Celebrating our Partners in Health Care Donors Anshu and Romia Arora are members of our Partners in Health Care monthly donor club. Anshu is a local RE/MAX realtor, and Romia works at Surrey Hospital as an EEG/EMG technician. They are both passionate about supporting leadingedge health care, and they understand how important our regional hospital is for our community. Recently, they went on a tour of Surrey Hospital to learn more about the wide range of Pediatric (children’s) programs available here. “We’ve been in Surrey since 2007. Surrey is a rapidly growing community and the hospital does great work. Both our kids were born here and the staff that works here is beyond amazing. Supporting the hospital just seemed like an opportunity to support a community icon.”
We thank Mr. and Mrs. Arora for their dedicated and inspiring support. They are making a real difference for patient care, and many lives will be touched by their ongoing spirit of generosity.

SPRING 2017
...our thoracic (chest) surgeons could use your help. Did you know you have a world-class thoracic surgery team, led by Dr. James Bond, here in Surrey—right in your own backyard? Dr. Bond and his team have asked that we reach out to the community to find the funds to purchase the best equipment possible for new “keyhole” surgery (also known as Minimally Invasive Surgery – MIS). MIS equipment makes life-saving cancer surgery more comfortable, with less risk for the thousands of patients who need surgery for lung, stomach and esophageal cancer. Patients from all over the Fraser Valley and other parts of BC come to Surrey Memorial Hospital for specialized MIS surgery procedures. In fact, thanks to Dr. Bond and his team, new MIS procedures have been developed which are only available at Surrey Memorial. We are fortunate to have such a stellar group of specialists which is why we are raising $2 million to give them the best tools available. Ultimately, patients in our region will benefit greatly. We have reached an important milestone earlier this year. Thanks to the generosity of the community we
have been able to purchase the PINPOINT Endoscopic Fluorescence Imaging System. We are the first hospital in BC to have this important equipment. It provides “real-time” visualization of blood flow in vessels, tissues and organs during the MIS procedure. This is important because it helps the surgeons take immediate action if they see potential problems occurring due to blood flow. The goal? To minimize post-operative complications and ensure quicker healing for the patient. D r. James Bond using new PINPOINT Endoscopic Fluorescence Imaging System

Celebrating 25 Years This May, Surrey Hospital & Outpatient Centre Foundation is celebrating 25 years of fundraising for Surrey Memorial Hospital and more recently, Jim Pattison Outpatient Care & Surgery Centre. Since 1992 we have been working with the community to bring life changing, innovative health care to our regional hospital. Thanks to you, we can look back and think about the incredible progress we have made over the past two and a half decades. Major advances in health care technology have been made possible because of donors; equipment such as CAT scanners, portable ultrasound machines,
Family Birthing Unit Vscan Ultrasound $9,480
integrated operating rooms, and special programs such as the children’s hospital and the breast health clinic. Twenty five years of life saving work is really just the beginning. Working together, we can accomplish so much more, such as advances in minimally invasive tools for thoracic (chest) surgeries. Exciting advances in medical technology happen continuously, and with your help, we are able to bring this technology to Surrey. You are helping to bring world class health care closer to home.
This new ultrasound replaces outdated equipment and provides a clearer picture.
Thoracic Surgery PINPOINT Endoscopic System $210,000
Heal Clinic Colposcope $52,000
A tool used for minimally invasive thoracic surgery, it enhances the visual field with high definition white light and fluorescence imaging, enabling surgeons to see blood flow in tissues in real-time.
A special clinic for children who have experienced abuse. Donations have recently funded renovations to make the environment more child friendly. Also, we purchased a new video colposcope to examine a child who may have experienced sexual or physical abuse.
Marten Van Huizen, a Hero in Health Care When Marten Van Huizen met Dr. Ahmad Ashrafi from Surrey’s thoracic surgery team, he was immediately impressed: “Dr. Ashrafi was very engaging from the start, very thorough and frank.” Surgery was Marten’s best hope to remove cancer from both his lungs. He had already endured major surgeries to remove colorectal cancer, but the disease had spread, and the cancer “spots” found in the lungs were not responding to chemotherapy. “The whole thoracic team in Surrey is extremely skilled. We have a top drawer team here. If they are not in the top five in North America, I would be surprised.” Now back at work, Marten is focused on helping the thoracic team by raising funds for a piece of high-tech equipment that will help surgeons with a minimally invasive way to locate cancers that are deep within the lung. Thank you, Marten, for helping future patients get outstanding treatment for their lung cancer.

Breast Cancer Surgery Neoprobe Gamma Detection System $82,000
Urology Urology Scopes 2 purchased $55,200
Used during breast cancer surgery (and other cancer surgeries) to check lymph nodes for the presence of cancer that has spread.
For Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, – allows surgeons to examine the inside of the bladder and to remove kidney stones.
Palliative Care Vision 2 Vein Finder $26,400
Uses infrared light to find veins, resulting in less pokes and pain for patients with tiny veins.
Opthalmology Iridix Cyclo G6 $55,200
A laser system used for the surgical treatment of glaucoma.
