Dylan Patscot, Kettle Moraine
H E LP F ROM H IS F RIEN D S Division 1 medalist Kaylor Steger of Oak Creek and sixth-place finisher Dylan Patscot of Kettle Moraine are good friends, as both players explain in this Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story. Evidence of that relationship could be seen after the players hit their tee shots on the par-5 ninth hole Tuesday. After Steger hit his tee shot into a fairway bunker on No. 9, Patscot reached out a hand for what appeared to be a motivational fist bump as the two strode off the tee. Steger shot a front-nine 40 Tuesday, but responded with four birdies on the back nine to win the Division 1 individual race by one stroke.

Lancaster’s drive to the Division 3 team title was aided by the Hentrich brothers. Senior No. 1 player Zach Hentrich shot 74-75–149 to finish second among individuals in the division. His little brother, No. 4 player Josh Hentrich, is a freshman at Lancaster who aided the team cause by shooting 83-83–166, good for a tie for 18th place.

STA R POWER Mequon Homestead received some inspiration on Tuesday from reigning Wisconsin State Amateur champion Jordan Niebrugge, a 2012 Homestead graduate. Niebrugge – coming off his appearance in the Masters Tournament this spring and the Walker Cup last fall – won the 2012 WIAA Division 1 individual title. On Tuesday, he sat behind the second tee at University Ridge as the Homestead players came through. As big a name as Niebrugge has become on the amateur golf scene, Waterford High

School might have gone one better on the star-power meter this week. Waterford resident Joyce Malison was on the course working in her role as an assistant coach, a job she has held for about 15 years, according to Waterford head coach Mike Harmeling. Malison, a 1975 Wisconsin State Golf Association Hall of Fame inductee, won five tournaments on the LPGA Tour in the 1950s and ‘60s, including the 1960 Women’s Western Open, then an LPGA major. Malison was a member of the 1954 Curtis Cup team.

Two teams repeat, one wins first title
HOMESTEAD, CATHOLIC MEMORIAL AND LANCASTER ALL WIAA WINNERS Confusion turns into celebration for D1 winner Mequon Homestead There was no shortage of excitement at this year’s WIAA State Boys Golf Championships held at University Ridge GC in Verona. It all came down to a last-minute scoring decision by tournament officials to determine the Division 1 team title winner. Mequon Homestead High School led a three-team race for most of the tournament until that lead was overtaken by Green Bay Notre Dame Academy with six holes left. The Highlanders fought their way back and regained the lead by one, and after the completion of play the two teams thought the title was going to Homestead. Not so fast, said scoring officials. A Tritons golfer shot a 78 but his score was posted as a 77, which would have meant a tie and a two-team playoff. “Doing the math, everybody seemed to have us winning by one,” said Homestead head coach Steve O’Brien. “It seemed like a done deal, and then all of a sudden we were told it might be a tie.” After a lengthy deliberation, the score was corrected to 78 and confusion turned back into celebration for Homestead. “Talk about a change of emotions for all of us,” said O’Brien. “We were so elated and then a quick stroke of reality set in. But once the mistake was rectified, it was determined we were the winner by one large stroke.” The Highlanders’ two-day total of 42-over-par 618 (308-310) was enough to edge out Notre Dame
(313-306–619) by one. Eau Claire Memorial High School shot 310-314–624 to take third. Homestead junior Charlie Maleki led the way for the repeat champ Highlanders, posting a 2-over-par 146 (72-74). “Charlie Malecki was terrific both days,” said O’Brien. “He played terrific golf. He came mentally prepared to play and let his ability take over.” His teammates, senior Marty Kimmel and freshman Robbie Morway, both tied for 37th by shooting 13-over-par 157. Kaylor Steger, playing individually for Oak Creek High School, went into the clubhouse as the leader after day one by firing an opening-round 68. Although he went on to bogey five of his first 10 holes in the final round, he caught fire on the back nine with a birdie run that started by making a 25-foot putt on par-3 No. 12. Adding a bit of his own drama to the day, Steger made a three-putt bogey on the 18th hole to allow three other golfers to remain in an already tight race. As clubhouse leader, he would have to wait and see how it all played out, but Oak Creek saw its first individual state champion crowned. Steger finished the tournament with a 2-under-par 142 (68-74). “I had one goal for this year,” said Steger. “(To win) state.” Steger edged out runners-up Bennett Hutson of Onalaska High School (69-74–143) and Ricky Kuiper of Racine Case High School (72-72–143) by one stroke. Brookfield Central High School senior Eddie Wajda took fourth with an even-par 144 (72-72).

PENA LTIE S A SSESSED Playing the final foursome in Division 2 Tuesday afternoon, River Valley’s Alex Wedige was assessed a two-stroke penalty when he accidentally grounded his putter in the line of his putt. River Valley eventually finished fourth in Division 2, two strokes behind Sheboygan Falls. Kenosha Tremper senior Nick Perri earned a two-stroke penalty Monday when he mistakenly hit his tee shot from the forward tees on the par3 eighth hole. (With five girls at state, two teeing grounds were marked on each hole.) A second player in the group was about to pull the trigger on the wrong tee when a rules official stopped him. Perri re-hit from the back tee and, with the penalty, recorded a double-bogey 5.

The other two girls – St. Thomas Aquinas players Taylor Wilson and Molly Linczeski – shared the No. 5 spot for Aquinas, but only Wilson saw action at University Ridge, tying for 50th in Division 3.

WSGA FOUNDATION HELPS HIGH SCHOOL GOLF FLOURISH More than 200 student-athletes swarm University Ridge GC in Verona during the annual WIAA State Boys Golf Championships. It adds up to well over 400 lines on the tee sheet in the pro shop over two busy days with players going off the first and 10th tees. Those athletes can thank the hard working employees at University Ridge and the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, who operate the event and the facility, and the Wisconsin State Golf Association Foundation, which pays for it. The WSGA has paid the annual green fees for all competitors at the boys and girls WIAA golf cham-
pionships for many years. The WSGA Foundation – which was created to preserve and promote the game of golf in Wisconsin and provide funds for those purposes – has paid the green fees since the foundation was formed in 2005. The WSGA Foundation has also supported financially challenged high school programs around Wisconsin since its inception. This winter, the WSGA Foundation awarded grants totaling $46,400 to 40 high school golf programs. For more information, or to make a donation to the WSGA Foundation, click here.
