Welcome to the 2019 season
W
elcome to the 2019 Wisconsin Golf Yearbook, a joint venture between the Wisconsin State Golf Association and Killarney Golf Media Inc. It has been an amazing run for golf in Wisconsin with a decade’s worth of major championships, the development of Sand Valley Golf Resort and Wisconsin becoming a powerhouse golf destination worthy of anyone’s bucket list. Sand Valley opened two new courses in 2018 and announced another is on the way. Following in the footsteps of the first course at Sand Valley, Mammoth Dunes received its own best new course award while giving golfers another great reason to come back to Wisconsin or visit for the first time. Professional golf continues to thrive with annual stops by the PGA Tour Champions near Madison and the LPGA in the Green Bay area. And of course, the countdown is officially underway for the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits. But this publication is about more than just the big professional events in the state. Most of the pages are dedicated to the courses, players and amateur events that make Wisconsin special. The 2019 WSGA schedule again features top courses from around the state and events for players of all abilities. Competitive “net” events throughout the summer offer a great opportunity for the higher handicap golfers to have fun and win a trophy of their own. Meanwhile, the best players in the state will be competing for the biggest trophy of all at the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship sponsored by West Bend Mutual Insurance at The Golf Courses of Lawsonia on the Links Course in July (see Page 10). The Links Course is an architectural gem that will surely give competitors a great test of golf. If you’re not ready for the State Amateur, Lawsonia is still worth the trip, as are all the other courses the state has to offer.

A LINK TO THE PAST
Famed Lawsonia course awaits state’s top amateurs
G
reg Dick had played a lot of golf throughout Wisconsin as a talented young amateur and then nationally as a member of the University of Houston and Northern Illinois University golf teams. When he first set foot on the historic Links Course at the Golf Courses of Lawsonia, though, it was almost as if he was about to play a different game. With cross bunkers cutting diagonally across fescue-framed fairways, semi-blind tee shots, push-up greens flanked by fearsome bunkers and a confounding set of massive putting surfaces, Lawsonia might as well have been built on the far side of the moon. “At the time, I had never seen a golf course like that,” said Dick, who went on to win the 1980 Wisconsin State Amateur Championship on the splendid William Langford-Theodore Moreau design. “It was a unique layout at the time and really the first time I’d played that kind of golf course.” In recent years, “links golf” has become all the rage, with courses such as Whistling Straits, Erin Hills and

Chambers Bay and resorts such as Bandon Dunes and Sand Valley paying homage in one way or another to the classic seaside links of Scotland and Ireland. But the Links Course, which opened in 1930, predates all of them by decades and remains one of the best examples of inland links architecture in America. Many consider it the finest design by Langford and Moreau, who teamed to build more than 200 courses, including the acclaimed Skokie Country Club in suburban Chicago and Ozaukee Country Club in Mequon. Often referred to as a hidden gem because of its off-the-beaten-path location near Green Lake in southcentral Wisconsin, the Links Course at Lawsonia has been “discovered” by course architecture buffs and magazine raters. It is ranked No. 59 on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses and is No. 60 on Golfweek’s list of Top 100 Classic Courses in the U.S. And finally, after 39 years, the state’s

premier championship for amateurs is returning. The 118th Wisconsin State Amateur is scheduled for July 15-18 on the Links Course. “It’s hard to believe they haven’t been back,” said Dick, now the general manager at University Club of Milwaukee and a member of the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame. The best players in the state, including defending champion and Vanderbilt standout Harrison Ott, will find a course that remains true to its nearly 90-year-old roots, thanks to a Ron Forse restoration and a tree-removal program under Oliphant Golf Management that left the back nine virtually treeless. With the course maxing out at about 6,800 yards and ideally playing firm and fast, longer hitters will have an advantage if they can keep their ball in the fairway. Lawsonia features five par-5s, at least three of them gettable, and the back nine starts 3-5-3-5-3. Still, the bomb-and-gouge crowd had better be accurate with their short irons because the course’s first line of

defense is its massive, fortified greens. The steep fall-offs on the sides and especially behind many of them will force players into some uncomfortable short-game shots if their aggression leads to wayward approaches. “They’re going to have to play shots they have never played,” said Josh Carroll, the head PGA professional at Lawsonia. “As far as recoverability around the greens it’s probably the hardest course in the state,” said Bill Linneman, director of rules and competitions for the Wisconsin State Golf Association. “With the slopes and mounds and tiers in those greens, there’s plenty of defense. “We’ll have to be very careful in setting hole (locations).” Superintendent Mike Lyons said the greens, which run about 10 feet on the Stimpmeter for daily play, could be as fast as 12 for the State Am. “That would be the max we could get them at,” he said. “At that speed, the
undulations are pretty brutal.” Though the fairways are wider than average, the penalty for missing them is potentially severe. The fairway corridors are flanked by shin-high fescue, the thickness and severity of which will depend on how much rain falls in the spring. “I have no doubt that Mike and his staff will do an awesome job,” Linneman said. “We’re hoping the course plays very firm and very fast. I don’t think we’re going to turn it into a Carnoustie but we want it to be firm and fast. If it rains a lot and it’s soft, that just means we’ll be able to use some hole locations we otherwise wouldn’t be able to use.” Lyons said he has lobbied the WSGA to turn the par-5 fifth hole into a par-4 for the State Amateur, in which case par would be 71. Linneman, however, said he would prefer that the course plays the same for the championship as it does for public play. “What the hole lacks in distance,” he said, “you can make up for in hole locations.” No matter how it is set up for the State Amateur, Lawsonia promises to provide a stern but fair test.

The variety of holes, the green complexes and the bunkering are just spectacular. “I think the players are going to love it. I’ve never met anyone who has played Lawsonia and doesn’t love it. It harkens back to a time in golf course architecture that is unique. It’s fun to play. You wonder how golf got away from that type of architecture when it’s so much fun and so challenging.”

O
n the first day of the first PGA Tour tournament of 2019 a player who was taking a drop extended his arm at shoulder level and prepared to let go of his new ball, just as golfers at every level have been doing for the past 35 years. Except under the new Rules of Golf that took effect on Jan. 1 he was doing it wrong. Now the rule stipulates that a drop be taken from knee height, not shoulder level, which is both a small change and a huge difference. Luckily for the player in Hawaii, someone else in his group pointed out his error and he correctly dropped without penalty. You can expect the same at golf courses across the land when the season arrives because, without doubt, there is going to be a learning curve for rules-abiding golfers in 2019. “The transition is going to be a bit weird,” said Bill Linneman, director of rules and competitions for the Wisconsin State Golf Association. While by some estimates 80 percent of the rulebook is unchanged, there are changes both big and small in many

MORE LPGA FIREWORKS FOR THORNBERRY CLASSIC?
After record-setting 2018, tournament looks to 2019 and beyond
T
he Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic enters the third and final year of its contract with the LPGA Tour in 2019, but LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan is quick to dispel any doubt about its future. Calling the tournament “the LPGA at its best,” Whan emphasized the importance of the Green Bay market to the tour and predicted that “over the next 10 years, I think it’s going to be one of the most popular events on our schedule.” “My takeaway is that it’s an incredible hometown experience,” Whan said. “To me, it feels like Toledo and Portland and Palm Springs. I just threw out those cities and the shortest tenure of any of those I just named is 40 years. Green Bay, to me, already feels like the stops that have been on the tour for decades. “It’s the kind of event that made the LPGA great and continues to make it great.” After two years, the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic is still feeling its way to some extent, cultivating relationships with sponsors, building community support and exploring ways attract golf fans statewide. “I think we’ve seen a lot of growth and success, especially from a partnership side of things,” said Josh Doxtator, the chief operating officer for Oneida Golf Enterprise Corp. “In Year One, there was a lot of hesitancy. The area wasn’t used to seeing a tournament year after year. After Year One, there was a lot more acceptance.
“In order for it to survive and be here for 20 or 30 years, it’s going to need community support and partnerships.” The 2019 tournament is scheduled for July 4-7. “Being in Green Bay on the Fourth of July, as an American, it’s a great place to be,” Whan said. If you like to see the best players in the world make birdies, there’s no better place than Thornberry Creek, where South Korea’s Sei Young Kim shattered the LPGA’s 72-hole scoring record last year. She shot rounds of 63-65-64-65 for a 31-under-par 257 total, breaking the previous record of 27-under set by Annika Sorenstam at the 2001 Standard Register Ping and tied by Kim at the 2016 JTBC Founders Cup. Kim also had the most sub-par holes in a single event with 32, breaking the record of 30 shared by Brittany Lincicome, Gerina Piller and Lexi Thompson. And she wasn’t the only golfer to light it up. Of the 78 players who made the cut, there were 179 rounds in the 60s and 20 rounds of 65 or better. The field finished a combined 946 under par and in the final round alone there were 347 birdies and 10 eagles. That begs a question: Is 6,624-yard Thornberry Creek too easy? “I find it strange with people who have a problem with great golf,” Whan said. “It’s fun to watch. In professional golf you don’t get numbers like that because the course is easy. You get numbers like that because the greens

are perfect. “I hope we don’t try to make the golf course super hard. If every week is a U.S. Open, that’s not fun for the fans, the sponsors or the players.” Doxtator is sensitive to the criticism that Thornberry Creek does not offer a stiff enough challenge. “I think what people need to understand is that we’re at the mercy of the LPGA a little bit,” he said. “We can get the greens faster, which would provide more difficult conditions. We can get the greens to 13, 13½ (feet on the Stimpmeter). We averaged 11½ to 12 during the tournament.” The Thornberry Creek Classic drew 64,000 spectators for the week last year, a slight increase from the 62,000 in the tournament’s inaugural year. It produced an economic impact of $7.4 million, according to Doxtator. “We’re the second-largest economic impact behind the Packers from a sporting event,” he said. “This year our marketing plan is to reach down into the Milwaukee area with billboards and radio. From a media reach we are expanding further west, toward Eau Claire and La Crosse.” Doxtator said he was hopeful a contract extension with the LPGA would be finalized by spring 2019. “The LPGA wants us to be here,” he said. “They don’t want to go away. They know this is a great market for women’s golf.” For more information visit www. thornberrycreeklpgaclassic.com. 2019 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook | 15

TWICE IS NICE
Second Symetra Tour event in state adds a ‘legendary’ feel
E
ven the most passionate Wisconsin golf fans might not be familiar with rising stars like Ruixin Liu, Dottie Ardina, Pavarisa Yoktuan, Elizabeth Szokol, Linnea Strom, Stephanie Meadow, Kendall Dye, Charlotte Thomas or Dana Finkelstein. They were all in the field last August at the fourth annual PHC Classic at Brown Deer Park Golf Course in Milwaukee. They were also nine of the 10 golfers who earned a promotion from the Symetra Tour to the LPGA Tour in 2019 by virtue of top-10 finishes in the Volvik Race For The Card at the end of the 2018 season. But Wisconsin golf fans can probably recognize veteran golfers such as Laura Davies, Trish Johnson, Juli Inkster, Liselotte Neumann and Sheboygan native Martha Nause. They are among the Legends Tour stars who will likely be called upon to help bridge the gap between past and future of the LPGA Tour in August, when the Symetra Tour and Legends Tour cross paths at Janesville Country Club. The inaugural Janesville Golf Classic will debut on both schedules in 2019 with the Symetra Tour playing a 54hole tournament starting Aug. 2 and 3 before the Legends Tour joins the LPGA’s developmental tour Aug. 4 for an 18-hole event. For the Symetra Tour, the Janesville event will launch a two-week stay in the state with the PHC returning to the schedule the next weekend at Brown Deer Park. “When (Janesville CC) came to us and we had the opportunity to pair them up with the existing event in Milwaukee, it was a perfect fit having the two (events) back-to-back,” said Mike

Nichols, the chief business officer for the Symetra Tour. “They will benefit each other in terms of attracting stronger fields because they are right there back-to-back. I also think the people from Janesville getting their first taste of the Symetra Tour, if they enjoy the experience, might find their way to Milwaukee and the casino the following week. … It’s a win-win for all concerned.” Janesville CC wasn’t looking to score a Symetra/Legends twinbill, according to general manager Derek Intinarelli, but his members are excited at the opportunity to showcase the oldest country club in Wisconsin and sixth-oldest in the country. “To be honest, we weren’t looking to do anything quite like this,” said Intinarelli, the general manager at the TPC-Stonebrae in Hayward, California — the site of the Web.com Tour’s Ellie Mae Classic — before coming to Janesville a year ago. “One of the challenges we have on the Symetra Tour is that people really haven’t heard about the players so they may not appreciate how good the level of play is,” Nichols said. “By bringing in some of these players like a Laura Davies or a Nancy Lopez or Catriona Matthew — players who have won major championships on the LPGA Tour and with whom people have an affinity — people come out and watch them play. People will come out to watch the Legends and they’ll be like ‘Oh, my goodness, I had no idea the level of play out here on the Symetra Tour.’ It’s good for us, in terms of it raising the profile of the Symetra Tour event.” In addition, officials believe the

Janesville event stands to raise the profile of Milwaukee’s event, which has enjoyed great success in luring the top golfers on the Symetra Tour to a venue that previously hosted the PGA Tour’s Greater Milwaukee Open.
MARTHA NAUSE “I think the only impact the Janesville event has on the Milwaukee event is positive,” said Chet Hendrickson, golf services manager for Milwaukee County Parks. “If anything, I think it creates more awareness. There are probably people in Janesville who weren’t aware there is a Milwaukee event and probably people in Milwaukee (unaware of an event 90 miles away in Janesville beginning this year). So I don’t see how it takes away from anything here in Milwaukee. “Hopefully, it lets us keep building it and who knows where it ends up some day.”

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT
SentryWorld to test world’s best as U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship host
I
n recent years, Wisconsin has played host to the best male golfers in the world (2017 U.S. Open), the best female golfers in the world (two U.S. Women’s Opens), the best senior golfers in the world (2007 U.S. Senior Open), and the best amateurs in the world (2011 U.S. Amateur). Coming in 2019: the best young female amateurs in the world. SentryWorld in Stevens Point, an esteemed Robert Trent Jones Jr. design, will be the host site of the 71st U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship, July 22-27. “I think it’s a great track for this demographic,” said Tracy Parsons, the championship director for the United States Golf Association. “It’s in a beautiful part of the country. SentryWorld is a good, solid test. There are lots of options to challenge the 156 players so that we can narrow it down and ultimately determine our champion.” First conducted in 1949, the U.S. Girls’ Junior is open to female amateurs who have not turned 19 on or before the final day of the championship and have a handicap index not exceeding 9.4. The list of champions includes Hollis Stacy, Mickey Wright, Nancy Lopez, Inbee Park and Lexi Thompson. Sentry Insurance plans to pull out all the stops to ensure that the championship leaves a lasting impression on the contestants, officials and spectators. Uniforms will be provided free of charge to volunteers, there will be free admission for spectators and the

course will be closed for up to two weeks prior to the championship so that the turf conditions are perfect when the players arrive for their practice rounds. “Let’s face it: Stevens Point is not Monterey Peninsula,” said Stevens Point native Mike James, general manager of SentryWorld and vice president of Sentry Services. “Going out to Monterey for these girls (the 2017 championship was at Poppy Hills), what a thrill that is. Coming to Stevens Point, they’re like, ‘Where are we going?’ I would say the same thing if I lived in California. “Our goal when they step on the grounds for the first time is that they say, ‘Oh, I see why we’re here now.’” SentryWorld opened in 1982 and has a proud tradition as the state’s first destination golf course. It’s a parkland gem known for its beauty, challenge and superior conditioning. The course underwent a top-to-bottom renovation in 2013 and ’14 under Jones, the original designer, and course architects Bruce Charlton and Jay Blasi. “It really brought the golf course to a new level,” said Danny Rainbow, the director of golf. “It was a very good golf course before, but it’s really at the forefront now for an event like this. The golf course is obviously very, very important to the USGA. It’s the most important thing.” Parsons, who also conducts the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, said SentryWorld would provide tremendous flexibility for the two

days of stroke-play qualifying and for match play. For example, the short par-4 11th likely will be played all the way back during stroke play to avoid pace of play issues, but during match play the tees will be moved up so it will be a drivable par 4. The par-3 12th, over water, has a wide teeing area, so different angles and hole locations “will give it a different look every day,” Parsons said. Fox Sports will televise the final two days of the championship. “That will be very helpful for us to get our brand out, which has been overshadowed by Erin Hills and Whistling Straits,” James said. “They do a fantastic job. They’re unbelievable at what they do, so I get it. But it’s something like this that can help get SentryWorld to keep pushing up toward the top.” SentryWorld hosted the 1986 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links, which holds the entry record of 1,085 for that championship, conducted annually from 1977-2014. James said he hoped the U.S. Junior Girls’ Championship would rekindle a mutually beneficial relationship with the USGA. “It’s a long-term process that we have in place,” he said. “I think a U.S. Open is not something that would be realistic, but I would love to see a Women’s Open or a men’s Senior Open. Those are the big ones that probably a lot of other places want. We’ll be patient.”

BUNKER MENTALITY
Am Fam Championship to test U-Ridge facelift
W
hen the best senior golfers in the game arrive for the American Family Insurance Championship the week of June 17-23 at University Ridge Golf Course they will find a course dramatically improved over the one they played previously. Mostly, though, in places they don’t want to go. At the urging of the PGA Tour Champions, UW embarked on a nearly $1 million bunker renovation project throughout the course that will not only offer better playability but also reduce maintenance demands in the future. “There is (irony), completely,” said University Ridge superintendent Phil Davidson of improving places most golfers would rather avoid. “But it’s such an important part of playing the game … it’d be boring if there wasn’t any sand out there.” The renovation, done in conjunction with architect Bruce Charlton of Robert Trent Jones II, who designed the course in the late 1980s, was far more involved than simply taking old sand out and putting new sand in the course’s 81 bunkers. A few bunkers that didn’t often come into play were removed completely in favor of bent-grass swales, while some of the course’s large bunkers were broken up into several smaller bunkers, so 20 | The Voice of Golf in Wisconsin
the total number won’t change much, Davidson said. The project called for rebuilding all bunkers using the Better Billy Bunker Method, a patented system named for the onetime superintendent of August National Golf Club, Billy Fuller. Now employed at hundreds of courses around the country, the system calls for two inches of pea gravel as the base of the bunker, covered by a polymer spray that holds the gravel in place while still allowing rainfall to drain. The intended result is less sand erosion — and thus less bunker repair — even after heavy rainfall and less contamination from native soils as well. “It’s going to be much better for everybody,” Davidson said. “The Tour’s going to like it, the players are going to like it” and course officials are going to love it because it will reduce time and money spent repairing bunkers after torrential rains like those experienced in the last two years. “It takes a tremendous amount of labor to restore them” after washouts, Davidson said. Even the look will improve because the new bunkers will have sharply cut edges that “will really make them pop,” Davidson said. While the work was undertaken at the Tour’s urging, Davidson said it was time for a re-do anyway.
WRITTEN BY DENNIS McCANN
“Bunkers have a lifespan. We’re at 25 years … bunkers typically last 18 years so we’re a little past our due. But yeah, the Tour drives it a little bit. They were playable but (needed work).” The project began last fall on the back nine and work continued into December as weather allowed. Davidson said work would begin in spring as soon as the ground is snow-free and thawed and the hope would be to be done, or nearly so, by May 1 when renovation work would stop so the course could grow into shape for the June tournament. And while the work was begun with the tournament in mind, those who play University Ridge the rest of the year will likely enjoy the improvements, Davidson said. Steep slopes in some bunkers were removed and workers will be able to maintain uniform sand levels, he said, which should reduce fried-egg lies and help even highhandicap players. This will be the fourth American Family Insurance Championship. Last year, Scott McCarron edged a star-laded field to win by one shot over Madison’s Jerry Kelly and two over tournament host Steve Stricker, Fred Couples and Colin Montgomerie. GROWING THE GAME
New format, big hopes as Geneva National hosts State Open
T
he Morgan Stanley Wisconsin State Open golf tournament will be significantly bigger in 2019. But that’s not enough for executive director Joe Stadler and the Wisconsin PGA, which runs the annual gathering of the state’s top professionals and amateurs. They want it to be better, too. That’s why Stadler is literally putting out a call for all men, women and children to try to qualify for the expanded 2019 State Open, which will be played Aug. 19 through 21 over the Palmer and Trevino Courses at Geneva National Resort in Lake Geneva. Playing the first 36 holes of the 72-hole event on two courses will allow the field to be expanded from 156 golfers to 204. To aid the call for qualifiers, Stadler made sure the seven qualifying sites are all top-notch — securing four private country clubs and three of the state’s top public facilities, including The Irish Course at Whistling Straits for the $25 site fee that amateurs and WPGA members pay on top of their $110 qualifying fee and non-WPGA professionals pay in addition to their $185 entry. The WPGA caps each qualifying site at 84 golfers. None of the sites over the last five years has attracted more than 74 golfers, but Stadler hopes the lure of the additional spots and qualifying

If the larger field proves successful, Stadler said provisions are in place to find secondary courses for the 18hole facilities that are hosting in 2022 (Ozaukee Country Club in Mequon) and 2023 (SentryWorld in Stevens Point). At this point, he said, the State Open will remain a 72-hole event over three days with the 36-hole finale played at the primary site on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Geneva National promises to give the 204 golfers in the 2019 field all they can handle in the Trevino Course, the primary site, and the Palmer Course, the secondary site. “The Trevino Course holds up real well in competition,” Geneva National head professional Bryan Brotchie said

Northwood Golf Club is an 18-hole golf course carved out of ancient rocks, rolling hills and dense forests in Rhinelander, WI. Northwood opened for play in May 1989 and was designed by Minneapolis golf course architect, Don Herfort. Northwood lies on a 260-acre parcel of land that nature did a great job of landscaping. To his credit he used the natural feeling of nature to create a golf masterpiece. Northwood is located just minutes away from 232 freshwater lakes, the Pelican and Wisconsin Rivers, modern accommodations, and fine dining. Experience the thrill of playing a course that the WSGA rated 5th in Wisconsin from 1989-1994.

WSGA FOUNDATION
74 golf programs benefit from grants
H
ow about a golfing trip to Hilton Head Island? Or perhaps Arizona? Any why not a round trip to Ann Arbor to watch the Wisconsin-Michigan football game? Those excursions were among the several items auctioned off last September at the Wisconsin State Golf Association Foundation Outing. The ninth annual outing raised more than $100,000, bringing the total garnered over the years to more than $725,000. In 2018, a record $68,500 will go to aid 74 high school golf programs (see list below) in Wisconsin that requested financial help. Also benefiting from the Foundation is the newly formed Youth on Course program, which allows juniors to play golf for just $5 at participating courses. The WSGA Foundation was formed in 2005 to preserve and promote the game of golf in Wisconsin and provide funding for those purposes. It is a Section (c) (3) organization. For more information, or to make a donation to the Foundation, go to www.wsga.org.
