Welcome to the 2018 season

W

elcome to the 2018 Wisconsin Golf Yearbook, a joint venture between the Wisconsin State Golf Association and Killarney Golf Media Inc. Last year was a historic year for golf in Wisconsin, highlighted by the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills, but the future looks just as bright. Sand Valley Golf Resort continues to generate national buzz for Wisconsin and will officially open its second course, Mammoth Dunes, along with a 17-hole short course called The Sandbox in 2018. Professional golf is thriving with annual stops by the PGA Tour Champions near Madison and the LPGA in the Green Bay area. The countdown is officially on for the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits, as well. But this publication is about more than just the big professional events in the state. Most of the pages are dedicated to the courses, players and amateur events that make Wisconsin special. The 2018 WSGA schedule again features top courses from around the state and events for players of all abilities. Competitive “net” events throughout the summer offer a great opportunity for the higher handicap golfers to have fun and win a trophy of their own. Meanwhile, the best players in the state will be competing for the biggest trophy of all at the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship sponsored by West Bend Mutual Insurance at Minocqua Country Club in July (page 18). Minocqua CC is a hidden gem amongst the great public and private golf courses in Wisconsin that many players will play for the first time this year. And, for anyone looking for a new course to try, you’ve come to the right place.

MILESTONE IN MENASHA

North Shore marks its 90th birthday as State Open host WRITTEN BY ROB HERNANDEZ

W

hen the last gathering of the state’s top golfers wrapped up its business at North Shore Golf Club in Menasha, former Marquette golfer Nick Nelson rode off into the sunset with his first Wisconsin State Amateur Championship. Actually, Nelson was still on about the 16th hole when the sun set over Lake Winnebago as officials tried to beat darkness in finishing the rain-delayed final round of the 2016 State Am. By the time he holed out on No. 18 for a three-stroke victory over Thomas Longbella of Chippewa Falls, it was so dark that the collection of current and former Golden Eagles who helped Nelson celebrate his victory on the green could not be seen, only heard. “It was something out of the movies,” Glenn Fischer, the director of golf at North Shore, recalled recently. “It was

10 | The Voice of Golf in Wisconsin

so much fun watching that final group come down the 18th hole and trying to get light out there as much as possible. … It’s still talked about.” Shooting will resume in August for the final installment of the North Shore trilogy.

Mackenzie Tour/PGA Tour-Canada golfer Jordan Niebrugge of Mequon won the WSGA State Match Play Championship in 2013. Nelson took the State Amateur in 2016 before returning to Marquette in the fall to begin law school, eschewing ideas of

turning pro. Now, the venerable club on Lake Winnebago’s northern shores will celebrate its 90th birthday by playing host to the 2018 Wisconsin State Open Championship.

It was something out of the movies. It was so much fun watching that final group come down the 18th hole and trying to get light out there as much as possible. … It’s still talked about.” – GLENN FISCHER, DIRECTOR OF GOLF AT NORTH SHORE

North Shore GC

With darkness setting in, Thomas Longbella watches his drive on the 17th hole during the 2016 State Amateur Championship. Eventual winner Nick Nelson is in the picture foreground.

It will be the 98th playing of the Wisconsin PGA’s marquee event, which brings together the state’s top club and mini-tour professionals plus the best amateurs. The field will include two-time State Open champs Ryan Helminen, a teaching pro at Ridgeway Country Club in Neenah and a North Shore member; and 2017 WPGA player of the year Jim Schuman, whose two State Open wins came on classic layouts at Kenosha Country Club (1996) and Pine Hills Country Club in Sheboygan (1999) and is playing the best golf of

his career at age 54. “People who have played here more often will have an upper hand,” Fischer said. “Ryan being a member here and playing here often, he knows the ins and outs of the golf course. Nothing will be a big surprise for him. I expect he will fare well. As far as any mini-tour players that might come back, they’re going to have to have their A-game and be really creative. If it’s firm and fast, they might be a little surprised at how challenging it can be.” Fischer said his club has been

motivated to keep its 6,600-yard layout in pristine shape during its five-year commitment to hosting the state’s three biggest golf tournaments. The condition of its fairways and greens have been exceptional and drawn praise from the golfers who have competed at North Shore. Most recently, according to Fischer, the club has done “some clean-up work” on its tee boxes. Off the golf course, work will be finished this spring on an expansion of the clubhouse patio that looks out over Lake Winnebago. “We are constantly tweaking an already excellent product,” Fischer said, comparing the course to the famed Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. “The greens and grounds crew is phenomenal. They are constantly, constantly improving the course. It’s really fun to see it grow and get better and better. “It never gets old playing here. The members are excited (to host the State Open). The staff in the pro shop is excited. And I’m excited.” 2018 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook | 11

Sand Valley Golf Resort

THE PLACE TO BE

Wisconsin shines as leading golf destination WRITTEN BY DENNIS McCANN

A

s general manager of the new and widely praised Sand Valley Golf Resort, Glen Murray saw all manner of groups make their way to rural Adams County in 2017 – on couples’ trips, family trips, corporate excursions and, of course, buddy trips. But there are buddy trips, and then there are buddy trips. Murray said one that stood out included a group of golfers who flew to Wisconsin and then to Sand Valley for golf before flying out later for a Packers game in Green Bay. They flew back to Sand Valley for more golf, then winged away again to Minneapolis for more football before returning to Sand Valley for yet more golf. “The jet set crowd,” Murray said, “certainly travels different than the rest of us.” Of course, most golf pilgrims who come to Wisconsin travel far more modestly. But travel here they do in ever-increasing numbers, drawn by the 12 | The Voice of Golf in Wisconsin

rising buzz about our growing stable of bucket-list courses and enticed by a string of televised major tournaments that have teased millions of golf fans with sun-kissed images of centerfold golf courses. Wisconsin’s steady climb as a golf destination has been decades in the making. When SentryWorld opened in 1982 with its signature flower hole par 3, it became the state’s first true destination course. Herb Kohler developed Blackwolf Run, raising the bar on high-end golf in the state, and later doubled down with two courses at Whistling Straits. Kohler courses have hosted multiple national tournaments. Erin Hills was just five years old when it was named as the site of the 2017 U.S. Open, which took place just as Sand Valley opened the first of two highly anticipated courses. And those are all frosting on a layer cake of travelerworthy courses including Lawsonia, University Ridge, The Bog, The Bull at

Blackwolf Run

Pinehurst Farms, Wild Rock, the Lake Geneva area and more. Lots of places in the United States offer tempting opportunities for golf but the number and variety of highend layouts in Wisconsin can stand with – and even above – any other. In 2017, Golf Advisor named Wisconsin the number one golf destination, ahead of such dimple-centric sites as Central Florida, Indiana, Phoenix-

Scottsdale and – wait for it – Ireland. “Wisconsin is only getting deeper with bucket-list golf,” Golf Advisor wrote. “Central Wisconsin is set to boom as the Midwest’s next hot golf destination.” It wasn’t the only lavish praise rained on America’s Dairyland in 2017. At golf.com, in a story naturally headlined “The Big Cheese,” Coleman McDowell said most golf meccas are on either coast, limiting accessibility for many. But not Wisconsin. “OK, it doesn’t have Pebble Beach. Or any beach at all, really. So what does Wisconsin have? Major-championship chops, enough sand dunes to give Shivas Irons the shivers and, most importantly, a sweet spot smack in the middle of the country.”

SentryWorld

Redburn seemed to think so, quoting Josh Lesnik of KemperSports as saying, “There’s already great golf in Wisconsin. But soon golfers will look to Wisconsin as a place like Scotland or western Ireland, where they can go for a week and, within a short drive, play someplace special every day.” In the Wall Street Journal – surely the bible for well-heeled business golfers – no question mark was needed for a headline declaring “Wisconsin Becomes a Golf Destination.” On the eve of the U.S. Open at Erin Hills, the Journal’s Brian Costa wrote, “The newest American golf hot spot has late springs, early falls and frigid winters. It is neither very wealthy nor very populous. Yet in the last 20 years, Wisconsin has gone from a completely unremarkable golf state to a frequent host of major tournaments and a destination for golf travel.” The benefits of such attention extend beyond major-tournament sites. Craig Haltom of the Madisonbased Oliphant Companies recently oversaw extensive improvements at Lawsonia’s Links Course and said the resulting increase in play at the venerable Green Lake resort was in part due to the rising attention paid

Erin Hills

As any good infomercial would say, but wait – there’s more. Golf Channel travel editor Matt Ginella similarly praised our greens and fairways, calling Wisconsin a prime spot for golf groups for its “depth of courses, value, prestige and Lake Michigan…” The headline on a New York Times travel section story in May asked “Can Sand Valley Make Wisconsin the Next Golfing Destination?” Writer Tom

Wisconsin’s superstar courses. “What we’re seeing now is that people are coming to Lawsonia for the first time as they’re coming to play Erin Hills, Kohler and now Sand Valley,” Haltom said. “It’s great, and what I think all these places are seeing is the more, the better…we’re getting a lot of people in Wisconsin to play those world class courses. When you stop and think what’s happened in the state

the last four or five years, this could be the number one destination for summer golf trips.” A few years ago Jason Kauflin created Wisconsin Golf Trips in hopes of riding that wave. Knowing that a U.S. Open televised around the world in 2017 would draw golfers’ eyes to Wisconsin, and anticipating many would be coming to play as well, he began offering custom golf packages – including tee times, lodging, travel and more – to visiting groups. And Kauflin said his instinct, that Wisconsin’s higher golf profile would make it a stronger magnet, was spot on. “The answer is absolutely yes,” he said. “Groups that have not considered us before are putting Wisconsin at the top of the list.” One big reason is that almost all of Wisconsin’s most highly rated courses are public, if also pricey. But Kauflin said for many long-term buddy groups that seems not to be a significant barrier. He booked one group of 12 golfers, all from the East Coast, for a trip to Wisconsin that will set them back about $42,000, before food and drink. His average quote is “right around 2,500 bucks a guy,” he said, and bookings for 2018 are already shaping up nicely. “Going into 2017, a little over a year ago, I maybe had one or two leads on my desk. Fast forward to right now, I’ve got 10 groups booked for 2018. These groups are coming in and spending lots of money. These are world travelers that are finding us for the first time.” And, the attention being paid Wisconsin isn’t likely to fade anytime soon. Kohler is looking at building a fifth course along the shore of Lake Michigan, Sand Valley’s second course, Mammoth Dunes, will officially open in 2018 and is already a contender for top golf course listings in the future. A third Sand Valley course is in the works. And in 2020 the Ryder Cup will be played at Whistling Straits, ensuring once again the eyes of the golf world – not to mention its TV cameras - will be focused on Wisconsin golf. You can’t buy that kind of attention. But these days, Wisconsin doesn’t need to. 2018 Wisconsin.Golf Yearbook | 13

Thornberry Creek

PICTURE LOOKS PROMISING

Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic gets set for year two WRITTEN BY ROB HERNANDEZ

W

hile he poured over most of the nearly 29,000 photos taken of the inaugural Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic this past summer, Josh Doxtator saw something special on almost every one. “To see the smiles on some of the kids’ faces and things like that was incredible,” said Doxtator, the chief operating officer at Thornberry Creek at Oneida Golf Course near Green Bay. “You could see how important it was for them to be here, to be a part of that and to see the fun they had throughout the week. You go through (the photos) and you can see it. You can feel it. “It brings back that feeling that ‘Man, it was an incredible week. It was an exciting week.’” Indeed, despite being at the back end of a historic summer of golf in Wisconsin and despite being sandwiched between two major championships on the LPGA Tour calendar, the return of women’s professional golf to Wisconsin — now annually — was an unqualified success. More than 62,000 fans turned out during the week to watch Australian Katherine Kirk hold off Ashleigh Buhai by one stroke to win the Sky Woman Trophy, specially commissioned to reflect the heritage of the sponsoring Oneida Nation tribe and celebrate the strength in women. That total was within the 60,000 to 80,000 fans an average first-year LPGA event typically draws. According to Doxtator, there were more than 3,300 stories written about the tournament in 45 countries. He said there were more than 268,000 viewers each day on Golf Channel. “For me, it was everything we wanted and more,” tournament director Kelly McAnally said. “But, from my standpoint, the biggest compliment I received from players and others was it didn’t look like a first-year event. That’s huge and it really helps us set a foundation for future years.” For Doxtator, McAnally and their staff, it will be a lot easier to look ahead with one year of results under their belts.

14 | The Voice of Golf in Wisconsin

What worked? What didn’t? What can be improved? What can be changed? Logistically, changes will be made to reflect spectator patterns during the inaugural year. There were bottlenecks of fans trying to get across Thornberry Creek Drive from the first two holes to the rest of the course and from No. 17 to the par-4 finishing hole running back up the hill to the clubhouse that will be addressed. The location of concession areas on the 17th hole will also be altered in response to the wildly successful “party deck” concept where spectators received $2 brats and $2 beers every time a golfer recorded a birdie on the 196-yard par 3. “We knew that people would be excited about $2 beers and $2 brats, but we didn’t think people would be trampled to get (them),” Doxtator joked, noting that fans in skyboxes there had to exit the suites to get to the concession area. “We’ll work on building a structure big enough to house its own bar and concession area inside so they don’t have to leave the structure to get it.” Another picture that gave Doxtator reason to smile was one of the second hole. It showed fans lining the cart path the entire length of the 150-yard hole and then wrapping the green. “It was an incredible shot,” he said. “You’re like: ‘This is a major event happening here.’” Perhaps the only element of the event that kept it from being a truly major event was the field. While the inaugural tournament drew 66 of the top 100 golfers in the Rolex World Rankings, according to Doxtator, it lacked many of the game’s marquee names. Brooke Henderson, Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park, Suzann Pettersen, Charley Hull and then world No. 2 Ariya Jutanugarn drew the largest galleries and Wisconsin golfers Casey Danielson of Osceola — making her LPGA debut — and LPGA rookie Allyssa Ferrell of Edgerton garnered their share of attention,

too, but falling between the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and the U.S. Women’s Open kept the event from landing the likes of Lexi Thompson, Michelle Wie and Danielle Kang. The LPGA Tour schedule will aid the tournament’s recruiting efforts in 2018. The U.S. Women’s Open will be played in May this year and the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship will again be played near Chicago — but at Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Kildeer, much closer to the Wisconsin border — and officials hope that will result in a deeper field at Thornberry Creek the following week. “It certainly helps not having the U.S. Women’s Open the week after us and still staying at the $2 million purse,” McAnally said, noting that the Marathon Classic in Toledo, Ohio, will follow the Thornberry event this coming summer. “Being in Chicago the week before us, I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t want to be here. The purse is there. The hospitality is there.” Doxtator said: “If we can get to the 85 mark (of the top 100 golfers), we’ll be in really good shape.” All things considered, though, the tournament emerged from its first year in great shape.Thornberry Creek’s status as the official golf course of the Green Bay Packers fostered a natural partnership and led to one of the biggest events of the week. In fact, its pro-am pairings party at historic Lambeau Field earned the tournament “event-of-the-year” 2018 MEDIA KIT honors at the LPGA Tour’s season-ending Rolex Awards Banquet in Naples, Florida, in late November.

Australia’s Katherine Kirk was the winner by one stroke at the inaugural classic.

“It certainly helps being the official golf course of the Packers,” McAnally said. “It’s also nice to not feel like you’re competing against them, either. Being that first week of July, we’re right between the two training camps. … From a media side of thing is where we really thrived. “That week, every outlet is focused on us and allows us to tell our story, instead of getting lost in the (NFL) Draft and all of that fun stuff. We love our Packers, but we also love our Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic, too.” And, in 2017 at least, there were pictures to prove it.

The list of champions from the first three years of the PHC Classic has spanned the globe. American Annie Park won in 2015. Laura Gonzalez Escallon of Colombia won in 2016. And Canadian Brittany Marchand captured the title in 2017. Whose career will get a boost in the fourth year of the Symetra Tour event? That will be determined Aug. 4 through 6 when the developmental circuit for the LPGA Tour returns to Brown Deer Park Golf Course with 144 golfers competing for the $15,000 top prize in the $100,000 event. In 2017, Marchand shot rounds of 71-64-68 to edge France’s Marion Ricordeau by three shots. The event served as a qualifier for the Evian Championship, the final major championship of the season on the LPGA Tour, in France in September. Osceola native and Stanford grad Casey Danielson cashed her first professional check at the 2017 PHC Classic. She shot 76-67-67 and made $1,432 by tying for 14th. Edgerton’s Allyssa Ferrell shot 73-71-70 and tied for 37th. Madison’s Jessie Gerry, Waunakee’s Lisbeth Brooks and Altoona’s Gabby Curtis all missed the cut.

NORTHWOODS’ ‘HIDDEN GEM’

Minocqua CC puts out State Am welcome mat WRITTEN BY ROB HERNANDEZ

F

rom the time it opened in 1916 as a quiet, nine-hole golf course nestled deep in Wisconsin’s tranquil Northwoods, Minocqua Country Club has always been a destination golf course — in its own way. For most of its existence, the private club overlooking Lake Minocqua has been a destination that its summer visitors — many from the Chicago area — look forward to each year as they escape the bustle of daily life. Play a little golf. Enjoy a little boating. Just rest and relax. Since 2001, however, Minocqua CC’s profile in the Wisconsin golf community has been on the rise. A $2 million renaissance — the club’s response to sagging membership in the late 1990s that left it with fewer than 100 members — led to an expansion to 18 holes under the direction of designer Ron Garl, who has done more than 250 courses worldwide, most of them in Florida. Response to Garl’s work has created a buzz among golfers who have had

the opportunity to play the 6,739-yard private course. They are finding a way to get onto Minocqua CC when they are in the area to play the long-standing list of can’t-miss public courses that has grown to include nearby Timber Ridge Golf Club, St. Germain Golf Club, Eagle River Golf Course, Trout Lake Golf Club in Woodruff and Northwood Golf Club in Rhinelander. However, this summer Minocqua CC will have the opportunity to distinguish itself from the rest when it plays host to the 117th Wisconsin State Amateur Championship sponsored by West Bend Mutual Insurance from July 23 through 26. It will be the furthest north that Wisconsin’s premier amateur event has ever ventured and only the second time in tournament history it will be played north of Highway 29 — the major thoroughfare in northern Wisconsin that runs from River Falls through Green Bay, connecting the Mississippi River with Lake Michigan — and first since the 1978 State Am

at Wausau Country Club. “The golf course is unbelievable,” said Dave Kemnitz, the head professional at Minocqua CC for the past three years. “It’s one of the best golf courses in the state that I’ve played. The (State Am) players are in for a treat and that’s what everyone is so excited about — seeing these great players take on the course and seeing how the course holds up. … The big thing for us is the opportunity to showcase the course. We are kind of a hidden gem in the state.” Vision of something big Some of the same members who convinced the WSGA to bring its premier event to the heart of one of Wisconsin’s favorite vacationland destinations led to the decision to grow the course to 18 holes during the late 1990s, which enhanced Minocqua CC’s reputation virtually overnight. That came about the same time Timber Ridge was transitioning from a private club to a public facility, leaving

Minocqua without an 18-hole private facility for its summer guests. Meanwhile, Minocqua CC had seen its membership

website, that figure was reached Nov. 1 of that year through the financial commitment of 150 golfing members — achieved, according to documents, through deposits ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 between 1998 and 2001 — and additional pledges of $50,000 each from 10 others. According to Hopper, only 76 of the 110 golf and social members at the time were in favor of expansion. “So we basically had to get 80 new members to be able to start it,” he said. That was enough for the club to move forward and hire Garl, whose reputation in the design business, Hopper believes, helped the club reach its new-member goal in three weeks. Two of his Canadian projects in Ontario — Wooden Sticks Golf Club in Uxbridge and Taboo Golf Club in Gravenhurst — were named the best new course in Canada by Score Magazine in 2000 and 2004, respectively. His Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club in Florida, which featured eight

Nine sites to host State Am qualifying History suggests that the further away from Madison and Milwaukee the Wisconsin State Amateur ventures, the fewer the number of golfers who try to qualify for the event. With 250 miles between the WSGA headquarters in West Allis and Minocqua Country Club — site of the 117th State Am — never has that been more true than in 2018. However, the WSGA has taken at least one measure to entice amateur golfers across the state to take aim at a spot in the 156-player field. Six of the nine qualifying sites will be private clubs and the other three (Washington County Golf Course in Hartford, The Oaks Golf Course in Cottage Grove and Riverside Golf Course in Janesville) are among the best-conditioned public courses in their areas. dip to unprecedented lows and recognized it would be an enormous challenge to rebuild those numbers with an average, nine-hole course. “There were a few of us that felt if Minocqua CC hoped to be in existence in 10 years, they were going to have to move from a nine-hole course to 18,” said long-time member Bill Hopper, who led the effort with prominent Northwoods grocer and Minocqua CC member Trig Solberg. Shareholders in the club approved expansion plans in July of 1998, contingent upon the club raising $2 million to cover construction costs. According to a timeline of the club’s history on its

replica holes, played host to the LPGA Coates Golf Championship in 2015 and 2016. “We didn’t know if he’d even want to do the job,” Hopper said of Garl, who spent five days examining the property and couldn’t wait to get started on what would be a total makeover. “After walking all over the property, he was really excited about what could be developed.” ‘Balance in all the holes’ For Garl, converting Minocqua CC into an 18-hole, championship layout worthy of hosting a Wisconsin State Amateur wasn’t as simple as adding

2018 Preview nine holes to what was already there. He carved 12 new holes out of land across Golf View Drive from the original course on land donated to the club by Howard Young, one of the club’s co-founders who died in 1972 and bequeathed his entire estate to a medical center that still bears his name. Garl developed the other six holes on land on which the original nine sat as did the clubhouse, which remains.

Minocqua CC

“When I first went out there, … we wanted to save the classic feel of this golf course,” Garl said via telephone from his office in Lakeland, Florida. “We want to make sure strategy is the key to this golf course because that’s what classic golf is all about. To make that happen, I took the front nine and made them into six holes because (the original holes) were so short. “It’s a great combination because there is beautiful undulation up there. We wanted to build a course where, if you played it smart, you’d be rewarded. We wanted balance in all the holes.” Garl’s favorite holes are short par 4s and there are three under 355 yards on the scorecard at Minocqua CC. One — the 335-yard eighth hole tucked in the middle of the original layout — is named “Ike’s Favorite” and is a nod to former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was one of club founder Young’s closest friends and frequently spent time with him in the Minocqua area. “There is a lot of risk/reward in those, also — ‘Do I go for it? Do I lay it up short? How far do I lay it back?’” Garl said, noting that the hole distances on the scorecard are from the middle of each set of tees. “They can add a couple of hundred yards to what’s on the scorecard. On the par 3s, they’ll be 20 | The Voice of Golf in Wisconsin

able to play those anywhere from 120 up to 200 yards. There will be good balance in the par 3s. The par 5s, No. 12 (507 yards), for example, is a true reachable par 5. There are two where you ask yourself ‘Do I go for it or don’t I go for it?’ And then you have one (No. 15) where you say ‘I’m not going to go for this one no matter what. I’m going to play it smart.’” State Am will be ‘showcase’ And don’t expect it to be a birdie-fest when the State Am comes to Minocqua CC in July. The club has hosted three major events on the state calendar since officially expanding to 18 holes on July 4, 2001. Between 18 holes of stroke-play qualifying for the 2003 WSGA Senior Match Play Championship, two rounds at the 2006 WSGA Senior Amateur and 54 holes at the 2010 Wisconsin PGA Professionals Championship, there have been just two scores in the 60s — a pair of 69s in the first round of the club-pro championship recorded by Menasha’s Ryan Helminen (69-71-73) and Madison’s Rick Witt (69-74-73), who went on to finish 1-2. Minocqua CC is also been the home to the annual Dr. Kate Hospice Pro-Am. Over the last five years, there have been just four sub-70 rounds and Helminen has accounted for three of them. “The one thing I would reiterate to everybody that’s playing there is: Play it smart and show me how good your short game is and be rewarded for it,” Garl said. “There are some holes

where length is rewarded. There are some holes where strategy is rewarded. There are some holes that (say) ‘Show me how good you can hit your short irons.’ … What you’re going to find going to Minocqua CC is, boy, this is where golf should be today.” Indeed, Garl embraced the idea of the golf course being the focal point of the property and not the homes around it (none abut the golf course), and not the clubhouse, which has seen several renovations through the years but is otherwise largely as Eisenhower found it with a dining room that overlooks the lake, offering chicken dinner specials on Wednesdays and a Friday fish fry. “It’s a special place,” Kemnitz said. “It’s so peaceful. You’re in the Northwoods; you have such a great, natural setting with some of the water in play and the trees. It’s so beautiful, so serene.” But it promises to be all the State Am field can handle come July. “It’s very playable off the tee,” Kemnitz said, pointing out that the driving areas are more generous and the amount of room between the fairways and the treeline is greater than other courses in that part of the state. “I think that’s why the members like playing the golf course so much. You can get the ball in play and a lot of the difficulty comes around the greens — the putting surfaces with some of the undulations, the pin positions. That’s where a lot of the difficulty is found. It’s a great, great layout. It’s a great, great test.”

hen it comes to putting on a PGA Tour Champions event, tournament director Nate Pokrass and his American Family Insurance Championship staff sure seem to have the Midas touch. After all, who would have thought an exhibition foursome designed to give then-49-year-old tournament host Steve Stricker a chance to play nine holes in front of a gallery during the inaugural Am Fam Championship in 2016 would become an indispensable highlight on the Saturday marquee of the annual gathering at University Ridge? Granted, it didn’t hurt having former Packers quarterback Brett Favre as a cornerstone of the idea the first two years. Who knew that staging a Darius Rucker concert at the venerable Breese Stevens Field on Madison’s East Side would turn the tournament into a week-long, city-wide event? Or that having Stricker and fellow Madison golfer Jerry Kelly turn 50 would create

enough of a buzz around the second annual Am Fam Championship that it would help local golf fans turn their attention from the previous week’s U.S. Open down the road at Erin Hills so quickly? “The success the last two years has come together quicker than some of us anticipated,” Pokrass said recently. “It’s a testament to the state of Wisconsin and the Madison community. We all know the state is passionate about its golf and it certainly supported this event right off the bat, which is outstanding. Madison is the right community for the PGA Tour Champions.” Indeed, more than 65,000 fans from 27 states turned out during tournament week in the second year of the event. The 2017 Am Fam Championship raised $1.625 million for local charity — pushing the two-year total past $2.7 million. Approximately half of the proceeds ($815,000) will go to American Family Children’s Hospital with the rest being divided among

65 charities. In the meantime, as the tournament prepares for the final year of its threeyear deal with the PGA Tour, American Family Insurance and the University of Wisconsin, no changes to that grouping appear imminent. After talk of rotating the tournament between Milwaukee and Madison surfaced during the 2017 event, Pokrass put the idea to rest in early December when he told

Wisconsin.Golf that the PGA Tour, American Family and UW “are the only parties at the table” in negotiations for the next three-year contract, which was expected early in 2018. “That is not an immediate-future concept,” he said of the Madison/ Milwaukee rotation. “Madison has been extremely supportive of this as

a community. All the parties that have been involved have supported this to be in Madison. We would like to continue this as a home game. ... That is the intent. That is the plan. That is the direction we’re trying to move this as we move forward.” Looking back, the Am Fam Championship basked in the golfing glow left by the U.S. Open. As tournament officials had hoped, having Stricker and Kelly, who would go on to win twice on the PGA Tour Champions, finish seventh in the seasonlong Charles Schwab Cup points race and virtually lock up rookie-of-the-year

community event has connected with Wisconsin golf fans — even in a U.S. Open year. “We had great crowds again. Sponsorship grew. The volunteer support was extremely strong,” Pokrass said. “I think the U.S. Open lifted all of our voices. The world’s eyes were on the state of Wisconsin. People were thinking

Couples committed to the event hours before the deadline two weeks before the event and then went out and won the tournament. His bogey-free 66 in the final round gave him a two-shot win over Scott Verplank. “Having Fred Couples win it, it’s outstanding,” Pokrass said. “If you could look at the list (of players), there are a handful of names where you’d say ‘He’d be a great champion.’ Of course, you’re proud of whoever your champion is. … But to have it happen here and have it happen early for us, that helps from an awareness standpoint. For the core golf fan, they know the field is strong. But for the casual golf fan, they see Fred Couples win and that resonates with them.” Then again, virtually everything tournament officials have done to turn a 54-hole golf tournament into a

golf. It generated a lot of excitement. I think the U.S. Open amplified all of our efforts and we rode the momentum right into the following week.” So what will the Am Fam Championship do for an encore in 2018? That’s the question Pokrass and his staff are wrestling with — when they aren’t being asked who the musical act will be at Breese Stevens Field (yes, there will be one) or who will fill out Saturday’s celebrity foursome. “Our team likes the challenge,” Pokrass said. “We’re a competitive group. We take a lot of pride in it. It’s not going to be easy. But it’s always what is the next thing we can do? Topping Darius and topping (Derek) Jeter and Favre, it (won’t be) easy. We’ve got a good (staff) in place and we’re up for the challenge and, hopefully, we can put on an exciting show again in 2018.”

HALL OF FAME

Worthy trio earns honor T

hree individuals whose names resonate in their corner of the Wisconsin golf world are the most recent inductees to the Wisconsin State Golf Association Hall of Fame. Menasha club pro Ryan Helminen, Brookfield amateur Maggie Leef and Milwaukee golf writer Gary D’Amato comprised the Class of 2017 and bring to 92 the number of golfers enshrined into the WSGA Hall of Fame. The three were inducted Ryan Helminen during a ceremony in October at Blue Mound Golf and Country Club in Wauwatosa. Helminen, a former University of Wisconsin golfer, is a three-time qualifier into the PGA Championship based on his play at the PGA Professionals Championship. He is also an eight-time Wisconsin PGA Section player of the year and a two-time Wisconsin State Open champion and twice a winner of the TaylorMade National Championship at Pebble Beach GL in California. The teaching professional at Ridgeway CC in Gary D’Amato Neenah also holds eight course records. Leef has qualified for nearly 20 United States Golf Association championships and was medalist at four USGA qualifiers. She reached the round of 16 at the 2016 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and the quarterfinals at the 2015 U.S. Women’s Senior Amateur. Twice the Wisconsin Women’s State Golf Association player of the year and a fourtime winner of the WWSGA senior player-ofthe-year honor, most recently in 2016, Leef Maggie Leef is a two-time WWSGA match play champion, two-time WWSGA Mid-Amateur champion and three-time WWSGA Best-Ball champion. She also serves as a rules official for the WSGA. D’Amato started covering golf for The Milwaukee Journal in 1992, following in a line of familiar golf bylines that included Billy Sixty and Gary Van Sickle. He since has covered more than 70 major championships, including every Masters since 1993. Frequently recognized for his work in annual writing competition by Golf Writers Association of America, D’Amato is a three-time winner of the Wisconsin Sportswriter of the Year award from the National Sports Media Association and has earned numerous Associated Press Sports Editors, Milwaukee Press Club and Wisconsin Newspaper Association honors. He has also authored two golf books: “The Proof is in the Putting” with the late Jerry Korte, and “Erin Hills,” published last summer in conjunction with the U.S. Open held there and featuring the photography of local photographer Paul Hundley. The WSGA Hall of Fame was established in 1964 as a way to honor both amateur and professional golfers for their significant contributions to the game of golf in Wisconsin.

WSGA FOUNDATION

60 golf programs to get boost from Foundation A

t some high schools the grant helps to cover practice time fees. For others, it pays for an assistant coach, or perhaps, greens fees for matches. But whatever the purpose, the grants reflect the efforts of the Wisconsin State Golf Foundation and its sponsors to help promote the game of golf. For 2017, sixty Wisconsin high school golf programs (see list below) will receive more than $68,000 from the Foundation — a record dollar amount. Formed in 2005, the WSGA Foundation exists to preserve and promote the game of golf in Wisconsin and to provide funds for those purposes. The Foundation is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit entity. Each September the Foundation hosts its annual golf outing fundraiser. In 2017, the eighth annual outing held at Chenequa Country Club and Oconomowoc Golf Club generated a record $115,000. To date, the outings have raised more than $600,000. For more information, or to make a donation to the WSGA Foundation, visit www.wsga.org. ROAD TRIP No. 44

More golf than you can shake a 9-iron at. When it comes to championship golf, there’s no better destination than Alabama. Come play where the PGA TOUR professionals compete and see why Golf Digest editors picked two of Alabama’s golf resorts among their favorites. For starters there are the 468 holes along the world-renowned Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Stretching from the mountains in the north to the Gulf Coast in the south, America’s original golf trail opened 25 years ago and recently completed a massive renovation of its 26 courses. Then there are the many other impressive courses scattered across the state, designed by the likes of Arnold Palmer and Jerry Pate. Each with its own set of challenges, each with its own rewards. Plan an epic road trip to great golf courses across the state of Alabama.
