Three in court on “feud” charges

A man appeared before a court this week charged with brandishing a golf club in the “course of a feud”, between families in the Ballyspillane area of Killarney. Two women including one who allegedly brandished a crutch in the course of a fight during an alleged incident of violent disorder at a retail store, the previous day, also in the eastern end of Killarney, were also before the District Court in Killarney on Tuesday.

Off The Ball to broadcast live from Dr Crokes

Raymond McDonagh (31) of Coolageela East, Kanturk, Co. Cork , is charged that he had a golf club on July 9 at Hazelwood Drive, Ballyspillane, Killarney, in the early hours, and this was intended to intimidate another person ‘in the course of a feud between two families’. The offence is contrary to Section 9 (5) of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act. Mr McDonagh is also charged with threatening and abusive behaviour such as to create a breach of the peace on the occasion. His solicitor Padraig O’Connell said jurisdiction would have to be decided on both matters. Two women remanded on bail last Friday in relation to an incident hours earlier were further remanded on bail on Tuesday under strict conditions including a night-time curfew and that they do not comment on social media in relation to issues between families in the feud. Kathleen Harty (39), of 61 Pinewood Estate, Killarney, is charged with a total of four offences, at 2.30pm on Monday July 8, at Mr Price, Ballycasheen, Killarney. She is accused of assault causing harm to two women, Lisa Long and Bridget O’Brien. Both alleged assault offences are contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997. Co-accused Vera Dooley (35), of 149 Ballyspillane, Killarney, is charged with assault causing harm to Lisa Long on the date. Both Ms Harty and Ms Dooley are also charged with committing violent disorder at Mr Price with three others. Ms Harty, who is on crutches, is further charged with an offence under the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, namely that ‘while committing Violent Disorder and

Assault Causing Harm in the course of a fight produced, in a manner likely unlawfully to intimidate another person, an article capable of inflicting serious injury, to wit, a crutch’. The women made no reply when the formal charges were put to them, the arresting gardai told the court in Listowel. Sergeant Leo Randles said his application was to remand the women on bail on nine agreed written conditions handed into court, which include that the women must sign on daily at Killarney Garda Station, surrender their passports, be contactable on mobile phone at all times, and obey curfew between 8pm and 8am. They are not to interact with the alleged injured parties and must ‘stay off social media in relation to ongoing issues between families’. Judge David Waters stressed there was to be ‘no discussion’ on social media in relation to the incident. He said any breach must lead to an application for an arrest warrant ‘without delay’. Killarney District Court on Tuesday heard how Ms Harty is also charged with assault causing harm to a female on February 13 last at Ballyspillane.

The court also heard reference to an alleged assault, this time a common assault in a bar in Killarney a year ago, in the case of Ms Dooley. Vera Dooley is charged with assaulting Michelle O’Brien, contrary to Section 2 of the non-fatal offences against the person act at Scruffy’s Bar, Killarney on July 7, 2018; Michelle O’Brien (33) of Hazelwood Drive, Killarney, is accused of assaulting Vera Dooley on the same date, also at Scruffy’s Bar Killarney. Judge Waters told Padraig O’Connell solicitor he would fix a date in early September, probably for October, to hear the allegation against Ms O’Brien. Judge Waters told Brendan Ahern solicitor for Ms Dooley, and Padraig O’Connell solicitor for Ms Harty and Mr McDonagh, if the matters were serious enough, he would send them forward from the District Court. Judge Waters said he will decide this in September even if the directions from the DPP were not available on the date. Prosecuting Sergeant Kieran O’Connell is to outline all the facts of the allegations concerning Ms Dooley, Ms Harty and Mr McDonagh in September, the judge directed.

Popular internet-based sports website Off The Ball, will bring their award-winning live show on the road this summer with Dr Crokes GAA Club selected as the first live broadcast venue. On Wednesday next (July 31), they will broadcast from the famous clubhouse off Lewis Road, where a host of special guests – including Kerry legends Pat O’Shea, Darragh O’Se, Darran O’Sullivan and Kieran Donaghy – will join Off The Ball presenter Nathan Murphy, to provide in-depth analysis of the 2019 GAA Football Championship, chat about their own personal GAA careers. “This gives the club and the town a national profile,” Club Chairman Pat O’Sullivan said. “When we have high profile players like Colm [Cooper] and Gavin White [current county captain] our profile is there and helps get these things over the line. It is great it is on in the club and I hope everyone who comes enjoys it.” The roadshow celebrates SuperValu’s 10th year as sponsor of the GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship.

SKY'S THE LIMIT: A competitor soars through the mountain air of Shronaboy overlooking the picturesque backdrop of Lough Guitane, Muckross and Killarney.

Mountain bike track has potential to be best in Europe | By Sean Moriarty

A new downhill mountain bike track in Glenflesk has the potential to be the best in Europe - and could attract some of the biggest competitions in the world. Shronaboy Farm hosted the Munster Downhill Championships last Sunday. And although it has hosted several nontimed events in the past it was the first

time that the venue hosted an event sanctioned by Cycling Ireland. The track, which needs additional funding to bring it in to line with similar championship

INEC rebrand costs

€500,000 | By Michelle Crean One of Ireland’s hottest and most popular music acts is set to be the first band to play the newly rebranded INEC – which has had a significant investment to increase capacity. Costing over half a million euro, the rebrand in The Gleneagle INEC Arena includes better production and technology across lighting, sound and audio-visual systems, and an increased patron capacity of 4142 - meaning they now have the infrastructure to cater for a wider variety

of acts and artists. Mark Egan, Director of Entertainment Gleneagle INEC Arena, said that it was a very important project for them to accurately reflect the product on offer. “Our new arena capacity coupled with our technological infrastructure enables us to cater for bigger and better touring productions which in turn provides a better customer and artist experience,” he said. “The feedback from the artists that play here is always really positive. There is a certain kind of energy here, not repli-

Sunday’s event attracted just over 80 entries, but site operators believe that this could double if they could complete the track works and add in shower facilities and car parking. “Our plan would be to attract the big European competitions,” site owner Con O’Donoghue said. “But it is all down to funding. Sunday’s event was our big advert and judging by the comments I heard after, we have a good thing. Last Sunday was fierce successful and we have another major event in September.” The current track was developed with the help of local downhill mountain biking enthusiasts but O’Donoghue says he needs to double the amount of development at the venue to bring it up to Cycling

Picture This released their self-titled full-length debut album in 2017 going triple-platinum in Ireland, holding the number one spot in the Irish Album Chart for four weeks, and also topping the Streaming Chart for seven weeks. He says the local track has huge potential but it will take an incredible amount of work to bring it up to Les Gets’ standards. “In time to come it will be very good,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It could progress to be something huge. Les Gets is a ski resort in the winter and they use it for the bikes in the summer, so they have proper lifts to get the bikes to the top.” Shronaboy currently uses jeeps and trailers to bring competitors to start line at the top.

An accident waiting to happen - has happened! EXCLUSIVE

Council say they’ve no plans to change the layout of the Rock Road entrance

DIZZY HEIGHTS: Ultra Runner, Sean Clifford, from Killarney, set an Irish record reaching the dizzy heights of 10,000m of positive ascent in 23 hours and 53 minutes. Joe O’Leary is pictured behind him. Photo:Valerie O’Sullivan

Sean scales Carrauntoohil 10 times in a day! An exhausted Killarney man is resting this week following his impressive Irish record – for running up and down Carrauntoohil 10 times in less than 24 hours. Killarney adventure racer Sean Clifford successfully climbed the equivalent height of Mount Everest - reaching heights of 10,000 metres of positive ascent in 23 hours and 53 minutes. Clifford was joined throughout his record breaking quest by fellow Killarney Ultra Runners, Joe O’Leary, Damien Courtney, Neil Kelders and Harold Clifford, between Friday night and Saturday night last. Sean set about his challenge, on Caher Mountain, on Friday night, running through the night, ascending, Carrauntoohil, Cnoc an Toinne, using the Devil’s Ladder for ascents, and Bothar na Gige (The ’Zig Zags’) for descents. “I knew half way through, at around 6am, that I was not happy with the time,” the Woodlawn native told the Killarney Advertiser. “I knew I would need a big push through the day to make the

time and height gain.” “It was a huge team effort,” Sean, who bases himself in Nancy, France on the foothills of the Vosges Mountains, said. “Joe deserves a lot of accolades. He joined me with 12 hours to go, and pushed me every step of the way. We knew we were under pressure to make the time and Joe was working out the mathematics on what route up and down we should take to keep on target.” Sean returned to a hero’s welcome at Cronin’s Yard late on Saturday night. Sean has competed in races across the globe, the UTMB in France, Diagonal des Fous on Reunion Island, El Cruce in Chile and Ankor Ultra in Cambodia. More recently he has placed second in Ireland’s longest and toughest ultra-marathon, the Kerry Way Ultra last September. The team are also preparing a documentary on their achievement and, subject to editing, should air later this year or earlier next year. His record breaking run raised funds for Dementia and Alzheimer awareness.

A pillar at a brand new bus park was accidently knocked to the ground at the weekend – weeks after concerned coach operators told the Killarney Advertiser that the entrance is too narrow. The pillar, at the coach park on Rock Road, was knocked by a bus on Sunday evening at a time when traffic was very busy due fans leaving Killarney following the Kerry and Mayo match. In June concerned bus drivers expressed their fears that the entrance is too narrow, saying it takes at least two or three manoeuvres in traffic to get in and out. They also called on Kerry County Council to widen it. It is not clear what kind of bus was involved on Sunday - but it is very likely that a left-hand drive coach was the culprit. Drivers of such coaches would have a very restricted view of the exit and would also have to contend with on-coming traffic and pedestrians.

“I am very disappointed to hear it happened,” Coach Operator Ken O’Day told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “Vehicles are expensive and damage to any property is not good to hear. I suggested in the past that the entrance is an accident waiting to happen and it looks like it happened. I hope the Council would take a wider view and see what can be done to make the entrance more suitable for coaches.” A spokesperson for Kerry County Council said they would talk to bus operators but at present there are no plans to change the layout of the entrance. “The pillar at Rock Road was damaged last Sunday by a bus. Traffic was extremely busy on that day due to the football match,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “There are no plans to amend this bus entrance. However, the Council will again liaise with the bus operators regarding any issue they have and will continue to monitor this bus and car park over the summer months.”

“No more wind farms” Locals commit to fund legal challenge | By Sean Moriarty Over 150 households in the Sliabh Luachra area have committed to pay €5 a week standing-order to fund legal costs against plans for a battery storage compound.

LAUNCH RUN KILLARNEY: Launching Run Killarney at Ladies View were: Sean McDermott (Gleneagle Group), Mike Riordan (Sanctuary Runners), Oliver Kirwan (Run Killarney), Graham Clifford (Sanctuary Runners), Catherine Casey (Gleneagle Group) and Busie Mhlophe (Sanctuary Runners).

Killarney set for running bonanza this weekend!

Killarney will play host to one of Ireland’s premier running events tomorrow (Saturday) when more than 3000 competitors from all over the world take part in the Gleneagle Hotel Run Killarney half-marathon and 10K road race. This sold out event will welcome all types of runners, walkers, newcomers and people who just want a challenge and a great day out. Participants will represent 15 countries from around the world including China, Brazil, Republic of Congo, Australia and UAE. Road closures take place on the N71 Molls Gap to Muckross House Killarney from 6.30am to 11.30am. For the first time ever Run Killarney will be plastic bottle free, replacing cups and bottles with compostable cups for water at the various water stations and the finish line. As part of this year’s event, organisers have teamed up again with The Sanctuary Runners to help raise awareness of their mission and to collect donations of running gear from the public and those taking part in the race. The Sanctuary Runners was set up by Graham Clifford in 2018. Their aim is to enable local runners to run alongside, and in solidarity with, those in Direct Provision thereby fostering friendship, positivity and respect while bringing greater awareness to the system in which asylum seekers live. “We are really excited that Run Killarney

returns, is still going strong and continues to be a significant date in the running calendar in Ireland,” Event Organiser Oliver Kirwan said. “We are delighted to welcome The Sanctuary Runners to the event for their second year. Running is all about mental and physical health and achieving a balance in your life. It’s a great way to connect and interact with other people no matter what your or their situation is. I’d like to welcome everyone to the event and wish them the very best of luck, see you on the beautiful course!” The race routes give competitors the chance to run one of the world's most breath-taking and scenic road races through Muckross House and the Killarney National Park. Both routes are fast downhill courses with amazing scenery. The half-marathon starts at Molls Gap and continues through the National Park to the finish line and party atmosphere at the Gleneagle Hotel. All competitors will receive a customised t-shirt and finisher’s medal and can embrace the great atmosphere at the Gleneagle Hotel once they cross the finish line. For more information please contact Annette Grealish on annette@eliteevents. ie or 087 6024621 or visit www.runkillarney.com.

In June this year, the Ballinahulla Battery Awareness Group (BBAG) applied for a judicial review after An Bord Pleanala upheld planning permission granted by Kerry County Council to build a battery storage site in their area. Locals are concerned about fire risks at the compound and are also fighting a plan to build more wind turbines in the region. On Monday, BBAG joined forces with other communities in Kerry, including Ballybunion and Ballylongford to protest outside Kerry County Council in Tralee. Their combined mantra is “No more wind farms”. The Ballinahulla group have also launched phase-two of their fundraising drive to challenge Kerry County Council in the High Court regarding the battery storage complex and to fight An Bord Pleanála in relation to additional wind turbines in the area. “Monday’s protest in Tralee was louder and carried more energy than our previous protests as we were joined by other communities in Kerry who face similar issues,” group chair Anita O’Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser.

“We re-grouped after that and had a local meeting on Wednesday night. We have a commitment from over 150 households to lodge €5 a week into our Credit Union account to pay for legal proceedings – the momentum is phenomenal.” Meanwhile at the first meeting of the new Castleisland-Chorca Dhuibne Muncipal District the members put forward a joint motion calling on Minister Eoghan Murphy to put a halt on all future planning applications in relation to renewable energy projects such as wind turbines, battery stations until new guidelines are published. “The current guidelines which date back to 2006 for wind turbines are no longer fit for purpose but our local authorities are being asked to continue considering planning applications under guidelines of which could be obsolete in a number of months,” said Cllr. Jackie Healy-Rae. “At a time when Government are pushing new climate strategy and trying to be green, they are yet again putting the cart before the horse as it is grossly irresponsible and neglectful to be considering planning applications on guidelines that are 13-years-old. Communities have been torn apart and destroyed by some of these applications and it is extremely unfair to allow this continue.”

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

The EU elite is using the border to get at the Brits So we’re to be kept in eternal winter, and short evenings, because the North is once more wagging the South. The proposal to stop switching the clocks by the EU won’t be backed by us because we would be out of sync with the North! Boris Johnson is utterly correct of course in talking about the tail wagging the dog when it came to the outsized significance of the North in the Brexit disagreement with the EU. But he could talk about the outsized significance the North carries here too! We are caught, perennially it seems, between the hard rocks of the UK and the EU because of the North! I am tempted to say a plague on all their houses. The European Union is not necessarily Europe we need to remember, and watching a fly on the wall documentary on the Brexit negotiations from the perspective of Belgian politician Guy Verhofstadt, I was struck by how school boyish all of them are. And how completely removed from ordinary citizens of Italy or England. Johnson comes in for much stick for being a public school boy (in the curious parlance of England, “public” means very expensively and privately educated) here and the EU. Someone should watch that Verhofstadt documentary ‘Brexit: Behind Closed Doors’. This fellow is the European parliament’s Brexit coordinator, and he is the leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats, the party Fianna Fail line up with. To be frank, he came across as naive, childish and spoilt, and as downright silly. The whole Brexit thing is a game for them. I think I have said already, this country under Leo, Donohoe and co., is too much on the side of the EU elite.

We need to back off on the border, give a bit of ground literally and soften our stance. The EU elite is using the border to get at the Brits, it is quite clear. The overgrown school boys on all sides couldn’t care less about the little southern Irelanders -their noses are out of joint and their egos bruised. The tragedy for all of us is Leo and co., are fetching the ball for them with their adamantine stance to cosy up in Brussels. The German, French and Belgian elite didn’t cut us or the Greeks much slack when their banks came knocking on our front doors. What Donohoe, Coveney and the others should be doing is going out the back door and negotiating quietly with the Brits. But from what I hear, the channels between England and Ireland, not to mind the North, have been all but shut down under Fine Gael. All that, should l be involved in this Brexit thing, is a customs post like Switzerland has with surrounding countries. And surely if a small country like Liechtenstein can manage border posts - we can too. The central problem with the EU and this leading to the growth of fascism all over Europe - is the fact no weight is given to indigenous people or to nationhood. Common sense was defied in not giving just a little extra weighting to the natives who were born and bred and endured for generations whether it was England or Ireland, or Germany, in housing, social welfare and other entitlements.

Returning Irish emigrants who have worked abroad, they should not have to queue up with others coming to this country for the first time. They should get some bit of extra slack, simply to respect the fact they are Irish, they went to school here and they are back. The theory behind ignoring nationality and undermining it is fine - everyone is equal - but the practice is different. The Rose of Tralee exists on Irishness. Our citizenship is conferred on second and third generation Irish because they are from Irish blood lines. The Presidential election is likely to include people of Irish descent abroad. How is all that squaring with the liberal juggernaut driven by the English in Europe as much as anyone else that there is to be no nationality? If the EU had applied common sense and their leaders had been in touch with their own countries instead of being blinded by the wine fuelled talk in Brussels - which they don’t pay for - they would have realised they were not a bunch of 1950s existentialists shooting the breeze in the cafes of Paris, but lawmakers and policy makers. And laws and policy must be grounded on common sense. Irony, I have come to learn, is the great rule in life: the EU was set up to avoid another war between its nationalities, and its solution was to stamp out nationality and make one huge territory of consumers. The idea being if we had enough to eat and money in our pockets, we’d care nothing for nationhood. The tragedy is stamping out the idea of nationhood given birth to a form of narrow nationalism as poisonous as any we have experienced this far in Europe.

I applaud Minister Madigan’s hedge cutting decision Why should huge buses have a right to go on narrow roads? The world and his wife now attacks Josepha Madigan for not changing the law to cut hedges in August. Mirrors are being broken, buses are not able to see around the corners with the meadow sweet and mont-

bretia, and the birds don’t nest - is the argument against Josepha. But, for once, I applaud the minister in her decision. In August, councils are perfectly entitled to cut overgrown hedges at dangerous bends, if they want. My question about these big buses and coaches on narrow roads is - why do

we allow them down the narrow roads in the first place? One of the best suggestions of this new Council has come from the old councillor Michael Cahill, who has put forward the idea of a hop on, hop off shuttle bus for the Ring of Kerry. It could be extended - small shuttle buses on non-national roads is one way to avoid the branches!

Anyone for cricket?

Hurling may be the fastest game in the world, but there is something about the slowness of cricket on a sunny afternoon. And now that Irish man Eoin Morgan has captained the winning England team, memories are coming back. Generations past would point to the tradition of cricket in Killarney and the old cricket field which flooded in early summer alongside the Flesk River. It must have been magical. Cricket preceded football in the annals of St Brendan’s College, and the first mention of a St Brendan’s team was a newspaper report of the college cricket team victory over a Killarney X1 in 1874. A lot of people would love to see a return of cricket to Killarney and there was some move a few years back for a cricket field. The idea was fielded and pursued by Cllr Michael Gleeson after being approached by cricket loving people from other countries who are now part of our town. A site in the Demesne was examined and the NPWS were not averse to the idea, Cllr Michael Gleeson, Mayor of Killarney, tells me. But it was too near the main road and a long six might end up on a windscreen is how Michael explained it. It is something he will look at again though which is good news for integration in Killarney. It would be a splendid sight to watch the cricketers in action. And we could all join in.

No more Puckin’ around! Puck Fair committee calling for public support Puck Fair organisers are appealing to members of the public to support a €10,000 GoFundMe drive to ensure the continuation of Ireland’s most legendary festival. The move was made in a bid to tackle soaring insurance prices and the overall running costs of three-day event which begins on Monday, August 12. However, a month since the page went live just under €900 has been raised by 21 people to date. The festival was launched on Saturday in Kingston’s Bar with the newly crowned Queen of Puck Fair, Maeve McCarthy from Cromane Lower in Killorglin, who was joined by her Lady in Waiting, Sian Corkery. A 22-strong committee of volunteers will ensure that Puck Fair is the pride of Killorglin - but for the first time since its inception - organisers have felt the need to reach out to the general public for their assistance in making sure the yearly festival takes place as planned. The GoFundMe campaign officially kicked off at Saturday’s launch event, with organisers hopeful that funds raised over the coming month will cover this year’s mounting expenses. “It got to a point this year where we had to reevaluate our plan of action in terms of funding such a large-scale event with a very modest budget,” Declan Falvey, Chairman of the Puck Fair committee, said. “We pride ourselves on providing the public with an event that is free of charge; free entry, free entertainment – you name it. But with running costs

rising across the board, we had to come up with a plan B. When the idea of a GoFundMe campaign was suggested it seemed like a no brainer. Puck is an event that is 100 percent for the people, so we’re giving those that enjoy it most the opportunity to invest in its legacy. If everyone who has enjoyed the festival over the years gave just a few euros towards keeping this cherished tradition going, you can be sure Puck Fair’s story will continue for years to come.” In another break from convention this year, the Cattle Fair – typically held on day two of Puck Fair – will now take place on Monday, August 12. This change in schedule is to facilitate an old Charter, which outlines that when August 11 falls on a Sunday, the Cattle Fair will instead be held on the following day. Aside from this, festival goers can expect the usual excitement and eccentricity that only Puck Fair can offer! The three-day schedule includes dance workshops, fancy dress competitions, a fun fair, food stalls, street markets and live music throughout the town – not to mention the famous Horse Fair, which takes place on ‘Gathering Day’ and kicks off the popular festival each year. The Coronation Parade and Ceremony on day one will bring people to the town’s centre in their droves, while the stage in Killorglin’s main square will play host each night to well-known national acts, such as Celtic Knights (August 10), Johnny Brady (August 11) and The Papa Zitas (August 12), who will entertain the crowds well into the night.

Council launch annual report Kerry County Council published its annual report for 2018, which was launched at County Buildings on Monday, by Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Niall Kelleher. The report is a comprehensive record of the work and achievements of the local authority during last year and sets out the infrastructural improvements, service delivery and investment in projects and initiatives achieved in the year against the backdrop of a €225m spend in capital and revenue expenditure. During 2018, there was significant investment in essential infrastructure including, for example, an increased investment of €53m in the county’s roads network, the continuing rollout of a €62m housing programme, and the opening of a new €30m water treatment plant at Lough Guitane which provides clean drinking water to approximately half of the population of the county, as well as the many visitors to Kerry. For the Killarney area, capital projects during this time included the opening of a new burial ground in Knockeendubh, providing approximately 2,300 burial spaces for the next 30 years approximately. The Flesk Cycle/Walkway received Part 8 Planning approval in 2018, and the recently opened Rock Road car park is providing an additional 190 parking spaces in the town. The Municipal District was also successful in obtaining funding under the Urban Regeneration Development Fund towards the development of a masterplan for the Áras Phádraig site. A project team was put in place to proceed with the development of a masterplan for this site on Lewis Road. Work also continued on proposals to further develop the walking route from the Gap Cross to the Gap of Dunloe and around Lough Leane. Part 8 approval for the redevelopment of the Cultural Centre

on East Avenue Road which involves significant refurbishment and accessibility works inside the building along with development of an outdoor area for events, was progressed in 2018. Infrastructural developments include the N71 Port Road was strengthened and overlaid in 2018. The scheme also involved safety improvement works at the junction of the Port Road and New Road, as well as the upgrading and relocating the existing pedestrian crossing on the Port Road. This allows improved access to the Knockeer Children’s Playground and Killarney National Park. Resurfacing of Kenmare Place and the ‘HaHah’ took place as well as sections of Main Street and Mission Road. The upgrade of the Fair Hill pedestrian crossing received Section 38 approval in November. Kerry County Council also invested in over €200,000 for street cleaning equipment including the purchase of a new road sweeper. Also, Killarney Municipal District staff in conjunction with volunteers from Killarney Looking Good planted 26,000 spring bulbs at locations along the Mission Road, Dr Hans Liebherr Road and the Killarney Bypass. Several areas within the Municipal District received CLÁR funding for local and community projects including Firies, Rathmore and Barraduff. 75 projects were approved for funding under the Community Support Fund with a monetary value of €175,000. “As Chief Excutive of the Council, I wish to sincerely thank the staff of the organisation – those based in Áras An Chontae, our Municipal District offices, our local Area Offices and our outdoor staff in every part of the county,” Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell said. “Their dedication and professionalism exemplify the important public service provided by the local authority.”

Go nuts for a brand-new science camp!

For 20 years Nutty Scientists has been bringing science to life for kids worldwide – and now it’s coming to Killarney for the very first time. This summer, one and two-day camps will be held in Knockanes National School, Headford and St Oliver’s National School in Killarney during the weeks of August 12 and 19, respectively. To celebrate launching in Kerry, a free fun family science show will take place upstairs in the Killarney Outlet Centre on Saturday July 27, from 12pm to 2pm. Join them for lots of fun, science, education and entertainment for all the family. There will be an interactive show as well as a number of hands on demonstrations where everyone can learn first-hand more about who the Nutty Scientists are. The idea behind the Nutty Scientists programme is to get kids engaged and excited about science. Not only do the camps combine fun with learning, it also brings an innovative form of “edutainment” i.e. entertainment and education, which gets kids excited about all areas of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM). Over the years, Nutty Scientists has grown to become a world leader in interactive chil-

dren’s programs developing appropriate activities for children promoting science and its impact on the world today. Programs include camps during school holidays, in-school programs, after-school programs, science shows, science fairs, science workshops, corporate events and science themed parties. To date, over nine million children have already participated in Nutty Scientists programs all over the world. Nutty Scientists first launched in Ireland in February this year in Wexford, and since its launch their programs have spread throughout a number of counties in the south east, and is now expanding to Kerry, Cork and Limerick from this summer. Camps are filling up fast, but places are still available so check out their website for full details of all upcoming camps www. nuttyscientists.com and stay up-to-date on Facebook and Instagram to see what they are doing. Jack and Betty voted best volunteers | By Sean Moriarty Out of 1,400 volunteers, it was a very difficult task – but Jack and Betty Breen, of Kelly’s Cross, Sneem, won the volunteers’ prize at the recent Ring of Kerry Cycle. The couple have become synonymous with annual cycle. Each year they open their house and welcome cyclists, feeding them and providing respite in the latter third of the route. Organisers asked the 6,000 cyclists to pick their favourite volunteer. Every volunteer was entered in to a draw for free bed and breakfast in the Gleneagle on October 11, the night of the annual cycle’s presentation night at the hotel.

It was a very difficult task for all. Finally the decision was made to place the nominees names into PRO’s Cathal Walsh’s helmet, engage Brendan Coffey (organising committee) at his dental surgery, where the winners name was extracted and overseen by Sergeant Dermot O’Connell. “Their house has been become an institution and is so important to the Breen's to have this wonderful link with the biggest charity event in Ireland,” Cathal said. “The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is the biggest one day charity fundraising event in Ireland, attracting thousands of leisure cyclists to complete the 180km challenge the spectacular Ring of Kerry. Jack and Betty have opened their house every year and welcomed cyclists, with food, drink, cups of tea and brack.”

COURTS

Rathmore man jailed for four years Son took over cannabis operation to pay off family debts A son had taken over the cannabis operation set up by his late father to pay the mortgage, - in what the Circuit Criminal Court this week heard was “a bizarre case”. The “highly sophisticated cannabis operation” in Rathmore, was one of the main suppliers of cannabis in Killarney, and was funding the family mortgage as well as debts from a failed business, the Circuit Criminal Court in Tralee was told. The operation, in the home of Owen O’Rourke at Gortavehy West, Rathmore, had spilled over several rooms, according to gardai who carried out a search of the house on April 18, 2013. The plants at various stages of cultivation had a potential street value of €160,000 and gardai said the Rathmore home was “one of the main suppliers of cannabis to the town of Killarney,” Judge Thomas E O’Donnell recalled at the sentencing hearing on Wednesday. Owen O’Rourke pleaded guilty to two counts under the Misuse of Drugs Acts Sections 15 (a) and Section 17, of having cannabis with a street value of more than €13,000 and of cultivation. He took full responsibility for the operation, the court was told by prosecutor John O’Sullivan. “It was a commercial operation,” Judge O’Donnell said. “This is a bizarre case and might be

described as the sins of the father”. The entire operation had been set up by the accused’s father who had died in 2013, the judge recalled. On his death, the accused who was then aged 19, came home from the UK to take over the operation. “The income was being used to repay the family mortgage and other debts arising out of the failed plumbing business which had collapsed during the recession,” the judge said. A previous court has been told his mother helped him with growing of the plants. In 2015, she was prosecuted and received a suspended sentence in Cork for the cultivation part of the operation. But “despite the sins of the father”, the son, Owen O’Rourke, had taken over the operation quite willingly and had a high level of culpability. In mitigation, the judge noted he had cooperated fully and had a deep sense of misguided family loyalty. A father of one, he has no previous convictions. Judge O’Donnell jailed O’Rourke for a total of four years - four years for the supply charge and three years for the cultivation, with the sentences to run concurrently. The prison term has been backdated to November 2018, when he went into custody.

SHOW: Annual classic car show set to take over the racecourse on Sunday

Horsepower of a different kind this Sunday | By Sean Moriarty

Horsepower of a different kind is set to take over Killarney Racecourse on Sunday as the town’s annual classic car show rolls into the venue two days after the summer horse racing festival. Organisers, Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club (KVCVC), have promised a host of new activities for this year’s fifth annual event. While the gates open at 11am, the highlight of the day will be a parade of all the participating cars, tractors and motorbikes along the ambulance track on the course, at 3pm. Kilgarvan Motor Museum will bring several of its display cars for the first time and local motorcycle racer Kevin Doherty and his colleagues will have their road-racing bikes on static display. Killarney and District Motor Club (KDMC) will use the event to launch their annual Autocross at Tralee Racecourse over the August Bank Holiday weekend. KDMC members will also display some of their rally cars at the show.

There will be a special display dedicated to the late Maurice Nagle, a long-time member of both KVCVC and KDMC. Some of his historic rally cars, including his famous Ford Cortina, so often used as a road closed car on local rallies, will be on display. One of the oldest cars on show will be a Ford Model T from the 1930s. Also new for 2019 is an autojumble section where spare part dealers will be selling unusual bits. “It is a great family day out,” said event PRO Tom Leslie. Tickets for the club’s annual raffle – first prize a 40 year old Ford 2600 tractor – in aid of local charities like ACT for Meningitis and Killarney Micro Track will be on sale at the show too. The Killarney Advertiser’s Sean Moriarty will act as MC for the parade.

Outdoor dining specials at Malarkey

In addition to their usual evening menu, Malarkey will now offer an outdoor dining experience between 1pm and 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays in the newly refurbished garden to the rear of the premises.

CLEANING UP: A group from the Countess Grove Residents Association doing their bit for Killarney in the Tidy Towns competition by participating in a general clean-up of their estate on Monday night. Picture: Eamonn Keogh

Residents give Countess Grove a facelift

It was all hands on the cleaning equipment for local residents who came together to give their estate a facelift on Monday evening. Eager residents in Countess Grove, who won the Best Estate award in the annual Killarney Looking Good Competition last year, rolled up their sleeves and gave their area a general clean-up as part of their Tidy Towns commitment. “Each year the Countess Grove Residents’ Association sends out a flyer suggesting that it’s time for the yearly tidy-up, and the call is always well answered,” Philip Brady, Chair of the group, told the Killarney Advertiser. “People young and old come out with their shovels, hoes and brushes. Barrows appear magically. And in a couple of hours bulging refuse sacks supplied

by the Council are ready for collection. In the meantime people chat, admire small children brought along to “help” and comment on how well the place is looking now.” The residents are also looking forward to the construction of a zebra crossing at the entrance to their estate. “This will be of the same standard as the one at the top of Countess Road, and most of the funding necessary has been vouched for through the good offices of several county councillors of the Killarney area. It will serve about 180 houses from the various estates and should make the crossing point much safer.”

Frankie fever to benefit Killarney for weeks to come When Killarney Races announced that legendary Italian jockey Frankie Dettori was coming to town the event organisers could never quantify the effect he would have on the local economy. Killarney Racing Manager Philip O’Brien deserves huge credit for enticing the world-famous jockey to town – a project that was six weeks in the making. In the days leading up to Dettori’s four races on Wednesday evening, O’Brien went on the record as saying: “This is a tremendous feather in our cap because

Frankie Dettori is box office. We are overjoyed that he will include Killarney in his schedule for the first time and his personality has never been greater, so we expect a bumper crowd on the day.” O’Brien got what he wished for the fans came out in their 1000s to welcome the legend to the Ross Road venue. Dettori’s appearance on Wednesday night will have the same effect and will put Killarney on the radar of horse racing fans who may never have considered the town as a holiday venue in the past.

WEDDING

Wedding dream come true for Laura and Barry

19.07.2019

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

28

The sun came out and shone brightly as couple Laura Tangney and Barry Tyndall enjoyed their dream wedding in Killarney.

Laura from Beaufort and her new husband from Dublin feel like their special day was all a dream as everything went off perfectly on the day – including plenty of Kerry/Dublin banter to keep them all laughing. The couple said ‘I Do’ in the Prince of Peace Church in Fossa on Friday, June 28 with celebrant Fr Padraig Walsh from Tralee, followed by reception in The Brehon Hotel. Best Man was Neil Gentles, Maid of Honour was Deirdre Tangney, Groomsmen Dave Tyndall and Liam Tyndall, Bridesmaids Lisa Landers and Catriona Delahunty, Flowergirl Maryanne O'Shea and Pageboy Noah Tyndall. Laura’s parents Mary and Pat Tangney and the Barry’s parents Marie and Liam Tyndall had a wonderful day as they celebrated alongside the couple, and many family and friends. The couple, who both work and reside in Dublin, first met seven years ago in Flannery's Pub in Dublin. It was pretty much history after that as they were smitten with each other from the start. Six years later, last May, they got engaged on the island of Kos in Greece – a complete surprise to Laura as Barry took her for a romantic stroll after din-

ner and got down on bended knee on the beach. “The gentleman that he is he called my dad first. Just after he popped the question we could hear the song ‘Stand By Me’ being played in the distance. That was our first dance song at our reception.” Bellacanto from Castleisland provided the beautiful singing accompanied by the cello and violin. Flowers were provided by Sheila from 'All about Flowers' in Killorglin. Photographer Míchéal O’Sullivan took the couple to the viewing point across from the Aghadoe Heights Hotel and afterwards the happy couple joined the rest of the bridal party in Ross Castle. “We were driven in a vintage Bentley car provided by Tom Horan in Tralee,” she said. “The band and DJ was provided by Deuces Wild and the dancefloor was full from start to finish. We went on honeymoon a few days after the wedding on a Mediterranean cruise around Italy, France and Spain. “It all feels like a dream now that it's over but we had the most magical day, everything went above and beyond our dreams and the sun was shining all afternoon in beautiful Killarney.”

Their day began with a special Mass in Rathmore, celebrated by Fr Dan Herlihy, who went to primary school with Michael. They were joined by 40 family members for a celebratory dinner at the Dromhall Hotel, where the happy couple were treated to a surprise slideshow that captured their life from a time before they met, through to the wedding and the arrival of their children and grandchildren. “It was a special day for them as most of the wedding party was there again,” their daughter Mairead Fleming O’Leary said.

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Ways to keep your garden vibrant With glorious weather people are enjoying a few days away and everyone is busy and it’s at this point that pots are often neglected. They can look fabulous one day, then the next they’re wilted, brown, shrivelled, or worse - totally overgrown! At the height of the summer you will also notice petunias losing their vigour and verbenas suffering from mildew. Now is a good time to revamp the whole thing, but the question is what to put in now that the main flush of bedding plants have sold out. There are plenty of options. Dahlias are available in every colour and colour combination imaginable. They might cost around €10, but they will fill a pot and guarantee colour for the remainder of the summer and well into autumn. Dahlias are an easy plant to keep, just feed well with an all-purpose fertiliser and dead-head regularly. Earwigs can be a problem as they nibble at the flowers, but there is an easy solution to this. Fill a small terracotta pot with straw, then place a bamboo cane beside the dahlia. Place the terracotta pot upside down on the cane. During the heat of the day, the earwigs will go into the pot to find shade, so you can lift the pot off in the afternoon and deposit the earwigs far away from the dahlias. This works very well for dahlias in the garden also. Another plant which is available now is the Garvinea. This is a hardy, garden variety of the Gerbera, and its happy daisy shaped flowers are sure to put a smile on your face. They come in a great choice of colours, zesty orange, warm yellow,

fizzy pink bright white, good strong colours which will attract attention, not just of humans, but also that of the bees. Garvineas will come back next year provided they are kept quite sheltered and dry over the winter. During their growing season they like a little water but often their buds will not recover from a complete drying out. Persica roses would be another excellent option, with masses of single flowers in yellows, peach, pinks and red. They have a very long flowering season from May right up to the first frosts. They are very disease resistant - not suffering too badly from mildew or blackspot. Feed them regularly to keep the foliage glossy and strong. I recommend Uncle Tom’s rose tonic, a fertiliser used by professionals but now also available to the public. It may seem pricey, but you dilute it 1:100, and it really gives all roses a boost, both in their performance and their immune system. All pots, whatever state they are in, benefit from feeding and I always recommend using a complete fertiliser - that is one which feeds roots, shoots and blooms. Often tomato feed is recommended, but I steer away from this unless I am feeding cropping plants such as tomatoes and strawberries. In order for your plants to remain strong, have a good immune system and an ability to cope with drought, it is best to ensure strong growth in every part of the plant. Phostrogen, Miracle-Gro and any number of seaweed fertilisers are excellent.

€500,000 Fossa Lotto winnings claimed

There are some happy people in Fossa this week – as they collected their €500,000 winnings at Lotto HQ on Wednesday. The EuroMillions winners, who wish to remain anonymous, bought their lucky Quick Pick ticket in the Spar store in Fossa, on the day of the draw two weeks ago. After waiting to finally claim their prize, the Kerry native admitted that their life-changing’ prize has yet to sink in. “To be honest, there’s still a lot of disbelief that I’ve actually won a half million euro – it really is life changing

for me. When you buy a ticket in the shop, you always hope it’s going to be your lucky day but you’re never really prepared for that moment when you are told that you’ve won a huge lump of money like this,” they said. “Taking some time out was very important to get my head around it, so I’m going to be sensible and make a proper plan to ensure that I enjoy it for many years to come.”

Celebrating You Kerry company launches children’s book on diversity The HR Suite has launched a new book to promote diversity and inclusivity in order to mark its 10th anniversary in business. The workbook, entitled ‘Celebrating You’, will be available to download for free and it is hoped it will be used to motivate discussions around diversity and inclusivity – both at home and at work. Each page has a short story and illustrations which deal with various topics – from the variety of family makeups and coping with grief to being excluded or being different. The book is aimed at teachers, parents and guardians who can read it as a storybook to children to spark conversations around various topics. It is also hoped that other companies will use it as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes. While the book is free, the HR Suite would encourage those who download it to donate to Enable Ireland, which works to enable and empower children and adults with disabilities to

achieve independence, choice and inclusion. “We believe that CSR goes beyond compliance; that it is a voluntary concept, led by a business, to positively impact society,” HR Suite founder Caroline McEnery said. “This interactive workbook for children can stimulate and work in conjunction with companies’ CSR movements. It could be rolled out to all employees – not just those who are parents, but coaches, uncles, aunts etc.”

The Light Between Oceans

Mick Flannery’s new self-titled album, which reached number one in the album charts this week, is being described by critics as one of the best albums of 2019. It's the third number one album for the Cork man, who has strong Killarney connections. He previously enjoyed similar success with ‘Red To Blue’ in 2012 and ‘By The Rule’ in 2014. However, this one is particularly special as Mick recently parted ways with his record label. The album’s lyrics are written from the perspective of

Two Irishmen to cycle 28 countries for sick children Two Irishmen are to cycle across 28 countries and three continents to raise vital funds for two charities – CMRF Crumlin and the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation. Paddy Flynn from Waterford and Daithí Harrison from Tipperary will cycle from Sydney to Dublin

in 12 months, starting on August 4 next. As well as the cycle, both men will run an ultra-marathon in each of the 28 countries along the way. “One of the reasons we decided to take on the challenge was to raise vital money for two amazing charities – CMRF

Crumlin and the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation.” Daithí said. “We are really looking forward to learning about the cultures and histories of all the countries we’re visiting. It’ll be an exploration of the mind and a journey of the soul. We both believe that it’s our duty to be of

service to the generation that follow us, especially to those who need it most.” Daithí and Paddy are raising vital funds for CMRF Crumlin, the charity for Crumlin hospital and the National Children’s Research Centre (NCRC). 150,000 children walk through the doors of Crumlin hospital every year. One in 100 children in Ireland are born with a structural heart defect. 211 children are diagnosed with cancer every year in Ireland. All of them are treated at Crumlin Hospital. The NCRC is funding 43 research grants into paediatric conditions and illnesses including cardiology, immunology, infection, cancer and neonatology. “It’s really cool to think that we could be making a difference not only to the children in Australia and Ireland, but also to our local towns, and our local counties, Tipperary and Waterford, bringing excitement and inspiring people from all walks of life,” Paddy said. “We decided to raise money for CMRF and the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation because they do wonderful work for sick children in Ireland and Australia; and making the journey from Sydney to Crumlin will be a way of not only helping both charities but also marking a link between the two.” The two men said that they’re excited for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and really want to make the most of it. A video about their upcoming trip is available on YouTube and Instagram: of_mountains_and_men. See their website for more www.2cycle28.com. Trump survives impeachment vote

A bid to launch impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump has been blocked in the US House of Representatives. Texas Democrat Al Green filed the

resolution after the House voted to denounce Mr Trump's attacks aimed at four US congresswomen as racist. Mr Trump had been accused of racism and xenophobia for telling the members of congress to leave the country. But the measure failed to win enough support, with his fellow Democrats voting overwhelmingly against. As usual Trump was unperturbed by yet another allegation made against him. “So we just got a very big vote on impeachment — the most ridiculous project I’ve ever

been involved in,” he said. “We have the strongest economy in the world. We’ve rebuilt our military. We’ve knocked out regulations. We have the greatest tax cuts we’ve ever had — the biggest and best — including Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and including getting rid of a lot of different things that people didn’t want. We have just received an overwhelming vote against impeachment. And that’s the end of it. Let the Democrats now go back to work. Thank you very much.”

London Irish pay respects to a Kerry man The Kerry community in London came out in force this week to pay their last respects to John Lynch who died recently.

Green Flag award for OPW Parks Nine Office of Public Works sites were among the group of 60 Irish Parks and Gardens across Ireland that received 2019 Green Flags. The Green Flag Awards, administered by An Taisce, recognise and encourage the provision of good quality parks and green spaces that are managed in environmentally sustainable ways. The awards are marked on eight criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement. Listowel’s Childers Park and Woodlands, while not an OPW site, has retained its Green Flag for 2019 – the only such Green Flag in County Kerry. The announcement was made at a ceremony at Maynooth University on Tuesday which was attended the Cathaoirleach of the Listowel Municipal District, Cllr Jimmy Moloney, MD Manager Joan McCarthy and MD Officer Andrew Smith. St Stephen's Green Park, Castletown Demesne, Derrynane Historic Park, Fota Arboretum and Gardens, Garinish Island, Grangegorman Military Cemetery, the Irish National War Memorial Gardens, the Iveagh Gardens and the Phoenix Park will

be awarded the Green Flag at a the same ceremony. In addition to the Green Flag award, the Irish National War Memorial Gardens have been awarded Green Heritage Site Accreditation and Ashtown Walled Garden, Phoenix Park has won the ‘Walled Garden Category’ in the 2019 Green Flag for Parks Pollinator Project Award. Cllr Moloney said the honour was testament to the tremendous work being done to develop and sustain Childers Park and Woodlands as an attractive public amenity and he thanked all those who had contributed to maintaining the park to such a high standard. The Green Flag Award and Green Heritage Site Accreditation is a great catalyst for delivering improvement and engaging with the needs and expectations of visitors. The Green Flag Award Scheme supports best practice management of parks and green spaces across England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Australia and New Zealand, and has been running in Ireland since its pilot in 2015.

Mr Lynch, who had no known relatives, left Ballylongford for London with his parents at the age of two, and worked as a fitter. He spent all his life in the city without ever returning. He died last month in a care home in Greenford in the north west of the city. During his time there, he wore his Kerry jersey with pride, and became friendly with Donegal man Brendan “Tiny” Vaughan. Tiny is the kingpin of the Donegal community in London and responsible for countless fundraising and charity inspired events. When Tiny learned that John has passed away he used the media as well as social media channels to encourage anyone from Ireland living in London to pay their respects. Over 130 people attended the funeral

on Tuesday, including several prominent members of the Kerry Association London, former Kerry London Person of the Year, Vince Harty (Ballinskelligs) and Gerry Rotchford (Ballyduff). Mr Lynch’s coffin was draped in the Kerry flag as he made his final journey.

Dingle charities benefit from Ride Dingle cycle Local charities and schools have benefitted from this year’s Ride Dingle cycle – organised by Dingle Cycling Club and Elite Event Management. Organisers were on hand in Dingle this week to present cheques to nominated charities including €7,500 to Camphill Community Dingle. Plans have also been confirmed for the event to return on April 25, 2020 with registrations going on sale this August. Various amounts were donated to oth-

er local charities including Dingle Tidy Towns, Cuan Counselling Service, Dingle Cliff and Coast Rescue, Dingle St Vincent de Paul, Camp Community Council and Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation. Schools who benefitted also were Scoil An Fheirtearaigh, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, Castlegregory National School and Scoil Naomh Eirc whose support in manning food stations along the route was instrumental to the day’s success. The first ever Ride Dingle took place on

Sunday April 28, across the Dingle Peninsula. More than 1400 cyclists took on Slea Head and the Conor Pass in what proved to be a challenging and fun day out. Cyclists came from as far afield as Australia, the Cayman Islands and Japan to be part of the event. Cycle enthusiasts chose from two routes, a 55km route around Slea Head and a longer route of 120km, which then continued on to Conor Pass and Annascaul via Camp and back in to Dingle.

“We were delighted to partner with Dingle Cycling Club for the first ever Ride Dingle and are grateful for the support of local businesses and organisations whose help went a long way in ensuring the event’s success,” Oliver Kirwan, Event Organiser said. “We are thrilled to donate €16,500 and give something back to the local charities and schools which I hope will help them continue with the excellent work they do for their local communities around the Dingle Peninsula.”

Look brighter with an eye facial Eye facials have improved so much in recent years and the results are immediate. There are two types of eye facial available: Sothys eye facial and CACI non-surgical facial. Eye facials at one time were just considered as an add on to a full facial. However, there is now a 50 minute treatment on just the eye area alone. Sothys eye facial begins with a deep facial cleanse, then concentrates just on the eye area which is exfoliated with a hypoallergenic eye exfoliator, a serum is applied, and a porcelain spoon is then used to drain away excess fluid build-up, which also removes toxins. A mask with a tightening effect is then applied along with an Indian head massage to help you relax. It’s a fantastic treatment which gives you a brighter look. The CACI eye

non-surgical facial is a machine based facial. It starts with a cleanse and microdermabrasion for exfoliation over crows feet, forehead and in between brows with specific lifting eye movements for the brow, outer eyes and lymph drainage underneath the eye area. A CACI eye mask uses a positive galvanic current to push the hyaluronic acid infused in the cooling silicone eye mask, and a negative galvanic current closes the pores, finished with eye serum and eye cream. Killarney Credit Union can help with back-toschool costs The number of parents saying they are struggling with back-toschool costs is on the rise. A new national survey has found that more than three quarters of parents, 78 percent, find the costs a financial struggle. This is a substantial 11 percent increase on last year. The findings were revealed this week in a new national survey by the Irish League of Credit Unions. Half of parents said meeting costs was their biggest back-to-school related worry. One third said they would be forced to deny their children certain school items this year because they could not afford them. Extracurricular activities and new school shoes were amongst the items to be cut from the budget this year. Karena McCarthy, Youth & Marketing Officer of Killarney Credit Union said the credit union is all too aware of the struggle for parents this time of year. “We frequently assist parents in the South Kerry community around this time of year who need help either budgeting for the back-to-school spend, or taking out a loan to see them through. It’s understandable that these costs are a financial burden for so many when parents are paying €949 per primary school child. The spend is even higher for parents with secondary school children who

are forking out €1,399 per child,” she said. “We want parents to know we are here to help, if only to have a chat about how they can budget for the upcoming spend.” The survey also found that there was a slight drop (one percent) in the numbers approaching moneylenders. Parents saying they are relying on credit cards to cover the back-toschool spend also decreased by five percent, falling from 18 percent to 13 percent. “We consistently try to provide financial education to parents in the community and inform them of the extremely high interest rates charged by moneylenders. We are happy to see a fall in the numbers going this route, but still concerned that three percent of parents will approach moneylenders in an effort to cope with costs. Our message would be to chat to us first in the credit union before making this decision. Using moneylenders can result in a recurring

DAYS LIKE THIS Town awash with colour as rivals come head-to-head Killarney was awash with colour on Sunday as over 30,000 football fans gathered in the glorious sunshine as two of the biggest rivals in recent years came head-to-head in a do or die match. Thousands took to the town centre where they enjoyed the banter, food and drinks ahead of the 4pm clash in Fitzgerald Stadium – in what was a welcome boost to an otherwise weak tourist season. Killarney is well used to hosting Munster Finals on July Sundays, but last weekend’s Mayo fixture added new colour and atmosphere to the occasion. Mayo fans are known for travelling, and they did not let their side down on Sunday, but the sea of green and red was easily matched by supporters decked in Kerry’s green and gold.

Fitzgerald Stadium looked its best, the subtle refurbishment work carried out on a very tight budget over the last few weeks paid dividends. There can be no better advertisement for Killarney than a packed stadium, basking in the sunshine, beneath the majestic McGillycuddy Reeks. Hawkers sold Choc Ices and bottled water at hugely inflated prices but no one seemed to complain, such was the heat the coolness far out-weighed the prices. One long-time supporter from Fossa, who has been attending games at the stadium for over 60 years recalled the first time he had to pay for water. “A local farmer brought in creamery tanks and charged six pence a mouthful,” he explained to an assembled ad-hoc audience in the stadium.

As championship matches went, this was far from a classic, the home-side were in control by half-time and by midway through the second-half visiting fans started making their way towards the exits and the long drive home. It was hard to blame them, some punters reported delays of over an hour between Farranfore and Killarney prior to the match and they certainly did not want to get back in the same jam on the way home. Back in town after the game and the home fans were in a celebratory mood. Crowds spilled out of the pubs on to Main St and College St in scenes reminiscent of the old Munster final days. In fairness to the Mayo fans that hung around, they were gracious in defeat and enjoyed the hospitality and craic that Killarney is famous for. SPYSHOT: A Killarney Advertiser reader spotted the new Audi Q7 in Farranfore this week.

Audi Q7 world debut on Kerry roads There is a veil of secrecy around Kerry Airport this week as Audi introduces the yet-to-be launched Q7 to the world’s motoring press. The German firm has chosen Kerry to demonstrate the new car to international motoring journalists and from Monday this week several versions of the new car were driven on local roads ahead of its European launch later this summer. It was the first time that the new SUV was driven on a public road outside of Germany. Journalists arrived by private jet into Kerry International Airport from Audi’s headquarters in Ingolstadt in Germany

where they were introduced to the car and given the opportunity to test drive it on some of the county’s best known driving roads. Their findings and photographs of the car on Moll’s Gap and the Wild Atlantic Way will be published in nearly every major car magazine in the world. The car is not due to be released to the public until later this year with a Frankfurt Motor Show debut in September - the most likely first outing for the car. Audi engineers are staying in the Killarney region for the two weeks of the event.

Toyota Corolla set to be Ireland’s best-selling car Toyota’s Corolla could become Ireland’s best-selling car – again – if early sales indications for the month of July are anything to go by. The Corolla, in some shape or form, has been on sale in Ireland since 1973. It was first manufactured by the Japanese firm in 1966, but the first version never came to Ireland. Since then, over 40 million units have been sold worldwide, including over 200,000 units in Ireland over the last 46 years.

Now that Toyota has produced a hybrid version of its best-selling Corolla spurring new sales, local Toyota dealer Brian Bowler believes it could be the best-selling car in the country this month. “As of this week the all-new Toyota Corolla is the best-selling car in Ireland for 2019,” he said. Official figures are due to be published by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) later this month.

2ND ANNIVERSARY BARTLETT

In fond remembrance of Kathleen Bartlett, Late of 30 O’Kelly’s Villas, Killarney. A dear mother, Grandmother, GreatGrandmother, Sister, Neighbour and friend, who passed away on 21st July 2017.

The rock stood tall and strong Along the shore of life Weathering hardships sent by the world The trouble and the strife It protected the smaller structures That nestled by it’s side Despite storms of physical depletion Brought in by the tide Waves of worry chipped away the surface But the inner strength shone through A monument of pride and independence That rock dear Helen was you Your love is irreplaceable Your sense of humour was unique You make us laugh, still to this day With the remarks you used to speak The winds of change blew fiercely And took you far away But now you live in paradise Where we’ll meet again one day.

As each day dawns we think of you. As each night falls we pray for you. And throughout our lives no matter where, In our heart you are always there. We miss your smile, your joking ways. We miss the things you used to say. And when old times we do recall, It’s then we miss you most of all. Sadly missed by your wife Elizabeth, Sons Eugene, Seamus and Paudie. Anniversary Mass Sunday 21st July at 9 a.m. Church of Christ Prince of Peace, Fossa, Killarney.

2ND ANNIVERSARY DOHERTY

In loving memory of Helen Doran Late of 58 Arbutus Grove, Killarney, Who died on the 15th July, 2004. God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be So he put His arms around you And whispered “Come to me.”

A heart full of gold stopped beating Hard-working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us He chose to take the best. It’s lonesome here without you, We miss you more each day, Life doesn’t seem the same, Since you have gone away. When days are sad and lonely and everything goes wrong, We seem to hear you whisper, “Cheer up and carry on I love you” Each time we see your picture, You seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry, I’m in God’s hands, We’ll meet again someday” We miss you so much Mom love Crystal, Amy, Keith and Melissa. xxx

Kathleen’s second anniversary mass will be celebrated in St.Mary’s Cathedral on July 20th at 6.15pm.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

Please forgive a falling tear, A constant wish that you were here, Others have lost like this we know, But he was our loved one, And we loved him so.

Fondly remembered by your Grand-daughter Zarah.

With tearful eyes we watched you We watched you fade away And though we loved you dearly We could not make you stay. In fond remembrance of Kathleen Bartlett, Late of 30 O’Kelly’s Villas, Killarney. A dear mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister, Neighbour and friend, Who passed away on 21st July 2017.

So keep your arms around him Lord, And give him special care, Make up for what he suffered, And all that seemed unfair.

A bouquet of beautiful memories, Sprayed with a million tears, Wishing God could have spared you, If just for a few more years.

Just a prayer from the family who loved you, Just a memory fond and true, In our heart’s you will live forever, Because we thought the world of you. Love from Henry, Paula and extended family. x

Jesus came to the foot of the bed, These are the words we are sure he said, You suffered enough, take my hand, And come with me to a better land.

Little did we know, that day that God called your name, In life we loved you dearly in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you but in God we put our trust, In times as hard as this to have faith is a must. You left us wonderful memories imprinted deep within our heart, And although we cannot see you we are never far apart. Our family chain is broken and nothing stops the pain, But as God calls us, one by one the chain will link again. Your heart broken parents Billy and Joanie Xxx I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an after glow of smiles when life is done. I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. 20TH ANNIVERSARY MCSHARRY

“Believe me if all those Endearing young charms, Which I gaze on so fondly today Were to change by tomorrow And fleet in my arms, Like fairy gifts fading away, Thou would still be adored, As this moment thou art, Let thy loveliness fade as it will And around the dear ruin, Each wish of my heart, Would entwine itself verdantly still, It is not while beauty And youth are their own And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear, That the fervour and faith Of a soul can be known, To which time will but make Thee more dear, Oh the heart that has truly loved, Never forgets, But as truly loves on to the close, As the sun flower turns On her God when he sets, The same look, which she turned, When he rose”

In loving memory of Leon McSharry, Late of Ballyspillane, Killarney, Who died on the 17th July, 1999. RIP

A right Killarney welcome Kerry hammer Mayo to maintain unbeaten home record If you’re a player from a rival county, the ‘Welcome to Killarney’ signs leading into our little town must read like a threat. For a place renowned for receiving each and every one of its visitors with open arms, Killarney remains the least hospitable spot in the country when it comes to senior intercounty football. Kerry were superb against Mayo on Sunday and their unbeaten home run in the championship, which extends all the way back to 1995, remains fully intact. In the past 24 years, 31 teams have arrived at the Fitzgerald Stadium in search of a victory. 31 teams have failed to get one. We expected Mayo to provide one of the sternest – if not the sternest – test in years but for whatever reason, that’s not how it panned out. Perhaps three games in consecutive weeks had taken its toll, and there’s no denying that the absence through injury of Paddy Durcan, Matthew Ruane and Diarmuid O’Connor significantly weakened James Horan’s hand. Having said all that, Kerry were really good. Peter Keane made four changes from the dummy team that was named on Friday night and considering how things went down on the day, you certainly couldn’t fault his team selection or his tactics. There were a few eyebrows raised on the terrace when Shane Enright’s name was read out over the public address system but the Tarbert man had an excellent match at centre half back. Enright read the game very well and he was fully deserving of the warm ovation he received when he left the field in the 50th minute with the game all but won. It was a nice moment for a player who has been on the receiving end of some criticism in the past couple of years, and he has certainly played his way into contention for the rest of the championship.

IMMENSE There was some redemption, too, for David Moran who prior to Sunday’s game had struggled to find his feet after an extended spell out through injury. Moran was immense against Mayo, especially in the first half when he absolutely lorded it around the middle third. Moran was ably assisted by the dogged Adrian Spillane and if Kerry can get similar performances from the pair moving forward, our midfield will go from being a major problem to being a major problem for someone else. All of our defenders did well but I thought Jason Foley was head and shoulders above the rest. The former sprinter hardly put a foot wrong all day and he gave Darren Coen, one of the form players in the country, a really tough time of it. In attack, Kerry were electric. Seán O’Shea linked the play extremely well and what can you say about his clubmate Stephen O’Brien? His consistency this year has been frightening and you could make the argument that he has been Kerry’s player of the season so far. Of course, David Clifford might have something to say about that. You would have to feel sorry for Brendan Harrison. How do you mark the unmarkable? When David Clifford is on form (which is basically all of the time) and he’s getting regular service, there’s no stopping him. It’s damage limitation. You see it in the NBA when teams are dealing with “unguardable” players like Kevin Durant. They basically accept that he’s going to get 30 points. The goal is to stop him from going off for 40 or 50. It was good to see Paul Geaney getting 1-2 as well. There’s definitely more in him but his showing the last day will do his confidence no harm at all.

BROLLY I suppose things didn’t quite go to plan for James O’Donoghue on the day but I thought Joe Brolly was out of line with his criticism on The Sunday Game. Intercounty players obviously need to have thick skin and you expect some analysis to be negative, but it’s possible to be critical without being disrespectful. To say that a fella is “gone as a county footballer” is way over the top. Not even Eamon Dunphy in his pomp would say something like that. And Dunphy was generally talking about professionals, not amateurs. But look, Brolly obviously has previous when it comes to inflammatory remarks. This is the same pundit who said Gooch was a choker and the Kerry production line was finished, so I’d take anything he says about Kerry football with a pinch of salt. Kerry are now in a really strong position to advance to an All-Ireland semi-final. Ulster champions Donegal will be very tough opponents this weekend but confidence is high. Another big performance, and another victory, would really make things interesting.

Air raid Moran rules the skies as Kerry demolish old foes Mayo An inspirational performance by experienced midfielder David Moran proved crucial as Kerry got their Super 8s series off to a flying start against Mayo in Killarney.

score, O’Connor’s fifth, cut the deficit to eight but any faint hope the visitors had of a comeback was crushed two minutes later when the relentless Stephen O’Brien broke free of the Mayo defence before teeing up Paul Geaney for an easy goal.

Midfield has been an area of concern for Peter Keane’s side throughout the 2019 campaign but Moran and his partner Adrian Spillane, who was drafted in for the injured Jack Barry, completely dominated that particular department on Sunday. Kerry’s tactic of pushing up on the Mayo kickout really paid dividends, particularly in the first half when they decimated David Clarke’s restarts. Securing primary possession allowed the hosts to stage attack after attack and with Stephen O’Brien, Séan O’Shea and David Clifford to the fore, it didn’t take them long to run up a commanding lead.

James Horan’s side were awarded a penalty late on but Shane Ryan kept his clean sheet in tact by tipping O’Connor’s high effort onto the crossbar and over.

Kenmare clubmates O’Brien and O’Shea were typically industrious in Kerry’s half forward line and closer to goal, Clifford was typically sublime. The Fossa youngster kicked seven points in total and his sky-scraping free from near the right sideline was arguably the score of the game. But it wasn’t just the marquee forwards who caught the eye in that opening period. Kerry’s much maligned defence was much improved against Mayo with Jason Foley and the recalled Shane Enright playing starring roles. Mayo’s frequently errant kick-passing certainly made the backs’ job a bit easier but Kerry’s rearguard was impressive nonetheless.

|

The Kingdom led by 0-15 to 0-6 at the break and, in truth, the damage was done. Not much went right for Mayo on the day but there was some small consolation for talismanic forward Cillian O’Connor as he surpassed Kerry legend Colm Cooper as the highest scoring championship footballer of all time. A light ripple of Kerry applause greeted O’Connor’s record-breaking point in the 54th minute, but I suppose it was easy for us to be gracious by that stage. That

Same again, please

Before last weekend’s win over Mayo settled the nerves, there were fears in some quarters that this Sunday’s clash with Donegal could be an elimination game for Kerry. Now, we’re looking up. The Kingdom were rampant in Killarney last Sunday and the players will be feeling pretty good about themselves when they descend upon the capital to take on the Ulster champions in Croke Park. One swallow doesn’t make a summer but anxieties surrounding Kerry’s midfield and defence have been allayed somewhat by their showing in the Super 8s opener. The challenge now is to match and improve upon those efforts at HQ against a Donegal side who are considered by many to be the greatest threat to Dublin’s throne. Donegal have impressed throughout this year’s championship and although Meath had them on the ropes last time out, they ultimately emerged victorious with nine points to spare. Paddy McBrearty topscored for the men from Tír Chonaill with 1-6 as the evergreen Michael Murphy led by example with a buccaneering, Man of the Match performance. nDeclan Bonner has his side playing an attacking brand of football and Kerry will have to be mindful of the threat posed by marauding half back Ryan McHugh and in-form forward Jamie Brennan. The kickouts of goalkeeper Shaun Patton, formerly of Finn Harps, Derry City and Sligo Rovers, will be much different to the ones Kerry faced against

Mayo. Patton’s range of kicking would rival that of any keeper in the country and with plenty of big targets and willing runners to aim for, it’s a real weapon for this Donegal team. For Kerry’s part, they’ll be hoping for more of the same. There was a marked improvement around the middle third against Mayo and Kerry will need that midfield platform against Donegal so they can secure enough possession to feed their talented forwards. It’s a tough game to call. Kerry are onepoint favourites, almost exclusively, one would imagine, because of the Mayo result, but Donegal will be a different beast. Some good news for traditionalists ahead of this one: Kerry GAA have confirmed that Peter Keane’s team will be wearing their green and gold jerseys against Donegal and also against Meath in two weeks’ time.

|

MAYO v MEATH

In part one of Sunday’s double-header, Mayo will take on Meath in what is a must-win game for the men from the west. James Horan’s side will be keen to get their season back on track following the dejecting defeat to Kerry and you would fancy to handle Meath in Croker. Horan has indicated that both Diarmuid O’Connor and Matthew Ruane could be in line to return to action at some stage in the Super 8s. O’Connor, who captained Mayo to their National League title in March, has been out with a wrist injury while Breaffy midfielder Ruane is recovering from a broken collarbone. Whether or not the Meath game will come too soon for the influential pair remains to be seen but you would imagine that Horan will be leaving no stone unturned in his quest to lead Mayo into another All-Ireland semi-final.

GROUP 2

Dublin will be hoping to make it two from two when they host Roscommon at a neutral venue on Saturday. The Dubs were really challenged by Cork last weekend but any hopes of an upset were duly exterminated when Niall Scully, Ciarán Kilkenny and Brian Fenton all goaled between the 62nd and 65th minute. The reigning champions eventually ran out 13-point winners, which was a cruel scoreline as far as Cork are concerned. This is very much a do-or-die match for Roscommon but against Dublin, you don’t tend to have a say in the matter. It’s usually ‘die’. In the other game, Tyrone can secure their spot in the last four on Saturday and also effectively end Cork’s season in the process. Whether or not Cork’s final group game against Roscommon will have any significance depends entirely on Saturday’s results but either way, the home match will not be played at the recently redeveloped Páirc Uí Chaoimh. The Cork County Board announced on Tuesday that the fixture will be held at the much smaller Páirc Uí Rinn as the surface in Páirc Uí Chaoimh is being replaced with a new reinforced pitch.

Former Rally of the Lakes national winning crew to swap seats Brother and sister crew Rob and Tara Duggan will swap seats for this weekend’s Imokilly Rally. The Aghadoe-based crew won the national section of the Rally of the Lakes in 2018 and the modified section of the Killarney Historic Rally in 2017. On both occasions Rob drove and Tara called the notes. This weekend they will swap seats. Tara will drive a Ford Fiesta R2 marking her second time behind the wheel while her brother will offer his support from the passenger seat. “It is my first ever time in the passenger seat,” Rob told the Kil-

larney Advertiser. “I am looking forward to it. Tara did drive a Ford Ka years ago with our brother Andrew but this is my first time co-driving.” Sunday’s event is based in Middleton in east County Cork and gets underway at 10.20am. Other local crews on the event include father and son team Charlie and Johnny Hickey. Denis Hickey and Seán Nolan and Dave Slattery and Denis Coffey who field a trio of Ford Escorts.

Late entry Vincent O’Shea and Eoin O’Leary, while seeded in the 70s will run much further up the field in their BMW M1. Barraduff’s Shane Doyle and William Kelleher are another local team depending on BMW power and will field their older E30 version to mark their first outing since May’s Rally of the Lakes. Local junior drivers to look out for on Sunday include Peter Falvey and Andrew Cronin, the category winners on the West Cork Rally in March return af-

ter a puncture curtailed their Rally of the Lakes attempt. Kieran Reen and Mark O’Leary, class winners on the local rally in May, will be junior category contenders in their Honda Civic. Lispole’s Alan O’Sullivan with Headford’s Dean Slattery on the notes continue their debut season in another Civic. Denis Nagle and Donnagh Crowley face Billy McCarthy and John Falvey in a brace of locally run Nissan Micras for Class 9 honours.

Noel O’Sullivan Jr returns to rally action this week alongside Jon Armstrong. The pair will contest Saturday’s Down Rally in a Mini World Rally Car from the McGeehan Motorsport stable. They finished an impressive fourth overall on the Galway International Rally in February but have not competed together since. “Jon is teaming up with McGeehan and Codemasters for the Down Rally,” said Muckross-based O’Sullivan. “It’s really only to try to get miles and rallies under his belt for next year.”

Paul Nagle and Craig Breen got familiar with their new Hyundai i20 WRC by finishing fifth overall on last weekend’s Rally Estonia. It marked the first time that the Irish team drove for the Hyundai Motorsport team. They will return to the World Rally Championship on next month’s Rally Finland and the Estonian event was all part of their preparations for that rally. They were up to third at one point in the rally but were not really watching the clocks and results. “My confidence is building with every kilometre,” said Breen.
