Welcome to the 2017 season

W

elcome to the 2017 Wisconsin Golf Yearbook, which continues a great partnership between the Wisconsin State Golf Association and Killarney Golf Media Inc. It was noted on the cover, but bears repeating, that it is a historic year for golf in Wisconsin. A big reason for that is obviously the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills. While Wisconsin has had its fair share of recent major FKDPSLRQVKLSV WKLV ZLOO EH WKH Ć“UVW WLPH WKH U.S. Open visits Wisconsin. There is a great feature story on page 14 for more information. Other highlights of the professional golf schedule in Wisconsin include a new LPGA event coming to the Green Bay area (page 16) and the likely debuts of Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly at the Madison-area PGA Tour Champions event (page 15). While all of these great events are fun for spectators, the opening of Sand Valley Golf Resort is generating a different kind of excitement for those eager to play Wisconsin’s newest gem (page 17). This publication is about more than just the big professional events in the state. Most of the pages are dedicated to the courses, players and amateur events that make Wisconsin great. The 2017 WSGA schedule again features top courses from around the state and events for players of all abilities. The best players in the state will be competing at the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship sponsored by West Bend Insurance at Oconomowoc Golf Club in July (page 12), but competitive “netâ€? events throughout the summer offer a great opportunity for the higher-handicap golfers to have fun and win their own ‘Championship’ as well.

onald Ross designed golf courses, as his legend goes, with the belief that golf should be a pleasure, not a penance. That thinking will be put to the supreme test in 2017 when his 101-yearold work at Oconomowoc Golf Club plays host to the 116th Wisconsin State Amateur Championship, sponsored by West Bend Insurance. From July 17 through 20, the 156 golfers in the State $P Ć“HOG ZLOO VHH IRU WKHPVHOYHV KRZ Ross, working with the natural terrain left behind by glacial formations thousands of years ago, created a course far more demanding than its 6,423 yards and par 70 would lead even the state’s best amateur golfers to believe. beware,’â€? said Chuck Wood, the head professional at Oconomowoc. “It is not an overly lengthy course, but angles are extremely important. You could be in play, but not have a good angle. ... Indeed, Oconomowoc GC has held its own as host of previous WSGA gatherings for the state’s top amateur golfers. During the 2012 U.S. Amateur Qualifying, there were 136 rounds played by the 68 golfers who completed 36 holes (another 15 withdrew over the course of the long day). There were

In 2016, there were 168 golfers competing in the stroke-play qualifying for 64 match-play berths at the WSGA State Match Play Championship. Only four broke par, led by 2012 WIAA Division 3 state champion Josh Smith (67) of Hazel Green and Marquette golfer Charlie Maleki (68) of Mequon. The course proved to be a fantastic match-play venue. the 18th green. “And it’s not just a slow ascent,” Wood said. “It’s more billy-goat-ish up-and-down. That kind of rigor, if you are walking, can be exhausting.” When the State Am hits town in July, though, that physical challenge doesn’t necessarily favor the younger golfers. There is still a mental challenge with ZKLFK WKH ƓHOG PXVW FRQWHQG 0RUH often than not, that plays to the strength of the more experienced JROIHUV LQ WKH ƓHOG “The guy who is the most patient and makes some putts is the guy who is going to win, be it someone who is younger or a guy who is older,” Wood said. “Out here, you have to hit a variety of shots. I know from personal experience that if there is a (particular) weakness in your game, ... somehow this course will expose it.” And, his mantra notwithstanding, Donald Ross would be the one taking great pleasure in knowing, a century later, his design still stands the test of time.

uch of the U.S. Open’s rich, 116year history has been recorded at historic golf courses such as Oakmont, Baltusrol, Oakland Hills, Merion, Pebble Beach, Winged Foot and Shinnecock Hills. “We have played many U.S. Opens at those venues,â€? said Jeff Hall, the United States Golf Association’s managing director of rules and open championships, calling them “tried and trueâ€? venues. “It’s pretty neat when you can Ć“QG RQH WKDWĹ?V QHZ DQG H[FLWLQJ Ĺ? That’s how Erin Hills near Hartford is being described as it gets set to become just the 52nd course to play host to the U.S. Open. It is only the third new venue to be added to the rotation since 2000, joining Chambers Bay (2015), Torrey Pines (2008) and Bethpage State Park’s Black Course (2009, 2002). In addition, Erin Hills EHFRPHV WKH Ć“UVW JROI FRXUVH LQ :LVconsin to host the nation’s championship. “It’s a tremendous honor,â€? John Morrissett, competitions director at Erin Hills, said of having the U.S. Open played on Wisconsin fairways from June 15 through 18. “To host the VWDWHĹ?V Ć“UVW 8 6 2SHQ LV EH\RQG KXPbling. The course will not re-open for public play until early July, several weeks after defending champion Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and others have had a chance to put it to the championship test. “That is a tremendous, tremendous EHQHĆ“W WR XV Ĺ? Indeed, perhaps the biggest challenge facing Erin Hills and the USGA is how the course comes out of the winter.

> Erin Hills U.S. OPEN “Being this far north, your window coming out in the spring from the time the grass starts growing until the actual championship is shorter than it would be at a Pinehurst or a Pebble Beach,� said Bevard, noting that the USGA deals with varying degrees of turfgrass stress leading up to every U.S. Open. “At Congressional CC (near Washington, D.C.) in 2011, they had the hottest recorded temperatures ever in the month of June the week before the U.S. Open and then we had all the rain. This far north, we certainly don’t expect that to happen.� This is the third USGA event to be held at Erin Hills, which hosted the 2008 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links and the 2011 U.S. Amateur. In addition, Erin Hills was the site of the 2015 Wisconsin State Amateur and an annual collegiate event hosted by Marquette University. The U.S. Open promises to test Erin Hills at a whole new level, a delicate responsibility shared by Morrissett with input from his staff and Hall and his staff at the USGA. “We push the golf course to test these players; there’s not doubt about it,� Hall acknowledged. “Firm and fast. But we accept that responsibility. “If we’re in control of the water, it will play how we want it to play. I think our attention to detail with respect to the presentation of the golf course has

really improved over the last decade. Some of that is the collaboration within the USGA and certainly the collaboration with our host venues. We’re working with them farther in advance just to make sure we’re on the same page, just so there is no misunderstanding that this is what we want to get to. “And then (we) let our experts work with their experts on how to get there.â€? he inaugural American Family Insurance Championship created so many enduring memories last June when the PGA Tour Champions event debuted in Madison. There was Monday’s Executive Women’s Day featuring model/actress Kathy Ireland to kick off tournament week. The First Tee of South Central Wisconsin Youth Clinic, attended by more than 300 junior golfers, highlighted Tuesday activities at University Ridge. The ProAm Pairings Party that night on the rooftop garden at Monona Terrace convention center, saw golfer John Daly perform with local band Madison County and former New York Yankees star Derek Jeter rubbing elbows with tournament supporters. Two days of pro-am activities at University Ridge Golf Course helped tournament sponsors get to know the PGA Tour Champions golfers and those golfers get to know the course. The Saturday celebrity foursome featuring former Packers Brett Favre and Mark Tauscher, two-time U.S. Open champion Andy North and tournament

host Steve Stricker was a huge success. “There were so many things around the golf that were so special,” American Family CEO Jack Salzwedel told an audience recently at a function to reveal that the event raised a staggering $1,089,500 for charity, more than half of which went to the American Family Children’s Hospital. “Actually, for me, the golf tournament was almost secondary.” Indeed, that Kirk Triplett rallied from WKUHH VWURNHV EDFN RQ WKH ƓQDO GD\ WR beat Mike Goodes and Bart Bryant by two strokes almost got lost in the overwhelming buzz the tournament created. More than 56,000 fans from 26 states attended the tournament during its three-day run while some 1,200 volunteers donated their time to the event, which had a local economic impact of nearly $12 million. Still, there was something the 2016 Am Fam Championship didn’t have that the 2017 tournament, set for June 23-25, will. them eligible for the PGA Tour’s senior circuit. Kelly plans to play almost exclusively on the PGA Tour Champions in 2017 while Stricker, who will serve as U.S. captain for the Presidents Cup matches, will split time between the regular and senior tours. > Kirk Triplett

“That’s the unique thing about the (PGA Tour) Champions is that there is new blood every year,” Stricker said. “There are new guys turning 50 every year. That’s the exciting thing for our tournament, there will be new guys coming here every year.” Kelly joined Daly, Craig Parry, Jose Maria-Olazabal and Billy Mayfair among those PGA Tour veterans turning 50 in 2016. In 2017, Stricker joins the likes of David Toms and Steve Flesch and he hopes response from the inaugural HYHQW ZLOO PDNH D GHHS ƓHOG HYHQ deeper. “The players who didn’t come, some have already told me they are looking forward to coming (in 2017),” Stricker said, naming Fred Couples and Tom Watson among those who weren’t able to make it. As for Salzwedel, he knows it will be tough for the Am Fam Championship — sandwiched between the U.S. Open at Erin Hills near Milwaukee and the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic near Green Bay on the state golf schedule — to top its opening act. “It’s hard to look at this tournament and think of one thing that didn’t go fantastic,” he said. “I’m sure we’ll have some changes for 2017, but it really was tremendous.” 2017 Wisconsin Golf Yearbook | 15

On the LPGA schedule, the $2 million event is sandwiched between two major championships. It will follow the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and precede the U.S. Women’s Open in 2017. Ginter, Roesch honored

T

he two newest members of the Wisconsin State Golf Association Hall of Fame enjoy giving back to the game that has had such a profound impact on their lives. Sue Ginter and David Roesch, who have earned numerous honors on amateur and professional golf circuits, have become highly respected golf instructors. “It’s great to be connected to golf, giving back to the game.â€? Ginter said. “I enjoy sharing the game with people and making it easier for them.â€? Roesch echoed those comments. “I love seeing people play better,â€? he said. “I love seeing people improve, the smiles on their faces.â€? Ginter, 50, is an Appleton native. As a teenager she took the Wisconsin golf scene by storm. When she was 17 Ginter won the Wisconsin Women’s State Golf Association match play and stroke play titles. She also took home the Wisconsin PGA junior title and was the WIAA girls individual champion playing for Appleton West. After playing collegiately at the University of Texas, where she was named all-American in 1988, Ginter turned pro in 1989. As a professional, Ginter won seven times on the Futures (now Symetra) Tour and also won state open titles in Wisconsin, Florida and Connecticut. She also played two seasons on the Ladies Asian Golf Tour and the Ladies European Tour. Ginter played eight seasons on the LPGA 7RXU ZKHUH VKH KDG WZR WRS Ć“QLVKHV She now lives in Jupiter, Florida, and is a teaching pro at Jupiter Hills Club. 5RHVFK OLYHV LQ *HUPDQWRZQ DQG LV D Ć“[WXUH RQ WKH :LVFRQsin golf scene. The former University of Wisconsin golfer was the WSGA’s golfer of the year in 1997. After turning professional, he won the 2004 Wisconsin State Open and also that same year he made the cut in WKH 8 6 2SHQ DW 6KLQQHFRFN +LOOV HYHQWXDOO\ Ć“QLVKLQJ VW Roesch played on the Nationwide (now Web.com) Tour in 2006 and 2008. He won the Wisconsin PGA Section match play titles three consecutive years - 2013-’15 - and also added the WPGA Championship to his resume in 2015. His efforts as a golf instructor also have earned him accolades. He was named Wisconsin PGA Section Teacher of the Year in 2013. The two were inducted into the hall during ceremonies last winter. The WSGA established the Hall of Fame in 1964 as a way to KRQRU ERWK DPDWHXU DQG SURIHVVLRQDO JROIHUV IRU WKHLU VLJQLĆ“FDQW contributions to the game of golf in Wisconsin.

Foundation grants to EHQHĆ“W JROI SURJUDPV

ecords are made to be broken and so it is for the Wisconsin State Golf Association Foundation grants. Fifty-six high school golf programs will be the recipients of a record $65,600 in grants to be disbursed by the Foundation. The grants help the programs to pay for practice times, greens fees for matches, assistant coach stipends and other expenses to ensure player costs remain low and to encourage participation. The WSGA Foundation also pays the green fees annually at the WIAA state high school golf championships. The WSGA Foundation was established in 2005 to promote and preserve the game of golf in Wisconsin and provide funds for those purposes, including assisting high school programs. The WSGA )RXQGDWLRQ LV D WD[ H[HPSW QRW IRU SURĆ“W HQWLW\ WKDW is primarily funded through individual donations and an annual golf outing. The eighth annual outing is planned for Sept. 25 at Chenequa Country Club and The Legend at Bristlecone in Hartland. To date, the outings have raised nearly $500,000 for the Foundation.
