The Wichita Art Museum celebrates 80 years serving Wichita audiences with
80 days of
celebration Around the WAM in 80 Days celebrates the museum’s 80th anniversary with nonstop activities and events for 80 days. Oh my! Taking our cue from the Jules Verne 1873 classic adventure book Around the World in 80 Days, the Wichita Art Museum will offer something each day from September 22 through December 12, 2015. The museum first opened to the public on September 22, 1935—so we launch our string of events on that date 80 years later. What better way to conclude the 80-day marathon than with the glittery holiday party, Around the Wam in
80 Days?

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 21 Kick-Off Celebration: Around the WAM in 80 Days Tuesday, September 22 | 3 pm The Wichita Art Museum opened its doors at 3 pm on September 22, 1935. In keeping with this historic event—exactly 80 years ago on this day—enjoy free admission all day plus a special musical performance, lemonade, and fortune cookies. (The cookies are connected to a special story—join us to find out what it is!) Art Garden in Time Wednesday, September 23 | Starting at 10 am Documenting the museum’s Art Garden, photographs of the construction during the nine-month process have been stitched together creating a cool timelapse video. Senior Expo Thursday, September 24 | 9 am–3 pm The Central Plains Area Agency on Aging and the Wichita Art Museum partner for this annual event to provide Wichita seniors and their caregivers valuable information, health screenings, and activities for adults 55+. A box lunch from the Muse Cafe will be available for $6. Art Garden Premiere Party Friday, September 25 | 5:30 pm Museum board members and patrons enjoy a first look at the gorgeous new Art Garden, designed by landscape architecture firm Confluence. Exclusive to Murdock Society members. $
Art Garden Opening Party Saturday, September 26 | Noon–10 pm After nine months of construction and a complete reimagination of the museum grounds, WAM throws opens its doors, takes down the fencing, and welcomes the public to the Art Garden. StoneLion Puppet Theatre, food trucks, and games delight visitors during the day. The dedication ceremony with Wichita Mayor Jeff Longwell starts at 12:45 pm. Stay for a nighttime jam with live music and dancing from Wichita’s favorite party band, Lotus, starting at 7 pm. The Muse Cafe will be open for Tapas Night from 5 to 10 pm. Film Classic Thursday, October 1 | 1 pm Around the World in 80 Days was a 1956 action adventure comedy film, based on the 1873 book by Jules Verne. Everyone who was anyone appeared in the movie that starred David Niven as the English gentleman Phileas Fogg. He makes a bet that—in 1872, no less!—he can circumnavigate the globe in 80 days, and adventure, mayhem, and romance ignite. The movie won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Shirley MacLaine is the love interest, and other stars with film appearances include Noel Coward, Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich, Red Skelton, and so many more. Fall in Love with WAM Friday, October 2 | Noon Congratulations! You’re engaged. Now what? This common question will be answered during a lunchtime talk in the Howard E. Wooden Lecture Hall. Enjoy a lively panel discussion on how to plan your wedding while maintaining your sanity and relationships. Wichita’s top event experts will share their tips and pointers during this event, part of Wichita’s Bridal Bash. Saturday, October 3 | 10 am–3 pm The Friends of the Wichita Art Museum hold a Mini-Used Book Sale to mark the 80th anniversary of the first appearance of the beloved paperback. The modern paperback launched in 1935 when Penguin Books made inexpensive literary classics available to a mass audience. Curator’s Talk: Tom Otterness Wednesday, October 21 | 1 pm Tom Otterness is a Wichita native and internationally celebrated artist. Since 1995, his large-scale sculpture Dreamers Awake has been a prized addition to the outdoor sculpture collection. Learn about the rich meaning of the work, its poignant content, and playful whimsy from WAM’s former curator, Dr. Novelene Ross. Ross worked closely with Otterness to bring this major sculpture to Wichita, and she will talk about its beginnings at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Curator’s Talk: Scenery, Story, Spirit— American Art and its Impulses Thursday, October 22 | 6 pm From majestic landscape paintings to gritty urban realism, American art evolved as a reflection of the changing impulses in American culture. The special fall exhibition Scenery, Story, Spirit tells the story of this evolution as it draws on the exceptional Peter John Brownlee American art collection of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. The exhibition curator, Peter John Brownlee, Associate Curator for Chicago’s Terra Foundation for American Art, will explore shifts and twists in American art history in this illustrated talk. Discover how American art mirrors cultural context in landscape, genre, still-life, and portrait paintings. 1935 in Film Friday, October 23 | 1 pm Directed by genius German theater director Max Reinhardt, the 1935 movie Midsummer Night’s Dream is a visual masterpiece. Starring Hollywood greats James Cagney, Mickey Rooney, and Olivia de Havilland, it adapts William Shakespeare’s beloved romance comedy into a fantasy film. It took Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing at the Oscars in 1935. Stars Clark Gable and Charles Laughton gave stirring performances depicting brutal tyranny at sea, just as the rumblings of WWII were starting to set in motion in 1935. The American Film Institute includes this movie among the 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time. The movie director and musical choreographer made movies featuring hundreds of showgirls in mesmerizing patterns. During the Great Depression, the dizzying entertainment was immensely popular. The Gold Diggers of 1935 is a classic of the era, and Berkeley named its songand-dance sequence “Lullaby of Broadway” his personal favorite from his distinguished career. Howard Wooden Lecture: Edward Hopper’s Women Thursday, November 12 6:15 pm dinner $ | 7:30 pm free lecture In the 1920s, painter Edward Hopper studied the interiors of New York restaurants and focused on the young women clientele who frequented them. With his 1929 painting Chop Suey and related paintings, Hopper found one of his most potent subjects in the American city—the modern American woman. What Hopper created in these early New York paintings was a look at a social dynamic that was reshaping the urban scene—the influx of young women into the modern work-a-day world. Wichita Art Museum’s 1949 Hopper painting Office at Night continues the social dynamic and psychological intrigue. 1935 in Film Saturday, December 5 | 1 pm Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers remain icons in American film history. With music by Irving Berlin, the 1935 comedy film Top Hat stars the dancing duo in what was the most profitable film in the 1930s for its production company, RKO Pictures. Its sequence “Cheek to Cheek” is a stand-out in the movie, and Astaire’s “Top Hat, White Tie and Tales” is considered his most celebrated tap dance solo. Not surprisingly, the movie is ranked 15th on the American Film Institute’s Greatest Movie Musicals of All Time. A box lunch and individual bottles of wine, beer, and champagne to enjoy during the film will be available for purchase in the Muse Cafe. More Art We Love July 25–November 8, 2015 Even More Art We Love November 14, 2015–February 28, 2016 To recognize WAM’s milestone anniversary and to emphasize our steadfast mission to serve our community, Art We Love, a series of three exhibitions, features works of art chosen by people who call Wichita home or “community curators.” They were invited behind-the-scenes to choose a favorite artwork, place it on view, and share it with the public. In addition, iterations of Art We Love feature a work of art chosen by the Wichita community through Facebook voting. The exhibition aims to embrace Louise Caldwell Murdock’s vision of a museum for Wichita’s citizens by opening the exhibition process to our local community. No Mountains in the Way, 40 Years Later: Kansas Documentary Photography September 12, 2015–January 3, 2016 No Mountains in the Way appeared in 1975. The Wichita Art Museum celebrates the 40th anniversary of this important project of documentary photography in Kansas. James Enyeart, Terry Evans, and Larry Schwarm—artists who have attained considerable achievement in the intervening decades—each examined particular aspects of the Kansas rural environment. Their collective visions combine to poetically reflect place, culture, and custom in Kansas. On loan from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, these images reflect on the essence of Kansas—then and now.

Scenery, Story, Spirit: American Painting and Sculpture from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art September 26, 2015–January 17, 2016 Drawn from the rich holdings of American paintings and sculptures in the collection of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Scenery, Story, Spirit showcases 52 paintings and eight sculptures by some of America’s greatest artists. In both idealized and naturalistically rendered landscapes, in scenes of everyday life, or meticulously detailed images of everyday objects, the exhibition narrates several important chapters in American cultural history: the Civil War and its aftermath, the expansion of national boundaries and the closing of the western frontier, and the transformations wrought by the emergence of new technologies at the dawn of the 20th century.

Art Garden Donors The Wichita Art Museum opened in 1935 by the Arkansas River and downtown. With roughly eight acres, the museum grounds had mature trees, plantings, and lawn. They were adequate, but not distinctive. Amazing patrons determined to change that fact, and the museum embarked on the Art Garden. In 2015, a public campaign was launched with a transformational matching challenge by the Lattner Family Foundation. Because of their generous gift and the outpouring of support from our patrons, members, and the community, we were able to meet this exciting challenge and move further to our campaign goal.
