PAGE SIX Controversial Casey Rakes in 28% of Kerry Votes Words: Adam Moynihan

V

Controversial presidential election candidate Peter Casey appears to have struck a chord with at least some of Kerry’s voters as he pulled in 28% of votes in the county. Casey’s shock late surge in the polls left him with 23% of the votes nationally, a considerable distance behind sitting president Michael D Higgins who attracted 55.8% of the vote. Interestingly, the former Dragons’ Den star had been polling at just 2% prior to making those comments about the Travelling Community. The outpouring of support he received thereafter and on election day seems to indicate that some people agree with his sentiments. Others, who stopped short of condoning what Casey actually said, claimed to like the fact that he “says what he thinks”. Many political observers are now tipping Casey for a run at the Dáil while predicting a spate of copy cat Caseys popping up at the next general election. I’m not so sure. I think Casey’s relative success can and should be attributed to a protest vote of sorts, and not some “rise of the right” moment. The result of the election was a foregone conclusion and the Office of the President of Ireland holds such little actual authority that it can almost be considered politically irrelevant. There was no real danger of Casey getting in and

Town’s Parking Meters to be Replaced

V

Killarney’s parking meters are set for a major upgrade that will give motorists the option to make payments via credit cards and mobile devices. The tendering process to replace the existing machines has officially commenced and it is hoped that the new meters will make things a bit easier for those parking in and around the town. The existing system has not been without its problems. Earlier this year, a 60 cent per hour parking meter in the Lewis Road car park was out of service for a considerable amount of time and frustrated motorists were left with no other option but to purchase a day-long parking ticket for €3 at a nearby machine. The new system will be more reliable and will also reduce the amount of cash being taken at the machines.

even if he did, what difference could he possibly make to the day-to-day-lives of the people who voted for him? A vote for Casey was simply a portion of the disaffected in our society lashing out at the establishment. The overall turnout was extremely low as well. You can’t really gauge the mood of a nation from such a paltry sample. And even if you could, and the results accurately reflect how people really feel, a liberally minded poet and career politician won in a landslide.

Michael D Higgins topped the polls in every single constituency in the country, earning 55.8% of the first preference votes. As victories go, it could hardly have been more comprehensive. Whether or not Casey goes full-time with the politicking remains to be seen, but I would be confident that the people of Ireland won’t go down the road of electing candidates who base their campaigns on prejudicial sound bites. We have already seen how that tactic has panned out elsewhere.

New, Larger Aldi Gets Green Light German discount supermarket Aldi has unveiled plans for a new store in Killarney that will be 50% larger than their existing premises. The shop floor at the new operation, which will be located adjacent to the company’s current site in Ardshanavooley, will span 1,254m². Aldi say the new supermarket will have more chillers, a wide selection of fresh food, hi-spec fixtures and fittings and new signage that provides a more efficient and hasslefree shopping experience. 133 free parking spaces will be provided on site. Construction is expected to be completed in 2020. Once the new store has opened, the current store, which has been in operation for 12 years, will close down. Colm Foley, Aldi Killarney’s Assistant Store Manager, welcomed the news. “The whole Aldi Killarney team is delighted with Kerry County Council’s decision to grant planning permission for our new state-of-the-art store,” he said. “Introducing the Project Fresh format will provide an even better shopping experience to our customers, while its environmentally friendly design will contribute positively to the fabric of the town.” The development will also be professionally and comprehensively landscaped and provide vehicular and pedestrian access from Arbutus Drive and Park Road. All of this will be considered as part of the Traffic Impact Assessment, an Aldi spokesperson confirmed.

“The development will see a substantial investment into the local area as well as the creation of new permanent jobs once the store opens, along with many more during the construction phase,” an official statement read. Aldi’s existing store will remain fully open during the entire construction phase to serve customers. Once the new store is completed, the current store will be returned to the landlord. Since opening its doors in December 2006, the Aldi store, which is located near Tesco and Deerpark Retail Park, has proved a popular option for locals hoping to save on their weekly shop.

Over €30k Raised in John’s Memory Family, friends and well-wishers gathered in the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Saturday for a coffee morning in memory of the late John Broderick. Popular Killarney man John, who tragically took his own life earlier this year, was fondly remembered at the event while much-needed funds were also raised for suicide prevention charity Pieta House. Over €10,300 was raised at the coffee morning and a further €7,000 was collected at a similar event at Fexco in Killorglin, the workplace of John’s wife, Sandra. When online donations and cheques are taken into account, a phenomenal €32,600 has been raised for John’s Pieta House tribute page in just seven weeks. Saturday’s gathering was made all the more poignant by the fact that John and Sandra celebrated their wedding at the same venue just six short years ago. “Although it was difficult and upsetting for us remembering such happy times in that room just a short time previous, we also knew that what we were doing would help others who suffer with hopelessness and depression,” Sandra said. “My husband John was an amazing person who did so much for charity. He was a kind, caring person who always put everyone else before himself. He was a

fantastic husband and a proud father to our beautiful little girl Grace and I know he would so happy seeing what we have done to help others who struggle like he did.” Sandra also expressed her family’s gratitude to everyone who helped make the morning so special. “Me, Grace and John’s family would like to thank the management and staff of the Killarney Avenue Hotel for their generosity and help setting up this event,” she said. “We would also like to thank Fexco for being such great work colleagues and friends who supported us the whole way through the organising and planning, the businesses in Killarney, Killorglin, Tralee, Castleisland and further afield who very kindly donated beautiful spot prizes, family and friends who went to the trouble of organising huge amounts of home baking, our entertainment and guest appearances who gave their time on the morning and close friends who helped out in every way possible to make the whole event the success it was. “John’s work friends also showed huge support before and during the event and it meant a lot to us to see them all there on the morning, and to hear about their happy memories of John which they now cherish.” Visit fundraise.pieta.ie/fundraiser/sandrabroderick to make a donation.

Donaghy & Gooch say ‘no’ to Fine Gael

Former Kerry All-Star Kieran Donaghy has become the second footballer to turn down the advances of Fine Gael in 2018. Donaghy, who recently announced his retirement from intercounty football, was reportedly approached by FG officials about the possibility of joining Junior Minister Brendan Griffin on the party’s ticket for the next general election. The Austin Stacks big man has reportedly declined the offer in order to focus on his business interests. Donaghy’s good friend and former teammate Colm ‘The Gooch’ Cooper was also on the radar earlier this year but it is believed that the man many call the greatest footballer of all time is not interested in a career in politics either. If either did choose to run, they wouldn’t be the first Kerry footballer to join forces with Fine Gael: Jimmy Deenihan represented the party in Dáil Éireann between 1987 and 2011. With Gooch and Donaghy out of the picture, Fine Gael’s search for a high profile candidate continues.

Farmers object to proposed South Kerry Greenway A submission has been made to An Bórd Pleanála by the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) objecting to the proposed South Kerry Greenway project. The farming organisation say they are objecting to the failure of Kerry County Council (KCC) to adhere to Government policy on greenway development. According to the IFA, the council had not honoured a commitment given to landowners that lands wouldn’t be acquired using compulsory purchase orders (CPOs). IFA national environment chairman

Thomas Cooney commented on the matter. “Recreational routes such as the proposed greenway in south Kerry have an important role to play in promoting agri-tourism and economic activity in rural areas,” said Thomas Cooney, IFA National Environment Chairman. “It is with regret that Kerry County Council has forced the IFA into a position where we have to object to this project, in order to restore the rights of the farmers affected.” Kerry IFA Chairman Pat O’Driscoll said that farmers af-

fected by the proposed development felt misled. “When the project started, they were clearly told CPOs were off the table, yet the Council ignored this commitment and is now seeking to use the offices of An Bórd Pleanála to compulsorily carve up almost 50% of the farm holdings, for a cycle track. This is not acceptable and it’s not in keeping with the Government’s policy for greenway development, which requires local authorities to design greenways ‘to traverse field boundaries and hedgelines to avoid severance.”

TOWNTALK Killarney Boxer to Make Pro Debut The KEP ensures that 80 children receive a hot meal five evenings per week.

Killarney woman Siobhán O’Leary who will make her professional debut on November 24.

“Boxing fans will like her. They will like her boxing style and they will like her attitude.” The words of Stephen Sharpe of Boxing Ireland Promotions, the company representing Irish boxing’s newest professional: Killarney native Siobhán O’Leary. Siobhán, who lives in Limerick, recently made the switch to the pros following a successful amateur career and she will make her much-anticipated bow at a major event in Dublin. ‘Celtic Clash 7’ at Good Counsel GAA Club in Drimnagh will feature a number of established and promising fighters and excitement is building ahead of Siobhán’s first foray into big time boxing. On turning pro, the Killarney woman said it was the best decision for her and her career. “The amateur game has been good to me, but now it’s time to move forward,” she said. “I got into boxing quite late through participation in a white collar boxing tournament with my former club, Corpus Christi in Limerick. That was in 2012. I absolutely fell in love with the sport through that and have boxed ever since. This decision wasn’t made lightly and I couldn’t do it without the support of my partner Maeve and my family and friends.” Siobhán now trains in the capital with Eddie Hyland and word is spreading around Dublin about the power-punching lady who’s sparring with men and doing big numbers in the gym. A full-time homeless services worker in Limerick, every spare minute of goes towards bettering herself ahead of November 24. O’Leary is eager to be let loose and is predicting a special night in Dublin in front of a few busloads of travelling fans. “The response from Limerick and Kerry has been overwhelming. I’m best when I’m under pressure. I know I’m going to be nervous, of course I’m going to be nervous - there’d be something wrong if you weren’t. I’m looking forward to a big crowd, I’m looking forward to the roar, I’m looking forward to getting under the lights, I’m looking forward to getting it all started and performing for my family and friends.” Tickets for the fight night are €55 (ringside) and €35 (unreserved) and are available from the boxers involved. Siobhán O’Leary can be contacted through her social media or by calling 086 0433170.

Kenyan Education Project continues amid rains & price hikes 2018 will be remembered in Kenya for the torrential and prolonged rains which fell during March and April which lead to loss of life, destruction of homes and property and damage to roads and farmland. It will also be remembered for the price hikes in petrol and mobile phone usage resulting from increased repayments on loans from foreign banks. It was against this background that the Kenyan Education Project (KEP) continued its work focusing on school sponsorships, supporting a parish feeding programme, a soccer academy and the local SVDP group. In the village of Embulbul, 80 young children from needy backgrounds receive a hot meal five evenings per week. For some it is their only meal of the day. It costs €650 per month to run the feeding programme. The KEP continues to increase its commitment to feeding the children by donating more money each year. A large number of students continue to be sponsored in the local primary and secondary schools, ensuring that their education continues. A number of students are sponsored to continue further studies, with one boy starting teacher education, another undertaking a business degree while a third continues on a medical science route. Jecinta, helped by the KEP to obtain a secretarial qualifications, is now working and returning to college part-time to continue her studies. The links with the local SVDP group remain strong, this year helping 15 families to purchase new beds, mattresses and blankets. Some of these families were visited by volunteers who saw first hand the harsh living conditions experienced by families on a daily basis. For the third successive year a summer camp was organised by the KEP. 30 young children from the village were treated to a week of arts and crafts, games day visits to parks as well as receiving new shoes for the school term. The Young Talents soccer academy made the news recently as their coach, Kaka, was nominated and chosen for a trip of a lifetime to travel to the Arsenal soccer academy to work with coaches there. The coach was shortlisted from nominations throughout Africa, a huge boost to the work of academy which the KEP supports financially. KEP founder Eddie Sheehy has expressed his gratitude to the primary and secondary schools who continue to support the work, to all who support the table quiz, coffee morning and church collection and to all who believe in the importance and value of the work of the KEP.

Clifford gets his first All-Star It may have been his first season at senior level but that didn’t prevent footballing sensation David Clifford from catching the eye. The Fossa native was Kerry’s standout player in 2018 and yesterday he was rewarded for his performances with one of the game’s highest accolades. Clifford has made the PwC All-Star team, a remarkable feat for such a young player and one made all the more impressive

considering the disappointing nature of Kerry’s campaign. Clifford shone during the Munster Championship and memorably gave Kerry a lifeline in the Super 8s with a superb last minute goal. The 20-year-old is joined on the All-Star team by seven Dublin players, three Monaghan players, two Tyrone players, Ryan McHugh from Donegal and Ian Burke from Galway.

Tourism in Killarney is enjoying a boost this autumn with hotels and other accommodation busier than normal, thanks to numbers arriving to catch the deer rutting season amid spectacular autumn foliage. Large stags and their hinds within metres of the lakeside Lake Hotel dining room have become a nightly fixture for camera-wearing tourists and diners. Social media is right now full of extraordinary pictures of red stags bellowing at dawn. A recent red deer walk by the Irish Deer Commission and the National Parks and Wildlife Service drew visitors from Dublin, Waterford, Wexford and other regions, all of them staying in local hotels and accommodation. However, fears are being expressed about wildlife crime against deer by unscrupuBe Inspired lous gangs operating along the Cork/Kerry border between Kilgarvan and Coolea, Be Inspired and in the Kilcummin area north of Killarney. Wildlife crime against deer has soared this season in the southwest, the Irish Deer Commission has revealed. Meetings between the deer commission and gardaí have been taking place in the Cork/Kerry border area in an effort to tackle illegal night-time hunting in particular, but also other wildlife crime against deer, commission spokesman Damien Hannigan said. The commission, made up of conservationists and deer stalkers and experienced hunters, has had 34 reports of wildlife crime against deer since September 1, when the season for hunting male deer under permit opened. The number of reports is the FREE DELIVERY highest ever than during the recession Mr Hannigan said. BROCHURE The season for hunting of female deer under permit opened yesterday (November AVAILABLE 1) and there are fears of a further increase of the illegal hunting in advance of the Christmas season by gangs who sell the venison illegally. Deer are dazzled and then shot and in some cases chased to exhaustion by dogs. Negativity involving unsubstantiated claims that linking deer with the spread of TB and so on may be contributing to the increase, Mr Hannigan added. He is urging the public to report any night-time activity that might be targeting our deer.

Call for dedicated Alzheimer’s park

A Kerry county councillor has called for the provision of a dedicated Alzheimer’s Park in the county. The matter was raised by Cllr Michael Cahill at this month’s meeting of Kerry County Council. Cllr Cahill said a dedicated Alzheimer’s Park will serve as a respite for the ever-increasing number of people in our county that have been and continue to be diagnosed with this terrible illness and their Carers. “I believe it is important that Alzheimer patients, their carers and their families have some place where they can go and feel comfortable,” Cllr Cahill said. The Fianna Fáil councillor said that he understood that there was only one such park in the world, in Ohio, which was developed in the late 90s. This has proven to be a great success, he added. Cllr Cahill said he knew of a number of people who would be interested in contributing to the project if the council provided a site. His motion was seconded by the Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Norma Foley.

Letter Cost Of Remedial Work Must Not Be Borne By Taxpayers The deplorable situation whereby a number of fairly recently built schools are deemed unfit for purpose is a terrible reflection on all in involved. That we have not learned from all that has happened in the financial institutions due to lack of oversight is almost beyond understanding. That the Department of Education failed to ensure at every stage of construction that the building work was being done in accordance with proper standards beggars belief. That nobody seemed to care that the lives of children and their teachers may be in mortal danger is of almost criminal proportion. It is imperative that our Taoiseach and Minister for Education insist that the cost of remedial work will not be borne by the hard-pressed taxpayers of the country. Responsibility must be placed fairly and squarely on the shoulders and in the pockets of those responsible. For far too long irresponsible acts in the public domain have impacted most severely on the innocent and hard-working citizens. It cannot be thus in this instance. Thank you, Cllr Michael Gleeson

Election Asks More Questions Than It Answers Words: Anne Lucey

That Presidential election has been an eye-opener. And while it may have elected a president who was already installed in the “white” house in Phoenix Park, and a clear favourite of the chattering classes including most of the media columnists and practically all the political class, it has left open more questions than it has answered, and more divisions than could have been anticipated. The attitude towards the presidency, although no one dares draw the comparison, is that it allows us the return of the monarchy, albeit after an election. And we all miss a bit of royal pomp! It is a small little election in real terms. We are looking for someone regal and remote to install in what is, after all, the vice-regal lodge. If you skirt around Dublin of a day and go into their chapel in Dublin Castle or sit in the National Concert Hall and look at the décor, you come away with the idea that pre-1916 this was an Irish monarchy, with all the buttons and bells, the Anglo-Irish symbolism of harps and shamrocks and the colour green already. It’s just we now have a president, not a vice regent, to take the salute, to sit in the front pew (not that humanist Higgins seems to have too much mind for religion) and act high-mindedly with just the right amount of presidential disdain. You don’t want a revolution, but you don’t want to be too near the straight talking plebs either! Higgins gets that right, drowning us in polysyllables. Which brings me to one of the two or three great ironies of this election: the disaster it has been for Sinn Féin. Sinn Féin, of all parties the most anti-British, anti-monarchy, anti-royal anything, forced this exercise in the democratic process. They smelled the off-hand attitude to the peoples’ right to choose, by Leo and company, and called the bluff of Fine Gael and their foot soldiers Fianna Fáil. Labour and the Greens hardly count any more but, of course, Higgins was their candidate too. The attitude of Dr Leo and Mr Micheal towards the little matter of the presidential was, “Oh, let Michael D at it. We have more important things to do, what with Brexit and confidence and supply and maybe even an election Leo desperately wants”. The presidential is a blood sport anyway, and no one would catch the wily old fox Michael D and there would be great fun watching the chase, was the idea! And no money spent by them. Tally-ho all round! Well, it has been a disaster for Sinn Féin. Not least because their candidate came a miserable fourth nationally, beaten by two dragons, but also because it has shattered the idea that Sinn Féin has an army of blindly loyal voters out there. And it also shattered the idea that Sinn Féin sucks up the protest vote of middle Ireland. I had come to regard Sinn Féin as what FF used be: put up the donkey and they would vote for them as long as they bear the party colours. Well Liadh was no donkey and they didn’t vote for her either. And she should have stuck with the old vice-regal green shamrock and ignored the poppy! That is the first thing. The second is this has been, and continues to be, a disaster for Fianna Fáil. Casey stole the Soldiers of Destiny’s thunder and then put it up to them, speaking for “the ordinary people,” the ones Fianna Fáil used to represent. Casey spoke in ordinary Kavanagh prose, not out of the side of his mouth but straight from observations and uses unparliamentary phrases like, “shut your trap!” to Leo. Yet he is highly educated and a lot cleverer than he would have you think. He knocked some of the shine off bad poet Higgins’ polysyllables and high rhetoric academic references to some great and glorious socialist past in far off El Dorado. And he became the magnet for the protest vote, especially for middle Ireland, especially rural middle Ireland, who, as my Irish speaking friend

The genie is out of the bottle. What kind of genie, we do not yet know… colourfully put it to me, voted for Casey because they are “sick to f*** of it all!” I felt the election was turning out to be like that old medieval debate between “bookish learning” and “direct experience”, as to which weighs more. And now Casey wants not just to join but to lead Fianna Fáil. And believe me, a lot of the old grass roots, very many of the councillors (FF proposed him in Kerry, seconded by Johnny Healy-Rae) want him. So the complacency of the “nice” Fianna Fáil party leader Micheál Martin (that is how Casey devastatingly described him two days after the election) towards this little election has left them with a big problem. Martin and his cronies have roundly pooh-poohed Casey’s advances, so far. But can they really have any political sense if they turn away 342,727 first preference voters? And by the way, it is not one-in-five voters, it is nearer to one-infour voters. In Kerry alone 13,772 gave Casey number one. And that is the Number 1s. Not just in Kerry, Casey notched up a remarkable number of second preference from Higgins, journalists noticed. Put that in context: Sinn Féin’s Liadh Ní Riada, the girl from up the road, managed 4,253 Number 1s. The genie is out of the bottle. What kind of genie, we do not yet know, but it won’t go back in easily. And the final irony is the divisions are being hammered home by the so called left, high-minded as ever, self-regarding as ever, frothing at the mouth and labelling a substantial wedge of voters in this country bigots and racists! Which brings me to the final point. This election also leaves questions about the whole voting system. In Kerry, no political party was engaged enough to run a tally, and so the huge numbers of transfer votes have gone unremarked, in the PR system we preen ourselves about. There is also the fact that less than half the electorate, only 45 per cent in this county, bothered voting, and that only a handful of councillors, TDs or senators turned up at the marathon count in Killarney. For an exercise in democracy, this election has come with a high price. It is not over by a long shot. And I haven’t even mentioned political correctness!

Locals Get Dressed Up for Spooky Halloween Parade

There were plenty of scary costumes on show at the annual Halloween Fancy Dress Parade at Killarney Outlet Centre last weekend and a few very creative locals walked away with superb prizes for their efforts Rowan Hirrell (Best Dressed Boy), and Féile O’Sullivan (Best Dressed Girl) wheeled away on a Flicker A3 Air Scooters which were kindly sponsored by O’Connors World of Wonder. Rowan’s incredible Groot costume really impressed the judges, as did Féile’s uncanny version of Maleficent. Leah and Emma Reidy and Florence and Réidín O’Meara were worthy winners in the Best Dressed Family caetegory in association with Select Hotels of Ireland. They walked away with a fabulous family break in The Twin Trees Hotel, Co. Mayo. (2 nights B&B and 1 Dinner for 2 Adults & 2 Kids under 12 sponsored by Select Hotels and The Twin Trees Hotel). Best Dressed Adult Shane Scadding collected a Family Pass for Killarney Ghost Tours. All entrants are asked to please donate €1 in support of Killarney Rotary Club’s campaign to End Polio Now. Our panel of judges are looking forward to seeing some more fantastic and unusual costumes this year. As our pictures show, people really went above and beyond with their costumes this year and a fantastic day of spooky entertainment was had by all. Killarney Aiming To Be Ireland’s Leading Accessible Destination Minister Brendan Griffin launched, Killarney Chamber Of Tourism and Commerce’s development strategy to become Ireland’s leading accessible destination to a room full of chamber business members at the Brehon Hotel. The Killarney Chamber President, Paul O’ Neill welcomed everyone, especially the Minister, Failte Ireland and Kerry County Council. In Paul’s address he outlined the plan: “We are trying to create a destination for everyone. As an Industry we have to make sure we give a world class service to all people through the full human life cycle. To do this we must make sure our facilities, products, services and IT are inclusive to all.” He went on to point out where the journey began through chamber member, Paudie Healy, and Universal Access and the work they were doing internationally. They were selected by the European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT) to develop and manage the World Tourism For All interna-

tional pilot and Universal Access selected Ireland and Killarney to run the pilot. “For this project in Killarney, Kerry and Ireland to be a success it is going to take collaboration between all different tourism service providers in the private sector, local and national government and various stakeholders and tonight we are launching a development strategy, a pathway, an intention - this is NOT the finished article. “We are by no means currently a leading accessible destination. Everyone here tonight and the wider business community through all different sectors and the public bodies must be part of the journey. Universal Access will be giving this opportunity to all businesses be part of the ‘Killarney: A Destination For All’ programme over the next number of months. “Capital investment, upgrading and modernising of facilities will develop over time but to begin with it is about showing a desire, knowledge and an openness to help our visitors and their individual needs and that is done through training and awareness”.

Halloween

Ghosts and Ghouls at Halloween Fun Run The now annual Spooky Sprint fundraising event was held in Kilcummin last Sunday to much acclaim. Over 400 people attended on the day and an array of Halloween costumes were on display by young and old alike. The 4.5km route was festooned with spooky ghosts and ghouls, just to remind all that it was, indeed, the Spooky Sprint. “We were delighted with such a big turn out again this year and everyone seemed to enjoy their day,” said Ann Marie O’Leary who was one of the main organisers. Afterwards, everyone was welcomed back to Kilcummin Recreational Hall where a myriad of Halloween games and an array of confectionary items and refreshments were available. And it was eyes down for the hamper raffle with spot prizes and a game of ‘Guess the Number of Spooky Eyes’. Derek O’Leary from the Parents Association of Kilcummin National School said: “A dedicated team of people put a lot of work and effort into organising the day. We want to extend a big thank you to everyone involved and to everyone who supported the day.” The funds raised on the day will be used to support the Ian Joanne and Ava O’Sullivan at the Spooky Sprint in Kilcummin Recreational Hall. LOCAL PROPERTY TAX An annual Local Property Tax (LPT) charged on all residential properties in the state came into effect in 2013. The Local Property Tax is collected by the Revenue Commissioners. If you own a residential property in the state you are liable for payment of the Tax. Residential property has been defined as any building or structure or part of a building which is used as or suitable for use as a dwelling. The Tax payable is based on the market value of relevant properties. The LPT is a self assessment Tax so an individual calculates the Tax due based on their own assessment of the market value of the property. Revenue does not value properties for LPT purposes but does provide guidance and how to value a property. The Revenue Office offers a rang of methods for payment of the Tax. It can be paid in single payment or can be paid in instalments. All owners of residential property including rental properties are liable to pay the Tax. Included in this are persons who have a long term lease of 20 years or more with a life interest or long term right of residence in a residential property, Local Authorities or a person acting as a Personal Representative for a deceased owner i.e. as an Executor/ Administrator of an Estate.

Revenue deems a person to be a liable person if you own a residential property on the liability date. For the year 2013, the liability date was the 1st of May 2013 but from 2014 onwards the liability date is always the 1st of November in the preceding year. Therefor the liability date for 2019 is the 1st of November 2018. Therefore any person who is the owner of the property as of the 1st of November 2018 is liable for the Tax for the year 2019. If you are liable for LPT on the liability date and subsequently sell it at any time before the next liability date, you are the person liable to pay the full LPT for that intervening year. This payment should therefore be made before the sale of the property closes. It is common practice for the Contract for Sale to deal with an apportionment so that the purchaser pays for that part of the Local Property Tax of which they will be in occupation of the property.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Palau bans sunscreen to protect coral reefs Palau is set to become the first country to impose a widespread ban on sunscreen in an effort to protect its vulnerable coral reefs. The government has signed a law that restricts the sale and use of sunscreen and skincare products that contain a list of ten different chemicals. Researchers believe that these ingredients are highly toxic to marine life, and can make coral more susceptible to bleaching. The ban comes into force in 2020. In a statement, Palau’s president Tommy Remengesau said the ban, which would see fines of $1,000 for retailers who violated the law, was timely. “The power to confiscate sunscreens should be enough to deter their non-commercial use, and these provisions walk a smart balance between educating tourists and scaring them away.”

Scientists have been raising concerns about the impacts of sunscreen products on marine life for many years. They are particularly worried over the role of two ingredients called oxybenzone and octinoxate. These are used as sun protection factors in sun creams as they absorb ultraviolet light. However, they are believed to make coral more susceptible to bleaching. Research published in 2015 showed that the oxybenzone could stunt the growth of baby corals and was toxic to several different coral species in laboratory tests.

Trump Corner

New American voters lean away from Trump The newest generation of American voters is more energised to vote in the midterm elections than it has been in previous cycles - but not for President Donald Trump or the Republican Party, a recent poll found. The survey, released Monday by Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics, shows a more politically mobilised crop of young Americans leaning away from Trump and the GOP in the midterms in near-equal proportions, even as the majority party’s core issues - immigration, jobs and the economy - rank among their highest concerns. At the same time, the 18-to-29-year-old respondents are more aligned with some progressive policies, though they have yet to fully embrace the label of “Democratic Socialist” applied to politicians such as Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders or New York Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Critics of the president were quick to

draw dire implications from the poll. Bill Kristol, who founded the conservative political magazine The Weekly Standard and is often lambasted as a “Never Trumper” by the president’s allies, said the GOP needs to “dump Trump” if it wants a future. 40% of Americans under the age of 30 said they will definitely vote in the upcoming elections, according to the study, which gathered responses from more than 2,000 people. That response is higher than polls in the past two midterm elections, The Washington Post reported. Nearly twice as many respondents identified with the Democratic Party over the GOP — 41% to 21%, while 35% said they were unaffiliated or independents. That gap widened significantly when they were asked about Trump’s job as president: 68% of overall respondents said they disapprove of Trump’s performance after nearly two years in office, compared with just 26 % who do approve. It grew wider still among likely voters, with 72 % of that group disapproving of Trump’s job.

Never fails to entertain

Alleged Pittsburgh gunman pleads not guilty Robert Bowers, the alleged gunman accused of killing 11 Jewish worshippers at a Pittsburgh synagogue on Saturday has pleaded not guilty. Mr Bowers, 46, has requested a jury trial. He faces 44 counts of murder, hate crimes, obstructing religious practices and other crimes. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Authorities called the attack on the Tree of Life synagogue the worst anti-Semitic incident in US history. In addition to those killed, six people were injured, including four police officers, before Mr Bowers surrendered to law enforcement. US media reported Mr Bowers entered the courtroom without a wheelchair, bandaged on the arm from the injuries suffered during a shootout with police on Saturday. Mr Bowers confirmed he had read the indictment and understood the charges against him. He reportedly had no reaction when told he faced the death penalty. The federal indict-

ment alleges Mr Bowers walked into the synagogue with multiple firearms, ranted about wanting to “kill Jews” and then began gunning down worshippers, as well as firing on police when they arrived. During his first court appearance, Mr Bowers was in a wheelchair and spoke little. On Wednesday, US prosecutors added a further 15 charges to the 29 Mr Bowers already faces, making a total of 44. The additional counts against Mr Bowers were for assaulting police officers and also included special findings to support the case for pursuing the death penalty, US media reported. According to an affidavit, Mr Bowers told police immediately after his arrest that “he wanted all Jews to die”. Social media accounts purported to be Mr Bowers’ also featured anti-Semitic slurs and anti-immigrant sentiments, including a post saying, “I can’t sit by and watch… Screw your optics, I’m going in,” that was uploaded just before the shooting.

Kanye West to “distance himself” from politics Kanye West says he is “distancing” himself from politics. On Twitter the rapper claims he iss being “used to spread messages I don’t believe in.” West has been a vocal supporter of President Trump but this decision appears to centre around a campaign he was linked to known as Blexit. Run by conservative commentator Candace Owens it encourages black Americans to quit the Democratic party. She claimed the musician had designed clothing for the campaign, something which the rapper has now denied. West tweeted: “My eyes are now wide open. I am distancing myself from politics and completely focusing on being creative.” Now it seems as though Kanye West intends to step away from politics altogether. Writing to his 28.7 million followers the musician said: “I support creating jobs and opportunities for people who need them the most. I support prison reform, I support common-sense gun laws that will make our world safer. I support those who risk their lives to serve and protect us and I support holding people who misuse their power accountable.” It’s not the first time the rapper, who prefers to be referred to as Ye, has had to clear up his political beliefs.

Earlier this year he came under fire for saying that the 13th Amendment of the US Constitution, which brought an end to slavery, should be abolished - a statement that he later clarified. Apparently he meant to write “amend”. And his performance on the American comedy show Saturday Night Live a few weeks ago sparked outrage and amusement in equal measure. The 41-year-old, who is married to Kim Kardashian, wore a hat with Donald Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again” and apparently gave an unscripted, off-air rant in support of the president. The Chicago-born artist has been very up front about his support for President Trump. The pair have met several times, discussing issues including employment and criminal justice reform. Stars including Snoop Dogg, TI and John Legend have criticised West for meeting the US leader.

Google staff walk Dublin man gets 15 years out over sexual for raping Spanish girl harassment leniency

Google staff in Dublin joined thousands of colleagues across the world in staging a workplace walkout in protest at the company’s lenient treatment of executives accused of sexual misconduct. Demonstrations took place at 11.10am local time at the company’s offices around the world. Employees were urged to leave a flyer at their desk which reads: “I’m not at my desk because I’m walking out in solidarity with other Googlers and contractors to protest [against] sexual harassment, misconduct, lack of transparency, and a workplace culture that’s not working for everyone.” The Walkout for Real Change protest comes a week after it emerged that Google gave a $90 million (€79 mil-

lion) severance package to Andy Rubin, the creator of the Android mobile phone software, but concealed details of a sexual misconduct allegation that triggered his departure. Mr Rubin has denied the allegations. In Dublin, a steady stream of staff began leaving Google’s buildings in Barrow Street, gathering beside Google Docks shortly after 11am. A short time later, a couple of hundred stood waiting to hear from organisers. The demonstration was organised in a day. The coordinator in Dublin, whose name was given as Kate, said she had not personally experienced any form of sexual harrassment or misconduct at Google, but she wanted create a space to show support for doing whatever it takes to eliminate such behaviour.

Neil Young confirms marriage to Darryl Hannah Neil Young has confirmed he has married actress Darryl Hannah. The singer refers to the Splash star as his wife in a message released with a live recording of his Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young track Ohio. There had been rumours in August that they had married after blues guitarist Mark Miller posted a message of congratulations online. In the video he told the crowd “everything’s great, just cruising along... writing songs about love.” Young wrote Ohio in 1970 about four protesters who were shot protesting against the Vietnam war at Ohio’s Kent State university. He said he was releasing the live version to support student calls for “common sense gun laws” in the US and urged fans to vote in the Ameri-

can mid-term elections on November 6. In the accompanying message he said: “My wife Daryl and I put this video together to reflect on.” Young divorced his previous wife, singer-songwriter Pegi Young, in 2014 after 36 years of marriage. Hannah directed Young in the Netflix film Paradox, which is her directorial debut. Young also wrote the soundtrack for the film that premiered this year at the South By South West Festival.

A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for what the court described as the “horrific” rapes of a young Spanish girl in Dublin last year. Eoin Berkley pleaded guilty to three counts of rape. He also threatened to kill the then 18-year-old woman and falsely imprisoned her during an ordeal which lasted 21 hours on July 15 and 16 of last year. Mr Justice Michael White said the offences were at the extreme end of the crime of rape which was already a very serious crime. The court heard the young woman was from a small Spanish town and had come to Ireland to learn English. She was described as “innocent and naive” and from a protective family. She met Berkley on the boardwalk at Eden Quay in Dublin on July 15. He offered to show her the beach, but instead took her to some tents at a derelict site at the Irish Glass Bottle Factory land in Dublin 4. Over 21 hours, he raped her on three separate occasions, threatened to cut off her hands, gave her tablets and

strangled her on several occasions. He said he had already killed six people and she would be the seventh. The woman eventually managed to escape and rang her father in Spain as she fled. She found help at a nearby house. Mr Justice White said Berkley’s behaviour changed as soon as he got the young woman to the tents. The first incident of rape involved 19 instances of violence or threats of violence. He told her that shouting for help would make him more motivated and if she ran he said he would hit her on the head with a rock. The judge said that after this rape, she was so terrorised that she effectively became a prisoner for 21 hours. He said she showed compassion to others as she was afraid to ask for help from anyone as she thought she might put strangers in a position of danger. He said all three instances of rape were accompanied by quite extreme degradation. The judge said the conclusion he had come to was that the offences involved premeditation and planning.

Japanese pilot arrested at Heathrow for being drunk A Japanese pilot who was arrested at Heathrow Airport for being drunk has admitted being more than nine times the legal alcohol limit. Katsutoshi Jitsukawa, 42, who works for Japan Airlines, was arrested on 28 October after failing a breath test. He was found to have 189mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood in his system - the legal limit for a pilot is 20mg. The first officer pleaded guilty to exceeding the alcohol limit at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that police were alerted by the driver of a crew bus who smelled alcohol on the pilot. He

had been due to be part of a crew flying a Japan Airlines (JAL) flight JL44 to Tokyo but failed a breath test 50 minutes before the departure time. The Boeing 777 aircraft took off after a 69-minute delay. JAL issued an apology and pledged to “implement immediate actions to prevent any future occurrence”, adding that “safety remains our utmost priority”. The drink-drive limit in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 80mg, compared to 20mg for pilots. Jitsukawa was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court on 29 November.

Colette & Barry Tie The Knot In Killarney

Wedding of the Week Congratulations to Colette McCullagh and Barry McGinley who were recently married at St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney. The newlyweds celebrated afterwards with family and friends in The Brehon where a spectacular evening of craic was had by all. Colette and Barry, who hail from Tyrone, decided to tie the knot in Killarney so as to give their guests a nice weekend away. “Every time myself and Barry visited Kerry we have loved it each time,” Colette explains. Colette’s best friend Josephine McDonagh was maid of honour and Josephine’s daughter was one of the flower girls (she is also Colette’s goddaughter). The bride’s two older sisters, Rita Lewtas and Una McSorley, were bridesmaids. Una’s son Cillian was also a pageboy. “Rita flew from Tasmania to make my wedding in July,” Colette says. “She also totally shocked and surprised me at my hen by flying home for that too. My other bridesmaid was Sonya McTeague, a school friend who flew home from Geneva. Finally, but by no means least, I had my brother Ciarán’s wee girl Jude as another flower girl.” Barry’s youngest brother Paul was best man his other brothers, Raymond, Micheál and Kieran were groomsmen. There were around 130 guests in total, most of whom travelled from Northern Ireland, with a mix of family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues. The happy couple were quick to thank their priest Kevin Mulhern for coming down and making the wedding ceremony so special. They also expressed their gratitude to family and friends who travelled from near and far. “The hotel were a pleasure to work with and so accommodating,” Colette added. “And each and every vendor we dealt with was great. Not being down in Kerry that often makes it stand out how good everyone was in helping us plan and execute our day, allowing myself and Barry to sit back and enjoy ourselves! Colette and Barry had mini-moons in Castlemartyr and Druid’s Glen and in August they went on an Eastern Mediterranean cruise. They then moved on to Corfu for another week of relaxation.

A Past Hero Remembered, Today’s Heroes Celebrated

Brendan Coffey (Kerry Mountain Rescue Team) on a special Winter Training exercise on Cnoc Toinne. Pic: Valerie O’Sullivan.

At the end of this month 55 years ago, at the relatively young age of 65, Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty – The Vatican Pimpernel - passed away peacefully at his sister Bríd’s home in Cahersiveen. In many places around the world, his passing was mourned and noted by such iconic journals as The New York Times. Remarkably, the national media and indeed political establishment in Ireland did not mark his passing in any notable way. 75 years ago, in Nazi occupied Rome, on the steps of St Peter’s under the Arco delle Campane (The Arch of the Bells), Monsignor Hugh met POW escapee Lt Col Sam Derry, and so began the short but dramatic story of the Rome Escape Line. Together and with the help of many other brave people like Henrietta Chevalier, John May and Delia Murphy (famous Irish singer and wife of the Dr TJ Kiernan, Irish Ambassador to the Holy See), they ensured the safety of over 6,000 people until Rome was liberated less than eight months later in June 1944. On that day – as incredible as it may seem the Rome Escape Line was still successfully hiding

almost 4,000 POWs throughout Rome, under the noses of the Gestapo. On the evening of Saturday November 3 at 8pm, in the beautifully restored Killarney House, as part of the 11th Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Weekend, we will be remembering Monsignor Hugh and, in his name, celebrating the bravery and humanitarianism of modern-day heroes represented by the Irish Coast Guard, Kerry Mountain Rescue and the RNLI. The original nomination read: “Be it windswept high mountains, dangerous shorelines or stormy seas, when called upon, at a moment’s notice and without regard for the race or creed of those in need, they put their lives on the line to help others. Over the years, members of these rescue organisations have lost their lives while attempting to save others.” The Mayor of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr John Sheahan, will present them with Humanitarian Award Citation Scrolls on behalf of the people of Killarney. From representatives of the O’Flaherty Family and Memorial Society they will receive the Hugh O’Flaherty Humanitarian Medal and, as with last

year, the schools of Killarney parish have come together to generate a schools bursary for the award recipients. The Award Ceremony will commence with the official launch of a new novel for young readers titled “Leo’s War”. Based on Monsignor Hugh’s wartime activities, its author Patricia Murphy has written and published several historically based children’s novels, including the best-selling 1916 novel “Molly’s Diary”. Patricia will talk about the importance of getting children to “buy-in” to history through reading historically based works of fiction. The Award Ceremony is open to the public and admission is free but seating will be limited so early arrival is advised. The Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society gratefully acknowledges the support it receives from Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and from the Community Support Fund of Kerry County Council.

Storied Kerry Celebrates The Art Of Storytelling St Oliver’s National School was the venue last Saturday when a number of esteemed guests gathered at Storied Kerry, a unique celebration of storytelling. Keynote speakers Professor Joseph Sobol, Dr David Hopes, Dr Richard McElligott and Professor Criostoir MacCarthaigh highlighted the depth and scope of story and its many applications, while a number of enlightening workshops gave attendees plenty of food for thought. Delegates from each of the Kerry districts also met to discuss how they could support independent initiatives in their district and ways they might usefully work together. “The board of Storied Kerry is drawn from all of the eight Kerry districts,” founder and chairman Frank Lewis explains. “We are all people involved in Kerry Story. Together we will be a catalyst for further development; we will stimulate programmes of information, training, education and publicity; we will open up channels to funding; and we will help get Kerry story the status it deserves.” For more information, search ‘Storied Kerry’ on Facebook and YouTube.

Tesla Model S Gets Attitude The world’s biggest aftermarket car show, SEMA in the US, has something for everyone – even EV-loving street racers – as a company specialising in Tesla mods has shown. Unplugged Performance showed off the S-APEX series, an upgrade package for the Tesla Model S P100D transforming the look and feel of the EV from luxury cruiser to midnight prowler. The

most visible change to the tough-looking Tesla Model S is the adoption of a wide-body kit, which is fashioned from carbon-fibre. The Tesla P100D can accelerate from 0-100km/h in a claimed 2.7 secs thanks to its dual motor, all-wheel drive setup but unlike internal combustion engines aftermarket companies are less inclined to fiddle with the software that controls power delivery.

BMW Debuts X7 SUV Flagship rpri

BMW has confirmed details for its new SUV flagship. The BMW X7 is a threerow luxury soft and offroader that is based heavily on the recently-launched new generation X5. The largest double-kidney grille to yet grace a BMW is at the none-too pointy end, while at the rear there’s just enough differentiation to say ‘not an X5’. BMW says no panels are shared and there are small differences in height and width. But the main mechanical difference between the BMW X7 and the new X5 is a substantial wheelbase stretch. At 3105mm, the new X7’s wheelbase is 130mm longer than the new X5’s 2975. To put this into perspective, just 15mm shy of the long-wheelbase version of the latest Range Rover. Compared to the X5 there will also be significant boosts in standard equipment. All X7s will be all-wheel-drive seven and will come with BMW’s air-sprung adaptive suspension and active roll stabilisation. That third row is complete with armrests, cup-holders, USB ports and all seats are electrically adjustable. Kicking off the local line-up will likely be a 30d variant featuring a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel rated at 195kW and 620Nm. The biggest hitting X7 (for the time being) will feature BMW’s quad-turbo (that’s right, four!) 3.0-litre 50d turbo-diesel generates that pumps out 294kW and 760Nm. Both engines are matched to eight-speed automatic gearboxes. Extensive personalisation options will be also offered including a Design Pure Excellence equipment line, M Sport package and the BMW Individual program.

Porsche Boxster and Cayman sports cars could evolve into full battery-electric cars in their next generations, a senior Porsche executive suggested last week. Speaking at a technical presentation for the all-new BEV Taycan, Porsche’s board member for Finance and IT, Lutz Meschke, hinted that the Macan SUV could also be one of Porsche’s Taycan follow-ups into the EV world. Astonishingly, that all means that the classic 911 sports car is the only current Porsche model guaranteed not to be turned into a full battery-electric vehicle within the next product cycle.

Garden Magic

Words: Debby Looney

November Is The Month Of Tidying, Clearing & Cutting Most shrubs and trees are entering their dormant stage now. Unfortunately, gardening itself knows no dormant stage! November is the month of tidying, clearing, cutting, raking, sweeping… tired yet?! One of the most important jobs before “real” winter is upon us is pruning. Many of us live in exposed areas, and winter gales can really take their toll on plants. Excessive rocking in water-sodden ground not only causes plants to break, but it can also cause the ever-growing hole in the ground to fill with water and cause the roots to rot. Staking is an obvious solution, especially in the case of trees. The use of two stakes is ideal in very windy sites, and in some cases putting the stakes at an angle against the prevailing winds can be necessary. It is generally accepted that staking one third up the height of the main trunk of a tree is sufficient, rather than trying to stake the entire length of it. The second solution to wind damage is pruning. The less top heavy a tree is, or the less straggly a shrub is, the less likely it is to catch the full force of the wind. Many people are quite

daunted by the prospect of cutting into their prize plants. It is an understandable fear; plants, and especially trees, can cost a lot. Not only that, but perhaps you have tried and failed to grow so many things, and finally - finally! – something is growing in your garden, and now the time has come to cut it, and maybe kill it… Fear not. Try always to cut an inch or two above an outward facing healthy bud, slanting away from the bud, so that water is directed away from that bud, preventing rotting. Most plants can be cut back by one third their size, or, if they are very overgrown, half is generally safe. If you are worried about taking too much off, do so in increments. Either take one third of the overall height off this year, and again next year, or, alternatively, prune one third of the stems back hard, and another one third next year, and so on.

Debby is available for garden consultations and advice. Just call 086 6088156, or email barnhillky@ gmail.com.

MCLOUGHLIN

In loving memory of Hannah Mary Looney, Calfmount, Headford, Killarney Who died on 7th November 2012. Don’t remember me with sadness, Don’t remember me with tears, Remember all the laughter, We’ve had throughout the years. Then when the summer sunshine, Awakes the flowers in bloom, I’ll walk that light from heaven, Around the corner of the room. Do the things we did before, The same in every way, Just whisper a little prayer to me, At the dawn of every day. Just think of me at present, Don’t think of me as past, For a mother’s love is a blessing, In death it still will last. Forget your troubles and your worries, They are mine forevermore, I’ll watch and care and love you, From heaven’s open door. And when the road gets rough and rocky, Or you’re down and need a crutch, Remember I’m right beside you, Just an inch too short to touch. Sadly missed by your husband Dan and all the family. Hannah Mary’s 6th Anniversary Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday 7th November at 7.30p.m. in Barradubh Church.

In loving memory of Conor Spellman, late of Ballycasheen Road, Killarney who died on the 5th November 2011.

As the memory returns of that cold dry evening in November, When you left us without saying goodbye, It’s a memory we will always remember, A memory that is so hard to take, With just one thought our hearts will break, With far more tears than years have passed, We’ve had every type of emotion amassed, We long to see that smile or golden hair, But for now we’re happy with the signs you leave us so we know you still care.

No words we write can ever say, How much we miss you every day, No one knows the grief we bear, When the family gathers and you’re not there.

Anthony O’Sullivan Ballinamanagh, Kilcummin Died November 5th 2017

Loving memories of a wonderful son, Anthony, Ballinamanagh, Kilcummin., Who died in Sydney on November 5th 2017.

In loving memory of Anthony O’Sullivan Ballinamanagh, Kilcummin, who passed away on 5th November 2017.

On the occasion of Anthony’s first anniversary, his father Paddy, brothers Brendan, Patrick, Killian, Stephen, Darragh and Enda, sister-in-law Kate, nephew Myles, grandmother Joan, Paddy’s partner Kate, aunts, uncles and many cousins would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all those who sympathised with us on our very sad loss. We acknowledge in a special way the quick response and work of the paramedics who attended to Anthony on the evening of his accident and who worked so hard to save him. Thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick, Sydney for their kindness and care for Anthony and the hospitality shown to his brothers and friends. Words are inadequate to express the love, concern and help we received from the Irish community in Australia. Many travelled from Darwin, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth to be with Anthony in his final hours and to support Patrick, Killian and their girlfriends Christiana and Thomasina. It is indeed a great consolation to us to know that Anthony was not alone during that time and also that he had such loyal and true friends in Australia who held him in such high regard. To our wonderful neighbours and friends in the Kilcummin community who rallied to our support we owe a huge debt of gratitude. To those who worked so hard preparing the house for Anthony’s wake, to those who organised lighting, parking and stewarding during the funeral, you will be forever in our prayers. A sincere thank you to all those who kept a constant flow of food to the house and to the men and women who worked so hard with refreshments on the evening of the wake. A special word of thanks to the amazing ladies’ committee of Kilcummin GAA who were there throughout the days of waiting to bring Anthony home and all during the funeral. Your help and support were beyond words during those very difficult days. We wish to acknowledge in a special way the amazing fundraiser set up to help bring Anthony home. Spearheaded by his great lifelong friend, Daniel O’Leary, it went beyond all expectations and demonstrated the generosity and kindness of people. We were delighted to donate this fund to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust and wish to thank them for the help, advice and support in the repatriation of Anthony’s remains. We were honoured to have Colin Bell, and his wife Eithne, in Kilcummin on December 29th to accept the cheque and to express our gratitude to them. A sincere thank you to the huge number of people who attended the wake and funeral. A special word of thanks to those who travelled long distances, most especially from America, Australia, England and other European countries. Thanks to all those who sent mass cards, flowers and messages of sympathy. To our parish priest Fr Eamon for facilitating the mass, and to the celebrant Fr Kieran O’Brien for making the ceremony so special, míle buíochas. We also thank the many priests who concelebrated the mass and to Siobhan McSweeney for all her help. Fr. Joe Begley called to the house twice in the days leading up to the funeral and did a beautiful prayer service. Being one of Anthony’s teachers in St. Brendan’s, this was very special. The beautiful music by Denis Crowley, Helen Kerins, Marina Cassidy and Oliver Cremin made for a very emotional and beautiful occasion. The staff of Anabla school have always been a rock of support and for this we are eternally grateful. The guards of honour from the various schools and Kilcummin GAA were deeply appreciated. Thanks to the piper Mike Millner who lead the way to the graveyard. A huge thank you to Anthony’s great friend, Brian Cahill, for organising the rota of friends to shoulder his coffin to the graveside. It would have meant so much to him and he surely would have some smart comment to make. Thanks to Kevin O’Sullivan and Neilly from O’Sullivan Sound for setting up the system in the graveyard. To Mike and Mary O’Shea from the funeral home, thank you for your professionalism and kindness. Thanks especially to Gerry Fitzgerald who travelled to Dublin airport to bring Anthony home. His help and advice were invaluable. Thanks to Liam Regan and Sean Buckley for bringing the doves to the graveside. Anthony spent many happy days working with the Buckley family in Coolwood. To Batt Healy and his team of helpers for the wonderful hot food they provided in the Klub for a large number of people after the burial. To John and the staff of the Klub bar a huge thank you. This past difficult year has been greatly helped by the incredible support and kindness of family, neighbours and many friends. Anthony loved life, music and the world of nature. He lived it to the full. He is forever loved and missed. Please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest gratitude. First anniversary mass will be in Kilcummin on Sunday, November 4th at 11:15am.

In loving memory of Anthony O’Sullivan Who died in Sydney Australia on 5th November 2017 It only takes a little space to write how much we miss you, but it will take a lifetime to forget the day we lost you.

Sadly missed and fondly remembered by Uncle Andrew & Family

Treasured memories of our dearest brother, late of Ballinamanagh Kilcummin, who died on the 5th of November 2017. RIP. Day is done, gone the sun, From the hills and from the sky. All is well, safely rest, Safely rest, all is well. Fading light dims the sight, And a star gems the sky. Gleaming bright from afar, Drawing nigh, falls the night. Dear one, rest! Always loved and remembered by brothers Stephen, Darragh and Enda.

Something will remind me, I never knew just when, It might be something someone says, And it all comes back again. The times we spent together, The happiness, the fun, Once again I feel the pain, Of life without my son. It’s said that time’s a healer, I’m not sure this is true, There’s not a day goes by son, That I don’t cry for you. Forever loved and greatly missed by father Paddy and brothers Brendan, Patrick, Killian, Stephen, Darragh and Enda. Anniversary Mass in Kilcummin on November 4th at 11:15am.

Those special memories of you will always bring a smile, If only I could have you back for just a little while. Then we could sit and talk again just like we used to do, You always meant so very much and always will do too. The fact that you’re no longer here will always cause me pain, But you’re forever in my heart until we meet again. So very loved and missed from Brendan, Kate & Myles.

Crokes Cement Status As Best Team Ever Words: Adam Moynihan

Sunday’s victory was historic in more ways than one for Dr Crokes. Colm Cooper and Eoin Brosnan became the most decorated Kerry club players of all time by securing their eighth county championships. Crokes also cinched their 13th senior crown, making them the most successful club in the history of Kerry’s showpiece competition. And, perhaps most notably, this particular Crokes team have now won seven of the past nine county titles. We are looking at the best Kerry club team of all time. There can be no more doubts about that. This period of ruthless domination is unprecedented in the history of football in the Kingdom. The great John Mitchels team of late 50s/early 60s are the only team to come close. They won six championships in an eight-year spell, including five in a row between 1959 and 1963. Crokes have already lifted the Bishop Moynihan Cup seven times this decade, and there’s still another year to go. Pat O’Shea’s side will be favourites again in 2019 and not many people would back against them winning another four-in-a-row in twelve months’ time. I suppose it’s tough for the rest of us to be watching on from the outside but realistically you can’t but admire this group of players. There’s a great photo there of the seven winning captains and I know most of them well. Myself, Smiler, Payno, Leary and Brian Looney were on the same Killarney Athletic team underage and we would have played a good bit of schools soccer and football together in the Sem. They’re four very different players but one thing they all had in common from an early age was their attitude. They each had a huge desire to win and they were as committed and as professional as any players I’ve ever played with. A lot of young fellas get side-tracked from sport when they leave school (for a while at least) but that quartet have stuck at it from Day 1. They’ve barely missed a championship game between them and their consistency over the past 13 years or so has been remarkable. They now have seven Kerry SFC titles each. Crokes only had six in the 120-year period before they started playing senior football. Luke Quinn and Shane Doolan now have seven apiece as well, as do Fionn Fitzgerald, Buddy O’Leary, Johnny Buckley and Daithí Casey. Only six clubs/divisional teams have won that many championships in their history. Some might say that this Crokes dynasty is bad for Kerry football and they have a point; no neutral wants to see the same team winning year after year after year. But that’s not Crokes’ problem. They’re setting the standard at the moment and it’s up to everyone else to match that standard. If they can’t match it, Crokes will continue to dominate. It’s that simple. It will be interesting to see how much the starting fifteen changes between now and next year’s championship. There are some young guys like Jordan Kiely, Billy Courtney and Michael Potts who will have to start eventually (you would imagine), and a lot of those guys who have won seven championships will be 32/33. Gooch and Eoin Brosnan are older again. Although maybe I’m thinking too far ahead. The club championship will be the focus for now and Crokes will be hoping to go deep in that. They are currently 3/1 (second favourites) to go all the way and win their second All-Ireland title in three years. Reigning champions Corofin, who drew 0-7 all with Mountbellew/Moylough in last weekend’s Galway final, are 7/4 favourites to retain their crown.

Casey, White & Shaw Shine As Crokes Seal Famous Win Dr Crokes are kingpins of football in Kerry once more after their 1-15 to 0-12 win over Dingle in Tralee on Sunday last. The scoreline flatters Crokes who led by just two points as the match clock ticked up to the hour. They finished with a flurry in time added on. It was an historic win for Crokes as they won the three-in-a-row for the third time. They won the Kerry three-in-a-row in 1912 to 1914 and 2010 to 2013. They have won the title seven times in the current decade. In the role of honour they go to the top with 13 titles. Laune Rangers and Austin Stacks come next on 12. It was also special for Eoin Brosnan and Colm Cooper who lead the way by winning eight Kerry SFC titles. They were there in 2000 and shared in all the victories since that win over the Gaeltacht. It was only fitting that these great players and loyal servants got some game time on Sunday last. There was some speculation before the game that Mark O’Connor would line out at midfield with Dingle but he couldn’t as he is bound by contract to his Australian club. Dingle were first to score a point in the opening minute but Crokes settled quickly to score eight points in the first half. Chief scorer was the elegant David Shaw who scored some miraculous points from difficult angles. He finished with a total of four points, all from play. It was a magnificent contribution from this young and talented player. He impressed the Kerry selectors in attendance at the game as they are looking out for new talent to build a team for Kerry after all the retirals. It was an interesting game to watch the various match-ups. Much attention was focused on Paul Geaney at full forward. He has been in devastating form in these championships so it was a big ask for Michael Moloney to mark him and to prevent the goal-scoring Dingle sharp-shooter from finding the net. Smiler did a great job on Geaney, confining him to just a single point from play. Geaney did score five points from frees but he also had some wides. He

missed a vital one near the finish when Dingle were just two points in arrears. If he had scored that there would have only been a point between them and who knows, maybe a draw was on the cards. Instead momentum swept to the Crokes who got the match-winning goal, which was finished by Gavin White in time added on. After conceding all those points to the rampant Crokes in the opening half, Dingle got into the game and were only two points behind at half time. There was a great battle at midfield where Daithí Casey, my choice for most valuable player for Dr Crokes over the hour, played a blinder in general play, kicked a nice point and was deadly from frees to keep Crokes ahead. I felt that whichever side scored a goal would win the match. It was that close. Dingle certainly needed a goal and they came very close two minutes into the second half when Shane Murphy made a splendid save from Paul Geaney’s goal-bound shot. He also made another great save to deny Dingle. In the final minutes, Dingle lobbed several balls into the Crokes goalmouth but there was no way through. A goal would have put Dingle ahead but the much-maligned Crokes defence was magnificent. Crokes swept down-field and Kieran O’Leary unselfishly parted to Gavin White to score the match-winning goal. That put daylight between the sides and once that went in there was no way that Crokes were going to concede a goal. One must remember that Pádraig Ó Conchúir, the Dingle captain, was sent off for a second yellow and a foul on Kieran O’Leary .There were still 10 minutes left in the game and just those tantalising two points keeping Dr Crokes in front. Referee Séamus Mulvihill did a good job overall. He was very strict on the tackling and he applied the rules consistently so there was never a danger that the game would spill over, as happened to Dingle in the semi-final replay. In my estimation there were three Crokes players in contention for Man of the Match. Daithí Casey was magnificent throughout and Barra Ó Suilleabháin was kept well in check as Casey won the midfield bat-

tle for supremacy. David Shaw was in great form and Gavin White did well throughout on Mikey Geaney, popping up for the match-sealing goal in the dying minutes of the game. He also worked his way through for a point. Fionn Fitzgerald was on the ball more than any other player and reveled in his role as a loose man with defensive and offensive ball carrying duties. All of the Crokes played well and there wasn’t a weak link on the team. The match journalists picked Gavin White as Man of the Match. My choice was Daithí Casey. The newly crowned champions get no respite. On Sunday next they are away to Tipperary champions Moyle Rovers in the first round of the Munster Club championship and if they win that they will host Cork champions St Finbarr’s in the Munster semi-final at Lewis Road. The Barrs got through in Cork after losing eight finals from 1986 to 2017. They are managed by Ray Keane, brother of the new Kerry boss Peter Keane. When Crokes finish with Munster duties they still have O’Donoghue Cup first round game against Fossa. Best of luck to Kilcummin who travel to Kilrush this weekend for their Munster Intermediate Championship game. Attendance at county finals: Kerry – 6,028, Cork 6,511. I felt that €20 admission to the Kerry final was too dear. 15 would have been enough. Scoring stats: Crokes scored 10 goals and 117 points in the championship, Dingle scored 14-89. Dingle centre back Tom O’Sullivan scored 1-17, Paul Geaney 9-18 and Tony Brosnan 1-31. Team of the Championship as chosen by Radio Kerry’s Terrace Talk: Shane Murphy, John Payne, Michael Moloney, Tom Leo O’Sullivan, Gavin White, Jack Sherwood, Tom O’Sullivan, David Moran, Johnny Buckley, Micheál Burns, Mikey Geaney, Daithí Casey, David Clifford, Paul Geaney and Tony Brosnan. Tom O’Sullivan was chosen as Player of the Championship

26.10.18 President’s Cup (Round 1)

Dublin Lions 78 | Scotts Lakers 92

Lakers Tame Lions In President’s Cup Opener Words: Eamonn Keogh

It was a perfect start in the President’s National Cup for Scotts Lakers when they toppled a fancied Dublin Lions side at Coláiste Bríde, Clondalkin last Saturday night. Overcoming this obstacle away from home was a huge boost to the Killarney side and they have also been rewarded with a home quarter-final draw against Limerick Celtics scheduled for early December. Team captain Mark Greene led the way for Scotts Lakers in the opening minutes, hitting the opening nine points for his side. Seán O’Brien, Dailian Mason and Séamus Brosnan were also impressive as the Killarney men stamped their authority from an early stage and led 30-21 at the end of the first quarter. They maintained that advantage throughout the second quarter and with O’Brien contributing 17 first half points, along with 11 from Greene, and the Lakers enjoyed a 48-37 advantage at half-time. Surprisingly, Papito Hersisia had a quiet opening half scoring three points but he made his presence felt early in the third quarter with a big baseline jumper followed by two three-pointers. Dublin Lions battled hard with Garrett Collins and Muhammad Sabic leading the way but Scotts Lakers led 69-60 entering the final quarter. The Killarney side continued to dominate with big

Pádraig Lucey making a huge impression as the game progressed. Great defence and rebounding from Seán O’Brien, Andrew Fitzgerald, Shane McCarthy and Pádraig Lucey meant that Dublin Lions struggled to make any serious threat. With Papito Hersisia scoring with ease, the Lakers had opened up a 90-69 lead with 2:12 remaining. There was no way back for the home side after this and with Hersisia contributing 22 second half points, Scotts Lakers enjoyed a comfortable 14-point win in the end. Accurate three-point shooting was another significant factor in the victory with the Lakers hitting 14 in total. Seán O’Brien sank five threes while Papito Hersisia added three more.

Scotts Lakers:

Seán O’Brien (27), Papito Hersisia (25), Mark Greene (11),Dailian Mason (9), Seamus Brosnan (7), Pádraig Lucey (6), Shane McCarthy (6), Justin Tuason (1), Andrew Fitzgerald, Cian Clernon.

Dublin Lions:

Garrett Collins (16), Muhammad Sabic (15) and Tomasz Swiatowy (10).

Home Game On Sunday Scotts Lakers return to Killarney Sports Centre this Sunday, November 4 with a home game against Limerick IT at 3pm. The sides clashed in the opening game of the season in early September with Lakers winning 6760 in a low-scoring encounter. LIT’s American Matt Scamaffo only managed nine points in this match but he seems to have discovered his scoring touch since and actually scored a whopping 53 points last weekend. He will take some watching while LIT also have quality players in Krystian Burchardt, Egidijus Baksys, Deividas Venckunas and Andrew Curiel. Scotts Lakers Coach Cormac O’Donoghue and his squad will be on a high and in confident form after last weekend’s great cup win while they have a 6-2 winning record in the league so far. The Lakers will also be at home in Killarney Sports Centre the following Saturday, November 10 against Waterford Vikings at 7.30pm.

Celts Beat Title Rivals As Blues Drop Points In Tralee

Holders Killarney Celtic continued their fine run of form last Friday night with an impressive 2-0 victory over Dingle Bay Rovers. Danny Roche and Cathal O’Shea found the scoresheet for the hosts, who now find themselves three points clear at the summit of the Premier A. The Celts have a perfect record since their opening day draw with Castleisland and are looking strong again this season. Killarney Athletic, meanwhile, had to make do with a draw in their clash with Tralee Dynamos in Cahermoneen. Midfielder Darren Mulcahy was Athletic’s goalscorer on the day as Dynamos held on for a 1-1 draw. It has been a mixed start so far for the Blues but they will take heart from their home record to date; Stuart Templeman’s side secured hard-earned wins against Listowel and Castleisland in their two home games to date. Athletic are currently joint second with Castleisland, three points behind leaders Celtic. Brian Spillane’s charges are in Munster Champions League Trophy action tomorrow (Saturday) as they host Brideview United at 6pm. Brideview, who operate in the West Waterford/East Cork Junior League, had a comfortable enough day in the last round as they defeated UCC United 11-0. There are no Premier A fixtures this weekend. Sunday is an FAI National Closed Day.

Munster Snatch Win With 55M Penalty Words: Liam Murphy Last weekend the PRO14 took centre stage from the Heineken Cup. Munster hosted Glasgow Warriors still smarting from a 25-10 defeat to the same team at Scotstoun in early September. Johan Van Graan started a very strong starting fifteen, searching for revenge and also giving some players a good run out ahead of the international series that is coming up over the next few weeks. There has been pretty bad blood between these two sides of late and it didn’t take long for tempers to fray as Munster captain Peter O’Mahony tussled with Warriors winger Rory Hughes after only 70 seconds. In defence of the Cork man, he tends to get stuck in and leave everything on the pitch but he came in for some criticism following the match for his temperament. We really need to see O’Mahony lead by example and learn to curb his temper a little better. James Cronin crossed for the opening try for the home side, which saw Rory Scannel, JJ Hanrahan and Keith Earls combine to earn a penalty for a Glasgow offside. Munster opted for the corner and Cronin crossed for the try with JJ converting. Glasgow responded with Peter Horne crossing twice for two tries to give the visitors a 7-12 half-time lead. The second half started with a silly yellow card for Chris Cloete for a late tackle allowing Glasgow to score another try. JJ kicked a penalty to keep the home side in the match before Glasgow scored their fourth try and it looked like another defeat for Munster. However, Ian Keatley had other ideas and added a bit of spark when he came on, replacing JJ who had an excellent match it has to be said. Alex Wootton and Alby Mathewson crossed for the home side to keep Munster in the game with Keatley converting to leave the score 22-24 for the visitors. The crowd could be heard for miles in Limerick as the 16th man got behind their team to drive them on in the final minutes. Glasgow gave away a penalty in their own half with the clock almost up, 55 metres out from the posts. This would have been a tough kick for the great Ronan O’Gara in his day but up stepped Rory Scannell to kick the penalty. It is truly worth watching this kick on YouTube if you haven’t seen it but it was a wonderful effort to steal the win. Scannell was rightly mobbed by his teammates and the celebrations kicked off. Munster earned the win, another miracle match of sorts and a kick that will go down in Munster folklore. Next weekend Munster are in South Africa to take on the Cheetahs as Ireland take on Italy in Soldier Field in Chicago.

Lewis Hamilton Wins 5th World Title

Lewis Hamilton was crowned Formula One world champion for the fifth time last Sunday after finishing in fourth place at the Mexico Grand Prix. Max Verstappen won a dramatic race for Red Bull, ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in second and teammate Kimi Raikkonen in third. The win sees Hamilton draw level with Juan Manuel Fangio, and he is now only two behind Michael Schumacher’s record of seven title wins. Hamilton only needed to finish in seventh to claim the title and he got off to a great start. The Mercedes driver surged from his starting position of third on the grid into second ahead of pole-sitter Daniel Ricciardo. Verstappen also enjoyed a strong start to move into first place, where he began to edge away from Hamilton and Ricciardo. Raikkonen struggled on his worn tyres and had a close encounter with Hamilton, as the Mercedes driver went past him. Hamilton: “Something is definitely not right when I’ve got fresh tyres and I can’t match their times” Vettel was having no such issues and went past Ricciardo and then Hamilton to take second place. Ricciardo also caught up with Hamilton and the pressure from the Australian told, as the Englishman locked up his front left tyre and was forced to the grass on Lap 48. Meanwhile, there was more disappointment to follow for Ricciardo as his engine let go with 10 laps to go. Teammate Verstappen encountered no such problems, as he went on to take a dominant win ahead of the two Ferraris, but the day belonged to five-time world champion Hamilton. V

Loeb Takes Dramatic Win As Ogier Grabs WRC Points Lead Sebastien Loeb claimed an incredible first World Rally Championship win since 2013 on an unpredictable Rally Spain, as Sebastien Ogier moved into the lead of the title race. The nine-time WRC champion carried a 7.1s advantage over Ogier into the final two stages but suffered issues on both taking the result down to the wire. Loeb, making his last planned appearance for Citroen of the season, was only 3.6s ahead going into the powerstage. Ogier enjoyed a smooth run but Loeb held on to win the event by 2.9s - his ninth Rally Spain triumph, six years after his last. It also meant that Citroen scored back-to-back wins on the event, following on from Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle’s victory last season. Pre-event points leader Thierry Neuville enjoyed a pace resurgence during the final day, but in the closing section of the last stage he suffered a rear-right broken. Ahead of the Australia season finale, Ogier now leads Neuville by three points on 204. A further 20 points behind is Toyota’s Ott Tanak who had looked odds on for the rally win until a Saturday puncture cost him his half-minute lead. But he set the fastest time on the powerstage to score five points and his teammate Jari-Matti Latvala deliberately slowed, boosting Tanak to sixth overall keeping the Estonian’s slender title hopes alive.

Killarney Golf Men’s

Last weekend saw a return of the John C Copper memorial championship to a two-day event. Frost had threatened to cancel the double shotgun on Sunday, so newly appointed Captain James Curran took the decision to revert to a single fourball shotgun at 10.30am. The cold morning gave way to beautiful sunny conditions, which highlighted the quality condition of the Killeen course. Special thanks must be given to Enda Murphy and his course staff as the course and especially the greens were in perfect condition. The course was set up hard but fair and that was reflected in the modest scoring apart from a superb nett 70 by Ger Hogan who lead proceedings after round one. The second round was played on bank holiday Monday on the Mahony’s Point course. The top 20 players from Sunday went out in five fourballs. Conditions were treacherous with a hard crosswind paired with cold rain. In spite of this the scoring was low, with Con Healy prevailing with a final round of 68. 1st Con Healy - 140 (72, 68), 2nd Greg Lanigan - 142 (73, 69), 3rd Michael Maher - 142 (72, 70), 4th Fergal O’Shea - 143 (74. 69), 5th David O’Callaghan - 143 (74, 69), 6th Eoin O’ Donoghue - 143 (72, 71), 7th Pat Kelliher - 144 (74, 70), 8th Ian Spillane - 144 (74, 70), 9th Mike Casy - 144 (73, 71), 10th David Moloney (73, 71). Please note the men’s committee will be releasing a communication for a new policy of alternative scheduling in the event of frost.

Dr Crokes GAA

RESULT: Senior County Championship Final played in Austin Stack Park, Dr Crokes 1-15 Dingle 0-12. Even though we won this game in the end by six points we had some anxious moments in the second half. We were always at least two points clear in this second thirty minutes but some great defending and an outstanding save at the start of the third quarter by our goalkeeper Shane Murphy kept us in that position until we pulled away in the last ten minutes. A big contribution to the win came from our bench who responded once again when called upon. All first three scores in the game came from frees in the first five minutes, Dingle scoring two points to our one. At this stage we went into overdrive and sent over seven points without reply. Five of these came from David Shaw and Tony Brosnan from long range and off play. Those at the game who felt that the match was over as a contest at this stage got this assumption wrong as our opponents hit back with four unanswered points to leave us just two points ahead at half time, 0-8 to 0-6. Our Management would have been disappointed that we failed to score in the last ten minutes of this half. The teams exchanged points on two occasions in the first ten minutes of the second half but then we scored two points without reply for a lead of 0-13 to 0-9 at the end of the third quarter. Two points by Dingle in the next five minutes left us just two points clear with ten minutes to go. We got well on top in these minutes thanks in no small way to the contribution of our subs. We were also helped by the fact that our opponents played this last ten minutes with fourteen men. We outscored Dingle 1-2 to 0-1 in this period. The goal was an outstanding one and was a result of a great run by Gavin White through our opponents defence. He passed off to Kieran O’Leary who returned a pass to Gavin who finished it to the net. Our win was achieve by our ability to score points from long range. Our total from play was twelve points. Our thanks to Pat O’Shea and his selectors for the great work they put in during the year and their different tactical approach to different games. Our thanks also to our backroom team of Jimmy Galvin, Brian O’Callaghan, Matthew Courtney and Seamus O’Doherty and not forgetting Stephen Brosnan. It was great that John Payne was nominated as Captain for 2018. He had already won six Senior County

Championships and was a great leader throughout the year. PROGRESSIVE 31: Every Wednesday in Crokes Clubhouse at 8.00pm. You will need to bring money and a partner, €5 per person. U-14’s: On Sunday, Fossa played Firies in the East Kerry championship final in the Legion pitch. This proved to be a great game of football, with both teams kicking the ball. The first half was a tight affair with Fossa going in at half time 1-7 to 0-6 ahead. Good displays from Ryan O’Leary and Rian Colleran were a great help. In the second half Firies got off to a great start and got two goals from Stephan Palmer. The strength of the Fossa boys came through with Cian Doyle, Sam Buckley and Patrick Lyons working hard. As the half went on Fossa began to pull away with Harry Kelly and Sean Dineen getting some great scores to help Fossa win the match. On the day best for Fossa were Sean Dineen who scored 3 points and played his best game of the season, Cian Doyle was excellent at full back, Darren Ryan and Patrick Lyons also did well. Scores Harry Kelly 0-5, Darren Ryan 1-01, Sean Dineen 0-3, Ryan O’Leary 1-0, Ted O’Gorman 1-0, Rian Colleran 0-2 and Patrick Lyons 0-2.
