remarkable five times in six stages but survived to finish seventh after Teemu Suninen retired his Fiesta before the final test following an impact in the previous stage.
A fully electric original Ford Mustang
This isn’t an “ordinary” Sixties Ford Mustang. This Sixties Ford Mustang is fully electric, capable of accelerating harder and faster than any production Ford Mustang has ever done. London-based company Charge Automotive has announced its intention to build 499 of these fully electric classic Mustangs, with prices starting at €230,000. For that, you get the officially licensed Ford Mustang bodyshell and a world of modern-day electric force.
There’s a 64kWh battery pack allied to an electric motor producing 300kW and 1,200Nm. In piston-engined terms, you’re looking at just over 400bhp and a whopping 885lb ft of torque. That’s enough to propel this classic to 62mph in just 3.09secs. The plan is to start shipping to customers in September 2019, and the 499 allocation will be available in both coupe and convertible styles.

There were beautiful historic rally cars on display and a large crowd in attendance as Killarney & District Motor Club held the official launch of the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally in Scotts Hotel on Sunday. MC on the night was none other than Mike Marshall. He introduced Donal Grady of Kerry County Council who spoke of how important the rally is to Killarney Town, bringing a welcomed revenue boost to the local economy. TD Michael Healy-Rae spoke on the commitment and dedication of the voluntary club members involved and their ability to host an event of this magnitude every year. Other guest speakers included Michael O’Mahoney of Rentokil Initial and Paul Nagle who spoke of his delight to be competing once again on the rally that was the brainchild of his father, Maurice, over 22 years ago. Officials, organisers, competitors, sponsors, distinguished guest speakers and dignitaries of Killarney town were also on hand to support the event. A minute’s silence was observed for well-known broadcaster Weeshie Fogarty who sadly passed away that very morning. Weeshie was a great supporter of Killarney & District Motor Club and will be sadly missed by its members.

Killarney Toastmasters Club
If you would like to explore the amazing world of public speaking, why not come along to one of our Tuesday evening meetings? The Killarney Toastmasters Club meets the second and last Tuesday of every month, from 8pm to 10pm, at the Dromhall Hotel. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to take it at their own pace. The club acknowledges that we all have different abilities and priorities. Our last meeting took place on Tuesday, November 13, and it was yet again another vibrant and friendly club meeting. The entertainment of the night unfolded with a number of fun and engaging topics for discussion; topics included a random act of kindness, vanity and feminism, to name but a few. The next club meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 27 and is always welcome to new guests.

Father We all gathered around him, And watched him as he slept, With sadness in our hearts, And flowing tears so freely wept. We knew what lay before us, We felt it in our hearts, And though he seemed, So close to us then, We were many worlds apart. We watched him as he lay in silence, Waiting for him to open his eyes, To look up at us all and say, “No tears, no heartaches And no sad goodbyes”
When someone you love dies, You never quite get over it, You just learn to slowly, Go on without them … But always keeping them, Tucked safely in your heart. Sadly missed and never forgotten by your loving grandson Denis and Maria. xxx

Players must come together to force schedule change Adam Moynihan It certainly appears as though last week’s article struck a nerve locally, particularly amongst players who are sick and tired of training and playing well into December. Everyone I’ve spoken to – players, club officers and supporters alike – agrees that a 12-month season is unfair and that something has to change. Dr Crokes’ first round O’Donoughue Cup game against Fossa will not take place until December 9, which means that this year’s competition might not finish before Christmas Day. Some players have said that earlier rounds could have been played earlier in the year but the East Kerry Board didn’t avail of free weekends. Others have suggested scrapping the unpopular Super League competition (which takes place at the beginning of the season in February) and starting the East Kerry Championship at that time of year instead. Last week’s exclusive article revealed the extent to which local players are fed up with the scheduling of the O’Donoghue Cup but what happens next? Unfortunately, I was unable to pin the East Kerry Board down for a comment this week. I would be hopeful of speaking to them in the near future. But if players really want the schedule to change, they have to come together and do something about it. If each senior team in the district writes down their concerns and shares those concerns with their club, that would be a very positive first step. In fact, one senior club official I spoke to said that this is the only way of making anything happen. If the players are unanimous in wanting something, the clubs will have to communicate this to the East Kerry Board and the East Kerry Board will have to listen. At the end of the day, the Board answers to the clubs, and the clubs have a responsibility to look after their players. I suppose the reality is that it’s easy for me and every other player in the district to complain but, when it comes down to it, are we willing to take action?
Crokes & Kilcummin gunning for Munster double Adam Moynihan
There could be a few sore heads around the Killarney area on Monday morning. Local clubs Dr Crokes and Kilcummin are gunning for Munster final glory and if the bookies are to be believed, there’s a very strong possibility that both squads will be arriving back into town on Sunday with silverware in tow. The Crokes are an eye-watering 1/25 to prevail in their senior decider against St Joseph’s Miltown-Malbay and it would take a monumental showing from the Claremen to cause an upset in the Gaelic Grounds. Pat O’Shea’s team have been on the warpath since their shock defeat to Kerins O’Rahilly’s in the early stages of the Kerry SFC and the free-scoring exploits of Tony Brosnan and Kieran O’Leary have propelled them to a third consecutive Munster final. Crokes are on the hunt for their fifth provincial title this decade and their eighth in total. Only Nemo Rangers (16) have won more. Miltown-Malbay defeated The Nire by eight points
in the semi-final but history is not on their side; the Munster Championship has only been won by a Clare team three times since the tournament’s inception in 1964. Kilcummin will be hoping to win their first ever Munster title when they face Fermoy in Mallow and they are odds-on favourites (1/5) to do so. The Kerrymen were far too strong for Kilmacthomas (Waterford) in the last four and their hopes in the final will be further boosted by Kevin McCarthy and Kieran Murphy who are expected to return from injury. McCarthy made his mark in the green and gold of Kerry this season while Murphy caught the eye with a string of impressive performances for his club and for East Kerry in the senior championship. You’re talking about two players who could be playing intercounty in 2019 and if they both line out on Sunday, Kilcummin should have more than enough to get over the line. Dr Crokes forward Micheál Burns. Verdict: Crokes by 12 and Kilcummin by 4

In his younger days he was very interested in basketball and he played with The Busby Babes in the Parish Hall a mere stone’s throw from his home in O’Sullivan’s Place. They didn’t have any jerseys but that didn’t prove an obstacle for Weeshie. He wrote to Matt Busby explaining their predicament and the lack of sponsorship at that time. Not even the great Busby could refuse the Killarney man and it didn’t take long before a new set of jerseys were winging their way to Killarney. It was a long shot and a brave shot by Weeshie but his persistence paid off. He was a lifelong follower of Manchester United and he had many friendly arguments with his son Kieran who supports Spurs. His main interest in sport was the GAA in all its aspects, particulary Gaelic football. He was a loyal player and valued team member of the Legion, holding down almost every officer’s role in the club. How often did you hear him break in to an interview with the heart-filled comment, “that’s my own club, the Legion”? Yes, indeed, “my good friend” was another great phrase of his. He won an O’Donoghue cup medal with Legion in 1967. He had the distinction of playing with Kerry in all grades: minor, U-21 and junior, winning an All-Ireland medal in this grade in 1967. He also played senior as an understudy to Johnny Culloty, his near neighbour and fellow clubman. He won an All-Ireland Vocational final with the Kerry Techs on the same team as his fellow Legionnaire, the great and classy Sylvie O’Grady. He won three Kerry SFCs in a row with East Kerry and was the sub ‘keeper in the All-Ireland Club final which East Kerry won in its inaugural year (1971). Yours truly manned the posts for that historic win.

Referee
Having played so much football himself served him well in another facet of his life in the GAA. He was a top class referee and I was always very pleased to play in the games refereed by Weeshie. Not alone was he well versed in the rule book but this was also complemented by common sense. He knew the different moods players brought to the game and made due allowance for weather conditions. He didn’t have to use disciplinary cards; he depended on common sense and respect players had for him. Mind you he was no softie and could deal with the dirty player with authority and with discretion. His motto was not to throw the rule book at the offending player when a page would suffice. I often said to him that it was a joy to play in the games he refereed because you could be sure the game would flow. He was in charge for three All-Ireland football semi-finals, but never got to take charge of a final. That was a mistake by the GAA authorities.
Collector general
Weeshie was a great collector of items of written reports of matches and match programmes. These stories, he deemed, were collectors items, which was another great phrase of his. When he finished his playing days with his club, he put his heart and soul into collecting the history of the Legion, culminating in the publication of the McNamee Award-winning ‘A Legion of Memories’, which outlined the first 50 years of the Legion club.

He won four McNamee Awards and in 2008 and in 2010 he won the National PPI Radio Award as National Sports Broadcaster of the year. That was a great honour and more kudos were to follow with his three publications: Off Mike/On Camera, Dr Eamonn O’Sullivan: A Man Before His Time and My Beautiful Obsession: Chasing the Kerry Dream.
Terrace Talk
Weeshie will be remembered with affection for what he did with Terrace Talk. He was there from the very start and created a special niche in broadcasting, originally in the company of his co-founder Liam Higgins. He travelled all over Kerry and throughout the whole country with that roving microphone in search of the inside story behind the mere statistic. Like Mícheál O’Hehir and Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, he had a story to tell and he embellished many a match with his infectious passion for the games he was broadcasting. Listening to Terrace Talk from 6 to 8 every Monday night is a must for all lovers of sport and that reached a worldwide audience via the internet.
In Conversation
I really enjoyed his Wednesday night programme In
Conversation where he interviewed the plain people of Ireland and switched on that microphone, letting the interviewee tell his/her own life story without interruption. Those were extra special. What he has done for future students of social history is incalculable. He brought to life the worlds of the plain people of Ireland. Born in Cork, his family moved to Killarney when he was three months old, and Killarney was his home for 77 years. He was a psychiatric nurse in St Finan’s until his retirement in 1996. Then he started a new life of broadcasting for which we are truly indebted. He blew the whistle in his last match on Sunday last for the good Lord called for the ball. No injury time, no time added on. Bhí an t-am istigh agus fáilte mór roimh Weeshie ar Neamh. Ard fhear ab ea Weeshie. Scribhneoir agus craoltóir den scoth. Fear ann féin leis na focail binn blasta. Slán abhaile Weeshie go dtí Achadh Dhá Eo is go gcuitítear do shaothar leat. Brón ar an mbás sé a dhubh ár gcroí-se. Thanks for the memories. I am missing you already but the greatest loss of all is for his devoted wife, Joan, and Kieran, Carolann and Denise.

Weeshie was a remarkable man The late GAA pundit, broadcaster and writer Weeshie Fogarty who died at the weekend pictured interviewing a guest on Terrace Talk on Radio Kerry.
Adam Moynihan When I was studying to be a journalist in UL, we were tasked with interviewing a media professional from our hometown. For me, Weeshie Fogarty was the obvious choice. He was high profile, he lived down the road and he was Legion. It was a no-brainer. My father knew Weeshie well from all their years being involved with the Legion together so when he reached out to ask for his help, Weeshie was only too happy to oblige. He told my father that I could call up to his house in O’Sullivan’s Place the very next day. To be honest, I was nervous enough walking up to his front door. I was around 19 or 20 and I hadn’t interviewed anyone as famous as Weeshie before. And the prospect of interviewing someone who had such a huge reputation for being a great interviewer was daunting. Weeshie, of all people, would know if I was making a balls of it. But from the second he opened the door, Weeshie put me completely at ease. “How’s the football going?” he asked. “I saw you playing the last day. You did well.” That last part was a lie but it was a nice lie, in fairness to him. We spoke at length about his upbringing, his love of sports, his time at St Finan’s and his career as a broadcaster. I’ve interviewed plenty of people

over the years but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever spoken to someone so engaging. He had such a distinctive way of speaking. It was punchy, abrasive even, but it was lyrical and easy at the same time. As soon as he started talking, you were instantly under his spell.
I don’t think I’ve ever spoken to someone so engaging One thing he said that day has stayed with me ever since. I asked him about his thick Killarney accent and the fact that he hadn’t adapted it or toned it down for radio. It was something that had been on my mind at the time because I had only recently realised how strong my own accent was. College friends from other parts of the country got a great
kick out of my Kerry twang. To be honest, before I lived outside of Kerry it wasn’t something I ever really thought about. Also, not many people on radio or on TV sound like we do. If I wanted to be a successful journalist, would I have to shift the way I talk into neutral? So I asked Weeshie if he had ever considered toning down his Killarney accent when he was on the air. “No,” he said. “Never. The great John B Keane once told me, ‘Whatever you do, Weeshie, never change your voice, never change you accent. Be yourself. If you’re not yourself, you’ll fail’.” Weeshie was intensely proud of where he came from and his accent was very much a part of who he was. He remained true to himself and true to his roots, and he was very successful doing it. As an aspiring journalist from Killarney, I found that really inspirational. On a personal level, I used to love how he would introduce Legion players who were lining out for Kerry. “Here’s Brian Kelly. He’s from my own club, the Legion - the Killarney Legion.” The way he said that, with the emphasis on “Killarney”, and the pride you could hear in his voice, was really powerful and it still resonates with me years later. Weeshie was certainly a remarkable man and he will be sorely missed by this town and its people.

A great sportsman from a young age Weeshie Fogarty truly was an exceptional ambassador for sports in Killarney and as our pictures show, his love of sports started at a young age. Here are a selection of photos from the collections of Damien Switzer and Eamonn Keogh that show a young Weeshie lining out for his school and alongside his friends and neighbours.

Late Coffey try seals big win for Killarney U-14 League | Listowel 12-21 Killarney
Killarney secured a notable win over a strong, robust and heretofore unbeaten Listowel side last Saturday morning, played out in perfect conditions for rugby. Listowel’s large pack, matched by strength and size all over the pitch, was counteracted by Killarney’s fast-paced, fast-moving game in an intriguing tie. Killarney scored first when a concerted team effort resulted in a Pierce Slattery try under the post, converted by Finn Kennelly. Listowel responded immediately with a devastating attack coming from a turnover in the middle of the pitch which Killarney couldn’t halt. At this stage, the game was an exciting end-to-end contest with neither team getting the upper hand. The Killarney boys were unlucky just before halftime when a nicely worked try was subsequently chalked off for a foot in touch. Half-time score: 7-5 in Killarney’s favour. It was Killarney who again struck first in the second half when a combination from Cathan Harrington, Shane O’Sullivan and Josh Coffey resulted in another Pierce Slattery try, which was once again ably converted by Finn Kennelly.
Listowel at this stage piled on the pressure and spent a lengthy period in the Killarney 22. The incessant pressure told when a Killarney player was yellow-carded for a high tackle and a converted try under the posts soon followed. With only two points now between the sides and both teams giving it their all, the last 10 minutes was an exciting affair. Disciplined and concerted team play by Killarney led to the decisive try by Josh Coffey from a line break two minutes from time. Ultimately, Killarney had the game plan to stop Listowel’s strong ball carriers through well-organised, committed, well-executed tackles throughout, particularly by Alex O’Leary, Cathan Harrington, Stephen Walsh and Daire O’Brien along with some superb counter-rucking by Shane O’Sullivan. Donncha Coffey’s running ability and the able performance of Gearóid Sugrue in his first match as scrumhalf all contributed to halting Listowel’s superb start to the season. Credit must go to the gracious and sporting Listowel management and to a very fair and competent refereeing performance by Gus Sweeney who generously offered his services at short notice.

SmallTalk
Adam Moynihan talks to strength and conditioning expert Joe O’Connor about Killarney’s top-level athletes, helping Limerick to their first All-Ireland in 45 years and the future of Kerry football Hi Joe. How are you? Not too bad now.
that these are “athletes who happen to be footballers”.
Busy? Ah sure… Looking busy is the key, isn’t it?
Who’s the most athletic player you’ve ever coached? Probably Brick Walsh when I was down in Waterford.
That’s a fact. You’re MCing an interesting event in Killarney on Monday evening. Can you tell me a bit about it? The event is the brainchild of Tomás Griffin and one of the main goals is to show recognition towards the individual athletes of Killarney who are often forgotten, even though they’ve competed on the world stage. We also want to acknowledge how great Killarney is as a hub for generating physical activity and sport in general. It boxes well above its weight. There are very few places that produce so many high-achieving athletes. Why do we have so many top-level athletes? It’s a tough one to answer but I think it has to go back to the coaches. A lot of the time people talk about facilities but there are a lot of good coaches in Kerry in general, particularly in rowing and athletics, and obviously in Gaelic football and other sports. I get the sense as well that there’s a good sense of community and a willingness to help people in Killarney. And you see a lot of active families in the park there as well. With the natural amenities you have in Killarney, I think it would be hard not to go out into the outdoors because it’s so beautiful. It was obviously a big year for you personally. How much did it mean to be part of the first Limerick team to win an All-Ireland since 1973? Growing up in Limerick and growing up around the GAA, it was unbelievable to be part of it. When I got involved with Limerick it wasn’t to be involved to win, it was just to do my bit for the county as best I could. I was only coming in and putting the icing on the cake – there was so much work done there at underage and throughout the clubs.
What made him special? Brick had speed, power, endurance, he didn’t get injured, he played every game, he could play high ball or low ball, he could turn in tight space, he could open up the legs. He could get physical but he was very skilful. Brick was a 9/10 on everything but a 10/10 on nothing, which is the perfect profile. Apart from this year’s All-Ireland, do any other moments stand out for you in your career? Winning with Clare in 2013 was also a big one. Switching codes then, working with the likes of Lizzie Lee who went to the Rio Olympics was good, as was seeing Shona Heaslip doing well and winning National Cross Country titles. For the last four years, I’ve been working Equestrian Ireland and they finished second in the World Cup this year. But I don’t judge it by winning things really. It’s about seeing progress. I know it sounds cheesy but I get most of my joy away from the cameras, at training or in the gym when you see people improving. That’s where the fun is. If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? David Rudisha, Christy Ring and Muhammad Ali.
But as far as Kerry goes, I think there’s a great future. There’s an awful lot of talented footballers coming through but there’s also a culture coming through
Are you a Netflix person? What’s the last show you binge-watched? I watch a bit of Netflix. I travel a lot so regular TV doesn’t really work. What I watch varies widely though. It’s pretty much what the wife will watch with me! I’m watching The Good Doctor at the moment. I’m enjoying that. Who’s your favourite band/artist? UB40. You’re going way back with that one! Yeah UB40 or Otis Redding. They’d be my two. And last one… What would you sing if a sing-song kicked off? I’m the one who’s never asked to sing but if I do sing, I’m told to shut up.
A lot of people are making a big deal about it being the first in 45 years but this process started about 10 years ago. It’s just coming to fruition now. You were Head of Athletic Development with Kerry football for the last year. Do we have good athletes coming through at the moment? There’s a great underage structure in place in Kerry – similar to Limerick - and with the new facilities in Currans, I think the future is very bright. Jason McGahan has gone into that position now so you’ve got a very good guy in there on a full-time basis and he’ll drive the ship on again. My role was just to go in and set up systems for athletic performance and pass the buck on again.
Joe O’Connor
Do you have any superstitions? Not particularly… My background is science at the end of the day so I’ll leave the superstitions to someone else! Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? WhatsApp. An awful lot of what I do is through WhatsApp. What’s your most-used emoji?
All the best, Joe. See you Monday. Thanks, Adam. Joe O’Connor will MC ‘Strategies for Life’ at the Great Southern Hotel on Monday, November 26 at 7pm. Killarney’s five Olympians will be honoured at the event, which is being hosted by Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and AIB. Places are limited.
