Alex was given her first book of comic strips at the age of six. Alex never fell out of love with cartoons–it was only when the hundreds of comics stored in her parents’ attic in a thatched cottage in Dorset, England, were deemed to be a fire risk that she had to get rid of them. The first strips Alex drew on a regular basis were for her university newspaper, about a character who was half man, half mosquito. Mosquito Man didn’t last the course and was replaced by a couple of other equally short-lived strips. After Alex graduated the University of Kent at Canterbury with a degree in biochemistry, she moved to the United States. She created her next strip while she was working as a waitress in a New Jersey bar. Her strip was called Polar Circle then, but it still had most of the same characters that you see today in Arctic Circle, including the polar bear, arctic tern, snow bunny and three immigrant penguins. In 2005 the Australian Regional Press began running Arctic Circle. By then, Lenny the lemming had completed the main cast. Shortly after, Alex’s strip was spotted by King Features and they decided to take Arctic Circle on for worldwide syndication. Alex has spent the last four years living in New Zealand. When she’s not toiling away at the drawing board, Alex likes to run off on a sunny day and go surfing or biking or tramping (Kiwi-style walking), and taking in the spectacular New Zealand scenery.
