King’s Education Certificate in New Zealand

Early Childhood Education Orientation (ECO) This course is an intensive twelve-week orientation programme for immigrants wanting to work as early childhood teachers in New Zealand. It is designed to orientate teachers to New Zealand culture and lifestyle, the expectations of the New Zealand early childhood education workplace and to Te Whariki – the New Zealand Early Childhood Education Curriculum. It is common for new immigrants to face cultural and dialect issues in a new country. This course is designed to ensure your immigration to New Zealand is a success, because it will provide the opportunities for you to learn about the particular early childhood environment of New Zealand. It will help you to create successful relationships with your new teaching colleagues and the parents and children who attend the centres where you will be working. On completion of this course, you will be able to demonstrate awareness of the professional knowledge, skills and attitudes required of an early childhood teacher working in New Zealand. You will have suitable tools and new skills which will empower you to be active members of your new community.

Steps to Becoming a Registered Teacher in New Zealand

Apply to NZQA to have your education training assessed for early childhood education teaching in New Zealand.

Get your English level to 7.0 IELTS in all 4 skill areas.

Apply to the New Zealand Teacher’s Council for preliminary registration as an early childhood teacher.

Come to King’s to gain an NZQA approved Certificate in Early Childhood Orientation (for work in New Zealand).

Gain a job in NZ teaching young children.*

Course Content Three components to support the successful long-term immigration of each early childhood teacher will be covered in the course. • Introduction to Aotearoa / New Zealand and the Te Whariki-Early Childhood Curriculum • Professional Skills of an Early Childhood Teacher in New Zealand • Diversity in the Early Childhood setting. You can expect classes to include; short lectures, class discussions, reflective learning sessions, peer tutoring, class readings, videos / DVDs, practical obvservation exercises and role plays.

Entry Requirements Applicants must have: • An Education qualification from overseas • Relevant teaching experience • Preliminary registration with the New Zealand Teachers Council.

Start Dates

• A minimum English language level of IELTS 7.0 or equivalent across all four skill areas.
