I have been thinking hard about what it has meant to spend four years at this school, and I often come back to a story by the Argentine writer Jorge Lois Borges. I remember every beautiful afternoon on the ski hill as exactly one, as if I skied for a hundred hours in a row, and the sun was always setting, late in February, and the sky was always getting higher, softer, older. KUA has been a visionary experience, or perhaps, simply, a memory is a visionary experience, and as I graduate, I carry with me that arbitrary, almost inaccessible book. And in gaining it, I feel it is important, also, to gain a sense of individuality. Along the same lines, a STEM exploration allows students a myriad of opportunities to take charge of their own learning. There are steps we can take to help young people build the skills to manage anxiety. Notice I didn’t say “stop anxiety or “cure anxiety. That is simply not possible or even desirable. One way parents can help teens manage anxiety is to put reasonable rules in place that limit social media and screen time. At KUA, kids are exposed to a range of varied experiences that encourages them to use their bodies, go outside, create art, and engage in the exact type of activity that helps their nervous systems reset. When your child contacts you with a long list of reasons why they can’t participate in the extracurricular activities, such as needing to “work on academics or it “being a waste of time, think twice before helping them get excused from this vital kind of physical and mental stimulation. Often, it is anxiety that is driving their desire to quit the activity, and the best

A GLOBAL STUDENT EXPERIENCE 40
KIMBALL UNION MAGAZINE
IN THE FIRST WEEK OF JULY, KIMBALL UNION ACADEMY HOSTED THE 5TH ANNUAL GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR INNOVATIVE LEARNING CONFERENCE. THIS YEAR’S THEME WAS "LEADERSHIP AND ETHICAL DECISION MAKING". HERE ARE SOME VOICES FROM STUDENTS WHO ATTENDED FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE.
LIZ - Kimball Union Describe GAIL in one word: Welcoming I wanted to come to GAIL just for the opportunity to have the discussions with such a great variety of different perspectives. Hearing and learning from a variety of voices is not something we do enough in our American society. GAIL is a group of students who care about the world we live in and understand that the world has problems. We come from different areas and have different beliefs, but at the end of the day, we are all humans and we need to ďŹ nd a way to get along. We want not only to better ourselves, but also want to better the community and we know that cannot be accomplished without respecting other opinions. FALL ĽŅņ

AVELA – Prestige College Describe GAIL in one word: Fun I’ve spent time here with people from Scotland, India, New Zealand, and America and I’ve realized we are quite similar. It shows that we all come from the same place—we may be different colors, come from different parts of the world, have very different weather, but those are really just small differences. We are all human beings and we all live the same.
JESSIE - Robert Gordon’s College Describe GAIL in one word: Phenomenal I wanted to come to the GAIL conference to meet new people and learn about new cultures around the world. Many of us don’t get to experience this at all, so the fact that I can come here and make so many new friends whilst learning so much is just phenomenal. GAIL to me means seven schools, around the world, meeting together and not only learning together but having an incredible time together. Making so many new friendships, having so much fun while doing it, experiencing so many new cultural activities that you cannot experience back in Scotland or New Zealand, for example. It’s just amazing.
JOSHUA – Kristin School Describe GAIL in one word: International I wanted to come to GAIL because it seemed like a far more interactive way of learning. Having people from around the world from diverse cultural backgrounds makes this experience so unique. We’ve seen different takes on the same problems from different cultural perspectives and identities. GAIL means learning in a new way, a way that I believe will become the way of learning in the future. It is far more interactive, which is far more engaging than I am used to.

EMOS – Western International School of Shanghai Describe GAIL in one word: Interesting My favorite part of the GAIL conference has been the school sharing. I got to run an activity on one of my favorite hobbies, which is yo-yoing. It was fun to see people interact with and learn about something we enjoy in our culture. GAIL is about trying to improve my conďŹ dence. I am a relatively shy person when speaking to other people and around here, people are kind and willing to talk to anyone, regardless of where they come from. It is comforting. Â
SAM – Scotch College Describe GAIL in one word: Harmonious GAIL means quite a bit to me. It has been a big part of my life in preparation for the last couple months. I’ve loved the program so far and I see it as an opportunity to expand my horizons and learn about people from all around the world. I’ve met so many people and it has only been a few days.Â
KHUSHI – The Woodstock School Describe GAIL in one word: Colorful My favorite part about GAIL is the people. I know that’s a clichĂŠ thing to say, but the very top reason I signed up for this is to meet new people. There is an energy about this place, a vibe that really energizes you. I wanted to come to this conference mainly to step out of my comfort zone. We’ve been talking a lot this week about the ‘growth zone,’ and how the further you step outside of your comfort zone the more you grow. I’m a pretty introverted person who gets energy from being alone in a quiet place. But I know that meeting new people is where new ideas come from and where innovative ideas start to happen.
