PROJECT 1 | YANGSHUO YITIAN WEST STREET HIGH PROFILE STORE HEY/ HI/ HELLO
I'm Kim. I let my curiosities take reign as I create interior spaces, resulting in a mix of found knowledge and pure experimentation in my designs. I want to make cool places, unique places, places that make people say 'WOW!', and third place to connect people from work and home. This is a sneak peak of my work as a store designer at Starbucks.

yangshuo YITIAN WEST STREET
An awe-inspiring, three-story new cafe recently opened in the heart of this town’s historic West Street (Xijie) district. The exterior of the building was inspired by local architecture and traditional Chinese opera theaters – in fact, the railing around the second floor can be removed, transforming the space into a stage for the lower plaza. Inside, the building echoes a familiar Starbucks experience like one might see stateside, blended with Yangshuo ‘s rich cultural history. “It’s a marriage of the West and East.”
SITE CONTEXT Yangshuo is estimated to be around 1,400 years old, with some existing brick and tile structures dating as the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Hidden in a valley along the bank of the Li (or Lijiang, locally) River and far enough away to avoid the noise and lights of a major city, the town is surrounded by crystal-clear water dotted with flat-bottom bamboo boats. Backpackers and rock climbers from around the world come to visit this secluded paradise.

To complement the geometric lines at the exterior of the mall, the wood slates at the facade adds depth and contrast from its context which is repeating at the bar front and pourover area. From afar, customers have immediate sightlines to the pourover bar and merch area. Furnished with rich warm tones associated with the beans artwork makes for a grand gesture. The menu is the art of itself. The Mondrian pattern support taken from the exterior add character to the menu system. This experience is further heightened by the world class baristas ready to share their coffee passion, second to none, and provide an individualized hand-crafted coffee beverage from one of many specialized small batch Reserve coffees, found only in very select locations. Minimal yet tonal in nature, this contrast also comes to play at the artwork. Pops of color against textural artworks indicates the story of Starbucks and processes we are immersed in. Artwork, beckons to be engaged as it holds a caricature nature through a mixed medium manner. The furniture also takes it que from the rest of its context, through it’s curves lines and organic forms. Pockets of seating offer respite areas to the mall shoppers and many office goers, wary from the hustle and bustle, who take comfort in the minimalistic atmosphere, warm sights and invigorating smell in the ‘coffee forward’ presentation we have to offer in this store.
SITE CONTEXT Located in the Baiyun District, Wanda Plaza is one of the leading business and shopping centers in Guangzhou. Possessing of a total business area of 392,000 square meters Wanda Plaza is actually a large-scale multifunctional complex, covering leisure, entertainment, dining, retail and service. Including a 5-star Hilton hotel and an IMAX Giant Screen Cinema Hall. This Starbucks is located next to main entrance of the complex

The concept was developed to honor the fishing industry of warehouse district, particularly how neighborhood has been re-inhabited and the streetwise attitude of its new resÂidents. Modernizing the industrial look but still leaning toward exposed ceiling, natural materials, black metal, featured art and unique lighting - it is all about movement, flow and intertwined connections in this store. To capture customers from afar, a soft movement texture panel system was designed to cover electrical rooms while adding depth and character to the store. The floor plan was maximized by placing

the bar at the inner corner while exposing the seating area along corner galzing. The store is taken a standard Starbucks palette but uplift with custom merch system and lighting effect over the bar area for a more dramatic look. Wood and bronze within the space not only adds warmth, but higlights key areas. At night, the entire store takes on a whole new avatar. The geometric lighting fixture is at focal point. The drama level is intensified by a play of shadows and light. Artwork depicting coffee story and whimsycal Starbucks Siren giving a sophisticate feel.
SITE CONTEXT Shanghai evolved from a small fishing village about 1,500 years ago. The short name of Shanghai is “Hu,” which means an ancient fishing tool in Chinese.
a historic fishing area, Shanghai’s version pays tribute to a vanished fishing industry with “new forms and a new spirit”.
As Shanghai embraces deep-rooted fisheries culture, and the east “fisherman’s wharf” was the top fish market in 1930s. The Oriental Fisherman’s Wharf takes its name from the Fisherman’s Wharf of San Francisco. But instead of restoring
The Oriental Fisherman’s Wharf development is aiming to revitalize a disused industrial portion of the HuangPu riverfront, once a heavily industrialized shipping, commercial and warehouse district.

connection
Follow is the idea of intergrating connection between customer and coffee, human and space. Scale and geometric form is at play for this light fixture. With tall ceiling of almost 6m, to bring down the volume while embracing the exposed ceiling, the lighting fixture is a combination of multiple retangular copper tube intertwined with each other. The fixture act as functional task light, artwork and a focal point to the space at night.

Quzhou Wuyue PLAZA
Set within the promenade of the mall, Quzhou Wuyue store sets itself apart from rest of the context through its inviting and warm façade. In contrast to the uniform galzing of the exterior of the mall, each windown frame is lined with copper panel to give definition and add another level of sophiscation to the facade. As customers make their way through the queuing process, floor stand merchandise have been strategically flanked at the sides of the bar, where they can shop from many of our curated items. Texture is further highlighted by the wood slates at bar front in contrasted against the tile texture at back bar. Minimal yet tonal in nature, this dynamic also comes to play at the artwork. Pops of color against textural artworks and the play of negative and positive space indicates the story of Starbucks and Siren. the scale seems less intimidating, creating a more comforting overlapping experience throughout the whole store. Customer is welcome to interact, linger longer, and encouraging to take the coffee and the conversation home. The store is truly a ‘third place’ between work and home.
SITE CONTEXT Quzhou Wuyue is located at the center district of which is planed to be the business center of Zhejiang, with strong commercial environemnt, has many shoping centers and residential buildings around. The whole building is 106,000 sq.m, and the commercial area reaches 60,000sq.m, with 1000 parking lots. The shopping mall is positioning at a intergrative shopping mall that includes entertainment, gathering, shopping and leisure. Our proposal site locates at the ground floor, right next to the main entrance of the supermarket, high accessibility and visibility.
