Local Councillor calls for Boots on the Ground
| By Sean Moriarty A bitter feud between Traveller families in the Ballyspillane estate took another nasty turn on Tuesday night when up 100 people were engaged in threatening and abusive behaviour. Meanwhile two women were involved in a street brawl earlier during the week. As a result one man and two women have been arrested as part of the Garda investigation in to an on-going feud at the Killarney Estate. A man has been arrested and charged under public order offences following another night of tension at a Killarney estate. The women are expected to face assault charges. The feud is on-going for over a year but Cllr Donal Grady says that enough is enough and it is time for the Army to be brought in to control the situation and for Kerry County Council to serve evection notices on the people living in local authority houses. “It was serious a year ago, the time for huffing and puffing is over,” Cllr Grady told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am calling for the Army to brought in to restore peace in the area.” Killarney Gardai confirmed that one male was arrested on Tuesday night. It is understood that the two women were arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning. “During the early [Tuesday] evening a number of individuals were involved in a verbal exchange,” sergeant Dermot O’Connell told the Killarney Advertiser. “This escalated into groups, totalling about 100 individuals on the road side of the estate. They were jeering and shouting at one another but there were

no assaults. One person was arrested for public order offences. He was brought to Killarney Garda station where he was charged and he will be brought before the courts.” Gardai stayed at the scene until the early hours of Wednesday morning to ensure the situation did not kick-off again. There has been on-going disputes between rival families in the area. Last April an accelerant – described as something similar to a petrol bomb – was thrown at the front door of a house. The occupants of the house, who were sleeping at the time of the attack, managed to get out through the back of the house safely.
Half a million Lotto prize remains unclaimed | By Sean Moriarty One week after a Fossa shop sold a €500,000 Euromillions winning ticket the claimant has yet to step forward. The winning Euromillions Plus ticket was sold in Foley’s Spar ahead of last Friday’s draw. The National Lottery is urging Kerry people to check their tickets. The shop, situated on the busy Ring of Kerry road, is beside the Liebherr Container Cranes factory and across the road from Killarney Golf Club. Management at the shop say they hope the winner is local.
The winning numbers were
“There is great excitement around but no one has claimed it yet,” shop manager Brid Anne Carey told the Killarney Advertiser. “There are a few syndicates in the factory but they would surely have come forward by now. We have a lot of passing trade but I do hope its local. The shop has been very busy since the news with locals coming in checking their tickets. Back in 20013 the same shop sold a €250,000 National Lottery ticket but it was never claimed and was the winnings were returned to the National Lottery’s central fund.

One for the road? Fitzgerald Stadium has been forced to reduce its standard 38,000 capacity to accommodate season ticket holders. Some 7,000 fans from both counties hold season tickets, but the seating in the grandstands is on a first come, first served basis.
BIG MATCH FEVER: Dubliner Paul Sherry, President of Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, gets in the pre-game spirit outside the Kerry GAA Store in Killarney Outlet Centre.
Killarney to roll out the Green and Red carpet Killarney is set for a bumper week as thousands of football and horse racing fans are set to arrive in the town over the coming days. Many fans are expected in their droves ahead of the all-important Super 8 clash with Kerry on Sunday at Fitzgerald Stadium. The match is expected to attract a capacity crowd of 31,900 to the stadium, bringing a much needed mid-season boost to the town. “It promises to be an exciting sporting week, with a huge crowd expected at the recently upgraded Fitzgerald Stadium for what promises to be an epic encounter, and the local businesses will contribute hugely to the special atmosphere in and around the town on big match day,” said Paul Sherry, President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.
“It is a wonderful mid-season boost for the town and I know that businesses are expecting a bumper weekend with GAA supporters and punters set to avail of the top class hospitality for which the town is famous.” Top flight football is a central part of summers in Killarney, traditionally Munster finals with our great rivals Cork, but with the advent of the new Super 8 format since last year new sets of supporters will get the chance to experience what Killarney has to offer. “July in Killarney conjures up memories of Munster Football Finals and the July Festival Meeting at the Killarney Races. It wouldn’t be a July without Bird’s Bazaar in the Fair Hill Car Park. Bird’s initially were invited to Killarney in the 1940s by the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee in order to raise funds for developing the Stadium,” said the stadium’s Tatyana McGough.
Arrive early Gardai in Killarney will be operating an extensive security and traffic management plan on Sunday to ensure the safety of visiting fans from both sides. Gardai anticipate that the majority of the traffic will arrive from the Tralee side, as Mayo supporters will use the western corridor via Limerick to arrive in Killarney.
Car parking facilities will be available near the rugby pitch on the northern side of the by-pass road. “The preferred route for Mayo fans will be via Limerick and our traffic management plan has taken that in to account, both before the game and for the exits postmatch,” Sergeant Dermot O’Connell told the Killarney Advertiser. “We ask all people arriving from the Tralee side to head for the by-pass where there will be plenty of parking in the rugby grounds and
“Mayo and Horse Racing Fans can expect some sporting excitement during the day while enjoying what Killarney can offer in the evening by way of entertainment.” The five-day Killarney July Racing Festival will commence on Monday. Highlights include Ladies Day on Thursday, one of the key dates in Killarney's social calendar. “The three race meetings, held every May, July and August, are a major boost to the town, and I know that Gerard Coughlan and his team at the racecourse estimate that the three meetings are worth in excess of €8 million to the town every year. It will certainly be a bumper week ahead for Killarney and I know that local businesses are really looking forward to welcoming visitors from all over the country and beyond,” added Mr Sherry.
stewards there to direct them.” With over 30,000 ticked fans, and countless without tickets, the Gardai are advising people to arrive early. “Get into the stadium early,” added Sergeant O’Connell. “There will be plenty of entertainment laid on by the GAA inside in the grounds.” Security will be tight on all approach streets to the stadium with areas cordoned off at the Lewis Road and Rock Road access roads. These roads will be closed to traffic and local residents will have to show their
The main stand at Fitzgerald Stadium can hold in and around 7,500 people but to avoid potential crush at the turn-styles the decision has been taken to reduce capacity (for safety reasons) and once they stands are full fans will be directed to the terraces. “Our advice to patrons who intend on traveling to the game on Sunday is to allow a plenty of time. Come early to the Stadium and enjoy the entertainment which will be provided by Celtic Steps,” said the stadium’s Tatyana McGough, “Generally speaking the Mayo GAA supporters travel in their thousands and I am sure they will be matched by the Kerry support on Sunday. From experience the atmosphere in Killarney both in the stadium and in the town will be electric.”
Racing fans are sure to flock to the Ross Road course on Wednesday following the announcement that legendary jockey Frankie Dettori will make his maiden appearance in Killarney. “This is a tremendous feather in our cap because Frankie Dettori is box office. We are absolutely thrilled,” said Killarney Racing Manager Philip O’Brien,“We are overjoyed that he will include Killarney in his schedule for the first time and his personality has never been greater so we expect a bumper crowd on the day.”
driving licences to gain access to local streets. In addition the Lewis Road will be used an evacuation route for emergency services and will be closed to the public from 10am. “People are advised not to bring bottles or umbrellas or anything that could be considered a weapon near the ground,” added Sergeant O’Connell. “We will be confiscating such items.” Disabled fans will be able to access specific parking at the Dalton’s Avenue entrance to the stadium.

Fire destroys house in Lissivigeen Killarney Gardai and Kerry County Fire Services are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a house in Lissivigeen on Tuesday afternoon.
Two units of Killarney Fire Brigade were despatched to the scene just after 4pm on Tuesday. It is the second fire in the area in the space of a week— a car was destroyed in a neighbouring property last Thursday (July 4). Killarney fire services told the Killarney Advertiser that the lone of occupant of the house was extracted safely and without injury before the blaze ripped through the bungalow.
The house was completely gutted in the blaze. The incidents come at a time when local councillors are warning that gorse fires in the Killarney area are having a negative impact on the fire service’s operational budget for 2019. Speaking at last week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting, acting county chief fire officer Vincent Hussey said there was a 118 per cent increase in the number of gorse fires in the county up the end of May this year.
“Gorse fires at 188 were up 102 for the same period last year January to May,” he told the meeting. “This is an 118 per cent increase which is a significant increase in this type of incident. This will have a consequent negative impact on the budget for 2019.”
TEAM IRELAND : Transplant Team Ireland Anna Pokojaska with Team manager Colin White.
World Transplant Games debut for Killarney woman A Killarney woman will represent Ireland at the World Transplant Games in Gateshead next month. Anna Pokojska received a kidney transplant in 2017. She is originally from Poland, and moved to Killarney in 2006 where she now lives with her husband and daughter. Anna will be attending the World Transplant Games for the first time and will compete in the 30-39 years categories in both the 30k Cycling Road Race and the 5k Mini-Marathon. She prepared for August 17-24 games by tackling last weekend’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. “I always wanted to do the Ring of Kerry but between one thing and another and being sick all the time it never happened but I finally
managed it on Saturday,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. Anna is a member of the largest ever Irish Transplant Team travelling abroad. They will be among 2000 participants from over 60 countries who will take part in the World Transplant Games. “I went to Dublin on Sunday, straight after the Ring of Kerry where I met the rest of the team for the first time,” she added. “They are a great bunch of people and I am looking forward to getting to know them better and getting out to Newcastle and challenging myself even further.” Ranging in age from 16 to 81, the Irish team of 29 men and 10 women have all undergone organ transplants including one heart, one lung, five liver, one bone marrow and 31 kidney transplants.
DAMAGED: A statue of Liberty replica (as seen in the background) was one of three statues vandalised last Saturday morning. Photo:Valerie O’Sullivan
Damage adds a sour note to the 4th of July celebration Gardai in Killarney are investigating the criminal damage to three statues that were placed in the town last Thursday as part of the 4th of July Festival. Two giant Uncle Sams and a Statue of Liberty replica were vandalised between 2.30 and 3.30 on Thursday night into Friday morning last. Sergeant Dermot O'Connell of Killarney Garda Station is appealing for witnesses. “Investigations are on-going,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is very disappointing. The whole event was extreme-
ly successful from the parade to the follow-on events like the cinema in the park and the fireworks. We had next to nothing in terms of public order offences but the damage to these four caricatures is extremely disappointing.” Sgt Dermot O’Connell says anyone with information on the damage to the two Uncle Sam statues can also text the See Something, Say Something number confidentially; text KILLARNEY plus your message to 50555.

| By Sean Moriarty FORGING A TRADITION: Pa MacGillycuddy, with his son Timmy, carrying on the art of farriery, now in its third generation at the family forge in Ballybribeen, Killarney, Co Kerry. Photo:Valerie O’Sullivan
Half a century on the hoof at the track A wonderful tradition that dates back half a century will be maintained at Killarney Races this week when a third generation of one local family will provide the all-important farrier service at the track. Timmy McGillycuddy from Ballydribeen, Killarney, will follow in his father and grandfather’s footsteps when he joins his dad, Pa, in the farrier forge at the racecourse for the five-day July festival. The link with the track goes all the way back to 1969 when Patrick McGillycuddy senior—who trained at Murphy’s Forge in Barraduff—was engaged by the Race Company to put his skills as a blacksmith
to good use. He passed on his know-how and knowledge to his son, Pa, who is a legendary personality in the industry and, in turn, Timmy took up the trade to ensure the great tradition and top class service continues with father and son working side by side. “Our 50-year association with the local racecourse is a great milestone and it’s
certainly a landmark worth celebrating,” said Timmy. While some of the raw materials used might have changed significantly over the past five decades, the essential tools of the trade remain constant and the skills of half a century ago are identical to those used today. “There might be better nails and shoes and better quality aluminium available now but the principles of the trade remain the same,” said Timmy. He explained that a farrier’s goal is still to make a horse’s gait as efficient as possible to ensure comfort, increased athletic ability, greater balance and smoother
movement. The McGillycuddy family operates a busy forge at Ballydribeen where pride of place goes to an anvil dating all the way back to 1800 and it has stood the test of time. It was sourced in the historic Churchtown Estate in Beaufort – where Beaufort Golf Course now stands. The spectacular Georgian house was built in 1740 by Sir Rowland Blennerhassett and the estate was bought in 1860 by James Magill who turned it into one of the largest dairy farms in the south west.
Passing of Sliabh Luachra’s Dan Cronin There was widespread sadness in the Rathmore area earlier this week with the passing of legendary local author Dan Cronin. Aged 98, Dan wrote In the Shadow of the Paps, which has been described as a hugely significant book on the heritage of the area. Dan’s book (published in 2001 by Crede, Sliabh Luachra Heritage Group) is the definitive work on The City, The Paps, and the life and traditions of Sliabh Luachra – which is the name given to the
mountains and glens on the borders of Cork, Kerry and Limerick. Dan was a selftaught man: in his youth he worked as a rock-breaker with a road construction gang which helped fund his own library. He spent all his life on the foothills of the Paps Mountains and collected folklore by listening to storytellers since he was a child. Dan’s special interest is the Caher (The City) at the foothills of the Paps. He was a founding member of Rathmore Credit Union and played a huge part in getting the Sliabh Luachra Heritage Cen-
tre off the ground. Earlier this year the centre received a Community Vibrancy Recognition Programme Award from NEWKD. The judges were particularly impressed by the sense of community and its devotion to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Sliabh Luachra region. Dan passed away on July 7 in the care of the staff of Killarney Nursing Home. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret. His wake and funeral took place on Monday and Tuesday this week.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Well, if you are going to sing do sing a rebel song
Green Spaces It is high time we rethought our urban spaces and sidewalks and planted trees. Deerpark shopping centre in Killarney could badly do with more trees, as could the aptly named Beech Road. In heat of up to 40 degrees, people scramble for shade much in the same way as for shelter during severe winter cold and rain. And trees will not only shade you, they will warm you too when cut down. Even in 22 degrees cars get unpleasantly warm. Coincidentally The Guardian has published a report to say that scientists now recommend “billions of trees” are planted across the world. Everywhere. That means we can no longer sit on our laurels and think it is all left to the Amazon to cool our cucumbers. I find it a bit rich now the beef farmers here are suddenly environmentally
concerned about the Amazon rainforest being cut down because it is competition for their steers! Maybe the Irish farmers might think of planting more trees, and not just for income. We are full of contradictions when it comes to the environment and trees. In the way some people are attached to dogs, others are attached to trees. I certainly bemoan their loss. In Killarney, there was no need for the council to cut that fine oak tree at the upper exit to the Deerpark shopping centre just so cars could go faster without incident. Is there any good reason we can’t have trees along Main Street and in the Milk
Cut from coarse cloth When did coarseness in public become so acceptable? Last week at the time of writing I was shocked at the coarseness of the Brexiteers acting like soccer hooligans and essentially mooning at European culture. And then we have the Taoiseach in the Dail. I could not believe my ears. Likening Micheal Martin to a priest “ going behind the altar”. This was not part of a heated debate as Leo tried to say later, passing off the remark by way of apology in the media after a public outcry. It was a simple question by Micheal Martin. This country is very tolerant and very open to other traditions and races and the vast majority have few or no issues with a person’s sexuality or race. But it is not so tolerant, hopefully, it will allow the leader of this country to become so arrogant he is contemptuous of our biggest religion, our priesthood, victims of abuse and indeed the leader of the opposition.
Fine Gael seems a mess right now. I wrote about infighting in the DNA of Fine Gael in Killarney in this column and the disgrace it is that we have not one town councillor of the Government party now. Waterford has since come apart, and now Meath. I know of a previous incident involving senators at a meeting in Dublin and stuff was brushed under the carpet. Back to Leo, you could never imagine Micheal Martin casting a slur like Leo’s. Why? Micheal is a well brought up Cork man who has been taught how to debate and who is wise enough to know that arrogance is the deadliest of sins, not just in the Christian world, but in the heroic world too. I bet FG has begun to regret not going for that other Corkonian, the very reserved Simon Coveney. The shine has gone off Leo and his ministerial D4 gang “trendy” set whose idea of high culture seems to be that which is popular and sentimental—an episode of
Market Lane and the Glebe car park? And at the bottom of the sandpit? Tralee some years ago cut down a lot of its trees because the berries were annoying people. And the leaves were falling on the paths. Imagine! But that’s Tralee for you. A tiny stream they call “the big river” and there is hardly a tree in the place. This is Killarney. We surely know how to manage our trees in this town. By the way, where is that pedestrian crossing on Mission Road from Beech Road to Killarney House. I witnessed two near accidents this week involving people desperately trying to cross on foot and on bikes.
Love Island is the zenith for them! So much for their expensive educations. We had an amazing phrase by Sean O’Rourke on RTÉ Radio One regarding women’s supposed sexuality. And then in recent weeks again, on national radio and in newspapers, we have a variety of s- words. It seems our leading lights are blurring private and public boundaries all too frequently now. The Irish have always been accused of being coarse. For a time we were conscious of smartening ourselves when taking our place among the nations of the earth. It seems that now that the nations of the earth are arriving here, we are determined to live up to the stereotype we once strived to reject. The word coarse comes from cloth that is rough and not finely woven. Rude, unpolished, and vulgar are other words. It may be time we looked beyond the body beautiful and the fine toning and tuned our language a bit finer, at least in public. And if we must curse, curse imaginatively like Achilles when he told his boss Agammenon he had “the face of a dog and the heart of a deer!”
Am I the only one who thinks Mickey Harte should not have apologised for Tyrone singing a rebel song as their bus passed an Orange /Loyalist parade. I can’t but smile at the very natural response of spirited young fit men in the Gaelic tradition inside in the bus in Aughnacloy bursting out with a few bars of
“Come out ye black and Tans.” at the Orange parade whose main mantra, historically, is Croppy Lie Down. In any case no-one marching outside the bus heard them. I actually applaud the Tyrone team response—what were they supposed to do? Sit silent as stones or break out into a burst of cheering on these marchers deliberately swaggering through a nationalist area? I have to confess, I’d have joined in a bar of the song myself given the occasion. Because as my late mother, used to say, if you scratch me deep enough, the green will come out. If I were Mickey Harte I would be rethinking the apology. And if the boys are any good at the singing, record them and make a few bob for the jerseys. Far worse things have been thrown in the north than bars of songs.

International Hotel bids fond farewell to Frank O’Sullivan
FOND FAREWELL: The International Hotel owners The Coyne Family and staff bid a fond farewell to Frank O'Sullivan after 24 years of service.
For 24 years he has been the face of the International Hotel but Thursday this week marked the end of an era for head porter Frank O’Sullivan.
Killarney Park Run on the move >>>>>
The Rookery Road man turns 69 next week, and last night (Thursday) he marked nearly a quarter of century with a special leaving-do at the hotel he called home for so long. A veteran of the hospitality industry, Frank started his career in the Europe Hotel at the tender age of 15, where he waited tables for a year before taking up his first position at the International as Hall Porter where he assisted hotel guests for four years. Meanwhile out on the Park Road, Pretty Polly were building an empire and soon enough Frank was drawn to the corporate world spending a few years with the famous hosiery brand. Second time round, Frank returned to the Lobby of the International Hotel as assis-
tant to the Head Porter, Brendan O’Shea and together they were the eyes and ears of the hotel. “I'm leaving with a lorry load of memories,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is the people I will miss the most. I was going to hand in my uniform but Mrs Coyne (of Coyne family who own the hotel) told me to keep it as she might need me back.” Over the years Frankie looked after some of the biggest names in showbiz including Andrew Ridgley of British pop band Wham, Denis Waterman of Minder fame, Irish actor Patrick Bergin and RTE presenter Bibi Baskin. See next week’s Killarney Advertiser for a full photo-report on Frank’s retirement party.
Next phase of Beaufort pipe replacement on tap The final phase of the Mid Kerry Rural Water Supply Sanitation /Beaufort Area water pipe replacement scheme is set be completed this year.
Killarney Parkrun is relocating to the grounds of Killarney House on July 20th After five years at Muckross House tomorrow’s (Saturday) run will be the last one before relocating to the new venue the following week. “A town centre location just makes sense, “ event director Philip Gammell told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was
too far out for townspeople and tourists would not even know where to find us.” Michael Gleeson, Mayor of Killarney, Jimmy Deenihan, the former minister who launched the original park run five years ago will attend the launch of the event on July 20.
Irish Water and Kerry County Council have already completed 22Km of mains replacement at a cost of almost €4 million. Much of this work was concentrated on the western leg through Kilgobnet and Meanus to Killorglin and Milltown, and in Shannera and Cappagh North. Work was also carried out to replace almost 8Km of water mains from Glencuttane Cross to Ardmoniel and Annadale
bridge, Killorglin on the Breanlee Water Supply Scheme. Irish Water confirmed this week that further pipe replacement works at Cooleanig Beaufort are scheduled for this year. “I have been calling for improvements to the Mid Kerry Water Scheme for a long time and I am glad that Government Funding has resulted in significant progress in recent years,” said Cllr. Patrick O'Connor-Scarteen.

BUSINESS WEEK OF
THE
Celebrity chef meets an internet influencer One of Killarney’s newest restaurants is set for some unprecedented publicity thanks to a visit by one of New York’s most influential food journalists. Malarkey on New Street was opened five weeks ago by celebrity chef Seamus O’Connell, the star of the RTÉ’s Soul Food cookery programme. Last week he was paid a surprise visit by Amy Currie, a seasoned New York City food stylist, recipe developer, and culinary producer with over five years of training in food television, video production, and recipe development across web, editorial, and commercial industries. She will publish her findings across a range of US-based websites and publications. “I am just visiting Killarney on holiday and this restaurant just stood out.” Currie told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are looking for traditional Irish food, but just like any culture food follows tradition passed through generations and I feel Seamus takes that tradition and makes it modern. I have worked with all the famous US chefs and Seamus certainly has a great history and talent.” Back in 2018 Currie won a James Beard Media Award for producing an internet-screened instructional video. The James Beard Foundation, the culinary industry’s most prestigious recognition programme honours America’s
top cookbook authors, culinary broadcast producers and hosts, and food industry journalists. Born in Arizona, O'Connell's grandparents hail from the Glencar area. He arrived in Killarney via New York and Michelin-stared restaurants in France. In 1993 he opened the Ivory Tower in Cork but decided to close that earlier this year and set up in New Street. “Amy and I are on the same page when it comes to food, which is very exciting,” added O’Connell. “If you are looking for the elusive Irish experience, Malarkey is the place.” Malarkey is open from Wednesday to Sunday 5pm to 10pm. Seamus offers a set menu for €30 alongside a superb tasting menu and an a la carte offering. It’s modern Irish cooking at it’s best in a relaxed dining experience. Book your next food experience with Malarkey on 064 6622566 or through Facebook. Highly recommended. 40 New Street, Killarney www.malarkey.ie
Killarney businesses attend UK-led business partnerships launch in Coventry | By Sean Moriarty
Liebherr Container Cranes was one of the many Kerry businesses that attended the UK launch of the British Embassy-led programme called ‘Joining the Dots’ that is aimed to encourage business partnerships and collaboration between the southwest of Ireland and the UK. The launch took place last Wednesday (July 3) at the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry England and is the second phase in the programme, following a successful launch in November 2018 with the Cork Chamber of Commerce. At that time it was announced that Kerry and Limerick would be included in future projects and last week’s meeting was the first step in fulfilling that commitment. The delegation included Kerry County Council and major global companies UK Ambassador to Ireland, Robin Barnett with Brendan Tuohy, Pat O'Leary (Liebherr) and Moira Murrell (Kerry County Council)
and innovative indigenous firms including Fexco, Liebherr, the Agri-Tech Centre of Excellence and Tralee Chamber Alliance.“Today's report launch is the next stage in our Joining the Dots
journey and builds on the enthusiasm shown at the Irish launch in Cork last year. For companies in the South West of Ireland, the report highlights that the UK remains a key target market
with untapped opportunities. Similarly, Ireland is seen as a logical first step for many UK companies seeking to test their capability in overseas markets,” said the British Ambassador to Ireland, Robin Barnett. “The South west of Ireland is a region with an exciting future and the strength and quality of the delegation is a testament to the appetite for this initiative. I am delighted that in addition to a strong Cork contingent, we are welcoming senior business and government representatives from Limerick, Kerry and elsewhere in Ireland.” The report launch was followed by two panel discussions where attendees heard from Moira Murrell, Chief Executive of Kerry County Council discuss the subject of ‘Creating thriving regional economies’ and from and Pat O’Leary, Liebherr, on ‘Doing business in the Midlands and South West of Ireland.’

Now in its seventh year, the 54321 Challenge sees participants taking on five separate challenges, over four days, for three different charities, including climbing Kerry’s two highest mountains over the course of one long weekend. The challenge will take place between Thursday August 22 and Sunday August 25. Teams of five will cycle the Ring of Kerry on the opening day. The second day they will scale Carrantuohill but as the challenge moves to its third day things get even more difficult. On the Saturday they will cycle from Killarney to the foot of Mount Brandon and then climb Kerry’s second highest peak. The final day will see the participants cycle from Dingle back to Killarney.
“The Challenge is now entering its seventh year and has raised €140,000 to date,” said organiser TJ O’Connor. “This year we are welcoming six teams of five people to take part in this epic challenge to raise much needed money to support three very deserving Kerry Charities,

Declan and Pat O’Hara: Anyone can cycle the Ring of Kerry once but to do it twice in two days is taking things to another level. But that is exactly what brothers Declan and Pat O’Hara did. They completed the 175km route on Friday as a pair before joining the 5,598 other cyclists on Saturday morning.

There were many heroes on Saturday’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. Every one of the 6,000 cyclists that entered the 36th running of the event deserve to be called heroes, those who finished the 175km course even more so. But there are a few more that went beyond that. Here is the Killarney Advertiser’s pick of our heroes of the event.
Chris Slevin: The American Paralympian, from Boston, is wheelchair user for 12 years, since she suffered a spinal cord injury while snowboarding used a hand-cycle to complete the 175km route – helped by her service dog Earle.
Philip Willners: Philip Willners from Gotland, Sweden, who cycled his 2000 km journey from Sweden to raise awareness about Climate Change. He arrived in Killarney on Friday evening ahead of the 36th Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle.
Team Amy: Brendan and Triona O’Connor entered a team in to this year’s cycle, in memory of their daughter and to raise money for Recovery Haven Cancer Support.

WASTE DISPOSAL BYELAWS Under new Byelaws, currently under consultation within the County of Kerry, all householders will be asked to produce written proof of using an authorised waste service. The Byelaws provide for a penalty of no more that €2,500.00 for
a person found guilty of contravention of the Byelaws. It also provides for a fixed payment notice to be issued. Furthermore, it provides that where a contravention of any provision of the Byelaws continues after a person has been subject to a fine, a person found guilty of an offence relating to this continued contravention shall be liable to a penalty of no more than €500.00 per day for each day of the contravention continues after that conviction. Killarney Hoteliers call for urgent action on rising insurance costs Hoteliers in Killarney are calling on the Government to take urgent action to address the spiralling cost of insurance, which is posing a serious challenge for the local hospitality industry. Bernadette Randles, Chair of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation stated that hotels have experienced enormous increases in insurance premiums in recent years and that costs are continuing to soar as a result of excessive levels of awards for personal injury claims. She is also calling for dedicated Garda resource specifically created and tasked with investigating fraudulent insurance cases for potential prosecution. A bill to allow judges recalibrate compensation awards has been passed by the Seanad. The aim of the Judicial Council Bill is to provide for the establishment of a Judicial Council and provides sentencing guidelines for judges for the first time. According to research by the IHF, 62% of hotels have seen hikes in insurance costs over the last 12 months. Of these, the average increase in premiums was 28% year on year. This is in addition to substantial increases in recent years. Some 90% of hotels say they are con-
cerned about the impact of insurance costs on their business. “Current increases are unsustainable. Exorbitant insurance costs are curtailing the ability of hotels to re-invest in their businesses with knock-on effects for the tourism industry,” said Ms Randles. “While we welcome this legislation, it is imperative that it results in a meaningful review of levels of damages without delay.” Further research by the IHF show that personal injury cases and the excessive levels of awards being made are four to five times higher than in the UK. “Another key area that must be addressed is the levels of fraudulent and exaggerated claims. A zero-tolerance approach needs to be adopted in order to create an effective deterrent. This requires the funding of a dedicated central Garda resource specifically created and tasked with investigating fraudulent cases for potential prosecution,” she added.

Kell’s Bay surprise for Glenflesk wedding guests

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

They came from Cork, Limerick, Offaly, Wexford, Dublin, and Donegal. They even came from England, Wales, Canada, Australia, and Holland.
But when Glenflesk man Aodhan O Donoghue turned the corner in Kell’s Bay as he made his way to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Foilmore to marry his sweetheart Katie Murphy the last thing he expected were blue and yellow flags of his home GAA club flying along the road. Katie organised the flags to welcome her new family and friends to her district and this was just the first of many happy memories the couple made on the day. After Father Kieran O Brien completed the official ceremony the happy couple and their guests made the long journey to the Heights Hotel, Killarney for the party proper. Eileen and Con Murphy, parents of the bride, joined Bridie and Michael O Donoghue, parent of the groom, as the celebration continued through the shortest night of the year (June 21) – although the guests may say it was the
longest night of the year – such was the fun and craic that went on. The Maid of Honour was Trish O Shea, and bridesmaids Gillian D'alton, Niamh O Sullivan and Amy Golden. Bestman duties fell to Johnny Russell, while the groomsmen were Karl Foley (who arrived from Canada), Paudie McCarthy and Kieran O Donoghue. The pageboy was Michael Murphy (nephew of the bride) and the ushers were Matthew Murphy and Rhys Danter. Sister of the groom Maria and her husband Tim came from Australia “The day went by so quickly, but having everyone we loved in the same room together was a great feeling,” said Katie. “Taking a moment together in the evening as husband and wife, seeing everyone enjoying themselves was a memory we will treasure.”

Clematis plants add colour One of the most versatile and popular climbing plants there is, is the Clematis. It is also a plant about which there are many questions, regarding varieties, flowering and pruning. There is a clematis for every time of year, starting with the early spring flowering Montana ‘Rubens’, a very easy and fast-growing variety. It has pretty, open flowers, ‘Frances Rivis’ has blue bell-shaped flowers, which appear in April. Last year, I planted ‘Pink Flamingo’, which also has bell-shaped flowers of the brightest cerise. It is a quick grower, and hardy, flowering early May even in the harsh conditions my garden presents it with. Many of the early flowering varieties have flowers which are bell shaped, such as those already mentioned, but also ‘Freckles’, white with pinkish spots, and ‘White Columbine’, pure white. Most of these are followed by fluffy seed heads, which are decorative in themselves. Coming into summer we are spoilt for choice, most varieties now having the large, open showy flowers we know Clematis for. ‘Picardy’ is one of my favourite, having dark blue flowers which fade to a pale mauve. ‘Kaen’ is an unusual variety, it has slightly twisted petals in pink tinged with green. ‘Sieboldii’ has pure white petals with purple inner petals, beautiful! ‘Ville de Lyon’ is an oldie but goodie, with maroon flowers which fade to a dusky pink. Later into summer, early autumn, there is also plenty of choice, for example ‘Ernest Markham’ dark pink, ‘Princess Diana’ dark pink, cerise tulip shaped flowers – stunning. ‘Gypsy Queen’ has large purple/blue flowers.
There are also evergreen Clematis available, such as ‘Apple Blossom’, with waxy pale pink flowers very early in spring. Armandii has long strappy leaves, is incredibly hardy and has scented white flowers in March. Cirrhosa ‘Advent Bells’ flowers from November to February and is very easy to grow. Clematis are divided into 12 groups, depending on their flower types, how they grow and many other factors. However, for the gardener, it is more important to know their pruning groups, of which there are three. These are related to their flowering times. Pruning group 1: these flower on old wood, and only need pruning to tidy them up. Cut back when all danger of frost is over. Spring flowering clematis are in this group. Group 2: tidy up in early spring, and prune back after the first flush of flowers, to encourage a second flush later in the summer. Pruning group 3: these are the late flowering varieties, which flower at the end of the current year’s growth. Cut them back in February, to the strongest, lowest, pair of buds. These are generally vigorous growers and will end up being a huge mess if not kept under control. Clematis like their roots to be cool. Traditionally, when growing against a wall, an old rooftile is placed over the base, to protect roots from the sun. They like well drained yet moisture retentive soil. Gravelly dry soil often results in wilting, and large parts of the plant dying back. Clematis wilt is often blamed, but this only affects large flowered varieties, and is not as common as soil which is too wet, too dry or has vine-weevils in it. Slugs also love clematis, so keep an eye out for them in the spring, especially.

The Border By Diarmaid Ferriter RELEASED: FEBRUARY 2019 This could be the most important book of the year. As Irish and British politicians, now off on their extra-long summer break, continue to play indecision on the future of the border ahead the UK’s Brexit at the end of October, there is a need to understand exactly what the border is, and why it is such a vital part of the future of both countries post-Brexit. For the past two decades you could cross the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic half a dozen times without noticing or, indeed, turning off the road you were travelling. It cuts through fields, winds back-and-forth across roads, and wends from Carlingford Lough to Lough Foyle. It is frictionless —a feat sealed by the Good Friday Agreement. Before that, watchtowers loomed over border communities, military checkpoints dotted the roads,
and smugglers slipped between jurisdictions. This is a past that most are happy to have left behind but might it also be the future? The border has been a topic of dispute for over a century, first in Dublin, Belfast and Westminster and, post Brexit referendum,

Best known for his character Bottler, he also starred in the hit TV sit-com Father Ted as exiled priest Fr.Fintan. The Irish showbiz legend was an integral part of the Killarney social scene and was a regular fixture at the INEC over the years. When the late Maurice O’Donoghue was putting Killarney and

"We are greatly saddened to learn of the passing of our great friend Brendan Grace. Brendan worked hard to bring happiness and laughter to generations of Gleneagle guests. We are eternally grateful to him for creating so many

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís," Patrick O'Donoghue, CEO of The Glenagle Group told the Killarney Advertiser. He usually stayed at the International Hotel where head porter Frank O’Sullivan has fond memories of the Dubliner. “He would come back year after year but would always remember us by name,” said Frank. He was also a regular customer at Handy Stores where staff member Frances Healy remembered his generosity. “I remember singing a few songs with him in the store,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “He was very generous. He used to send down CDs for the staff and the jarveys. He would name each individual jarvey that he wanted to give the CDs to and he would follow up with a letter thanking us for our time when we were only delighted to have him here in the first place.” Kerry County Council will open a Book of Condolences for the late Brendan Grace at the Killarney Municipal District Office, Main Street, Killarney from 9am today (Friday July 12). The Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Michael Gleeson expressed his condolences to the Grace family, saying that Brendan Grace had a long and much-valued association with Killarney. ‘Brendan Grace was a larger than life figure who brought so much happiness and enjoyment to so many people, not least during his many performances in Killarney and County Kerry over the years.
We are happy to afford this opportunity to people who wish to record their condolences to do so through our Killarney office at the Town Hall. We extend our deepest sympathies to Brendan’s family and friends at this sad time,’ said Cllr Gleeson. He died in the US, where he lived. He was diagnosed with lung cancer just over 10 days ago.

Trump deleting Climate Change references from official documents A worrying trend, exposed by USbased online magazine ScienceMay.Org, has revealed that the Trump administration is tampering with state studies to mask the potential impact of climate change. The magazine’s finding centre on a news release from the U.S. Geological Survey in relation to infrastructure planning along the California coastline. The release showed potential economic benefits for the State of California but omitted some key environmental issues that were
highlighted in the earlier report. An earlier draft of the press release, which was put online by the environmental group Point Blue Conservation Science, a participant in the study, compared the possible effect on Californians of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The release fits a pattern of downplaying climate research at USGS and in other agencies within the administration. “It's been made clear to us that we're not supposed to use climate change in press releases anymore.
They will not be authorised,” one federal researcher told the on-line magazine. He was speaking anonymously for fear of reprisal. A release in 2017 that publicised a study on how polar bears were expending more energy due to a loss of sea ice did not mention climate change. It noted that a “moving treadmill of sea ice” in the warming Arctic forced polar bears to hunt for more seals and placed pressure on their population in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas.

Shannon Airport is celebrating it's 80th anniversary

60th Anniversary of Women Joining An Garda Síochána An Garda Síochána is this week commemorating the 60th anniversary of women joining as Garda members at an event in Farmleigh in Dublin. In July 1959, following a long-running campaign by civic groups and with the support of the then Garda Commissioner and Government, 12 women joined An Garda Siochana and were allocated to Pearse Street Station. Since then, women have made a crucial contribution to the organisation as well as society. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said today, "Sixty years ago these pioneers of policing in Ireland took the brave and honourable step of becoming a Garda and, in doing so, not only helped protect the communities they served, but also inspired many other women to follow in
their footstep,” "We have come a long way since the first 12 women joined An Garda Síochána in July 1959. Female representation within the ranks of An Garda Síochána is strong. Women perform duty across the whole range of operational units and bureaus. Every day the women of An Garda Síochána make a positive difference to individuals and the communities this organisation serves across the country and further afield.” There are currently 3,780 females making up 27% of Garda members. This is above the European average for female representation within police services. In addition, 26% of the Garda reserve are female and 76% of Garda staff are also female.
Some 80 years ago to the day a Belgian airliner - tri-motor Sabena Davoia Marchetti S-73 – landed on the newly opened and then named Rineanna airfield and gave lift-off to what would soon after become known as Shannon Airport and an economic transformation of a region. Fast forward 80 years and Shannon Airport is today Ireland’s second-largest long-haul airport, the only one outside the capital offering direct flights to all key Irish markets – the UK, European mainland and US. It plays a critical role in facilitating and driving economic growth, with over 40% of US FDI companies in Ireland within the airport’s catchment. All of this grew from what is by today’s standards a very modest arrival of eight passengers and crew on board the Belgian airliner but by 1930’s standards a moment of wonder in rural west of Ireland. The passengers were greeted with cheers from the assembled staff of the fledgling airport before they were whisked to Foynes to board the Pan American’s ‘Yankee Clipper’ Boeing 314 flight bound for New York. The news spread quickly of the presence of the Belgian airliner at Rineanna and by the time the crew returned later that night for their return trip, up to 500 people had gathered to watch its takeoff on the return journey to Croydon in the south of England and then onto Brussels. By 1942, a serviceable airport had been achieved and was named Shannon Airport. By 1945 the existing runways at Shannon were extended to allow transatlantic flights. “We are hugely proud of history here at Shannon, and our pioneering reputation
Shannon Airport Terminal
is recognised and respected across the world of aviation. Shannon Airport was the first European gateway for transatlantic flights and over the past eight decades we have welcomed every serving US President, royalty, famous actors and musicians along with tens of millions of international travellers,” said Mary Considine, Acting CEO, Shannon Group Today Shannon International Airport has the longest runway in Ireland at 3,200 metres and is the only Irish airport that can accommodate the world’s largest jet, the Antonov AN 225. Other major milestones included it becoming, in 2009, the first airport in the worldoutside of the Americas, to provide full US Preclearance facilities, while in 2017 Shannon become the first airport in the world to open a sensory room for passengers with autism or special needs.
Tralee native aims to be the first Kerry woman to swim the English Channel Elaine Burrows Dillane will set off from Kent in England in early September with the aim of reaching France and thereby becoming the first Kerry woman to swim the English Channel. As part of this record-breaking attempt, Elaine is fundraising for Brain Tumour Ireland, a cause close to her heart. Some years ago, a close family friend of Elaine’s was diagnosed with a brain tumour as a four-year old child. Thankfully today this child is now a grown up with a family of his own. As a result, Elaine is inspired by the work of Brain Tumour
Ireland and wanted to do something to support them, particularly in the area of paediatrics. “It has been a lifelong ambition of mine to swim the English Channel. Life’s commitments prevented me from attempting the swim sooner and therefore finding the courage and desire to do it now had to be inspired by something special. This something special is looking after and admiring our own two amazing healthy children and the wonderful work that Brain Tumour Ireland does for young children and their families affected by life threat-
ening brain tumours. Every length of the pool, every kilometre in the sea, every minute in the gym is the commitment I am willing to make to do my bit for a wonderful organisation,” said Elaine. Founded in 2012, Brain Tumour Ireland is a national registered charity working to inform and support brain tumour patients and their families. Brain Tumour Ireland also fundraises for brain tumour research. Ms Burrows Dillane is no stranger to daring sea swim feats, and, in the summer of 2017, she became the first woman to swim from Blennerville to
Fenit (Co. Kerry) and back (16k). In 2018 she took on an even bigger challenge, accomplishing what no other woman had done before, swimming a total of 21k from Blennerville to the Maharees. She arrived to the Maharees, having spent six hours and thirty-four minutes, non-stop, swimming without a wetsuit.

Cannonball Run to pass through Killarney Keep an eye out for classical 1980s sports cars on the roads of Kerry this weekend. The new for 2019 Retro Cannonball Classic Run visits today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday). The run is open to cars from the 1960s through to 1990s. The classic run starts in Kinsale today and takes in Healy Pass, Kenmare, Moll's Gap, Inch Beach, Dingle, Slea Head, Conor Pass, Tralee and finishes at Bunratty Castle on Saturday. A Ferrari Testarossa, a Ford Capri, a Sierra Cosworth, a Porsche 911 SC, a Mini Cooper, a Mercedes SL Convertible, a MGB and many more are among the
group of sports cars expected in Killarney on Friday afternoon as they make their way from Molls’ Gap to their overnight halt in Dingle via Inch beach. “The all new Retro Cannonball Classic Run featuring cars from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s takes us back to our roots when the mad-cap Cannonball Movie was made,” says Cannonball founder Alan Bannon. “We are going allout retro and welcoming cars from this golden era to take in stunning drives and world-famous rally routes. Classic runs are a longstanding tradition steeped in nostalgia and pop culture and we want to add our own Cannonball twist to make this a truly unforgettable experience for both drivers and spectators.”
Buying a car from the UK? You need to talk to your local Credit Union. Second-hand imported cars from the UK continue to rise in popularity with the Irish consumer. In fact, the latest Consumer Market Monitor reports that second-hand cars imported from the UK will overtake the number of new cars sold in Ireland for the first time ever this year. “While we in the credit union are firm believers that shopping locally for a car is the best way to go, with some terrific value to be had, we are seeing a surge in car loan queries from people considering buying from the UK. We would urge anyone considering going to the UK to talk to us in your local credit union in the
first instance. Our car loan is straightforward, affordable and fair with a great value APR rate,” says Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer at Killarney Credit Union. “When you arrange finance with us here at the credit union, you are effectively going as a cash buyer to the car dealer, and may well be able to negotiate a better deal. There are also other advantages, including fast approval, flexible terms and there will never be any hidden charges or fees. You can also order your sterling straight from the credit union and get covered with travel insurance should anything happen while you are travelling to/from the UK.”

Rarely seen Eastern European cars on Kerry tour Several cars of Eastern European origin were spotted on the roads of Kerry last week. They were taking part in the Zlombol Charity rally—a unique event open only to cars built or designed during the communist era. Zlombol (which loosely translates to junk ball) is a Polish car event which has being going for 13 years. Each year the rally starts in the Polish city of Katowice but has a different finishing location each year. This year Dublin was the chosen finish line and joined such notable locations as Monte Carlo, Loret de Mer, Loch Ness and even the Arctic Circle. Participants are given just the start and
finish location of each day’s section and must plot their own route to each day’s finish line. The event finished in Dublin last Wednesday but some of the participants chose to extend their stay and visited some of the well-known driving roads in the Killarney region. Only cars manufactured in the former Eastern Block during the communist era or after the transformation of 1989, but having roots in the former are allowed to take part in the competition. The car should be bought for less than €250. That's why rare cars like Polski Fiats, Ladas and other odd-ball and rarely seen Eastern European cars were seen in Kerry last week.

Killarney Community Games MUNSTER: The Killarney U10 Community Games football team performed very well in the Munster Final in Na Gaeil, Tralee last Saturday and ended the day silver medal winners for Munster. The team won a thrilling semi-final in the morning against a very physical Clare team 5-5 to 4-5 and were 10 points down at one stage but performed a brilliant comeback to win by 3 points in the end. Unfortunately the victory came with a cost as key players were injured for the final v Cork but again showed great character in the final and finished the game strongly but unfortunately just lost to a very good Cork side. In loving memory of Joan and Roger (Roddy) O’Donoghue, Late of High Street Killarney, Joan who died on the 11th of July, 2000 and Roddy who died on the 6th of July 2012. We also remember at this time Roddy’s Birthday which falls on July 12th.
In loving memory of Christy O’Donoghue, 22 O’Kelly’s Villas, Killarney, Who passed away on 24th May 2014. And his wife Maura O’Donoghue Who passed away on the 23rd August,2017.
No words we write can ever say, How much we miss ye everyday, No one knows the grief we bare, When the family gather and ye’re not there, We laugh, we talk, we play the part, But beyond the sorrow is a broken heart, The sorrow we feel we can never explain, And the ache in our hearts will always remain.
Remember them with a smile today, They weren’t ones for tears, Reflect instead on memories, Of all the happy years, Recall to mind the way they spoke, And all the things they said, There strength, there wisdom, the way they were, Remember them instead.
Forever in our thoughts and prayers, your loving family.
Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Miriam & Ollie, Anna Marie & Vincent, Timothy & Katie, and grandchildren.

SPORT Kill or be killed It’s survival of the fittest as Kerry face Mayo in Super 8s From the moment the idea for the Super 8s came to light, we dreamt of days like this. Mayo at home in Killarney in a must-win championship clash. If you’re not excited about this game then please stop reading and leave town immediately. We don’t take kindly to your sort around here.
Super 8s (Group 1)
Kerry v Mayo
Sunday at 4pm Fitzgerald Stadium The irony of this fixture is that even though it’s technically the start of a round robin series that will see each side take to the field three times over a fourweek period, in reality it could well signal the end of one team’s season. Ulster champions Donegal are arguably the form team in the country and they’ll
be strong favourites to top Group 1 and advance to the semi-final. That leaves just one semi-final spot up for grabs and two into one does not go. Well, it does, but you would need to half Mayo and Kerry and if there’s any county getting divided in two, it’s not us. Of course, we’re being a touch disrespectful to Meath by suggesting that it’s simply a three-horse race. The Division 2 champions are in the last eight on merit on the back of their run to the Leinster final and they had some good moments in last weekend’s victory over Clare in Round 4 of the Qualifiers.
But The Royal County are rank outsiders and you would expect them to have nothing to play for by the time they face Kerry in the last game of the Super 8s. Peter Keane, meanwhile, will naturally be hoping that Kerry still have it all to play for when they head up to Páirc Tailteann on the August Bank Holiday weekend. For now, his focus will be entirely on the Mayo conundrum. And what a conundrum it is. James Horan’s side are unquestionably the game’s great entertainers, which is a roundabout way of saying that they’re very good while also being wildly unpredictable. Unpredictability doesn’t usually lend itself to success but after years of coming up short, Mayo slung that particularly irritating monkey from their back by winning the National League final in Croke Park in March.
They were dumped out of Connacht by Roscommon in May and plenty of observers have written them off in the days and weeks since, but here they are, back from the dead, descending upon Killarney like a horde of hungry zombies. Actually, that’s not a fair comparison. Zombies are much slower. And far less cynical. You would have to be impressed with how Mayo acquitted themselves in the Qualifiers. They got the better of Armagh despite being down a number of bodies and as for last Saturday, don’t let the scoreline fool you. They hammered Galway. Cian O’Connor was back to his infuriatingly efficient best, Darren Coen was a constant threat and James Carr’s wondergoal will go down as one of the moments of the championship. They are still without Matthew Ruane and Diarmuid O’Connor but the unex-

GAA should apologise to fans for ticket fiasco Kerry supporters were left completely in the dark on Monday morning when tickets for this Sunday’s Super 8s match against Mayo failed to appear online or in-store. The fixture, which will take place in the Fitzgerald Stadium, is the most eagerly anticipated sporting event of the year in Killarney and demand for tickets was expected to be high. Dozens of fans arrived at regular GAA ticket outlet SuperValu at 10am but they were left baffled when they were told that no tickets were available. One fan, a pensioner (read his letter below), says that approximately 70 fans had gathered by midday. Many stayed queuing for hours with no word from the GAA as to when tickets would be available for purchase. An official Kerry GAA tweet sent out at 9.40am said that tickets could now be purchased online on the GAA section of tickets.ie. However, when they clicked the link, fans were greeted with a message saying that, ‘There are no tickets available at this time. Please check later.’ Kerry GAA’s tweet was quickly deleted. Fans who refreshed the Kerry v Mayo event page at 10am – the same time the other Super 8s games were scheduled to go on sale – reported that the page didn’t load for 20 minutes. When it did, the same message appeared. Eventually, at
55
10.30am, Kerry and Mayo fans browsing on mobile were informed that, ‘This event was not found in the database’. Tickets for the other Super 8s games then became available but Kerry v Mayo was completely removed from the website. For their part, tickets.ie responded to several angry complaints on Twitter by saying that they were “awaiting word from the GAA as to when these [Kerry v Mayo tickets] will go on sale”. At 12.15pm, Kerry GAA sent out the following tweet: “We know people are frustrated regarding the ticket situation. Tickets are issued by Croke Park not Kerry GAA. We have been told that it will be the afternoon at the earliest before they become available. As soon as we get more information, we will make it available.” Tickets eventually went on sale online and at SuperValu and the Kerry GAA Store at around 4pm. Whatever was going on behind the scenes, the lack of communication from the GAA is incredible. To leave so many dedicated supporters waiting for so long with no indication as to what was going on was incredibly disrespectful. At time of going to print, there was still no explanation forthcoming. An apology is the least these fans deserve.
Letter to the Editor Playing in Killarney should be a help, although you’re likely to see as much green and red as green and gold in the Park on Sunday.
pectedly quick return of Lee Keegan is a major boost. You can expect him to be pestering some poor Kerry player to within an inch of his life on Sunday. Don’t ask me how but Kerry are 8/15 favourites for this game. I know the bookies don’t often get things wrong but Mayo have beaten Kerry twice already this year and they have momentum coming through the back door, so it’s hard to get your head around that one. The Kingdom, meanwhile, laboured at times against Clare and Cork and while there’s no denying that the future is looking bright, this Kerry team is not the finished article.
Crucially for Peter Keane, James O’Donoghue is back in contention following a hamstring injury and if Kerry can attack the Mayo rearguard at pace, and get enough ball to the danger men like O’Donoghue and David Clifford, they’ll be in with a chance. But against Mayo, that’s only half the battle. Kerry will need huge performances from their midfielders and half backs in order to repel the tidal wave that is Mayo’s running game. Fail in this department and it could be a very long afternoon indeed for Kerry’s full back line. I think the odds are slightly in Mayo’s favour but whatever happens, it should be a cracking game at the home of football. Can’t wait.
I wish to bring to your attention the disrespect shown by the Croke Park administrators in their utter failure to communicate the approximate time when tickets for the Kerry v Mayo game would become available. Tickets for all the other hurling and football games were available at SuperValu at 10am on Monday, however the tickets for the Killarney game were not available until 4.30pm. I will briefly outline my personal experience on Monday. At 10am I entered SuperValu at Park Road, Killarney and joined a queue numbering approximately 15 people at the desk. At 10.45am there were 50 people in the queue, and there were approximately 70 people in the queue at 12 midday. At this stage there was still no information whatsoever on when the tickets would be available online. Several people in the queue emailed Croke Park requesting information but no reply was forthcoming. At approximately 2pm, some of the people in the queue left and approximately 30 people remained in the hope that the tickets would be forthcoming
soon. Some of these people (including myself) were pensioners. The young lady at the checkout kindly supplied two chairs for two ladies. At 3pm, a message via telephone was received to the effect that tickets would be available “later” and probably the following morning (i.e. Tuesday). As the message from Croke Park was not specific, some in the queue remained standing beside the checkout until 3.30pm. I was the last to leave, empty-handed, having remained standing for a full five and a half hours. To say the least, the Killarney ticket-purchasers were treated by the GAA with disrespect. The absence of information as to the approximate time the tickets would be available online was inept and disrespectful. Yours, (Name and contact details provided)

Keep ball
Listen online at soundcloud.com/advertisersport
Crokes keeper Murphy would consider playing outfield if back pass is banned
ball. It takes a lot of the skill and a lot of the tactics out of the game.” When asked if the option of the goalkeeper was giving backs an easy way out and ultimately discouraging forward kicking, Murphy had an interesting take.
Shane Murphy has warned that the GAA’s proposed ban on passing the ball back to the goalkeeper will not only discourage young players from playing in goal, it may also force current keepers to pursue a career out the field – himself included.
“It’s absolutely ridiculous,”
“I’d say that 90% of keepers would be more comfortable on the ball than the corner back. Your good, solid, man-marking corner back might not necessarily be great on the ball. It might benefit the team if he gives it to the keeper and lets him kick it out or carry it out.
“Becoming a goalkeeper is actually an attractive position nowadays. It’s an important position and people actually want to do it. Before, it was the fat kid who went in goals, and that’s probably the way I started myself.
“I just don’t see how this proposed rule change could possibly benefit the game. It’ll discourage young fellas from playing in goal, and it’ll discourage people who are playing in goals at the moment. I’d nearly chance my arm outfield if that came in.”
Speaking to this journalist in the first ever Killarney Advertiser Sport podcast, which can be found on Soundcloud and via @AdamMoynihan on Twitter, the Dr Crokes netminder joined fellow stoppers Niall Morgan and Rory Beggan in criticising the radical new plan to exclude goalkeepers from open play.
history, doesn’t see the merit in even trialling the back pass ban.
he said.
GAA President John Horan is keen on the move having reviewed data from 20 National League games which showed that there was an average of 10 back passes to the goalkeeper per match.
“I don’t know how he (John Horan) is even contemplating bringing it in. Maybe the one where the keeper takes a short kickout and it’s punched back to him inside the 21, maybe cut that out. Maybe the keeper can’t receive the ball from outside the 21, back in. That wouldn’t be too bad. But let’s say a corner back is under pressure on the endline. He can’t pass it across to the keeper? It makes no sense.”
“If you think about it, if you take out the goalkeeper as the safety valve behind the defence it then allows the team to press forward much more and actually draw them out instead of going back behind,” Horan was recently quoted as saying.
Murphy is part of a new generation of goalkeepers who have revolutionised the game with their ball skills and accurate kicking and the Crokes No. 1 says that curtailing these keepers now would detract from the game, not add to it.
Murphy, who played intercounty with Kerry in 2018 and has been a mainstay for Dr Crokes during the most successful period in the club’s
“Most goalkeepers are ball players these days. They’re well able to kick it and carry it. Why would you take that away?
In spite of the widespread opposition, the proposed new rule change could go before a special congress which is due to take place in Páirc Uí Chaoimh in October. Rule changes related to the attacking mark, kickouts from the 20-metre line, the ban on backwards sidelines and a 10-minute sin bin for black card offences will also be voted on, as will the new two-tiered championship format which is expected to be in place for 2020. The GAA have also announced plans to complete next year’s All-Ireland Club Championships by January with a view to bringing the finals back to December for 2021.
“I don’t think it slows down the game. It does make the kickout, at times, a bit easier, and that can slow it down a bit. But they’re getting way too bogged down with trying to get the keeper to lamp the ball again. That’s just a 50/50

Strong Killarney interest in famed Sligo Rally This Sunday’s Sligo Rally has attracted the strongest Kerry entry for a rally outside of Munster so far this year. Up to ten cars representing The Kingdom look set to tackle the fourth round of the locally sponsored Top Part Motor Factors West Coast Rally Championship and several Kerry crews will tackle this weekend’s Sligo Stages. Killarney’s Colin O’Donoghue, fresh from his Junior class victory on the recent Raven’s Rock Rally, is entered in his Ford Escort and will be hoping for a repeat success in the competitive category. Killarney and District Motor Club’s Daniel Cronin makes a welcome return in his Ford Fiesta R5, his first outing since his short-lived Rally of the Lakes outing in May. Co-driver Brian Doherty (Glenflesk) is in action alongside New Yorker Paul Rowley in another Ford Fiesta R5 while Killarney-based school teacher Elaine Ní Shé competes alongside Gary Cooney in a Subaru Impreza World Rally Car. Newcomer Billy McCarthy with his Gneevegullia neighbour Donagh Crowley are another all-Kerry crew to make the long journey up the West Coast in their Nissan Micra. Tralee’s Eoin Duffin and Mike Quinn continue their partnership on-board Duffin’s Ford Escort Mk2. The pair are the leading all-Kerry driver/co-driver combination on the entry list. Entries remain open and more Kerry crews are expected to take part in the event.
Frankie Dettori is set to make his Killarney Racecourse debut next week.
Racing legend Dettori to ride in Killarney for very first time Legendary jockey Frankie Dettori is confirmed to ride at Killarney Racecourse next Wednesday, July 17, the third day of their five-day July Festival. This will be the first time the Italian jockey has ridden at the County Kerry racecourse. The 48-year-old Italian-born, British-based jockey, who is known for his distinctive ‘flying dismounts’ is one of racing’s most successful jockeys. He has won all the major flat races around the world including multiple group and classic races in Ireland. Frankie is having a fantastic flat season in Britain. He was crowned leading rider at the recent Royal Ascot meeting with a tally of seven winners. He also rode the dual Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Enable to win the Group 1 Coral Eclipse
at Sandown Park last Saturday. The five-day festival at Killarney runs from Monday, July 15 to Friday, July 19 and among the winners at the corresponding fixture 12 months ago was recent Epsom Derby hero Anthony Van Dyck. The 2017 Epsom Derby winner Wings Of Eagles is another Killarney graduate, he landed his maiden success at the course in August 2016. “We are absolutely thrilled to have Frankie ride at Killarney Racecourse on
Wednesday,” said Philip O’Brien, Racing Manager at Killarney Racecourse. “He is a household name who transcends the confines of racing and we are delighted that racegoers will get the chance to see such a racing legend in the flesh. It will definitely be the highlight of our July Festival and we are looking forward to a few of his famous flying dismounts in County Kerry.” For further information and tickets see www.killarneyraces.ie.

Paul Nagle and Craig Breen drove the Hyundai i20 World Rally Car they will use on this weekend’s Rally Estonia and next month’s Rally Finland for the first time on Saturday. The Kerry/Waterford crew tested the car at Tommi Makinen Racing’s test facility near Puupola, in the same region as where Rally Finland is based as part of their pre-event preparation for this
weekend and their World Rally Championship return in early August. This year Breen and Nagle have been contesting high-class events all over Europe but their main goal was a return to the sport’s top level. So far they have won international rallies in Ireland, Belgium and Italy. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to work with Hyundai, a team with massive WRC ambitions,” said Breen. “I got to meet some of the engineers and most of the team
and they couldn’t have made Paul and myself more welcome.” The crew’s first event as part of two-event deal is this weekend’s Shell Helix Rally Estonia. Based in Tartu, the second largest city in Estonia, the event will run on Saturday and Sunday over fast gravel roads with lots of crests and jumps. |
