Clubs

After-school clubs operate throughout the year. Children will be given the opportunity to choose one or more clubs at the beginning of each term. We initially ask them to prioritise 3 choices, though if space is available it may then be possible to join more activities. Some clubs are run as additional sports coaching sessions. Clubs run from 3.45pm until 4.30pm unless otherwise stated; children can then be collected or may wait in Late Room. Children in Reception are encouraged not to opt for too many after-school clubs in their first term as the priority must be for them to commit themselves fully during the school day. We do not charge for after-school clubs unless they involve outside staff or facilities.

Games and Sport

All children take part in PE, swimming and games unless medical or other reasons advise otherwise. The Head should be notified in writing of any factors affecting a child’s involvement in physical activity. Children should bring a letter from home if they need to miss PE, swimming or games during recovery from short-term illness. This should be shown to their form teacher at the beginning of the school day. Trainers with non-marking soles should be worn for PE; trainers used for games must not be used for PE unless they are completely clean! Swimming and games bags should be of school design purchased from Schooltogs. Goggles are optional for swimming, though girls must wear swimming hats.

Health

Our two matrons look after the health of all the children at King’s St. Alban’s, and the senior school has a medical centre where fully qualified staff are on permanent call. Any special medical arrangements should be made with matron who will also oversee the administering of medicines and treatments. If a child is unwell, please do not bring them to school as they may infect other children. Any child who is taken ill during the school day will be looked after by matron in the medical room until they are collected. If a child is kept off school for any reason, please telephone the secretary before 9.00am (01905 354906) so that the school is aware of their absence. For an absence of more than one day please keep us informed so that we are always certain whether or not your child should have arrived. If you need matron to administer medication to your child during the day please call in to the school office to complete a permission form, or if this is not possible please provide written instruction as to time of administration, dosage and storage of medicines. From time to time, in common with most other schools, an outbreak of head lice may be discovered. If these unwelcome visitors are found, do please let us know and ensure that the recommended course of treatment is followed correctly; treatment should include the whole family!

Leave of Absence

The taking of family holidays during term time is discouraged, although special family functions such as weddings or bereavements are reasons for needing time off school. Leave of absence from school should be requested by writing to the Head well in advance.

School Lunch

School lunches (charged termly) offer a balanced menu and a wide choice including a vegetarian option. The vast majority of pupils have a cooked school lunch though you may provide a packed lunch if you prefer. Lunch is eaten in the Pre-Prep Hall. Those eating school lunch are encouraged to ask for specific portions to reduce waste but are expected to eat a reasonable amount and duty staff try to ensure this. It would be appreciated if you would support us in this should you choose to supply a packed lunch; children cannot thrive on a diet of chocolate spread sandwiches! We encourage good table manners and expect all children to behave sociably. You may choose for your child to have milk at break time (charged termly), and water is available throughout the day. Children are welcome to bring a small bottle to drink water from if they wish. Snacks or sweets should not be brought in to school as fruit will be provided at morning break times, along with a further healthy snack in the afternoon.

Making Contact with School

The first point of contact with the school will be through the school office (01905 354906). The office, which is on the junior school site, is open from 8.15am until 4.15pm during which time the secretary will be happy to deal with your enquiries. After 4.15pm calls are redirected to Late Room where duty staff will take a message. Before 8.15am and after 5.50pm a telephone answering machine will intercept calls. A school calendar is sent home at the start of each term and a copy which is kept up-to-date with changes can be viewed on our website. A weekly newsletter detailing recent events and planned activities is sent to parents by email, and is also posted on the website. The school e-mail address is ksa@ksw.org.uk. This is a reliable and efficient method of contact with school for all but urgent matters. Please telephone rather than e-mail if your child is absent from school at any time. If your child is late for school please register with the school secretary before joining class. If you collect your child before the end of the day then please see the secretary before you leave school. Any enquiries should initially be referred to a child’s form teacher. The Head may be contacted through his secretary. Unless the matter is confidential, it is very helpful if you can give some detail of your enquiry to enable an appropriate response.

The School Day

The school day begins at 8.40am and ends at 3.30pm, though children may be dropped off from 7.45am and collected up to 6.00pm. From 7.45am, please bring your child straight to the Pre-Prep entrance hall, where a member of staff will meet them. Children who are in school after 3.30pm, who are not involved in an after-school activity, will be looked after in Pre-Prep Late Room. After school care is available until 6.00pm. Children are collected from the Pre-Prep foyer at the end of the day. If you plan for your child to go home with another person, please inform a member of staff at the start of the day. We will not release children for collection by other relatives/carers unless such notification is held. If children are collected by parents from the Pre-Prep building to then wait for siblings in the junior school playground, they are not supervised and become the responsibility of their parents.

Homework

The school day is very demanding for young children and to boost their confidence we will only send home work which they have already covered in the classroom; homework should be seen as practice. The following is an indication of some activities which we will send home. If your child is too tired please do not feel that it must be completed as we do not want them to feel under pressure. We want all our pupils to enjoy doing their work and to be proud of their achievements.

• Reception – Basic Code practice; letter sound recognition, blending and segmenting, letter formation, Tricky Words. Reading activities/books containing appropriate sounds and tricky words taken home each night. • Year 1 – Reading activities/books containing appropriate sounds and tricky words taken home each night, blending and segmenting practice as appropriate. A weekly maths activity will also be given. • Year 2 – Reading books taken home each night. A weekly spelling investigation and a maths activity will be given.

Curriculum Evenings

At the beginning of each academic year a curriculum evening is held for each year group. This provides an opportunity to meet the class teacher and other parents, to discuss the work to be covered during the year ahead and our broad expectations of the children.
