It has been a long year but over the school holidays we will still be open for events such as the Summer Sports Camp. Starting with our outstanding OfSTED last September it has been another successful year for the school. Our first ever group of students on the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award have just left for their final trip to Morocco; an amazing achievement. Other good news is that this year three teams reached the National Schools Athletics finals competing against public schools such as Millfield and Brentwood. Our students did the school proud as they always do. There is more to come next year! September will see the opening of our brand new Sixth Form to students. The enhanced facilities include a new catering facility, state of the art IT, photography rooms, a bespoke study area and a Learning Resource Centre to meet the needs of our students and much, much more besides. I am delighted that the school is also now working in partnership with the Youth Service and next year will see the joint use of some of our facilities. We are all looking forward to our GCSE, AS and A2 results and hope that every student has achieved what they wanted. Just a reminder that to give our Year 10 students a head start in Year 11there is a range of work for them to complete on the VLE over the holidays. I would like to thank parents, students and governors for their personal support this year in nominating me for Essex Headteacher of the Year as well as for your continuing support for the school as a whole. We could not be as successful as we are without your help. A bit like junk mail the school receives a huge number of marketing emails every day to its generic email address. Many of these are filtered to the school’s spam box. On occasions emails from parents may be filtered in the same way and due to the volumes received they are sometimes overlooked. If you do need to send an urgent email to the school, please send this to a named individual. If you are unsure of their email address please telephone the school where we will be happy to help you. I wish you all a happy, healthy and relaxing summer break and look forward to seeing you all back in September.

A hetty feather adventure
Well done to Josh Ashman who recently won 2 silver medals at a gymnastic competition!
It seems we have the next JK Rowling here in the school! Gabby Moore, a talented year 7 writer has won a writing competition for her untitled story that she actually wrote on behalf of her friend. The story is about a girl living with foster parents who constantly argue. She has dreams of a music career but one day has a bad accident and becomes comatised. In this strange world between life and death, she lives out her dream and finds happiness. Eventually when she wakes up, she feels she has become a different person.
Congratulations to Isabel Clifton who has landed the title role of ‘Hetty’ in the brand new CBBC TV series Hetty Feather. Filming starts soon and we would all like wish her the very best of luck !

Gabby’s inspiration for the story came from a Japanese anime story called ‘Angel Beats’ which is about children with hard lives. Ira Sawa is her favourite character. Gabby is currently writing a book inspired by the American film ‘Supernatural’.
Dance off To end the school year with a bang, Rachel Byrne will be competing at the XXL Street Dance Championships at Wembley Arena the weekend of 19th July! The competition has in the past been a platform for famous acts including Diversity.
Best of luck to Matthew Read who has auditioned for the part of Augustus Gloop in the West End musical, Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
We wish her the best of luck and we’re sure that she will be able to dance her way to the top.
Matthew is no stranger to the stage having performed in Oliver! in the West End for six months playing a part in the gang, as well as professional pantomimes.
Lets hope this is his golden ticket to meet the ledgendary Willy Wonka and eat confectionery galore!

Talented musician Saffron Hayward has just completed her exams to achieve a grade 3 in clarinet and grade 1 in piano. Well done! “I’m very proud of myself for getting my grade 3 clarinet and grade 1 piano. So far, I have done quite well.”
year 7 my dog and i “My name is Stacey Frost. Me and my dog who is a big Labrador cross Collie have been competing in dog agility shows for the last 9 months. I do this because I thoroughly enjoy it and had an opportunity to go to Crufts. We recently entered the OJAC competition (Open Junior Agility Championships) and came 14th and 10th place. In another junior agility competition I came 1st in the steeple chase (jumps and tunnels). I have another event coming up which will last a week, but some shows can be even longer, sometimes over 9 days long!”

A SPECIAL PRESENTATION
Year 7 Mersea Trip, 13th to 15th June
Kayley Fletcher, Community Fundraising Manager for Southend Hospital visited The King John School on Friday 27th June. During the Year 7 morning assembly a cheque of £430 was presented to Kayley to buy a special baby bath for the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICUS) at Southend Hospital. Here at the school, each year group is given a different charity for which to raise funds. The year 7 students have worked hard managing to raise over £2000 so far for the baby units at both Southend and Basildon Hospitals. They have done this through cake sales, mother’s day gift sales and many more events. “I have been so impressed with the generosity of the year group to support the special baby units for our two local hospitals. The range of events the year group has run has meant that everyone has got involved and we have been able to raise a substantial amount to support these worthy causes. The interest the year group has taken has also been incredible and we had the lovely opportunity to visit the unit with a group of our students. They were inspired to raise even more money.” MISS MURRAY
Rugby star Future rugby star, Tyler Goodman has been awarded for his efforts by being titled ‘player of the year’ and has received trophies and awards for his team coming in 1st at a local tournament. “I started playing rugby in 2011 for Westcliff Rugby Club; I really enjoy the sport as well as playing in the team – I really feel that I become part of the team spirit. After my first year, where I was playing as a prop, I was awarded with the title ‘player with most potential’. The following season our team played really well and won lots of trophies and medal. I was then awarded ‘player of the year’! Our team continued to improve but sadly I was plagued by injuries. Since joining the King John rugby team I have learnt a lot and I’m sure we will do very well next year.”

The first ever trip to Mersea Island on an adventure weekend was a huge success. 42 Year 7 students and 5 members of staff had a fantastic weekend taking part in activities such as archery, mountain biking and rock climbing… Everyone had a great time and it was so successful we’re hoping to invite more students along in 2015.
year 7 and 8 art workshop On Tuesday 8th July a group of year 7 and 8 students were involved in a work shop in school with two artists, one a glass artist and the other a photographer. The project is called ‘A Crowd of Memories’. The intention is to create an installation based on memories of the elderly in Essex. This will take the form of a ‘crowd’ of photographic images printed onto glass. Prior to the workshop the students asked an elderly relative or family friend to share a memory about a time in their life be it happy, sad or funny. They then took photos or borrowed an existing photograph of them to scan in for the installation. During the workshop the students collected together their shared memories. The artists taught them how to get the photographs ready to transfer onto glass and they even had a go at glass cutting. To get the image on to the glass, it was scanned onto special transfer paper which was then immersed in water. The image came off and was placed on the glass ready to be fired and set. In September, the installation will be exhibited at the old Hadleigh Fire Station.
year 8 year 8 politics
Rebecca Harris visited the King John School on Monday 16th June to discuss the Modern Slavery Bill with year 8 students. The Year 8 have been learning about child trafficking around the world, including within the UK. This has been part of a UNICEF campaign to help the victims of child trafficking. The new Modern Slavery Bill will mean that prosecution of the traffickers will be a lot easier. However the campaign is to also include Legal Guardians for those children who are rescued from slavery. These children often do not know how to live a normal life, for example how to cross a road or drink water from a tap. Legal Guardians can help them learn these things, as well as help them through any legal processes. The Year 8 students explained this to Rebecca Harris and showed her films that they had produced on the topic. Four students will be attending an event in London in July to speak to Theresa May, Home Secretary about the same topic. Students were pleased and excited to be speaking to their MP, who can have a say on their behalf when the Bill is debated in Parliament.
Year 7 and 8 Maths challenge Students in years 7 and 8 achieved a total of 21 awards in this year’s national UKMT Maths Challenge. This is an outstanding achievement. Well done to Maxim Hoxha and Emily Webb who were the top performing year 8 and 7 respectively and both achieved gold awards.
UNICEF campaign event visit Stop Child Trafficking On Thursday 10th July we attended a UNICEF event at Central Hall, Westminster. This event was to promote the awareness of child trafficking. We are trying to persuade the government to add legal guardians for victims of child trafficking into the new Modern Slavery Bill. 10 children a week are trafficked into the UK for the purposes of domestic work, forced labour or sexual exploitation. These are only the numbers we know about and it is estimated that there are many more as this is a hidden crime. Even once children are identified and rescued they struggle to adapt
7
to a normal life and access services such as education, healthcare, transport etc. A legal guardian would help trafficked children to adapt to a more normal life as well as help them with legal processes they may have to go through. During the morning of the event we put together a presentation and decided on some questions to ask the panel of experts on the subject. The panel was made up of: Norman Baker – Minister of State for Crime Prevention; Anita Tiessen, Deputy Director at UNICEF UK; Nadine Finch, a leading immigration barrister, and two young people from the Child Trafficking Advice Centre, who were victims of child trafficking themselves. The panel was chaired by Jon Snow, the Channel 4 news presenter. There were representatives from 6 different schools at the event and they were put into two groups to do presentations. Lucy really impressed Jon Snow with her idea to make an impact on people – he called her idea “brilliant!” As a result of this UNICEF have asked us to create a short video which will hopefully be part of their national campaign to raise the awareness of child trafficking – an amazing opportunity. Quotes from our students about the day: “It was interesting to hear what a member of the government thought about our campaigning and how they felt about the issue” MAISIE LEGG “I liked hearing what the victims of child trafficking had to say because it was from a different point of view” JESSICA WELLINGTON “I liked the fact that we got opinions and views from lots of different people and everyone had their questions answered” LUCY WILLIS This was a fantastic campaign and event to be part of and we hope to be involved in more. Mrs Robinson, Lucy Willis, Maisie Legg, Jessica Wellington and KatieMcDougall
We have had a very busy term since we returned to school after the Easter break for our final term. We have been running a teenboundaries programme and the feedback has been very positive from the facilitators. They were very impressed by our year 9 cohort and said that their behaviour was amongst the best they have seen in all of their time running this programme in different schools. Well done year 9, you have done us proud! Our year 9 boys and girls have been very busy being victorious. The boys won the District Football final with a 5-1 win over Appleton. This completed the league and cup double as the boys won every game in the league competition. The following boys were part of the Year 10 English Schools Cup athletics team that finished 3rd in the whole country at Bedford International Stadium on Saturday. Joe Belcher and Albert Wilton, along with: Adam Liddell
“The sport teachers want us to continue improving whilst enjoying ourselves. Winning the district football finals was a great moment as we have won this competition every year.” Bradley Hart
“We always work as a team and support each other. We are good at our sport and we push ourselves to do our best and win our competitions.” Callum Liasi
“We get better and better every competition striving towards the National Finals. As a team we are performing to our limits.” Over 830 schools entered the event so for these boys to reach the finals, is a fantastic achievement. Albert won the pole vault competition with a jump of 3.30m and Adam won the triple jump with a jump of 12.61m. The girls have done us proud as well. The Year 9 girls came 2nd in the district athletics and helped The King John School to achieve 1st overall in terms of whole school achievement. Some special mentions about Poppy Douglas and Niamh Smith. Poppy is a double district champion! Added to this both Poppy and Niamh were part of the team that came 6th in the National Final. Fantastic! A very special shout out should be given to Albert Wilton due to playing so well in of all his teams, in particular to his efforts on the weekend of the 18th of May. Some weeks ago Albert scored and was apparently very influential in Essex Schools winning the
year 9 South England Cup. Since then, Albert was in the Essex squad for the National Schools Cup Final vs. Sussex at the home of Reading Football Club (Madjeski Stadium, as you know 25,000 capacity!!) where Essex were victorious, winning 3-1. This is a fantastic achievement, even more so that he is one of the only players in the squad who is not at a ‘professional’ club. Well done Albert! Jess Hanlon did brilliantly at a recent Golf tournament too. She won the the girls’ County golf championship back in April. Well done Jess! This term has also seen the year 9 students studying hair and beauty involved with the BTEC show. They were all very nervous on the night. All of the year 9 students had a model and had to do their hair and makeup for, before modelling on the catwalk. They did exceptionally well. A big thank you to the staff in Hair and Beauty for their time and dedication. Finally from me, the Head of Year. Some big changes are ahead of me over the coming months. My wife and I are moving to Canada to start a new life at the end of August. It’s not often an opportunity like this comes up and I feel the time is right to take it. It was a very difficult decision to make and not one that has been made lightly. It’s been my pleasure seeing my year group grow and mature over the last year. Some still have a little way to go but I am confident that they will get there. I am leaving them in very capable hands and my replacement will be popular and extremely effective. Mrs. Copeland will remain as the Student Support Officer to the year group as they go right through to the end of year 11 so this will provide continuity for the support they have received thus far. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every parent with whom I have had direct dealings with over the year for your support. For those parents whom I have not had direct dealings, I would like to thank you for the indirect support you have provided by getting your children into school and ensuring that they have made you and the school proud. The future is very bright for them as they start year 10 in 2014/2015 and for the years beyond. Thank you and best wishes for the future. MR ENDA MORLEY

science trip On Friday 2nd May 2014 fifteen year 9 science students were lucky enough to be invited on a day trip to Cambridge University to learn about physics and general university life. We arrived just after 10am and met up with the pupil liaison officer Lizzie, who was our guide for the morning. After a short walk through the city we arrived at Emmanuel College where we attended a presentation about university life and the courses on offer, followed by a tour of the college. We were very impressed by the dorms. However, some were disappointed by the lack of ovens in the kitchen. After seeing the cute ducklings on the paddock we continued our tour with a half an hour walk through the city to Fitzwilliam College where we stopped for lunch with the other schools attending the trip. After this we all went to the Cavendish physics laboratory for a lecture. We had a practical lesson about light in which we made telescopes. We finished the day with a lecture on space. The lecture was extremely interesting and we were amazed how light, something we take for granted, can be used to see objects light years away. We all agreed that Cambridge is a fantastic university where many world famous discoveries have been made and many famous scientists have worked. We decided it would be a great experience to study there in the future, BY JESSICA MOORE, MAISIE ELLIOT AND KATIE JACKSON
cambridge university trip
On Thursday 19th June, 5 lucky year 9 students (along with Mrs Copeland and Mrs Perella) had the opportunity to visit Cambridge University for the day. We took part in lectures, had tours of the beautiful colleges and even took a trip punting on the river! We were able to meet both top professors and students who offered guidance on the application process as well as other useful information such as student finances. The students that took part said that they would definitely consider applying to a top university in the future. They also mentioned that it has motivated them to work hard to achieve the best grades that they can at GCSE. Overall, it was a fantastic trip and we hope to attend again next year.
young musician of the year The Musician of the Year was an exciting competition open to all year groups held here at the school. Students had a musical battle for the title and cash prize of £25. Year 9, Lucas Ives was the winner and the runners up were Hannah Mickleburgh-Gardham, Callum Saunders, Ethan Procter and David Batchelor. Both students and audience had a fantastic time as each student performed their chosen pieces of music.
“A
fter coming second last year, I was really pleased to win the competition. I won £25 and a bag of Haribo for my two chosen pieces, Burgmüller’s ‘Le Chevaleresque’ and ‘Clair de Lune’ by Debussy both of which I performed on the piano. Around 20 people came to watch the completion, although it didn’t feel like a competition but more like a show. I really enjoyed the evening as it was a very casual and relaxed atmosphere.” LUCAS IVES, 9-02
“I played the flute and I think the night went really well. The pieces of music that I played were ‘Supercalafragalisticexpialadoshus’ from Mary Poppins and ‘Habanera’ from Carmen. We were all given bags of Haribo but I think Lucas deserved to win because he was really good. I had a great time, but was so nervous that I was glad when it was finished. I hope to enter more competitions in the future.”
HANNAH MICKLEBURGH-GARDHAM, 8-08
“Overall the night was pretty good but I
didn’t think it was the best outcome. I played the trumpet and the songs I performed were ‘Vois to Quibrle’ and ‘Blues For Big Ears’.”

the hair and beauty show Each year the Hair and Beauty department showcase their students talents in a fantastic show. Each student is given the opportunity to present their styling and make-up techniques on a model. Here’s what some of them had to say... I chose to do an Egyptian style on my model because I wanted to show my own interpretation of the theme, which was a modern version. What inspired me to do this look was the fact I could be adventurous with the make-up and add braids to the hair to make it look more modern.
I had chosen my image because I liked how it looked on my model. I was pleased when I had finished creating the look because the flowers that I had put in her hair had stayed in and were really secure (I had pre tested them to make sure they would not fall out during the catwalk). One of the things I was very proud of was how I had done my model’s makeup because it had stayed put during and after the show and was not misplaced. I think that practising for the show has benefited my skill in hair and beauty.
I enjoyed the research as everyone’s view is different on Egyptian style so I found a few different ideas to help. I used different types of plaits on my model which I learnt in my lessons. I think everyone was excited and enjoyed seeing each other’s look. CHLOE HARMER, 10-04
This had made a clearer image in my head of what my idea was. I loved looking at all the crazy designs that had been sported on catwalks all around the world. Personally I enjoyed being taught all the possible ways to style our model’s hair for the show because it was fun practising, and picking up on tips for my look. I think the outcome of my models look was absolutely fantastic because I think everyone seemed to enjoy it as much as I did. I had a great time throughout the evening although I felt quite nervous to begin with. HANNAH WOODCOCK, 9-09
ETHAN PROCTER, 7-02
“I enjoyed the hair and beauty show mostly
because of the theme I chose. For research I went on Google images and searched up wolf make up and I found the perfect match. The things I learnt in beauty that I did helped me mostly in my confidence. I had never put false lashes on any one before, but I had the courage to have a go and they went on fine. It was really the first time that I had even done makeup, and I was happy with what I was learning. I was glad with the outcome because it looked good and my client was pleased with it. I enjoyed the evening and we all had to walk down the cat walk. I strangely wasn’t scared at all! I would never have dreamt of doing someone’s mascara or even walking a catwalk in front of everyone but now I have the confidence to do it.”
“I played ‘Holiday’ by Green Day and ‘The
Cave’ by Mumford and Sons on the guitar. I think everyone played well, especially Lucas. I enjoyed the evening which was important and was a runner up in the competition. I was nervous but it was fun getting up on stage as I’ve never done that before. When I found out I was in the final, I was so excited.”

gold medallist Year 10 student Joe Harris has succeeded in winning a gold medal at the East Midlands trampoline gala held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. During the warm up, Joe’s father, Lee, was worried that he would struggle with the competition that day as his practice has been challenging due to growth spurts causing problems with fatigue and timing. However, Saturday was a real testament to Joe’s resolve and to how he approached the competition. He managed to dig deep and pull out a performance to secure the gold medal with a total of 124.380 points in the TRA Level 8 Mens 15-16 Trampoline and Tumbling Spring Events series 3. Joe, who practices with the Recoil Trampoline Club, Brentwood had success earlier this year securing his place at British Gymnastics national competition level and has an international competition coming up this month in Sweden. Historically, Joe has been able to overcome all odds to beat his target giving him some excellent foundations to build on in his future trampolining career. “At Saturday’s competition Joe was not at his best by far but he has such a good competition head on him. A true champion in my eyes.” Lee Harris, father of Joe.
year 10 achievement in itself. The final was very tense and Joe competed well. However, an error caused him to come close to coming off but he held onto his nerve and completed a difficult routine. Despite this, Joe came in fifth place against some of the top trampolinists in Europe who were all two years older than him. A fantastic achievement and Joe says he will be aiming for the top 3 next time.
Modern Pentathlon Champion Talented year 10 student, Kiera Tippett has achieved 8th place in the British under-17 Modern Pentathlon Championships having only recently switched to the Olympic multi event sport. For this she had to learn various new disciplines including fencing and shooting. Kiera previously specialised in triathlon so as you can imagine, she had much to take on in only six weeks. Finishing in the top 10 is a fantastic achievement especially considering that she is younger than most of her rivals and inexperienced in the sports that she had to undertake. Her accomplishment has earned her an invitation to the sport’s national talent programme.
prima ballerina “During the Easter holidays I attended a Ballet Master Class course at The Royal Opera House which was taught by principle dancers Francesca Filipi and Melissa Knighton of The Royal Ballet School. There was a three hour class that took place in one of the amazing rehearsal studios at The Royal Opera House, before ending the day with a tour of the stage. There were over 100 girls up to the age of 18 and I was honoured to receive a prestigious scholarship to their summer ballet school in Morocco for a week in the summer holidays.” HANNAH O’BRIEN, 10-11
jack petchey Following on from the initial Speak Out Challenge back in March, year 10 student Adison Poulton was the chosen student who went on to represent The King John School at the Regional Finals on Wednesday 7th May. Eleanor May, also year 10 was the runner up. The regional final was held on Wednesday 7th May at the Thurrock and Gateway Academy in Tilbury where Adison went up against other finalists from the area in order to go through to the next round – the regionals in which the winner of this stage will represent the region. Adison presented his speech, titled ‘Big School’ which is about how it feels as a youngster entering senior school. Adison did a fantastic job but was a few points shy of going through to the next round. The challenge was a fantastic opportunity for the school to give our talented students a platform on which to shine.
UPDATE: Joe seems unstoppable with yet another success under his belt. Joe recently flew out to Herrljunger in Sweden where he competed at the 31st Frivolton International Cup. Joe competed at the highest level group for his age where most of his competitors were two years older, only senior men being higher than this. He put in a sterling performance in the preliminary rounds to qualify for the final, which against the Russians is an
“The Jack Petchey regional final was a great experience and even though I didn’t get through, I still enjoyed the challenge.” ADISON POULTON “Adison did a fantastic job on the evening and produced a memorable performance in which he entertained the audience with an eloquent, witty, and insightful speech about the many pressures students face at secondary school. Well done, Adison!” MR SALKELD, ENGLISH TUTOR AND CITIZENSHIP COORDINATOR

year 10 prefects evening On Thursday 15th March, The King John School hosted another Prefect Presentation Evening. At the event, Year 10 prefects were presented with ties and badges in front of their families and tutors. The badges and ties are designed to help them stand out; they are a symbol of their hard work and identify them as role-models to our students and visitors. It was lovely to welcome so many parents, carers and family members to formally recognise and celebrate the achievement and efforts of some of our wonderful Year 10 students. We are very proud of each and every one of them. We then interviewed for the roles of Head Boy and Girl, as well as their deputies. We were incredibly impressed with all the students who interviewed for the roles and we are delighted to announce our new senior team: Head Boy: Tristan Lewis Deputy Head Boy: Joe Hing Deputy Head Boy: Jack Duffield Head Girl: Christina Taylor Deputy Head Girl: Erin Soundy Deputy Head Girl: Kiera Tippett

Music students in year 10 had the fantastic opportunity to watch the West End’s The Lion King, here’s what they had to say: “The seats were really good because we had amazing views of the whole performance.” HANNAH BRADY
On Tuesday 10th June Mrs Hemsworth and Mrs Marchant accompanied 3 students on a C2C train ride from Benfleet to Fenchurch Street and back. The whole experience was sponsored and organised by Options for Independent Living and offered invaluable experience in all aspects of train travel, from buying and using tickets to customer services and lost property. Students had the opportunity to chat with engineers, train drivers, travel managers and ticket officers. Our students were, as always, a credit to the school and learned a great deal about public transport.
“My favourite performance was The Circle of Life, because they physicalised the animals really well, which made me feel as though I was in Africa.” JASMINE ARMFIELD “The percussion section was absolutely phenomenal because they had so many different authentic African Instruments. The vocals were also amazing, especially the harmonies.” LUCY ROBINSON “All of the vocals were fantastic. They staged it marvellously. I was especially impressed with the way they portrayed the canyon, when the wildebeest charged and killed Mufasa.” MATILDA NEIL “The children who played the main characters have a massive career in front of them, because they were brilliant” MATT EMERY

“I did the Try a Train Day on Tuesday 10th June. We left school at 8.45 and got a bus to Benfleet Station; we then checked into the train station and got the train to Fenchurch Street. It was a very enjoyable time. My favourite bit was when we got into London. We spent one hour there and looked at the Tower of London, London Bridge and we went to the underground as well before getting back on a train. This was the aim for us to improve or even know how to use a train. It was a memorable day I will never forget. Even though the school can’t really provide planes I think if you know how to use a bus and a train you will know how to use a plane so I think I will be able to use a bus, train and plane in the future.” BY RYAN PROOST
graduation On Thursday 26th June, The King John School hosted a graduation ceremony for year 11 students at the Cliffs Pavilion. This was only the second time that the school has ever staged such an event at a large venue. The excitement was palpable as students and their families started to arrive, all of whom had made a brilliant effort and looked extremely smart. A film showing farewell messages from all staff that had taught them played while parents were shown to their seats by helpful year 10 prefects. The ceremony promptly started at 2.30pm with a speech delivered by Deputy Head Teacher, Mr Rider. Each tutor then talked about memories of their tutor group from over the years, some of whom they have had since year 7. This was then followed by the students coming up on stage to collect their graduation diploma certificates.
Throughout the ceremony there were musical performances from three groups of year 11 students, the first group being: Amy Pownall, Nancy Vasey-Reed, Niamh Reeman, Sarah Peterson, Imogen Robins, Chelsea O’Connell and Madeline Teeder who performed ‘Power of Love’. Four of the girls also performed a few songs again later in the ceremony. Another act was solo singer and guitarist, Joe Phillips, who looked amazing, dressed in a classic 60’s Teddy boy ensemble. The final performance was by Chelsea O’Connell, who sung Boyz II Men’s ‘End of the Road’, which had many in tears. Dr. Margaret Wilson gave some optimistic, honest and sensible advice for the leavers preparing them for their futures, as well as a heart-warming poem for the parents. The afternoon was filled with laughter and tears of joy as proud family members watched their nearest and dearest accept their glowing reports of their academic career. As expected, the students really have finished their secondary school life in style and the ceremony was just one of the many ways in which The King John School have celebrated the efforts and hard work that the students, staff and their families have contributed to make our young people what they are today.

Year 11 students Matthew Lau, and Christian Gray were awarded a special trophy to congratulate them on 100% attendance over their five years at the school! The students were given their awards during a celebratory assembly back in May. Well done to both, it’s a fantastic achievement and a great note to finish on.
prom On Friday 4th July, the year 11 leavers dressed in their best for the prom held at Three Rivers Golf Club in Chelmsford. All who attended made a fantastic effort and looked as glam as could be.

Changes to The King John School Catering Facilities
The school was awarded funding from the DfE to refurbish the very outdated kitchen that serves the Dining Room. In order that the kitchen was fully completed by the start of the new academic year we had to start the work in June. This meant the school had to slightly reduce the menu on offer and we would like to thank our students and staff for bearing with us over this period.
You will be hearing from the Immunisation Team about this during the autumn term. In the meantime you can access information on this via the NHS choices website and if you have any questions please call the immunisation team on 01702 220181.”
We hope you will think it has all been worth it when we are back to normal in September.

ivy league Year 12 student Ellen Binnigton has been selected as one of only 2 students from Essex for the Sutton Trust’s US summer school programme. The programme offers young people the opportunity to experience life at an American Ivy League status university during the summer holidays. Out of over 2000 applications, The Sutton Trust is sending Ellen and 174 other students to Yale university in New England, USA from 5th – 12th August to stay on campus for the week to attend college events and to explore and visit other campuses. The fully funded programme aims to help young people in their application to study undergraduate courses in America. Ellen, who came from The Eastwood Academy to the King John School Sixth Form has flourished in the environment and has ambitions to attend university in America if she achieves the high grades needed to enter such a prestigious college. She would like to study history, literature, philosophy and other subjects under the liberal arts umbrella. The application process was demanding with Ellen having to submit essays, a nine page application form and video interviews among other things. During April Ellen was invited on a 4 day residential at the London School of Economics where she met the other applicants. Fortunately, her entire team got through to the programme so she is sure to know a few people. “I’m still in a state of shock; opportunities like this just don’t happen to people like me. It goes to show that a little hard work and the right support can change your life. I cannot thank the Sutton Trust enough, and hope to make everyone back home proud.” ELLEN BINNINGTON, YEAR 12. “I am very proud of Ellen’s achievement. The selection process was extremely rigorous. It will be a great opportunity for her and I can’t wait to hear about how she gets on at Yale.” MS BROWN, DIRECTOR OF HUMANITIES AND LEARNING COORDINATOR FOR YEAR 12.
Congratulations to...
6th form my first year at king john sixth form “After attending the main school at King John, joining the Sixth Form felt like home from home. During my research of the range of colleges, I was pleased that King John Sixth Form was offering the courses that I was interested in. In fact, it was quite challenging to choose from the various options in each column because there was a wide range of choice. Out of the several subject choices, I chose to study: Sociology, English Literature, Media and Spanish. The reason why I decided to undertake these subjects was not only due to personal interest, but also because they are inter-related subjects that could benefit my further study and ultimately lead to supporting my ideal career. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in my first year at King John Sixth Form. It didn't take me long to settle in because of the professional and friendly environment from both Sixth Form students and members of staff. My courses are well organised and I am fully aware of exam dates and coursework deadlines in advance from all my teaching staff. Overall, the members of staff at The King John Sixth Form treat you in an adult environment and apply good communication, respect, educational skills and resources, kindness, humour into every lesson. If you're an old hand at the school or a new student, King John Sixth Form has additional extra-curricular activities that are held every day after school or during lunch break; this also includes revision sessions for upcoming exams. All of the above, helps students in their studies, but more importantly, to meet other students. In Year 12, I was elected as one of the Senior Students in the Senior Student Leadership Team. This has given me further confidence to continue supporting those from the main school and also the Sixth Form. It also has given me the opportunity to apply for Senior Head Girl. (Fingers crossed!)” JESSICA BUSH 12-09
Matt Hamilton from 12-02 has been selected to represent Great Britain in the IWAS World Junior Athletics Championships taking place in Stoke Mandeville in August!

media showcase A night of highs and lows, winner and losers and zombies and cowboys… Wait, what? No don’t worry, I’m not talking about some post apocalyptic western war; I’m talking about the media showcase. It was a brilliant night showing off the major talent that King John has to offer, whilst also giving students the chance to get rewarded for their work and enjoy some excellent refreshments courtesy of the Catering department. Any of the work entered was good enough to win, and I’m sure all the parents and staff involved were proud to be a part of the celebration. List of winners AS Crime and Horror: Reece Beale Comedy: James Martin, Lewis Payne and Jack Banks Lifestyle: Emma White and Alex Broadhurst Print: James Martin and Callum Brown Music Promo: Callum Brown, George Saunders and Owen Schooley AS Film: Aeddan Sussex A2 Moving Image: David Abiona Best A2 Print: Kristian Fitsall and Rebecca Abiona Star Pupil: Natasha Cooke Best A2 Film: Loui Sharman, Jake Adams and Jamie Albertelli Golden Critics Choice Award: Aeddan Sussex The night was filled with awards that catered for all kinds of films and print work. Categories for film ranged from Crime and Horror to Lifestyle whilst print work covered all aspects of different genres such as gambling, sport and cooking. The biggest award of the night ‘The Golden Critics Choice Award’ went to Aeddan Sussex who I managed to get a quote from. “I really enjoyed the night, it was nice seeing everyone’s talents and the variety of people’s work. The presenters, Reece and David, were top notch, real Oscar material, similar to the whole night really. I look forward to next year’s presentation, especially the food. #yolo”. The award was presented by Mr Watts, who gave an inspiring speech to finish the show. David and I then signed off and everyone went home more than content with the entertainment they had witnessed. HIGHER EDUCATION SUPERFAIR Here’s what two year 12 students thought...
“Throughout my time at sixth form I was
adamant that I was not going to attend university, but since attending the Higher Education Superfair I have changed my mind. I attended lectures on law and criminology and really enjoyed them. I am now researching different universities that offer these courses with the view of obtaining a degree in these subjects so that I can have a career in a law firm in the future. Before going to the Superfair I did not think that I was clever enough to go to university but after speaking to students representing different universities around the country I now know that I have as much chance as anyone else in getting on the courses of my choice. Attending the Superfair has changed the route I want to take in life.”

Russell Group University workshops
jotmans hall
It has been a fantastic year for university applications and success for our 6th form students. Some of our year 13’s have been made offers by some of the top universities in the country. They await their results in August. Our year 11 and 12 students have been working on how to apply to these universities and have been involved in weekly workshops looking at personal statements, application process and what to expect. We have had several visitors in from Oxford and Cambridge Universities to work with these students and both year 11 and 12 students will be visiting to Cambridge University for a taster day in the last week of term. These workshops will continue in the new school year and we are hoping for more Russell Group applications from our students than ever before!
Primary school pupils at Jotmans Hall, Benfleet were treated to a languages day with a World Cup feel led by 10 of our year 12 students. Pupils had French lessons planned by the students in numbers, greetings, colours, countries and food. In the afternoon, pupils visited different activity stations again led by the year 12 students to put their French into practice and to get stamps on their passports. All the feedback for the King John students was positive and the only thing that did not go down so well was the Roquefort!
“On the 24th of June my year group went
to the University Super Fair at University of Essex in Colchester. It was a very useful and enjoyable day. I took a large range of prospectuses, for the universities I already liked the sound of and also for the universities I had never heard of before. I also found out more about the course I want to do and how it is studied at different universities. Not only did I get prospectuses and learn about different universities, I also got a taste for university life. I had never been on a campus before and seeing it really helped me get a taste of what it’s like there. I also got to go to a lecture about business and that is the subject I hope to study at university. Overall I thought the day was very useful and it definitely helped me decide that university is what I want to do after college.”
Essex Roadster Event The Essex Roadster Event provides a unique learning experience. Visitors from the traffic police and the Essex driver safety team, to the off-road driving tuition and drugs talk, the sessions equip you with the skills and knowledge of what it takes to be a good young driver and how certain decisions can affect your life as well as the lives of others. The programme reveals to you the harsh realities of unsafe driving and gives real-life experiences of the effects of drugs and alcohol which make you stop and think about the choices that you make when getting behind the wheel of a car. Every segment is carefully thought out, and is delivered in an interesting and engaging way. It is a day not to be missed as it is an essential component to any young driver’s education.

Higher Education Evening The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service or UCAS is the organisation responsible for managing applications to higher education courses in the UK. Their online application system Apply 2015 has recently gone live. As a Sixth Form, our aim is to help students make informed choices that are right for them, guiding them, as well as parents, through the higher education application process. The annual application cycle began with our own Higher Education Evening in April which was well attended by both students and parents. Our speakers set out the benefits of higher education, provided an introduction to the application process, and explored a range of options available including studying abroad and gap years. In June nearly 200 Year 12 students attended the UCAS Higher Education Convention at the University of Essex in Colchester. With most universities and colleges represented, the event was an excellent opportunity to explore the vast range of degrees, diplomas, career opportunities available. www.ucas.com is the place to start for information about applying to university or college. The section for parents and guardians www.ucas.com/how-it-all-works/parents-and-guardians will help you understand the UCAS applicant journey and support your child through the process.

6th form student thoughts on..
Year 13 prom The Year 13 Leavers Ball marked the end of an era. Held at the Arlington Rooms in Leighon-sea, ladies and gents arrived dressed to impress. Staff and students alike had a lot of fun with the photo-booth (props galore) making hilarious and unforgettable memories.
The Sixth Form from a year 13 leaver: “Throughout my years at the King John Sixth Form I have achieved a lot in a short period of time, and have gained lots of new friends and experience on the way. Even though the year has been a challenge, its helped me to become more independent and mature with my studies, which will then help me in later life. The teachers are always there to help you out if you’re stuck, or just need someone to talk to. I have thoroughly enjoyed my year, and can’t wait for next year.”
The constant traffic around Mr Brown's Sweet Cart showed a true success and the ever-full dance floor suggested that a good time was had by all. An amazing turn out by staff ensured that we could all share our appreciation of everything they have done for us over the past 2 years, and for some even 7 years. When all is said and done, our final goodbyes were said in celebration of all we have done and achieved, regardless of the outcome on results day.
Final Thoughts... It is amazing how quickly seven years have flown by! I can still remember my first day at this school as clearly as I can remember my last. It is fair to say that it has been a fantastic journey where I have seen myself grow, not only as a student but as a person.

Sixth form life felt like a big change in comparison to the main school with many more challenges amongst exciting opportunities at large. One of these opportunities was to start a Friday after-school 7-a-side football tournament which would involve both students and staff. After much planning, liaising, promoting and registering, the tournament finally began and with huge numbers too! On the opening day about 80 sixth form students and staff participants played for their respective teams, and had fun whilst enjoying a good kick-about in a competitive but friendly environment. The tournament was eventually won by a student team; "Dons FC" was their name. Much credit has to go to the staff who helped organise the tournament from the start till the end and also the students and staff alike who competed. Without them it would not have been possible. The final event that I attended with the rest of my year group was the very well organised sixth form leavers ball. Donning my finest suit and tie I enjoyed a truly memorable evening with the friends that I had grown close with over the past years. The atmosphere, food and dancing were all terrific and it was even better having the teachers there - they dressed up well! Looking forward, I'm really excited as to what the future holds. I would like to thank everyone who has been part of my amazing KJS experience - students and staff - and I wish all of my friends the very best in whatever they choose to do. God bless. BY DAVID ABIONA, SENIOR HEAD BOY
Enrichment Day Today at the King John School was a very special day where the students were taken off timetable and given a very special treat. Each year group was able to experience different activities to broaden their horizons and get them to think outside the box or give them a chance to research and experience things that may be new to them. Year 7 – International Day Year 7 learnt about different countries and their cultures. Parents and professionals that have come from a different country were invited to come and speak to the students about their experiences and their country. Students were given a particular country and took their new found knowledge and put it to good use by creating some amazing boards and displays. Many students performed cultural dances, cooked food and dressed up to represent their allocated country – we even had a bull in to represent Spain! Each board was then judged by Tim Rider, Deputy Head Teacher and Andrew Sheldon, School Governor and Deputy Mayer. Here’s what Beverly Bass, Head of Art had to say: “Year 7 students came into the art room this morning to create 3d models of buildings, statues, flags, posters, paintings etc relevant to the country their tutor group had been given. The students worked independently and clearly enjoyed the opportunity to be creative and imaginative. “
We even had a professional photographer in… “Carole Anne Photography was in and she spoke to the students about how to set up the perfect photo, they then had the opportunity to try out a bit of still life photography using a DSLR camera. It went really well and I think the students enjoyed learning about the equipment and different types of photography.” MISS THOMAS.
Year 9 – Industry Day This was a great opportunity for year 9 to start thinking about their life after school, and find out about different vocations and companies. Visitors to the school included Ford, the emergency services, forensic scientists, a photographer and many more. The ambulance re-created a ‘real life’ scenario involving a life like accident where a former student was lucky enough to get covered in fake blood etc. It was all hands on deck as they set about what it would normally take to save a life. Students also tried their hands at song writing, one of the amusing songs being written about a granddad. “They all worked really well and produced some great songs in an hour” MISS CHAPMAN
year 7 cake sale
Year 10 – Futures Day For this year group we had some exciting practical activities directed by the Army. An army style assault course had been set up encouraging them to think about how to work effectively as a team. Motivational speakers and a sixth form taster session were also on the menu.
Year 8 – The Real Game Students were given the chance to ‘map’ their ideal life and then were given a job to start re-adjusting their life according to their salary. This was a good chance for them to see what it takes to get where they want to be and to think about the bigger ‘real-life’ picture.
chaRITIES NEWS
“Year 10 had 2 motivational speakers in today (Fix Up). They worked amazingly with the pupils and really engaged and entertained them. The speakers encouraged pupils to think positively about their remaining time in school. They emphasised the need for them to take responsibility for their learning by engaging in lessons and putting in maximum effort in lessons in order to achieve their life goals. It was really good to see how Year 10 worked together in their teams and supported and encouraged each other to complete the tasks.” MISS HUTCHINS “The students seemed to enjoy every minute of it and learned a lot from the experience.” Alison Ware, music teacher “Year 10 have been taking part in a team building activity in the sixth form. They were challenged to make a free standing structure out of balloons! They had to think carefully about what skills they were developing when working as a team. They also had the opportunity to ask some sixth form students questions about life as a sixth former at King John.” MRS SMITH

Each September, the year groups are allocated a charity to help raise funds for. Year 7’s is the baby care unit at Southend Hospital. Last term, tutor group 7-08 hosted a cake sale and managed to raise an incredible £82.39 selling yummy treats including home made cakes (topped with sweets and chocolates!), fizzy pop, bags of penny sweets and fun games. Year 7 have raised over £2,300 so far for the charity. A big well done!

modern foreign language Year 12 Work Experience Abroad Year 12 students have been supporting year 7 and 8 classes this year in order to go on a subsided work experience placement in Salamanca, Spain or Lille, France. This is what two of our students thought of their experience.
“On the 6th April 2014, I travelled with
a group of A-Level Spanish students from around the country to Salamanca, a city in the heart of Spain, to complete a work experience placement. I worked as a receptionist and waiter in the Hotel we were staying in, other jobs included nursery teachers, music shop clerks and photographers. My hours were 10-1 and 5-8. In the morning I was in the reception answering phone calls and making reservations for guests and coordinating the hotel staff so that the hotel was running efficiently. In the evening I worked in the Coffee Bar linked with the hotel where tasks included serving and interacting with customers and cleaning the tables.
My highlights of the week consisted of gaining experience of the working world in Spain and practising my Spanish with native speakers as well as meeting some great friends from across the UK. However, the outcome of the work experience was the best aspect, only I was awarded a certificate of excellence from David Cameron. I was offered a paid placement at the hotel for summer 2015 and my year abroad during my degree. For these reason I would strongly recommend it to all A-Level Spanish students, even if you have no intention of carrying languages through to degree level, as you have the chance to have an experience that you will never forget and it is perfect preparation for the Spanish exams because you are tested on all aspects of your Spanish. I can’t wait for summer 2015!” DANIEL LEE YEAR 13 LANGUAGE STUDENT
“On Saturday 5th
April, at 07:00, we embarked on our journey to the northern town of Lille, in France. The eight of us were picked up by the Halsbury coach and we met other students going to Lille and Rouen. We also met the group leaders that would be staying with us at our hotels. The ferry crossing, from Dover, was quite long, but the weather was very sunny and so we spent most of our time on the main deck. We arrived in Lille, at about 16:30, and made our way through the town centre to our hotel. This was right in the centre of everything, and so it was perfect for us as we loved the busy atmosphere and it was a perfect place to be able to practice our French. After finding our rooms and unpacking, we were allowed to explore the surrounding area. The eight of us went walking around the town and watched some street performers. It was just like Covent Garden.
congratulations Congratulations to the following linguists who have taken GCSE exams early in languages which they speak a little at home. Josh Groenberg in year 10 has taken Czech GCSE this year, Jordan Voges in year 10 has taken German GCSE and Patsy Poullas in year 9 has taken Greek GCSE. They have all been working really hard independently and we wish them every luck in the summer. Here’s what they had to say:
“I took my exams on Mon-
day 19th and Tuesday 20th May. I put myself forward as I was brought up speaking Czech at home. The exam was difficult but I tried my best and hopefully it will pay off.” JOSH GROENBERG, 10-08.
“I put myself forward for the
exam because I was learning German outside of school and my parents thought I could do it. I believe it went quite well, although the exam was difficult. Hopefully I will pass.” JORDAN VOGES, 10-09
On the Sunday we looked on a map for our work placements. On the Monday we all started our work placements. I worked in a clothes shop called “Aigle” which actually means “Eagle” in English. The brand is very popular in France and it specialises in outdoor clothes. At first it was hard to understand my employers, but as the days went by it became easier and easier as we only spoke in French, and they didn’t speak any English. I took part in assisting with customers and sales and also dressing the shop and mannequins.During the night time, we went out to French restaurants as well as a trip to Laser Quest and bowling. The experience was very rewarding and the ability to be able to speak the language is also a great skill to have. The trip definitely helped with our French language, just by learning everyday conversation. Mostly, I found the experience improved our language spontaneity. I would recommend this trip to any language enthusiast thinking about taking this subject for A-Level.”
“I took my GSCE early because I felt con-
fident with what I had to do as the school had been giving me additional help. Taking my GCSE was quite stressful but easy as I am fluent so I think it went well.” PASTY POULLAS, 9-06

modern foreign language barcelona 2014 The students had a wonderful chance to see many of the cultural aspects of the region from the Gaudi architecture of Barcelona to the inspirational Dali museum in Figueres. It was lovely to see the students wanting to use their Spanish in real-life situations and feeling motivated to do so. Thank you to all students and staff for a fun-filled experience. Miss Murray
“It was great going to Barcelona! The hotel
was comfortable which was nice and we even had a chance to go in the pool! Each day was brilliant as well. We went to the Nou Camp football stadium in Barcelona which was massive. We also went to a high rope obstacle course which was really fun and quite hard. I would definitely recommend going as you have a chance to meet new people and enjoy lots of activities.” EWAN NEVETT, 7-04
nuestros nuevos amigos de Espana “Today Spanish exchange students came to the school to experience our school life. Everyone was very friendly and fortunately knew a lot of English. It was a chance for us to put our Spanish into use and a way for them to practice their English. We enjoyed the day and hope to meet them again in the future.” MEG GANONSKY10-05 AND ALEX STUNT, 10-11 “Today, the Spanish exchange students visited our school. From 10-11am we gave them a tour of the school and did activities to get the know each other which was very enjoyable. After that we went to break time and period 3 and 4 as normal, where our Spanish friends came with us to experience different lessons. Then, we went to lunch and had refreshments in the library. We all waved goodbye after having exchanged numbers and social media names. Overall, it was a very fun day and a very good opportunity for any student.” RYAN GOODWIN, 10-10 “I’ve learnt a lot about Spanish schools and I’ve been using my language skills. I’ve really enjoyed the day but was nervous to begin with. They’re all really friendly.” LAUREN CLARK, 10-06 “I’ve really enjoyed meeting my new friend. My pen pal Iréne and I have been speaking a little Spanish together.” EMILY MACLEAN, 10-05

french quiz Students in year 10 represented King John in the annual inter school French competition at the Billericay school. Battling through games of logic, knowledge and sheer aggression the King John School team managed to secure 2nd place overall.
A German exchange student joined our year 7 French class for one lesson therefore I organised a German taster lesson for them. We did a quiz about Germany, learnt some greetings and students practised the new phrases they had learnt. Some students also remembered some of their German from primary school so could practise and help others. Wir haben viel Spaß gemacht! (We had lots of fun).
Congratulations to all students who participated with such enthusiasm and skill.
Year 12 trip to the French Institute, London.
CAKE TOWN A few weeks ago, we were set French homework that challenged us to make a model of our ideal towns and explain what there would be in our perfect town as a small passage. We decided the best way to do this would be to make our model out of cake complete with small buildings and a castle accompanied by our short paragraph: Dans ma ville idéale il y aurait une piscine et un centre sportif parce que je pourrais faire des exercices. AMBER COOK AND CHARLOTTE COWAN, BOTH YEAR 8
Recently I visited the French Institute in London. The theme for the day was WW2 which for me was particularly interesting as I also study History A level so it was engaging to learn about the war from the view of a different country. We were given a tour around the Institute, an old building situated in the heart of South Kensington. With an estimated 350, 000 French people living in London we saw a vast range of books available to borrow - in French and English translations, films, music and concerts were also shared which benefit the French and English community. After exploring South Kensington where there are French schools, cafes and bookshops galore, we returned to the cinema housed in the Institute to watch the film Strange Gardens, a film showing France under occupation by the Germans during WW2 based on a novel by Michel Quint. We will now take our knowledge to look further into life during the Second World War in France and study 2 contrasting films in preparation for A2 French next year. CHARLOTTE BROWN, YEAR 12

Junior Golf champs A few of our students have had an impressive run at the Junior County Golf Championships. In the girls’ competition, year 9 student Jessica Hanlon won the champs! With year 8 Ysobel Lush gaining 2nd place and year 10 Bethany Haste coming 3rd!! There were other schools there too, so King John did extremely well to gain the top three places in the championships! In the boys competition, year 7 student Henry Taylor came 2nd; and the overall U14 team competition was also won by The King John School with the combined scores of all the students that competed. “On Monday 28th of April, the Essex School's Golf competition took place at North Weald Golf Club. King John had a number of students with different handicaps taking part in the competition. It was a great day for the students as They had lots of success. King John often enter students into the golf competitions and we have a good link with Boyce Hill Golf Club where many of our students are cadet members” Mr Webb, Director of P.E “I played well, especially since I played with new clubs. I scored 40 points which was great but I’m aiming to get my handicap down to 19 for summer. I had such a good time and had loads of fun at the meal afterwards. I’m so pleased to come second in the whole of the championships”. ISOBEL LUSH, YEAR 8.

On Wednesday 30th April, the Year 8 and 9 King John School football team played fantastically at the District Finals at Canvey Island Football Club. With an early kick-off, the year 8 team managed to beat Greensward with a sensational 6 goals to 0 with a goal from Frankie Stone, two from Nick Skinner, two from Andrew Adegbite and an own goal.
The good fortune didn’t stop there as they also won the league. The year 9 team went on to beat Appleton 5-1 with Bert Wilton scoring an impressive 4 of the 5 goals! It seems as if we may have a new David Beckham! The year 11 team also won their game against FitzWimarc on penalties - Billy Wilton with the penalty save and Jacob George holding his nerve to slot in the winner. With such a positive run for The King John Schools at the District Finals, it’s no surprise that they were crowned the District Cup winners.
“Fantastic [effort] from all the boys in their last game for the school.” P.E DEPT. “The Year 8 Football team were fantastic Wednesday, and have been all season” MR EDWARDS

Congratulations to Heather Jerman, Natasha Cheeseman, Hannah Amato, Alice Boston, Ellen Taylor, Sian Waite, Ellie Turner-Powell, Antonia Tidy Jones, Amy Pownall, Megan Sanders, Sydney Moore, Emily George, Amelia Stennett and Jordan Castle. kjs mountain bikers The King John School has teamed up with Active Essex, Hadleigh Mountain Biking Club and Get out there Mountain Biking to run a series of workshops at the new Olympic Mountain Biking site at Hadleigh Farm. Following on from the 2012 Olympics, King John have enthused youngsters to get active by getting on their bikes and trying a new sport. A number of students from year 9 have been given the opportunity to refine their cycling skills under the careful guidance of Luke Farey from Get Out There Mountain Biking. "It is a wonderful opportunity for the students to try something new. As we are the closest school to the Olympic Site I am particularly keen to enthuse the youngsters to try mountain biking." "Luke is a fantastic coach, who has covered the basics of bike maintenance and given them skills that should see them progress onto some of the features of the Olympic Mountain biking track." Athletics On June 16th, for the first time King John managed to have all teams qualify for the regional final. This round was held at world class facitility, Allianz Park Stadium, home of Saracens Rugby. The Junior girls finished in 3rd place with a score of 407. Highlights of the day include year 8 students Yasmin Robinson's 27.2s in the 200m and Nicole Cooksley's 12.8s in the hurdles. The girls gave a fantastic performance, especially with this being the first big competition most of them have competed in. The Junior boys finished 6th with a score of 440. Mr. Webb was delighted with the performances but unfortunately they did not score enough points to progress to the next round. Year 8 students Frankie Stone ran 200m in 24.4s, Joe Hall achieved 34.20m in Hammer throw, Louie Hay completed the 80m Hurdles in 12.7s and Reagan O'Dea’s leap of 2.50m in the pole vault were the highlights of the day. The Inter Girls competition was a particularly high standard. The girls finished with a score of 413 which put them in 4th place on the day. This was only 15 points behind the leaders, and 3rd in the country for the runners up spot. The whole team excelled on the track, with year 10 students Maddy Bourne (12.5s in 100m), Helena Taylor (12.8s in the Hurdles) and Sophie Jones (27.65m in the Javelin) scoring the most points for the team. After the first round the Inter Boys scored 508. They had a good team performance in the field in the morning. Year 10s Parama Obi and Jordan Farrell's high jump performances were excellent, along with a 12.60m jump of year 9 student Adam Liddell in the triple jump. The boys went on to have an outstanding afternoon on the track with over half of the athletes running personal bests. The performances of Year 9s Albert Wilton and Adam Liddell in the 100m of 11.5s and 11.6s respectively, were superb. The boys finished with a score of 533 coming fourth in the country. Three teams from King John (Junior girls, Inter Girls and Inter Boys) have reached the National Athletics final! This is the first time in the school’s history. A huge amount of credit goes to all the pupils who have trained hard for this. A big thanks to all P.E. staff who have given up every lunch time since Easter, plus regular training and competitions after school to make this possible. The three teams on July 5th head to the Bedford International Athletics stadium with the aim of reaching their full potential and being major competitors in all events. Mr. Jonathan Edwards & Mrs Leigh Cann
senior girls athletics The King John Senior Girls Athletics team are champions again! The athletes from years 10 & 11 competed in the District Athletics at Melbourne Park, Chelmsford on Wednesday 7th May. The girls team dominated on the track and succeeded in reigning as champions finishing first or second in every event. There were also great individual performances from year 11 students Ellie Turner-Powell who won every event she took part in - the 300m hurdles, triple jump and also as a member of the winning relay team. For some this was their last event, but luckily many of the girls are in year 10 and so can build on their talents ready for next years championships. “The year 11 athletes have been a real credit to the school over the past 5 years and have been some of the most successful athletes the school has ever had! I wish them every success for the future” Mrs Leigh Cann, P.E. Update: The King John girls were crowned District Champions at the annual Castle Point and Rochford Athletics Championships. The year 7 and Senior girls both won their age groups with the year 8 and 9s both finishing runners up. The points were added together and King John won by 30 points beating local rivals Fitzwimarc. In the year 7 age group King John were dominant, winning by over 30 points with Maddie Condon, Maxine Frimpong, Erin Lee and the relay team crowned District Champions. In the year 8 age group there was a win for Nicole Cooksley in the hurdles. In year 9 Poppy Douglas was double District champion winning the hurdles and the long jump and Emily Cosgrove was victorious in the 300m.
Tennis
Back in June, The King John School took part in the junior girls district tennis tournament at Deanes. The teams played so well that both King John junior pairs had to play each other in the final! The girls that played each other in the final were: Nyah Kauders and Lucy Oliveri Vs Miaya Rahim-Shah and Amelia Farmer And eventually: Nyah Kauders and Lucy Oliveri won 4 games to 1.
sports news sports day On Monday 7th July, The King John School held their annual Sports Day involving over 1000 students. Students had the opportunity to take part in track and field events and score points for their respective tutor groups. The students did themselves proud by taking part in a variety of activities. It was lovely to see so many students taking part and working together as a team. Tutor groups had to be sympathetic to each others abilities and work out which students would suit which event best. It was warming to see so many students cheering each other on and enjoying the day. Students particularly enjoyed seeing King John staff get into the spirit of things by finishing the day off with a staff relay race.
ski trip 2014 During the Easter holidays 43 students and 6 staff travelled to Solitude Mountain Resort in Utah, USA. This was for the annual King John School ski trip. The group had a long trip to Utah flying via Denver arriving on April 5th. We were blessed with having fantastic conditions for the first day with the resort having received over 36inches of snow in the three days before our arrival! They say that the snow in Utah is the greatest on earth and on the first morning after the groups had been split into beginners, intermediates and advanced the students were able to enjoy the fantastic conditions. Five days were spent on the mountain with experienced instructors that improved everybody's skiing. Some were able to ski into the more difficult terrain of Honeycomb Canyon and enjoy double diamond black runs!!

The evening’s entertainment was excellent too as the group visited a baseball game to watch the Salt Lake City Bees play. We also had a successful shopping trip to the Gateway shopping mall where Abercrombie and Fitch had never had a more profitable day! Other entertainment included a quiz night, a bingo evening and the Dutch auction.
Mr Webb gave out some prizes to students with special recognition to Kitty Blake and Mitchell Brown who were voted as being the "top tourists". Charlie King in year 11 was voted the "overall best skier of the week" and Hannah Mickleburgh-Gardham the "Best Beginner". We had such a fun week. Lots of falling over, plenty of snow ball fights and the mountain was almost completely empty! The students at all times were a credit to the school being complemented on their behaviour by the instructors, the hotel, the airlines and anyone else they met. Well done to all!! Thanks to Mr Sexton, Mr Edwards, Mr Webb, Mrs Radmore, Mrs Cann and Mrs Denny for giving us this opportunity.
Anyone who would be interested in future ski trips should see Mr Webb. (There is still one space on next year's trip to Italy and the letters for the 2016 trip to Vermont, USA will be out soon watch this space).
