UNVEILING: Mayor of Killarney Marie Moloney unveiled a plaque on Mission Road on Tuesday afternoon in honour of Killarney native Janie McCarthy recognising her heroic work saving lives during World War 2. Photo: Michelle Crean
Killarney recognises one of its most famous daughters
A Killarney woman responsible for saving countless lives during World War 2 was honoured on Tuesday afternoon during a special ceremony and plaque unveiling on Mission Road. | By Michelle Crean Janie McCarthy, born in 1885 at Bohereen na Goun, New Street, played a key role in opposing the Nazi occupation of France during World War 2 and her heroic efforts are akin to those by Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty in Rome. Mayor Marie Moloney had, in the past, called for Janie to be honoured in a similar way to the Monsignor who has a life sized statue erected in his honour on Mission Road. Cllr John O’Donoghue previously brought a similar motion to a Council meeting following calls from his uncle, former councillor Michael Gleeson who made several attempts to honour the war hero in 2005 but it never came to fruition. Lots of work and research led to Tuesday's unveiling including a thesis by Mary G O'Sullivan alongside research by James O'Connor from the Killarney Historic Society and historian Noel Grimes. "I am delighted, as Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, to be able to unveil this plaque to recognise the
contribution of Janie McCarthy and her work for the Resistance during World War II," Marie Moloney said. "Her contribution to the fight for freedom is the reason why we are here. Following the outbreak of World War 2, Janie McCarthy joined the resistance and saved countless lives while staying in war-torn Paris, helping rescue members of the allied forces and intelligence services and smuggling them through the various escape channels and routes to get them out of Nazi occupied France and to safety. Operating in Paris while it was occupied by Nazi forces from 1940 to 1944 she passed hundreds of American, French and other allies through her hands, losing only one." As a result of her work Janie was awarded France’s highest award, the Legion d’Honour, the Croix de Guerre and a Croix de la Resistance. The United States of America also honoured the Killarney native with the Medal of Freedom while Britain awarded her the Tedder Certificate for assisting British personnel to escape. Janie was educated at The Convent of

Mercy and went to France in 1910 where she worked as an au pair in Brittany and as a teacher for 15 years in Vannes. The Germans occupied Paris where she was teaching during World War 2 and she immediately joined La Résistance. Janie’s family members, the Brosnan family and the Cotter family, were in attendance at the unveiling alongside Manager of Killarney Municipal District Angela McAllen, Killarney Municipal District councillors John O'Donoghue, Maura Healy Rae, Donal Grady, and Niall 'Botty' O'Callaghan.
Janie also featured in a booked called ‘Hidden Kerry’, published in 2014, by local author and journalist Breda Joy. "We have long honoured the exploits of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty for his work in saving thousands of allied soldiers and Jews. I find it amazing that two Killarney people would have had so much involvement in the safe escape of allied troops during World War 2, yet it should be no surprise that they were so successful, being from Killarney. I am hugely proud that Killarney now recognises one of its most famous daughters."

Fáilte Ireland launches new long-term tourism plan for Killarney Fáilte Ireland has this week launched the ‘Killarney Destination and Experience Development Plan’ that will help drive and sustain tourism across all parts of the region over the next five years. The aim is to create a sustainable tourism destination by extending the tourism season. Key stakeholders in the area and the local community were consulted and inputted into the plan including Kerry County Council, Irish Hotel Federation, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Kerry Tourism Industry Federation, Kerry Convention Bureau and local tourism marketing groups as well as many local tourism operators and networks. The focus of the plan builds on a number of destination development projects that will bring local experiences to life including Muckross House, Torc Waterfall and Killarney House along with cycling trails that will encourage visitors to discover the Muckross and Dinis Loop. “This Destination and Experience Development Plan, which captures the unique themes central to Killarney, is about looking to the future of tourism in the region and will be hugely important as we work towards a sustained and sustainable recovery," Paul Kelly, CEO of Fáilte Ireland, said. "It provides a framework for tourism businesses and stakeholders to work in partnership over the next five years to create new and improved existing visitor experiences. Local consultation and input was central, and this
collaborative approach provided local stakeholders with the opportunity to contribute and shape the plan." Moira Murrell, Chief Executive, Kerry County Council added that she is "delighted to see the Killarney Destination and Experience Development Plan being launched". "It is a great example of how collaboration is the key to building a sustainable tourism industry here in Killarney and will drive the economic growth for all Kerry," she said. "Outlined in the plan is a major project for Killarney which will examine the potential to capitalise on Killarney’s outdoor assets and re-imagine its stories through its urban spaces. Developments like this, through public realm and urban animation, have the potential to transform and re-imagine Killarney’s urban centre for both visitors and communities.” Bernadette Randles, Irish Hotels Federation said that the "Wild Atlantic Way continues to be a phenomenal success and this DEDP gives us the opportunity as tourism businesses to capitalise on the popularity of the route and by enticing visitors to come to Killarney and Kerry particularly in the off peak season and stay in our hotels, eat in our restaurants and experience everything the town and the National Park has to offer.”

Plan "presents a new vision for Killarney tourism" - Chamber The future of Killarney’s tourism industry is being safeguarded and the town’s reputation as the country’s premier tourist destination is being copper-fastened by the development of a Killarney specific Fáilte Ireland Destination Experience Development Plan (DEDP). That’s the view of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President, Niall Kelleher, who was speaking following the formal launch of the project at a reception in Killarney House and Gardens on Tuesday. The Chamber President said the fiveyear plan will provide a clear development focus and it will harness existing strategic plans as well as examining new projects to enhance Killarney’s long-held reputation as a world class holiday destination. Mr Kelleher said it is hugely positive
to note that central to the development theme will be the adoption of a very responsible and carefully choreographed approach to maximise potential of Killarney’s natural assets, primarily Killarney National Park. “The plan will build on and extend the existing culture and heritage of Killarney through the creation of cultural quarters, creating strong new links between areas of historic and cultural significance and the core town experience,” he said. “Killarney’s world class destination status requires a new development focus to ensure the town experience matches the quality of its stunning natural environment. This plan will develop a coherent Killarney brand and deliver a series of projects that will collectively become transformational in the performance of Killarney."

Spa GAA fundraiser to help upgrade club grounds A fundraising Golf Classic will be staged at Killarney Golf Club on Friday next (July 8).
FAREWELL: Sandra Chute (Deputy Principal) and Colm Ó Súilleabháin (Principal of St Oliver's NS) saying farewell to SNAs Elizabeth O'Doherty and Angela Sheerin on Tuesday afternoon. Photo: Michelle Crean
Elizabeth and Angela are ready for a new adventure
Spa Club GAA, who are organising the event, has carried out some major developments in recent years, including the laying of an all-weather playing pitch and alterations to the clubhouse involving the provision of a larger gym, office areas and toilets upstairs. A new walking path around the club grounds is also widely used by the community. Among the next important projects is the upgrading of the car park in the club
grounds. More than 50 teams of four golfers per team will be taking part in the classic, major sponsors of which are the Killarney Oaks Hotel, Killarney Oils and Tricel. “We’re extremely grateful to all our sponsors, tee-box sponsors and those who have entered teams. Their support is a great help to our club which has grown hugely in recent years,’’ said chairman of the classic organising committee, Billy Morris. The presentation of attractive prizes will be in the Killarney Oaks Hotel on the night of July 8.
For two decades they have been a huge support to pupils at St Oliver's but on Tuesday two members of staff retired. | By Michelle Crean The outpouring of gratitude for their years of service was very evident as colleagues bid farewell to Special Needs Assistants (SNAs) Elizabeth O'Doherty and Angela Sheerin. With a combined 42 years between them they got a fantastic send off from Principal Colm Ó Súilleabháin, Deputy Principal Sandra Chute, staff and pupils as well as the women's family who turned up for the very special lunchtime tribute. Elizabeth, from Dalton's Avenue and originally Kilcummin, was sanctioned by the Dept of Education as part of the very first nationwide rollout of services for children with special needs in 1999. And during her 23 career she attended the same school as her grandchildren! "I loved every bit of it," Elizabeth told the Killarney Advertiser. "When we started here there were 250
SNAs in the country, now there's approximately 18,000. Our role as an SNA was all about inclusion and integration, you're also an advocate for the child." Angela, originally from Cavan and living in Flesk Grove, started as an SNA in St Oliver's in 2003. After 19 years she's ready to take on a new challenge. "It's was a privilege to work in such a fabulous school with great colleagues especially the children in our care," she said. "I'm looking forward to a new adventure." Both thanked their colleagues including former Principal Rory D'Arcy and former Deputy Principal Tim Horgan saying that they both had lots of form filling and background work over the years to support children with special needs. "There was great support from the start from Tim Horgan and Rory D'Arcy, they had a great belief in helping others."

Killarney plans the History of Kilcummin greatest show for helps pupils win top prize Independence Day | By Michelle Crean
Main Street will take on a Disney-like magic for a day next month as the 4th of July celebrations make a return! The festival marks the town’s special centuries-old link with America and will include a spectacular parade with marching bands, striking custom-built floats, baton-twirling cheerleaders, colourful movie characters and leather clad bikers. Thousands of visitors from Stateside choose Killarney as their favourite holiday destination every year and this is the town’s way of giving something back to mark the big US occasion. “Just as our American friends celebrate St Patrick’s Day in style, we will do likewise to mark their Independence Day,” said 4th July Festival Chairman Diarmuid Leen. “We are inviting everybody to come and celebrate with us and to do so in style,” he added. The festivities on Monday, July 4 will get underway with the formal raising of the American Flag at the town hall with the Mayor of Killarney and the President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce presiding. The Statue of Liberty will keep a close watch over Main Street with face-painters and street entertainers roaming the town while Killarney will be turned into Hollywood for a few glorious hours with everybody from Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, Bonnie and Clyde, The Greatest Showman’s Bearded Lady and even a posse
of fun-loving cowboys on the loose.
ENTERTAINMENT
Big bands and top quality singers will perform throughout the town all afternoon while a fun-filled street party will get into full swing with street fireworks and flame-throwers ready to light up the sky. Thousands of people, many waving American flags, will line the streets of the town for the big parade, commencing at 7pm, and that will be followed by a lively hour-long Beat on the Street from 8pm. Ireland’s multi-award winning soul performer Buck Taylor will entertain the masses at the Soul in the Park from 9pm and at 10 o’clock the celebrations will conclude in a fabulous fashion with an open air screening of the hit movie 'The Greatest Showman' on the lawns of Killarney House and Gardens. The Killarney 4th of July celebration is organised by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce with great support from Kerry County Council and Fáilte Ireland as well as sponsors Heineken. Tickets for the open air events on the lawns of Killarney House and Gardens – including the Soul in the Park and the big screen production of 'The Greatest Showman' – will be free of charge and available on Eventbrite.ie from June 20. "The children are thrilled with their win and we are all very proud of them, especially their class teacher Mr Mannix and SNAs Rena and Irene, who invested so much time into the project. The class visited Kerry County Museum for the presentation of the award and they enjoyed a tour of the museum."

Fr Kevin McNamara was the serving Parish Priest in Glenflesk when he passed away suddenly last December. Locals are keen to remember him at a memorial Mass in thanksgiving which will be held on Wednesday next (June 29) in St Agatha’s Church, Glenflesk at 7.30pm. All are welcome and there will be refresh-
ments afterwards in Glenflesk GAA Hall. "The parish was shocked and deeply saddened with the news of the death of our Parish Priest and President of Glenflesk GAA," Seamus Healy from Glenflesk GAA told the Killarney Advertiser. "Fr Kevin McNamara came to our parish in July and in those few short months we came to see his diligence as a worker who sought to dedicate his time and energy towards helping the local community. The future was going to be bright with his plans for upgrading our churches, yet we can only presume God had bigger plans for Fr Kevin. May his soul rest in peace."

Living in Europe in the 21st century, she was again forced to leave her home, hastily collect things, go into the unknown and start her life over. Yulia comes from Donetsk, the east of Ukraine. In 2014, when the city was taken over by pro-Russian militants, who set up the Donetsk People's Republic there, she urgently left for Odessa with her husband and pregnant daughter. The whole life of the family fit in the trunk of a small car. In the southern city near the Black Sea, Yulia began a new life. She is a cook by profession and in Odessa, she worked in a restaurant as a chef. From February 24, since the beginning of Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, her restaurant has started preparing free lunches for the Ukrainian military. Yulia Liventsova spent many hours in the kitchen to feed our soldiers. And when the Russian army occupied the neighbouring city of Kherson (now
under Russian occupation), Russia began firing rockets from their ships located in the Black Sea, targeting Odessa. Yulia’s husband made an important decision; he put his wife, daughter and granddaughter in the car to take them to the border with Moldova. "You have to go to save the child and the granddaughter, and I will stay here to help your old mother," he said. And Yulia left. For a month they lived with acquaintances in the vineyard, and then moved to Ireland. Not knowing a word of English, with two T-shirts and two pants in a suitcase - this was the beginning of a new chapter for her life in Ireland. Yulia is a bright, small and strong woman. She laughs a lot and does a lot for people. There were not enough cooks at the Eviston Hotel where she stayed. Yulia offered her help. Now she is a sous-chef in the restaurant. "I was ready to work as a volunteer, but in Ireland, everyone who wants to work has this opportunity, even without a good knowledge of the language,” Yulia said.

the kitchen, then she has a three-hour break. What is she doing at this time? She attends English language courses daily then returns to the kitchen in the afternoon and works until 10pm. When Julia has a day off, she goes to the pool. Yes, Yulia is in great physical shape and recently got a new tattoo - the national symbol of Ukraine - a huge trident on her shoulder. Recently, for the Ukrainian Day at the K-Fest in Killorglin, Yulia organised a day of Ukrainian cuisine. To do this, she

Kerry pupil takes top prize in national final
A Kerry pupil's imagination has helped him secure the overall prize in a national competition this week. | By Michelle Crean DJ Poff from Boheshill National School, whose project imagined a world of hydro-powered cars, solar-powered shoes, and homes built on raised platforms to allow plants and animals to live freely in their natural habitat, won the National Broadband Ireland (NBI) 'Imagine the Future' competition. The competition invited students in the 679 schools in the NBP intervention area to create a piece of art to represent the world of possibilities that will be opened up by high-speed broadband. His school mate Colin O’Shea from Boheshill National School in Glencar, was also named among the competition winners. National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company delivering the National Broadband Plan (NBP), hosted one hundred primary school pupils, from Junior Infants to Sixth Class, at an event at the Barretstown fun camp in Kildare for the presentation of prizes to the winners of the national final. Project entries ranged from robot sur-
geons to interactive classrooms where VR headsets transport you to Ancient Egypt to wander around the pyramids. A key theme across the shortlisted entries was the focus on solar powered systems to reduce the impact of fossil fuels. NBI Chairman David McCourt presented the top prize to DJ whose project also highlighted the use of Artificial Intelligence [AI] to monitor homes and reduce theft. “NBI is proud to be bringing next generation fibre broadband to the next generation," David McCourt said. "Primary school students all over Ireland are already seeing the benefit of high speed fibre broadband connections in the classroom and the 'Imagine the Future' competitors have shown amazing creativity in representing the possibilities it opens up. These young artists are the leaders of the future and we can be in no doubt it is in safe hands when we see the ingenuity on display. We are on track to be one of the first countries in Europe to provide high-speed broadband to one hundred percent of the population which is going to lead to long term economic opportunities for the children of today.”
Planning started in September 2021 for a trip to the South of France; flights, accommodation and a concert in Nimes, an hour from Marseille, were easily booked. Flying out of Dublin at the time didn’t register as a problem until March when we started hearing about issues with airport security. We didn’t panic - surely by June they will have their house in order! Flying out from Terminal 2 on Saturday June 11 after a Bank Holiday, we felt that we would definitely fly out. We did, but not after a back breaking 90 minutes queuing awaiting passage through security. Air travel for a long time now is not a comfortable experience. We arrived 3.5 hours before take-off, dropped off our checked bags in less than 10 minutes and joined the queue before the escalators in T2. From there we thought that things would move swiftly. However, it was not to be as the queue moved at a snail’s pace. Keeping a 10-year-old entertained during this time
was challenging and the adults were not much better. It was a picture of human suffering all round; elderly flyers shuffling with weary determination, pregnant women sighing with the strain of it all and the rest of us, well, fuming at the stupidity of the system, especially, when you read that over 13 managers in Dublin Airport Authority are paid more than €250,000 each to prevent this sort of crisis. Finally, through security we could relax and know no matter what, we would be in France that evening. Dublin Airport is a fine airport when running well but until that happens we won’t be repeating our recent experience. Top Tips – Dublin Airport • Check in online. Check in your hand luggage, it’s free and stress free (Aer Lingus) • Check www.dfa.ie/travel/ for COVID requirements at your destination • Aer Lingus promote the Verifly App for preflight check – we found it useful • Dublin Airport Parking – Book online, no fussing with tickets, www.dublinairport. com • Bring snacks/drinks/battery powerbank for the queue and a good deal of patience!

READY FOR ACTION: Garda Mike Milner leads the 18 national school teams onto the pitch at Fitzgerald Stadium for the Killarney Garda National School 7-a-side Football Blitz, where Kenmare won to Fossa, 3-5 to 2-7, on Monday. Photo: Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan
A moving tribute was paid to Garda Paudie Twohig by his former colleagues and his family during a football blitz in town. | By Michelle Crean On Monday, 270 pupils from 18 Kerry schools and one from Cork came together to battle it out in Fitzgerald Stadium for the 16th Killarney Garda National School 7-a-side Football Blitz. The last blitz was held in 2019 before the pandemic took hold. Last August Paudie, a father of two little girls, passed away following a short battle with cancer, and as one of the organisers of the blitz since it began, his colleagues and family wanted to pay tribute to him. Garda Eddie Walsh led the tribute followed by Superintendent Flor Murphy. Then Paudie's beloved wife Diane Collins Twohig, who works as a local Garda in Killarney, said a few words. Paudie's daughter's Tara and Olivia, his father John, sister Mairead and brother Tadgh were also present, including club officers from his club in Aghinagh, Chief Superintendent Eileen Foster and members of the Kerry Division and retired members who also helped out on the day.
Moving tribute made to popular Paudie at Garda blitz
"All 18 teams were led out by piper Mike Milner who is a Sergeant in Cahersiveen," Eddie told the Killarney Advertiser. "All 270 players formed a circle and a tribute was paid to Paudie. We had his Kerry Garda GAA jersey and his Aghinagh jersey. After the speeches and before the tournament began his family released blue and white balloons which were his club colours, a blue balloon to signify An Garda Síochána and red and white to signify Cork as he was an avid Cork GAA supporter. Also, John C O'Shea recorded it all on a drone."
MATCHES
The event began at 10am and ran until 5pm with a total of 52 matches played throughout the day. "We had three pitches going at the one time with 12 matches an hour." The winning team was St John's Boys National School Kenmare with a score-
line of 3 goals 5 points beating Fossa by a point. The Tadhg O'Suilleabháin Memorial Cup was presented to the captain of the team by Sean and Mary O'Sullivan. The boy's winning Player of the Tournament was Samuel Scroope. The Joint Overall Winners were Faye Lynch (Fossa NS) and Sadhbh O'Halloran (Kilcummin NS). Eddie added that he'd like to thank all the sponsors including Liam Brosnan from Irish Drains for their support and to everyone who helped on the day. Also Brian O'Shea and Alex Hennigan and other students from The Sem provided by Vince Cooper to help out on the day. "It's a great sporting and community event for An Garda Síochána to interact with pupils, parents, teachers and the community. This year we went past the mark of over 3,000 total players since it began. We're looking forward to 2023," he said.

5km of colour fun in Kilgobnet This weekend promises to be full of messy fun as children, parents and staff take part in a colour party!
| By Michelle Crean Kilgobnet National School Parents Association are organising the 5km Family Colour Splash Run on Sunday (June 26) and everyone is welcome to come and join. The circular 5km route will complete the final kilometres required for the children to reach the 42km goal set by the school, as part of the Health Promotion initiative. Along the route, participants will be sprayed with colour at the various sta-
tions, along with a few other messy surprises to add to the fun! Donations can be made on the day and there'll be refreshments, music, a raffle and a cake sale. “The Colour Splash 5km, which is organised by our Parents Association, is an important fundraising event for our school," Marguerite Casey, Chairperson of Kilgobnet NS Parents Association, said. "Everyone, from the school community and beyond, has a great time for a good
cause.” Maura O’Connor, Principal at the school, said that they're all excited about the event. “It’s great to see the fun run going ahead again this year after a three year void due to the pandemic. We’re all looking forward to a great day!” For anyone looking to get involved they said just come along from 1.30pm on the day and join in. "Donations will be gratefully received."
It's part of a bigger package which will see a total of €223,022.87 announced for four Community First Responder groups in Kerry including Kerry Cancer Support Group which will receive €100,000 for the purchase of a wheelchair accessible vehicle, Baile Mhuire CLG €50,000, and Banna Community Rescue Boats Ireland who will receive €28,4222.87, both for the purchase of a vehicle. The funding will allow the groups to transport people who have mobility issues or people being treated for cancer. Community groups that perform roles such as transporting blood samples from hospitals and delivering medication, will also be supported under the initiative. Mountain Rescue Teams, Air Ambulances and Sub-Aqua Groups are also to receive funding. “This is welcome funding that will ensure that four vital First Responder community groups in Kerry can continue to provide excellent care and key voluntary services to some of Kerry’s most vulnerable, enhancing the communities they serve,” Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley said.
His Holiness enjoys film made by Killarney man | By Michelle Crean A local man, who was Assistant Director on a new film, was delighted to see it premiered at the Vatican in Rome after it was presented to Pope Francis. Ciaran McCarthy from Killarney worked on the EWTN Film Docudrama ‘Speak of the Devil' a Viking re-enactment of the biblical Prodigal Son story focusing on the age-old battle between good and evil, and features the services of around 50 actors, crew and support staff in a film shoot lasting several weeks. It was filmed in Ireland and the United States, and was screened in the Pope’s private cinema in the Vatican, and presented to his Holiness Pope Francis. The film offers a unique take on the parable of the Prodigal Son, and explores how people can use prayer and belief to help deal with the challenges of everyday life. The plot is recast in a medieval setting where the father patiently allows

his son to make his own choices, but also awaits him with open arms and unconditional love when he comes back home. This Irish docudrama presents the celebrated parable in a whole new light because the cinematic retelling, interwo-
ven with insightful interviews, teaches the importance of being “battle-ready” in the spiritual struggles we all face each day. “It was a real buzz working on this Viking theme production re-enacting the
parable of the Prodigal Son, and it’s just amazing that – after all our hard work – it has been screened in the Vatican’s private Filmoteca Cinema," Ciaran said. The production re-enactments were filmed on location at the former Ulster History Park at Omagh, County Tyrone. It features 25 crew and 25 cast all recruited in Ireland. Filming took place in May 2021, due to the ongoing pandemic all cast and crew had to be tested for COVID every day which added much pressure to the filming as one positive result could have meant complete shutdown. “That presented considerable challenges and tested our own resilience and strength of spirit during the making of the film," Producer Aidan Gallagher explained. EWTN Ireland’s previous two productions directed by Campbell Miller were aired on SKY, Virgin Media, Amazon Prime and worldwide on the global EWTN network.

Five habits for weight loss Few people start focusing on their nutrition because they love counting calories. Weight loss might be a big reason. But wanting weight loss usually means more than the number on the scale. For most of us, we want to have greater energy, change our clothing size and become healthy. Doing things that won’t work for your lifestyle long term can cause you to quit because the effort doesn’t seem worth the reward. To help, here are my five daily habits to make nutrition simple and low stress, and attain any weight loss goals you might have! People don’t quit “diets” because they don’t produce results, people quit because they are too complicated, contain “rules” and are time consuming. I’m going to let you in on some secrets our nutrition coaches at Activate use when coaching clients and it’s not all about calories, macros and quantities, it's often more about our relationship with food and our lifestyle habits.
HABIT 1. WRITE DOWN YOUR WHY
If you are sluggish during the day, miserable in your clothes, or borderline pre-diabetic, your WHY might be to: A. Wake up excited to start the day! Take the kids to the park, excel at work, get rid of that afternoon crash. B. Change your medical "future” so it doesn’t match your medical history! C. Feel sexy in your body again! If you have a deep understanding of WHY you want to change, you can focus on that when the times get tough.
HABIT 2. DRINK WATER
Water is key to a healthy body but can also help with weight loss. Not only does water make you feel fuller so you eat less, it also helps you replace calorie-containing drinks like fizzy and energy drinks.
HABIT 3. EAT PROTEIN
When you eat more protein you tend to feel full longer. How much do you need? It depends. If you’d like me to give you an estimate, send us an email at nutrition@activate.ie with “protein” in the subject line. When you are in a calorie deficit (necessary for weight loss) eating protein can also help you maintain muscle mass which can help with your overall health, but also in achieving a more “toned” and defined look. As you get older, you lose lean mass (both muscle and bone). This affects how long you live as well as how functional and healthy that life is. The more protein in your muscles, the stronger your muscles can get.
HABIT 4. DAILY MOVEMENT
Our new normal in life has become structured in a way that makes it very easy to avoid movement. We sit in cars, at our desks, come home and sit on the couch. However, because of our sedentary lifestyle, pain in knees and stiff backs have become the norm. Start by moving 30 minutes a day and get in strength training three to five times a week. Intentional movement can help with weight loss, not just in calories, but in mindset.
HABIT 5. REMEMBER THAT YOU’RE DRIVING THE BUS
You’re in charge of the direction of your energy, clothing sizes, your medical future vs medical history. Out of all of these top five tactics, this one might be the most important. It’s up to you. I know that my best days are ones I have a plan for. Following these five tactics will not be easy in the beginning but they can be simple, if you focus. If you need help implementing strategies in your life to help with your weight loss goals, shoot me an email and I’ll get you moving in the right direction.

Detox to reset your body for better health It's so important to detox the body every now and then. The benefits include clearing out the gut by de-bloating the stomach. This in turn increases energy levels, leading to healthier skin and hair, aids internal organs to work better resulting in weight loss, anti-cellulite, and an overall improvement in the immune system by healing constipation and leaky gut, reducing inflammation - giving you a better feeling of well-being. We don't drive our car without getting it serviced every year, and when we do it runs better. The same should be done for our bodies. How many can say that they have detoxed and recharged the body this year. If you answered not yet or never don't worry, it's never too late to start. Yes, it's difficult and hard to start or to know where to get started, but I can guarantee you that you will feel great and your skin will look better after it. Try to start off with introducing extra fruit and vegetables into your diet and cut out processed food as much as possible especially anything in a pack. Cut out all carbohydrates; breads, pastas, potatoes, for a short while which will
allow the body time to flush out the toxins that have built-up over time. It is extremely important to increase your water intake. Every day we are supposed to drink two litres of water, during a detox try to increase it to four litres. Introduce a juice to replace one meal a day for three days eventually leading up to a three-day juice diet. You will suffer a few headaches, they will pass but you will get great clarity when you build up to the three day juice detox. The best green detox juice includes one lemon, a bunch of celery, bunch of basil, one green apple, and a half-inch piece of ginger but this is optional. Celery is an amazing vegetable as it contains antioxidants that may help to lower inflammation in your body. It's also hydrating and low in sugar. It can help counteract acidosis, purify the bloodstream, aid digestion, helps prevents migraines, relax the nerves, reduce blood pressure and clears up skin problems, congestion and spots. For more information or advice on how to get started, book a consultation with Jill call 064 6632966.

Explore all options outside of CAO Naturally, students are really focused on finalising CAO course choices ahead of the July 1 deadline but it is important to explore all the other options available outside of this too. Some of those options are now linked on the CAO website on www.cao.ie/options but they don’t share the July 1 deadline, are not based on Leaving Cert points and provide a huge variety of education and training opportunities in multiple areas and sectors. Many now also provide progression routes onto higher levels of qualifications on completion.
FURTHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Check out the options at Post Leaving Cert (PLC) level in Colleges of Further Education. With almost 2,000 courses available nationwide there is something for everyone. See individual FET Colleges for more details or www.fetchcourses. ie. Applications for these courses are accepted up to the autumn start dates but popular courses do fill up early so don’t delay with your application. At local level check out the extensive range of courses available at www.kerrycollege.ie. Apprenticeships are another fantastic option. Details of the 65 apprenticeships currently available can be found on apprenticeship.ie with several more under development. Openings in apprenticeships become available throughout the year. Traineeships are another great option for skills-based and employment-focused training and they also recruit throughout the year. See www.solas.ie/programmes/traineeship/ for more details and also the local Education and Training Board (ETB). For students or adults who need a more supported journey in education and training, take a look at the wonderful opportunities offered through the National Learning Network nationwide on www.
Niamh Dwyer is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore, and Chairperson of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. She is also a Career Consultant. For details see www.mycareerplan.ie or follow MyCareerPlan on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
rehab.ie/national-learning-network and at local level take a look at the very successful programmes running in their Tralee centre.
STUDY ABROAD OPTIONS
It is also still possible to apply to study outside of Ireland. To check out opportunities to study through English in Europe, go to www.eunicas.ie and ww.medicalpoland.ie. For anyone interested in applying to universities in the UK, the UCAS Clearing system opens on July 5 on www. ucas.com which always has lots of great courses open to new applicants. So the key message to all students is to take another look at all options both within CAO and outside of it. The pathways after the Leaving Cert are many and varied and pave the way for a very bright future. Make sure to check them all out in plenty of time in order to be well positioned to move on the next and exciting part of the journey!

KILLARNEY
INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY
GOAL calling on cyclists to pedal west for Ukraine Ireland's cycling community is coming together on August 20 to support Irish humanitarian aid organisation GOAL and their Ukraine Crisis Appeal. GOAL's 'Pedal West for Ukraine' challenge aims to help raise life-saving funds for people impacted by the conflict, which is in its fourth month. The 75 kilometre challenge begins at Ballyseedy Home & Garden Centre in Tralee, who are also partnering with GOAL on the event, before going through Camp and Annascaul on the Dingle Peninsula. The route continues to Inch Beach and Castlemaine, before finishing off at Ballyseedy Home & Garden Centre. GOAL Board member, former TD and Kerry footballer, Jimmy Deenihan, is looking forward to the event. “We are delighted to welcome as many cyclists as possible and their families to this beautiful part of the country on what is a breath-taking route. While the cycle will be a lot of fun, it is to support the most urgent of humani-
tarian crises in Ukraine, where millions of people have been impacted by this tragic war. We encourage people to get involved and support people in this time of need.” Since the conflict broke out in Ukraine in late February, 6.8 million Ukrainians have fled their country and crossed international borders and there are 7.1 million people who are displaced within Ukraine. GOAL has set up a base in Lviv, appointed a Director to lead GOAL’s operations in Ukraine and is recruiting a number of other staff. In partnership with a Ukrainian charity called Right to Protection, GOAL is delivering a number of services to displaced Ukrainians. These include the provision of legal advice on access to social welfare, housing, employment and education and counselling sessions to help displaced
people reduce stress and anxiety and overcome the extreme trauma they have experienced since the conflict broke out and take positive steps for good mental health. GOAL will provide these services in temporary shelters in three cities in Eastern Ukraine to start with, with possible additional coverage in two other cities. Speaking about the event Managing Director of Ballyseedy Home & Garden, Nathan McDonnell said "We are gearing up to a brilliant event for an excellent cause and thankfully we're in a position to help". "A little support can go a long way and it's so important that we stand in solidarity with our Ukrainian friends. We encourage all ages to get behind this fundraiser in any way they can, during this difficult time for Ukraine." Advance registration is required. For more information and to register for GOAL’s 'Pedal West for Ukraine', please visit: www.goalglobal.org/ pedalwestforukraine/.

Pub's quirky giant mug receives mixed reaction Cambridgeshire locals in the UK were left bemused and shocked when a 12ft (3.6m) high mug appeared at the side of their local pub. While some said that they like it on social media sites this week, others said the giant tankard at The High Flyer in Ely was "ugly" and "an eyesore". The pub is located within a conservation area in the city centre close to the cathedral on Newnham Street. There are fears from locals that the white "monstrosity" will be plagued with graffiti which will bring a bad name to the area. A machinist from nearby Stretham said he was in favour of the new addition. "I think it's very quirky, I like it," Alan Thompson said. "It's got a nice look to it. It's fresh... and it stands out." However, Graham Hughes disagreed. "I spotted it a couple of days ago in the car park, wondering what it was," he said. "It's a bit weird, it'd probably be a better idea if they decorated it rather than leaving it plain. "It looks a bit of an eyesore at the moment." East Cambridgeshire District Council tweeted that it is investigating the matter after a number of complaints from locals. 'We have received several reports that a large object has been erected onto the High Flyer Pub in Ely. Our Planning Enforcement team have been made aware and are looking into this matter. We would like to thank residents for reporting this to the Council.'

Nobel Peace Prize sells for €100m to help Ukraine refugees It's regarded as the ultimate recognition for contributions to humanity - so it's no surprise that a Nobel Prize sold for €100m this week.
Shellfish warning issued for Castlemaine Harbour A warning has been issued to the public not to gather shellfish for personal consumption in the Castlemaine Harbour area due to the presence of two marine toxin groups. That's according to the Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) which says that the toxins can cause serious illness if contaminated shellfish is consumed either raw or cooked. The toxin groups, Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PST) and Diarrhetic Shellfish Toxins (DST), were detected during routine testing as part of Ireland’s shellfish monitoring programme, which is managed by the SFPA with the Marine Institute. As a result of the detection, the Castlemaine production area is now closed for the harvesting of shellfish until further notice. All results are available on the the Marine Institute’s website http://webapps.marine. ie/HABs. “Ireland has a robust and effective shellfish monitoring programme in place to
ensure that the highest standards of health and safety are maintained at all times, for the benefit of consumers and to maintain Ireland’s reputation as a world-class producer," Paschal Hayes, Executive Chairperson of the SFPA, said. "This monitoring programme has now detected the presence of two serious toxins in the Castlemaine Harbour area and we are strongly advising members of the public not to gather shellfish for personal consumption in this area." He added that they are also reminding the public to only purchase seafood, whether for personal consumption or for sale, through reputable suppliers. "Food businesses, including restaurants and retail outlets, should always look for the oval approval number on orders which confirms the supplier is approved to sell live bivalve molluscs.” Anyone with concerns regarding fishing activity that might be illegal or contrary to seafood safety regulations should contact the regulator directly via its confidential telephone line at 1800 76 76 76.
However its recipient, Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov, who jointly received the accolade alongside Maria Ressa in 2021, sold it to raise funds for Ukrainian refugee children suffering from the ongoing war. Mr Muratov is editor of a Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta which for years has actively criticised President Vladimir Putin and his Government, but Russian State control meant it was shut down in March of this year. The Nobel Prize was sold on Monday by Heritage Auctions in New York, which coincided with World Refugee Day. Receiving the Nobel Prize in October 2021 both Muratov and Ressa were recognised for "their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace".
The Nobel Committee's words are a modest account of the life's work of Muratov and Ressa. In the tradition of other Nobel recipients, their work does not cease after the award ceremony. Mr Muratov's contributions continue to go beyond free speech to humanitarian initiatives. He donated the Nobel committee's cash award to children suffering from spinal muscular atrophy, among other charities. Despite the forced closure of his news outlet, Novaya Gazeta, he works tirelessly to make an impact. The idea to auction off his Nobel Prize was his own and he also agreed to donate the accompanying £407,000 cash award to charity. It "is to give the children refugees a chance for a future", he explained. He now hopes that selling the 175 grams 23-carat gold medal which is worth less than €10,000 melted down, would "become a beginning of a flash mob, as an example to follow so people auction their valuable possessions to help Ukrainians".

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
Salvias are valuable plants for any gardener One plant which I think is a super addition to borders and pots is the salvia. There are many to choose from, but there are two broad differences, one is the bedding salvia, with its spikes of fire-engine-red flowers – though they come in cream and purple also. These have become less popular with gardeners over the years, as slugs eat them with relish. I have found the product 'Grazers’, a spray, excellent as a slug repellent. As an aside, ‘Grazers’ also do a rabbit, deer, lily beetle and caterpillar repellent, all of which are organically certified and perfectly safe to use. They are also quite effective products. Secondly, everyone knows the herb salvia, or sage which goes perfect with chicken, roast squash or parma ham, it is a flavour of autumn. However, there are over 500 salvias to choose from, and happily, nurseries are taking notice of them. This year a notable addition to most garden centre stock is the hybrid Wish collection. There are three; ‘Love and Wishes’, ‘Ember’s Wish’ and ‘Wendy’s Wish’. Being the greedy gardener I am, I planted all three, and have been rewarded by large bushy plants with masses of colour. I planted them in a free draining, sunny part of the garden, where they have plenty of space. The plants themselves reach about 80cm, flower spikes being at least
20cm long in colours pink, aubergine and orange. Another beauty is S. Amistad, which every garden with a flower border should have. They grow up to 1.2m, with lush dark green foliage, topped by dark blue flowers. The calyces (the bit the flower comes out of!) are almost black, giving it a fantastically dramatic look. S. nemerosa is a hardy variety, used in Irish gardens for years, as it spreads happily keeping weeds at bay. ‘New Dimension Blue’ is a lovely variety, with rich blue flower spikes. S. nemerosa does not grow that tall, about 30cm. It is also one of the few salvias which will tolerate heavy soil and a lot of winter rain. S. roemeriana ‘Hot Trumpets’ is also a low growing spreading salvia, about 30cm, with the brightest red flower spikes I have yet to see rivalled! It grows well in dappled shade, adding great splashes of colour. Another red is S. x jamensis ‘Hot Lips’. It is an evergreen perennial, which loves full sun. It grows to about 50cm, and has flowers from April through to the first frosts. The flowers are bicoloured red and white, like little flags. ‘Killer Cranberry’ is another beauty with magenta flowers. All salvias are attractive to bees and other pollinators, and as such are valuable plants for any gardener. They look great grouped with other perennials, as well as in pots or on their own in beds.

Cronin joins Moonraker Field in pre-grist rehearsal Current British Rally Championship (BRC) leader, Keith Cronin, has placed an entry for the Moonraker Rally, which is set to take place in his home county of Cork on Saturday, July 2. The Munster Car Club organised event will be based in the village of Ballyvourney and is to be a counting round of the Motorsport Ireland National Forestry Rally Championship. Cronin and co-driver, Mikie Galvin from Aghadoe, previously won the Moonraker in 2017, and then as now, are using the outing to gain additional gravel running in aid of a BRC campaign. The duo went
on to take the British title that year, and presently head the 2022 points standings following a victory on the Jim Clark Rally last month in their Volkswagen Polo GTi R5. With the BRC due to resume the following weekend on the Nicky Grist Rally in Wales, the Moonraker is ideally placed to provide the required warm-up. “The first two BRC rounds were on tarmac, and we’re now heading into two gravel rounds," Cronin explained. "We haven’t done a forest rally since the Cambrian last October, and that was in the Fiesta rather than the Polo, plus we’re on Pirelli tyres now, so there’s some learning to be done.”

Treasured Memories of Sheila McCarthy late of Muckross Grove, Killarney and formerly of Annaghmore, Headford, Killarney who passed away on the 28th June 2019.
In loving memory of a wonderful mom Sheila McCarthy Late of Muckross Grove, Killarney who died on the 28th of June 2019.
O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. GH

Clifford to make his return against Mayo ALL-IRELAND SFC QUARTER-FINAL
_____________________________________________________________
Kerry v Mayo Sunday at 4pm Croke Park, Live on RTÉ 2 Star forward David Clifford is expected to slot back into Kerry’s starting lineup for Sunday’s do-or-die All-Ireland quarter-final against Mayo. Clifford missed the team’s last match, the Munster final on May 28, due to a calf injury he sustained in the previous outing against Cork. The Killarney Advertiser understands that the Fossa native could have played in that provincial decider but Jack O’Connor and his backroom team decided to keep him in reserve, anticipating that he wouldn’t be needed. That proved to be a wise decision as The Kingdom coasted to a 23-point victory in Killarney. Nevertheless, Kerry football’s gossipmongers are never not at it and speculation about Clifford’s status was rife this past week. Several supporters reached out to this journalist seeking confirmation of the rumour that Clifford had been ruled out of the Mayo game entirely. O’Connor confirmed earlier this week that Clifford should be okay, although the somewhat unconvincing nature of his response gave some fans further cause for concern. However, the Killarney Advertiser understands that the three-time All-Star is currently available for selection and barring any unforeseen circumstances he will reclaim his No. 14 jersey for Sunday’s crunch game in Croke Park.
RECOVERED
Spa duo Dan O’Donoghue (leg) and Dara Moynihan (quad) have also recovered in time to be considered by the management team and they will be hopeful of seeing some game time. O’Donoghue was one of Kerry’s standout performers in the league before suffering an awkward fracture, and Moynihan has also put in some fine performances. Dylan Casey, the young corner back who captained Austin Stacks to County Championship glory in 2021, will unfortunately miss the rest of the intercounty season after undergoing surgery on the ankle injury he picked up against Limerick. Kerry will name their team at 8pm tonight (Friday).
UNDERDOGS
Mayo may be coming into this match as underdogs after losing heavily to Kerry in the league final but the Connacht side were missing several starters that day in April, many of whom have returned or are expected to return this weekend. Key forward Ryan O’Donughue (groin) could be in line to play his first championship game of the season, while Rob Hennelly, Oisín Mullin, Paddy Durcan, Kevin McLoughlin and Diarmuid O’Connor are all back at it as well. Cillian O’Connor will also be available from the start; the championship’s all-time leading scorer was a late substitute in that Division 1 final after recovering from a lengthy Achilles injury. The GAA have revealed that a large crowd of up to 75,000 will attend Sunday’s double-header. Armagh and Galway will get the action underway at 1.45pm.

24.06.2022
Kerry supporters have reasons to cheerful …but let’s not forget the reasons to be fearful It appears as though the four-week layoff has done little to dent the confidence of the green and gold faithful. An informal poll carried out on Twitter revealed that 88.9% of my followers are expecting Kerry to beat Mayo in the All-Ireland quarter-final. Over half of the 323 respondents think the margin of victory will be four points or more. The team’s league form was certainly encouraging and they did all that was asked of them in Munster, so perhaps it is only natural that fans are anticipating another victory and safe passage to a semi-final against Dublin. There must be some niggling doubts, however, even if they appear to be buried deep in the back of supporters’ minds at this particular moment in time. For balance, here are some reasons to be optimistic followed by some factors that should make us wary of what might come to pass on Jones’ Road on Sunday afternoon.
REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL
1. Form. Taking into account league and championship (and pre-season too if you want to go back that far) Kerry have been the best and most consistent team in Ireland so far this year. They won three out of three in the McGrath Cup, six out of eight in the league and two out of two in Munster, all while play-
ing a decent brand of football. The only game they lost was irrelevant from their perspective – and it came against the All-Ireland champions who were fighting for their Division 1 status. Crucially, key players like Gavin White, Paudie Clifford, Seán O’Shea and David Clifford have all been moving well. 2. The League Final. Kerry’s last meeting against this opponent was a totally one-sided demolition job. Jack O’Connor’s side defeated Mayo by 3-19 to 0-13 in April’s league final at Croke Park with Man of the Match David Clifford scoring 1-6 (1-5 from play). In March, Kerry also beat Mayo in the league in Tralee (1-12 to 0-14). 3. The Defence. After being the butt of the joke for a number of years, Kerry’s defence seems to have made significant improvements in 2022. Jason Foley has been excellent at full back while Tadhg Morley has made the No. 6 jersey his own. Add to that the speed and guile of Tom O’Sullivan, Brian Ó Beaglaoich, Gavin White and Graham O’Sullivan and you have a pretty settled and assured back six. Goalkeeper Shane Ryan has also impressed of late. 4. The Jack Factor. Jack O’Connor has ticked all the right boxes so far in his third spell as Kerry manager; you would be hard-pressed to find very many sticks to beat him with at this juncture. Up to
this point, it appears as though the players have responded very well to his reappointment. The shrewd Dromid man has them playing with confidence. 5. Cliffy is Back. This one speaks for itself.
REASONS TO BE FEARFUL
1. The Layoff. The last thing any intercounty squad wants is a month of inactivity in the middle of the season but that’s exactly what Kerry have had to deal with. It’s farcical really, and there’s absolutely no question that it puts them at a disadvantage heading into this match. Mayo have played two challenging games in recent weeks while Kerry have been left playing amongst themselves. 2. Untested. As commanding as Kerry were in Munster, the games were virtually meaningless. If the competition was properly run, they wouldn’t be playing against the likes of Cork or Limerick at all, such is the gulf in talent that currently exists between the teams. Ulster folk can quibble all they want about Kerry’s easy route to the All-Ireland series but the reality is that there’s no substitute for tough, testing championship action. Kerry have sampled none of that in 2022. 3. Croke Park Record. Croke Park is traditionally considered a home away from home for the Kerry footballers but their recent record at HQ leaves plenty
to be desired. They have won just twice in their last 10 visits to the capital and their last championship result there – the 2021 All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Tyrone – really stung. 4. Full-Strength Mayo. When you compare Mayo’s starting 15 in the league final to the starting 15 that is likely to take to the field this weekend, you quickly realise how unwise it is to read too much into that last result. James Horan should more or less have a full deck to play with this time and having Oisín Mullin and Paddy Durcan back in the fold is sure to give the match a different complexion. 5. Clifford Under Wraps. In April, Mayo left Pádraig O’Hora completely isolated on David Clifford. The results, from their point of view, were disastrous. With that in mind, James Horan will surely set his defence up differently in an attempt to curtail Clifford’s influence on the game. Expect the explosive full forward to be surrounded and penned in as much as possible. If Mayo are successful in this endeavour, it will give them a huge lift – it could even propel them to another famous win. VERDICT: Complacency on Kerry’s part will be fatal but with a new manager on board and with the chastening defeats of the past two seasons still fresh in their minds, it’s hard to see that being a factor. Mayo could well hit them hard early on but if Kerry are at full strength, they should win this game by 3-5 points.

Kingdom will tee up date with Dublin Former intercounty goalkeeper Eamonn Fitzgerald believes that Kerry will defeat Mayo in Sunday’s quarter-final Call it early. I expect that the All-Ireland senior football semi-finals will be Derry v Armagh on Saturday, July 9 and Kerry v Dublin on Sunday, July 10. The first real championship test for Kerry comes on Sunday in Croke Park, a repeat of the same pairing we saw in the National League final: Kerry v Mayo. The road to Croker is often paved with golden promises. The bookies’ money is
KEY FIGURE: Aidan O’Shea will play an important part for Mayo as they look to upset the odds against Kerry. Photo: Stephen McCarthy/ Sportsfile.
on Kerry as the favourites to bring Sam Maguire back to the Kingdom for the first time since 2014. Jack O’Connor knows all about climbing those hallowed steps of the Hogan Stand for football‘s greatest prize. He also needs no reminder of the mood in a losing dressing after any final. Kerry’s form has been good with a fine league culminating in victory in the final.
They overwhelmed Mayo at Croke Park in April. They then demolished Cork and Limerick in what were really “no-contest” games. Cork did well enough for 50 minutes, but when Kerry gave the turbo engine full throttle they won by a big margin. Ditto for the Munster final played here in the Park. Now, four weeks later, the road to Croker opens up. The league and cup double prospect is what’s on most people’s minds.
JACK’S A WINNER
Jack O’Connor is a realist, a pragmatist and a winner. As I have indicated in this column in the past, he is also a lucky manager and luck is an important element in any manager’s success. Yes, the ingredients to win the Sam Maguire are in place, but there are caveats that will temper any over-confidence that the Dromid Pearse’s supremo may entertain. Filling a month-long gap without a match and keeping a sense of freshness in the training schedule has occupied his mind. An away bonding session has been helpful, so I expect to see a big performance on Sunday next. Some weeks ago I picked Kerry to win the July All-Ireland final. I stick by that as I see the potential of this Kerry squad. Mind you, the odds lengthened considerably after the Dublin of old hammered Kildare. They haven’t gone away by any means and if Kerry defeat Mayo, as I believe they will, then it will be Kerry v Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final. That will be a cracker.
MOYNIHAN
I expect the Kerry selectors to have a full deck to play with this weekend. They may well start Dara Moynihan, who was injured for the Munster final. The break should have helped him and he may come in at the expense of Spillane, or O’Brien. Dan O’Donoghue had a splendid league campaign and was sure to get the corner back berth for the championship until he got injured. Graham O’Sullivan has grabbed his chance and will most likely retain his place, but the Spa man is a real option as a sub. Do I think Kerry are beatable? Yes. Problem Area No. 1: How well can the rest of the team respond if marquee player David Clifford doesn’t start, has to come off injured, or is sent off? Uncharted waters. I believe that if he had not gone off injured against Tyrone last year, Kerry would have won the All-Ireland. Problem Scenario No. 2: Goals win matches especially highly competitive championship games. For all their possession in attack, this Kerry team has not delivered too many goals. Dublin do and it is a key point in their successes. Problem Scenario No. 3: The middle sector of this team has done well so far this year and deserve the plaudits. Geansaís 3, 6, 8 and 9 are sewed up. However, the wide open spaces of Croker and the fast summer conditions are a far cry from Inniskeen, Páirc UÍ Rinn or Austin Stack Park in winter/spring conditions. Let’s hope
Jack O’Connor will be aware of a possible banana skin slip-up, but I stick by Kerry because they have better natural forwards than Mayo.
57
24.06.2022 Kerry’s central spine won’t fall to pieces on Sunday next.
THE REAL MAYO
Are Mayo as poor as they showed in the league final? No. David Clifford ran riot that day. James Horan has to come up with a new marker and a new formula to curb the Fossa star. If this was the All-Ireland final, I would back Kerry, but at the quarter-final stage Mayo are capable of springing a surprise. Jack O’Connor will be aware of a possible banana skin slip-up, but I stick by Kerry because they have better natural forwards than Mayo. The Connacht side will depend on Cian O’Connor to score at least 1-6. Seán Ó’Shea will match O’Connor for free-taking and the rest will score enough to reach the semi-finals.
KERRY MINORS SET FOR SEMI-FINAL
There was only a point in it at the end, 0-8 to 1-4, when the Kerry minors defeated Tyrone in Portlaoise, but it is rare enough for Kerry football teams in any grade to defeat Tyrone. Think of Kerry’s many senior losses and that trend continued with the U20s last month. After that great Munster final win over Cork in Tralee, hopes were high that Kerry could win this in 2022. It came unstuck when Canavan Óg broke their hearts with match-winning scores from frees and from play, just like his father did so often with the Tyrone seniors. One hopes for better luck with the minors and manager James Costello deserves it all. They defeated Cork so easily in the earlier rounds and then were hammered by the Rebels second time round, 3-11 to 0-9. That made no sense and Costello’s charges showed their true selves in Laois where they surprised Tyrone 0-8 to 1-4. Just a single point in it and in low-scoring games the goal-scoring team usually wins out. Not so at O’Moore Park. How did they improve so much after the trouncing they got from Cork? Unpredictability of young players? Not so, in this case. It was more about the resilience and never-
say-die attitude of these U17 players. Costello also had a much stronger team available for the Tyrone match, with Ruairí Ferris, Colm Browne, Evan Boyle and Ódhran Ferris back after injuries. The latter was very unlucky not to be awarded a penalty early on but the referee ignored the Kerry protests. Kerry showed great resilience and overcame a 10-minute sin-binning of Niall Collins for a black card. They can also thank goalkeeper Shay O’Meara (Dr Crokes) for two match-winning saves from Tyrone’s Noah Grimes and Caolan Donnelly who seemed certain to score his second goal. Best of luck to the Kerry minors in the semi-final v Mayo tomorrow (Saturday) at 2.45pm in Tullamore. The match will be shown live on TG4.
SÉAMUS LOONEY AND FR MOSS O’CONNELL RIP
In a recent piece on sports injuries we recalled the exploits of Séamus Looney, that great all-rounder from Cork who won 10 All-Ireland medals in football and hurling. One of those was a senior hurling All-Ireland in 1970. A classmate of Dr Donal Kavanagh at UCC, Dr Séamus died recently aged 72. God rest his soul. This week we also remember Fr Moss O’Connell - Canon O’Connell to be more correct, but there was no ‘éirí in airde’ in this Abbeydorney native. Memories of Fr O’Connell take me back to my national school days in the Mon. I recall Brother Gerald teaching us mental arithmetic, which I liked, but no one could touch classmate Seán Clancy (brother of Risteárd) fear na Gaeilge. In September 1959 Kerry were training for the All-Ireland and Brother Gerald suspended the class for a few minutes, pointing out the Kerry players who were walking down New Road to morning mass at the Cathedral. They looked like giants to us. The Murphy brothers; the two Mickos from South Kerry, Lyons and Lyne; Tom Long; and Johnny Culloty of course. Moss O’Connell from Abbeydorney was one of those mighty men, but he was carrying an injury. Brother Gerald led the class in a brief prayer every morning so that Moss O’Connell would be recovered
I expect the Kerry selectors to have a full deck to play with this weekend. They may well start Dara Moynihan, who was injured for the Munster final.
from injury. He had played in all games in the 1959 championship but the speedy wing back was injured in the semi-final versus Dublin and had to be replaced by Tiger (Lyons), before coming back on for Dave Geaney. At that time Kerry stayed in the Park Place Hotel for two weeks full-time collective training under Dr Éamonn (O’Sullivan). They trained twice a day in the Park and attended daily mass. Moss O’Connell was named in the subs for the final when John Dowling captained Kerry to defeat Galway 3-7 to 1-4. A great friend of Johnny Culloty’s (they were classmates together in the Sem), Moss O‘Connell played with the Kerry minors in 1953, then the Kerry juniors and then the seniors, having starred in the Kerry SFC in 1957. He came on when Tom Moriarty broke his leg in the 1958 All-Ireland semi-final which Derry won 2-6 to 2-5. He also came on for the injured Kerry captain Mick O’Connell in the 1959 final, and won his All-Ireland medal. Moss was ordained in 1966 and was one of 50 Kerry priests in the diocese of Salford. How things have changed with the drop in vocations. He spent many years in the Reddish parish not far from Old Trafford and became a diehard Man Utd
supporter, as was Fr Seán Ahern (Firies) when he returned from Peru to the Salford diocese. They became great friends and mighty supporters of Kerry and of United. The hard-working Fr Moss was highly respected and loved by his parishioners. They will miss him dearly. His siblings included five nuns and one other priest, his brother Fr Tom (Australia). His sister Kit lives in Killarney. To all the extended O’Connell family, comhbhrón ó chroí. From one Kingdom Fr Moss served so well, to the eternal Kingdom he deserves. Slán abhaile agus beidh fáilte romhat.
AMBROSE AND TIM
For stay-at-home fans, the games will be screened on Sky Sports, but in these times of spiralling costs many people have ditched that expensive option and will be dependent on Ambrose and Tim to relay the action from Croke Park on Radio Kerry. This duo will offer a good option for those who will be unable to watch it on TV. So much for free-to-air after the decision by the powers that be in Croker to sell their souls to Sky. Principles go out the door when lucrative offers are made.

Top seed at stake as ladies host Westmeath The Kerry ladies can secure their spot in the last eight of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship – and a top seed to boot – with victory over Westmeath in Killarney on Saturday. Kerry got their All-Ireland series off to the perfect start when they defeated Connacht champions Galway a fortnight ago and a second win would see them top the pool. First and second in each of the four three-team groups advance with the third team dropping into the relegation playoffs. The Kingdom had to manoeuvre their way through those playoffs themselves last year but this time around they appear to be heading for the quarter-final stage. They won’t be taking anything for granted, although they will realistically be expected to beat a Westmeath team who fell to a 17-point loss to Galway last weekend. Tracey Leonard and Olivia Divilly (0-5 each) did the bulk of the scoring for the Tribeswomen in Tuam as Siobhán Divilly chipped in with 1-1 from midfield. Sarah Dillon was Westmeath’s only scorer on the day. Her four points came from frees.

ALL-IRELAND SFC GROUP C
_________________________________________________________________________
Kerry v Westmeath Saturday at 1pm Fitzgerald Stadium That result leaves Galway and Kerry level on three points apiece so The Kingdom need only draw in this final group game to secure the top spot. Finishing first is certainly preferrable as it means avoiding the biggest of the big guns in the next round. Looking at the other pools, the winners of Dublin and Mayo will top Group A, Armagh need to run up a big score to overtake Meath at summit of Group B, and Cork will be the first seed in Group D if they overcome the challenge of neighbours Waterford. Kerry’s focus for now will be on Westmeath. Get the job done here in Killarney and they can start to dream of another big day out in Croker. Away from the pitch, there were further developments – or further comments at least – regarding the Centre of Excellence controversy. Speaking at a press event for AIG, Kerry player Aishling O’Connell revealed that the ladies were still not training at the facility, despite Kerry GAA previously stating that they were working with Kerry LGFA to resolve the issue.
BIG LEAGUE: St Mary's player Emma Costello drives to the basket during a Super League match against Carlow IT last season.
Mary’s respond to claims about disbanded team St Mary’s Basketball Club Castleisland have refuted claims made by their former Super League coach surrounding the sudden disbanding of the team. When the club decided to pull its Super League side citing a lack of numbers, coach Liam Culloty responded with a statement on Twitter saying that he and his players were “shocked and disappointed” with the move. "Currently we have eight Irish players from around the county fully committed to playing Super League and we had hoped with the addition of one or two professional players along with some of the fantastic underage talent emerging in the county that we would have a squad more than capable of competing,” Culloty said. "Alas, we were never given this opportunity to recruit further players to the squad." Culloty also expressed his dismay that he and his players were notified by text message. "[There was] no effort made to meet the players and management informing them of the decision before it was released to the media on Saturday. The very least we felt we deserved was the opportunity to fight our corner and see could a solution be found to allow the team to stay in the league." The club issued another statement this week refuting some of Culloty’s claims, while also apologising for the manner in which the decision was communicated. “Contrary to what is being portrayed by the statement on Twitter, St Mary’s is a local club and not a county set-up, i.e.
not a Kerry team. It would appear from reading the statement that the coach had an ambition for this to be a Kerry set-up, yet this was something that was never brought up for discussion with St Mary’s who were financing the team. “We are a club team, our first loyalties are to our club and club members. While we are, and always have been in the past, happy to welcome link players in, at no time during recent discussions had any individual player from any part of the county expressed to the club an interest to link or indeed transfer for next season. Conversations had been had with the coach regarding player numbers, the opportunity to recruit has been there since the end of the 2021/22 season. “A phone call to the coach to inform him of the decision that had been made not to continue in Super League was placed on Friday, June 10. The call went unanswered and was not returned, due to the approaching Basketball Ireland deadline a text message was then sent. However, prior to this, the coach had been aware and involved in discussions and several club meetings were held around the issue. “The club does regret that players were made aware of the decision by text message. The message thanked players for their dedication over the years and apologised that players were not being met in person. A committee member also phoned all players the following day. “Team members have since been contacted again, apologised to for being told by text and have been given the opportunity to meet face to face if they wish.”

With the win over Rathmore almost guaranteeing Division 1 status next year the focus will be to build on the good form with the Intermediate Championship on the horizon. The Senior B team are also in action Saturday evening when Dingle B make their way to Killarney. Throw in for this one is also 7pm. JUVENILE BOYS: The U11 Boys had a particularly busy week with their highlight being involved in the Dylan Crowley Tournament, which was a huge success in Gneeveguilla last Saturday. A big bualadh bos to Sean the Bear O'Sullivan and his committee for the fantastic job they did after a 3 year Covid enforced absence. Our lads were in the same pool as Gneeveguilla, Currow and Kilgarvan and we made the final where we faced Currow. Having visited them in the Go Games only 48 hours previously again
there wasn't much between the sides but it was Currow who emerged victorious. The lads will have enjoyed the experience of playing different oppositions all on the one day and gave their all. It was a privilege for them to be involved and remember Dylan in the best possible way.

Dr Crokes GAA DIV 3 HURLING Dr Crokes 1-06 St. Brendan’s 2-15. Our second team met St Brendan’s on Friday evening in the Division 3 league final in Caherslee. We were well in the game, just two points behind, up to the half time break but following a red card given to one of our better and more experienced players early in the second half our well supported opponents upped their game and put us to the sword with a final score line of St Brendan's 2-15 Dr Crokes 1-06. Still, a good learning experience for our lads who now look forward to the Junior Championship. Great to see a father and son, Paul and Brandon Griffin playing with us in the game. Brandon was one of our better performers on the night and another player, Joe McCann, who recently transferred to us from the hurling stronghold of County Louth gave a fine performance as well. Congratulations to our very sporting opponents on their fine win. U13: Our U13 boys put on a great display of skills with a big win over Kenmare Shamrocks at home last Wednesday evening. Dr Crokes B 3-11 Kenmare Shamrocks B 0-05. They have now qualified for the final. U12 GIRLS: Our U12 girls were in action last Tuesday evening against a very strong Kilcummin side in the county league. After a great battle Kilcummin deservedly took the spoils. We were delighted with our girls who are continuing to show huge improvements since the beginning of the season. There is a bright future for these hard working enthusiastic ladies! Well done.

A NIGHT WITH LEGENDS: July 5, anyone needing tickets please ring/text James on 086 8151852, Dermot 086 8413190 or any committee member. Tickets €25 each. DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE: Fossa 1-15 St Mary’s 1-12. U14 GIRLS: Division 1 County League Rd 4. Another great game this, Fossa were at it from the start and played a high tempo, hard running game which ISG struggled to contain, Fossa created many chances and went in at the break up 3-9 v 2-2. On a very warm night after the 1st half whirlwind some tired
Fossa players took to the field at the restart. This was a much more dour affair with very few scores. A lot of effort was needed to keep ISG out, and the game was there for the team who could keep going. While it wasn’t the 2nd half the score at the break suggested it was Fossa who did enough to secure the win 3-13 v 4-4. Another great result for these hard working girls as Fossa keep rolling on. ACADEMY: A busy Sunday morning academy for our U8 and U10 Girls. Our girls welcomed Legion, Miltown to Fossa. Plenty of effort and fine play shown by all in the challenge games this morning. Thanks to Miltown and Legion for visiting. U13: Our boys had a great challenge match GGC in Cromane on Thursday evening. Great skill, passion and determination on display. Thanks to GGC for the warm welcome.

DYLAN CROWLEY MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT: Glenflesk U11s performed brilliantly last Saturday in Gneevguilla, in the Dylan Crowley Memorial Tournament. Placed in a group with Firies, Cordal and Listry, they beat Cordal in the opening game, lost to Firies in the second, and beat Listry in their third. This placed them in second place in the group. This meant another showdown with Listry in the semifinal. This was the game of the day. Listry got off to a fast start with two first half goals. Glenflesk fought back well in the second half, and at the end of 20 minute’s the sides couldn’t be separated. Early goals for each side meant that the result went down to the last kick. Glenflesk were awarded a last minute free, which was brilliantly converted, giving them a place in the final. Firies were the opponents in the final. After a close first half, Firies held a one point lead. They pushed on in the second half for a deserved victory. The Glenflesk team still got medals for their outstanding performance, and their semifinal win will live long in the memory. Congratulations to the team and mentors on their heroic efforts today. Report by Michael Healy.

Our lads played with the aid of a strong breeze in the opening half and led 1-7 to 0-3 at half-time with the goal coming from Conor Spillane. Waterville however came storming back into the contest in the second half and raised two green flags on route to a narrow
one point win, 2-10 to 1-12. Hard luck to our lads who have put in a very good effort throughout the competition, winning two games and unlucky to lose two other games by a solitary point.
