Joe Harris In just two short years Joe Harris has gone from a starting level of regional competition to national recognition and is on the edge of Great Britain squad selection. Last season his achievements in qualifying from regional to national competition level in just his second year earned him recognition as Brentwood Sports Person of the Year 2012.

Southern Champion 2013 Joe has already continued his success into 2013 After successfully training for the last six months to increase his difficulty from 6.8 to 8.7 he competed at the first national gala competition and led all three routines finally beating his nearest competitor by a huge 4.5 marks. Already he has achieved his goal of qualifying for the National Championships and scored highly enough to qualify for the next grade which will give him access to the National Squad. A fantastic result from a lot of hard work in training.

Fair Havens Fun Run The week of 17tJune, saw students from across Years 7, 8, & 9, taking to the school field for a sponsored Fun Run in aid of Fair Havens Hospice. Students had to complete three laps of the school field and collect as much sponsorship money as they possibly could. The students had a great time and really enjoyed the event, with some even wearing fancy dress! Prizes were awarded in assembly to those runners coming in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each Year group. A special prize was also awarded to the highest Fund-Raiser. Miss Gibson ran the Run Fun event, in memory of her late father who was cared for by Fair Havens Hospice in Westcliff -On-Sea. He unfortunately lost his battle with cancer in February 2013, and Miss Gibson has been overwhelmed by the support of the students and the amount of money they have raised. “Some students said to me that they enjoyed the Fun Run but were worried they had not raised enough money. I stressed to all students that it is the taking part that counts. Every single penny raised would go towards the support of terminally ill people coming to the end of their lives at Fair Havens”. Students raised well over £1,500 which is testament to the kind, generous students and family members that we have at The King John School. A big well done to everyone who took part, and also to the staff that supported the event. The money raised really will make a difference to people. Miss Gibson

Message Board From Dr Margaret Wilson, Headteacher Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to those parents that attended the consultation meeting on 27 June. Whether the Deanes School remains open or closes is a decision for the Local Authority; The King John School has no jurisdiction or influence over the final decision. It is very disappointing that as a result of our popularity The King John School has received such negative press. We know from the number of people that attended the consultation meeting that you are concerned about any impact this could have on your child’s education. It was very useful for us to have an opportunity to listen to the views of our own parents and the Governing Body will take these into account should any decisions have to be made in the future. The King John School was a foundation school, as Deanes School is, before becoming an academy and as such the Governing Body were, and remain, responsible for the school’s financial management as well as student progress. We too were disadvantaged when the Building Schools for the Future programme was withdrawn, but we could not wait for improvements to be made. Since then the Governing Body has worked hard at generating income and this, together with prudent housekeeping, means that work on the new £3.5m 6th Form extension, for which planning permission has been granted, will start this September. The build will also include remodelling of all the school car parks with a significant increase in parking spaces. This new build will be funded entirely from the school’s reserves; the build is not reliant or dependent on any funding from the Local Authority. Next I would like to thank parents for your responses to our recent survey. It certainly highlighted what we are doing well and what you would like us to improve. We will take your comments on board and will share our plans for improvement with you at a later date. The girls’ athletics team has just come 3rd in the country in the National Athletics Championship held at Gateshead. They beat a number of public schools including Brentwood. We are so proud of them. Well done!

The King John School Sixth Form Building Extension

Congratulations too to Jess Judd who has just completed her A levels. Jess came first in the 800m in the European Cup and the following week also came first in under 2 minutes to qualify for the World Championship. Despite this busy schedule Jess still found time to inspire our students as Guest of Honour at the Year 8 Presentation Evening.

Message Board The fantastic support of our parents was greatly appreciated at the very first Year 11 Graduation Ceremony at Cliffs Pavilion. Over 1,400 were there to celebrate our students’ success. It was a wonderful afternoon and one we hope to repeat in the future. We also held two days of induction for Year 6 students as well as having 210 students join us for the 6 th Form Induction Day. The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme run by the school has gathered momentum since it was introduced and students who have completed the Silver Award have the opportunity to go on to their Gold Award in the 6th Form. We also had a wonderful Year 7 Awards Evening, attended by the Mayor, as well as an outstanding summer show. This year our students, with the support of form tutors and Heads of Year, have to date raised an amazing £11,815 for charities of their choice and we expect the final figure to be even higher. This term has been one of the busiest for the school and its staff. With all these wonderful events going on it makes you wonder where teachers find the time to teach! But teach they do, and we are looking forward to another outstanding set of results this summer. I would like to take this opportunity to say goodbye to Miss Raynor. Miss Raynor has worked at the school as a teacher for 38 years, having joined us as a newly qualified teacher. The contribution that she has made to the school and to the success of its students is immeasurable and she will be sorely missed. We wish her every success in her retirement. I would just mention that the school is now using the website as a major form of communication with parents and I would urge you to check this regularly. Finally, I would like to wish everyone a relaxing break. Goodbye and good luck to those staff that are leaving us. To the rest of you I look forward to seeing you all safely back here in September. Let’s hope the sun keeps shining!

Information Quest - 7-07 swapping facts with each other

Kiera Tippett 9-06 has just competed in the Regional Schools Pentathlon Championships in Lincolnshire on behalf of Essex Schools. It was an extremely windy, cold, long day and the other Counties’ competitors were really strong, but Kiera had some good PBs - even though in the 5 events she took part in, she only trains in 1. She was in 7th place before the last event, the 800m run, which is her best event. She knew she had to have a good time, but with the wind so strong she thought it was impossible. However she gave it her all - and won the race by quite some distance and only just outside her best time. She was gobsmacked though when they read out the results..... she came 3rd overall and qualified for the National Schools’ Championships in Birmingham in September!

Marketing Campaign –7-07 working on their marketing projects in English - good examples of group work!

She was the only one from the Junior Girls team who qualified for the Nationals. She is going to spend the next few months getting some proper training in the other events; shot put, high jump, long jump and hurdles. Lets hope it helps her in the events and we will keep our fingers crossed she does well for Essex Schools.

Languages MFL Happy Summer from the MFL department! May your holidays be full of French and Spanish learnt in your lessons and fun and different experiences. We would like to say farewell and good luck to Mrs Carter who has gone on maternity leave this term and Miss San Miguel who is moving on after training to be a Spanish teacher at the KJS. We would also like to welcome Miss Copping who will be teaching French from September.

What I’ve learnt in Latin During my time studying Latin, I feel I have gained more cultural and general knowledge about Roman history. All of the historic topics we have covered are always interesting, there never seemed to be a dull moment in the reign of the Roman Empire ! In one of the lessons I produced a PowerPoint presentation and researched the life of slaves which gave me a true insight as to how tough life was for people living under the rule of Emperors such as Nero, Caligula etc. I found many shocking facts about how masters treated their slaves, some rich men had as many as 500 slaves to themselves. Due to my previous language studies at GCSE, and currently at A level, it has definitely helped me with grasping Latin grammar, especially verbs. Plus, the origin of many sophisticated English words have come from Latin so it has helped broaden my vocabulary, which is particularly helpful as I am studying English Language at A Level. It’s always very intriguing to see that a lot of our own English words are derived from Latin. Many schools do not teach Latin to their students so having the chance to learn it at King John is exclusive and has been a great opportunity and will be a qualification that I can keep with me for life, it will be particularly useful for applying for Universities. I have thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of this subject, despite it being a ‘dead’ language, it definitely has made a major impact on our language today.

Talking Italian this year has proven to be very useful with my studies as a language student. Having studied Spanish and French previously for GCSE and looking at studying Spanish at University, another language has helped me develop my skills further. Italian has been easier for me this year but also beneficial , helping my fellow classmates is something that helps my learning and others. I’ve shared my skills yet further by supporting the lower school Italian Club for gifted linguists.

Languages The trip to Saint Omer was really good. We visited lots of fun places, like the Aquarium in Boulogne and La Coupole, the underground bunker, where we learnt what life was like in France under German occupation. We were also shown the launching of the V2 rockets. We also visited the Agincourt museum, where we learnt about the 100 year war and were able to try on the armour worn at that time. Luckily the weather was fine and on Saturday we went to a traditional French market in Saint Omer and were able to spend some time going around looking at all the delicious food. We also had to complete certain tasks, such as buying a stamp, drink and a cake, speaking in French. We stayed at the Chateau d’Ebblingham, a converted manor house on the outskirts of Saint Omer. It was surrounded by fields and we played a football match against one of the other schools. Thankfully with the help of Mr Barry and Mr Salkeld, we won both evenings. On the last night, we had a French evening where we made crêpes and were also able to try snails. They were very garlicky. We really enjoyed the trip and hope that it will run next year. Holly Warner, Hayley Cousins and Jessica Souto. Year7 Go to the parents section of the VLE, French trips, St Omer for more photos and accounts.

Congratulations to the 2 teams of year 10 students who competed at the Interschool French Quiz at the Billericay School this term and came home with the winners trophy and first and second place! Congratulations to Sam Campbell, Harvey Coplestone, Sam Fogg, Tomisin Folorunso, Emily George, Harry Goodwin, Nathan Sellamuthu, Bradley Hodder, Rachel Howard, Alex Nightingale, Scott Ralph. Victoria Read, Codey Shirley, Nancy Vasey-Reid, Saffron Webb and Holly Wilkie. They excelled in tests of speed, accuracy, grammar and team work and impressed the host school with their French knowledge. The shield is engraved and year 9 French students have some work to do next year in order to retain the trophy!

International day Ethiopia

On 27th June 2013 we had our first Enrichment Day at the King John School. In Year 7, each tutor group is given a different country to research and do a presentation about. Our tuChina tor group 7-07 had Spain and in the lead up to the day, we spent tutor time researching the country.

On the day, we split up into groups. One group completed the model of Spain, with the help of Ms Bass. Another group practised the paso doblo dance, and others worked on an advertisement for Spain which was filmed. The rest of 7-07 were helped by Mrs Harvey and Miss Morgan, they created an amazing display about Spain, which showed all that we had learnt about the country and its culture. We bought in typically Spanish food, for example, chorizo, manchego cheese, and souvenirs from Spain such as castanets and flamenco dresses. Miss San Miguel helped us with ideas about her country, and Ireland Faye Shillibeer, who has studied Spanish, came in to help us practice our Spanish. After lunch, our displays were set up in the Central Gym and the judges included the mayor and the Chair of Governors. Our tutor group won best display, but Egypt won overall. Here are some photos of the countries that were chosen for by tutor groups. Gemma Purser – 7-07

The field events were first and there were many great performances but the field performance of the day went to Frankie Roast who jumped a massive personal best in the long jump of 4.75m. After the field events the team were in 4th place. On the track the girls were brilliant with so many strong performances. The track performance of the day went to Maddy Bourne who ran 12.6 in the 100m, the fastest time of the day.
