Tributes to Radio Kerry’s man in Killarney Tributes have been pouring in for legendary Radio Kerry broadcaster Sean Hurley (70) who passed away suddenly on Tuesday.

RADIO LIFE: Sean Hurley listening to Radio Kerry colleague Eamonn Hickson interview Micheal O'Mhuirteaigh on his 90th birthday less than a month ago

Dermot said. “His dedication was unreal.” Dermot said he was devastated to learn of the news just before he went on air Tuesday night. “Radio was his life and his life was radio,” Dermot told the Killarney Advertiser. “I went to work on Tuesday night, I sat in the chair and Sean was the last man to sit in it. I unplugged his headset and plugged in my own, all his notes from Sunday night were on the desk - he left Sunday with the full intention of coming back to work.” Politician Michael Healy-Rae was a personal friend of Sean’s. “He had such a friendly way about him, he is what you call genuine,” the Kilgarvan TD told the Killarney Advertiser. “I extend my sympathies to his family, his Radio Kerry family and his

Kerry family, because each and every one of us owned a piece of Sean.” He was also an accomplished musician and played in several two-piece bands on the pub scene in Killarney. Sean was the winner of a PPI Radio Award for his work, and has been nominated on numerous occasions for other awards including on Monday of this week when he was shortlisted for this year’s IMRO Radio Awards for his ‘Kerrywide’ programme. “Sean was a much loved colleague and friend to everyone in Radio Kerry,” a Radio Kerry statement said. “The Board of Radio Kerry and all staff wish to extend their sympathies to all his family at this time. His contribution to Radio Kerry and communities throughout Kerry is immeasurable.”

No further COVID cases at Killarney school | By Michelle Crean There have been no further cases of COVID-19 at a Killarney school this week following the confirmation last Friday that one child had tested positive.

NO FURTHER CASES: Rory Darcy, Principal of St Oliver’s National School, says that there have been no further cases of COVID-19 in the school.

| By Sean Moriarty Mr Hurley was 'Radio Kerry’s man in Killarney’ and worked for the station since it opened in July 1990. Prior to that he worked for the pirate stations Kingdom 102 which was based in New Street and South West Radio on the Cork Road. He presented Radio Kerry’s ‘Kerrywide’, a collection of stories, songs, music and poems, from all parts of the county, every Sunday night. The Tralee native but Killarney resident walked everywhere in town and was a regular sight on the streets of Killarney. He was never off duty; his recording equipment was always in hand, and supplied breaking news to the county broadcaster as he had a canny knack of being in the right place at the right time. His dedication to Radio Kerry went beyond broadcasting and was known to arrive to work in the early hours of the morning preparing studios for the arrival of special guests. Sean and his colleague Dermot Moriarty shared Radio Kerry’s Killarney studio. “It would be fair to call him the manager and caretaker of the Killarney studio even if that was not an official title,”

Rory Darcy, Principal of St Oliver’s National School in Ballycasheen, told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday) that only one case was confirmed and they followed all the

necessary Public Health advice. All parents were immediately informed when the school became aware of the positive case. The child in question wasn’t in school for a number of days so the risk to the school community was very minimal and no classes were sent home as they weren’t considered close contacts. “There have been no further cases,” Mr Darcy told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is just one case and the last thing we want to do is sensationalise it. We

Killarney traders are growing concerned at the increasing number of homeless people sleeping rough in the town centre. They say there is a growing number of “professional” rough sleepers after appearing in the town centre in recent weeks and traders say these people “are following the crowds” as a result of a lack of footfall in larger cities and the increased demand for staycation style holidays. The traders feel Killarney’s good name as a tourist destination is at risk unless something is done about it. Local business sources have told the Killarney Advertiser that the problem is particularly bad in the College Square area and that several people are sleeping every night in the archway that leads off Plunkett St to Glebe Lane. Cllr Donal Grady raised the issue at yesterday’s (Thursday) Killarney Municipal District meeting. “Beggars have come in,” he told the meeting. “Plunkett St is a disgrace.” Killarney Gardai said the public needs to be aware of what is legal and illegal but that they will investigate anti-social behaviour or other criminal acts. “It is not an offence to be homeless,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “Begging, in certain circumstances, is not illegal either. It is illegal near ATM machines and shopfronts, but the public need to be aware what is legal and illegal. We will investigate anti-social behaviour but homelessness is not a policing issue – it is a matter for other agencies. The numbers are very small compared to other urban centres.”

encourage people to go for testing because that breaks the cycle of the virus. It’s going to be with us for a while and the last thing we want is to discourage people from going. We need to mind each other.” He added that the school community rallied together since the news became known. “It’s been a great example of cooperation between parents, school staff and the HSE. We’re very proud of the way people have worked together.”

Grady launches legal challenge to Killarney’s Safe Streets plan | By Sean Moriarty

Killarney Chamber fully supports Safe Streets plan extension | By Michelle Crean The business community in Killarney has welcomed and fully supports the decision to extend the Safe Streets plan until January 6, 2021. The measures adopted by Kerry County Council, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, have been designed to provide a safer environment – particularly for vulnerable and older people – while at the same time supporting the reopening of local businesses. Pedestrianisation has been implemented, footpaths have been significantly widened and several no parking and age friendly zones have been introduced and that has proved particularly beneficial given that the level of footfall experienced over the past two months was significantly higher than was originally envisaged. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce said the Safe Streets plan will be even more beneficial when the visitor profile changes considerably in the coming weeks with a more mature clientele anticipated. “With pubs due to reopen on September 21, and the Christmas season rapidly approaching, the streets of Killarney will become quite busy and space is required to facilitate social distancing guidelines,” Chamber President Paul Sherry said. “We all need to band together going forward to ensure we take every necessary caution to counter the increase in COVID-19 cases reported throughout the country and we wholeheartedly and enthusiastically support Kerry County Council in its Safe Street work.” Extensive recent research commissioned by Killarney Chamber of Tour-

ism and Commerce, in association with the Institute of Technology – the results of which will be released shortly – indicates that a significant majority of people in Killarney fully support the measures contained in the Safe Streets plan. At a national level, worries have been voiced by public health officials about the spread of the virus and its potential to impact on society and business. Public health advice remains that people must maintain a two-metre social distance from others. Kerry County Council has noted that in Killarney, Christmas shopping during December has traditionally seen a relatively high level of footfall so the proposal is to keep the Safe Streets plan in place until January 6. Furthermore, given the high concentration of schools in Killarney town centre, the Council has held discussions with Bus Éireann and An Garda Síochána on Safe Streets measures that are required to manage the safe drop-off and collection of students. The current public health advice from the Department of Health, with increasing numbers of confirmed COVID cases and with more community transmission, is that the requirement to provide for safe social distancing will remain for some considerable time. “The Council considered it necessary to extend the current road closures in Killarney until next January to provide a safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists,” Mr Sherry said. “The impact of these closures, as well as the other measures put in place, are to be subject to further review and, in the meantime, Chamber fully supports the Safe Streets project.”

A Killarney councillor has issued legal proceedings against Kerry County Council and Killarney Municipal District in opposition to current street layouts in the town centre. Cllr Donal Grady believes the Council’s Safe Streets programme is illegal as the correct levels of public and political engagement were not followed. In early July the Council widened footpaths and closed Plunkett St and Kenmare Place to vehicular traffic as part of its plan to encourage social distancing in the town centre. The initial plan was to run the Safe Streets programme until September 2 but this has now been extended until January 6 as the virus remains prevalent in society. Ahead of the extension Council officials stated many reasons, including an unexpected increase in footfall in the town centre during the summer, an anticipated busy Christmas period as well as COVID-19 safety protocols. Grady believes the current street scape will remain permanent, even after the January expiry date and, has in the past, accused the Council of acting in a covert way to bring permanent pedestrianisation to the town centre without the correct public consultations. This prompted him to instruct his solicitor to take legal proceedings on the matter. Killarney Municipal District Manager Angela McAllen prepared a detailed report on the matter and presented it at yesterday's (Thursday) Council meeting. She told the meeting that a separate

meeting to discuss the current and future plans would take place in September and that elected members could attend. “This is about keeping Killarney safe,” she said. “However, as there is now a legal schedule I am not in a position to comment further.” Current public health guidelines continue to state that people should stay two metres apart but Cllr Marie Moloney asked for confirmation on the future of footpath widening plans should that recommendation be reduced to one metre. “What are ye [the Council] going to do, dig up all the footpaths and kerbing and waste a lot of money?” asked the Kilcummin-based councillor. In a separate move, Cllr Grady put forward a motion to reopen Plunkett St to traffic during the day. Under the current Safe Streets plan the town centre street is closed 24 hours a day and will remain so until January at least. Prior to Safe Streets being implemented, the street was only closed to vehicular traffic between 7pm and 7am, and Grady wanted to revert to this format. A proposal by Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan to amend Grady’s motion to revert Plunkett St to overnight closures once the pandemic was over was overruled by the Council executive as motions cannot be changed mid-meeting. It seemed there was a lot of support for Cllr O’Callaghan’s idea but Cllr Grady failed to find a seconder for his original plan and the motion fell. It will take at least six months before another motion on the future of Plunkett St can be put forward but one thing for sure is that battle is far from over.

New signage to deter congregating outside school | By Michelle Crean A new initiative by one local school compliments their COVID Response Plan and now staff are encouraging parents, students and staff to embrace the change.

Legendary broadcaster to be remembered at stadium entrance

Staff and students from St Brigid's have designed signage which has been placed outside the three main school gates showing the times and distances it takes to walk from any of the main car parks in town to school. They're now in talks with Killarney Muncipal Council and hope that other schools will follow their lead in promoting students getting dropped at the different car parks. "The core message is even more important now as walking and cycling to school and work not only is good for the environment, mental and physical health, but also reduces the potential of congregating at school gates," Sher-

ee Murphy, Green Schools Co-ordinator, explained. Sheree and her committee comprising of Transition Year students have, over the last two years, been working hard to promote the encouragement of walking and cycling to school. "For example it only takes five minutes to walk from Beech Road car park to the main school entrance. By students getting dropped here it would decrease the amount of traffic hugely in around the school and would save parents from being stuck in traffic also," Sheree said. "On the signage you will also see the slogan "A Walk A Day, Keeps the CO2 Away", which Aideen Mullen of Transition Year produced." St Brigid's received their fourth green flag in May which was for their work in promoting alternative means of travelling to school.

A plan to dedicate a roundabout to the legendary Radio Kerry broadcaster Weeshie Fogarty was approved at the Killarney Municipal Council (KMD) meeting yesterday (Thursday). | By Sean Moriarty The late Weeshie was a staunch Legion GAA supporter. He played for the green and white from the underage ranks until an eye injury ended his playing career, but not before he had won an All-Ireland medal with Kerry in 1969. His broadcasting career started in 1989 and he hosted Radio Kerry’s award-winning 'Terrace Talk' until shortly before his death in November 2018.

Elected members and council officials want to remember the great footballer and broadcaster and a proposal was put before a KMD meeting yesterday to name the roundabout at Dalton's Avenue/Marian Terrace and adjacent to the main entrance to Fitzgerald Stadium in his memory. “His heart and soul was in Fitzgerald Stadium,” Cllr Donal Grady told the meeting. “It is very fitting to dedicate this to his memory.”

15,000 jobs at risk in hospitality sector Local councillor and publican Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan - described Government's €16m restart grant to be divided between the country’s 3,500 pubs as "an insult" - and warned that 15,000 jobs are at risk in the hospitality sector in Kerry unless the Government steps in and offers realistic aid packages to the industry. | By Sean Moriarty Mr O’Callaghan was speaking after he led a group of Killarney and Kerry-based publicans to Leinster House on Wednesday to protest the death of rural pubs. They carried a coffin to the gates of Leinster House to symbolise the death of the rural pubs, while supporters from the county looked on. They took it in turns, in small groups to comply with social distancing rules, to stage their day long protest outside the Dáil. Killarney publicans that took part in the protest include Niall's brother Paudie (Fáilte Hotel), Patrick O’Sullivan (Tatler Jack), John O’Shea (Jack C’s), and Tadgh Kelly (The Shanty, Ballyfinnane). Kerry TDs that met with the publicans during their three-hour protest included Minister for Education Norma Foley, Brendan Griffin, Michael Healy-Rae, Danny Healy-Rae, and Pa Daly. “Everyone in the hospitality sector across Ireland, pubs, hotels, coach tours, need to come together and organise one massive protest march in Dublin – but we can’t do that with COVID-19 crowd

restrictions,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “And what they never told is that if pubs that were opened since August, and many had to open and sell food just to survive, are not entitled to the grant,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “There is no leadership in our Government and they have no idea what is happening in rural Ireland. We will get the grant in the next few weeks but our rates are due too so they give with one hand and take with another.” The publicans say that unless Government brings forward meaningful supports pub culture will all but disappear from Ireland. “We will be turned into a sterile nation,” he said. Pubs will be allowed to reopen on September 21, but Kerry publicans say huge problems remain within the sector. “The death knell of rural pubs is the death knell of rural communities,” he added. “These pubs contribute to the local community, they sponsor local football teams and they allow people to meet and socialise – there are huge mental health issues at stake.”

PROTEST: A group of Killarney publicans, led by Niall 'Botty' O'Callaghan outside the Dail on Wednesday.

RESCUE: Kerry Mountain Rescue Team volunteers attended two separate incidents over the weekend.

Rescue team attend two separate incidents over the weekend | By Michelle Crean It was a busy weekend for brave volunteers of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) who had two callouts one in very difficult weather conditions. On Saturday, the team were tasked to evacuate a female hillwalker with a lower leg injury near the base of the ZigZags on Cnoc na Toinne at approximately 3.50pm. A number of team members on the hill assisted the casualty to Ard na Locha where she was evacuated by Land Rover to Lisleibane. Later in the afternoon at approximately 6pm, the team was again called this

time to an incident at the summit of Carrauntoohil where a male walker in his 60s had taken ill. Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 115 was on scene but due to poor weather conditions was unable to assist with the evacuation of the casualty. KMRT members climbed to the summit and treated the casualty on scene before short-roping him down to Ard na Locha via the Devil’s Ladder. The casualty was then taken by Land Rover from Ard na Locha to an awaiting ambulance at Kissane’s Cross. A total of 16 team members were involved in the rescue operation which concluded at 00.30.

Bypass at least 10 years away – road engineer confirms | By Sean Moriarty Killarney motorists will have to wait at least another 10 years before a new road between the town and Farranfore will be open to traffic. While that might seem like bad news, the good news is that the project has officially re-entered Phase One. Senior Engineers with the National Road Design Office in Castleisland have begun a route survey that will now include taking traffic from the Fossa area to the Tralee road in addition to the outer relief road. A previous attempt to build this road ended up being binned after the economic crash of 2008. A potential route was identified at that time but because there was such a delay between the initial findings and taking into account current traffic levels the engineers were forced to go back to the drawing board. Paul Curry of the National Road Design Office made a presentation of current plans to yesterday's (Thursday) Killarney Municipal District meeting. Mr Curry’s presentation is very detailed

and highlights, among other issues, the need to solve traffic congestion on the Hans Liebherr Road and the diversion of traffic away from the N72 near Fossa village. Mr Curry cited the progression of other bypasses including Adare, Newcastle West, Abbeyfeale and Ballvourney/Macroom as positive steps. “As these projects come on stream it can be expected that the N72 will become more strategic in national terms,” he told the meeting. Mr Curry said his team hope to publish a route by the end of 2021 and release a design package by the end of 2022. “It is 10 years away, maybe 12,” he added. “And that is assuming there will be funding in place.” Due to COVID-19 restrictions the meeting was limited to two hours and Mr Curry’s presentation was cut short. However, the Council executive promised the elected members that a more detailed meeting, exclusively for the bypass and other traffic issues, will take place before the end of September.

“Results reflected the efforts of the students” The usual gathering of nervous students and anxious parents did not take place in the Refectory at St Brendan’s College on Monday last. The hallways and classrooms were alive with the usual sounds of school. However, in the homes of the 115 Leaving Certificate students an individual drama played out as they opened the Calculated Grade Portal and waited for the login to allow them access their Leaving Certificate results for 2020.

| By Michelle Crean “Clearly, these are unique times,” Principal, Sean Coffey said. “With our own set of their results, the school became aware of the excellent results and future opportunities of the Class of 2020. Whether our students targeted university, college, apprenticeship or the world of work, the set of results will allow these opportunities to be experienced by our students.” As always, the results reflected the efforts of the students and their teachers over the course of the past six years, he added. “This year, the estimated grades process made student expectations more

fraught.” Sean expressed his delight with the results and offered the support of the school to students who may have queries, especially following the CAO process. “The Sixth Years of 2020 deserve every opportunity to avail of their targeted Third Level course,” he said. “It is our hope that the CAO process will be expanded to minimise points inflation in the coming days.” He added that the school looks forward to welcoming back this cohort for their formal graduation when Public Health Guidance allows.

"We missed sharing in their celebrations"

Three Presentation Killarney girls are elated to have received 625 points while in excess of 31 percent of students received over 500 points.

HAPPY: Killarney Community College student Ciara Kearney was delighted to receive 601 points in her Leaving Cert this week.

THRILLED: Natalia Leane from Killarney Community College is thrilled with her Leaving certificate results this week.

"We are incredibly proud of them" | By Michelle Crean It's been an exceptional year of learning in very difficult circumstances but that didn't stop two local students beating the odds and getting over 600 points in their Leaving Cert this week. Killarney Community College (KCC) students Ciara Kearney, who was ecstatic to receive 601 points and Karen O'Donoghue achieved over 600 points - managed the feat even though the school was suddenly cut short in March and the stress of whether the traditional exams would even go ahead. On Monday morning, rather than the traditional norm of meeting friends at school to collect their results together over 60 students from KCC instead nervously checked them online to see what the new Calculated Grades would mean for their futures. Many from the school scored in the 400500 and the 500-600 point range. "We are incredibly proud of them," Principal Stella Loughnane told the Killarney Advertiser. "The unusual circumstances in which they received their results should not take away from admirable amount of hard work, effort and dedication they put in over the last two years to get to where they are today. A piece of paper should not define you, but it's hard not to get excited about the endless doors they have opened for themselves as a result of their resilience and determination to succeed. As one chapter of their lives concludes, the next one is filled with endless possibilities. A huge congratulations to the Leaving Certificate Class of 2020 at Killarney Community College. Completing a Leaving Certificate is an accomplishment at any time, but to do so during the COVID-19 pandemic while engaging in Blended Online Learning is no small feat. In fact, it is a sign of the students maturity

and dedication to their studies." Staff, parents and students played their part in this year's Leaving Certificate, and it has really paid off with outstanding results that well places students in their next journey onto college and university, or onto their chosen apprenticeships, she added. Ahead of today's (Friday) CAO first round offers students are already confident that their chosen courses will be on offer to them, she explained. "Despite the surge in higher numbers achieving H1s across the country the college Stella wonders what the impact will be on points required for courses. "The hope that additional places on offer at most colleges and universities should counteract this concern." Deputy Principal, Eilish O'Leary noted Maths, languages and, in particular, STEM subjects, excelled this year with a trend showing towards student demands in these areas.

RESULTS: Killarney Community College student Karen O'Donoghue who achieved over 600 points in her Leaving Cert this week and hopes to go on to art college.

| By Michelle Crean This week Principal Róisín Moore and staff congratulated the class of 2020 on their Leaving Certificate and Leaving Certificate Applied results. "The Leaving Certificate journey was particularly arduous and harrowing this year and the students faced enormous uncertainty and had to cope with a constantly evolving situation from March 12 until May 8," Roisin told the Killarney Advertiser. "These students missed out on many of the rites of passage associated with the completion of second level education. The outstanding results this year are testament to the dedication and commitment exhibited by the students not just in their final year but throughout their senior cycle. We were thrilled that three of our students were awarded maximum of 625 points and in excess of 31 percent of students received in excess of 500 points. This is in line with the school’s academic profile in previous years. All of our Leaving Certificate applied students received distinctions." Monday was a most surreal day in the school as the usual excitement, apprehension and energy associated with results day was absent, she added. "However, the most striking was the absence of the girls who, due to COVID-19 restrictions, were required to access their results online. As a school we missed meeting them and sharing in their celebrations. We are however mindful that for many of our girls the uncertainty is not over as they await third level offers on Friday. In addition, on Monday the students will be given access to the estimated per-

centages assigned to them by the school. As a school we know that these estimated percentages will, in many cases, be at variance with the Calculated Grades assigned by the DES and will leave parents and students with numerous questions. The process used by the DES to convert the school’s estimated percentage into Calculated Grades remains unclear, she explained. "Unfortunately, some students including those who studied additional subjects outside of school will have little alternative except to commence preparations to sit the written papers in November thus prolonging the uncertainty. It is our hope that no matter what the future holds for the class of 2020 that they will look back fondly on their time in St Brigid’s and that they will always be proud to be Pres girls."

Huge choice of courses available at Kerry College | By Michelle Crean

COURSES: Admissions Officers at Kerry College Ella O’Donoghue, John Herlihy, Niamh O’Donovan say there's a range of courses on offer.

All around the country there are many types of training and further education centres - but in Kerry two Killarney people are behind the first integrated college of Further Education and Training in Ireland.

On March 4 the new Admissions Office, which is part of their expansion plans, was officially opened. However, eight days later there was a sudden closure due to the lockdown - but it didn’t deter staff who worked tremendously hard behind the scenes to get courses ready for this new term. Now they’ve reopened and are witnessing unprecedented demand for their courses. This coming Monday, as a way of showcasing their services, they’re planning a virtual information session at 6.30pm for parents, school leavers, and those considering a return to further education and training. Only one hundred places are available so registration via https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/729093166967768332 is essential.

Admissions Officers John Herlihy from Kilcummin, Ella O’Donoghue from Ardaneanig, alongside Niamh O’Donovan from Tralee, are working hard behind the scenes helping to expand the range of courses on offer at Kerry College (KC). Not only does the college have three different types of courses; employment, progression to third level and apprenticeships - but it’s expanding the number of premises and tutors available. Kerry College has campus locations at Clash Road, Tralee, Denny Street, Tralee, Monavalley, Tralee and Church Street, Listowel. It is part of Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB) – which funds and manages a range of Primary, Post Primary and Further Education and Training (FET) provision across Kerry.

One challenge the college is overcoming is trying to accommodate the numbers on courses. Rather than offering a blended learning option, they’ve instead opted to rent more classrooms and hire

additional tutors to allow for social distancing, Admissions Officer John Herlihy explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “We are taking over new premises in a number of locations in Tralee to accommodate social distancing. Instead of having a group of 20 learners – we’ll have two groups of 10, socially distanced. The best learning experience for our students is face-to-face.” And some classes have started already including a class in Fitzgerald Stadium in Payroll and Bookkeeping, the Radio Broadcasting course in Monavalley, and next Monday they have 24 trainee Outdoor Activity Instructors starting their year-long training course in Cappanalea. And a number of students from KC are part of a new digital campaign to coincide with the Leaving Cert results and will feature on platforms including Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, Spotify and the Audio XI steaming network which will consist of both display and audio adverts. SOLAS is the state body charged with the development and implementation of FET

strategy in Ireland. And John, who previously worked in Radio Kerry, recorded the interviews at the Radio Production Studios at KC’s Monavalley Campus in Tralee. Local versions of the adverts are also airing on Radio Kerry and Spin Southwest. “It’s the first integrated college of Further Education in Ireland. We’re building something new,” John said. KC offers over one hundred full-time courses including; Applied Science, Social Studies, Culinary Arts, Nursing, IT Support, Animation, Music, Computer Game Design, CAD, Engineering, Business, Medical and Office Administration, Healthcare, Pharmacy Sales, Physiotherapy, Outdoor Activity Instructor Training, Sports Nutrition, Pre-Teaching, Pre-Law and Pre-Garda Studies and Pre-PE Teaching amongst others. You can browse and sign up for all courses online at www.kerrycollege.ie/fulltime-courses/.

Ian begins career in radio broadcasting | By Michelle Crean

Taking openly about the accident which changed his life three years ago has led to a career in radio broadcasting for one inspirational Killarney teen. Ian O'Connell (19) was one of the hundreds of Killarney students to receive his Leaving Cert results on Monday morning - the day he started his Radio Broadcasting course in Kerry College. The former St Brendan's College student made his way to the Monavalley campus in Tralee to begin the eight week taster course which he hopes will get him into the year long course so that he can follow his dreams of working in broadcasting. It just happened that his course started the morning his Leaving Cert results were

released online and he told the Killarney Advertiser that after logging in online at the campus he was "happy out" with the points he got.

"I'm happy out. I wasn't nervous and I didn't lose too much sleep over it." His appearance on The Late Late Show in 2018 and the many interviews over the

years speaking about his life-changing accident inspired him into his chosen career path. "Since my accident I've been on the radio many times and ever since The Late Late Show I wanted to work in broadcasting. It's been my way of talking about it. Before my accident I wouldn't have dreamed of doing it." On the course he says he'll get a taste of every part of radio broadcasting but sees himself working in front of the mic. He added that he was saddened to hear of the unexpected death of Radio Kerry broadcaster Sean Hurley from Killarney this week. "Sean interviewed me a number of times of the years. My condolences to all the Hurley family."

Keydates and options for

Leaving Certs 2020 This has been an emotional week for the Class of 2020. Results day brought such mixed feelings from disappointment to delight, relief that they had arrived, and worry about CAO points and offers. For many the wait for the Round 1 CAO offers which were issued today (Friday) at 2pm online was really difficult as you tried to second guess what the entry points for 2020 would be. Regardless of how you are feeling it is important to realise that there are various options open to you at this stage and it is equally important for all students to watch the key dates coming up in the next two weeks as all deadlines are strict, so don’t miss them.

CAO Round 1 Offers

Friday (September 11) from 2pm If you have applied for Level 8 and Level 7/6 courses you may get offers from both lists and you must choose one. Once you accept a place you will not be offered anything that is below that course in your order of preference list but you may be offered a course that is above it in subsequent rounds if the points come down in Round 2, 3 and so on. If you do not accept a place by the deadline your offer will lapse. If you wish to defer a place do not accept your offer. Instead you must email or write to the Admissions Office of the college or university immediately giving your name, your CAO number and the course code of the offer you want to defer and set out the reason for the request. Put ‘DEFERRED ENTRY’ in the subject line of the email. The turnaround time is short and deferred entry requests must arrive at the Admission's Office at least two days before the reply date in the offer notice so don’t waste time applying for the deferral once you receive an offer. Check www.cao.ie for all details of offers, acceptances and deferrals as well as key dates.

Appeals and sitting the exams in November From Monday next (September 14), you will be see the percentage marks predicted by the schools as well as the final marks after standardisation by the Calculated Grades executive office. If you wish to appeal you can do so, but this year that

appeal will relate only to the process; in other words a check that the data was transferred correctly without administrative errors. The percentage grade awarded by the school cannot be changed. If you are still unhappy with your grade you have the option to sit the Leaving Cert written papers in November. You can choose to sit one, some, or all of the subjects you have already gotten grades for and if you get a higher grade in the written paper you get the benefit of that higher grade. This means you are getting to use the best combination of results from the Calculated Grades and the results of the written papers for points to apply to college in 2021/2022.

Other Options

If sitting the exams does not appeal to you there are other options. Second Chance maths exam: If you haven’t met the minimum maths requirement for your chosen course the following universities and ITs are running second chance maths exams next week. Some registrations close today (Friday), but others remain open until next week. Check out the details on their websites – ITTralee, GMIT, CIT, WIT, LYIT, Carlow IT, Dundalk IT, Sligo IT, TUD, UL, NUI Galway, Maynooth University. If you are successful and have the required points you will be offered a place in subsequent CAO rounds. CAO Available Places will open on September 14 at 12 noon. If colleges and universities have any new courses that opened from application after the Change of Mind deadline or if any places remain unfilled in particular courses after all offers have been made and the waiting lists of applicants meeting minimum entry requirements have been exhausted, such vacancies will be advertised on www.cao.ie. BEHIND YOUR BUSINESS "County face masks are our best seller" EXCLUSIVE

Never in their wildest dreams did the Kerry GAA Store staff think that this summer county branded face masks would be their biggest seller! DELIGHTED: PACO/Regatta staff member Gillian Heffernan is delighted to help customers in the store since it reopened in the Killarney Outlet Centre. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy

"Opening changing rooms is the sensible option" With a one way system through the shop, changing rooms open to the public and hand sanitisers throughout the store the PACO/Regatta store in the Outlet Centre has had to make some big changes for customers' safety once it reopened. | By Michelle Crean Store Manager Fiona Horgan said that the sudden mid-March closure was a shock but major sanitisation policies have been implemented allowing customers to feel safe in store. New changes in the dual PACO and Regatta shop include a one way system into the store by entering on the right hand side and customers are kindly asked to make sure they use one of the two bottles of hospital grade hand sanitisers available to keep everyone safe. Customer numbers are limited to 15 and clothing used in the changing room is taken by one of the four staff members, sanitised and put away for 24 hours. "We've done this since the day we opened," Fiona told the Killarney Advertiser. "It's a hell of a lot more work but you get used to it. It helps people maintain the two metre distance in store and they feel more comfortable and we can give them one-to-one attention. We do this too to keep our staff and customers safe." Since reopening on June 15, staff have been exceptional to work with in the "new normal" while sales have been going well, she added. "Mother's Day was the last day we operated before we reopened on June

15. It's a destination shop. Killarney is such a destination town especially this time of year with staycations of every age. What we're finding at the moment is younger tourists. There's a whole spectrum who would have been the Ibiza market and I genuinely believe that young people saved during the lockdown." And she added that their PACO/Regatta store is probably one of the only shops in Killarney that have their changing rooms open. After seeking professional advice on sanitising the shop for a number of different scenarios including returns, they decided to open the changing rooms for customers, with Fiona stating that it's the safest option. "From our point of view people are taking it home and trying it on there. We sanitise the changing rooms regularly throughout the day. The customer wears a mask and they are allowed three items in with them. The items are taken and sanitised and put away for 24 hours. It's much more sensible that way." The shop, which specialises in women's wear, men's and children's clothing, including men's dressy casual brand Peter Gribby, is now offering a promotion, she added. "As a goodwill gesture to our customers we're now offering an in store promotion with up to 50 percent off our new collection."

| By Michelle Crean The shop, located in the Killarney Outlet Centre since 2013, is known for the latest in county GAA and club gear. For almost two years Dr Crokes former player Luke Quinn has been at the helm as Manager and didn't envisage the year of 2020 including a lockdown, upheaval of GAA fixtures or lack of Croke Park action. The closure on March 16, like for many businesses, was unexpected. However, sales online sustained the business, while the reopening saw a surge in holidaymakers buying Kerry gear. "The fact that there was no football on we thought people wouldn't be buying any gear," Luke this week told the Killarney Advertiser. "We're down on last year because of no Croke Park games but we have held our own. We're selling to clubs locally including bibs, jerseys and all types of footballs and equipment. We had a great summer because even through there were no matches all the staycationers were mad to buy Kerry gear. Kerry is now a brand in itself!" Face masks have also helped the tills keep ringing and they've a new range

for the county championship 2020. "We've three different types of county face masks between €7 and €9 - they're our best seller and flying out the door." Customers can relax in the knowledge that plenty of safety measures have been implemented. Not only is there a queuing system outside when the shop is busy but a one way system inside. "We got sanitiser stations from local business Greenway who also sponsor the County Board. We have floor markings and a one way system, as well as full Perspex screens at the till for the safety of staff and customers." And their website www.kerrygaastore.ie is getting a revamp and will be launched very soon, he added. "We're remodelling the website to make it more interactive." He said that it's great to be back open and seeing new and regular customers once again. "Getting back to normal is so important for the staff and our customers. It's great to get the doors open again, to see the locals and to talk football!"

Kerry Airport vows to fight back after pandemic losses | By Sean Moriarty Kerry Airport has warned that it could take years to recover from the devastating effects of the pandemic. The airport's Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place in Tralee last week where the 2019 year-end financial report was presented to shareholders.

TEE OFF: Eoghan Cronin from Aghadoe (centre black) with members of the MP Moran team at a previous Kerry Association London Golf Day

Kerry-London golf day goes international for fundraiser The Kerry Association London’s (KAL) annual golf day, organised this year to raise funds for the Seámus O’Brien Fund, will run to a new format this year to overcome international travel restrictions and crowd gathering rules. | By Sean Moriarty The annual event, which raises money for Irish and London charities, is set to take place at Aldenham Golf Club, Watford on September 18. This year’s event will raise funds for Seámus O’Brien, the Firies man who lost a leg in an industrial accident in 2018. He lived in London for a few years and played Gaelic Football with the Kingdom Kerry Gaels, a club that has strong ties to the Kerry Association London. The KAL’s golf outing is always well attended by Kerry people living in London or by local golfers who travel over to make a weekend of it. Ongoing travel restrictions and crowd gathering rules had put the success of the event in jeopardy so they have extended the event's scope and will accept entries from any golf course in the world over from September 18 to 25. Golfers are free to nominate their own golf club, pay the appropriate green fee locally and then enter the KAL tournament online.

The airport reported a strong 2019, but so far this year passenger numbers are at an alarming low level. Less than one thousand people used the facility between April and June this year. Only 808 passengers travelled through the airport, all on the Aer Lingus Regional Kerry-Dublin route, during the second quarter of 2020 compared to 102,534 on all routes for the same quarter last year. “Our country continues its undaunted struggle to overcome this virus. There is no doubt, when the time is right and it is safe to do so, the Airport will regroup

and continue its mission in supporting Kerry and this regions’ economy,” Kerry Airport’s Chief Executive Officer John Mulhern said. “Undoubtedly there will be many months, if not years, of toil ahead to recover fully. Kerry Airport will face that challenge unabated.” Prior to last week’s AGM The Minister of State with responsibility for International and Road Transport and Logistics, Hildegarde Naughten TD, visited the airport to hear a first-hand account of how the COVID-19 pandemic and travel restrictions have affected Kerry Airport. It is understood that during this meeting airport management have asked for Government intervention to save Kerry and other regional airports. “I am confident that the Government is fully aware of the steep downward trajectory in the financial position at all airports and will in due course announce industry specific financial measures to support us through the industry's continued lockdown,” Mr Mulhern added.

“We have decided to make the event international and already we have people playing in Kerry, Scotland and America, and we haven’t even got started yet,” KAL’s Dermot O’Grady said. “With everyone spreading the word we can make history by holding the first world-wide golf day, for a laugh and a great cause. We’re hoping that no matter where you are, Ceann Sibeál, Wentworth, Emirates Golf Club or Augusta, we will all be playing for the same goal and the spirit of the day will be with us all.”

HOW IT WORKS

Purchase your ticket through eventbrite: http://bit.ly/KALInternational - £100 per team of 4. Choose your team and play any course you wish either on September 18 itself in conjunction with the London event, or during the time frame (18 – 25). You may choose to play your home course or make an adventurous day out of it and try a course you’ve never played before. WhatsApp your Score Card directly to (085)1782833. The winning teams will be announced on Saturday, September 25.

CULTURE NIGHT: Culture Night is set to take place online this year due to the ongoing restrictions. Pictured are: Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen and Kate Kennelly, KCC Arts Officer

Culture Night to take place online later this month | By Michelle Crean Culture Night is set to take place again this year, however there's a big change to online due to the continued COVID-19 restrictions. Lots of the events will take place online to ensure public safety while still providing arts and cultural groups the opportunity of showcasing their work to the Kerry public. Every year the Kerry Visual Artists’ Showcase is launched on Culture Night. This year the launch will be held online, with a 360 panoramic view of the gallery available on Kerry County Arts’ Facebook: @ KerryCoArts page from 6pm on Friday, September 18. There will also be images of the artists’ works, speeches and access to the exhibition catalogue. The Fanzini Brothers will be online with a visual extravaganza full of their signature flair and fun. Catherine Young’s 'Welcoming Project' will be online with a retrospective of what the innovative dance initiative has achieved using dance as a means of social integration. The County Museum has taken a number of events online already this year, and Culture Night will be the same with music and tours available from the museum’s website on the night. “It’s a credit to arts and culture groups in Kerry that they are adjusting and adapting to these strange circumstances we are in,” Kate Kennelly, Arts Officer, said. “I would urge people to virtually drop in to as many events as possible on Culture Night and show their support via views, clicks and likes until the time comes again when we can show our appreciation with applause.” St John’s Theatre in Listowel will also

take part featuring a live performance on the night which will be livestreamed on St John’s Facebook page. They are also hosting events run by the Listowel Writers’ Museum (Tales from the Kingdom) and a harping event organised by Jimmy Deenihan. The Dingle Hub is hosting an online exhibition by Silke Michels and the artist group Mink will have an online launch of their exhibition which is hanging at ANAM Cultural Centre in Killarney. Rebecca Lyons in Tralee has taken her origami installation online and Ionad an Bhlascaoid is hosting an exhibition tonnfuaime (sound wave) organised by Áine Ní Chiobháin that will be online. The natural time for hydrangeas is late summer There is a photo at home of myself and my brother as children standing in front of a bank of blooming hydrangeas at Muckross House, and I imagine there is a similar picture in most homes in Killarney! Hydrangeas for me, always announce the end of summer and start of Autumn, the last walk at Muckross and the beginning of a school year. Nowadays, unfortunately, they can be bought in flower at almost any time of the year, confusing both people and hydrangeas. The natural time for flowering is late summer, however, buying a flowering hydrangea at almost any other time of the year leads to several years of non-flowering, as it regulates itself back to nature’s intentions. Hydrangeas like moist, well-drained, moderately fertile soil. They prefer shelter from cold winds, especially northern and easterly winds, as they scorch the large, soft new leaves. Many people are a bit confused as to the best way to prune hydrangeas. There seems to be a lot of conflicting advice out there, but that is mainly due to the fact that there are several different groups of hydrangeas. The trick is to know which ones you have! The most grown type is the macrophylla group. These consist of ‘mopheads’ or Hortensias, and ‘lacecaps’. Mopheads are the large round flowers, lacecaps are flattened flower heads, surrounded by a ring of larger infertile flowers. Both of these may turn different colours depending on your soil. Flower colour is affected by the availability of aluminium ions in the soil, so basically, if your soil is alkaline or has lime in it, flowers will be pink. If your soil pH is acidic, anything less than 5.5, they will be blue. You can regulate this somewhat, by adding sulphate of iron, or ‘hydrangea colourant’. White blooms are largely

unaffected by pH. You can really only influence the blue colour, as adding lime, in the hope of creating pink blooms, generally leads to chlorosis – yellow leaves. If your hydrangeas are not flowering, but do have good green growth, it is often because they lack phosphorous. One way to remedy this is by adding bone meal to your soil, at the rate of a tablespoon to two square feet, every three weeks in the growing season. These shrubs should be cut back in early spring. Cut out old wood, dead wood and surplus stems. This groups flowers on the last year’s growth, so take care not to prune too late – when the new growth just starts it's ideal as you can see what has died back over the winter. Hydrangea arborescens and paniculata are two other popular groups, the beautiful ‘Annabelle’ is an example of H.arborescens, and ‘Wim’s red’ is one example of H.paniculata. These flower on the current year’s growth and should be pruned back hard in spring. Keep a good framework of branches by cutting half the stem to a pair of buds just above ground level, and prune the other half to the height you want – anywhere between 25 and 60cm. The best flowers are on strong new growth, but you also want to maintain a strong structure. H. quercifolia, or the oak leaved hydrangea, and H. aspera, should only be pruned lightly to remove dead wood, or weak stems. These are, in my experience, the most tender of the hydrangea groups, and I need to grow mine in a very sheltered spot. They tend to be unreliable flowerers, and like a good deal of sun. However, the oak leaved hydrangea is well worth a spot in the garden, if for nothing else than its beautiful autumn colour!

VIRTUAL LADIES DAY: This year's Listowel Races Ladies Day will take place online due to current restrictions.

Listowel Races to take place behind closed doors This month's Listowel Racing from Monday, September 21 to Saturday 26, will take place behind closed doors in what has been a difficult but unavoidable decision made by Listowel Race Committee due to the current restrictions in place. These measures are to safeguard everyone’s health and well-being during the current health situation to ensure racing can continue in a safe and appropriate manner. All those who have to be on site including jockeys, trainers, medics etc., will be subject to strict health screening both in advance and on the day of racing. "Our team at the racecourse are working with An Garda Síochána to ensure

that Listowel Racecourse will be safe and secure for those taking part in the week-long event. "We are therefore asking in the interest of public health that you do not attend Listowel Racecourse or the immediate vicinity of the racetrack itself as it will be closed. Drones in the vicinity of the racetrack are also prohibited. We would be grateful to you for respecting this." While they are disappointed that you will not be able to join them in Listowel this year to enjoy the Harvest Festival Meeting, you can still tune in to TG4 from Monday 21 to Saturday 26 and to Racing TV also, from the comfort of your own home. "Wherever you decide to enjoy the Listowel Races Harvest Festival we would appeal to you that you comply fully

Ladies Day this year will be a virtual event on Friday, September 25. The McElligotts Honda Best Dressed Lady will win €500 cash prize and a bespoke piece of jewellery from master jeweller Brian de Staic for the Most Contemporary New Season Autumn Look and a staycation for ‘Best Hat’ or Headpiece. To enter the McElligotts Honda Virtual Ladies Day all you have to do is take (or get someone else to take) a photo or video (less than 15 seconds) of yourself all dressed up - as if you were heading to Ladies Day. Post your photo or video before 4pm on Friday, September 25 to either your Instagram or Facebook page and importantly hashtag #listowelladiesday2020 and tag @listowelraces and you could be a winner. Follow @listowelraces on their social media channels throughout the day for updates and the announcement of finalists at 5pm and overall winners at 7pm. The judges, headed Orla Diffily, fashion stylist, RTE Today and model agency owner, will shortlist five finalists who will be announced on social media at 5pm and the overall winners in each category will be announced at 7pm.

The unmasking of a press conference President Donald Trump demanded that a news journalist should take off his face mask during a press briefing on Monday. The news conference, part of President’s official Labor Day Bank Holiday engagements, took place on the lawn of the White House, common procedure since COVID-19 crowd distancing restrictions were put in place.

Most reporters in the White House press pool wear face masks during briefings. Jeff Mason of Reuters was asking questions when he was interrupted by Trump. “You’re going to have to take that off, please. You can take it off. How many feet away are you?” he asked. Mason decided against removing the mask and instead said he would talk louder.

A former children's TV presenter has denied he is mystery artist Banksy after a social media rumour gained traction this week. People began to speculate that artist Neil Buchanan, who presented 'Art Attack' on ITV from 1990 and 2007, was the anonymous England-based street artist who creates anonymous graffiti in public places. A statement on Neil's official site denies the allegation. 'Neil Buchanan is NOT Banksy. PLEASE NOTE: We have been inundated with enquiries over the weekend regarding the current social media story. Unfortunately this website does not have the infrastructure to answer all these enquiries individually, however we can confirm that there is no truth in the rumour whatsoever. Neil spent Lockdown with vulnerable members of his family and is now preparing to launch his new art collection in 2021. Thank you and please stay safe.' More recently Banksy sprayed the inside of a London Underground train carriage with messages about the spread of Coronavirus, before it was removed by Transport for London. The mystery of who the real Banksy is remains for now!

“Well, if you don’t take it off, you’re very muffled, so if you would take it off, it would be a lot easier,” added the President. Mason continued by raising his voice before the President conceded.

“It’s … better, yeah. It’s better,” he said.

But the incident wasn’t over. Later in the conference another reporter took off his mask to ask a question.

“You sound so clear,” said Trump.

Eircodes can save tradespeople and customers time and hassle

Tellus Airborne Survey takes off over South Central Ireland The next phase of the Tellus Survey – a nationwide programme of Geological Survey Ireland – will take off over southern and central counties of Ireland in the comings days. Tellus is a programme to collect geochemical and geophysical data on rocks, soil and water across Ireland. To gather the geophysical data, a low-flying airplane equipped with state-of-theart instruments will fly over counties Laois, Tipperary, Kilkenny and Waterford, and neighbouring parts of Offaly, Cork, Carlow and Kildare from September until the end of the year, weather permitting. The Tellus Survey programme has been mapping across Ireland over the last nine years and is currently funded under Project2040 the National Development Plan by Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment. The programme aims to have 75% of Ireland mapped by 2020, with the resulting data having

the potential to deliver positive economic, environmental and agricultural benefits by helping to assist in local environment understanding, soil management, and natural resource potential for these counties. Data collected throughout the Tellus project is pub-

lished and made freely available to all on the Tellus website www.tellus.ie. “The Tellus Survey is an important national project, providing valuable insights into the geological makeup of Ireland," Dr James Hodgson, Senior Geologist and Project Manager for Tellus, said. "The data collected helps us to sus-

tainably manage our environment and natural resources as well as protecting public health." The survey aircraft is a white, twin propeller plane, which is easily identified by its red tail and black stripe as well as the word ‘SURVEY’ and registration number C-GSGF written across both sides of the plane. Based at Waterford airport, the survey plane will be flying at 60 metres over rural areas – about eight times the height of a two-storey house – and 240 metres over urban areas in the coming months, as approved by the Irish Aviation Authority. Due to the low-flying altitude of the survey aircraft, anyone concerned about sensitive livestock is encouraged to contact the Tellus Freephone Information Line on 1800 45 55 65. The Tellus team will be happy to provide information on upcoming flight plans.

Gardaí in Ballybunion are seeking the public's assistance in tracing the whereabouts of 16-year-old Alex Sugrue who is missing.

Gardai seek whereabouts of missing teen

Alex was last seen at 9am on Saturday, September 5 when she left her home in Ballybunion. She is described as being approximately 5ft 1’’ in height, of slim build, with green eyes and blond (bleached) shoulder length hair. When last seen Alex was wearing a red, white and navy

Eircode are partnering with the National Guild of Master Craftsmen in Ireland (NGMC) to highlight the benefits of using an Eircode when booking a tradesperson. Eircodes help customers provide their location and help tradespeople find them easily. The National Guild of Master Craftsmen has over 7,500 members providing over one hundred different trades. Already, many members of the National Guild ask customers for their Eircode when booking jobs, and this number continues to grow. According to consumer research by Eircode in 2019, 94% of households use their Eircode and 29% used it when booking a tradesperson. This is double the number of people who used an Eircode when booking a tradesperson in 2018. Eircode and the NGMC want to increase the use of Eircodes for call-outs as communicating an address location accurately is of great benefit to both the tradesperson and the customer. Eircodes can be found on the free-touse Eircode Finder at eircode.ie. “From a tradesperson’s point of view, the use of Eircode is important as the majority of households like to know the exact time their tradesperson will arrive," Pat Doyle, CEO of the National Guild of Master Craftsmen, said. "The customer has taken time-off to accommodate the tradesperson, so it is important to both parties that delays be avoided. Having the Eircode can help the tradesperson find the location and avoid delays.”

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966

Toning tables aid weight loss and help strengthen muscles It’s never too late... you don’t always have to start on a Monday. It’s all about getting your head organised and your fridge. When going shopping never ever go on an empty stomach or never without a list. Organisation is the key to success in life and in work as we all know but it's nice to be reminded. If you're stuck in a rut and don’t seem to know where to begin, it’s good to start moving as we’re told this all the time. But if the Couch to 5km is a little too much to start (and frightens you a little), I’d highly recommend trying our amazing pilates based toning tables. They are suitable for all ages from 18-88+ judging from our current clients. The oldest clients always refers her good health and mobility to the use of the toning tables since they opened 30 years ago this October. If it’s been a while since you’ve exercised and feel you need to get started but the gym or a class isn’t for you, these amazing toning tables might just be what you need.

Based on pilates which has a science behind it, they lengthen and strengthen every muscle from head to toe. This is important as up until the age of 30 you normally build more bone then you lose. After 35, breakdown occurs faster than bone buildup, which causes a gradual loss of bone mass. If you have osteoporosis, you lose bone mass at a greater rate. After menopause the rate of bone breakdown occurs even more quickly including loss of height, change in posture, shortness of breath, fractures or pain in your lower back. Petite and small frames sometimes have a greater risk and need for exercise. It’s more important now to stay strong especially the core strength which is key with the toning tables. They offer you a greater range of mobility and movement even after your first session. If you haven’t tried them before now is as good a time as ever. With only two to three people at a time you can feel safe and secure doing your workout. We're following all HSE guidelines to keep our staff and valued clients safe. .

Tralee’s gain is Killarney’s loss for proposed GAA museum: Tralee could be after stealing a march on Killarney after a local councillor proposed to build a GAA stadium in the county town.

| By Sean Moriarty Back in 2012 the Kerry Gaelic Culture Museum GAA in Killarney was given the green light. It should have been opened by 2014 - but it never got off the ground due to the economic crash at the time. Three years later an application was made to extend the duration of planning permission for the museum which was proposed to be built on the grounds of Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney. The idea disappeared until Tralee councillor Jim Finucane asked a bi-monthly meeting of Tralee Municipal Council if Kerry County Council could draw up a plan to house a GAA museum in Tralee Court House. A new court house is set to be built in the town as part of the Island of Geese regeneration programme in the town. Killarney councillor and former Kerry footballer Michael Gleeson was a member of the previous museum committee. The group included Kerry Airport secretary Liam Chute, Killarney publican Patrick O’Sullivan who was Kerry County Board Chair at the time and the Killarney Advertiser’s sports journalist Eamon Fitzgerald. They even met with senior Board Fáilte officials but it was stopped dead in its

tracks when the tourism body did not follow up on further meetings just prior to the economic crash. The Killarney committee had made a lot progress in their attempt to build the museum including high-end meetings with Government ministers and promise of a potential bridging loan from the GAA. “Tralee Municipal District are well-entitled to make such a proposal and there is no animosity towards them on that,” Mr Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser. “We had a design, planning permission everything ready to go. We had costed it at around €4 million, which is not an unmanageable amount of money. Fáilte Ireland met us, they told us, as we were in the height of the so-called Celtic Tiger, that our project was not big enough to be considered iconic, but they promised they would meet us to follow up and we have heard nothing since.” Mr Gleeson remained hopeful that Killarney would not be overlooked in the future. "Killarney has the [tourism] footfall to make this project financially viable," he added. "It could serve as a hub, and introduce visitors to the sporting and culture aspects of Kerry and they would radiate from here to all corners of the county and beyond."

Muckross Estate to be the focus of new feature film | By Michelle Crean It will be lights, camera and action in Killarney next month as a new film is to be filmed in Muckross Estate and at The Bog Village, Glenbeigh on The Ring of Kerry. Set for an early 2021 release worldwide, ‘The Kingdom’ - inspired during the darkest days of COVID lockdown is to be one of the greatest Irish period drama feature films and TV series. It was literally an eureka moment one sunny June afternoon while researching the Herbert Family of The Muckross Estate in Killarney, conceived by author and director of Blue Box Productions Walter Ryan-Purcell. “The film location is all there, it’s perfect!” he said. Muckross House, which was built in 1843, the ruins of Muckross Abbey built mid-1400s, and Muckross Traditional Farms will provide incredible scenes for the story of The Herbert Family and their 200 year tenure on the estate. Walter Ryan-Purcell contacted his friend Mary Wood who had a part in the film ‘Tradition’ produced in Kerry a few years ago by Damian O’Callaghan, Declan O’Shea and Tim O’Connor of OC Productions. “It was like turning on all the lights in Ireland! The darkness lifted and a new dawn of film production in Killarney is born. Blue Box Productions Ltd., was incorporated specifically for ‘The Kingdom’ alone, a feature film and TV series likely to be shown in most countries around the world. Muckross House is a national museum expertly curated and managed by the Office of Public Works and a group of very dedicated voluntary Trustees. The support, historical advice and perseverance of Seamus Hassett, Patricia O’Hare, Toddy Doyle and Denis Reidy of Muckross has been phenomenal in the build up to this production.” The story, based in the 1800s, starts with young nine-year-old Kathleen

being sent to America during Black ’47 of The Famine Era, after circumstances for her family on a neighbouring estate turn foul. The Herberts of Muckross and other local landlords live in absolute luxury in their stately homes. However, tensions and emotions within the family and between families arise, fuelled by the upcoming visit of Queen Victoria and other members of The Royal Family. This entangled and gripping story is cleverly written by award winning scriptwriter Luke Corcoran. Director Damian O’Callaghan and his team have attracted the best of Ireland’s actors and crew and make them work their hearts out to produce real raw world class productions. Starring in The Kingdom are Paul Ronan (The Devil’s Own, Veronica Guerin, How I Live Now), Patrick Bergin (Sleeping with The Enemy, Patriot Games, Robinhood), Niamh Sweeney (Trust, Noel, and Gaiety productions), and Tony Murphy (Charlie Casanova, Fair City). “Period drama is very much in demand now following the success of Downton Abbey and others. This is a real first for Ireland. A whole new generation on every continent will again fall in love with The Emerald Isle. From the depths of COVID a new era dawns for Irish film-making.” Blue Box Productions Ltd. is inviting investors to be part of this production company. Further details from wryanpurcell@eircom.net.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

How full is your bucket? The first step we take at Activate with any new client is to sit down for a chat. You may ask why - it's because you are an individual. Why should your fitness be the same as everyone else? One of the major topics we discuss in our initial consult is stress. Not, how much you can lift, or how far you can run or how often you walk the dog - but “how stressed are you?”

But what has stress got to do with fitness? Well, to get healthier we need to know your system can find equilibrium so you can get the optimum results and what your limits are. The easiest way to conceptualise your body’s limit is through the bucket analogy: Imagine you have a bucket, which represents you. Water, representing each stress event, is poured into the bucket. Most buckets have room to hold some water but if the water keeps being poured in, the bucket will overflow. This is our breaking point, and as the water level inches towards the top, we begin to experience symptoms of chronic stress. Luckily, our bucket has a tap at the bottom which represents coping techniques and the things you might do to mitigate the effects of demands and stressors. The more readily we can open the tap, the easier it is to keep the water at optimal level. Next, we need to identify what is filling the bucket. If you are going to take away one point from this entire piece, it should be this; stress isn’t just limited to daily demands like taking on a huge workload, deadlines, relationships, money, etc. Stress exists in various forms and our bodies are constantly bombarded with things that trigger a stress response, adding to our bucket drop by drop. HERE ARE SOME COMMON “SNEAKY” SOURCES OF STRESS: :: Positive or exciting life events :: Lack of sleep or disrupted sleep :: Mental or emotional stress :: Diet

:: :: :: :: :: ::

Over exercising Inappropriate exercise selection Dehydration Gut imbalances or chronic infections Food sensitivities Environmental toxins

The single most effective way to empty that stress bucket is sleep. Stress and sleep are intimately interconnected and can sometimes have an inverse relationship i.e. stress disrupts sleep and poor sleep causes stress.

it's your birthday

What has this got to do with exercise? In general, you should feel energised from your workout. Sure, immediately after you finish something tough you may need 10-20 minutes to recover but if you are regularly hitting a wall mid-workout or leaving the gym feeling like you need a nap to go on, you are overloading your system. This one is a hard pill to swallow, especially if you use exercise as a form of stress relief. It is important to understand that exercise in itself elicits a large stress response from the body. However, if your bucket is getting full, a high intensity workout is enough to push you over the edge. If you are struggling with stress, think about taking more rest days between your workouts and opt for lower intensity movements like strength training, yoga, walking or hiking. You can still enjoy your HIIT workout but consider taking the intensity down several notches. FINDING THE BALANCE If you’ve been living in high stress for a while, you may even feel like you are handling it well or that you aren’t that stressed at all. Keep in mind that if you get to the point of feeling overwhelmed, your bucket is already overflowing. The key here is learning balance and flexibility in your lifestyle. Having a professional coach in your corner can certainly help manage this. If you are looking for some guidance, visit our website www.activate.ie to find out more.

Ahern’s Opel supports local motorcycle racers | By Sean Moriarty Ahern’s Garage has stepped in to help local motorcycle racers by providing a van to allow them transport their racing bikes to and from events. The sport resumed in Ireland last weekend with the Belfast and District Motor Club’s King of Kirkistown meeting taking place at the County Down track. Four Kerry-based riders made the long trip north to dust off the cobwebs ahead of the sport’s resumption in the Republic of Ireland next weekend. The local team used an Opel Vivaro van provided by the county’s main dealer for the German brand. The deal was made possible as racer John Griffin works as a panel beater at the Profix Accident Repairs arm of the family run garage. The Asdee-based rider was out of luck as he suffered a blown engine in his BMW which ruled him out of his two

Superbike Cup races at the event. However, there was plenty to celebrate as his teammates recorded some great results at the famous Ards Peninsula track. Tralee man Robert O’Connell was unlucky not to record a class win during the Supersport Cup race after a bearing failed on his gear shift mechanism. The incident dropped him to second position. He took second in class in race two on his Yamaha. Both races were won by road racing legend Michael Dunlop who made a surprise appearance at the club event ahead of this weekend’s Cookstown Road Races in County Tyrone. Emmett O’Grady took two 12th places in both his Superbike races onboard his TAG Honda with Ullster Champion Jason Lynn winning the second race after national champion Derek Sheils won the opening race. Darragh Crean was fourth and third in each of his Production Twin races on his Suzuki.

Coyne’s successful character-building weekend Local motorcycle racer Kevin Coyne has described his debut weekend at Silverstone as one he will never forget. The world-famous track hosted the third meeting of the British Superbike Championship and the 18-year-old Kerry racer is tackling the HEL Performance British Junior Supersport Championship category for riders under 22.

He is the first Kerry rider to commit to this series. Last weekend’s double-header was a baptism of fire. His lack of track experience meant he was already at a disadvantage over his class rivals. His Kawasaki race bike was also at a speed disadvantage on the fast-flowing corners of the Northamptonshire track. If that wasn’t enough, Coyne was involved in a qualifying session accident on Saturday that resulted in an ankle injury.

Track medics ruled him unfit for Saturday’s opening race in the HEL Performance British Junior Supersport Championship. He was declared fit on Sunday morning but was forced to start from the back of the 34-place grid as he had not set a qualifying time. He recovered to finish 28th, outside his target of a top 20 finish but an acceptable result given everything that had gone against him. The team left Silverstone, on Sunday evening, in good spirits. “Silverstone is a weekend we will never forget,” his father Mark said. “With an injured left foot and to start from the back and to battle every lap to go from 34th to 28th and with very little track knowledge, we are actually very happy with our weekend. The bike might be lacking straight-line speed, so we need to get that sorted too, but thanks to every single person who helped get us back on track several times this weekend.” His next event is at Oulton Park in Cheshire on September 18-20.

CHALLENGING: Local motorcycle racer Kevin Coyne had a series of hurdles to overcome last weekend at the British Superbike Championship.

END OF AN ERA: Oscar was a spectacular sight on the streets of Killarney.

Sadness as much loved horse passes away | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Jaunting Cars said farewell to their long-serving and much-loved horse Oscar who died unexpectedly on Saturday. The Tangney family, who run Killarney Jaunting Cars, said losing Oscar was like mourning a family member. A familiar sight on the streets of Killarney, Oscar stood out from other working horses in the jaunting car business. He was Friesian, a breed originating in the Friesland region of the Netherlands, and are known for being graceful and nimble for their size. Most of the horses working in Killarney are Irish Cobs and it's unusual to see a thoroughbred on jaunting car duty. Oscar carried his own presence, almost like he knew he was better than the rest, and could have been described as the

poser of the Tangney stable. He became ill on Friday, and despite all night attention from the Tangney family and local vet Shane Myers, he passed away on Saturday afternoon. “He was 16-years-old and we had him since he was four,” Michael Tangney told the Killarney Advertiser. “We grew very attached to him. When people saw Oscar coming down the street they would take a step back. He was very tall at 16 hands and we never cut his mane, he had this look and presence about him. He was a picture to look at.” When jarvey Robert Donnelly, who was Oscar’s regular driver and who has been unable to return to full-time employment this season, heard the news he came to pay his respects. “Things are much quieter this year but when Robert heard the news he just came up to say goodbye,” added Michael.

Family gather for Eileen's 90th birthday | By Michelle Crean It was a very special birthday for Eileen Flynn at her home last week as family members gathered to celebrate her 90th year. Due to the current restrictions Eileen wasn't able to go out for a meal or have a party with her neighbours and friends for the momentous occasion on Friday, August 30 - but family called to her home in Lisheenbawn, Farranfore where they made a fuss of her. She was joined by her two

sons John and Jerry, her four daughters Philomena, Eileen, Martina and Ann as well as their spouses and partners. Eight of 13 grandchildren were able to join them as well as two of her great-grandchildren. Her daughter Noreen, who lives in The Bronx in New York, joined them via a WhatsApp video call. "She enjoyed it," her daughter Ann, who travelled down from Westmeath with her husband Keith and two sons Dean and Cody, told the Killarney Advertiser.

SHORTLIST: John Fleming of Muckross Creamery which has been shortlisted for a 2020 Blas na hÉireann award.

Muckross-made ice cream shortlisted for national award | By Sean Moriarty Muckross Creamery has been shortlisted for a 2020 Blas na hÉireann award. Founded by fifth-generation dairy farmer John Fleming, who has diversified the family farm business in Killarney, Muckross Creamery is producing a range of ice cream using its own fresh milk, fresh cream and free-range eggs. His family have been farming in Muckross since the 1840s. The Flemings put forward three different ice cream products to the judges and its Country Caramel and Pecan Nuts cone made the shortlist. While health restrictions will prevent the live Blas na hÉireann festival from going ahead in Dingle next month the awards will move online. Winners will be announced over the

course of the day on October 3 on the Blas website and across social media channels. “We are delighted to get nominated, it is a good publicity boost and we are waiting anxiously for the results in October,” John Fleming told the Killarney Advertiser. No stranger to awards Muckross Creamery won a gold medal at last year’s Listowel Food Festival with their Casey Brothers Stout Ice Cream in association with the Killarney Brewing Company. Other Kerry finalists shortlisted for awards include: Camos Artisan Foods, Dingle Goats Cheese, Kennedy’s Butchers, Kerry Kefir, Knockatee Natural Dairy, Quinlan's Kerry Fish, Wellness Baking Listowel Ltd., Dingle Distillery, Kells Bay Cheese, Micilín Muc, and O’Sullivans Bakery.

"We had a gathering to mark it. We couldn't invite the neighbours which was sad. She was able to see Noreen on the phone and Noreen sang her 'Happy Birthday'. Eileen was born and reared in Lixnaw and moved to Lisheenbawn after she married Joe. Sadly Joe passed away over 10 years ago. Ann said that she was delighted with the low key affair and loved the many presents, one which was a chain with a family tree. Ann described Eileen, who loves music from Big Tom and dancing, as loving and caring, a person you could go to with anything. "She's calm and never panics. She'll always give you the best advice and you can ring her anytime."

90TH BIRTHDAY: Eileen Flynn from Lisheenbawn, Farranfore celebrated her 90th birthday last week.

Calor and Samaritans have announced a partnership which will enable the charity to answer over 4,000 more calls. The support could save people’s lives and change countless others for the better. Through employee engagement, Samaritans can provide training to Calor employees to be active listeners. Samaritans branches work together to ensure there is a 24/7 telephone response available for people who ring the 24-hour 116 123 free helpline. Help is also available online from jo@samaritans. org (NI) or jo@samaritans.ie (ROI) or visit www.samaritans.ie for more options. The Kerry Way Ultra Marathon

The Kerry Way Ultra Marathon 2020: David Campbell, Aisling Kirwan and Stephen Erswell

| By Michelle Crean Keeping a social distance, staying safe and adhering to HSE and Sport Ireland COVID-19 guidelines, was the order of the weekend for the annual Kerry Way Ultra Marathon. Ireland’s longest distance trail route was a weekend of endurance and will power for the 200km non-stop endurance, traversing the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, Iveragh Peninsula. Athletes from Ireland came to experience the gravity of the race. The not-for-profit Race Director Eileen Daly together with support crews and volunteers, circumnavigated the Iveragh Peninsula's byroads and butter roads in search for athletes from 5am on Friday morning to late

on Saturday night. The racers were GPS tracked on the Kerry Way route, making locating their whereabouts on the Kerry Way more manageable. There were three races in total - the Kerry Way Ultra - 200km, the Kerry Way UltraLite - from Sneem to Killarney, and a new Kerry Way UltraNite - from Waterville to Killarney. It was Gavin Byrne who raced home in an amazing time of 23 hours, 37 minutes and 17 seconds, followed by Keith Lane in a time of 24 hours, 01 minute and 58 seconds. "Obviously health is more important, and we were in a privileged and unique posi-

tion in Kerry, because of its remoteness and ease of social distancing. It’s usually families and very close friends make up the support crews and volunteers. We were able to meet all the criteria set out by National Park and Wildlife Services (NPWS) and Kerry County Council (KCC). We are always indebted to the kindness of the Kerry Way landowners and South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP). The marathons reached a phenomenal amount of virtual online viewers who engaged with our live tracking on the Facebook page. The Kerry Way Ultra Marathon is a non-profit ‘no trace race’, and has earned its title as one of the best endurance races in the world.”

WINNER: Harold Cliffton, on the Old Kenmare Road, winner of the Kerry Way UltraLite.

Kenmare gunning for first senior title as Kilcummin try to avoid trap door SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL ___________________________________________________________________________________

Kenmare Shamrocks v Austin Stacks SUNDAY AT 3.30PM FITZGERALD STADIUM

Kenmare and Stacks have been involved in two of the games of the year so far (both, funnily enough, were against Dr Crokes) and there could well be another cracker in store in this senior club decider on Sunday. Injuries are a concern for Shamrocks. Dan McCarthy was a revelation in the group phase but he missed Rounds 1 and 2 of the Kerry SFC after sustaining a significant injury while hurling. Seán O’Shea picked up an apparent dead leg against Shannon Rangers in the first round of the County Championship and although he played against Mid Kerry in Round 2, his right quad was heavily strapped and he didn’t seem to be operating at 100%. Kenmare will be sweating on his status ahead of the final. They have shown us that they’re far more than just a oneman team but a fully fit Seán O’Shea can be a complete game-changer. When Stacks have been good this year, they’ve been very good. They were terrific against Legion and they staged

| Verdict: Austin Stacks by one.

an incredible fightback against Crokes, even if the latter showing ultimately ended in disappointment. It’s difficult to predict how they’re going to line out against Kenmare. Their team has been quite fluid, especially in the forwards where important players like Darragh O’Brien and Shane O’Callaghan have dipped in and out of the starting line-up. The big question for Wayne Quillinan is what to do with Seán Quilter. The burly target man was sensational off the bench against Crokes, kicking five points at vital stages of the game. Quilter had a quiet enough group phase but now he has surely put his hand up for a starting berth. Joe O’Connor and Brendan O’Sullivan have been very impressive in the middle for Stacks and their battle with Kenmare’s O’Sullivans will have a massive bearing on the game. It’s hard to see either team tearing away with this match. It could go right down to the wire.

After a brief hiatus to sort out the small matter of the opening rounds of the County Championship, the Kerry Senior Club Championship is back this Sunday and it promises to be a huge day of high drama for all four clubs still involved. Will Kenmare capitilise on their remarkable campaign to date and prevail in the final, or will the holders, Austin Stacks, retain their title? Will the newcomers, Templenoe, have a second year of senior football to look forward to, or will Kilcummin escape by the skin of their teeth for the second year on the bounce? All will be decided by a mouthwatering double-header at the Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney. These matches will be played behind closed doors in line with government restrictions but thankfully they will both be streamed live by Kerry GAA.

SENIOR CLUB RELEGATION PLAYOFF ___________________________________________________________________________________

Kilcummin v Templenoe SUNDAY AT 1.30PM FITZGERALD STADIUM

Avoiding relegation back down to Intermediate would have been the goal for both of these clubs heading into the 2020 season and the good news is that it’s still in their own hands. The bad news, of course, is that they can’t both stay up. Kilcummin will, as always, scrap for their lives and they have the forwards to pose Templenoe problems, but you would have to worry for them after

that recent result, and performance, against Mid Kerry. On the one hand, they’re unlikely to play as poorly again. On the other, it may have left a significant dent in their confidence. Templenoe, meanwhile, have more of a spring in their step after they exceeded expectations in the County Championship. That could prove to be the difference on Sunday.

Fantasy champ to be crowned

Relegation playoff could prove crucial

KEYMAN: Killian Spillane of Templenoe.

Crowley of Kenmare in pole position

The winner of the inaugural Killarney Advertiser Fantasy Club game in association with Gaelic Plus will be crowned on Sunday and things are looking good for runaway leader John Crowley, who has built up a commanding lead heading into the final round of fixtures. Kenmare native Crowley is currently 65 points clear of Philip O’Connor of Dr Crokes, with Graham O’Connor of Castleisland close behind in third. Things are tight enough thereafter with just 31 points separating DJ Murphy of Gneeveguilla (fourth) and Conor Healy of Rathmore (tenth). Among the chasing pack is Killarney Legion and Kerry star James O’Donoghue and he has a decent chance of finishing amongst the prizes. He finds himself in sixth place, 27 points off a top three finish. Dr Crokes are the best represented club in the top 20 (eight managers) followed by Legion (three) and Gneeveguilla (two). The third place finisher in the Killarney Advertiser Fantasy Club game will win a Gaelic Plus-branded hoodie, training jersey and leisure shorts; the runner-up will win 20 pairs of club-crested football gloves; and the overall winner gets the grand prize, a brand new set of jerseys for his or her GAA club.

DAN MCCARTHY

In terms of fantasy picks, there’s no denying who the star of the show has been so far. Dan McCarthy of Kenmare Shamrocks has been the main man for many of the top managers in the league, mainly because he was listed as a back but has lined out in the forwards. This has resulted in a huge points tally for the Shamrocks man, most notably in Round 3 when he kicked 1-4 from play against Dr Crokes (56 points). The bad news for John Crowley and Philip O’Connor is that McCarthy sustained a significant injury while hurling and he played no part in Kenmare’s Kerry Senior Football Championship campaign. This may present an opportunity to the few players in the top 10 who do not have McCarthy on their teams; if one of their backs can manage to post a big score on Sunday, they could sneak back into contention.

LOWER

Of course, managers’ totals will be lower this weekend than they were in previous rounds as players from Dr Crokes, Rahilly’s, Dingle and Killarney Legion are no longer involved. Now, only players from the finalists (Kenmare and Austin Stacks) and the teams lining out in the relegation playoff (Kilcummin and Templenoe) can score. The number of active players each man-

ager has will be crucial. The leader, for example, has lost eight of his 15 players, but the majority of the top 10 have lost even more. Some managers only have four players remaining, which will naturally affect their chances of moving up the leaderboard. Lower placed managers who thought ahead and selected multiple players from Templenoe and Kilcummin (anticipating that they might get an extra

Kilcummin’s Noel Duggan has been a consistent fantasy performer thus far and he could be one to look out for this weekend. For Templenoe, key forward Killian Spillane is always capable of registering a high score. Best of luck to all of our competitors in the final game week of the season.

Adam Moynihan previews this weekend's semi-final match-ups in the Kerry Senior Football Championship East Kerry forward David Clifford is out of this evening’s Kerry Senior Football Championship semi-final versus St Brendan’s after his onematch suspension was upheld at a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday night. The Fossa man had hoped that the red card he picked up in the closing stages of the quarter-final clash against St Kieran’s would be rescinded on appeal. However, after reviewing the available evidence, the County Board backed referee Jonathan Griffin’s initial decision to send Clifford off for striking/attempting to strike with the leg. This infringement carries an automatic one-game ban so if the defending champions are to navigate the challenge of St Brendan’s, they will have to do it without the services of their best player. Clifford is naturally a massive loss. The Kerry captain was hugely influential in 2019 as East Kerry bridged a 20-year gap to raise the Bishop Moynihan trophy, perhaps most notably in the semi-final against tonight’s opponents when he kicked 0-9. East Kerry’s talisman was the difference-maker that day last October, scoring seven marvelous points from play as Jerry O’Sullivan’s side ran out four-point winners. His absence this time out will naturally come as a significant boost to St Brendan’s morale but if there’s anything East Kerry aren’t lacking, it’s strength in depth. With Darragh Roche, Evan Cronin and Paudie Clifford all capable of finding the target, Brendan’s will still have their hands full in Austin Stack Park this evening. And the divisional side from Tralee and its environs have plenty to offer going forward themselves. Victory for Celtic in league final Victory for Celtic in league final Hoops beat old rivals Athletic to secure three-in-a-row

KERRY PREMIER A LEAGUE FINAL ___________________________________________________________________________________

Killarney Celtic

Two goals either side of half-time proved crucial as Killarney Celtic overcame neighbours Killarney Athletic to win the Denny Premier A league final on Sunday. Athletic were considered rank outsiders for this one but they succeeded in frustrating their rivals for the majority of the first period before a goal from a set piece eventually broke their resolve. The Celts notched a killer second within minutes of the restart and goals three and four added some gloss to the score-

line as they secured their third league title on the bounce. With the finals of the Greyhound Bar KO Cup and the League Cup still to play it’s shaping up to be a fruitful end to the season for the club from Derreen.

honey rose highest at the back post to nod home a powerful header in the 38th minute. The goal came at a great time for Celtic, who had been bossing the possession stats without creating as many clear-cut opportunities as manager Brian Spillane would have liked.

At 1-0, Athletic were still very much in contention but conceding a second immediately after the interval came as a crushing a blow, especially considering the unfortunate manner in which it came about. As Blues midfielder Jack Cooper went to tackle Celtic winger Shane Lowth near the edge of the penalty area, he was inadvertently obstructed by the referee, which allowed Lowth to advance unchallenged and fire a fine shot beyond the reach of Gary Sugrue in the Athletic goal. It was a freak incident and one that left the Killarney Athletic players exasperated but technically no laws had been broken so the referee was left with no other choice but to award the goal. With their hardworking midfield triumvirate of Donal Kelliher, Tadhg Doolan and Jack Cooper leading the way, the team from Woodlawn never gave up and halftime substitute Shane Lynch came close

to pulling one back around the hour mark. Unfortunately for him, his low shot went wide via the left-hand upright and his Celtic counterpart Ryan Kelliher sealed the result in the 70th minute when he rounded the keeper before rolling the ball into the empty goal. Kelliher doubled his personal tally late on by capitalising on a defensive error as Celtic capped their 2020/21 league campaign with a 4-0 win over the old enemy. The final score was perhaps a little harsh on this young Athletic team, although there was no denying that Celtic were the better side on the day and were fully deserving of their victory. The sides will meet again this coming Sunday in the final of the prestigious Greyhound Bar KO Cup. Kick-off in Tralee is at the later than usual time of 5.30pm. MEK celebrate finest year to date

| By Eamonn Fitzgerald

Eamonn Fitzgerald charts the rise of MEK Galaxy, a club formed to cater for the young soccer players of Mid and East Kerry In a recent issue of On the Ball I wrote about the development of soccer in the Killarney area. It was often a struggle to get started due to the intransigence of a small few diehard GAA stalwarts, upholding Rule 27 of the GAA, or The Ban, as it was better known. This was particularly true for Killarney Athletic, who met stubborn resistance and almost caused the transfer of a young guard from Killarney to a North Kerry station. A timely and correct intervention saved the day and Killarney Athletic got going. Other clubs got underway such as Killarney Celtic. What an outstanding achieve-

ment by them in recent weeks winning a national title in style. I am delighted to hear that the club is to get a civic reception from the local town council. And so they should; the town council did likewise for Dr Crokes when they won their first All-Ireland Club title in 1992. Other clubs such as Mastergeeha, Ballyhar Dynamos and Fossa also flourished. MEK GALAXY The most recent soccer club to get going is MEK Galaxy (Mid & East Kerry). MEK merged with Cedar Galaxy so that together they they can provide games from juvenile right through to senior level. MEK was founded in 2014 and it plays out of the community field in Fossa, primarily to give youngsters of Fossa, Beaufort and Milltown a chance to play soccer. That is a nice link with Fossa AFC, which no longer functions. That club spawned out of a bunch of workmates from Liebherr led by

PLANS Plans for the future include purchasing a pitch of their own to call home base, increase membership and continue to offer a friendly and inclusive club for all. Killarney post big score in Round 1 Following a tough pre-season regime, Killarney RFC seniors’ McElligott Cup first round fixture on a well presented pitch at Aghadoe was a welcome sight in current circumstances, albeit in front of notably sparse sidelines. With COVID-19 measures in place, Killarney and Castleisland kicked off the 2020/21 season as both teams headed for unchartered territory. For Killarney, with a new coaching group at the helm, it was a chance to see if pre-season preparations could be put into practice. Credit to the visitors who stuck to the task for the full 80 minutes, but as the evening unfolded, it was the hosts who made the most of their dominant possession, using powerful, well-supported line breaks with ball in hand to put a large number of points on the board. At the other end, Island slotted some penalty kicks to add to their tally, however, with new emphasis on the breakdown now, Killarney will want to ensure those penalties are minimised in future endeavours. Work has clear-

great versatility and team spirit to also fill in at hooker. In fact, he ended the game in the centre, capping a fine performance with a well-taken try in the last move of the match. Brendan Fuller also made a positive influence on proceedings, not only kicking well off the tee but also forming part of a strong back three, all of whom enjoyed attacking returns. A special mention must go to the referee too, who communicated with both sides effectively throughout.

particular those who made their full debut for the seniors today, but we need to be consistent over the entire campaign. “Our thanks to Castleisland, especially for taking the COVID restrictions seriously. We wish them all the best for the upcoming season.” Socially distant training will continue for Killarney on Mondays at 7.30pm and Thursdays at 8pm in Aghadoe. New players always welcome.

Top-flight English football makes its return tomorrow afternoon and with it comes the hugely popular Fantasy Premier League game. Last week the team at the Killarney Advertiser confirmed that we will once again be running our own fantasy league and the good news is that there’s still time to enter. Simply visit fantasy.premierleague.com or download the FPL app, select your team and join the biggest league in Kerry by using the entry code 7pwwg6. Once again the league has simply been renewed from last year, so for last season’s participants all you have to do is pick your players. You will then be automatically entered into the Killarney Advertiser League for the forthcoming campaign. The deadline for picking your team is tomorrow (Saturday) at 11am.

RULES

For those unfamiliar with how the game works, here are some of the basic rules: Managers have a budget of £100m to spend on an initial squad of 15 players. A squad consists of two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards. A maximum of three players can be chosen from any one Premier League club. Managers must choose a starting 11 from their 15-man squad before each Gameweek deadline. 0 Points are awarded to players for goals, assists, saves and clean sheets. Players can also earn additional bonus points if they are among the top performers in the Bonus Points System (BPS) in a match.

FREE

Last season over 900 players took part in the free-to-enter Killarney Advertiser League and with more fantastic prizes on offer courtesy of our sponsors Brian James, we are hoping to attract even more participants for the 2020/21 season. A €50 voucher will be awarded every month to the highest-scoring manager and the overall winner next May will collect the grand prize of a voucher for €250. We wish all of our participants the best of luck.
