Making Contact with School

The first point of contact with the school will be through the school office ( 01905 354906). The office is open from 8.15am until 4.15pm during which time the secretary will be happy to deal with your enquiries. After 4.15pm, calls are redirected to Late Room. Before 8.15am and after 5.50pm a telephone answering machine will intercept calls. Mobile phones are now considered the norm even by our younger pupils and we appreciate that for some pupils it may be helpful to provide a mobile to enable contact during their journeys. During the school day mobiles are to be kept switched off and are for use only when the usual channels of communication are not possible, so please leave all messages for your child with the school office. Mobile phones are carried at the pupil’s own risk. A school calendar is sent home at the start of each term and a copy which is kept up-to-date with changes can be viewed on our website. A weekly newsletter detailing recent events and planned activities is sent to parents by email, and is also posted on the website. The school e-mail address is ksa@ksw.org.uk. This is a reliable and efficient method of contact with school for all but urgent matters. Please telephone rather than e-mail if your child is absent from school at any time. If your child is late for school please register with the school secretary before joining class. If you need to collect your child before the end of the day then please see the secretary before you leave school. Any enquiries should initially be referred to a child’s form teacher. The Head may be contacted through the secretary. Unless the matter is confidential, it is very helpful if you can give some detail of your enquiry to enable an appropriate response.

The School Day

Between 7.45 and 8.00am, children in all year groups may wait in Pre-Prep Hall. At 8.00am, a member of staff will collect all junior school children (Years 3 - 6) and escort them to the junior school. The school offers a breakfast club for junior school children each morning. Those wishing to use this service should meet in the school office at 8.00am and will be accompanied to the dining hall by a member of staff – there is no need to prebook. From 8.00am children who are not joining breakfast club will be supervised in the library until 8.15am, when they will move to the playground. Playground activities for junior school children are supervised by duty staff between 8.15am and 4.00pm. Outside those times parents are advised that they are responsible for the welfare of their children. If children are collected by parents from the Pre-Prep building to then use the playground while they wait for siblings in the Junior School, they are the responsibility of their parents. Children who are in school after 4.00pm, who are not involved in an after-school activity, will be looked after in our Late Room. This is a quiet room where children may complete homework or read, supervised by a member of staff. They will then be allowed to play games or watch a film until they are collected. Late Room closes at 6.00pm.

Homework

At the beginning of every term each child is issued a homework diary which contains a range of useful information, and a copy of the timetable. The children make a note in the diary each day of homework requirements; parents can also use it for simple communication between home and school. Every child is expected to complete homework each weekday evening. The length of time spent on homework gradually increases as children move through the school, beginning in the region of twenty minutes in Year 3 and increasing to a minimum of thirty minutes in Year 6. If your child has difficulty completing homework within a reasonable time, please let their form teacher know. In addition to homework, children should read for at least twenty minutes every day.

Clubs

After-school clubs operate throughout the year. Children will be given the opportunity to choose one or more clubs at the beginning of each term. We initially ask them to prioritise three choices, though if space is available it may then be possible to join more activities. Some clubs are run by invitation as additional sports coaching sessions. Most musical activities are arranged during assembly or lunch times. Clubs run from 4.00pm until 5.00pm unless otherwise stated. Children can be collected at 5.00pm, or may wait in the Late Room. Children in Year 3 are encouraged not to indulge in too many after-school clubs in their first term as the priority must be for them to retain the energy to commit themselves fully during the school day. We do not charge for after-school clubs unless they involve outside staff or facilities.

Games and Sport

All children take part in PE, swimming and games unless medical or other reasons advise otherwise. The Head should be notified in writing of any factors affecting a child’s involvement in physical activity. Children should bring a letter from home if they need to miss PE, swimming or games during recovery from short-term illness. This should be shown to their form teacher at the beginning of the school day. Trainers with non-marking soles should be worn at all times in the sports hall. Trainers used for games must not be used for PE unless they are completely clean! Swimming and games bags should be of school design purchased from Schooltogs. Watches and stud earrings (see section on uniform) must be removed and handed to a member of staff at the beginning of PE, swimming and games lessons. Where possible, valuables should be left in the school office rather than be taken into the sports hall.

Sports Fixtures

Children selected to play in a school team are expected to participate. Please contact the school office if you know that your child will be unable to play on a certain date.
