Throughout the day, groups discussed their stances on different ‘hot-button’ issues and how they individually identify in the world. “We did an exercise called ‘the spectrum,’ where the facilitator would say two words, usually the polar opposites, and you would stand closer to the one you identiďŹ ed most with,â€? explained Jadon Boudreau ’18. He continued, “It was good to see the varying opinions at KUA. It gave me a platform to speak on what I believe in and the conďŹ dence to stand up for those beliefs in a public setting.â€? In addition to Jadi, a panel of Alumni spoke about how their experiences while students at KUA changed their world-view beyond The Hilltop. The panel included Don Lowery ’73, Alda Farlow ’94, Nikki Williams ’02, and current faculty member, Bryant Harris ’04. What ensued was an open conversation about how it felt to attend KUA as a student of color; how the experience prepared each panelist for the future, and a myriad of personal tales about the KUA that each individual experienced as a student.

GLOBAL SCHOLAR While spending a semester at the Island School on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, Maisie MacMillen ’17 developed a passion for combatting ocean pollution. “I participated in beach cleanups and saw ďŹ rst-hand the negative effects that humans have on the environment and all of earth’s inhabitants,â€? she remarks. Maisie’s passion became the launching-pad for her Global Scholar Capstone Project, which resulted in an in-depth analysis of the effects of ocean pollution and a service-oriented plan to help in the cleanup efforts. Maisie became an ambassador for 4Ocean, a non-proďŹ t organization dedicated to removing pollution from the world’s oceans. 4Ocean creates and sells 100% recycled bracelets made entirely from material removed from oceans. Each bracelet sold funds the removal of one pound of trash. To date, Maisie has sold 95 bracelets and has joined a network that has removed over 80,000 pounds of trash since 4Ocean launched earlier this year.

Jon Hastings ’01 Describe your transition from working in the private sector to working in education.
Mathematics Teacher BA, Brown University: Mechanical Engineering MBA, Babson College Jon Hastings graduated from Kimball Union in 2001. He was that year’s valedictorian prior to attending Brown University. He began a career in engineering and earned an MBA from Babson College’s Olin Graduate School of Business before transitioning into teaching at his alma mater. Jon coaches Alpine skiing and serves as the coach/ coordinator for the fall STEM activity. Jon, his wife Sarah, a doctor at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, and daughter, Nora, live nearby Lebanon, NH.

KIMBALL UNION ACADEMY 64 MAIN ST MERIDEN, NH 03770
SOUTH AFRICAN TRIP After the Global Alliance for Innovative Learning (GAIL) conference at Prestige College in Pretoria, South Africa, the KUA delegation explored Kruger National Park, the largest game park in Africa. There, they saw elephants, giraffes, impala, zebras, crocodiles, and even elusive rhinos. Kimball Union hosts the annual conference in 2018, and is looking forward to welcoming schools from India, Scotland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and China to Meriden.
