Welcome to King’s Hawford King’s Hawford is a very special place. There is a huge warmth and vibrancy running through the school community, an extremely effective and creative approach to teaching and learning, and an enormous range of opportunities available to our children, both in and out of the classroom. My team has created a happy and ambitious learning environment, and I feel extremely privileged to be the Head of this delightful school. At King’s Hawford we aim for excellence in all areas of the academic and wider curriculum. We firmly believe that each and every member of our wonderful school community has something special to offer, and we find them every opportunity to shine; whether it be in the classroom, on the stage achieving greatness in the expressive arts, out at Forest School or on the sports field. However diverse or unusual your children’s interests might be, they will find their place at King’s Hawford. Small classes and dedicated teaching and support staff encourage all of our children to reach their academic potential, but this is just one aspect of the provision. Teaching and learning are structured to encourage the children to build the skills that they will need, not just at King’s Senior School, but into their young adulthood. They are encouraged to work collaboratively, build resilience and think independently. I would encourage you to come and visit us to and see all that King’s Hawford has to offer. You will find the children to be confident, respectful and only too keen to share their views on life at King’s Hawford with you.

Jennie Phillips Head

Our Ethos At King’s Hawford it is our aim to create a happy, stimulating, home-from-home environment, which will promote the learning process for all children and where friendships and confidence flourish. We aim to provide children with the strongest possible foundations for their educational journey. This is done by instilling key characteristics in our pupils. At King’s Hawford…. •

We are adventurous. Outdoor learning is at the heart of what we do. We make full use of our local area to enhance educational provision.

We are individuals. We nurture growth of individual characteristics through the development of intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual potential.

We are respectful. As a school we promote an ethos of tolerance and mutual respect which is rooted in Christian values.

We are confident. We want all children to show initiative in their own learning and we aim to ensure that each child feels fully included, secure and valued within the school community.

We are playful. We believe that childhood is a time of play through which children discover the excitement of learning, the rewards of achievement and acquire life skills. Childhood should be preserved and not rushed.

Every child, from nursery and beyond, learns to collaborate, persevere, reflect and challenge themselves in order to become inquisitive learners.

General Information

Visit the School Most parents choose to visit King’s Hawford on a working day. We would be delighted to show you around the School so you can see first-hand what makes us unique. We run several open events throughout the year but encourage visits to the School by appointment outside these dates. Details of future open events and further information may be obtained from our Registrar: Melanie Adams: 01905 451292

Entry and Registration (2021/22) Early Year’s Foundation (2-5 years old) Upon receipt of your Registration Form and fee we will be able to give an immediate indication of the likelihood of a place being available. Children are able to join Kindergarten immediately following their second birthday. For those children joining Reception in September, we offer a number of informal events where the children can familiarise themselves with their new classroom and get to know their teacher. Junior School Years (Years 1-6) Entry for girls and boys into Years 1 to 6 is by means of an assessment which takes place on an individual basis after a child is registered. We recommend early application for places as they are offered subject to satisfactory performance in assessments either for the following September or, depending upon availability of places, at the earliest convenient time. The great majority of those who enter the King’s Junior Schools will proceed to the Senior School. Find out more about our entrance procedure on our website: ksw.org.uk/kings-hawford/join/process/ If all goes well, a place will then be offered at King’s Hawford, depending on availability at that time, and will be held for two weeks. Acceptance of entry into the King’s Foundation, by payment of a £200 deposit, will be requested at this point. This is refunded when children leave the Foundation.

Once a family has registered a child with us we will keep them informed of all school events prior to their child joining the School. In particular parents may wish to book places for their child on the many holiday activities and sports camps that take place at King’s Hawford during the holiday periods. In the event of over-subscription, places will be allocated on the following basis, provided that the academic criteria for the award of a place has been met: a) Siblings of children already at King’s Hawford. b) Siblings of children who have been at the School. c) Children whose parents attended a school within the King’s Foundation, or Hawford Lodge prior to it becoming part of the Foundation. d) The date on which a place, having been offered, is formally accepted.

Scholarships and Bursaries Scholarships are available for candidates of exceptional academic or musical ability. These awards are of up to one-third tuition fees in value and are tenable only in the Junior School. Further awards are available at 11+ and 13+. Limited funds exist from which small bursaries can be granted to pupils who might be unable to meet the full fees otherwise payable because of financial hardship. Please speak to the Registrar regarding these applications. Sibling Reductions A reduction in fees (10% for a third child and 15% for a fourth child) is also allowed in cases when three or more children are pupils at the School together (please note that if the thrid or fourth sibling is in Kindergarten, these reductions will only apply to Kindergarten pupils who attend full time).

Uniform As a school with a clear focus on outdoor education, our uniform is designed to be robust and provide for comfort and warmth as the children take part in our activities. Details of our uniform, including kits lists and where it can be purchased, can be found on our website: www.ksw.org.uk/kings-hawford/school-life/uniform/

School Lunches Reception - Year 2 £154 per term Year 3 - Year 6 £213 per term

Given that so much of our activity takes place in the grounds and around the School the most important item is often Wellington boots, which are especially important for the younger children as they visit our Forest School, which we have developed in the School grounds.

School meals are provided for all of our children in the dining hall. Meals are cooked on the premises in our recently refurbished kitchen by school catering staff.

We have no desire to be over prescriptive and ask simply that our children wear their uniform with pride.

Children are offered a choice of two hot meals, one being vegetarian each day. In addition there is a salad bar and a choice of sandwiches. Older Kindergarten and Reception children are served at their tables and there is a reduced choice to these year groups as they often find the choice overwhelming. Our youngest Kindergarten children are served their meal in the Kindergarten. Older children are taught the importance of choosing a balanced meal and we monitor this to ensure they are not selecting unsuitable combinations. At morning break, we offer fruit to everyone, along with milk or water. Those children staying after school are given a sandwich, cake or ‘treat’ to provide additional energy at the end of the day. A sample menu can be found on our school website: www.ksw.org.uk/kings-hawford/school-life/school-meals/

School uniform as published in the clothes list must be worn during term-time as directed; every effort is made to keep the list to a reasonable minimum. There is a second hand uniform shop within the School, where clothing in good condition may be bought and sold, the full profits from which go to the School’s Development Trust. The shop is open on a regular basis throughout term-time. Withdrawal A full term’s notice must be given in writing before the removal of a pupil. Failing such notice, the full fees for the ensuing term must be paid. No boy or girl may be absent from school for any reason save illness without previous permission from the Head. The Head has the right to require parents to withdraw their son or daughter from the School at any time if she considers this to be in the best interests of the pupil concerned or of the School as a whole.

Co-curricular

Sports, Clubs & Activities

The Arts

Sports and activities have a strong tradition at King’s Hawford and teams regularly represent the School at rugby, hockey, football, netball, cricket, rounders, swimming and athletics. Our teams enjoy considerable success at regional and national levels. Our sporting ethos is always to be inclusive and all children get the opportunity to enjoy competitive sport.

The Arts play a central role in life at King’s Hawford with all pupils enjoying music, art, drama and dance as part of the curriculum with specialist music lessons also available. Outside the classroom there are plenty of opportunities for children to hone their creative talents. The School has a 50-strong school orchestra and there is also a string group and a windband. Regular informal concerts take place throughout the school year and these are supplemented by a Summer Concert. All children are involved in our school drama presentations, with separate productions for Years 5 and 6, and Years 3 and 4. Younger children take part in Christmas productions each year.

All pupils are members of a house and there are regular competitions between the houses in all sports and in other activities such as tugof-war. A number of various sports trips are run throughout the year. These include the annual Year 6 sports tour to Cardiff, trips to the Wimbledon tennis championships and rugby trips to Twickenham Stadium.

King’s Hawford holds the status of Artsmark Gold, awarded by the Arts Council England. This was awarded to recognise the high quality art, music, dance and drama being undertaken by the children at the School and also recognises the support of visiting artists at events involving the arts.

After School Clubs and Activities Many children stay for clubs and activities after school. We take care to ensure that the programme offers a wide variety of choices so that there is likely to be something for everyone. We regard this time as essential to developing interesting and engaging pupils and encourage all pupils in the Junior School to take part. Activities & clubs offered: Art Athletics Ballet Chess Choir Cookery Craft Cross-country Computing Country Dancing Drama

Football French Gardening Gymnastics History Hockey Horse Riding Maths Musical Theatre Netball Orchestra

Outward Bound Rugby Rounders Science String Group Swimming Technology Tennis Triathlon Wind Band

Outdoor Education Outdoor education is very much part of the school curriculum and all pupils participate in a safe but nevertheless adventurous programme. It is part of our philosophy that much can be learned by taking part in expedition and fieldwork. We aim to grow children’s self-esteem and self-confidence, whilst at the same time developing their ability to work as part of a team. Children at King’s Hawford are involved in camps from Year 2. Each year they are involved in an outward bound experience and, for many children, these days are the highlight of their King’s Hawford life.

Holiday Club

Our Holiday Club caters for pupils aged from 2 to 12 and provides excellent care for children in a relaxed and happy environment. We want children to enjoy their holidays whilst joining in with a range of activities and having fun with friends both old and new. The Clubs are run by our experienced staff to ensure continuity of care and take advantage of our extensive grounds, sports hall, indoor heated swimming pool, climbing wall and Katakanus. The emphasis is, of course, FUN! The children are able to participate in a range of activities including a variety of sports and games, craft and cooking, dance, and drama, as well as many other activities both on and off-site to give a balanced and enjoyable day.

Alongside our Holiday Clubs we also offer specialist sports camps for children in Years 1 - 7. Further information can be found on our website: ksw.org.uk/hawford-holiday-club

Moving on Our close links with the Senior School ensure smooth progression at 11+. Once children join King’s Hawford, the transition to the Senior School is seamless. They move on with a group of friends to a familiar site and to teachers well prepared to receive them, a number of whom they already know.

I’m so relieved. It’s been a dream of mine for a long time. I wanted to go to Oxford and follow my mum and grandad’s footsteps. King’s has been so supportive and helped me achieve this dream.

The King’s Senior School is one of the most highly regarded schools in the region having been named in “The Sunday Times Schools Guide 2019” as one of the top independent schools in the country. The School ranked 124th in the national table, an impressive thirty nine places higher than the previous year and were the leading independent school in Worcestershire. The guide “Parent Power” identifies the highest-achieving schools in the UK, ranked by their most recent examination results.
