The design concept of the new OMS expansion reflects the mission of the World Health Organization, which revovles around the idea of enhancing the health and well-being of the world through the built environment. We focus on three core elements: fresh air, clean water and access to daylight. These basic elements define the layout of the programtic spaces and the physical form.

EXPANSION PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS
GLOBAL HEALTHCARE HEADQUARTERS The administrative tower with its polygonal and transparent facades will maximize views and daylight. The tower is formed by two identical wings which nearly touch, yet slide by and open up to create a transparent gap in between. As staff circulate throughout the building, they are constantly interacting with the surrounding landscape while maintaining a constant connection. The main HUB is a central gathering space that includes the restaurant, conference/meeting rooms, and SHOC room. The central vertical core connects the main HUB to the administrative tower which keeps walking distances to a minimum. The connection to the existing headquarter that leads to the new HUB will be on the main lobby level. Additional connection points for delivery and employees on the lower floors are also provided to ensure that the entire campus and the new addition is well connected as one campus. The central green-space design respects and builds upon the heritage of the existing campus structure and landscape. The solution focuses on maximizing green space by reducing the footprint of the new addition and adding elements such as a reflective pool, which also complements the existing reflective pool on the west. The design of the OMS expansion, which reflects transparency and defines edges, symbolizes the concept of reaching for all parts of the world who are seeking health and wellness.
LEVEL -3
1:1000
New parking garage is directly linked to the existing headquarters and expansion.
LEVEL -2
1:1000
SHOC Room is located in the southwest corner and has direct connection to the administrative tower and exterior.
LEVEL -1
1:1000
Conference area and meeting rooms are centralized and directly below the restaurant area.
OFFICE LEVEL
1:1000
Administrative tower floor plan design is flexible, efficient and allows for flexible use.

A FALL LINE CITY Columbus is one of Georgia’s three Fall Line Cities, along with Augusta and Macon. It is here that the hilly lands of the Piedmont plateau in the north meet the flat terrain of the coastal plains in the south. We have incorporated this strong landscape transition in eco-systems in the overall planning concept for the VA Columbus site. Just as Columbus’ physical features include steep slopes that fall to coastal plains, so too does our project site. The rock swales, or “river,” carrying stormwater runoff bisects the heavily wooded, higher grades of the site. Both our building orientation and site design take advantage of Columbus’ favorable latitude to create an energy-efficient project. IMPACT OF TEXTILES The history of Columbus is centered around the textile industry, which played a major role in the production and logistical crossroads along the Chattahoochee River. In the decades leading up to the Civil War, Columbus was a major port and industrial city as it utilized the river falls as a source of power. Its location was also ideal for both water and rail transportation. As the northern most navigable point on the river from the Gulf of Mexico, Columbus was the center of shipping and military manufacturing. It is also recognized as the last “frontier town” of the original Thirteen Colonies. Columbus remains a city of great historic treasures. The imagery and patterns associated with textiles are reflected in the design of the entry landscapes.

THE MAIN PUBLIC CONCOURSE The main public concourse runs through the center of the building with the circulation around the perimeter and waiting located in the middle. In order to enhance the patient experience, the design offers a more spacious and open feel by widening the main waiting space and lobby. Wayfinding is supported by the clerestory that provides continuous daylighting throughout the main public concourse. This change will have no impact on the functional plan but will enrich the waiting experience. With the circulation around the perimeter of the main public concourse, patients have direct access to the reception desks and other public amenities located along the perimeter. The central waiting area allows staff to have a direct visual connection to patients while visitors enjoy an open waiting area.
PATIENT EXPERIENCE
ARRIVAL TACTICS: • ESTABLISH ICONIC IDENTITY • TWO DISTINCT ACCESS POINTS FOR VEHICLES • CLEAR SEPARATION BETWEEN STAFF & PATIENT PARKING
ENTRY TACTICS: • SAFE PEDESTRIAN CIRCULATION AFTER PARKING • INVITING LINEAR COURTYARD ENTRANCE
ADMITTING TACTICS: • CREATE A WELCOMING HEALING ENVIRONMENT • PERSONAL & EFFICIENT PROCESS
WAITING TACTICS: • SUPPORT THE VARIOUS ACTIVITIES OF VISITORS • INTEGRATE WARM COLORS AND TRANSPARENCIES
DISCHARGE TACTICS: • EXTEND PATIENT CARE THOUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PROCESS

VISUAL CONNECTION By mirroring the building, visitors are able to create a stronger connection to the front entrance. The overall wayfinding is enhanced at a vehicular and pedestrian level.
REFINE CIRCULATION The dynamic curve connects the building and site by extending the curve from the central concourse into the parking area. The curve refines the circulation path and clinical blocks.
ENHANCE QUALITY OF SPACE The expansive glass walls, clerestory and skylights will provide the main central concourse and waiting area with access to daylight and views.
DEVELOPMENT OF FORM
WAY FINDING| patient experience Wayfinding is a crucial element in healthcare facilities. In order to direct the various vehicles accessing the site at the main access driveway, the proposed design implements an intuitive wayfinding concept by creating decision making nodes and elements in the exterior and interior. Our proposed design implements an intuitive open and linear concept which requires less signage to navigate and utilizes more architectural elements to improve understanding such as transparency and materials to reinforce circulation pattern.
TRANSPARENCY:
MATERIALS AND COLORS:
The design maintains a sense of continuity and openness to the outside which helps patients easily navigate through the facility. The public waiting areas on all floors are facing the glass wall oriented towards outside. The main lobby is transparent and open to the east and west parking lot. This will allow patient to easily circulate to and from the building with a minimum amount of signage.
Colors and surfaces in the north and south wings are clearly defined with distinctive finishes to set them apart. The terracotta on the north wing and the metal cladding on the south wing help to distinguish which space you are in. This can greatly help patients and visitors by using these visual cues to navigate the facility.
