Emma’s Voice Shamed The Establishment The late Emma Mhic Mhathuna pictured on May 19th 2018 near her home in Ballydavid in West Kerry with the Three Sister Hills and the Atlantic Ocean in the background. Pic: Don MacMonagle

Words: Anne Lucey you like is what came to mind in this region devoid of natural shelter. In the simple, plain church, so simple it was almost Methodist. There was the shelter of people and this above all this is what Emma Mhic Mhathúna and her children found in the Corca Dhuibhne Gaeltacht. In Baile na nGall for just over a year, before her illness returned, people had taken her to their heart. They enjoyed the Dublin woman’s love of Irish, and her love of music and laughter, and her lovely children and the way she immersed herself in everything from food to football. And in her long hours of need in the past months, they gave huge practical help, from cooking to house cleaning. They supported and rallied round the lone, witty and competent mother battling for Ireland. Emma defied the victim cliché, the si-

V

If we were poetic anymore, or believed in the thing called pathetic fallacy, and looked to Heavens and nature to mirror our situation, we would have said the ferocious wind hurling itself at the doors of the church and the grey black skies down on the earth were weeping for the 37-yearold mother and her five children in Sáipéal na Carraige. You could, if you wanted, see the spirit of anger in the wind too. Maybe like the anger women cut down in their prime feel. The way women generally feel about an Irish health system that has missed them, and messed them and their mothers about. But reflecting on the fear filled occasion, what struck me most was not anger, or poetry, but the old run of the mill nath cainte:‘Faoi scáth a chéile a mhairimid”- the old saying or cliché if

Book Of Condolence

Words: Anne Lucey

Kerry County Council has opened a Book of Condolence for the late Emma Mhic Mhathúna (RIP). The Book of Condolence is available to members of the public at the main reception of County Buildings, Rathass, Tralee during office hours. A Book of Condolence will also be opened this morning at Leabharlann an Daingin.

lent accepting suffering which the HSE who administer our health system have come to expect as par for the course from Irish women. Sick and very sick, she might have had her rosary beads in one hand, but Emma put on her red dress, her red lipstick and took them on. The tools to speak out were next door and she used them: it was on Radio na Gaeltachta she gave her first interview on May 1st, in the language she loved. In west Kerry, there was not just practical but emotional support too, this was quite clear from the women of her own age who became her close friends. There was spiritual succour– the strong faith that had sustained her throughout her life was there for her at the end, Fr Eoghan O’Cadhla pointed out. The red and pink Fuschia, or the Deora Dé, the tears of God, was carried to the

altar: but it was the people who were crying on Tuesday, the congregation was told. And that was it: ar deireadh an lae, it was not the TV or the big cameras, or the appearances or the visit of the president – it was the people of west Kerry who had held her close, held her hand and held her up and men and women encouraged her to speak, in the language she loved. And what I took from the funeral was this: for the new Irish woman, it is no longer a case of offering it up or hoping the heavens may blow our way and reflect our grief : the people are allowing others to speak out and supporting each other in ways that allows this necessary speech. Above all here is a new generation of free speech amongst women - and the thirty something’s are a new force to be reckoned with.

A Voice For Women “I just wanted to make a change for the other women in Ireland so this can never happen again.” “I don’t even know if my little baby is going to remember me”.

London Kerry Person Of The Year Announced

Vincent and Breeda Harty.

Vincent Harty has been named as the Kerry Person of the year 2018 by the London Kerry Association. The Ballinaskelligs native has been selected as a mark of his huge contribution to the life of people in both Kerry and London. He is the long-standing treasurer of the Kerry London Association having been a part of the original group set up in the 1970s and remains actively committed to the good works of the association today. Vince will be presented with the Dennis Reidy Memorial trophy at the association’s gala dinner dance at The Crown Hotel in Cricklewood on Friday 19th October. He will be joined on the evening by his wife Breda, daughters Sheila, Deirdre, Orla and Niamh along with son-in-laws and his eight grandchildren. Next year will mark Vincent’s 60th year in London. He arrived at the age of 16 and started working as a barman at The Brewery Tap in Barking. Vince says he was over the moon when he received the call from Dan Tim O’Sullivan the chairman of KAL notifying him of his recognition. He said: “I am 75 years old and feel so honoured to receive this award. It’s a reward that has been given to wonderful Kerry man and women in the past. I would like to accept this with gratitude and for all those who have gone in the past with their works of goodness and kindness” Monika Dukarska from Killorglin has been nominated as Young Kerry person of the year and will receive the Christy Kissane Memorial Trophy on the night. She is a World Champion rower and has represented Ireland on several occasions including at this year’s championships in Bulgaria where she and teammate Aileen Crowley won the double-scull C-final. The Christy Kissane Memorial Trophy is presented each year to a new generation of Kerry people, in London or Kerry, in memory of the great Kilorglin and Kilburn man who passed away three years ago. Past winners include members of the Kerry minor five in a row football team and Gaelic football legend Colm Cooper. The celebrations continue on Saturday night chairman Dan Tim O’Sullivan’s traditional fundraiser for St Joseph’s nursing home in Killorglin set to take place at the Catholic Church of St Mary and St Andrew in Dollis Hill. Tickets for the Kerry Association London dinner and dance are available from Tara Cronin on 0044 7939 017022 or any committee member.

Killarney Housing Crisis Continues Words: Anne Lucey

We can provide headquarters for Facebook and Google, but the basic need of humans for shelter seems beyond us. That budget accommodation we expected from the budget is not to be. Instead there was the fiver a week giveaway to the blue rinse voter that supports Fine Gael, and to hell with the students and the young. An election looms… and power must be secured. It is very cynical and Fianna Fail – although architects of the crisis in the first place, must have completely lost their soul propping this up a decade later. There are solutions on our doorsteps. Last week with the council in Dublin looking at cruise ships to house the homeless, and the navy in Cork having to sleep in their ships in the harbour, I asked the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht was it reasonable to have so many unused and perfectly good houses owned by the State lying empty in and around Killarney? I refer of course to the dozen or so homes owned by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and which lie empty now. Most of these are in fine condition and until recently were permanent homes. Could these not be used for social and affordable housing or just simply rented out to local people?

However, the Department tell me No, and there will be no budging. Some of the houses and picturesque cottages are outside the main park area on main roads, and are in good condition. While two or three have been put to use as temporary residences for artist in programmes, others are used intermittently if at all. No part of the huge property portfolio of tens of thousands of hectares of recreational land across the country managed by the NPWS will be used as housing by the new land development agency, the Department has also said. The land is for use as nature reserves or heritage parks or protected areas, all of which are classed as “recreational”. (The six national parks alone comprise almost 70,000 hectares) The old estates like Muckross have a number of historic cottages and outbuildings in various states of repair and “development of such properties is constrained given their location within areas designated as National Parks, Nature Reserves, Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Areas,” it said. Where feasible, such properties are used to provide staff or visitor facilities in congruence with the Department’s statutory conservation remit. So that door is closed, and it seems bizarre because I wonder what is “constrained” about letting perfectly good houses to people badly in need of shelter?

Budget 2019 No Surprises In Budget 2019

16

12.10.18

The 2019 budget speech was well flagged in the media in the days leading up the budget and as such there was very little that surprised in this budget according to Michael Culloty of Orchid Accountants. Most observers believe the budget was in line with expectations. However, a number of

vious restricted mortgage interest relief rates had been reduced in last year’s budgets and an indication had been given that these restrictions would be removed in years to come. This budget has merely sped up this removal.

Key Points 1) Income Tax •

There was a small reduction in the highest rate of USC of 4.75% where this will fall by 0.25% to 4.50%. This rate of USC targets incomes in the €19,300-€70,000 range. They have also ensured anyone who benefits from the higher hourly wage will not fall into a higher rate of USC by increasing the 2% rate band. • The minimum wage has increased to €9.80. This increase will be welcome by many, an extra 0.25c an hour on the previous minimum wage of €9.55. • There was an increase in the cut-off point at which people hit the 40% rate of tax. This was increased by €750. Originally the highest cut-off point was €34,550 for single earners (From Jan 2019 -€35,300). For people with an annual gross income in excess of €34,550, this will mean a €150 annual tax saving. For married one earner couples this was increased from €43,550 to €44,300. • The level of weekly income for the higher rate of PRSI will be increased by €10 from €376 to €386. • Income tax credits that received an increase: Home Carer Tax Credit increased from €1,200 to €1,500. Earned Income Tax Credit increased from €1,150 to €1,350.

3) Environment •

• •

2) Other Tax •

• •

• • •

There was a regular 0.50c excise duty on tobacco products which will be put into effect on 09/10/2018. For the consumer the increase means a pack of 20 cigarettes will now cost €12.70. Betting/gambling duties have been increased from 1%-2% for all bookmakers & from 15%25% on the commission earned by betting intermediaries. The 9% VAT rate for the hospitality sector is being scrapped, to be replaced by an increased 13.5%. The government is hoping to raise €466 million from this measure. The intention is to put €35 million back in to support the tourism sector. Inheritance tax, otherwise known as Capital Acquisitions Tax, has seen the Group A threshold increase by €10,000. A child can now get inheritances worth up to €320,000 tax free from a parent, previously €310,000. Anything above this is taxable at 33%. 9% VAT for newspapers to stay in place, reduction in VAT for online publications from 23% to 9%. A small reduction was applied to tax on interest (DIRT). The DIRT rate was reduced from 37% to 35%. This is in line with the Governments plan to reduce DIRT to 33% by 2020. From 2019 onwards buy to let investors will be able to offset 100% of their mortgage interest repayments against rental income. The pre-

lobby groups have come out strongly against the VAT increase from 9% to 13.5%. The tourism industry in particular is very vocal against the increase. Killarney businesses will be deeply affected by the increase. Michael Culloty has highlighted main announcements for the Killarney Advertiser.

Measures to try and promote hybrid/electric vehicles. A 1% VRT surcharge on diesel vehicles registered in the state from 01/01/2019. The VRT rebate offered for hybrids & plug in hybrids has been extended until the end of 2019. The 0% Benefit-in-kind rate for electric cars is being extended for a 3 year period, however a cap of €50,000 has placed on the original market value of the vehicle. This incentive for the purchase of electric vehicles in Ireland. The highly flagged increase in the carbon tax did not materialize in this budget, however the Minister did set out his intention to increase this tax over the next 11 years to 2030. When discussing the Agricultural sector, the Minister acknowledged the “difficult year for farmer” that 2018 had been. He announced the “income averaging” will now be available to farmers with “off-farm” income. This is aimed at farmer wishing to average their farm profit over a 5-year period to cope with the volatility currently being experienced in the agricultural sector. Current reliefs available under “stock-relief” and “young trained farmer” were extended for a further 3 years. Further schemes aimed at improving carbon efficiency of beef production will also be rolled out.

4) Social Welfare •

• •

One of the main points to note was an increase in all Social Welfare payments. Paschal announced that all Welfare payments would be getting an increase of €5 a week from next year on. This means that the weekly rate of State Pension will increase from €243.30 to €248.30 per week from March 2019. This will come with proportionate increases for qualified adults and those on reduced rates. The Christmas bonus for December 2018 is to be restored to 100% for pensioners and Social Welfare recipients, up from 85%. Two weeks paid parental leave to every parent of a child under one year old from November 2019. His intention to increase to this leave to 7 weeks over a certain number of years was highlighted, but details were not specified. There is also a €25 increase in the back to school allowance.

5) Other Points Of Interest • •

There was an increase of €1.05 billion in health funding which is to be divided amongst many different areas in the health industry. The Government introduced many measures to combat the current housing crisis. They in-

• • • •

creased an existing housing program by €470 million, introduced €1.25 billion to social housing in 2019 with the hopes of creating 10,000 new social homes. €60 million in extra spending, which much of it is thought to be targeted towards emergency accommodation. Changes to the support received to pay for childcare were also mentioned in the budget. The rates at which people can avail of the Affordable Childcare Scheme were adjusted, the base rate was increased from €22,700 to €26,000 and the threshold was also increased from €47,500 to €60,000. Increased the Garda budget by €80 million, most of which (€63.5 m) is for the recruitment of new members. €286 million for roads and other transport infrastructure around the country, and a further €40 million to repair regional and local roads and footpaths. €57 million to the Department of Agriculture to support the sector and farmers in disadvantaged areas primarily. A 1.5 billion ‘Rainy day fund’ was announced by the Minister which has been set aside to be used in the event of some form of a substantial economic shock, and take some of the stress off areas worst hit. Another point of interest was the exit tax that the Government applied to companies who seek to transfer assets offshore and in turn leave the scope of Irish tax. There is now a 12.5% exit tax on companies who seek to do this, which is an incentive for these companies to keep their operation in Ireland, and in turn encourage them to invest in Ireland in the future.

Conclusion

The economy is enjoying a period of sustained growth and all budget projections are based on a continuation of growth beyond 2020. There are several key issues that could derail having a balanced budget by 2020. The foremost concern is Brexit. While individual companies are making plans, an existing vacuum of political decision making must be of grave concern. There is a lot of discussion regarding diversification from our reliance on the UK, but 35% of our tourist numbers still come from the UK, and 86% of our freight traffic moves via the UK. 55% of our fuel is imported via the UK. While all these can over time be diverted to other EU countries there is an obvious delay in this being organized and it will have a cost adjustment which will affect Irish economic sustainability.

Budget 2019 Reaction Killarney Chamber of Commerce & Tourism

Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce today expressed their disappointment with what they described as a ‘short-sighted’ decision to return the VAT on the tourism sector to 13.5%. “It is a pity that an initiative, which was such a success in terms of job creation is now withdrawn and it will, undoubtedly have a negative impact on the sector” remarked Paul O’Neill, President of the Killarney Chamber.

Vitners

Padraig Cribben, Chief Executive, VFI states: “Removing the 9% VAT rate in today’s Budget is a kick in the teeth for the hospitality sector. It will introduce uncertainty and undermine confidence in many pubs selling food who are already worried about their exposure to the effects of Brexit. Publicans in areas of the country where the recovery is weak will be disproportionately affected.

Irish Hotel Federation

Niamh O’Shea, Chair of the IHF Kerry branch said the increase is a serious jolt to the tourism industry in Ireland and represents a reckless failure to recognise its economic potential and importance, particularly to rural Ireland. “Today’s short-term budget fix will have long-term implications for an important indigenous export industry and rural Ireland in particular.”

INMO

General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha said: “With over 500 patients waiting on trolleys today, the

health service is unable to cope. Years of underinvestment have taken their toll, so today’s extra funding is welcome and much needed. We will seek to meet with the HSE to ensure that their service plan provides for additional nurses and midwives.

Michael Healy-Rae

Retail Excellence Ireland

IPOA Chairman, Stephen Faughnan, said that the restoration of mortgage interest relief to 100% as of 1st January 2019 was “a small start” on the long road of encouraging private landlords to either stay, or invest further, in the sector.

CEO of Retail Excellence, Lorraine Higgins said: “On balance, Budget 2019 is ambitious and aims to give hope to most. However more imaginative and targeted supports are needed to insulate the retail industry and the thousands of jobs it supports. Retail Excellence will continue to work with our members, the government and Oireachtas members to ensure such supports are supported and secured into the future.”

Retailers Again Smuggling

RAS spokesperson Benny Gilsenan: “Today’s decision is another slap in the face to retailers that have been compliant with every decision made by this Government. We want more resources to be given to Revenue to protect businesses from illicit trade in tobacco, alcohol and solid fuel.”

The National Off-Licence Association (NOffLA)

NOFLA has today criticised the Government’s decision not to decrease excise duty on alcohol in Budget 2019. Evelyn Jones, Government Affairs Director of NOffLA stated; “Increases in excise duty were emergency measures, implemented in times of economic need. Ireland’s economy is now the fastest growing in Europe, and so like USC and other emergency measures, these must be rolled back.”

“Having a Minister for Tourism in Kerry clearly doesn’t mean a lot” Michael Healy-Rae on increase in tourism VAT rate in Budget 2019

Irish Property Owners’ Association

Active Retirement Ireland

Peter Kavanagh, Head of Communications and Public Affairs at Active Retirement Ireland, said: “The full restoration of the Christmas Bonus is a welcome measure. We are glad older people will be able to enjoy Christmas 2018 to its fullest, with a double payment to help with their Christmas shopping and to allow them socialise with family and friends.”

Society of Irish Motor Industry

Motor industry react to increase of VRT on the registration of diesel cars, SIMI Director General Alan Nolan said: “This was a poorly considered measure that appears to have been included to give the perception of an environmental focus in the Budget. Concerns about diesel centre on air quality in cities but city-based car buyers have already moved away from buying new diesel cars, the Dublin diesel share having reduced from 70% in 2014 to 51% this year. The bigger impact here will be on rural and business buyers for whom diesel is still the better environmental choice.”

The 2nd Memorial, Eileen Rice Country Against Cancer event will take place at the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney from October 26-28. I wanted to run this event and also to celebrate her life while giving back to the people who helped her,” Jerry said. “One of her mantras was that life is for living and this weekend celebrates all that she loved,” Tickets can be purchased at the venue, from the INEC box office on 064-6671555 or by calling Jerry Moriarty directly on 0879182053. BUDGET CHANGES There were in fact very few changes in Budget 2019 in respect of taxes which would affect a transfer of ownership of properties. In respect of Stamp Duty, the rates remained the same at 1% for Residential Property at 6% for Non-Residential Property. The Stamp Duty Relief for Young Trained Farmers has in fact however been extended until 2021. This Relief had been due to expire at the end of this year and has been given a further three year extension. The tax-free threshold for gifts and inheritances between parents and children has seen a modest increase of €10,000.00 seeing in the Group A threshold increasing €310,000.00 to €320,000.00. There were no further changes to CAT rates or to the Capital Gains Tax rates.

The major Reliefs such as Agricultural Relief, Business Relief, Entrepreneur Relief, Farm Reconstruction/ Consolidation Relief have been left unamended. Stock Relief has been extended for three years until the end of 2021. There are three separate measures, the 25% General Stock Relief on Income Tax, the 50% Stock Relief on Income Tax on registered farm partnerships and 100% Stock Relief on Income Tax for certain young trained farmers. Milltown Community Award For Owen O’Shea

V

Milltown’s “Stephen Lawlor Community Award” was presented to Owen O’Shea at a surprise ceremony in The Plough Bar on Saturday. For a man always impeccably prepared for everything he’s involved in, it was unusual to see him ‘caught on the hop’ and at a loss for words. Owen was congratulated by M.C. Maurice Harmon and Milltown Chamber Alliance’s Cultural Officer Vincent Prendergast. Mr Prendergast outlined Owen’s lifetime of volunteerism with many groups, including the Credit Union, Comhaltas and politics, and noted how Owen’s vision and leadership inspired the many community projects and events in which he has been involved. His most recent success was chairing the 2018 County Fleadh Cheoil, injecting energy and variety into a local festival of traditional music and free family entertainment. Three major concerts were organised, including the unique solstice celebration at the Killaclohane Portal Tomb. Owen thanked the organising committee, and spoke about Stephen Lawlor, after whom the award is named, and how Stephen was the epitome of community spirit and volunteerism. “He was an exemplary community member, working hard with various local groups including the Tidy Towns and Comhaltas”, explained Owen. He also thanked Stephen’s mother, Ann Lawlor, who provided the perpetual trophy and travelled from her home in

Longford to present the award. Stephen passed away in 2013 and is remembered in Milltown through this award. This year Owen joins previous recipients, local volunteers Willie Hanafin, Denis O’Mahony and Tom Hanafin, as a worthy winner. Owen also spoke about the huge community spirit in Milltown, especially visible at this year’s Fleadh. “My work as chairman was made easy by the team of over one hundred local volunteers”, he said, and added “I’ve enjoyed all my community work, and I love the meetings and the

craic at events. It’s great to be out, doing something positive, building community and meeting new people. The recent culture of individualism needs to be challenged and we must reach out to people and help them feel part of a strong and supportive community.” This has been an important aspect of community work in Milltown, given the dramatic rise in population in recent years. Owen thanked his wife Cecelia for her support in all his involvement, recognising Cecelia’s own voluntary work as Treasurer for the 2018 Fleadh saw her head a team that raised the €70,000 to host the event and provide over €12,000 worth of free entertainment in Milltown. Owen also remembered the late Denis Courtney, who worked tirelessly for the community and Owen said it was his mission to organise “one hell of a Fleadh” in Denis’s memory. Hosts at The Plough Bar, Denis and Bernie Griffin, provide a commemorative trophy for the event and this was presented to Owen. Celebrations continued with traditional music and song from Owen’s fellow musicians and many friends. As well as his voluntary and professional commitments, Owen is also the author of several books, the latest of which is “A Century of Politics in the Kingdom: A County Kerry Compendium”, co-written with Gordon Revington, and goes on sale this month.

Transition Year – A ‘Doss’ Year? Words: Ailbhe Gammell

I am a transition year student in St Brigid’s Secondary School in Killarney and I have decided to do the transition year program not to take as a ‘doss’ year but to take it as an opportunity to try new things and to help me decide what job I would like in the future. It is only October and so far the weeks have been jam-packed with activities and I have thus far not been bored! Between going surfing in Inch beach, going up to Tullamore for the annual Ploughing Championships and receiving many interesting talks about nutrition, public-speaking and more I have certainly not been short of things to do. Students that study French will be heading off to Paris at the end of this month and students that study Spanish visited Madrid in September and they had an unforgettable time. We are also currently preparing for a Variety Show which we will be performing before Mid-term so we are all very excited for that. This year I also have the chance to go on work experience and I hope that this will help me to decide what job I would be interested in for the future, as at the moment I am unsure. If you are on the fence about deciding whether or not you want to do Transition Year, I would definitely say go for it. This year give you the opportunity to experience things you might never have before and to take a break from the pressure and piles of homework given to you from teachers! After a stressful year of studying for the Junior Certificate, a break was well needed and I am very glad I have the opportunity to take part in the Transition Year program this year.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Pope Compares Abortion To Hiring A Hitman In one of his harshest criticisms of abortion, Pope Francis has compared the procedure to “hiring a hitman to resolve a problem”. The pontiff told his weekly general audience at St Peter’s Square that “a contradictory approach to life allows the suppression of human life in the mother’s womb in order to safeguard other values”. He added: “How can an act that suppresses an innocent and helpless life as it blossoms be therapeutic, civil or, simply, humane?” He went on to tell the audience that “it is not right” to take a human life, no matter how small. Women’s groups in Italy have been fighting to ensure safe access to abortion amid a growing campaign from far-right politicians and anti-abortion groups to impose restrictions on the procedure or ban it completely. Councillors in Verona, which is led by the far-

right League party, last week declared the northern Italian city “pro-life”, passing an initiative that would “prevent abortion and promote motherhood” by funding anti-abortion groups, as well as promoting a project that would enable women to anonymously give up their babies for adoption. The motion was put forward in May to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Italy’s vote to legalise abortion. Despite the law, it is extremely difficult for women to access a safe abortion as more than 70% of gynaecologists refuse to terminate pregnancies for moral reasons. Shortly after becoming pontiff in 2013, Francis appeared to be cultivating a softer stance towards issues such as abortion and homosexuality, saying that the Catholic church must move on from such arguments and “heal wounds” while focussing instead on “compassion and mercy”.

Trump Corner

‘Dynamite’ Ivanka Trump Declines Possible UN Role There is no one more qualified “in the world” to become the next US ambassador to the United Nations than Ivanka Trump, her father Donald has claimed. Speaking to the media on the White House lawn, the US president described his second child as “dynamite”. He told reporters that he has heard the 36-year-old’s name discussed for the post, but said if he selected her he’d be accused of nepotism. The position became available after Nikki Haley announced she would be resigning from the roleand will be leaving the administration by the end of 2018. Discussing potential replacements, Mr Trump appeared enthusiastic about his daughter’s suitability for the position, saying: “I’ve heard Ivanka, how good would Ivanka be? “It has nothing to

do with nepotism but people who know know that Ivanka would be dynamite. I’d be accused of nepotism even if there’s no one more competent in the world.” Despite her father’s recommendation, Ms Trump later ruled herself out of the role. In a tweet she said her father will “nominate a formidable replacement for Ambassador Haley”. She added: “That replacement will not be me.” Her resignation came after weeks of wrangling over the new Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was officially sworn in on Monday. Mr Trump apologised to the embattled judge and his family for “the terrible suffering” they had been been forced to endure as he was sworn in, after earlier claiming that sexual assault allegations against his nominee were “a hoax” brought about “by people who are evil”. The US president said that “under historic scrutiny”, his pick for the nation’s top court was “proven innocent”.

US Woman Removed From Plane After Boarding With ‘Emotional Support’ Squirrel The passenger was brighteyed and bushy-tailed even though it was an evening flight. Literally, as it turned out. The passenger was a squirrel. It hadn’t scampered on to the plane while people or bags were being loaded, or anything like that. A human passenger had brought the squirrel on board with her as her “emotional support animal”. When she refused to leave and take her squirrel with her, the police were called. The woman and the squirrel were removed from the Tuesday evening flight by the police. The passengers all had to disembark and reboard, causing a two-hour delay in the departure of Frontier Airlines flight 1612 from Orlando to Cleveland. Frontier said the passenger had noted in her reservation that she was bringing an emotional support animal – but she did not indicate it was a squirrel. The airline says rodents, including squirrels, are not allowed. The company said the police were called when the passenger refused to leave the plane. Police then requested that the other passengers disembark while officers dealt with the woman, who was eventually escorted into the main terminals.

Hurricane Michael Hits Florida MIAMI – Florida’s Panhandle is littered with evidence that Hurricane Michael is one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the mainland United States. Roofs and awnings are peeled from buildings, pieces of homes are scattered amid snapped trees and downed power lines, chunks of beaches are washed away. Michael thrashed Georgia as a hurricane and eventually weakened to a tropical storm early Thursday as it moved toward the Carolinas, soaking areas that got swamped last month by Hurricane Florence. BY THE NUMBERS — Hurricane history: first Category 4 hurricane to make landfall in Florida’s Panhandle since record-keeping began in 1851. — Top winds: 155 mph (250 kph), strong enough to completely destroy homes and cause weekslong power outages. — Powerful pressure: 919 millibars minimum pressure in the eye, the third most intense hurricane land-

fall in the U.S. in recorded history. — High water: storm surge of 6 feet (2 metres) up to 14 feet (4 metres) forecast for Florida’s Panhandle and Big Bend. — Storm riders: Roughly 375,000 people in Florida warned to evacuate; many refused. — To the rescue: U.S. Coast Guard crews have pulled 27 people from damaged homes along Florida’s coastline. — Staying safe: nearly 6,700 people took refuge in 54 shelters in Florida. — Power outages: More than 932,000 customers in Georgia, Florida, Alabama and South Carolina without power. — Food and water: 2 million readyto-eat meals, 1 million gallons (3.75 million litres) of water and 40,000 10-pound (4.5-kilogram) bags of ice ready for distribution in Florida. — The human cost: A man in Gadsden County, Florida, killed by a falling tree, and an 11-year-old girl in Seminole County, Georgia, killed when a carport blew through the roof of her home.

The Blasphemy Referendum: An International Issue

Words: Lesley Rowe

In 2009, 30 years after it was banned in Ireland and by several local authorities across the UK, Monty Python’s The Life of Brian enjoyed its first public screening in the Welsh town of Aberystwyth. The special screening, attended by Pythons Michael Palin and Terry Jones, was organised by the Mayor of Aberystwyth who, in a strange turn of events, happened to be erstwhile actress Sue Jones-Davies, who starred as Judith Iscariot, Brian’s girlfriend, in the 1979 film. Ireland’s ban was overturned in 1987: the film has been re-rated with a 15 certificate and is now hailed as a classic. Socially and culturally, Ireland has come a long way since 1979. Referendums have removed the constitutional prohibitions on divorce, abortion and samesex marriage (we were the first country in the world to legalise gay marriage by popular vote). Ireland has become multiracial, cosmopolitan, tolerant and increasingly secular. We seemed to have left behind our ‘Down with that sort of thing’ past well-and-truly behind us. Then, three years ago, the Ireland of old came back to haunt us when someone walked into Ennis Garda station to make an accusation of blasphemy against RTÉ, and English TV personality Stephen Fry. Fry had been a guest on the TV programme The Meaning of Life, in which host Gay Byrne asked Fry what he would say to God at the pearly gates. The YouTube video of Fry’s response has been viewed more than 7 million times. An investigation into the alleged offence was brought to a halt when Gardaí failed to find any injured parties. In fact, only one person complained about the programme, and he said he had not been personally offended by the comments, but was simply performing a civic duty. The Defamation Act under which the Stephen Fry complaint was brought dates, surprisingly, from only 2009, and was intended as a stop-gap measure after the existing law, which applied only to Christianity, was deemed to contravene the 1937 Constitution’s guarantee of religious equality. It was considered that a referendum for the sole purpose of removing blasphemy from the constitution would be a time-wasting and expensive exercise. However, now

that the vote will be held in tandem with this month’s Presidential Election, we have the opportunity to remove the word ‘blasphemy’ from Article 40.6.1. In Ireland there has not been a prosecution for blasphemy since 1855. The 2009 Act defines blasphemy as ‘something that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion’. There must be ‘outrage among a substantial number of adherents’, and the offence is punishable with a fine of up to €25,000 euro. As the Fry case showed, the Act as it stands is unworkable. So why bother changing the Constitution? Across the world, 71 countries have laws against blasphemy. Punishments range from fines and imprisonment to public flogging, and even the death penalty. Blasphemy laws, far from protecting religious adherents, are being used as a tool to bully minorities and violate religious freedoms. In August this year a Buddhist woman was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment in Jakarta for complaining about the volume of the call to prayer from her local mosque (despite an appeal on her behalf by Indonesia’s largest Muslim organisation). This week Asia Bibi, a mother of four who is sentenced to hang for making derogatory remarks about Islam, was due to make her

final appeal in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, a country which has cited Ireland’s Defamation Act at the United Nations to support its own blasphemy laws. Even in supposedly secular Europe, seven countries (ourselves, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Malta, Poland and Russia) have anti-blasphemy laws. Yet in 1991 the Law Reform Commission said, ‘there is no place for the offence of blasphemous libel in a society which respects freedom of speech.’ The proposed change will not affect the existing constitutional ban on the publication of ‘seditious or indecent’ matter. Polls suggest that the people of Ireland will vote overwhelming to remove the word ‘blasphemy’ from Article 40.6.1, but, as we all know, polls can be wrong. There is no room for complacency. Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan has said, ‘By removing this provision from our Constitution, we can send a strong message to the world that laws against blasphemy do not reflect Irish values and that we do not believe such laws should exist.’ The Stephen Fry case was widely reported in the international media, and it’s likely that the result of this referendum will also attract significant coverage. That’s why I’ll be voting YES on October 26th.

Spotify has revealed the moststreamed artists in the platform’s 10year history. Drake, followed by Ed Sheeran and Eminem lead its rankings – while Rihanna and Ariana Grande are the only women in its top 10 list. The streaming giant, which launched in Sweden, the UK, France, Spain and Norway in October 2008, has also listed its users’ favourite songs and albums. It named Sheeran’s 2017 single Shape of You as its most-played track. Sheeran’s 2014 single Thinking Out Loud also features, in fifth place. Drake’s 2016 single One Dance comes second, while the Chainsmokers’ Closer, also released in 2016, comes in third. Justin Bieber effectively has three tracks in the top 10. He features on Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s 2017 Despacito remix (coming in at 7), and as a solo artist with Love Yourself (8) and Sorry (9). No female artists have songs in the top

10, however Rihanna became the first artist to reach 1bn streams on Spotify, in 2013. She is the most-streamed female artist globally, followed by Ariana Grande and Sia. Adele and Taylor Swift’s initial resistance to putting their music on Spotify may have contributed to their respective placings at six and seven. Spotify has 180 million monthly active users in 65 countries, whose combined time spent listening to its 40m-plus songs and podcasts and more than 3bn playlists totals 16,858,080 years. The number of artists the average user streams per month has risen on Spotify at an annual average of about 8%. When the service launched a decade ago, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida was the opening month’s most-streamed track and their album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends the most-streamed album. Newcomer Lady Gaga was the biggest artist.

Grateful Family Organise Quiz Fundraiser For Cork Neo Natal Unit

Miracle baby Fionn Lucey Brosan was born weighing just 700 grams in CUH. Less than 3 babies in 10 survive being born this weight. Fionn was immediately admitted to the Neo Natal Unit in Cork University Maternity Hospital where he spent 168 days. “To say we will be forever grateful to the nurses, doctors and staff in the Neo Natal Unit doesn’t describe our gratitude, for without them we wouldn’t have our beautiful son Fionn,” said mother Denice Lucey, Killarney. On Friday the 19th October family are holding a charity event in aid of Cork University Maternity Hospital’s Neonatal Unit and Bru Columbanas at K Town Bar, Killarney. The event on the night kicks off at 8.30 pm and consists of live music from amazing local talent including Tom Lucey, Donal Lucey, Lily MacMonagle, Shannon and Cathal Flaherty. Citroen

Citroen To Celebrate Centenary With Two New Concepts Citroen will celebrate its centenary next year with two special concepts — one that’s claimed to predict the future of urban mobility, the other a car that’s claims to demonstrate its forthcoming ‘ultra-comfort’ features. Sadly, for those hoping the 100th birthday bash might be the ideal opportunity to wheel out a spiritual successor to one of the brand’s most iconic cars — prepare yourself for disappointment, says the car-maker’s CEO Linda Jackson. “I’m not keen on going retro, mainly because there are so many things to do for the future, so many things to launch, so many new models. “To spend time and effort on doing a 2CV – which I love – no, I’m not convinced.” Instead, as well as the two new concepts, Jackson says Citroen will push ahead with its plans to electrify its full range of vehicles. The first plug-in vehicle to arrive will be in 2020 when a plug-in version of the C5 Aircross will arrive. Like sister brand Peugeot, Citroen small cars based on the CMP platform will be offered with the battery power, while larger vehicles underpinned by the EMP2 architecture — like the C5 Aircross — get plug-in power. Despite the push towards electrification, Citroen’s CEO was quick not to rule out diesel-powered engines. While others drop the controversial fuel from their range, following the fallout caused by Volkswagen’s Dieselgate emissions scandal, Jackson says Citroen will continue to offer diesels until consumer appetite for the fuel dies off.

Mazda Factory Restores Its First MX-5

Mazda has announced it has completed its first factory restoration of a customer’s MX-5. Launched last year in August, according to the car maker, the offer of restoring its small roadster was so oversubscribed, the Hiroshima-based firm had to choose from over 600 applications. The lucky owner to be offered the factory-backed fully-certified restoration was retired tomato farmer Keiji Nishimoto. His 1992 British Racing Green V-Special Eunos-badged roadster, was the first car to undergo a full rebuild

and return to the original factory specification, using OEM parts. According to its delighted owner the freshened-up MX-5 is now good for another 25 years of driving.

Report

The other automotive brands in the top 100 were Land Rover (78), Ferrari (80), MINI (90), Harley-Davidson (93) and, for the first time, Subaru (100). Interbrand says social media analysis played a big part in its latest rankings, and its valuation methodology also factoring in the financial performance, competitive strength, customer loyalty and innovation. There are several annual ‘brand value’ reports, including one by Kantar Millward Brown, but the latest report from Interbrand contradicts another from Brand Finance, which put MercedesBenz above Toyota. “A decade after the global financial crisis, the brands that are growing fastest are those that intuitively understand their customers and make brave iconic moves that delight and deliver in new ways,” said Interbrand’s global CEO, Charles Trevail.

The Top 10

Automotive Brands In The Report Are: V

According to Interbrand‘s annual Best Global Brands report, Toyota is once again the world’s most valuable automotive brand. Interbrand has released what it believes are the world’s top 100 brands by dollar value, and while Silicon Valley alumni Apple, Google and Amazon sit at the top of the list, Toyota’s seventh place is a pretty decent showing. The top 10 overall brands in order were Apple, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, Samsung, Toyota, MercedesBenz, Facebook and McDonalds. However, automotive brands have the highest representation in the top 100, with 16 vehicle brands compared to 13 tech companies and 12 financial service providers. Ford was the only American car-maker in the top 100, while Korean brands Kia and Hyundai both made the grade in 71st and 36th positions respectively.

Children & staff at Maggie’s Montessori preschool were delighted to receive a visit from members of the Garda Síochána Killarney, Gillian O’ Donoghue, Patricia Mayse and Brendan McMahon. This was in conjunction with ‘Beep Beep’ day, reinforcing road safety awareness.

Eileen Tucker representing her late husband Donal and Cllr John Sheahan Mayor of Killarney cutting the tape to unveil the new Defibrillator Telephone Box at Dromhall Woodlawn with Jerry Cronin, Leo O’Connor Heart of Ireland, Bridie Cronin, Cllr Brendan Cronin, Cathal Walshe Katherine Cooper Cronin, Michelle Cooper Galvin and Edwina Duggan Heart of Ireland on Saturday.

Words: Debby Looney

Garden Magic The time for harvesting and reaping rewards is upon us. It is also that time of year that beds become empty again, both in the garden and also the vegetable garden. Something I heartily recommend doing is sowing green manure. This will prevent soil washing away, or becoming too mucky and compacted, as well as preventing nutrients leaching out, while at the same time fertilising your soil. It is a win win for everyone! Green manures are generally annual or herbaceous plants, which have a high germination and growth rate. They can be sown from spring until early autumn, really any time you have a bare patch in the garden, especially the vegetable plot. Green manures are generally dug back into the ground before flowering, where they add to the nutrients of the soil. It is an ideal way to keep an area weedfree also. There are several different plants you can sow, in the autumn a fast growing mustard is excellent, when it’s leaves are affected by frost they continue to serve as a mulch. Mustard is also a very good choice to sow

Time To Sow after potatoes, as it causes eelworm cysts to harden, thus causing havoc in their growth cycle. Winter rye is an excellent crop for overwintering, but there are many to choose from, such as buckwheat, red clover phacelia and field beans. Often the foliage is cut using a shears before digging in. This time of year is traditionally a time for rhubarb planting and dividing. To divide rhubarb choose strong disease free plants. Dig them out and with a sharp spade, or knife – be careful – separate pieces from the rhizome, making sure to keep a growth point on each section. These can then be planted in good fertile soil. Discard any parts that look unhealthy, often the centre of the crown can be too old to keep. When planting, whether it be a division from a clump, or a pot plant, make sure to dig in a good amount of organic matter beforehand, and ensure the growing points are not covered, as this will cause them to rot. Crowns can be covered over the winter, if you wish to force them on in the spring. Put a mulch of straw on the

crown, then cover with an up-turned bucket or special rhubarb cloche. Your plant will then be forced to produce bright pink stems earlier than normal. When harvesting it pull the stem away rather than cutting it, as the residual stump left when cutting can rot. Other problems with rhubarb can be that they flower, thus weakening the crown. Cut out flower stalks as they appear. Flowering generally occurs after a wet summer, or if a high nitrogen feed has been used. If your plant produces lots of thin weak stalks, it is probably time to replace it. If the plant produces split stalks, it is often due to changeable growing conditions, such as wet weather followed by drought or vice versa. Crowns can die back due to waterlogging or bacterial infection, in which case discarding and burning are the best option. Rhubarb is high in vitamin C and K, which is essential for bone health. Also, it is a vital ingredient in yummy desserts such as rhubarb crumble. It is really easy to grow, and gives an excellent return on the space it occupies. So all in all, a great choice!

at Knockreer. This house was the replacement for Kenmare House, built in 1726, by the Earl of Kenmare. These photos show the opulent splendorous decor all lost in a fire in 1913. The fire was reported as accidental, however disgruntled local tradesmen featured in a newspaper report only weeks earlier in a dispute with the Earl over using non locals to do work on the windows. They said there would be ‘sever consequences’ for the Earl if this was to happened. Make your own mind up!

12TH ANNIVERSARY BURKE

Treasured memories of a loving mother, mother-in-law and grandmother, Kathleen Burke, Late of Ferndale Ave., Killarney Who died on October 15th 2006. R.I.P. In tears we saw you sinking, And watched you pass away, Our hearts were almost broken, We wanted you to stay. But when we saw you sleeping, So peaceful free from pain, How could we wish you back with us, To suffer once again. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God took you home. Always loved and remembered by son John Paul, daughter-in-law Joanne, grandson Danny and granddaughter Eva.

MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication. B.B.

2ND ANNIVERSARY O’DONOGHUE

LYONS

In loving memory of John Lyons, late of Ballinalane, Ballyhar, Killarney who died on the 11th October 1990. Just an average family, We didn’t ask for more, Then life was changed completely, With a knock upon the door. This awful thing had happened, And none of us knew why, You were never coming home, And we never said goodbye. Our world just fell to pieces, We cried in disbelief, We had to stick together, To overcome our grief. We’ll never understand it, It all seemed so unfair. We wish we heard that knock again, And see you standing there. Such a shock the day you left us, But we were very much aware, The mark you left on everyone, By the congregation there. Our world was really shattered, But it made us realise, You were such a wonderful person, In so many people’s eyes. You make us laugh, still to this day, With the remarks you used to speak, The winds of change blew fiercely, And took you far away, But now you live in paradise, Where we’ll meet again one day. Always loved and remembered by your wife Breda, daughters Bernadette and Geraldine xxx

R.I.P. The moment that you died My heart was torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you, I often lie awake at night When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane With tears upon my cheek. Remembering you is easy, I do it everyday But missing you is the heartache That never goes away.

Kerry SFC SEMI-FINALS PREVIEW

Dr Crokes Supporters will be hoping for a better result this Sunday against Kerins O’Rahillys who beat them in September. Pic: Don McMonagle

The two Kerry SFC semi-finals are down for decision in a double bill at Tralee on Sunday next, October 14. East Kerry will meet Dingle at 2.00pm followed by Dr Crokes versus Kerin’s O’Rahillys at 3.45 pm. With a new management in place for the Kerry team there will be an added attraction and interest in the county senior semi-finals. Before this championship started I picked East Kerry as the most likely team to win the Bishop Moynihan Cup and I stay with that prediction. Dr Crokes will have a big say in that as they progress through the competition. They have the best forwards around with a great blend of experience and youthful enthusiasm. Brian Looney has been playing well and showed his opportunism in the match against the Legion making the most of a defensive error and striking for a killer goal which really finished that game as a contest before halftime. Kieran O Leary is just making his way back after injury and he is fitting in nicely at full forward. Tony Brosnan is the chief scorer and he is scoring at will. O’Rahilly’s captain Danny O Sullivan will probably be his designated marker but it wouldn’t surprise me if they switch Cormac Coffey from the other corner back position. Micheal Burns has great pace and stamina and is always good for a few points. Will Crokes start Colm Cooper or hold him in reserve as a big impact sub? Crokes have plenty options up front with the talented David Shaw well able to take his place at corner forward. Crokes have the better range of forwards so that may well separate the teams. I am looking forward to a great battle at midfield. It is hard to call this area for supremacy. Johnny Buckley versus David Moran and Con Barrett to pick up Daithi Casey.

You may even see Tommy Walsh out there lending a helping hand if things are not going well for the Tralee side. He proved to be the match winner when they last met. That was an amazing game. Crokes were completely on top with a 9 point lead and just 10 minutes left in the game. Strand Rd. took over with Walsh in devastating form. Crokes leaked 2 goals and eventually lost by 4 points. That amazing comeback will boost the morale of O’Rahillys and Crokes will be wary of that. Con Barrett will partner Moran at midfield and he will have his hands full to try and contain Casey who has settled well as Buckley’s midfield partner. Walsh will prove a handful on the edge of the Crokes’ square. Michael Moloney must contest every ball with him as he will be striving for possession for the clinical finish of Barry John Keane, who is a great scorer and is consistent in his scoring. His marker will probably be Fionn Fitzgerald. Jack Savage wasn’t very prominent in his last outing but he has county experience and he will expected to up his performance on Sunday. Crokes have the fall back position if needs be to move Gavin White to the centre from his favourite position on the wing. Crokes’ captain John Payne can be relied on to play his part in the full back line. O’Rahillys will be wondering why they played so poorly for 50 minutes in the last match against the Crokes and Crokes will be wondering what caused that 9 point melt down. They eventually lost by 4 points. Apart from that match there hasn’t been more than a few points between them and they will meet each other again in the final of division 1 of the county league. I expect a close encounter on Sunday with Crokes slight favourites to win by something small like 2 points. East Kerry v Dingle @ 2.pm

East Kerry have been running up big scores in this competition and have scored several goals. Their forwards are very good and they are exceptionally strong this year with the Kilcummin contingent on board. These will not be eligible to play for the divisional team next year. For Sunday’s game Kilcummin will provide former Kerry goalkeeper Brendan Kealy, former Kerry minor Sean O Leary, midfielders Shane McSweeney and Kevin O Gorman and corner forward Kevin McCarthy, who has some experience with the Kerry seniors. I was very impressed with team captain Jack Sherwood in that big win over South Kerry. He is very comfortable on the ball in his favourite left-half forward position. Tom O’Sullivan will have the tough task of marking talented Fossa and youthful Kerry star the free scoring David Clifford. Since he graduated to the Kerry senior ranks Clifford has built on his reputation that he earned with the Kerry minors where he scored 4 goals in their All Ireland victory. His brother Paudie will operate at centre forward where he is playing very well. Add in the Spa duo of Darragh Moynihan and Evan Cronin and Darragh Roche from Glenflesk to make up a very strong forward division. They will run up a big score. I felt the defence was not as tight as it should be when this campaign started but it has improved and should be strong enough to hold the two Geaneys Paul and Mikey. They are good scorers but they may not get enough possession from midfielders Liam O Conchuir and Barry O Sullivan. The Dingle team is built around the local Dingle colleges’ team. In the quarter –final they ran in 3 first half goals and Stacks could not claw their way back. I expect East Kerry to win because they have proved to be great scorers.

Killarney Camogie Finish The Year With Another High! Words: Ceara Moore

2018 has been a phenomenal year for all involved in the Killarney Camogie Club. In January, the U14 team began their preparations for the year ahead. The chance of qualifying for the John West Feile na nGael in Connaught was the enticement to get the girls out training in bitterly cold conditions. By April, the team had secured their spot in the prestigious tournament when they beat Tralee Parnells in the U14 ‘B’ Feile Final. It was the first time in thirty four years that the club had qualified for Feile. Out of the Feile weekend, the team played four games and made lasting friendships with their host club, Moycullen. The U12 team made history themselves this year by qualifying for the U12 ‘A’ County Final. With only one loss under their belt, they went into the final on the hunt for a win. What the team lacks in numbers, they make up for with skill and fierce determination. They competed against North Kerry club Cillard for the County Crown and the Killarney girls came away with a comprehensive win in Crotta GAA Club in September. Another first for the Killarney Camogie Club. Several blitzes held over the year by Causeway, Cillard, Millstreet and Tralee kept the U10 girls busy throughout the season. They got to showcase all the skills they’ve honed over the year and develop their match playing abilities. The season starts winding down in September for the camogie club and one of their key events of the year is the Veronica Stack Tournament. Veronica was one of the founding members of the Killarney Camogie Club and sadly lost her battle with cancer in 2013. Since then, Killarney have held a blitz catering for all their underage teams and invite numerous other clubs to attend. This year was no different with an enormous 29 teams in attendance travelling from Kerry, Cork, Limerick and Galway. 13 different clubs took part

across the three age groups U9, U12 and U14. The Veronica Stack Tournament is the largest club run Camogie blitz in Munster with over 300 girls taking part. It’s a fantastic sight to see so many girls out enjoying this superb sport. Killarney were once again extremely successful on the day with the U14 team winning the Veronica Stack Shield and the U12 team contested the Veronica Stack Cup final. The U12 girls were beaten by a very talented Limerick club, Monaleen. This was all held at Spa GAA Club’s superb facilities. On the day, the club held a raffle with some fantastic prizes;signed Cork, Kerry and Tipperary Camogie jerseys, a handmade Killarney Camogie Club signed by Anna Geary and much more. A whopping €1,057.30 was raised with the proceeds going to

the Ian O’Connell Trust Fund. The U14 team had one last hurdle to overcome in the U14 ‘B’ County Final which took place last Saturday in Kerry GAA Centre of Excellence in Currans. Another battle against Tralee Parnells, Killarney came out the other end as winners once again. A final victory for the girls, coaches and club. Killarney Camogie Club have most certainly had one of their greatest years so far. One of the biggest achievements of the club was the influx of girls who joined this year. There are currently girls from seven different football clubs playing together and there truly is a vibrant community spirit within the club. Here’s hoping 2019 will be just as good!

Scotts Lakers Suffer First Home Defeat Scotts Lakers Killarney 96

A capacity crowd filled The Killarney Sports Centre for this top of the table clash on Saturday night and it was Ballincollig who maintained their unbeaten record while putting an end to Scotts Lakers winning streak. Both sides entered this match undefeated with five straight wins each and this added attraction meant that this fixture attracted the biggest basketball attendance of the weekend with over 700 people filling the Killarney venue. In the end it could have gone either way after both sides enjoyed the advantage at various stages of a thrilling encounter. American Andre Nation showed his scoring prowess for Ballincollig with the first four points before Dailian Mason hit Lakers first basket, followed by a big three-pointer from Mark Greene. Power forward Papito Hersisia hit a hot streak and scored nine points while Andrew Fitzgerald also added another basket. A five point lead was the most the Lakers could ever manage as Jack Kelly, Ian McLoughlin and Andre Nation kept the Ballincollig scoreline ticking. Mark Greene hit another three-pointer and Sean O’Brien, who up to this point had been provider, banged in three baskets in the last two minutes of the quarter, to help the Killarney side to a 25-22 lead. Ballincollig got off to the better start in the second quarter, with Nation hitting the early scores. However Sean O’Brien replied with a three-pointer and the Lakers hit a purple patch, scoring seven unanswered points to lead 35 – 28 with 6.30 left in the half. Papito Hersisia was very strong under

the boards and scored four fine baskets. In the meantime, Ballincollig were also very busy on the scoreboard, including four three-pointers. Interestingly, Jack Kelly can be credited with the final score for both teams in this quarter, one for Ballincollig in the normal fashion and in trying to block a Lakers shot, tapped the ball into his own basket to score for the Killarney team. With Andre Nation scoring freely and Ciaran O’Sullivan also influential Ballincollig enjoyed a 51-48 lead at half-time. A three-pointer from Ian McLoughlin started the scoring in third quarter. The Lakers responded through Papito Hersisia while team captain Mark Greene led by example with some outstanding play. However Ballincollig were scoring with ease mainly through American Andre Nation and Milan Labus, to lead 75–65 with three minutes left in the third quarter. However a late surge inspired by Justin Tuason brought the Lakers back into contention. Hersisia, McCarthy and the outstanding Tuason all added big baskets as Lakers narrowed the gap to one point, 79-78, with a minute left in the quarter. The Killarney side squandered an opportunity to take the lead as McLoughlin added another three-pointer to give Ballincollig a 82-78 lead entering the final quarter. The Cork side stretched their advantage to 14 points, 97-83, with less than four minutes remaining and it appeared to be well out of reach for the Lakers at this stage. Hersisia and O’Brien led a late Lakers onslaught outscoring the Cork side 13-4 in

the closing three and a half minutes to reduce the deficit significantly but it wasn’t enough in the end. It was a game that Scotts Lakers could have and maybe should have won. They had several opportunities to do so. While a lot of their game was excellent, some poor shot selection decisions and careless defence at times cost the home dearly. Papito Hersisia scored a massive 40 points while Sean O’Brien on 24 may not have been as impressive as some of his recent outings but was still a crucial driving force for the Lakers. The Killarney side also had some excellent contributions from Seamus Brosnan, Shane McCarthy, Justin Tuason and outstanding team captain Mark Greene. Ballincollig are a quality team and won’t be beaten too easily in this league. American Andre Nation is capable of hitting 40 points plus in every match while he is surrounded by an exceptional bunch of home grown Irish players. The Cork side now head the league table with six straight wins and Scotts Lakers have three away games on the trot to get their winning ways back on track. Scotts Lakers St Paul’s: Papito Hersisia 40, Sean O’Brien 24, Mark Greene 13, Dailian Mason 6, Seamus Brosnan 5 Justin Tuason 4 , Andrew Fitzgerald 2, Shane McCarthy 2. Ballincollig: Andre Nation 46, Ciaran O’Sullivan 17, Ian McLoughlin 10, Jack Kelly 8, Dylan Corkery 5, Daniel O’Sullivan 4. Next game for Scotts Lakers is on Saturday versus IT Carlow Basketball in Carlow.

12.10.18 School Girls Blitz

Girls Soccer Skills The inaugural Kerry School Girls Soccer Skills and Blitz in association with Bank of Ireland and the FAI took place at Killarney Celtic last Tuesday, October 9th. First Year Girls from schools all over Kerry participated in the day’s events. The format for the day was a whole group one hour ‘Skills and Drills’ session with FAI coaches Robin O’Day, Noel White and JP Mullins that the girls found to be both challenging and enjoyable. All the girls from different schools developed their passing, shooting and tackling skills as well as learning how to exploit the offside rule. After the skills session the girls went back to their school teams in order to take part in games against one another. The teams were arranged into an 11 a-side league and a 7 a-side league. After many very competitive and closely fought league games in the 11 a-side competition, Mercy Mounthawk of Tralee faced off against Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine of Kenmare, both of whom were unbeaten on their path to the final, despite the challenge of a very strong St. Brigid’s side from Killarney. In the final, Mercy Mounthawk emerged victorious on a scoreline of 2-0 against a very resilient and classy Kenmare side. In the 7 a-side league, the girls from Castleisland

Rally

C.C. and Mercy Mounthawk put in some very impressive performances throughout the day eventually losing narrowly to Coláiste na Ríochta of Listowel and St. Brigid’s of Killarney, both of whom made it into the final. In a very keenly fought contest, St. Brigid’s ran out as eventual 2-1 winners. To cap off an enjoyable day for all, there was a penalty shootout competition, which was eventually won by Sinéad Oliver of St. Brigid’s, Killarney who, despite the best efforts of the goalkeepers, proved flawless from the penalty spot. It is hoped that this event will run a number of times annually going forward. Any schools interested in participating in future can contact Pádraig Hartnett of the FAI School Boys and School Girls League in Kerry. Next up for the girls will be an FAI Futsal 5 a-side competition which will take place in Killorglin next Wednesday. After this, the Shannonside Secondary Schools Girls League will commence where the girls from schools throughout Kerry are pitted against schools from throughout West Munster and beyond. We would like to wish them all every success going forward.

Paul Nagle & Kris Meeke Are Back It is reported within the press this week that well know Killarney co-driver Paul Nagle and Dungannon’s Kris Meeke are back in the World Rally Championship for the 2019 season. The Irish pair have reportedly agreed a deal with Tommi Makkinen’s factory backed Toyota World Rally Team. The team are set to announce next week that Meeke will partner Ott Tanak and Jari-Matti Latvala in Toyota’s three car line-up. Toyota is currently leading the manufacturers championship by 20 points and it lead driver, Ott Tanak is second in the driver’s championship 7 point behind the championship leader, Thierry Neuville with two rounds remaining. Other Irish rally interest, Waterford driver, Craig Breen is out of contract at the end of the year but Breen has stated that he has a new contract in place for next season but that is increasingly likely to be at the M-Sport Ford team as a replacement for world champion Sebastian Ogier who is moving back to Citroen next year.

Munster Suffer Agonising Defeat At Aviva

Words: Liam Murphy

Last Saturday was another bad day at the office for Munster and even more so for their long suffering fans as the province fell to yet another away defeat this season – this time to bitter rivals Leinser at a packed Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Munster fans were rightly aggrieved by the poor officiating when Earls had a perfect try disallowed and the referee made some dubious calls throughout the match, which meant that the away record remains abysmal, with Munster only winning home matches so far this season. This is bad news ahead of a trip to English Premiership champions Exeter next weekend in the opening round of the Heineken Cup! But then again Munster are more than capable of a win, so here’s hoping. Closer to home there was a lot of rugby action right across province as the Munster Junior Leagues continued. Killarney RFC seniors made the long trip to Dunmanway following on from the epic encounter at Aghadoe against Tralee in the previous round. Killarney were excellent on the day, scoring 3 tries from Mike Sheahan, his brother Paudie and Ger Moynihan. Oisin O’Shea was sublime from the boot successfully kicking all the conversions and earning the man of the match title also. This puts Killarney into 4th place in the league and next up the lads host Ennis in two weeks time at Aghadoe. This promises to be another cracker of a match and all are invited to come along to support the lads. Thomond Park is a great place and there is some buzz in watching Munster in full flow, but for me there is something about watching local rugby matches and the J1 in particular. With the likes of Tralee, Killorglin and Corca Dhuibhne in our league, some fantastic matches await!

MERCEDES Lewis Hamilton has cruised to victory at the Japanese Grand Prix to take another major step towards his fifth Formula One world title. Hamilton was helped by a rash overtaking move by Ferrari title rival Sebastian Vettel, who collided with Max Verstappen while trying to overtake the Dutch driver. The accident on the eighth lap, after Vettel had moved from eighth on the grid to fourth, spun the Ferrari driver off the track, putting him back to 19th, before he eventually finished sixth. Hamilton was untroubled from pole position and took the chequered flag at the Suzuka circuit ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas. It is a second consecutive Japanese GP for the 33-year-old Briton, who now has a lead of 67 points over Vettel with four races of the season remaining. Ricciardo stormed from 15th to 4th. It was an impressive race for Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo who drove from 15th on the grid to finish fourth behind his team-mate Max Verstappen who could have won the race had it not been for a five-second penalty. Early in the race he made contact with Kimi Raikkonen and was deemed to have driven dangerously when re-entering the track. He was less than impressed with the sanction, turning the airwaves blue when Christian Horner delivered the news. He was no less irate after the race.
