So Yeon Ryu hoists the hardware after winning the 2011 U.S. Women’s Open Championship last summer at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo.

2012 PREVIEW

U.S. Women’s Open returns to Blackwolf Run Championship will celebrate Korean golf BY RICK PLEDL

W

hen So Yeon Ryu rolled in an unnecessary birdie putt on the third playoff hole to finally end last year’s marathon U.S. Women’s Open Championship, Se Ri Pak – the LPGA legend and member of the World Golf Hall of Fame – was fittingly among the Korean entourage to rush the green and shower Ryu with champagne. It was Pak, after all, who first served notice that she and her South Korean countrywomen would take the LPGA Tour by storm, and some of her first warning shots came at the 1998 U.S. Women’s Open at Blackwolf Run in Kohler. Ryu recalled Pak’s win in Wisconsin in ’98 as a key moment in her evolution as a golfer. Before Pak won the Women’s Open, Ryu said she was more serious about music than golf. But afterward, the roles reversed – the violin became her hobby and golf became her primary pursuit and passion. “When I was (starting) golf, Se Ri Pak won the U.S. Women’s Open tournament,” Ryu said after winning the 2011 Women’s Open. “So this tournament is

really special for me.” Thus, the 67th U.S. Women’s Open at Blackwolf Run in July, with defending champion Ryu and returning legend Pak expected to be in the field, figures to be a celebration of what has become a strong Korean presence on the LPGA Tour. It may seem distant now, but once upon a time American and European women dominated ladies professional golf. Pak changed that with her breakthrough 1998 season, winning four times, including two majors – prior to the Women’s Open she claimed the McDonald’s LPGA Championship – on her way to the 1998 Rolex Rookie of the Year Award. Pak, who finished 27th on the money list in 2011, enters the 2012 season with 25 career victories and ranked sixth in LPGA career earnings with more than $11.3 million. Between Pak’s and Ryu’s U.S. Women’s Open victories, three other South Koreans won the championship (Birdie Kim in 2005, Inbee Park in ’08 and Eun-Hee Ji in ’09), and five others have also claimed a 2012 WISCONSIN GOLF YEARBOOK

Kerr and Stanford faded, but Ryu forced the playoff when she drilled a 7-foot birdie putt on the championship’s 72nd hole. major championship. In 2011, dozens of South Koreans populated the LPGA Tour, including 14 of the top 40 on the tour’s year-end money list. The tour is trending more international all the time. Hayward is known for its Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame and its rustic surroundings. At the confluence of those themes is the Angry Minnow restaurant and brewpub, said to be located in the oldest building in Hayward. The menu includes Wisconsin favorites such as walleye and perch, Lake Superior whitefish and some impressive burgers, soups and salads. Of course, there are lots of folks in the northwest who identify more with the Twin Cities than they do Milwaukee or

f you’re looking for a variety of water hazards in your golf quest, Wisconsin’s wild and woolly northwest is the region for you. The northwest section of Wisconsin is bordered on the south and west by rivers Mississippi and St. Croix and on the north by Lake Superior, and there are untold thousands of water features scattered in between. The region is home to Wisconsin’s northernmost golf courses, Apostle Highlands GC in Bayfield, with views across the water of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and Madeline Island GC on the island of the same name, with views back across the water to Bayfield.

The northwest includes population centers such as Superior and Eau Claire. But woodsy smaller cities like Hayward, Spooner, Ladysmith, River Falls, Chippewa Falls and New Richmond are more prevalent, and all of those cities offer golf courses.

his is the heart of northern Wisconsin’s much-loved and oft-visited Lake Country. Go ahead, check out a map of Oneida and Vilas counties and try to figure out what the ratio is of land to water. Is it 50-50, 60-40, 70-30? Let’s just say

COURTESY OF MINOCQUA CC

Minocqua CC

there are more lakes here than you can shake a stick at – or for that matter a fishing rod. Not surprisingly then, the north-central region includes some of Wisconsin’s bestknown angling destinations, such as Eagle River, Minocqua, St. Germain, Boulder Junction and Rhinelander. And the sprawling Turtle Flambeau Flowage in Iron County amazes anglers and canoeists with its natural beauty and solitude. Thanks to a large land purchase in 1990, the state of Wisconsin owns 35,500 acres surrounding the flowage, including 114 miles of shore-

line and 195 islands, several of which offer rustic campsites on a first-come, first-served basis. Stevens Point, hard against the Wisconsin River in Portage County, is a pretty fair destination for fishermen, too, but lots of golfers also make the pilgrimage to Point. SentryWorld, located on the north side of town near the headquarters of Sentry Insurance, put Wisconsin on the national golf map when it opened in 1982. Wisconsin has grown into a world-renowned golf destination since then, but the Robert Trent Jones Jr. design at SentryWorld remains one of Wisconsin’s very best. The north is also crisscrossed with trails. There are trails for mountain biking in summer and trails for hunting in fall. Other trails cater to skiers or snowmobilers in winter and hikers and bird-watchers year-round.

Here, the south is heavily populated Outagamie County, including Appleton, which is right down the road from Green Bay. To the north, along the state line, is sparsely populated Florence County. The northeast section is also home to the only one of Wisconsin’s 72 counties that does not contain a golf course. layers should not expect even lies when playing the golf courses of hilly southwestern Wisconsin, but they may not care because the scenery can be spectacular. This is Wisconsin’s rugged Coulee Country, although geographers call it the Driftless Area. Regardless, most visitors call it gorgeous, because nestled into the bluffs-and-hollows terrain of this region are major rivers Mississippi and Wisconsin and their confluence south of Prairie du Chien. The largest concentration of golf courses here is found near La Crosse, the region’s largest city and a wonderful place to experience both the bluffs and Mississippi River. La Crosse is also home to some terrific restaurants and historic sites. Both of those are rolled into one at the Freighthouse Restaurant in downtown La Crosse, where diners enjoy steaks and seafood in a historic building that dates to 1880. The building, a National Historic site, was originally a Milwaukee Road freight house, and the railroad theme remains intact. Outside La Crosse, golf facilities in the region are scattered among towns large

and small that clearly take great pride in their hometown links. The bluffs east of the Mississippi River also boast an impressive array of cheese factories, craft breweries, artisans, fruit orchards and traditional family-owned Wisconsin farms.

DIRECTORY OF GOLF COURSES

SOUTH CENTRAL Bustling destinations attract golfers he richest, most concentrated vein of quality golf courses in the state may be located here. This 11-county region includes popular golf destinations such as Wisconsin Dells, Lake Geneva and Green Lake, and the cities of Madison and Janesville are overflowing with excellent golf facilities, too. Some of golf’s greatest course designers have shaped the land here. Geneva National GC, located along Lake Como just north of the actual body of water called Geneva

Lake, offers three championship courses, designed by Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and Gary Player. cont. on page 44 PHOTO COURTESY OF GENEVA NATIONAL GC

In the Dells, Wisconsin’s Andy North and his design partner Roger Packard created all 27 holes at Trappers Turn GC. And on the other side of town, Wild Rock GC, designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, opened in 2008. Hurdzan and Fry are the same design team primarily responsible for Erin Hills in Erin, site of the 2017 U.S. Open. Both Trappers Turn and Wild Rock play through the sort of rugged, rocky and woodsy terrain for which the Dells are famous. Green Lake – admittedly a smaller, quieter vacation destination than Lake Geneva or the Dells – features the Golf Courses of Lawsonia, where the Links course, built in 1930 by legendary golf course architects William Langford and

his may be the most universally known region of Wisconsin, thanks to the Fox River Valley, the Door Peninsula and a much-loved, community-owned football team known for collecting an obscene number of NFL championships. Packers training camp, Packers games and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame are major economic drivers in the region.

Horseshoe Bay GC

Whistling Straits

While Green Bay is first and foremost a football town, this region is also home to Kohler Co.’s two outstanding 36-hole golf facilities. Maybe you’ve heard of them: Blackwolf Run in Kohler is hosting its second U.S. Women’s Open Championship in 2012, and Whistling Straits in Sheboygan will host its third PGA Championship in a 12-year span in 2015. Road America, the famous road course in Elkhart Lake, is just west of Kohler and

offers a full slate of racing in 2012, including a visit by NASCAR in June. Lake Michigan also beckons, with the historic towns of Sheboygan, Two Rivers, Kewaunee, Algoma, Sturgeon Bay and, of course, Green Bay. These port cites earned reputations for shipbuilding and commercial fishing and they still look to the big lake for commerce and recreation. The region also boasts a golf opportunity at the other end of the spectrum from the Kohler courses. To access the nine-hole golf course at Deer Run Resort, off the tip of Door County, players must first hop the ferry to Washington Island. 2012 WISCONSIN GOLF YEARBOOK

DIRECTORY OF GOLF COURSES

SOUTHEAST You want people? We got the most olf competes with so many other interests in the six-county region that comprises extreme southeastern Wisconsin, the most heavily populated section of the state. The list begins – but certainly doesn’t end – with the Milwaukee Art Museum, the defending National League Central Division champion Milwaukee Brewers, Waukesha County and its shimmering Lake Country, the Kettle Moraine, numerous ethnic and community festivals, the Holy Hill area and Wisconsin’s oldest building – the St. Joan of Arc Chapel on

some dating to the 1890s. More recently, many of Wisconsin’s biggest and boldest new courses have landed here. Erin Hills in Erin, site of the 2011 U.S. Amateur Championship, The Bog in Saukville and Washington County GC in Hartford are brawny modern layouts built since 1995.

the Marquette University campus, which was built in France in the 15th century and painstakingly moved to Milwaukee in the 1960s. Still, golf is an integral part of the landscape. Milwaukee is absolutely a golf town, and so are Racine, Kenosha and Waukesha. The cities and counties of southeastern Wisconsin offer numerous municipally-owned courses, and the region is also home to some of Wisconsin’s oldest and most respected private clubs,

Kettle Hills GC

Milwaukee has also earned a reputation as a wonderful place to enjoy the gastric arts. Milwaukee is a German city all the way down to its architecture, so sausage and beer are omnipresent. But the Brew City boasts some fantastic upscale dining options like the Bartolotta Restaurants, a group of family-owned establishments such as Bacchus, Lake Park Bistro and Harbor House, located on Milwaukee’s lakefront. 2012 WISCONSIN GOLF YEARBOOK

Erin Hills

Erin Hills hits a home run with U.S. Amateur The 111th U.S. Amateur Championship, held for the first time in Wisconsin, went off without a hitch in August. Officials from the USGA had nothing but praise for hosts Erin Hills and Blue Mound G&CC. “The USGA thought (the 2011 U.S. Amateur) was an unparalleled success – better than their wildest expectations,” said Jim Reinhart, general chairman of the event. With free admission to the public, more than 20,000 spectators came out during the championship to support tomorrow’s stars. Adding his to the list of names on

the Havemeyer Trophy was 22-year-old Kelly Kraft of Denton, Texas, who won the championship in a 2-up final-match victory over Patrick Cantlay, 19, of Los Alamitos, Calif. In a press conference following the event, Mike Davis, executive director of the USGA, compared Erin Hills to Pebble Beach and Shinnecock Hills in terms of mainstays in American championship golf. The 2011 U.S. Amateur was a trial run for the 2017 U.S. Open, Erin Hills’ next USGA championship. 2012 WISCONSIN GOLF YEARBOOK

On the college scene

COURTESY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA

Michael Burcin earned his first head-coaching position when the University of Wisconsin named him to that post in May. Burcin had spent the last six years as an assistant coach at South Carolina, was named an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2011 Palmer Cup and was also named the 2010 Golf Coaches Association of America’s Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year. On building a fence around Wisconsin, Burcin said: “We need to be the No. 1 presence and be a force as far as keeping the best players in Wisconsin. We need to develop relationships with golf instructors, pros and the Wisconsin State Golf Association because they do have influence over where our kids go to school. If we have good relationships there, and there is some trust developed, it makes our job of recruiting a little easier.”

2011 WSGA Hall of Fame inductees Former WSGA executive director Tom Schmidt and rules official, volunteer and administrator Arnold Walker proved there are other ways to earn golf fame than playing. Schmidt and Walker were recognized for their behind-the-scenes efforts to enrich the game by being inducted into the WSGA Hall of Fame. Schmidt joined the WSGA in 1997 as tournament director, and in 2000 he succeeded Gene Haas as executive director, serving through 2010. He also served on the WSGA board of directors for 16 years. Often called the hardest working golf volunteer in the state, Walker has served as a volunteer, rules official and administrator for the past 50 years. A longtime board member, he began his association with the 80 |

I certainly don’t put myself on the same pedestal as them. But I’m glad that my contributions had some equaling amount to what they’ve done,” Schmidt said.

Players of the year Wisconsin State Golf Association Jack Schultz, a member of the University of Michigan golf team, was named WSGA player of the year. He won the WSGA Match Play Championship in June after coming from behind on the 19th hole at the Links at Grand Geneva in Lake Geneva. Other winners include: Mark Bemowski, WSGA senior player of the year; Jackie Shepherd, WWSGA player of the year; Maggie Leef, WWSGA senior player of the year; Jack McKinney, junior boys player of the year; and Becky Klongland, junior girls player of the year.
