The King John School would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents who agreed to complete a Parent Survey at the recent Review Afternoons. Working closely with parents/carers is vital to the successful education and development of all students. The survey asked parents/carers to consider a variety of issues including the quality of teaching, dealing with bullying and poor behaviour. The results are currently being analysed and will help to inform us as to whether we are providing the level of service that your child both requires and deserves. Message Board From Dr Margaret Wilson, Headteacher Welcome back to the new school year and I would particularly like to welcome all our new students and new staff. I hope that you have settled in well and enjoyed your first half term with us. I assure you it will get even better! Congratulations on our excellent GCSE and AS results. Our 5+ A*-C GCSE including English and Mathematics was slightly down at 75% following the changes to the English marking but every student in the school achieved 5+ A*-C grades. At AS students achieved the best average point score ever of 309.1. We are always, of course, looking to improve our results and ensure that every student reaches their full potential. Even this early in the term the school has already gained the International School Award as well as a Recognition of Quality Award related to Careers Education Information Advice & Guidance, both of which are for 3 years. We have also hosted a very successful Open Morning and 6th Form Open Evening as well as two presentation evenings, all of which were very well attended. Dates for further events this year can be found on the school website which has been redesigned in order to make it more user friendly. I hope you enjoy the articles within this newsletter and I would particularly draw your attention to the article on parental parking in order to ensure the safety of all of our students. We will continue to strive to improve and, with your continued support, I look forward to another highly successful and rewarding year.

Parental Car Parking and Access to the School The King John School is a busy, oversubscribed and vibrant school and alongside all of these positives sits parental access to the site and transport for your children. The school, like many others across the country, struggles to deal with the issue of students being dropped off for school and collected at the end of the school day. Since September we have had several avoidable issues to deal with, including a minor accident with a school bus in the Benfleet Road car park, several complaints from local residents, and parents driving on to the school site, parking and then waiting for their child. As a school we have a duty of care to all of our students. This includes road safety at our entrances/exits and visitors who come on to site who must sign in and be issued with clear identification. We have now had to take the extreme step of involving our local community police officers to insist that parents park correctly in Shipwrights Drive, thus ensuring a safe arrival and departure from school for our students and to make sure that their view of the road is not obstructed by vehicles parking on the clearly marked double yellow and zigzag lines. Could we please remind you of the following: Parents should not be coming in to the school from Benfleet Road or Shipwrights Drive to drop off or collect their child. Any parent coming on to the school site for a meeting may only park in a visitor’s space outside the main reception in Shipwrights Drive. If there is no space available we would recommend that you park in the layby directly opposite the school which has a one hour waiting limit. Any parent going beyond the main reception or Student Services desk must sign in and be issued with a visitor’s badge. Parents should adhere to the Highway Code with regard to parking restrictions outside the school which are there for our students’ benefit and safety. Please remind your child to use the crossings in Benfleet Road or Shipwrights Drive. We would also ask that parents consider the local residents. We do appreciate that the vast majority of our parents are very considerate. However, the school will never apologise for taking all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of our students at all times. We hope that we can rely on your support in this matter to make the King John School as safe as we possibly can for our students.

Reminder to all parents When your child is absent from school we appreciate you calling Student Services to report their absence, but would like to remind you we still require you to send in a letter of explanation for the absence with your child on their return. Without this in writing, the absence will be recorded as unauthorised and may result in the involvement of the Education Welfare Officer.
Student Safety The School is very concerned about the safety of the students on our site. With this in mind we would ask that cars DO NOT DRIVE ON TO THE SCHOOL SITE to drop students off or pick them up. This includes the car park at the Benfleet Road entrance. This car park is intended for staff and visitor parking only. A large number of students have to cross this area to get into school and the presence of cars driving through the car park greatly increases the risk to students. Please take notice of the signs on the gateway and drop your children off outside the school site. A small walk up the road can only be good for them!!! Katrina Bentley, Bursar

She is a keen member of the local amateur dramatic company and was delighted to have been given a part in their pantomime this year. Eve Glenister 7-09 Will be performing in Cinderella at the Cliffs Pavillion, Southend, this December. We hope students and staff will support Eve and wish her success in her performances. Year 7 Film Night On Friday 28th September, Year 7 had the chance to enjoy some social time together watching a film in the theatre. The aim was to encourage the students to have some time to relax together and also to be able to get to know other students in the year group. Thank you to Mr Smith who organised the event and to Ms David, Mrs Durham and Miss Horn for supervising. Also, a big thank you to Mrs Copeland and Mrs Thoupos, with a team of Year 11 students, for organising the refreshments. The sale of the refreshments raised over £50 which is going to the year group's charity, Make a Wish. We look forward to year 7 enjoying lots more social activities together. Miss Murray Enquiring mind On the last day of the summer term, Jack Duffield who was then in 8-06 tutor group, found out that he was one of the national winners of the British Gas most enquiring minds competition. This meant that Jack was able to spend a day at the Blue Rubicon innovations center where they were shown carbon neutral homes of the future. These were utopian, something out of a sci-fi film. After an organic lunch break Jack and his fellows were let loose on creating their own innovations and then presenting their ideas, fuelled by what they had seen earlier. They then had a chance to showcase them to the big wigs at Centrica and the best ideas have been taken up by their Research and Development team. Two of Jack’s ideas were chosen!!!!!!! This meant that Jack also got a chance to showcase his thoughts on Fun Kids radio. Jack said ‘I was swallowed up by the scale of the event, and the immense effort put in by British Gas and Blue Rubicon. The day was simply superb. I think the part I enjoyed most was probably the presentations at the end, where we essentially had to show off our ideas. The only reason I’d pick it as the best part of the day is because it earned me a place on Fun Kids radio!’ So who knows we may see some of Jack’s creativity in the future. Ms J Brown. P.A.L.S Peer Active Listeners The following Year 10 Students recently completed a training session with Bar ‘n’ Bus to become Peer Active Listeners. They have been trained to listen, give advice and are all fully aware of all safeguarding procedures. They were selected by their Head of Year and tutors as they have proved themselves to be helpful and supportive members of their respective tutor groups. In recognition of their training all PALS were presented with their certificates and badges at the recent Year 9 prize giving evening event. The PALS will work alongside the existing Year 11 PALS to support younger students who need additional support on a 1-to-1 basis. Creative & Performing Arts Mamma Mia Theatre visit. The King John School Drama club students were treated to a drama subsidised trip to see Mamma Mia in London’s West End. This was for all the hard work they had put into the Drama club productions last year. It was lovely to see our pupils dancing in the aisles alongside the older generation in the theatre. The pupils’ behaviour was exemplar and we were very proud of them throughout the visit. Ms Grennan.
Chelsea O'Connell, Nancy VaseyReed and Imogen Robins are all Year 10 Performing Arts students who are Singing in the Southend Festival in Crowestone Christian Centre in Westcliff mid November. They are entered for Music Theatre and Pop Ballad classes, performing songs they have learnt in their school singing lessons. Their performance will be marked by professional singer Bryan Husbands as they compete against other singers their age. Miss R Russell
Key Stage 5 Splendid Productions Workshop We were delighted to have been able to book the fantastic ‘Splendid Productions Theatre Company’ to come into King John and take a 3hour workshop on the theatre practitioners Stanislavski & Brecht. Splendid Productions are one of the top theatre and education companies in England today, creating challenging and vibrant theatre for young people. They are also experts in leading practical workshops on practitioner theory. The workshop took place on Tuesday 18th September from 9.00am – 1.00pm and the students were totally absorbed in a fun, challenging and creative environment where they had the opportunity to learn about these two important practitioners that are an essential part of the ‘A’ Level course. The King John Academy of Arts has been very busy over the past few months, LAMDA Drama students have now received their results and it was 100% PASS RATE! The students worked incredibly hard and are extremely happy with their results. They gained 7 distinctions, 14 merits and 3 passes and are looking forward to the next set of exams! Year 7 Readathon
As part of the Year 7 fundraising for their year group charity, Make-A-Wish Foundationﾂｮ UK, the English Department are running a Readathon between now and the end of the Christmas holidays. We believe this will encourage students to read for pleasure while they raise funds to help Make-A-Wish Foundation grant magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses. The Readathon will run from the October half term until the end of the Christmas holidays. Each student will set themselves an individual reading challenge. Students will be supported by their tutor and their English teacher in setting these challenges and we would also ask parents/guardians to get involved with helping students to set themselves a challenge which is achievable, but will also encourage them to read more. Year 7 students will be bringing a letter home with full details about the Readathon, together with a sponsor form and some suggested reading ideas. We would be grateful if parents/guardians could encourage students to do everything possible to achieve their challenge and help them to raise as much money as possible through sponsorship from friends and family. There will be prizes for the tutor group which raises the most funds and for the tutor group in which the most challenges have been met. Sponsorship money should be collected and brought into school during the week commencing 7th January 2013. Department for International Development Conference On the 10th of July 2012 Reece Beale (11-01) and Hannah Copeland (11-06) visited the Department for International Development in Westminster, where they were joined by over a dozen teenagers from across the UK to grill a Government Minister on getting every child into school by 2015. They travelled to join with other young people deeply concerned about the 67 million children worldwide who are missing out on school. They had a private meeting with Stephen O’Brien, the Minister for International Development to quiz him on what the UK government is doing to get Education for All. They were also involved in the question time event took place in Westminster. Reece and Hannah were selected to be part of the delegation as they had reached the final in the Steve Sinnott Award to be the Young Ambassadors for the Global Campaign for Education 2012. In 2000, world leaders promised that every child would receive a quality education by 2015. Since the Global Campaign for Education began, 50 million more children have been able to attend school. However progress has now stalled; the number of children out of school has not reduced for the last two years. Hannah said: "We get so many opportunities – these should be available globally and not just in certain countries." Reece said: " I thought the meeting with the Minister went better than expected; we did get an answer to all our questions and it wasn't all waffle! There has been a massive step in the right direction with the numbers of children out of school dropping from 100 million in 2000 to 67million in 2012. I definitely want to go on and raise more awareness of the fact that 9 out of 10 disabled children do not go to school in many developing countries, that girls miss out most and parts of the world are really struggling to get even a basic primary education for all their children. " David Cameron has been asked by the UN Secretary-General to chair a committee to decide what comes next after this goal expires in 2015, and what new goals and promises to make. The Global Campaign for Education strongly believes that education is the route out of poverty and that universal primary education must remain a top priority for governments around the world. Thousands of pupils in 6000 UK schools have been taking part in the Send My Friend to School campaign this year to remind world leaders to ‘Go for Gold’ in this Olympic year and ensure that every child in the world realises their right to an education. The International School Award The King John School has been awarded the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom. The International School Award is a badge of honour for schools that do outstanding work in international education, such as through links with partner schools overseas. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need to live and work as global citizens. Our international work includes work on the Olympics with a school in Brazil and a school in Ethiopia. We have also exchanged letters with schools in France and Spain to help students with their writing skills. There has also been an exchange of work with schools in Saudi Arabia. The British Council was particularly impressed with all our work during our Olympic Themed week. This is the 3rd time the school has received this award, which lasts for 3 years.

Charity News 2011—2012 Last year we changed the way we run charities at King John by asking each year group to select its own charity to support. Every child in the school had the opportunity to nominate a charity and each year group’s committee then voted for their favourite. Speakers from each charity visited assemblies to talk about their organisation. Then throughout the year all non-uniform days and fund raising event monies were put towards each year group’s own charity. This new set up was a massive success with King John raising more money than ever for some brilliant local, national and international charities.
I am delighted to announce that in the academic year 2011-2012 The King John School raised over
£12,950 for our selected charities.

The money was raised through a huge variety of events including; cake sales, Thoughtful Thursdays, Coins in the Couch, Non-uniform events, Sixth form quiz night, Christmas Fair, Mother’s Day sale, Wristband sales, Sponsored run/walk/ crawl/3 legged/5 legged!! race around the school track, King John School talent show, even as far as a very brave Mr Sexton having his legs waxed in front of an awed audience. This year we are hoping for even bigger and better! Sociology Summer School at Colchester University On Tuesday 10th July, Ashleigh McLellan, Isobel Williams and I attended a 3 day residential Summer School at Colchester University. While there, we focused on Crime and the Media and in particular the London riots that took place last August. We were able to get picked up from school in a taxi, where a Student Ambassador greeted us and took us to the University. The Student Ambassadors were a large part of the experience, as they helped and guided us and were able to tell us about their experiences of University. We met the Sociology Department and had lectures on a variety of topics such as Organised Crime, Child Abuse and Representing Punishment. We worked in groups throughout the three days to create a presentation which we did on the final day of the Summer School. These were based on the London riots, but every group took a different perspective on them. We had to present this on a podium, which was quite nerve wracking! We were also able to experience life at University, as we went bowling and had a party in the evening. Overall, the experience was really fun and useful, as I was able to gain a real insight into what it is like to stay and study at University. By Gemma Ford
Rights Respecting School Award Update As a whole school we are working towards achieving UNICEF’s Rights Respecting School Award. This award is based around the United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child. This award is about every child knowing what their rights are and more importantly being responsible for their rights and respecting them. It is also about all adults in the school modelling Rights Respecting behaviour. We are due to be assessed for this award at the end of November. Can you answer these questions about Children’s rights? Answers can be found on page 15. 1. What does UNICEF stand for? 2. The Children’s rights charter is ratified by every UN country except one. What is that country? 3. According to the Children’s Rights Charter, up to what age counts as a “child”? 4. Sixth form Geography and Biology Field Course Trip to Slapton Ley FSC Centre in Devon Monday 25th June – Saturday 30th June 2012. This year the Geography and Biology departments combined to run the year 12 fieldwork trip, at the Slapton Ley FSC centre in Devon. The field courses were designed to help students meet the requirements of their A2 courses. The Geographers worked towards their Geographical Skills Module whilst the Biologists planned and collected their data for their Unit 6 coursework. The field course also provided the opportunity to cover a section of the syllabus which was not covered elsewhere, thus broadening the students’ knowledge and ability to apply. The trip provided the opportunity for the students to experience many aspects of their subject outside of the classroom as well as providing an invaluable opportunity to practice techniques and methods. The Geographers looked at a range of environments, including a four mile coastal walk, where students collected data on long-shore drift and played ‘Eye Spy with my Geographical Eye’. We also studied the changes downstream in the River Harbourne. Farmer Mike inspired us with his knowledge of organic farming! Finally the Ley itself provided an interesting environment to study succession on the ridge. The Biologists examined the ecology of the local woodland and freshwater ecology of a stream, whilst also studying the succession of the shingle ridge like the Geographers. The students all worked extremely hard on their investigations and produced some excellent results. We all had a great week, with good weather. Thank you to Miss Abbott, Mrs White and Mrs Gladwin for organizing the trip, Mrs Smith, Miss Mydlova, Mr Morley, Mr Greenway and Mrs Durham for taking the trip.

It is essential that you bring PE kit to every PE lesson! If you are unable to take part, (for any reason) you should bring a note explaining why you cannot take part and your kit so you can still take part in the lesson as a coach or as an official. If you are unable to get changed due to an injury, for example a broken leg, we will of course be able to accommodate you elsewhere......this is not always possible for more minor injuries and ailments and you will still need to be part of your group.... WHATEVER the weather!!! Failure to bring in your kit will result in a detention.

If you do we are happy to look after small items such as mobile phones and watches but it is the STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY to hand these in to a member of staff at the start of the lesson or practice. National Schools Cross Country
Congratulations to Joe Harris 9-04 who won the active Brentwood Sports Personality of the year 2012, This is a great sporting year in which to win this award.
In the 1st round of this National competition 3 out of 4 teams have now qualified for the Regional final - the most teams we have EVER had! The Junior girls finished 2nd to St Paul’s School from London. Niamh Smith (Year 8) finished 2nd and the rest of the team (all from Year 7) finished in the top 22. A fantastic achievement for all year 7 runners who were competing against year 8's. The Inter girls were superb with all 6 athletes finishing in the top 14 runners - a fantastic achievement!! Kiera Tippett finished 3rd and the team came 1st. In the Junior boys the team were 2nd overall with great runs from Lukas Volk and Bailey Millen, the top Year 7 finisher. The Inter boys race was won convincingly by Christian Gray. The team finished 4th overall, just missing out on qualifying. A great performance by all runners and good luck to the teams in the Regional finals in November. Taylor Churchill 10-05 On Tuesday the 2nd October 2012 I competed in the Chelmsford Opens Ice Skating Competition. There are various classes in skating, depending on your age and level. I was entered into the 13 and over Level 1 category. There was 10 people in my group and there was 125 people overall. I came 5th out of 10 in my group. Essex Cup Football - U13 Girls The U13's are through to the second round of the Essex cup with an extra time win over Greensward Academy. The team played well for the 1st half with Rhiana Castle scoring from a Lavinia Tidy-Jones corner. The second half saw an improved Greensward come out and put the team under pressure for periods of time and a goal came from a great build up. At 1-1 the game went to extra time and King John came out firing and a 2nd goal came from Lavinia. We then held out for the remainder of the game with the defence doing a brilliant job. This was the first game that the team had played together and they played superbly. Well done girls and good luck in the nest round. Netball Well done to both the U14 and U16 netball teams who have both qualified for the County netball rally in November. Both teams played very well with some great results against schools from Southend and Castle Point and Rochford. Good luck in the next round! MFL The MFL faculty has been lucky enough to develop its range of resources and support yet further this year. The faculty has a full set of laptops allowing students to work independently, fully equipped with webcams, voice recorders and digital cameras to allow students the chance to develop their creativity in French or Spanish. There is a range of multimedia available to borrow from the faculty from up to date magazines and films to music and literature. The VLE has been developed and there are online textbooks allowing students access to support and extension resources at all times. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to study Chinese in Shanghai for three weeks on behalf of the school. Initially, the temperature, particularly the humidity, was the first thing that I had to get used to and the purchase of a fan was on all of our shopping lists, along with the fact that a green man on a crossing does not necessarily mean that traffic will stop! Being able to eat in the canteen for 50p or in a restaurant for just under £5 meant that I didn’t go hungry for the whole three weeks, although I could not quite bring myself to try the chicken feet or pig skin! The lessons were intense but by the end of the first week I felt that I was understood better in the restaurants and even managed to haggle in some of the local markets! Whilst my impression of China is that it is a land of contrasts, drinking authentic tea in a tea house, looking out over Shanghai city from the Oriental Pearl Tower, enjoying a leisurely boat ride as well as a less-leisurely tuktuk ride are memories that I will always remember as part of my Chinese experience.
