SPOTLIGHT
y l i m a F g n i t a r CelebCaregivers Treasure Valley Hospice had the honor of serving the Ridgway family. Family Caregivers have a special responsibility that changes their lives forever. Hospice not only serves the individual with the terminal illness but the entire family. I had the opportunity to interview Kris Ridgway Turner after the death of her father. Here is a summary of her personal story. At the age of 39, I learned my father was diagnosed with ALS, a terminal disease. This journey has changed my life in many ways. I have learned that life is unpredictable, to try to live life without regrets and to live life how you want to be remembered. The love and support our family has for each other cannot be put into words perfectly. In the course of our experience, I found myself believing this chapter of our lives was a time of privilege. During my father’s illness I spent a great deal of time with him. We spent a lot of time reading and going through old family photos. I learned many wonderful things about my father’s life that I would not have known or would have taken for granted. During this time period, I did not understand how much I would treasure these memories. Although it was difficult to watch my father decline, it was an honor to spend this time with Dad. If I could offer any advice to family caregivers it would be to remember

The Ridgway Family your loved one still wants to laugh, talk and teach. Regardless of what is happening to their body they are the same person that you have always loved and admired. With my Dad’s diagnosis (ALS), we could see his body deteriorating, however his mind and soul was still strong. The body is just a shell; the person you love still exists inside. Also, leave the pity at the front door! As a caregiver, you must grow personally. I encourage you to get past the self-pity, ill feelings and hate for the disease. You can - live in the NOW with positive thinking. Hospice was an invaluable resource to our lives during this journey. They were role models in the ways that they demonstrated genuine care. It was clear that it was not just a job; they connected with the whole family and become a part of the family during this time.
We are paying it forward. After Dad passed away, our entire family began raising money for ALS research. We started the R&S ALS Awareness Golf tournament. This is an annual event. Our family’s goal is to be able to continue raising money for ALS research, with the hopes of one day finding a cure for this disease. Favorite Bible Verses to Get Us through This Time: (Kris): Jeremiah 29:11-12: For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. Melenie Stone
American Family Insurance Agent
Putting her community first! M
any people take a head-in-the-sand approach regarding insurance. Are you one of them? Melenie Stone of American Family Insurance understands that although insurance is not a popular topic of conversation, it is a necessary one. Her goal is to help consumers make informed decisions to give them peace of mind that in a catastrophic event they will be sufficiently protected. Melenie is passionate about educating her customers concerning the importance of being adequately insured. “My cousin passed away with no life insurance, leaving the family to pick up the financial pieces. I don’t want that type of situation to ever happen to anyone.” Melenie stands on her platform that, “No one thinks twice about protecting their piece of wood (their home), protecting their piece of metal (their car),
but they tend to neglect to protect the most important thing, themselves. Please leave a legacy for your family.” Melenie’s specialty is insuring the local farmer. As a farm kid from Montana, she has deep ties to the farming community. She knows the farmer is busy tending to his responsibilities and may not have time to keep track of his numerous pieces of equipment. Melenie “gets” the farmer and prides herself on her unique hands-on customer service approach. Her knowledge was evidenced last year, as she was the recipient of the Peak Harvest Award as a top producer for farm & ranch.

for Big Brothers Big Sisters www.bbbsidaho.org or the Mentoring Network www. mentoringnetworkid.org
Melenie stresses that when everyone has proper coverage, risk is reduced and in turn rates stay down, benefiting everyone. AFI offers the lowest home rates in the Treasure Valley because of their proactive approach toward pride of ownership. Claims and costly mistakes can be avoided, such as knowing what breed of dog may prevent you from getting an affordable homeowner’s policy. Melenie teaches her clients how to make informed decisions regarding claims and how to keep current and future premiums low. Melenie is a dedicated volunteer and mentor in her community. She donates her time to the Caldwell Revitalization Project and board and is excited to be part of a strategy to turn downtown Caldwell into a vibrant place where residents are proud of where they live. She is also on the Big Brothers Big Sisters executive board, promotes Soroptimist International, and mentors with the Mentoring Network. At-risk youth are close to her heart, as she has adopted two children with this background. She reminds us that, “Mentoring at-risk youth when they are young will create a better community for everybody. If you give back to the community it comes back to you tenfold. Choose to make a difference - life is too short.”

rIibfest
S
Bringing the Best
omething’s cookin’ on the corner of Eagle and Fairview this June as Meridian’s Julius M. Kleiner Memorial Park welcomes the Northwest RibFest.
The very first RibFest last year hosted over 50,000 barbeque lovers over a two-day time span. This year it’s four days of finger-licking, lip-smacking fun, and attendance numbers are expected to more than double, making it one of the very largest events the city of Meridian has ever seen. Kasey Thompson, RibFest organizer and promoter, explained to us his now tried-and-true recipe for a RibFest. “Our success has a lot to do with our marketing company. We’ve had some big contracts with Coca-Cola, Idaho Distributing, and almost every barbeque company in the Valley was a sponsor. We put up over 140 banners all over Meridian, so if you went through town you couldn’t miss them. We made 750,000 fliers and had the barbeque restaurants insert them into their bills. Then, we announced a fishing tournament, with two grand prizes of $10,000 each. Top to bottom, we went out and just killed it with our presence.” “Other things we’ve done,” Thompson shares, “is partner with everyone from Sportsmans Warehouse, to Dave and Busters, to Big Al’s, to Winco, to Albertsons. Prior to our event, everyone who goes into any of those businesses will be getting a RibFest event promo card.” Clever marketing made and will make the difference, but this year, organizers are kicking up the sauce another giant notch. 20
| The Urban Liaison Magazine - Treasure Valley
“You’re going to get excited when I tell you how we’ve changed it,” Thompson predicts, “We went to the Reno RibFest and brought in the top ten biggest and best barbeque teams in the nation. These are teams that worked under contract of FEMA during natural disasters who bring in the diesel trucks and feed tens of thousands of people.” In other words, there will be more than enough grub. “Every team can turn over 1500 racks of ribs per day,” Thompson adds, “Many of those teams have their own TV shows and restaurants.” Amphitheater entertainment accelerates as Journey Unauthorized electrifies the eighties. Next, the stage will hold the industry award winning, four-million-album-selling Ty Herndon. Meridian can also brag it’s hosted Billy Dean and his eleven top-ten single, Grammy-winning songs and smiles. Plus, prepare to get out your license and proof of registration, since Warrant will also be in town. Everyone’s joining in on the fun, with the Idaho Lottery making a game of the RibFest via their lottery tickets during the months of May and June. Eight top barbeque teams will be serving it up hot, the kids are going to be in hog heaven with tons of free activities, $2,500 in prizes will be doled out to the winner of the amateur wing cook-off. There will be twice the number of vendors as last year, and this year sampler cards will be available so you can taste and vote for your favorite flavors. As for the "big fish" it’s only fair to double the money, since RibFest has officially doubled its days. Saturday and Sunday at noon, two ten-thousand-dollar prizes totaling $20,000 will tempt anyone to throw out a line for the honored catch brought up from the hatchery in Twin Falls. The big boy will have been off his food pellets by then, so he’ll be good and hungry.

Help Idaho’s whole purpose is to keep communities healthy and prosperous with a firm foundation comprised of vibrant locally-owned businesses. The RibFest is one of the best opportunities for local businesses to show Help Idaho and their communities their support. With so many people walking into Julius Kleiner Memorial Park to see, smell, and eat, if a business is brand-building, this is the tastiest time to make its presence known. Here’s the hook: The RibFest is absolutely, totally and completely free to attend. It’s family-oriented, and it’s going to be some all-out barbeque-ing, fun, so grab your bib and rib out.
Taste ribs, pulled pork, or chicken wings cooked by the competitors and vote for your favorite in the new People’s Choice category with the RibFest’s new sampler cards. You’ll also get a commemorative t-shirt at the event! Grab a fishing pole and the chance to make money while fishing for the big one. This year there will be two $10,000 derbies, so you can double your chances of catching yourself ten thousand bucks.

Rock Meets Americana via Boise-Based Band - New Transit.
F
ormed in 2009, New Transit has enjoyed remarkable tenure as a staple in the Boise area music scene. They are now following up their much heralded 2011 CD Debut release (appropriately titled “ONE”) with their sophomore CD, scheduled for release in Spring of 2013. "One" enjoyed exceptional attention and success both through merchandise sales and among critics, and expectations are that their second CD will be even bigger. Idaho Statesman entertainment editor, Michael Deeds, called it the “mid-year front runner for best local CD” and..."hands down the best local release in 2011,” referring to New Transit as "part of the upper echelon of the Boise music scene.” In July 2012 New Transit shared the stage with notable recording artists Chris Isaak, and the legendary rock icon, Leon Russell. In October, Go Listen Boise (a non-profit organization) elected New Transit to represent the Boise original music scene by performing in Fort Collins, CO at the “Spokesbuzz.” Drawing strong comparisons to the likes of Neil Young, Drive by Truckers and the Kingston Trio, "New Transit will draw you in and keep you there,” states Heidi Kraay, from the Boise Performing Arts Examiner. For information, tour dates and future releases, follow New Transit on Facebook and Reverb-Nation.

POKE
“POKE” performs old-school country, hillbilly, juke-joint swing, rockabilly, polka, surf, and rock ... all combined into a unique style all their own which is upbeat, entertaining, and FUN for all ages. Stevie Ray, Wayne the Train, and many other legendary Texas performers were educated in Austin. The man called B-Rad got up close and personal with these masters and learned every detail about western swing, country and blues. Bearing witness to legendary riverside festivals, late night brawls, and Sunday walks of shame back from Nuevo Laredo, B-Rad picked up a guitar and started crafting his own musical stories, many of which are true. After a stint in Santa Barbara, B-Rad ended up in the ultimate trucker’s town, Boise, Idaho, a town where the Big Rigs used to make way through the busiest part of town, gearing down in front of the Capitol steps. After a few years in various bands (Rowdy Yates, Exit 51, the Red Fords), he happened across a young cow-billy by the name of Diesel, who had played bass in a hot punkrock band. Right there and then, POKE was born. B-Rad told Diesel he’d buy him a new Doghouse bass if Diesel learned to play it. Diesel couldn’t believe when it arrived, back in 2004, and today - Diesel’s Doghouse provides the boom-chucka, clickity-clack rhythm that gets Poke headin’down the track. Drummer “Smokin’ J” was raised on a steady diet of sounds from great drummers, and he gobbled up all of the right moves. Jay joined in on the fun without one rehearsal, and has been a key member ever since. Boise veteran pickers rotate through the line-up, including ‘Shakey’ Dave Manion on Tele and steel guitar; ‘Johnny Shoes’ Pisano on guitar and mandolin; and Bernie Reilly on fiddle, accordion, and organ.

I have been covering local music in the Urban Liaison Magazine for 2 years now and it has been amazing! I owe a great deal of thanks to the publisher of the UL, Cheryl Richard. It is an honor to bring our talented local musicians more publicity. My goal is to inform everybody that we don’t have to spend a lot of money on traveling performers that take our money and run. We all need to help our friends and neighbors, by supporting the bands I highlight in each issue. Please take the time to find and “like”the band I manage, called Grindsole. Find it on Facebook at www.facebook.com/grindsole. If you are in a band and need help getting started, please contact me at chris. holton@ymail.com or by phone, 208-861-2847. Summer Issue 2013

Boise’s Got the Bandits You never know what answering the phone can lead to. When Theo Hall with the NFL called Juan McCary, he asked the loaded question,
“Have you got any time to help with a football team?” “Let’s do this,” Juan replied, who became an owner and CEO of the new Boise Bandits PDFL team. That conversation started a domino effect that’s still going strong.
Why Boise? “Because Boise loves its football players and loves its sports, it’s the sort of community that would embrace a team of guys trying to move ahead.” The first step was to acquire the best kind of people. Executive VP Daniel Mercado, GM Coby Saulls, Head Coach Jim McGahey, Assistant Coaches Dustin Vandermeer, Kip Krofts, Don Dwyer, and Director of Player Personnel, Odell Barnes.
Everything about the team seems different. Juan agrees, saying, “Let me be clear. This is not about money. We’ll be successful based on reputation. We were able to get players who approached us from other teams, because they knew this was the place to be. We’ll make every effort to help these guys.” “I’m just someone that wants to bring good people together,” Juan adds, “You’ll learn we’re all the same, and get past differences real quick. These events bring that out.” When asked what the players need, Juan laughed and responded, “What don’t we need?” While support of all kinds is appreciated, most of all, the owner/CEO tells us they need fans. “We need people to believe in us, that’s what we need. We need family-oriented businesses to partner with us, to come out to the games and do their thing.” The Eagle High Stadium holds 4,000 spectators, and the Bandits intend to fill every seat. At the first game on May 25th, there will be something for everyone. With activities for kids and others out in front of the stadium, local businesses and vendors, it’s going to be a hopping place.
“I chose people I’ve been friends with for years,” says Juan. Players say Coach Jim was one of the biggest reasons they chose Boise. Knowing a team’s first year can be rough, Juan tells us, “We’re starting out of the garage, and we’re not corporate, but this is the way it should be done, through the community. If they embrace us, the sky’s the limit.”
“When you leave, you’ll be able to say you had a great time. Come on out and enjoy yourself.”
The Bandits were picky about who they chose to take on. Many players share they are God-trusting family men who love their moms. The Bandits have provided personal profiles on their website, introducing players like the brilliant mind of AJ Allen, the smart and funny Ricky Thomas, Jr., communications major and proud daddy Chris Aguado, and follow-through guy, Bryant Edwards. Most of the players have never been to Idaho before, don’t know anyone yet, and don’t know what to expect, other than to be warmly welcomed. They’ve left encouraging girlfriends, wives, children and family behind to play under the Boise name and to eventually get their shot at the NFL. The Bandits have a firm goal to interact with and help the community, especially within the schools, wanting to get kids to come out to games and interact with players. “The players get something out of it, and the kids get something out of it,” Juan tells us, which is why he selected players kids could respect. “Many times, people don’t get the chance to get close to local players. We’re giving the public their background and history. That way, they’re not just rooting for that player for their stats, they’re rooting because he’s a good person doing good things.”

glam Adelmann Event Center: Simply A Modern Tradition
T
he Adelmann Event Center is cared for by a family who saw there was a need for a charming and nostalgic venue downtown. They felt a personal attachment to the building because its vintage architecture (German/Chinese/Roman) made it a desirable place to have functions. Located by the capital with a view overseeing the city, the original WillsAdelmann block was built in 1902 and the building itself was raised in 1906. It is one of Boise’s historical landmarks.
The proprietor's mission is to create a stress free environment with no rules or curfew while maintaining the integrity of 7,500 sq. ft. of full service that enables various functions from weddings, receptions, corporate events, proms, birthdays, anniversaries, reunions, graduations or casino nights. With a full premise liquor license, 2 lounges, bars and a patio, the Adelmann can hold 250 people and has already held over 300 events since the fall of 2009. Discounts are available for early bookings and those who have served in our military. Venue pricing ranges from $100 an hour to $2,250. The most attractive feature besides the looks of the place is the full fine dining menu. “What we love the best is when happy people come and happy people leave,“ owner Karen Buich shares. “Our family-like staff attends to all your needs and the operation is turnkey which means no need to set up/tear down, tables, linens and chairs are provided, and the design of the décor is so ornate that minimal additional décor is needed,” she continues. The stand out elegance can be noted in the open Champagne Room with its tiered tower pagoda known as a turret in architecture, to the Gold Rush brick of the Cabernet Room and the rich mahogany wood of the bars. Upstairs and down, this is a most unique establishment.

Desiree Warrell Urban Coiffure
T
his coming July there’s going to be an exciting event happening here in Boise. Hairstyles from all over the State of Idaho will be able to compete against one another in the first hair competition in this state: Battle Coiffure.
Most stylists consider themselves “artists,” creative stylists where the hair is their canvas. Sadly the majority of them do not get to express that; most clients would prefer a trim, layers, or highlights. Expressing your true creative side gets left to be performed on a mannequin head, or in your daydreams. Being able to give a client a purple Mohawk would rarely go over well, or shaving a creative art piece in the side of a client’s head with some clippers, would probably shock most. Battle Coiffure will be a chance for stylists to show their peers what they love about this business, the creativity, precision, bright out-of-the-ordinary color, whatever the stylist feels that they excel at. They will be able to compete in one of several categories which include: Men’s Classic and Woman’s Classic barber. Cosmetologists will be able to compete in this category: Avant-Garde. This will be the most creative category and the most exciting because of that. Editorial is another category. It will be very intriguing to see what each entry presents to the judges. Color is another one of the categories; cosmologists are the only ones licensed in this category so barbers will not be able to enter into this selection. There are a few other categories that Battle Coiffure is considering to add, like hair tattooing, which was mentioned earlier. That is where a barber or cosmetologist uses a special type of clippers and clips a design into the head of the client, leaving a predetermined design that is temporary. This process is very creative and challenging; it takes patience and a lot of practice in order to make the perfect design. Trust me when I say the finished product makes it look so much easier then it actually is. The stylists will provide their own models. This is also an important part of the process because you want the models to match your style and not be afraid to show off your finished work with the right pizzazz and professionalism needed to impress the judges. Not everyone was meant to walk the runway.

It seems like such fun, but when you actually get up there and hundreds of people are looking only at you, it can be quite frightening, so making sure that your model knows what they are in for is a must. A local cosmetology school, Oliver Finley, has agreed to let the stylists use their facility so that the stylists can get their models ready in advance, which will be a big help for those people that may be coming from out of town. Three judges will determine who will prevail. These three judges are masters in the business. Two that have been confirmed are Gregory Hinshaw of Sun Valley, Idaho. He was a world-renowned platform hair artist that now owns his own salon where he works on the hair of the elite. Taylor Jameson owns her own trendy hair salon in Cincinnati, Ohio. She owns a razor line and teaches classes called Rock the Razor across the United States. Hair Coiffure is planning on this competition being an event to be remembered. It will be on the 14th and 15th of July with events on both days and an award ceremony on the last day, including drinks and a DJ to entertain. A special award will be given to each winner along with a gift bag of prizes that the winner will love, including a shirt with the Battle Coiffure logo on it. This event is open to the public. Tickets will be available to purchase on the website. Stylists are encouraged to let their family, friends and clients know so that they can have a large roar in the audience! If you know that your stylist is entering you should come to support and watch the talent and creativity that your stylist has that you didn’t otherwise get to enjoy. There will be a photographer named Rob Ayres that will be shooting all of the models so that the stylists and models can have their finished work for their portfolio. We have made a huge effort to cover it all. We really want Idaho not to be left out anymore. Most people do not know that stylists are only licensed to do hair in the state that they receive their license in, excluding a few exceptions. We want as many cosmetologist/barbers to be inspired, to express their inspiration and showcase it for all to see. It’s what keeps the creativity alive in us and inspires us to want to grab a pair of shears and say, “YES I CAN!”

Soon after graduation he relocated to Boise and set roots at Graeber & Co., an exclusive Aveda salon. There he thrived for nine years and further improved his skills as a stylist and developed his incredible eye for beauty and artistic expression. Tod eventually outgrew his surroundings and decided it was time to have his own creative space. Soon he opened The Coco Fringe, his dream personified. The chic, boutique hair salon was dedicated to nothing but first rate class, style, expression, education and service. He kept Coco Fringe alive and thriving for seven years, but said goodbye to become a part of the amazing Azure Hair Studio family.

A Leap of
Leap ~ a: to pass abruptly from one state or
topic to another b: to act precipitately
Faith~ a: allegiance to duty or a person: loyalty b (1): fidelity to one's promises (2): sincerity of intentions
b (1): firm belief in something for which there is no proof (2): complete trust
I
am starting with definitions because I need them myself as I begin my Leap of Faith. Some of you know that I have had my business Babe on a Budget for about 2 ½ years. What started as an idea turned into a home based business; selling all things ladies love (clothes, jewelry, purses, etc.) in my home, at parties and events. As things often do, my business began to take on a life of its own. What I mean to say is my business became the vehicle for me to make a difference in the lives of women. It became my passion and my purpose.
So how does having fun and selling cute stuff change the lives of people? By changing my life and challenging the way I thought about and perceived myself. As a young girl, teenager and a woman, the messages I received about myself were as follows. “If I am not a certain size, wearing a certain label and look a certain way, then there is something wrong with me.” For many years I carried around the feeling of “if only”. If only I were thinner, I would be happy. If only I had the money to buy those labels, I would feel better about myself and how I look. If only I were that blonde haired, blue eyed, thin ideal, I could get/have what I want/need. I believed and bought into this lie. As I grew into a woman, matured, married and had kids, I still believed the lie. Until my late 30’s, I realized I was still fighting the same feelings I did at 15. I started doing some things that were very out of character for me such as dance classes and being a little more “out there in the world” (that is another story). But my safe shell and belief system started to crack. With those cracks came new ideas and thoughts. I have always loved to shop and had a lot of experience in retail. Friends commented on items I would buy for myself. So I took a chance, a leap of faith, and started Babe on a Budget with a little money, 2 clothing racks and a lot of talking with friends. Those friends told their friends, who in turn invited me to events and networking. This was fun and I made some extra income. Then, something else happened. I started talking with the women; women who felt bad about how they thought they looked. These women did not fit the ideal of what society said was right, perfect or in. These women felt like me, the way I had felt my entire life. I started asking them and myself, “Why? Why should someone else get to tell me that I am not enough, pretty enough, thin enough, smart enough?” Those people are not God, judge or jury. What about all the different countries and cultures where there are so many beautiful women that defy our standards? God and the universe does not make mistakes…..who I am and who you are ……not a mistake. I believe everyone needs to be the best version of themself. I also believe that we go through many transformations. I have come to a place of peace in my life. Yes, I need to drop some weight, be more organized and work out more. I am working on those things. The peace comes from knowing and

accepting that even at my healthiest weight, by society standards I will still be a plus-size woman. Yes, a size 10 or 12 is plus-size. I cannot change the frame or bone structure of my body. All of the things I have fought against and hated about myself ended up being a gift. A gift that I have learned to accept and share with others. That is where I am naturally and if society says that is wrong, well, THEY ARE WRONG. All of this brings me to where I am now. My business has been my vehicle to share this message of self-acceptance and love to women. To challenge women to entertain the idea of thinking differently about how they feel and their image. To be the best version of their best self. For women to realize we all feel this way to some degree and we are not alone. I never thought that 2 ½ years ago, I would have touched the lives of many beautiful women inside and out in the Treasure Valley. Those women have shared with me how my words have helped them think differently. I never imagined that I would start this next chapter; moving my business out of my home to a retail location, expanding my vision and message to reach more lovely ladies. Of course there is shopping and bargains and fun. But it is more than that. Babe on a Budget is a place where ladies can come and feel special, valued and heard. That is where my leap of faith is going. Every women needs to hear and know this, “There is only one you, there are no duplicates. If you don’t share yourself in this life, there are a lot of people who miss out.” Take that leap of faith. You never know where you will end up.
Wishing you love, light and happiness.

Your Summer Style Guide
Wear-to-Work Rules:
1. When in doubt, opt for
a dress. Instead of having to match prints - - a dress provides an entire outfit. Wraps, shirtdresses, and sheaths are all safe to wear at the office.
2. Steer clear of sheer. Avoid anything that exposes your cleavage, stomach, or tattoos on your arms.
3. Choose shorts with
caution. Always make sure they are mid-thigh length or try a pair of Bermuda shorts in a dark, solid color.
4. Layer successfully.
Aryonna Richard
You can wear a tank top--just make sure it’s under a jacket. And if you’re going to pair a dress with leggings, wear them in a darker color.
As the days fill with sunshine and the temperature starts to rise, you may be thinking, “How can my style encompass that lazy days of summer vibe and then change to professional when I’m at the office?”
I
t’s easier than you might think if you stick to these basic rules for daytime, to afternoon and of course the weekend! A fresh season doesn’t require a wardrobe overhaul but if you’re looking to pick up some new items look for stripes, lace, floral, and checkerboard. All of these patterns are straight from the runway and can be worn to work, shopping with your girlfriends or even on a night out if you follow my--what to wear this summer rules. When you’re not at the office, summer is the perfect time to have fun with your style! Take a walk on the wild side by picking up bright hues and short, leg baring hemlines. The bolder the better is also true when it comes to accessories! You will need an assortment of stripes, funky floral patterns, and even a little lace to take your look from day to night this summer. Trend Alert! Retro Liner is hot this summer. Think of the sixties winged liner, with an 80’s edge--and you’ve got the perfect combination for dazzling eyes this summer. From Amanda Seyfried, to Emmy Rossum--everyone is rocking the Winged Liner trend and you could be next. Just run over to Mae’s Avon Boutique in Nampa for the SuperExtend Liquid Eye Liner in Black. For the best application results, put the eyeliner on first and then shape it with a cotton swap and makeup remover.
Fantastic Floral:
The freshest flowers aren’t meant to hide in abstract prints or muted colors anymore! Bright prints are blooming at full capacity this season and worn in different ways like realistic, cartoon, or with a bit of a vintage edge.
Lovely Lace:
Sizzling Stripes:
Stay on-trend by getting your stripes this season. The runways revealed thicker styles done as tops, dresses, skirts, skinny jeans, wedge sandals, ballet flats, tote bags.
This delicate, ultrafeminine fabric is ready to breeze into every girl's wardrobe. Whether crafted in dress form or as a skirt--when used sparingly lace can be a chic accent.

Q&A
UM: Why did you create this festival of flair? RA: Creative people are so fun to work with and our area needs to have a fashion community on the map. We appreciate art and beauty and this is the best way to showcase it. UM: When, where and what is in store for us this year? RA: On July 18th-21st, the newly remodeled Mardis Gras building, which seats 500, will have a red carpet, local star-studded entrance leading to a catwalk where 5 different designers will reveal amazing avantgarde styles each night. Many shows, like mine, will feature couture. Others are using organic or repurposed materials, making new and original designs. UM: Last year you had over 150 participants behind the scenes including models, hair and makeup stylists, designers and photographers. This year there will be even more. Why do they do it?
RA: They work so hard because they are passionate about their industry. This is the pinnacle way for them to have camaraderie, gain recognition, receive applause and get their work snapped by photographers. UM: How do you do it all?
L
RA: We work hard throughout the year, enjoy supportive fans that fuel our creativity and have superb sponsors such as the UL, NLP Secure, Nyobi Audio, Ayres Creative and Boise Model Management.

Sawtooth: An Estate Winery of Distinction T here is mounting enthusiasm for the future of Idaho wine country in the Snake River Valley American Viticultural Area. Boasting an ideal climate for a wide variety of grapes, the region allows for the production of a diverse range of wines. Tucked between breathtaking views of the Owyhee Mountains and the Boise Valley is the Sawtooth Estate Winery. Idaho’s largest vineyard is ideally located on the rolling slopes near the Snake River.
As the region celebrates Idaho Wine Month in June, it is an ideal time to recognize Sawtooth Winery’s distinct qualities. Take for example the 20 grape varietals in its vineyard, which produce a wide array of red and white wines. “The many varieties of grapes mean that we can create a lot of different flavors in our wines,” Sawtooth Winery Tasting Room Manager,Kelli Geselle, said. “This means we can have reds that are more fruit-forward, or whites that are especially dry or sweet.” The 470-acres of grapevine-covered trellises encircle a state-of-the-art production facility, a feature most wineries do not have on site. Sawtooth Winery has its own custom-crush facility, which allows for more control in the winemaking process. The barrel rooms are also quite up-to-date with built-in humidifiers for indoor climate control, an important element in the dry high desert. Sawtooth Winery is the second largest producer of Idaho wine, behind nearby neighbor Ste. Chappelle, with approximately 10,000 cases bottled annually. The majority of other Idaho vineyards have a more boutique approach, bottling and distributing a much smaller number. The many different Sawtooth wines, with their distinctive flavors and excellent quality, speak for themselves. Head Winemaker, Bill Murray and Assistant Winemaker, Meredith Smith, spend countless hours in crafting the taste and style which create the libations sold at retailers throughout the region as well as the bottled masterpieces sold only at select wine shops and the winery itself. The wine made at Sawtooth stands alone in distinguishing the vineyard from others in the area, but the winery offers much more to add to its
Jessica McAnally
appeal. The beautiful grounds and amazing views provide the perfect backdrop for weddings and celebrations held there throughout the summer months. “We average about 30 to 40 weddings each year,” Geselle said. “We also have events such as Sangria Sundays, Wine Club meetings and Farm to Fork Dinners.” Education is always an element in wine-centric events that Sawtooth holds. Winemaker dinners provide guests with the opportunity to taste foods prepared specifically to complement specific types of wine and background information is given about how the grapes were grown, pressed and mixed to create the drink in front of them. Other activities, such as vineyard hikes, give participants a unique perspective. “Spending time walking through the vineyards gives people the opportunity to feel the soil, touch the grapes, and really see how the process works,” Geselle said. “We want to create an exciting destination feel to our winery.”
The Sawtooth Estate Winery is located south of Lake Lowell at 13750 Surrey Lane in Nampa. For information about visiting the vineyard, their tasting room and for upcoming events, call 208.467.1200 or view their website at www.sawtoothwinery.com.

Food is an incredible way to bring people together for a celebration. Great food makes the gathering even more special. The significance of sharing a good meal is not lost on the variety of clients who come to 3 Girls Catering.
F
rom brides to businesses giving intimate parties or large events, 3 Girls Catering has proven to be a company that provides its clients with delicious foods, beautifully presented with stellar service. When 3 Girls Catering owners Gretchen Talbert and Lisa Mason first moved to the Treasure Valley six years ago, they were on the lookout for an opportunity to develop their catering business. Being new to the area, they researched other local caterers to see how they operated. When they came across a company that was struggling and was considering closing without refunding bride’s deposits, they stepped in and offered to take care of the clients. In the beginning, many events were catered at a loss, simply to help those who would have been placed in a difficult situation by the former catering company’s closure. 3 Girls Catering spent a large amount of time developing relationships and gaining the trust and respect of their clients. Within a very brief amount of time, 3 Girls Catering was welcome at venues across Boise and had a continually growing reputation for excellence.
3 Girls Catering has grown exponentially in recent years, primarily due to word of mouth regarding the positive experiences of both clients and guests. “No advertising comes anywhere close to having someone who loves us tell their friends and family how great we are,” said Talbert. 3 Girls Catering participates in many community events and fundraisers and supports local farmers in order to use the freshest, locally grown ingredients whenever possible. They support local farms by catering Farm to Fork Wine Dinners at Sawtooth Winery, and a changing menu at the Ste. Chapelle Winery’s Summer Concert Series. Although developing and changing is a nature of the busi-
As one of the owners, Gretchen Talbert knows how important quality is to the catering business and is proud of 3 Girls Catering’s services. It is ingrained into the company’s values that nothing should be served that they would not be proud to serve their own family. “That’s always in the back of my head.” Talbert said. “Would I want my mom or kids eating that? Would I want my family to be treated that way? The answer has to be yes, or something needs to change.” The diversity of events is one of the thrills of the fast paced catering industry. Talbert expresses that it is the most exciting aspect of the job. “You can serve the same menu at the same venue and it will still be different than the last time,” Talbert said. “The personal element can change the whole event.”

H
Have you checked out “Brown Shuga Soul Food” yet? It’s a food truck serving up authentic homemade-fresh-daily Soul Food, Cajun and Creole. If you haven’t experienced it yet, boy oh boy, are you in for a treat! Its home base is in Boise at 24th & Fairview. They also cater and are a long-time favorite at festivals. This place ROCKS! I tried it on Tuesday (closed Mondays), and I liked it so much I went back every single day that week! The food is OUT of this world delicious, plus - - TA DA!! It’s very reasonably priced! It’s owned by Yvonne Anderson-Thomas, an experienced chef and one of the most delightful people you’ll ever meet. More about Yvonne in a minute.
So. To start my research for this article, I went on Tuesday and had a big bowl of the best Gumbo known to man, along with hot buttery Cornbread and a yum-o side of Red Beans & Rice. Delicious!! It was so good I called my friend Shirley and we went back Wednesday! That day we had juicy, tender Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Mac & Cheese and sides of Sweet Potato Soufflé. Oh mannn… Thursday I drove over again and wolfed down BBQ Ribs (be still my heart!), creamy Coleslaw, delicious Potato Salad and a side of true home-cookin’ Collard Greens. (OK, I don’t usually eat this much but remember, this is research!) Then my husband wanted to try it because I’d been talking about it all week, so Friday we showed up AGAIN for Fried Chicken (Mmmm!), Black Eyed Peas, another helping of that amazing Mac & Cheese AND a bowl of fresh, hot, homemade peach cobbler. I mean, we were stuffed to the gunnels but I swear I could have eaten more. The food is too good for words. Yvonne Anderson-Thomas is no newbie in the food industry. She operated a thriving sit-down restaurant called “A Piece of Cake” in Mountain Home for many years before moving to Boise in 2003, where she began her popular catering business. She added the food truck in June, 2011. “I didn’t want to spend “$300,000-$400,000 on a new restaurant” said Anderson-Thomas. “Since I’d already been successful at catering, it was an easy transition.” Anderson-Thomas is a finalist in the National Organization of Women Biz Owners contest, and just won Best Food Truck in the “KTVB 7’s Best” contest. Last year she won 2nd place for the best BBQ in Boise (voted by Boise Weekly) and a new contest just started for the Idaho Statesman’s “Best.” You can vote for Brown Shuga on their Web page. (hinttt!) Stop by at 24th & Fairview and check ‘em out! Yvonne and her summer intern, Logan Keeble, are dishing up quality soul food like you’ve never tasted. And remember their catering services for your next gathering! People LOVE this delicious food.

Buy Local, Live Local and Eat Local.
Yes, Eat Local. We all have choices each and every time we decide to dine out. Many local restaurants in our area are locally owned and operated. Some local restaurant owners go out of their way to support local food producers in our area, they strive to use local products each and every day. Which in turn, keeps our local food producers, farmers and ranchers in business. It’s a local “Circle”. Please enjoy reading our reviews about the Urban Liaison “Locally Owned” Restaurants, some of the best places to eat in our valley. Shige Sushi Express of Meridian Shanaz and her husband recently acquired the neighboring SHIGE SUSHI EXPRESS in Meridian. In case you’re not up on the latest, here is a quick lesson in sushi. Sushi is a general term for Japanese cuisine made of rice topped with assorted seafood (may be raw, cooked or marinated) and vegetables. “Sashimi” is simply sliced raw fish. “Nigiri” is two large slabs of raw fish over rice. “Maki” is rice rolled with ingredients and topped with the same. Shige Sushi Express of Meridian offers all of these choices. Now owned by Shanaz and her husband and named after her Japanese brother-in-law, Yashimasa Shige, this is the first franchise of Shige Sushi, which was originally 520 S. Meridian Rd. Ste. 90 established in downtown Boise in 1992. There is a wide variety of (Behind Shanaz HKC) fresh sushi creations to choose from, and portions vary from only $1.00 a plate, to chef’s creations like the Great Wall of Dragon roll (208) 447-8558 and the famous Boise roll (fried potato and eel). Non-sushi lovers www.shigecuisine.com can order from Shanaz as well, or vice versa. Dine inside or on the shaded patio. Sayonara! See you there.

and the living is easy! Let’s take a few trips and support some local valley treasures that can literally help us brew up some fun. These are places that make us feel as if we are on summer vacation whether in the cool indoors or on their decadent patios. Come see what these destinations have to offer any summer day or night, either with your spouse or a posse of friends and let’s see where the fun takes us.
Raise your forks and pop your corks at Crush Tapas Restaurant and Wine Bar on the corner of Eagle Rd. and State St. Crush’s cellar features critically acclaimed wines, and house pours range from $5-$8 with $2 off happy hour daily from 4-6. Wine enthusiasts will love Wednesdays for the Chef ’s Special & Wine Tasting, where 5 exquisite vinos are featured for $10-$15. The next “Iron Chef ” will be June 3rd with 5 teams competing for bragging rights. Crush’s high class patio boasts a hosted bar, live music, movie screen, sing-a longs and more. The Soft White 60’s with a Kings of Leon sound return from San Francisco to play July 29th. This is definitely a smooth way to relax and un"wined". Experience the taste of the Mediterranean Sea by taking in the views at Cazba. The dishes range from heaping helpings of hummus and toasty pitas with tzatziki, mouth-watering calamari and exotic kabobs, to Turkish delights like honey and nutty sweet baklava. Dine on exotic dishes of lamb or chicken curry and drink Turkish beverages from the full service bar. Enjoy the front patio or take in the exquisite murals and dance floors while posing for the notorious photographers. Then, take advantage of a chance to lounge on the bright stools or dance on the terrace at Opa (a Greek celebratory word used for exclaiming joy and appreciation).
Open all day and night, Cazba Restaurant and Opa Lounge in downtown Boise offer the best of both the See and Be Seen worlds. Cazba often features electronic dance music on the weekends. Oh, yes and if you are a VIP at Boise Fashion Week, plan on being here for the VIP after-party on the Sunday night of the event!
If you have ever studied strenuously at college or worked hard at a career, you know that a relaxing break is necessary and welcome. The Gathering Place in downtown Eagle offers just that. First off, as an alumnus of the University of Idaho, I must say it is the best “Vandals” bar around. In addition, this tavern features an amazing sports and brew pub and is the only place in town with pool tables and shuffleboard. The Gathering Place just celebrated its 2nd anniversary and is 1 of 12 watering holes in Eagle with over 50 different choices of beer in the ‘fridge and 19 taps, including local delights from Payette Brewing Co., Slanted Rock from Meridian and Salmon River Brewers from McCall. They have live music every other week with TouchTunes. Golden tee, darts and pinball are available as well as 5 HDTV’s; all surrounded with nostalgic sports memorabilia. When you sit on one of the original soda fountain stools and gaze at all The Gathering Place has to offer, you’ll be reminded that it is inside the 103-year-old historical landmark Orville Jackson’s Drug Store building. So soak up the history and Go Idaho! HomeBrewStuff.com and TheBottleShop are one-stop shops that help us taste and make brews from a multitude of grapes and hops. and service so that valued customers can make their own best possible brews! Located Garden City next to Vapoligy and the Kilted Dragon Brewery, they have a retail shop, warehouse and Tap Room featuring local and northwest craft beers and wines. They offer a wide selection of kits, equipment and ingredients and provide top notch education for free. Not only can patrons make new beers, they can concoct their own liqueurs, sodas and wines. Orders can be placed online or in person. They service the entire U.S. and have daily requests from hobbyists internationally. Come on down, hop to it! I saved my favorite pick, The Getaway, for last. Established in 1999, the family owned and operated bar and grill got its name by providing a place where locals can retreat from their problems. The bar has 2 resident DJ’s playing everything from rock, country to techno; and three 7’ Bronco blue pool tables that bustle with players at all times. Monday and Tuesday nights you can see poker players raising stakes for free pay outs. People ages 21 and up come from all over the valley for beer pong, to jam to acoustic music and to watch football and other sports on 20 HDTV’s. This place has a solid crowd on Wednesdays and the weekends. The G-Way emphasizes that no one should have to spend money on covers ever. And the grill menu is amazing! I highly recommend the beer-battered cheese sticks anytime, cheap wing Wednesdays and the occasional Friday night rib eye special.
The Getaway regularly offers promotional freebies to patrons but on top of that gives away donations of time and money to Disabled Veterans, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and American Cancer Society. They have a co-ed and men’s softball team and participate in the Nampa City Pool League. Oh, that’s not all…one day a year in mid-August, The Getaway makes a big splash with its Summer Beach Bash! Saturday, August 17th from 2-10 PM is the 8th annual celebration where 22 co-ed doubles teams come together to play sand volleyball by the back deck. 1st Place winners get $200 cash and 2nd enjoys a nice time at the bar on the house. Serve it up!
Whether you See and Be Seen drifting from one of these dazzling locales to another or stand out by being a regular at your favourite one. . . I wish you cool times and a safe summer. Don’t forget that one lucky urbanite who visits all these locations and posts on our Facebook page will get a certificate to their See and Be Seen desired destination of choice. See it ... be it... ears ago I heard Dolly Parton talking about her successful weight loss. She said, “After my thirties. I just turned into a real porker. I finally realized that nobody else was gonna lose this weight for me. If I was gonna lose it, I needed to make some real changes – so I did.”
Having responsibility is the duty or obligation to act. Taking responsibility is acknowledging and accepting the choices you have made, the actions you have taken, and the results they have led to. (EmotionalCompetency.com). The first step we cover in our “David Mentality in a Goliath World” GIANTSlayer Coaching program is: “I Get To!”® take 100% responsibility for my life.” Although this statement may seem ridiculously obvious, it’s not always. Why not? People offer various reasons. 1) “I didn’t know. Nobody ever told me.” Imagine growing up in a home with only warped mirrors – like carnival fun house mirrors. Even though everything was completely distorted, you wouldn’t know it because you saw that as true, real, and accurate. That would be your normal. If someone grows up in an irresponsible (e.g. warped) environment, never taught what’s right and had no responsible rolemodels, they simply repeat what they learned as ‘normal’. 2) “I know what I should do, but I don’t want to do it – I don’t really care.” This is a main reason people shirk responsibility because they simply don’t want to do what they know is the right thing. They either don’t believe they will really suffer consequences or they believe the temporary pleasure outweighs any consequences. {Example: everyone knows it’s a selfish and irresponsible act to drive under any influence or drive with distractions such as texting, etc. Yet, how many people have lost loved ones needlessly from this? Only to later see and hear the heart-break of “I never thought this would happen to me.”} 3) “I know what I should do. I want to, but I don’t know how.” Good for you! Find people who are further down the road than you in whatever area you want to grow in. Then watch, learn, listen and apply! That’s what I did as a young girl. I was incredibly blessed to have wonderful role-models that came into my life the summer before 6th grade. Scott and Rachel Lidbeck not only cared about me but their faith, lives, marriage and relationships were examples of what my heart yearned for. I watched how they lived and asked thousands of questions whenever I was with them – which was as often as possible.
people, events and circumstances to blame for misfortunes, failures, setbacks and why they’re not where they want to be in life. I’ve not only heard them all, I used to use some of them myself: Bad advice, misunderstanding, abuse, and dysfunction. I had a client declare “But crazy people raised me!” Although you didn’t choose to be a victim, you choose to stay one. That said, I am the first to offer empathy, sympathy and a shoulder to cry on, when it’s time to unpack and process the “junk in the trunk” of life. {e.g. just ask my very patient husband.} We must go through a healthy reflection and process and then say, “Ok what now?” What will I do now to make the rest of my life, the best of my life? Those who don’t choose wisely, end up being shackled and enslaved to co-dependent relationships, hurts, habits and hang-ups. “Be miserable. Or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it’s always your choice.” - Wayne Dyer The best news is your power to choose! Today, you have 100% of your life left. s the current workforce getting lazier? I don’t see it in my company because my crew works their tails off, but I hear from employer after employer about decline in the work ethic, and the quality of the average worker, that is--if they even show up. So what can we do about turning our workforce into a responsible hard working community. We can start with our children.
I grew up with chores as early as the age of five. I remember at the age of thirteen working in a wood shop--splitting firewood and bucking hay for $3.00 per hour My boss treated me like a man, not a kid. Written by Brandon Wright He had high expectations for me and I didn’t want to let him down. I took pride in what I did and if it wasn’t fast enough then I wouldn’t be asked to come back the next day. It wasn’t about the money, it was about having a job that I took pride in. In my business, UltraClean we clean water damage in businesses and homes. What we do isn’t pretty and sometimes doesn’t smell great but I can always find something for my kids to do. Starting at the age of eight my kids have been working in the business using hammers, chisels, crowbars and other tools as their experiences grow. They get to tear walls out, demolish buildings, and suck up water--which they all love. I remember one weekend instead of working by myself and missing family time I used the new job we were working on--to teach my kids a valuable work lesson. We had insulation to replace in a crawlspace, water to extract, and plastic vapor barriers to remove. My children were told to bag all the insulation, crawl to the access, and take it outside. They moved just as fast as I could and never quit. They did a great job, and I was proud of them. I then told them the value in what they just did and made them feel really proud of their performance. This is what hard labor taught my children and what it can teach everyone on our community. Work ethic, if you work hard you will be respected, if you don’t your coworkers will ask for you to be replaced. Pride, be proud of what you do. Start with a task, finish it, and be happy that you did a great job. Responsibility, show up early, leave when things are done, and do what you say you're going to do. Teaching these three behaviors will help develop your young children into hardworking, young adults. If we teach our kids this when they are young then we will have responsible adults that will grow up and provide for their spouses, children, and contribute to their community. Employers are looking for work ethic, pride, and responsibility in their employees. Teach your children these principles so they will teach their children and in your family--success will be the only option.

Something
Was it I Said?
Patti Saunders Mays, Author
We know how to Network!
Hello again, UL readers! I’m so happy another issue is out already! Every time I open a UL magazine I learn something new about our incredible Treasure Valley, its people, and all this area has to offer.
And speaking of wonderful people, thanks to all of you - my little eBook “Was It Something I Said?” is continuing to grow in popularity and impact lives! I keep hearing from readers all over the country how this book has helped them gain a different perspective and overcome some bad social habits they didn’t even know they had. Hooray! That’s what the book all about. Now. I have a very personal question for you: Have you ever had anyone tell you that you’re boring, or you talk too much, or you’re full of yourself? How about that you have annoying personal habits, or that things you do or say are offensive? The answer is most likely an emphatic “NO!” And yet – do you know anyone who has these annoying traits? Most likely, that answer is an emphatic “YES!” Have you ever told someone that they come across poorly and you dislike talking with them? That’s extremely unlikely. Why is that? Because in our society we are conditioned from birth to “be nice” and “act interested” even if we’re bored stiff. This means that even if we’re obnoxious, the person on the receiving end will make us think we are fascinating! They’ll smile, nod, say things like “That’s terrific!” when the real truth is they can’t wait to get away. This ironic quirk is because of what I call the “courtesy gene” in our society, where people (including ourselves) never know the true story of how they’re coming across. My book, which I’m calling a “no-holes-barred, tell-it-like-it-is self-improvement book that pulls no punches,” describes various common social interactions and details exactly how we blow it again and again by what we say and do, yet have no idea. You’ll learn all the secrets and better yet how to be more likeable and fun to be around.
RSVP on Facebook
As one reader put it, “This insightful, witty and entertaining social bible should be required reading for life. It’s a two-way mirror that allows us to see ourselves as others see us and then lets us in on the secrets of repairing the blemishes. It’s better than any make-up counter!"
GreAt vAlUe!
“Was it Something I Said?” is loaded with insights and guidelines on all-things social, revealing common social blunders without accusations or ridicule. I challenge you, the reader, in not only how you view others, but in no uncertain terms - how others view you.
Get Yours today
The whole book is written in that tone. It’s interesting and fun to read! It’s even funny in some parts, filled with personal (true) stories from my life that have contributed to my lifelong interest in social interactions and how we continually mess up. Are you making these mistakes? Find out, and improve your life!

MEASURING PERFORMANCE Consultant & Business Coach, Julie Larson
Just as there are instruments on your vehicle's dash board that measure critical performance factors such as speed, oil pressure, temperature, amount of fuel in the tank and engine RPMs; so are there instruments (or gauges) you can and should be utilizing in your business to quantify and measure those key areas that are critical to achieving your company goals and objectives. These Key Performance Indicators, or KPIs as they are commonly referred to, identify potential problems in your business, assess your performance and gauge your ultimate success. A quick, fun video
overview of “The GoNo two businesses are the same – you must define and interpret Giver” can be found at your organizations own unique KPI gauges so that they are specific and measurable. You need to be able to compare these www.burg.com/tgg to benchmarks, either from your own past track record or from For information on The Gothose of your industry peers. There are detailed financial perGiver Sales Training Courses formance statistics available in the Risk Management Associacall 208.602.5129 or email: tion’s Annual Statement Studies (www.rmahq.org). Examples of julielarson@gogivercoach.com some common financial metrics to measure are; debt-to-equity ratio, annual inventory turns, outstanding accounts receivable and aged accounts payable. However, don’t look at the numbers in an isolated bubble; compare them from quarter to quarter and year to year to identify trends that may lead to improving your financial management. Non-financial KPIs are just as important and useful if not more so, depending on your business and industry. For example, manufacturing companies typically monitor rejection rates due to failure so that they can improve quality-control standards. Many retail businesses measure the percentage of returned items and employee turnover, which are key metrics in determining overall customer satisfaction. Marketing-driven companies keep a close eye on return-on-investment (ROI) for their advertising and branding campaigns. All profitable businesses should be tracking their lead generation, conversion rate, number of transactions, average dollar sale and profit margins, in order to leverage their revenue growth. Here are a few simple ideas that may significantly increase your conversion rate: 1.
Be clear on who your ideal customer/client is
2.
Be concise on your value proposition – how does what you have to offer benefit them?
3.
Keep in touch with your contacts on a regular basis
4.
Consider offering a guarantee for your product or service
5.
Develop a Nobel Sales Purpose (NSP) for yourself and your team
It is amazing what can happen to improve a company’s performance when the whole team is included in the process of monthly KPI tracking. Much can be accomplished in moving faster toward your business goals with subtle shifts and adjustments (tune-ups) along the way to your everyday activities.
As a licensed Consultant and certified Business Coach, Julie serves her clients by providing business-building strategies, systems, tools and professional coaching resources. Are you struggling or waiting to catch the wind?

sk yourself a question: What are the “shoulds” in my life right now? For example: I “should” exercise more. I “should” go out to dinner with my friend. I “should” read the book I bought 3 months ago. I “should” get the dishes done every night. I “should” try harder. Or maybe the questions are bigger life questions. I “should” get a new job or find a career I love. I “should” start a family. I “should” go on a date and find that special someone. Think about how often in a day we think about what we “should” do. How does it make you feel when you think about what you “should” be doing. So often, we find the "shoulds" trying to take hold of our free time and our lives. And when we do not accomplish the “shoulds” task list, we think less of ourselves. Degrading who we are in our thoughts and feelings. And we think about how we want it to be different without actually choosing a new destination. We struggle with the things in our lives that we believe should be different. We constantly compare ourselves to others. And we often want to know what is out there waiting for us in the future. But, life just doesn’t work that way. In life, we choose the best we can with the knowledge that we have at that moment. There is no crystal ball to tell us the winning lottery number. So we continue to struggle with the “should have”, shouldn’t have”, “need to” and all the other thoughts that convince us we are less. And we convince ourselves that we are not doing enough, we are not giving enough, we are not enough.

And - wait for it - none of it is true. We are doing enough, giving enough, WE ARE ENOUGH just the way we are now. Maybe if we just slowed down, we would see that we don't need to do more, at least for now. It may be time for us to rejuvenate, refocus, and revive so that later when we are truly called, it will be time to do more.

I once heard a story by my teacher and mentor Michael Neill. Imagine you are in a boat in the middle of the ocean and there is no wind. You could try blowing into the sails and you may move a small amount with a huge effort. Or, you could sit back, enjoy the sun, have a nap, relax, and wait to catch the wind. Which do you think will get you to your destination the fastest with the least amount of effort and stress?

To qualify for such an honor, advisors have to be nominated by their firm, and fit into Barron’s criteria such as the type of accounts managed for clients, the kind of revenue produced and the quality of their practices. Included in the mix is how much that person gets involved in their community. “I was probably about as surprised as anybody else,” says Dodson humbly. His clients, however, might be merely nodding their heads in agreement of the well-deserved award. In the advising business for over fourteen years with

Loyal clients, trusting him with their finances, seek his input on other things, too, like what schools he’d recommend when children reach college age, or what sort of car would be best for them to buy. “Over time, clients just become family,” says Dodson, “What it amounts to is that I basically spend most of my day talking to friends. It’s been enjoyable over the years to see clients be able to meet their needs. That is very gratifying.”

‘Growing Business and Building Community’ Last year when Dodson got his first America’s Top 1000 Financial Advisor’s award, multiple congratulatory cards and letters arrived at his office. This year a sincere Andy Dodson received even more of the same. “Easily double, if not three times as many cards and letters as last year,” Dodson says, “The biggest reward we’ve had is that clients have been very gracious with their praise over this. That people took time out of their busy day to send a card, that’s been really nice.” “We feel very blessed to live in this community, and want to continue to give back,” Dodson says. COLLISION EXPERTS
In case you are involved in a car accident, or if you unexpectedly experience a vehicle breakdown and become stranded, will you be prepared? Do you have an auto body repair and tow truck service on speed dial?

Well, you should! Collision Experts are proud to announce that they now offer 24-hour tow service to the community so that in the unfortunate event when you find yourself needing assistance after an accident or a breakdown, they will be there for you from start to finish. Collision Experts boasts over twenty years of professional experience in collision repair service in the Treasure Valley. With their newly added tow truck services, Collision Experts offers a full spectrum of services for off the street auto body repair. Ron Brutsman began Collision Experts in Garden City from very humble beginnings. When another established auto shop became available for purchase in Caldwell in 2003, he decided to move the business and partner with his current shop manager, David Beach to form a unique collaboration. Centrally located right off of the Nampa-
Caldwell Boulevard, Collision Experts has called Caldwell “home” for nearly a decade. You may be wondering what exactly an auto body shop can do for you. Collision Experts can pick up your damaged car, give you a fair estimate, order all the parts necessary, and help you work with your insurance if needed. They even have licensed appraisers on staff to help their customers make informed financial decisions regarding their damaged car. They are one of the best shops for heavy frame straightening work, as they have installed state of the art frame racks and state that they can pull any wrecked frame and can straighten almost anything. They also use only top-of-theline paint for their customers. David firmly believes that their refinishing and color matching ability is the best in the valley. You will encounter no hidden agendas or miscommunication problems when you deal with Collision Experts. They guarantee that they will give the average consumer a better price and a higher quality of service than their competitors. Their goal is to get their customer’s cars out of the shop within three to five days vs. their competitors who can average two weeks to more than a month for turnaround time. How can they do this? David assigns a dedicated employee to one car from start to finish to ensure that nothing falls through the cracks. They also won’t begin a project until they have all the parts on-hand to prevent needless wait times. David and Ron have implemented efficient systems to ensure accuracy and integrity on every job that they do. David is determined to break the perception that auto repair shops don’t stick to their estimates or keep their word. He takes pride in the fact that Collision Experts are willing to work overtime to ensure that a customer’s vehicle is delivered when promised.

At your service 24-hours a day When David and Ron are not working in the shop, you will find David on his motorcycle and Ron and his wife, Monica, on one of the many rivers in Idaho. Ron is also quite the outdoor enthusiast and he has even kayaked in unusual areas such as Chile. Dave says that Ron has had many adventures and that “Ron is the only person who has been allowed up the Payette River on a Jet Ski with the local jet boat club.” In fact, that particular Jet Ski river escapade has gone viral on YouTube because Ron wore a video camera on his head capturing the whole event. Aside from having fun when they are not working in the shop, David and Ron understand the importance of giving back to their community. They have contributed paint and auto body services for vehicles listed in local high school charity auctions and have been thrown into Multiple Sclerosis Society jail to use the bailout
money to help the MSS. They are active in the Caldwell Chamber of Commerce and value their community just as much as they value their customers. Over forty percent of their business is from return customers and this speaks volumes about their commitment to excellence. The Better Business Bureau has given them a five-star rating, but Dave is not surprised. “We make sure that everyone who leaves here is happy.” As Nancy W. succinctly puts it, “Collision Experts fixed my car in record time. They were honest and friendly. I was totally impressed. I would definitely recommend them to my friends and family.” When you find yourself on the side of the road in need of a tow or if you’re looking for an honest and skilled auto body repair shop, give Collision Experts a call. Meridian
Y
The Heart & Soul of the Treasure Valley
ou’ve been to Meridian countless times, but you might not be aware of the historical significance behind this prospering city’s name. In 1891 the town lied directly in the center of the geographical survey line, known as a Meridian--in this case the Boise-Meridian. Geographically speaking, it’s the center of the Treasure Valley. Meridian has countless treasures and activities that satisfy the needs of most and has something to offer everyone. I consider myself and my family one of the lucky ones that live, work, and play in Meridian. When choosing a place to live you most likely go through a list of things that are important to you which may include: crime rates, education, leadership, employment, and recreation--but one key element when choosing a place to live that many forget is--a city’s emphasis on community. The city of Meridian’s motto sums up their stance towards this guiding element, “Built for business, designed for living.” I was born here and graduated from Meridian High School; the memories thus far are very good ones. I feel very safe at any time--day or night this makes Meridian a great place to raise a family, which I did. Both of my children attended Meridian schools, and I am confident in the level and quality of education they received. The Meridian School District, the largest in the state of Idaho, has developed important community partnerships with Idaho’s universities to develop programs that meet workplace needs and employ graduates. I think it’s crucial that higher education meshes more with high schools, allowing Idaho students great opportunity to remain in Idaho and the Meridian School District is a shining example of this process.

The people I encounter in Meridian are kind, caring, giving, and take pride in the place they call home. This is clearly evident by the amount of involvement in local events that focus on helping, assisting, or strengthening the community. You will almost always get a wave, a smile, or someone opening the door for you. That small town feeling is hard to maintain in a city this size, but yet, it continues. In order for a city to have the feel it does, the leadership has to be that of quality, consistency, and have future planning strategies. I believe the city’s leadership succeeds in all of these elements and is successful in reaching innovative goals. With continued efforts and partnerships from residents to city government, Meridian continues to be a superior place to live, work, and raise a family. Mayor Tammy de Weerd says, “Meridian is uniquely conducive to supporting a broad array of business activities while maintaining the high quality lifestyle and focus on family we so greatly value.”

A leading example of this partnering of community and leadership is the Meridian Chamber of Commerce’s “Cash Mob” program. This program encourages residents to buy products or use services that support local business, affected by the split corridor and ongoing construction projects. I haven’t seen this in any other city, and I think it exemplifies what this city is all about--taking care of its own businesses. Over the last one-hundred and twenty two years Meridian has grown into what I consider the heart and soul of the Treasure Valley. So much in fact, I not only live and play here, it’s also the home of my business. When it comes down to it, Meridian simply has it all--for me at least, it’s helped shape my heart and soul.

is all about Supporting Locally Owned Businesses. In a way, we are a business
focused magazine. But, we can’t be all business, all the time, now can we? Our new section, Urban Heart and
Soul, features local people who make their business-- taking care of others, inspiring others, and healing our world. In our area, we are blessed to have so many different modalities of healthy options to choose from. We are honored to be able to have advertisers who have studied ancient practices and understand our bodies don’t always need a pill, for improvement.
“Do You Think I am Made of Money?” or “Do You Think Money Grows on Trees?” These are the perennial questions explored. This book seeks to explain and demonstrate why literally you are made of money, and money does grow on trees. It is your particular money tree that was planted a long time ago. Money is only a symbol for the energetic qualities that connects you to your own personal ideas about your specific sense of self-worth. The money that you make reflects to you the thoughts held in the core beliefs that are stored in the depths of your being. They determine what you think you deserve relative to your measure of selfvalue judgments over many years, even until this very day. As Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli sang, “Money makes the world go around.” Yet, so many people’s relationship to their resources and money is not personal. Money can still be such a taboo subject, and yet it defines so many aspects of our lives both spiritually and in daily living. The themes, patterns, and paradigms that are contained in myth and story will be used to show that the relationship to
money as a value has hardly changed through cultures and time. It is the attitude and approach to the relationship with money that appears to alter and transform as people’s behavior and their movement toward their sense of richness adjusts to new circumstances. The tales, poetry, and myths used will show and demonstrate the fantasies, anxieties, fears, desires, and wanting as a way for people to find and be in a right relationship with their money, as the symbol of their own wealth, resources, and richness of being. Many readers will enjoy and benefit from the unique insights about the amazing, invisible connections between one’s personal energy and sense of well-being, and the well-being of one’s finances.

Are there
Kinks
in Your Life?
W
e all have energy pulsing through our bodies. You can think of the energy meridians as a system of wires or hoses. It is as important to our health as blood, food and water. Our emotional health plays a huge role in keeping this energy system flowing freely through our bodies. Each experience we've had over our entire life leaves an imprint on our minds, good and bad. If the event is something negative, a trauma or something unpleasant, our body's energy system receives a shock, which then creates a kind of a kink (like a hose) in that system, blocking or reducing the flow of energy. Current brain research shows that when we experience a traumatic or unpleasant event (creating that kink), everything in that instant is downloaded into your subconscious mind and is marked with a trigger, so the memory of it tells you to avoid anything like that in the future. Let's say you were in 3rd grade and your teacher reprimanded you for interrupting her. You feel humiliated, embarrassed and afraid. From then on, every time you are about to ask someone in authority a question, that trigger is re-activated, and you feel those same feelings of humiliation, embarrassment and fear. The creative, problem solving part of your brain shuts down, and your amygdala begins to fire, which puts you in the “fight or flight mode, just like when you were in the 3rd grade. You create beliefs about yourself, (I'm not good enough, I'm not smart, I'm different) and your subconscious mind does everything it can to protect you from a similar experience. It's a vicious cycle we get caught up in without even realizing it, because it is all happening on the subconscious level. Thankfully, there is a way to get out of that cycle and to release those kinks!! How? By learning to tap, with your fingertips, on specific acupuncture points while making specific statements about the issue. This sends vibrations throughout the body's energy system, which unblocks the kink and energy begins flowing again. This counteracts the stress and reprograms the response to it. The result is that the emotion simply dissipates.

The GREAT
T
here are 5 key areas that play into a cascade of decline in the senior population that grows faster and faster unless something happens to slow it or stop and reverse it. When one area is addressed, the cascade slows and the chance to reverse the downward direction can happen.
The first area I am addressing is Mental Stimulation, Socialization and Connection. Every single person watching can directly affect how successful someone can be in remaining independent longer. Just a fifteen-minute conversation with an elderly
family member or neighbor once or twice a week can significantly change their odds of remaining independent.
This is because they then feel connected, have a sense of value and they have something to stimulate their mind. This helps to sharpen their thinking processes. They are then able to make better and safer decisions for themselves. If you don't know your senior neighbor, make a point to introduce yourself when you see them out getting their mail, or sitting on their porch, or working in their yard this spring or summer. What you'll find is that not only will it make their week a little
better and brighter, but pretty soon you'll be seeking out their company and their wisdom because of what it offers you. It becomes a mutually beneficial situation. It's my belief that as we start to embrace and access the treasure we have in our seniors right in our own neighborhood, our country will become healthier for it.
Every single person can:

Grandpa had iT right after all!
S
ummer is now upon us and with that comes the familiar sight of your grandfather with his wide brimmed hat, Bermuda shorts with black socks pulled up to his knees and long sleeved shirt. Although some may laugh, in his attempts to be a fashion trendsetter, he has pioneered the way to avoiding one of the most common cancers that afflict us: Skin Cancer.
What is Skin Cancer? Cancer develops when the DNA of cells becomes damaged. This is most commonly caused by UV rays. These damaged cells are unable to repair their damage and begin to divide uncontrollably. Fortunately skin cancer usually develops in the outermost layer of the skin making the tumor clearly visible. This makes skin cancer detectable and usually curable at its earliest stages. There are 3 main types of skin cancer, Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Melanoma. Basal and Squamous cell carcinomas are both tend to be locally invasive tumors that often present as pearly nodules, unhealing sores or ulcerations. Fortunately most Basal Cell or Squamous Cell cancers are curative with removal. Melanoma however is much more serious causing approximately 8,000 deaths a year. Skin cancers typically present as new or changing moles. If caught early they can usually be prevented from spreading Sun exposure is a major risk factor for all skin cancers especially melanoma, so avoidance is key.
How do I check for it? The most important thing you can do is be aware of your skin. You need to do regular self-examinations looking for any new or changing moles or spots on your body. Skin cancer can arise anywhere, not just in sun exposed areas. You want to look for sores that never heal, translucent growths with rolled edges, brown or black streaks underneath a nail, slow growing shiny pink or red lesions, a waxy-feeling scar, or flat or depressed lesions that feel hard to the touch.
How do I prevent it? With skin cancer, avoiding sun exposure is key. There is no such thing as safe tan. Regardless of what advertisements may say, tanning beds are not safe. Be sure to use sunscreen of at least SPF 15 and one that blocks both UV A and B rays. You need to apply generously and often, especially while exercising or swimming. Despite using sunscreen you should still avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during peak hours. Sunscreen can help protect you but some studies have suggested that using sunscreen gives a false sense of security and leads to prolonged sun exposure. Covering up is the best protection. Unfortunately most of the damage done to our skin occurs while we are young. By the time that we get to the point where we don’t care if we walk around in black socks and Bermuda shorts, most of the damage is done. So do yourself a favor. Take your grandpa out to lunch, put on that hat and wear your socks and shorts proudly. Your skin will thank you for it.

You need to pay special attention to moles following the ABCDE’s of Melanoma detection. asymmetry- Does one half of a mole look different from the other?
border Irregularity- Is the edge of the mole ragged, notched or blurred?
color- Does the mole have variety of hues and colors within the same lesion?
diameter- Size greater than a pencil
eraser are at more risk. If you notice a mole different than others or is changing no matter what the size it needs to be examined
elevation-Lesions with irregular areas of elevation can be more concerning If you find a suspicious lesion see your doctor.

Rejuvenate Your Heart without Traditional Medicine
Non-Invasive Heart & Vascular Screening
L
et me introduce myself. My name is Wayne Faw. I lost how I was making a living with the stroke of a pen and a call to the FAA. I was a contract pilot and I had my childhood dream. It was stripped away from me in a FLASH! My livelihood was gone with the decision of a medical professional. This doctor didn't discuss the matter with me. He told me what he had done and sent me on my way, without a second thought. What was I to do? I was upside down on my house, my finances where not good. Overall this was the bottom of the bottom. I had nowhere to turn. Thankfully I have a supportive and loving wife.
area. This is how I decided to become an educated consumer and take control of my own health. I now work with doctors who educate people to help change lives. This approach allows patients power and control over their own healthcare decisions. During an appointment in 2009, Dr. Trites stated, “We are going to put you on a Nobel Prize Medical protocol. First, I am going to test you with the latest technology; an FDA approved Cardio Pulse-Wave Class II Medical Device.” The results stated my heart health and vascular health was similar to a 60-yearold man. That’s not too bad for a 54-year-old man with cardiovascular disease. After following the protocol and not changing my lifestyle, diet, or exercise, I was retested six months later. I tested out to have the heart and veins of a 30-year-old man. Yahoo! I am younger inside and feeling great! That was 3 1/2 years ago. I retested again in December of 2012 and I am still as a 30-yearold, in my heart and veins and feeling better than ever and healthier than I was 20 years ago!
What is the Age of Your Heart? FIND OUT TODAY
Due to that situation, I had to leave my family for a year and go two states over to find employment. Fortunately, I found jobs that brought out my abilities in sales and marketing. During this process I was making changes to my lifestyle and within 1 year had my pilot’s license reinstated. I did this by finding a holistic approach to health. This was amazing to me and others; I did it without the use of traditional medicine! This was more significant than having my pilot’s license revoked. Training TIMES Ten {Personal Coaches Work!}
Last issue, we spotlighted two fitness trainers, Perren Baker and Brandon Jenkins, and three clients who’d seen remarkable progress under their care. Now we want to show you the ‘why’ behind the successful trainers’ motivation.
Brandon Jenkins | BOrn Again fitness http://bornagainfitness.com
Brandon Jenkins
knows what extra pounds really are: they’re once-needed protection that say ‘don’t look at me’, keeping that person unnoticed. There are varying reasons a person would want that. Brandon, once overweight, understands. “I’m very out there. Some question why I share, and I say why not? It’s not my shame. By telling my story, I make it safe for people to tell theirs.” Brandon is a survivor of physical and sexual abuse, which is where his eating problems began. Approximately one in four people share similar stories of why they overindulge in food. It’s the reason Brandon feels there needs to be far more to coaching than eating right and exercising. The root cause of the destructive behaviors is all-important. “It affects every area of your life,” Brandon says, who feels God is working through him to help others. A student of psychology, he’s studied recovery in great depth, but realized that for many, it all stems from abuse, and that everything else was simply a symptom. Talking about it neutralizes its hold on people, individuals who worked out for years, but felt some very important key was missing. Once the body-mind-spirit connection is made, addictive impulses transform, instead, into peace. In a way, Brandon has come full circle, working on his own healing as he helps others create new lives, new bodies, and new beginnings. “I’m getting something out of this, too,” he says, “Their healing is my healing. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
Perren Baker | Fitness for Champions

Perren Baker is one who has been extremely fortunate to prioritize and experience excellent health. He’s always been active, competitive, and involved. Knowing he’s one of the few who can say that, he shows his gratitude by paying it forward. How? By working hard at coaching others toward better health and fitness. Retired from an entirely different career, Perren says, “I do this because I’m passionate about it, not because I need the income. I truly care about people.” He got off to the right start, with parents who were big on nutrition. It’s almost as if he was born to do what he’s doing now. “It’s my true calling,” he says, explaining that he’s applied what he’s learned over the course of his entire life training, competing, and coaching in very demanding athletics. In his former career as a wildlife biologist, he spent years observing how wildlife survived, based on their nutrition and body condition. He uses this combined knowledge in what he’s doing these days, with his understanding of what makes the human body tick. When clients describe Perren, the word ‘encouraging’ is often used. Perren, growing up in a competitive sports world, had parents who supported him. He’s lived by the motto that, if you give your very best to whatever you are doing, then nothing else matters. That is being a true champion in life. “I use the same concept when I’m trying to inspire people to be their best,” says Perren, “It’s not what you did wrong that matters, it’s what you did right. You learn from each experience and work on the future.” Summer Issue 2013
