Message Board From Dr Margaret Wilson, Headteacher It has been a very busy and successful half term. The school has been awarded the Level 1 Rights Respecting School Award and I would like to thank all our stakeholders for their work which led to this success. As always, the school show was a fitting showcase for our students’ talents and I would like to thank them and all the staff involved for the wonderful entertainment they provided. Who needs the West End? We anticipate a rise in the number of 6th Form applications once the raising participation age takes effect in 2014. However, in order to accommodate additional students in Key Stage 5 the school needs to extend its current facilities and planning permission is being sought from Castle Point Council with our application due to be heard on 8 January 2013. This development is critical to the school and crucial for the future education of our students. I would ask parents to support the school’s plans by contacting their local councillor or emailing the planning department on planning@castlepoint.gov.uk. I hope you will enjoy reading about the many events that have taken place including our first ever prom show and the launch of our radio station, which broadcasts from 10am to 1pm every Tuesday on 97.8 Gateway. Finally, I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Family Learning Week 2012 Family Learning week provides the opportunity for families to learn together. The King John School hosted a wide variety of activities for families to take part in. National Family Learning Week is an annual awareness campaign promoting family learning events across the country. The week was a great success and there were over 30 events on offer and 393 people attended . We had very positive feedback from parents and students. They not only enjoyed the activities but liked coming into school and learning as a family. The week also allowed parents to have more contact with teachers and the school learning environment. The week is an annual event so we look forward to seeing you all next year! Feedback from students ‘My name is Charlie Merritt and I went to the Family fun with food. I went with my mum and we had a great time. We learnt how to make home made healthy pizzas in the new catering room which was really cool as it was like being a chef. We then sat down as family and ate our food and talked about what we learnt. I made the pizzas at home for my family and they loved them’. ‘My name is Alyssa Cooper. I am in year 7 and I went to the family fun with beauty,it was really great. I went with my mum and we learnt how to give a manicure. It was really interesting and I loved being in the salon’.

Student Safety The School is very concerned about the safety of the students on our site. With this in mind we would ask that cars DO NOT DRIVE ONTO THE SCHOOL SITE to drop students off or pick them up. This includes the car park at the Benfleet Road entrance. In future the gate to the Benfleet Road car park will be shut between 3.00pm and 3.45pm. This car park is intended for staff and visitor parking only. A large number of students have to cross this area to get into school and the presence of cars driving through the car park greatly increases the risk to students. Please take notice of the signs on the gateway and drop your children off outside the school site. A small walk up the road can only be good for them!!! Katrina Bentley, Bursar

Year 11 Christmas Update This term has gone incredibly quickly, some students have been busy studying new AS subjects, giving them a greater insight into the level of study necessary in post-16 education. Other students have picked up new GCSEs that they will study over the course of the year. All the Year 11 students are continuing to work towards their core subjects (English, Maths and Science) and are preparing for exams in these subjects. However, there is more going on around the year group. There is a considerable ‘buzz’ building about the leaver’s day celebrations and the Prom. We have committees in the year group working hard to ensure this year’s celebrations are the very best they can be. The recent ‘Prom Fashion Show’, organised by the Prom committee (with a lot of help from Mrs Copeland and Mrs Merry) was a grand success, raising almost £800 towards the Prom fund. Additionally, the Yearbook team are busy behind the scenes. They are pulling together some great photos and information for the 2013 Yearbook and beginning to design some of the pages. They do desperately need more photos for the collages. So, Year 11, remember to send your images to kingjohnyearbook2013@gmail.com. They can be pictures from inside or outside of school, school trips, plays, and any other memorable moments! The ‘Passport to the Prom’ rewards system has been a great success within the year group this year. Students collect points from their teachers to reward hard work, enthusiasm and success. Students across the year group with the highest number of points have an opportunity to win their Prom ticket. Keep an eye out for the new Prom posters around the school, starring Prom cover girl and Deputy Head Girl, Charlotte Crudgington. Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity Christmas and Happy New Year!

to wish you all a Merry

Improving Literacy at The King John School The King John School is committed to raising the standard of literacy for all students. To this end, we will now be dedicating some time in morning tutor sessions to literacy; to support this work we are asking that all students bring a reading book with them every day. These books should be suitable for your child’s age and ability. If you would like guidance on how best to support your child to select the appropriate reading materials, please visit the Learning Resource Centre (The LRC is open each morning, break time, lunch time and after school for students to borrow books.) Students can read fictional books but we would encourage GCSE English students to read non-fiction texts such as: biographies, autobiographies, travel writing, diaries or broadsheet newspapers such as The Times, The Independent, The Guardian or The Telegraph. Magazines, tabloid newspapers and comics are not suitable for tutor time. Kindles (or similar devices) will not be allowed as a substitute for a reading book as many models now have internet access and games. Thank you in advance for your support with these activities. Mrs Goodwin

Whole-school Literacy Coordinator

How else can students improve their Literacy Skills? The Literacy Area on the VLE has links to websites that students can use to develop their literacy skills. Exams in most subjects now include marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar and students must ensure they are developing these skills across the curriculum. Learning Resource Centre

As always, Mrs Davis and Mrs Sones are happy to help in the mornings.

We have nearly 14,000 books for students to use in the LRC, as well as a network of computer work stations. During term time we have newspapers delivered daily for students to read along with several magazines. The LRC is a quiet place for students to complete homework or just as a nice place to read. It is open from 8am until 5pm as well as at break and lunchtime. Our dedicated staff are always happy to assist students in locating a book for research or just to talk about which book to read next. As well as the guide for selecting reading materials, the LRC Area on the VLE also includes further information about the facilities offered and this online area will be developed to include book reviews by students. Literacy Leaders

Miss Babb is our new Learning Zone Coordinator and she is available from 1pm every day.

We now have over 100 Literacy Leaders in the school. These students from Years 9-13 are helping to develop literacy resources and deliver sessions to younger year groups. Thank you to all those students who are dedicating their time to improving literacy across the school.

Creative & Performing Arts Jack Petchy Subsidised trip to Paintballing with 11-01

On Saturday 29th September I went paintballing with my tutor group 11-01 a great time was had by all. We had a very exhausting but interesting day! We enjoyed shooting each other with the paintballs? …. and competed with each other to win the various different games. It was a truly brilliant day and we all had lots of bruises to show for it. This was a great way to celebrate the last five years we have spent together and we would all like to thank Daniel Abiona for donating the money and suggesting the visit. Thank you to you all. Ms Grennan

Congratulations to Nancy Vasey Reed who came 3rd in her class at the Southend Music Festival! Well done Nancy!

It has been an extremely busy term for the Music Department! Firstly, we have had two BTEC Music Shows, the first was the Year 12 show where they put on a fantastic performance to family & friends, it was their first opportunity to perform together and they did a great job. The Year 13 BTEC and Performing Arts show took place at The Hollywood Restaurant. They had the task of organising the whole show from venue hire to technical equipment used and they put on a wonderful show, the night’s theming was very glamourous where guests pulled up to a red carpet and were then treated to a music event worthy of a bigger stage! On top of this several of the BTEC Music and Performing Arts students were invited to perform at an awards ceremony at The County Court in Chelmsford where guests gave many compliments. Performing Arts students put on a lunchtime recital to perform current musical and popular hits which they were being graded on. They did really well and it was great practice for their performance to a Junior school next year!

Essex County Council Visit—Year 10 On Thursday 18th October Mr Patton, leader of Student Voice, along with 11 members of Student Voice went to Chelmsford to meet with the Chairman of Essex County Council, Kay Twitchen and various councillors from Essex County Council. We also had a chance to meet representatives of the Young Essex Assembly and to find out what their position in the Young Essex Assembly means. The day included a signing in, a welcome from Essex County Council and the Young Essex Assembly, a democracy activity, a networking lunch, question time and an evaluation of the entire day. The day began when we entered the Council Chamber and sat in the places where the Councillors of Essex County Council and the Young Essex Assembly would sit during session. The Chamber was decorated with amazing and carefully detailed artwork of English history. It was fantastic. Chairman Kay Twitchen introduced us to the Council Chamber and gave us a brief understanding of what her role as Chairman entails. She told us how the Council Chamber works and told us how politics on a local scale operates. After that, the Young Essex Assembly told us how democracy is achieved and how the Young Essex Assembly is conducted. The Young Essex Assembly gives the younger generation a voice in Essex County Council and gives us the chance to voice a stronger opinion on the problems teenagers and young adults face and to discuss ways to resolve or reduce them. There was a short quiz on democracy before we moved on to the activity. The activity was based on the idea of living in Livestock Improvement Corporation’s where there is not a fair democracy to resolve certain drastic issues. The objective of the game was, acting in school teams which consisted of other schools in Essex such as FitzWimarc, Mark Hall and several other schools’; to act as a family in a LIC working to make designer trainers to survive. It was a hard game. Although it was quick and everything that happened was accelerated, the concept was the same as it would be in life. In the end our team was in debt and several family members died of starvation. The point of the exercise was to understand that where there are no fair democracies the standard of living is compromised and survival for the weak and vulnerable is that much harder. After that there was a short debate on the concept of the game and what we gained from it. There was then a networking lunch where we had the opportunity to speak to the County Council members and to talk about how we could improve the social community. We also had a chance to hold the Olympic torch which was carried through Hadleigh in the torch relay. We returned to the Council Chamber and had a question time, where we could ask questions of County Council members on the panel. We met councillors such as Ray Gooding, Children Services; John Jowers, Communities and Planning; and Colin Riley one of our local Councillors from Castle Point. They told us their plans for education in 2013, which is to put money into helping special needs education and they also told us how as a school community we can help with the development of education. Finally we said our farewells to the panel. We had a final evaluation with the Young Essex Assembly about what we had gained from the experience. I am glad to have taken part in such an interesting and entertaining day and would be happy to participate in such endeavours in the future. By Ross Whitaker 10-09

Congratulations to Christian Gray 10-06 who won the Castle Point and Rochford Cross Country race, 22nd November. Christian is a fantastic cross country runner. This is something that didn't come naturally to him in year 7 and he has worked exceptionally hard for this success. Christian attends extra curricular practices every Tuesday and Thursday morning before school. He has attended EVERY practice so far this year (on a Tuesday coming straight from Runnymede swimming pool where he trains for swimming from 6am!!). He ran an excellent tactical race keeping his opponents in sight for most of the race before making his move in the last quarter and winning the race by a considerable margin. The picture shows Christian winning the senior race with Ross Johnson 11-06 in second place. The Senior Boys were the second team home in a very competitive race.

Trenches history trip On the 13th October we, along with lots of other Year 8 students, went to Belgium on an educational trip to see the cemeteries that people from the war were buried in, and the trenches that they would have fought in. We got to school around 5:15 am and left around 5:30am We had a long journey getting there but it was fine as we had our friends with us. We eventually got there and the first place we went to was amazing. It was called the Menin Gate. It had around 50,000 names of soldiers who had died in the war, but whose bodies were never found. We were all walking round to see if we could find our own surnames. Next, we were allowed to have a look round town, where there was a lovely Belgian chocolate shop, who had very kindly put a sign saying ‘Welcome The King John School’ and had also put special deals on just for us! Once we had finished looking around we got back on our coach and went to a museum where we saw different uniforms the soldiers wore, different resources they had and we also got to have a look at what it would have been like in the places they slept. Once we finished walking around, and got what we wanted from the gift shop, we met our tour guide who would be with us for the next few hours. He took us to a few cemeteries, sharing a few stories of some of the soldiers; we also laid a wreath and read war poems in memory of them. The final place we went was our favourite place, the trenches. It was amazing to see what they spent a long time living in to save their people back home. Our tour guide was telling us about the cramped conditions they survived in, and how they stayed alive. And we got to see for ourselves the size of it. Overall it was a great day! Dear Parents/Carers, I am delighted to introduce our brand new PAUSE posters for January 2013. Since its launch in 2010 the PAUSE scheme has been at the centre of our school ethos and underpins the core values that as a school we strive to instill in all of our pupils.

Our aim is to not only give students the opportunity to fulfill their academic potential but to also leave King John as well rounded individuals who are able to make a positive contribution to society. Each week there is a ‘focus’ on one particular aspect of PAUSE. This is delivered and reinforced through tutor time activities and our ‘Thoughts for the Week’ programme; in assemblies; during lessons and in the corridors and playgrounds at break and lunchtimes.

By focusing on the basics and reinforcing our core values on a regular basis we are confident that with your support we can ensure that our youngsters will have the right personal qualities so that together we can indeed ‘Turn good students into amazing people’. Mr. S. Watts

Examinations Office The King John School Examination Office now puts all important examination information on the school website. PE Department Congratulations to David Abiona of V14 has finished the athletics season ranked 8th in the country for Triple Jump. A fantastic achievement for David who has only taken up athletics seriously this season. The King John Girls have again won the district cross country championships. They had a fantastic time. The Year 7 girls won their race; The Year 8 and 9 combined girls won their race; and, The senior girls came second in their race. The boys enjoyed an excellent morning coming second in all three of their races. This was definitely the best cross country team the school have put out in the last few years and overall we came second behind FitzWimarc. Special mention to Christian Gray, 10-06 who won the senior race running against older boys!! (Ross Johnson was a close second). Congratulations to the Under 19, 16 and 14 netball teams, they are through to the next round of the Essex Cup. We wish them good luck in the next round.

Castlepoint & Rochford Sports Award

Cross Country Training A big well done to all the girls that came in during half term for extra cross country training! Especially Amy and Claudia who came in on their birthday! Poppy Douglas, Katie Bazela, Emily Warren, Abbie Walters, Rebecca Findlay, Sarah Carter, Emily George, Abbey Rex, Georgia Ward, Yasmin Robinson, Hannah Mickleburgh-Gardham, Charlotte George, Lauren Paul, Genevieve Pate, Katie Rawlings, Amy Rawlings, Claudia Carroll, Antonia Tidy-Jones Mrs Cann.

Rebecca Griffin 9-09 and Kiera Tippett 9-06 were shortlisted for the Castlepoint & Rochford Sports Award back in October. Rebecca won the ‘Castlepoint Disability Sports Personality of the Year’ She received a beautiful glass trophy, a perpetual trophy, a framed certificate and £100 (as well as tickets each to see a Southend United game!) Rebecca competes for Rayleigh Town Archery club, training twice a week and competing every weekend. Since September she has won the County Championships and the Southern Counties. Rebecca has also represented Essex in an Inter Counties match where she came 1st. Kiera won the ‘Castlepoint Young Sports Personality of the Year’. She was also presented with a beautiful glass trophy, a perpetual trophy, a framed certificate and £100 (as well as tickets each to see a Southend United game!) Kiera impressed the committee so much that she was put into the ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ category and was awarded the ‘Distinction Award’ and awarded a certificate for this too. Kiera is a multi talented young sportsperson! She travelled to Dubai at the beginning of November to compete in the World Biathle Championship (run, swim, run) , she came 7th in the world. She was also selected to represent the Eastern Region in the Mountain Bike and Cycle Cross International Regional championship, having the opportunity to ride on the Olympic course.

National Schools Cross Country – Regional Final

Both girls work really hard and are a credit to the school Over 500 schools nationally enter this competition so to have 3 teams through to the Regional Final is a huge achievement. The North Thames area (London, Hertfordshire, Middlesex and Essex) is one of the strongest around. The junior girls team Years 7 & 8) finished 9th overall but with 5 out of the 7 in the team from Year 7 this is a fantastic achievement and puts them in strong contention for next year. The Junior boys all had the race of their lives to finish 5 th overall beating local rivals Fitzwimarc (by 50 points) Greensward and King Edmund. Lukas Volk was the top finisher with a brilliant 10th position. The Inter girls (Years 9 &10) missed out on the National final by just 10 points!! They finished in an agonising 4th place but again the team was predominantly from Year 9 so should be successful next year. All of the runners have trained so hard, coming in for early morning sessions and giving up their time during the holidays and Saturday mornings and this has culminated in our most successful schools cup EVER!!!! Junior girls – Niamh Smith, Poppy Douglas, Charlotte George, Sarah Carter, Lauren Paul, Abbey Rex, Katy Fenner Junior boys – Lukas Volk, Rhys Connors, Bryce O’dea, Azar Aitmarri, Bailey Millen, Isaac Clifton, Danny Warrens Inter Girls – Kiera Tippett, Antonia Tidy jones, Emily Warren, Abbi May Walters, Briony Findlay, Katie Bazela

MFL The Languages Department has continued to grow this term with students in year 12 being able to study Latin or Italian GCSE from scratch using their French and Spanish knowledge to help them speed through a brand new GCSE.

As part of the British Film Institute’s promotion, A level Spanish students at the KJS were given a free viewing of Habla Con Ella, a Spanish film by the renowned director Almodavar. As year 13 student Kelly Wilson says: “It was a tragic film which depicted events that occur in reality.. I feel that the intention was not to shock but to emphasise that one cannot hide from realism, it must be acknowledged and understood. Viewing this film benefitted me as the language used and high level issues discussed gave me more vocabulary and enhanced my understanding of Spanish grammar.”

Mandarin has also started and is currently offered to Year 12 students as part of their enrichment program and Mrs Carter is running a Mandarin Club for keen linguists on Thursday lunchtime.

Student successes! Congratulations to the following students for being nominated by their peers or teachers as the student of the month in their class and year.

Need extra help with your French or Spanish homework? Want to practice some speaking? Just want to check something quickly?
