02 | HEAD’S30 INTRODUCTION | LOCKDOWN
Despite the challenges that this way of schooling presented, it was good to see families taking advantage of these moments. It was, to an extent, reminiscent of the scene in ‘A Christmas Carol’ when Scrooge is returned to the days of Mr Fezziwig’s Christmas Party. Although he did not know it at the time, these were Scrooge’s happiest days. Dickens writes:
“
When happiness shows up, always give it a comfortable seat.
“
I have always loved that line. The happiest days of our lives will undoubtedly be the days when we came together as a family, enjoying the laughter and joy of simply being together. Simple moments are the best moments. So, in making the most of a difficult situation, we showed the spirit that united us as a community. Of course, it was wonderful to see the children return in the final weeks of the summer term and to celebrate being together again and also to offer our Year 6 children a Speech Day, albeit recorded and online.
Remote learning, along with a national lockdown, made for a tricky time for all of us but, in an unexpected way, it was period that we can all look back on with a great deal of pride. Our parents and children engaged positively with new ways of learning while greater and greater levels of independence were apparent as the term progressed. Zoom lessons, recorded videos, learning platforms and Joe Wicks became the ‘New Norm’. Given the fabulous May weather our families enjoyed time out with each other in the garden, on walks and in taking part in the various ‘Turner’s Trials’ that took place each week. We loved seeing the videos that were sent in, all of which attracted numerous views on our YouTube channel.
“
Do it today. Tomorrow it might be forbidden.
“
The final term of the 2019-20 school year presented a great deal of challenges and a situation that none of us could have predicted.
Whatever the situation, make the most of the opportunities that are presented to you. In doing so, celebrate the joys these days bring. And remember the Finnish proverb:
I wish you and your families many years of happiness together. These will be the best days of your lives.
