WE ARE OUTSTANDING I hope that all parents have had the opportunity to read the OfSTED report, which has now been published on the school website. The Governing Body, staff and students are delighted with the outstanding rating in our first inspection for 5 years, and our first inspection since we became an academy. The inspection only confirmed what we already know, The King John School provides a quality education. I was particularly pleased with the comments made about our students such as that their ‘behaviour is exemplary’. In meetings with the inspectors our students were erudite and more than willing to give their opinion; this applied to all students regardless of their academic ability, they were wonderful ambassadors for the school. We know that our students work hard and we only want the best possible outcomes. The report said that ‘students are highly supportive of one another’. We agree with this and an example was manifested recently when a collection was suggested for a student that had had his guitar destroyed in an assault; staff and students gave generously. Despite our size, which is often maligned, we are a caring school and we do know our students well. The school was graded outstanding overall and outstanding in the 4 areas inspected; achievement of students; quality of teaching; behaviour and safety of students; and, leadership and management. Since the new OfSTED criteria was introduced it is harder for schools to achieve outstanding. Schools particularly need to show that teachers are able to deliver outstanding lessons so that students make the progress that is expected of them. Our students’ attainment over time at GCSE is consistently well above the national average in almost all subjects, including English and maths and the proportion achieving the top grades at GCSE is rising. Added to that standards are also improving in the school’s Sixth Form with significant improvements seen in results at both AS and A2 this year. Our 2013 Sixth Form results were the best ever and we are confident that this trend will continue and we hope this will encourage our students to choose to continue their further education with us. We could not have achieved as much as we have without the continued support of our parents and we owe you our thanks. Continuing to work together in a home/school partnership will ensure a quality education for every student and mean that together we can ensure the best possible outcomes for your child whatever their ability. Battlefields Trip to Belgium On 5th October 2013 Year 8 students attended a day trip to Belgium and we visited different World War 1 locations. The first place we came across had some stairs leading up to an open space. Engraved on the walls were thousands of surnames and initials of the people who fought in the war. This was the Menin Gate. Then we visited a place which people really enjoyed, the chocolate shop. We were given free samples and a 10% discount! After that we drove to a place where German soldiers who fought in the war were buried; Langemark Cemetery. Our Belgian tour guide explained each historic figure that we came across in lots of detail and was happy to answer any of our questions. Afterwards we drove to another cemetery but this was for the British soldiers; Tyne Cot Cemetery. We placed our poppy wreath in remembrance of the soldiers down beside the other poppies and it had our school’s name on it. Our last stop for the day was visiting a real trench, which was extremely wet and muddy! At the same time it was very interesting because we got a realistic view of the state that the soldiers had to fight and live in during the war. Arizona Snow, 8-07

Year 7 Robyn Read 7-10 Robyn will be taking part in a national qualifying event for the world championships of Irish dancing between Friday 18th and Monday 21st October. Good Luck !! Thea Taylor 7-10 I took part in the Brentwood Open – Trampoline Competition 6th October 2013. Sunday was my first trampoline competition for quite a while. I
because of these walks from the charities and the people who were in charge of the walk. I felt very proud afterwards and in need of a rest. Thomas Hicks 7-01 My personal achievement is when I won my first trophy which happened in the summer holidays. I went to a football camp for a week and on the final day I was picked from 40 other players to win the coaches’ player trophy. Joshua Ashman 7-01 Josh has recently qualified for the National Finals male gymnastic competition. This is a great personal achievement for Josh and well deserved as he has worked really hard for it.
George Barnett 7-01 My name is George and my personal have not competed since January 2012 due to inju- achievement is obtaining my grade 1 ry, so I was very nervous. I have been training music theory in the last year. Lucy Stritten 7-01 An achievement I have been involved in was a 10km walk around Benfleet for charity. It started at St Marys Church and we went in a loop from there. I have done this twice now, once in 2011 when I supported Unicef and once this past year for Havens Hospice for children and adults. It took us about 3.5 hours but I did it without sitting down. Both the walks were in May. In 2011 I raised about £90 but this year I raised £103.20. I have lots of certificates and thank you letters

Year 7 Film Night/Pyjama Party September 2013 I’m going to tell you about the fantastic film night/pyjama party that the year 7’s enjoyed tremendously. It was a really successful social event for all year 7’s and I think they had a great time. We had a fantastic onesie contest and all the onesies were amazing. We raised over £100 for charity by buying the refreshments. At 3:30pm everyone got changed into their onesies and made their way to the theatre. People were all dressed in different onesies and some of the teachers wore onesies as well. The film we watched was Jurassic Park .The film was amazing and I think everyone enjoyed it. Here are some things people said : “It was a really good film and I had never seen it before” Ellie-Mai 7-11 “I think it was really fun and I enjoyed the sweets most” Lotty 7-11 The screen was as big as a cinema so you could see the movie really well. The Great Britain Pentathlon team came 1st in the World Biathle championships in Cyprus. Kiera was part of that team – she got to stand on the podium whilst they played the British National Anthem. She personally is 6th in the WORLD!
Jordan is involved in uechi-ryū, a traditional style of Okinawan karate. She trains in kata and kumite which are fighting strategies and has to wear pads, a gum shield, chest and body protector and a face mask.
Club uechi-ryū is based in Benfleet. Jordan trains for 6½ hours a week and has travelled as far as Glasgow to fight. She is in the England A squad 14/15 girls’ under 54 kgs and also fights for the regional squad, undertaking regular training in St Albans. Jordan came 4th in a recent competition; an Go Kiera! amazing achievement.

Woman in
The Woman in Black’ Theatre Visit and Bespoke Workshops On the 19th September 2013, 70 Year 10 pupils and 6 staff went to the Famous RADA studios in London to attend 4 hours of workshops with professional, actors and directors based on the play ‘ The Woman in Black’. The workshops covered a wide range of skills from plot construction, creation of atmosphere in the theatre to what directors are looking for from the actors.

Black Trip
The King John pupils were extremely hard working and enthusiastic on the day receiving much praise from the practitioners. All the students were extremely polite and respectful and made myself and the other staff very proud. We then walked to the theatre for the evening performance of the play and the students were scared out of their seats, loving every minute of the spine chilling performances from the actors at the Fortune Theatre, London. A great experience was had by all. My special thanks to Mrs Homer, Ms Woolgrove, Mrs Anderson, Mrs Thomas and Mrs Potter for their support on the day. Thank you. Ms Grennan 9

Languages MFL Welcome to the new term; for year 7 it may be the first time they have studied French or Spanish. Macmillan Coffee Morning A team of King John year 13 students organised a coffee morning, cake sale and raffle to support the Macmillan Coffee Morning on Friday 27th September. This cake, made by Jessica Wright, Year 13, was first prize in the raffle and was won by lucky Chloe Foster, Year 7. The whole event raised a brilliant £350; a great achievement so well done to the organisers: Abby, Emily, Jess, Dan, Andrew, Andy, Abbi, Daniel, Nessa, Dan, Kirsti and Tasha for an excellent job. school was very upsetting. Mrs Robinson spoke to her contact in Nairobi and fortunately no one at the school was directly affected, although of course such a traumatic event was deeply felt within the school and most people knew someone or knew of someone affected by the incident. To try and help in some small way and to demonstrate our support for our friends and colleagues in Nairobi King John has made a donation of £500 to the Kenya Red Cross who were straight away on the scene dealing with the aftermath in terms of immediate practical help and longer term support and counselling. Our thoughts continue to be with those who have been affected.
Bad Weather Arrangements This is the time of the year when severe weather may cause problems for teachers and students trying to get into school. If we do get any really severe snowstorms please listen to the local radio (BBC Essex and Essex FM) for the up to date news from the school. School closures will be posted on our website by 7.30am www.thekjs.essex.sch.uk. It would be helpful if you didn’t telephone the school directly – the lines just get jammed and teachers trying to contact the school cannot get through!
Kenya Crisis The King John School is supporting the Kenya Crisis. The awful events in September in the Westgate Shopping Centre in Kenya have no doubt moved many of us – but to some teachers of King John there was a special resonance. One of King John’s international partner schools is the Nairobi School, situated just a couple of miles from the Westgate Shopping Centre. A number of the teachers, and even one pupil, at King John have had the wonderful opportunity of visiting the school and / or working with its staff and students. To hear of something so shocking happening so close to our twin 12

Physical Education Super League Netball Amy Rawlings 12-03 Amy made the Surrey Storm short squad (main team) last night and Maddie Dyer 9-01 made the long squad (4 extra players-she is still only 13 and not 14 until next month so they are putting her in this squad until she is 14 and allowed to play on court). This is a huge achievement for both girls but especially for Maddie who is so young. Archery - Josie Skinner 11-10 Over the past year and a half I have been in a talent selection programme with Archery GB. In May 2012 I applied to be in the programme. This meant going to Lilleshall, the home of GB (in all sports) and training with the GB coaches. I had to do exercises, stretchy band work as well as keeping diaries about what exercises I did, how I shoot etc. This was over a 20 week period. Then they selected people who they thought had potential. Unfortunately, I didn’t get selected at this stage and I was recalled in October, although I was not selected once again I was told to carry on with what I was doing. My final chance was July 2013. Again I travelled to Lilleshall where I was told that there were 60 spaces in the whole country and that there would be 3 Academies, Northern, Central and Southern. I worked so hard with the Southern coaches hoping to earn my place. In the last week of August I found out I have been given a place! I was so shocked, I thought my Dad was joking when he told me. I then started to receive emails explaining what was going on. I would have to go across to Gloucester to Hartbury College once a month to work with
coaches. I would do team building exercises and learn about the mental side of archery. I have 10 ‘camps’ up until next August where we will find out what happens next. Out of the 60 people that were selected 3 of them are from my club and 2 of us go to The King John School. I am very nervous but I am looking forward to my future ahead of me.
Girls’ football Well done to the U13 team who beat Lister Academy in the first round of the Essex Cup. This was the first game for the girls and it was great to get off to a winning start to the season. Good luck in the next round! Physical Education The Under 16 Hockey Team played in the U16 National Cup on Tuesday 8th October. They were Runners Up in this tournament and progress to represent Essex in the Eastern Regional Tournament on 21st November in Norwich. The team beat Felsted, Chigwell, Brentwood and Forest private schools and narrowly lost 1-0 to Coopers Coburn. Cross Country Final! Four teams are through to the Regional cross country final! For the first time ever King John have got all 4 teams Four teams through to regional cross country final! For the first time ever King John have got all 4 teams through to the regional round of the National Schools Cross Country. The race took place at Gloucester park against schools from across the County. The Junior girls finished 2nd, the junior boys 3rd, the inter girls 1st and the inter boys were 2nd in a close competition. The next round takes place on 9th November in St Albans. Junior girls team - Katy Fenner, Abby Rex, Morgan Taylor, Charlotte George, Erin Lee, Elizabeth McGlynn, Genevieve Pate. Junior boys team - Nick Skinner, Frankie Stone, Jamie Gamon, Azar Aitmarri, Mathew Pointer, Theo Chandler, James Spencer. SILVER DUKE OF EDINBURGH 2013 Congratulations to the Silver 2013 group on completing the expedition sections of their award! The group took part in two expeditions, their practice in July to Eastbourne and their assessed expedition to the Peak District in September. The group were absolutely fantastic on both of their expeditions with only a few getting lost! A big thank you to the group leaders, Mrs Neal, Mr Higham and Mr Rider for assisting on the trip. Students must now remember to ensure they complete all of their sections and upload on to EDofE to complete their award. Mrs Denny.
