The Weave House responds to the design brief of a flexible and adaptable residential townhouse for a young family with both parents, two expected children and live-in grandparents. The project is based in Carlton, a mediumdensity inner Melbourne suburb characterised by its abundance of heritage terraced houses from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The house aims to maintain a dialogue with its surrounding neighbourhood by preserving its existing heritage facade, while establishing contemporary and playful spatial qualities that encourage experiential learning for the children. As metaphorical "threads", the inhabitants experience the house by weaving through a series of interconnected indoor and outdoor spaces, forming a unique spatial narrative.

The design consists of a complex programme that aims to meet a variety of functions, and the spaces can be categorised into different zones such as private, communal and outdoor. The spatial organisation strategy is such that communal areas are located in the centre of the house, while private areas are located towards the two ends of the plan. Outdoor spaces are in many cases woven in between the communal and the private.

The spaces are also organised so that the grandparents are given enough privacy and convinience. On the other hand, whether the parents are working inside the home office or in their bedroom, they will always have visual access to parts of the house where their children are likely to play in.

In recent decades, rapid population growth has triggered an ever-increasingly high demand for housing in Melbourne. As opposed to mainstream high-rise apartment towers or low-rise suburban single-family houses, The MacArthur Place North Project experiments with an alternative housing typology, through infill housing design in the inner-suburban location of Carlton. It explores strategies of densification and activation of an urban neighbourhood, by designing a series of interconnected, small-scale multi-unit residences that feature appropriate supporting civic or commercial functions, shared indoor and outdoor facilities, green infrastructure, and methods for laneway activation. As the location of Carlton is close to universities and surrounded by a range of attractive features towards the younger demographic, the project aims to design for people such as young professionals, students and young families.

CONCEPT

65 ELGIN STREET & D E V E L4O MACARTHUR PMENT PLACE N

Because the design brief requires the boundaries of each individual land plot to be preserved, each plot is designed to function independently; however, the circulation around and within the neighbourhood aims to achieve a sense of coherence and continuity in order to encourage the inhabitans to actively interact with the physical environment as well as their neighbours. 13

65 ELGIN STREET

MASTER PLANNING The initial draft of the masterplan imagines No.2, No.4 and No.6-10 MacArthur Place North as residential areas, and No.65 Elgin Street as a civic and commercial space shared among the community. The residential plots are further subdivided into individual blocks containing multiple private units. Between these blocks are laneways that weave through the entire site, creating a sense of connection and points for encouter.

BUILDING SECTION 1

After the master planning stage of this project, each group member chooses two individual land plots to further develop the design solution. I have chosen to reconsider and reimagine 65 Elgin Street as a hybrid of a cafe / bar and a community urban farm, while refining the residential units of 6-10 MacArthur Place North. Using the stepped farming typology, the community farm is accessible from the south end of the site; on the other hand, entry to the cafe / bar is from the north, facing the more public SITE Elgin Street commercial strip.

SECTION 2

South of the cafe kitchen is a storage room for farming equipment, seeds and / or harvested crops.
