Garda resources stretched to the limit on Saturday night | By Sean Moriarty
Garda resources in Killarney were stretched to the limit on Saturday night as they responded to three separate incidents that all took place between 11pm and 12 midnight. The most serious incident resulted in the unexplained death of a man in his 20s that occurred on Muckross Road at around 11.15. At the same time, the now infamous anti-social behaviour incident took place on Main St and within minutes a fight involving several youths broke out on College St. Separately, earlier in the day a motorcyclist was killed in a road traffic accident on the Ring of Kerry and Killarney Gardai were tasked with investigating that crash too. “An Garda Síochána had resources on patrol in the Killarney District with local Gardai reporting a large number of persons socialising in Killarney over the evening. An Garda Síochána in Killarney were involved in the ongoing investigation of a Fatal Road Traffic Collision and responded to a number of further incidents including the serious investigation into the unexplained death of a male,” a spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. Superintendent Flor Murphy said that the first incident on the Muckross

Road took up the majority of their resources but they still attended the other two incidents within minutes of getting the call. “Our members were administrating first aid on the Muckross Road, this turned into a tragedy for all involved,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “We responded to the other two incidents in a short space of time but a lot of our resources were at the Muckross Road helping the emergency services.” Gardaí are continuing to investigate the Muckross Road incident which has been upgraded to a criminal investigation. A post-mortem has since been completed, the results of which will not be
released for operational purposes. Meanwhile Superintendent Murphy confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that both the Main St and College St incidents are under investigation. “An Garda Síochána does not comment on an extract of audio/video footage, the timeline and context of which cannot be determined,” said the spokesperson. “Gardaí did attend College St shortly before midnight on August 29 as a crowd had gathered.” Anyone with information, on any incident is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 6671160, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
“We must all stand together” says Mayor after viral anti-social videos STAND TOGETHER: Mayor of Killarney Brendan Cronin "The last thing we need is a local lockdown" The Mayor of Killarney this week said as he put out a call for the people of Killarney to present a united front in the continued effort to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. Cllr Brendan Cronin was speaking after representatives of Kerry County Council and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce met with An Garda Síochana on Wednesday in relation to a well-documented incident

on Main Street on Saturday night. The three bodies are working together to assure everyone that Killarney will always be a welcoming, safe destination, providing the highest of standards, with wonderful facilities for the enjoyment of the general public. Mayor Cronin, Municipal District Manager, Angela McAllen and the President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Paul Sherry met local members of An Garda Síochána. “We all need to stand together, business people, residents and visitors,” Mayor
Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser. “The last thing we need is a local lockdown, like what we saw in Kildare recently. If that happens here in Killarney it will decimate the town.” Wednesday’s meeting was convened to discuss what was described as an exceptional incident during what has been a busy summer period in the town despite the various COVID-19 restrictions in effect. It was acknowledged that the vast majority of people who visit and socialise in Killarney do so responsibly. 'We are pleased that An Gar-
da Síochána is investigating this one-off incident and it was agreed that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated,” a joint-statement said. “There has always been excellent stakeholder engagement in Killarney, and we continue to work together to ensure measures are in place to facilitate a safe and enjoyable visit to our town for all. In light of the increasing numbers of coronavirus cases nationally, we are appealing to members of the public and businesses to continue to act responsibly to limit the spread of the virus,” they said.
Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce this week said that they are very disappointed and upset by the antics and behaviour of a group of people who blatantly ignored social distancing requirements on the streets of the town in the early hours of Sunday morning. They said that an overwhelming majority of people in Killarney and businesses in the town have adhered to public health guidelines and restrictions introduced by the Government and Health Service Executive during the course of the pandemic. However, it's disappointing that "some people see fit to act irresponsibly with little or no respect for others", Chamber President Paul Sherry said. "Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce pleads with everybody to behave in a responsible manner in terms of implementing COVID-19 social distancing requests and to make one final push to ensure everybody can finish the holiday season in a safe manner. The Chamber encourages people to adhere to social distancing, face coverings and other public health guidelines, as recommended by the authorities. Kerry County Council and businesses in Killarney have introduced several measures to keep everybody safe and we would urge everybody to respect them."
DISAPPOINTED: Chamber President Paul Sherry says the weekend's antics in town is disappointing.

Tributes to Cork man who lost his life on Muckross Road | By Sean Moriarty Tributes have been paid to the young man who died on the Muckross Road on Saturday night.

No damage done to defib phone box
Darragh Sheehan (26) who was from Doneraile in North Cork was believed to be visiting the town with a group of friends. The circumstances of his death are the subject of a Garda investigation. He was laid to rest on Wednesday morning at Oldcourt Cemetery in his home village. An employee of the Mallow based EPS Group, colleagues described him as a quiet, diligent and conscientious member of staff. “Darragh was a valued member of our manufacturing workshop team since he joined us in 2017. He was a pleasure to work with, a quiet, diligent and conscientious team player who will
be sadly missed by all his colleagues. We offer our heartfelt condolences and support to his family and fiancée at this terrible time,” EPS managing director Pat Buckley told the Killarney Advertiser. His survived by his parents Tom and Hannah, brother of Kevin and sister Fiona and fiancée Karen.
There is no such thing as bad publicity according to members of Killarney Cardiac Response Unit whose traditional phone box featured on a viral anti-social behaviour video last weekend. | By Sean Moriarty The Main St phone box, which houses an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), a device crucial in the early intervention of heart attack victims was not damaged in an incident which showed young men dancing on its roof while a crowd gathered beneath to cheer him on. The video was subsequently viewed over 300,000 times on social media platforms while RTÉ carried it on its main evening news bulletin on Sunday night. The incident happened around midnight on Saturday night and received widespread condemnation as the crowd breached several social distancing rules. However, Killarney Cardiac Response Unit (KCRU) said the incident helped highlight the work of its members as it reminded people that the traditional style
phone box is not a tourist attraction but a defibrillator hut and that it put their efforts on the national news. The Main St telephone kiosk was the first such unit to be converted into an AED house. It was officially opened in November 2016 by a volunteer group called Heart of Killarney. “It is the most famous phone box in the country this week,” PRO Carole Moran told the Killarney Advertiser. “This highlighted what we do, the work of our volunteers and many people would not know it is home to an AED.” Her only concern was the incident caused damage to the unit or the phone box itself. “We had a team of maintenance volunteers on site at 8am Sunday morning and we are happy to report that no damage has been done,” she added.

Cleeney Roundabout Killarney
Rock Road funding a step in the right direction | By Sean Moriarty The Ballydribeen Residents Association has welcomed the provision of €210,000 that will go towards new footpaths on the eastern side of Rock Road but warned more needs to be done. The new pathway will run from the Cleeney Roundabout to New Road. It was in the original scope of works as part of the new car and coach park that opened last summer on Rock Road. The funding will go towards the widening of footpaths and will be designed to facilitate access from the large housing estate at Ballydribben to schools on New Road. Last month the Ballydribeen Residents Association launched a campaign to create a safer entry and exit to their estate. They are to seek an urgent meeting with Kerry County Council in
an effort to solve ongoing road safety and traffic management issues at the exit of the Tralee Road estate. While the funding, announced earlier this week under the Government’s Active Travel Measures Allocation for 2020 programme, will enhance safety measures along Rock Road. Association chairman Liam Grimes said work at the northern side of the Cleeney Roundabout remains on the priority list for his members. “Anything that improves road safety has to be welcomed,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “But the new footpath needs to be extended to Ballydribeen. Ideally we would like for all our children to be able to cycle to school.” The Rock Road project will also improve pedestrian access to the town centre from the new Rock Road car and coach parks.

Thousands of TikTok fans got a chance to see the beauty of Killarney as four of Ireland’s best known TikTokers decided to holiday here this week. Killarney was the chosen spot for the staycation as Denis O’Sullivan from Cork, James Buckley from Mayo, Gordon Forbes from Cork and Travis Leon from Donegal, who have 217,000 followers between them - made a number of TikTok videos at various locations including Ross Castle and the lakes of Killarney. On Wednesday afternoon the group were recognised in the town by young TikTok fans after they enjoyed a bite to eat at The Shire. Ireland’s most loved TikTokers the four became friends and often post videos edited together which gives them a combined reach of up to one million views. They decided to holiday in Kerry this week beginning with a trip to Dingle followed by a few days in Killarney town. When they arrived here they spoke to the Killarney Advertiser saying how beautiful the town is. “We felt so welcome and comfortable in county Kerry we had to come here on staycation,“ Gordon said. “On Sunday, we were in Dingle. | By Sean Moriarty Mrs Downey, a popular local woman who died following a tragic accident near the Cleeney Roundabout in July, was a dedicated member of both Killarney Celtic and Killarney Legion. Her son Chris is a member of the CueClub snooker club in town. These three sporting clubs as well as a number of business people have come together to gather funds so the late Mrs Downey’s children can have money set aside to enter third level or for other educational reasons. The group will host a two-day golf classic at Beaufort Golf Club on September 25 and 26 with all funds raised going to the newly established Joanne Downey Family Fund. Connie O’Sullivan of CueClub came up with the idea and he quickly gathered support from the other clubs and busi-
ness interests in the town. The team behind the fundraiser includes, Dermot Cronin (Kerry Mortgage Centre); Tommy Galvin (Legion GAA); Noelle Crosbie (Noelle’s Café) Keith Cummins (KCC Fit-outs); Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan (Fáilte Hotel); Tim Jones (Killarney Celtic); Tim O’Sullivan; Patricia O’Sullivan (CueClub) and Pat O’Neill (Style Suite Hair Salon). “I wanted to do something for the young Downey family who have been left behind,” Connie told the Killarney Advertiser. “The family are personal friends of mine and Joanne did so much for all these local clubs so I had no problem getting their support.” Entries and timesheet are being managed by Connie’s brother Tim and he can be contacted on 087 927 3694.

Three Killarney men set off from Derry yesterday (Thursday) in an attempt to cycle the entire Wild Atlantic Way. | By Sean Moriarty | By Sean Moriarty The famed 2,500km driving route passes through nine counties and three provinces, stretching from county Donegal's Inishowen Peninsula in Ulster to Kinsale, County Cork, in Munster. Brothers Benny and Donnacha Cassidy from The Park, and Tom Daly who is secretary of Killarney Cycling Club, have set a target of between 300 and 500kms of cycling a day and hope to arrive in the County Cork tourist town within six days. Their daily target will depend on weather and other prevailing conditions. Benny is no stranger to ultra-cycling events and only last weekend finished fourth on the Cycling Ireland sanctioned Donegal Atlantic Way Ultra Cycle. He completed that event in 19.5 hours and only stopped for a total of 20 minutes. Last weekend’s route started and finished in Letterkenny and covered the Inishowen Peninsula as well as the entire coastline of County Donegal. His brother Donnacha, and Tom, will revisit most of last weekend’s route today (Friday) before heading south from Donegal town. The brother’s father Brendan acted as support vehicle driver last weekend but this week they are on their own. “Cycling Ireland events require a sup-
port vehicle, especially for the night sections,” Brendan told the Killarney Advertiser. “I know how hard it was as I had to drive for those 19 hours. This week’s event is about personal challenges rather than a competition.” The trio hope to arrive in Kinsale by Tuesday. Their finish estimate is based on Benny’s previous solo attempt in 2018 when he took six days to complete the challenge.

The McSweeney family business reopened their Sandtrap Grill on Wednesday for the first time since March. The Sandtrap is part and parcel of the landmark McSweeney Arms Hotel on College St but a key part of its official title is missing. The Sandtrap Bar and Grill has reopened as a restaurant only after third-generation proprietor Kelly Ann McSweeney, following months of governmental indecisiveness, said she just could not wait any longer. While the Sandtrap Bar and Grill is renowned for its high-quality bar food it is first and foremost a local's bar and Kelly Ann’s loyalty to her long-term customers meant she was not willing to open her bar for food only until this week. Simply, she felt uncomfortable charging her locals €9, for the so-called substantial meal. “These people came to my 21st and danced the night the way,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “They gave me fivers when I made my First Communion. They are family friends.” However, constant changes by the Government, and without decisive opening dates set for the reopening of pubs, she changed her stance and reopened the Sandtrap – but only as a restaurant and not as a bar that happens to serve food
too. “We are open as a sit down restaurant,” she added. “Even the televisions will be turned off.” The Sandtrap Bar and Grill is a renowned sports bar and is particularly popular with horse racing fans and Dr Croke’s supporters. Kelly Ann and her parents, Tony and Pauline, have introduced a range of measures to ensure they more than comply with the COVID-19 regulations. They are encouraging people to prebook and credit card details will be taken at booking time, all to comply with the contract tracing rules and limited waiting times when people arrive. “All our favourite dishes are on the menu. I will greet you at the door, we have an automatic sanitisation station at the door,” she said. “We are opening in September so hopefully I will know everyone. We were fully booked on Wednesday night – mainly locals.” As the accommodation portion of the hotel will not reopen until March next year, she was able rearrange the hotel’s foyer and breakfast room to accommodate more diners. “It is very exciting to be back but it tugs my heart that I cannot open my bar as a bar, as my grandfather Christy did 70 years ago this year,” she added. "He is the reason I do what I do."

Funding available to make town more cycle friendly | By Sean Moriarty Plans to make Killarney a cycling friendly town have taken a step forward after €620,000 in Government funding for cycling projects was released this week. Active Travel Measures Allocations for 2020 were announced by the Government this week. The majority of the funds (€450,000) is allocated for a new cycleway connecting Muckross Road to Ross Road. The existing footpath on this section of Muckross Road is substandard and road widths restrict the development of cycling facilities. It is proposed to build a new cycleway, off the Muckross Road, that will run from Ross Castle to the Flesk Bridge close to the lake shores. “This pathway will be a wonderful addition to the recreational facilities of the area and will allow walkers and cyclists to travel from Ross Castle to Muckross House without having to contend with the traffic congestion close to town,” Cllr Michael Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser. “The pathway will be fully lighted to
allow for safe use at night time and will be an invaluable facility for individuals and groups pursuing fitness routines. It has taken many years to receive the allocation and despite many disappointments the news of the allocation is to be celebrated. I thank most sincerely the groups and individuals whose cooperation made this development possible.” Cllr Marie Moloney also welcomed the news. At the recent Killarney Municipal District meeting she raised concerns about a number of dangerous cycling incidents she has witnessed, especially between McSweeney’s Corner and her offices on Park Road. “Anything that takes cycling off the footpaths has to be welcomed and on to dedicated paths,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “I have raised concerns about the dangers of cycling on footpaths and while I would love to see ‘No Cycling’ signs painted on footpaths, this funding is not allocated for that purpose but it is to be welcomed. Cycling has become a big issue. It is a lovely pastime and it seems since the lockdown the world and his mother has gone cycling, but our foot-
4.9.2020 paths must remain safe for other users too.”Another €150,000 has been granted for the design of an interconnected network of cycleways in the town centre. “It is logical and proper that cycle ways would be interconnected in order to ensure safety and enjoyment for the cyclists. This has been done in some other towns and it greatly enriches the cycling experience,” added Cllr Gleeson. An additional €20,000 is available for the provision of new bicycle parking facilities in the town. These are in addition to the new bike stands built in several town centre locations last year.
COVID case confirmed at Kerry school
CYCLIST: Local cycling enthusiast Elizabeth Switzer.
First year students in a Kerry secondary school were yesterday (Thursday) been sent home after a confirmed case of COVID-19 became known. The school, who followed all HSE guidelines, immediately alerted parents to collect their children once they became aware of the case. A national school in the affected area also sent home fourth class pupils as a precaution shortly afterwards. It’s understood there may be a family connection linking both schools to the outbreak. It’s believed that the affected children had not been in either school yesterday and informed both schools once the results became known. All who were in close contact this week are making arrangements to be tested for the Coronavirus via their doctor and will be sent to the HSE testing centre at Ballymullen Barracks in Tralee.

€25k sculpture commission for Killarney company | By Michelle Crean A 62k square foot brewing and distilling enterprise due to open in Killarney next summer is offering a major €25,000 sculpture commission to Kerry artists. Killarney Brewing and Distilling Company (KBD) plans to install an eye-catching, unique and creative work outside its state-of-the-art visitor centre and production facility currently under construction on the Ring of Kerry road at Fossa. The announcement of the lucrative sculpture commission for the spectacularly located site overlooking the Gap of Dunloe is a timely boost for Kerry artists hard-hit by the Coronavirus pandemic. “In an effort to add further aesthetic depth to the new world-class facility, we are looking for a stunning piece of art that will both complement the structure and excite the visitor,” the company directors said. “The sculpture will take centre stage directly in front of our facility and will greet visitors as they approach on foot. special sculpture and keep the creation on home turf,” they said. “Collaborative partnerships among artists are also welcome.” The deadline for receipt of applications is Friday, September 25, at 5pm. It is anticipated that the project would commence during 2020 and be completed by March 2021. In addition to a craft brewery and spirits
production facility, the site will offer a world class visitor experience hosting daily brewery and distillery tours, a 180seat upscale bistro, a gala dinner venue, gin school, chocolatier and a rooftop patio overlooking the Gap of Dunloe. Once fully operational, it will employ over 85 people and aims to attract in excess of 100,000 annual visitors. KBD is the parent company that owns
both Killarney Brewing Company Ltd and Killarney Distilling Company. Killarney Brewing Company was founded in 2013 by Killarney entrepreneurs, Tim O’Donoghue, Paul Sheahan, and their Chicago-based business partner, Liam Healy, who has family connections in Kilbrean, Killarney. The company currently employs 12 fulltime staff and 15 part-time staff producing a range of hugely popular craft beers and bespoke spirits. Killarney Brewing Company operates a taproom and woodfired pizza restaurant on the Muckross Road, just a five minute walk from the town centre. “This is the next step in our evolution and delving into the spirits world is very exciting. To add to our existing beer portfolio and introduce Killarney Whiskey to the world is something we have been talking about since 2013; it's now becoming a reality." Prospective artists can obtain further information and insights regarding KBD through the company website www.killarneybrewing.com or by emailing tim@ killarneybrewing.com.

BEHIND YOUR BUSINESS
LOYALTY: Stephen O'Leary says the personal touch is why they are different. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy
The loyalty of our customers is what keeps us going O’Leary’s Expert Electrical has been a permanent fixture on Plunkett St since 1960. | By Sean Moriarty The family run firm, now operated by brothers Michael and Stephen O’Leary, sons of the store’s late founder Donie, is the go-to place in Killarney for electrical appliances. “The loyalty of our customers from Killarney and beyond is what keeps us going and I want to say thanks to them,” Michael told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "We offer a personal touch in all our services and that is why we are different.” Like everyone else they were initially required to close in March as part of the national effort to prevent the spread of Coronavirus but remained on call to provide customers with essential services. Their Plunkett St premises is owned by the firm so overheads were controlled during the lockdown period.
“Our financial exposure while substantial, particularly by way of stocks, was limited, but I can’t imagine what it was like for a business that was either renting a premises or paying a mortgage,” he said. The O’Leary brothers were one of the first Killarney businesses to answer a county wide appeal to donate goods or services to staff at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) by providing new televisions to the staff canteen at the Tralee hospital. Since the shop reopened on June 29 business has been better than anticipated but he said that they "are still a far cry from the usual expected levels of sales for the time of year”. The majority of their hotel and allied tourism industry work took a big hit this year. This would include the sales and service of systems, TVs and associated industrial products to the hospitality sector. “Our customers in the tourist industry were hardest hit, both the hotels themselves and the staff that worked in the industry.”
Conversely, the ‘staycation’ market provided some unexpected business. In order to comply with guidelines some hotels and guesthouses no longer provide appliances in rooms. This resulted in increased sales of small appliances such as kettles and hairdryers in order to accommodate the holiday makers desperate for a cuppa. Interestingly hair care appliances continue to be popular even after the hairdressers and barbers reopened on June 29, indicating a new DIY trend. “We can’t keep hair clippers on the shelves,” Michael added. One positive is that construction remains relatively strong with both new builds and renovation work back in full swing. This is reflected in the sales of kitchen appliances and home entertainment products. Michael is also keen to point out the advantage of doing business with a town centre family operation. “We provide a service that the online stores just cannot match,” he said. “We are always available for support should a situation arise even outside normal
business hours. It is hoped that the ‘Shop Local’ initiative will encourage customers to support businesses such as ours to recover from the effects of the enforced shut down." Not keen to get involved in the ongoing debate on the future of Plunkett Street's pedestrianisation in place until COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, he did point out one unique advantage. “There are set down bays provided in College Square and my staff will gladly take your goods to your vehicle and help you load,” he said. Walking into the premises inspires confidence too. A simple chain style barrier allows people to stop at the front door and while customers use the hand sanitisation station a member of staff meets, greets and escorts them to view the in-store display. COVID-19 has identified the benefits of the more traditional way of doing business and this personal touch is just one of the reasons O’Leary’s will be assured a place on Plunkett St for the foreseeable future.

WEDDING
4.9.2020
Wedding Woes turn to wedding wow! With just 59 days to turn their wedding day around due to COVID-19 the question still remained right up to the last day if the wedding would go ahead - but thankfully Nóra Coakley and Sean Fitzmaurice finally made it up the aisle and sealed the deal with a kiss. Nora, from Rathmore village daughter of Eilish and John, and Sean from Ballyseede son of Brigid and John, had originally planned to have 70 guests at Gougonbarra Church followed by a reception with 270 in the West Lodge Bantry on July 3. However, as lockdown kicked in, the couple, who met seven years ago and got engaged in 2018, thought it might not even go ahead this year. With a massive change to all their plans due to the new restrictions, including whittling the guest numbers down to just 50 family and close friends, they successfully pulled it off on August 15. "It was somewhat unusual," Nora told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "We just had to roll with the punches! Reorganising the day meant the
couple had to find a new church and reception venue. Super organised Nóra, who works as an SNA in Coláiste Gleann Lí in Tralee, was delighted to secure Rathmore Church and the Great Southern Killarney. "It felt weird in the church looking down at the guests as everyone was wearing masks. But it still felt like a normal day. It was a big huge family day out, we all just wanted a fun night out. It was brilliant," she said. "We were married by Fr Pat O'Donnell, and the Great Southern were amazing taking on a wedding at short notice but it was no problem to them. It really felt like a normal wedding." Bridal party on the day included Nóra's only sister Siobhán as Maid of Honour and her childhood best friend Jane Bastible. Flowergirls included Nóra's nieces Orlaith (2) and Claduette Coakley who is 10-months-old. Sean's two best friends, Sean Casey and Luke O'Sullivan, who he has known since he was three years-old took on best man duties. Pageboys were Nóra's nephews John Michael (3) and 10-month-old Darragh Coakley. Special touches on the day included

Nóra's t w i n brother Ciarán singing her down the aisle to 'You'll be in My Heart Forever' by Phil Collins. Her parents wore face masks which matched their outfits made by The Marion Players Sewing Ladies who also helped with lots of other last minute jobs including painting walls, finishing Mass booklets and taking up the bride's and bridesmaid's dresses before the big day. "My cousin Mairead Cashman in Dubai was supposed to sing in the church so instead she sent me a video of her singing it that morning as well as videos from my aunts, uncle and cousins." Sean's Defender, which resembles and old ambulance, was also part of their special day, she added. "He used that on our first date which I had to push - so that was our wedding car." She added that they had a great day and night which was finished off with an evening of dancing as they had hired a DJ.

BUSINESS OF WEEK THE
Positive physical activity with The Sequel Way
The Sequel Way, established by local entrepreneur Ethan McGrath, offers the most advanced and specialised services specifically tailored to client's exercise prescriptions, therapy and rehab within gyms, pools, outdoors and the comfort of peoples' homes. Ethan, from Kilcummin, is a recent graduate of Health and Leisure specialising in adapted physical activity for people of all ages and abilities. He started his business through Enterprise Ireland, run in the Tom Crean Business Centre in Tralee last year, and quickly gained a partnership with The Aquila Club at The Gleneagle Hotel where he offers a variety of services from one-to-one personal training, group fitness classes, chair aerobics for adults 65+ and aqua aerobics.
"I also partnered with a fantastic company called Mobility Genie who are one of Ireland's leading supply of mobility aids," Ethan told the Killarney Advertiser. One of the biggest issues in the health, well-being and the fitness industry at the moment is it is a very "one shoe fits all" approach, he explained. "The Sequel Way is one of very few services that caters for people of all ages and abilities with an aim to promote full inclusion in its services."
The business is currently running a large number of outdoor sessions in Killarney National Park and many surrounding rural areas in Kerry that consist of people of various abilities ranging from 20 up to 70 all within the one class. The company also caters for couple’s fitness and one-to-one starting each morning at 6am and finishing as late as 9pm. The biggest issue within the disability sector at the moment is there are few programmes, services and service providers to cater for demands within health, well-being and fitness, he added. “I feel a big problem with many personal trainers and coaches in Ireland is they don’t factor in the individual's needs and abilities when it comes to doing group classes for example. If you’re not able, for
whatever reason it is, then you are told to go away, or you would end up not going back because you feel you are unable to participate like everyone else." He added that since COVID-19 hit, the company went online with its services offering a progressive eight week exercise and nutrition programme specifically tailored to clients goals and needs. The Sequel Way continues to grow at a rapid pace with its clientele getting larger each week that passes. “I hope to expand throughout Ireland in the coming years providing the essential services and programmes required to cater for the ongoing and increasing demand within the sector.

Chemtrails Over the Country Club 'Chemtrails Over the Country Club', originally titled 'White Hot Forever', is the upcoming seventh studio album and sixth major-label studio album by Lana Del Rey. The album is set to be released tomorrow (September 5).
'Feminism Backwards' is part memoir, part documentary. A founding member of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement, Rosita Sweetman gleefully recalls the triumphs – and the tribulations – of trying to drag a reluctant Ireland into the 20th Century, crucially, re-appraising 'Chains or Change' the IWLM’s famous pamphlet, detailing what life was like for women in 1970s Ireland. 'Feminism Backwards' is also a howl of despair at how women have been treated worldwide down through the centuries, and how misogyny and sexual repression got such a stranglehold on Ireland. Having a survived a marriage break up Rosita re-found her feminism sadly buried, along with her chutzpah. She passionately believes feminism is not about blaming men, or pushing a few women to the top so they can be ‘she-men’ for the patriarchy. It's about creating a world fit for everyone. Rosita passionately believes feminism is not about blam-
already been written. Del Rey estimated that the record would most likely be released within 12 to 13 months of the interview, in 2020, as a surprise release. Del Rey also revealed that the record will sound similar to her previous album. Del Rey took to Instagram on May 21 this year to announce the release date of the album saying “I’m sure there will be tinges of what I’ve been pondering in my new album”.

Out with the old and in with the new bulbs!
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION: Sneem Digital Hub manager Aidan Murray with Mayor of Kerry Patrick O'Connor-Scarteen.
Digital hub
plans to bring people back to South Kerry | By Sean Moriarty Sneem Digital Hub is now reverting attention back to the core aim of bringing people to South Kerry to work remotely. After an exceptionally busy summer with people co-working from the hub and having to turn people away due to COVID capacity restrictions, the hub is now ready for workers to return. With one family having moved to the area, and a further four currently exploring the opportunity, it is evident that COVID-19 enforced remote working has led to many people realising that they can work and live wherever they would like without any negative impact to their current career or business goals. "It's great to see the Sneem Digital Hub getting off to such a strong start, obviously COVID-19 social distancing would have limited numbers, however they have had an exceptionally busy couple of months,” manager Aidan Murray said. I'm sure that even in the winter the Digital Hub in Sneem could be relatively busy. It's great to see such hubs throughout Kerry giving people in rural areas options of alternative working arrangements, it also enables people to move to places like Sneem and continue their work from digital hubs. In the last few years it was great
to see the Government and Kerry County Council assist the local hard working committee in helping get the digital hub up and running.” County Mayor Patrick Connor-Scarteen paid a surprise visit to the hub last week. “When someone moves from the likes of Dublin to somewhere like Sneem, they are eliminating traffic congestion and commutes, surrounding themselves in beautiful scenery, availing of a much healthier and safer lifestyle,” Patrick Connor-Scarteen told the Killarney Advertiser. “They become part of a vibrant and inclusive community, getting far more focused attention on their child’s education and development with lower pupil-teacher ratios. Added to that they are ensuring a lot more money in their pockets.” Both the mayor and the hub manager believe that moving to South Kerry could have financial advantages for individuals too. “They were paying €2,200 per month for a two-bed apartment in Dublin and could have moved to a six-bed house overlooking the sea in Sneem for €700. Together we calculated that the savings in rent would be the equivalent of a €36,000 pay rise for them, taking tax into account. The benefits of such a move are innumerable,” Mr Murray added.
September is one of my favourite months of the year – autumn being my favourite season. There is so much interest in the garden, and so many nice jobs to be done. I enjoy ripping out seasonal plants, as the consolation prize is so worth it. What am I talking about? Why, bulbs of course! Out with the old, in with the new. September and October are the ideal months for planting out spring flowering bulbs, any later and the quality of the flower starts to deteriorate. Single flowered yellow daffodils are still the most popular, but there are so many bulbs it’s like visiting a sweet shop. If you have a grove of trees, bluebells are an obvious choice. Here in Killarney we are so lucky to have bluebells and wild garlic growing naturally. It can be difficult to emulate this at home, as both like a light humus rich soil, which only years of falling leaves can create. Tulips are always high on my list of priorities – however, my heavy clay soil does not suit them at all. They originally come from the loose, sandy soil of the Middle East, so I grow them mostly in pots. They like a sandy soil, with some added Growmore or bonemeal, which will help them to grow into strong plants without depleting the bulb too much. This ensures strong plants year after year. Muscari, or grape hyacinth, are a great little blue flowered plant, naturalising easily and beautiful as a backdrop to yellow daffs, white or pink tulips and pink hyacinths. Muscari are also very bee friendly, being one of the first nectar rich plants to flower. Crocus, likewise, are excellent for bees, also because they have a good store of pollen, which provides the bees with protein. Crocus also naturalise
happily, doing very well in lawns. There are also autumn flowering crocus, properly known as Colchicum, which flower in November before the leaves appear. I always forget where I put them, and they are a lovely surprise each year. Some of the earliest flowering bulbs are the pretty chionodoxa, small, star shaped flowers in blue, mauve and white, they naturalise happily, produce lots of flowers and are very reliable. Crocus ‘Prins Klaus’ also makes an appearance in very early spring; it has white flowers with purple outer petals. Scilla is another early riser, often out before the snowdrops. Scilla come in blue, mauve and white, and tolerate heavy soil. They are like mini bluebells, and very reliable year after year. Snowdrops are bulbs I tend to forget about, as they do not grow for me. I know they like a light, humus-rich soil, which is moisture retentive in the summer, but whether I grow them in a special bed or pots I never see them. While my neighbour has lots, I can only imagine pigeons and mice are eating mine. However, this is quite a common problem when growing snowdrops from bulbs – snowdrop bulbs are very small, and tend to dry out easily. It is advisable to buy them ‘in the green’, that is, potted on in spring. There are several types of snowdrop, the doubles are most impressive, such as Galanthus ‘Cordelia’, which has a lovely ruffled petticoat of green and white. If you are planting to naturalise, or for insects, single varieties are preferable, such as Galanthus ‘S. Arnott’, which has a beautiful scent, ‘Jade’, which has a flush of green on the outer petals or ‘Abbington Green’, which is a strong variety.

The system has been designed to work will all official COVID-19 test types. Health Passport Ireland is launching with a trial involving a select range of national participants including Tallaght University Hospital, Oaklodge Nursing Home, Emerald Freight, Keogh’s Farm, Home Music Festival, a county Meath based crèche and more. The platform has been developed to help the Irish economy by helping businesses to remain open through continuous proactive testing, identifying positive results at the earliest stage whilst simultaneously protecting communities by offering increased testing. “In the past week alone, unfortunately we’ve seen continued frustration and

disappointment as restrictions have again been tightened due to continued spread of COVID-19,” said Robert Quirke, President and CEO of ROQU Group, at the launch. “Health Passport Ireland is designed to put a safety net in place where none currently exists, allowing our economy to recover and thrive in a more safely controlled environment. It is a worldfirst innovation, proudly engineered in Ireland to the highest standards, that will enable business and society to finally move forward. The game changer has finally arrived.” Health Passport Ireland has been developed specifically to work in harmony with all official COVID-19 tests,
including HSE tests, laboratory swab and blood tests, and the very latest rapid testing solutions soon to be launched. “The purpose of the pilot trial is to demonstrate how Health Passport Ireland works across a variety of real-life business and social scenarios,” he added. ROQU Group has announced that, in addition to Ireland, the Health Passport platform will be launched in the US, UK, Italy, Kenya and Germany, with other locations to follow. Health Passport Ireland has been developed as part of ROQU’s international altruistic mission.
Hidden in a drawer in an alcove near the fireplace were receipts, papers and a Bible which had survived a fire at the Cross Foxes Inn at Trawsfynydd in Gwynedd more than 50 years ago. Chris Wainwright, the new owner of the pub, said the discovery was like finding a time capsule. "It's unbelievable that these documents have survived all these years and the water damage at the time of the fire," he said. One of the receipts was from a David Morris & Sons of the Comrades Bazaar for newspapers and magazines ordered by Theophilus Hignett, a guest at the Cross Foxes. Other items found in the drawer included a pamphlet containing a memorial poem to Trawsfynydd war hero Ellis Humphrey Evans (Hedd Wyn) at the annual village Eisteddfod held in August 1921.
Trump’s nonsensical answer to fair questions “But do I think, I think it would be, I think it would be, I think it would be very, very, I think we’d have a very, very solid, we would continue what we’re doing, we’d solidify what we’ve done, and we have other things on our plate that we want to get done”. These are the words spoken by Donald Trump, the President of the United States of America, when asked by a journalist what would he do for the country if re-elected.
Trump launched his re-election campaign with a series of rallies in Charlotte, North Carolina, Washington D.C. and online over the last week. During a press conference following one he gave the above response to a journalist. It is clear evidence that he cannot deal with off-script questioning. His opening speech contained all the usual Trump mechanics – an attack on election rival Joe Biden, a
boast about his Mexican wall, basically 'Making America Great Again' - again. Those speeches were written by a White House lackey and carefully crafted to ensure a favourable response. But problems occur when Trump is forced to go off-script and is asked something that he cannot answer including the fair question – "what are you going to do for America if re-elected".

The humble postcard is a hero again!
HAVE A BREAK: Bonnie Ryan joined Londis and Nestlé Ireland to announce that all proceeds from KitKat four finger chocolate bars sold in Londis stores nationwide from September 3 to 6 will be donated to Pieta.
Need a break – have KitKat and help Pieta Proceeds from every KitKat bar sold in a Londis shop on Friday and Saturday this weekend will be donated to Pieta. Pieta works to support people and communities in crisis by providing free counselling and assistance to those who are at risk of suicide, engaging in self-harm and those bereaved by suicide. Pieta operates a network of 19 centres across the country including outreach services, employing over 200 therapists and admin staff. All funds raised will aid other services, such as the 24/7 Helpline, which has seen an increase in calls since COVID-19.
Pieta has joined forces with the Londis supermarket chain and Nestlé Ireland, distributor of the chocolate bar in this country, for this fundraising effort. “I want to thank Londis and Nestlé Ireland for coming together and supporting Pieta through this initiative. In so doing, they are signalling the value and necessity of suicide prevention – a strong gesture of solidarity for all those silently suffering. We know the services of Pieta are now needed more than ever in these times of crisis, and it is important that people know that we are here and they are not alone,” Rachel Murphy, Fundraising Director at Pieta, said.

The humble postcard had become an endangered commodity. For the longest time ‘Selfies’ and social media took over from buying and mailing the scenic “wish you were here” sentiment. But the humble postcard became a hero again in recent times when the simple act of a writing and sending a personal note became a powerful link to connect people and communities who had to remain apart. A small Irish fledgling business has found a way to marry the powerful smartphone and the humble postcard with its clever PostASelfie App. "We came up with the idea of a simple-to-use App which combines the magic of a personal photograph with the enduring delight that people get when they receive a postcard from a friend, loved one or neighbour," said Adrian McCusker, Founder of PostASelfie. "It is so nice to be able to facilitate the process of sending someone something personal in the post and bringing a smile. Particularly if they are feeling lonely or isolated. I can see our postcards capturing a moment in time during this pandemic. I feel that these strange times are making people more
thoughtful and kind." Just 25 years ago more than 20 million postcards were sold each year, but now the number has dipped down to just five or six million. A study revealed that just 16 percent of people now send postcards while on a foreign holiday - compared to 80 percent in the 1970s. Around 36 percent of people said they opted not to send postcards because it was too difficult to find stamps or post boxes while overseas. However, PostASelfie eliminates the posting issues involved as this is now done with just a tap or a click! The PostASelfie App was developed on the Microsoft Azure platform and is available free to download from Google Play or the Apple App store. It allows users to easily create and share cherished moments, with just a few clicks, straight from their phone in a process lasting just a few seconds. It uses the Stripe secure payment system and for just €3.99 a person can transform a photo from their phone into a personalised postcard which is mailed off anywhere in the world with a real Irish postage stamp.
€590,000 funding for Institute of Technology Tralee Some €590,000 has been allocated for capital works and equipment for Institute of Technology Tralee, Deputy Government Chief Whip, Brendan Griffin TD has said. Deputy Griffin said the funding will allow institutions address small-scale capital investment and equipment needs based on their own priorities, including health and safety works, infrastructure upgrades, ICT and equipment renewal, and energy-related upgrades. “This funding provided by my Fine Gael
colleague, Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris, represents a significant increase in the devolved capital grant for the higher education sector and the extension of the grant to universities for the first time in nearly a decade," Deputy Griffin said. “Institute of Technology Tralee plays a hugely important role in the fabric of our community here in Kerry. “It is essential that IT Tralee can reinvest in their existing estate, renew and update their equipment, and can make capital
investments to respond to developments in online and blended learning. Ongoing capital investment is essential to ensuring a high-quality academic environment and a positive campus experience for students and staff." This flexible funding complements other targeted capital investments in the sector that will help expand availability of student places and transform campus infrastructure over the coming years, he added. “It also comes at an important time as the
sector begins to prepare for the return of students next month." The announcement is in addition to the €168 million package of COVID-19-related supports for further and higher education institutions announced in July. The grant will be allocated to individual institutions in accordance with a model based primarily on student numbers, weighted by course type and mode of student.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

Beauty breakouts and the mask As it’s mandatory to wear a mask/face covering inside shops there's been an influx of blemishes around the mouth area - which has been dubbed 'Maskne' - acne resulting from wearing masks.
It’s often caused from the material rubbing off the skin for several hours, which may cause dermatitis and this is what leads to breakouts. Not to worry, there is loads we can do to care for your skin while staying safe under a mask. A glycolic peel with ozone steamer is extremely deep cleansing and keeps the skin free from excess sebum from the basal layers of skin, preventing future blemishes coming through. It is a 45 minute facial highly beneficial for all skin types which helps eliminate fine lines and dryness also. Wear lip balm. Trapped heat, humidity from mouth breathing and friction from the mask, can irritate skin and delicate lips. It’s tricky to reapply lip balm frequently under the mask and you may be less inclined to keep up drinking water.
This may result in drier lips and over all skin. For maximum hydration and nourishment look for lanolin based lip balm. Use antioxidants as there is an increase in moisture for your breath under the mask. This may cause increased bacteria on the skin which could increase the risk of breakouts. Serums or cream rich in antioxidants helps to reduce inflammation and moisture in the skin. Sothys detox energy line and youth serums and cream are high in antioxidants and depolluting essence. The energy rebalancing cream protects the skin against daily aggression. Sothys purifying two clay mask, a gentle mask with two types of clay to leave the skin pure and matte, reduces the appearance of imperfections and stops them before they breakout. Green clay absorbs excess sebum and is purifying. Salicyic acid gently exfoliates and improves the skin's quality. White clay is softening and purifying. Use twice a week on t-zone and anywhere covered by a mask to prevent breakouts and glowing skin. Only €36.

Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie
What should an exercise programme do for me? Before joining Activate, people often ask “what can your programme do for me?” It's a valid question I suppose as you want to know what you’re getting into before you commit, and maybe you don’t know what else to ask. It’s also fun to answer, because I usually respond with more questions of my own! First of all, what are you wanting to do? Lose weight, get stronger, have more energy, look better? Second, why do you want to do that? Is it because your boyfriend said something about the way you look, all of your guy friends take their shirts off at the beach and you don’t, or you’re having trouble keeping up with your kids at the playground? Third, how does this make you feel? Embarrassed, unworthy, old? Guess, what, our “programme” can help you with all of those things and none of them at the same time. I realise it can be annoying to ask a question only to be bombarded by more questions. But the answers are important because they dictate how to proceed in a thoughtful manner. The truth is, it’s generally not about the programme at all. It’s about you and your relationship with the training/ coaching. It’s about how you hold yourself accountable or are held accountable to your goals. Sure, there are tried and true methods to losing weight, building muscle, and increasing your cardiovascular endurance. We use those! What our programme will do is show you exactly where you are right now, and
it's your birthday that’s every day you walk in the door! If you’ve been coming to the gym three times per week for the last six weeks, it will show you confidence in your movement (in and out of the gym) and increased effort in your workouts. If you’ve been improving habits, meal prepping and dialling in your calorie intake (and or macros), it will show you how improved body composition can help make your workouts feel effortless. If you’ve been focusing on your mental game and your inner dialogue, it will show you empathy and compassion for your efforts and those of your fellow athletes and increased mental fortitude with everyday stressors. It’s a mirror reflecting back to you exactly what you put into it. Sure, we offer a great programme centred around evidence based practice, scientific principles of training performed under the watchful eye of a professional coach and designed to increase strength, speed, agility, cardiovascular/ respiratory endurance, etc., but really what we offer is guidance through experience and coaching and it’s up to you to take action!

SEAT and Aherns celebrate one year collaboration Ahern’s Garage in Castleisland is this week celebrating one year as Kerry’s SEAT dealer firm. The family run business on the Tralee road is steeped in motor industry history in the county and last year the Ahern family added the Spanish brand to its growing portfolio that also includes the Opel, Mazda and BMW franchises for the county. SEAT is part of the Volkswagen Group and the best seller, locally, was the Arona SUV model. “It has been excellent, we are very happy with the addition of SEAT,” dealer
principal Pat Ahern told the Killarney Advertiser. “SEAT has a broad spectrum of models and this has led to new customers who have not dealt with us in the past. There is great confidence in the brand as it is under the Volkswagen flag. I want to say a big thanks to all our customers for their support this year." Kerry and East Kerry football star David Clifford acts as brand ambassador for Ahern’s Garage and he attended the weekend’s birthday celebration in Ahern’s SEAT showroom.

Imp road run could lead to bigger events in the future
ROAD RUN: James and Sheila Looney at Kilgarvan Motor Museum on Saturday with their 1966 Hillman Imp. Photo: Sean Moriarty
Local organisers of last weekend’s Imp Club In Ireland tour of Kerry hope the run laid the foundation for an even bigger event in the future. The club are dedicated to the preserva-
tion and restoration of Imps and Stilettos manufactured by the Roote’s Group of companies like Hillman, Sunbeam and Chrysler. Every year the club organises one road run in Ireland and this was the first time
that Kerry was chosen for the two-day drive. Local car enthusiast, James Looney, who is a member of both Imp Club in Ireland and the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club, organised the local run at the
weekend. “The club goes somewhere different every year and I put my shout in for Killarney this year,” he said. Members arrived in Killarney on Friday night and spent Saturday touring West Cork and Kenmare including a visit to St Finabarr’s Church in Gougane Barra and the Kilgarvan Motor Museum. On Sunday, they toured West Kerry and covered famous rally stages like Slea Head and Conor Pass. The run finished with a visit to the Charles Rolls Monument at the Ballyfinnane Hillclimb. While round 15 different versions of the car took part in the weekend run there was a drop in usual numbers due to travel concerns connected with the pandemic, but organisers deemed the run a success. “Every four years all the international clubs come together for a big rally, last year it was held on Doolin, County Clare,” added James. “I will be putting my shout in again for Killarney to host the 2023 rally.”

Threshold’s Kerry outreach supported over 300 households in first year National housing charity Threshold has revealed that it has supported 319 households in the private rented sector since the opening of its dedicated outreach service in Kerry just one year ago. The charity urged renters in Kerry to contact its housing advisors for advice and support. Of the most common issues raised by tenants in Kerry over the last year, notices of termination dominated at almost a third (32%), followed by rent increases, Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) and issues in relation to
standards and repairs. “The figures revealed highlight what we knew already, that issues in the private rented sector are not confined to Ireland’s large cities, but occur in every part of the country," Edel Conlon, Southern Regional Services Manager, Threshold said. "Nearly a quarter of clients in Kerry over the last 12 months required more than one consultation; 64% of the notices of termination seen by our advisors were ultimately deemed to be invalid; and there were five cases which involved the landlord

refusing to accept HAP. The patterns that first emerged in more pressurised areas like Dublin and Cork have begun to repeat themselves across the country. Therefore, Threshold’s presence on the ground is vital in counties such as Kerry whose private rented sectors are growing at speed." She added that despite the fact that they are unable to interact face-to-face with their clients in Kerry at the moment, they remain acutely aware of the issues that families and individuals are
facing and the complex nature of these problems.
"We are still assisting tenants on a remote basis for now.” Threshold’s helpline remains available Monday to Friday, 9am to 9pm at 1800 454 454, and via its website at threshold.ie/advice/help for any renter in need of advice or support.

Cllr Michael Gleeson to Killarney Municipal District meetings under the Climate Change Adaptation Scheme the Government has allocated €30,000 for remedial work on the L7050 local road at Gotahoosh, Glenflesk. This money will be used to alter the road level to mitigate flooding and reduce road closure frequency. “This refers to the former Cork Road, the east of the bridge. The work is of immediate importance as the road is subject to regular flooding which seriously inconveniences local road users. I have asked the Council to endeavour to undertake this work prior to the onset of winter weather,” Mr Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser.

The wait is almost over for the
Class of 2020 What a year, what an end and what a class group! As Leaving Certs you have weathered the storm created by COVID-19 with a collective strength of character that has earned you the respect of your teachers, parents and so many others besides. For so many of you the disappointment of not being able to celebrate the traditional milestones in your final year in secondary school still lingers; that’s completely understandable. You have been exceptionally patient considering that your results are being issued almost four weeks later than every other year, but thankfully the wait is almost over. On Monday next at 9am, the results of your calculated grades will be available online via your Student Portal on https:// lc2020.education.gov.ie/. As this is a big milestone in your life in a year that has denied you many more of them it would be a good idea to have someone with you when you get them to share in the experience of it with you. You will need your exam number, student portal password
and PPS number to access the results. Your points will not be listed on the certificate that you get so you will need to calculate them yourself. It’s a good idea to download the Points Calculator App from Careers Portal to your phone beforehand. It is very simple to use and does the calculating for you. You then have another wait for CAO Round 1 offers which will be available online at 2pm on Friday September 11. You won’t know the points for 2020 until the Round 1 offers are issued. On Monday (September 14), the estimated mark given by the school will be available online via the Student Portal. Students will be able to appeal results from September 14-17, and details of the process will be published on the Student Portal. Available Places will also open on September 14 on www.cao.ie. You will have up to Wednesday September 16 at 3pm to accept your Round 1 offer online. Second round offers will be made on September 23 for acceptance by September 25. For the most up-to-date information on dates and details always check www. cao.ie and https://lc2020.education. gov.ie/.
WRITTEN EXAM Students who are disappointed with their results will have the opportunity to sit the written Leaving Certificate Exams in November. You may choose to sit some or all of the exams and you will be able to use the highest grade that you receive from either the exam or the calculated grade to apply to CAO for entry to college in 2021/2022. The exams are due to begin on Monday, November 16 on evenings and weekends, subject to public health guidelines at that time. Details such as timetables, registration and procedures will be issued closer to the time. Schools have been asked to ensure that Guidance Counsellors are available to students on the day of the results so if you have questions contact your school by phone or email. The National Parents’ Council Post-Primary in conjunction with the IGC will provide a Freephone helpline on 1800 265 165 on September 7 and 8 from 11am to 8pm, on September 9 and 10 from 11am to 2pm, September 11 from 12pm-8pm and September 12 from 11am to 5pm.
Leaving Certificate
results out this coming Monday | By Michelle Crean Monday is the big day for this year's Leaving Cert students who have had a rollercoaster few months which saw the traditional sit down exams cancelled for the first time in 95 years. Thousands are unsure what to expect on Monday with this year's results being released as Calculated Grades. For Phobail Sliabh Luachra Leaving Cert student Gemma Cremin, who is planning a career as a Home Economics and Religion teacher, she says she's not nervous at all. However, this week she told the Killarney Advertiser that she's relieved the wait is almost finally over as she'll be logging into the Students Portal at 9am on Monday morning with her mom Elma by her side. She explained that it's disappointing that many of the traditional milestones
students experience such as sitting the exams and collecting the results in school together are being missed this year due to the global health pandemic. "It's a big change not going in," Gemma said. "We're missing an awful lot this year from sitting the exams to the debs, graduation and collecting our results." She says sitting the traditional exams students still would have no idea what their results would be but this year is just different. "Even if you do sit your exams you don't know the results but it's harder this year. I'm not too nervous. I'm hoping to do Home Economics and Religion teaching which is approximately 460 points. However, with the calculated results a lot of students' results could turn out a lot better and then you're competing with them for a college place."
RESULTS: Leaving Cert student Gemma Cremin says she's relieved that the results will be out this coming Monday.
Niamh Dwyer is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore, and PRO of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. She is also a Career Consultant. For details see

New mental health manual to support return to school | By Michelle Crean
The ISSU has launched a back-to-school mental health resource 'How’s Your Head', to help students to get back on track mentally on their return to school. The initiative, led by ISSU Donegal Regional Officer India Kennedy and supported by the National Student Executive, has also been supported by the Ombudsman for Children’s Office and ETB National Parents’ Association. The ISSU had campaigned for increased support for students on the return to school, in collaboration with the Institute of Guidance Counselors (IGC), UNICEF Ireland and the National Parents’ Council Post-Primary (NPCPP). ISSU welcomed the announcement of increased guidance counsellor hours for the upcoming academic year, and this resource aims to enable students to help themselves and their peers during this transition time. ISSU President Reuban Murray said. "We wish to thank all partners for contributing to this resource and collaborating with the ISSU on this important topic." A physical copy of the manual will be shared with ETB and ISSU member schools, while the full resource is available at issu.ie/mental-health-manual.

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES
Kerry GAA’s live streaming service has great potential but viewers’ concerns cannot be overlooked, writes Adam Moynihan
With sport being played behind closed doors in line with COVID-19 restrictions, it’s great that supporters have been able to watch Club and County Championship action online via Kerry GAA’s live streams. The ability to view games after the fact is an added bonus and the commentary team of Gary O’Sullivan and Seán O’Sullivan have done terrific work on the microphones. That’s the ‘good’. Now here comes the ‘bad’.
The launch of Kerry GAA’s new ‘day’ and ‘weekend’ live stream passes led to confusion and, in some instances, anger last Friday night when it turned out that no discount would be applied for buying matches in bundles. The streams normally cost €5. Fans could now buy a day pass, covering two quarter-finals, for €10, or a weekend pass, covering all four quarter-finals, for €20. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser on Saturday morning, PRO Leona Twiss
explained that the aim of the passes was to allow supporters to input their card details once as opposed to multiple times over the course of the weekend. It was, she said, never marketed as a discount. I have purchased a number of games myself – ones that I have been unable to attend or ones that I wanted to watch back – and I must say that, personally, I didn’t find the process that inconvenient to begin with. When you’re using your own device, your card de-
tails are likely to autocomplete and it takes a matter of seconds to make the transaction. But, having said that, I had noticed one or two complaints online, so it’s fair enough that Kerry GAA addressed the issue. I think the entire controversy could have been avoided quite easily by simply not calling it a “pass”. It was only natural that supporters would expect to pay less for a weekend pass than they would if they bought four matches individually. Kerry GAA could have just
SPORT
4.9.2020 stated that they had set it up so that if you want to buy all the streams in one go, you can. There would have been no qualms with that.
VALUE FOR MONEY
When I spoke to her, Twiss reiterated a point that has been made numerous times by the county board over the past month or so: €5 per game is “extremely good value for money”. I’m not so sure I’d go that far. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fine. I have no problem whatsoever with giving the county board €5 to watch a match online. From speaking to supporters, it seems as though no one has any real issues with the €5 price tag. I think we’re all grateful that the option is even there. But Kerry GAA seem to be calling the streams great value for money because they cost less than a match ticket, which is surely a false equivalence. Yes, you would be paying twice or three times as much to go to matches if the gates were open, but the experience of attending a live game is not the same as watching it at home on your computer screen. You’d pay €100 to watch the All-Ireland final from the Hogan Stand. Does that mean you’d happily pay €100 to watch it from your armchair? Or €50? Or even €5? Many local football supporters will have spent more money streaming the Kerry Senior Club and County Championships in the past month than they have on their Sky Sports package, which has 15+ channels with round the clock coverage of all the major sports in the world. Yes, some counties have been charging €10 per game, so we are getting good value relative to them, but on the other hand our neighbours in Cork are streaming all of their matches for free. Again, I have no issue with paying the €5. I’ll gladly support Kerry GAA and I’m delighted that the service exists. But I don’t know if I appreciate being told that it’s good value when the money I’ve spent on live streams would cover my Netflix subscription for the rest of the year.
DOUBLED
Whatever about having to pay a fiver for one stream, which, as I said, most people are okay with, that figure technically doubled last weekend as the option to purchase a single game was removed. Only day and weekend passes were available, which meant that if even if you only wanted to watch the East Kerry v St Kieran’s game, for example, you had to also pay for the Legion v St Brendan’s match which took place the same day. And what’s worse, if you only wanted the East Kerry game on Saturday and the Dr Crokes game on Sunday, you were left with no other option but to
buy the weekend pass, so you ended up paying €20 instead of €10. The Kerry GAA PRO said that matches were paired as double-headers as that’s how tickets would have been sold under normal circumstances, and the county board had paid for two streaming blocks (one on each day) as opposed to four. I understand that tickets to individual games cannot be sold for double-headers in real life – it would be a logistical nightmare – but the option should be there online. If you logged on to watch Mid Kerry v Kenmare Shamrocks on Sunday, for instance, you also had to pay for Dr Crokes v Templenoe, which was already over. This, to my mind, does not constitute value for money.
COMPLAINTS
All of this cribbing about cost and value and weekend passes would probably have faded into the background if the streams themselves actually worked but, unfortunately for Kerry GAA, they didn’t. Users complained of multiple breaks in coverage during the Crokes game and Kerry GAA took to Twitter to apologise. “We are experiencing technical difficulties with the stream,” they said. Four minutes were lost, prompting some supporters to ask for a refund. Things went from bad to worse in the 4pm fixture as the stream cut out in second-half stoppage time, just as Kenmare were probing for a championship-saving equaliser. It literally could not have happened at a more inopportune moment. The final whistle was blown during the outage and viewers were left bewildered and, above all else, disappointed by what had happened. One fan tweeted: “The coverage itself is very good but the interruptions are too frequent. Not fair to charge people €10 or €20 for that.” Another called for “money back or free coverage of semi-finals for those affected”. Speaking on Radio Kerry’s Terrace Talk on Monday, chairman Tim Murphy acknowledged the problems but said the county board were “very happy” with how their live streaming project has gone so far. “As a whole it has gone extremely well,” he said. “It was a national issue [on Sunday]. There was a network failure in a European data centre. It was an issue not of our own making. It just happened to go as the match was in the melting pot so I understand people’s frustration, but it was completely out of our control. “[Streaming matches] has gone exceptionally well. We have one of the highest viewerships in the country.” One would imagine that if they are getting such large viewing figures that some sort of profit is being made but the county PRO said they are “barely covering costs”. I see no reason why
these figures can’t be shared publicly; the Westmeath chairman told the Irish Examiner last week exactly how many viewers they’re getting and how much it’s costing them to stream. Westmeath are turning a profit. Should Kerry GAA not be able to do likewise? And whatever about anything else, the fact that season ticket holders are being charged for the streams is completely unfair in my opinion – these people have already paid to attend these matches up front. I have been told that the matter will be discussed at a finance committee meeting this week but giving access to these loyal followers at no additional cost should have been automatic. They shouldn’t have to go cap in hand asking for it.
LEARNING
55
Look, it’s a new system so we absolutely should cut the county board some slack. They are learning every week and by and large the service has been a good one. I’m sure there has been a great deal of work in setting it all up and, at the end of the day, whatever money comes in is for the benefit of Kerry GAA. But they also have to take stock of what supporters are telling them. The vast majority of viewers have serious concerns about the quality of the streams, and therefore they have every right to question whether or not they’re getting value for money. The whole thing is buffering at the moment but the potential is there for it to be a very useful (and very profitable) service for many years to come.

WE MEET AGAIN | By Adam Moynihan
The draw has been made for the semi-finals of the Kerry Senior Football Championship and for the second year in a row, East Kerry will need to go through St Brendan’s if they want to reach the county final. The defending champions defeated their counterparts from the north 12 months ago but Brendan’s have improved since then, and with star man David Clifford unlikely to be available for selection next Friday night, the men from the East will certainly have their work cut out for them. It promises to be an exciting contest with
• x
the winners taking on either Dr Crokes or a resurgent Mid Kerry side in the decider. It was predicted to be a one-horse race but, all of a sudden, the championship is heating up.
APPEAL
There’s no such thing as a “good” time to lose David Clifford to a straight red card but the 66th minute of a quarter-final that was virtually already won has to be right up there with the very worst. East Kerry led by two points and were on the attack when Clifford appeared to become involved in an entanglement
which left his marker, Castleisland Desmonds clubman Brian Leonard, on the ground. Referee Jonathan Griffin had no doubts about what had happened. He sent the Kerry captain off, indicating that there had been a strike with the leg. This infringement carries an automatic one-match suspension and although it is believed that East Kerry have appealed the decision, popular consensus is that the video evidence does not exonerate Clifford. Interestingly, Clifford is the third Kerry forward to have been sent off by this referee in a short period of time. James
O’Donoghue, Micheál Burns and now the Fossa man have all been given their marching orders by Griffin in either the Club or County Championship, and all three incidents involved striking. After reviewing the evidence, the county board rejected O’Donoghue’s appeal but upheld Burns’.
Unfortunately for East Kerry, it is widely expected that their attempt to quash Clifford’s suspension will be in vain.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK St Brendan’s star Diarmuid O’Connor is quietly developing into an elite level midfielder and his performance against Legion was nothing short of sublime. Operating alongside his Na Gaeil and intercounty teammate Jack Barry to great effect, O’Connor dictated proceedings and finished with personal tally of 1-3 from play. A real handful for any opponent on his day. Unfortunately for Legion, his day came last Saturday.

East Kerry beat Kieran’s to set up Brendan’s rematch Clifford expected to miss semi after straight red card
TEST
The Clifford incident aside, it was a great win for East Kerry over Kieran’s. They were really tested on the day by a very promising outfit and the arduous nature of the game should stand them in good stead heading into the last four. A superb solo goal by the outstanding Paudie Clifford lit up the first half but St Kieran’s gave as good as they got with Scartaglen sharpshooter Eddie Horan to the fore. Shane Ryan did well to stop Paul Walsh’s penalty not long after the break but when midfielder James Walsh fired home a three-pointer midway through the second half, Kieran’s led by three and the pre-tournament favourites were very much on the ropes. A goal and a point by their talisman, David Clifford, settled the jitters, however, and despite losing him late on, East Kerry held on for the win. It was a stern test but Jerry O’Sullivan’s side passed it. Now, an even bigger one awaits.
DÉJÀ VU
History repeated itself in Stack Park last Saturday evening when, just as they did in 2019, St Brendan’s dumped the Killarney Legion out of the championship at the quarter-final stage. With Diarmuid O’Connor and Jack Barry on top form in midfield (both scored goals with O’Connor also adding three points from play), Brendan’s never really looked like losing and they ultimately cruised to a comprehensive 11-point victory. It was a disappointing end to the campaign for Legion, who will now focus on

defending their East Kerry Championship. For Brendan’s, it’s case of déjà vu all over again as they prepare to tackle East Kerry in the last four. It’s a tall order but they will take comfort in knowing that they were the last team to beat the holders: they sent East Kerry through the back door when they prevailed in Round 1 of last year’s championship.
GOLDEN BOOT
Dr Crokes booked their spot in the semi-final by beating fellow club side Templenoe in Killarney. Tony Brosnan is well on his way to the Golden Boot after posting another imposing score; he kicked eight points with four coming from play, two from marks and two from
KERRY SFC QUARTER-FINAL RESULTS
frees (one of which he won himself). At the other end Killian Spillane kept Fionn Fitzgerald busy but his tally of 0-6 (two frees) was not enough to keep Templenoe in the hunt. Four points by Micheál Burns and a goal from half-time substitute Gavin White propelled the Crokes to an eight-point win and they are now the last club standing in this year’s championship. After two duels with club sides, they will need to account for two divisional outfits if they are to regain the crown they last wore in 2018.
MID KERRY
Kenmare Shamrocks have become known for their late-game heroics but their luck ran out on Sunday as Mid Kerry
just about hung on for a one-point win. Paul O’Connor continued his recent run of fine form and his personal total of 1-5 helped Shamrocks to build a three-point half-time lead. That gap widened to five early in the second but the introduction of Jack O’Connor from Beaufort precipitated a Mid Kerry fightback. O’Connor was fouled for a penalty which the excellent Gavan O’Grady converted and when he pointed himself not long after, the divisional side led by one. Fiachra Clifford and Liam Carey pushed that lead out to three by the 56th minute but Kenmare never gave up and scores by Michael McCarthy and Mark Crowley left the game in the balance in time added on. Paul O’Connor had a chance to equalise but it appeared as though his shot (and I’m open to correction on this) was halfblocked by the diving Gavan O’Grady and Mid Kerry keeper Stephen Cahillane parried the ball to safety. Seán O’Shea, playing with a heavily strapped right quad, had one more opportunity to level matters but his shot hooked agonisingly to the left and wide and Mid Kerry prevailed with the bare minimum to spare. It was a tough loss for Kenmare but at least they have the Club Championship final to look forward to. That match against Stacks has now been fixed for next Sunday, September 13 at 3.30pm. The relegation playoff between Kilcummin and Templenoe will take place at 1.30pm the same day. Both matches are in the Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney and both will be streamed by Kerry GAA.

set for all-Killarney league final Old rivals Killarney Celtic and Killarney Athletic will fight it out for the biggest prize in Kerry soccer when they meet in the Denny Premier A Division league final on Sunday. COVID-19 restrictions meant that the 2019/20 season had to be put on ice during the summer months but, after a few busy weeks of catch-up, all top-flight matches have finally been completed. The campaign has lasted the bones of 12 months. Now all that remains is for a winner to be crowned. And, for the fourth season in a row, the champions will hail from the town of Killarney.
NEVER IN DOUBT Celtic’s spot in the league final has never been in doubt. The Hoops romped home to a first place finish on the back of a near perfect record of 12 wins, two draws and no defeats. Many of those victories came
quite easily to them and their goal difference of +47 tells its own story in this regard.

them to second position but a good run of form post-lockdown saw them sneak
Truth be told, they have been head and shoulders above the opposition when it comes to domestic competitions and they have also impressed on the national and provincial stage. Brian Spillane’s side reached the last eight of the FAI Junior Cup before losing to Fairview on penalties and they won the prestigious Munster Champions Trophy by defeating Rathkeale.
back into contention. They needed to beat Classic FC in the last game of the regular season to force a playoff against Castleisland and they just about managed it, twice coming from behind to secure a crucial 3-2 win.
Celtic are going for three-in-a-row in terms of league titles and with this year’s Greyhound Bar KO Cup and League Cup still to play for, they could well be in line for quite a large haul of silverware.
This will be the second all-Killarney final in four seasons. Athletic famously defeated Celtic after a replay in 2017 and that should auger well for The Blues, but, having said that, their current team bears little resemblance to the one that lifted the club’s first ever league trophy. A number of key players have since retired or reverted to GAA and they have, by and large, been replaced by promising youngsters, some of whom are still in second
PLAYOFF Athletic’s route to the final has been far less straightforward. It looked for long stages as though Castleisland would beat
They trailed once again in that playoff against Island last Sunday but they turned it around to win 2-1 and set up this weekend’s derby against Celtic.

ary school. In fact, only two starters from that fateful day three years ago are still involved. Manager Stuart Templeman will depend upon older heads like Shane Doolan and Shane Bunyan to lead this youthful team into their first big final at this level. Celtic, meanwhile, have added top quality players like Stevie O’Mahoney, Adam O’Rourke and the Lowth brothers to their squad in recent times and with John McDonagh, Gary Keane and Matt Keane still as commanding as ever, they will fancy their chances of coming out on top.

TRAILBLAZERS: Can you identify any of the players in this Killarney RFC team photo from 1915-16?
Who are these men?
Rugby club launch “nostalgic” history project aimed at honouring founding fathers | By Adam Moynihan Killarney RFC have launched an ambitious history project aimed at charting the club’s early years, and they’re asking for your help to reach their goal. A newly-formed History Project team, which includes Alex Willms, James Desmond, Annmarie Williams, Ger Sugrue, Ger Moynihan, Liam Murphy and Tom O'Leary, are looking for assistance as they try to identify and, ultimately, honour their past players and members going back to the very foundation of the club. Old photographs and news articles are currently being compiled and the team have already unearthed one very significant piece of information: they now believe the club may have been formed at
least three full decades earlier than was previously understood. “We thought that the club had been founded in 1928 but we have found evidence suggesting that there was an active rugby club in Killarney all the way back in 1898,” the club’s volunteer coordinator, Tom O’Leary, said. “It’s fascinating.” In fact, one article titled ‘The Revival of Killarney Rugby Football Club’ seems to signify that the sport was played in Killarney, and that there was an organised club, at some unknown stage before that. “Because we haven’t had a home of our own until relatively recently, we’ve had nowhere to keep these old pictures and memorabilia,” Tom explained. “Now that we have our clubhouse in Aghadoe, we
thought that it’d be nice to acknowledge the people who helped establish rugby in Killarney by displaying their photographs and by telling their stories.
We feel as though it will encourage and inspire our current members, especially the younger generations. It will show them that they’re part of something special. The club are actively seeking photos, news articles, nuggets of information and anecdotes – anything at all that will help them gain an insight into the history of Killarney RFC. The photograph on this very page is a prime example. They have the faces but they would love the find the names to go

Rás na mBan cancelled After months of deliberation the organising committee of Rás na mBan have been forced to cancel this year’s race and have now switched their attention to preparations for the 2021 event Ireland’s top international stage race for women was originally due to be held in Kilkenny this week. The race was postponed in mid-July and the organisers had hoped that travel restrictions caused by the global pandemic would ease in time to run the race in October. However, continued uncertainty around international travel and a fast-approaching end to the truncated racing season mean that months of planning for this
year’s race will now be to the benefit of Rás na mBan 2021. Plans are already well advanced for next year’s race which will take place in early September 2021 from a base in Kilkenny. Stage routes for the five-day event have already been mapped and will be announced in due course. “It has been a difficult time for all involved but we’ve been mindful of the need to do the right thing for the race, for the competitors, for the volunteers and for other supporters who attend the event,” Race Director Valerie Considine said. “To the international and local riders who had been hoping to race this year, we apologise. And we sincerely hope to see you all in Kilkenny in 12 months’ time."
“It wouldn't be possible without the support of Brian O’Shea of Brian James who has been with us since the very start. The prizes are top class and we’re very grateful for his continued support.”

Nagle and his driver Craig Breen will make their first start on a WRC event since February’s Rally Sweden. Michael Fassbender failed to make the start of the Four Hours of Le Castellet Endurance Race in France on Saturday after a high-speed crash during the morning practice session. The Fossa man got caught out on wet-kerbing just minutes into the session. His Porsche 911 RSR was catapulted into the track’s protection bar-
riers. He walked out of the wreckage uninjured but the car was too badly damaged and his Proton Dempsey Racing Team were unable to repair the car in time for Saturday night’s race. It should have marked his first race under the cover of darkness as he continues his preparation for the 24 Hours of Le Mans next June. | C oyne commits to British
series
Kevin Coyne will take on the biggest challenge of his career this weekend when he races at the world-famous Silverstone track in Northamptonshire. The 18-year-old Farranfore-based racer is contesting the HEL Performance British Junior Supersport Championship, the first Kerry rider to commit to the series. Riders race on 200cc to 500cc production machines and Coyne fields a self-prepared Kawasaki with help from JOG Tuning in Gortatlea. He initially planned on entering the opening two rounds of the series for 18 to 22-year-olds but has now decided to complete the season. As well as this weekend’s Silverstone event he will also race at Oulton Park (September 19-20); make a return to Donington Park (October 2-4, the venue for his UK debut in July) and Brands Hatch (October 16-18).

U14 GIRLS: Our U14 girls got back to winning ways on Sunday with a fine victory against John Mitchels. The Legion girls were quicker out of the blocks and had a lot of possession but some poor finishing in the first 15 mins meant Mitchels were always in the game. The girls settled better after the water break and the scores started to flow. We dominated for the rest of match with some fine defending, some great passing moves which led to fine scores. To their credit Mitchels kept going to the very end. Up next is a trip to Laune Rangers on Sunday at 4pm. Well done girls. JUVENILE ACADEMY: The Juvenile Academy continues every Saturday morning. SENIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: East Kerry’s dreams of a second County Championship win in a row are still alive after just about getting past St Kieran’s in Tralee this evening. Glenflesk had three players on the team this evening, and as usual, they were all influential in the victory. Chris O’Donoghue was at corner back and was crucial in the second half recovery with some brilliant passes forward that would lead to important scores. Dan O’Brien started at midfield and drove forward impressively while also doing well at catching and breaking the ball at kickouts while also dropping back to help the defense. Darragh Roche was at Full Forward and contributed four points and two assists including the crucial pass to David Clifford to bury the game clinching goal.

Muckross Rowing Club BANTRY OFFSHORE REGATTA: This Saturday, September 5, Bantry Rowing Club are set to have the honour of running one of the very few competitive rowing events for 2020. The club is hosting an offshore regatta and the event will operate from a unique venue. To facilitate social distancing, the large Bantry Aerodrome facility adjacent to the coast will play host to the 20 competing clubs. No spectators are allowed and entries have been limited with COVID-19 safety protocols in place. Muckross RC is sending one Masters Men crew, the members of which will compete in the Mens Quad race. We wish the lads the best of luck as our new offshore quad makes its competitive debut. END OF SEASON: With the main rowing season complete, club activities are now greatly reduced which will provide members with a break before the new season 2020/21 gets underway from the end of September. What exact format the new rowing year will take is highly uncertain as COVID-19 continues to dictate the course of daily life. However, as we have done this summer, we will continue to provide opportunities to row insofar as possible, in compliance with the public health restrictions and relevant protocols. For those looking to try out rowing as beginners, watch this space over the weeks ahead for details of our new season kick-off.
