Welcome to the 2020 season
W
elcome to the 2020 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook, a joint venture between the Wisconsin State Golf Association and Killarney Golf Media Inc. The previous decade brought us major championships, the development of Sand Valley Golf Resort and Wisconsin becoming a powerhouse golf destination worthy of anyone’s bucket list. This decade is starting out no different. For the first time in Wisconsin history, the Ryder Cup and Junior Ryder Cup are coming to the state. The Ryder Cup, with Wisconsin’s very own Steve Stricker as captain, will be held at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Sept. 22-27. Historic Blue Mound Golf & Country Club will host the Junior Ryder Cup on Sept. 21-22. Neither event should be missed. You can read about it on Pages 10, 12. The PGA Tour Champions returns to Madison with new dates in early June. The American Family Insurance Championship will continue at University Ridge in Madison but the dates will move to May 30June 7 (see Page 20). But this publication is about more than just the big professional events in the state. Most of the pages are dedicated to the courses, players and amateur events that make Wisconsin special. The 2020 WSGA schedule again features top courses from around the state and events for players of all abilities. Competitive “net” events throughout the summer offer a great opportunity for the higher handicap golfers to have fun and win a trophy of their own. Meanwhile, the best players in the state will be competing for the biggest trophy of all at the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship sponsored by West Bend Mutual Insurance at famed Milwaukee Country Club in July (see Page 14). Milwaukee CC is consistently ranked in the top-100 private courses in the United States and features some breathtaking holes along the Milwaukee River. In anticipation of a great turnout, the WSGA schedule includes 11 qualifiers located throughout Wisconsin.

Ryder Cup mania comes to Whistling Straits – GARY D’AMATO
A
n impressive run of major championships in Wisconsin, beginning with the 1998 U.S. Women’s Open at Blackwolf Run and including three PGA Championships at Whistling Straits and the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills, will reach a crescendo in September. That’s when 12 of the top professionals in the United States – led by team captain Steve Stricker of Madison – and 12 of Europe’s best square off in the 43rd Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits. The biennial Ryder Cup has become the biggest and most lucrative event in golf. The three-day competition (Sept. 25-27) will be televised to 500 million households around the world and is expected to produce an economic impact of $135 million. Revenue from TV rights and corporate partners exceeds that of a U.S. Open or PGA Championship by about 35 percent. Tickets sold out in less than an hour in a random lottery in October, and some 45,000 fans will pack Whistling Straits daily for the practice and competition rounds. Ticket applications came from all 50 states and more than 150

countries and territories. What makes the Ryder Cup so big? The match-play format produces exciting head-to-head competition. There is no prize money, but the incentive to win could not be greater, with bragging rights and pride at stake. It’s one of the few times when golfers aren’t independent contractors but teammates, coming together for a common goal. The galleries are loud, rowdy and partisan. “The main difference at a Ryder Cup versus a PGA, at the PGA it may be that I’m rooting for Rory (McIlroy), you’re rooting for Tiger (Woods) and the person next to us is rooting for Phil (Mickelson),” said Ryder Cup director Jason Mengel. “At Whistling Straits, I would imagine a majority of spectators on site will be rooting for the U.S. team. The atmosphere that creates when you’re playing for your country, it’s really like nothing else in golf.” It wasn’t always this way. From the inaugural Ryder Cup in 1927 through 1983, the United States compiled a 213-1 record. Even hard-core golf fans couldn’t get excited about a
competition that was so one-sided. But starting in 1979, the Ryder Cup was opened to all of Europe — prior to that only players from the United Kingdom were eligible — and the tables started to turn. Led by the brilliant and pugnacious Seve Ballesteros of Spain, Europe won the 17-inch, four-pound Ryder Cup in 1985 and repeated in 1987. Suddenly, the friendly little exhibition was a rivalry. The Europeans approached the matches with a chip on their shoulder and the Americans were caught somewhat flat-footed. Since 1985, Europe has won the Ryder Cup 11 times in 17 tries (with one tie), which means over that span the U.S. has a 5-11-1 record. Two years ago, the Europeans cruised to a 17½ - 10½ victory at Le Golf National in Paris, France. Stricker, a 12-time winner on the PGA Tour and the reigning U.S. Senior Open champion, is tasked with winning back the Cup at Whistling Straits, just a couple hours from his boyhood home in Edgerton and his residence in Madison.
“
We’ll take a look at what’s worked for us in the past. It won’t be like Paris, just put it like that. It’s not going to be tight (narrow fairways) with heavy rough. I’ll look back at some Ryder Cups where we’ve had some success and see what they’ve done there, and plan accordingly.” – STEVE STRICKER
Steve Stricker and Padraig Harrington He has plenty of experience, having played in three Ryder Cups and served as an assistant captain in three more. In 2017, he captained the U.S. to a resounding 19-11 victory over the International team in the Presidents Cup. Stricker said his leadership style borrows from the captains he has played for and observed. “I’ve been around the game for a long time,” he said. “I believe I have the respect of the players. I’ve learned a
lot over my career. I’ve been a part of eight teams as a player (including the Presidents Cup) and another five or six as a captain or vice-captain. I understand a lot of the things that are going on behind the scenes and what needs to be done to prepare a team.” Eight golfers will make the 2020 U.S. Ryder Cup team off a points system based on prize money won at PGA Tour events from Jan. 1, 2019 through Aug. 23, 2020. They will be joined by four wild-card picks selected by Stricker after the Tour Championship in early September. Europe uses a slightly different qualifying procedure. Nine players automatically will make the team at the conclusion of the European Tour’s
BMW PGA Championship on Sept. 13, 2020, four from the Race to Dubai points list and five from the world points list. Captain Padraig Harrington of Ireland will announce his three at-large selections on Sept. 14, 2020. Whistling Straits has proved its mettle as a major championship venue, having hosted the PGA Championship three times, along with the 2007 U.S. Senior Open. “This event is the pinnacle of golf events,” said David Kohler, president and CEO of the Kohler Co. and general chair of the 2020 Ryder Cup. “It will be the biggest event in sports in the state of Wisconsin. So all the world’s eyes will be on us and we’re going to execute a tremendous event. The fan experience is going to be great. Wisconsin fans show up, and there’s going to be a lot of energy in this event.” The Straits, which opened in 1998, was designed by Pete Dye on bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. It is an Irish links reproduction, featuring soaring dunes and hundreds of bunkers of all shapes and sizes laid over a windswept, treeless terrain. That gives rise to the question whether the U.S. team will truly enjoy a “home-course advantage,” though Stricker will have considerable say in how the course is set up. In Paris, the set-up featured thick rough and slow greens, which favored the Europeans because Americans don’t typically see those conditions on the PGA Tour. “We’ll take a look at what’s worked for us in the past,” Stricker said. “It 2020 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook | 11

I’ll look back at some Ryder Cups where we’ve had some success and see what they’ve done there, and plan accordingly.” Stricker plans to split his time as a player in 2020 between the PGA Tour and the PGA Tour Champions, though he’ll likely spend more time on the former, where he’ll be around prospective team members.
Whistling Straits “I want to see the guys out there when I do play,” he said. “That will be part of my gig, to go out there and see how those guys are doing, how they’re playing, play practice rounds with them, communicate with them and go from there.” The Americans have grown tired of answering the question: Why do the Europeans keep beating you in the Ryder Cup? During a taping of Golf Channel’s “Feherty” in Sheboygan last fall, Harrington said his wish for the 2020 matches was that they are close and competitive. Host David Feherty turned to Stricker, who smiled and said, “That’s Padraig’s dream. I want to win.”

Junior Ryder Cup heads to Blue Mound – GARY D’AMATO
T
he Ryder Cup isn’t the only biennial international competition coming to Wisconsin in 2020. A few days before 12-man professional teams from the United States and Europe square off at Whistling Straits, the 12th Junior Ryder Cup will be held at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Wauwatosa. The Junior Ryder Cup is modeled after the Ryder Cup, with the same match-play format. The U.S. and European teams are comprised of six boys and six girls. For the U.S. side, the players are members of the high school graduating class of 2021 (or younger) and must be U.S. citizens. The competition dates are Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 21-22. Prior to that, team members will play in a junior-member event with Blue Mound members and also will play two practice rounds. The event is open to the public and there is no admission charge. On Wednesday, Sept. 23, the day after the competition concludes, the Junior Ryder Cup team members will play an exhibition on holes to be determined at Whistling Straits. “These are the best junior players in the world,” said Trenton Blundell, tournament manager / junior championships for the PGA of America. “I would say this is the No. 1 most anticipated junior event in the entire world. Just from our team in 2018, Akshay Bhatia has turned professional, Michael Thorbjornsen qualified for the (2019) U.S. Open and Yealimi Noh already has a secondplace finish on the LPGA Tour. “These are players playing on a tour level.” Blundell said Blue Mound, designed by Seth Raynor and known
for its superior conditioning and challenging green complexes, was a natural to play host to the Junior Ryder Cup. Blue Mound was Erin Hills’ partner course for the 2011 U.S. Amateur and will serve in that capacity again when Erin Hills hosts the 2022 U.S. Mid-Amateur. “Obviously, there are a select few courses in Wisconsin that would have the prestige and ability to host such a prestigious championship,” Blundell said. “Blue Mound works great logistically and the golf course itself will make for an extremely exciting match-play venue. “It’s not a bomb-and-gouge golf course. It’s a thinking golf course where you have to know how to play shots into the greens.” It will be a busy year for Blue Mound, which also will host the 2020 Wisconsin State Open. Jeff Beischel, the club president, said the members were excited to host the Junior Ryder Cup. “Very much so,” he said. “I mean, this place is a golf club. People love to give back to golf. Their golf IQ is high. They love the game, so convincing the membership to host is not a difficult thing here.” Derek Sprague, former president of the PGA of America, will serve as captain of the U.S. team. Paul Lawrie, the 1999 British Open champion, has been named captain of the European team. The Americans hold an overall record of 7-3-1 in the event and haven’t lost since 2004. Casey Danielson of Osceola represented the United States in 2012. Among other Junior Ryder Cup alumni are Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Lexi Thompson and Vicky Hurst.
POWER OF ONE
Women’s golf gets boost with organizations’ merger – ROB HERNANDEZ
G
rowing the game can be a time-consuming task when yours is a volunteer golf organization that, for years, spent as much time running tournaments as you did recruiting new golfers to play in them. That was the struggle of the Women’s Western Golf Association until last year when its two showcase events — the Women’s Western Amateur and the Women’s Western Junior Championship — shifted tournament-administration duties to the Western Golf Association. The WGA has a long history of running two of the most enduring and revered men’s amateur championships (the 117-year-old Western Amateur and 102-year-old Western Junior) and, by all accounts, led a seamless transition. That will be the goal of the Wisconsin State Golf Association in 2020 when it absorbs the tournament administration of events that previously fell under the auspices of the Wisconsin Women’s State Golf Association. The two associations announced in December a merger, of sorts, that will end one of the most frustrating and misunderstood components to participation in WWSGA events by streamlining the registration process and creating one administrative portal for that purpose. “It felt like there was an awful lot of duplication of effort, based on the administrative side of what we were doing,” said Jeanne Whitish, president of the WWSGA, whose group had been in discussions with the WSGA about a merger since early 2018. “On one side, you had the (WSGA), which had some paid staff and certainly the knowledge, know-how and resources. And then you had the WWSGA, which was completely volunteer and trying to make a best effort to put on decent tournaments for women. “When you looked at two BlueGolf
Jeanne Whitish and Rob Jansen (tournament software) contracts. And two schedules. And two (membership) fee structures that most golf courses were confused by in the first place, it seemed like a conversation that was, at least, worth being explored.” WSGA executive director Rob Jansen believes it will be a win-win for all golfers. “We always try to focus on what’s best for the golfer, what’s best for the game,” Jansen said. “The benefits that we’re going to see from this are going to be great for the golfer and ... help grow participation in the women’s events and elevate the events themselves.” That was also the objective of bringing the two Women’s Western events under the WGA’s watch. The WGA tweaked the tournament formats of both the women’s and junior events, ending the practice of creating multiple flights after stroke-play qualifying and eliminating consolation matches from the week’s schedule. Instead, both tournaments featured 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying with 32 spots in the match-play draw in the
women’s event and 16 spots in match play for the junior girls event. “We’ve had a great relationship with the Women’s Western Golf Association for a number of years,” said Vince Pellegrino, senior vice president for tournaments for the WGA and one of 50 staffers who contribute to the operations of the WGA and the Evans Scholars Foundation. “It’s a volunteerbased organization. They certainly don’t have the staff we do at the Western Golf Association. … (It’s) from an economies-of-scale perspective of partnering with us in that we run golf tournaments already and we have the staff to be able to take on the added responsibility. It felt like a natural to partner with what is really our sister organization to administer the golf championships. “(It) went great ... first year. It was a year to figure out their championships and how they are organized and take this year as a baseline year in order for us to analyze them and to figure out ways to make all of our championships better.” 2020 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook | 13

LURE AND LORE
Historic Milwaukee CC to draw state’s top amateurs – GARY D’AMATO
T
he State Amateur Championship has been contested 10 times at Milwaukee Country Club, but just twice since the tournament switched from match play to stroke play in 1971 and not at all since Bob Gregorski edged John Pallin in a thriller in 1995. After a 25-year hiatus, the Wisconsin State Golf Association is taking the 119th State Amateur back to the revered private club in 2020, a year that will see the State Open played at venerable Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Wauwatosa and the Ryder Cup held at Whistling Straits. “It will be a fantastic year,” said Bill Linneman, the WSGA’s director of rules and competitions. “We wanted it to be that way, with the Ryder Cup ending the year in September. The Wisconsin PGA is conducting their State Open at Blue Mound, another fantastic, historic course. We wanted it to be a special year.” Milwaukee CC, designed by Golden Age architects H.S. Colt and Charles Alison, is considered one of the great classic courses in America. Steeped in history and tradition, the club has an old-world aura about it that is difficult to put into words. Step onto the manicured grounds, though, and you immediately feel it. “People ask you what your favorite course is, and I always put Milwaukee
14 | The Voice of Golf in Wisconsin
at the top my list,” said Gregorski, a two-time State Amateur champion and member of the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame. “A lot of it is the history and tradition with the locker room and the golf course. It just has a feel of a great golf club. It’s not just winning the State Am there. It was my favorite before that.” Linneman noted that several talented young players are nearing the end of their college careers, including defending State Amateur champion Hunter Eichhorn of Carney, Mich., who will be a senior at Marquette University. They’ll get to tee it up in a State Amateur at one of the state’s best courses before they presumably start chasing their dreams of playing golf professionally. Because Milwaukee is an ultraprivate club and it’s been a quartercentury since the last State Amateur was contested there, the WSGA anticipates a record number of entries. The record of 869 entries was set in 2015, when the championship was held at Erin Hills, which had been awarded the 2017 U.S. Open. “It will be unbelievably popular,” said Linneman of the event to be held July 27-30. “We’re guessing it will be as big or bigger than Erin Hills was in 2015. We’re going to be conducting 11 qualifying sites instead of nine. Entries
are limited at each site to 84. So, there’s room for over 900. I wouldn’t be surprised if we had over 900. And six of the 11 qualifying sites have been previous State Amateur sites.”Among those who inquired about entering, Linneman said, was 2015 U.S. MidAmateur champion Sammy Schmitz of River Falls, who plays most of his competitive golf in neighboring Minnesota. Eichhorn is expected to defend the title he won on the Links Course at the Golf Courses of Lawsonia. He said he has played Milwaukee CC once, as a freshman in a Marquette team qualifying round. “I really enjoyed the course and design, and it will be an honor to try and defend at a place with such an aura to it,” he said. “The State Am is a tournament that I always look forward to playing in and with it being hosted at Milwaukee CC I’ll be very excited to tee it up this summer.” Though it’s been awhile since the club hosted the State Amateur, it has a long history with the championship. Fred Pettit of Kenosha Country Club won the title in 1902, just one year after the inaugural State Am was held at Sinissippi CC in Janesville. E.P. “Ned” Allis won two of his record 10 State Amateur titles at his home course, in 1914 and 1922. Another
Milwaukee CC member, Lynford Lardner, won the title in 1938. Lardner would serve as president of the United States Golf Association in 1972-73. The club also hosted the State Am the first year it switched to stroke play, with George Madsen winning with a 72-hole score of 300. It was Gregorski’s turn in 1995. Tied with Pallin going to the final hole,
to par 72, remains true to its classic design. Asked what made it special, Linneman said, “The features, the greens, the bunkering, the elevation changes, the variety of holes, the condition of the course. It’s just a majestic place”. It’s a course that requires strategic thinking, patience, shot-making skills
and a deft touch around the green complexes. Impetuous young players who think they’re going to overpower it with their driver are in for a rude awakening. “It’s one of those courses where even if you’re in a perfect position in the fairway, if you don’t know the green you can get in trouble very fast,” Gregorski said. “Kids are going to look

Gregorski hit his drive into a fairway bunker, wedged out, hit his third shot onto the green and three-putted for a double-bogey. But Pallin bladed a greenside bunker shot into the parking lot and out of bounds en route to a triple-bogey, and Gregorski was the champion. “A lot of people remember the last hole where John made triple and I made double, but I prefer to remember the first 12 holes,” Gregorski said. “I birdied seven of the first 12. I started that round seven shots behind Pallin and we were in the last group together, which tells you how well he played for the first 54 holes. We played pretty well coming in. That last hole really was an anomaly.” Milwaukee CC has been tweaked in recent years, with consulting architect Tom Doak and associate Dan Placek removing many trees to open up views of the Milwaukee River. Blue Mound perfect host for 100th State Open – ROB HERNANDEZ

rom its revered layout defined by its unique greens to its proud history dating to the early 1900s, Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Wauwatosa could not be a more fitting venue to play host to the milestone 100th Wisconsin State Open Championship in 2020. That’s because there is one pearl buried deep within its 117-year history that makes the Seth Raynor-designed course the perfect venue for Wisconsin’s signature golf event: It hosted the very first State Open in 1919 when Arthur Clarkson won the first of his back-toback titles. It will be against that celebrated backdrop that two-time defending champion Dan Woltman of Beaver Dam attempts to author his own bit of history Aug. 17-19 when the former University of Wisconsin golfer seeks a recordtying fifth State Open championship. Francis Gallett, who became Blue Mound’s first head professional in 1925 and spent 37 years in that

position, was the first to win five in 1942 (before the tournament took a two-year hiatus during World War II). He was followed by Milwaukee’s Manuel de la Torre (1968), Milwaukee’s Bob Brue (1972) and Edgerton native and current Madison resident Steve Stricker (2000). However, when Woltman plays Blue Mound in preparation for his title defense, it will be the first time the Korn Ferry Tour golfer sets foot on the property. Blue Mound last played host to the State Open in 1952 and last welcomed the State Am in 2003, when Woltman was 17. “I have never played Blue Mound in my life,” Woltman said shortly after earning exempt status on the PGA Tour’s top developmental tour for the 2020 season. “I have a standing invitation from (executive director) Rob Jansen of the WSGA to come out this year at some point to play a round with him; he’s a member out there. I said ‘I’d love to come and take
Blue Mound G&CC you up on that.’ “But I’ve never played there. There was never a State Am or a State Junior or anything at Blue Mound (while he was an amateur). I know it’s a great golf course. I know a lot of people love it. If I am able to play (the State Open), hopefully I have enough time before the event to learn the intricacies of it because I’ve heard it has some interesting and tough greens to get at pins.” Indeed, that’s where Barry Linhart,
tell you the greens speeds increased dramatically over (2018) and I have no doubt they’re going to continue to do that. “And the golf course, when it plays firm and fast and they’re going to have some rough … it’s going to be really, really difficult. It’s just going to be a difficult place to play.” In fact, asked to offer what he believes to be Blue Mound’s signature hole, Schuman replied: “I think there

from pneumonia in 1926 at age 51. “The course is more of a second-shot golf course; the greens are large and big and interesting and I think that’s where all the challenge is going to be,” Linhart said, mindful that in 2011 nine of the 64 match-play qualifiers at the U.S. Amateur Championship shot higher scores at Blue Mound than Erin Hills in its half of the 36-hole strokeplay qualifier and just 28 qualifiers shot more than three shots better on the 6,622-yard Blue Mound layout that measured 1,138 yards shorter than Erin Hills, which served as the primary site for the championship that week. “It’ll be interesting, just because it is fairly forgiving off the tee. But most championships are won on the greens anyway, at some point. And the subtleties and interest in architecture on these greens are going to be something that a lot of these (State Open) players have never seen before or would even know existed in Wisconsin.” Madison native Jim Schuman, a two-time State Open champion and four-time runner-up, has spent the last seven years at Blue Mound as its resident teaching professional. He has played the course enough times to know exactly what kind of challenge lurks come mid-August. “They’ve really been on a program to get the golf course back to maybe some of its original architecture,” Schuman said. “They’re trying to get the conditions back; they’re trying to get the golf course firm and fast. SEASON OF CHANGE
AmFam dates unleash a calendar makeover – ROB HERNANDEZ
A
ndy Landenberger was among the first to connect the dots and realize what the American Family Insurance Championship shifting dates in 2020 would mean for Wisconsin’s other golf organizations, whose window for scheduling is often controlled by the whims of the weather. “My first thought was ‘Oops, that’s going to be a problem,’” said Landenberger, the director of junior golf for the Wisconsin PGA who must annually schedule more than 80 events in and around conflicting tournaments run by the WIAA, WSGA, USGA and other providers. Indeed, Wisconsin’s golf schedule remained a work-in-progress as the calendar flipped to 2020 as the state’s various golf entities reacted to the dominoes that fell once the PGA Tour Champions informed the AmFam Championship that it would be moving to June 5-7. Many saw the news as risky for both the PGA Tour and the wildly popular senior circuit stop at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison. It had become a week-long community event the first four years of the event in late June, after school was out for the summer and the last graduation parties had been thrown but before Milwaukee’s entertainment staple Summerfest — another AmFam-supported event — and, of course, the start of Green Bay Packers training camp. “With the U.S. Senior Open adjusting its dates (to the week after the U.S. Open two of the next three years) and our original date not being available, looking at the options available we knew we wanted to stay in the month
18 | The Voice of Golf in Wisconsin
of June,” AmFam tournament director Nate Pokrass said. “It’s the best time, collectively, for professional golf. School’s in session before heavy summer vacation kicks in. American Family has some other corporate activities in July. We didn’t want to roll into late June with the Summerfest partnership. When you look at that early June period, we felt good about it. Temperatures should still be good and the golf course should still be in good condition.” The next scheduling domino to fall? The WIAA state boys golf tournament, which is also played at University Ridge and was forced to move one week later than scheduled, to June 15 and 16. “The timing gets complicated with the U.S. Senior Open and AmFam during the years ahead,” WIAA assistant director Tom Shafranski said, hoping weather woes that have plagued boys golf in the spring will benefit from the later start. “We’re doing what we can to make it work.” Ditto for Landenberger, who took one of the WPGA Junior Tour’s signature events — the Lake Arrowhead Invitational — and moved it from the front of the summer schedule to the back end in August, where it had been until 2016. Ironically, Landenberger had moved the popular 36-hole event held on both courses at Lake Arrowhead GC near Nekoosa into June because of conflicts between Day 2 of the event and, frequently, the opening day of WIAA girls golf practices. Meanwhile, the WSGA was worried about its men’s state match-play championship going head- to-head with the WIAA state boys tournament
and approached The Club at Strawberry Creek in Kenosha about moving the 2020 event one week later, to June 22 through 25. As it turned out, WSGA director of rules and competitions Bill Linneman said, Strawberry Creek officials were set to make the same request of the WSGA after landing two major outings opposite the old dates. Just when it appeared the June schedule was set, another conflict emerged between two major women’s events — the Wisconsin State Women’s Open and the WSGA women’s state matchplay championship, both of which were initially scheduled the week of the WIAA state tourney. Instead, the women’s match-play event will be moved one week later and — like the men’s event — could pose a remote conflict for junior golfers who advance deep enough in the match-play bracket to have to play Wednesday matches opposite the WPGA Junior Championship. Meanwhile, the WSGA senior women’s championship flip-flopped dates with the women’s match play, but that left a conflict for a handful of senior women who have also competed in the State Women’s Open. Linneman, whose organization has taken on the administration of the women’s tournament schedule in 2020, said efforts are being made to address that scheduling conflict. “Truth be told, we’ve had a harder time avoiding conflict with the women’s schedule that is now under our umbrella than we have the high school event being moved back,” Linneman said. “In an ideal world, we want everyone to be happy and things to work out perfectly.”

new bar seems to be set each year by the Wisconsin State Golf Association Foundation when it comes to disbursements to high school golf programs across Wisconsin. In 2019, a record 108 golf programs (see list below) were recipients of grants totaling $76,500, an all-time high. The Foundation received more than $100,000 in 2019 during the 10th annual golf outing and silent auction held last September. The WSGA Foundation was formed in 2005 to preserve and promote the game of golf in Wisconsin and provide funding for those purposes. The Foundation is a Section (C) (3) organization. The Foundation also supports the Youth on Course program that allows juniors to play golf for just $5 at participating courses. For more information, or to make a donation, please go to www.wsga.org.
ne year after perhaps growing too big, too fast with its presence in Wisconsin, the Symetra Tour released its 2020 schedule with its annual stop in Milwaukee and room to add a second stop in the state to the LPGA developmental tour. But, as the new year began, it wasn’t ready to go there — or say where there might be — quite yet. Instead, the Symetra Tour confirmed a preliminary schedule that features six events in the upper Midwest, including its annual stop in Milwaukee for the PHC Classic, which will be held Aug. 7-9 at Brown Deer Park Golf Course. It will be the end of the Symetra Tour’s swing through Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. A Symetra Tour spokesperson indicated that there will be a second Wisconsin event, but said the name and date were still to be determined. As it stands, women’s golf will have a significantly reduced presence in Wisconsin compared to 2019. The Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic, held near Green Bay over July 4th weekend the last three years, was dropped from the LPGA Tour schedule in 2020. The tour’s three-year deal with the Oneida Nation, which covered the tournament purse and other expenses with minimal corporate support, ended shortly after the third annual event at Thornberry Creek at Oneida when the Oneida Nation tribe voted to end sponsorship of the event. Meanwhile, the Symetra Tour’s anticipated footprint in Wisconsin turned out to be smaller than officials had hoped a year ago, when it announced the addition of a combination Symetra Tour/Legends Tour event planned for Janesville Country Club, the week before the PHC Classic. However, the Symetra event in Janesville never materialized and was quietly removed from the schedule in favor of a twoday Legends Tour pro-am structured more like an outing than a bona-fide tournament.

A new start as AmFam Championship turns 5 – ROB HERNANDEZ
I
t’s hard to imagine it being a bigger year for the American Family Insurance Championship than it will be in 2020 when the PGA Tour Champions event moves up two weeks on the senior tour schedule and serves as the starting block, of sorts, for a historic year of golf in Wisconsin. The fifth annual tournament will be played June 5-7 at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison and will be one of three title defenses in 2020 for Jerry Kelly. The Madison native, who also won The Ally Challenge in Michigan and the SAS Championship in North Carolina among 14 top-10 finishes in 2019, won more than $2.3 million and finished second in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup standings behind 2018 AmFam Championship winner Scott McCarron. It will also mark the start of what promises to be a career-defining year for tournament host Steve Stricker, the United States captain for the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Haven. Stricker is expected to play less on the senior circuit while keeping a watchful eye on the young talent on the PGA Tour but will be hungry to rid himself of the sour taste after failing to convert a potential winning putt on the 54th hole of the 2019 AmFam Championship and then becoming the first player eliminated in the playoff Kelly won over Retief Goosen on the second extra hole. “You realize he won my tournament first,” Kelly joked recently, referring to the Cologuard Classic in Tucson, Ariz., which Kelly hosts and Stricker won in 2018 for the first of his five PGA Tour Champions victories. “That was payback for me (at the 2019 AmFam) a little bit.” The first playoff finish in the event’s four-year history brought to a close another eventful week at University 20 | The Voice of Golf in Wisconsin
Jerry Kelly Ridge, one that raised a record $2.4 million for local charities and led to the AmFam Championship earning its second straight Presidents Award from PGA Tour Champions. There was the first Race For Research 5k run. There was the annual Friday evening concert at Breese Stevens Field featuring country-music star Toby Keith. There was the Saturday celebrity foursome featuring host Andy North, a two-time U.S. Open champion from Madison; golf legend Jack Nicklaus; former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre and Keith. Plans for those tournament staples are being finalized heading into 2020. Country music group Little Big Town will play the June 5 concert after the opening day of competition. North will again host the Saturday celebrity foursome. The big question facing the tournament entering its fifth year is how it will adjust to its earlier dates. Most local schools will still be in session. Average
temperatures are about four degrees cooler over the first full weekend of June than they were the tournament’s traditional dates. “We’re excited for the 2020 tournament,” AmFam tournament director Nate Pokrass said. “It’s a big year for golf in the state of Wisconsin, as a whole, with the Ryder Cup coming in late fall. We’re excited for (our) fifth annual tournament and, of course, our defending champion and our hometown friend Jerry Kelly. Little Big Town has been a great success so far; ticket sales have been just as fast as they were for Toby Keith and Toby Keith was moving at a record pace. You add the second year of having the 5k run and building off the 1,200 runners that we had last year. We’re on good pace for another great tournament week.” Kelly can’t wait for it to get here. “You have so much emotion (in Madison) anyway, whether you are defending or not,” Kelly said. “It’s a place where we want to win so bad.”

2020 Preview ALL FOR ONE, ONE FOR ALL
New worldwide system for calculating golf handicaps debuts in 2020 – DENNIS MCCANN
L
ast off-season, golfers were getting ready to absorb a series of new rules meant to simplify the game (Really? Drop from the knee, not the shoulder?). This off-season, attention shifts from the rule book to the handicap, as a new World Handicap System launched in January 2020 replaces the six different handicap systems used around the globe with a single system for every player. Developed after extensive study by the USGA and the R&A and with input from existing handicap authorities, the new system is aimed at providing all golfers with a consistent method of measuring playing ability. One main objective of the new system is encouraging more golfers to obtain and maintain a Handicap Index that could be used to guarantee fair competition anywhere in the world. It will also suggest the score a golfer is reasonably capable of achieving during each round of golf. The change took place in much of the world in January, including the U.S., but will go live in other parts of the world later in the year. Under the new system it will be easier to establish a handicap. Now, players must report five 18-hole scores; the new system requires just 54 holes, using any combination of 18-hole and nine-hole rounds.
22 | The Voice of Golf in Wisconsin
Currently, a handicap is an averagebased calculation using 10 of your last 20 scores; the new system will use eight of your last 20 scores. Another way of encouraging more golfers to establish handicaps is to cap them at 54 for both men and women. Currently, the max is 36.4 for men and 40.4 for women. Additionally, while under the current system a score achieved under perfect conditions carried the same weight as a score made in foul weather, under the new system an algorithm will take into account weather and course conditions. And instead of being adjusted twice a month as has been the case, the new handicap will adjust on a daily basis. Under the new system, blow-up holes could become a thing of the past. Clubs are being urged to ensure that new golfers with higher handicaps pick up when they reach the maximum hole score – net double bogey – and maintain a good pace of play. Both recreational and tournament rounds will be counted for handicap purposes. In a statement explaining the reasons for the change, Martin Slumbers, chief executive of the R&A, said golf is increasingly an international game and a single system was needed that embraces all golfers. Mike Davis, CEO of the USGA,
similarly said a single set of handicap rules “will connect golfers from country to country,” and that by making handicaps easier to obtain more golfers who didn’t think they were good enough to bother in the past will be moved to get them. For American golfers, the new system won’t be a jarring change. The World Handicap System will look and feel much like the current USGA system, and it is expected that most players will not see their number change much under the new system. “A lot of golfers won’t notice,” said Rob Jansen, executive director of the Wisconsin State Golf Association. “You shouldn’t see a huge change in your index when the World Handicap System goes into effect.” A player who knows nothing about the new system might not even notice the change. But, Jansen said, because the handicap will be updated daily it will be “important for players to post the day they play” to keep their index current. The USGA and the R&A have developed a series of videos, infographics and other material to inform golfers what to expect from the new system. For more information, or to view a video featuring Annika Sorenstam, Gary Player and recreational golfers from around the world, visit whs.com.

WISCONSIN GOLF HALL OF FAME
Accomplishments plenty for hall’s newest inductees – GARY D’AMATO
T
wo of Wisconsin’s best players from 1993 through 2006 and one of the state’s most popular and accomplished club professionals are the newest additions to the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame. “Wow, what an honor,” said Ben Walter, a three-time State Open champion who led the University of Wisconsin to backto-back Big Ten titles in 1993 and 1994. Walter entered the Hall of Fame with left-hander Ryan Quinn of Galesville, the only golfer to win back-to-back State Amateur titles (2001-2002) during the stroke-play era, and Erin Hills ambassador Rich Tock, whose resume is filled with accomplishments in all facets of the game. “I wish I still had my old tenacity,” said Quinn, 41, who lives in Bloomington, Ill., where he is a claims representative for State Farm Insurance. “It wasn’t always pretty, but nobody wanted to win more than I did.” In addition to his State Amateur titles, Quinn had a near-miss in his bid for a third consecutive championship at Blue Mound Golf and Country Club in 2003 and was a WIAA champion at Gale-Ettrick-Trempeleau High School and an NCAA Division III Championship runner-up at UW-Eau Claire. In 2001, he swept the WSGA BestBall title (with partner Paul Williamson), the WSGA Match Play title (thrashing Joe Leonard, 6 and 5, in the final) and the State Am at Eau Claire Country Club. He remains the only golfer who has won those three titles in a calendar year. Quinn turned professional and won three times on the Dakotas Tour. He twice made it to the second stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament and missed the final stage one year by one shot. “He may be the best left-handed
2019 Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame inductees are, from left, Ryan Quinn, Rich Tock and Ben Walter. golfer ever to come out of Wisconsin,” said Gene Haas, retired executive director of the Wisconsin State Golf Association, which hosted the induction ceremony. Walter, 48, a Menomonie native and now a residential real estate agent in Phoenix/Scottsdale, also had a sterling playing record. He won the Big Ten individual title in 1994, opening 65-65 and setting the conference’s 36- and 54-hole scoring records. While at Wisconsin, he won the Ray Fischer 72-hole Amateur Championship and was the 1993 WSGA Player of the Year. Walter played on the Canadian Tour from 1996 to 1999, finishing in the top 10 on the Order of Merit in 1998, and played in the Greater Milwaukee Open three times. He recently was inducted into the UW Athletic Hall of Fame and credited former Badgers coach Dennis Tiziani for much of his success. “I got my undergraduate degree at Wisconsin,” Walter said, “and I got
my master’s in golf at Cherokee (Country Club).” Tock, 69, a member of the Wisconsin PGA Section for more than 40 years, has been an excellent player, a highly regarded teacher, a former president of the WPGA Section, a volunteer on numerous committees, a mentor to countless young pros and a tireless promoter of the game. “Rich has been the ultimate promoter, not like P.T. Barnum but kind of like him,” joked Tock’s presenter, longtime section pro Jim Thompson. Tock, in his typical exuberant style, brought down the house several times during his acceptance speech and was accorded a standing ovation. In congratulating Walter and Quinn, the 26-time Nelthorpe Cup participant said, “I competed against them many times. I never lost. I should probably point out they were in grade school at the time.” The inductions bring to 96 the number of members of the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame. 2020 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook | 57
