A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Like the rest of the country, Kettering University has faced many challenges during its 2008-2009 fiscal year. While the country’s economic crisis created hurdles, it also created opportunities for growth – and the University grew.
Dr. Liberty with Govenor Granholm
Kettering helped celebrate General Motors 100th birthday in July by participating in open house festivities throughout Flint. Individuals toured campus, the archives and even our home. A few months after this historic event, the campus welcomed the class of 2013 A-section students. The total incoming class size increased by approximately two percent over last year, but what was most interesting was the number of incoming female students. This population increased from 13 to 19 percent, a level we have not experienced in years. This is a trend the University hopes to maintain and we will continue dedicating resources to academic and career fields to which women are drawn. From welcoming new students to campus, the University switched gears to host Alumni Reunion Weekend, otherwise known as “Bulldog Days.” Alumni who hadn’t been back to campus in a while were amazed by the changes they found. Some of those changes include the new Entrepreneurship minor, the Computer Science accreditation and one of the more exciting things that has happened in Flint in a while – the pending addition of Kettering’s new Science and Technology Incubator. In August 2008, Kettering welcomed one of its soon-to-be Incubator tenants to campus with a great deal of pomp and circumstance – Swedish Biogas. His Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, and many Michigan and U.S. officials attended this celebration. The new year continued to progress in this same incredible fashion. Kettering introduced two new areas of study, Aerospace Engineering and Chemical Engineering, and received a $225,000 grant from the Kern Family Foundation to promote entrepreneurship across the curriculum. Kettering hosted the FIRST Robotics district competition in the recreation center, and Agent Fate, an ongoing Defense Department research project at Kettering exceeded expectations. In March Kettering signed an articulation agreement with San Antonio College and April brought the University notification of a $250,000 gift from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) in its efforts to support new and emerging businesses with the potential of developing into high-growth employers for the region. This grant was one of only five awarded by the MEDC. While the country’s economic crisis created hurdles, there have also been opportunities for both qualitative and modest quantitative growth. As previously stated, the University has not escaped the harsh reality of the economic downturn. Cost reductions have been necessary, but with the assistance of faculty, staff, students and alumni, the University will continue to focus on the future. On behalf of the Kettering community, I wish you well. Sincerely, y,
S.R. Liberty 3

UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT A RECAP FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT, DENNIS WASHINGTON Kettering’s friends provide many kinds of assistance, their time, advice, talents, treasures and feedback. The University requires these things to grow and the University thanks all of you for your gifts. During the 2008-2009 fiscal year, the University Advancement team enjoyed small gatherings and larger celebrations that brought alumni and friends together to share in the University’s successes and to hear where Kettering is headed. The Development and Alumni staff hosted groups all over the country from Florida to Indiana, West Michigan to New York and North Carolina to Arizona just to name a few. For those of you who were unable to attend, I offer you an open invitation to stop by and visit the University’s website and find out when we will be in your neighborhood – we would love to meet you. Also, if you’re in the Flint area, give us a call. I or one of my team members would be more than happy to give you a tour of campus. Kettering University faced many challenges during its 2008-2009 fiscal year. The restructuring of General Motors left many students without co-op positions and the economic climate meant many individuals, corporations and foundations were unable to continue their financial support. With all of these challenges, Kettering/GMI alumni have pulled together to “Mobilize the Troops.” Some have become ambassadors at their place of employment to find positions for students; others have worked as mentors to students to help them develop the resumes and skills companies are looking for today. Others have continued to donate and have asked their fellow classmates to support their alma mater, while a greater number of alumni and friends have participated in alumni events to find out how they can help the University grow. This assistance has been priceless and the University continues to need this type of involvement to be successful. I extend a big “Thank You” to all of you who continue supporting the university. It is because of faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends that Kettering continues to receive national recognition and exposure. I wish you all the best. Sincerely,
Dennis Washington Dennis Washington

GIVING HOPE “The day before I received your scholarship, I had given up hope regarding my education at Kettering University. . . When I opened my letter from you, my face lit up with joy and I started crying. My mother and I both cried because we had been praying for more financieal help and then we received your blessing. I can once again feel that I will be prosperous in the future.” India R. Smith Neithercut Scholarship Recipient
