Niall Kelleher elected new Mayor of Killarney Councillor Niall Kelleher has been elected the new Mayor/Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District (KMD) and one of his key priorties will be to progress work on the Killarney Bypass. | By Michelle Crean The Fianna Fáil councillor, who was up against Cllr Donal Grady to become the town's First Citizen, was voted in during the Annual General Meeting of the KMD held in County Buildings on Monday. Kelleher replaces Labour Cllr Marie Moloney who held the role for the past year for the Killarney Municipal District. Councillors also elected Cllr John O'Donoghue (Independent) as Deputy Mayor/Leas Cathaoirleach for the Killarney Municipal District. In her outgoing speech, Cllr Moloney praised her Council colleagues, groups she worked with and her family for their support over the past year. “It has been an absolute honour and privilege to have been elected Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District and to act as mayor of a town I love so much," she said. She added that she was proud of honouring two women during her term as may-

or, Hannah Carey and Janie McCarthy, by unveiling plaques in the town. She thanked the numerous organisations she has worked with; the 4th of July, Christmas in Killarney, St Patrick’s Day, Wander Wild, Rally of the Lakes, and groups such as the Soroptimists, the Rotary Club and Killarney Chamber. “The respect that was shown to the office of mayor and to me personally was second to none. I want to say a sincere thanks to all the organisations I have worked with and participated with over
the past year."
INCOMING MAYOR Incoming mayor, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said that he had a number of key priorities for the year ahead including progressing works on the Killarney Bypass. "I want to see work started and significant progress made during my 12 month term as mayor and the sooner the better," he said. "I know that this is an aspiration shared by all my colleagues and indeed officials
present. The message going out here today is "let's get the job done and let's get it done now." Another of his ambitions, which he said he tabled as a motion last March, is to have the "magnificent" 12th century Annals of Inisfallen returned to Killarney "where they belong". He said a renewed effort should be made to have the "priceless" Annals returned and he intends to set up a working group to liaise with the library in Oxford University where the Annals are currently housed. "It would be an enormous privilege and economic boost to Killarney "even for the summer months". "My promise to the people of Killarney - if it can be done, it will be done." Litter is another issue he plans to focus on from introducing a coffee cup levy to an urgent focus on discarding of cigarette butts. Looking forward for the year, he said that he fully intends to reintroduce the Mayor's Ball to raise "much needed" funds for local charities. "I think it is a wonderful opportunity for us all and the community to gather together in a social setting to enjoy some laughs, get in a dance or two and support deserving causes. "The only guarantee I will give you at this stage is that after two years of what we've been through, it certainly will not be a masked ball." He added that he has six months left as his current position as President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, but that his "absolute priority" will be to represent the people of Killarney "to the best of my ability". Council colleagues congratulated him on his new role saying that his priorities are "ambitious" and "achievable" but that he has the experience to see them through.
Major investment for Holy Cross Mercy School | By Michelle Crean An ambitious state-of-the-art building project, which will include four new special education classrooms, has been announced for Holy Cross Mercy School Killarney. Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley made the announcement on Wednesday. The building project will deliver the new modern classrooms tailored for the provision of special education. As part of the major additional accommodation programme four new special education teaching rooms will be created while two rooms to deliver English
as an additional language will be created from two existing classrooms. A withdrawal room and an additional bathroom are also included in the plans. “I am delighted to announce this significant building project which will provide state-of-the-art facilities and further enhance the provision of special education at Holy Cross Mercy School in Killarney," Minister Foley said. “This major building project is an endorsement of the school community at Holy Cross for their tireless commitment, passion and endeavour to providing inclusive education to the young people of Killarney and surrounding areas and I look forward to this project continuing at pace.”

TV STAR: Paul Flynn pictured discussing food with chef Chad Byrne on RTÉ's ‘Paul Flynn’s Food Truck Favourites’.
Take Two: RTÉ shows to feature talented local men Killarney viewers will have to do a double take next Wednesday evening as not one - but two - local men are to feature on two separate TV programmes. | By Sean Moriarty The Brehon's Head Chef Chad Byrne, who also owns the Hungry Donkey food truck, is to feature in the first episode of a new six part series called ‘Paul Flynn’s Food Truck Favourites’. TV chef Flynn kicks off his first food truck adventure with a search for street food featuring lamb and takes a trip to Killarney to meet Chad and check out his business. “He heard about us during lockdown and made contact,” Chad told the Killarney Advertiser “We are only doing pop-ups now, but every time we do one we have queues and queues of people. To feature on Paul’s show is a huge endorsement to what we do.” Separately it'll be lights, camera and action for James Flynn as he will be on ‘Nationwide’ with presenters Anne Cassin and Blathnaid Ní Chofaigh running a feature on his efforts to keep the tradition of manufacturing and restorating Arbutus furniture alive in the region. In October 2020 the Ross Road man discovered a games table for sale in Boston. The rare piece of handcrafted furniture, that dates from just after the famine era, was returned to Killarney in March last year by Mr Flynn. The Arbutus Tree, sometimes called the Killarney Strawberry Tree, is more prevalent in Killarney National Park than any other region in the country. James, a former ESB district supervisor for South Kerry, has, since his retirement, devoted his time to tracing the history

of Killarney’s Arbutus furniture industry and restores pieces that he finds in online auctions all over the world. Wednesday’s ‘Nationwide’ programme will feature handcrafters from all over Ireland and will include around seven minutes with James. “I took the production crew on a tour of Muckross House, we visited Paddy Connor’s antique shop in Lissivigeen,” James told the Killarney Advertiser. “I brought them up the Moll’s Gap road, just above the tunnel there is an Arbutus tree with a protective fence to keep the deer out.” 'Nationwide' will air at 7pm while 'Food Truck Favourites' will be on at 8pm, both on RTÉ ONE.
Vincent family to be interred together at Muckross The ashes of Elisabeth Vincent will be interred next to her husband Billy Vincent's at Killegy Cemetery, Muckross on July 11 at 5pm. The Vincent family gifted Muckross House and Gardens to the people of Ireland. “The Vincent links with Ireland are well known. In 1932 Arthur Rose Vincent and his father-in-law William Bowers Bourn presented Muckross and 11,000 acres to the people of Ireland as our first National Park. From the mid-70s to the mid-90s Elisabeth spent most summers in Dromkerry near Killarney with her family and grandchildren,” explained local historian and broadcaster Frank Lewis. Born in Paris on April 29, 1921 Mrs
Vincent celebrated her 100th birthday in 2021 in Monaco. She died on July 2, last year. The eldest of three daughters, she was educated in France and in England, and worked in the fashion world in Paris. After marrying Arthur William Bourn Vincent in 1952 Elisabeth moved to San Francisco. In addition to an active social life, she started and headed for several years a haute couture house in San Francisco. Later she turned to painting in her San Francisco studio. Her works of an avant-garde and partly abstract style have rarely been exhibited publicly. Most remained in her possession.
Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme moves a step closer to reality | By Sean Moriarty The long-awaited Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme has overcome its final stumbling block and should get the go ahead in the coming weeks. The project was delayed as both Irish Water and local landowners engaged with each other. Kerry County Council engineer John Breen has confirmed to local councillor Brendan Cronin that the land acquisition issue has been resolved. "I wish to welcome the news issued in Thursday’s water services report that all necessary land has now been acquired by Irish Water for the construc-
tion of the long awaited Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme,” Cllr Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser. “This is a positive step as Mr John Breen, Director of Environmental Services confirmed to me that, there is now no requirement to proceed with the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) process as agreement has been reached between Irish Water and the relevant landowner. “Importantly the removal of the requirement of a contentious CPO should clear the way for Irish Water to proceed as soon as possible to procure a contractor to finally begin this vitally important project for Kilcummin."

Over 50 new jobs at Hilliard’s as new Killarney business opens One of the most iconic and distinguished retail brands in Killarney’s long and proud commercial history is to be revived as part of an exciting new business venture due to open its doors in the coming days. Hilliard’s – the name chosen for a vibrant new restaurant and cocktail bar on 6/7 Main Street – will have huge significance for a whole generation of people in Killarney given the major influence the Hilliard family had in the area for well over a century and a half. The official opening has been planned for Friday, July 8 but there is some suggestion of a sneak-peak this coming weekend.
The unveiling of the back to the future brand is particularly appropriate given that the new development, undertaken by the Sheahan Group, located on the exact site of the former R Hilliard and Sons department store which remains a landmark building on the town’s main retail thoroughfare. The new venture will bring the number of people employed by the Sheahan Group to over 500 with more than 50 new jobs
being created at Hilliard’s. Members of the Hilliard family are thrilled that the name and building will again become central to the commercial life of Killarney town. The House of Hilliard, established in 1848, is synonymous with enduring quality, craftsmanship and style. For 148 years, Hilliard’s traded as a department store, attracting well-heeled shoppers to sample an unrivalled selection of fine, handmade wares, from haberdashery to drapery and footwear. The thread of masterful crafting will be sewn through the new Hilliard’s experience, from signature cocktails and small plates to delicious mains, comprising
the freshest local ingredients, in a space thoughtfully designed to be welcoming and inviting. Hilliard’s today, as before, has a family business at its core. The new team will be led by executive chef Diarmuid Murphy, head chef Rory Gabriel, mixologist Ariel Sanecki and operations manager Siobhan Whelan. The striking feature original sign at the top of the building’s exterior, dating back to 1917, has been painstakingly restored by master craftsmen to ensure the business remains true to its roots at the beating heart of Killarney town. Originally commissioned by John Hilliard, who consulted with the Irish language department in UCC, it was the first Irish language façade in Killarney and the first use of the word ‘Teoranta’ on any sign of its kind on a shopfront. Hilliard’s, the stylish elder sister of JM Reidys, will add significantly to Main Street’s rich and colourful history while ensuring a bright future.

"Government is failing Lymes disease sufferers" - claims councillor | By Michelle Crean A local councillor has been left angered by the Health Minister's comments claiming there was no need for people to travel abroad for Lymes Disease testing or treatment.
A BEADY IDEA: Sadbh O’Halloran, Kilcummin National School with Brilliant Beads, the JEP business developed by Fifth and Sixth class.
Sadbh's arty idea wins Bright Spark Award
A 12-year-old's business idea was a winner in this year's Junior Entrepreneur Programme (JEP) as she scooped the Bright Spark Award. | By Michelle Crean Sixth Class pupil Sadbh O’Halloran, who has just finished in Kilcummin National School, came up with the Pebble Art project. Sadbh creates beautiful, original pieces of art using pebbles and other natural materials and gives her unique pieces as gifts to family and friends for special occasions. The Bright Spark award recognises the creativity of individual pupils who pitch novel ideas at the idea generation stage of JEP. Nine thousand children from three hundred primary schools nationally launched start-up businesses as part of JEP. The pupils combined their innate creativity with the skills they developed on the programme to create original products and launch businesses ranging from board games to storybooks to high-end craft
and educational products. "We are very proud of all her achievements and we wish her well as she starts the next chapter in her education at secondary school," Principal of Kilcummin NS Gillian Sheehan told the Killarney Advertiser. "We will miss Sadbh and we look forward to hearing about the very bright future that lies ahead of this 'Bright Spark'! Brilliant Beads was another successful project, undertaken by Mr Murphy’s Fifth and Sixth Class and SNA, Margaret Nagle O’Neil. The children designed and created customised bracelets, as their JEP business idea. Sadbh was also separately awarded the joint Garda Blitz Player of the Tournament trophy, a great achievement as this is the first time that the award was presented to female players.
Flesk Fest promises to be a great evening of fun | By Michelle Crean Glenflesk GAA are planning a fun filled evening of top class entertainment. Flesk Fest takes place on Saturday July 16 at 4pm in The Kerryway Steakhouse & Bar. Two exciting bands 'All Folk’d Up' and 'Super Ceili' will be playing and there'll be plenty of fun and games and a delicious barbecue, raffle with some
great prizes, and of course the ever popular Hang Tough Challenge! "Please come out and support this great event! Tell your friends and we will make it a night to remember," Seamus Healy from Glenflesk GAA said. "Admission is only €15, and tickets are available from Mary McCarrick 087 7750773, Padraig O'Sullivan 087 0530384 or any club officer. They are also available in the Kerryway on the night.
In a letter to Kerry County Council in March, Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, said that “there is no need for Irish residents to travel to other countries for diagnosis or treatment”. However, his words have hit a sour note with Killarney Municipal District councillor Maura Healy Rae who has called on the Council at its meeting last week to write to the Minister asking if the current testing in Ireland at present can diagnose chronic Lyme Disease. The Independent councillor, who has been actively campaigning for support especially for chronic cases of the disease, said his remarks have angered Lymes sufferers, many who have had no option but to go abroad to seek help. One such case is St Brendan's College teacher Karin O'Shea who lives in Kilgarvan who raised over €66,000 via GoFundMe to help pay for her vital life-changing treatment in Germany. "The Minister’s response has not only angered Lymes sufferers, their family and friends who are most aware of their debilitating symptoms, it also displays either a lack of understanding of chronic Lymes Disease on the Minister’s part or a refusal on the part of the Department of Health to acknowledge the inadequacies in relation to diagnosis and treatment offered to Lymes sufferers in this country," Cllr Maura Healy Rae said. "The testing in Ireland currently, is able to diagnose those who have been recently infected but not those who have become infected over a long period of time. The Irish tests test for antibodies. People with chronic Lymes Disease have suppressed immune systems; their bod-
ANGERED: Cllr Maura Healy Rae has been angered by the Health Minister's comments.
ies often won’t produce any antibodies, therefore the test will show up negative for Lymes. This explains why so many people have been misdiagnosed with other diseases such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, and Fibromyalgia." The German tests - which costs €1,000, with intensive treatment in the region of €40,000 and the post treatment medication €500 a month - test the cells for the presence or previous presence of Lymes and therefore, is a more effective test, she added. "The treatment currently available in Ireland is in antibiotic form and is effective for those who have been recently infected and before the disease has taken chronic hold. The intensive treatment needed for chronic Lymes sufferers is not available in Ireland. "Really and truly, why does the Minister think any person would subject themselves to such intensive treatment at such an enormous cost abroad if they didn’t believe it to be necessary and critical to them in having any quality of life and to tackle their severe symptoms? In my view, the Minister’s response shows immense arrogance as it implies he knows better than a sufferer of Lymes."

Little Garda heroes light up the town
The VIPs got a chance to tag along with their big blue heroes with a special Parade of the Nations from the Gleneagle Hotel down Main Street and through High Street up to Cleeny Roundabout and back to Gleneagle via Port Road and
Mission Road with local Gardai and veteran police officers from 29 countries who are in Killarney as part of the Blue Knights International Convention. It was all part of a special event the Blue Knights organised in association with An Garda Síochána and children's charity Little Blue Heroes who make youngsters
undergoing health issues honorary Gardai and treat them to specially sized uniforms and days out. Some of the local children involved included Frankie O'Sullivan from Killarney town who is in remission following a battle with Leukaemia, Alexis O'Mahony from Woodlawn who suffers from Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Deficiency (PDHD), and Alannah Foley from Killorglin who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer, as well as other young members of the force from across the
county. And special guest was comedian Pat Shortt who helped get the parade going at the Gleneagle. "Pat Shortt detailed, or gave instructions to, the children, then we put all the children and their families into the seven patrol cars and on the seven motorbikes fitted with car seats," Garda Gillian Mac Eoin told the Killarney Advertiser. "We made lots of noise in the parade and the kids absolutely loved it, they were doing the sirens through town. We think the Gardai enjoyed the parade more than the kids!" Back at the hotel Alannah, Frankie and Sean Kearney from Ardfert were thrilled to be presented with fully electric kids mini Garda bikes. "Seeing them on their bikes was the highlight of the day for me!" One special Little Blue Hero Kate Lehane from Ballycasheen was in Dublin and unfortunately couldn't attend on the day.

BELGIUM BOUND: Sam Bolger will race in Belgium later this year.
Rising cycling star selected for Belgium Project
Killarney cyclist Sam Bolger (18) has been selected as one of four riders for the Belgian Project – one of the most prestigious stepping stones for Irish riders with ambitions to turn professional. | By Sean Moriarty Northern Ireland-based Belgian Danny Blondell is the man behind the project. For the last 15 years Blondell selects between four and six Irish riders and sends them to Belgium where they stay with local families and contest pro and semi-pro races. As a race commentator Blondell is well placed to decide who is deserving of inclusion in the project. Over the first six months of the year he makes decisions while attending early season races. Those lucky enough to get selected go to live and race in Belgium for the sec-
ond six months of the year. Bolger, from Lewis Road, was selected after winning the junior race in the Cycling Ireland National Road Series in Mayo in March and the Orwell Stage Race in County Wicklow in June. “He is delighted, it is a very big deal,” his father Paul told the Killarney Advertiser. “He has had a very good year and the wins in Mayo and Wicklow secured the Belgium Project.” Bolger will head to Belgium in late July and after to the Junior Tour of Ireland which takes place in County Clare between July 12 and 17.

Kerry greats like Pat Spillane, Mike Frank Russell, Paul Galvin and Eamon Fitzmaurice will be joined on stage by Dublin hero Bernard Brogan Sr. Killarney greats Colm 'Gooch' Cooper and Ambrose O’Donovan will also be there. “This is not going to be a boring night, it is going to be filled with fun and banter, music and craic,” Fossa GAA chairman, Dermot Clifford, told the Killarney Advertiser. Several raffle and auction prizes are up
for grabs on the night too, the most unusual being a chance to bid on a racing greyhound, donated by the Murphy Family from Brosna. The fundraiser has already raised €10,000 thanks to a recent auction organised by Paul Nagle. The local rally star sold one of his world championship helmets for €25,000 with the balance going to Recovery Haven in Tralee. Limited tickets are still available at a cost of €25 per person or groups can buy a table of 12 for €250. Ticket enquires: nightoflegends2022@ gmail.com.
Over the past number of months, the hospital had re-instated visiting arrangements on a safe and structured basis in recognition of the importance of visiting for patients and their families. However, COVID cases are on the rise with the 14 day incidence for Kerry currently trending at 430.6. The consequence of this high incidence rate is that UHK has a significantly increased number of COVID-19 inpatients at the hospital along with a high level of emergency presentations. UHK Management say they have taken the difficult decision to revise visiting arrangements in order to protect patients, their relatives and staff.

One in five Ukrainians in Ireland have already found work One in five Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in Ireland since the war broke out have already found employment, while almost two thirds of the remainder are actively looking for work. | By Natalya Krasnenkova This is one of the principle findings of the inaugural survey of Ukrainian refugees carried out by Ukrainian Action In Ireland (UACT), a registered non-profit committed to supporting Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees. It was established by a group of Ukrainian and Irish volunteers united by the idea to help Ukraine and Ukrainians in the times of the war and beyond. Their main mission is to be the voice and action for Ukrainians in Ireland, to provide humanitarian support to Ukraine, and to show and promote a positive image of modern Ukraine in Ireland.
SURVEY
The main purpose of the survey is to give a voice to Ukrainians fleeing the war and to learn about the main challenges they face. Some 2,191 adult Ukrainian refugees living in the Republic of Ireland were surveyed. “It is important for UACT to understand the real pains and problems of Ukrainians from people directly," Olena Redrugina, a co-founder of UACT, said. "We understand that many Ukraini-
ans are spread across Ireland, and this survey allowed us to reach out to the most remote locations. This is our first survey, which gave us lots of unexpected insights. It triggered many new ideas and insights within UACT and we hope this information will be of use to everyone involved.” Of those who have found work, only 5% have found a job matching their professional qualifications. Two out of every five (38%) refugees looking for a job do not have a bank account/card. Mothers face the greatest difficulties finding employment. Although 20% of mothers have found jobs and 43% are actively looking, 22% are unable to work because of child commitments or health conditions.
LANGUAGE BARRIER
One of the biggest issues facing Ukrainian refugees in accessing lan-
guage courses, with almost half of all respondents speaking little or no English and 63% experiencing a language barrier in their search for a job. More than half of Ukrainians are studying English by themselves using online resources. 40% of them are attending English classes in person. Most respondents are happy with the provided education. However, frequent relocation is affecting and interrupting language studies. Respondents expressed a strong desire to have more conversational practice and more frequency of classes (more than once per week). With most of the courses oriented towards the unemployed, those who have found jobs struggle to find education outside of working hours.
GRATITUDE
90% of Ukrainians expressed deep
gratitude to the Irish Government and the Irish people for being able to live in safety. Almost two-thirds of Ukrainians are willing to actively contribute to the economy of Ireland, and half of the displaced are actively looking for a job and actively studying English.
ACCESS TO SERVICES
Most of the Ukrainian refugee respondents said they did not have issues with services and are satisfied overall. Over 90% are highly satisfied with how they were granted Temporary Protection and a PPS Number. On the other hand, 37% have not received a Medical Card and have issues finding a GP. Some 70% of Ukrainians have not received a bank card. Only 3% exchanged their Ukrainian driving license for an Irish one.
О 20.00 годинний живий Beat on the Street та шоу фейерверків.
Квитки на події під відкритим небом на галявинах Killarney House and Gardens, включаючи Soul in the Park і фільму на великому екрані «The Greatest Showman», будуть безкоштовними і вже доступні на Eventbrite.ie Святкування Дня Незалежності США в Кілларні організовує Туристично-торговельна палата Кілларні за великої підтримки Ради округу Керрі та Fáilte Ireland, а також спонсорів Heineken.

THE KILLARNEY ADVERTISER SAYS Our journalist SEAN MORIARTY shares his thoughts on the week's news
Avoid Dublin Airport at all costs: advice from a seasoned traveller
Free Spraoi Chiarraí concerts taking place this summer | By Michelle Crean Traditional music, song and dance, storytelling and performance will be at the heart of free live concerts this summer. Spraoi Chiarraí concerts, which have had great success over the last 17 summers, will run at St Mary’s Church of Ireland and outdoors at Killarney House and Gardens. This Kerry based youth, Irish Folk and Traditional music, song and dance, storytelling, mentorship, performance collective, presents the finest of young local talent offering them valuable rare exposure and experience, in two historic, high profile, concert settings. After Saturday's first successful performance further summer dates include July 23, August 6 at 8pm, August 13 at 2pm, and August 24 and 27 at 8pm. At the end of August, a concert will feature sisters Noleen and Grace Angland (Glenflesk) who start off with flute, fiddle and piano. Their mom is well known fiddler Martina O’Neill. They will be joined by Tim O’Shea Director/Producer, himself a professional folk musician for decades. Open to all, this family entertainment is sponsored this year by the Kerry County Council Arts Office Arts and Community Support Funds, Killarney Chamber of Commerce who made it possible and
offer increased support and promotion, and Kerry Gems Publishing. "The concerts feature fiddle, Irish harp, accordion, flute and whistle, Irish Uilleann Pipes, guitar, harmonica, Bodhrán and vocals as well as Irish dancing and storytelling outdoors," Tim said. "All indoor concerts are at 8pm and outdoor performances are at 2pm." This year the group have also been asked to perform again at Puck Fair in August. "All shows are free so come along, families welcome. The aims of Spraoi ChiarraÍ are to showcase our local young Irish traditional talent, to mentor and provide a platform for young performers to experience a real concert in a high profile setting, to hone their performance skills and work in a team with a sense of ownership of the performance, to celebrate local traditional performance culture of the South West of Ireland, to offer a free, quality, family, cultural experience for locals and visitors to Killarney over the summer months and to open up new, quality venues in Kerry, for Irish traditional performance. "Our “in concert" indoor show features a three piece traditional band," he said. "Our “round the house” outdoor show features a three piece band, eight young set dancers and a live storyteller (Seanchai). Be sure to catch our finest traditional performers for free. Hope to see you there."
Holiday season is in full swing and many locals are preparing for their first trip abroad since before the pandemic. This advice might come a little too late for summer 2022 but it is best to avoid Dublin Airport at all costs. Figures released by Dublin Airport say it has flights to almost 200 destinations in 43 countries, operated by 53 airlines and is the 11th busiest airport in the European Union. It does not take a mathematician to work out that that is a lot of people to manage every day. There are many workarounds; Cork Airport offers connections to Heathrow, Paris and Schiphol, three of the busiest airports in Europe so connections to almost any popular destination is possible. There are large amounts of American tourists arriving in Killarney this way and they are also avoiding the long and tedious drive from Dublin to the Kingdom. Recent experiences at Schiphol confirms that there is far less time lost milling around Amsterdam’s main airport than spent in unnecessary queues in Dublin. Don’t forget our own little airport in Farranfore either. Why not use Kerry Airport to bounce onwards via Luton or Stansted – the only issue here is all Ryanair flights are considered as individual trips and it is not possible to check bags right through to final destinations at the departure airport. Passengers will have to collect their bags and exit the arrival halls before
re-checking in for the next leg of the journey. And for that very reason alone, do not use Manchester as a connecting airport – it is equally as bad there as it is in Dublin. One seldom explored option is to book a courier to take your baggage direct from your home to your hotel and back – this can sometimes be cheaper than airline fees and passengers have the advantage of going luggage free from home to final destination – that has to be a good thing. Recent news that Ryanair passengers, on the Kerry-Dublin flight, no longer have to exit, but can instead go straight to departures via an internal stairs system is almost good news. It only applies to hand luggage-only passengers and those with checked in bags will have to get to bag-drop in departures concourse putting them slap bang in the middle of the Dublin Airport melee. News that the Army have been drafted in to help alleviate queues at Dublin Airport is not the great news it is made out to be – the Army will manage the queues but will not solve the cause of why they are there in the first place. Of course, the ultimate solution is for the Government and the Dublin Airport Authority to share out some its flights to the smaller regional airports. Over 320 flights a day use Dublin Airport - Kerry Airport serves seven different locations – it is time to change this anomaly for the good our tourism industry, the country’s reputation and to reduce stress levels of the travelling public and Dublin Airport staff.

Coffee morning remembers Denis P Counihan
A much loved member of the community, businessman Denis P Counihan was remembered last week during a fundraiser in his memory. | By Michelle Crean
Family, neighbours, friends, as well as those from the business community joined his wife Mabel and children Michelle, Kieran and Mike, in the International Hotel coffee morning. Support was immense as so far the Riverside Drive family who have raised €4,700 for Comfort for Chemo Kerry. Denis, who along with his wife and son Kieran ran Fine Designs in Park Road, sadly passed away on May 20 last year after being diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer. He was aged 64. His family wanted to do something to honour his memory and help a local charity at the same time. "It was the first coffee morning we held in his memory and we said we'd do it for a local charity," Mabel told the Killarney Advertiser.
"It was incredibly busy. Thanks to the International Hotel for hosting the event. They have been absolutely wonderful to us, they couldn't have been nicer to us. We really appreciate everything. Everyone, friends, family neighbours and business people we have dealt with over the years, were absolutely wonderful. Thank you also to Killarney Cardiac Response Unit for their support especially to me personally. Without everyone's help it wouldn't have happened." She added a huge thank you also to Colin Baker and The Trustees of Muckross House who donated a whole array of beautiful cakes, scones, and pastries for the coffee morning. "We, as a family, are delighted that all the funds raised will now stay in the county, and patients and families of Kerry will benefit from them."

The importance of sun protection SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and is a measure of how well protected the skin is from UV rays every day of the year not just summer months. The main propose of sunscreen is to protect you from UVA and UVB rays, but also from IR, infrared radiation. This comes from computer screens and phones, amongst other things, and I'm mentioning these as we use them everyday. If you spend money on face creams and having facials, you will understand that to get the full package/results, just how important it is to wear sunscreen. Don't panic, it's never too late to start. Everyone is on a mission for younger, healthier, glowing skin, male and female. It stands to reason that you must wear SPF. Sun can damage the skin's lower levels if burnt; think of it like a hot water burn. The skin has to work on repairing the damage, instead of maintaining anti-ageing and optimum hydration levels. It takes time to get the right hydration levels back after sunburn as this can cause irreversible skin damage such as early ageing and worst of all, skin cancer. UVC rays are the most dangerous to us,
but natural UVC never gets through the ozone layer, thankfully. UVB rays penetrate the outside layer of our skin, but UVA rays have the potential to penetrate multiple layers. I am asked all the time about the car widow when driving, can the sun get in? Yes, contrary to popular belief, you should wear sunscreen inside as well as outside especially if you are farming or driving for a living. Truck/taxi drivers have said they feel their skin nearest the window has aged or is much drier than the other side as UV rays can penetrate through glass and reach your skin. The best way to make sure your skin is protected from the sun 24/7 is to put on sunscreen everyday. To make sure that your skin is protected throughout the day reapply it every two hours. The reason is that all humans sweat. All humans have dirt on their faces and this can dilute the SPF that you apply. If you wear sunscreen all the time your skin will be safe. Always use a separate sunscreen to your moisturiser or make-up as this is the only way you can be sure that you have the correct amount of SPF on. If you have any beauty questions call Jill on 064 6632966.

Natalia joins the team at Expose | By Michelle Crean There's a new face at Expose Beauty Lounge as the business has welcomed Natalia Vydysh to their salon in Tralee.
WELCOME: Ukrainian Natalia Vydysh has joined the team at Expose Beauty Lounge.
The 25-year-old, who arrived to Ireland in April, was born in Zaporizka, Ukriane and is a highly skilled Permanent Artist specialising in brows and lips. For the last three years she had lived in Kiev which gave her a lot of opportunities and ability to improve her beauty skills. "During the first few months of the war I was living in Ukraine but I had to move to a more safe place," Natalia told the Killarney Advertiser.
"First what I feel is really huge pain. I left my country but my relatives and heart stayed in Ukraine. Of course, I’m really worried about them. Ukraine is under heavy shelling every day. Unfortunately, I had no choice." Natalia has also been doing make-up for five years and has taken part in several fashion shows and worked on various TV channels. Since joining Expose, clients have been very impressed with Natalia and she is already booked out. "Sure, I’m happy, that now I’m in such beautiful place like Kerry. I think that it’s the most awesome county. I was very surprised and at first I cried with happiness very often because Irish people are
very friendly, welcoming and sympathisers. We get a lot of help from you. Thank you for the support!" In Ukraine Natalia had her own place. It was big salon with lots of services. "I specialised in permanent make-up, make-up, eyebrow shape, tint/lamination and lash lift." She also worked on TV and on photoshoots. "More often I worked on political channels. That’s a very exciting job, because during the day I was meeting a lot of interesting and outstanding people." Aurelia Gorczyk from Expose said that the team are delighted to introduce Natalia to their salon in Mounthawk.

Summer camp designed for kids' movement I am delighted to announce that we will be running two kids camps this summer. The five to eight-year-old group will start on Monday July 18 and run until Friday July 22. The nine to 12-year-old group will start on Monday July 25 and run until Friday July 29. Both camps will begin at 11am and finish at 2pm and will be run by Brand X certified coaches. As some of you may already know, our kid’s programme is associated with The Brand Xmethod which is the world leader in youth fitness and youth fitness education. The programmes that we receive from The Brand X increase physical literacy and athletic capacity in children while taking into account the whole child. Whether your child is already involved in sports or not, our programme is uniquely designed to cater for kids of all ages and ability. Our current kid’s programme is regarded as a foundational necessity for youth development and health, not just a class to pass time for children. Through careful planning and programming, we are sure that our summer camps will also be as beneficial for your kid’s. Over the course of the week, we will be focusing on each child achieving efficiency in basic foundational movements, for example, the squat, the hinge, the lunge, jumping, landing and many more. These basic movement patterns are essential in not only every sport, but also in daily
life activities. Increased sedentary behaviour combined with lack of unstructured play, outdoor exploration and increased sports specific training have left massive gaps in what was previously expected as natural and normal movement acquisition in our children. Lack of moving often causes additional problems with coordination, accuracy balance and agility. At Activate we believe that when it comes to training, children are not just mini adults. We don’t just do a scaled back version of what adults do. Instead, we take a holistic approach when training our kids which considers their psychological needs, their abilities to understand instruction and perceive their own actions and their developmental stage. The programme designed for our summer camps is methodologically planned to teach foundational movement skills, not simply activity based. Your child will learn fundamental movement skills in a fun safe environment which will in turn improve your child’s confidence and self-esteem. There will also be lots of fun games involved over the week which will challenge your child both physically and mentally. To sign up, or for more information, email us at youth@activate.ie. Multi-media experience opens at the Blasket Centre A new imaginative multi-media experience has opened re-telling the story of the Blasket islands. The flagship visitor experience - which pays homage to the cultural footprint the islanders left in a series of books documenting their lives - is expected to generate €1.6m for local economy over five years following an investment of €2.9m from Fáilte Ireland, the Office of Public Works and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. The Minister for State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works Patrick O’Donovan, and Máire Ní Shúilleabháin Uí Chíobháin, daughter of famed Blasket author Muiris Ó Súilleabháin, re-opened the iconic Blasket Centre (Ionad an Bhlas-
caoid) in Dún Chaoin on the Western edge of the Dingle Peninsula on Monday, making it another exciting focal point for people to come and discover along the Wild Atlantic Way
TRANSFORMATION
Adjacent to the recently opened viewing platform with spectacular views over the Blasket Islands, the project includes a total transformation of the centre’s exhibitions to deliver an authentic, and imaginative re-telling of the story of the Blasket islands, their rich heritage and their literature which is of national and international significance.
The centre has been designated as a Wild Atlantic Way Signature Discovery Point, and together with the walkway and viewing platform, which opened to the public in 2020, offers dramatic views of the Blasket Island archipelago and the Atlantic coastline. The centre provides direct employment for 20 people when in operation and will support over 250 additional jobs in this Gaeltacht region. “The story of the Blasket Islands is one of great interest to domestic and international audiences," Minister for Tourism Catherine Martin TD said. "The renewed visitor experience at the Blasket Centre is an exciting and imaginative opportunity for visitors to engage with the richness of that culture.”

World's Ugliest Dog of the Year This year's World's Ugliest Dog has been named and the title goes to Mr. Happy Face in Arizona. The 17-year-old American Chihuahua mix was chosen at the World's Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma from eight other contestants in the final in California on Friday last. The annual contest in Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds Event Center, returned this year after the pandemic. Its aim is to promote the adoption of dogs that some might consider to be less than aesthetically pleasing. Mr. Happy Face was adopted in August last year by Arizona woman Janeda Banelly, after she decided to adopt a dog during the pandemic. Staff at the shelter where she found him, told her he "could have been inbred because he was so ugly". The vet also said that the dog might only have a few weeks to live because of tumors and other medical conditions. "When I first met him, he was the happiest creature that I had ever met. He hobbled up to me and chose me," according to Benelly. "I vowed that day, he would be so loved that he would never remember how awful his previous life had been." Banelly received $1,000 and a trip to New York to appear on NBC's Today show as part of the prize.
British political moves that will affect Ireland This week Scotland's first minister Nicola Sturgeon announced she was pressing ahead with plans for a second referendum on Scotland’s independence from the UK. She is to write to Prime-minister Boris Johnson seeking consent to run the ref-
erendum in October 2023. It is very unlikely that Johnson will consent to such a move. However, Sturgeon said that if formal consent was not given that the next general election would become a "de facto referendum" with the Scottish Nationalist Party standing on a single issue of
independence. In London, British politicians voted in favour of changing parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol. Johnson said the legislation was needed to remove "unnecessary barriers to trade from Great Britain to Northern Ireland”. That move won't sit well with republican
politicians in Northern Ireland, who now have a majority in Stormont following recent elections there. Both the Scottish plans and the changes to the finer details of the Northern Ireland Protocol will move the notion of Irish independence further up the political agenda.

Miracle rescue as boy found alive in sewer after eight days An eight-year-old German boy trapped in a sewer after being reported missing for eight days has been found alive.
OFFICIALLY OPEN: The opening of the first phase of the Tralee-Fenit Greenway took place on Friday. Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan TD joined Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD, Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Johnnie Wall and outgoing Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jimmy Moloney to launch the opening. First phase of Tralee-Fenit Greenway officially opened The official opening of the first phase of the Tralee-Fenit Greenway took place on Friday when the Fenit-Spa leg of the greenway was opened to cyclists and walkers Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan TD joined Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD, Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Johnnie Wall and outgoing Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jimmy Moloney to launch the opening of the first 6.5km of greenway, allowing pedestrians and cyclists travel from Fenit to Spa and back again. The remainder of the greenway is expected to open in autumn. The entire 11.3 km greenway will encompass the already constructed stretch from Tralee Railway Station to the Bracker O’Regan Road and will greatly enhance the local tourist economy, allowing locals and tourists to cycle safely in a healthy and scenic car-free environment. Welcoming the project, Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Johnnie Wall praised the work carried out by Kerry County Council staff on the project. “It is something that has been in the pipeline for many years and to see it coming to fruition is fantastic,” he said. “Great credit must go to everyone involved, including the Council staff who
Named only as "Joe", the boy went missing from his front garden in Oldenburg in northwest Germany, on June 17. A huge search ensued but there was no luck finding the youngster until someone passing the sewer heeard a light whimpering sound from a manhole cover and called the emergency services.
Rescuers immediately rushed to the scene which is only about 200m from Joe's home. A firefighter entered the sewer, brought him out and miraculously Joe had no major injuries but was taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia. His father said that given the circumstances Joe he is "doing well". Police spokesman Stephan Klatte said the boy could not have lifted the heavy manhole cover on his own.
built the greenway, the landowners for their cooperation, and the Department of Transport and TII for funding the project. This, along with current and future Greenway projects in the county will be hugely beneficial for locals and visitors alike and I look forward to the rest of the Greenway opening in autumn.”
WORKS
In September 2018 the members of Tralee Municipal District approved the Part 8 Planning for the construction of the Tralee to Fenit. Kerry County Council were allocated funding under the DTTAS Greenway’s Funding Programme 2019-2021, in June 2019. Construction works began in November 2019 however it was delayed for six months due to COVID restrictions. The greenway begins in Fenit Village, close to the harbour, and travels along the corridor of the former railway line to the Bracker O’Regan Road, Tralee. The total length, approx. 11.3km, is 3.0m wide with an asphalt concrete finished surface. It includes 20 agricultural crossings, 10 private crossings, two public crossings and eight potential pedestrian access points.
Census results reveal largest population since 1851 The population of Ireland exceeds five million for the first time since 1851. Preliminary results of April’s census have revealed that there are now 5,123,536 people living in Ireland. This is an increase of 7.6% since 2016. It is also the highest population recorded in a census since 1851. The census results said that there are 2,593,600 females and 2,529,936 males in the country which is an increase of 7.7% and 7.5% respectively. The population increase of 361,671 was made up of a natural increase (births mi-
nus deaths) of 171,338 and estimated net inward migration (population change minus natural increase) of 190,333. Census 2022 took place on Sunday, April 3 this year and is managed by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). “The results provide valuable initial insights into how our population is changing and developing since Census 2016. We are busy working on the completed census forms and look forward to begin sharing the full set of detailed results from April next year,” said Cormac Halpin who is a Senior Statistician in the CSO’s Census Division.
Heatwave hits Japan as temperatures soar to record high While the weather in Ireland may feel like winter at the moment - the opposite is happening in Japan as the country is experiencing the most dangerous heatwave in 150 years. In Tokyo, 37 million people are struggling with the 40 degrees Celsius temperatures. As a result the Government is asking people to ration air conditioning and limit their use of electricity as there's a fear of growing power shortages. "Please save as much power as possible,
such as by turning off lights that are not in use," the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said on Monday. However, rationing electricity will not be easy as people are using air conditioning to prevent heatstroke. Tokyo experienced scorching heat for a fourth successive day on Tuesday, after setting records for the month of June. At the weekend, temperatures in the capital hit 35.4 degrees Celsius, while the city of Isesaki hit 40.2 degrees Celsius which is the country's highest June level since records began in 1875.

Keep indoor plants out of the sun I was sitting in the dining room looking out at the garden through sheets of rain, when something caught my eye; a dead plant. I shifted my focus, looked around me, and observed quite a few plants close to the point of no return! Indoor plants are easy to forget about, especially when the weather is fine. It is hard to believe but several spider plants, an orchid and a Saintpaulia ended up on a certain compost heap this week. Houseplants do not need a huge amount of care during the summer months, but there are a few things we must not forget! For example, the most obvious is watering. This is the main growing season for houseplants, so watering is essential as is adding some fertiliser. I use specific feeds for my plants, as the balance of nutrients needed can vary hugely depending on the type. As you can imagine, a large, leafy plant will have different requirements to, say, a cactus, or a gerbera. Most plants prefer to dry out slightly between watering, though not as much as I had let them dry out. Most indoor plants prefer to be out of full sun as they scorch easily. In particular, leafy plants are susceptible to this. Cacti and succulents are ideal for south facing windows during the summer months. Move any leafy plants to a spot away from south facing windows where they can enjoy a more stable temperature and a slightly shaded light. Often when plants are under stress, both indoors or outdoors, they become prone to disease, a bit like ourselves. For example, plants which dry out fre-
quently are a prime target for whitefly. They often go unnoticed until there is an infestation, at which point you will see woolly cocoon like clusters, as well as clouds of tiny white flies. Blackfly and greenfly are also common pests indoors. The best course of action, after prevention, is to spray the plant at regular intervals with a pesticide. As it is indoors, I would strongly recommend the use of organic spray, or even soapy water. Alternatively, use a pesticide which can be watered onto the soil, such as ‘bugclear ultra’, as this will have a systemic effect. This time of year is also suitable for repotting your houseplants, if not done in spring, as they will still get a few months of benefit and strong growth. I mix my own compost as I generally have quite a few to repot. I mix four parts good quality compost, one part sharp sand, one part perlite and one part vermiculite by volume. When repotting cacti and succulents I reduce the compost to two parts, and when repotting orchids, I substitute the vermiculite and perlite with two parts fine bark mulch. I never use homemade compost, as I find there are a lot of insects and ‘other creatures' in it which is fine used outdoors, but I don’t want to invite too much wildlife inside! It is possible to sterilise homemade compost by steaming it, but this is quite an operation, one which I have never undertaken. Alternatively, there are specialist composts available for every type of houseplant. When repotting, use a pot which is about two sizes bigger, unless the plant is a very vigorous one.
LIVERPOOL FANS: Arthur Moynihan, Mary Moynihan, John Murphy, Megan Murphy, Emma Cooper, Jay Murphy, Jack Murphy, Catherine-Ann Murphy and John O'Donoghue prepare to welcome John Aldridge to The Bridge Bar in Rathmore next week.
Liverpool star John Aldridge set to visit Rathmore | By Sean Moriarty Liverpool and Republic of Ireland legend John Aldridge will be the guest of honour at an Irish Community Air Ambulance (ICAA) fundraiser in Rathmore next week. Aldridge, who played in two World Cups under Jack Charlton, will visit The Bridge Bar, which is home to a large Liverpool Football Club fan base, on July 8. Two separate events are taking place, those who have bought VIP tickets will meet the soccer legend in the lounge area between 7 and 9pm. At 9.30pm the same evening, a second event in the main bar is open to all, with funds from both events going to the ICAA which is based at Rathcoole, near Millstreet in Cork, and not too far from the East Kerry village.
Although it is over 30 years since Aldridge last played for Liverpool and over 25 years since he played for the Republic of Ireland, he remains a fan favourite. “I hope you all remember me, [I will be telling] few stories about Jack and the lads, it should be good night,” said Aldridge in a promotional video that has been shared on social media. Publicans Catherine-Ann and Eric Murphy are celebrating 15 years at The Bridge Bar and Aldridge’s appearance at the venue is just one of many celebrations organised by the couple. “It is a bit of a coup – a big name in a small place,” Catherine told the Killarney Advertiser. Tickets for the VIP event cost €20. Admission to the later event is free. A raffle will also take place on the night with signed Liverpool and Republic of Ireland jerseys up for grabs.
Skellig Michael set to reopen this weekend It's expected that visitors will be allowed to return to Skellig Michael this weekend. Unexpected rockfall on June 13 shut the visitor attraction down temporarily to allow the Office of Public Works (OPW) and specialist teams visually assess and remove debris. Now it's hoped that the popular UNESCO World Heritage site will reopen this
Saturday (July 2) but this is subject to weather conditions remaining favourable. "Sceilg Mhichíl’s remote location in the Atlantic creates numerous issues as an operational visitor site, not least its accessibility, and throughout the more than three decades since the OPW began providing access to visitors, the safety of the public visiting and of our staff has been our priority at all times.
In all rockfall events, even minor ones, our expert-led investigations have to be very comprehensive," Minister with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Patrick O’Donovan TD, said. “Our staff, supported by experts and colleagues in the National Parks and Wildlife Service in the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, are currently on site and are taking all necessary steps to enable a safe
return of visitors within the shortest possible turnaround time while strictly adhering to any environmental and other legal obligations imposed at this UNESCO World Heritage Site that is, at the same time, a sanctuary for breeding sea birds." Sceilg Mhichíl is one of Ireland’s most iconic heritage sites and plays an important role in the local tourism economy, he added.

New housing scheme will benefit first-time buyers This week Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien announced a new landmark affordable housing scheme which will benefit thousands of middle income home buyers. The First Home Shared Equity Scheme, set to be rolled out from early July with €400m funding from the Government, is designed to bridge the gap for those whose income is too low to get them a big enough mortgage to buy their first home. The three main banks have signed up to the scheme which will see the State providing an interest-free stake of up to 30 percent in the home. It is expected to cover the purchase of
eight thousand new homes over the next four years. Under the scheme, the purchase of newbuild homes is to be jointly funded by the State and participating mortgage lenders. AIB, Bank of Ireland and Permanent TSB are on board with the scheme, and other lenders are expected to sign up. The flagship First Homes Scheme in the Government’s 'Housing For All' strategy, will have no income limits for those who apply for it. However, there are limits on the value of properties that will qualify for the scheme in each local authority area. The limits will be based on the median value for a new
home in the area. The new scheme is set to be welcomed by those who are earning too much to qualify for social housing, but too little to qualify for a mortgage in a property market where values are back close to Celtic Tiger peaks. It will help bridge the gap between the finance they have and the finance they need to purchase their first home. It will make a difference quickly. As an example, a couple with an income of €70,000, who want to buy a €320,000 new home, will put up a 10 percent deposit, the most they can borrow is €277,000. This leaves a gap of €43,000.

First Home would provide this amount as equity, with no interest for the first five years. This couple could also benefit from the State’s Help-To-Buy scheme, which usually provides tax relief of up to 20 percent of the property’s value. The scheme will apply to first-time buyers, but also to divorced people and those who have been made bankrupt. Further details of the scheme are available on www.gov.ie.

ARE SEEKING TO RECRUIT A
The Lissivigeen team who were the overall winners.
Schools compete for LEGAL SECRETARY to join their expanding practice pitch and putt title A pitch and putt competition which began in St Oliver's National School 14 years ago is now gaining momentum with other local schools taking part. | By Michelle Crean Back in 2007, St Oliver’s pupil Leon Hennessy asked if the school could start a pitch and putt competition. After much perseverance from Leon, teacher Noel O'Sullivan asked his colleague Tommy Galvin, who they dubbed as their ‘Minister of Sports’, and it was organised for June 2008. As part of the competition the winner would receive the Brendan Walshe Shield in honour of the former principal of St Oliver’s. "Over the years we have had various pupils win the shield who have gone on to excel in pitch and putt and golf, including John Kerrisk, Ewan MacIndoe, Stephen and Conor McCarthy, and Brian McCarthy who won it in Fourth Class and Sixth Class, denied a trio of victories by the lockdown in 2020, when he was in Fifth Class," Noel told the Killarney Advertiser. "Tommy Galvin retired last year but we had a regular chat about opening up the competition to other schools. So this year I decided to make this idea happen and though the idea was thrown out there late enough in May, Lissivigeen, the Monastery and the Gaelscoil were in a position to enter a team in June.
"We had a very high standard of pitch and putt, and the winning score came from a birdie on the last, care of the overall individual winner, Dara Wickham of Lissivigeen NS. That birdie handed Lissivigeen the overall victory." It was decided to name the shield for this new inter schools' competition the ‘Tommy Galvin Shield’ as it would be a fitting recognition of Tommy’s work promoting pitch and putt, and golf in the primary schools in Killarney. "Tommy was surprised and delighted with the news which we sprung on him at the prize giving. He encouraged the boys and girls present to give pitch and putt, and golf a go, and to try new sports over the summer." Tommy is captain of the Killarney Golf Club and supports an excellent youth set up in the club, he added. "The Killarney Golf Club also has seen a huge growth in girls playing and we were delighted to have three girls compete in the pitch and putt competition. Cora O’Sullivan won the Best Girl prize which makes me a very proud father! "Hopefully next year the Tommy Galvin Shield will feature more schools and that this is the beginning of a hotly contested competition over the coming years!"
The successful candidate would preferably have prior secretarial experience, ideally working in a law firm or have completed a legal secretarial course.
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: Digital dictation, reception and telephone duties; • Preparing briefs; • Liaising with clients, counsel and third parties; • Managing correspondence (scanning, filing etc.); • Diary management and general office administration. •

Kerry stars hoping to shrug off injuries ahead of next weekend’s All-Ireland semi-final Kerry players David Clifford, Adrian Spillane and Jack Barry are fighting to be fit in time for next Sunday’s All-Ireland semi-final against Dublin. Key forward Clifford picked up an ankle injury just five minutes into last weekend’s All-Ireland quarter-final victory over Mayo. Although he managed to stay on the field until the 67th minute (and score a vital goal), the 23-year-old was clearly playing through the pain barrier and fans are understandably sweating on his status ahead of the Dublin game. Speaking in his post-match press briefing, Kerry manager Jack O’Connor confirmed that Clifford had “jarred” his ankle. “David was struggling through much of the first half,” O’Connor said. “The boys worked on him at half-time but obviously he has an injury. We’ll have to get it scanned and see what’s the story.” The Kerry boss admitted that he considered taking his star man off but ultimately decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. “He’s not just an ordinary player and he showed it with the goal he scored, which was a serious goal. It came at a time when we were struggling to get scores. That’s the class of the man. That’s what he can do. “In the heat of battle the adrenaline keeps you going but I imagine he’ll be very sore tomorrow (last Monday).” The fact that Clifford was allowed to stay on the pitch for 62 minutes after

HAMSTRING STRAIN: Adrian Spillane.
he sustained his injury has given supporters cause for optimism, as has the fact that he was spotted walking around after the match quite freely, without assistance and without an icepack. O’Connor also revealed that absentees Jack Barry and Adrian Spillane are in a
“race against time” to be ready for the Dublin game on Sunday week (July 10). Barry picked up a calf strain in the lead up to the Mayo match while Spillane sustained a hamstring strain. On the plus side, Brian Ó Beaglaoich, Diarmuid O’Connor and Jason Foley – all of whom were subbed off versus Mayo are not believed to be injury concerns at this juncture. The Kerry bainisteoir confirmed that Ó Beaglaoich was suffering from cramp when he was replaced by Paul Murphy in the 48th minute. Diarmuid O’Connor fell on his back and Jason Foley left the field under the suspected head injury protocol, but both players appeared to be okay after the final whistle. “We’ll need everybody against the Dubs because they have huge running power and pace all over the field,” O’Connor said.

Two more clean sheets will win Kerry an All-Ireland When Kerry travelled to Páirc Uí Chaoimh for the 2019 Munster final, their frailties were laid bare for all to see. They scored 1-19 and ended up with the right result but every Kerry fan in attendance came home saying the same thing: we’ll win no All-Ireland defending like that. Cork scored three goals to go along with their 10 points - which was alarming enough by itself - but more worrying was the fact that Kerry coughed up four or five more goalscoring chances on top of that. Pat Moynihan could have driven his big red bus through the gaps down the centre of Kerry’s defence. And bear in mind that this was Cork doing the damage. What would the five-in-a-row-chasing Dubs do to us? Kerry went on to give Dublin a good rattle in the All-Ireland final, pushing the champs to a replay, but they were ultimately undone by an opposition player running completely unchallenged from his own 65, right down the barrel of the gun, and dispatching a goal from the 13-metre line. No one laid a hand on him. From a defensive perspective, it was criminal. The Kingdom kept six clean sheets in 16 games in 2019. In fairness to Peter Keane and his management team, this was a marked improvement on 2018 when Ker-
ry managed just two in 12. But if anything Kerry’s ability to shut out their opponents deteriorated in 2020 and 2021. Fewer matches were played due to the pandemic but across the two seasons Kerry kept a clean sheet just three times in 16. The 2020 campaign came crashing down when Cork scored a very preventable last-minute goal, and it’s safe to assume that Kerry would have at least reached an All-Ireland final were it not for the three goals Tyrone registered in last year’s semi-final. Throughout all of these unsuccessful seasons, or certainly towards the tail end of them, Kerry’s defenders, especially the full back line, had targets on their backs. Guys like Jason Foley and Tadhg Morley were singled out. “Not up to it”. On the surface it makes sense to blame the backs. The full forward scores a goal ergo the full back is at fault, right? It wasn’t that simple. If you look at the Cork match and pinpoint where the goal chances came from, most of them originated from runners out the field. It was the collective that was the problem, and the structure, not the full back line or anyone in it. This season is proof. Under Jack O’Connor Kerry have kept 10 clean sheets in 12 games. That’s more shutouts than the previous three years combined. That is an astonishing turnaround, especially when
you consider the fact that the personnel involved haven’t changed too much at all. If you compare the Cork game in 2019 with the Mayo game last weekend, 12 of the 15 starters are the same. Another starter on Sunday came off the bench against Cork in ’19, and two subs who came on also came on in that provincial decider three years ago. Two of Kerry’s most maligned backs back then, Jason Foley and Tadhg Morley, are now being heralded as potential All-Stars. What has changed? Well, in the case of Foley and Morley, their positions have changed for starters. Foley has shifted from corner back to full back and Morley from full back to No. 6. Morley’s positional switch seems obvious now that it has actually come to pass. He’s a natural fire fighter and is perfectly suited to man the area in front of Kerry’s full back line. As excellent as they have been so far this season, to focus too much on the performances of Foley and Morley is to fall into the same trap people fell into in 2019. Just as Kerry’s defensive shortcomings in recent seasons weren’t down to individuals, Kerry’s defensive strengths this season are not down to individuals either. At the end of last season I wrote about Kerry’s version of 100% effort without the ball and how I felt it differed to Tyrone’s version of 100% effort without
the ball. It wasn’t that Kerry weren’t trying, far from it. It just didn’t seem like Kerry players revelled in the act of spoiling. It almost felt, as a supporter looking on, that conceding goals didn’t hurt them enough. Opponents were bursting through untracked, or if they were tracked they came through their foray unscathed. This year something has clicked. Across the board, the tackling intensity has been turned up a dial or two and Kerry are hunting in packs. Guys like Brian Ó Beaglaoich (a hugely underrated player in my opinion), Adrian Spillane and Jack Barry have been irritants to the opposition, which is precisely what was needed. (Spillane and Barry will be big losses if they don’t recover in time for the Dublin game.) You’d have to say that Jack O’Connor and his backroom team of Micheál Quirke, Diarmuid Murphy and Paddy Tally have installed a really good defensive structure. The clean sheet stats don’t lie. Kerry aren’t there yet. It only takes one poor showing to undo the work of an entire season. But as things stand, for all the team’s riches in attack, it’s the defence that should give supporters hope. 10 clean sheets so far. Two more and Kerry will, in all likelihood, be All-Ireland champions.

Room for improvement as Kerry ease past sluggish Mayo He wasn’t going to play at all according to the pre-match rumours but a beautiful firsthalf goal by David Clifford helped Kerry to a surprisingly comfortable victory over Mayo on Sunday. ALL-IRELAND SFC QUARTER-FINAL _______________________________________________________
Kerry
1-18 | Mayo
0-13
CROKE PARK
Although he limped through much of the game after sustaining an early ankle injury, Kerry’s No. 14 burst into life in the 28th minute to fire his side into a two-point lead. It wasn’t all plain-sailing thereafter - The Kingdom struggled to push on, even when Aidan O’Shea was black-carded moments later - but they did ultimately pull away in the second half thanks in no small part to another assured defensive performance. Next up: a date with Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final on July 10th, and a long-awaited opportunity to right the wrongs of 2019.
STRANGE
The so-called curtain-raiser was a hard act to follow and the first half of this
game was accompanied by a strange enough atmosphere. It was as though the crowd were as drained by the opening fixture as the Armagh and Galway players must have been following their incredible match that ended with a historic penalty shootout. The second game was delayed by a full hour, which surely didn’t help Kerry and Mayo in their preparations. Kerry star Clifford was rumoured to be struggling with a calf injury right up until throw-in but he did take to the field (as predicted in last week’s Killarney Advertiser) and he registered Kerry’s first score of the day, a free to cancel out Cillian O’Connor’s opener. Gavin White gave Kerry the lead with a neat finish in the third minute but then a well-taken score by Conor Loftus drew Mayo level. Kerry hearts were in mouths in the fifth minute when Clifford required treatment after going over on his ankle in front of the Canal End. In his postmatch press briefing, Jack O’Connor admitted that he would have taken Clifford off if he was an “ordinary” player. Thankfully for Kerry the Fossa superstar was able to continue, though he was clearly far from comfortable for the duration of his 67-minute outing. Aidan O’Shea edged Mayo in front with a lovely long-range point and then, in the 11th minute, Paul Geaney missed a
great goal chance after being played in by a sensational pass by Tom O’Sullivan. Kerry quickly re-established their lead via O’Sullivan himself and another Clifford free. Seán O’Shea and Geaney took Kerry’s total to 0-6 but points at the other end by O’Connor, Rob Hennelly (free), Jack Carney and Stephen Coen had Mayo ahead with seven minutes left in the period. Then Clifford struck for cracking goal after being set up by Stephen O’Brien, and when Aidan O’Shea was sent to the bin the signs for Mayo were ominous. James Horan’s men managed the binning well, however, and scores by O’Connor and Kevin McLoughin – either side of a fine effort by David Moran – made it a one-point game at the break.
RUN
The opening stages of the second were nip and tuck with neither team really grabbing the match by the scruff of the neck but a run of seven straight points between the 51st and 67th minutes sealed the result. Moran (who rather unexpectedly – and very encouragingly - played the full 70 minutes), Tom O’Sullivan, Geaney (three), Killian Spillane and Seán O’Shea all found the target during this period.
Truth be told, Mayo were strikingly bad, particularly up front, and the result marked the end of the second reign of James Horan. Kerry now have two weeks to prepare for the challenge of Dublin. Jack O'Connor said David Clifford would require a scan on his ankle. One suspects that Kerry’s best player will be wrapped up in cotton wool this week, with a view to getting him right for a tantalising grudge match against the boys in blue.

He’d a huge game. He kicked two points and really rolled back the years in a way. We didn’t think there was 70 minutes in him. He thought so himself, by the way, and he proved it out there. He’s a great asset for us.

It was the perfect storm in a way. We were four weeks without a game and Mayo played two games in the interim. Plus the slippery conditions made it difficult to get up to the pace of it. I thought we were rusty in the first half.

The bottom line here is that these Kerry players have been yearning to get a cut at the Dubs since three years ago. O’Connor on the players’ collective motivation ahead of the All-Ireland semi-final RUSTY: Kerry manager Jack O'Connor said the four-week layoff and slippery conditions contributed to a below-par first-half display. Photo: Piaras Ó Mídheach/ Sportsfile.
It’s ridiculous sitting for four weeks watching our opposition playing games. It’s almost like you’re penalised for winning the provincial championship. Thankfully that changes next year but it’s a crazy system. The layoff between the Munster final and the Mayo game added to the challenge, the Kerry manager felt
We have to tidy things up. I thought we gave away a lot of ball. Mayo have tough, pacey backs and they were contesting the ball, but I think we have to be a bit cleverer with the delivery to David and our forwards. We were forcing it a bit. The Dromid native feels there is plenty of room for improvement

Mayo were woeful, Kerry wishy washy Eamonn Fitzgerald wasn’t too impressed by Kerry despite their big win over Mayo Eight points is a pretty convincing winning margin, but in truth it was anything but convincing. I believe that Kerry were there for the taking on Sunday last and had they met any of the other three teams making up this attractive double bill they would most likely have failed. They won because David Clifford scored a wonderful first-half goal, even though he was operating at 50% after damaging an ankle in the early stages. The injury did did not go away and the speculation will gain legs over the next week about his fitness to start against the Dubs. A scan on Monday last should have brought the definitive news, good or bad. One of the other key factors that delivered Kerry’s victory was the magnificent return to midfield of veteran David Moran. He lorded the exchanges and revelled in the sheer delight of dominating midfield. He needed to be tops because once again Diarmuid O'Connor was AWOL for the most part, only contributing a few hefty hits.
END OF THE ROAD: Mayo manager James Horan stepped down following Mayo's defeat to Kerry. Photo: Piaras Ó Mídheach/ Sportsfile.
Ogie's son revelled in constructive play and also scored two points. They were needed when just three of the starting forwards scored. Tom O’Sullivan got the Man of the Match award and few would quibble with that choice. He marked Cillian O’Connor very well and also scored 0-3. The third positive factor in Kerry's win was the solid defence, not just in containing the Mayo attack but also in attack, contributing valuables points.
CURSE
So far, so good for the Kerry selectors. But we must factor in the Mayo Curse and I am not referring to that well worn piseog going back to the 1950s when they were celebrating their first and only All-Ireland title while a funeral was passing by. The curse I’m talking about is a more fundamental flaw: their inability to covert a high number of scoring opportunities. Mayo were woeful once more when it came to sending the ball over the bar.
One astute Kerry supporter summed it up well for me coming off the Hogan Stand. “Do you know something, you wouldn’t see those awful wides in a club match at home”. Mayo had over 30 shots at goal and they couldn’t even convert 50% into scores. Even Lee Keegan, who sallies up field from the full back line and scores an average of two points per game, could not find the range. As for goal chances they were very limited and well contained by Kerry. They had a glorious chance of a goal just before the half-time whistle. McLoughlin thundered through the middle and should have buried it but he blasted it over the bar to leave Kerry one point ahead at half-time instead of Mayo leading by two. Mayo have so few natural scoring forwards. Kerry have several. That said, Kerry did not win as easily as the score indicates. Even on one leg Clifford scored 1-3 and just two other forwards scored. That is not good. Kerry hit seven wides while Mayo had dou-
ble that number and therein lies a key factor in determining the outcome.
RELIEF
How will the selectors view this performance? Relief first and foremost that they jumped this hurdle even if it was not convincing, and they will make due allowance for this wishy washy display considering that this was the first decent match they had since the league game against Tyrone in the Fitzgerald Stadium. That rustiness was very apparent in the first half. They began to play as they should in that second half, although that was made so much easier by the profligacy of Mayo. (I realise that Mayo were without two of their best forwards.) The Kerry machine was anything but well oiled and no doubt they will have plenty to work on. If Kerry wishes to win this 2022 All-Ireland they will need a lot of luck and certain fences mended. A major cause of concern and weakness I pinpointed so often is the lack of goals scored by this Kerry team, while agreeing that this present defence has excelled in preventing the goals through the middle that cost Kerry at least two All-Irelands. Goals win matches and in my view a goal scored is worth more than the three points. It puts the opposition under pressure and doubts creep in. I feel that the Kerry defence is the tightest and most effective the Dubs will meet in 2022. More about that next week.
One astute Kerry supporter summed it up well for me coming off the Hogan Stand. “Do you know something, you wouldn’t see those awful Mayo wides in a club match at home”.

Blues remember Don Harrington RIP Members of Killarney Athletic were united in grief this past week following the news that the club’s founder Donal (Don) Harrington had passed away suddenly at his home in Mirfield, Huddersfield on Sunday morning. WINNERS: The St Paul's U14 girls team that won the Euro Basketball Cup in Barcelona.
Euro glory for Paul’s girls The 2022 season will live long in the memory for the St Paul's U14 girls team. As if capturing both the Kerry and Cork leagues wasn't enough, they also performed heroically in the All-Ireland Club Championships to finish third. But the season did not finish there. Recently they jetted off to Barcelona to compete in the Euro Basketball Cup, the biggest international tournament in Spain and one of the most important worldwide. In the group stage they faced off against Vegas Fire of America, French club Al Meyzieu and Lebanese side Brainers Hawks. The scoring exploits of Ciara O’Sullivan, Clodagh Clancy and Aideen Fleming, as well as a half-court buzzer beater at the half by Kate Healy, powered them to a comfortable win against Vegas Fire. Síofra Randles, Cliona Moynihan (daughter of Kerry GAA legend Séamus) and Abby Doherty made important contri-
butions in win No. 2 against Al Meyzieu, and Ava Weldon, Muireann Healy, Laura Healy and Liadh Forde put in a big shift in their third victory over the Hawks. Three wins from three teed up a winnertakes-all showdown with the tournament favourites: the Horsholm 79ers of Denmark. Further stellar defensive work allied to good basketball on the offensive end saw the Killarney club prevail on a scoreline of 48-16. It was real team effort all 11 squad members saw game time, all scored, and all defended as though their lives depended on it. Paul’s deservedly took home the laurels, and Ciara O’Sullivan was recognised by the organisers as the tournament MVP.
ST PAUL’S: Liadh Forde, Kate Healy, Muireann Healy, Ava Weldon (co-captain), Síofra Randles, Clodagh Clancy (co-captain), Abby Doherty, Laura Healy, Aideen Fleming, Cliona Moynihan, Ciara O’Sullivan. Coach: Pádraig Weldon. Assistant Coach: Rian Weldon.
League final rematch awaits Kerry Kerry will face Armagh in the quarter-final of the All-Ireland Ladies SFC following last weekend’s comfortable victory over Westmeath in Killarney. The Kingdom saw off their Leinster counterparts with 14 points to spare to top Group C and secure the first seed. This result coupled with Armagh’s 14-point win against Monaghan in Group B tees up a repeat of this year’s Division 2 league final. (Armagh finished second behind reigning All-Ireland champions Meath.) That league final in April was a cracker with the girls in green and gold just about securing a famous three-point win. Armagh will no doubt be seeking revenge in
the last eight clash, which will take place next Saturday, July 9 in Tullamore. Kerry had little trouble in seeing off Westmeath above in the Park last Saturday. They led by 1-5 to no score in the first quarter with Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh punching home the first goal of the game. The visitors put up a fight but Kerry still held a seven-point lead at the interval. Half-time substitute Rachel Dwyer put Westmeath the sword in the second half; she scored 1-5 as Darragh Long and Declan Quill’s side ran out 2-17 to 0-9 winners. Also through to the last eight as group winners are Dublin, Cork and Meath. They will play Donegal, Mayo and Galway respectively.
Don was posted at Killarney Garda Station for just a few short years (1965 to 1969) but through his sense of community spirit he came into contact with a group of local teenagers playing soccer in the Sandpit (now the High Street car park). It was from there that he expanded the group to include interested lads from all over the town to form Killarney’s first organised affiliated soccer club. Don entered the club into the Desmond League in Limerick as there was no Kerry league at the time and he had played underage and junior soccer with Newcastle West himself after his family moved there from Cork City. His newly formed club were warmly welcomed to compete against sides from mostly the West Limerick area but also Tralee Dynamos and Listowel. As the majority of members were teenagers at the time, Don (‘Garda Dan’ or ‘Harry’ as he was known as by the boys) entered underage cup competitions firstly to get the club up and going. As well as organising and managing the teams, Don also drove the transport on occasions to the away matches. Don managed to recruit a few extra older players - some of whom were not from Killarney but worked in local hotel and tourism related businesses - and they were then able to enter a senior team into the Desmond League in 1966. This allowed Don to become a player/ manager at the youthful age of 20. He also secured the use of a playing pitch in a part of the McShain estate known as the Half Moon, situated in front of Killarney House. It was here

that the club played all its home matches from 1966 to 1989 before moving to the Knockreer area and later to the club’s current base in Woodlawn. Don and his wife Monica rip remained in Killarney until 1969 before they moved to England when Don joined the West Yorkshire police forcw, with whom he served until his retirement as a superintendent in 2004. He was a loyal Huddersfield Town supporter and enjoyed playing soccer with the police divisional teams into his forties. Don and his wife Monica (who sadly died in 2015) made a visit to Killarney in 1990 for the celebration of Killarney Athletic’s 25th anniversary and the couple returned annually thereafter to renew old and new friendships with many people associated to the club. From their annual return visits to Killarney Don and Monica where affectionately welcomed and liked by all their old and new friends. It’s a sad time for everyone associated with Killarney Athletic as they say goodbye to “The Don”.
Nice run ahead for Breen and Nagle Paul Nagle and Craig Breen are looking forward to a run of World Rally Championship rallies that have yielded top results in the past. Following their sixth place on last weekend’s Safari Rally the Kerry/Waterford crew are in fifth place in the championship standings, just two points off joint third placed drivers Ott Tanak (Hyundai) and Takamoto Katsuto (Toyota). Their next event is Rally Estonia on July 14-17 where they have finished second for the last two years. This is followed by Rally Finland which takes place two weeks after Estonia. They finished third
on the Jyväskylä-based event in 2021. In August they will tackle Ypres Rally Belgium, an event they have won in its pre-WRC days and where they finished second last year. Breen and Nagle were part of a fivestrong M-Sport team in Kenya last weekend but the squad had to rely on SuperRally rules to get all cars to the finish. “We have a testing programme coming up next ahead of Estonia as well as a short turnaround at base so we are going to be flat out again, but keeping our heads high and looking forward to Estonia,” said team boss Richard Millenner.

The flying Kerryman who never forgot where he came from | By Eamonn Fitzgerald Tom O’Riordan (Tommo as he was affectionately known) died last week at the grand age of 84. He had been suffering from Parkinson's for a number of years but the Ardfert native was as resilient in the face of his illness as he was when he was running. He succeeded on many occasions in track and cross country races in Ireland and far afield, and he dealt with that health hurdle with typical stoicism, accepting the irony of his doctor's prognosis: Parkinson’s won’t kill you but you will die from it. I first met him in Belfield in the early seventies. While we were training hard with UCD football team he was on a training spin on the same campus. His competitive career was over having represented Ireland in the 1964 Olympics. He didn’t make the final and he always said in later life that he was disappointed he didn't make it because he knew he was good enough. After those Olympics he was appointed as athletics reporter for the Independent. He also covered a lot of football matches and that's where I got to know him. He was highly respected by players and managers. They trusted him, knowing that he wouldn't betray confidentiality and publish half-truths or training session secrets. In particular, Mick O'Dwyer gave him carte blanche to the Kerry train-

ing sessions. He became a great friend of Páid Ó Sė, who was a regular visitor to his home in Dublin. I have no doubt that he convinced Páidí to use some of those merciless runs up hills to build stamina. Ask the Westmeath men! Tom used these quite a lot in his training for cross-country races. Heffo didn’t give him the same open-door policy as O’Dwyer did. At Parnell Park, the Dub's boss operated a closed-doors system for the Dublin training sessions. Tommo first hit the headlines as a stu-
dent in his native Kerry and then secured an athletic scholarship to Idaho University. He impressed, winning races in the majority of the US states. He was a winner in Ireland on track and cross country, breaking at least 14 Irish records. He was very influential as manager of the Irish cross country team in Limerick preparing John Treacy for victory. They became great personal friends and Treacy often stayed with O'Riordan. He was a fine journalist and stories
abound of him running and double jobbing by covering the particular race for the Indo. More often than not he was writing about a race where he was the winner but he was anything but a self publicist. He had deadlines to meet so he would create the report and then seek out the nearest telephone to file his report while still wearing his running gear. His son Ian O’Riordan is also a very fine reporter of athletics for the Irish Times. May Tommo rest in peace.

01.07.2022 SPORT NOTES without reply. It wasn’t until the 19th minute that the visitors opened their scoring with a point from play. A Mikey Casey point from play and a Daithi Casey free gave us a well-deserved 3 point lead at the break. Dr Crokes 0-5 Gneeveguilla 0-2. Both teams swapped scores at the beginning of the second half. The game really turned in the 12th minute of the second half when Gneeveguilla were reduced to 14 men after a second yellow was shown to one of their players. We played well and utilised our extra player. Further points from Daithi Casey, Paul Clarke and Billy Courtney helped secure a 5 point win. Our final game of the County League will be away to Kenmare Shamrocks on the weekend of the 9/10 of July. COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 3: Dr Crokes 1-8 St.Senan’s 1-8. Our second team travelled to Finuge on Saturday night. In tough weather conditions we came up against a very strong St Senans team. Muckross Rowing Club REGATTA CANCELLATIONS: Following its three year COVID hiatus, the eagerly awaited return of Killarney’s oldest surviving sporting contest will have to wait a little longer. The bad weather of last weekend forced the cancellation of Killarney Regatta which was due to run on Sunday last. It is hoped that a rescheduled fixture will be possible towards the end of the summer. Also cancelled last weekend was the two-day Cork Regatta. NATIONAL TRIALS: Trials for the Irish rowing squad to compete in the Home International Regatta 2022 have been rescheduled to this weekend, taking place at the National Rowing Centre in Cork. We send the very best of luck to junior member Ethan O’Neill who is trialling for the junior squad and to Finn O’Sullivan, trialling for the senior squad with UL RC. The Homes Regatta is an annual contest of the four rowing federations of Great Britain and Ireland. This year’s regatta is being hosted by England and is scheduled for Saturday, July 23 at the London Docklands. FERMOY REGATTA: Following the disappointment of last weekend’s cancelled racing, the club is already back in competitive action at the Fermoy Regatta this Sunday, July 3. Muckross RC will be represented by 37 crews, we wish them all the very best of luck. UPCOMING: Rowing Ireland 1k Classic (Masters, J13-J15), July 9, NRC Farran.
