FRACTAL DREAMS MAY BUSINESS OF THE MONTH “Start with your passion. When you figure out what your passion is, follow it with your whole heart.” –Kimmer Sue
How did you choose your career and/or business? I didn’t choose it, my career and business chose me.
Fractal: A rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is a reduced-size copy of the whole.
I came to California to help my mother start and run her quick-print franchise. I learned the business by doing and came to love the design part of printing. Out of that business came a new habit… Computers.
Dream: Something of an unreal beauty, charm, or excellence. I use fractal geometry in some of my art and most of what I create is beautiful!
I started my graphic design side-business to help defray the costs of my habit. About 8 years ago I realized that I was spending all of my free time, as well as all of my work time, playing with computer graphics. So it finally dawned on me… Maybe I AM an artist! (Never mind that my mother has always known I’m an artist. It took that epiphany to figure it out for myself.) My side business became my fulltime business in 2011 and I have never looked back! Tell us about your company. Fractal Dreams, my company, was named after our first domain, www.fractaldreams.com, which was purchased so we would never have to change our email address again (20 years ago). Here are the definitions of Fractal Dreams as they’re printed on the back of my business card:
Truly small businesses have been orphaned by the print industry, the people with the knowledge to create the marketing that makes a difference, because they are not perceived to have money. I’m here to fill that gap and help small businesses with their marketing. I start with their design and guide them through their printing, signage, promotional items and websites. The goal being to get the biggest bang for their marketing buck! What has contributed most to your success as a woman owned business? My success in business is my understanding of relationships and willingness to go the extra mile for them. I used to think it was simply because I’m a woman, but have come to see that it’s because I actually put my relationships first, before the money. The people that have come into my 4
life because of my business (I call them friends, some would call them clients) have real lives and real struggles. I am here to help them and to let them help me. You see, it’s that wonderful give and take of friendship that makes me successful. If you could share one piece of advice to another woman starting a business, what would it be? Start with your passion. When you figure out what your passion is, follow it with your whole heart. When should someone give up their dream of being a business owner? You should never give up your dream of being a business owner. You should, however, get help. The amount of help available is downright staggering. From my specialty of marketing and design, to accounting, legal help, business coaching, and even personal growth help, there are specialists that can help you with every aspect of your business and your life. Dreams are powerful things that can carry you far. Don’t let them die. What do you do for fun/relaxation? Fun and relaxation for me is really all about people and art and play. When

I’m alone, I’m playing with art in one form or another (I do all of my own nail art). When I’m with people it’s all about play - getting together for good food and games, or painting pottery at Pottery Magic Modesto. Any parting advice for someone who would like to follow in graphic design? Anyone choosing the graphic design path today should take the time to learn printing and all that it entails. The world of printing is a complicated place with many different process-
es that all require very different specifications. Not understanding printing is causing designers to make poor decisions when creating art for websites that can’t then be repurposed for printing. And making sure that a company’s imagery matches from one medium

A R E Y O U WA I T I N G O N H A P P I N E S S ? Submitted by: Julie Foucht, Successful Women of Central Valley Affiliate Member
I had a great conversation with a new friend yesterday about the times when I’ve been unhappy in my business. I told her about the years when I first started coaching. I was so anxious to leave my job and coach full time that I almost couldn’t stand it. I didn’t see how I could financially make it work and yet I resented each day that I ‘wasted’ not doing the thing I loved. The more I gave in to the energy of anxiety and stress, the harder it became to find clients. Which just pushed the dream further away. I kept thinking: when I HAVE enough clients, I will get to DO coaching fulltime, then I will BE happy. Until the day I decided to turn that statement around and just be happy. I stopped worrying about making a ton of money with coaching. I stopped stressing about the time I spent at the job. I focused on just enjoying the work I did with clients. And a funny thing happened. My coaching income went up and within 6 months I was coaching full time! I’ll bet there are times when you’ve fallen into the ‘when I have ____, then I’ll be able to do ________, then I will be _______’ trap. This kind of thinking stops the flow of energy. It actually shuts down the parts of your brain that create results. It sends you into survival mode. Fight or flight kicks in. Decisions are made from fear. I didn’t choose happiness because I brilliantly remembered to shift my flow of energy into a creative, love based space. I was just tired of feeling anxious. But you don’t have to wait until you are so utterly exhausted by your own striving to make this decision. Use the be -> do -> have formula outlined below and save yourself the years of agony. 1.
Notice what you are longing for. What is it you really want to have? Imagine what it would be like to have that. What will you do when you have it? How will you feel?
2.
Once you’ve identified the feeling you want, name it.
3.
Create a list of all the things that give you that feeling now.
by JULIE FOUCHT, Kickass Biz Coaching]
4.
Let go of striving for what you want. Focus on the things on your list, concentrating your attention on filling your body with that feeling.
5.
Start with 1 minute of just being in the feeling, then extend it as you get better at holding onto the emotion.
6.
Choose to focus on the Be part of the equation. Be-ing in the emotion will fuel your actions, what you have to Do, in order to achieve your goal, the Have.
Please share what emotion you are choosing to BE, and how that affects your Have in the group forum (sharing turns the dial up on your commitment to BE). Have a Kickass Day! To connect with Julie Foucht: 831.772.0156 www.kickassbizcoaching.com

CONGRATULATIONS TO CENTRAL VALLEY GRADUATES! My Name is Brooke Nelson. I am 17 years old and have been attending the Successful Young Ladies Group for the past three months. I have really enjoyed each moment, learning from the Success for Teens, as well as techniques we need as women to grow and to become independent with our future lives. We, as young women, deserve to learn how to love ourselves in spite of any flaws we may have. We have so much that we are capable of, so much to look forward to, and so many decisions to make for our futures. It’s quite amazing knowing that we are capable of more than we can even imagine. I am looking forward to being involved in this group and interviewing the other members of our Successful Young Ladies for a submission each month in the WeWzine. I look forward to the friendships we will form, the bonds we will create, and the memories we will have. To our futures! Our next meeting is July 2nd. Visit our website www.SYLCentralValley.org to get details. Interested in having your story shared in the WeWzine? Email me at editor@SYLCentralValley.org. 11
June Woman of the Month Donna Stephens Title(s): American Cancer Society Volunteer Event Lead, Relay for Life Organization(s): Modesto Relay for Life www.Cancer.org
Donna Stephens is a Central Valley Broker and a passionate volunteer with the American Cancer Society’s Modesto Relay For Life. Stephens is also an Event Committee member for The Soiree of Central Valley (the American Cancer Society's Gala held on September 26). In addition to her community service and career, Stephens is a wife and a mother to two sons (23 and 26 years old). Her family and friends are very precious to her. Q. What do you enjoy most about your profession and why did you choose it in the first place? What was the inspiration for your company/organization/project?
“The thing that I enjoy most about my profession and volunteering with the American Cancer Society is meeting new people and getting to know the community and surrounding areas.”
My career is in Real Estate. I started selling new homes in the Central Valley in 2002, and have since earned my Broker's license. Currently, I am a Broker-Associate with Century 21 M&M and Associates in Modesto. The thing that I enjoy most about my profession and volunteering with the American Cancer Society is meeting new people and getting to know the community and surrounding areas. We started my Relay Team (“Meet the Flockers”) in Modesto six years ago. My team was established in remembrance of my Dad, Don Moody, who lost his battle in 2009 to Kidney Cancer. We started with about 15 of us and we have since grown to 34 family and friends this year. We now walk to also celebrate our nine survivors.
12
Q. Tell us about any new projects you have coming up (or recently completed). The Modesto Relay For Life is coming up May 16th & 17th at Johansen High School Football stadium. We also have our Relay Preevent Survivor luncheon coming up on Sunday, May 3rd at the Commemorative Air Force Hanger, Modesto Airport at 1:00pm. Q. What is a typical day like for you? My day begins around 5:30am and ends about 8:00pm, and I juggle real estate with Relay for Life business. I attend community events (Chamber Business Before Hours, Relay Leadership meetings, I present at local companies that request it with our Staff Partner, Kelly Kelly, Hospital Relay kickoffs, etc.). Then early evening I join a Flocking crew and we flock homes that have been ordered by residents to fundraise for our team (our Relay team goal is $15,000 this year).
Q. Tell us about your community involvement – what you are passionate about outside of work and home and why/how do you participate? I started as a Modesto Relay Team Captain in 2010. I jumped in and added Team Development Chair on the event committee where I sat for three years before accepting the Event Lead for the 2015 Modesto Relay For Life event.
I also accepted a regional committee position this year with a new foundation, M&M Cares (scholarship opportunities beginning in 2016 for seven California regions). Q. What is the biggest risk you ever took professionally and/or the biggest obstacle you have overcome? The biggest risk would be starting my own Real Estate company in 2005, when the new home sales builder I worked with retired and left the area. I was successful for eight years and then in 2014 I joined Century 21 M&M and Associates. The biggest obstacle I have overcome would be public speaking. Q. From where do you draw inspiration? Who have been your role models, mentors, etc? My Mother, Shirley Moody, is the person I draw inspiration from. I
also have a couple of ladies who have been mentors over the years.
Q. What do you do for fun, relaxation, or entertainment?
Q. What do you do to keep yourself sharp? What one thing have you done in the past year that has made a significant difference in your life/your mission?
I love to craft. I attend local craft fairs with my mother and sister in the fall/winter where we sell our handmade items. I love family time, hanging out, planning murder mystery parties, etc.
I am constantly learning and meeting new people. One thing I have done that has made a difference in my life is stepping out of my shell and removing the self-limiting beliefs I held over myself. Q. What one thing would you like to learn this year and where do you see yourself in 5 years? I would love to learn how to knit. Five years from now seems so far away‌ I am sure I will be Relaying and volunteering and having fun enjoying life.

May Woman of the Month Shelley Schmidig Title(s): Mom, Student, Tax Professional, Accounting Clerk, & Entrepreneur
Q. What five tips would you share with the group? One: Never give up! Even when you feel that things are never going to get better just keep thinking positive thoughts and keep on working towards your goal. Once your goal is accomplished NO ONE can take that away from you. Two: Surround yourself with positive people! You don’t need negative people in you life to bring you down.
Schmidig earned her B.S. in accounting in 2013 and is now working on her Masters Degree.
“What the ‘whole woman’ means to me is a woman who is uplifting, encouraging, loving, caring, motivational, inspirational, and someone who dreams… if we don’t dream, we have nothing to live for and life would be a routine that is played out day in and day out.”
Three: Love yourself! Love yourself because even in the darkest of days you can bring a smile to yourself and it can turn your day around. Love yourself and be happy with who you are and what you have accomplished in your life.
Shelley Schmidig’s day starts at 4:30am and doesn’t end until 10pm or later. But what do you expect from a single Mom who is raising her two young boys, working on her Master’s degree, leading Cub Scout activities and playing on a softball team? Schmidig is the epitome of a hard-working, successful woman who is determined to achieve her goals. And she is inspiring her fellow Successful Women of the Central Valley along the way. Currently, Shelley’s “day job” is working as an accounting clerk and tax professional, and she enjoys the challenges the work brings on a daily basis. Shelley loves numbers, which is what lead her to pursue her Bachelor’s in Accounting at Modesto Junior College. When she started the journey to her degree in 2004, she was majoring in Ornamental Horticulture. But, as she explains, once she took the bookkeeping class at MJC in the Spring of 2008, she fell in love and from then on, she was hooked.
Four: Take care of yourself first! I know that is a hard concept to think of when raising a family, but take care of yourself first because if you don’t who is going to take care of your family? You cant take care of Shelley Schmidig Recipient of Successful Women of your family with Central Valley Woman of the Month with her mother. 100% of your ability When Shelley isn’t doing homeif you are not 100% yourself. me and get me going and refocusing on my goals and dreams and that anything can be accomplished” Schmidig said. “Since I have become a member of the Successful Women of Modesto, I have been able to find myself and who I am.”
Schmidig credits much of her success to her supportive friends and family, who also serve as her mentors. “I draw my inspiration from my family and friends, What the “whole woman” means to me is a because without them I wouldn’t be where I woman who is uplifting, encouraging, loving, am today,” she excaring, motivational, inspirational, and someplained. “My role one who dreams. models and mentors are my parents, Hans A woman needs to be uplifting because we are and Roxann Schmihere for one another. The whole woman should be motivational and inspirational because we as a woman can encourage someone to do the same thing that we accomplished; we need to build each one up, not tear one another apart. Today and your Health By: Lupe Hodges, founder Iron Godess ~ A fitness blog
How is it possible that in today’s world we are so obsessed with fitness, health and looking good that we still manage to be the most obese, and unhealthy we have ever been? Could it be we are not using our resources, or is it just because we simply keep putting it off? The chances are you answered, “I don’t put it off. I simply know that I can start next Monday.” Chances are, well you guessed it… that you didn't begin.
I live to motivate women, and if there is something that bothers me it is women refer to ourselves as anything negative. How many of you have joked about being “the fat friend” or saying, “Oh I'm not skinny enough” in your day to day discussions? I really want to change the outlook you have of yourself. You are a strong, beautiful woman full of potential! Give yourself that much credit! You deserve it! We are on this journey together to become the best we can be, and together we will explore different programs, options, and resources with your HEALTH. Today is a gift and tomorrow is not promised. Let’s live a HAPPY, HEALTHY life!
Research suggests that women make up the larger percentage in of people living an unhealthy life, and that we are more unhappy than men. Did you know that we tend to eat more unhealthy foods than men? More than fifty percent of married couples have been interviewed about this issue, and the findings shared that married women were more obese than unmarried women.

April 20 - May 20
May 21 - June 20
June 21 - July 22
Aries: June is action month for the Rams, as Uranus is in Grand Sextile position with Jupiter and Mars, the Sun, and Mercury on and off throughout the month. Holding firmly on to your own unique way of doing things pays off in spades, as this energy brings together the relationships you need in order to achieve your dreams. This energy expands your reach of clients as well as those to praise your good deeds, leaving you feeling as if you’re basking in the limelight most of the time! Beware of Uranus’ Squared position with Pluto, as it threatens to make you feel as if you’re ignoring other responsibilities while you take the time to shine. The best part about being a Ram is the ability to handle many things at once, leading you to being awesome in all aspects of your life. The Moon in your sign on the 10th through the 12th may intensify this feeling, but she also intensifies your shine at the same time. The only time you’ll stop shining is if you beat yourself up over things you can’t control, so keep shining! Lucky Days: 4th – 6th
Taurus: This month it’s time to put your goals in order. Having a dream is but the first step to living that dream. Once you have visualized what you want, it’s time to do what the Earth Signs do best and get a plan of action together!!!! But remember, too much organization will get in the way of your success too! Spending too much time on small details takes away from the natural flow of energy, halting your progress rather than allowing you to see results. The Moon comes into your sign the 12th through the 14th showing you exactly the sort of balance you need between action and acceptance. Though she provides a good, stable foundation to get started, her aspects with Jupiter bring back old fears when it comes to the inability to expand in the ways that you would like to. These fears teach us a lesson; what not to do now, and that is all. They’re not meant to hold you back from all of the awesome possibilities that are out there for you, only you have the power to do that. Lucky Days: 6th – 8th
Gemini: Happy Birthday to all the Gemini’s born this month! Mercury goes Direct on the 11th this month while in full Opposition with Saturn for most of the first half of the month. Even after the Sun and Mars have left this aspect, it hangs on through Mercury, making you feel as if no matter what you do, you just can’t seem to move past a certain point when it comes to your goals and dreams. This intensifies with the Moon moving into your sign on the 14th through the 16th, as the emotional frustration seems to be at its peak. This aspect is really showing you how much energy you put into how you think about the situation, for any kind of negative thought process will do huge amounts of damage to your own success. The Sun, Mars, and finally later in the month Mercury form a Grand Sextile with Jupiter and Uranus, giving you the type of awesome energy and influence to see your goals set into action, providing the money and support you need to create the infinite possibilities you need. Stop worrying about how it’s going to happen and be open to whatever comes your way! Lucky Days: 8th – 10th
Cancer: Happy Birthday Cancer!!!! And Happy Birthday to all the Cancers born in June!!! Venus leaves your sign early in the month, showing you how powerful your thoughts influence the love and support that you see around you. The Moon comes into your sign on the 16th through the 18th, and her opposition with Pluto may make you feel as if what you want to do and what you need to do are two completely separate things, that don’t seem to mesh well together. But at the same time, her Trine with Neptune allows you to see how much time you do have for both, if you’re willing to get out of your head and put the time into getting it done! The Sun comes into your sign as we celebrate the first day of summer, followed by Mars who brings you an element of energy and ambition to your career plans, with the time and ability to get things done. This is not about being a super human person, this is about understanding how much time you really do have to get the awesome things in order in your life that you want, when you take the time to stop focusing on the negative. Actions do speak louder than thoughts in this case. Lucky Days: 10th – 12th

Leo: The time really has come for you Leos!!!!!! And soooo not in a bad way at all! Venus comes into your sign early this month, spending the majority of the month in your sign, while bringing you the positive influence of love. This month is all about feeling the love and support that you do have around you, and Jupiter’s influence is all about expanding the type of love you require. No longer focusing on the internal you, it’s time to see how your perception and love for yourself magnifies throughout difference aspects of your life, and while both of these planets form a Grand Sextile with Uranus, the Sun, Mars, and Mercury off and on throughout the month, you’ll see the results in your goals, career, and bank account as well. The Moon coming into your sign the 18th through the 20th intensifies these positive aspects, helping you to see your own awesomeness shining through into your external life. You may even feel like you’re on a cloud, and the truth is, you should be feeling that way! It’s time! Lucky Days: 12th – 14th
Virgo: This month you may find yourself dealing with old stuff, things you may have thought you’d dealt with already, but as the situation and the feelings behind it prove there is still more work to be done. The Moon coming into your sign the 21st through the 23rd forms a T Square between Uranus and Mercury, bringing back old feelings of never having enough time to be able to focus on your own goals. With Neptune’s Retrograde influence, you could be feeling as if no matter what happens, you’re never going to get anywhere. It’s time to turn that feeling around, by letting go of the worry and negative thought process in order to chance your energy to flow in a more positive direction. You deserve to accomplish every awesome thing you put your mind to, and there really is no reason for you to be standing in your own way. Think about it! Lucky Days: 15th – 17th
Libra: Mulling over the past is necessary at times to make sure you’ve learned from the past’s mistakes, but living there is the key to ending your own success this month. By taking a step back to see how far you’ve progressed, you give yourself the opportunity to see how far you’ve come as well as a good idea of where you want to go next. Too much time is often spent stuck in the could’ve/should’ve way of thinking, when those past experiences are ripe for new ways of doing things in the future. The Moon comes into your sign the 23rd through the 25th, and as she moves into T Squared position with Uranus and Pluto, you may feel as if being yourself isn’t good enough for those closest to you. But at the same time, her Grand Sextile with Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury have a different story to tell, providing you with the support you need in order to make awesome steps towards your goals. Sometimes you have to do what you need to do for you, and those that truly love you will understand. Lucky Days: 17th – 19th
Scorpio: Saturn officially makes his way into your sign this month, and although his Oppositions with the Sun, Mars, and Mercury, the first couple of weeks of the month make things tense when it comes to your goals and dreams, he brings a very hard lesson in showing you the responsibilities your own thoughts have to a situation. Automatically assuming things aren’t going to work out for you is the key element in things not working out. It sends a very clear message to the Universe that you are not ready for the abundance that is yours by right. Changing how you think about things increases your ability to be successful, and this is proven as the Moon makes her way into your sign the 26th through the 28th. Forming a Grand Water Trine with Neptune, the Sun, and Mars, she shows you clearly how much time worrying takes up, when there are so many other awesome things to be done that would be more productive and less damaging to your cause. Knowing what you deserve allows you to open up those doors so the abundance flows freely. Lucky Days: 19th – 21st

Sagittarius: As Saturn leaves your sign this month, his Oppositions with the Sun, Mars, and Mercury throughout the first half of the month, weigh on you like a thousand pound weight. You’ll definitely feel as if you’re done with him well before his influence is not felt anymore. Unfortunately, he’s not done with you yet! Understanding your true responsibilities to yourself is important, and this is the lesson that Saturn is ready to provide you with. Putting your responsibility on everyone else around you is important, but not if you’re willing to put yourself on the back burner. Dare to put yourself first this month! It doesn’t mean you love everyone else less, it just means you love them enough to show them how important grabbing your own awesome dreams really is for everyone! The Moon wraps up the month in your sign the 28th through the 30th, forming a Grand Fire Trine of infinite possibilities when you can truly manifest, in a positive way, your thoughts on those that are there to support you. Seeing the beauty in them is key, when at times you can only see how they irritate you. Lucky Days: 21st – 23rd
Capricorn: Pluto’s Square with Uranus this month may have you feeling the need to pinch the pennies, when it seems like those you love seem to be in need of everything all at once. At the same time, her Sextile with Neptune this month provides the time you’ve been needing to spend some time with some of those important people in your life, and the best part is you get to make the choice of who, when, and how this happens! The Moon coming into your sign the 3rd through the 5th joins both aspects, giving you a much deeper reason to make these things happen, and understanding that the loss of some money to spend time with someone special was well worth it in the end. Money can always be replaced, but the awesome relationships you’re blessed to have and the memories you create cannot. After all, whatever are you working so hard for if not for this? Lucky Days: 23rd – 25th
Aquarius: This month those you love and your daily schedule seem to take turns working smoothly together, while getting in each other’s way at the same time. The Moon coming into your sign the 5th through the 7th brings one of those tough yet satisfying moments into your life, as she Trines with the Sun and Mars to help your inner flame shine through when it comes to your career. You’ll want to shout to the rooftops, but her Opposition with Venus and Jupiter makes it appear as if there isn’t anyone to shout to, as you find yourself in the uncomfortable place of feeling like no one really cares. The truth is, they do care, even if they’ve got more pressing things on their mind at the moment. But this sort of aspect happens in order for you to see how much more important it is to be proud of yourself rather than expecting others to make you feel awesome. You can truly do that better than anyone else can, and you shouldn’t be afraid to show that part of yourself too! Lucky Days: 1st, 25th – 27th
Pisces: Neptune continues to be in Squared position with the Sun, Mars, and Mercury through the middle of the month, not long after she goes Retrograde on the 11th until November. Neptune Retrogrades are very different from all other Retrogrades, almost clearing your vision rather that making things more out of focus than they were before. Her Sextile with Pluto this month, brings you closer to those you love, providing the kind of time, you’ve been needing from some of those that are most important to you. The Moon coming into your sign on the 7th through the 9th hits hard when she forms a T Square with Saturn and Mercury as she joins Neptune, making it seem very much as if no one is really there to support you. This aspect reminds you how much responsibility your thoughts have in every situation, and any negative thought processes tend to blur the awesome support system you do have, especially during very stressful times. Sometimes in order to really see the support, you need to take a step back and really enjoy the moment for a while. These types of breaks are needed when it seems as if you’re constantly moving all of the time. Lucky Days: 2nd – 4th, 28th – 30th 21
FRINGE PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO JUNE BUSINESS OF THE MONTH
“I'm so thankful that I get to pursue my passion for all types of photography, and that there is never a dull moment in this line of work. One day I might photograph products for a business who needs marketing materials, the next I might have to get a smile out of an angry hubby who doesn't want family photos made! From squirming kiddos and hyper dogs who won't sit still, to breathtaking weddings, it's all fun and I love the challenge”
Tell us about how you chose your career/business and the company that you work for or own. My B.A. and M.A. degrees are in Communications and over the years the work I’ve done has included writing, marketing, public relations and fundraising tasks along with lots of photography. As an Army wife who moves constantly, it only made sense that I would eventually start my own business so that I could pick up and move a little easier each time. I established Fringe Photography Studio & Creative Services officially in 2009. While I still offer writing and creative services on a contract basis, my business is now primarily focused on various types of photography for people, pets, businesses and more.
What has been the biggest challenge or struggle in owning your own business? For me, the biggest challenge is moving every couple of years to a brand new state and getting myself established in a new area I know very little about. I have to prove myself to the new community and earn their trust in a very short period of time- it definitely keeps me on my toes! What has contributed to your success as a woman-owned business? Not giving up. I’ve faced lots of challenges, and I make plenty of mistakes, but I try to stay positive and learn from those as I push forward. Are there any people in your field you would like to meet and/or work with and have not yet had the opportunity? There are so many talented photographers that inspire me!! One of my favorites of all time is the amazing Joe McNally. I met him once and got his autograph after he did a presentation, but I would absolutely love to take a handson workshop with him. 22
How has the community supported your business? I have been so fortunate to have connected with wonderful people in this community in the short time I’ve lived here- from the ladies of the Successful Women of the Central Valley to my fellow animal rescuers, they have all encouraged me and supported me by welcoming me to Modesto with open arms and helping me learn more about this area. What are some of your favorite ways to network? I absolutely love social media, but there is nothing like hanging out with folks in person! I really enjoy connecting with people on LinkedIn and FaceBook, and then having a chance to meet them in “real life.” If you could share one piece of advice to another woman starting a business, what would it be? It’s all about education. Take time to educate yourself- sometimes passion isn’t enough and you need to have a solid foundation to ensure success. Learn how to run a business properly before you jump in. Once you do kick things off, never stop learn-
S U C C E S S F U L W O M E N O F C E N T R A L VA L L E Y A F F I L I AT E M E M B E R
Any parting advice for someone who would like to follow in your field? For photography specifically- be ready to pay your dues. Lots of new photographers end up doing free work in order to build their portfolios. Everyone starts somewhere and you have to be willing to work hard to learn and grow. If you don’t want to put in the hard word, you won’t succeed.
ing and seizing opportunities to further your professional development. When should someone give up their dream of being a business owner? I am not one to ever encourage giving up on a dream, but I think when something stops making you happy it’s time to reevaluate it. Take a step back and ask yourself “does this still serve a purpose in my life?” If the answer is “no,” then it’s time to let it go so that you have more room for things that bring you happiness. What do you do for fun and relaxation? I spend time with my pack of furbabies and my wonderful hubby. We love to travel and go to the movies as often as we can. I also volunteer with local animal rescues and nonprofits.

Fashion Rules! by: Melissa Nethercott
With that title, what you’re probably expecting to hear are a list of dos and don’ts related to fashion! I’m actually going to debunk those rules... so let’s get started. Things are just not what they used to be, matching your handbag, belt and shoes are things of the past. Wearing all one metal, goodbye! No white after Labor Day… so long! The only fashion rule you should follow is wear what you love. When I shop, I try to find what speaks to me… or to my style, which actually ends up mostly black, white and grey- but I’m a jewelry girl, so this works perfectly for me. Do patterns speak to you? What about color? Then go for that, all it should do is make you feel great… if you don’t feel great wearing it, put it back on the rack… if it’s in your closet already, donate it! You probably already have a good idea of what shapes flatter your figure. I am technically a ‘pear’ shape. Once you come to terms with your shape, it’s a lot easier to work with it and not against it! I can’t wear skirts that cling, or straight dresses… they’ll fit up top and not the bottom! I have to wear structured bottoms and a fitted waist to balance my body type. There are four basic body types, and here are some simple tips to flatter your perfect figures. Apple: Generally larger upper torso, or chest area. Slender on the bottom. Keep your tops fitted and structured, avoid ruffles and things that add bulk. Balance the top with a wide-legged jean, or full skirt to the knee, show off those gorgeous gams.
Pear: Generally larger on the bottom with a petite upper torso and waist. Choose A-line skirts to the knee or just below, boot cut jeans or straight trouser style. Tops can have embellishments to balance things out. Try a ruffled blouse or a textured tunic. Hourglass: Boy are you lucky! Show off that waist… dresses that tie, belt or cinch are perfect for you. Just about any cut of jean will work, add a pattered tunic and a fun belt to show off your curves. Belts are your fashion BFF, so stock up!
Once you define your body type, it’s a lot easier to choose your clothing that will flatter your figure and feel great on! The thing I love about fashion is the freedom to express who you are within it, if you so choose. Experiment! Mix patterns, mix your metals, and play with color! We’ll go into more detail on how to do these things in future articles, but for now just know this: good fashion should make you feel beautiful, the end. Now, there are in fact some ‘suggestions’ with regard to trends and hem lengths… only suggestions, no judging here. -Miniskirts are probably best left to the teens and toddlers, unless worn with tights or leggings. -Choose one area to show some skin… showing your shoulders? Keep your legs covered, and vice versa. -Wearing tights or pantyhose? Keep the shoe closed-toed. - Leggings are not pants, wear only with a tunic or long blouse that covers the rear… trust me.
Rectangle: This shape can be tricky, you’ve got to define a waist with clothing… but it’s easier than you think! Color blocking can be super flattering. Choose a top with an ombre effect, lighter at the top and darker near the waist, or create the effect with a neutral top and a much darker belt. Dark pants and jeans will keep the focus up top and help you achieve the hourglass look. A-line dresses with a bit higher cinched waist will also do the trick and are fabulous for everyday effortless style.
Fashion can be a beautiful reflection of the woman you are, so go shopping and have FUN, find YOUR personal style, try new things! Trust your gut…if you don’t trust it yet, you can always ask me, I’d love to help you discover your style. To contact Melissa:

Today's Risk is Tomorrow's Cakewalk By Caterina Rando Today's risk is tomorrow's cakewalk. A risk is something you would do in an instant if you knew it was the right thing to do and you knew it would work the way you wanted. It is not knowing the outcome that makes it a risk. Here is an important secret. Risktaking increases your self-trust. Self-trust is what personal power is all about. Seven Secrets for accelerating your risktaking 1. Know you have the power. "We are capable of far more than we give ourselves credit for," says Susan Jeffers in her book “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway.” The more you risk the more you see yourself capable of. 2. Build on past successes. There have been times in the past when risks you took worked well for you. Think about those times to give you confidence for your present situation. 3. Project positive outcomes. It is human nature to worry and wonder about what could go wrong. By becoming more conscious of when you are projecting negative outcomes, you can stop this natural mental tendency and start to turn your thoughts around. 4. Create support in your life. Get a friend who also wants to expand her comfort zone to partner with you. You can coach and cheer each other on as you both become better risk-takers. 5. Ask for what you want every time. Commit yourself everyday to asking for what you want. With whatever it is you want, an appointment, a contract or simply a cup of coffee, if you do not ask the question, the answer is already, “no”. 6. Make a risk list. Write down all of the clients, past clients or potential clients you are apprehensive about talking to. Then start to contact one or more a day and ask for what you want, more business, some referrals or perhaps some honest feedback.
7. Keep track of your risks. Write them down for two important reasons. You will begin to realize that the more risks you take the more success you are having and pretty soon your earlier risks will seem silly because now you do those things with ease. 28
When you take a risk and go for what you want sometimes you do not get what you want, sometimes you get something even better. TAKE A RISK A DAY CHALLENGE Risktaking: there is no better way to accelerate your direct selling business. Join us here at the success center by taking the TAKE A RISK A DAY Challenge. • Everyday do one thing that makes you uncomfortable. Everyday find one risk to take. You have to take risks for at least 21 days. If you skip a day start again the next day. • Start a risk list of ideas for risks you could take during the month. Put on there things you have been putting off like taking a class or doing a presentation in your home or approaching people you do not know and initiating a conversation. • Keep track of your risks, every day write down the risk you took. • Keep track of the new, wonderful, inspiring and absolutely amazing results you will create because you have put yourself through the 21 day TAKE A RISK A DAY CHALLENGE. You will be convinced to keep up this daily success practice going day after day. The Whole Woman Concept WHAT IS IT? The Whole Woman Concept means every aspect of our lives are important and are inherently a part of who we are; in essence they are a part of our core self. While we prioritize our efforts, all areas that we invest ourselves in are clearly areas of importance and no one area can define our success as a whole person. If you are not in business does that mean you are not a successful person? If you are not a mom does that make you a failure in family? No! That is just crazy talk! We are not one-dimensional people. Success is not one-dimensional! We need to celebrate our successes, applaud our efforts, empower one another to achieve our goals… all goals. We also need to support each other when we are faced with challenges and coach each other with advice and care in every aspect of our lives. We are all in this together! The Whole Woman concept is more about us as multi-dimensional people intrinsically and has less to do with us externally; the concept is about making us who we are, not what we do. Nurture and encompass the whole woman you are! You are so much more than just your life status, your bank account balance, your family, your past, your future, your level of education, the last book you read, etc. We are not measured solely by any one area of our lives. Let’s embrace ourselves as whole women! Let’s refuse to make connections based on external offerings, but instead really look at the whole woman when getting to know your sisters! By learning more about each other and building core connections we embrace ourselves and shine. Every aspect of our multi-dimensional lives will improve ten-fold with the support and empowerment of each other. Don’t you believe that to be true? Do you believe in every man (or woman) for themselves, or do you believe in the betterment of women as a whole? The Whole Woman Concept takes that thinking to the next level of a life journey. Together. 31
